You peer out of the fenestrated walls, eyes glazing over the faint swinging of wooden signs and veranda covers. The ambience around you swirls like a sheer veil as you lean back into your seat, sighing out blissfully as your cooling charm beats with fervor, shielding you from the blistering heat of the summer day.
Dragging your eyes away from the bright view, you run your finger along the thick cardstock in front of you. The blocky letters begin to fade into the background of snowy mountain caps and faded waterfalls as you continue to trace your eyes over it.
‘Greetings from OREGON’
You flip the postcard over and swipe a finger across the swirly letters.
‘Hope you’re well, kid. - A. Fiske’
A sudden thudding noise echoes across from you, and you slowly shift to sit straight as your eyes drag themselves away from the letters. You tilt your head with a coy smile as your companion leans back to get comfortable, evidently miffed by the unrelenting heat waves.
“Good to see you, B.” You smile saccharinely, fingers dancing along the chilled cup in front of you.
Blaise rolls his eyes and places his own drink down on the table—iced americano, simple, bitter, and everything that Blaise wasn’t. You would never understand his fascination with the drink. He huffs before smiling sarcastically at you, “Yes, how long has it been? Two days?”
“Don’t whine, it’s unbecoming.” You mutter playfully, twirling your straw around the rim of your cup.
“Merlin, you’re even starting to sound like her. Really, no wonder mother finds you so endearing.” He tuts as he throws his elbow back to rest on the back of his chair.
You chuckle and shake your head, “Okay, let’s digress then.” You lean forward and cross your legs, “How is Draco doing? Theo is irritatingly uninformed on the topic.”
“He’s alright, thanks to you and Potter anyway. His father might not be facing a long sentence, but many of the elected Wizengamot heads are shifty even with your statements. Lucius Malfoy has been a slippery eel for a few years too long.” He hums, face unflinching as he sips on his potent drink, “How the mighty have fallen so.”
Nodding, your voice drops lower as you survey the rest of the cafe, “Azkaban will still do a number on him even with a lighter sentence. Narcissa is worried.”
“As she should be,” he replies curtly, “and speaking of Azkaban, how is Lord Black nowadays? He’s become quite the hermit. Is he faring well?”
You sigh and rub your chin, “Yeah, he’s just been busy with remodeling. He’s still quite miffed that Reggie and I decided to move out.”
“At least he has Potter with him.” Blaise supplies, eyes darkening in rumination at the mention of Regulus. He levels you with inquisitive eyes, “Before I forget, what should I send over?”
Furrowing your eyebrows, you hum, “How do you mean?”
“Your house warming gift, daft one.” He rolls his eyes lightly.
“Just bring your lovely self.” You huff out.
Blaise crosses an ankle over his knee, “A vase then.”
“If it clashes with the aesthetic then I’m tossing it into the basement.” You warn jokingly, smiling widely at your friend.
He shakes his head with a muffled chuckle, “No worries. Anyways, you still need to unpack, right? Need any help?”
“Oh? Work not keeping you busy enough?” You rest back against your chair, head bleeding with thoughts about how taxing work has been in the past few months with the Ministry trying to dial the reconstruction process to an inconceivable pace.
Blaise groans at the reminder, taking a long sip of his drink, “Merlin, they should rename the whole Department! Department of International Magical Cooperation? What a joke, all they do is sit in an oval and squabble.”
You throw your head back to laugh, a feathery light bubble of relief expanding in your chest. It was mind-boggling to think that not even a year ago you were all fighting for your lives, and now the same backdrop of fear that followed everyone around for so many years had disintegrated. People strided through halls and streets with lifted shoulders and bright eyes, war-hardened, but jovial as their burdens gave way.
Blaise had worked his way up the Department of International Magical Cooperation, often leaving meetings with a sharp migraine and dwindling hope in the frequency of common sense. Theodore was faring well, now a highly revered Unspeakable for the Time Branch, all made possible with his swift denouncement of his father. Draco was the more withdrawn one out of the three, but you held out hope for him, having corresponded with him over his budding fascination for Alchemy.
You found that your new friends were on your mind often, and you were endlessly grateful to them as they took Regulus’ reintegration into society with stride, often giving you advice on how to politely tell inquisitive reporters to bugger off. Meetings with them were slowly becoming a rarity as all of you became engrossed in work, but your friendships remained resolute as you all quickly became each other’s closest confidants.
Luna wrote to you often, and you sent her trinkets and snacks by the dozen, finding yourself constantly worried that others would mistreat the girl with the absence of your friend group. Luckily, the girl found a friend in Ginny, and you were looking forward to reuniting with her during her Summer Break.
Harry and Ron were inducted into the Auror ranks by Shacklebolt only a few weeks after the war. You had your reservations about their decision to jump into such a high-risk job, the stench of carnage and battle throbbing like an open wound, but they insisted that they would never be able to focus enough to finish school.
On the opposite side of that sentiment, there was Hermione. She had quickly delved back into Hogwarts’ curriculum amidst its reconstruction, and was now looking to you with hopeful words about beginning her own sabbatical.
You had published your research under both yours and Regulus’ name, omitting information about Regulus’ discovery of sentient portraits as a precaution for the future.
You both respected Anders’ wish to leave his name off the cover and the research, but he failed to warn you against leaving his name anywhere else, so simply on the first page of your book, you dedicated the findings to him and Asger with a simple ‘For A. & A. Fiske.’
The research was groundbreaking, to say the least. You wouldn’t be able to forget the swaths of letters and documents from the Ministry, and one very heated missive to you from Blaise about how he was even more swamped with work, many foreign countries reaching out to inquire about the findings.
It all paid off though, the royalties you and Regulus got would sustain you both for the rest of your humble lives, and the boost on your portfolio made getting a job in the Department of Mysteries a cakewalk.
Once the sun rolled across the cloudless sky, the singing blues morphing to hues of pinks and purples, you bid your friend goodbye, wishing him luck with work and promising to gather with the rest of your friends the following week.
You were certain that apparition was the most useful skill you had in your toolbelt, and you couldn’t fathom how you managed to survive the majority of your life without such a feat. As your shoes pad against the pavement, the bristling of leaves skidding around you, you let out a content sigh as you approach your destination.
It was the closest thing you had to home for so long, and it still felt like safety and comfort despite the sudden heaviness of your own house keys in your pocket. As you pop the door open, head peeking around the heavy wood, your face lights up as a figure comes into view.
“You’re home!” You exclaim excitedly, stepping inside with a wide grin.
Harry approaches you and gives you a fleeting hug, hand raising to adjust his glasses as he pulls back, “Yeah, Tonks let me off early. How was your meeting with Blaise?”
“Good,” you draw out suspiciously, eyes narrowing as you both pace through the dim walkway, “how’d you know about that?”
“Regulus.” He answers simply, eyebrows raising in tease as you huff.
You both cross into the threshold of the kitchen, stopping in your tracks as you see countless manuals splayed across the wide berth of the table. Regulus and Sirius are both hunched over in their seats, flipping furiously through the catalogues.
“Some light reading, Sirius?” Your voice rings out playfully, body already moving towards your squinting boyfriend. Both men shoot up from their positions and blink owlishly at you and Harry, the sea of papers long forgotten.
“Furniture shopping, pup!” Sirius replies with a tired grin as he stretches his arms over his head.
Regulus rises from his chair and meets you halfway, arms wrapping securely around your body as he burrows his face into the crook of your neck. A few more moments pass by before he cranes back and blinks slowly at you, “Birdie.”
You run a hand through his curls and smile lightly, “Love.”
Regulus keeps you secure to him as he moves to drop back down into his seat, leaning his head against your stomach as you remain standing. Your eyes drop down to look at the varying bleak images on the shining white pages.
Raising your eyebrows, your eyes drift around an image of a steep bookshelf with two glass doors, “Is this for us or Sirius?”
Sirius leans back in his seat and rubs the bridge of his nose, “Your place. Reggie helped me pick out a few pieces earlier.”
Your eyes wander around the aged cabinets and drabby wallpaper, trying to envision the space in a remodeled visual, one that would be Sirius-esque rather than screaming of cobwebs and medieval torture. You smile minutely before reaching a hand out across the table, bringing your other hand to card through Regulus’ hair as you mutter quietly to the tired man across from you, “I’m happy for you, Sirius.”
The man reciprocates your smile and clasps his hand in yours, “Thank you, pup. I’m happy for you too,” he huffs and glances at Regulus, who remained immobile against your stomach, “the both of you.”
The tender moment continues for a few more beats before Harry slowly leans on the seat next to Sirius’, eyes scrutinizing a forgotten pile of booklets off to the older man’s left, “Sirius, where are we going to put a lion table?”
You snort out a muffled laugh as the man swivels over to his godson with beaming eyes, knowing that Harry would be whining to you later about Sirius’ ineptitude at interior decorating.
“You should start cleaning up, Remus will be here soon for dinner.” You murmur with a pointed look at the trio.
As the final outlines of the sun slinks away in the horizon, you and Regulus bid farewell to the occupants of Grimmauld Place, intent on spending the rest of the night in your home. It was fortunate that Regulus had managed to set up the floo network to your home only a matter of days before, and the journey back left little room for complaints as the green flames dragged away from your vision.
You step out into the darkness of your study room, ears perking imperceptibly when the network flares again as Regulus joins you. The twilight sky filters into your home, dimly illuminating the barren room.
“We’re home.” You mutter with a content smile.
Regulus slowly pads towards you, wrapping his arms around your waist as he sways you both. Your eyes are drawn to the French casement windows behind the desk, getting lost in the sight of the dancing flower field.
“Shall we head to the cliff, birdie?” Regulus muses, eyes following your gaze as he drifts into rumination.
You nod and reluctantly step forward, pivoting on your heel and dropping a hand onto Regulus’ arm, “I’ll meet you at the front? I need to drop off a few things in the bedroom.”
“Of course, baby.” He leans over to capture your lips in a soft kiss, hands dropping to your hips as he lightly grips onto you.
Humming against his lips, you slowly pull back and rub a thumb across his cheek, “I’ll be quick, promise.”
He pecks your lips again and gives you one last squeeze before he slowly backs away, shooting you a warm smile as he makes his way to the entryway. You retreat from the study room soon after, making a sharp right turn as you pace towards your shared bedroom.
Regulus had been the one to bring up the idea of getting a beach house, assuring you that he was unsettled by still water and not turbulent waves. It was a quaint building, one that sprouted into the center of a lustrous flower garden, and you both knew it was the one when you toured it. Just a short walk away from the blooming fields, a precipitous cliffside broke away and loomed over a thick landing of sand, giving a small brief from the swaying waves
As you enter the lusterless room, you shed away your bag and walk towards your bedside table, propping the Oregon postcard against your lamp. Atop the same white bedside table sat Regulus’ old golden frame, now whole and without trace of ever having been shattered. Under the frame, the folded piece of paper that Regulus had given you the night after you bought the property peeked out.
You grasp both items in your hands, and smile lightly as an idea formulates in your head.
“Kreacher!” You call lightly.
The house-elf pops into the bedroom with a curious frown, teetering towards you as you extend the items out. You fish out your wand as Kreacher grabs the frame, muttering a faint engorgio at the rectangular object. The frame wobbles in the elf’s grasp before slowly stretching to nearly thrice its original size.
“Could you possibly frame this note for me? Maybe above the headboard?” You request with a small smile.
“Kreacher will do that.” The house elf nods and begins to fiddle with the frame.
Your eyes run across the note one more time before you hand the slip to the elf, making your way out to Regulus with a fleeting farewell. The boy has a jacket slung over his arm as he waits for you by the door, carding his hair back as a flicker of joy flashes through his eyes when you appear in his line of sight.
“All ready?” He murmurs once you reach him.
“More than ready.” You reply with a hum, leaning to peck his cheek.
The trek towards the cliffside passes by in the blink of an eye, and you’re left with butterflies in your stomach as Regulus picks several tulips for you along the way. By the time you’re close enough to the ocean to hear the crashing of waves, you are left to huddle close to Regulus for warmth.
The sky begins to darken above you, but you give no protest when Regulus drags you to sit down on the ground. He peers up at the sky above him, eyes tracing across the faint twinkles of the approaching stars.
You bring a hand to trace his chest as you do the same, cradling the flowers to your side as you begin to sift through the reel of memories in your head.
“I love you, birdie.” Regulus whispers into the air, his arm moving to rest on your waist.
You smile widely and press your face into the crook of his neck, “I love you.”
And as you both laid under the stitches of glowing stars, sharing tiny whispers and shielding each other from the brutal winds, back in your home, Kreacher makes the last adjustments to the new wall decor.
Kreacher mutely assesses the space as he backs out, the elf’s head full of future possibilities.
It was peaceful. After so many years, he felt at peace.
The door closes with a faint click just as the stars peek through the bedroom window, reflecting off the glowing frame. The swirls of inks encapsulated in the shining beams dance amongst the canvas of the wall.
‘29 October, 1979
I wonder what being in love feels like.
26 April, 1999
Love is like flying freely from the inhibitions of your burdens, where your person is your wings, your eyes, and your heart; you soar freely with the knowledge that they will carry you above the storms of doubt. I no longer wonder because now I know.’
Fin.

The Family (Part 1)
Regulus Black AU
Request: Can you write a story where Regulus and the reader have been best friends for years. After Hogwarts, they move to France and get married without telling The Blacks? After being away a few years, they come back and surprise everyone.
Parings: Regulus Black x Reader
___
“You know that my family isn’t friendly…right?”
You looked up from your dressing table. Regulus sat on the bed looking at you with a slightly worried look.
“Like I’m concerned. I can be unfriendly too. Let fire meet fire.”
You chose to ignore the little wince that your “husband” gave you. It was no secret that Regulus was worried about facing his parents after eloping. This was the most “un-Regulus” like thing that he had ever done in his life. Meeting the repercussions of his actions was now beginning to worry him.
It had been nearly three years since Regulus had seen or talked to his family. The two of you had been hiding out in France. After moving back to England, it was time to face the proverbial music.
“Y/n, I really don’t think that you know what you are getting into. My parents aren’t like your parents. Mine are deranged and…chaotic.”
You put your brush down before moving to settle yourself on Regulus’ lap. Reaching out you twirled your fingers around one of the curls that was about to fall into his eyes.
“Regulus, we have been best friends since we were 11. I know all about your family and their…ways. It's going to take a lot more than I am the almighty Walburga Black to scare me off. Granted, I do wish that I could have a mother-in-law to do fun things with but, hey, you get what you get. You, my love, are worth whatever those nutcases have to throw at me.”
You were relieved when Regulus smiled. It wasn’t often that a smile graced his face but when it did, your heart melted.
“Maybe, if I’m l lucky, mother will fall over dead from a heart attack and the rest of the family will just spontaneously combust.”
Regulus commented with a smile. He knew what he was getting into. Regulus knew that his family was about to have a fit when he brought his new “wife” home. He knew that evening’s dinner was bound to be a fiasco. You were the absolute last person that Walburga wanted Regulus to marry. She hated the fact that the two of you were best friends. The literal only reason why she finally shut up about it was the fact that you were a Slytherin and a pure blood.
“If you must be friends with that girl, fine. It isn’t like you are going to marry her one day.”
Regulus had never forgotten that comment from Walburga. He had been 13 at the time and told his mother that you were his friend. He had no intention of stopping being your friend. It didn’t matter how angry it made his mother. Regulus had banked on his “being his mother’s favorite” card to keep her from beating the stuffing out of him after that comment.
To Regulus’ relief, Walburga stomped off muttering to herself about wondering why her sons were so obsessed with the Potter children. She just couldn’t understand what was so fascinating that Regulus and Sirius couldn’t say no to. At the moment, that was enough for Regulus.
Now, however, things were different. Regulus had fallen in love with you. After a completely “innocent” kiss at 15, he was hooked. There would be hope in Regulus ever wanting to stay away. He couldn’t…not even if he tried.
The following years were full of Regulus keeping you away from any member of his family. No matter how many times you told him that you were ready to officially meet them and rip the “bandage” off, Regulus always said no.
“Reggie, I hate to break it to you but no one will be dropping dead of any heart attacks. Besides, your mother should expect something. We are always together. One would think that with as smart as she “claims to be”, she would have figured out that we have been together since 5th year. Like it or not, she will just have to get over it.”
“I hate knowing that I am taking you into that lion’s den.”
Leaning forward, you placed a soft kiss on Regulus’ lips. You hoped that some kind of physical contact would calm down his raging mind.
“Regulus, I want you to hear me. It will take a lot more than your family to scare me off. I knew what I was getting into when I said, I do. I know your parents aren’t like my parents. They will just have to accept that we are in love. If they can’t…then that is on them. That won’t be our problem.”
“But we have two things that will be their problem.”
Regulus commented as his grey eyes flickered to the corner of the room where your twin daughters sat playing. Both girls were not the least bit interested in the conversation that their parents were having. You looked at your daughters sympathetically before turning back to Regulus. He didn’t have to say it for you to know this was the other source of his panic.
“Maybe knowledge that they are suddenly grandparents will take them out.”
You suggested with a smile. Regulus couldn’t help but smile as you got off of his lap.
“I have to keep them safe from mum and dad. I don’t want them pushing their ideals on Matilda and Rose.”
Both girls looked up and gave Regulus matching little smirks before going back to their toys.
“Regulus, I have known you for a long time. I know that you won’t let them hurt the girls.”
Regulus was quiet a moment as he watched Matilda and Rose play. He coudln’t help but wonder why his own father wanted absolutely nothing to do with him until he had gotten older. Regulus wanted nothing more than to be a part of whatever it was his daughters were doing.
“What if being around them makes me act like…him?”
Regulus questioned. You moved to stand beside your husband. Reaching down, you wrapped your hand around his and squeezed gently.
“The fact that you are even worrying about it tells me that won’t happen. If it were your father, he would never even have that thought. He would just be uncaring and believe that children are to be seen and not heard.”
Before Regulus could comment, the doorbell rang.
