Turns out that Baizhu lives just out of town of Liyue, (not found in the game, was is it with not showing characters houses...) that way he has some greenery around his house, and has a garden out back :D 🌱

Baizhu just gets this strange familiar feeling from you (it almost reminds him of,, seeing a regular customer that has been to see him hundreds of times...) that convinces him to offer you a job at the pharmacy, in exchange for living in the guest room for awhile ! ! WOO

ON LIKE,, THE FIRST FEW DAYS WITH HER, SHE STARTS TO FOLLOW U AROUND MORE AND MORE LIKE A LITTLE DUCKLING

Qiqi seemed excited to tell u all the plants u dont recognize and what they do in medicine,

U mostly think that bc she walked and talked a little faster,

her emotions arent super obvious bc apparently her facial muscles arent super flexible... :/

(she later on after she trusts you more, will sometimes let u rub her little cheeks and massage her face to let her have more range, she looks like a content kitten those times 😭😭)

But when ur not out and about Liyue's nature with Qiqi,

U do little odd jobs around Liyue, like dog walking, delivering peoples' medicine, and u even registered w/the Adventurer's Guild so u could take on small commissions :D

U used ur money to buy ingredients to cook food for urself and the household (bc Baizhu cant make anything besides soup and tea apparantly srsly how is this man alive)

And thru a series of trial and error (and consulting Xiangling..)

U made coconut milk!!! ✨️🥥🥛

Qiqi loved. It. Every. Time.

She's not tall enough to reach the kitchen counters w/o a stool, but she can peek her little head over it and put her fingers on the edge, which she does everytime u make it 😫😫🥺🥺

She has a 6th sense for everytime u make it, no matter where she is in the house/nearby lol

It was also one of the things she wrote down in her notebook that she didnt wanna forget LMAO

Next to a reminder that she knows you + other facts abt u, is "can make coconut milk"

Shes already Baizhu's assistant, so she is great at cutting, chopping, and prepping ingredients

She insists on helping u everytime, she'll even delay her morning routine for u to make breakfast <3

U bought some fabric and whatnot to make Qiqi a backpack!! So she doesnt have to carry around the herb basket anymore

(the ones being sold were too expensive, and werent quite right for her anyway, but u did stab urself enough times that Baizhu gave u bandages..)

You give it to her on her birthday!! (she also remembered yours!! She gave u herbal medicine and a necklace of gemstones she handmade like noctilous jade and cor lapis cries)

It has lots of pockets, bc Qiqi also likes to get interesting rocks or non-medicinal flowers to give you while yall are outside <3

i love you and also im sorry.

ino is such an interesting character, kishimoto took your average pretty mean girl and made her actually super sweet and caring, adaptable, and intelligent

i actually like her personality a lot, she values her looks and can be a bit crabby but compared to sakura, ino is a lot more willing to work with her teammates. she actively takes charge to the point that shikamaru and choji look to her for what to do

id keep her "crush" on sasuke but id instead make it something that sakura misinterpreted and ino went along with bc she thought sakura just didnt want to be friends anymore. she still flirts with sasuke but in a joking way.

id keep her rivalry with sakura but makes it explicit that she wasnt the one that instigated it, id also make her less "mean" in a stereotypical bully way since she was the one that defended sakura from bullies in the first place. she should still be sassy and a bit of a hot head but not overtly rude to others.

also id have her win her fight with sakura, just bc i think it contributes better to sakura's development, but also opens up an extra fight in the chunin exams. not sure who id pit her against but im just saying it would give her more stuff to do (maybe shino? they were both top students at the academy)

she goes on the sasuke retrieval mission and stays behind to help choji fight. theres no reason that she shouldnt go, choji can still almost die and ino can use the time he bought her to finish off orochimaru's lackey but ino has PROVEN to be a good ninja, even if her fighting isnt that great shes fantastic crowd control…come the fuck on.

development wise…no healing abilities…it just felt so tacked on and she didn't nearly have as much passion for it as sakura did. id focus 100% on her clan's reconnaissance bc their abilities are super interesting. would def give her an upgrade regarding her body switching jutsu so shes not left unconcious on the ground with every technique. when shes a genin thats fine but ur telling me sasuke can summon God and ino still can't control people without falling asleep?

okay the puppet scene with the "Mind Puppet Switch Cursed Seal Technique" literally has not left my mind its SO cool and I wish ino learned to use it. is it "ethical"? no. might even be a war crime. but thats fine i think. let ino be a little scary.

