Wrong, the reasonable thing would be to modernise the ogham tmscript and beging reusing it for Gaeilge, it would better help enforce the irish alphabet and stop shit like zú and it wouldnt even be that hard because like 99% of the time you write its on lined paper so we just have to switch from between the lines to on the lines

What we know about the Ogham alphabet is wrong.
well, some of it.
We know that a lot of what the Druids practiced is shrouded in mystery because they didn’t use written word. We know they’ve been around since at least the first century BC, but a lot of what we know now is thanks to outsiders, especially the Romans.
That being said, there are modern scholars who have done their due diligence in interpreting Ogham, and there are many theories on what the letters refer to. Of course, the overarching agreement is that each letter refers to a tree, but I think it is important to recognize that that is technically wrong.
According to scholars like McManus, only 8 of the letters actually refer specifically to trees.
While this is true, it is also important to realize that the kennings often allude to trees or possibly allude to them.
A different scholar, MacCoitir, has re-interpreted the old-irish kennings, specifically in reference to trees.
It would certainly be nice to say there is one definitive and correct way to interpret the kennings and what their correspondences are, but the cryptic nature of the Bríatharogam lists leave things somewhat open to interpretation. Unfortunately, the most common Ogham list is based on evaluations of translations of medieval Irish into modern English. This standard list has not been challenged for a long time, but that changed in 2003 with the publication of Niall MacCoitir’s work.
What MacCoitir has done is return to the early legal tracts such as Bretha Comaithchesa, cross-referencing it with the oldest extant versions of the Bríatharogaim Maic ind Óc, Bríatharogaim Con Culainn and Bríatharogaim Morainn mic Moín. He also points out that much of the terminology surrounding Ogham refers specifically to the parts of trees/bushes, which is further indication that the alphabet is almost definitely a tree alphabet.
The letters themselves are referred to as feda or fid in the singular, which means respectively ‘wood’ and ‘tree’. The consonants are also called táebomnai, which translates into ‘The side of a tree-trunk’. The druim (edge/ridge) on which the letters are written was originally vertical, like a tree trunk, with the horizontal druim coming into favour with the use of paper or vellum. The spines or lines that comprise the individual letters (on the druim) are referred to as flesc, which translates as twig. So from the above terminology it is quite clear that the alphabet has a connection with trees and bushes.
Even with this knowledge, the most common Ogham lists include plants - vine, ivy, heather, fern, reed, and honeysuckle. Reed and fern do not have either a trunk or twigs, so we can immediately dismiss them. Heather does not have a trunk, and whether you could define its low, fine growth as twigs remains something to be debated. The remaining plants are not trees. They are parasitic in as much as they need a host to climb up – either a wall or a tree in most cases.
On the basis that the plants mentioned above are not trees and do not possess the qualities associated with the Ogham terminology one is left with the task of looking for viable alternative interpretations, based on the source material – which is exactly what MacCoitir has done.
From here, I will give a simple list of what should be replaced, and what the replacement is. If you would like to read why, you can find the post below
• Nin/Nuin - re-translated to ‘staple enjoyment or supply of the otherworld’, ‘boast of women’ and ‘boast of beauty’. The widely accepted tree for this is Ash, but MacCoitir replaces it with Cherry.
• Muin - re-translated to ‘Strongest in action’, ‘Most noble goodliness’, ‘Proverb of slaughter/rottenness’ and ‘Path of the voice’. Can also mean ‘neck’, ‘love’, ‘trick’ or possibly ‘thicket’. The widely accepted plant for this is Vine, but MacCoitir replaces it with Buckthorn.
• Gort - re-translates to ‘Sweetest grass’, Greenest pasture’, ‘Suitable place for cows’ and ‘Satisfaction of all’. The widely accepted plant for this is Ivy, but MacCoitir suggests Gorse.
• Onn - re-translates to ‘Wounder/helper of horses’, ‘Smoothest of Craftmanship.’ and ‘Sustenance of warriors’. The widely accepted plant for this is Ivy, but MacCoitir suggests Ash.
• Úr - re-translates to ‘In cold dwellings’, ‘Most devoted sharing’, ‘Propagation/dripping of plants’ and ‘Shroud of a lifeless one’. The widely accepted plant for this is heather, but MacCoitir suggests Elm.
Of the five supplementary letters, used for rendering Greek and Latin words, MacCoitir disagrees on two of the commonly accepted list.
• Uilen - retranslates to ‘elbow/angle’ and ‘most fragrant tree’. The widely accepted plant for this is honeysuckle, but MacCoitir suggest Juniper.
• Emancholl - re-translates to ‘twin of hazel’. The widely accepted tree for this is Beech, but MacCoitir suggests Hazel.
This list by no means is meant to replace the current meanings, but is meant to encourage a re-evaluation of the most commonly accepted Ogham list(s).

Ogam Divination Meanings from a Linguistic Perspective
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to prefix this guide by saying that I take a very different approach to ogam than many other practitioners do. I approach them from a linguistic perspective and gather context from the cultural perspective.
So if you are familiar with other divination meanings for the ogam these meanings may feel VERY different from the ones you've seen. That being said if you have questions about how I came to the meaning I did, please feel free to ask and I will explain the ogam in question to the best of my ability.
I align the aicme ('families') with the four fire festivals. This is my personal method, it is not based on any specific historical or linguistic data but it helps me bring more context to each feda.

