Like the thing is that even if the supposed health advice I come across is just about encouraging people to "avoid 'unhealthy' snacks they don't 'really' need" and not about maintaining full blown eating disorders, I still don't condone it. I don't believe in diet culture. I don't believe in restricted eating. I don't believe in the ideology of fatphobia. I don't just think all of the above is a problem when people are actively starving themselves to the point of death. I'm critiquing the entire concept

Whump Prompt #1256
Submitted by Anon - thanks!
TW: starvation | disordered eating
If a character has become accustomed to prolonged under-nourishment, they probably won't be "fine" as soon as they can eat adequately. Of course there's the psychological recovery from whatever experience(s) they had, but also their body may not remember how to deal with normal amounts of food.
A few things they may experience when they start eating more (severe cases can be dangerous and require medical intervention, these are just in the "unpleasant" range):
Poor appetite and rapid/disproportionate satiety
Bad stomach aches
Increased lethargy/fatigue, in general but especially after meals
Suddenly needing a lot more sleep
Dizziness/shakiness/weakness if they haven't eaten for a few hours, even if they don't feel hungry.

the recent surge of articles on severe ME is shattering my heart. we’re looking at a live, ongoing portfolio of the NHS’s failure to protect young ME patients, the same failures that cast a shadow over both my childhood and my current life, and it’s so wild that things aren’t changing. there’s no repair, no apology for the highly preventable suffering or the deaths, which are mostly young women.
the improper care of ME patients isn’t because of a lack of funding, it’s because of ignorance & stubbornness. the bare minimum of appropriate care to prevent a severe ME patient from getting worse is to allow them to be somewhere dark, quiet, lying down, hydrated & fed, and somehow the NHS can’t even provide that. my main shred of hope is that this is finally being reported and i wonder if that will be the catalyst for a little bit of repair. i’m desperate to believe it will be

A game of chess, where whumpees pieces each represent a punishment and whumpers pieces represent a reward.
They loose a pawn, that’s one lash. They capture a pawn, they get warm water for one shower. They loose a rook, a day without food. They capture a rook, they get one hot fulfilling meal.

Just thinking about how in atla season one, you see Zuko shirtless a couple times, and that dude is jacked. Like, every minute he’s not searching for clues and chasing the avatar, he’s eating well and training his body. For a 16 year old, that level of musculature is equally impressive and concerning.
But after that, you don’t see his muscles much until the beach episode all the way to season three, and boy oh boy he couldn’t be any more different. He’s freaking emaciated: he’s skinny, his shoulders are less broad, and you can see his ribs for Pete’s sake.
Sure, some teenage boys just Look Like That, but it’s a huge change that has to be on purpose. During season two, Zuko must have starved so badly. Going from eating properly every day and using that energy to eating almost nothing so suddenly must have been a stark change for his metabolism.
And it’s not like he was less active: he was doing Blue Spirit activities by night riding an ostrich-horse through the desert by day, he might need less calories but there is still a huge deficit between what he needs and what he’s getting.
The entire show doesn’t take place over a large amount of time: a year, at most. Which leads me to the conclusion that Zuko starved so badly that his body started breaking down protein for energy, atrophying his muscles.

more vampire whump brainrot ig
keeping a vampire prisoner with their hands shackled behind them, attached to the wall with a chain. keeping them so starved and desperately hungry that they’re basically feral, lunging and scrambling forward whenever whumper or any human walks by at all —their eyes glowing a bright, hungry red—fangs fully extended and already dripping—
only to hear the deafening *Clang* when the chain is pulled taught, catching whumpee and yanking them back by the shoulders and the neck, sending them careening into the floor face first every time.
and no matter how many times whumper chastised them for it, calls them stupid or an animal or feral or a monster, It happens over and over every single time— whumper probably has some mean comment about how they never learn.