“That will be your brother.”
Both twins' heads popped up as they stood up to toddle out of the room shrieking Sirius’ name.
You moved to walk out of the bedroom to answer the door but stopped to look back at Regulus.
“I mean it, love, you are nothing like your father and you won’t become him. Now let's get this exciting evening over so we can have something to laugh about later.”
Walking downstairs, you smiled seeing Sirius holding both Matilda and Rose. Both twins were trying to look through his shirt pocket for the lollipops that he always brought them.
“Mine!”
Matilda shrieked before taking the lollipop out of Rose’s hand. This resulted in Rose screaming “mine” right back at her sister. Sirius looked between both toddlers and sat them down. He handed each girl a lollipop before shaking his head.
“You both get one. No need for the yelling.”
“Thank you”
Matilda muttered before going to sit down at the little table in the corner. Rose patted Sirius’ leg and went to join her sister as Sirius started trying to wipe some sticky substance off of his face.
“I don’t want to know what that is.”
He commented as you handed him a wet cloth. Chuckling Sirius cleaned the gooey spot off before giving you a smirk.
“I never thought in a million years that my neat-as-a-pin brother would be open to being a father. I thought he would barf the moment that a kid drooled on him. So…are you two really going to subject yourself to a delightful dinner from hell with Norma and Norman Bates?”
You nodded.
“Its best we get this over with. The quicker we totally rock their words the faster it will be over>”
Sirius winced.
“I don’t think it will be that easy, love. So, how is Regulus handling it?”
“Like I’m about to fall through thin ice on a pond.”
Regulus commented as he walked into the room pulling on his suit jacket. Sirius turned to face his brother and gave him a sympathetic expression.
“Maybe she will have a heart attack? I mean telling her that you married Y/n and that you have kids will be a huge shock. What if she just kills over at the dinner table? Are you just going to leave her or will you call for help? Reg, what if dad kills over too? Wouldn’t that be great?!”
Regulus only wished that he could have Sirius’ level of enthusiasm at the moment.
“I’m not that lucky, Sirius. Look, the twins go to bed at 8. Try not to hype them up on sugar this time. The last time we didn’t get them to sleep until after 11.”
Sirius gave Regulus a cold scowl.
“Look last time, they asked for ice cream. Try saying no to those little faces.”
As if on command both Matilda and Rose gave Regulus their signature “I’m cute” face.
“Love you daddy.”
Matilda muttered. Rose nodded eagerly but didn’t give up a moment with her candy. Regulus shook his head.
“Love you too, princess.”
He turned back to Sirius discreetly giving him the middle finger.
“And you’re teaching them to suck up knowing very well that I can’ say no to them.”
Sirius chuckled to himself before moving to sit on the couch.
“Well, you’ll be okay.”
Glazing down at your watch, you turned to Regulus.
“We better get going if we want to make our appearance as planned.”
Regulus groaned.
“Damn.”
The two of you moved to kiss your daughters goodbye. Sirius gave you both a final look.
“If you need me, I’ll be there in a jiffy.”
“I’ll remember that. You should pray that I don’t kill her.”
Regulus replied before following you out the door.
A moment later, you stood beside Regulus outside of Grimmauld Place. Neither of you moved to knock on the door. After a moment, you turned to look at Regulus. His handsome features were set into a hard scowl.
“Reggie, remember what I said. You aren’t your father and are nothing like your family.”
Regulus nodded. Hearing those words come from your mouth always seemed to make him feel better. Right now, it was especially helpful because he felt as if he was throwing his family into the lion's den.
“We should get this over with.”
Regulus commented before knocking on the door.
A moment later, Kreacher opened the door. The elf’s eyes got huge seeing the one person that he loved most in the world.
“Master Regulus, you finally came home. Kreacher is delighted to see you.”
Kreacher turned his attention to you and frowned. He knew exactly who you were after hearing Walburga fuss about you for many hours. Regulus had followed Kreacher’s gaze and took a breath.
“Kreacher, this is my Y/n. I want you to treat her with respect.”
The elf didn’t look thrilled by the comment. He held back the vile comment that he wanted to make about the Potters being blood traitors. If there was one thing that Kreacher wouldn’t do, it was upset Regulus.
“Yes, Master Regulus. Please follow Kreacher. Dinner has just been served.”
Regulus tightened his hold on your hand as the two of you stepped into the house.
You had never been inside Grimmauld Place before. After stepping in the door it was as dark and gloomy as you expected. Nothing about this place screamed warm and welcoming.
“This makes me love my family all the more.”
You thought as you followed Regulus and Kreacher down the dark and gloomy hallway. At least, with your family, the home was always warm and welcoming. No one had to worry about being hexed over the dinner table.
Your thoughts stopped the moment that you stepped into the dining room. Just as you expected, the room grew silent. Multiple sets of cold eyes were initially upon you. You squeezed Regulus’ hand as Walburga stood up looking furious.
“Regulus, why is that girl here?”
Regulus took a breath. He didn’t expect much of a greeting from his mother.
“Hello, mother.”
He glanced to where his father sat. Orion was watching him with a hawk-like expression while his grandmother and grandfather took sips of their wine. Cygnus and Druella both were giving each other hesitant expressions as if to say “here we go.”
“I asked you a question, Regulus. It's been three years since we have seen you and you come home with this girl.”
Regulus swallowed, suddenly remembering just who the hell he was. If his mother wanted to play hardball then so could he.
“Yes, Mother it has been three years. Furthermore, this girl has a name, and its Y/n. I expect respect for my wife.”
Both Walburga and Orion went pale. Cygnus and Druella’s mouths dropped while Arcturus and Melania tilted their heads.
“Silly of me, but did you say wife?”
Walburga finally choked out.
“Yeah, he said wife. My name is Y/n. Just so you know, Walburga, I match people’s energy. You be nice to me and I’ll be nice to you. If you want to start shit, you better be ready to dance. That goes for all of you lovely people. Now, we are here in goodwill. We aren’t here for this to turn into some muggle soap opera-level crap.”
You watched as Walburga quickly began to stutter. She clearly did not expect that to come out of your mouth. Orion, meanwhile, was looking at you with a look of amazement.
“You wanted to see us. We are here but play your cards carefully. Remember that I’m the heir to this family.”
Regulus added in a calm even tone. Walburga continued to blink before turning to Orion. Orion gave his wife a cold glare before turning back to his son.
“I see that you couldn’t be bothered to tell us about any of this.”
Regulus smirked.
“Sorry, Father but we have been rather busy in France. There is more you should know. We have twin daughters. If you have any interest in seeing them, the lot of you will agree to my terms.”
Walburga sank back in her chair before grabbing Orion’s arm.
“They have children. Oh heaven help me, they have children.”
Orion didn’t say anything immediately as he glanced at his wife. He knew Walburga would kill him later but he had a feeling that she would do exactly as her son asked. In private, Walburga had been a wreck since Regulus moved away. There had been multiple times that she had shed tears over the subject. Of course, Orion would never tell Regulus this.
“Yes, we have children.”
You replied. Melania turned to her grandson with a gentle expression. Regulus had always been her favorite. Now seeing him as a husband and father made her extremely pleased. While she still could see the darling little boy that Regulus was, it was clearly time to see him as the man that he had become.
“You didn’t bring them with you, Regulus.”
Regulus’ cold expression softened as he addressed his grandmother.
“No, grandmother. I didn’t with reason. Our family has a talent for losing our tempers and acting out of places of anger. My daughters don’t need to be exposed to that. Before any of you lay eyes upon them, you’ll listen to what I have to say and agree to my terms.”
Orion leaned back in his chair with a scowl.

The way She doesn't look at him pt. 2 out of 3 (Regulus Black x Potter! Reader)
A/n: So I tried to post this last night as a send-off to 2022 but it was not showing up in the tags so I had to take it down and repost it as a whole new post. I am so glad that my last Regulus imagine got so much love I just had to start part two as soon as possible. Writing for Regulus was a refreshing challenge that I thoroughly enjoyed. I do apologize that we are not to the Yule Ball...yet but that is alright because everything that happened in this part needed to for the story I was trying to tell. I love Ballroom scenes since the one I had wrote foe Alec Volturi.

"Ay Mini Potter what are you doing this weekend!?!" Sirius asks while walking over to the Ravenclaw table where I am sitting.
"Sirius must you yell this early in the morning it's not even time for breakfast yet," I state tiredly not meeting his gaze that I can feel on my face.
"My apologies princess," He says in a much quieter tone, "So what are you doing this weekend?" he asks again as he plops down next to me.
I still don't meet his gaze that is lingering on my face, "Well, Sirius, if you know I am going shopping for my Yule ball dress with my friends," I say dismissively answering a potions' question simultaneously.
"I thought you were not going to the Yule Ball?" he asks "And since when do you have friends outside of the boys?"
"No, Sirius I said that I wasn't going with you," I pause to look up at his face to see the look of slight shock before he relaxes his face, "And who my friends are is none of your business now if you excuse me, I have to meet Jane in the library," I state getting up and walking out of the common room.
I only half lied to Sirius, I do have to meet someone but it's not Jane and it certainly isn't in the library. Ever since Regulus had confessed to me in the empty classroom and let the detail slip about Sirius seeing me in a romantic way. I have been extra careful, watching Sirius's movements around me like a hawk. It has gotten easier for Regulus and I to sneak around since the map was confiscated by Filch. I was told that Severus had tipped him off about James' wrongdoings which also played out in my favor so I'm not mad about it all.
Since I had rejected Sirius' offer to the ball he has made it his mission to try and get into my favor, little does he know it is never going to work. Sirius is simply not my type, he's loud, a bully, and most times he is a pain in my ass. I can't deny that I adore most of my brother's friends but Sirius has always gotten on my nerves. It has only gotten worse as the years have gone on.
To make sure I am not being followed I make my way back to the Ravenclaw Common room, from there I will take a secret passage that will lead me to the hallway the room of requirement is. Regulus and I have been dating for about two weeks and it has been a blast. He has since introduced me to his friends, His cousin Narcissa is actually who I am going dress shopping with. I have yet to share this piece of information with Reg yet.
Since Regulus introduced me to Narcissa she had welcomed me with open arms. I am not going to lie it was very surprising, she has been beyond kind to me. She has some of the best jokes and I am very glad we get along so well.
I walk into the room of requirement with a smile when to see Regulus near the fire reading a book. "My love you are late," he states flipping his page and not looking at me.
"I'm sorry Reg, but your brother was being a bit bothersome," I state walking further into the room.
This causes regulus to close his book quickly before he stands and walks over to me. He places a warm hand on one of my cheeks, "What did my idiot older brother do now?"
I look up into his eyes and can't help but kiss him softly on the corner of his mouth before I allowed myself to respond, "I took care of it love, nothing you need to worry about."
He looks at me questionably for a second before he brings me into a kiss, when we pull apart he rests his forehead on mine with our eyes still closed for a moment just basking in the presence of each other. I break the silence first, "Narcissa invited me to go dress shopping with her this weekend, I quite like her so think I am going to go."
"How odd Lucius invited me to go suit shopping this weekend. I did want to go dress shopping with you but I guess they want it to be a surprise. I will give you money for your dress." he states as we both sit down by the fire cuddling.
"Reg you don't need to give me money I can buy my dress for the ball," I stated softly.
"Nonsense I want to buy your dress so just let me spoil you, please."
"Fine but only because you are so cute." I give in to him.
Time skip
It is now the weekend and Narcissa and I are going to go to Hogsmeade to go dress shopping. I know I won't run into anyone else I know as they are all staying back at the castle. The ride with Narcissa was fun and filled with light-hearted jokes. "Hey, Reg told me to give this to you," Narcissa states tossing a small pouch in my direction.
I quickly catch the pouch and curiously open it. "What's inside of it Cissa?"
"I don't know he just told me to give it to you." She says
I look inside the pouch and my eyes slightly widen at its contents, he gave me money, more than enough money to get my dress. "Cissa he's buying my dress." I quickly say.
"Awe that's so cute, Regulus is such a sweetheart, I'm glad you two are finally together," she states with a smile.
"Thank you, Cissa, for inviting me to dress shopping today," I state with a smile.
"Of course, it is nice to hang out with another girl." she muses as we walk into the dress shop.
"What color of dress are you planning to wear y/n/n?" She asks looking at the back of the store towards the black dresses.
I walk up behind her giving my input on the dresses she inquires about, "Regulus and I wear planning on wearing green to the yule ball."
"Oh, how cute, I love how you two are matching." Narcissa has me holding a few dresses in my arms as she browses the aisle.
"Okay I think I will try these on and get your opinion then we will pick one. After we find mine, we will get yours taken care of." She says before she goes into the dressing room to try on her first dress.
we find the perfect dress for her to wear in no time. Now she is picking all different styles of green dresses. Some of the dresses she chooses with be a definite no on my part but others could be bearable.
The one that really catches my eye is this emerald green dress that has a slit that goes up one side and it is slightly off the shoulder. I have tried on three dresses before this one but this is the one I like the most. "Narcissa I really like this dress." I muse as I walk out of the dressing room for her to see me.
I see her gasp with a big smile, "y/n/n that is the one you need to get Regulus will absolutely adore the way you look in it." She states putting the other dresses back where they belong.
I smile back brightly, "Okay I will change back into my clothes then we can buy our dresses."
I change back into my clothes quickly and then I carefully put the dress back on its hanger before exiting the fitting room. I met Narcissa who is waiting for me outside with her dress in her hands. we walk to the front dress to see an older woman, "Ahh are you dearies getting your dresses for the yule ball."
"Yes, ma'am we are buying our dresses for the ball," I state with a smile as she rings out my dress.
I pass her the correct amount of money putting the rest of the pouch away in my bag. I plan on giving the rest of the money back to Regulus as I don't need to keep it. After we have both paid for our dresses we decided to get lunch at The Three Broomsticks Inn before heading back to the school.
We ate our lunch and decided we needed shoes to wear that matched our dresses. So we walk around Hogsmeade to window shop and make casual conversation before I stop in my tracks, "Cissa, how about those ones to go with your dress?" I ask with a nod toward the shoes.
"Oh I absolutely love those, Let's see if we can find a pair in my size."She smiles before walking into the shop with me following her lead.
We walk to the shelves where the shoes are lined up and we find the style that the pair we are looking for. Narcissa then squats down to check the sizes on the box until she reaches up to pull the box she needed. She opens the box and takes the right shoe out and pulls the heel she was wearing off the said foot to try on the new heel.
She smiles up wide at me, "I love them y/n/n these were a great find. Now let's try and find some for you now. " She puts the shoes in the box and smiles before getting up to walk further down the isles of heels in all different shapes, sizes, and styles. "So do you want silver heels or green ones to match your dress?" she ponders.
"Hmm, I haven't really thought about that, to be honest," I state before going over the thought in my head. On the one hand heels in a watching green would be very pretty but the sliver ones would make my outfit fall in accordance with Regulus' house colors. That would make James' and Sirius's head spin so that makes making up my mind a whole lot easier.
"I think we should look for some sliver heels of some sort," I state as we walk to the section where they are located.
I am almost to the end of the aisle and I was starting to lose hope until a pair at the end caught my eye. They were silver with different-sized rhinestones that covered the shoes.
They were beautiful, I bend down to see that there are only two boxes left. I start to feel anxious until I realized that they have my size. I grab the box and sit down on the bench that is at the end of the aisle. Narcissa comes over to me and watches me as I take off my shoes and put on the heels out of the box to try them on. I clip in the straps with a smile and I carefully take a few unsteady steps. "Have you ever walked in heels y/n/n?" Narcissa asks me amused.
"um No, but these seem like the ones that I can make it through the night in," I say sitting back down to take the heels off to put my sneakers back on.
"Oh now I'm so excited, you are going to look so beautiful. Regulus isn't going to know what to do with himself. If he hurts you in any way I will personally have his head; you are such a kind pure person."
"Awe thank you Cissa, I really appreciate it. you are going to look so stunning in your dress." I state as we walk up to the cashier to buy our shoes for the ball.
Once we pay we bid the old man at the front goodbye as we exit the small hole-in-the-wall shop. we then decided to take the Hogwarts Express back to the castle gates. we enjoy our train ride before we part ways at the castle gates as we are going to different sides of the castle.
I make my way back to my common room with my dress and shoes in my enchanted bag that can hold various different sizes of things. It was a gift that has been passed down to the women in my family. I throw a small greeting to the first years that are hanging out in the common room before heading towards the way of my dorm room that I share with Jane.
Once I close the door I let out a breath that I didn't realize I was holding in. I put the bag on my bed and open it, with a blind hand I reached in to pull out my dress. I grab a hanger and gently up the dress onto it. once my dress in safely put away I reach back into the bag on my bed to grab my box of shoes. I put the shoe box into the same closet and close the closet door. I smile when I hear a knock on my door, I put my bag on the hook that is out in front of my closet as I yell out "Come in!"
I turn to see Jane, "Jane it is your room too, you don't need to knock."
"I know I just wanted to make sure that you were decent." She says in her soft voice.
"Oh well thank you for being considerate, How was your day," I state in a grateful tone.
"It was really good and relaxed, Um Regulus Black is looking for you by the way." Jane wiggles her eyebrows at me, "I want details y/n/n"
Jane is the only person I told about Regulus and I, as she is my roommate and my best friend. I truly trust Jane with my life. "Thank you, Jane." I smile widely before I grab my bag and walk out of my room.
Once I am out of the common room I start to make my way to the room of requirement that Reg and I always meet up in. I am not paying attention to exactly where I was going and of course as usual I ran right into someone. I look up and see Regulus, "well hello there Love." he says as he holds a hand out to help me up.
With a smile I put my hand in his and allow him to pull me up, "Hi Reg, I was just going to come to find you."
He holds onto my hand a second longer before he smiles and releases said hand because we are still very much in the middle of the hallway and we don't want to give away our secret. "So y/n do you want to work on our potions project in the library?" He asks loud enough for any prying ears.
