As usual three songs for three stories/characters/themes below.

First song up is for Abigail Emmet, the mother of Mario, and just as much as a terrifying alien soul-and-meat-eating shapeshifter as he is. She's been around for a while, even hitching with the Van der Linde Gang as the third founding (adult) member, sticking with it until she and Molly got the hell out of there after witnessing the effect Hosea's death had on Dutch and Micah being a rat. Saddening that Abigail outlived Molly (given her alien origins), but she never once stopped thinking fondly about the O'Shea poet, even when raising Mario. This song absolutely details her longing for Molly, while also letting go for the sake of Mario.

Next up, a song for Silva's Hope and maybe a bit of Old Dusk, the two main stories for Silva in Far Cry The Silver Chronicles. I think it just fits the religious themes found in the fics' and the game, but also twisting it to reveal the darker and lighter aspects that not only come off as seductive but reveal what's exactly underneath the surface of the Voice's Prophecy and the Collapse, and whether it's better to choose the safer path and obey the prophecy while risking loss of identity and restricted by extremely controlling expectations that are unrealistic or take the risk and step out of the status quo for the sake of having the freedom to choose and to defy a fate other's push onto themselves and their neighbors, all the while having to contend with the possibility of being lost in the unknown.

And finally something for the antagonists. Ranging from the charming yet arrogant Edward Carmine to the callous and controlling Zachariah from The UnTitledverse. From the hypocritical monster that is Father Adam Omar to the fatalistic pessimism that fuels Paul Yellowjack's miserable self-loathing in Far Cry The Silver Chronicles. From the Court King who wants to conquer his worlds back, to the Director of the Midnight Rise, Sir Enigma Malvolio, who brings despair wherever his expeditions take him throughout Life, Despair & Monsters. From the well-meaning extremist Xiang Ba'al to the Mad God of Carnage himself, Discord in the originals works that will diverge from Wings And Horns. There are many more of interest, but the list is as tall as the rest of my original characters. But one commonality can be found with these characters... a question that evades an answer... will they ever be satisfied after reaching their goals? Or... will they go further until they've crashed and burned?

ALSO! TW: There is brief mention of suicidal idealization in one verse with probably more mature themes hidden in the lyrics. Just putting it out there to be weary listening and reading.

Since they’re all Gundham, they all think that they’re the only one for Kazuichi, so I expect they’d fight a lot. Like, a lot a lot. To the point Sonia, Fuyuhiko and Hajime can’t take it anymore and they just corner Kaz to just pick one! But he doesn’t wanna cause he’s still fighting the “I’m not gay or bi its just guys are hot and maybe I wanna kiss them once” struggle ™️ so he’s dragging his feet but also scared of commitment because commitment is what made his mom vanish from his life.

But I can see Remnant Gundham just straight abducting him in the middle of the night and making him see all the benefits of choosing him, which makes the other two get in on and it devolves into a sorta orgy sort of train situation. They’d approach it about the same with slight variations:

I can completely see Kazuichi being so at their mercy - especially Remnant Gundham who in my headcanon is more hedonistic as his entropy and misanthropy is ramped to an 11, so he takes great liberties with Kazuichi’s body. His favorite position would definitely be one that keeps Kazuichi at his utter mercy - wet and gaping and incapable of doing anything on his own.

Hope’s Peak/Despair Arc Gundham is almost like our current avatar, but I’d say way mor socially inept if that’s possible? Way more a self proclaimed antagonist. Def thinks he’s the Kaiba to Kaz’s Joey or his Sasuake to his Naruto. He would be the softest at first, but gets demanding as they keep going. Kaz never disagrees anyway he’s too Simp to do so lol

Avatar Gundham I’m gonna say, is going to be a mix of these; after all, his NWP avatar was created with his previous personality from his school days. My headcanon for the whole NWP gang, is that the avatars are a mix of past and present, which would result in some minor (or major) shifts in personalities, habits and overall reactions to different situations. An organic consequence to removing the Enoshima brainwashing.

So Avatar Gundham would be a combination of both: sweet but wickedly cruel with his paramours comfort in mind! All three would def be into some form of BDSM and giving Kazuichi explicit instructions to follow. It also benefits Kazuichi, since canonically he has a thing for humiliation and orders; the real struggle would be to get him to stop begging, but they’d probably love that lol

In the end, he still can’t choose but hey, his dumbassery is endearing to them for some reason and the other two get sent back so it works out somehow!

of course that’s until the same glitch results in three Kazuichi’s but that’s a later problem.

Year of the Bat - Number 29

Welcome to Year of the Bat! In honor of Kevin Conroy, Arleen Sorkin, and Richard Moll, I’m counting down my Top 31 Favorite Episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” throughout this January. EPISODE QUOTE: “The final stunt IS the best.” Number 29 is…The Ultimate Thrill.