AND!!! SUNA LITERALLY HAS A PUPPET MASTER!!! Ino can train with kankuro or at least ASK for assistance

ALSO. OH MY GOD. GIVE HER MORE TO DO IN THE HIDAN AND KAKUZU ARC HOLY SHIT. that arc literally just ended up being about shikamaru (based) and naruto (???) why weren't ino and choji more present!! naruto literally appeared to save the day with his new jutsu when this mission shouldve been team 10 and team 10 ONLY (kakashi is on thin ice)

i like the confrontation between shikamaru and hidan in the forest, thats fine, but ino and choji should be absolutely duking it out with kakazu and his family of puppets! you know who else uses puppets/external tools? INO. Have her try to control kakuzu's external guys while choji beats him up, naruto arriving on the scene feels cheap :/ have kakuzu remark that "oh the strategist is gone" and then ino just immediately takes over as the leader and thinks of a plan because shes teammates with shikamaru's lazy ass and also BEING SMART IS LITERALLY SO IMPORTANT TO HER CHARACTER

AND GIVE HER (AND CHOJI) A SCENE WHERE SHE MOURNS ASUMA. OH MY GOD. HER FUCKING TEACHER JUST DIED. Ino is sidelined sooo much in team 10 its insane. maybe she and her dad (while not super close) talk about what its like to lose people you love, her dad has been a ninja for decades, he would comfort her. have her arrange a bouquet and place it on asuma's grave, have her break down crying over her teacher! this would also be interesting since we dont spend as much time with team 10, but would be able to see that the side characters have their own lives and feelings outside of naruto.

regarding romance ive personally always seen her as a lesbian but her relationship with sai is fine i guess. if she and sai are endgame id like more of a buildup to it. but if i can get my way she and sakura end up together <3

i think shes fine in the war arc, but the war arc itself is something i just wouldnt include if i were to rewrite naruto

also her blank period outfit is UGLY throw that shit OUT girl

On Felix caring for Adrien, I agree that the show has shown many hints about this. Mostly, I base my opinion around 4 things: they used to be close as children, Felix seems to be holding a grudge over Adrien not coming to the funeral, Felix’s mother says he’s been different since his dad died, and the way Felix kept his part of the deal for speaking for Adrien.

Mostly though, I focus on the first two. I’ve always interpreted Felix’s behaviour towards Adrien as a kid who’s mad at someone they love - ironically, we can be much crueller to the people we love when we’re angry, because we’re confident they’ll forgive us and we’ll get away with it.

Remember the look on Felix’s face when CN called him out on what he did and said he must not have many friends with the way that he acts? I think that was a moment of genuine discomfort. And I think that line is why he made nice with Adrien in the end. Oh, he laid the apology on thick, definitely, and I’m not sure he wouldn’t do it all again if it would meet his goals, but based on how he treats his cousin in later episodes, I genuinely think the hug Felix gave him was sincere. He didn’t want to lose his cousin, even if he’s not ready to start treating him better either. Caring about someone doesn’t automatically make you a good person tbh.

That said, they’re kids. Adrien is perhaps the most mature and thoughtful teenager I’ve ever seen in my life who always puts the ones he loves before him. Felix, on the other hand, is your more typical selfish teenage brat. But just bc a teen is a selfish, rude, and hurtful, it doesn’t mean they don’t care about their family. Nor does it mean they’ll remain that way. Again, I see Felix as a kid who’s mad at someone he loves for smth that’s not his fault. Unfair, yes. Realistic, also yes.

Yeah this is fair. It’s ironic, really. Felix is super smart and clever, but emotionally, he’s a lot less mature than Adrien is.

I do think it’s likely that he cares for Adrien in some capacity, he’s just being really unfair towards him right now for things that aren’t his fault. If he actually saw Adrien being really hurt by his actions, if those consequences were thrown in Felix’s face, he may well change his tune.

The nitty gritty is watering down katara's character so she's just a meek girl ? Your lying If you really think that's the same character. The producers said they would take an axe to the main characters and that's where the show really suffers...also nothing is perfect people like you is why we get stuck with mediocrity

?? I finished episode 5 but what😭 how is katara just a meek girl, i feel like yes she has a little less rage but other than that she shows that shes smart and powerful and her own person? Explain what is watered down i feel like animation usually over-exaggerates facial expressions and voices for the most part, so i’m not surprised that katara has more subtle strength so far, and also the actress has a very kind face, but i think shes still able to show some of that anger. (I havent watched the water master fight yet so maybe thats where you’re talking about, so i cant speak on that)

Idk what taking an axe to the main characters means (like really cutting them apart? Cuz i doubt they would promote a show by saying its gonna be bad but who knows). But i feel like the characters are all pretty accurate with how they carry themselves, of course they’re younger so acting wont be perfect but i think the imperfections are what brings them to life. I know a lot of people hate the writing, i feel like it’s quite similar to the show? (Though its been maybe 3-4 years since i last rewatched it) and some lines especially from something previously animated are gonna sound awkward in real life, which is why generally i believe live actions arent necessary for any animation, though in this case i’m really enjoying just rewatching atla and my childhood be brought to life.

