When will people admit treating an egg differently from other eggs because of the relationship you have with their parent is bad actually, and you need to treat them as their own individual.

OK, but what is the point of retconning Jenny Calendar’s background in Surprise/Innocence?
Setting aside for a second all the reasons it’s a bad idea - the lazy stereotypes about the Romani people and their supposed links to magic and fortune telling and curses it perpetuates, the fact the script has Jenny’s uncle explicitly say that the Romani are not like “the modern man”, the fact that the Kalderash are a real group of human beings (though not a “tribe” as the show insists on calling them), who probably shouldn’t be treated as fodder for a silly fantasy television show, the fact that later in the season (in Passion) it becomes apparent that the writers don’t know the difference between Romani and Romanian, the fact that neither Robia Scott nor Vincent Schiavelli actually have any Romani heritage, the fact that the show itself doesn’t ever use the word “Romani”, prefering instead to use a word that was recognized as a slur even in the 1990s – what does it actually add to the story that the show is trying to tell?
The “Janna of the Kalderash” retcon comes completely out of nowhere, so there’s nothing intentionally odd or ambiguous about her prior behavior that it can be used to explain.  Surprise briefly fakes that Jenny is going to try to do something to hurt Buffy, but no: she’s just taking her to the Bronze for her surprise party in a slightly weird way.  Jenny encourages Angel to leave town with the Judge’s arm, but: (1) this was actually a good idea which everyone agreed with and he should have done it and (2) he didn’t.
And it’s made very clear over the course of these two episodes that Jenny doesn’t know anything about the curse’s loophole until after the fact.  The first thing she does on finding out the curse has been broken is to rush back to the school and help to save Willow’s life.  So her entire “betrayal” of Buffy (a girl she’s known for less than nine months and who she hasn’t ever been allowed to have any emotional connection with beyond both knowing Giles anyway) boils down to her doing … what, exactly?  All those times she tried to break Buffy and Angel up?  The ones that never happened?  Not telling Buffy that the people who cursed Angel to suffer for eternity secretly wanted him to … still be suffering in the present?  Not sharing her family tree unprompted with a teenage girl she doesn’t even know and who doesn’t seem to ever attend her classes?  I genuinely don’t understand exactly why Buffy is meant to be upset at her.
Literally the only things I can see that this twist sets up are:
Providing another excuse for Giles and Jenny to break up (an excuse which we simply didn’t need! They only got back together at the very end of Ted, which was the most recent episode Jenny was in!  Just drop that subplot if you want to keep them separated!  Is it really so important that this time it’s Giles breaking up with her and not the other way around?)
Allowing for a scene where Buffy attacks a teacher in a crowded classroom, something that – while certainly a memorable and striking moment – is never followed up on despite the multiple witnesses and the fact the school’s principal is canonically always looking for an excuse to expel Buffy
Giving Jenny a reason to want to try to restore Angel’s soul later in the season, a reason that she 100% does not need.  You’ve already established that she knows magic!  That was part of her characterisation in her very first episode!  She could just be trying to help!  You know, the way Willow will do later on?  Why does she have to be doing this as some weird form of self-imposed penance? (Why does she not do any magic this season before the retcon?)
Introducing a means by which somebody can explicitly spell out to Buffy (and the audience) exactly how Angel’s curse was broken (first in her conversation with her uncle and then again in the computer lab with Giles and Buffy)
You don’t need to do the first three of those things at all, and you can do the fourth in practically any other way.  Have a flashback!  The Buffy writers and costume department love flashbacks!  Let Buffy learn about it in a dream – this pair of episodes is full of prophetic dreams!  Have somebody find something hidden away in the library – that works for literally every other bit of magical nonsense, doesn’t it?  Have Jenny find out by digging around on the internet, if it’s so important she be involved.  Use the fact she’s meant to be good at that!  Hell, have “Uncle Enyos” turn up and deliver his own exposition directly to Buffy, if you really must include a Romani character in the present day.
What does Jenny Calendar not really being “Jenny Calendar” add to the episode or the season arc or the wider show?  Why give her an uncle for Angelus to kill if she’s never going to mourn him or mention him again?  Why have her buried under the name “Jennifer” -- a name she never actualy uses while alive -- if you’re going to make a point of telling us it isn’t really hers?
(The frustrating thing is that I think that Surprise and Innocence are both very good!  Innocence in particular is probably the best episode of the show so far.  Maybe the best episode of the whole show.  Almost everything about these two episodes is really really good.  And then there’s … this.)

You're always so patient with anons, how do you keep from going off?
Because I know most of the Anons who come into my inbox aren't intentionally being malicious.
Real malice is very rare and there's no way for these anons to know me personally so I usually don't take it personally.
Another thing I've picked up on as I've gotten older. Half the things anons are upset about aren't actually about me or even about the thing they're complaining about.
What do I mean by that? Well, when an anon comes in complaining that I don't like something they like or that the version of a character I prefer doesn't look like their preferred version it's not about me or my interests it's about them. They were probably looking for some kind of validation and when they didn't get it from me they took it as some kind of criticism of their tastes and by extension a criticism of them as a person. A big example is the people who like Erik and can't stand to see people say his behavior towards Christine is toxic. They tend to think any kind of analysis of the text that doesn't paint Erik positively or is critical of reading a romantic relationship into Erik and Christine's interactions is targeted so they feel the need to justify themselves.
Another example is when people call out toxic patterns they see in the fandom or trends that they dislike, you inevitably get backlash from people who feel like they're being personally attacked rather than recognizing that the criticism is general or aimed at content and prevailing mindsets rather than individuals.
That's actually a very human and relatable reaction to have. I'm not above it myself, it's just that as I've gotten older I've learned how to stop and check myself and assess whether my feelings are coming from a sense of personal defensiveness or if I actually feel like there is something that needs to be discussed.
That's not to say I don't get frustrated from time to time or aggravated when I feel like people are projecting things onto my writing and characters that aren't there. Even more so do I get aggravated when I'm directly asked a question but then when I give my honest answer it's treated like I went out of my way to attack part of the fandom, but I know that at it's core very little of that is actually about me, my opinions or my work. It's about people feeling like they're being called out and not being able to handle it.
I find the best way to deal with it is to engage with it patiently and then block or ignore it if it's obvious that I am dealing with bad-faith or malice. Even if the other person isn't showing me their best side, I try to remember that in most cases I'm still talking to a human being who may not actually be trying to hurt me and I try not to take it personally on my end.
That said, if you find yourself in a situation with another user and feel like you're dealing with something that is too much for you or that is testing your comfort then you're within your right to block, step away or protest. I'm not at all advocating that you take someone's abuse.