"Of course, I have to go grab something from Slughorn but I can meet you there," I reply and wink subtly.
"sounds good y/n I will see you there." He says with a hint of a smile and walks off in the direction of the library.
of course, this is all a countermeasure in case there was anyone watching or trying to listen in. We do intend on making our relationship public but not until the Yule ball.

Little did the young couple know that there was a set of prying eyes after all. In the form of a rat, one that the young girl knew very well. However, said rat had been watching y/n for some time now as he was put up to it by someone very familiar.
"Oh come on Pettigrew, it's not like I am asking you to kill someone!" The young man with Black hair exclaims.
"w-well I guess you aren't but it's not right! What would Prongs say about this?" Peter
"Prongs is too busy with trying to get Lily, to even care what goes on with his sister," he states
"That may be true but w-what about Moony, he wouldn't like this," Peter argues.
"Then he just can't find out now can he?" The male asks rhetorically
"You will do this Pettigrew or I will tell the headmaster about how you sneak out after curfew in your rat form to steal food from the kitchens. you wouldn't want that now would you peter?" he asks tauntingly.
"Fine I will do it but I am not happy about this Sirius, If she catches me I am totally going to take you down with me. I will not have Y/n Potter hating me for something that you made me do!" Peter whisper yells at Sirius angrily.
"Good choice Peter, Now don't you have a certain Ravenclaw to watch." He asks dismissing the scared young man.
Peter Pettigrew shoots a glare at Sirius Black before asking, "Y/n is obviously not into you why can't you pick any other woman to obsess over."
"Because I want her, I have wanted her to be by my side since I had first laid my eyes on her, the want only grew when I formally met her." Sirius states
"She was 11 when you met her, Sirius you were 15 don't you see anything wrong with that?" Peter asks in distaste.
"Age is just a number Pettigrew, plus she's in the fifth year now, I wouldn't be weird." Sirius states
"Yeah and Azkaban is just a place, right?" Peter asks bitterly before shifting to his rat form and exiting the castle in search of y/n.
He knows that it is very wrong and he doesn't want to do this at all but a big part of him knows that Sirius is not one to bluff. Peter feels sick to his stomach at the thought of spying on his best friend's little sister, it was so wrong. And for what just so Sirius can be angry about why y/n doesn't want him. It all is a messed up sick joke that he wants nothing to do with.
Peter is brought out of his thoughts when he hears the familiar laughter of said girl. He watches her walk by with Narcissa Black? Why was she with Sirius' cousin? He follows behind them and listens to their conversation as best as he can.
"oh, Y/n/n I can not wait to see you in the dress we got today oh, and those shoes, you are going to look so good. All eyes are going to be on you, dear! You and my cousin are going to be quite the hot topic of the ball!"
"you really think so, I don't think James will be too happy about my choice of date but that's why I haven't said anything to anyone else only to you," Y/n responds with a shy smile.
Peter decided that he has enough evidence to report back to Sirius, so that is what he goes to do and on his way back he sees y/n again this time with Regulus Black. She had quite literally ran into him, they were too far away for him to hear what is being muttered between the two until Regulus mentions the library and a project from potions that they both need to work on. Then y/n starts to head toward the direction of the dungeons. Peter decides that he has watched her enough for today so he pops into an empty classroom to shift back into his human form.
Once he is back into his normal human form he walks out of the classroom to start in his search for Sirius Black. he enters Sirius's dorm room that he shares with James. He notices that Sirius is alone in the room hanging out on his bed. "That was quick Pettigrew, what do you have for me."
"Well I think she may be planning to ask you to the ball, I saw her with your cousin as they were coming off the train out front. They had gone dress shopping, and Y/n said something about how James would be mad about her choice of date. I am thinking that may be because you are James' best friend." Peter states not really thinking about what he is saying.
Sirius is too deep in his fantasy about the possibility of y/n and him being together that he didn't see any of the flaws in what peter had told him. "Ha, so the girl is only playing hard to get, well played love well played. I guess I will back off a bit so she won't feel intimidated asking me to be her date to the ball," he says with a smile
'You are free to go thank you, Peter."
Peter exits the room without another word. He needs to go come to terms with what he just had to do.
y/n pov
I finally make it to the room of requirement, I purposely had taken a different route just to be safe. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't followed by anyone. I walk in and I hear Regulus exclaim, "There is my beautiful girl, I missed you so much!"
"I am sorry I took longer than expected I wanted to take a different route," I say before sitting next to him pecking him on the lips.
Just as I go to pull away he puts his hand on my cheek guiding my lips back into a passionate kiss. I pull away to catch my breath as I do so I cuddle up into Reg's side to which he welcomes me with open arms, "Did you have fun shopping with my cousin my love?"
"Oh yes I had a blast with Narcissa, we both found what we were looking for. " I smile out, "And this is for you my love," I say and pull the pouch of coins out of my jacket before dropping it in his hand.
"Did you have enough money? Please tell me you used this to buy your dress." he starts to ramble, "Because the whole point of my giving this to you was so I could spoil you like the princess you deserve to be treated as." I place my pointer finger on his lips to stop him from talking.'
"Regulus Black, you gave me plenty. You paid for my whole day today this is just what is left over, you gave me more than enough. I bought my dress, lunch for Cissa and I, and a new pair of heels for the ball too." I muse.
Regulus smiles and tosses the coin pouch aside, "I am very glad babe, do I get to see said dress and shoes?"
"You will the night of the Yule ball," I state with a smile.
"But that is not fair and you know it," he whines out.
"Maybe so but that is just how it has to be, Cissa is making Lucius wait too," I inform him so he doesn't think that he isn't in the same boat.
"Fine, I think I can manage to wait one more week, Now come here." He says pulling me with him as he lays down on the couch, "I am feeling tired and I want cuddles; we will be fine napping in here no one will find us." He yawns wrapping one of his arms around my waist while the other pulls a blanket across from us. He then places his arm by my head so I could use it as a pillow.
I quietly snuggle into him as he starts to drift off and just before he does I hear him faintly whisper but I couldn't quite understand exactly what he muttered. I decide on to dwell on it too much and kiss his hand softly before I quickly start to feel myself drift off.
The next morning I woke up with a comforting arm around my waist and I feel a hand gently playing with my hair. I let out a slightly tired giggle as I try to gracefully turn around to face him. I take in the tired glow of my boyfriend. My eyes glide over his slightly messy hair, down to his glassy eyes still weighted with a sign of sleep, down further to his wrinkled sweater that he had spent the night in.
I feel his gaze on me so I look up to make eye contact with him and I smile. "Good morning gorgeous how did you sleep?" he asked voice slightly deeper with a rasp of tiredness.
"Good morning to you Reg, I sept the best I think I ever have." I gently move some of his hair off his face "How did you sleep?"
"That was the best sleep I have had in a very long time thank you." Regulus' smile widens before he adds, "We should do that more often."
"I agree," I state with a smile, the comfort, and innocence of the act of cuddling makes my soul feel closer to Regulus' as weird as it sounds but I believe it to be true.
I never want to leave the comfort of this room but the importance of what today stands for is too great. It would hurt James greatly if I miss Sunday breakfast like we used to have at home. This tradition started my first year at Hogwarts because it gave James and I both the comfort we needed to get through the week.
"Regulus as much as I never want to leave I am afraid that today is Sunday breakfast with my brother and I am not allowed to miss it," I state in a serious tone.
What Regulus does next surprises me most he lets out a giggle, "Oh my gosh that is so cute, ok Love go and have a good breakfast, I will hang out with you later. I will miss you beautiful."
"I will miss you too handsome, Have such a great day we will definitely hang out later." I give him a hug and kiss him on the lip quickly. "I will see you soon!"
"Yes until then My Love." He whispers before kissing his index and middle finger to blow me a kiss.
I pretend to catch the kiss and put it in my pocket for later. I nod at him one more time before I exit the room. With a smile on my face, I walk down the corridor toward the direction of the common room where french toast will be served today.
I walk into the common room with an extra pep in my step as I make my way toward the table where my brother and his friends are sitting this morning. I see two seats open, the one between my brother and Remus and the open one that is located next to Sirius. I noticed that Peter still isn't up for the day yet. I decide to plop down in the seat next to Remus which is to the left of James' tired face.
"Good morning Jamie and Rem," I say with a smile as the food starts to appear on the table.
"Hey, looks who just in time, How'd you sleep sis?" James asks side-eyeing me.
"I slept fantastically! Thank you for asking, how did you sleep?" I ask
"It was alright." He states starting to put food on his plate.
"Aren't you gonna ask how I am love?" Sirius inquires as I put food on my plate.
I just glance up at him, "Well I actually kinda don't care Sirius." I shrug
"Damn pads what did you do for my sister to hate you today." James laughs.
"Hey, where is peter he normally is at breakfast?" I ask in confusion.
"He is not feeling well today so he's still sleeping," Sirius responds even though I am not looking at him.
I just nod in response before I look around the common room. just as my gaze hits the entrance I see Regulus walk in with Severus trailing behind him in his robes. I quickly look down with a small smile when reg meets my gaze and winks at me.
The rest of breakfast goes really well. Just as everyone starts to get up Remus gently puts a hand on my shoulder, "Hey is it okay if we can talk for a minute?" He asks concerned.
"Yes of Course Remus, is everything alright?" I ask sitting back down as everyone else started to filter out of the common room.
Remus doesn't utter a word until everyone is away from our table and out of the common room. He glances around once more to make sure there is no pry. Once he is sure it is completely safe he leans down to whisper, "Y/n/n I'm not going to be mad but I just have to know, Is there anything going on between you and Regulus Black?" '
I can't hold in the look of shock that washes over my face, "Remus did someone put you up to this?" I ask
"No, If you are I won't tell anyone I just want to make you are feeling comfortable, safe, and happy. If you don't want me to utter a word about it I won't tell a soul."
"Remus you cannot tell a soul, you must take this to the grave that you knew, but yes Regulus Black and I are together and the only reason I am telling you is that out of all James' friends you are the one I trust the most, plus you are the only person who knows on my side so if James finds out I know that you told him." I state
"Do, do you like him? Does he treat you well at least?" Remus asks in a hushed voice.
"Yes Remus I- I think I love him, He treats me very well. He gave me money so Narcissa and I could go hang out dress shopping yesterday. All his friends have been very kind to me." I state with a wide grin.
"Well as long as he makes you happy, protects you from danger, and doesn't let his friends pick on you then that's all I need to know. I am really glad you found someone even if it is Regulus Black." Remus says with a sincere tone.
"He is actually quite sweet Remus, he loves to read and is very funny. He always makes me a priority despite the fact that we are both busy." I brag to Remus because I could trust him.
" I am very glad to hear that, I promise that your secret is safe with me I won't tell a soul." He said
"I appreciate that very much Remus I know you won't tell anyone, I am going to go now." I say with a smile.
"Off to see Regulus." He teases in a very quite sing song voice as he gets up from the table.
I laugh and shake my head slightly, "Catch ya later moony."
"Catch you later small fry." Remus says before walking out of the common room.
I feel a bit of a weight lifted off my shoulders from being able to tell Remus about Regulus and I. I made me happy that he was very understanding and allowed me to explain myself before coming to conclusions like my older brother would. Hopefully when the time comes for them to know then maybe Remus will help me with making them understand the whole situation. I finally walk out of the common room.
As I am walking in a different direction that will take me to the room of requirement I am pulled into a empty classroom. I turn and look at the person who dragged me in here. Instead of it being Regulus whom I expect it to be the Grey eyes off Sirius Black at looking back at me. He has a smirk on his face that makes me feel a little uneasy.
"You know how absolutely mad you drive me." he takes a step closer to me to which I take an uneasy step back.
"Sirius stay back please, I'm not interested in you in that way." I state in a stern yet slightly fearful tone.
"See love you say but I don't believe you one bit." Sirius says continuing to walk forward as I take steps backward.
I reach in my pocket for my wand only to realize that I don't have my wand as I didn't sleep in my room last night. "Of bloody course." I mutter under my breath, the one time I need my wand I don't have it.
Sirius keep walking closer to me and places one arm on the wall by my head the other goes to touch my chin. I slap is hand away in discuss, "Sirius I bloody mean it back off."
"Stop playing hard to get, I know you see the way I look at you. I see the way you look at me too." He states trying to get closer to my body.
"Obivously you don't see the way I look at you because I am going to tell you right now it is not in the way you think. I don't have feelings for you and I would appreciate it if you would step back and let me leave before you do something you will regret." I state in a vemious tone.
He raises his hand and brushes my hair out of my face. To which I responded by pushing him as hard as I could on his chest so he will leave me alone. "Sirius I won't tell you again back off!" I exclaim in anger. My push doesn't shock him much but it gives me the opportunity to try and leave the room. Just as I am about to reach the door he grabs my right arm and turns me to face him.
As a response I raise my left hand and slap him really hard on the face. "Sirius Don't touch me!" I watch as his face turns to the side. I don't let him respond as I walk backwards towards the exit. I leave the room and tears fill up my eyes.
I make my way down to the duegons where I am hoping that Regulus is hanging out in. The closer I get the more my eyes start to leak the tears that are pooling in them. I am not focused on where I am walking when I walk into a woman, "Hey watch where- y/n/n are you all right sweetie?" I hear the voice of Narcissa as she puts one of her arms around my shoulders.
"I-I-I Whe-re is Regulus?" I ask in between hiccups.
"Oh sweetie, he is in his dorm. I will take you to him right now." Narcissa says in a soft tone as she leads me in to the Slytherin Common room and down to the boys dorms. She stops at a dorm room door that I can only assume is Regulus'.
She knocks on the door softly, "Hey Reg." she calls out gently rubbing my shoulder.
"What do you want Ciss-" He pauses when he opens the door and sees me, crying in Narcissa's arms. "My Love what happened? Narcissa what the bloody hell happened?" He demanded when he realized that I couldn't speak through my tears.
"I am not totally sure Reg I found her wandering the dungeons like this. She just wanted to see you." she says as she gently passes me off to Regulus.
Regulus gently pulls me to his chest and allows me to rest my head there and cry. "Thank you Cissa for bringing her to me, I got it from here." I hear him say before he closes the door after she leaves I assume.
He gently leads me to a soft bed and allows me to sit on the plush mattress before he lays back and allows me to lay on his chest and cry. "When ever you want to talk about what is making you so upset I will be here to listen."
I feel the last few tears slip down my cheek as I raise my head from his chest and wipe my eyes. "You have to promise you won't get made and y-you let me explain the whole situation." I say in a shakey tone.
He looks at me in understanding. "What happened after breakfast baby?" he asks softly.
"After breakfast, Remus asked me to stay behind to talk and he asked me about us and I came clean because it is Remus and I know that he wouldn't tell anyone. That's not the problem, it was after we both parted ways and I was dragged into a empty classroom. Sirius was the one would pulled me into the room and he started speaking this nonsense about how I was playing hard to get and when I told him that I didn't like him like that he started to corner me into the wall. Reg he was going to try to kiss me. I pushed him away and when I tired to leave he pulled me back I slapped him and ran out of the classroom. He's never acted like this before and it scared me." I state with a few hiccups in between.
I watch Regulus' actions go from, clam to angry very fast, "HE FUCKEN DID WHAT!?!" He voice bellowed out in anger as he got up from the bed and he starts pacing.
"Reg you promised you wouldn't get mad." I say.
"Baby I'm not mad at you I want to go kill my idiot brother." He seethes
"You can't kill him." I state.
"I won't but I am going to drop you off with Narcissa for a little bit, I will be back." He states leading me up off the bed and down to the girls dorm.
Narcissa opens the door rather quickly her face softens when she sees me and Regulus, "What's up guys are you okay?" she asks us.
"Can y/n/n hang out with you while I go have a stern talking to with my older brother." He asks in a bitter tone.
"Yes of course, Come on in dear we will have some girl bonding time." she smiles at me.
Regulus kisses my forehead softly, "I will be back soon Angel." before he leaves me with his cousin.
"Come on let's paint our nails." she says and guides me to her bed before she gets a small box that has various colors of nail polish. she places it down in front of me, "Here dear, pick whatever color you want, I will pain them for you."
"Thank you Cissa I really appreciate you." I smile and pick out this really pretty green color that she has, "I really like this color." I say picking up the bottle of nail polish.
"Oooo that is a great choice it will look really pretty on you." She says taking the bottle from my hands.
Regulus' POV
After I drop off y/n/n with Narcissa start on my mission of hunting down my brother whom I am very cross with right now. I find my way to the Gryffindor common room before I enter I a deep breath before I utter the password to the common room. The painted lady opened up and I march inside, when I am fully in the room I see James, Remus, and My target, Sirius.
"You!" I point at my brother with a vemomus finger, "Get up." I pulled him from his seat and I push him against the wall harshly, "If you EVER corner or touch her again I will cut off both of your hands and feed them to you!"
"Regulus what is this about?" James asks jumping up from his spot ready to come to Sirius aid.
"You didn't fucking tell him." I laugh angrily, "Well James, you dear friend Sirius cornered your baby sister, tried to kiss her. She denied his advances and he scared her to the point of a panic attack." I state bitterly.
"Sirius I won't tell you again STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM Y/N!" I yell.
"What's it to you? do you have feeling for her? You know she'd never pick you!" he states sharply from his spot on the wall.s
"That may be but She sure as hell isn't going to go for you either. So just do what is best and stay away i mean it. " I release my hold from his shirt, "James you have my permission to beat his ass." I say before I leave Gryffindor's common room to make my way back to my girlfriend.
I am very upset about what Sirius did and I want to beat him to a pulp but I am going to let James do that for me. I am sure he is just as mad about what happened as I am, as y/n/n is his little sister. I make my way back to Narcissa room, when I get there I knock on the door softly before entering the room. What I see makes me smile and I feel my anger start to leave my body.
y/n is painting Narcissa's nails and from the looks of it Narcissa must have painted y/n's as hers are now a pretty shade of green, "You two are looking like you both are having fun, Do you feel better baby?" I ask as I sit down next to her carefully so I don't accidentally cause her to smugde Narcissa's nails. I don't want her to have to repaint them.