Nothing is perfect: ok i was using perfect mostly because i was very excited about it, of course i know theres things that could be changed to improve it but a lot of those things are impossible (like you cant get an actress thats EXACTLY katara and will make everyone happy, because shes a drawing) but overall, i think the landscapes come close to perfect (i’m just really into fantasy scenes and i think it’s so beautiful and impressive to see things like the omashu supply rail and the air temple come to life. And zuko’s boat looks so awesome and so accurate too.) And i thought the cgi looked slightly silly at first (especially air) but then i realized that we were always seeing drawings of aangs air in the animation which would look even stupider irl so i made my peace pretty quickly.

People like me is why we get stuck with mediocrity… hm. I feel like my opinion probably has nothing to do with what comes out on tv, especially because in this society haters have the real power, and you guys tearing it down are more likely to get it cancelled. I don’t think any production team takes an animated film or show and thinks ‘yea im gonna make this absolutely awful,’ (though i’m really not sure what they were thinking when making the pjo movie, its good as a standalone but they went so off course from the plot…) of course they’re all just trying to fit what they think into the show and express their own opinions, which are ultimately going to be a lot different than some people watching it.

Overall, ok i haven’t watched the og in years, so my memory on comparing each episode of the show to the live action is not going to be at the level of others (which i think boosts the enjoyability 100x over). But as i watch it, i remember tons of parts of the animation, and it makes me super happy that it has the same air as the show, albeit slightly more serious because they can’t fit all the funny filler episodes (if they ever created a live action lost appa episode i would lose it that cannot happen).

Maybe i sounded rude in my original post (i changed it quickly bc it was very angry at first lol) so sorry i know you’re all entitled to your opinion, it’s just i was SO EXCITED and then checked the tag on tumblr only to see that everyone hated it… i always feel inferior to people who really like films etc because i tend to enjoy things that other people hate, (like i really enjoyed the avatar way of water movie even if it was super long, and i know people DESPISED it). So maybe i seem like someone who is satisfied with mediocrity, and maybe i am, i focus mostly on the backgrounds and beauty of movies because im really into art and much less on acting and script (though i can appreciate beautiful characters, i was Blown Away by live action suki and hair down sokka my jaw dropped fr) i agree i am fairly simple to please in terms of this type of thing.

This idea has been cooking in my little noggin the last few days, but MAN. The bros were jerks when the MC first arrived at the HOL. Imagine a scenario where, after the bros have started to catch The Feelings but haven't properly acknowledged it to MC yet, a lesser demon asks the MC out on a date. And the MC says yes.

I mean this demon asked them out point blank like "I think you're super cute and I'd like to get to know you better" no "you better count yourself lucky The Great Mammon wants to take out a plain old human like you" or "WHY WOULD I WANT TO GO OUT WITH A NORMIE LIKE YOU but can we tho" or whatever emotionally constipated weirdness Lucifer has going on.

I just wanna see the bros realize "Oh shit I have feelings but I also have a huge handicap bc I was a BIG OLD JERK and they're not gonna sit around waiting for me to get my head out of my ass"

Oh boy he’s upset, he distracts himself with work and keeps telling himself that it doesn’t matter BECAUSE of all the work he has. He exhausts himself even more than usual because he can’t bear to even DREAM of them. He realizes this is a problem and finally apologizes for being as rude as he was.

Mammon-

“HUH?” He beats himself up so bad over it, while at the same time saying he doesn’t care. Everybody can tell he’s lying. He goes on a weird spending spree to try and buy them back. When it doesn’t really work, he realized maybe he should ask MC and listen to them.

Levi-

“They’d never wanna date some otaku like me!” He keeps telling himself that, but he can’t get the thought MC dating a LOWER demon out of his head. He runs to MCs room to hurry and get everything off his chest, but he says it in one go, without a break, before running back to his room. From what MC could make out, he apologizes for not being open, being rude and that he was going to work on himself.

Satan-

Mentally banging his head into a wall. He looks into some spells to maybe keep them for falling for this demon, but deep down he knows he can’t do something like this. He instead sits with his thoughts, overthinking everything. When he confides in Solomon, it clicks that he should be saying some of this to MC.

Asmo-

He has a line of demons waiting for him to ask him out and be with him, so why should it matter if one human doesn’t want him. So why does this one hurt so bad…? He wonders why MC means so much to him and how he can get them to reciprocate the same feelings. Is it his fault?

Beel-

He’s happy for MC! He thinks at least…he’s happy if you’re happy at least. Though he wonders if it’d be a bit immoral if he ate this lower level demon. Will start doing even more things for MC, thinking maybe he had done something wrong.

