Not Worth It | Garfield Logan

Summary: You had the extraordinary gift of healing, but sadly it came with a price. A price that Gar thinks is not worth it.

“I told you it wasn’t a good idea.”

You could practically feel Gar’s smirk on you as you replaced the old bandages that were wrapped around his abdomen with new ones. You couldn’t deny that your eyes lingered on his bare upper body longer than you intended to, but you couldn’t help yourself, he definitely gained some muscle over the past three months. His training with Dick and Jason paid off, you could say that.

“Well, how come Jason can do it but I can’t?” Gar asked, turning his head so that he could face you, seeing that you were cleaning up the medical supplies that you had out. “Because before Dick, Jason has been training with Batman, probably for months, or years—I don’t know.” You shrugged, picking up Gar’s green shirt that was discarded onto the floor and handed it him, your fingers accidentally grazing his toned torso, blush appearing on both of your faces. “And you’ve only been training for three months.”

“But I’m improving everyday.” Gar pointed out, causing you to nod your head in agreement. “Yeah, I know. Sometimes I feel like you overwork yourself. You should take a day off from training.”

“I can’t.” Gar sighed, shaking his head. “We have to be prepared, so that whenever Dick needs us we’ll be ready.”

You watched as Gar slipped his shirt back on, immediately noticing him wince and the pained expression on his expression. “It would’ve been a lot easier if you just let me heal you.”

“No, absolutely not.” Gar shook his head, shifting his body around to where he was fully facing you. “I don’t want you wasting your powers on me, especially when it’s just a minor bruise.” You couldn’t help but smile at the caring tone in Gar’s voice as he spoke. Your power was healing, you could heal any type of injury, ranging from just a paper cut to a bullet wound. Yes, it was very useful but every time you used your powers it practically drained your energy and Gar hated that because whenever that happens you look almost dead. Your skin would become pale, your eyes would be droopy, and your breathing would be weak. “Not again.”

After the whole Trigon situation Gar had a few fractured ribs, a broken nose, a couple blood clots from the deadly beating he received from the others, and you couldn’t forget the major gashs he got when Dick threw him against a glass bookshelf. When you healed all of his injuries, you were bedridden for two days, almost three.

“But that wasn’t just a minor bruise.” You reminded him, referring back to what happened three months ago. “You could’ve died-”

“And you almosted died healing me!” Your eyes widened at the sudden change of volume in Gar’s voice. He never raised his voice towards you, ever. “Don’t risk your own life for someone else, that’s just stupid.”

“Isn’t that what we’ve been doing this whole time?” You scoffed, rolling your eyes at him. “When we decided to leave Chief’s Mansion to follow Rachel and the others. Isn’t that what we’re doing right now? You’re training to fight, for fuck’s sake.” Your own voice raising, your tone filled with anger and frustration. “At least I’m using my powers for good, and not evil.”

“So, me learning how to defend myself is considered evil then?” Gar questioned, his eyes glaring at you as you just shook your head, groaning loudly and running your fingers through your hair.

“I don’t understand, Gar!” You sighed, “You don’t seem to mind Rachel or Jason risking their lives everyday. Why do you have so much trouble accepting the fact that I’m a part of this too? I’m not-”

“Because it’s you!” Gar snapped, cutting you off. His eyes flashing bright green, your heart stopping at the sight of it. You knew when his eyes turned green and he wasn’t trying shift that it usually means he’s furious.

“Oh,” your irritated tone immediately dropped and your eyes filling with guilt. An awkward silence was then formed between you two, and you swore Gar could hear your heart beating hard against your chest. “Listen, Gar. I’m sorry-” you tried to apologize but he stood up before you could, scoffing and making his way towards the exit of the training room. “Just forget it, dinner’s going to be ready soon.” He said before fully stepping out the room and leaving you alone.

“Hey.” The sound of your sudden voice startled Gar, making him tear his eyes away from the large computer screen and swing his chair around to see you standing in the doorway with a small frown on your lips. “Hey.” He only mumbled back before returning his attention back to the screen in front of him that was displaying the blueprint of the entire city of San Francisco.