This is widely regarded as the most…um… “suggestive” episode in “Batman: The Animated Series.” While the show was not above a few innuendos and implications here and there, they were usually pretty subtle. This episode, rather infamously, basically turns any undertones into overtones: subtlety is not part of the game. You can decide if that specific element is a good or a bad thing, but it certainly makes it memorable. Regardless, that’s NOT the real reason I love this story. “The Ultimate Thrill” focuses on the exploits of a character named Roxy Rocket: an original villainess created for the DCAU. She actually got her start in some spin-off comics for the franchise; the creators enjoyed the concept of the character so much, they finally gave her an animated outing with this story. The basic plot is pretty simple: Roxy teams-up with the Penguin, stealing jewelry for him while he acts as the fence, paying her for her work and then pawning off the baubles to the highest bidder. Penguin gets fed up with Roxy’s overzealous thrillseeking, however, and – out of fear she may cause trouble for his business at the Iceberg Lounge – tries to have her assassinated. Batman must now try to capture Roxy, before Penguin’s minions get to her first. It's the two villains who make this story so memorable. In Penguin’s case, this is the only really major story he had in the New Batman Adventures era of the show. He popped up frequently throughout season four, but it was usually as a cameo or just a minor supporting role. In this story, he’s the main villain (not the main ANTAGONIST, but the main VILLAIN; there’s a difference), and I really like the way he’s used here. By this point in the series, Oswald Cobblepot had seemingly reformed and was running a prestigious nightclub called the Iceberg Lounge…but was secretly still a villain, doing his dirty deeds out the back window. It was great to see that character concept in full action here.

Roxy, however, is the one who truly makes this story. Her origins are only described, not shown, but setup for the character is really great: once upon a time, Roxy was a movie stuntperson, and an aspiring actress. However, her stunts became increasingly dangerous, to the point where no one wanted to hire her for fear of either herself or others being hurt in the process. Roxy thus turned to a life of crime, figuring that nothing could be more thrilling than the life of an outlaw. We’ve had other villains who enjoyed the thrill of the chase, so to speak – Catwoman is a good example, for instance – but none quite so…intensely as Roxy Rocket. To say that Roxy is an adrenaline junkie is putting it far too mildly. It’s made pretty darn obvious that she basically “gets off” on thrills; that’s where so much of the more suggestive side of the story comes from.

Even ignoring that specific angle, though, it’s just interesting to see HOW MUCH of a thrillseeker Roxy is. She will do literally ANYTHING, it often seems, just to get some excitement. From very simple things, like mock-gambling, to outright taking pleasure out of the thought of her own possible demise, it seems like she’ll try just about whatever, short of murder, simply for the sake of a little excitement. On that note, yeah, Roxy’s also not really depicted as outright EVIL, but simply a thrillseeking lunatic: in both this episode and her comic appearances from the DCAU, she’s consistently depicted as being much less violent and cruel compared to a lot of other baddies. There are even hints of a sort of self-deluding naivete to Roxy: she describes herself out loud as “the heroine of the story,” and seems legitimately shocked when other characters turn against her. When Penguin tries to kill her, she’s absolutely flabbergasted. When Batman snaps the cuffs on her at one point, she’s genuinely confused why. I love the different layers of this character, and I really wish we could have seen more of her…but you can certainly say that her single appearance (barring a Superman crossover) was a banger. Did I mean it “that way” when I said “banger”? Maybe, maybe not. With Roxy Rocket, neither would be surprising. Ha Ha.

SPIDER-VERSE On The Brain

Massive SPIDER-VERSE *spoilers* are ahead... Do not read on if you haven't seen the movie...

It's been four days since I checked out SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE in theaters... And I'm still processing such a rich layer cake of a movie with all this stuff going on, just the sheer ambition of it... And... This story isn't even over, that's the mind-blowing part...

This movie did have pretty strong arcs for Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and even Peter B. Parker to some extent, in addition to introducing a major conflict and a soon-to-be-primary antagonist in Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099... While a larger threat, The Spot, still looms, and there's even a closer to home threat for Miles himself as the picture wraps up...

There's so much more to go, assuming that BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE is also going to be a pretty long movie. That this movie was, in the planning stages, getting to be so big that they had to break it up into two parts? Who knows what we're in for...

I feel a lot of ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE's narrative brilliance is within its yet to be resolved conflict...

Canon...

Back in 2018, INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE came onto the scene with its dynamic new way of rendering CGI imagery in an animated feature, while throwing in eye-candy flourishes and other dynamic art styles to really make that movie pop amongst other mainstream animated movies *and* the entire comic book movie sphere. In a neat sense, this groundbreaking new way to make an animated feature strengthened the inclusive and quite simple overall message of the story: ANYONE can be Spider-Man.

Now, if INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE said "anyone can be Spider-Man", ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE asks what that "anyone" must go through to be Spider-Man.

Can Spider-Man truly be anyone?

What is "canon"?

Miguel is adamant that every Spider, from man to woman to animal to insect, must experience some major tragedy in order to truly be a Spider-Something. A loss of a family member, close friend, or any kind of loved one... That's that about that, that's the nature of the "Spider-Verse", it is set in stone, no other way! Seems to contradict "Anyone can be Spider-Man", right? Apparently Miles can't have a relatively normal non-costumed life, someone he loves HAS to be axed... And that's the case with... How many Spiders? Over 280?

... which quite frankly sounds very controlling and lacking in imagination. And kinda dumb on paper. Miles knows that, even... It all relates back to what his mother and father want for him vs. his ambitions and desires.

"Nah, imma do my own thing"...

Such a liberating line, during such a literally and figuratively heavy moment in the film...

Between Miles' arc and Gwen's story, this autistic queer right here felt something quite resonant from all of this... I needed to see and hear these classic story tropes pulled off in such a great new way at a crucial time in my life...

Now, this works even beyond one's personal journey and how a film relates to someone: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE seems cleverly critical of contemporary superhero movie culture and most nerd-dom, from its most toxic swamps to its most boring offices. Adherence to "canon", shackling oneself to hard-set rules that mustn't be deviated from. It's especially potent coming from a movie series where the main Spider-Man is a black/Puerto Rican teenager, and his pals include a trans Spider-Woman, an older adult Peter Parker who has a child, and many more.