"Did you know that when I was growing up, James would come home he used to let me paint his nails but the deal was that the next day he would get to remove it before he would go out to meet up with his friends. Some of his friends may not be the best but James has always been a pretty good big brother." Y/n states with a smile
She looks up at me with a wide smile, "Thank you Regulus. I appreciate you more then words can describe."
"You don't have to thank me Baby, it is my job to protect you and that is exactly what I intended to do. You let me know if Sirius ever come nears you again in a way that makes you uncomfortable. Through I do feel like he isn't going to come anywhere near you, James looked pretty pissed when I left the Gryffindor common room." I say nonchalantly "Sirius Honestly is so dense he didn't connect the dots that we were together."
"You told James?" She asks
"No they were the only ones in their common room, I just walked in there and threatened to cut off Sirius' hands if he ever touched you again. James has no idea about us but he also didn't know about the stunt that Sirius pulled towards you." I say as she finishes Cissa's nails.
"I appreciate that you did that for me." she states before kissing me gently.

“Oi,” Evan Rosier snickered, nudging his friend with his elbow, “look who the new girl is.” His words caught the attention of the intended friend and Regulus Black lifted his head from his work to see who had got Evan winking in their direction.
“No way,” Regulus chuckled, seeing the way her eyes squinted and the lines on her face etched into a look of disgust at his friend's action.
Regulus hadn’t seen her since Hogwarts.
She had quite the reputation. Which wasn’t a surprise considering she came from one of the oldest and therefore noblest wizarding families. She was in Slytherin, of course, and in the same year as Regulus and Evan. She was Quidditch Captain, Head Girl, and she was the top of every subject she took, much to Regulus’ annoyance.
“Good to see you again,” Evan smirked as she made her way over to her new desk and Regulus found it odd to hear her actual name fall from his friends’ lips considering all of the nicknames they had been calling her since they were eleven years old.
They never said it to her face, of course. They weren’t cruel. Nor did they ever want to offend the only daughter of one of the most powerful families in the wizarding world. But behind her back, they were pretty ruthless.
It started a couple of months into their first year when all the Slytherins in their year were planning to go to the Black Lake Friday night after dinner. Sure, it was breaking almost every rule Hogwarts possibly had, but there was no more effective way to bond with a bunch of kids your own age than to go see if the legend of the Giant Squid was real.
“Do you want to come with us?” Regulus asked her as Evan explained where everyone was going. She was sitting on one of the tables in the Common Room, doing her homework and she gave them a confused look.
“No.” They were taken aback by her abruptness, but tried not to let it show. “Are you stupid? You’re breaking almost every rule, it’s freezing, and we have a Charms essay due on Monday.”
“It was just a question,” Evan murmured under his breath while Regulus tried to muster up a smile and hope she didn’t hear his idiotic best friend.
“No worries,” Regulus said, “good luck with your essay.” And they walked out of the Common Room. They shared a look as soon as the door shut behind them and they couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
It was Regulus who began shushing Evan, suddenly remembering that it was way past curfew and if the Prefects found them, they’d have detention for the rest of the year.
“She’s uptight, isn’t she?” Evan scoffed as they made their way to the Great Hall.
“Was just trying to be nice,” Regulus said.
“Exactly!” Evan exclaimed. “We didn’t have to invite her, it’s not like anyone else in the year wants her there.”
Regulus thought his friend was being a bit harsh, but really, he couldn’t say he was wrong. She had friends in their year, but Regulus was willing to bet that most of them only stuck around with her for status. To be fair, it was the main reason he and Evan had asked her in the first place. They were sure no one had asked her and they were sure she’d be super grateful to them for inviting her, and maybe, they wouldn’t mind being on her good side.
Obviously they were wrong.
“Wish I could say the same.” She gave them both a sarcastic smile and took her seat opposite Regulus.
The old guy who used to sit in front of Regulus was his and Evan’s favourite coworker. He could barely hear the two friends chatting about anything but work all day, and he was always happy to be included in the joke whenever they decided to have a bit of fun with him.
They had a feeling that she wouldn’t feel the same way.
They were sad to see the old man go, but they couldn’t lie and say they weren’t interested in who was going to replace him.
“Maybe it’ll be some hot chick,” Evan said, swinging around in his chair to face Regulus. Sure, it was a pain for them to be seated with their backs to the other, but at least they were in close proximity.
“What? Like you’d have a chance with a hot chick?” Regulus chuckled, also swinging around in his chair.
“I’d have more of a chance than you,” Evan teased, bringing the end of his quill to his mouth.
Unfortunately, it was not some hot chick.
“What brings you here?” Regulus inquired, raising his eyebrow as she brought out a bunch of stuff to place on her desk. Evan was kicking the back of his chair and he tried to ignore it as she gave them another tight lipped smile.
“A job.”
Evan gave his chair a harsh kick and Regulus smirked.
“There’s our ice queen.” Evan leaned forward to murmur in Regulus’ ear, covering it up with a horrible cough that earned him an eye roll from the girl opposite Regulus.
She earnt that nickname not even a week after the invitation episode.
Evan and Regulus had practically been friends since birth, so it was no surprise that they spent most of their time together, and really, they couldn’t help it that they often got loud when they were together.
“It doesn’t surprise me that neither of you know how a library works considering you haven’t done a minute of work since we got here, but it’s a common rule that you’re quiet.” She seathed, standing over their desk, causing their laughter to die down.
“Excuse me?” Evan said, a dry laugh forming in his throat. It was late at night so it was only them and a few seventh years left at the tables.
“Sorry, I’ll dumb it down for you,” she said sarcasticaly. “Shut up.” Regulus couldn’t help the laugh that spilled out of his mouth and Evan wasn’t much better and soon, their laughter was louder than it originally was.
She scoffed at them and rolled her eyes, before walking back to her desk and collecting her things. She stormed out of the library but before she did, she made an effort to stop by their desk and send them the iciest glare she could muster.
“What’s up her ass?” Evan scoffed once she was out of earshot.
“Did you see that glare she gave us?” Regulus laughed and Evan’s laughter picked up again.
“Might start calling her ice queen, Merlin.” Evan shook his head and leant back in his chair.
The name stuck. Because neither of them really understood why she was so icy. And stuck up. But they knew she was arrogant, and spoiled, and rude, and uptight, and therefore, an ice queen.
If Regulus was being honest, he wasn’t sure how he felt about her coming to work at his dream job.
She had taken Quidditch Captain from him, she beat him at being top of the grade, and she got Head Girl when Regulus didn’t get Head Boy, and now, here she was, sitting across from him at the one thing that kept him going throughout all of that, acting as a constant reminder of all of this.
Regulus knew since he was in his third year that he wanted to be a potions maker. Sure, when he had this in mind, he never pictured he would be sitting at a desk for most of the day, writing new recipes and notes for future potion ideas, but he was enjoying every second of it. And it only got better when his best friend told him that he would be organising the supplies for the same company.
They had been doing this for 2 years now, almost three, and it had been two of the best years of his life. Up Until now.
“So you’re making potions?” Regulus already knew the answer, but he needed to confirm that he would be partnered with her.
“Is that a problem?” She raised an eyebrow at him as she placed her bag next to her desk. She had placed a small plant on the corner of her desk next to her drink bottle, some parchment on the other side along with her quill that would have cost a fortune with the way her name was engraved on the side, as well as a small clock that's tick was already getting on the two boys’ nerves.
“Not at all,” Regulus shrugged, folding his arms across his chest and leaning back in his chair hoping that his demeanour looked like one that confirmed his lie.
Sure, maybe the old guy kept messing up the potions because his eyesight was so bad he would get powdered bicorn horn confused with mint, but he let Regulus take the lead and Regulus had a pretty strong feeling that she wouldn't feel the same.
While maybe she was Head Girl and Regulus wasn’t Head Boy, they had been Prefects together in their fifth and sixth year and she had been his Quidditch Captain for three years, so Regulus was all too familiar with her control issues.
“What are you eating?” She had asked when he pulled out a muffin he had wrapped in a napkin and stuffed into his robe for tonight, specifically.
“A muffin,” he shrugged, pulling the wrapper down and taking a bite. It was their first round as Prefects and Regulus wasn’t sure how he was going to survive another two years of her.
“You can’t do that.” She stopped in the middle of the hallway and folded her arms.
“Who says?” Regulus shrugged his shoulders and took another bite as he stopped in front of her. She scoffed.
“We’re Prefects, we need to set an example.”
“I’m pretty sure students are allowed to eat the muffins the House Elves make for them.” He rolled his eyes.
“Not when dinner is over.”
“It’s a muffin, relax.” Regulus exclaimed, taking the last bite and stuffing the wrapper back into his pocket.
“I can’t believe I have to spend the next two years doing this with you.” She grumbled, hitting him with her shoulder as she pushed past him and kept walking.
“Me neither,” he grumbled, following behind her and pushing down the urge to say something mean to her. It would only lead to a fight and like she said, they’d have to spend the next two years together doing this, there were plenty of future opportunities for fights.
Besides, Regulus would never hear the end of it if his mother ever found out he was mean to the only daughter of one of the most noblest families in the wizarding community.
That night when Evan asked how it went and Regulus recalled the muffin episode Evan laughed and exclaimed exactly where he’d like to shove that muffin and Regulus was glad he at least had Evan to understand the pain of spending that much time with her.
“Why’d you have to get a job here?” Evan queried, and Regulus’ lips tugged upwards at his friend's lack of a filter.
“Well I didn’t know you two would be working here otherwise I wouldn’t have applied.” She sighed, as if this was the worst thing to happen to her.
“And if I knew you were applying here, I would have resigned,” Evan mumbled under his breath with the intention of only Regulus hearing, but her head snapped up at him and he was suddenly on the end of one of her icy glares and Regulus couldn’t help but chuckle.
It wasn’t that they wanted to be mean to her. They were constantly balancing the thin line between being their usual arrogant selves and actually being mean to her.
Their lives would be over if they ever actually offended her and this they were sure of. If she didn’t end it for them, her parents would be right there, ready to finish the job. They had seen it happen in their fifth year.
They only ever heard it from a friend of a friend, but the story went that the Ravenclaw Prefect had asked her out on a date and when she said no, his ego was bruised and he kept pestering her until finally, he got so annoyed that he hexed her. The hex he cast depended on who you asked. Some said it was the twitchy ears hex and some said it was the stickfast hex, but Regulus and Evan had a bet it was the horn tongue hex because she probably sounded just as annoying as a horn when she no doubt repeated ‘no’ over and over again.
But while this was all speculation, it was a fact that after her parents came to Hogwarts to speak to Dumbledore about the incident, no one saw the Ravenclaw Prefect again.
His friends couldn’t contact him and someone else was elected the new Ravenclaw Prefect.
“Evan,” the boss called out, “I need our order for next month.” Evan turned around and got up, his parchment in hand as he brought it over to their boss.
“Good luck,” he murmured to Regulus before walking away and Regulus raised his eyebrows at him in contempt at the situation.
She was watching them, a bored look on her face as she crossed her arms over her chest and tapped her fingers on her forearm, seemingly waiting for what Regulus wasn’t sure.
He looked at her expectantly and she sighed.
“So, what are we doing?” The way the office was set out was that their desks were touching each other, forcing them to face the other. Evan had his own desk that was facing another coworker who dealt with sales meaning his and Regulus’ chairs were back to back.  The other coworker wasn’t often in due to the nature of his role and Regulus was feeling a little envious of Evan right now.
On one side of the room were two doors, one that led to the boss’ office and one that led to the safety manager's office. On the other side, was the Potion brewing room, Regulus’ favourite room, and the break room, Regulus’ second favourite room.
It was only a small building, but there weren’t many people to occupy it and really, Regulus couldn’t complain. He was working with his best friend doing the job of his dreams and she was not going to ruin this.
“I know what I’m doing, shouldn’t you know what you’re doing?” He gave her a cheeky grin and she grimaced back
“When I arrived she said Mr Black would tell me what I’d need to do, so I can always go and tell her that you don’t know how to do your job, if that’s what you want?” She gave him an innocent look and Regulus’ grin dropped. He sighed dramatically, swivelling in his chair and tapping the end of his quill on his desk.
“Fine,” he huffed, “I’m working on a potion that can cure general symptoms of sickness. Muggles have a drug for it, but it doesn’t work for all illnesses, but we’re sure we can make it better.”
“So why haven’t you?” She asked, leaning forward so her elbows were resting on her desk. Regulus resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
“Well we think we have all the ingredients right, but as soon as we add billywig sting slime it starts to burn.”
“Just put some wartcap powder in it then.” Regulus wouldn’t admit it, but he was impressed she had thought of that straight away. He didn’t think of it until a week after his potion had burst into flames right in front of him. But then again, there was a reason she was top of their grade, and now he knew it wasn’t because her parents paid the school.
“Yes, but that counteracts the effects of the fluxweed.”
“Oh.” She hummed, trying to think.
“Do you have a list of the ingredients and methods you’ve tried?”
Regulus passed over his parchment and watched as she tried to make out his scribbles that held all of the work he had done in the last three weeks condensed into one page.
She took her time reading over it so Regulus took this chance to go over to the bookshelf behind her and get one of the textbooks to figure out what ingredient he could try next.
“Use vervain infusion instead of fluxweed, it still has the same healing properties, and wartcap powder won’t affect it.”
Standing behind her, Regulus slammed the book shut, put it away, and grabbed the piece of paper out of her hand. He wasn’t sure why. He pretended to read it over, but he already knew she was right.
How could he be so stupid? Of course. Vervain infusion. They learnt that in their second year. This was basic knowledge.
“Well I won’t be able to test it until Friday.” It was Monday. Brewing days were on Friday. If they were exceptionally busy, they could do it on Thursday as well, but they needed time to prepare all of the ingredients, do a risk assessment and get permission from their boss.
“Okay,” she dragged out the last syllable, “now what?”
“Think of your own potion.” He gave her a small smile and she nodded, standing up to grab a book and flick through it for some inspiration.
Regulus spent the rest of the morning filling out the forms for his trial on Friday. A part of him wanted the vervain to work because he had been working on this potion for too long, but another part of him didn’t want her to be right.
How embarrassing. Regulus had been doing this for two years and it barely took her twenty seconds to solve his issue for him, he’d never live it down.
She spent the rest of the morning flicking through her book, occasionally scribbling and occasionally sighing. Regulus couldn’t help but look up every few minutes or so. Mostly out of spite.
She was here, ruining his dream job and she didn’t even know it or even care.
And then there was the ticking from her stupid clock. Regulus wanted to grab it and smash it on the ground, but if he didn’t get suspended for that, he’d be fired and he wasn’t willing to get fired because of her.
“Oi.” He was brought out of his thoughts by a kick to his chair and he swivelled around to face Evan. “Are we going to the game on Saturday?”
“Can’t, it’s my brother's birthday.”
“And since when do you care?”
“My mother’s making him come over for dinner, I don’t know.”
“But it’s the semifinals.”
“I know, but I-” he was cut off by a scoff. “Are you alright there?” He queried, turning his neck to watch her look up from her book.
“I’m fine.” She smiled up at him sweetly and he rolled his eyes as he turned to face his friend and widened his eyes in annoyance.
“We’ll talk on our break,” Evan murmured and they both turned back around to their work.
So Regulus continued filling out the forms and when he was finished, he tried to think of a new potion idea that he could work on after he succeeded with this one.
His last one had been a medical related one as well, one that got rid of a stomach ache, and he was beginning to think that his mind was becoming fuzzy with doing the same thing over again and therefore needed a change.
This was probably the reason she had solved the issue immediately. She had new eyes, Regulus did not.
“What about an anti-acne potion?” She asked and Regulus looked up to make sure she was speaking to him.
“What, like ten second pimple vanisher, or blemish blitzer?”
“Yeah, but they always leave scars,” she argued and Regulus made an effort to keep eye contact with her.
“Well then there’s bubotuber pus and scar diminishing serum.” She huffed and Regulus was glad that he had this over her.
“It’s hard thinking of a new potion,” he said, unsure why he was trying to console her, “sometimes it takes me weeks.” He also wasn’t sure why he let her in on that piece of information, but she turned back to her book and Regulus turned back to his parchment, hoping that she wouldn’t talk to him again.
At twelve on the dot she looked up at him and Regulus could see out of the corner of his eye that she was trying to muster up the courage to say something.
After a few seconds, she did.
“When’s lunch?”
“Twelve,” he said, without taking his eyes off his parchment.
“Do we all have lunch at twelve?”
“Yes.”
“Do we have to go to the breakroom?”
“No.”
She wanted to roll her eyes at him, she wanted to thank him sarcastically for helping her, but she didn’t want to make things worse between them.
It wasn’t that things were bad between her and these two boys specifically, it was that things were bad between her and pretty much everyone.
She had always had trouble making friends and she knew most of that was her fault. If they weren’t too scared to make eye contact with her because of her status, they were annoyed with her because she was stuck up and had an overwhelming type a personality.
And maybe, Evan and Regulus liked to get under her skin and she knew she only gave them exactly what they wanted when she reacted the way she did, but they were adults now, working together in a proper job and she wasn’t going to be the reason this was ruined.
It wasn’t even as if they were mean to her. She was probably meaner to them. They always made sure their comments were just sly enough that hearing them without the tone they used could make them sound nice and she knew this probably had more to do with her last name than it ever did about feelings, but she knew the true intentions behind their words and she knew that they probably spoke horribly of her behind her back. She wasn’t stupid.
Nor did she care. She knew how she came across and she wasn’t trying to make herself pleasant for anyone’s likeness.
She didn’t want to be the first person to move for lunch, but she was starving and she needed to use her hour wisely. It’s scary starting a new job and even if she acted like she was confident coming in this morning, she had spent half an hour this morning debating on whether or not to bring a homemade lunch, or go buy it.
In the end she decided to bring a homemade lunch but was prepared to leave to buy lunch just in case that was what everyone did.