the absolute insane misinterpretation of azula by the entirety of tumblr will actually kill me. anyway, i’ve gotten BACK into atla and. oooooh boy, i’ve had SO many thoughts about it but never had a way to communicate these to other people. but. now I do! and this post is entirely dedicated to Azula. and it will be opinion, but also sort of true? i dont think my opinion is necessarily MORE correct than anyone elses, but i think if i see one more post about it without having shared my view i will immediately combust. So, if you have a very precious view of azula for whatever reason, i wouldn’t read these. I don’t hate on azula or downplay her mental illness & relationship with ozai, but i also do discuss a lot of negative things azula has done. So, without further ado;
JAGA’S AZULA MEGA POST
1. Yes, Azula WAS an antagonist. She did awful things BEFORE the psychosis actually began (which. i will be talking about) and she should not be excused for that. Yes, she was 14, but she also was also incredibly intellegent and recognized that what she was doing things that WERE harmful to others (the whole “she was right of course” shows her recognition of these things.)
2. HOWEVER; she was practically groomed to behave the way she did, and i’m not just talking about Ozai. Ursa labeled her a monster before she could even truly understand the consequences of her actions. She grew up with this title, believing she fundamentally WAS a bad/awful/evil person, not that she had DONE things that were wrong. She also got praised and rewarded for the things her mother said were wrong, so she had just as much (if not more) internal strife. (hence her hallucinating her MOTHER and not Zuko or Ozai, despite seeing them more)
3. People often overestimated her intelligence, especially in the situation with Zuko coming home. No one in that situation would have said that she “failed” in any way, meaning there was no need for a back up plan like that. I think azula, in her own way, did care about Zuko. However, this one is just personal opinion but i believe she felt betrayed in the end, and thats what made her behavior towards him change so drastically in the last book.
4. I see a lot of argument about this, and this is one that i feel very strongly about, and that is that azula WAS one of zuko’s abusers. BUT azula had never seen anyone treat zuko CORRECTLY until way after her behavior to him was solidified. (i mean, iroh is not exactly a picture of great parenting, and he isn’t in the picture until AFTER ozai planned to kill zuko!) Hell, i’m willing to bet ozai rewarded her for abusing zuko, and beyond that, Azula probably believed that was ozai caring about zuko, the same way zuko did. Azula was not INTENTIONALLY abusing zuko, but that does NOT mean she didn’t.
5. Azula does not need a “redemption arc”, and i would argue that zuko did not have a typical “redemption arc”. Redemption Arc’s are for when someone is MALICIOUSLY hurting others, with full knowledge of it. Zuko just needed to see that the war was in itself wrong, and that ozai was lying about… pretty much anything. Azula needed that too! But, she instead was stuck (which. great job iroh! i love you but that girl was still a CHILD she could have CHANGED) with the man who had proven he would lie to anyone about anything to seem like a benevolent ruler. Azula also was mentally ill, NOT evil. yes, mental illness does not excuse any of her behavior, but someone doesn’t START with extreme and vivid hallucinations! i’m willing to bet she was struggling with some sort of personality disorder, which immediately brings all her behavior into a new light. (if anyone sees this post and wonders how i came to that conclusion, i will explain it, but it doesnt feel necessary to add currently)
thats all i have for now! i don’t know if i articulated most of my points well or anything, and i have no doubt that i will think of more things to add, but i really want to share some of these things, because i only see reaaally extreme views on azula, and i think she is more in the middle of both sides. if you actually read that word vomit, thank you, and adios

i. really do not like the characterization of steve being an ex bully. and i don't mean an ex douche, we know he was at the very least somewhat of an asshole, but like - the idea that he would pick out certain people to actively bully? especially when it implies it was physical?
it literally doesn't match his character. at all. the thing its based on is steve having a dickish confrontation with jonathan during a time of emotional vulnerability, because he thinks nancy, the love of his life, is cheating him with the guy. he goes for low blows and says mean shit because he's hurt, he's angry - but he doesn't pick jonathan because he's weird or low on the totem pole. he does it because he's the guy nancy was with.
it also literally takes less than a few hours for him to feel bad about it, to ditch his best friends for what they wrote about nancy, and to decide to go apologize before he even gets clarification on what happened. when this happens, he's still hurt, but recognizes his actions were wrong pretty quickly, and literally cuts off his best friends permanantly for it.
i don't think jonathan byers has that kind of magic in his punch. not enough to reform a bully that quickly (and so effectively,) and to suddenly make him a better person the rest of the show.
steve is not a bad person. we know this. but a lot of people seem to think he WAS a bad person that suddenly had an improvement arc, and I'm just not buying it.
what i think is more likely, based on his dialogue and behavior and when and how it shifted, is that steve was a rich kid who had it easy and never really had to care about things before. he faced no comsequences for things. but he was never mean spirited or hateful or opportunistic - in fact his worst flaw was that he very obviously cared what other people thought of him.
nancy plays an important role in this, because i think a lot of people forget: nancy chose to go out with him. and yall have got to be kidding yourselves if you think nancy was every at any point the kind of person who would choose to date someone who was a bully.
the most likely reality is that steve probably coasted on through high school not really caring or paying attention to much, including not doing anything when tommy or carol were assholes. he laughed at their bullying because he could frame them as harmless jokes, because he never saw any consequences for that behavior; but he wouldn't have initiated something like that on his own. and he only would have done it in the first place because he wanted their approval.
then in comes nancy wheeler. the only girl he's professed to have fallen in love with. he gets a taste of a healthier relationship, of being cared for by a good person, and he faces actual consequences of his behavior, and tommy and carol went from being his best friends to assholes he never is friendly with again after ONE altercation. he's not the kind of person who got joy out of hurting other people like them, he's the kind of person that went along with the behavior that was expected of him, and he lashed out when he was hurt, and almost immediately regretted doing it.
nancy is the out he'd been needing to shut all of that shit down, because she was someone else he could seek the approval of without having to be a dick to do it. he recognized the results of his actions, and nancy isn't even the first person he seeks out to apologize; its jonathan. that shows genuine regret over hurting him, and not just approval seeking from nancy.
that is not the behavior of a bully. that's the behavior of a guy who was used to not thinking about his actions, which definitely hurt people, without being intentionally cruel. he's also not used to seeing the consequences, and when he does, he doesn't like them. he doesn't want to be that person.
the other interaction with jonathan that people use to characterize steve being a bully is the camera part - but I'm not even going to bring that in because a) he responded completely appropriately to a situation in which a guy peeped and took pictures of his girlfriend in her bra non consensually. like actually fuck you if you disagree on that front. but even so, he replaced jonathan's camera afterwards with nancy, when he knew the pics weren't the product of him creepy stalking.
i think the evidence shows pretty solidly that steve literally does not have the personality to have ever been a bully. a carefree asshole? yes. but bullying requires targeting and intent, which i think steve never would have had. he sought approval, which didn't carry maliciousness; and he was ignorant enough not to acknowledge how other people were being affected by his behavior, until it literally hit him in the face. but at no point did he truly want to hurt anybody, or set out to do it when he thought it was unjustified. he didn't target jonathan because he thought it would boost his status or make him feel good, he did it because he clearly thought jonathan was doing some shady shit.

