Zuri's Declassified University Survival Guide

This is a post about survival tips in university (undergraduate), especially if you're an international student living alone in a different country in this circumstance. I will be adding onto this later on if there's something I want to add, so keep an eye out for update reblogs of this I guess.

General Tips:

it's okay to make mistakes. you are here to learn and grow. no one is perfect, especially in the first and second year of their studies. those are mandatory experimental years. you're not expected to get magically mature and perfect when you get to university (or college for you americans). be kind to yourself and analyse your mistakes instead of beating yourself over them.

don't bother too much about your wardrobe. just wear whatever's comfortable. you might think people care but no one does. more than half of the people at campus will be in sweats or pyjamas and if someone IS dressed up, they're probably arts kids or business majors and they're the ones with the least workload (yes i am dissing you guys I've seen your workloads stop lying).

put yourself in uncomfortable social situations. yes i said that. the only reason i somewhat learnt to make small talk and learnt to talk to strangers is because I go to every single social event that I can. it's not necessary to make friends in all of them. just talk to people, exchange contacts, laugh while the event lasts even if you never see them again. this is how you survive in the lonely dorm life. and if you make an actual good friend? amazing! it paid off. even if it didn't you'll probably network and build rapport and have acquaintances from different majors.

if you're an ethnic minority, don't be afraid. I cannot stress this enough. don't be afraid to be there and take up space. you are there because you deserve to be and qualified. sure, it sucks at times because a good amount of people won't interact with you because you're 'different' but the international students will and trust me they're the coolest bunch to be friends with (I have 0 such friends so far). most times you will have to take the initiative to talk and sometimes they won't respond or worse flat out ignore you but don't let that get you down. just don't interact with them again. the world is big. not everyone will like you and accept you. find the ones that will.

eggs and milk are your best friend. a glass of milk everyday and 2 eggs. make that a staple. eggs are also very versatile for recipes. more on that in the recipes section. also yoghurt. a smol cup of yoghurt everyday too and nuts whenever you can buy them.

always have a few pack of instant noodles at home. sometimes you have deadlines or you forgot to cook or need a quick dinner because there's so much to do and you didn't get groceries. always keep them in stock. they're a quick fix for food. I'm not promoting them for frequent dinner but it's better than starving. just eat the noodles man. there's already so much shit to keep track of just eat the damn noodles.

incorporate veggies into everything food. they're good for you. if you're like me and don't like veggies, experiment with different recipes and find the one you like best. one good way is fried rice or rice with mushrooms, veggies, and meat in the rice cooker (I don't own a rice cooker when I'm writing this). just eat your veggies and thank me later. if you don't wanna cut them up, get a pack of frozen veggies. it's better than nothing. baby steps.

meal plan. if I don't plan my entire week's food on sunday night, I do it the night before for the next day. eat out as less as you can. homemade is better even if you're a horrible cook. practice makes perfect and you'll be grateful for learning a few basic cooking skills along with your degree later on. cooking your own food also gives you the liberty to add more veggies or save money.

treat yourself to stuff sometimes. yes you deserve it even if you don't meet your goals. you're trying. be kind to yourself. get that boba.

study everything done the week by that week's weekend. do the day's content that same day and don't lag behind. utilise reading week and read. don't slack off please I'm begging you. I'll even get on my knees if I have to.

you're gonna miss home and it sucks. yes you will be having your fourth mental breakdown of the week on a wednesday night and you will be alone or hiding under the blanket as your roommate is asleep. you're gonna have to tough it out soldier. I see you and I feel you. it gets easier with time and when you're doing better, you'll feel relieved for toughing through. it's so lonely sometimes and it sucks but it's worth the pain. don't lose hope.

seniors are your friends. they will give you forbidden knowledge for free. from hidden places with good food or convenience things or just life advice exclusive to your institute, they have it all. they're also generally very friendly so don't be afraid to interact with them.

annoy the living hell out of your professor during office hours if need be and utilise the student help room for help. your tutors will be happy to help you so don't be shy to ask for help. they will appreciate you coming to them, trust me. as for your professor, they're lonely people. go to office hours if you need to, chat, ask them what you need. they'll appreciate your presence and happily help you.

the security guards and cleaning staff will be witnesses to your worst states (freshly out of bed or haven't showered in 2 days) but they don't care. they're just happy to be of service and have you around. be kind to them. greet them whenever you pass by.