She wasn’t sure what Regulus and Evan were doing, but she knew she did not want to be with them in the breakroom. Alone.
She wasn’t sure if the boss would come in, but she had a strong feeling she wouldn’t. She had only met the safety manager once and she hadn’t made a move for the breakroom either so her chances weren’t looking good.
“Well, I’m going to buy my lunch.”
“Okay,” Regulus responded, still no one making a move for lunch.
“It’s twelve, so I’m going to leave now.” She grabbed her bag and stood up.
“Goodbye.” He heard her sigh, but he still refused to look up from his parchment until he heard the door click. Immediately he sat up and turned to face Evan.
“Cannot believe the ice queen is here, in our place of work, what are the chances?” Regulus was glad Evan was finding the humour in this situation.
“How long do you think she’ll last?” Regulus asked, as they stood up, went into the break room, and got their lunch out of the fridge.
“I don’t know mate, she’s pretty stubborn,” Evan chuckled as he placed his food in the microwave and set the timer. The low hum of the microwave was drowned out by Regulus’ laugh.
It was odd. They barely spoke to her at Hogwarts. They only spoke when they were forced to and probably more Regulus than Evan considering they were both Prefects, but somehow, Regulus and Evan were very involved in her life.
Not literally. She was just that one person that their conversations always drifted back to. It was probably because of her last name. She was practically royalty, or maybe more of a celebrity, so it was easy to detach the person from the body, especially when she acted the way she did.
When she’d sit by herself in the corner of the front row and sit by herself in the Common Room on the weekends, away from the rest of the people in their year who were happy to mingle. When they’d heard her say ‘no’ more times than they’d ever heard her say anything else and when rumours about her seemed to spread like wildfire in the school because it seemed everyone else had the same problem as Regulus and Evan.
It wasn’t to be cruel, it was just funny to them. She was so uptight and rigid and it was easy to get a reaction out of her. Besides, she always fought back just as strongly, so they didn’t see the harm in it.
When she was Head Girl and used to break up their Saturday night parties at 1am Evan would try to send her a glare as icy as hers while Regulus kept trying to get her to join.
“Maybe you’d be a little less stressed if you had some fun.”
“I will get Slughorn if you do not end this within the next half hour.”
And Evan and Regulus would roll their eyes and make some funny faces to the other while she turned her back, but they always ended the party.
“Just ask the Ravenclaw Prefect,” Regulus joked and Evan chuckled as they both rested their backs on the bench.
“I’d still pay a lot of money to know what happened to him.”
“I feel like the only way to know is to receive the same fate as him.”
“I’m surprised they didn’t obliviate our memory of him just to really seal the deal of craziness.” They stood there for a few beats of silence before Evan broke it again. “Oh well, at least she’s hot. She’s gotta be better to stare at than our old mate who left us.” Regulus made a considered movement with his head.
“I guess so.”
“C’mon,” Evan whined, “you don’t think she’s attractive?” Regulus hummed.
“I guess.”
“You guess?” Evan shot him an incredulous look. “She’s a pain but I’d do anything to get just one night with her.” He let out a mix of a moan and a groan that had Regulus giving him a funny look.
“She’d probably make you wash your hands before you ever got to touch her.”
“She’d probably watch me to make sure I cleared them right, but I’d happily do it,” Evan said as the microwave beeped and he took his container out. He mixed it around with his fork while Regulus turned to put his lunch in.
“And you really think she’d even agree to this?” He shut the microwave door and turned back around, the hum of the microwave once more filling the room.
“No way,” he scoffed, his mouth full of food, “but a man can dream.”
“I’m sure you do.” Regulus gave him a grimace and Evan nodded.
“I definitely do,” he confirmed. “I seriously can’t believe you don’t find her attractive, though.”
“I mean, if the offer was there, I guess I’d also take the opportunity to have a night with her.”
“That’s my boy,” Evan chuckled, moving to sit down at the small table, while Regulus stayed leaning against the bench with the microwave on it. “You know what though, I feel like you’d have a pretty good chance. More of a chance than me.” It was hard to take Evan seriously when he was stuffing his mouth with leftovers and so Regulus chuckled.
“What makes you say that?”
“You’re from a pretty noble family, you’re not unattractive and you’re pretty good at getting in girls’ pants,” Evan was pointing his fork at Regulus and Regulus shook his head as both of them recalled just how successful Regulus had been at getting into girls pants both in and out of Hogwarts.
“I don’t know, she’s like a whole other creature, she’s barely human.”
“Don’t doubt yourself Reggie,” Evan tsked, “I bet if you tried hard enough you could get in her pants in a month's time.”
“You bet, do you?” Regulus asked, the corners of his lips tugging into a smirk.
“Yep, I’m even willing to put money on it.”
“How much?”
“A hundred galleons.”
“Is that all? I’m pretty sure she’s going to hex me as soon as I go within five feet of her.”
“Fine, three hundred galleons.”
“Make it five hundred and you have a deal.” Evan shook his head, grateful that while he had a well paying job, he also came from a very well off family where this amount of money wasn’t a big deal to him.
“Really?” Regulus shrugged.
“Why not? Might make sitting across from her interesting.”
“Alright, if you get in her pants in a month's time then I’ll give you five hundred galleons and if you don’t, you give it to me.”
“Last condition,” Regulus said as the microwave beeped and he took his food out and brought it over to sit next to his friend. “Make it three months.” Evan gave him a look. “Come on, you know what she’s like. She’s not going to warm up to me after almost ten years of being the ice queen.” Evan sighed. “And besides, there’s Christmas and New Years in between that and we won’t be at work.”
“I feel like you’re setting me up to lose.”
“And you’re setting me to get my dick bit off, are you in?” Evan chuckled.
“I’m in.”
Regulus put his hand out and Evan reached out to shake it.
“Maybe her coming here wasn’t that bad after all,” Evan smirked, suddenly excited for lunch to be over.
Her break was spent a little differently. She had gone to the park across the street and sat at one of the benches eating the squished sandwich she had hurriedly put together this morning. When she walked in early this morning to meet her boss and some of the first words that left her mouth were, “You’ll be working closely with Regulus Black, I think you would have gone to school with him.” She knew this was going to be a shit show.
She had heard a rumour that Regulus and Evan worked together and she knew they were horrible together, she’d spent seven years of her life learning this.
She knew they didn’t like her and she knew they’d never admit it, but she also knew that she never had time for them and their foolish ways so it never really bothered her.
“He’s the other potions maker here and Evan Rosier looks after our orders and supplies, so at least you have some familiar faces.” She smiled at her boss thankfully as if those two boys would actually help her if she needed it. “So if you have any questions, get them to Regulus, he’ll be there to help you.” Sure, she thought, but she smiled and made her way out to see Evan already looking up at her and nudging Regulus. She knew when she applied that she would be working with someone else, it was marketed as a position in a team, but she never would have imagined who else would be in that team.
She spent the hour at the park, sitting on the bench and watching some of the children play in the park and she didn’t leave until a quarter to one, even if the walk back to the office was barely five minutes.
She didn’t want to spend any more seconds with those two boys than she had to, so when she finally got back to the office and put her bag back down by her desk, she started working again, even if she still had ten minutes left.
Evan and Regulus were still in the break room and she could hear them laughing and chatting, but as soon as her clock turned to one, the laughter stopped and they made their way out quietly of the breakroom and back to their desks.
She didn’t give them the satisfaction of looking up, but after barely a minute of silence, she felt Regulus lean over his desk so his head was closer to hers.
“Thought of any ideas yet?” She couldn’t help but squint her eyes up at him, why did he care?
“Not yet.” Was all she said and Regulus lent back in his chair.
“Well let me know if you need any help,” he said, before bringing out the applications he was working on before lunch.
“Okay,” she said, a hint of unsureness in her tone. They were weird words coming from the boy who just over an hour ago was reluctant to help her. Maybe the boss had spoken to him?
She raised her eyebrows and shook her head before going back to work, but she could feel Regulus’ eyes on her every few minutes. She wanted to scream at him and ask what his problem was, but she didn’t think it would be a good look on her first day.
No more significant exchanges were passed between them and her for the rest of the day. Occasionally Evan would kick the back of Regulus’ chair and they’d turn around and have a conversation. She wanted to roll her eyes and tell them that it seemed nothing had changed since Hogwarts, but she was trying to make a good impression.
Not only did she want to put the past behind them in this very adult job, she also wouldn't put it past the two of them to dob on her like they were school children again, so she was trying to be on her best behaviour.
At three on the dot, Regulus sighed and started packing away his parchment. He had filled out the forms for his trial on Friday and walked over to hand it over to his boss. When he came back, everyone was starting to pack up and so she followed suit.
She put her water bottle, parchment and pen back in her bag and turned around to put her book back on the shelf. When she turned back around, Regulus was standing in front of his desk, packed to go home, and facing her.
She tried to cover the funny look she went to give him by looking down to push her chair in, but she wasn’t sure she had been successful when she looked back up to see Regulus smirking at her.
“Did you think of an idea yet?”
“No,” she said, giving a curt shake of her head.
“That’s okay, like I said, sometimes it takes me weeks. Maybe we’ll get a request during the week anyway, so I wouldn’t stress about it too much.”
“Okay.”
“Are you going home now?”
“Yes,” she said, they were still standing in front of their desks. “Are you?”
“Yeah,” Regulus said, finally making a move to leave the office. Evan had already left which she found odd considering she was sure they were inseparable, but she moved to follow him regardless. “Well, apparate safely,” he said when they got to the door, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
What a strange boy, she thought when he apparated away without giving her a chance to say goodbye. She shook her head and sighed before doing the same.
She wasn’t sure what was going to come out of this job, but she had a feeling that it was going to be nothing less than interesting with those two beside her.

You don’t think you’ve ever sprinted so fast. As you clamber through the bleached doorway of the home, nearly scaring Asger out of his skin, you suddenly jolt to a stop. Luna peers from over your shoulder, clavicle pressed against your back as she tries to distinguish the cause of your rigidness.
Slowly stepping inside, you feel your knees tremble as doubt begins to seep into your veins. Asger shoots you a concerned look before filling a glass up with water and disappearing into Regulus’ room.
Luna carefully guides you to the table and you take a moment to lean against the beat wood.
“Are you going to stay here?” Her airy words were free of judgment, tone light and even as if she were simply asking you what tea you preferred. You wordlessly nod, barely reacting when the girl pats your shoulders and skips after Asger.
You run your fingers down your coat as hesitation nips at your nerves, a bubble of anxiety rippling through your chest and up into your throat. Hobbling steps echo distantly in your head, and you’re faintly aware of Anders’ approaching magic.
“You okay, kid?” His voice was gruff, but colored with understanding.
You hum quietly, still lost in your head. An unnerving silence roots itself in the room, and you hear Anders shift from leg to leg as he seems to grapple with himself for the right words.
“Alright.” He huffs.
You spin around and face the man, eyes widening at him before gluing to the open window across the room, “Alright? You don’t think I’m a coward?”
Anders rolls his eyes and limps towards you, placing a rugged hand on your shoulder, “Hell you thinking that for?” He moves to sit down next to you, “You’re a lot of things kid, a coward ain’t one of ‘em. Besides, I would do the same.”
Tilting your head, you swallow harshly as a prickly sensation wraps around your neck, “What do you mean?”
“If my Anne were to walk through that door right now, I don’t even know what’d I do,” He shakes his head with a wry smile, “Isn’t it funny that you can wish for something so desperately, but the prospect of it actually happening…”
“It’s unbelievable.” You add, watching as the man nods solemnly. You almost feel selfish for allowing your emotions to taunt you, knowing that you were being handed an ineffable opportunity that the man would kill for.
Before you can say much else, Asger cracks open the door with a resounding creak, slowly padding out with an unreadable expression, “He’s asking for you.”
Your eyes widen considerably at his words, and you turn to look at Anders for guidance. The older man simply jerks his head towards the door, eyes closing as an imperceptible smile tugs at his lips. He looked like he was making peace with something–but what?
Slowly making your way towards the commodious room, you feel your skin buzz and numb, mouth drying up as you gradually sink into a pool of uncertainty. As you cross the threshold, eyes set on the floor, you feel Luna slink around you with a little pat to your back, leaving you both alone.
As the door closes behind you, you slowly raise your gaze up.
“Hello, birdie.” Regulus’ smile is strained, as if he were pained, but his eyes are practically glowing under the light. He’s sitting up on the makeshift bed, arms resting in his lap as he slowly fiddles with the frays of the blanket.
A sob tears through your throat, muddling your words into an incomprehensible blubber as you practically fly towards the boy, throwing yourself into his chest. Your tears were no doubt pooling through the thin fabric of his shirt, but the onslaught of searing emotion only continues to flare as you feel him wrap his arms around you.
His arms. It felt so foreign, but so safe. You don’t think you’ll ever get used to him not being in a rectangular frame.
“It’s okay now, I’m here.” He whispers, hand running down your back as he soothes you.
You shift in his arms and lift your head up, broad tear tracks clinging to your cheeks, “Reggie…you remember me?” If you weren’t so doped up on a tidal wave of emotions, you would have cringed at how thick your voice came out.
The boy smiles at you softly before bringing a hand up to cup your cheek, “Wouldn’t be able to forget you even if I tried, love.”
A burst of affection threatens to demolish all of your sense of propriety as you gaze up at the boy, eyes furiously darting around his face to memorialize the tender emotion that paints his eyes.
You rest your head on his shoulder and tiredly huff, feeling him shiver under you as the cool air hits his neck. It’s only after the passing of a few beats of silence when you realize that you’re practically sprawled across his lap.
Gaping momentarily at the mortification that shatters your euphoria, you slowly shuffle off of him, “Sorry, Reg.”
The boy tilts his head in confusion before tightening his hold, gently guiding your head back onto his shoulder, “Nothing to apologize for, birdie.”
You take a few moments to compose yourself, gently sniffling as your tears begin to cease in intensity, only occasional droplets cascading down. Nuzzling into Regulus’ shoulder unabashedly, your voice comes out a tad muffled, “So do you remember everything then?”
The boy drops his cheek down atop your head, fingers drawing patterns on your hand as he hums, “It’s all a bit foggy, but I remember the vital things. Of course, the memories from when I was a portrait are more coherent than my childhood memories, but I’m mainly trying to remember how to articulate having a physical body.”
“You’re not doing too bad.” You tease, a light smile playing on your lips.
Regulus’ chest vibrates vaguely as he emits a small chuckle, “Oh?” The boy peers down at you before dropping his lips down to the top of your head. Your heart skips at the blatant show of affection, and you grow impossibly fonder of the boy.
“Thank you for coming back to me.” You whisper softly.
He slowly drops back into the capacious bed, drawing you down with him as he tucks you against his side, “Thank you for finding me…again.”
You laugh airily and drop your hand on top of his, suppressing your fluster as he effortlessly weaves your fingers together. The both of you lay together in a comfortable silence, a sudden exhaustion weighing on your chest as you listened to the rhythmic beating of Regulus’ heart.
You’re unsure of how much time has passed the next time you’re fully cognizant, eyes blinking rapidly to shake away the heaviness of your eyelids. It seems the lethargic state you were reduced to after your emotional reunion led you to a dreamless slumber. In your sleep, you practically glued yourself to Regulus, coming to a realization that the boy had somehow been shoved into the crook of your neck, now also in a peaceful drowse.
Brushing his curls away from your cheek, you run your fingers along his spine lightly, nails dancing along the clothed plane of his back. At your movements, the boy stirs groggily, a throaty grumble interrupting the atmospheric silence of the room.
You tighten your hold on him and grin when he blearily opens his eyes, head shifting to chase after the warmth of your skin.
“Morning, baby.” He whispers, nose nudging up against your jaw. His voice is scratchy and still marred by inklings of sleepiness, and you’re not entirely sure if he noticed the little pet name.
You bite your lip to tame the blinding grin screaming to escape on your face, bringing your fingers to run against his scalp, “Actually, I think it’s nighttime.”
Regulus huffs quietly against your neck, “Good, so let’s go back to sleep.”
You hum and open your mouth to agree, but the rumbling of your stomach cuts through the air. Coughing lightly, you ignore the blazing embarrassment that pins itself in your chest, choosing to instead continue your movements.
Regulus nuzzles against you again before slowly detaching from you, raising himself on his elbows as he hovers over you. You could see the sleepiness fade away from his gaze, and you bring a hand up to tuck a curl behind his ear.
“Let’s get you some food, birdie.” He mumbles, dropping down to peck your forehead.
The boy sluggishly stretches as he practically rolls off the bed, arms raised above his head as he yawns. You smile and begin to flee the cozy confines of the blanket, readily moving away from the warmth to stick by Regulus.
“Do you want some tea?” You ask, keeping a careful watch to make sure he wouldn’t promptly collapse into a weak heap of flesh and bones. Luckily, it seemed that the boy was gradually gaining strength.
Slowly pulling the door open, you peer out into the bleak twilight illuminating the house and sigh when you see that the others aren’t around. As you make your way to the cupboards, hands deftly flying about to quickly make some tea for the both of you, you feel Regulus wrap his arms around you.
“Look at us being bloody domestic.” He murmurs, knocking his head gently against yours.
You feel the blood rushing through your ears as you direct all your energy towards making sure you don’t accidentally break anything, too overwhelmed by the affection.
You clear your throat as you put the kettle on the stove, leaning back against the boy, “Not that I hate it, actually, quite the contrary, but I didn’t peg you as an affectionate person.”
Regulus draws patterns on your arms as he muses, “Hm, ‘m usually not. Just for you, I suppose.”
You were sure you were about to go into cardiac arrest, one hand flying up to make sure your heart wasn’t attempting to fly out of your chest. You turn around to face the boy, eyes wide with uncertainty, “Just me?”
The boy looks back at you with an assured gaze, smiling dopily at you, “Yes, just you, birdie.” You mirror his smile and nod slowly, still unsure of what to say.