Here is an incredibly long and probably mistake filled infodump I made on adora in she ra cause I love her.
I’m so tired of people saying what happened in the horde didn’t affect adora, because it visibly did and most likely still does.
The two main causes of this are most likely cut down to two things, the military lifestyle of the horde, and shadow weaver.
She is always read for combat, in an episode decently well into the series we see she sleeps a dagger under her pillow (the one where she visits bows family). She is also more jumpy and on guard, she herself states she hasn’t relaxed in her life and while it’s played as a joke her behavior seems to reflect on that. She is constantly throwing herself into battle, doesn’t matter if she’s prepared or not she’s ready. She also has a habit of not sleeping when stressed and just in general seems to view herself as a weapon.
She seems to separate herself from she ra but not in a way that matters, she veiws she ra and in a way herself as a weapon. It’s not unreasonable to assume that the horde tried to make them into human weapons, but adora seems to have a harder time balancing that.
This is when shadow weaver begins to come into play. Shadow weaver is incredibly cruel to both catra and adora, we see this in the flashbacks to their childhood and we see this in mystacor etc.
Shadow weaver wants adora to depend solely on her, she needs adora for the horde to win therefore she needs adora to see her as the only thing she has. Obviously shadow weaver isn’t stupid, she most likely understands that adora will resent her if she forces her to only talk to her etc. The thing is is that with catra adora starts to depend on her, they love eachother and based on how catra acts when adora talks to lonnie they most likely only typically spend much time together, they *need* eachother. Which is something that shadow weaver most likely noticed, she knows that catra is a bit more rebellious which means that at any momment catra could convince adora that shadow weaver is bad. This most likely is why shadow weaver started to resort to Violence as often as she did.
We also aren’t fully sure if shadow weaver had ever pulled the mind erasing trick on adora before. She convinces adora that catras punsihment when they where young in a way was adoras fault since “adora is responsible for her.” In a way this is probably a big reason for adoras mindset. Yes the horde conditioned them to be nothing but soilders (as seen in the fact that showing weakness was bad from when she tells glimmer to not show signs of a cold when she’s glitching) but shadow weaver taught her that she needed her. Adora cares about shadow weaver, she can deny it all she wants but you can see in the way she speaks about her that she views her as important. If she views her as important then who’s to say that shadow weaver isn’t right, that she is responsible for her friends therefore responsible for their lives, no matter the cost. Shadow weaver also recognized this fear in the mystacor episode, saying they only wanted her because of she ra. And when shadow weaver does come back she intentionally aggravates adora, even if it was just teasing it wouldn’t be past shadow weaver to be trying to manipulate her. Hell even when she supposedly switched sides in the end she STILL tries to make adora atleast semi more dependable on her, saying catra was a distraction ehich would mean shadow weaver isn’t one.
The horde like I said also had its negative effects, it did on everyone. The difference is the severity of those affects, look at scorpia, lonnie, etc for a momment. They almost seem less jaded then adora and catra sure they are still soilders and under manipulation but they almost seem less bothered by it. Scorpia doesn’t have that same fearful look catra holds when shadow weaver is close, and with Lonnie and the gang they seemed more distressed when catra was in lead. Every single one of the horde soilders wants to fight the princesses but none of them have the issue adora has, throwing themselves into the problem over and over till Someone grounds them. Catra and adora are also very visibly flinch at sudden movement. They also seem to suffer nightmares, adora having a few instances she woke up gasping or again during the mystacor episode where when she wakes up she shouts for glimmer until she appears, and glimmer doesn’t appear to be suprised by this.

Who's ready for another essay, lol.
There's a comic making rounds that takes exception to classifying Janus as part of self preservation. I understand why, op thinks self-preservation is a more socially acceptable trait than selfishness and therefore robs him of his purpose. I'm not going to link it, or tag the op, because this isn't meant to be an argument against them.
I just want to be very clear that that is not in any way what I am saying, when I say Janus is self-preservation. I am saying that selfishness and self-preservation are the same thing. I am saying that self preservation is an inherently selfish trait and that that is not a bad thing.
Yes, even when Virgil does it. In a life or death situation, we do not flee or fight for anyone but ourselves. We freeze to hide, to keep ourselves safe no matter the cost. I mean to say that when it comes down to the wire, Virgil would lie just as easily as Janus. Remember, his instinct is also responsible for the fawn response.
My purpose in saying Janus is the more conscious, front brain aspect of self preservation is two fold. Firstly to point out that his actions are by necessity, deliberate. Social standing is a safety net. You need people to like you, to care about you, in order to get your needs met. You need to be well regarded by at least some people in order to thrive. Janus is the part of self preservation that assesses every single interaction Thomas has, to see which actions have the highest benefit to him. To weigh Thomas's needs or wants in the moment against his future standing and encourage him to act accordingly.
This is why Deceit plays so highly in his nature. Sometimes, if you take objectionable actions (like being visibly selfish) society will reject you. What do you do when you still need to take those actions to be happy and healthy? You lie. You lie to your friend so they won't be hurt, you lie about why you missed a social event, you lie about a fundamental aspect of your personality; to preserve the illusion of being someone who is never objectionable. (A thing that is not actually possible to be, btw)
My second reason is to point out why Janus put so much pressure on the wedding situation. And that is because Virgil had overstepped the balance between the conscious and unconscious parts of self-preservation, although not intentionally. Because Thomas was doing the work to understand his anxiety, he was being more heedful of Virgil's threat assessments. He is bordering on fawning behavior recently and he isn't even aware that that's what he's doing. He doesn't want people to be mad at him. Not because he's a wonderfully selfless human, but because people being mad at him makes him feel unsafe.
Add to that, Roman’s uncertainty, Patton's black and white view of lying, and Logan's input being routinely drowned out and you have Thomas in an absolutely unhealthy place, mentally.
Janus probably didn't actually give a single fuck whether or not Thomas lied to Lee and Mary Lee. He just wanted Thomas to assess the situation, make the decision most beneficial to himself, and carry it out in a way that kept him safe. Thomas wanted to go to the callback. Thomas needs to seize more opportunities for economic stability. The best choice for Thomas, rationally, was to go to the callback. Janus wanted him to recognize his own needs and put himself first and he wanted him to do it with complete conscious awareness. He went about it in the least effective manner possible, but I digress.
He wants Thomas to understand why lying and being selfish are not only not bad, but actively necessary. He wants him to be honest with himself, even when he's not honest with anyone else, because you can't effectively maintain your boundaries if you don't know what they are or why you need them.
Anyway, I have a lot of thoughts about why Janus's plans backfired on him and why his approach didn't gain him any ground until Thomas was in crisis, but suffice to say it's not because selfishness is bad or Janus was acting against his function. When I say Janus is self-preservation I mean to say that he is integral to Thomas's survival and he's done a damn good job so far even when he isn't heeded. I mean that I see him; in all of his Selfish, Self Centered, "Thomas First" Glory; and I love him for it.