The insistence that Spider-Man has to be this one thing, i.e. Miguel running a Spider-Society that makes sure all Spider-People have that very "Uncle Ben" tragedy happen to them, with NO ANOMALIES... Miles' whole existence as Spider-Man, of course, is revealed to be said anomaly... In that a spider from another universe, Earth-42, got to his, Earth-1610, and bit him... Messing everything up... He's even blamed for Earth-1610 Peter Parker's death, to add insult to injury!

Or DID he mess things up?

Maybe "canon" is a bunch of bullshit.

The very kind of thing that shackles whole characters and franchises down, instead of letting those who come to the sandbox play with the toys THEIR way. INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE came to CG animation and didn't do the Pixar style, didn't do what most other mainstream animated movies were doing, didn't follow the accepted "standard" or "canon"... A friend of mine, in his review of ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, noted something very interesting: This also ties into how a lot of very online animation fans insist that every new movie now must be like SPIDER-VERSE. And like PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH. And like any other animated movie that they consider "top tier" or "based" or "cinema". Including a relatively-panned Mario movie. Screw off if you're Pixar making "mid" movies like TURNING RED and ELEMENTAL, or Disney Animation making equally "mid" movies like ENCANTO or RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON... "Canon" in feature animation, apparently, is now movies that must be like SPIDER-VERSE or PUSS IN BOOTS or whatever. Animated movie "requirements". You have to have scary dark villains, you have to have the most amazing unseen animation style ever, you have to do it all THIS WAY...

This whole "canon" nonsense also ties into superhero movies in general, as well. Even comics, like a lot of runs of Spider-Man are apparently doing... especially in a time of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC movie-verse being clamped down by such hard continuity... That has only morphed into a bigger cluster-cuss, post-SPIDER-VERSE.

I remember when watching the LOKI Disney+ series, thinking... This series is trying to explain in FIVE 40-MINUTE EPISODES something INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE effortlessly explained in less than 5 MINUTES... Then you bring in the Doctor Strange follow-ups, all this stuff about "incursions". Incursions this, Sacred Timelines that... Why is this so goddamn convoluted and wracked head-to-toe with all these RULES? Other multiverse stories don't do this, and Marvel's characters span DECADES... And a big criticism of the recent MCU output is that the continuity, the canon... Doesn't allow for the characters to have their own unique stories, told by filmmakers with individual unique visions working within reasonable guidelines. I feel these two movies, along with EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, show what a multiverse story can still be in this day and age.

And by using Miguel's rule, ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE goes right for the jugular bearing its spider-fangs.

Anyone can be Spider-Man, Spider-Man can have ANY life.

May I also add? The Spot... He's not in the movie much, but his arc... Tying this back to the worst of toxic nerd culture. The Spot is shook by being called some villain of the week and everything else that happened to him (like getting conked by the very bagel from the first movie), and instead of using his weird abilities for something good, he's going to go great lengths to prove that he is not some villain of the week. To become a larger scale threat... And for what? To fill a literal hole in himself? What validity and happiness will this bring him? I see something similar in some aspects of nerd culture, where they take being wronged (I'll humorously compare this to being shoved into lockers, circa 1988) at some point in their life, and turning it into their literal villain origin story... Growing up to be the jocks that bullied them, growing up to be the ones making life harder for other people in the community... The very people complaining about how "w0ke" this movie is for having "forced diversity", the very people who also lob that stolen word at harmless things like the LITTLE MERMAID remake and virtually anything "W0ke Disney" puts out these days, the very people who had literal shit-fits over MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, every new STAR WARS movie, GHOSTBUSTERS 2016, SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER, new MUPPET BABIES, any new STAR TREK media, the list goes on and on... That's The Spot. Funny how some superhero movies, even animated superhero movies, have these villains who feel like they've been wronged and feel like they're entitled to something...

Just more texture to this ludicrously-textured layer cake movie... Yeah, CAKE itself is a big part of the movie, too. Look at that-

All this, amidst a backdrop of hundreds of Spider-People, a surrealistic smorgasbord of visual styles and animation techniques (Spider-Punk alone, YOWZA YOWZA YOWZA!), a multiverse-spanning story, and at the end... All of it tying back to who Miles Morales wants to be. How he wants to tell HIS story... When he defies Miguel on the train, it's a monumental moment...

And the story isn't even over yet... This movie is something special.

Can I rq the heartlabyul fellas with a very.... Scary s/o. Like y/n came straight out of a horror movie, sadako from the ring/kayako from ju-on vibes. It also doesn't help that their s/o does stuff that can be considered odd the the majority, like climbing in vents, hiding under beds and tables, popping up out of nowhere when you look away for a second, being able to twist and bend their body into weird and almost impossible ways, stuff that you would imagine a supernatural horror movie antagonist would do, y/n does that on the regular while being COMPLETELY oblivious to how scary they are. - the burning kingdoms trilogy by tasha suri (last book comes out this nov). two women protagonists who are both Kind Of Fucked Up and neither makes great choices most of the time, both driven by revenge. another woman who also is Kind Of Fucked Up also plays a major recurring role and has her own PoV chapters throughout. it’s not on the level of the traitor baru in terms of writing style, mostly just in themes, but if you liked that i think you’ll enjoy these books!