Before either of you can escalate the situation further, the loud whistling of the kettle rings through the air, its shrill screeching causing you to flinch back. You muffle a laugh behind your hand and watch as Regulus blinks in disorientation for a moment, shooting a look of mock irritation at the steel instrument.
“No, please continue,” a brassy voice rings out from behind you both. You peer around Regulus to see Asger giving you a stare laden with impassiveness. Smiling impishly at the unimpressed man, you simply avert your gaze to the kettle next to you before glancing back at him, “Tea?”
As the breezy coat of nightfall loomed in the skies, you all decided to head out for a small trek to a pier nearby. Luna skips ahead of you and Regulus, leading your small group, as she scurries around to look for unique stones. Anders and Asger were trailing the three of you, both men walking in a comfortable silence.
A crisp wave of wind soars through the air, dotting your nose with coolness. Regulus has his arm looped with yours, eyes drinking up the sight of the environment around you, shining in disbelief and awe.
A flicker of sadness lingers in your heart as you ponder about how muddled everything must have seemed to him when he was a portrait, time gelling together into indistinguishability. You weren’t sure which fate was worse: becoming an inferi or being stuck as a portrait.
The echoing of your footsteps on the wooden dock sound through the night with a woody hollowness, eyes trailing up the pier and towards the inky pool of water around you all. You feel Regulus tense beside you, and you stop in your tracks to study him.
His eyes are glassy and unfocused as he stares into the darkness of the water, body rigid as an internal turmoil seems to paralyze him. You want to smack yourself over the head with a bludger — Regulus was uncomfortable with the murky surroundings because it was reminiscent of his demise.
Tugging at his arm, you slowly guide him away from the dock, shaking your head when Anders glances at your retreating forms. Regulus slowly floats back down to you, eyes no longer as dim.
“I’m sorry. I totally forgot.” You mutter, hands reaching over to comfort him. The boy looks devastatingly vulnerable in his state, an anxious frown creeping up on his face. He had always been so strong for you, it was easy to forget that he wasn’t insusceptible.
He shakes his head and subconsciously leans towards you, arms slowly lifting up to wrap around your frame, “No, I didn’t even realize myself.” His voice is faint, seeming to be tucked away behind his brief panic.
“Do you think you’re okay to travel, Reg?” You whisper, hands crawling up his shoulders to brush against his neck. The boy looks at you in confusion, but nods firmly.
Sighing, your hands rest on either side of his face, thumbs swiping against his cheeks, “When I went back to the cave with Anders to retrieve you, we accidentally encountered Voldemort.”
Regulus’ words nearly jumble together at the news and his mouth drops open, “You bumped into the Dark Lord?”
Grimacing at the wording, you shake your head, “Only briefly. He could only see me, but I’m apprehensive to stay here long. I don’t want to endanger the Fiskes.”
“Where will we go?” He mumbles with furrowed eyebrows.
You bite the inside of your cheek and divert your attention to the stars causing Regulus’ eyes to flicker around your face, “Birdie, what does that look mean?”
Hesitating for a few moments, you consider all of your options before speaking.
“Reg, maybe you’d be safer here,” you reluctantly voice, “I mean, where I’m thinking…it’s too hampered by uncertainties.” You frown, eyes meeting his gaze to try and implore him to see your reasoning. It was not an outlandish assumption in your eyes, as bringing him with you would mean answering inexorable questions and integrating him back into society amidst a full blown war.
Regulus recoils as if you’ve slapped him, eyes wide with shock that rapidly bleeds into outrage, “You don’t actually think I’m letting you run off alone, right?” His voice is taut, bordering coldness, and you shakily exhale as your mind races.
“You’re still recovering, Reg. Your magical core is still-” You begin to sputter, but Regulus shakes his head, and it has your words flushing away in a sweep of uncertainty.
He shifts impossibly closer to you, eyes softening as he rubs your back, “I know that you’re concerned, birdie, but I want to be with you. I’m sorry that I got snippy with you right now, but this isn’t negotiable.” He frowns and leans over to nudge his nose against yours, “I’ll follow you to the ends of the world—wherever your heart desires, but I’m not leaving you to your lonesome when the Dark Lord is on your tail.”
“If you come with me, it won’t be easy.” You breathe out.
He smiles and tilts his head to the side, “All the more reason to follow you, then.”
You assess him for a few moments before nodding, rolling your eyes playfully at the satisfied glint in his eyes, “Stubborn one, aren’t you?”
Regulus hugs you to his body and muses, “Well, someone needs to keep your self-preservation in check.”
As the stars slip away from the canvas of the sky to give room to the rising sun, you all gather inside the house, surrounding the dining table. You had to practically mandhandle Regulus into your usual seat as there weren’t enough chairs, but the boy only gave in once you compromised to share the seat with him.
Luna periodically flashes the both of you grins, eyes shooting off through you as she tangles with visions of the future. Anders leans back in his chair to stare at Regulus, seeming to appraise his worthiness. Asger simply sips his tea and awaits for the conversation to ensue, humored eyes peering at you all over the rim of his cup.
“Anders, I think that we should leave now,” you pause to clear your throat, “I don’t want to intrude and I hate the thought that I’m endangering you both, now that Voldemort is on my trail.” You word-vomit, hands fidgeting anxiously in your lap.
Subtlety was not your forte.
Regulus brings a steady hand to rest on your jittery ones as Anders grunts, “I understand, kid. You do know that we don’t mind though, right?” He raises an eyebrow at you when you don’t respond, “But I get it.”
You breathe out in relief and straighten up in your seat, “Thank you, Anders, truly. This whole experience has been life changing to say the least, and I think I’m going to miss you both, honestly.”
Both men meet your eyes steadily, and Asger breaks out into a small grin before placing his cup down, “I think we’ll miss you guys more, right Dad?” He turns to the older man, who merely grunts and looks away, but you would bet galleons that you saw a smile flash across his face.
Anders slowly pushes himself up and walks off into his room, emerging moments later with a satisfied expression, “Here, kid.” You slowly rise up in confusion as Anders extends a stack of clipped papers towards you.
“What?”
The older man shakes his head and drops back down into his seat, “You didn’t think I’d actually publish someone else’s research, did you?”
You hug the papers to your chest and gape at the man, “But, a lot of this is your research now. Besides, why would you…” You trail off, still boggled by a storm of perplexion.
Anders waves you off and rubs his knee, “It's our research, kid. Anyway, I never intended to write it for myself in the first place, I’m much too old to get caught up in the academic world again.” He looks up at you with a proud sheen in his eyes, “Besides, you did most of the rune work and connection of theories. You better make something of yourself, yeah?”
You are rendered speechless at the blatant display of care from him, and you find yourself wrapping the older man up in a hug before you can stop yourself. The man pats your back as you whisper hushed words of gratitude.
You were practically holding your future in your hands.
As the sun breaks over the veil of morning twilight, dispersing the ground of its mist and biting chill, you all stand at the edge of the village. It is bitterly nostalgic for you, mind flashing back to all those months ago when you stumbled upon Asger during the peak of night.
Regulus stands back, now sporting one of Asger’s oversized corduroy jackets (a deep green, in slytherin fashion, and he looked offensively good in it). He watches as you and Luna say your final farewells to the father and son duo. Luna and Asger chat idly, with the older man patting the girl’s head fondly, smiling when she passes over a large blue stone to him.
Turning away from the pair, you smile sadly at Anders, the older man already facing you with a calm expression, “Stay safe, kid. Tom won’t know what hit him.”
You flash an assenting smile at him before stepping forward to give him one last hug. Closing your eyes, you are rendered inarticulate with poignance, “I’m gonna miss you, old man.”
He pulls back and pats your shoulder reassuringly, “We’ll be alright, I think it’s time little old me did some soul searching.”
Frowning in confusion, you lean back to ask, “How do you mean?”
“Reine has treated us well all these years, but Asger and I were thinking of a change in scenery.” The man avows calmly.
You step back and clutch the research papers tightly in your hands, “We’ll see each other again, right?”
Asger swoops in and swings an arm over his father’s shoulders just as Luna bounces over to your side, hand clasping yours. The younger man grins at you brightly and inclines his head, “Who knows? We’ll be okay though,” he raises his head and his eyes grow serious, “but we want to thank you. You’ve given us a lot to think about, and I think it's time we celebrated my mother’s life instead of stewing in static.”
You nod, mouth betraying just how sentimental you felt as it tugged into a frown, “Go well, both of you.”
Anders cracks a small smile and they both wave you off.
“Give him hell, kiddo.”
“Take care of yourselves.”
Wordlessly, you spin on your heel and walk towards Regulus with Luna in tow, the boy reaching towards you as you approach. In a blur, you’re interlacing your fingers with his and apparating away, the warping taking your mind away from any lingering sadness.
As you touch down on smooth pavement, you feel Regulus shift closer to you, swaying ever so slightly on his feet. After steadying the boy, you turn to take in the sight in front of you — Zabini Manor. White pergolas embellished with thick grape vines curtaining the structure were erected serenely on the clipped lawn. Further back, winding balustrades, highlighted by Italian terracotta pots housing enormous clusters of begonias seemed to welcome you.
The regal property towered over your figures, so much so that you all almost ignored the faint popping sound that echoed from next to you in favor of drinking up the sight.
“Fiore be taking the Contessa’s guests to the parlor room.”
You swivel around and face the house elf, nodding mutely as you’re all led inside. Regulus’ decorum is impeccable, years of etiquette lessons and pure blood preaching seeming to still be instilled in every joint of his body. Luna digs inside of her satchel all the way there and you hear vague clacking and shuffling from the bag.
As the heavy wooden doors swing shut behind you, you feel your neck prickle with goosebumps as you release your magic, seeking out any familiar signatures. Your movements border robotic as you beeline to sit on one of the ottomans in the parlor, spacing out as you peer through the window and see rows of hydrangea bushes.
It was time to face reality.
Regulus slowly traces shapes on the back of your hand as he glances around, no doubt comparing the furnishing to the dismal designs lining Grimmauld Place.
“The brevity of peace is palpable these days, dear.” The euphonious voice breaches the threshold of the room before anything else, and you’re quick to school your face as the Contessa struts into the room, tobacco pipe clasped in one hand.
You stand up and smile diminutively at the woman, “Contessa Zabini. Apologies for the intrusion.”
She sends you a sharp grin before taking her place on an ornate armchair, “No need for the pleasantries, my dear. I must say that you are rather better company than those friends of yours.” She takes a quick hit of her pipe, crossing one leg over the other.
Masking your shock, you smile genuinely and shake your head, “I’m touched, Contessa. Which reminds me, I have failed to properly correspond with Blaise these past few months. I don’t suppose he’s tried to cajole those friends of mine for information?”
The woman exhales a cloud of smoke and hums, “Ah yes, Blaise was quite disappointed from what I hear, but of course we both understood your precarious position.”
“I’ll have to write to him soon, then. I assume that everything is well here?” You begin to fiddle with the corner of the papers in your lap, back aching minutely from your prim posture.
The Contessa brings a hand to rest on her raised knee, eyes momentarily flickering towards Regulus as she smiles, “Quiet and uneventful, my dear. Now,” she tilts her head to gauge the sight in front of her, “I see that you’ve found a friend.”
You could see the cogs whirring behind her eyes, mouth set into a thin line as something akin to familiarity seeps through the cracks of her expression. Nodding, you peer at the boy from the corner of your eye to observe his expression before replying, “Yes, he’s actually what I was referring to when I mentioned my personal interests.”
The woman, to her credit, masks her brimming curiosity well, eyebrows raising as she mutely encourages you to continue. Regulus clears his throat quietly, “It’s a pleasure to make your company, Contessa Zabini.”
The Contessa smiles pointedly at the boy and hums, “Well mannered…how interesting. The pleasure is all mine.” She places her pipe down on the round table next to her, eyes never straying from Regulus’ expressionless face, “Forgive me, but you look quite familiar, have we met before?”
Regulus raises his eyebrows in show, “I do not believe so, I’ve been in recuperation for a number of years now.”
She doesn’t seem entirely convinced but turns back to you with a delighted smirk as she continues to address the boy next to you, “I see. I do hope to get your name then as it intrigues me that you have the ability to convert someone—who the public thought to be a staunch Dumbledore supporter, into a neutral ally.”
Before either of you can respond, the doors practically burst off their hinges as they swing open. The thundering sound has you wincing from your spot, eyes immediately flying towards the source of the intrusion. Your mouth peels open at the sight of your friends and a very enthusiastic Sirius.
Harry immediately beams as he catches sight of you, but his eyes grow as wide as saucers when he takes notice of the boy next to you. Hermione looks exhausted by the commotion around her, no doubt having mentally aged a significant amount in the time of her babysitting duties while you were away. Ron blinks owlishly at you, and waves hesitantly, posture shifty as he averts his gaze to assess the undisguised glower on the Contessa’s face.
Luna jumps up from her seat and scurries over to greet the trio, her smile immediately drawing Harry’s attention away from you both.
Sirius chuckles loudly as he stalks towards you, arms splayed wide open as he goes to hug you, “Pup, you’re finally here!” You quickly hug the older man back, bewildered by his ability to immediately get tunnel vision.
As he draws back from you, your taciturn demeanor only heightens as you watch shock bloom across his face. The man springs back from you in a flash, eyes bulging out as he stammers for words at the sight of Regulus. The boy next to you gazes at his brother with regretful eyes, shoulders now sagging under the weight of the older man’s presence.
The fraught silence is interrupted by a disbelieving whisper from Sirius, “Regulus?”
“It’s good to see you, Siri.”

You were showing off your new owl to your mom, Euphemia, who smiled at the owl "He indeed is cute, what have you named it".
"Altair" you had exclaimed when James came running, more like dragging one of his friends.
"Mom, mom, meet him, It's Sirius" James exclaimed pointing at the other guy who stiffly bowed,
"It's nice to meet you Mrs. Potter".
Euphemia smiled pushing him up by his shoulders, "There's no need for such formalities dear". Sirius smiled, relaxing, then he glanced at you and smirked, "You must be the baby potter"
You turned at your brother glaring, "Baby potter", to which he just shrugged.
Turning to Sirius, you extended your hand, "I am Y/N Potter, one year younger, so not a baby".
Sirius chuckled shaking your hand, "If that pleases you".
Euphemia laughed, "Okay now, Sirius why don't you join us, we were gonna go for ice-cream". Sirius looked conflicted, "I would have loved to Mrs.Potter but my mother would kill me if I don't return back". Euphemia nodded, "Later then".
The rest of the shopping went by quick, you had brought many new books, like :-
"A detailed guide to mastering the first year " by Hana Dygh
"The Dark Forces : A Guide to self protection" by Quentin Trimble
with some other light reads. After you two had brought everything required, living and non living, you left the alley with a new member, Altair.
Tumblr media
You were packed for Hogwarts, standing at the station you hugged your mom, while your dad was telling James to take care of you, since he was the older brother, which james grudgingly agreed to, earning a light slap on the back of his head. You hugged your dad and told them goodbyes, promising to write to them.
You got on the train with James, who wandered through the cabins before stopping on one where two boys were sitting and talking. One of them was comparatively small, with little eyes, while the other was quite lanky, with was a strange scar running down his neck, he was to first to glance up.
"Hey Mate", they all hugged each other while you stood quite awkwardly at the side, "And this is my sis, Y/N", you shook their hands as they introduced themselves,
"Peter Pettigrew, nice to meet you"
"Remus Lupin, pleasure to meet you"
"Pleasure to meet you too", you said shaking his hand, there seemed to be a wound on his wrist too, it seemed fresh, like an animal's claw, was he attacked, however you didn't stare, instead moved to sit beside James.
The train gate was banged open, huffing wildly, Sirius was standing there grinning, "Hello Guys" he grinned, however behind him you saw the same boy you had seen at the pet shop, he seemed almost embarassred at Sirius's antics, more so as everyone's eye shifted to him.
"This thing here is the new pride of the noble house of Black, Regulus" Sirius announced patting his shoulder.
The boy, Regulus seemed to cower more in itself, glancing tensely, until they landed at you, stopping in recognition. You smiled extending your hand to him, "Y/N Potter". He gently shook it. "Regulus Black"
The train ride was quite tense at first but then, it slowly eased into a more comfortable environment as everyone began talking about their summer, you learned about the various books Remus has read, about Sirius's "evil" as he claimed mothter. However, Regulus sitting infront of you was mostly reserved, so you tried your best to open him up.
"I named my owl Altair, what did you name yours?"
Regulus seemed to be lost in a deep thought, before blurting "Vega"
"That's a nice name"
"Thanks" he uttered the lightest pink dusting his cheeks.
The dusk came soon as the sun dipped into the horizon. The train landed at Hogmeade station, which you looked at wide eyed, it was a beautiful sight, you had heard them talk about it but it was different actually looking at it.
"Open your mouth a bit more and it will fall off" James snickered, leading you to hit him. "Okay, zouwu, first years go by the boat, don't fall in the river"
Sirius snapped his head at you, "Zouwu"
James turned excitedly, "It's a really funny story, on-oomph" James huffed as you hit him again, and fell silent after you threatened him with an embarassing story of his. They all went to the carraiges while you and Regulus joined other 1st years on the boat ride.
The boat you were on consisted of you, Rgulus, a girl named Ismelda and a guy named Barnaby. The dark lake was pitch black, with only the reflection of lights hung on your boats.
Barnaby searched his pockets, "Do you want to see in the black lake, I have someth-" a splash echoed as he slipped into the lake, without thinking you jumped after him, in the icy cold water. Seeing only darkness, you wildly flung your hand until your hand graabbed his leg, holding it you broke the surface, barely able to keep up, you felt two pair of hands wrap around you pulling you and Barnaby up, who coughed and gasped.
Regulus looked at you, "Are you okay?"
Barnaby spluttered, "I'm fine", causing you to snort.
Soon both of you were dry with a swoosh of Professor McGonagoll's wand, who looked at you pointedly, something about potters always present during troubles, and led to the great hall for house sorting. One by one students were called and sorted, leading a cheer from their respective houses. Regulus went before you, sitting apprehensively at the stool.