It's not that I think so highly of myself cause mostly I think I'm nothing at all; it's that I think even less of you.
I ran out of the patience needed to enjoy most conversations. The energy to sift through layers of bullshit just to get to a modicum of something real, I don't have it in me, and I'm not sure it will return. Tip-toeing around fragile egos, mine in-fucking-cluded. Talking to people who share with you who they want you to think they are (or worse, who they lie and tell themselves they are) more often than who they actually are. Offended and for no decent reason.
---
There is a mask people put on. You know the one. The person who you act like, whose behaviors and points of conversation you wager echo social convention and employ when you are in affable mode. Bestly described: ai boilerplate personality. <<<pro tip: the less comfortable your mask, the more likely you understand what the fuck I'm talking about rn>>>
And it is not just something you put on at work or at a party where you know few people. It can be done reflexively anytime a genuine expression of personality comes with a perceived or known consequence and/or privilege. <<<we're gonna come back to this>>>
For some people, it's not just a mask; they try to make themselves the person that personality should belong. It is an ask of the brain to ignore the parts of our essence that don't agree with what we learn we are expected to be. So, I reckon for some, assuming a universally acceptable personality is less laborious than dissonance and external conflict.
And our bad habits, goals, self-image all of it is being influenced daily by our own, as well as those around us, decisions on how much of ourselves should reject or conform to the standard set under these conditions. Any conformity at all means the pressure to not be true to ourselves still exists because, absent a model for expected behavior, there would be nothing to conform to. So long as some conformity exists, these influences are at play, with many not even realizing it, let alone willing or able to discuss it.
<<<sidenote: I want to call a lot of people idiots (so many fucking people) but forgive me, Father, for they know not what they do, and frankly, neither does my dumbass too sometimes, so I try to shut the fuck up before someone has to tell me to sit the fuck down, knowing that knowing how to act right is a privilege too>>>
---
This second self can be used intentionally. For example, to influence others where an honest showing would not yield desired results. <<<I told you we were gonna come back to this, and while I have you, I need to say this is where my reserves of patience to not address the bullshit and lazily float on the surface have dried up entirely>>> You see if you don't state yourself honestly when you know doing so is not to your advantage, the other person is forced to respond to the misrepresentation or confront you on your misrepresentations, given they recognize those misdirections, of course. And even if they did, what proof do they have should they confront you? It's likely drama and intrigue now overshadow any substantive conversation, and the misrepresentation's work is done.
---
<<<here I suggest holding any moral conundrums regarding 'truth' and influence till the end, that is, if you are inclined to such burdens>>>
I'd like you to ask yourself: are some people never going to think for themselves and only seek to fit in with an in-group and adopt a boilerplate personality that's tailored to that particular group's markers?
Why do I ask? Because intentional misrepresentations, lies, withholding information, and purposeful statements that have multiple interpretations can influence much like the truth. This, in part, is what contemporary campaigning is: marketing, advertising, politics, etc. It's how they cook up convention. The suits know it. Who we'd call good, hard-working people, not such much. Sausage making bb.
The anti-suits use it too. Some of the disrupters and jesters have learned to obfuscate with this form of behavior to some success. However, most legitimatized players focus on informing the public and letting them decide for themselves.
It behooves us all to ask whether or not the people that we aim to unify will only do so as followers and not autonomous of this type of influence or persuasion. The 'will only' used in that last sentence is really important because if it is unlikely that an outcome can otherwise be achieved, the bad fact needs to be dealt with. We need to be able to deal with inconvenient truths.
---
But it gets late, and you get tired, and you don't want to be mad you want to be understood and understand in return. They robbed us of that, and I'm so epically angry because that instance of genuinely seeing ourselves reflected in others is where love, passion, and humanity live. I'm angry at me, and I'm angry at you because that's all they left us to connect with. I think little of me and less of you because I refuse to do what is worse and not think of us at all, assume the mask.
I won't, can't stop till we all can love again.

traffic — car
Author’s Note: thought of this while driving  hehe (fortunately didn’t hit any traffic tho!).
Tumblr media
traffic — car
Iguro Obanai x Reader, Kanroji Mitsuri x Reader, Kocho Shinobu x Reader, Rengoku Kyojuro x Reader, Shinazugawa Sanemi x Reader, Tomioka Giyuu x Reader
Word Count: ~2,500
CW: explicit language
traffic — motorcycle
~faqs~
‼️ Pls and ty read these hcs w/ a grain of salt and lots of humor ‼️
If you drive, then there’s a high likelihood that you might do some of the following driving behaviors/pet peeves mentioned
Myself included in that likelihood lmao 😬
These hcs are just a personal indulgence into how I believe various Hashira would approach/react to traffic 😇
Tumblr media
Seethes in traffic
But silently
A silent seether
Knows there’s not much he can do about it
Knows he’ll end up where he needs to be ~eventually
But DAMN SHIT FUCK
All silently screamed in his head, ofc 😌
It is not a good idea to engage w/ him when stuck in traffic
Don’t turn on the radio, play a CD, or AUX/Bluetooth your phone
Don’t ask about his day
Don’t comment on anything mundane — on anything at all
Just let the man be
Having been his partner for a while now means you understand it isn’t personal
But it’s awkward in the beginning
After all, you can tell he’s seething
“Obanai? It’s just traffic babe. No need to stress!” ☺️
Wrong. Thing. To. Say. 🥴
To his credit, he simply grits his teeth, biting sharply at his tongue, refusing to yell at you bc somewhere amidst his seething he recognizes you’re just being a concerned sweetheart
Fortunately, you notice the tightening of his grip on the steering wheel, wisely opting to save the rest of your comforting words for a better time 😅
His seething vibes ebb once the traffic thins, at which point he mumbles sheepishly, “I love you. Please don’t talk to me when there’s traffic. It’s not you, it’s me. Alright?”
You nod, immediately grasping the situation, “Of course, babe. Thanks for letting me know.”
He blushes slightly, almost in disbelief that he’s w/ such an empathetic, respectful partner
If you happen to be the one driving, then he doesn’t seethe nearly as deeply
Still doesn’t want any background noise/music playing, but actually encourages you to ramble about your day — about whatever’s on your mind
He’s just sooooo grateful he isn’t the one behind the wheel, and can focus on his favorite thing instead: you !!!!!