Belphie-

Unlike Mammon, he plays off not caring very well. I mean, he’s always tired and monotone, but this is because he can barely sleep. Every time he closes his eyes he can only picture MC with some other demon that ISNT him. He knows he messed up bad, he knows MC will always hate him for killing them. He’ll apologize, but doesn’t expect anything in return.

i'm not into burping like that, but seeing as you are, thought i'd share a lil sumn😌

lately, as in like the last month or so, my bf has releasing absolute belches in my face whenever he feels like it, in like a jokey sort of way. i play along and pretend to be disgusted by it- i'm like indifferent to it lmao, maybe because i'm so attracted to him gross shit like that doesn't phase me? (pretty boys who are nasty>>>>)

but anyway, yeah the way he's been like shamelessly burping like an inch away from my face, even if we're in front of our friends he does it to me unapologetically lmaoo; even if it's a smaller burp he makes sure to push it out close to me to draw a reaction from me (but most of the time they are the loud thick ones)

oh might as well tell you ab him farting in front of me for the first time too lmaooo

the first time we were on facetime actually, he was in the middle of talking, explaining something to me i can't remember what and then i just heard this high pitched squeaky sound that lasted like 5 seconds. i just assumed it was something else, but when he stopped talking and like smiled slightly it was obvious it was a fart😭😭 it was pretty funny and he wasn't that embarrassed about it, as he continued speaking soon after like nothing happened.

the second time was at my house,, we were chilling on my bed a bit after eating dinner (which is why he was so gassy ig). we were watching some movie i think and then that same similar high pitched fart broke the silence. i then ofc laughed and teased him about it and he was also laughing but kinda shrugged it off like "what?? its just a fart" type of thing

anywayy sorry this ask is so long💀💀 hope you've enjoyed it though,, would love to be mutuals so we can dm about how hot gassy men are and talk about scenarios (which i might even write) bc i need to like rant with someone abt it lmaoo

I came with more random band oc lore bits as well as this little relationship chart which may or may not be legible since I did it all on my phone lmao...

the reason why kiyoko is so big on keeping happy memories of her and her friends (with photography) is because she has an older brother who is always in and out of the hospital due to illness. she has almost no memories with him that didn't involve a hospital.

she's not on bad terms with her parents but is at home as little as possible because the vibes are always just bad. she feels a bit neglected cause her parents always focus on her brother, and every conversation is about him even on the good days. she's always with shiori because of this

nana does most of the songwriting. kiyoko is good at putting feelings into words and michiko is good at writing/wordplay bc of her extensive reading, so the two collaborate on lyrics. shiori is pretty artistic due to her fashion design background so she does things like posters and promo material. mai has the most raw musical expertise out of the group

mai's pet bird (a cockatiel) is named rocky

michiko also has a pet cat (grey tabby) named haru

nana's parents want her to go into a respectable field but she obviously wants to stay in music. she's super intelligent but skips class and intentionally tanks her grades so people think she isn't, and she won't be able to go to a good university like her parents want.

michiko has a big sweet tooth and is a frequent customer at yamabuki bakery. she's probably close acquaintances with saya, she's probably one of (if not the) only one not from her band that michiko can relax around. fuck it michiko is a popipa fan now

mai and nana were always set on doing music in the future. shiori wants to study fashion design, kiyoko would probably do photography (but potentially go full time into music in the future). michiko wasn't sure what she was gonna do in the future but just wants to stay with her friends.

the real reason why nana pursued music so heavily was so she could stay with mai. when mai almost quits the band, nana admits to her in private that she would quit too (despite nana being the glue that holds everyone together) because doing music isn't worth it without mai.

shiori is a big manga reader which leads her to have a bit of a crazy imagination and unrealistic expectations lol. like when mai and nana have their heart-to-heart shiori just pictures a tearful love confession under the moonlight like a shoujo anime lmao

shiori tries to bond with michiko out of their shared love for reading with little luck as their reading material is extremely different (michiko is a long novel person). michiko is also the most extreme introvery and shiori is the most extreme extrovert lol, so michiko probably finds her very overwhelming

nana and mai are third years, kiyoko and shiori are second years, michiko is either first or second - haven't decided.

nana calls everyone -san out of politeness and because she's kind of the mediator of the group. as the only one close enough to mai, she gets the -chan

kiyoko really looks up to her seniors and wants to learn everything she can from mai and nana to be the best musician she can be

NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING BBY

new guy alert: so my other coworkers son who’s a little younger like will come up behind me and grab my sides (ribs) and will scare me. and his hands can even linger there sometimes (this does NOT make me uncomfortable. i’ve known him for almost 2 years). and then he tickled me last week in the break room when it was just the 2 of us. he has played with the hem or my jeans before.

