Not Without Maedhros

Thinking about a Fingon fic set in Mandos where Fingon is ready for reembodiment but won't leave the halls without Maedhros. Never mind the fact that he hasn't actually seen Maedhros's spirit yet...

The only way he can tell the passage of time is the influx of spirits into the Halls, the halls get larger to accommodate them all. Surely Maedhros is around here somewhere.

It's about Fingon being asked if he's consider Life again and he says he has, but he'd like to wait for Maedhros first. He does not want to leave without Maedhros.

More spirits enter and he waits.

When asked again he is indeed ready for Life but it is disturbing to him that it as taken this long for Maedhros to find him. So he reaffirms that he is waiting, he will not leave without Maedhros.

Spirits come and some start to leave.

The asking stops, and in its place he is told: "it is to leave these halls", "you have lingered long enough", "you can feel the yearning for Life in you, go on, it's time to go". He always says the same: Not without Maedhros, not withouth Maedhros, not without Maedhros.

It seems impossible, but the population of the Halls actually seems to decrease.

And yet he waits. He waits until all of his family has walked out of those great, beckoning doors. He waits as his fellow spirits dwindle around him.

He waits, until he is alone in the vast, silent halls.

An incomplete list of Namo Mandos' metaphorical headaches:

Fëanor (no comment needed, only how on Arda can he think Mandos is putting up with him because he wants to and wouldn't throw him out if he actually was ready to leave. Doesn't help that he's actively trying to get thrown out)

The sons of Fëanor (aside from Maedhros; can't you all follow his example and actually be repentant of, you know, mass murders??)

For that matter, unrepentant followers of Maedhros, who don't care that Maedhros himself has decided they were all in the wrong

Eöl & Aredhel

Finrod (no, listen - Finrod is good and (mostly) courteous, but he's tried to wheedle out what the fate of Men is from him on ten separate occasions and is a general troublemaker. At least he didn't stay long)

The rest of the house of Finwë. There isn't an untroublesome soul among them, which is living proof that Elros is line of Lúthien. Some of his descendants though...

Númenoreans who think they can shout the Lord of the Dead into submission, demand that he give them more life, and haven't been told "no" since that one nanny when they were three who was subsequently discharged

Númenoreans who rail at him for the injustice of the universe which allows "lesser men" to take up arms against slavers and doesn't he know how unfair it is to rob someone of their life like that

Dagor Dagorath has never been more chaotic.

I have a new au idea! I like the canon Dagor Dagorath trio, but I feel like these three dumpster fires would be soo fricking funny in their position.

A man, an elf and a maia. Will they save or doom the universe forever? :D

Some info for the pics:

1. Character sheet and some more information. (Sauron, Maedhros and Túrin, I forgot to write their names onto the sheet.)

2. After Námo announces the new prophecy.

3. Sauron heals Maedhros scars. (That he gave him back then, of course. Dramatic aholes.)

4. Their whole adventure consist of searching for silmarils (again, yeah) for Fëanor to break them to renew the Trees, preventing the total annihilation of every soul, fëa and ëala on Arda. Aaand fleeing from Melkor's forces, of course. They're not in warrior shape. :D

It'd be impossible to adapt the entire Silmarillion into a single ballet, but I think this is the closest you can get to reducing the plot to its bare minimum. more details below!

So about Satine and Mandalorian customs...

She's mourning a dying enemy who just bombed a public place and killed/injured several people (and could have killed/injured her), and she's comforting him in his own language too. I can think of maybe one other Mandalorian who'd do something like that and it's Sabine (with a name that sounds like Satine, who's friends with the Jedi like Satine was).

Because unlike Bo-Katan "you're not Mandalorian" Kryze, Pre "that woman tarnishes the very name Mandalorian" Vizsla, Din "you're not Mandalorian" Djarin, Gar "fuck everybody who isn't me" Saxon, Paz "fate has brought this blade back to my clan, and now fate will end yours" Vizsla and her ladyship "then, you are a Mandalorian no more" the Armorer, and all the rest of the warriors, Satine actually cares about ALL the Mandalorians.

Not just the ones who agree with her, not just the ones who accept her authority and not just the ones who follow one and only one 'way.'

That doesn't mean she's ready to just let them run amok and do whatever they want (hence making Concordia its own province for the warriors, hence banning weapons for outsiders in the cities, hence calling rogue anybody who'd try to pull Mandalore into the war) but she freaking cares. She NEVER takes arms against another Mando or wishes harm on them, even as the traditionalists spend decades bombing their own people, fighting their own clans or houses for leadership, staging fake terrorist threats and putting people in danger, putting Sith or the Empire in power and then fighting those, and scorning any Mando not doing the same, all while professing to do that out of love for their people.

She actually cares, about ALL of them.

Thinking about how Feanor will be held in Mandos until the end of the world. I've always been like "haha Feanor's in timeout forever, he's so awful that he will not be allowed to leave Mandos ever. haha!" But what if, what if it's less of a punishment and more of a mercy, letting Feanor take the time he needs to heal.

No one is expecting him to come out any time soon, so there's no rush, no pressure for him to be better than he is right now. Let him heal at his own pace.

Anyway I'm feeling emotional over Namo being so astronomically merciful.

A thought about the Halls of Mandos. What is finrod famous for, above anything else? His friendships with and love for mortals. What kind of love must that cultivate, by necessity? A love that can let go. A spirit that can give up the old and welcome the new.

What was Fëanor’s fatal flaw? Same as Anakin’s: he can’t let go. Of his mother, of his father, of his resentments, of his children. He cannot bear to lose anybody. And Fingolfin cannot bear to lose Fëanor.

Anyway the halls of Mandos are a literal rebirth, a letting-go: one must be willing to give up all one’s old scars, all one’s old hurts, the map that life has left on your body, the resentments that war has left on your spirit, and that is why Finrod was able to shed his old skin and don the new, and why Fëanor will wait in the Halls until the breaking of the world.
