Remember how at the end of The Dragon Reborn, Ishamael wrapped Moiraine in black lightning and she screamed and Ishy hurled her across the room into a column where she lay unconscious for the whole duration of the book's final confrontation and then that was just never mentioned again and she was completely fine ?? Not on my watch 🤨

Okay, so
Simple, three letter, single syllable names are very rare in WoT, except for Andoran commoners
Lan Mandragoran is not an Andoran commoner
Yeah technically it's al'Lan, but the al' part is a title, not really part of his name.
The Malkieri were the last holdouts on using bynames (e.g. Jain Farstrider, Cowin Fairheart), and afaict the only Westlands culture confirmed to do so after the War of the Hundred Years, so clearly the notion of a person's name changing throughout their life was not unknown to them.
Malkier was farther north even than the rest of the Borderlands, and firmly located in the mountains, meaning it was likely cold AF in the winter and probably had a relatively high infant mortality rate.
Lan means "prized" or "beloved" in the Old Tongue
Guys, I think "Lan" is a milk name. Something you call a baby until it's old enough for a real name. Isam has an actual name, so I'd hazard they do it at a year old, but Malkieri culture being what it is, it was probably his mother's right to name him, only el'Leanna was dead, and none of the five men who made it to safety with baby Lan felt like it was their place to do so.

Moiraine being 70 vs 40
(Alright this one took me a minute because corralling my thoughts is a challenge in the best of times.)
To begin with I will admit... I am one of the people who was indifferent towards the age change in the beginning. They're Aes Sedai, they live nice, long lives, and I wasn't like, emotionally attached to a younger, canon-aged Moiraine. It does make her early years more poignant, but I'll touch on that later.
Primed for older Moiraine, the show started and after two seasons I can safely say I am so gung-ho for 70 year old Moiraine I might actually be feral.
Here's why I, personally, think it was an excellent choice: Rosamund Pike is 44 as of writing this, so she visibly fits into the book age. As an audience nobody is really questioning her age - a few show-onlys I watched season 1 with actually remarked on how refreshing it was to see an older female character allowed to just exist and be part of the narrative without trying to sex up and/or grandma-ize the role.
Little Did They Know.
So you've got an audience that's mostly accepting of this character being in her 40s, and then you hit them with "Oh she's 70 and lets explore just how horrific that fact actually is together, it'll be fun!"
It was not fun, it was gutting.
One of my main critiques of the book has always been how we have these long-lived women, powerful women... but we never really take much of a look at the reality of that concept. Nor are we given POV characters who are really old enough to remark on it. Pevara at least thinks about her family, but Cadsuane doesn't give two figs about hers.
And here's the thing... they're Aes Sedai, but they're still human. What happens to them as they get older, but the people who fill their life are the ones aging? How does it feel to watch a mother, a sister, a child, friends, acquaintances, EVERYONE succumb to time in a way you won't for a very long time after?
That has to be impactful and I wanted to see those stories - and the show delivered. Seeing Moiraine with Anvaere? Chilling, horrifying, heartbreaking. Liandrin and her boy? A kick in the teeth. Even Alanna with her family, knowing very well she's probably the oldest one sitting at that table.
The point is, being an Aes Sedai means being powerful and respected, but it also means living through a very specific kind of suffering and trauma. They're basically vampires in terms of lifespan and we should see how that shapes them.
In regards to Moiraine being older and therefore not basically a child during the foretelling, it does change that particular hit... but by no means did the show let the viewers not understand how that moment altered Moiraine's life forever.
Instead of her being sort of an unformed girl hardened and honed by a lifetime of searching for Rand, one who never got much chance to be anything else, we get a woman who was already beginning to build her life, who had achieved the shawl, found love, and was exactly where she wanted to be.
And then all of that is taken from her.
It's devastating to watch the double-barreled whammy of Siuan and Moiraine giggling about being fishwives and walking into what was in many ways their deaths. Because the Moiraine and Siuan they were before walking into that room were gone forever. They would never be able to go back to the women they were before. They never even had a chance to mourn that loss. Moiraine went hunting and Siuan set her sights on the Amyrlin Seat.
I do understand for a lot of people her age is a sticking point, and that is completely fair and valid! It's a change that I fully agree did not need to be made... but by making that change we're given such a stark insight into the lives of older Aes Sedai who are just beginning to experience what it means to outlive everyone they know, watching one by one as cherished friends and family members pass on.
Soon all they have left are the children and grandchildren of those people, fractured mirrors that are just enough of a hint at the original that it must be painful to know them - which explains even further why so many Aes Sedai cut off contact entirely with their families. It's too painful to keep them in their lives.