Sighing, you slowly walked over and leaned yourself against the counter, your heart aching in your chest when you noticed Gar was purposely refusing to meet your eyes. “Can we please talk?”

“I’m busy right now.” He replied, typing a few things on the keyboard. “Dick asked me to keep a lookout for Dr. Light, so I’m doing that.” He nodded his head towards the screen.

“Okay,” you softly nodded your head. “But do you think it doesn’t hurt me watching you train everyday, practically exhausting yourself and knowing that the whole reason you’re doing this is so that you can fight against people who want us dead. It terrifies me that what if one day I hear from Dick or Rachel that you didn’t make it. That you were killed.” Your voice raising, tears swelling up in your eyes. “But do you know why I haven’t told you about any of it? How I truly feel about you doing all of this? It’s because I trust you, Gar. Do you trust me?”

When Gar didn’t answer, you stood up from the counter and began to make your way towards the doorway. But the feeling of his hand grabbing yours caused you to stop, making your heart flutter. “Do you remember what I promised you when Chief first brought you to the mansion.”

You nodded your head, smiling at the memory. “You said that you wouldn’t let anything happen to me.”

“I haven’t been keeping that promise lately.” Gar pointed out, making you frown and stare at him confusingly. “First it was with that family, then the asylum, and Rachel’s father. But you still managed to come out of all those situations,�� he paused, a small hint of blush forming on his cheeks. “Perfect.”

“But after you healed me, you looked almost dead.” He added, “And that terrified me. Because even though you got the shit beaten out of you by that family, tortured at the asylum, and possessed by Trigon. The most you’ve ever looked in pain was after helping me. It’s my fault that you were even in that condition.”

“Everything that you’ve been going through is because me.” Gar stated, pointing his thumb at himself. “You would’ve been so much safer if you stayed back at the mansion with Rita and the others, but of course I was stupid enough-”

“Hey,” you cupped his face into your hands, cutting him off and making his eyes meet yours. “You didn’t make me go with you, I made that decision myself. Do you know why?” Gar shook his head. “Because I can’t stand being away from you, Garfield Logan.”

“You are the most important person in my entire life.” And with a sudden burst of confidence flowing through body, you leaned down and pressed your lips softly against his.

Gar didn’t hesitate before kissing you back, his hands landing on your waist and pulling you onto his lap, your lips never leaving his. Your fingers would run through Gar’s soft green hair as your lips moved perfectly in sync with his, heat forming on your cheeks when feeling him squeeze your waist. “You’re so handsome.” He mumbled against your lips, smiling at the sound of your small giggle.

“And you sir, are very attractive.” You pulled your lips away from his, smirking when sliding your hands down from his hair and onto his biceps, giving them a firm squeeze. “Shouldn’t you get back to surveying the city?” You asked, nodding your head towards the black screen.

“Nah, it can wait.” Gar chuckled before pressing his lips back onto yours, both of you smiling into the passionate kiss.

NKotR overanalysis masterpost time. These range from things that I've been pondering for a year and a half to things that occurred to me like a couple months ago, and a lot of it is just spitballing that's not meant to be taken completely seriously, but bear with me here

I've said this before but it bears repeating: I think the in-universe new kids have much smaller social circles than irl. Consider how many of their irl friends and relatives play antagonists or characters with little connection to them. It's not like they're completely antisocial or resistant to making new friends (they even try to be civil with Spencer at first) but at the end of the day they ~only have each other~ (tm) in a way that's definitely not the case for their irl counterparts.

Unless Neil is the son of the president (which I wrote into CF2kAI but which I hardly see being the case in canon) then we don't know what his in-fiction family is like. He seems rather spoiled and self-centered, which is kind of an only child vibe (I say this as an only child myself) so his family is probably smaller overall than irl too. It's unclear whether he has any other friends. That said, Neil seems fairly content in his relative solitude-- exemplified in his introductory scene, where he needs repeated prompting to stop watching tv and eating cereal by himself and go hang out with his friends.