sometimes coffee is bad.

if your classes start at noon or later, get an hour of exercise in the morning at around 8 or 9 am. the serotonin that will hit you will be unreal. trust me.

make local friends. they're cool people and friendly and very helpful and accommodating. I may be biased but it's true.

being a student helper, student tutor, or a research assistant looks good on your resume and helps you win more scholarships.

put headphones on when in public if you don't want to end up talking to someone you might bump into. it works.

your body also has rights. treat it with care. don't abuse it. nourish it. you should take care of your body like you would a loved one. feed it good things, clean it everyday, and so on. when you feel good by taking care of yourself, you still do better and feel more confident. wash your hair with a set schedule and use good products.

make your wardrobe easier. hang your usual shirts and maybe wear the one in front each day, the previous day's being hung in the back or in the laundry basket. it saves time.

there's no shame in not having stuff. I still don't own a proper laundry basket it all goes into an IKEA bag. you live in a dorm, not a house. sometimes not having every single kind of furniture or accessory isn't bad. don't compare your setup to others. if it's convenient, clean, and homey, it's good. you don't need those expensive lights or those expensive posters to make it seem cool. what you have and what you may collect among the way is enough.

notes on paper are better than laptop or ipad

take breaks. be kind to yourself. it is you for yourself. treat yourself with love.

manage your time by designating time blocks to a certain task. it might not always work but it will help create some discipline in the routine.

having a set everyday routine helps. you don't have to think what to do, thus saving you brain power.

use a semester planner for deadlines and important information. it's useful. I highly recommend. I also have a template if anyone wants.

write down your thoughts, what's bothering you, your feelings, everything on a piece of paper or journal at the end of the day. it'll help process your emotions and you won't have to let the thoughts and emotions fester inside you, slowly simmering and coming to a boil. remember, you are your best friend.

Recipes to help you stay afloat (they're all quick and easy dw):

right off the bat I want to say boiled jasmine rice with sunny side up eggs. you drizzle a pinch of salt onto the yolk, break it over the rice, mix it with the rice and eat it and it's just *chef's kiss*. definitely a comfort food and a very easy quick dinner.

a lot of these I found while scrolling through instagram and some are from when I was trying to lose weight. hope they're helpful!

So I saw the Mario Movie today, and it was high-key average, but low-key fire!

(SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!)

1. Mario was the SWEETEST, when he literally was drop kicked by Peach in the beginning, but overall he was a bit of a generic hero (but then again are we surprised?) He wasn’t a jerk to his brother, in fact he was much better to him

2. Peach was a Queen! Enough said, she bounced off of Mario and Toad really well (Anya did us justice!) She was amazing 10/10

3. LUIGI MY HUSBAND MY BOY IS SO SMOL! But legit, he was so sweet, AND MARIO WAS PROTECTIVE OF HIM AND UGGHH! Wish my bros were like that (jk jk they are) Luigi was underutilised but they did kinda make u for it in the end with the Superstar powerup so yeah, I left pretty satisfied with it.

4.Not much to say on Toad, other than I’m glad he didn’t scream as much - Kegan Michael Kee did great

5. Same for Donkey Kong, not a lot, but less annoying other than his introduction - it was funny tho, well done Seth Rogen

6. BOWSER. BOWSER. HIS MUSICAL NUMBER. Peachespeachespeachespeaches- Jack Black was amazing (altho he is amazing in anything) loved him, generic but I loved him

Bonus: This hug completed my life

In terms of world building, it was cool too, i mean they had a whole diorama in the mushroom council and it was so cute, the penguins at the beginning were everything. Kong City was cool as well - the Dark lands were elite, just everything was cool.

Also this: i was screaming internally

edit: The only really big issue I had with this film tho was its pacing. The places where they could’ve slowed down, they didn’t - that small snippet of Luigi in the hot-air balloon and we got that flashback to when they were babies was good. Maybe if they fleshed out/spent a little more time on when DK and Mario were trapped in that fish (i forget it has a name), and they were just projecting their daddy issues on each other - we could’ve spent more time on that.

