Elven word of the day, 128/?
kurwē from primitive elvish
Meaning “skill of hand, power, ability”
It was from this word that curwë in Quenya and Curu in Sindarin derived
Note: primitive Elvish was the language developed and spoken at Cuiviénen. It is from this that other elven languages developed and their roots can be traced back

8, 15, and 17 from the sensory ask game for Morwen?
From this headcanon ask game here! Still accepting them!
8. Their favorite scents
Pine and other conifers especially in colder weather, clean wool, certain indescribable scents she associates with her loved ones. I should note that Morwen rarely thinks of things as favorites. If you asked her these she would likely find the question pointless
15. A sound they can’t stand
Any discord or cacophony, fire and wind
17. What their voice sounds like
Oh I have many thoughts about this!!
-Morwen’s voice is relatively low and is lower when she speaks in Hadorian Taliska than in Sindarin or Bëorian Taliska. Her tone tends to be quiet, reserved and unwavering. She has absolutely no need to raise her voice to get a point across. When she is angry or passionate she sounds cold and clear. Morwen tends to be somewhat monotone and this hides certain traces of her native accent though they still come across.

Elven word of the day, 127/?
cantië from Quenya
Meaning: pattern
See also: canta meaning “shape, framework”
Note: canta is also the cardinal number four in Quenya
Second note: cannas is a similar Sindarin word meaning “abstract shape”. Both derive from the primitive elvish kat meaning shape or form

For the sensory hc asks!
12, 7, and 15 for Aerin?
And 12, 16, and -7 for Barahir if you’d like a second ask? 🥰
From this ask game here! Still accepting them
I'm so sorry for the world building ramble!! Also let it be known I originally read Barahir as Baragund (this is what happens when you are so Morwen centric...then I had to quickly save those ideas and write new ones for the actually correct character!)
Barahir
7. What they smell like
I have a headcanon that the Bëorians made strong alcohols and that Barahir and Emeldir experimented with recipes before Beren was born. During this time he often smelled like juniper berries and bark and hay from their sheep. He smells of the earth and the fur of the elven horse he rode for some time
After the Bragollach he smells of mud and Heather and sometimes infection when he’s been helping with the wounded
12. Their feelings on physical touch
Oh this gets into a lot of thoughts I have on customs and norms around physical affection between the different Edain cultures. Obviously there will be variations just like in any group these are just some thoughts on customs
The Hadorians are probably the most open with physical affection and contact. Physical work is also highly valued among them and these two points are connected. The Drúedain also value physical affection in similar ways .
Among the Haladin, physical affection is freely given but mostly private and contained, for example In households and families, among members of a scouting group who have built up trust and intimacy over years of work together, etc. Touch in public is not considered wrong or taboo, it’s just not very usual. Physical affection is seen as something important to share and public spaces may distract from it. The Bëorians are similar to the Haladin though public displays of touch and affection are somewhat more common, especially in ceremonial settings.
Barahir is affectionate with others but is highly aware of setting and circumstance. He is more prone to brief but sincere gestures, clasping someone’s shoulder or hand, kisses on the cheek, that sort of thing
16. A sound that makes them sad
His dreams of Finrod’s songs, the laughter of his people’s children (it makes him happy but he fears it will not last), the cries of the vultures in the alders though of course, he has no idea
Aerin
Putting under a cut for discussion of abuse and trauma (though I included pre Nírnaeth and such HCs too)
7. What they smell like
Horses, lilac, warmth, various grasses, occasionally clay
Post Nírnaeth she mostly smells like lye soap and occasionally the herbs Morwen gives her sewn into her sleeves (I know I talk about that a lot but it’s a very important HC to me)
12. Their feelings on physical touch
Pre Nírnaeth Aerin was very openly affectionate with others! One of her favorite feelings is being relaxed or falling asleep next to or cuddling with a loved one
Post Nírnaeth it’s complicated.
The physical and sexual abuse she endures as well as the isolation from her loved ones and community has a profound impact on her relationship with physical touch and affection. There are times that even gentle or supportive touch feels unsafe, either because it reminds her of the abuse or because she has seen people suffer for showing her kindness.
But she is also extremely lonely and often feels desperate for physical affection in the ways she remembers from before. The contradiction and so many factors make everything feel even more confusing.
It worries her sometimes, how she responds to touch that doesn’t hurt or frighten her.
15. A sound they can’t stand
Pre Nírnaeth mundanity: any sounds that indicate issues with horses, the creak of wooden fences after rain which indicates that they did Not survive, unexpected thunderstorms (she’s not afraid of them but the chaos that can occur never bodes well)
Otherwise, Brodda’s voice, her own voice when she speaks to him, the frightened, subservient voice her kin must use when they speak to the incomers and sometimes, to her, the sounds of revelry that used to make her excited and happy but now make her almost numb with dread, the cries of the children she cannot comfort…there is so much
Going by the description of Brodda’s festivities in BoLT tbh it sounds awful
I love Aerin so much thank you. I hope this is ok! I wrote it while very sleepy