- she who became the sun by shelley parker-chan: SOOOO good, gave me brainworms. it’s sold as “mulan meets song of achilles” but that’s extremely broad and doesn’t get to the true heart of it, which is an exploration of gender and fighting to be recognized as more than/better than “just a girl/woman”. (unfortunately the sequel to this kind of sucks imo!) the first is much more focused on the women/lesbians with a side of tortured self-hating gay men as the parallel antagonists, and it can stand alone pretty well despite it being a duology.

i hope you’re enjoying your journey so far in focusing on women-centric media!! some friends and i have been doing the same for the past few years altho more specifically focused on books with lesbian characters or relationships, and we’ve def read a few clunkers LOL but it’s been fun overall :^)

Ok it’s been about 2 weeks since the new cast names have gotten revealed and like 3 since we’ve first seen them, I’ve had time to fully process the new designs I think I can give in depth thoughts now.

Priya - um I don’t have much to say about her, she gives off super preppy but very nice, giving Courtney I think. I like her she seems nice

Millie - Yeah she’s just giving nice and polite and mom friend, but she’s absolutely one of my favorites I think idk she’s just nice.

Ripper - Okay he had to grow on me a lot but I love him now! I think the Nowen headcanons/art converted me on him and I don’t even ship lmao. But yeah he’s a bitch I’m calling it now. Maybe not main antagonist worthy but like he’s evil. But also lovely and a joy to have around. Also he’d probably be a challenge beast I think. Idk he’s just vibes I guess.

Damien - Honestly if anyone’s trans it’s him. Definitely. He just exudes transmasc. This entire row is very gender but like out of this whole cast it’s probably him. Also, he’s SO COOL I am in love with his design he also just exudes good vibes I love him. I think he should win I want him to win or at least make top 3.

Axel - YES. She is going to be a favorite I hope another one of the coolest people here. Love characters who could beat my ass. Personality wise I’m think she’s like Brick Courtney and Eva with slight Jo and Duncan idk she just gives all of them. She will slay I can sense it.

I think my absolute favorites are MK, Damien, Axel, Wayne, Nichelle, Julia, Ripper, Zee, Wayne, and Millie. Although I don’t get why these were their names when I’ve seen so many better ones (I’ve seen Tristan and Hayden for Ripper and Wayne respectively and like yeah I like those a hell of a lot better.) But um yeah I’m excited for the season I don’t think it’ll be a dumpster fire, especially considering Ridonculous was good. I’m excited.

Animation Night 165: New Gods

嘿朋友动画的晚上正在上映电影！

One day I'll make a new friend who speaks Chinese and I can ask to come up with a different intro for donghua-related posts ;p

Long time Animation Night viewers might remember Animation Night 102 a little over a year ago, in which we watched a film called 新神榜：哪吒重生 (New Gods: Nezha Reborn) - not to be confused with other recent Nezha-related films like Ne Zha.

And it was pretty sick. Essentially you've got a CGI film set in a kind of FF7-like dieselpunk world in which various mythological figures now run crime syndicates or ride cool motorbikes. The film followed someone who turns out to be the reincarnation of Nezha - where Nezha's old enemy, the East Sea Dragon King, is also reincarnated as a kind of mafia kingpin who doesn't know to leave well enough alone, and picks a fight, hoping to stop the new Nezha fully incarnating.

As CG films go, there's not a lot to compare it to - except perhaps Lupin III: The First, which also has the kind of smooth, slightly stylised figures and fancy effects. It was a bunch of fun, lots of twists and turns, guys who look like Sun Wukong but aren't (...maybe?), betrayals, and of course plenty of slickly choreographed fantastical martial arts.

Well, sure enough, Nezha was the first in a series! The second film in the series, New Gods: Yang Jian came out last year...

This one focuses on another character from the Investiture of the Gods, Erlang Shen (二郎神), who's got a bunch of other names, notably Yang Jian (楊戩), which is the name he takes in Investiture of the Gods. I definitely needed to read up on this guy, so here's a primer: Erlang Shen's a god, nephew to the Jade Emperor, and a rather righteous one, associated with traits like purity, decency, and slaying monsters. Physically, his major trait is the truth-seeing third eye in the middle of his forehead; he also likes to carry a three-pointed spear, and his signature technique is '72 eartly transformations', i.e. turning into pretty much anything.

In Investiture, he shows up as a discple of the immortal Yuding Zhenren (玉鼎真人) during Chapter 40, in which Jiang Ziya battles the four 'Diablo Brothers' Mo Lihong, Mo Liqing, Mo Lihai and Mo Lishou, essentially a bunch of evil wizards who are causing havoc. Now, bear with me here. Mo Lishou has a powerful flying mink (or maybe an elephant). Yang Jian deliberately lets himself get eaten, and then when Lishou sends the mink out to attack, he transforms inside its stomach, popping it from the inside as it's about to fight Jiang Ziya.

Then, Yang Jian transforms himself into the mink, and uses this disguise to get close to the brothers and steal a magic umbrella from Mo Lihong, giving Jiang Ziya the chance to win the battle. Pure TTRPG player strategems here honestly. Love it.

He also shows up in Journey to the West, in which he's sent to try and deal with the Sun Wukong problem. They have a classic transformation battle, which Yang Jian eventually wins by seeing through Sun Wukong's clever disguise as a temple, and teaming up with Laozi (yeah¸ the Tao Te Ching guy) to capture him.

All in all, Yang Jian is not a god to be trifled with.

However, the main story about Erlang Shen/Yang Jian is none of these, but a folktale called The Magic Lotus Lantern, in which he plays the role of antagonist.

The Magic Lotus Lantern tells of the goddess Huayue Sanniang, who falls in love with a mortal scholar called Lui Yanchang. Her older brother Erlang Shen, here a god, does not approve, to the point that he's willing to fight her about it. However, Huayue Sanniang wins the fight using her magic lotus lantern, and marries Liu Yanchang. Together they have a child called Chen Xiang. With me so far?