📚🔺🐉💚🍔🤒
All for Silas!
(Still not done sending these 😈)
I'm excited to see more!
📚 BOOKS — What level of education has your oc most recently completed/is currently in (GED, undergraduate, grad school, phd, etc)?
Absolutely none. At all. Ever. At least not "formally" or "officially." He grew up in the Abyss, and there certainly aren't school down there.
Lady Rhoda taught him how to read, write and do math as well history and biology (sex ed at 20 something is better late than never, right?), but he already had steady income, so there was no need for trying "formal" education. He does research things on his own since he doesn't like not knowing things and having that used against him, though.
🔺 RED TRIANGLE POINTED UP — Does your oc know how to use any weapons?
Silas most certainly does! While he mainly uses magic as his weapon, he knows how to use spears, harpoons, knives, and probably swords if you give him one. I feel if guns could actually work under the sea, he'll be able to use one. Also, a fun fact from Silas: seaweed can, in fact, be used to strangle if you use it right.
🐉 DRAGON — What is your oc's favourite mythical creature?
I'd say Sirens from Greek Mythos. He finds them fascinating. It does annoy him that so many think these half bird half women creatures look like merpeople, including the mer people. It's probably the first thing he'll infodump about. Finn has heard his rants about the many misconceptions about Sirens hundreds of times.
🍔 HAMBURGER — Is your oc good at cooking? are they good at baking? which one do they prefer?
Silas is good at cooking! Though he technically can't "cook" anything since they're underwater? But I like to imagine there are heated air vents on his property he can go to cook something, though usually it's just not worth the trip when there are many raw dishes like stuffed crab, seaweed wraps, etc that he can make.
Baking involves cooking in dry heat without exposure to flame, usually in an oven (hah! I learned that in Hospitality), so I guess he could do it in those air pockets and mini volcanoes? But it's far from house and not worth the trip, though maybe he will "bake" on special occasions. He likes it and is good it at it. He prefers cooking, though.
🤒 FACE WITH THERMOMETER — Does your oc get sick easily?
Okie angst time
Hah! Nope! He used to get sick a lot as a child, then (and kinda now too, actually...) he was just sickly because of how malnourished he was. His immune system is something else, truly, as he's been exposed to so many sicknesses and infections it'll leave doctors confounded. It's difficult for him to get sick. Well... though it wasn't necessarily an illness, he gave himself "refeeding syndrome" by trying to make up for what he was lacking when he finally had steady access to food.
Refeeding syndrome is when someone malnourished or starved suddenly begins eating again, and the quick introduction of foods can cause problems and even be fatal. This is why it's best to have the process of healing from starvation overseen by a qualified medical professionals.
Now Silas didn't trust doctors at the time, so he never went to one, but what he did do was simply go back to eating the same amount of food he used to so he didn't keep throwing up and getting sick. Morrigan eventually forced him to go to a hospital. (Silas was horrified when he learned what a feeding tube was)
Tagging: @distant-velleity @kitwasnothere @the-banana-0verlord @cyanide-latte @cynthinesia @jovieinramshackle @skrimpyskimpy for Silas lore hehe

Body count.
Hidden but insidious little piece of fatphobia:
you cannot find a single fucking page on INCREASING your appetite. On coping, struggling with a LOW appetite. Having a lowered appetite. On managing your health when your appetite is low. On how to get yourself to eat and NOURISH MORE. more efficiently, more FREQUENTLY.
By which I don't mean "how to gain weight" but by which I mean how to MAINTAIN A WEIGHT that's healthy for you. or more specifically, how to nourish SUSTAINABLY. over the LONG-term. How make sure you nourish and KEEP nourishing CONSISTENTLY. How to maintain your health in spite of an appetite that is too low.
Hell. even just what it means for your appetite to be low, how to TELL if your appetite is LOWER than is HEALTHY for you. the consequences and problems people face when they have a low appetite. the RISKS and DANGERS of a low appetite.
Because every fucking search result is
how to gain weight (muscle)
how to eat more foods that don't make you gain weight (fat) as fast as other foods
Tragedy Strikes: the Misfortune of Fat & How to Protect Your Precious Soul from Falling Victim to This Cruel Fate😢
how to lose weight (fat) (new fad diet for starvation and you will have a net loss of 0 lbs or less by the time 5 years elapses)
how not to lose weight (muscle)
how to eat less how to fucking starve how to deprive yourself the little things and be miserable and fucking die
if I eat too fast I'll feel nauseous. As a result, I graze over longer stretches throughout the day (er I did, before meds changes slaughtered my appetite).
People were always fucking like "ah! I hear that's better for you anyway😊"
by which they fucking mean "To my understanding, that eating pattern facilitates weight loss a bit more than normal patterns do, therefore it is superior because weight and supremacy are inverse correlates😊"
Nowadays I don't eat that way because my appetite is really fucking low. Today I managed a bowl of oyster crackers, an applesauce, some carrots, a piece of cornbread, a few pepperonis, and a scoop of cookie bake.
Plus x2 cans of Mountain Dew (my usual daily caffeine intake is maybe 1 glass of Coke), because I have to pass this final semester at the expense of my body.
Fuck I did not even realize how jack shit I ate today until I listed that out. With that combination it's really not a wonder that my whole digestive tract has been fucked for like 3 weeks straight now. On top of that I'm not getting ample nourishment, neither in nutrient nor caloric terms.
Low appetite is a problem.
and nobody cares. Nobody cares! Nobody fucking cares. You know why? Because this problem results in weight loss. See high appetite on the other hand, that causes weight gain, so you understand all energies must be allocated toward solving that problem🙂.
Noooo low appetite is a gift! A blessing!!! A privilege!!!!! God I wish that were me!!!!!!!!
How to lower your appetite!! 3 Vitamins that will lower your appetite!! Lower your appetite with these 15 yummy recipes!
6 easy ways to shame yourself for having wants and needs! How to stave off hunger and ignore your body's signaling of needs! How to replace the sound of your body calling you to action with blaring fad diet commercials. How to convert your body's begging for its life into an incessant and intrusive need to self-sabotage instead.
How to dissociate from your body and fixate upon doing the opposite of what it needs to stay alive. How to fret over whether or not you moved enough in the last 24 hours. How to take the energy out of every day to meticulously COUNT every single piece of material you dArE put in your body. How to count your body. How to develop one or more of the MOST DEADLY mental illnesses. How to wind up having the sole variety of mental illness that fucking kills you whether you wanted to die or not
How to tally the body count

