This is the Lord’s House
The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. Psalms‬ ‭27‬:‭4‬ Growing up, my uncle had a ‘cabin’ on a lake a couple hours north of where we lived. I use the word ‘cabin’ in quotes because what my uncle referred to as the cabin was not what I would think of a…

May, 26 (Evening) Devotion
“Continue in the faith.”
Acts 14:22
Perseverance is the badge of true saints. The Christian life is not a beginning only in the ways of God, but also a continuance in the same as long as life lasts. It is with a Christian as it was with the great Napoleon: he said, “Conquest has made me what I am, and conquest must maintain me.” So, under God, dear brother in the Lord, conquest has made you what you are, and conquest must sustain you. Your motto must be, “Excelsior.” He only is a true conqueror, and shall be crowned at the last, who continueth till war’s trumpet is blown no more. Perseverance is, therefore, the target of all our spiritual enemies. The world does not object to your being a Christian for a time, if she can but tempt you to cease your pilgrimage, and settle down to buy and sell with her in Vanity Fair. The flesh will seek to ensnare you, and to prevent your pressing on to glory. “It is weary work being a pilgrim; come, give it up. Am I always to be mortified? Am I never to be indulged? Give me at least a furlough from this constant warfare.” Satan will make many a fierce attack on your perseverance; it will be the mark for all his arrows. He will strive to hinder you in service: he will insinuate that you are doing no good; and that you want rest. He will endeavour to make you weary of suffering, he will whisper, “Curse God, and die.” Or he will attack your steadfastness: “What is the good of being so zealous? Be quiet like the rest; sleep as do others, and let your lamp go out as the other virgins do.” Or he will assail your doctrinal sentiments: “Why do you hold to these denominational creeds? Sensible men are getting more liberal; they are removing the old landmarks: fall in with the times.” Wear your shield, Christian, therefore, close upon your armour, and cry mightily unto God, that by his Spirit you may endure to the end.

In Every Respect
“Jesus, full of and controlled by the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led in [by] the [Holy] Spirit For (during) forty days in the wilderness (desert), where He was tempted (tried, tested exceedingly) by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, He was hungry.” Luke 4:1-2AMPC
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read this scripture, hundreds for sure. Never have I noticed v2 of our text— “He was tempted (tried, tested exceedingly) by the devil.” KJV says, “He was tempted by the devil.”
Have you ever wondered how the scripture— “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One Who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:15ESV could be true when Jesus was only tempted with three temptations in the wilderness? Well, I’ve wondered many times.
First thing, I can imagine Him being tempted with — hunger pangs. Forty days without eat— nearly impossible. Don’t believe this is true for Jesus? Try going 3 days on a fast without eating. I can tell you —it’s possible to smell your favorite food, which isn’t anywhere close around, by the third day. Jesus was a human.
From there, I don’t know how, but He was tempted sexually, because it says He was tempted in “every respect” like us. Everyone has been tempted sexually, even those people we think of as saints. Let your imagination take you to other things you’ve been tempted with, knowing Jesus suffered a similar temptation— “all points” per KJV, is ‘everything.’
Jesus understands our temptations because satan was there in the wilderness tempting Him. Then He was tempted with the three big temptations, making stones turn to bread; possessing once again everything lost in the ‘fall of Adam;’ and lastly tempting God. That sin is unique in that it allows us to see we can tempt God to provocation or into being angry.
For me this has endeared Jesus even more to me. The times I’ve fought with sinful anger, or feelings of rebellion— yes Jesus was tempted with these feelings as well. Since He overcame, we can ask His help to overcome as well. In just the next verse of Hebrews tells us— “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
We can thank and praise Jesus for He being willing to be tempted by what we’re tempted with. He had to prove it was possible for Him to endure all the sins and not give in to sin— amazing. Doing this so He could help us. Little wonder James 4:7ESV “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” was written. Submitting to God aka Jesus for His help we can put up real resistance against satan in every respect. Question is— will we resist with the passion of our Christ Jesus He was “tempted (tried, tested exceedingly) by the devil”? It’s your choice. You choose.