From Kevin's introductory scene we know he at least hangs out with other people on a regular basis and is or was on a football team (which apparently won the super bowl, love that for him!) He also seems to be the most well-adjusted person overall. But his remark in episode 2 that an exploding clown represents his mother suggests that his mother is dead or otherwise left his life in a sudden and traumatic manner. His remark in episode 4 that Old Man Cooper "busting [their] chops" is "an old man thing" implies a familiarity with the elderly, suggesting he could have been raised by grandparents or other older relatives. The girlfriend mentioned in episode 2 never comes up again, so she may well have left him after finding out about his date with Wendy.

Finally, the fact that Neil knows more about Ryan's family than Ryan himself does actually makes sense if you consider that them all being "completely insane" probably means they were institutionalized. Ryan appears to live alone (despite having two beds in his room) and not have many friends but have the desire to attain them, based on him talking to a painting in his introductory scene. The un-narrated blurb about him in the book from Ryan's Christmas Wish states "he'd spend winters in a secret chamber, emerging only at dawn to crow at the rising sun"-- a very animalistic habit, suggesting he may have been a feral child raised by wildlife. This could also be why he stands out as so strange compared to other humans.

Other thoughts:

We see Neil acting out a Potter Puppet Pals skit in episode 3, but it's unclear if it's actually intended to be posted online, and none of the songs he sings in NKotR are diegetic, so there's nothing to indicate he has a musical career either. If I had to guess I'd say he has all the same talents as his irl counterpart, but less of an audience. Since in this universe filmmaking is, in his own words, what they do for a living, they might have less time to pursue other things

Although Ryan's claim of having "raised" Kevin is dubious given that they're the same age, Ryan telling Neil that "Kevin is filled with bad ideas" does suggest that those two knew each other for a while before befriending Neil

(That said, Ryan's back breaking when Neil steps on a crack in Unlucked does posit him as something of a "mom friend", albeit in an unconventional way)

On that note, I think Kevin and Ryan had previously met Frosty and told Neil about it but Neil had never actually seen him before, hence his reaction

It seems like they make webisodes at a much faster rate in-universe than NKotR episodes came out irl (possibly on a weekly basis?) and not all of them are comedic. From the glimpse of webisode production we get in episode 6 they really don't seem like such great actors, so you have to wonder why they're so popular... unless you assume this series is set in the same universe as Hollywood East!, in which motion pictures were apparently a brand-new invention in 2008. Then it absolutely tracks that this is the best cinema anyone in Plymouth has seen.

It's also implied that their show is wildly successful and they even got a bestselling line of action figures. With this in mind, I doubt the in-universe Hollywood East collapsed the same way it did irl... however, Mitch's sardonic "make any nickelodeons lately?" in Computer Fighters implies that they'd stopped making webisodes in-universe by that point. If anything, the new kids' criminal record may have caught up with them and landed them out of a job

Speaking of being out of a job, it's so funny in "Money Dollar Bills" when Neil says he doesn't have to work, "or go to school". Like dude what happened to finishing your aeronautical engineering degree? I figure either he was only a few days away from getting the degree when he ran out of funds and had to drop out, or (much funnier and more fitting) he went back to university for a week tops, saw Ryan and Kevin having fun without him, and was like ugh I don't wanna go to school >:/ and bribed the department into giving him a diploma

(This is a little self-indulgent but since they have so little money at the start of that storyline and we see Ryan cooking breakfast for all of them I think mayyybe at that point they're all living at their clubhouse together. Found family type of deal!)

We know from one of the headlines scrolling past in the news report segment of Ryan's Christmas Wish, as well as a scrapped ending text crawl for The Money Tree, that Ernest P. Worrell exists as a living human in the NKotR universe. I think he's like a local celebrity who the new kids have maybe met once or twice and they look up to him a lot but they're not really close or anything

Ryan immediately turning on Spencer over onion rings is especially funny when you consider that a couple episodes prior he was the one getting put down for his unorthodox food choices, but if you want to step into the woobification zone for a minute you could say that's exactly why it sets Ryan off... like maybe he sees too much of himself in Spencer in that moment and is like oh no this is why my friends don't always like me, it's because I get sherbert instead of normal ice cream... I need to cut out this part of myself by cutting ties with Spencer. COMPLETELY missing everything that sets him apart from Spencer, and that his friends do like him actually