he called me the other night after work since he left before me and i wanted to talk to him. and then he had to let me go and said he’d call back. i didn’t think he would and he did. he’s always poking my ribs or something. (he did backhand me in the abdomen playfully a few weeks ago when i pretended to hit him)

BUTTTTT now he’s being distant as of yesterday. responded to one text asking when he’s off. he told me what time and ask why what’s up. and i texted like 4 messages bc i can never remember what all i need to say and told him to call me when he can. and it’s radio silent. :( ppl keep telling me he defs likes me but idk. it’s like anytime he shows me attention i feel weird and i question if i like him and i can be distant? but then same goes for him when i show him attention or any interest. like it feels like we have the same issue? idk.

he even asked the other night on the phone if i really do get scared and i said yes bc i do. and then asked if he’s grabbing my ribs too tight 🥺 like genuinely concerned. (he’s not grabbing them too tight)

but here’s the thing, him and i have been through this rodeo once before. last year when he was going through a toughish time he went off on me and apologized but then was rude so i blocked him but months before he said he’d get me something to the country he was visiting and basically the day i blocked him he was on his way to the country and i didn’t really see him for months since our jobs are seasonal. and back in like june/july, i found out he indeed did get me that bracelet in that country even after our big huge fight we had.

part of me feels as if he pushes people away when they get too close? (he comes from a “broken” home) and idk. like he’s a vvvv sweet person but i think he may freak when someone gets close. he’s not super close with ppl at work minus his family members who also work there.

i need to know, do you think he likes me?? orrrrr?

okay any boy that is into physical touch bears affection in my mind. i haven’t had a single touchy relationship with a boy that wasn’t rooted in a deep desire for something more.

UGH I HATE MIXED SIGNALS!! that’s very emotional whiplash of him, to go from phone calls and ticking to all quiet on the western front.

okay i think your assessment is right. i think closeness and the fear of getting hurt is especially frightening for him, and it’s easier to build up walls and minimise the hurt. i think just be there for him and see how it goes? because i defs think he likes you. like i’ve said before, boys aren’t that nice. and this kind of care makes me think something is there.

so when you see him at work tomorrow, don’t press him or do anything to call him out, these emotional issues take time and trust. just be especially kind and comforting, with as much soft physical touch as possible and try and find some way of telling him you were thinking of him in your radio silence. but not aggressively - like, i was watching this movie and i thought of you cause you might like it. something like that.

If you hang out a lot w someone with ADHD you might have frustrations about not being listened to. In my experience as someone with the dreaded, this isn’t actually the case - in fact, I’m trying really hard to listen.

The thing is, there are lots of different types of listening. If someone starts talking to me, I’m trying to figure out the ‘point’ of what they’re saying and therefore how I should be listening. If you launch into an anecdote, I might look distracted but that’s because I’m thinking

‘why is this person saying this? Is this connected to something we were talking about? Is this something they want advice on? Is this a dream they had? Are they going to expect a response? If so what kind? Is this a secret? Is this difficult for them to talk about? Do I need to comfort them?’

This thought process can result in me looking distracted, and indeed it can get in the way of properly taking in what you’re saying. It’s not laziness or rudeness - in fact I am putting a lot of work into understanding how I can best support the thing you’re saying. But without context, I am LOST when you just start talking.

Whereas, if you start by saying the ‘point’, I don’t need to go through that thought process and I can relax, listen, and respond appropriately. EG if you say ‘this is unconnected, but a funny story I wanted to tell you!’ Then I know that I don’t need to connect what you’re saying to our previous convo, and that I should focus on the humour of what you’re saying. Or, ‘I’m not looking for advice, but could I vent to you for a minute?’ Then I know not to filter your words through my opinion, and to be supportive and quiet.

It’s hard to describe, but without that context, it’s like I’m trying to translate your words into 5 possible genres, and with every word narrow down to the most likely one. Maybe this is bc ADHD ppl tend to have one eye on the immediate future, and so are formulating the ‘genre’ of our response as we listen, rather than afterwards.

It’s also super helpful to start with how long the story will be - ‘this is quite long, so shall we sit down and have a cup of tea?’ is such a beautiful thing to say. Again, if you launch into it, it feels as though you’ve taken my concentration on a run without telling it whether it’s a 2k run or a marathon.

It all sounds pretty trivial (which is one of the greatly frustrating things ab having these symptoms) but is actually very profound. Imagine only ever being able to start reading a book in the middle - how confusing that would be, and difficult to relate to, enjoy or be invested in. That’s the best way I can describe the feeling. And I so very badly want to be a good friend to you and make you feel heard! And I am so very insecure that you think I’m letting you down!

