One of the worst things about the ending of Naruto was actually that Naruto became Hokage. He became Hokage to be recognized and seen for who he was by the people around him, but he already got that during the Pain Arc.
We see at the Waterfall of Truth that Naruto actually feels contempt toward many villagers for how they treated them. But we never got a full resolution for that in the real world. For the sake of consistent writing Naruto should have much more complicated emotions, hell being the Hokage was totally secondary to bringing Sasuke home (which Naruto says during the beginning of Shippuden).
So, it would’ve been far more interesting and consistent for nobody to become Hokage at the end of Naruto (it’s not like Kakashi actually wanted to be Hokage either). The leaf is ran by a Jonin council who undertake the building of a new world under the guidance of people like Kakashi and Naruto (but it’s mostly a collective effort).
Naruto and Sasuke would’ve become Jonin, Naruto would’ve grown out his hair to be like Jiraiya (not that long, just a shoulder length ponytail, but he will not be fucking balding). The running of the leaf village becomes more and more of a transparent affair that even everyday people are aware of, not the shadowy cabal that it was under Hiruzen’s regime. The main threat would be loyalists toward Madara’s ideology who really believed in the Infinite Tsukuyomi (not space aliens). The Konoha 13 aren’t forced into undeveloped ridiculous ships for the sake of editors or trying to pump out a next Gen sequel (like Seriously, none of the Shinobi from the previous Gen had kids except Asuma & Kurenai). Hell I think it’s bullshit Neji died so let’s just redact that too. Sasuke obviously doesn’t do jail time like he did because if saving the entire planet isn’t a pardonable action idk what is, rip to those samurai tho.
The government of the leaf village, which before was essentially just an elective millitary dictatorship, slowly becomes more democratic and resembling an actual pseudo nation as opposed to a millitary colony. The feudal lords are slowly rendered irrelevant and basically atrophy into powerless figureheads (and any who resist probably become villains in whatever story gets told in this scenario). Underage Shinobi are banned from undertaking life threatening missions, that’s gotta be a big one. No kids fighting to the death.
So by the time Naruto is in his late 20s to early 30s he’s made Hokage by the people of the village hidden in the leaves in the very first actual election ever held that wasn’t just between feudal lords and councilors (if he even wants the position that is). His scalp is fine, he’s thriving and moisturized, Orochimaru and Kabuto are locked away at the bottom of the craziest prison you can imagine. He’s not stuck in a boring marriage that he avoids, Sasuke isn’t stuck in a loveless marriage with a woman he won’t even kiss. Sakura is girlbossing somewhere in the corner. Tsunade gets to have all the chicken breast and alcohol she wants and Kakashi is a retired dog dad.

Shikamaru’s Sexism Could’ve Worked
I think everyone’s aware that all throughout part 1 Shikamaru was a raging misogynist, but a lot of people ignore it. It makes sense why; it’s an immediate character ruiner and the author couldn’t even be bothered to remember it when shippuden rolled around. On one hand, it’s funny to think that the implication of Shikamaru’s sexism dissipating over the time skip (a time skip that characters only matured over) is that sexism is something only the mentally equivalent of children have and you’re supposed to mature out of it. On the other hand, I see it as yet another missed opportunity.
Addressing the idea of biases is not only an interesting topic when it’s actually discussed, but it’s also in line with the series’s theme about understanding bringing people together. Yes, it’s funny to say bigotry is the result of immaturity, but it isn’t accurate. Bigotry is the result of the belief of a group of people is fundamentally different from you that ranges from simple biases that align with common stereotypes (like women being submissive, Jewish people being greedy, etc.) to believing a group isn’t human.
I don’t think Shikamaru is quite extreme enough to view women as nonhuman, but he doesn’t just have simple biases. Keep in mind that I mean the sort of everyday biases most people have when I say “simple biases”. They’re more expectations for how someone will act based on a group they’re a part of and they’re mostly subconscious. Bigotry is an extremely harsh term for it because it’s just ignorance. A person hasn’t interacted with a group much so they base their conclusions about that group on what they’ve heard from others or seen through media. Shikamaru isn’t just presumptuous, he makes judgments and condescends women based on their sex. I’d say he’s somewhere in the lower-middle range; he isn’t outright discriminatory, but he’s an asshole coworker who says some dumb shit.
So, what would I do with him? I’d give him an arc similar to the ones Sokka from ATLA and Louis from Beastars have. The character’s beliefs are challenged by a character/through a scene(Team Avatar get captured by the kyoshi warriors and Legoshi’s character respectively), then while still in a state of worldview confusion, they interact with people from the group they’re biased against which changes their perspective(Kyoshi warriors/Suki and the Shishigumi). I don’t want anything to think that I believe it’s the responsibility of the marginalized group to educate or walk ignorant people to a place of tolerance or understanding because it’s not, but I do believe that the only way you can view people as equals is by interacting with them as equals.
I see it playing out like this:
The chunin exams stay the same with Shikamaru still beating Kin and Temari. The focus is establishing his character, his strengths and weaknesses in combat, and his dynamic with the other cast members.
Shikamaru gets a scene to show his opinion on Tsunade becoming the first female Hokage to expand on the assumptions he’s working under specifically (women only care about superficial and frivolous things, and they’re weak in combat).
During the Sasuke Retrieval arc, he gets his ass absolutely kicked by Tayuya and he’s saved by Temari, who says she arrived to help mend the relationship between Suna and Konoha. (Tayuya challenges his assumption that women are weak and Temari challenges the assumption that women are superficial.)
Over the training period/in shippuden, Shikamaru would further interact with the female cast (on screen) and have his biases challenged even more by characters like Sakura, Ino, Hinata, TenTen, Temari, and Tsunade furthering their skills and showing competency both in and out of combat.
This could culminate in something dramatic like a fight against a female villain (Konan, genderbent Hidan, or new villain) that he actually takes seriously or he could simply move past his ignorance.
I know that you can argue that all of this happened, but I’m not giving Kishimoto points for doing all of his good character writing/development off screen.