hello! I had a quick question about alternative words/homonyms in Sindarin? I was looking through A gateway to sindarin and I found that the word "dust" translates to "ast" but according to some sources, it can also relate to "sun"? am I reading an outdated book?
You’re right! Ast, meaning heat of the sun, is from Noldorin* and is no longer considered part of the “true” Sindarin lexicon
Interestingly, ast meaning dust is also from Noldorin and is not considered true Sindarin.
The “dust” in Anfauglith (gasping dust or choking dust) comes from glith meaning ash
Lith is also a word for sand that also translates to dust in some longer words and phrases
Currently there is a neologism for dusty created by linguist and Tolkien fan Paul Stack. Athren. This is based on the Noldorin ast as well as other early and proto Sindarin words however this is obviously not considered canon
*not Noldorin Quenya, Noldorin as in the early Sindarin language used by the Noldor in earlier drafts
I hope this helps, anon! Sorry if it makes things more confusing

Beleriand springtime headcanons
Last year’s: elves, humans
This is just a random little collection of thoughts! More about each group can be found through their tags! Please feel free to ask for locations or cultures and I’ll write some spring headcanons for them!
Beleriand is full of old growth forests and in the springtime, the forest floors are blanketed in crocus, bluebells, snowdrops, wild garlic. Common meadowfoam, globe thistle, lavender and buttercup grow in spring in Nevrast, parts of Ossiriand and other milder regions of Beleriand.
In the region of Nargothrond, the tending of the orchards starts in early spring though they are maintained throughout the year. Although apples and pears will not grow until later, the trees begin to bloom early and the spring festival in Nargothrond is harkened by crowns of apple blossoms, sugared pansies on soft breads and games in the orchards and over the Talath Dirnen. Indeed although some sugar is traded for from over the Ered Luin, some is made from apple. I have a lot of thoughts about the Telerin influences in Nargothrond’s culture (more in the Nargothrond tag!) and this is part of it!
In several Avarin cultures, primarily in southern Beleriand, the word for spring is related to the words for sound or renewal of sound. This refers to the music of returning birds, awakening frogs, spring rain and wind storms, and melting creeks that often accompany the return of spring
In Dorthonion, a ceremony is held in the early spring to commemorate the people and animals who died in the winter. This is usually held around the time that the spring births of their goats, sheep, alpacas and rabbits occur. The Bëorian tradition dates back to their journey over the Ered Luin and was lost after the Bragollach when such a devastating number of people and nearly all animals died and the displaced survivors did not have the means or access to the old locations to continue the tradition.
The Falathrim chart seasonal changes (among other things) by the stars, even before the rising of the sun and moon. They have some of the most detailed calendars of elven peoples in Beleriand during the first age.
Frogs especially tree frogs represent spring for the green elves of Ossiriand and elsewhere in Eastern Beleriand.
The Sindar of Hithlum and Nevrast harvest magnolia blossoms in the spring and use them in teas and seasonings as well as in traditional medicine. These customs were taught to the folk of Marach and maintained for many years after.

Anon who asked about post Nírnaeth Hithlum: thank you so much for the ask! I definitely have lots of thoughts on this, some of it is in my tags but I’ll definitely put together another collection of HCs!

Hi, for the character ask, can you do Niënor?
Second ask: Sorry, I forgot to put the numbers in my ask so I send you another one. For the character ask, can you do 1, 4 and 7 for Niënor please?
Super late I’m so sorry!!
1. I know it’s not super unique but I mean I absolutely adore her confrontation with Glaurung. I've especially enjoyed analyzing how that scene has changed throuhout the various drafts!
@daegred-winsterhand and I had a conversation about how realistically you can see how both Húrin and Morwen are reflected in their children and I love this in Niënor. I love how she is like Morwen and I also love how she is her own person.
7. Something the fandom does that you enjoy
I think @matrose started it but I absolutely love the idea that Niënor’s hair goes paler or white after her encounter with Glaurung
I also love @elwing’s Niënor thoughts always.

hey friend i just think that maybe #9 (a scent that makes them nostalgic) for aerin, if you would?? .w. ?? <3
~ @nelyoslegalteam, still unable to send asks from side
From this ask game here!
I answered a similar ask here! There’s some overlap with it! I hope that’s ok! Feel free to send any others!
cw: implied abuse and slavery
The smells that come with the seasons changing naturally. Post Nírnaeth, everything is different. What she is allowed to eat, wear, hold, do, so many aspects of her life are torn apart or changed but even as they are, the world keeps going. the lilac and clover bloom in the spring even when she is forbidden from running through the fields, the scent of larch wood used in the winters to light the hearth is the same, even when she sits among cruel strangers beside it, until they are no longer strangers*, the wool of the sheep during the shearing, even when the souls who work it are nearly as battered and exhausted as she is, even when each year she watches one of the herders fall and not rise again
Thank you for always listening to my Aerin thoughts!!
*I know I’ve talked about this too many times and how it’s worse but I wanted to mention again