LET’S PRAY: Father God You know how willing our spirits are and how weak our flesh is. Please help us. Strength our resolve in our minds to match that of our spirits to enable us to overcome, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

Monday of Holy Week (Psalm 36:5-11)
The Via Dolorosa (Latin: the way of sorrows) is a narrow path through the streets of the Old Jerusalem, the final route traveled by Jesus of Nazareth on the way to his crucifixion. Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,    your faithfulness to the clouds.Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains;    your judgments are like the great deep;    you save humans and animals alike,…

Dionysus isn't a meme
every time i look through the "Dionysus" tag, all i get is percy jackson, the hades game, cute fanart of him and'/or ariadne, or funny haha memes. so few people seem to understand that Dionysus is not just some silly little androgynous fella who loves wine and his wife. He's a god of contradictions, being both one of the oldest and youngest gods worshipped for thousands of years. He's a liberator, not only of the mental cage and burdens of society, but literally, he would travel around and free people who were being treated unfairly.
I've read that archaeologists still sometimes can't tell if art is of Jesus or Dionysus. Dionysus gave us theatre, a way to tell stories on a much grander scale to a much wider audience. He sees no gender or sexuality, for he is of them all, and he calls and accepts everyone who desires to be free.
Sure, yes, he can be silly, he can be flamboyant, and he'll do anything for his loved ones, but he's not just a goofy guy for people to use in joke text memes. this is my patron god. he's been with me my whole life. part of my life is devoted to theatre, my greatest passion, because of him. i feel comfortable with my mental illnesses and femininity because of him. yes, i may call him my dude and think of him as my fun, goofy uncle or whatever, but he seriously means a lot to me. practically every aspect of my life has been touched by him. he frees me from my doubts and insecurities. he encourages me to pursue life's delights in spite of my struggles. he gives me HOPE.
the whole reason i named this blog after Dionysus is because i've always held him in my heart, and he has always been here for me. please don't just water him down to a funny guy who drinks wine.

What If It's Not What You Think?

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Romans 12:15 A Tool for Evangelism I was talking to a work friend and I had planned to encourage her with the Word of God, see where she was spiritually, and try to win her over to Jesus, but there was a problem. Secondo Emeritus - Naples
Primo | Secondo | Terzo
Tumblr media
Naples. My beautiful Naples. My beloved, adored Naples. It is the city where I studied and grew up in and it is also literally filled with mysteries and legends. I thought Naples would have been the perfect formation place for a young Secondo Emeritus. Let’s see what may have influenced and inspired him in his religious journey.
1 - The musical church.
Tumblr media
Ghost’s music has always been heavily loaded with the Devil’s Tritone: also called Diabulus in Musica or Devil’s Interval, it is an unsettling dissonance produced by an unusual arrangement of notes that gives that spooky, devilish tone to music. In Infestissumam, it was featured on 9 out of 10 songs. The use of the Tritone was banned in Medieval times (In Ghost, its use dramatically dropped with Prequelle, with only 2 out of 10 songs featuring it). So what if I tell you that, in contrast, in Naples there is a church that functions as a musical score, whose music protects it from evil?
Basically, there is a church in Piazza del Gesù that has a particular pointy ashlar on the external facade. Under the side (the one facing the ground, so if you look up from the street you can see them) of each of these little pyramids are carved symbols, which turned out to be Aramaic letters that were later translated into musical notes. So, it turned out that the whole church is a big score, and it’s playable. The whole melody, called Enigma, was played for the first time inside the church to celebrate the discovery. You can hear the music here (sound quality is not the best).
Will it protect the church from Ghost’s music?
2 - The skull cult.
Tumblr media
Naples has very intricate underground galleries, almost all visitable. One of these is Cimitero delle Fontanelle, a famous catacomb where the remains of about 40.000 people who died from plagues are stored. It is said the “anime pezzentelle” cult was born here: it is a particular relationship each Neapolitan establishes with a chosen skull. You literally adopt an abandoned skull, which according to our tradition is the seat of the soul, and your duty is to care for it, protect it and also create a special niche for it. In exchange, the soul of that skull will protect you.