If the traffic’s especially bad, then he might even shyly ask if he can take a nap
You always say, “Sure, babe!” but he’d certainly stay awake if you wanted his company instead
He hasn’t realized it yet, but you’ve started intentionally grabbing the car keys first whenever you get to drive somewhere together
It’s a small sacrifice, and totally worth it every time you get to watch him drooling adorably in your peripheral 😪
Unfortunately you haven’t been able to take any photos bc yanno, both hands on the steering wheel
But what a cutie patootie! 😍
Plus, he’s often super cuddly after #traffic naptime 🥰
Tumblr media
Is too nice of a driver
The kind of driver who might actually cause traffic
Lets drivers go even when she has the right of way
Waits for pedestrians even when they’re still miles from actually getting to the crosswalk
Pulls off whenever she sees a stopped car w/ their hazards on (she’s jump started countless batteries and changed countless flat tires)
You lowkey sob getting into the car if she’s driving, bc you know it’ll take forever and a day to get to your destination
Sometimes when you’re stuck in highway traffic w/ her, you swear you actually lose distance bc of how many ppl merge in front of her 😐
Ofc, you do find her kindness endearing to an extent
Actually have a decent amount of useful acquaintances from her constant insistance on providing roadside service—“Can’t we help them, [y/n]? Who knows how long Triple A might take to reach them! ☹️”—GAH you suck at denying her 😒
But ~eventually, you draw a soft line
“Mitsuri, honey, we’re going to be late. Again.”
She tilts her head confusedly, waving on yet another pedestrian, “Just text Shinobu? She’ll understand.”
“Mitsuri,” you’re firm, “I appreciate and admire how patient and thoughtful you are,” you swallow nervously, “But what about our time? What about my time?” and then quietly, “Sometimes I feel like stranger #5 is more important to you than… well, than me.”
She gasps, eyes widening as she connects the dots
Doesn’t speak for the remainder of the drive
Whiiich, goes by suspiciously fast ?? Her usual driving manners nonexistent
That’s not to say she drives rudely! She just doesn’t drive overly politely either
Once you arrive at the diner—where you’re meeting Shinobu for brunch—she quickly hops out of the car, rushing over to open the passenger door for you
“Misturi, I-”
She crushes you in a desperate hug before you can finish you sentence
“I had no idea how inconsiderate I was being of your time,” she murmurs into your neck
“Thank you for being honest with me,” she kisses your cheek
“Thank you for not being angry with me,” she kisses your other cheek
“I’m sorry I made you feel unimportant,” she squeezes your hipbones
“You are so important to me. The most important to me,” she brushes her nose against yours
“I promise to be more mindful of your time,” she nips at your bottom lip
“I love you,” you respond simply, heart brimming with relief and gratitude as you reassuringly caress her jaw, “Now let’s head inside? I’m ravenous!”
Tumblr media
An absolute menace when stuck in traffic
Yanno when someone pulls an annoying ass stunt, and you can kinda peer through their window and sometimes you’re like, “Ohhh yeah that makes sense that a teenager pulled a dangerous, teenager move”?
Shinobu’s like that (as in, she’s like the teenager lmao), except the last thing anyone expects is a petite, smiling, devil
If she’s on the highway, then she def constantly changes lanes in traffic bc, “This one must be the fastest?!”
Tailgates (which isn’t quite as horrible when traffic’s forcing everyone to drive below 20 anyway, but still…)
Will honk incessantly until the car in front of her changes lanes 😳
Rolls down her window and offers a bright grin and careless wave whenever someone inevitably flips her off 😃
Hasn’t been in any accidents tho, bc her car is baby 🥺
She’s reckless, but doesn’t actually want to cause any harm to her baby
Also bc you’d never speak w/ her again
Okayokay not actually, bc srsly using the silent treatment against your partner is toxic 🤢
If anything tho, she’d never hear the end of it, and she legit shrivels when you chew her out
Mostly bc you hardly ever get angry, and when you do, it’s always warranted and supported by various evidence, logic, and reasoning
If she’s in the city, then she can’t be quite as feisty w/ her driving
Has to utilize different tactics
Obnoxiously revs her engine to intimidate/irritate others
Surprisingly doesn’t run red lights, but will absolutely honk at someone if they take more than 0.01 secs to hit their gas once the light turns green again
Does this to everyone
Cops included
But has never been pulled over ?? Prob bc she technically doesn’t break any laws — is just suuuper aggressive and impatient
“The traffic was unbelievable today!” she groans as she enters the kitchen, smiling softly at the sight of you rummaging through the fridge
“How many?” you ask amusedly
She pouts—not that you’re looking at her Where is the cheese? I could’ve sworn I bought cheese?! you growl frustratedly—crossing her arms, “Received, only four. Given? In the double digits.”
“Hm, not too shabby,” you chuckle, “I guess you’ve done worse.”
Her record for receiving ✨the bird✨ in one nonstop drive is somewhere around 12
Her record for giving? Closer to 25
“I’m sorry I’m late,” she walks to you, pressing a warm kiss between your shoulder blades
“I’m glad you’re home in one piece,” you shrug, “Where is the cheese?”
“The cheese?” she laughs fondly at your whining tone, “Check the left bin.”
You check
“Aha !!” you grin triumphantly, spinning around, cheese in hand, “Your tardiness is forgiven, oh wonderful Shinobu.”
Tumblr media
The longer he’s stuck in the traffic, the worse he gets
In the beginning, he’s arguably cheerful?
Kyojuro can put a positive spin on practically anything ☀️
If you’re in the car w/ him, then he’ll start a game of I-Spy or License Plates
He’s grateful for the extra time w/ you ☺
The grumpier you are about the traffic, the more he optimistically compensates
It’s all genuine too, bc he just finds it adorable when you’re huffy, and is more than happy to try and coax a contented mood from you
When he’s driving, he likes to hold your hand, rubbing reassuring circles, “It is alright, my love. We will get to where we need to be! Traffic comes and goes.”
He’s an experienced driver, and never takes unnecessary risks — would rather be late than cause an accident
When you’re driving, he likes to rest his palm on your thigh, squeezing gently, “Do not worry! You are doing great! I am sure we will be there in no time.”
He’s excellent about not passenger seat driving, ignores any road rage that you may or may not exclaim, and trusts that you’re remaining attentive and driving w/ utmost care — will very calmly and uncritically point out if you make/are about to make any rash decisions
If you aren’t in the car w/ him, then that’s when things can, uhh, go south…
He doesn’t have your lively presence to balance, to entertain, him
Doesn’t have your frustrated, beautiful smile to ease him
5-10 mins of traffic he can manage fine
20+ mins? Not so much
—Ik, Ik, there’s that awkward transition from 10 mins to 20 mins, but wouldn’t it be weird if I wrote 5-19? 😆
As time dwindles by, he feels antsier and antsier
Something akin to aggravated sinks into his skin
Kyojuro is not good at feeling aggravated
He’s tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, clicking his tongue repeatedly, eyeing the clock every 30 secs
The only silver lining of getting stuck alone in traffic is when he calls you and you pick up
“[y/n]!”
From the mere edge of his voice, you recognize he’s stuck in traffic
“Kyo! How long has it been?”
“Too long!” he declares, “I miss you!”
“I miss you too, Kyo,” you stifle a fond giggle, “I’ll be here when you arrive, no matter how late. Okay?”