So pretty early on in The Fires of Heaven, our boy Mat hands a necklace to one of the Maidens to impress her, not realizing that giving a gift like that as a close as a dude can come in Aiel culture to proposing. Which means. This guy. Has not one but TWO accidental proposals under his belt. Incredible writing decision, no notes, RJ really said “I will explore cultural differences by making Matrim Cauthon get accidentally engaged as many times as possible” and that was the best possible choice

One of my headcanons for Moghedien is that her 'goth spider queen' aesthetic was not a post-Dark One choice. She was just always Like That.
Like, imagine rolling up to Fantasy Utopia Wallstreet wanting financial advice, and the firm your at sends you a woman in full on spiderweb print dress with, with black lipstick and eyeliner. And she's just like 'Hi! I'm your new financial adviser! Have you heard how hot the housing market is right now? :3!".

I just realized that Travelling wasn’t lost because all the people who knew how to do that died (though that certainly helped) but because you had to know where you are and where you’re going in order to do it, and the Breaking meant that no one knew where the fuck anything was anymore.
Major cities? Obliterated.
The ocean? Fuck you, there’s a land mass here now, and btw, another sea is now a desert so too bad for all the marine animals there.
That peaceful plain by a river? Oops that’s a mountain now and by the way the river has an island.
How can you figure out where anything is when a whole bunch of cities were just smushed together, a mountain range appeared out of fucking nowhere, and all the rivers and coastlines changed? It’s like trying to find your way with a faulty GPS that keeps changing languages, and all the roads are under construction so all the streets are rerouted in the most confusing ways.
(Which is also probably why all the Sea Folk were so good at navigating by the stars because at least those things stayed in place.)

Nobody asked me but Las Vegas AU where Mat is NOT banned from the casinos but Perrin IS because Mat's luck is uncanny and Perrin unfortunately was with him all evening and kept scratching his beard suspiciously.
Everybody keeps comping stuff for Rand thinking he's an infamous poker player and he's so confused he's just there for the food but also Tam raised his boy polite so he keeps accepting everything.
Nynaeve is outraged and at some point accidentally ends up in the Magic Mike show and knocks out a dancer. Lan and Moiraine are the cops who book her, both living their best LA Noir life about 80 years too late.
Egwene is mad she didn't get invited, boys trip or not. While looking for them she runs into actual mafia princess Elayne and her bodyguard Aviendha. Shenanigans ensue.
Daughter of a casino boss, Faile gets one look at Perrin and decides "Yes please" so she bails him out. This catches the attention of archrivals Berelain & Tuon. More shenanigans ensue.
There's no circus but Valan Luca does live in Siegfried and Roy's old place.

I forgot that there’s a moment early in The Shadow Rising where Berelain looks at Mat when they’re all in the Stone, mutters “too much like me” and goes off to try to seduce Perrin. Incredible. We were deprived of Mat & Berelain as friends who bounce around the Westlands, bringing out the absolute worst in each other and trying to solve problems with gambling, sex, and lying through their teeth. I’d greenlight five seasons of a spin-off on concept alone

More of my eye of the world re-read
Mat getting caught with a noose catch pole and having that be explicitly called out is such great foreshadowing. That boy can’t keep his neck OUT of nooses it seems
Nynaeve is even better than I remember, love her death and Thom as well
Lan is a lot meaner than I remember however lol, he has zero patience for the Emmonds Field boys
Speaking of why Lan has no patience for them, I didn’t catch on my first read of the series but the White Cloak Mat and Rand prank and antagonize was Dain Bornhald, what a coincidence, man is forever cursed to be humiliated and outsmarted by three farm boys rip
Shadar Logoth my beloathed, just- man I still can’t believe how easily Mordreth lured them into that trap lmao, and the hints at Mat snatching the dagger with him gripping it when Mordreth’s first attack and a cut of comment of “well at least I-“ most likely to say at least I managed to snag one piece of treasure before getting cut off by Perrin.
Speaking of Perrin, he really is just as much of a menace as the other two. It’s easy to forget since he’s generally the one keeping them in check but he’s very quick to tease Mat often enough lol
Also man I forgot how scary Morraine was in the beginning.
Ishamael in contrast is no longer scary to me and just funny. Just having the future knowledge that he has literally no idea who the dragon reborn is or literally anything about the three Ta’veren at all so he’s just saying random shit in a spooky tone and seeing what scares them lol
His comment about Rand’s parents being a stallion and breeding mate straight had me cackling