Overall tho, it was a pretty generic story for an animated movie targeted at kids, but enjoyable enough to bear with it, so imma rate a solid 6/10

So following up on the babyfication ask i sent, i’m now going to brainrot about the baby fish

Chubby baby boi Azul I would absolutely cuddle if able and tell him he’s beautiful but also give him space if he needs but also be there if he needs me and also since they are smol I will try to carry them

Baby Floyd would probably be either worse or better than his older self and I would encourage the chaos and also cuddle him and let him squeeze me and i’d be in shallow water so that they can swim and also have me nearby and also stop them from maybe trying to eat him

Baby Jade would be the calmest but probably planning something and maybe the one to help me separate Azul and Floyd if they fight and he could be my lil helper in the kitchen and also help me make tea and i’d give him so many cuddles too

Baby azul will just hold onto you and never let go. This human loves him and gives him all the attention and love?? Must stay with them forever. Maybe if you’re worried about him getting dry, you can carry him in a small octo pot, and show him around. Wipe his tears away when he’s sad. oh! What about get those water friendly chalk colors? You can change colors of the water and watch him be happy.

Baby Floyd is even more energetic than before. What’s this? Land and a human? Let me nibble on them…make sure you have bandaids nearby. He’ll swim around you and try and make you catch him. He’ll try shows out for the first time and his tiny feet can barely move his usually shoe size but you have to get a picture. 🥺

Baby jade has that smile on his face…the smile you know that he’s planning something. But don’t worry, it’s not against you…most likely. Buy him a giant mushroom plush with toy and he’ll love you forever. Cook with him next to you, and watch his eyes spark at this new dish that he’s going to love.

At the end of the day, they all fall asleep on you. Worn out from the play and content, a part of them will always remember this day and be warm.

Now Convert 💜 Anonie, what are you gonna to do when they suddenly go “poof” and are back to their regular forms 👀

So, I was inspired by your little polymer clay creations~ i bought a bit of sculpey and some tools and decided to try my hand at it. I eventually want to make my own dnd minis! Unfortunately, I had the oven a tad too high and my first small test mushroom may have burned? It smells awful :c lesson learned: check the temperature before you bake them

Oh NO!!! As I was reading this (before i got to the smol disaster bit) I was like 'oh man, I hope they don't overbake it' because that's a common thing that happens when you first make polymer clay sculptures. Hope you aired out the room and oven afterwards because those fumes are not nice...

It could well have been because your oven temp was too hot (I always go a little under the suggested temp - around 120 C for 15 mins), and it could also have been that your pieces were pretty small and too close to the heat element. I recommend placing the tray on the lowest rung of the oven, baking them on a sheet of baking parchment (so you don't mix polymer clay and food baking trays) and covering small or delicate pieces lightly with a layer of foil (or one of those foil baking trays) to help protect them from cronchifying and catching.

CosClay is also really cool because it stays flexible after baking, so if you've got a cape or some fingies or hair that's a bit fragile, make it with CosClay, and you can apparently bake them together (uncured sculpey and uncured cosclay) but I have yet to try that (I think cosclay needs a bit longer though??). I know that Ace of Clay on the YouTubes has done it successfully.

Don't be disheartened though! You can always bake for a few mins longer at a lower temperature, and even a heat gun will cure small and delicate bits, which you can then just superglue onto a cured sculpture.

If you have a chonky shape you want to sculpt, definitely use aluminium foil to bulk it out, both to save money (polymer clay is expensive!!) and because it won't bake properly if it's solid clay all the way through.

To get rid of fingerprints, you can lightly brush your sculpture with some baby oil before you bake it :)

Hey so one time I came up with the idea of acorn frogs, as well as mushroom slugs, and I have a little piece of paper for each of them with some drawings and explanations, but I'm visiting my grandparents at the moment, so I can't go take pictures. I want to explain the acorn frog one though, because talking about the potential reproductive systems of hypothetical photosynthetic Vulcans (I made a post about that) reminded me of it? (I'll try to keep this one slightly less wordy)

Maybe when I get home I can go take pictures of the papers.

(Nerdy explanation and theorization follows:)

So the idea was that frogs would grow inside acorns on trees, as if the acorns were little eggs, and they'd be slightly translucent such that you could see the developing frog inside.

While the frog was developing, its spine would fuse to the inner acorn shell, like how turtles work, and when it was fully developed, it would kick through the smooth egglike part of the acorn, like a butterfly escaping its cocoon, or a chick breaking out of its egg. The violent actions would also snap the stem from the branch, causing the acorn frog to fall to the ground.