I find this mostly happens with close friends because in superficial interactions I honestly just fake it and hope for the best. But I don’t want to fake listen to you! I really really want to hear it all.

Give us an abstract for ur stories! State the aims, genre, and framework! Give us a word count! Kind of joking but not really.

Promise that if you try this, you’ll have more fulfilling convos with ur ADHD beloveds. X

So ya, it sucks that Kurt didn’t have as much control, I’ll discuss more in Preggers tho.

Flufftober Day 1: Meet cute / meet ugly

Pairing: Tendou Satori x Chubby!Reader

Summary: There’s lots of sweet treats at the bakery, but Tendou only wants the one working behind the counter

“Hey I don’t know about you, but that girl working the register is super cute!” Bokuto exclaimed to the group, catching all their attention...including the girl behind the counter. (Y/n) ignored the comment, thinking it was a joke. She loved her job but because the bakery was so close to many neighbouring schools, lots of people her own age came in as well. Some were kind but as expected from teens, a lot were rude and vile, making jabs about the way she carried her weight. So for all she knew, the loud mouth owl looking man was picking fun at her.

The fuss had gotten Tendou to look up from his manga and boy, was he glad. His wide eyes widened more as he was blown away. Her (h/c) hair caught in the light perfectly, styled in a way that it was out of her face, giving him a better view of it. Her cheeks and jaw were round and soft, lips plump, covered in a light layer of sparkly gloss. Her (e/c) eyes were focused on the customer in front of her, intently listening to what they wanted before totaling them up and sending them off with a smile. A smile he knew he’d be thinking about for the rest of the day. Tendou wanted to be the cause of that smile, to have her focused on him like that.

“Tendou has offered to go order for us.” Ushijima spoke up, causing him to quickly bring his attention back to the group.

“Ushiwaka! I didn’t- I- wait...I see what you’re doing here!” his grin grew as he eyed his friend who still had a blank face, a barely noticeable smile on his face. To any other it’d look like a straight face but Tendou knew his best friend well. “You’re trying to play matchmaker for me and cutie-chan!” he sighed as he snuck a glance at her before turning back to the group.

“That’s nice and all but, I don’t think she’d be into me like that. She’d definitely prefer someone more like one of you!” he smiled once more, hiding his hurt behind it. He had never had much luck with women, something he accepted well into his early years of school when girl’s would run away from him, screaming in terror. Tendou had a lot of features he enjoyed about himself, but he knew that most would never learn to love himself the way he had, which he was okay with!

“Really? Is that why she keeps looking over at you in specific?” Kuro asked with a smirk, causing all of them to not so subtly look over. Their eyes met, catching the two of them off guard before she looked away, going back to restocking the display windows with more treats.

“You know what? Fuck it.” sliding out of the booth, he walked over to the counter, waiting for her to finish her stocking. He didn’t wanna interrupt her flow of concentration. He smiled at the sound of her humming, watching the way the fat of her tummy would jiggle each time she’d pop up. It was too cute!

“O-oh hi! Can I help you?” she asked, flipping open her notepad. He smile grew wider, leaning down to her height.

“Can I get four bubble teas, a muffin, a few of your different cookie flavors and- what do you recommend? You look like you have good taste in snacks.” he winked at her, causing her to giggle. She hummed as she thought about it, looking at what she’d choose from today’s selection.

“We actually have my favorite today! I recommend the cinnamon streusel bundt cake. It tastes good on it’s own or with ice cream.” her eyes lit up as she talked, pitching it to him. He wanted it badly but he also knew she could’ve described the most ungodly thing to him and he’d still bought it because she was suggesting it.

“Well two of those then! One for me and one for you, cutie-chan.” he melted at the expression on her face. A mix of shock and enjoyment, as though no one had ever said anything like that to her before.

“It-it’s okay, you don’t have to order it for me just because it’s my favo-”

“I want to,” he placed his hand over her, their eyes meeting once more. “Please?” biting the inside of her cheek she nodded, smiling up with him.

“Alright.” after he paid for the money, he grabbed the drinks from her hands, placing his free one over their hands.

“Tendou hurry up! We’ve gotta get back before they notice we’re gone!” Kuro called, causing him to huff in annoyance. Reluctantly he gave the girl a goodbye before rushing out the door.

(Y/n) watched as he left, a smile on her face. So that was his name, Tendou. It suited him just as everything about him did. The only thing that made her upset about him was that she hadn’t taken the time to ask for his number! In all honesty, she was too stunned. Looking down at the piece of cake he had bought her she smiled. However, her brows furrowed at a piece of paper folded under her cake. Lifting it up, her heart began to race.