He appreciates you so much
11/10 going to smother you in affection the moment this damned traffic lets up and he can #gtfh (get the fuck home)
“Okay, [y/n]! I love you!” he doesn’t want to hang up, but he also dislikes being on the phone for too long while driving
“I love you! You’ve got this.”
Tumblr media
Does his absolute best to avoid getting stuck in traffic
Generally refuses to drive/be driven between the hrs of 6am-10am and 3pm-8pm
Do those seem like wide ranges for AM and PM rush hrs?
Well they are
#can’t risk it #not even for the biscuit
On the rare occasions when he can’t avoid rush hr
Or when there’s construction/road work and everything gets backed up bc fucking. Idiots. Don’t. Know. How. To. Merge.
Like, did you NOT see the sign warning you that everything was gonna become one lane?
How about NOT zooming past and then merging last minute ??
You do realize that that exact behavior is why the single lane gets even more backed up ?????
Bc of selfish, oblivious, assholes such as yourself ??
There is a reason everyone is switching into one lane
—Can you tell that I encounter that specific above scenario often ?! Hahahahaha 😵
—ANYwho
On the rare occasions when Sanemi gets stuck in traffic
I guarantee he’s mumble cursing the entire time
Thing is, he’s typically prepared: if he knows he’ll have to drive during rush hr, then he knows he’s going to hit traffic, so he leaves himself ample time for the inevitable slowdown(s)
He isn’t pissed off bc he’s gonna be late or whatever
He’s pissed off bc #TRAFFIC
Bc #ppl constantly switching lanes as if each new lane’ll magically become the fastest one it won’t
Bc #ppl not paying attention and then suddenly yeeting over from the far left to make their exit dumbasses
Bc #ppl honking as if the additional noise will somehow organize the chaos it doesn’t
Fortunately, his traffic mood dissipates as soon as he reaches his destination
Especially if you happen to be his destination
No point in feeding negative energy when he’s finally FREE !! 🥳
Altho you can always tell when he’s coming off #traffic mode, bc: A, it takes a while for his shoulders to lose their accumulated tension; B, you can usually hear him stomping his way over to you; and C, sometimes, when traffic’s reeeally terrible, there’ll be a lingering redness in the middle of his forehead
Yanno, bc he facepalmed so many times 💀
Tumblr media
Is pretty unfazed by highway traffic
Considers it an opportunity to listen to another episode of his favorite podcast
Or an entire album from start to finish
Gets into the far left lane and just zones out
Dw tho, he pays attention to how close he is to his exit 😉
City traffic, however
Poor Giyuu cannot handle the intensity of city traffic
Stimulation = too much
Four way intersection w/ everyone running reds and packing as tightly together as possible w/o bumping?
Pedestrians making it even more stressful what w/ how they just saunter in between cars? Like ?? Dumbfucks do you want to get hit ?? Could you not do that ?? Please ??
Assholes honking, tire screeching, and flipping off everyone?
Meanwhile Giyuu’s just trying to safely get home to your pretty face 😭
Cars double parked w/o their hazards on, so it’s unclear if the driver plans on leaving anytime soon or if they’re just being an utter jerk
BICYCLISTS ffs just bc you’re riding something more nimble than a hunk of metal does not mean you can just weave around everything; you could get doored; you could get smacked; you could get ouch-ed !! (fun fact — I walk, drive, AND bike, so I’m familiar w/ all of their pros and cons 🙃)
The actual time that getting stuck in traffic consumes, on the highway or in the city, doesn’t annoy Giyuu
It’s just the likelihood of being overwhelmed—mostly in the city—that he loathes
Not to mention, why do ppl seem to forget basic driving etiquette and safety the moment traffic arises ??
Presumably ppl would drive better in traffic bc of its complexity, slower speeds, and higher stakes ??
But nooo ppl become certifiably terrifying
Ugh
He’d sit through highway traffic every day if he could be spared any and all city traffic
Would 100% make that deal w/ the devil

I was thinking about it while I was in the shower, so here’s another Hot Take on the discussion on whether we can (or should) consider technoblade as abusive
a lot of interactions between technoblade and other characters are difficult to gauge because c!techno obviously isn’t honest about his feelings at all times On Top Of cc!techno Very Rarely If Ever being completely in character, including and especially with very serious lore scenes. so how we’re meant to take anything he does or says is hard to parse, especially with the knowledge that other creators can take scenes seriously and incorporate it into their lore even if it wasn’t the intention at the time (like jack’s death at tommy’s hands during exile).
(technoblade has only recently come out to state that he’s intentionally playing his side of the story lighter to give people a break from the heavy angst in the rest of the server, but that’s hardly new. he broke the tension all the time during his partnership with tommy, namely with the confrontation with dream at the portal and tommy and tubbo’s first reunion, but it was even noticeable with doomsday, his perspective is a Palpably different tone from Anyone on the l’manberg side of things. which can make some Very interesting inconsistencies when it’s directly slammed into tommy’s more serious roleplaying style.)
you can Easily read him as Either a purely opportunistic character who uses the guise of being deeply emotionally wounded as a justification for Horrific Violence when he was never that emotionally invested in the first place Or a character that is rarely if ever honest and open with his feelings, who hurts other people by accident by trying to downplay his own vulnerability who is Nevertheless deeply emotionally invested in and impacted by the people around him. both interpretations can be soundly backed up by what we’ve been given and we can’t really discount the other reading because of the semi-canoncity of whatever technoblade does. we aren’t really gonna know unless technoblade himself decides to address it specifically.
so with that in mind, I want to take a second to take a more charitable reading, not as an argument that technoblade’s relationship with tommy Wasn’t unhealthy (because it objectively was no matter the reading of his intentions) but to ground the overall conversation a little bit here.
this, I think, is where the nuance in the intersection between “technoblade didn’t have the full picture of what happened with dream and tommy” and “technoblade knew enough to know that what he did on doomsday was wrong” Matters.
if we read technoblade as a character that genuinely cares but either chooses not to or doesn’t know How to express those emotions in a healthy productive way (“tsundereblade” ala the scene of ranboo giving techno the axe) Combined With techno’s very dry sense of humor then it Is very possible to read some of the more uh, Unfortunate things that he’s said in a different light. which doesn’t excuse them by any means, people hurting their friends by not being emotionally honest or through jokes that hit harder than intended happens all the time and it’s the responsibility of that friend to apologize and change their behavior. but at the same time, people can’t actually change their behavior if they don’t know that what they’ve done is wrong.
we need to keep in mind that: - both technoblade And tommy express their affection with their friends by ribbing them. making fun of each other Is a sign of affection for them. if we’re meant to read that as part of their characters then it may not be entirely fair to say that technoblade should’ve known that putting tommy down was going to hurt him
- technoblade knows (or assumes) that dream wants to kill tommy and he knows that tommy has trauma. but technoblade Doesn’t know that dream systematically destroyed tommy’s self confidence to the point of being suicidal. he Doesn’t know how fragile tommy is about his own self worth, and he Doesn’t know that that kind of joking would hit tommy differently now than it would’ve back during their pogtopia days.