It would look a bit like a turtle, except that it would be a smol frog with biiig eyes and an acorn shell on its back

Never quite figured out how that would end up turning into a tree. Maybe it IS a seed still, and when it dies its acorn genes reactivate and it gets an afterlife of becoming a tree, although it has only as much chance of achieving this as any regular acorn, and possibly less since things might think they're yummy while in all the stages of being a frog. Fortunately the old acorn frog trees go through many generations of creating acorn frogs, just like normal trees.

Now I just have to somehow connect this idea to the photosynthetic Vulcans one from earlier :)

(feel free to disregard this theorization if you prefer the whole "normal" pon farr thing)

Edit: Alright I've read back through this and noticed that I used "shell" to describe both parts of the acorn, which got confusing. After some research it was revealed that the scaley cap of the acorn (the part with a stem where it breaks off from the branch) is called the cupule, while the smooth egglike fruit wall (the rest of the visible acorn) is called the pericarp. To clear up my intentions, I'm going to go edit and replace all the following times I said "shell" with either cupule (scaley cap) or pericarp (smooth egg shaped part)

How about, once every seven years ;) the Vulcans start (asexually) growing 1-4 little acorns branching off of various places on their upper arms and legs. (At this point, it is harmless to snap off the acorns if the Vulcan doesn't want babies.) Different growth locations are superstitiously presumed to suggest different things about the future of the growing Vulcan, and it is common to tie colorful protective slings around the acorn to prevent jostling or premature dislocation.

The growth environment of these acorns is what makes them not exact clones, because lack of genetic diversity is boring and also dangerous. There are also various superstitions about what herb/mineral salves to put on the acorn's pericarp in hopes of different future personality traits, physical traits, etc. (It's believed that the salves might be able to soak through the pericarp and cause chemical changes.)

Since the pericarp is slightly translucent, you can check on the growth progress of your developing baby Vulcan. They recieve nutrients through what is effectively an umbilical cord, which goes through the stem of the acorn (through the cupule) into the arm/leg of the parent, and connects parent to offspring in a somewhat similar way as with humans.

These acorns only reach roughly the size of oranges before the baby Vulcan(s) will start kicking through the pericarp. Once free, the baby will maneuver itself around so as to cling to the arm or leg of the parent, snapping the stem of the cupule in the process (and therefore severing the direct connection to the parent). The parent Vulcan can safely pick up, hold, and relocate the baby Vulcan as soon as this happens. The cupule of the acorn clings to the baby's back as protection for a period of a few months, like how baby humans retain a piece of the umbilical cord, except more useful (this "useful" point is arguable, not only because there are no longer dangers, but also because without it, the baby Vulcan would have camouflage against their parent, and with it, a potential predator can see exactly where to grab/bite. However in current times it would protect them from any potential falls or bumps, and sort of looks cute). The baby Vulcan is blind and deaf and useless for a while, and will cling to the body of the parent with limited (but some) movement, like a baby sloth. Also its foliage is a lot fluffier and softer everywhere than that of the adults (hehe chubby baby) and probably a bit paler too, more like lamb's ear than oak leaves or the small scale-like leaves of various coniferous trees. The parent will typically end up decorating the cupule somehow now that the whole surface is accessible for painting (possibly tied to more superstitions about ritual patterns, I got that idea from a post about Cardassian eggs which I can't remember). The eventual breaking off of the cupule is a much celebrated milestone, and the baby Vulcan will also have gained quite a bit more sight, hearing, mobility, and size by this time. The cupule is usually saved. (The parent might need to continually pick up the baby and put it back on their arm or somewhere, because the babies don't know that it's very annoying and unhelpful to have a baby climbing on your face or hands. Maybe they have to put them in slings for sleep and to stop them from climbing around distractingly)

The baby Vulcan(s) (1 to 4 of them) will continue growing, developing, gaining senses and mobility, and climbing around the parent for at least another month after they lose their shells. They'll start climbing down to the feet of their parent to attempt to walk (crawl) around on their own, and generally have more success with that than human babies since they already have so much practice climbing.

Eventually the baby Vulcans will be able to do stuff on their own. They don't technically HAVE to climb around their parent once they've broken out of the pericarp and snapped the stem, so they could be left in the quarters, but the parent would probably like to let the babies cling to them, at least while they're still small.

The one problem with this is that Vulcans aren't sloths, and don't need to have a climbing instinct, so maybe I've gone about this wrong.

Or they'd just end up being really good cuddlers.

And they secretly want to climb the walls all the time.

And probably could (except that it would be illogical)