Ogham Readings
Hello! As some of you know i am trying to raise money for top surgery, and after very careful consideration i have decided to offer ogham readings.
What is ogham?
The ogham alphabet is the earliest written form of the Irish language, originating sometime around 300BC. In the mythology, the alphabet was created by the god Ogma as a gift to humanity. Each letter has multiple associations, trees, birds, colors, ideas, and much more. This is an oversimplification of course, but the ogham alphabet is a key part of my practice. Modernly many Irish pagans use it for divination, charms, and artwork.
Using ogham is not a closed practice. Anyone is welcome to it, but it is very deeply entrenched in celtic cosmology and can only be understood in that context. This is why ogham readings can be a bit tricky to get the hang of.
What Im Offering
Ogham readings are a service i provide in real life to people in my grove, its one of my roles in our community. I'm new to doing this online, so feedback is appreciated! I am only comfortable giving readings to those over the age of 18. You do not have to be pagan or even religious to ask for one.
$5- one fid reading
i will pull one ogham stave and discuss its meaning, history, and core concepts with you. this could be something that needs more attention, a message for you, or a concept deeply tied to you as a person. through talking we can figure out its meaning in your life.
$10- answering a question
i will help you craft a question best suited to your needs and the oghams ability to answer. i will use my method of ogham divination which usually yields 3-5 staves. we will discuss the outcome and its meaning.
$20- three cauldrons
the three cauldrons are poetic energy centers in the body that are turned by joy and sorrow. there is the cauldron of warming, the cauldron of motion, and the cauldron of wisdom. this reading will look at each individual cauldron and provide insight on what you should focus on in those aspects of life to align your energy.
DM if interested!
if there's something specific you'd like a reading on that doesn't quite fit one of these options let me know and we can negotiate price!
thank you 💚

This is my first ogham reading in weeks, and I must say its auspicious message is very fitting as we approach Bealtaine, the Gaelic May Day festival. There's a tl;dr below.
Tumblr media
𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘩 (birch) indicates that it's time to blaze a new trail, to start down a new path, unhindered by the burdens of our past, be it unhelpful or harmful beliefs, behaviours or people. This Spring (Autumn if you are in the Southern hemisphere), we are called to walk as holy fools, light-footed and enamoured with life. We are to embark upon a quest for 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯. It's time to live truly unencumbered from the narratives and traumas that have been keeping us behind, both individiually and collectively. It's time to decolonise our minds, our bodies, and our societies. It's time to finally walk proud and free.
𝘛𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦 (holly) in this reading warns us that we will be severely tried - mentally, spiritually and, for some of us, physically as well. But stick to your course, push through the fire, the smoke (and the CS gas) because if you do, your branches will bear blood-red berries - your iron tested and tempred by the battle-flames.
If we stick it through, if we make it to the end of the path, 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭 (hazel) indicates that the reward we will reap is no less than 𝘦𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘵: wisdom, knowledge, inspiration, enlightment... Which in Gaelic tradition is not abstract, disconnected knowledge, but a deep knowing of ourselves and of the world around us - a grounded, embodied, holistic, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 enlightenment. Burn baby burn.
tl;dr
𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘩 urges us to set out on a new path, free and unburded
𝘛𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦 warns us that we will be tried and tested - but don't give up. Don't you dare give up.
𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭 promises us that, if we stick it through, we will earn 𝘦𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘢í𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘵 - embodied wisdom, a deep knowing of ourselves and of the world around us.

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (6)
Ogham alphabet and tree calendar
The Ogham alphabet is the most ancient Irish writing script. There, every letter of the alphabet is associated with the name of a tree, and for this reason, ogam is sometimes known as the Celtic tree alphabet.
The ogham script was a secret means of communication for the druids and also a key to the spirit world.
There are roughly 400 surviving orthodox inscriptions on stone monuments throughout Ireland and western Britain, the bulk of which are in southern Munster. The largest number outside Ireland are in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Details of the Celtic tree calendar are as follows:
B for Beth (Birch) - December 24th - January 20th
L for Luis (Rowan) - January 21st - February 17th
N for Nion (Ash) - February 18th - March 17th
O for Onn (Golden Gorse) - March 21st Spring Equinox
F for Fearn (Alder) - March 18th - April 14th
S for Saille (Willow) - April 15th - May 12th
H for Huath (Hawthorn) - May 13th - June 9th
D for Duir (Royal Oak) - June 10th - July 17th
U for Ura (Heather) - June 21st Summer Solstice
T for Tinne (Holly) - July 18th - August 5th
C for Coll (Hazel) - August 5th - September 1st
Q for Quert (Apple) - September 2nd - September 29th

Behold the fairy mound before your eyes;
It is plain for you to see, it is a king’s dwelling,
It was built by the harsh Dagda:
It was a shelter, it was a keep renowned for strength.
Although the name is translated as ‘the harsh Dagda’ here (which is a perfectly valid interpretation), the range of other meanings that are suggested by dúr could be interpreted as equating dúr (or duir, as it’s sometimes spelled) with dair (also sometimes spelled duir), because dúr can be given to mean ‘hard, rigid, solid,’ but also ‘firm, resolute, hardy,’ which offers a perfect complement to the hardy qualities of the oak. In the context of the Dagda having built the brug itself (using construction materials like oak), where the strength of its fortifications are emphasised, a translation of ‘the steadfast Dagda’ would perhaps be more apt, or perhaps even ‘the oaken Dagda.’