Unfortunately, Erlang Shen isn't about to take this whole thing lying down. After seven years, he tracks them down by the light of that same lantern, and briefly abducts Chen Xiang, before stealing the lantern and sealing Sanniang under a mountain (Mount Hua).

Nine years later, Chen Xiang - now 16 - learns what happened to his mum. He goes on a journey running into a number of mythological figures, including Sun Wukong, who teaches him martial arts. Indeed, Sun Wukong is like you know what kid you're pretty strong, I'll make you a big old axe to get your mum out of that mountain. At the end of it all, Chen Xiang goes and battles his uncle, and loses... but at the last minute he gets a special lotus lantern powerup, which gives him the chance to win the battle and free his mum from the mountain.

Incidentally, if you will permit a tangent (that is at least animation relevant lmao) - this story was adapted to animation in 1999 as 宝莲灯 (Lotus Lantern), and in fact that's quite a notable film in itself. To briefly tell the story again, from the 50s onwards, the vast majority of animation in China happened under the roof of Shanghai Animation Film Studio. However, during the Cultural Revolution, most of the major animators at SAFS such as Te Wei were cast as reactionaries sent to the countryside to do hard labour, practicing drawing only in secret. Chinese animation entered a period where the only permitted form was propaganda films in a narrowly defined realist style.

Following the end of the Cultural Revolution, many of these animators returned to the studio, making celebrated films like 哪吒闹海 Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979) as well as all sorts of short films celebrating an end to their ordeal and railing against artistic censorship. However, the studio's output - and Chinese animation in general - declined in the ensuing decades, with Chinese studios mostly doing outsourcing work and younger audiences turning to anime and western animation. So far so familiar.

In 1992, the studio started to reorganise itself along Western lines, collaborating with a company called Prrfect Animation from San Francisco. [This information comes from an article in Animation World Network, which is incredibly light on details. I can't find any other mention of Prrfect Animation outside of its connection with SAFS.] The studio would soon become part of the new Shanghai Film Group Corporation.

And in the middle of that period comes this movie - a kind of turning point for donghua. You can a restoration on Youtube, albeit unsubbed. Visually it's definitely got traces of the Cultural Revolution-era style, narratively it hews fairly close to the Mouse's formula complete with songs; indeed, allegedly this movie beat them at their own game in 1999.

Anyway, we're not watching this movie tonight - vibeswise it would be a weird combo, and it's going to take a little work to find suitable subs and mux them in, but put a pin in this, we might just come back to it.

So what about this film? In this world, Yang Jian is now living a quiet life as a bounty hunter. Here's the official English-language plot summary, which is very brief:

Twelve years after imprisoning his sister underneath a mountain, Erlang Shen, a god known for his all-seeing third eye, now works as a bounty hunter. A woman hires him and his crew to prevent his nephew, Chenxiang, from obtaining a magical lotus lantern that holds great power.

Beyond that? I can tell you that at some point he wears a fedora. Look, it's in that gif right there. Yeah, I'm flying a little blind on this one ^^'

As things turned out, I didn't end up seeing this at Annecy, since it clashed with Rintarō's new short film... but fortunately, it is now available in the usual places. So the plan tonight is pretty simple: we will be watching both New Gods films, first a reprise of Nezha and then the new Yang Jian.

Higgs Monaghan (real name Peter Englert) is a character from the 2019 game Death Stranding, produced by Kojima Productions on the Decima engine and published by Sony. He’s portrayed by Troy Baker and serves as one of the major antagonists of the game.

I don't know if you know anything about DS nonnie but it's basically a game about rebuilding America via porters and the Chiral Network [which is basically the internet]. After the "Death Stranding" America and the whole world went to shit, with The Beach, BTs, Timefall, and Extinction Entities being massive threats to absolutely everyone. If you want a further explanation on what any of that means just shoot me another ask and I'll go in depth, but I'll explain what I need to in this ask :]

So in DS Higgs is a terrorist leader of a militant separatist group named the "Homo Demens", responsible for the nuking of Middle Knot City and the subsequent ruining of Fragile Express' reputation [a delivery company]. In the game he's introduced to the player somewhat early on, and he's portrayed as this kind of evil dickhead, who's obviously having fun causing chaos. He cracks a few jokes, breaks the fourth wall, is partially unnerving, but most importantly he actually summons a BT [a beached thing, souls stranded in the living world], which is insane because that just hasn't been done by a living human before in game. You can watch the cutscene here, it's so good.

In general Higgs is sadistic, violent, kind of creepy [both normally and sexually [?]], maybe even a tad boyish during a lot of the scenes with him. It's not until his journals, notes, late game, and the DS 2 trailer that we really see anything else. A sort of vulnerability, a past altruism [whether or not genuine is hard to say], a fucking nerd ass personality [he is obsessed with Ancient Egypt]. He's also incredibly jealous and prone to stalker like behaviour [that of which is born from jealousy, a desire to be special], which is a lot more interesting than the kind of otherwise cardboard personality we are given. I do say that affectionately, because Troys' performance is an absolute joy to watch and the writing for him is good, but compared to what we learn through otherwise missable items it's definitely kind of lackluster.