A nice place for a Bone Daddy.
3 - Pretty and Evil like Mergellina’s devil.
Tumblr media
Knowing the passion our Secondo has for women, here is a story about a very devilish one.
In Santa Maria del Prato church, in the Mergellina area, there is the only representation of the devil as a woman in a painting.
The legend has it that said woman was the beautiful Vittoria D’Avalos, who seduced the Bishop Diomede Carafa, who commissioned the painting in 1542 to represent his victory against the woman’s lust (we're all believing him, right? 🙄).
Now that story has a way of saying that refers to femmes fatales as “Pretty and Evil like Mergellina’s devil”.
I’d say she may be considered among the first-ever Sisters of Sin.
4 - Who gives life can also take it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Infestissumam is filled with references to birth and Jesus, turning it into the birth of the antichrist and creating a narrative that is completely opposite to the birth of the Son of Man. Now, in Naples, there is a statue that embodies both concepts.
Back to Piazza del Gesù: On a very high pedestal in the center of the square stands a statue of the Virgin Mary, the Mother. That's all... until you position yourself at a specific point in the square and look up to see the statue transformed into the Reaper. His face is hidden by the cowl, staring straight at you, with a sickle at its feet and a snake crawling on it.
Depending on your point of view, the giver of life becomes the taker of it.
5 - Body and Blood… but especially blood.
Tumblr media
What never stops to fascinate me about the relationship of Neapolitans with religion is the very thin line between devotion and pure blasphemy. It is the case of the “miracle” of San Gennaro’s blood. It happens twice a year and it consists in bringing the Saint’s blood in a liquid state again (after centuries it is obviously solidified). The particular thing is that during this ritual, the worshippers (and the priests too) literally insult the saint to convince him to make the miracle happen, because if it doesn’t work, it means that something terrible is about to happen.
(Last time it didn’t work was right before the Covid pandemic 🙂)
I’d say this could have been a great inspiration for Body and Blood and Idolatrine.
Honorable mention to the fact that I have lived 32 years now on this Earth and I never attended this event even though I would like to.
Bonus: Now, I said that Dante would come back in the chapters, and he is. In fact, not only Virgilio died in Naples (and he is the protector of the city) but, apparently, the gates of Hell Dante mentioned in his comedy were located on the Averno lake, near Pozzuoli, not far from Naples.

I mentioned on a previous Ask that I used to be a florist, (man, do I miss that job...) and lovely @doughmonkey suggested I should match the Pedro Boys with flowers... so, here you are! 🪻🌷🌻
Enjoy! 🖤
Jett's Pedro Boy Rambles Masterlist
Flora & Fauna Masterlist
Tumblr media
The sunniest flower for our sunniest Pedro Boy, Javi. Sunflowers often represent the sun and Javi just beams like it, doesn't he? Sunflowers also bring good fortune, and represent a long life and lasting happiness. It is often seen as a symbol of faith and devotion, radiating positivity and hope. In some Eastern religions, such as Buddhism, sunflowers are considered sacred and represent spiritual enlightenment. Or, divine inspiration, as Javi would say...
Tumblr media
Sweet Peas represent goodbyes and yearning. In Victorian England, for example, sweet peas were often given as a sign of departure or goodbye to a loved one. Considering Joel has lost Sarah, I'd say a Sweet Pea would be a good representation of a flower for Joel. Sweet Peas also can mean blissful pleasure, friendship and gratitude. They come in all sorts of colours too, such as shades of white, pink, coral, red, violet and blue, and some combining two colours.
Tumblr media
More subtle than the bold traditional red rose, pink roses typically symbolise admiration, happiness, and love. Pink roses also symbolise sweetness, femininity, appreciation, and admiration - all traits that this handsome agent showers in abundance towards his love interest. I think receiving a bunch of beautiful pink, velvety roses from Marcus Pike would totally sweep you off your feet and totally convince you to go to Washington DC with him.
