seonghwa's ideal date to take his crush is not just a simple date but a day trip. a warm place with a sea breeze and the scent of the ocean. open and sophisticated locations, natural landscapes, and people who are not easily distracted from the company of those they enjoy, just like him. seeing the cards i got i thought of jeju island, of course.

he's the type who would like to walk hand in hand with you as you stroll and look for something fun. i can see that he might avoid intense rides or those that generate a lot of adrenaline (like roller coasters, for example) and would prefer to go on gentler rides, like the carousel or the Ferris wheel - especially the latter one because san is such a romantic guy, and there's nothing more romantic than being at the top of the ferris wheel, holding hands with his love while looking at the tiny people and lights down below. to wrap it up, street food for you to share, like popcorn, bungeoppang, corn dog or hotteoks (real ones, not people)

WOOYOUNG

wooyoung is the king of great ideas for romantic dates, but here he seems to have something more homey to do with his crush in the ideal date, like simply cooking together and spending the night enjoying each other's company. he's the type who offers the complete experience: you go to the market together and pick out the ingredients (after changing your minds 5 times about the main dish and finally deciding to make simple pasta or dumplings) to get in the mood.

he puts on some background music and wear aprons just for the aesthetic while cooking with you, "chef wooyoung and his assistant". he kisses your neck and hugs you from behind while you cut the vegetables he asked you to and when you're all done, the amount of dishes to wash is freaking big but it doesn't really matter.

My favorite unofficial friend group is Rachel, Grover, Percy, Annabeth, Nico, and Will cause yes I am well aware that some of these have no basis in cannon whatsoever but I think the dynamic would be fun like:

They’re all first arc kids and I like to think there’s some odd unspoken bond from that

Tartarus club

Golden trio

Also people forget that Rachel and Grover spent a lot of time together during hoo so I’d imagine they’d be close

Nico and Percy as the token big three kids

Grover and Percy are best friends I will die on this hill

I like to think that Annabeth and Will had a similar relationship to Percy and Nico (minus the crush lol) and that they’re super close these days.

All of them fought in both big wars

Grover as the token straight friend

Rachel + Will dying all of their hair

Solangelo Percabeth double dates

Rachel and Grover stop each other from feeling like third wheels (which rarely happens)

They all hang out at Sally’s … like a lot. Cause she’s pretty much the closest any of them has to a mother figure (except will??)

Will and Grover (and probably Percy) grow weed. Will uses it a lot as a medicinal herb, but he also smokes it with Grover and Percy from time to time. Also they all make weed brownies together one time and then watch Disney’s Hercules together and it’s a wreck.

TONS of karaoke, made all the better by the fact that none of them can sing. Rachel is definitely the best tho

Possible meanings for Sydney's tattoo

the past, present, and future.

So, obviously, the tattoo is supposed to represent pain and heartbreak. It is the tarot card: Three of Swords.

Still, it is very curious in the context of the scenes it was shown in, what we know about Sydney, and the possible meanings of the tarot card itself. I would like to explore the possible meanings of it all. If I put something in quotes, it means a meaning attributed to the tarot card I found.

Even if "heartbreak" could have a lot of meanings, in Sydney's case, I think it's safe to bet it is about a romantic relationship; otherwise, They wouldn't have shown it in the context of her undressing herself, edited right before a shot of Claire running to kiss Carmy. Carmy was making pasta, something she was doing with her one morning when they were at peace at his apartment, their bond in full motion. But now Carmy is in his apartment with Claire, making pasta for her; in the shot, right before he kisses Claire, Carmy is cleaning the table right before she comes in as if Carmy is trying to erase Sydney's presence from the object and his memory.

The card could be about Sydney, Carmy, and Clare; foreshadowing, its 3 swords 3 people in a love triangle.

"This is likely to be a time of tears, sadness, and heartbreak in your life. If you're in a relationship, this can sometimes point to a breakup, a conflict, or separation. Since this card is a three, it can also mean to a third party, creating trouble in your relationship."