- technoblade knows that tommy was a child soldier, he knows that he was forced out of his home and isolated by someone that he’d trusted and loved, and he directly relates tommy’s betrayal to his own. he’s more likely to think that tommy’s mental state Now has more to do with l’manberg than dream specifically even if he recognizes dream as a threat to tommy.
none of this makes techno putting down tommy’s self worth Right, it doesn’t mean that we have to look at him charitably when he tells someone to their face that they aren’t equals only to turn around and destroy a country when he thinks he’s being dehumanized. but I also think that we can’t necessarily assume that he 100% devalued tommy both as a person and a friend from that interaction.
moreover, technoblade was For Sure being opportunistic in trying to recruit tommy. I’ve made my own analysis on techno obviously trying to prime tommy for a partnership at the start of tommy’s exile. but at the same time, I don’t think that’s necessarily Solely about taking advantage of what tommy could do for him, especially since he was trying to recruit tommy before he’d had his mind set on actively destroying l’manberg.
assuming that technoblade was as hurt by tommy as he was because he genuinely Cared about tommy, because he and tommy Were friends and he enjoyed his company, then he very well could’ve recognized that tommy being betrayed by the same people he was would open him up to being able to relate to him. techno and tommy have very fun interactions when there’s nothing driving them against each other, but they’re fundamentally incompatible on their morality and philosophies.
so the obvious solution to that would be one showing the other that their way of thinking was wrong, to let their relationship thrive without that barrier between them. and like, obviously technoblade is the extremist of the situation, it’s a little hard to swallow him trying to change tommy when he’s the one that refuses to compromise even when tommy tries to do it for him. but I think it’s worth recognizing when we’re having a conversation about whether or not he Solely saw tommy as an asset to use rather than a companion. if you choose to read techno as someone who refuses to compromise on his ideals but craves that interaction anyways, then the way he scooped tommy up while trying to relate tommy’s situation to his own, trying to convince them that l’manberg was bad for him, etc, can be read in a Much Less overtly malicious light. it’s still not a Healthy one, but at least it’s not Child Labor Meat Shield.
this particular reading Does have the fact that techno didn’t try to recruit anyone else on its side. for the entirety of tommy’s exile up until doomsday he didn’t try to seek out partnerships with anyone, even though there were Several people unaffiliated with l’manberg at the time. he sought tommy out the First Day of his exile, surely the moment he heard of it, and he was Noticeably Eager to partner with him the moment he’d found him in his house. if that was nothing but pure unadulterated ambition and opportunity seeking then you’d think he’d try to make at least One ally in the meantime.
then again, tommy was the most vulnerable person on the server at the time, you don’t have to know about tommy’s abuse to know that. if you choose to read techno as solely opportunistic then it’s easy to dismiss all of that and say that techno went for tommy because he saw it as the safest bet and that he didn’t gun for any other allies before him because he didn’t see it as immediately necessary until he’d been provoked. but on the other hand, it makes a lot of Sense that a character who’d just cut himself off from every ally he could’ve had but One would be kind of desperate for any chance at connection that he could get. that he’d seize the opportunity specifically Because he enjoyed his relationship with tommy before it went south and he wants to have a close partnership like that again.
technoblade’s a highly paranoid character, so you could argue that he’d try to seek out any partnership he could get his hands on if he was truly actively gunning for allies to the point of being willing to overlook his grudge against tommy to scoop him up as soon as possible. but on the other hand, technoblade’s a highly paranoid character, so he might not want to Risk someone ratting him out to the enemy if he can’t trust them or if they aren’t as neutral as they seem to be.
so ! with all that in mind I think that it’s a valid take to argue that technoblade’s actions could’ve been considered abusive whether he realized it or not, but I also think that it’s a valid take to say that it might not’ve been the intention of the roleplayers at the time and that some of the details that can be used to come to the conclusion that technoblade was abusive were tinged by cc!techno’s humor and him not thinking through the implications of tommy’s current arc. both takes make sense within the context of what we’ve been presented, we just need to make the space for both within overall analysis.

I have a small headcanon that Sansa has already skinchanged into a bird without her knowledge once before. This passage about Marillion in the sky cells in particular:
“When she closed her eyes she could see him in his sky cell, huddled in a corner away from the cold black sky, crouched beneath a fur with his woodharp cradled against his chest.”
What do you think?
Oh, absolutely. I do think that she’s experienced her powers in some way, she just hasn’t thought about them.
George does leave these little subtle hints in the text that point to the Stark kids abilities, the earliest being in chapter one:
Halfway across the bridge, Jon pulled up suddenly.
“What is it, Jon?” their lord father asked.
“Can’t you hear it?”
Bran could hear the wind in the trees, the clatter of their hooves on the ironwood planks, the whimpering of his hungry pup, but Jon was listening to something else.
“There,” Jon said. He swung his horse around and galloped back across the bridge. They watched him dismount where the direwolf lay dead in the snow, watched him kneel. A moment later he was riding back to them, smiling.
“He must have crawled away from the others,” Jon said. (Bran I, AGOT)
While on horseback, and halfway across the bridge, already far away from where a mute direwolf puppy was, Jon was able to “hear” him. Obviously, he didn’t hear Ghost, he sensed him. Already, he was bonded with Ghost, even though this was about a year and half before Jon had his first “true” wolf dream. And furthermore, it takes a while before he’s able to clearly remember these dreams:
The wolf dreams had been growing stronger, and he found himself remembering them even when awake. (Jon I, ADWD)
So, yes, I definitely think that Sansa could already be having skinchanging dreams with a bird/birds. She just might not remember it. Also, she doesn’t have to have been having direct dreams, but moments of using the bird’s senses. Not fully in the animal, just sharing it’s space for a moment.
Unlike the sh*w, where skinchanging is an on/off switch (you’re either inside the animal or not inside the animal), skinchanging in the books is more nuanced. Jon is able to brush his hand up against Ghost and tap into the wolf’s senses, without fully warging him. He can even taste blood in his mouth after Ghost kills, and he can feel the wolf’s hunger. The most notable instance of this “one mind in two bodies simultaneously” thing is with Arya and the Braavos street cat:
That night she dreamed she was a wolf again, but it was different from the other dreams. In this dream she had no pack. She prowled alone, bounding over rooftops and padding silently beside the banks of a canal, stalking shadows through the fog. (Cat of the Canals, AFFC)
The tavern was near empty, and she was able to claim a quiet corner not far from the fire. No sooner had she settled there and crossed her legs than something brushed up against her thigh. "You again?" said the blind girl. She scratched his head behind one ear, and the cat jumped up into her lap and began to purr. Braavos was full of cats, and no place more than Pynto's. The old pirate believed they brought good luck and kept his tavern free of vermin. "You know me, don't you?" she whispered. Cats were not fooled by a mummer's moles. They remembered Cat of the Canals.