If you could how would you fix ino's development
i love you and also im sorry.
ino is such an interesting character, kishimoto took your average pretty mean girl and made her actually super sweet and caring, adaptable, and intelligent
i actually like her personality a lot, she values her looks and can be a bit crabby but compared to sakura, ino is a lot more willing to work with her teammates. she actively takes charge to the point that shikamaru and choji look to her for what to do
id keep her "crush" on sasuke but id instead make it something that sakura misinterpreted and ino went along with bc she thought sakura just didnt want to be friends anymore. she still flirts with sasuke but in a joking way.
id keep her rivalry with sakura but makes it explicit that she wasnt the one that instigated it, id also make her less "mean" in a stereotypical bully way since she was the one that defended sakura from bullies in the first place. she should still be sassy and a bit of a hot head but not overtly rude to others.
also id have her win her fight with sakura, just bc i think it contributes better to sakura's development, but also opens up an extra fight in the chunin exams. not sure who id pit her against but im just saying it would give her more stuff to do (maybe shino? they were both top students at the academy)
she goes on the sasuke retrieval mission and stays behind to help choji fight. theres no reason that she shouldnt go, choji can still almost die and ino can use the time he bought her to finish off orochimaru's lackey but ino has PROVEN to be a good ninja, even if her fighting isnt that great shes fantastic crowd control…come the fuck on.
development wise…no healing abilities…it just felt so tacked on and she didn't nearly have as much passion for it as sakura did. id focus 100% on her clan's reconnaissance bc their abilities are super interesting. would def give her an upgrade regarding her body switching jutsu so shes not left unconcious on the ground with every technique. when shes a genin thats fine but ur telling me sasuke can summon God and ino still can't control people without falling asleep?
okay the puppet scene with the "Mind Puppet Switch Cursed Seal Technique" literally has not left my mind its SO cool and I wish ino learned to use it. is it "ethical"? no. might even be a war crime. but thats fine i think. let ino be a little scary.
AND!!! SUNA LITERALLY HAS A PUPPET MASTER!!! Ino can train with kankuro or at least ASK for assistance
ALSO. OH MY GOD. GIVE HER MORE TO DO IN THE HIDAN AND KAKUZU ARC HOLY SHIT. that arc literally just ended up being about shikamaru (based) and naruto (???) why weren't ino and choji more present!! naruto literally appeared to save the day with his new jutsu when this mission shouldve been team 10 and team 10 ONLY (kakashi is on thin ice)
i like the confrontation between shikamaru and hidan in the forest, thats fine, but ino and choji should be absolutely duking it out with kakazu and his family of puppets! you know who else uses puppets/external tools? INO. Have her try to control kakuzu's external guys while choji beats him up, naruto arriving on the scene feels cheap :/ have kakuzu remark that "oh the strategist is gone" and then ino just immediately takes over as the leader and thinks of a plan because shes teammates with shikamaru's lazy ass and also BEING SMART IS LITERALLY SO IMPORTANT TO HER CHARACTER
AND GIVE HER (AND CHOJI) A SCENE WHERE SHE MOURNS ASUMA. OH MY GOD. HER FUCKING TEACHER JUST DIED. Ino is sidelined sooo much in team 10 its insane. maybe she and her dad (while not super close) talk about what its like to lose people you love, her dad has been a ninja for decades, he would comfort her. have her arrange a bouquet and place it on asuma's grave, have her break down crying over her teacher! this would also be interesting since we dont spend as much time with team 10, but would be able to see that the side characters have their own lives and feelings outside of naruto.
regarding romance ive personally always seen her as a lesbian but her relationship with sai is fine i guess. if she and sai are endgame id like more of a buildup to it. but if i can get my way she and sakura end up together <3
i think shes fine in the war arc, but the war arc itself is something i just wouldnt include if i were to rewrite naruto
also her blank period outfit is UGLY throw that shit OUT girl