"SLYTHERIN"
You glanced at Sirius, who visibly slumped, eyes glinting with dissapointment. Regulus looked relaxed but solemn. And soon your name was called, before the hat covered your eyes, you saw James giving you a thumbs-up with a wide grin. Sitting in anticipation, you waited in baited breath, suddenly a voice spoke to you, in your mind,
"Hmm, you seem to have a wandering mind yet its sharp, theres bravery, potential"
Thrn it was a sharp silence, and a loud cheer as your ears rang and you tried to make sure you had heard correctly,
"SLYTHERIN"

______
Remus and Sirius arrived back home after midnight to a quiet house. Sirius stood tapping his foot as Remus unlocked the door.
“I can’t believe you didn’t get me cotton candy.”
Remus rolled his eyes before opening the door.
“I can not help that the theater’s cotton candy machine was down. I promise we will go back next week and get you some.”
Sirius scoffed.
“I’ll take Y/n to a movie. She will get cotton candy too.”
Remus chuckled. He made a mental note to tell you that you needed to tell Sirius no more often. You treated him like some kind of pet, making Remus’ life difficult.
“You can be really annoying sometimes. You are aware of that, right?”
Remus said over his shoulder as he tossed his coat on the couch. Sirius was chuckling to himself as he moved to go get a beer out of the refrigerator.
“Yeah, but you love me so there.”
Remus smirked while shaking his head. He was not about to feed into Sirius’ foolishness (no matter how right he was on the subject). A small envelope on the coffee table caught Remus’ attention. It had both his and Sirius’ names on the front.
Frowning, Remus walked over and picked the envelope up. Right away, Remus noticed your handwriting.
“Is she leaving us love notes again?”
Sirius asked, coming back into the room while shoving popcorn into his mouth. Remus rolled his eyes.
“She’s probably begging me to marry you so you don’t go get lost some place.”
Sirius gave Remus a cold glare as his lover tore open the envelope.
“To Sirius and Remus, By the time the two of you read this, I will be out of contact. There have been many things that I have been hiding and it is time that the both of you know. I have been dating Regulus for a while. We are running away together. This is the only way that we can be together and no one have a problem with it. Remus, I know you of all people won’t be happy. You are my big brother and I love you but you need to let me make my own decisions. If I was honest and told you that I was dating Regulus, you would have flipped. Please know that I am not doing this to hurt you. I hope, in time, we can meet again and put this behind us. I beg you to take care of yourself and I love you. Sirius, I want you to know that you were right about Regulus. There is more to him than some cold member of the Black family. He isn’t a death eater and no longer “drinks the family koolaid.” He and I….we are what each other needs. Regulus is still your brother and he loves you. I hope to see the two of you sooner rather than later. I’m sorry but I have to go.
Love, Y/n.”
Remus stared at the letter with his mouth open. Sirius shoved a few more mouthfuls of popcorn in his mouth before realizing that Remus had gone dead silent.
“Moony, what…”
“Y/n ran off with Regulus!”
Sirius stood motionless. He tilted his head as if he was trying to process what his lover actually said. Did Sirius hear Remus right? You ran off with Regulus? Why would you run off with Regulus? Did you even know Regulus? Sirius had never witnessed the two of you speak to each other.
“Regulus? Like my brother Regulus?”
Remus ran a hand through his hair, fighting the urge to start jumping up and down.
“How many other guys named Regulus do you know?”
Sirius held his hands up defensively.
“Just my brother. Why would Y/n run off with Regulus? Do they even know each other apart from us?”
Remus handed Sirius the letter. Sirius frowned as he read the letter, his eyes widening with each word. While he wanted to panic that you jumped ship with his little brother in the middle of the war…he couldn’t. Sirius read your words to him about “being right about Regulus.” Regulus wasn’t a bad guy.
“Regulus is still my little brother, after all.”
Sirius smiled at the thought. His little brother…the real Regulus…the boy Sirius adored so much was still in there. Sirius also smiled at the thought of you being the one who gave him this information. You would be good for Regulus just as Remus was good for him. Sirius could live with that.
“Sirius, say something.”
Remus ordered, feeling on edge. He didn’t know what he was going to do but he needed to do something. Remus was nearly ready to go run about the neighborhood looking for you. Sirius took a breath before speaking.
“Remus, I need you to breathe, mate. Look, I didn’t know about this either. I have my concerns but…they are like us. Maybe Y/n is good for Reg. Let’s give them a chance. Let them come to us.”
Remus paced around quietly for a moment.
“She’s my sister, Sirius.”
Sirius nodded before moving to put a hand on the small of Remus’ back.
“She will always be your sister but for right now Y/n is what Regulus needs. Trust me.”
(two weeks later)
The sound of a tea kettle whistling woke you up from a sound sleep. Yawning, you reached over to Regulus’ side of the bed. His pillow was cold indicating that he had been up for some time. You stretched with a smile before slowly getting out of bed and looking out the window.
You would never get tired of the sight in front of you. Everything was peaceful. Waking up in a quaint little cottage with a field of wildflowers near a lake was your own personal heaven. From the moment that you arrived at the cottage life changed completely. You had gone from being stuck in the middle of a war with no idea how the future would play out to pure blissful peace.
The sound of a small bang in the kitchen tore you from your thoughts. Regulus muttering “son of a bitch” made you smile.
Regulus
That was another thing that you couldn’t help but smile about. In the course of two weeks, you had seen Regulus make a complete change. Now he was no longer the brooding moody young man who always looked mad at the world. He smiled more than you had ever seen him smile before. You noticed how much Regulus being happy reminded you of Sirius. Happy was exactly how you loved seeing Regulus.
Your mind went back to the morning that you arrived at the cottage…
“This place hasn’t changed since I was a child.”
Regulus commented as he sat his bag down. You were looking around the cottage with a pleased little smile on your face.
“It's lovely. I can see why your uncle bought that place.”
Regulus nodded as he started looking through the cabinets.
“As much as Alphard loved our family, he loved being in peace that much more. He saw the cracks and crazy in the Black family. Thank Merlin he saw a way out and away from it all.”
You turned to face Regulus as he took off his suit jacket and started rolling his sleeves up.
“Now we can have our peace.”
You replied as Regulus’ grey eyes rolled up your face.
“Yes, we can. We can have our happily ever after without this stupid war or whatever garbage is going on back in reality land. Maybe in time, Remus won’t hate me for conning you into running away with me.”
You moved to wrap your arms around Regulus’ neck.
“You didn’t do any conning. I wanted to leave as much as you did. I’m not brave like my brother and friends. I don’t want to be involved in some war where people I love on both sides die.”
Regulus frowned before wrapping an around your waist.
“You are braver than you know. You left everything behind for some boy who never deserved a moment of your grace and love.”
“The boy who deserved all of the grace and love.”
You countered with a smile. Regulus leaned his forehead against yours. He didn’t know that you saw the happy smile on his face…but you did.
“Well..if you say so. You know, we’ve never had the opportunity to dance together.”
You couldn’t help the chuckle as Regulus slowly began to move with you in his arms.
“We’ve never had the opportunity.”
Regulus nodded.
“Now we do. Every day…anytime that you want.”
The bedroom door opening pulled you from your thoughts. Regulus stepped in with a small smile on his face.
“Sorry, I didn’t wake you…did I?”
You shook your head before moving to snuggle back into your boyfriend’s waiting arms.
“No…I heard you fighting with the stove.”
Regulus rolled his eyes.
“That damned thing is a menace. We might have to invest in a new one before I catch that one on fire. I see why Kreacher hated our stove at Grimmauld Place now.”
Regulus didn’t have to say it for you to know that he missed Kreacher. That was the only part of his family that he missed.
“We can get a new one whenever you want or you can let me do the cooking. I admire you for trying but I was born to cook on shitty stoves.”
Regulus rolled his eyes before looking back at the bed.
“You haven’t made the bed yet.”
You nodded.
“I just got out of it.”
Regulus reached out to gently push the strap of your nightgown off of your shoulder.
“We can mess it up a little more before you make it up…for the day.”
Wrapping your arm around his shoulders, you stood on your tiptoes kissing Regulus slowly.
“I love that idea.”
Right as things were starting to get heated there was a loud knock at the door. Regulus pulled away as you reached for your silk robe.
“Who the hell is that? We don’t have friends. That is the problem with visitors. They always come visiting.”
You grabbed your wand and followed Regulus down the stairs. Part of you was wondering if it was the friendly widow who lived down the road a bit. The other part worried that it was some member of the Black family to attempt to drag Regulus home.
“Do you have your wand?”
Regulus whispered.
“Armed and ready to go.”
You replied as Regulus moved to the front door. He was ready to hex whoever the hell it was to kingdom come and back.
The moment that he opened it, Regulus was shocked to see Sirius on the other side. Sirius stood holding what looked like a geranium in a tacky ceramic pot while Remus stood behind him looking super uncomfortable.
Regulus tilted his head to the side while you came to join him at the door. You were clearly as surprised as Regulus was.
“Hello?”
Regulus managed to get out while Sirius smiled.
“Hello, happy couple…I brought you a plant.”
Sirius held out the geranium to his younger brother with a grin. Regulus slowly took the flower with an uncomfortable expression.
“Um, thanks. How did you two find us?”
Sirius glanced over his shoulder praying that Remus had listened to that whole “be nice and don’t strangle him” talk.
“Can we come in?”
You moved aside as did Regulus. Sirius and Remus walked in closing the door behind them.
“Did you two steal this from the old woman down the street? I saw her potting this plant last week.”
Regulus commented before sitting the geranium down. Sirius shrugged.
“She won’t miss it. So….here we are and here you are.”
Regulus nodded, sitting down.
“Yes. Here we are. Again, how did you find us?”
Sirius grinned.
“Uncle Alphard told me after I wrote him.”
“How long?”
Remus finally commented. Both Regulus and yourself turned to face your older brother. You could see the unease in Remus’ eyes. How he was remaining calm was a mystery.
You placed a hand on Regulus’ shoulder before speaking to Remus directly.
“Two years.”
“Two years!!?? The two of you have been dating for two years and no one said a word. Y/n, this is big. You could have married this man by now…wait, you two aren’t married are you?”
Regulus raised an eyebrow before holding up your hand that had a diamond ring on it.
“Not yet but we will be. This is exactly why we didn’t tell you, Lupin. You are spazzing out and acting ridiculous. Family reactions are the reason why we didn’t say anything. My family would never accept Y/n and would potentially hurt her. You are…well…you are acting as I expected.”
Remus went instantly silent before muttering “fuck me” under his breath. He took a few deep breaths before speaking. Looking at your face, Remus stared at you hard for a few moments. No longer were you the little girl that chased after him always wanting to be part of her big brother’s activities. Now you were a grown woman with a life of her own…a grown woman who deserved to have the life that she wanted.
Regulus was busy watching Remus hoping the other man didn’t burst into a fit of tears. He was not ready to deal with that!
“I apologize…to both of you. You have to understand that is my only family left, Regulus. Outside of Sirius, Y/n has been my forever friend. It hurts knowing that both of you felt this was the only option…but I understand. I was wrong to judge your happiness. Y/n, is this what you want?”
You squeezed Regulus’ shoulder.
“It is, Remus. I love Regulus very much. He’s very good to me and I’m happy. I know you are worried but I want you to be happy for me. I found my person must like you found yours….your plant stealing person.”
Sirius giggled. Remus stared at Sirius before shaking his head.
“Yeah, my plant-stealing person. Fine, if you two are happy then I’m happy for you. Regulus, please take care of her.”
Regulus reached up to squeeze your hand that was resting on his shoulder.
“I would die for her.”
Sirius stood up clapping his hands together before going off in search of breakfast.
“Now that is out of the way…who is going to feed me breakfast? You two should have seen the mad dash we made to get here.”

She was sure that the world stopped moving. She was sure everyone had frozen in time but that couldn’t be true because her heart was still beating and this she was sure of because she felt it break into a million pieces.
Regulus wasn’t a physical person. He had never been in a fight before, but he wanted to be in one right now. He was seeing red. He was willing to destroy the entire world if it meant she’d believe that it was a mistake.
But he couldn’t deal with that now, so he forced himself to turn to her.
Her chest was rising and falling and her bottom lip was trembling, but her face remained hard.
“I-” He went to say, but he was speechless when he saw the look on her face.
He expected her to be angry. Maybe even just as angry as he was at Evan for telling her. He thought she’d curse him and yell at him. But he didn’t expect her to look so sad.
She took a deep breath in, closing her eyelids softly before opening them again.
“I’m going to go.” She reached over to grab her bag and Regulus found himself reaching out to her wrist.
She flinched away from him, as if his touch burnt her.
“I didn’t do it because of the bet.” He heard the words coming out of his mouth, but he wasn’t convinced he was the one who had said it.
She turned to him and he could visibly see her mind working.
“I called the bet off.”
“When?” She asked a little too quickly.
“After we kissed.” She had never seen Regulus so desperate. She had seen him nervous and unsure, but behind it there was always a layer of confidence that was currently missing.
“So everything else was a lie?”
She wasn’t going to cry. She couldn’t. Not when they were out in public and not when Evan and the random girl on his arm were watching their every move. But her voice still trembled at the end of the question.
Regulus didn’t want to lie to her again so he didn’t say anything.
She gave him a small nod before she stood up, her bag clutched tightly in her hand.
Regulus found himself copying her actions.
“Don’t,” she mumbled. Her eyes glued to the ground and her teeth drawing blood as she bit into her lip to stop herself from making a scene in the restaurant.
“Please,” Regulus begged, “let’s talk outside.”
She didn’t want to. She was ready to be her dramatic self and apparate out of there. But she worked with him. So she stomped outside of the restaurant, her arms folded across her chest to try to hold some heat close to her body.
“Let me explain,” Regulus said as soon as the cool air touched her face. He was hot on her trail and he stood in front of her, running a hand through his hair.
She didn’t say anything.
“Evan bet me to do it and I went along with it, but I really like you,” he stressed, “I think I-” he paused, “no,” he corrected himself, “I know I love you.”
She let out a small hiccup as a tear finally slid down her cheek.
“Don’t.”
“And as soon as we kissed I told Evan it was off and I didn’t want the money and-”
“But you accepted it?” Her voice broke as she could no longer hold back the tears now that she had been vocal.
“I didn’t!” He exclaimed, “I did, but he had to get a house elf to bring it because I wouldn’t take it and I was going to spend it on you.”
“Oh that makes me feel so much better.” Regulus almost breathed a sigh of relief when she yelled it at him.
“You have to believe me,” he said, “I told Evan it was off.”
She scoffed, sending him a dirty look through her tears. He was starting to blur up so she childishly wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, not caring if it smudged her makeup.
“Don’t try to blame this all on Evan.” She let out a dry laugh. “I’ve been telling myself this whole time that you’re nothing like him and you’re not.” Regulus didn’t like where this was going. “You’re worse.”
“No-” Her name fell from his lips and he lowered himself so he was at the same height as him. She was glad it was late so there was no one else outside with them.
“And when were you going to tell me?”
Regulus couldn’t look her in the eye.
“Of course,” she said, a small whimper escaping her lips, “you weren’t, were you?”
“Please.” He went out to grab her arm but she apparated away before he could touch her.
Regulus wanted to punch something. He wanted to punch the brick wall, but he knew it would hurt him more than it would relieve him and he wanted to punch Evan but he knew he couldn’t do that in public. Instead, he ran a hand through his hair, cursed under his breath, and apparated back home. Back to Grimmauld Place.
She spent the rest of the weekend feeling sorry for herself. When she got home she put the silencing charm around her room and threw herself onto her bed, doing the only thing that felt right and screaming into her pillow.
How could she have been so stupid?
Regulus walked straight up to his room and slammed his door, feeling bad immediately knowing his parents were probably asleep, but there was nothing he could do now.
Instead he laid down in his bed, his eyes wide open as he watched the ceiling, trying to tell himself to fall asleep.
Both of them spent the weekend in a similar state, neither of them wanting to truthfully answer their parents concerns so instead, confining themselves to their rooms, running over everything that had happened the past three months.
The only thing getting Regulus through the weekend was the knowledge that he’d see her on Monday. They’d be in forced proximity and he was willing to grovel and beg on his knees if it meant her forgiving him.
Similarly, the only thing getting her through the weekend was the knowledge that she had owled her boss on Sunday morning to tell her she had woken up feeling ill and wasn’t sure she would be able to make it into work this coming week.
On Monday, Regulus arrived early, just in case she was there early as well. He needed all the alone time he could get with her.
He considered owling her or even visiting her, but he wasn’t confident she'd even read an owl from him, and he didn’t want to visit her and have her parents answer. It would be too awkward for everyone involved.
At nine o’clock the boss and the safety manager walked in, giving Regulus a cheery hello before walking over to their offices.
He wasn’t entirely surprised she was late. While he had come earlier with the hopes of seeing her, she was probably planning on coming later so the opportunity to be alone with Regulus didn’t present itself.
Half an hour later, Evan had the audacity to show his face, but she still hadn’t arrived.
“Morning,” Evan muttered, loud enough for Regulus to hear.
Regulus did not reply.
“Look mate,” Evan started, rubbing his hand at the base of his neck as he walked over to Regulus’ desk. “I’m sorry about Friday, I shouldn’t have said anything.”
Regulus turned to face his friend, keeping his face hard. Regulus hadn’t spoken to Evan since Friday night and he was glad, he wasn’t confident he’d be able to remain civil. At least at work, he was forced to.
“C’mon,” Evan said, “you can’t be mad at me forever.”
Silence.
“C’mon,” Evan said, the corner of his lips tugging up, “I don’t want our last days to be spent in silence before you meet the same fat as the Ravenclaw Prefect.”
He even had the audacity to laugh.
Regulus turned back to his work leaving his friend to huff and roll his eyes before going to his desk.
