When I found out that my best friend died, I just stood there. It took about ten seconds for me to start sobbing. When I went to the memorial/funeral service, I saw a bunch of small kids there, and not one of them looked sad, or even the tiniest bit upset. After the caretaker of my friend said a few words, they all cleared out, and I was left alone with an ornate wooden box that was filled with what used to be my best friend. The most cherished person in the world to me. I just stood there, looking at it. I contemplated shoving it over, because surely this was all some sort of joke surely her whole, living, body managed to fit in the box, and if I’d tip it over, she’d emerge, laughing.
I didn’t.
I stood there, staring. The box, even with the most beautiful polish and ornate, silver-plated swallows, could never reflect my best friend’s beauty. It was almost insulting, and as I stood there, I felt myself begin to cry since the first time I was informed she died. It was a month between the memorial service and the time I was informed.
That whole time, I denied to myself that she was dead. She was alive. She was ok. Yeah, sure, I hadn’t seen her in a while, but she was busy. I’d see her soon.
It was only then, staring at a box filled with the ashes of what was once my best friend, that I realized she was gone.
I stood in that room, alone, silently crying and looking at the sky, praying.
I got down on my knees and prayed.
I prayed not that I’d forget her, or that I’d “get over” her death, but instead that the pain would get easier to deal with.
It didn’t, and that was when I realized that god was dead to me.
Because he didn’t answer.

A year ago today, my best friend died. I’ve spent over 20 hours this weekend creating a memorial image of him, including some of his favorite things. There’s so much more I could’ve put in, but this seemed the right place to end it. He will always be The Best Max Ever.

Cairns, have you seen them?
Cairns, have you seen them?
While visiting my youngest child before COVID we went to some favorite spots , one of them being Gooseberry Falls in Duluth MN. The falls are beautiful as are the trees, streams, and foliage. This time when we went to the falls we saw something we had never seen before- Cairns. What are those? Cairns are small piles of rocks. I decided to look up there meaning, if any. The word “cairn” is a pile…

Next Saturday (it was going to be this one, but it got changed to the next due to a funeral service), I will be getting a tattoo that is a sort of memorial tattoo for my father. He’s still alive, but I wanted to have something all the same that was tied to him, as I already had something for my mother (below).
Tumblr media
It’s one of my small ways of coping with death, by having these reminders of who these people were to me, what was important to them, and what was important to US.
For my mom, it’s a Baby Yoda/Grogu tattoo. Yoda is her favorite Star Wars character, and I’ve more or less adopted Baby Yoda as an aspect of my identity, so it fits. For the next 10 years, I will be getting Baby Yoda themed gifts for holidays and birthdays. My car has a baby yoda vanity plate. I am doomed. Besides that, Grogu is also holding a balloon of a bubble-eyed fish, because my mom coped with the divorce, and us visiting our dad, by singing a song about the bubble-eyed fish he kept as pets. The colors of the fish are that of a daffodil, spilling out over the edges because she’s an abstract artist, and she has a love-hate relationship with daffodils. It’s also reminiscent of Delirium, a Sandman character, another sort I’ve adopted into my identity that also makes me think of my mom because of her eccentricity. And then, there is a crow, based on the many birds my mom has saved, but mostly based on Maddie, who loved eating French fries. The words of the string are “Good you must be”, which is, of course, “Yoda talk” of a phrase she likes to say (”Be good” -- I think a common phrase for parents, but nonetheless).
My dad’s tattoo is of a tree. Our car was saved from a worse crash by a tree, once. He knows so much about the trees around here, he helped me with a school project that required obtaining and identifying around ~20 different tree leaves. He’s planted trees around his home, and he has a botanical degree – he’s always working on a garden, bragging about his lawn, or otherwise working with nature. The design is loosely based off the chestnut tree, because 1984 is one of the books we connected on. There’s going to be some fire symbology in this, too, with the tree tops. My dad’s a smoker. He’s also a griller, a campfire person, and he got a pedicure on his toes that had flame designs. There will also be some musical notes in the tree, ideally in an Easter Egg way for the tune of Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd, but I’ve yet to see the design as of writing this, so I can’t say for certain if my artist has made that work yet. There’s also going to be a bunny leaning against the tree, because my dad tried to stump me once upon a time by asking me “what does a rabbit say?” and I answered “What’s up doc” without hesitation.
I want to bring attention to this sort of memorialization, because even though they’re still alive, that is what this is – a memorial, a way to remember them, and have them with me. Of course, they may end up outliving me, in which case I hope the art will be a comfort to them, a reminder of some of how I remembered them, and what they were in my life – the many layers to it. I also hope if my memory ever starts to fade, these may help me remember some things, or help those in my life at that time, remember things I cherished.
I think memorials are important, and as a project you undertake with the living, could also be a great bonding experience. You’ll not only have their input, you’ll also have the memory.
This doesn’t have to be tattoos or anything as permanent as that.
You could design a bit of jewelry together, have a piece of art made/commissioned, do a collage of photographs – if you’re so inclined, it could even be music made together, something written, a quilt or other sewn item, there are plenty of ways to keep a memory alive, as long as you are alive, in a tangible form that can be carried through your own life.
Of course, it is sad to think of it that way, to imagine that one day, these things may be all you have left of someone. The odds of that are slim these days, with photographs, memories on social media, and usually a culture of exchanging gifts for holidays, but as we all know, not every gift exchanged is truly something memorable.
If nothing else, this could be one thing you make sure is memorable, by trying to capture the essence of an impact.