Give me a Naruto rewrite where Sasuke and Naruto are dating before Sasuke leaves Konoha.
It's way more gutting that Sasuke still decides to leave, even after they've confessed and have been building something. After a heartfelt, "I want to get stronger together with you."
And then Itachi shows up and it proves to Sasuke that love is not enough. That he could have lost Naruto then and was helpless to stop it. So how does he seek to fix this? By killing Naruto ofc. Cause no one can take him if Sasuke kills him first. He is in control. Plus, the mangekyo ofc, which is the reason he will cite, but it's deeper than that.
The plot still moves the same way, but now it's overly clear what is going on between Sasuke and Naruto.

boruto rewrite where the show actually still focuses on the original characters from naruto, but we're seeing them face their struggles that come with being adults in the society they live in and after going through what they did. their children are also in the show and we're given their perspective on the events compared to their parents'.
the overall plot revolves around naruto trying to change the shinobi system. he knows first hand how terrible the repercussions are when children are forced to be soldiers, and now that he's the hokage, he finally has the power to change it.
the only problem is, not everyone agrees with him. many believe by changing the age that shinobi begin their training, they won't be as strong later on and the village will become weaker over the years. not only that, but some people just don't understand why naruto feels this way. they were shinobi all their life and they turned out just fine — why fix what isn't broken?
it causes conflict within the cast and allows us to delve into each character more, showing why they feel the way they do and how their experiences have built up to the person they are.
besides that, other characters get their own storylines as well that connect with the theme of recovering from trauma.
gaara realizes that he's only ever lived for his village — as a soldier, a weapon, the kazekage. he works himself to the bone for his village while ignoring his basic needs, still having not realized he's a human just like everyone else. when he gets shinki, he realizes what it's like to prioritize something; what it's like to nurture and love.
sakura works at a hospital for young shinobi, doubling as both a healer and a therapist of sorts. she listens to the children tell their stories and gives them a shoulder to try on. she saw what being alone did to her teammates and she doesn't want any other child to go through what they did.
during her time at the hospital, she slowly begins to see pieces of herself within her patients. her trauma, which she's always pushed away and ignored, starts to come out. she's forced to face these memories she's always tried to bury deep. she struggles with understanding it as well as feeling validated compared to what naruto and sasuke had to go through.
she also struggles with her marriage to sasuke as she starts to unpack all the terrible things he's done to her. she's knows why he did them and she can justify his actions as much as she wants, but it doesn't change the fact he traumatized and tried to kill her at one point.
hinata's would focus on the hyuga. she's an outsider to them without any power. when she was stripped of her title and allowed to marry naruto, she thought it was a dream come true. she was so confident that hanabi would change the clan, that the branch system would be destroyed and neji wouldn't have died in vain.
only, without hinata, hanabi began to crack under the pressure of the elders and her father until she became just like them. the seal system is still in place, the branch families are still treated as servants.
it's a lot about generational trauma. how no matter how much hinata tried to change things for hanabi, she was always destined to fall into the same path as her father. only by recognizing this and making the changes her family refused to do in the past, are they able to change things.
i think there could also be something about how once, a long time ago, hiashi had wanted to change the hyūga. he wanted to dispel the main/side branch family system so his brother could be free. but overtime, he became complacent — very similar to hanabi.
as for the kids, i would show the differences between them based on how their parents feel about them being raised as soldiers.
for example, shikatema would have no problem with the shinobi system (at first) and their child would be entered into the academy and ready to become a ninja.
boruto, however, was raised by parents who want to change the system and hate the senseless violence, therefore he was not enrolled. this causes him to have some resentments for his parents as he's in the minority of children who aren't attending the ninja academy. he's viewed as a weak and soft-hearted by his companions and he hates it. maybe he goes against his parents and attends the academy in secret somehow.
there's a lot you can do with each character, honestly. i won't go further into it unless asked, but here's my main thoughts. i have a lot of idea with how to conclude the arcs as well, but i'm not sure how people would feel about it.
gaara stepping down as kazekage and leaving suna, sakura divorcing sasuke as she realized she never truly loved him romantically, hinata becoming the hyūga head/disbanding the hyūga, etc. many ideas.