Tumblr media
Red poppies are worn as a symbol of support for the Armed Forces community, and to remember our fallen military personnel. The poppy is a common symbol that has been used to represent everything from peace to death, and even simply sleep. Seeing as Frankie worked in the forces, he would probably tuck a red poppy flower behind your ear then kiss you sweetly, as he walks hand-in-hand with you through the local Veteran Day Parade.
Tumblr media
In the language of flowers, wild heliotrope symbolises devotion and an everlasting love, which when you think about Whiskey losing his sweetheart and baby boy, this flower couldn't be more perfect for him. It has a delicious scent and the flowers follow the sun as it tracks across a winters day, hence the name "Heliotrope" which is derived from the Greek Helios meaning sun and tropos meaning 'turn' or 'direction'. Everlasting love is a journey that you rarely falter from the path, so I imagine Whiskey would choose this flower to place on the grave of his sweetheart and baby boy.
Tumblr media
Passion flowers, not only look a little alien in their bloom, they also have healing properties, which Ezra could do with in abundance, right? Roman Catholic priests of the late 1500's named it for the Passion (suffering and death) of Jesus Christ. And Kevva, has this prospector suffered... Passion Flower can incite love and passion and help you attract companionship. A perfect flower to represent my main man Ezra, I think...
Tumblr media
Colourful, fun and a little kooky looking, gerbera daisies are just flowers that make me smile in abundance. And so does Dieter Bravo. Yellow gerbera daisies tend to symbolize cheerfulness and celebration. Orange gerberas convey that the person you present it to is the sunshine of your life. Red gerberas represent an unconscious love or to be fully immersed in love. White gerberas symbolise innocence and purity. Pink gerberas are a symbol of admiration, adoration, or high esteem for someone. I imagine Dieter would love these because he would be attracted to the variety of colours and they would make him smile, even when high...
Tumblr media
Black dahlias aren't truly black, but rather a very deep shade of crimson that appear black. They symbolise betrayal and sadness, so shouldn't be gifted lightly. It also represents inner strength, likely due to the plant's ability to tolerate such harsh conditions. Although a stunning flower to behold, the symbolism doesn't come without it's notoriety; they're associated with the infamous murder of Elizabeth Short (The Black Dahlia Murder) in 1947 in Los Angeles. Black dahlias and Dave York? Nuff' said.
Tumblr media
A flower with a bite, just like Max. A carnivorous plant, this flower eats insects. They have simple nodding flowers and leaves modified as hollow pitchers, which function to passively trap insects, luring them with nectar, then digesting them or drowning them with fluids, later to be absorbed by the plant. So, although it looks pretty and alluring on the outside, beware whats hidden underneath - just like our feisty vampire, Max. Nom.
Tumblr media
Anemones are my most favourite flower. It was believed that the flower sprang from the blood of the slain Adonis, who was a lover of the goddess Aphrodite. As such, anemones are often seen as a symbol of love and passion. And there's no-one more passionate a lover than Javi P, right? Anemone flowers are available in many colors with each symbolizing a different meaning. White anemone flowers symbolize sincerity due to their delicate appearance. Red and pink anemone flowers symbolize death or forsaken love. Purple anemone flowers symbolize protection from evil. I think Javi would be a purple anemone, due to the job he has... he'd definitely protect you.
Tumblr media
With their vibrant orange, yellow and red petals, naturally marigolds are symbols of positive emotions, like joy and excitement. Marigolds also represent energy, good luck, warmth, creativity, prosperity and passion. Oberyn exudes passion in abundance so this flower would be prefect for him. Their vibrant colors and strong fragrance make them an essential part of various traditions, festivals, and rituals worldwide, such as Día de Los Muertos. A perfect flower to represent Oberyn, in both life and death.