One thing we do learn early on though is that Higgs suffers a condition called DOOMs, which comes from Amelie and results in a greater connection to "the other side" It's characterised by a chiral allergy + greater resistance to chiralium, nightmares of world-wide extinction and destruction, and the ability to sense, see, or control BTs [dependent on the DOOMs level]. It is worth noting that those with DOOMs may also show suicidal, erratic, or homicidal tendencies, a trait also shared with those suffering Chiral Contamination - Higgs shows violent tendencies and - somewhat - poor impulse control. Higgs also fucking hates himself and is heavily nihilistic, so suicidal tendencies is likely LMAO

We also lean that the catalyst for his DOOMs was his uncles death, who had necrotised and popped a BT before he could be incinerated. We know that Higgs, then Peter, became a porter before joining a terrorist organisation, that the group died andthat he ended up becoming a porter AGAIN [a famed one too], before then joining ANOTHER terrorist group and betraying Fragile/joining Amelie. This man is up to no good and so easily susceptible to manipulation it's insane.

So I don't go full analysis TL;DR: Higgs is fucking insane mate

I couldn't remember why I like, 99% avoided the spop fandom at the time it was airing/right after it aired. It wasn't *just* that it wasn't my hyperfixation--it was that I mostly avoided the fandom in general. I had enough friends from other things in the spop fandom that I was able to see some great art on twitter/tumblr, but I didn't go looking for new friends in that fandom, the way I often do.

And I mean yeah I was far more into k/da when spop started airing, but by mid-2020??

Anyway, while digging around looking for old art and meta, along with some GREAT stuff, I find a lot of just dumb, terrible shit. Like: long unreadable posts about why Catra Is The Worst And If You Like Her You Are Also The Worst (she was the main antagonist for four seasons???? that's how that works??????). Or I'm just painfully reminded that a bunch of the worst people from SU fandom were in spop fandom (especially early on).

And I know I've talked about this before, but I remember realizing that the reason I'd been so into k/da was because it was, in fact, very stupid. All the good stuff (outside of the actual songs/videos), the fandom basically made up on our own. The fandom around spop was just SO SERIOUS because, like SU, the show itself was trying to do big things--good things!! around telling stories about queer people and talking about the effects of childhood trauma. (It also, like SU, attracted an audience of mostly young, traumatized queer people.)

But also, just like with SU, it made parts of the fandom insufferable. Because everything is EXTREMELY SERIOUS, YOU KNOW.

I can appreciate all that stuff, but god damn, I am just here to smash my dolls together.

It was just way more fun and relaxing to play around in the sandbox of a media that didn't even expect us to be there and didn't care about us--just try to watch the pop/stars video and tell me it was aimed at sapphics, lolol. To the extent that it appeals to us, it was probably by accident. (I blame Fortiche.) We could have all the fun we wanted, because who gave a shit? Vast majority of people who read/wrote fic for k/da never played League of Legends. We were never their intended audience!

So yeah. I'm four years late to the spop party, sure. But most of the worst people have moved on to other fandoms. Thank God. I can scribble my angst and porn in the corner while muttering under my breath, and only the people who made it through all that shit and stuck around are the people who will bother reading my stuff. They’re not real people, anon, they’re fictional characters. It’s effectively the same as when you take two dolls and make them kiss (as I’m sure most kids did at some point).

I draw the line at rpf or at sexual fiction of characters played by real children/real minors because that’s way too far. For example, smut of the IT (2017?) cast is vile to me in concept and execution.

What you’re talking about is me writing about drawings — lines/pixels with a voice actor — being in sexual situations. Fictional characters can be aged up because they’re, by definition, not real.

Again this is fictional content we’re talking about. Dark fiction has always been a thing and will always be a thing.

I’m taking a literature course at uni and we discuss media depicting rape and worse regularly because it’s part of literature. Writing about something doesn’t mean the writer condones that act and you shouldn’t make assumptions of character based on what someone writes.

That’s like critical media analysis 101 — you sound like you’d go after whump writers and call them murder fetishists or something lol. You’re just really not helping your case AT ALL.

Fiction is fiction; repeat until you understand that principle.

Anon has a good point here, actually! Like their phrasing was terrible and accusatory, but if they’d led with this I’d probably be open to discussion. But burying it beneath two accusations and two insults (at minimum) isn’t going to make someone want to actually discuss the error of the system they’re using.

Of course I’m aware that people lie on the internet. I’m not an idiot — we’ve all clicked on the ‘yes I’m 18+’ pop up on dodgy sites before. I’m also aware that most smart minors will lie about their age to begin with because putting anything smaller than ‘18’ in your bio/pinned is basically a bright flashing neon sign shouting that this person is easy prey for a nonce or something along those lines.

Similarly the use of anon is dodgy and the trust system I use with requesters can easily be taken advantage of.

But what you’re incorrect about is that if I have proof of someone telling me that they’re an adult then I will not be at fault for what happens. If a minor lies to get access to an adult space and gets hurt, then that minor is liable for their own hurt — which is unfortunate but inevitable.

I’m not going to force people to give me their government issued I.Ds because I’m not a complete nutter. That would be dangerous for everyone involved and also probably doxxing. Which is, again, a big no-no.

So for as unfortunately dumb as it is, I’m going to be sticking with the honour system for requests for now. If I find a better, safer way then I’ll use that — but as we don’t have that yet, I’ll use what I’ve got available to me.

To be perfectly frank out of all the characters from TOH, I’m only attracted to Belos and Alador. Most of the ‘characters’ that I end up attracted to are played by people much older than me and, also, not cartoons! Like most slashers, the avengers, and hell even Pierce Brosnan in Black Addam lol.

But that’s irrelevant. You shouldn’t come in to random people’s ask boxes accusing them of horrible things and speaking so cruelly. First is "My Ordinary Life" for the main antagonist of The UnTitledverse, Zachariah the Orchestrator, the "Hand at Fate's Table" and the second-borne Eldritch that is the center point of majority of the multiverse's issues.