It could be about the turmoil of Sydney and Carmy's relationship:

"You and your partner may face complex problems to remain together. Without clear and respectful discussions and a willingness to work together, the relationship can reach its end."

This last sentence may summarize the entire continuity of Syd and Carmy's connection to this day. Of course, the tattoo does not predict the future, this is still about a love-related wound of her past, but we are talking about the Bear, things have multiple meanings. The fact that she was hurt by someone that Carmy reminds him of in any way, someone she lost over a hurtful exchange of words when Carmy and her have such miscommunications but yet so much telepathic connection...would be brilliant.

3 swords: love triangle, past and present. Sydney is somehow finding herself at the center of multiple love triangles. Marcus-Sydney-Carmy, and Sydney-Carmy-Claire. It would be quite ironic to find out this is something she was involved in before, the reason she got the tattoo in the first place. So, she will be a woman who has lived through 3 love triangles (3 of 3).

A mark of a damaging relationship.

"Your heart has been pierced by the sharp blades of others' hurtful words, actions, and intentions, and they have inflicted intense emotions of pain, sadness, grief, and heartbreak (...) hurt and disappointment".

I don't mean to say she was in a toxic relationship. She has so little tolerance for Carmy's bullshit to tolerate a poisonous partner; she calls bad behavior what it is. But I think it could be a reminder of a relationship that ended badly, that left a scar in her heart, maybe accentuated by hurtful words like "this is all your fault" and "this is why you will never accomplish anything." This meaning could also be foreshadowing about Carmy, someone whose words have hurt her in the past.

It may be about Sydney having a "closed" heart like the swords are interjecting one another in the handles of the door of her heart, closing it forever. This is another meaning of the card:

'If you're single, it may be that past grief and suffering is affecting your ability to date. Past wounds have not yet healed, and it's important to give yourself time before you attempt to find love again."

I like these last two theories the most, and they are not mutually exclusive. It could give us an idea that Sydney has experienced a departure/rejection/abandonment from a loved one that is as traumatic for her as Mickey's abandonment was for Carmy. This will be her "core' wound, what John Truby calls "the character's ghost." Carmy lost his brother after not speaking to him for who knows how long, and she could have lost someone after a hurtful exchange of words, even followed by an abrupt death too.

Little side note, I kinda love that they use the "optimistic character with the darkest past" trope, which is so common in anime, my friend and I used to say "You see that goofy ass making jokes all the time, with colorful clothes, bright smiles that could cure diseases, the one making sure everyone can reach their full potential? yeah that one has the worst past of them all" That is basically Sidney, so much dramatic irony in putting her (and pairing her) with someone like Carmy who is the "boy that looks exactly as fuck up as he actually is" trope.

Her mother's death is a profound one, yes. Still, I doubt that loss could have taught her to be "closed" to love, especially growing up with such a loving father; who reminds her often of how much he loved her mother. If she ever learned to equal love with pain, she didn't learn it from him, because Emanuel seems grateful that the love was there in the first place. He doesn't think, "I wish I never had her because I wouldn't ever have experienced this kind of pain," partially because he wouldn't otherwise have Sydney. Still, it is a response to many people's grief, the regret of the love itself.

I recently read this post; shoutout to @bioloyg for this finding: Sydney doesn't say "I love you" to her father, even after he tells her that the restaurant "is the thing," his approval was the thing that carried her arc in this season. Well, she doesn't "say it" out loud; you can see she "mouths" it. There is a reason why there are scenes when we see Sydney run away from Marcus' forms of affection (Marcus staring at her in conversation in 2x01, and feeling the need to make a joke after seeing Marcus staring at her with heart eyes in their Facetime call after the "I miss you too"). Her heart is closed for business (see what I did there). She has feelings for Carmy already, but maybe she is contextualizing them in the feelings of being abandoned by a friend or "partner." The strength of these feelings is something she has yet to realize. If she ever does, will it be on her own or after Carmy has figured out his feelings for her and starts to show it in any way? In the table scene, it is, to us, the first time she has ever caught him staring at her, and only because of how vulnerable she feels does she have the need to look at him back. My god, just the idea of being afraid to open your wound and "close for business" heart to someone who hasn't learned what healthy love is yet... these two are soulmates that could be so poisonous to one another, yet so deeply healing.