Important to note that not only is Neil the only one who firmly believes spooky manor is haunted the whole time, he's also the one to announce that Kevin "went on a date with a dead girl" when Wendy's mom claims her daughter is dead. Yes Neil is a man of science but, crucially, he also unequivocally believes in the supernatural

On that note though, since Kevin is such a skeptic about ghosts in episode 4, what did he think was going on with Wendy? Also, you've gotta wonder if he thought he was going to see her again when he died (particularly if he was also hanging around as a ghost for a bit) and was disappointed when he didn't. ALSO gotta wonder if he attained a working proton pack before or after dying... lots of thoughts about death & ghosts or lack thereof

Maybe this is my imagination but the new kids seem to treat each other nicer or at least get more used to each other in the later installments compared to the original run of episodes. In particular, it seems like Neil and Kevin go from being weirded out by Ryan's eccentricities to barely batting an eye at them. And that's what I call character growth... or something

2017 ANNUAL FAVORITES

Any media that was widely released in the calendar year 2017, that I consumed in the calendar year 2017, was eligible.

Author’s Note: So here we are at the end of August 2018, and here I am finally posting my Annual Favorites list for 2017. I once again (see 2016) held out on posting in order to finish the blurbs, and I once again let time slip past me. So here I am, once again, vowing to do better this year. I want to clarify that I ranked this list in December 2017, and have not altered it in any way since then (although, as with every year, there are small changes I would make in hindsight.) There is also, as with every year, great media from 2017 that I’m just discovering now in 2018. I’ve left the few blurbs that I did complete untouched, and presented the rest of the list without comment. As always - thank you for reading. I’m hoping to make 2018 something special for you.

10. Blade Runner 2049

My favorite thing about Blade Runner 2049 is that it finally got me to watch Blade Runner, a film that is atmospheric and gorgeous without equal, and also somehow becomes a horror film in it’s final act, which I love. My second favorite thing about Blade Runner 2049 is how it refutes the dangerous “Chosen One” narrative that has covered literally all of pop culture since Harry Potter reached the zeitgeist in the ‘90’s. The film not only refutes it, but also manipulates your expectations to reveal to you how you feel about the concept as a whole. My third favorite thing about Blade Runner 2049 is Robin Wright as the police chief. My fourth favorite thing is Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford punching each other with those big, goofy Indiana Jones sound effects.

The Golden Circle is a dense, ridiculous, perfect sequel, with a lot going on thematically and even more going on at any given moment onscreen.

5. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is a film that, beat for beat, makes perfect sense on a thematic level. Diana Prince wants to help people that can’t help themselves, and she thinks that fighting evil will achieve that goal. The way the film, over it’s slow burn of two plus hours, challenges and develops her viewpoint are all intrinsically tied in to what we know her character to be. It works so well on a thematic level that when the film’s villian goes from an interesting concept to a horrible Xbox 360 cutscene, it doesn’t even matter, because it makes sense on a thematic level and you’re locked in along for the ride. The slow burn doesn’t matter either, because by the time it pays off halfway through with that watershed moment of the No Man’s Land scene, it has actually earned all the righteous heroism it revels in. In that sense, it’s the superhero film we needed in 2017 - a modern update to Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman: The Movie. That’s failing to mention the many, many other great things about this film: the incredible opening act fight scene, a fully awake dreamboat Chris Pines, an amazing colourscape that feels like Moana came to life, and Patty Jenkin’s relevatory genre shooting style that doesn’t oogle heroines even as it idolizes them. The fact that it felt so wrong when Wonder Woman showed up later this year in Justice League with leering camera angles and sexualized outfits is a testament to how Patty Jenkins changed the cultural landscape with this film, and let’s hope it’s just the first through the door, leading the way for an onslaught of female-directed genre films.

Baby Driver has its peaks and valleys - it’s certainly more flawed than films lower than it on this list, but it also occupied more of my headspace and influenced the art I created more than anything else in any medium this year, so for that reason alone it’s status is cemented on this list. And good golly, that soundtrack.

2017 was a supreme year for music, anchored by one of the best sonic summers in decades. This was my hardest list, by far, to get down to a top ten. There are about twenty others that it’s unacceptable I didn’t have the space to acknowledge here. This probably should’ve been a top fifty list.