incoherent naruto rant incoming
ill never understand why the series sets up perfect conditions for some sort of movement for mass societal change but then goes "that's okay though!"
like the chunin exams has people dying before its even over with the third hokage going "we do these exams because you are human weapons and the last stage is so public so we can show off your skills to potential clients, not for your personal growth." but then an arc later they have the old fart give some speech about the need for peace and cooperation and not conflict, for some reason
or how rampant nepotism is? the first hokage and second were brothers. the third was the first's student, the fourth was HIS student, the fifth was HIS student, etc. etc.
the whole point of the akatsuki is theyre a group of people disillusioned with this reality and then turned to violence and mass murder, originally starting as an anti-war organization in a world where the economies of the major villages are centered around war
i swear to god in an alternate reality we could've had a series about how change is good instead of like. the uchiha are inherently bound to hatred conspiracy theory is true actually and space aliens try to take over the world suddenly but in the end everything goes back to normal :)
i genuinely can't tell if the stuff above was purposefully set up for what COULD have been a plot like that but fell apart or if kishimoto wasn't reading what he was writing

The invitation is natural. Come and sleep at home. It's the next step. He guides you to his kitchen, ask you to sit on the stool. Tonight he’s cooking. You join him after 5 minutes. You couldn’t stay still. And yet after another 5 minutes, you stay still with your arms around his waist.
Come to my house. You laugh foolishly on the couch. Not so loud. You tell him. The neighbors. I don’t care about the neighbors. He says. We don’t care about the neighbors tonight.
His fingers playing with your hands, little by little he gets closer. He puts his hands under your thighs to bring you against him. You smile, your cheeks are warm. He smiles, his ears are red. Your voices get softer, you whisper so that your faces come closer.
Come sleep at my place. We won’t sleep. We’ll laugh and forget the time. It’s too late, too early. Let’s wait for the sunrise. It’s beautiful. Yes, it is but you’re more beautiful. Come on, come to my place. Yeah, come on. Let him see how you fit perfectly in his home.

Zetsu is interesting because of how obvious it is that he was retconned. During the Immortals Arc we hear him say “When you’re all alone, the only thing you can trust is yourself” (some translations even say “sad and alone”). Of course everybody theorized at the time he was from the hidden Grass village. His early series cannibalism also blatantly contradicts the later retcon that Zetsu don’t eat.
And when Nagato states the motivations of each Akatsuki member the paneling explicitly lists Zetsu as “land” (which is ya know not the same thing as wanting to resurrect a dormant alien goddess to fight her evil space clan, if anything this is super contradictory since Kaguya was a calamitous force who sucked chakra from the earth). I also think it’s so interesting that pre retcon he still is in the inner circle who actually knows “Madara” is the leader, a very select group of people that only include Pain and Konan (and even then Zetsu speaks directly to Obito with a level of familiarity that even Pain cannot boast).
Ideally, I would’ve wanted Zetsu to be the product of some horrible experiment by the Hidden Grass to recreate the power of Wood release, creating some plant-human hybrid with his own unique jutsu based off wood release (we know that Hashirama mostly manipulates branches/roots and pollen, Zetsu seems to “branch” off into spores and clones). He would’ve been used as corpse disposal and the ultimate spy. He doesn’t identify much with people, the result of having to separate himself from the corpses he eats, he can’t be thinking about their feelings or families or what they named their pets. But he can feel the land, almost speak to it, and he listens. He becomes so attached to the land, it’s the only thing he can talk to other than himself (the result of his fractured personality), so naturally seeing it scarred by war is traumatizing for him.
Eventually he would’ve known too much and barely escaped death when his village decided to terminate him. He would’ve only been rescued from that path when he met a traumatized boy hiding behind a mask, and the two basically go from there, the only two who carry on Madara’s true will of creating a perfect dream world and correcting Kaguya’s sin of eating the fruit of chakra. Zetsu could’ve even been the last one to close the door so to speak, content to finally rest and leave the land alone.

You know what would be a somewhat interesting idea/writing prompt? Rewriting/fixing the Naruto series but only being allowed to reference the chunin exams. You can reuse specific character names/concepts, but the plot development, character arcs, character dynamics, and themes are all based on what was shown/said/alluded to during the chunin exams.