‘(Y/n)!! Sorry, is that weird? That’s what it said on your name tag so hopefully that’s your name. I left my number at the bottom of this paper. Do you have any thoughts on the use of AAVE for Nile (or lack thereof) in TOG fanfiction? I've been reading some Book of Nile fic and some writers seem to write her as a Millennial™ (using words like "fave" and "woke") but never acknowledge her Blackness in her patterns of speech. I know we don't see her use as much AAVE in the films, but I would argue she's in situations where code-switching would be valued (first in a "professional" environment in the army, then around a group of non-Black strangers).

Hi anon! I have many thoughts on this and I'm honored you asked me! But I should start by saying I'm white and any thoughts Black fans and especially Black American fans have on this that they want to share would be beyond lovely. (I'm not gonna tag anybody bc that feels rude but please add onto this post if any of y'all see this and want to!)

The main reason I personally avoid AAVE for Nile in my own fics is because I'm not Black. But Nile-centric fics by Black writers tend to avoid using much of it too, at least from what I've noticed/understood, and my guess is it's largely for the reason you mention, that she's in situations that encourage code-switching.

In movie canon Nile is highly competent at tailoring her language to each situation she finds herself in. This fantastic linguistics analysis meta shows how skillfully Nile chooses her vocabulary and grammar to meet her goals with different conversation partners in different contexts. In comics canon Nile had a bunch of different civilian jobs before joining the Marines, so she would've had experience code-switching in the ways that made sense for all those different contexts as well as the Marines and her family and high school and wherever else she spent her time before we met her. And now she's spending her time with a handful of immortals none of whom are native English speakers and a fellow Black American but one with a Queen's English UK accent whose professional experience is in the CIA where high-status code-switching is often an absolute must for success or even survival.

Fics featuring Nile are charged with extrapolating from that to how it might show up in her use of language that she's coping with a traumatic separation from her family and her career and pretty much everything she's ever known and now she needs to be able to make herself understood to people who seem to care about her and each other but are super duper in crisis, three (soon to be four) of whom predate Modern English entirely and the only one who's anywhere near her contemporary she's not supposed to talk to for a century. All of these people are telling her that pretty much any contact with any mortals poses an existential threat to her and the rest of the group. How the FUCK is she supposed to cope with that, like, generally? And would it be a more effective way for her to cope if she talked to Andy Joe and Nicky using the speech patterns that she used to use with her mom and brother, to at least retain that part of her identity even if it means having to do a lot of explaining, or would it meet her needs better to prioritize Andy Joe and Nicky understanding what she means with her words over using the particular words and grammar forms she used with her family?

I've seen several fics, both Nile-centric / BoN and otherwise, explore this a little bit in how/whether Nile uses Millennial™ speak. It's often a theme in Nile texting Booker despite the exile because of the popular headcanon that he as The Tech Guy is the only other immortal who understands memes. But Nile's much-younger-than-Booker mom probably uses Boomer and/or Gen X memes and Andy has been adapting to new communication styles for forever as evidenced by her canon high level of fluency with standard-American-accented English.

Which brings us back to people avoiding AAVE because they're not Black and they don't want to make mistakes (or they're not Black and they don't want to get yelled at for making mistakes, though I think many people overestimate how much they'll get yelled at while underestimating how much these mistakes can hurt). I can imagine some Black fans hold back from using much AAVE in fic because they don't want to share in-group stuff with white people who are likely to then adopt and ruin it, as white people so often do with Black cultural stuff. Some links about this including a great Khadija Mbowe video. I'm saying this gently, anon, because you might not know: woke, an example you cited as Millennial™ speak, is AAVE, and that's gotten erased by so many white people appropriating it and using it incorrectly online.

And also there's the part where fandom is a hobby and you never know when you're reading a fic that's the very first thing someone's ever written outside of a school assignment. This cultural considerations of language shit takes a level of effort and skill that not everybody puts into every fic, or even could if they wanted to because they haven't had time to build their skills yet. It's definitely easier for non-Black fans to project our millennial feels onto Nile than to do the layers of research and self-reflection it requires to depict what Blackness might mean to Nile, and it's not surprising that often people sharing their hobby creations on the internet have gone the easier route. There's not even necessarily shame in doing what's easier. It's just frustrating and often hurtful when structural white supremacy means that 3-dimensional Black characters are rare in media and thoughtful explorations of them in fandom are seen by the majority of fans as not-easy to make and therefore Nile Freeman, the main character in The Old Guard (2020) dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood, has the least fic and meta and art made about her of our 5 main immortals.

I've been active in different fandoms off and on for twenty years and I barely managed to write 5,000 words about Sam Wilson across multiple different fics in the 7 years since I fell in love with him. There's an alchemy to which characters we connect with, and on top of that which characters we connect with in a way that causes us to create stuff about them. Something about Nile Freeman finally tipped me over the edge from a voracious reader to a voracious writer. It's not for me to judge which characters speak to other individuals to the level of creating content about them, but I do think it's important for us to notice, and then work to fight, the pattern where across this fandom as a whole Nile gets way less content, and way less depth in so much of the content that's in theory about her, than any of these other characters.