As the present got bleaker, Vince Staple’s futuristic world got starker. His imagery remains what seperates him from the pack: on “745,” he admits “Your eyes can’t hide your hate for me/Maybe you was made for the Maybelline/Spent so much tryna park the car/Barely got a tip for the maître d’.”

1. Melodrama - Lorde

Following up Pure Heroine took Lorde four years, but in retrospect, it’s amazing it only took that long. Pure Heroine was a debut record so new, so focused, so singular, that it felt like it existed in it’s own dimension - nothing had come before or after it, it just took its rightful place in the universe. Melodrama isn’t as cohesive or shiny as Heroine - there are now acoustic songs, hip-hop interludes, short reprises, and a lead single (“Green Light”) whose verses and chorus seem like completely different songs Frankenstiened together. It’s harder to digest, but its ultimately more satisfying - you can feel that every second of it has been perfected to take you through the emotional journey that it offers.

Much of Heroine was about searching for a genuine love in our modern day, and falling into it for the first time. Melodrama is about being out of love for the first time. It’s a loose concept record that follows Lorde through one single party, after her first real break-up, and we get to move through all the steps of trying to move forward she runs through. “Green Light” is a desperate plea to move on disguised as a dance song, “Liability” finds her blaming herself, “Writer in the Dark” has her calling on her mother’s advice for help. Even as the musical styles change more than we’re used to, Lorde’s lyrics remain engaging throughout. She’s outdone herself with some amazing writing on Melodrama - I anticipated putting some quotes in here, but couldn’t narrow down which ones I wanted to pick. Certainly no other pop star in 2017 - and honestly, maybe no one other than Vince Staples - filled a party banger like “Homemade Dynamite” with the crystal-clear imagery of “I’d get your friend to drive but he can hardly see/We’ll end up painted on the road/Red and chrome/All the broken glass sparkling/I guess we’re partying.” Every single song is filled with these sort of standout moments.

In the end, even with its lofty storyline and diverse range of musical influences, Melodrama wouldn’t work if the songs didn’t stand up. And boy, do the songs ever stand up. “Supercut” gives us the best modern metaphor for nostalgia about a relationship. It’s an anthem that refuses to stop building, a fever pitch techno ballad that starts at 11 and then turns it up to 20, all just to break your heart. “The Lourve” is the ultimate summer love soundtrack, a track tailor-made for playing over the end of an O.C. episode fifteen years ago. It’s lush verses get anchored by the hypnotic chorus (the way Lorde draws out “A ru-u-ush at the beginning” lingered in my head for months.) Is there a better description for young love than “Burn all my friendships/To sit in hell with you”? And everything ends with “Perfect Places,” the poppiest and most succinct song on the record, that finally allows us to feel some acceptance in the middle of this mess. “I’m nineteen and I’m on fire,” Lorde spits out, “but when we’re dancing, I’m alright.” In the same way that teenage rebellion covered Pure Heroine, self-doubt soaks through Melodrama - the constant questioning of where things went wrong, what was your fault, how things could be different. “Perfect Places” ends the record by accepting things for what they are, and giving us one last smirking return to teenage rebellion: “If they keep telling me where to go/I’ll blow my brains out to the radio.” The beat drops out, we hear Lorde make the sound of a shotgun cocking with her mouth, and the chorus thunders back to Earth, and Lorde rides off into the sunset. Or maybe, in this case, the sunrise. It has been, after all, “just another graceless night.”

I’ve struggled with materialism my entire life. I think it comes with the territory of being a hardcore Star Wars fan. Arcade Fire cut directly to the heart of the issue on Everything Now’s title track: “Every room of my house is filled with shit I couldn’t live without/I need it/Stop pretending that you’ve got everything now.”

6. “American Teen” - Khalid

Khalid deservedly blew up this year off the one-two punch of “Location” and “Young, Dumb, Broke,” but the real highest peak on his overstuffed, vibrant debut record is the eponymous “American Teen.” There might be no other image as familiar and evocative to modern youth writ large in lyrics this year as Khalid, trying to remember what he’s had and where he’s going, crying about his hometown in the backseat of an Uber ride while his best friend passes out next to him. “Wake me up in the spring,” he begs, “when I’m high off my American dream.”