Supernovas in a Modern AU

Officially, Apoo is a DJ, and he’ll go around to different parties and weddings to do his thing. One time he was invited to a church to play the piano and was never invited again. However, in his free time, he streams. He mostly plays My Singing Monsters, Just Dance, or Beat Saber VR, but he's always open to suggestions in the chat. He started writing his own music as well and has grown a pretty loyal following.

Bege still runs his Mafia business but is also the founder of one of the local shoe shops in the heart of the city. It's a nicer place that sells dress shoes and occasionally tuxedos. He always uses the place as an alibi or a cover-up to excuse his whereabouts whenever the cops come and question him and his boys.

Bonney owns and operates a small pizzeria located on the corner of the road. She hardly ever has any rude customers due to the place having a Waffle House type of reputation, girlie is always ready to throw down in the parking lot. And on the weekends, when her shop's not open, she'll go down to the local board game clubs and play Jenga with whoever's there.

X Drake joined the Military the second he got out of high school and never looked back. It always felt like the right decision for him, especially since his parents couldn't afford for him to go to college. Once he retired, however, he turned to zookeeping in the reptile exhibits. He loves his job and will go to Drake concerts whenever he has the money and time to go to one.

Urouge is the pastor at his church (and a regular at the clubs). Some are put off by him, whereas others find him to be comforting to confess to. He considers himself to be a man of the Lord, even if he frequents the cabaret clubs a tad too often.

Hawkins is, more often than not, operating his interior design business, but he does have a little voodoo shop on the side and will frequently read his tarot cards to people who walk in. He's also somewhat of a hit with the farmers as he makes them all scarecrows in August that help keep critters out of their crops.

Law is a traveling doctor who likes to help in areas that are in the midst of pandemics/epidemics. He always feels obligated to go to those places specifically. He always gives kids heart-shaped stickers whenever they've been treated by him. His reputation is very shrouded and some people consider him to be a modern grim reaper whenever he visits their country, blaming him for whatever illness that has spread.

Kid is an avid gun supporter and, as such, sells and makes them. He owns a shooting range and almost all of the Rage Rooms in the city. Whenever he's free, he and Kiler will go down to some of the nearby raves and party together.

Killer runs a pasta shop within Kid's shooting range. He's the one who usually deals with bad customers so that Kid doesn't get himself another lawsuit. He's also known for being the one to end all of the fights picked with Kid.

Blackbeard is one of those really cocky, know-it-all museum employees who make people feel dumb whenever they ask a question. He gambles a lot, has limited knowledge of most of the stuff in his exhibits, and probably deals crack cocaine with people in the alleyways.

Using Tarot To Help You Write

Right ok, so I’ve wanted to do this for a bit - there are vague references to tarot in my story TRT and I’ve answered a few questions about how I use the RWS-style tarot to write but now I have a little bit of time while I wait for my laundry to dry. So let’s get into it.

If you’re looking for another tool in your writer’s kit, you could strongly consider adding a box of tarot cards to the bag. Set aside, for a minute, what you’ve heard about it. Set aside any spiritual aspect, telling the future, the ‘OoOOOooOOh evil’, or even the ‘DRAW DEATH MEANS DEATH’ you see in movies. Instead, strip it down to its base.

Tarot is about telling a story.

