A Goblin Tea Party

Scene: A Dimly Lit Glade in a Dense, Overgrown Forest

(Four goblins are seated around a rickety table adorned with mismatched tea cups and a teapot that's seen better days. The air is filled with the scent of over-steeped tea and mild trepidation.)

Gobnob: (Pouring tea, which looks suspiciously like mud) Now, remember, pinky out. That's how the fancy folk do it.

Snizzle: (Eyeing her cup suspiciously) I heard the fancy folk also drink tea that doesn't look like swamp water.

Grubwort: (Sniffing the air) Is it supposed to smell like a troll's laundry basket?

Muddles: Peace, friends! It's about ambiance, not aroma. Imagine, we are sophisticated beings partaking in high society's rituals!

Gobnob: (Grinning) Right, sophisticated! That's why I wore my best hat. (Points to a hat that appears to be made from an old boot.)

Snizzle: Sophisticated? I still have mud under my nails from yesterday's grub-digging fiesta.

Grubwort: (Takes a sip and grimaces) This tea tastes like it's been steeped in the tears of a disgruntled pixie.

Muddles: A touch of imagination, Grubwort. Imagine it's... an exotic blend from the far-off lands of... um, somewhere far-off.

Gobnob: Speaking of far-off, did anyone remember to invite the hobgoblin from the eastern marshes?

Snizzle: I thought you were going to do that!

Muddles: (Sighs) It appears our grand tea party is just us... again.

Grubwort: (Smiling) Well, at least we've got the best company. Who needs hobgoblins when you've got tea that could double as potion ingredients?

Gobnob: To us, the finest goblins in these woods!

(They all raise their cups, clinking them together, a chorus of laughter mingling with the clatter of teacups in the dim forest glade.)

In this tale spun of sunbeams and sea foam, let us remember that each grain of sand is a story, each wave a memory, and each breeze a caress from the world that tells us: "Slow down. Breathe. You are here. You are now."

And so, under the great canvas of the cosmos, emboldened by the vibrant life that ebbed and flowed around her, Solara remained, a testament to the beauty hidden in plain sighs (and sights!), waiting for those who would pause long enough to see it.

You open your eyes. As your tired, well-rested eyes open towards a shadowing, dusty cloud above you, you believe you must be in a dream. Of course it seems to be the only explanation as to why you’re here. It’s absurd otherwise. You distinctly remember falling onto your warm and comfy bed, exhausted from being overworked just so you can feed yourself, yet somehow find yourself awakening to an eerie sky of shadows.

“It has to be a dream.” You reassure yourself the second time, as you pick yourself up from what seems to be grass. Wet grass. Cold and slimy blades of green.

“I must be going crazy….”

You think about how on Earth you got here.

Eyes finally adjusting to the view, you open your mouth wide in awe. “Wow!”

You were scared, afraid and rather distraught. However, in the back of your mind you were curious, fascinated, and intrigued. Which possibly explains why you were in awe, maybe you were even glad you were there. But were you really there? Was this just a dream? Or was it real?

Slowly, your hand reaches for a tree that stood in-font of you, grand as can be. It’s long and twisted branches reached out for you as you creeped closer. You inspected it. It’s bark was course and it splintered in all directions. You then look behind the tree, noticing you were in some sort of forest. Tree after tree and bush after bush.

The forest around you was an ocean of emerald and sage, copper and gold. Enchanting songs of crickets and frogs circled you. They were singing- for you. That’s what it seemed. Moss sprung from the tree’s roots and fog sprung from the dusty atmosphere. It was haunting but beautiful. But as you faded into this enchanting world of whimsical creatures and plants, joy and pleasure fell flat as you remembered your increasingly worrisome journey into this world.

How would you get back? How would you find your way out? How would you get back to your cozy bed that once served as a safe place you kept all your worries and distresses that dragged you down?

Was this life now?

shrimp i'm being so honest rn i want this as a poster and i want it hung on my wall bc my heart still stops every time i look at it. the hard light that casts dazai's entire face into shadow which highlights the red of his eye makes me rattle the bars of my cage every single time, not to mention the rimlight on his entire frame basking the piece is an eerie glow. phenomenal play of lighting. i'm swept off my feet.

Another advantage of getting to know the narrator of your RPG is that it helps mitigate unconscious bias in your design. Dungeons & Dragons has a notably anthropological narrative voice, explaining other cultures and creatures like a scientist in the field. The language of D&D mimics the writing style of mid-century scientists traveling to “exotic” locations and cataloging non-Western experiences as part of a documentation of the Other. It’s easy for newer designers to want to “write a game like D&D” without regard for how even the narrative voice of Dungeons & Dragons carries unintended political baggage. Is a bird’s-eye and judgemental perspective really the energy you want to bring to your whimsical fantasy world? Or is there another perspective within your world that can be more useful, and allow you to find new perspectives on the world you’ve created.