Stranger Things 2 (the show)

Dude, talk about a smart sequel! Stranger Things 2 spends almost the entire run slowly dealing with the consequences of the first season and the natural problems that would evolve from that. It seamlessly folds new characters into the narrative, giving us maybe the year’s best villian in Dacre Montgomery’s delectable Billy. And then, after seven episodes of build-up, it blows everything away and returns to that thrilling, petal-to-the-metal, jump-out-of-your-seat Stranger Things that you remember from the first season. The season’s ultimate climax, with Eleven and Hopper in an old mining lift, is the most visually beautiful set piece in anything this year.

Jon Bois’s “What Football Will Look Like in the Future” article on SBNation starts off as what I assume is a fairly standard article about sports, and over time becomes something very, very different. It’s best experienced with no prior knowledge. I came across it in the middle of a Dentist appointment, and spent the rest of the day totally engrossed, ignoring the dentist and most everything else I had to do that day. It does ultimately revolve around football, and the way that entertainment connects us, and just why that matters so much.

however she’s starting to fall in love with life on the outside - the clothes, the accessories and above all the freedom, even if she still has trouble understanding social norms. it’s leading her to wonder if after capturing her target, she should run away.

(her parents are taking care of her child and she visits on weekends and during break - they also help her with video chats as well.) in the absence of her child, maxwell is mothering her roommates ryan (3) and paquette and she’s also trying to mother her lab partner ariana sharde since she’s noticed the girl doesn’t seem to have friends. not that ariana makes it easy >>

— stark (2) (19, sports therapy student at monash, suggested face claim ryan potter) - so stark is a star sprinter for the monash track team who loves to run and flirt with pretty girls. however he doesn’t have the best radar for girls who aren’t interested or who have protective friends/siblings, a fact which his older sister swears is going to get him flattened. case in point, stark has been flirting heavily with ryan (3) one of the members of the relay team despite the fact she’s kinda flustered and her brother is always getting in his way while ariana sharde - a girl he runs into at the fitness center - seems to constantly give flat statements, no matter what he says...

— corbet (19, mediveal studdies student at monash, suggested face claim ryan lambert) - corbet is a member of the dead language user club (his major means latin has become a thing for him.) he’s become very fond of the other members - who see his old fashioned manners as charming rather than as annoying like his roommate - so when he keeps seeing the same girl show up at the same places the club is meeting, it’s attracted his attention and has him wondering what’s going on.

PLOT IDEAS

omicron wants to try out this whole “normal life” thing. which means it would be awesome if either darwin or maxwell makes an attempt to drag omicron out and about for shopping, beach or party excursions. things may not entirely go to plan, but that’s half the fun, yes?

so stark (2)’s blurb suggests that he might be more into ryan than he is omicron, but since ryan’s got a pesky older brother, i think it would be hilarious if stark decides that ariana sharde is the perfect shield so he can be all “ryan, i’m totally not oogling your sister, i have a girlfriend now” - even if omicron would be the weirdest date ever. (granted stark runs the risk of her poisoning him, possibly by accident.)

corbet starts trying to get to know omicron as he tries to figure out why she’s stalking the dead language user club. this could get him into trouble. or it could threaten to blow omicron’s cover if he’s the type to ask probing questions until he gets the answers he wants

omicron’s attempted takedown of devine doesn’t go to plan and the dead language user club either starts acting like a bodyguard squad or decides “police are useless” and try to rescue her on their own. (doubly fun if devine’s been sent to the compound, but omicron is still wandering around monash.)

I absolutely loved Braelynn and Rhodes but admittedly I hated Emory with a passion. All of these opinions, obviously lend credit to the author to create characters developed enough for me to feel that strongly for or against - with the exception of Lyric.. like I said, it was a struggle for a while.) Worldbuilding: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (I really enjoyed the worldbuilding in this one and so wished there would have been a map - maybe in the next book??? I could see it so clearly, like I was right there in the book.) Story: 🌟🌟🌟(The plot wasn't bad, my struggle was with Lyric which made it hard for me to get into the beginning of this book, but I loved the premise of the story to keep going and it really paid off.