Anyone ranking: most likely to starve when left to their own devices?
None of them would starve, I think? So no ranking.
Izuku
Is left to his own devices for months at a time and just takes care of himself. Has no problem feeding himself, especially as his mom is a cook who taught him how to cook good meals.
All for One
When he is alone, he tends to order food and to eat at restaurants. He will cook to relax, but he prefers to do it when someone else will eat with him.
He, however, lost a lot of weight after his brother's death because he didn't like eating anymore.
Kurogiri
Listen, that's an adult man living on his own. He cooks or buys stuff.
Nagisa
Eats a lot of junk food but lives alone so she knows how to take care of herself.
Hawks
Fried chicken restaurant right on his way home. Also, the Commission has a lot of ready meals provided for him.
Probably isn't much of a cook but technically, he knows how to hunt.
Dabi
Okay, the grocery curse is strong with this one. It might actually be difficult for him to get the food.
Shouto
Can eat whatever abomination he cooks so he wouldn't starve. However, setting the kitchen on fire then breaking it after freezing it is a possibility.

Some Wheel of Time thoughts: the way Aes Sedai treat men who can channel is even worse than it looks at first glance. No I’m not kidding.
I will be using severed instead of gentled or stilled in this post, I just think using 1 term is more simple.
So let’s start with some basic 100% true facts: 1. The men who are channeling out in the world are men born with the spark, they cannot help it. 2. Men who can channel will go mad, and 99% of the time end up hurting a lot of people with the power. 3. Even if men who can channel don’t kill other people or themselves with the power, they will inevitably die horribly of necrosis overtaking their bodies. 4. Severing men who can channel stops the madness and necrosis progressing. 5. Severed men become extremely depressed and suicidal, to the point that they almost always eventually starve themselves to death if prevented from committing suicide in a faster way.
The White Tower knows all of these things, as well as what happens to a severed woman.
Second collection of facts for my argument is what (as far as I can tell) The White Tower’s official plan of action for men who can channel is. And it is this this: 1. Find a man who is channeling, probably through an informant’s network. 2. Sisters from the Red Ajah go and capture the man, shielding him and bringing him back to the tower. 3. The man is tried in the court of The White Tower and severed. 4. The man is kept prisoner in the white tower in pretty nice conditions until he finds a way to commit suicide or starves himself to death. (Note: #4 may not be true for all men, I am primarily basing this off of Logain and he is definitely an outlier. But just letting them go is actually pretty much just as bad)
Now up until the source was cleansed, severing men who can channel was actually the best option to deal with the situation. Both for the men and the world. But the way they treat men after gentling is inexcusable given the information they have.
What is this information you may ask? That they know how to help a severed woman with the depression that comes after severing. In The Shadow Rising, after Siuan and Leane are gentled they either think about or discuss (I don’t remember which) that the best way to stave off the depression from severing is to find a new purpose that takes up all of your time and energy. The impression is that this is common knowledge about how to help a severed woman. I think they even mention some severed women being set up with families by the tower to try and keep them alive.
They do not help severed men. Not even a bit of advice like a “oh btw you should try and find a job or task that takes up a lot of your time, it’ll help.” (Assuming they do let most severed men go). And they sure as hell didn’t try to help Logain with the depression when he was being held captive in the tower. They basically just condemned him to a slow death. Like if you aren’t going to help the guy you’re keeping prisoner and who you know is so depressed he’ll eventually starve himself to death just execute him and speed things up.
So it’s not a “oh this is a tragic necessity, so sad these men just invariably die” like some Aes Sedai present it. It’s actually a “oh this is a tragic necessity, but we’re making it WAY worse for these guys because of the Reds”. Did I mention that btw? That this is all because the Ajah in charge of dealing with men who can channel culturally HATES them. Aes Sedai could reduce the harm of severing for men, but they chose not to. Because even within the Aes Sedai there is an incredible amount of fearmongering about, and among the Red hatred for, men who can channel. Even though they all logically know the men can’t help it, that the ones channeling have the spark, they still hold very uninformed-seeming and uncomplicated opinions on them.
I don’t really have a conclusion. I guess I’ll just say that this isn’t a plot hole, just another way the Red Ajah sucks. And that the more you dig into how the white tower works the more you see how it really doesn’t.

The UN has demanded a ceasefire in Gaza, but only a temporary one. The U.S. decided not to use its veto power, instead abstaining from the vote.
In addition to the bullets and bombs, Gaza also faces a dire humanitarian emergency, with a report from an international authority on hunger warning March 18 that “famine is imminent” in northern Gaza and that escalation of the war could push half of the territory’s 2.3 million people to the brink of starvation.
A temporary ceasefire would be better than nothing, but as this report shows, a lasting one is still needed to save tens of thousands of lives.
That report includes the following chart, which shows how many people are predicted to die in the event of a ceasefire, a continuation of the status quo, and an escalation in the hostilities.
Tumblr media
Keep pressuring your politicians, folks. Just because the UN said "ceasefire," that doesn't mean the crisis is over.