Anyway, back to language. My two long fics feature Nile with several Black friends — Copley and OCs and cameos from other media — but all of those characters except Alec Hardison from Leverage aren't American. It's very possible I'm guilty of stereotyping Black British speech patterns in I See Your Eyes Seek a Distant Shore. I watched hours and hours of Black haircare YouTube videos in the research for that fic and I modeled my OCs' speech patterns on what I heard from some of those YouTubers as well as what I've heard people like John Boyega and Idris Elba saying in interviews, but the thing about doing your best is you still might fuck up.

I'm slowly making progress on my WIP where Nile and Sam Wilson are cousins, and what ways of talking with a family member might be authentic for Nile is a major question I need to figure out. For that, I'm largely modeling my writing choices on how I hear my Black friends and colleagues talking to each other. I haven't overheard colleagues talking in an office in a long-ass time, but back when that was a thing, I remember seeing a ton of nuance in the different ways many of my Black colleagues would talk to each other. Different people have different personalities! And backgrounds! And priorities! A few jobs ago my department was about 1/3 Black and we worked closely with Obama administration staff many of whom were Black and there was SO MUCH VARIETY in how Black people talked to each other, about work and workplace-appropriate personal stuff, where I and other white coworkers could hear. There are a few work friends in particular who I have in my head when I'm trying to imagine how Sam and Nile might talk to each other. From the outside looking in, God DAMN is shit complicated, intellectually and interpersonally and spiritually, for Black people who are devoting their professional lives to public service in the United States.

One more aspect of this that I have big thoughts on but I need to take extra care in talking about is the idea of acknowledging Nile's Blackness in her patterns of speech. There's no one right way to be Black, and Nile's a fictional character created by a white dude but there are plenty of real-life Black Americans who don't use much or even any AAVE, for reasons that are complicated because of white supremacy. (Highly highly recommend this video by Shanspeare on the harms of the Oreo stereotype.)

Something that's not the same but has enough similarity that I think it's worth talking about is my personal experience with authenticity and American Jewish speech patterns. My Jewish family members don't talk like they're in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I've known lots of people who do talk that way (or the millennial version of it), some of whom have questioned my Jewishness because I don't talk that way. That hurts me. Sometimes when another Jew tells me some shit like "I've never heard a Jew say y'all'd've," I can respond with "well now you have asshole, bless your Yankee-ass heart," because the myth of Dixie is a racist lie but I will totally call white Northerners Yankees when they're being shitty to me for being Southern, and this particular Jew fucking revels in using "bless your heart" with maximum polite aggression, especially with said Yankees. But sometimes I don't have it in me to say anything and it just quietly hurts having an important part of me disbelieved by someone who shares that important part of me. The sting isn't quite the same when non-Jews disbelieve or discount my Jewishness, but that hurts too.

Who counts as authentically Jewish is a messy in-group conversation and it doesn't really make sense to explain it all here. Who counts as authentically Jewish is a matter of legal status for immigration, citizenship, and civil rights in Israel, and it's my number 2 reason after horrific treatment of Palestinians that I'm antizionist. But outside that extremely high-stakes legal situation, it can just feel really shitty to not be recognized as One Of Us, especially by your own people.

It can also feel really shitty to be The Only One of Your Kind in a group, even if that group is an immortal chosen family who all loves each other dearly. Sometimes especially in a situation like that where you know those people love you but there are certain things they don't get about you and will never quite be able to. I'm definitely projecting at least a little bit of my "lonely Jew who will be alone again for yet another Jewish holiday" stuff onto Nile when at the end of I See Your Eyes Seek a Distant Shore she's thinking about being the only Black immortal and moving away from the community she'd built with a mostly-Black group of mortals in that fic. Maybe that tracks, or maybe that's fucked up of me.

Basically, this got very long but it's complicated, writing about experiences that aren't your own takes skill which in turn takes time and practice to build, writing about experiences not your own that our society maligns can cause a lot of harm if done badly, it can also cause a lot of harm when a large enough portion of a fandom just decides to nope out of something that's difficult and risky because then there's just not much content about a character who deserves just a shit ton of loving and nuanced content, people are individuals and two people who come from the exact same cultural context might show that influence in all kinds of different ways, identity is complicated, language is complicated, writing is hard, and empathy and humility and doing our best aren't a guarantee of avoiding harm but they do go a long way in helping people create thoughtful content about a character as awesome and powerful and kind and messy and scared and curious and WORTHY as Nile Freeman.