At twelve o’clock, he came to the conclusion that she wasn’t coming in today. He ate his lunch at his desk, not wanting to enter the breakroom with Evan. He had nothing to say to him at the moment. And when Regulus left, he apparated without saying goodbye.
The next day, Regulus arrived their early again. But similarly, lunch time came and she had not showed.
He didn’t think it was like her to not come into work. The girl who had never had a day off her whole seven years at Hogwarts, even when her face was pale and her eyes tired. He wasn’t dumb, he knew it was because of him.
On Wednesday they held their weekly meeting and he was informed by Louis that their unlucky potion had been trialling well and he wished he could rejoice in the success of this with her.
“We’re sending her a speedy recovery,” their boss said as a final note before the meeting finished. She had told them that she was staying home sick for the rest of the week and Regulus was glad that she had told them because he was already losing sleep from the guilt and he didn’t really need to be waking up early to wait to see if she’d arrive.
So the next day Regulus filled out his forms for his colour changing potion, thinking about how lonely it would be tomorrow when he made the potion.
The boss had come and spoken to him. Usually they preferred two people working on a potion, and considering this was only a potion of interest and they had no deadline to meet, she asked if he would be able to wait until next week when she was back.
A part of Regulus wanted to say ‘no’. He didn’t want to have to work with her in such a confined space because he knew it would be awkward and he wasn’t sure she’d be nice. Not that he could blame her.
But another part of him wanted to thank his boss. Maybe it would be awkward, but it was a time they were forced to be in close proximity together and maybe, they could have an actual conversation about it.
But Regulus knew that this was a request from his boss, and really, there was no other option to agree with her.
“Of course,” he said, giving her a polite nod before they both went back to their work.
Regulus couldn’t wait for next week. He had to see her. Not seeing her made him feel worse. He had a pretty confident suspicion that she wasn’t going to take another week off work.
And he was right.
She had spent the weekend after Evan’s little confession feeling sorry for herself. She could never remember a time she had cried that much. But on Monday, she decided that she was actually going to leave her bedroom and she did. She spent the rest of the week doing everything she enjoyed in an effort to make her forget about the last three months.
But on Sunday night, she felt ill. Like she used to feel the night before she had to go back to Hogwarts. She couldn’t put work off any longer. Both because it wasn't professional and because she didn’t want Regulus to know just how much he had hurt her.
So she forced herself to get ready and even though her eyes were sunken and there was a hardness around her jaw that she didn’t like, she still apparated to the office.
She had to time this right. Regulus always got there on time but Evan never was. But if she got there on time, went and spoke to her boss to tell her she was okay and apologise about her absence, by the time she got back, Evan should be arriving and hopefully he and Regulus would be talking and ignore her presence.
When she got there, a head of black hair immediately turned to her. She could feel his eyes on her as he sat at his desk, but she walked straight into the boss’ office.
“Hi,” she greeted, ignoring the fear of having to sit across from him all day.
The boss greeted her and when she apologised for her absence, the boss told her she was being ridiculous.
“Are you better?” She asked in a way that made it seem like she didn’t believe she was ever sick, nor that she was feeling better.
“Yes, I’m well rested now,” she replied, a little too formally.
“Are you sure?” She pushed, as if she knew there was something bigger than illness bothering her.
“Of course.”
She heard a pop and then a familiar, “Morning,” so she excused herself and went back to her desk.
Regulus hadn’t looked up for Evan. He was pretending to write something down on a piece of parchment in front of him, but she knew he wasn’t because his quill wasn’t touching the paper and she could still feel his eyes looking up at her.
She got a textbook from behind her and put it on her desk, a little too loudly, before getting her own piece of parchment and started writing out some ideas for her own original potion.
She wondered what was happening with Regulus’ hair colour changing potion, but she didn’t want to ask.
Regulus must have got the memo that she didn’t want to talk. He really wanted to talk. But he understood that doing so in front of Evan probably wouldn’t put him anywhere closer to her good books, so he kept quiet and let his eyes flicker up at her every few seconds or so.
At twelve o’clock she stood up. Regulus had been eating his lunch at his desk because he was still angry at Evan and wanted to be a little petty. Evan had also started eating his lunch at his desk as well, apparently not wanting to sit in the room by himself.
At times he’d try to make conversation.
“Want to go out this weekend?” He’d ask and Regulus wanted to yell at him for being so stupid.
“Can’t,” Regulus would reply, “I’m busy.”
Evan rolled his eyes.
“Well when your panties aren’t in a knot, let me know and we can have fun again.” He’d say it as if there was nothing wrong. As if they were still best friends, and it made Regulus even madder.
As soon as she stood up, she walked out of the office and Regulus knew she was going to sit by the park she had sat at when she first started working here and was too scared to eat in the break room with them.
For a moment, Regulus wanted to go out and join her. It was a lot better than being in here with Evan. But once again, he wasn’t sure she’d appreciate it, so he let her go.
On Tuesday it was the same routine. She got there five minutes late knowing that if Evan was there, Regulus wouldn’t try to speak to her. At least he was smart about that.
And he didn’t as she made her way silently to her desk and got out the same textbook as yesterday. And at twelve exactly, she got her coat and her lunch and went out into the freezing cold.
She didn’t like eating outside. It made her think back to when she started and how naive and stupid she was. Regulus was the one who made her stop eating outside. But it was all just a joke to him.
She hated feeling this way. She knew her whole life that people didn’t appreciate the way she was so tightly wound up, that people made fun of it at her expense, but she thought that was changing now. In reality, she was still the same girl she was at Hogwarts, knowing that even though she was constantly surrounded by people, she didn’t really have any real friends.
On Wednesday she sat right at the front knowing neither Evan nor Regulus would sit beside her, but the safety manager did and she struck up a polite conversation about the weather.
She found out that her and Regulus would be making the hair colour changing potion on Friday and she briefly considered calling in sick.
She went back outside to have lunch. Regulus thought about saying something to her when she stormed past the two of them back to her desk, but she had walked off before he could even think.
“You know,” Evan said, leaning into his friend, “I miss when you two were together, she didn’t have such a large stick up her ass.”
Regulus pushed his friend with his shoulder as he walked back to his desk, unashamedly staring at her as he got out his parchment.
Thirty minutes before everyone went home Evan sighed.
“I have a headache, I think I’m going to go home.”
Neither of them looked up.
“I’m okay though, thanks for asking.” He continued, sarcastically. Regulus waved to him when he came out of the boss’ office, ready to apparate home, but she didn’t spare him a glance.
Regulus leant back in his chair and looked at her. She wondered if he really didn’t think she could see the way he opened his mouth and leaned in, ready to say something before he leant back. He did it another two more times before finally he got the courage to speak.
“We’re making that hair colour changing potion on Friday.”
She looked up at him and gave him a look that made him want to shrink back in his chair.
How could he just go back to work as if nothing had happened?
Regulus decided it was a catch 22. If he apologised he risked the chance of her screaming and berating him or worse, he risked the chance of her crying. If he spoke about work, she’d probably get offended that he was acting as if everything was normal between them.
He went for the safer option.
“Do you have a method?” She asked in a bored tone, going back to her work.
“Here,” he said, handing her a piece of parchment.
She didn’t look when she put her hand out to grab it so she accidentally touched his fingers. He could feel her tense at the contact, but she quickly snatched it out of his hands and went back to her work.
At five minutes to home time he gained another burst of confidence.
“Do you think we could talk about it?”
He didn’t like how she responded. He didn’t like that she paused before she looked up at him. Or the way that she slowly leant back in her chair and folded her arms across her chest. Nor did he like the look behind her eyes.
“Talk about what?” She challenged, making Regulus regret opening his mouth.
“About us.”
She rolled her eyes.
“We already talked about that.”
“You didn’t give me a chance to explain.” He had his elbows resting on his desk, wishing she would just listen to him.
“I did.” She scoffed.
“You apparated away.
“And I’m about to again.”
“I’m sorry, okay?” He exclaimed, his voice a little too loud for the confinement of this office.
She didn’t say anything for a minute. This was the first time Regulus had said sorry for it.
Regulus bit his lip as he waited for her to respond.
“Okay.” She said, standing up and grabbing her bag.
“Okay?” He said, standing up as well.
“Okay.” She repeated. She heard Regulus go to say, “Wait-”, but she apparated away before he could get out another word.
What else did he want her to do? He said sorry and she accepted it and now, she was ready to move on and forget everything she had learnt about Regulus Black.
The next morning Evan came in headache free but Regulus couldn’t say the same.
He had barely slept last night.
Surely this could not be the last of them? He felt their story was just beginning, it was cruel to have it end so suddenly.
He woke up with a dull ache in his head that was trying to convince him to go back to sleep, but it was almost the weekend and he couldn’t give up the chance to see her. But he struggled getting up and getting dressed and convincing himself that it was the right thing to go to work.
Especially when he arrived at work and realised he forgot his lunch at home.
He cursed himself, especially when he realised it would look like he was following her out to lunch. Which he would have happily done if he thought it was the right thing to do.
At twelve o'clock she stood up and took her coat and bag and made her way outside of the building.
Regulus waited ten minutes before he did the same.
There was a cafe just outside the building where he bought his sandwich, and a coffee, and a muffin because he had had a difficult week and he needed the treat.
When he came out of the building his eyes were drawn to the park across the street and as if they both knew the other was there, their eyes instantly found the other.
She was almost blurry because she was so far away, but Regulus knew it was her and he knew she had seen him.
He didn’t want her to think that he was ignoring her and figured he’d rather face a rejection than give her another reason to be mad at him.
He visibly saw her scoff when she saw that he was coming over, but he couldn’t turn back around.
“Can I eat lunch with you?” He asked, trying to act confident.
She was sitting in the middle of the bench with her bag on one side of her and she didn’t look like she was moving.
“No.” She said, turning to the side so she wasn’t looking at him.
She had a sandwich in her hand, but it was still full in her container, not a single bite taken off it.
Regulus sighed.
There was an empty bench next to her and without thinking too much about it, he sat on it and opened his sandwich, taking a big bite out of it.
“You’re so mature,” she said sarcastically, loud enough for Regulus to hear.
“You can’t control who sits at the park.”
She stood up. “Fine,” she said, “then I’ll just go back to the office.” She hadn’t moved yet.
“You’re so mature,” he said, mimicking her. “Just sit down.” She still hadn’t moved. “I won’t even talk to you.”
“Then why did you come out here then?”
To talk to you. He thought, but he knew it contradicted what he had just said.
“I don’t want to be up there with Evan.”
“No, you don’t get to try and bond with me over my hate for Evan, I hate both of you equally right now.”
Okay, that hurt.
“You probably more,” she mumbled loud enough for Regulus to hear.
“I didn’t mean to hurt you.” He was sitting at the edge of the bench so he was closer to her. She still hadn’t moved, nor was she facing him.
How could he explain to her that it was the truth? That he never wanted to lead her on but then the moment he realised he had led her on he realised it was intentional because she was all he wanted.
She was silent. Regulus could see she was fighting with herself and after a torturous minute of silence, she spoke.
“Why did you agree to it?”
“What?”
“The bet. Why did you agree to the bet?”
Regulus felt like he was entering a trap. Why had he said yes to the bet?
Because he thought it was all harmless fun? Because a part of him wanted to see if he could manage it? Because he and Evan probably would have had a good laugh over it if he did it.
“I know what you and Evan think of me.”
Regulus wanted to argue that she didn’t know what he thought of her because she wasn’t letting him tell her, but he let her continue.
“You think I’m stuck up and a bitch and you don’t think I know that I am?” She turned to him and Regulus had never seen her look so defeated. He always associated her with triumph because she was a winner. She won the house cup every year she was Quidditch captain, she was head girl, she was top of their class, she could do anything. And yet, here she was, looking like she had suffered a great defeat.
“I know I’ve never been easy to get along with, I-” Regulus went to cut her off. He wanted to defend her and tell her that he did enjoy spending time with her for those brief couple of weeks where everything seemed to fall into place, but she let out a dry laugh and said, “don’t try to tell me that you ended up enjoying spending time with me, I don’t care.”
Regulus shut his mouth.
“I feel so stupid,” she whimpered, before she finally turned around and started walking away.
It was sunny outside, but still windy and cold and when Regulus’ warm hand grabbed her exposed wrist she flinched, feeling as if she had just been burnt.
Regulus let go when she turned around to face him.
“I’m the stupid one,” he said.
“Yeah,” she said before apparating away.
Regulus cursed.
He wondered where she apparated to. Probably back to the office. But Regulus decided to give her her space and he went back to the bench he was sitting on and took another forceful bite out of his sandwich.
He really was an idiot.
But he wasn’t so much of an idiot that he tried to talk to her again that day. He decided to wait until tomorrow where they would be forced in the same room together when they made their potion.
She was already in the potion brewing room when he got there. She had her glasses on and Regulus didn’t feel right admiring the way it made her eyes wider, but he noticed it regardless.
A pretty pout was etched on her lips and he also didn’t think he had the right to admire that either, considering he was probably the reason for it, but he noticed it, regardless.
She was wordlessly getting the ingredients so he went to get the equipment. He helped her get the ingredients ready and then he started putting them in the cauldron.
Usually, she tried to get herself involved. Breathing down his neck and trying to get the ingredients before he could, but today she leant against the bench and let him work.
“Okay,” he said once everything was added, “we have to wait an hour before we can vial it up.”
She didn’t say anything. She was staring at the floor and Regulus decided to join her and lean himself next to her.
She scooted over and Regulus sighed.
“By the way,” she said, still not taking her eyes away from the floor, “we’re out of flowerhead. You can let Evan know.”
“Sure,” he said, wanting to tell her that he hadn’t really spoken to Evan since that night. But he didn’t think she’d appreciate it.
58 minutes to go.
They stood in silence for another five minutes before Regulus broke it. “This is ridiculous.” He wasn’t sure why he chose to say that. He put it down to the lack of sleep because when she snapped her head towards him, he knew it was the wrong thing to say.
“I’m so sorry my emotions are a bother to you.”
“You’re not a bother to me,” he exclaimed and she rolled her eyes at him. “I want to talk to you about this but you keep ignoring me.”
“No,” she said, pushing herself up from the bench so she was standing in front of him. “You want me to forgive you.”
“Yes,” he whined, “I do because I know I fucked up, but that wasn’t my intention.”
“Because your real intention was so much better than fucking up.” She had taken a step closer to him and it wasn’t until now that she realised whenever Regulus leant on the desk like that, he was the same height as her. She wondered if he was aware of this.
“I called it off as soon as I caught feelings,” he exclaimed, “what more could I have done?”
“You don’t get it, do you Regulus?” Her voice went down to a normal volume and Regulus closed his mouth. He liked when she said his name but right now, it didn’t feel right. “I don’t care that you called it off as soon as you caught feelings. I believe you did. I cared that you agreed to it in the first place because the only reason you did was so you and Evan could have a nice laugh behind my back, wasn’t it?”
Regulus couldn’t hold eye contact with her.
“Thought it would be funny to befriend me and get in my pants because who would want to befriend me and get in my pants, right?” She was awfully calm about it and that made Regulus uneasy.
She had made her peace with it. She’d gone her whole life feeling like no one ever really cared enough to get to know and maybe she was just destined to be alone. She couldn’t have it all and she was foolish to think she could.
“No,” he said, even though she was right, “I did it because I was dumb but then I got to know you and I-”
“But that’s the thing,” she said as if she was explaining a concept about potions that he didn’t understand, “without that bet, you never would have tried to get to know me.”
Regulus could see the sadness behind her eyes even with her glasses and all he wanted to do was reach out and grab her. He wanted to hold on to her until she understood that Regulus was convinced they would have gotten to know each other with or without this stupid bet.
“That’s not true,” he mumbled, finally looking up at her. “We became closer because we worked together and we were forced to be in this room and talk.”
“But you wouldn’t have been as nice to me,” she mumbled, her voice cracking at the end of the sentence and Regulus could feel his heart breaking all over again.
“Maybe it would have played out differently, but I still would have gotten to know you and I still would have fallen for you.” He stood up to his full height and took a step closer to her.
“You don’t know that,” she said, turning her head so he was faced with her cheek.
“Tell me what to do to make this okay, I’ll do it, I’ll do anything,” he stressed. He wanted to reach out and grab her hand but he already knew she’d only pull away from his touch.
She didn’t say anything and Regulus didn’t realise it was because she was crying until she let out a tiny whimper and sniffled.
“I just wish this never happened,” she said, her speech broken, “I wish you never said yes, I wish I never found out.”
Me too, Regulus thought.
“I really liked you Regulus,” she whispered. Regulus closed his eyes slowly as he heard her next words. “I loved you as well.”
Loved.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea for us to work together.” Regulus opened his eyes at that.
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t put myself through the torture of seeing you everyday, of seeing Evan everyday. You sit in front of me. I can’t do that to myself.”
“We can work through this,” he stressed, finally being overcome by the urge to reach out and grab her hands.
She didn’t pull away.
“We can’t,” she whispered. “I could forgive everything you said about me in Hogwarts because I thought you’d changed because I knew I had changed.” She paused. “But you never changed.”
“Please,” Regulus said. His voice broke and he tried to ignore the tickle in his nose as tears threatened to fall.
“I’m going to go.”
Regulus didn’t follow her out.
How could he when she ended it like that?
He assumed she went to the boss and told her she wasn’t feeling well before going home.
And that was what she did.
“Hey,” she said softly, trying to hide the fact that she had been crying. “I don’t feel well, I think I need to go home.”
“There must be something going around the office,” her boss said, not looking up from her papers. She hummed in acknowledgement. “Well, get better.” Her boss said, finally looking up at the girl in front of her. The boss noticed her wet eyes and red cheeks so she put her quill down to ask, “darling, are you okay?”
“I’m quitting.”

James Potter is the definition of a queer person that started out as a verry enthusiastic ally.
Remus and Sirius came out and he was like, "That's great! I support the gays!"
Then he saw Regulus and was like, "I support the gays so much I would date one."
