Something fundamental to how I write Míriel is that, to develop Arachne parallels and also because Feanor seems to get a lot from her, she has insane levels of hubris. Like Feanor, the hubris is justified because she is indeed just that good, but also her god instead of getting jealous praises her and is devoted to her to the point where the oaths they swear to each other are basically a marriage.

Like how do you even stand up to that. If anyone else ever tries to say they're the elf most talented at weaving/sewing/embroidery/etc. Míriel can just pop up and go "Ok but did the god of our craft propose to you? No? I didn't think so."

Vairë huffed in frustration, for she was unable to see a thing because of the thick strip of cloth covering her eyes. Námo was insistent on her wearing it. It was all for a surprise, he declared, and it was all for her. She waited and waited, brimming with impatience and eager to see what her husband had in store for her. Námo did not keep her waiting for much longer. After having escorted her to her weaving room, he removed her blindfold and gestured to two mannequins with an elaborate flourish of his hands.

“Ta da!” He cried, both satisfied with what he had created with his own skill, and terrified by his wife’s possible reaction. Vairë was more skilled at her craft than he was, and yet, he hoped his offering would please her all the same.

“I knitted them myself,” Námo continued, wringing his hands. “Whenever I had free time between trials. Do you like them?”

Vairë studied the mannequins intensely, but more importantly, what was on them. Woolen sweaters graced their wooden forms, all too colorful and more than a little uneven around the sleeves and the collar and the bottom. Ugly sweaters, some would call them, but in Vairë’s eyes, they were the most beautiful things she had ever beheld.

He made it with his own hands, she thought to herself. While at work, and probably for weeks on end.

“They are beautiful,” she murmured, and she stepped forward to caress the sweater meant for her. The wool was soft, and there was no denying the love and dedication that had been poured into their making. It touched her in a way she did not think possible. “Perhaps we could wear these when we take photos for our Christmas cards?”

Námo flushed, and a rare grin spread across his face.

"Candles? In your workshop?" 

Námo quizzically eyed the wide selection of candles his wife had placed on every available surface. 

"Only for tonight and because I prefer them over fireworks," Vairë explained and put down her tools, her many arms resting for once. 

She took Námo's hand. "I know your mind is already on the future you dread, but let us take a moment to reminisce."

"Of what? Another year of death and destruction?" 

"Of the good times we had, our smiles, our laughs," Vairë hissed his forehead, and his stern mien softened. "And then, we allow ourselves to hope."

Festivals of the Valar in Valinor part two

Part one: Manwë, Varda, Aulë and Yavanna

Each of the Valar do indeed have some festival, ceremony or tradition dedicated to them however not all of them are active participants in theirs. Details vary from culture to culture and by location

As always please feel free to ask more! I included some specific cultures and their traditions but I did not include all yet! And these are just the big ceremonies, not all traditions which I want to go into later!

The Fëanturi plus Estë and Vairë

Námo has no official feasts or celebrations. Most traditions and events surrounding him are conducted only by his followers and within some level of secrecy. As I mentioned on a previous post, small gestures (the lighting of a candle, the lowering of hoods, the humming of certain tunes) is most of how the Doomsman is paid tribute.

There are feasts held for Námo and Vairë among those who particularly worship him, typically conducted in small glades in the dark of the woods of Taniquetil and the surrounding mountains. Trees draped with black silk to allow for a gloomy atmosphere where special lanterns that project images of light over the fabric are hung.

I’ll discuss Námo in human traditions in another post!

There is a ceremony held for Nienna biannually starting after the Darkening. Attendees are mostly Vanyar with some Noldor and a small number of Teleri. Dress is typically dark deep blue satin robes with hoods. It is an occasion of comfort and consolation

Prior to the Darkening it was only the students and followers of Nienna who participated in smaller ceremonies for her, usually in her halls and gardens

As said in part one, the devotees of both Nienna and Yavanna hold a yearly day of Mourning for the two trees of Valinor.

Vairë leaves the halls even more rarely than Námo does. She has several traditions among her students where particularly beautiful or important tapestry is showcased and memories or histories exchanged. Throughout weavers and textile artists in Aman, yearly celebrations are held in honor of Vairë where tapestries or quilts are made in groups with each person contributing a different piece.

Irmo enjoys celebrations! Though his typical form and countenance can be unsettling, even dangerous to elves, he very much likes to spend time among them. He has a slightly larger number of devotees in Valinor than the other Fëanturi and Estë has a number of students though who mostly learn from her Maiar rather than from her.

There is a feast in Lórien held occasionally and without a patterned schedule. Attendees will wind their way through the mazes to join Irmo and his Maiar in a secluded area where the soft scent of flowers is itself hypnotic. These celebrations are not without risks. One or more guests are likely to fall into states of vivid dreams of hallucinations and many intentionally invoke altered states under the guidance of the Maiar.

Estë has no large celebrations and like Námo, most of her traditions are conducted only among her students and followers. There are occasional small events where offerings of herbal plants are brought to Lórien though these are arranged by the Vanyar and Teleri and not by Estë herself

only in villain aus. he's not one to speak, and do you know what that means? he goes absolutely batshit when he's in his villain arc. maniacal laughter is more like it. like a barking, howling, unsettling thing that'll chill you to your bones

Nessa

in normal canonverse, she's a bit of a meme and she learnt it purely for that cause. gives melkor a run for his money with her "morgoth impression"

Aulë

he has heard mairon giving off too many sinister giggles and bursts of random laughters when he thought no one was looking. he knows what to do

Yavanna

she literally threatened to beat up aulë's kids. you can't tell me she wasn't kinda laughing when she did that

Irmo

I think we all know irmo is the furthest thing from sane. let's just hope he doesn't lose it entirely — his laugh might just challenge námo's in his villain arc

Oromë

not really a good villain laugh but everyone who knows oromë knows he always seems like he has a stick up his ass — so the fact that he laughs in general is probs a bit unnervin

Vairë

witch wife okay? she might be quiet but when she does it'll be pretty scary. only ranking her this low because she just gives dark chuckles

Estë

in general, eh, she's not that bad. it does seem a bit forced though. unless it's a villain au, she'd be just below irmo

Vána

learnt from yavanna tbh, still not that great

Varda

she's a bit too good for that. I feel like she might have a chance in a villain au. also it just reminds her of melkor so she's like eugh

Tulkas

his laughter is always so happy sounding, even when it's intimidating. so evil laughter is definitely not his strong suit, even in villain aus

Manwë

he tries okay. I feel like he's quite unnerving in villain aus and doesn't burst into random fits of laughter because of the whole 'nice' façade. but he could. he just prefers not to