Silva may not be aware of it, but she actually has a rivalry with the Voice, or at least her supernatural Third Eye does. Abridged explanation of the Third Eye: some mystical entity commonly tied to the human soul but doesn't necessarily need to be to help its user, usually just retains memories and personality to give some back to the renewed soul upon reincarnating so the variants of the person don't become carbon copies, however instances like Silva and Paul who don't have a soul (due to the circumstances of their "births") they instead only build up their own Third Eye to protect themselves, which gives them back their memories, personality and skills into their next lives deep in their subconscious, so while they don't consciously remember most familiar things they instinctively do and gravitate towards that. The Third Eye also has an OP mode and can enhance the user who is aware and works symbiotically with it in ways humans back in the beginning of the multiverse could do. Paul realized this and gave Silva some subtle lessons (never explicitly saying what it was for) so Silva just thought it was meditation to make her more spiritual with her soul or something and doesn't actually realize until much, much later in her life that she's powerful enough to kill a God if she wanted to. There's a lot more for the Third Eye but I'll explain in a more detailed post.

Anyway, the Voice genuinely hates Silva for constantly foiling its plans in some shape or form, especially by the time of Silva's Hope, as the Voice hasn't exactly made itself look capable of governing one corner of the universe to its extremely cruel and unforgiving superior. And since the Voice is very biased and hypocritical on why "a deputy woman trying to live a normal life is more deserving of torment and needless suffering than the the prophet who killed his daughter for it and the other prophet who gaslit, gatekeeped, manipulated, mansplained, manwhored and manslaughtered his way through life", once Silva becomes aware of the Voice, its on sight. Anyway song below:

A song for the unnamed original trilogy I'm working on, which spins off from the events of Wings And Horns, but focusing on two characters who appeared in it, unnamed but can confirm they're both women, with one being trans. This pair are the first humans to have ever explored the Multiverse, and the trilogy will be following their story in life, navigating the aftermath of the abolishing of the soulmate system, discovering + exploring the Multiverse, and seeking out the Wheel of Reincarnation in the Afterlife, while facing internal and external problems, the most prominent being the Mad Kin of Carnage himself, Discord.

I just finished Batman Eternal (2014) and... I have thoughts. Mostly about the final villain reveal Spoilers underneath

First of all, genuinely, Cluemaster was such an excellent choice for the twist villain because... well for the entire of the he's got an excellent excuse as to why he's part of the story: He's here as part of Steph's backstory. This story reintroduces Steph / Spoiler into the post flashpoint world so of course you've got to do Cluemaster. And he's initially presented more as one person in a much larger scheme who's being forced to kill Steph to save his own skin. And while that subplot spans the entire book Cluemaster doesn't actually get much focus because it's about Steph and her becoming Spoiler. For almost the entire book he's a bit character in one of a half dozen subplots, and what better place to hide the true villain then there? And everything about his scheme, his motivations, his plan, as laid out in issue 51 is a near perfect capstone to the series. And also it's so nice because reading it you just know that this is going to end with Steph turning her bike around and coming back to Gotham and she's going to defeat her dad once and for all and earn her place in the batfam and it'll be a nice clean ending to the series. And then fucking Lincoln March shows up. Lincoln March, in contrast to Cluemaster, wasn't in the story at all. Seriously nothing. I checked and apparently he was the shadowy figure in issue 3 where Cluemaster was introduced, you know, the figure who was never seen or named or had any indication of who he was outside of "probable big bad". He makes his visible debut on the second to last page of the penultimate issue upstaging Cluemaster to be a just worse. And I don't mean more evil I mean qualitatively inferior (accept in ability to fight). Lincoln March feels like a cop out, a dodge of the basic principle of storytelling to introduce your main antagonist prior to climax. And maybe at the time he was a major player in the comics so him popping up here makes sense in the boarder context of the DCU but in this story his inclusion as the big bad is an ass pull. Which is a shame, because besides a bit of a bumpy start while the story got all it's subplots set up and rolling the story was actually pretty good and Cluemaster as the big bad actually made things come together for me but Lincoln March's appearance just... idk it leaves me feeling cheated out of a proper ending.

finally getting around to watching 13's run in full (just finished rewatching s11, about to start s12) in preparation for the 60th anniversary and i have thoughts. so here's a rambling post to try and sum them up cohesively:

i know i'm not the only one who feels that chibnall's run feels a bit disconnected. part of that was no doubt intentional (new doctor, new showrunner, new start) but it feels a little too disconnected. in fact it almost feels like a spin-off rather than the main series.

Jodie's a good actress, but i'm not entirely sold on 13's personality. one thing about New Who is that you can pretty logically understand the progression of the the Doctor's personalities throughout the various series & regenerations, but 13 feels just a tad off. after 12's run it makes sense that 13 would be lighter & happier, but the way she's written makes it feel more like a regression than a progression. the narrative often makes her come off a over-excitable and less competent, partly because of chibnall's wish to have an unconnected series. i like that we got introductions to the bigger universe of DW instead of the same antagonists over and over, but having 13 constantly not recognizing or not being able to figure things out on her own felt almost condescending.

i like all the companions in theory (except Dan since i haven't seen s13 yet). on paper, they're all very distinct from each other, which was a concern i had since previous companions sometimes felt like different shades of the same color. in practice, i don't think they're developed enough individually for me to form strong feelings about any of them. i feel like the writers took a shortcut expecting viewers to automatically favor the companions and then didn't build enough of a bridge to get me to actually like them as characters.