The Echoriath or Encircling Mountains, the mountains around Gondolin which were home to the roosts of the great eagles. One of the early names for Gondolin meant flower or lily of the valley so I chose that for the center
Mountains of Mithrim, Ered Engrin, Ered Luin, Ered Gorgoroth, Ered Wethrin

Could I request Morwen for the drawing prompts? Or anything Narn related? Totally ok if not!

by all means! prompts are like chew toys for my brain, and it forces me out of my comfort zone and to try new things/characters/concepts ❤️

For the sensory hcs - 6, 14, 17 for maedhros? 👀
From this ask game here
6. Favorite food or flavors?
In Valinor Maedhros’s favorite flavors are savory and salty ones. Fresh bread with salted herbs and olive oil, the meat served at certain ceremonies with the spices burnt from the fire…
At the March, much of his view of food is utilitarian. What is warm and filling and accessible. I’ve written way too much about the effects of Angband on food but I think it loses a lot of its pleasure and enjoyment for Maedhros in the aftermath
I do think he still favors the more savory though
14. A sound they can’t stand
Cacophonous noise agitates him. Throughout Angband, the sounds of the forges, of shifting rock in the mines, the sounds of creatures natural and not, scraping steel, of screams and laughter and commands, of the thousands of processes that go into the running of a fortress on that scale…
And then there is the rushing wind, the call of birds, distant shouting….
There is little that truly mimics that outside the walls of Angband but scatterings of those sounds put Maedhros on edge.
17. What their voice sounds like
I struggle with this as I do not know or understand any of the words to describe voice but I imagine it as fairly even, confident and measured. Post Angband his voice takes a lower, harsher tone, the results of the severe strain on his chest and lungs upon Thangorodrim, years of misuse and disuse, and the exposure to the multitude of harmful substances and conditions within Angband and the Ered Engrin.
He still commands a room or army of course, but the changes to his voice are still stark to those who knew him before.
I hope this is ok, anon! I realized too late that 14 was actually about music, let me know if you want me to come back to that one

morwen 1 13 22.... aerin 8 3 5
From this character ask game here!
1. Most visually striking feature
I’ll go with the canon answer because I find it so compelling! Definitely Morwen’s eyes! I will make a collage one day of all the relevant quotes. The light in them hard to endure…
She is in general though a rather striking person. Morwen has an intensity to her demeanor and gaze that people tend to have an er…visceral…reaction to.
13. Their ideal climate and weather
Not Hithlum. Morwen dislikes humidity. She prefers drier weather and climate. Dorthonion has a markedly different climate than Hithlum and one Morwen greatly preferred. She likes cooler weather. Early to mid autumn is probably ideal temperature.
22. Are they good at sensing the thoughts and emotions of others? How do they experience them?
Oh I need an entire separate post for this! In short, Not usually. Morwen often considers the emotions of others, and herself, to be a hindrance. When she identifies them or understands them, she still doesn’t always consider them.
I think she is a very observant person even if she isn’t particularly emotionally attuned (? Unsure of word?). Morwen certainly notices changes in others, in their demeanor or features.
I remember this line here about her, trying to read Túrin’s face like a riddle.
She tends to experience them quietly. She’s not good at emotional language or discussion and strongly dislikes it. She’s certainly aware that people are often driven by emotion and she doesn’t necessarily discount this, but she doesn’t like it. It’s vital to explain though that she shares this sentiment as much if not more towards her own emotions. For Morwen was stern with others as with herself etc etc
Anyways I feel I am thoroughly failing at explaining what I mean for which I apologize:(
Aerin
3. Favorite view
Aerin’s favorite view are the expanse of fields and streams from the surroundings of the home she grew up in. She also loved the view of Dor-lómin from upon Amon Darthir where she rode several times as a teenager.
5. Do they prefer enclosed or wide open spaces
Definitely open! Aerin grew up riding and traveling with her family’s horses and thus very active. I’ve talked about this before but the restrictions of her literal space and movement is one of the worst parts of her captivity and the hardest to adjust to.
She’s often further confined as punishment for her disobedience, especially in the first few years.
8. Their favorite scents
Clean horse fur, grass after rain in the summer, the smell of blankets or clothes warmed by the sun, rosemary, lilac (but post Nírnaeth it makes her sad, or even bitter), sweet hay
Thank you @welcomingdisaster I love them