Tumblr media
The Ghost Orchid earned its name due to its ghostly white petals and the illusion of floating in mid-air when attached to trees, with no visible roots or leaves. The Ghost Orchid is considered one of the most elusive orchids in existence. Its scarcity and remote habitat have contributed to its mythical status among plant enthusiasts. Due to its unique growth habits and specific environmental requirements, sightings of the Ghost Orchid in the wild are extremely rare. A little like our Mandalorian here in the sense you never see his face, he, like the flower, is elusive and a rare specimen indeed. And when you do get an eventual glimpse of it, it is absolutely breathtaking...
Tumblr media
Holding on to their shape and color long after being cut, strawflowers are said to symbolize immortality and are commonly known as 'Everlasting' flowers. Their endurance and strength is notable and we can compare this to our resident hero of the Pedro Boys, Marcus Moreno. Everlasting flowers symbolize eternal love, hope, and remembrance. They are often used in wedding bouquets, funeral arrangements, and other special occasions to express enduring sentiments and commemorate cherished memories. Considering Marcus is also a widower, this flower is a great choice to represent him.
Tumblr media
The bird of paradise flower symbolizes joyfulness, freedom, anticipation, and excitement. Furthermore, it represents faithfulness, love and thoughtfulness while being the official flower of the ninth wedding anniversary. As someone who is often bogged down in the the dark gloom of investigations, a colourful, peppy flower such as this would brighten Tim's mood instantly after coming home from a long day of work.
Tumblr media
Tiger lilies represent courage, strength, and confidence. The main red tiger lily meaning is passion. White tiger lily meaning can be described as purity. Pero would be of the red variety, considering he wields such strength, courage and confidence on the battlefield. Tiger lilies also have healing properties and the lance leaf tiger lily is native to China. Apt considering Pero fights there...
Tumblr media
Giving someone one of these small blossoms is a pledge that you will never forget them and that you will think of them often. For this reason, they're also considered a symbol of fidelity and faithfulness. Forget-me-nots represent true love and giving someone this flower means you truly love and respect this person. Similarly to making a wish, if Max gifts you with these flowers, he's not likely to forget you in a hurry.
Tumblr media
The most classic of them all, a red rose is a perfect choice for a significant other. This stunning shade most popularly stands for passion and communicates love. It's the rose of romance and deep feelings, but can also relay desire, beauty, victory, harmony, joy, luck, pride and martyrdom. Which if you're familiar with Silva and his traits, this flower is the perfect choice for him.
Tumblr media
A flower that is not very common, Petunias display feelings of deep resentment and anger. Despite their amazingly striking appearance, they take people by surprise because of their shocking underlying meanings. And if you know a thing or two about Veracruz, you know he's just like a Petunia - beautiful on the outside, but sinister and resentful on the inside...

Translation: Barely anyone wrote to Colin as he traveled, but it’s hearing from Penelope that he misses. Because Penelope always took interest in his interests and adventures and she encouraged him to pursue his passions. She made him believe he could be more than what he saw in himself but she also allowed him to confide his insecurities to her and she never wanted him to feel alone. Not having that vital bit of supportive companionship for months while far from his home, family and any familiarity is challenging. It likely played a big part in forcing Colin to grow up a bit and be more self reliant, hence his new swagger and confidence. But coming home to discover that his careless words last season have lost him the one person who he allowed himself to believe would never give up on him, because she really understood and cared for him and supported his dreams, is not easy to accept.
Tumblr media
Penelope has been a constant in Colin’s life and he has taken for granted that all relationships are complex and delicate and he lumped her into a category like family, assuming she would always be there. Colin has never once had to consider just how much he relies on Penelope’s presence in his life or her good opinion of him. He is about to have a come to Jesus moment where he’s honest with himself about the fact that he actually really wants to be worthy of the devotion and admiration she gave him all these years when she looked at him with genuine affection, respect and trust in her eyes.