From a storytelling perspective, the first 18 cards of the RWS style tarot, known as the Major Arcana, essentially tell the Hero’s Journey as the Hero sets out on an adventure and searches for knowledge. There’s disaster, love, temptation, and wise people they meet along the way before eventually finding enlightenment at the end of their journey. The Major Arcana contains major archetypes and themes present through so many stories. When you add in the rest of the cards in the Minor Arcana - the other 56 cards, encompassing a variety of emotions, archetypes, figures, and various life events you might run into - you’ve got something perfect when you want to introduce new elements to your story. I keep a small deck on my desk and use it frequently when creating random OCs, plotlines, or problems for characters to solve.

And before you go, holy shit Pasta that’s a lot to take in, using tarot for your story doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need to have 20 years of tarot experiences, you don’t need to be an expert, you don’t need A Great Gift. You don’t have to know about tarot at all, really. You just need one thing:

The right storytelling deck.

More below the cut.

Look, there are a million styles out there, some that focus heavily on storytelling imagery and some that focus more on symbols; some that feature animals or nature, and some that focus on people. I generally lean towards animal-based decks since I’m more familiar with animal/nature imagery, body language, and symbolism, but in reality the best deck to use for writing is simply the one you’ll actually use. If you’re drawn to one, go for it. That being said, if you’re looking for something to use without needing to get into all the symbolism of each card, I generally recommend using a deck in which all cards, including the Minor Arcana, depict a scene you can examine - aka, one that plays up a story rather than a straight up symbol. Let me show you an example with three decks.

Left: Mystical Cats tarot; Middle: Oriens tarot; Right: Children of Litha tarot

These all depict the same card: the Seven of Swords, meant to depict deceit, theft, betrayal, lies, and trickery. The middle card relies a little more heavily on symbolic meaning (the black widow spider, which ‘betrays’ when mating and uses a sticky web - symbolizing a potential trap), whereas the other two cards show an active scene (Card 1: OH NO HE’S GONNA STEAL YER MOUSE WHILE YOU’RE NOT LOOKING; Card 3: YOU LOVESTRUCK DIPSHITS, TURN AROUND, THE SNAKE’S EATING YOUR EGGS). I’ve found cards like Card 1 and Card 3 are faster and more convenient for storytelling, because you’re basically presented with a scenario/characters/a situation right off the bat, whereas a symbolic card is more open-ended and might require some digging unless you’re already fairly familiar with the symbolism. If you’re going to get a deck that depicts people instead, I recommend looking for a deck that’s diverse. Humans come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and having a deck that reflects that (something like the Modern Witch tarot) is valuable for storytelling. So if you’re picking a deck to help you write, look for:

Decks that use scenes/storytelling imagery for all cards

Decks with imagery/body language you can easily read at a glance

If you’re looking for a deck with people - decks with a diverse range of body types, ethnicities, sexualities, and genders

A deck with imagery you actually like, otherwise you won’t want to use it

‘Ok, so let’s say I’ve found a deck, or I already have one. What does using tarot for fic even look like?’

Let’s do two quick readings for two writing scenarios you might use this for! This will also show you can be as complex or as simple as you need to be. These are also the two scenarios I use tarot for most when writing - character construction, and plotline construction. First I’ll use the Children of Litha tarot, which uses a moderate amount of storytelling imagery. Then I’ll use the Mystical Cats tarot, which is probably the most story-heavy deck I have, imagery-wise. That way, you can see how construction gets a bit easier depending on how scene-heavy a deck is.

Scenario: I need an original character for this chapter or scene! Quick, draw three cards!

Quick reading: she’s very gentle but there are also two tigers inside her and one of them wants to kill you, especially if you fuck with her pet birds

More complex reading - Personality, Flaw, Backstory:

Card 1 - Personality: This character is someone who’s unafraid and bold in their kindness even when faced with danger, and they know when a gentle touch is needed. They believe strength is found not in being cruel or violent but in responding with love. This usually works out for them, to the point that even Scary People (TM) seek this character out, knowing they’ll find love and affection. Alternatively, this character is one half of the Brooding Rough One Loves The Gentle Soft One trope. Whatever works for you!