Sukea/Kakashi x Reader
Warnings: none!
Tumblr media
Imagine meeting Sukea for the first time.. He feels so damn familiar, but you can’t put your finger on it.
Could it be his Chakra signature?
You ask him out to lunch to find out a few more things about him. Sukea claims he was in the ANBU and probably has passed by you from time to time. Yeah, that’s probably why. .
Second time meeting him, and he’s hanging out with Team 7 without their leader. Something about finding out his face? Sukea attempts to convince you by saying, “Well, it would be a good team exercise for them wouldn’t it?” There it is again, another strike of familiarity. You’re so close to figuring it out, yet so far. After a day’s work of failing the “S Rank” mission that is unmasking your coworker, Sukea takes you out to dinner for the trouble.
By the third date, you two are on close terms. Ran into each other a couple of times in and out of Team 7 unmasking shenanigans.
You notice he doesn’t like sweets or fried food when you go out to eat. His eyes are very expressive. And for some reason avoids Guy like a plague.
The realization hits you hard. It’s no wonder why you don’t feel guilty falling head over heels for the handsome photographer. This fucker is the same person as the copy ninja you’ve secretly loved for the past decade. No words are spoken on the matter. For now, the reveal is closed behind tight lips to see how far this man will go.
How much of his act is real, you wonder. Where the lines blur between Kakashi and Sukea, you’re not really sure.
Fourth official date, you pay special close attention to his mannerisms. No matter how good an actor one can be, cracks manage to find their way to the surface. The way he pulls his hand back, hesitant, then allows himself to touch yours. Connecting the gap between you and him. A kiss was stolen that night. Then another, turning into a heated passion that abruptly stops. Sukea pries himself off of you and excuses himself to go home.
On the fifth date, he appears nervous. Is that sweat starting to form on his forehead? Sukea swallows what could be guilt. Your lips press to a thin line. Waiting. Expecting. A part of you finds this amusing. Seeing him struggle to find the strength to spill the truth. You know that the face you’ve uttered sweet words to belong to someone close to you. How far those romantic connections go when it actually came to Kakashi, is uncertain.
As he’s about to open his mouth for what seems like the sixth time, you interrupt him. “I know.”
Relief. Guilt. Confusion.
Once again, Kakashi is at a loss for words. A few seconds pass by followed by a meek apology. There was no intention of hurting you. He hopes that you would forgive him. Every once emotion ‘Sukea’ had whenever he was with you was real.
Something about being masked, well in his case unmasked, felt more natural to interact with you. Talking, making jokes, all came easy. The only problem: after coming clean would you still be able to look at him the same way? Internally he prayed before this date you won’t hate him. That you’d believe the words he mumbles. Even now Kakashi worries that you love the ‘made up persona’ of him more.
A stifled laugh causes him to look up at you through the messy silver hair that’s been held up in a wig.
Of course you’d still love him. Masked or unmasked.
Both of your hands take either side of Kakashi’s face and pull him in for a kiss.
How else would you have found out his little persona so quickly?

I'd have ino lose to sakura so she can realize that she has to focus on more so being a proper ninja rather than her beauty
would also work tbh!! she can even have her own training arc with her dad or another jonin, literally anything would be more interesting than what the manga provided...
i think we can agree that having them tie in that fight was so unrewarding 😭

᯽ I’m thinking about hugs or more so the comfort of one
There was nothing quite like the comfort of a hug. Or more specifically, his hugs. It had a way of easing your worries, calming your nerves, and making everything feel just a little bit better. And on this particular day, you were in dire need of a hug.
You had been feeling down all day, weighed down by stress and anxiety. You tried everything you could think of to shake it off—exercise, deep breathing, meditation, watching TV—but nothing seemed to work. By the time your boyfriend came home, you were on the verge of tears.
Without even needing to say anything, he knew exactly what you needed. He wrapped his arms around you, holding you close and tight while rocking from side to side. You buried your face in his chest, feeling the safety and security of his embrace.
The two of you stood there for what felt like hours, just holding each other. You could practically feel your worries melting away, replaced by a sense of calm and warmth. You breathed in his scent, something you could find comfort in even in the darkest times. Standing there, you felt like everything was going to be okay.
As you two pulled away, you looked up at him with a smile. "Thank you; I don’t even know why I started crying." You smiled a little. "But thank you for being there to hug me; I don't know what I'd do without you."
He tilted his head back and let out a laugh before looking back at you and pulling you back in for another hug. "Anytime," he said. "You know I'm always here for you with open arms."