so far the pacing of nearly every episode also feels off. i'm not as familiar with chibnall's writing signatures as i am with Davies or Moffat, but if i was just basing it off of s11 & s12, i'd say he struggles with self-contained one episode stories. doctor who has always offered a lot of social commentary, but sometimes i think he tries to pack in too many layers that the overall message gets muddled. most episode feel like the intro drags and the ending is rushed. there is an issue with keeping an appropriate level of tension throughout.

this is a personal preference, but i also didn't like the level of connectivity/foreshadowing we got in s11. the stenza get mentioned in s11e1 and e2, and then dropped until e10. when Tim Shaw pops up again in the finale, it feels less like the return of a major antagonist and more like they just didn't have anyone else to bring in. intentionally or not, the narrative feels like it blames 13 for Tim Shaw's actions. the doctor's lack of follow-through is a fair criticism of their past actions that has been rightly levied against them before, but in this case it felt like it came from nowhere.

i only got halfway through s12 the first time. i'm hopeful that it'll feel more cohesive once i watch the entirety, and i've heard good things about s13, so i'm excited about that.

I’ve got A Thing That Bugs Me today

So im not really connected to the Community as a whole. I just hang around in my own corner on the internet. Sometimes I genuinely forget some people in the community can be aphobic

But oh my god being reminded that some cis gay people don’t consider my existence “queer enough” hurts so much sometimes

I used to watch this youtuber who talks about queer representation. I found myself disagreeing with too many stuff he was saying so I unsubscribed, but he still pops up in my recommendations

He made a video about queerbaiting, and spend a majority of it referencing a certain anime that’s very important to me

He claimed that the “main ship” (main ship in the fandom, they’re not canon) was queerbaiting. He gave his reasons. And while I don’t agree, because it’s a sports anime and there’s no straight couples in it either, I could see where he was coming from and was planning to leave a comment engaging in the discussion

But halfway through he switched from “queerbaiting” to “gaybating” and that,,, that really hurt

I’m asexual. I’m aromantic. I WANT a friend that shares the same hobbies as me and supports me through hardships. I want stories that explore the complexities of friendships, how characters handle their interests suddenly not aligning and how they persevere in spite of that because they care about each other

That’s why I love this anime. There’s no romance (I have my ships but I don’t want anything more from canon). The only canon romantic thing in this is a supporting character kissing a girl that is never seen again. Friendship is a CENTRAL theme. The antagonist gets “defeated” throughout the power of friendship and learns to fix his own friendship. The older characters become friends with the protagonist and it helps them in their own friendship

I really wanted to engage in this discussion in the comments. But when this guy switched from “queerbaiting” to “gaybaiting” it felt so hurtful. The anime never promised ANY relationships. It was another reminder that my experiences (and wish fulfillment fiction, because let’s be honest, friendships are way harder to maintain in real life) aren’t queer enough for some people. And they won’t hesitate to tell me that

(I preach a lot about the difference between fiction and reality, but I also think someone’s reaction to fiction is an indicator of their character. And I can’t stress this enough. The anime never promised queer characters. It promoted itself as solely about sports and friendship. It wasn’t baiting because they never promised queerness)

While I don’t think this guy’s intention was to be aphobic, he sided with aphobes. He sided with the people telling me I’m not queer enough by making a 40+ minute video about how these pixels not kissing is proof that the creators are baiting gays

I know I should be used to this but I’m just. Hurt. I didn’t go through 5 years of internalized aphobia just to be told I don’t belong here

Same anon about the woobification of Wukong, yeah that's 100% right. Like there's such a lack of nuance and greyscale to the majority of fandom and it's so depressing. Personally I tend to look at chatacters in two ways: 1. How they entertain me during the show and 2. Then deeper character analysis later. (God I've rewatched LMK so many times at this point)

But like, fandom seems to have it so bad that if you like a character you 100% support everything they do! Like no! Spider queen and Iron Fan and Macaque and LBD are great villains and some of my faves! Because they so much fun to watch every time they pop up! I am entertained and thriving. But as people? Oh no no not the...best people for sure. But am I enthralled 100% when they appear? Again YES!

I think so many people get mixed up in fandom politics and drama that it feels hard to find the right people to vibe with anymore. And it's so prominent because LMK is such a tiny fandom.

Conversely, Macaque is my favorite. I'd fight him if I was a character in the show, but I'm not therefore I get to enjoy him as a fictional antagonist as much as I please. (Also I do find it funny that the majority of the fandom hates him on sight but LBD - who seemed to want to comit mass murder - seems to get a huge pass from those same people lmao!)

And also super glad I could brighten your day! I really love this AU so much. I may send you anonymous drabbles if I have the energy to write. :)

on the bit about nuance; i've learned to let a lot of the shit takes i see here go because i realize a lot of the fandom is young and admittedly i had a lot of shit takes in the past because things flew over my head. even now i'm bad at analyzing. i typically jump straight to this character is my favorite fuck you and everyone you love and i'm the most correct person here fuck you LOL but also it's important to recognize that you aren't the most correct person. it's about being open to other perspectives! and of course at the end of it you can just set it aside and be like 'yes i've learned and i've decided this isn't for me'

there's nothing wrong with mindlessly absorbing media but all that can go right out the window if you're tryna interact with someone else who has a radically different view than you about it, and you try to shout over them

also fuck LBD me and all my homies hate LBD. that being said, all of LMK's villains are REALLY good. rather than like. their motivations that are really just run of the mill villain stuff, their characters are so charismatic and there really does end up being hints that there's more to them than just absolute control. it's fun! the writing for LMK is just. really good. i need to rewatch but i have like this emotional thing about going over stuff i've already completed in case it makes me experience Emotional all over again kek