Card 2 - Flaw: Despite all that, the gentle character’s got a temper, and it exists in direct conflict to what they believe about strength, thus producing cognitive dissonance. This is someone who’ll dodge conflict to avoid showing their temper, but eventually that repression’s going to blow up into a real fight and it’ll be messy.

Card 3 - backstory: This temper and conflict avoidance is due to some tragic incident in their past that left them deeply wounded. It’s one reason they’re so gentle, but there’s a lot of lingering anger and trauma. These wounds are not healed, and if you look deep enough, you’re going to find blood.

Depending on how important this character is, you could add even more: a card for a strength, a card for a challenge they need to overcome to grow as a person, their family dynamic, etc. Again, you can make it as detailed or as simple as you need.

PASTA NOW I NEED A LITTLE PLOTLINE FOR CHARACTERS TO SOLVE. Quick, draw four!

Quick reading: holy SHIT your characters gotta move fast, cause there’s a pissed off dude out there who wants revenge NOW and is ready to fuck up a *shuffles cards and draws* religious temple of peaceful cat loving monks, one of whom is the one that fucked up Angry Dude in the first place WHEN HE WAS A BABY WITH HIS MAMA, PLOT TWIST OH NO, IT’S PROBABLY THAT ASSHOLE STEVE IN THE BACK OF THE THIRD CARD, LOOK AT HIM LOOKING OFF INTO THE DISTANCE.

More complex reading - Theme, Problem, Setting, Solution:

Card 1 - Theme: As you can tell from our cat with zoomies, your protagonists are on a clock. The theme here is urgency, it’s speed. Things will start off with a bang and they won’t have much time to slow down. This’d be good for a one shot or a chapter.

Card 2 - Problem: look at that cat, they’re so ANGRY, they are PISSED, someone did them dirty and they’ve been stewing over it for a while. They can’t stop feeling that betrayal no matter how much they try to lick it off shake it off forget about it. They want REVENGE for what was done to them and they’re gonna cut someone up.

Card 3 - Setting: Ah, a peaceful, sunny place where everyone’s just chilling. Everyone’s happy. Maybe a religious place, say, a church or a convent or hell, a nudist retreat. Either way, no one knows what’s coming. Except (and this is why scene cards are so fun)... for STEVE there in the back. Look at him. Everyone’s relaxing in the sun but he’s staring out into the distance. He knows. And just like that, Steve’s the In Hiding person who betrayed our Problem - Steve the Asshole isn’t a part of the Sun card’s meaning, but a storytelling scene card lets you stretch like this and have fun.

Card 4 - solution: Clearly the only person who can stop Bad Person... is their MAMA (or potentially his siblings). Maybe a character goes to find the Problem’s mother and brings her to the church to talk the Problem into giving up. Maybe the protagonists desperately tell the Problem that your family wouldn’t have wanted this, even if that family was hurt - the Empress is generally very nurturing and loving, so that’s a fair bet. Either way, the solution to the Problem is their family.

Once you get the hang of this, you’ll start to find other ways you can use it. I’ve used it for creating quick or more complex or more randomized characters, for creating plotlines and character arcs, for a few of Jane’s cases in TRT. You can use it for backstories, for settings, for problems and solutions, for deeper themes to explore with your characters. Hell, if you want some practice, you could literally go through the Major Arcana and write one-shots dealing with each card’s theme. Ultimately the possibilities are endless, whether you want to construct a detailed plotline or if you just have a new character you want to randomize or flesh out a bit.

In short: go get yourself a deck and have some fun!

The Pasta Tarot

I am in love with this deck. I bought it mostly thinking it would be novelty, but that I might be able to come up with some fun dinner ideas with it. Turns out, it's not only beautifully designed, it's also got a great sense of humor and has a wonderfully queer theme throughout.

The coating on this cards is unlike any other, there's a tiny relief on both sides that means they slide across one another without really getting stuck. I seriously cannot recommend this deck enough. It's funny, beautiful and shuffles like a dream, what more could you want?