To get back to that place again, he’s actually going to have to earn it and take an active interest in Penelope which he has not done before that we’ve seen. Thus far, Penelope has been eager for any crumb of Colin’s attention but it’s his turn to be attentive now. He’s about to actually see how Penelope is treated by the ton and by her family and the way it has effected her self esteem and he’s not going to like it because he’s never considered what it’s like for her. He is going to see how she’s disrespected, overlooked and even bullied by nearly everyone in her life and why she is the way she is. Hero complex Colin is going to be positively feral in his love and protectiveness over Penelope. But in this particular moment she just knocked Colin’s world off its axis and all that realization and growth is just about to kick off.
Similarly, Penelope finally recognizing that Colin Bridgerton is just a man and not this perfect gentleman living a fantastical life, capable of sweeping her off her feet and make all her problems go away, is lighting a fire in Penelope to take charge and stop letting anyone else get in the way of her securing a good life for herself. So she’s going to change her wardrobe and perspective because she’s finally fighting for herself and the life she truly wants.
I can’t wait to see how this progresses!

June, 30 (Evening) Devotion
“Ah Lord God, behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee.”
Jeremiah 32:17
At the very time when the Chaldeans surrounded Jerusalem, and when the sword, famine and pestilence had desolated the land, Jeremiah was commanded by God to purchase a field, and have the deed of transfer legally sealed and witnessed. This was a strange purchase for a rational man to make. Prudence could not justify it, for it was buying with scarcely a probability that the person purchasing could ever enjoy the possession. But it was enough for Jeremiah that his God had bidden him, for well he knew that God will be justified of all his children. He reasoned thus: “Ah, Lord God! thou canst make this plot of ground of use to me; thou canst rid this land of these oppressors; thou canst make me yet sit under my vine and my fig-tree in the heritage which I have bought; for thou didst make the heavens and the earth, and there is nothing too hard for thee.” This gave a majesty to the early saints, that they dared to do at God’s command things which carnal reason would condemn. Whether it be a Noah who is to build a ship on dry land, an Abraham who is to offer up his only son, or a Moses who is to despise the treasures of Egypt, or a Joshua who is to besiege Jericho seven days, using no weapons but the blasts of rams’ horns, they all act upon God’s command, contrary to the dictates of carnal reason; and the Lord gives them a rich reward as the result of their obedient faith. Would to God we had in the religion of these modern times a more potent infusion of this heroic faith in God. If we would venture more upon the naked promise of God, we should enter a world of wonders to which as yet we are strangers. Let Jeremiah’s place of confidence be ours—nothing is too hard for the God that created the heavens and the earth.

It makes me so mad when people are like “oh Andrey betrayed Goncharov for money” like . . . that’s such a sad and flat way to look at the narrative . . . it’s obvious that the money is a device to make the Judas-Jesus parallel clear? Andrey, after all, makes of that money just as much as Judas does with the thirty silver coins, i.e. nothing. It’s not about the money, it’s about the misplaced resentment. The money is just a circumstancial occasion to let the frustration and disillusionment bubble to the surface and bring the character to action.
Maybe it’s my catholicism talking but it seemed quite blatant to me that Scorsese was going for the vibe of the interpretation of the Judas story as Judas being Jesus’ most fervent and dedicated follower until he realized that Jesus was not in fact going to do what Judas expected from him (actual revolution/guiding an armed insurrection?) and it was the force of his disappointment and sense of betrayal that brought him to betray Jesus in turn.
Consider that Jesus Christ Superstar premiered in Broadway in 1971?? The musical is focused on that interpretation of Judas’ role in the gospel story. I’ll eat my hat if the screenwriter and director didn’t have that in mind while making Goncharov.
The movie is hardly a story about mafia men betraying each other for mafia reasons. It’s about human beings going through a path of destruction because they’re trapped in toxic dynamics that don’t allow them to pursue healthy interpersonal relationships.
Ironically, Goncharov and Andrey’s feelings for each other by the end of the movie, in their horrifying brutality, are the most genuine and heartfelt feelings that any character shows in the movie for another. It’s like, in their world, the only way passion and devotion can exist is in blood.
Talking about a metaphor for repressed queerness . . .