[...]
The Lyseni took the table nearest to the fire and spoke quietly over cups of black tar rum, keeping their voices low so no one could overhear. But she was no one and she heard most every word. And for a time it seemed that she could see them too, through the slitted yellow eyes of the tomcat purring in her lap. One was old and one was young and one had lost an ear, but all three had the white-blond hair and smooth fair skin of Lys, where the blood of the old Freehold still ran strong. (The Blind Girl, ADWD)
"It is good to know. This is two. Is there a third?"
"Yes. I know that you're the one who has been hitting me." Her stick flashed out, and cracked against his fingers, sending his own stick clattering to the floor.
The priest winced and snatched his hand back. "And how could a blind girl know that?"
I saw you. "I gave you three. I don't need to give you four." Maybe on the morrow she would tell him about the cat that had followed her home last night from Pynto's, the cat that was hiding in the rafters, looking down on them. Or maybe not. If he could have secrets, so could she. (The Blind Girl, ADWD)
While Arya is not fully outside of her body and in the body of the cat, she’s able to use the cat’s eyes as her own. And she isn’t even aware that she’s doing it, it’s just occurring naturally. I do believe that the same cat she dreams as in AFFC is the tomcat that she sees through in ADWD.
So, yes, I do believe that Sansa could be looking through the eyes of a bird. She’s just not aware of it.
It does seem like the Stark kids are much more powerful than the average skinchangers/wargs, immediately bonding to the wolves without realizing it, and already connecting with other animals. Arya is able to warg Nymeria from an entirely separate continent, which probably isn’t standard behavior, especially not for someone who doesn’t even know what they’re doing and has no training. Even Varamyr, a man who has mastered the control of five animals, recognizes Jon’s power:
The gift was strong in Snow, but the youth was untaught, still fighting his nature when he should have gloried in it. (Prologue, ADWD)
So, the Starks seem to be pretty powerful. And that includes Sansa, as GRRM has confirmed that she is still a skinchanger, meaning that he’s definitely going to have a bond with an animal at some point. It would make sense for him to have already been leaving little hints about it.
A very important component to Sansa’s character, which could be affecting her skinchanging powers, is her memory. The way that Sansa’s mind has coped with her trauma is by suppressing and rewriting certain distressing, scarring, and confusing memories. This is something that all the Stark kids do, in different levels. For example, Bran believes that Rickon intentionally suppresses the memory of Ned being dead:
"Tell Robb I want him to come home," said Rickon. "He can bring his wolf home too, and Mother and Father." Though he knew Lord Eddard was dead, sometimes Rickon forgot... willfully, Bran suspected. (Bran V, ACOK)
Bran himself does this as well:
The dream he'd had... the dream Summer had had... No, I mustn't think about that dream. He had not even told the Reeds, though Meera at least seemed to sense that something was wrong. If he never talked of it maybe he could forget he ever dreamed it, and then it wouldn't have happened and Robb and Grey Wind would still be... (Bran IV, ASOS)
Sansa does this the most out of her siblings, it’s her primary coping mechanism. One example is how remembers (or tries not to remember) Jeyne Poole:
Sansa did not know what had happened to Jeyne, who had disappeared from her rooms afterward, never to be mentioned again. She tried not to think of them too often, yet sometimes the memories came unbidden, and then it was hard to hold back the tears. (Sansa II, ACOK)
She tries to not to think of her, because it’s too traumatic for her to do so.
Another example is how she’s trying to process the situations she’s in at the Eyrie.
I am not your daughter, she thought. I am Sansa Stark, Lord Eddard's daughter and Lady Catelyn's, the blood of Winterfell. She did not say it, though. If not for Petyr Baelish it would have been Sansa who went spinning through a cold blue sky to stony death six hundred feet below, instead of Lysa Arryn. He is so bold. Sansa wished she had his courage. She wanted to crawl back into bed and hide beneath her blanket, to sleep and sleep. She had not slept a whole night through since Lysa Arryn's death. (Sansa I, AFFC)
He is serving me lies as well, Sansa realized. They were comforting lies, though, and she thought them kindly meant. A lie is not so bad if it is kindly meant. If only she believed them...
The things her aunt had said just before she fell still troubled Sansa greatly. "Ravings," Petyr called them. "My wife was mad, you saw that for yourself." And so she had. All I did was build a snow castle, and she meant to push me out the Moon Door. Petyr saved me. He loved my mother well, and...
And her? How could she doubt it? He had saved her.
He saved Alayne, his daughter, a voice within her whispered. But she was Sansa too... and sometimes it seemed to her that the Lord Protector was two people as well. He was Petyr, her protector, warm and funny and gentle... but he was also Littlefinger, the lord she'd known at King's Landing, smiling slyly and stroking his beard as he whispered in Queen Cersei's ear. And Littlefinger was no friend of hers. When Joff had her beaten, the Imp defended her, not Littlefinger. When the mob sought to rape her, the Hound carried her to safety, not Littlefinger. When the Lannisters wed her to Tyrion against her will, Ser Garlan the Gallant gave her comfort, not Littlefinger. Littlefinger never lifted so much as his little finger for her.
Except to get me out. He did that for me. I thought it was Ser Dontos, my poor old drunken Florian, but it was Petyr all the while. Littlefinger was only a mask he had to wear. Only sometimes Sansa found it hard to tell where the man ended and the mask began. Littlefinger and Lord Petyr looked so very much alike. She would have fled them both, perhaps, but there was nowhere for her to go. Winterfell was burned and desolate, Bran and Rickon dead and cold. Robb had been betrayed and murdered at the Twins, along with their lady mother. Tyrion had been put to death for killing Joffrey, and if she ever returned to King's Landing the queen would have her head as well. The aunt she'd hoped would keep her safe had tried to murder her instead. Her uncle Edmure was a captive of the Freys, while her great-uncle the Blackfish was under siege at Riverrun. I have no place but here, Sansa thought miserably, and no true friend but Petyr. (Sansa I, AFFC)
Sansa knows deep down (not even that deep, just down) that Petyr is untrustworthy. She knows he’s fed her lies, but she wants to believe them. She wants to be able to trust him. She wants to feel like she can be safe with him. She wants to be safe. It bothers me a lot whenever people say Sansa is “stupid” for trusting Petyr, or “uncaring” for not thinking often of Jeyne. She isn’t stupid or uncaring, she’s a traumatized thirteen year old whose brain is trying to cope with what she’s gone through and what she’s currently going through.
So, she has built a wall. And behind that wall are the memories of Lysa’s death, the truth about Jon Arryn’s murder, and Jeyne Poole. I think it would make sense if skinchanging, something that involves the mind, is also something that she’s subconsciously repressing. I talked about this sometime a while ago, but I believe that a big moment for Sansa in TWOW is going to be her confronting her memories. And most significantly, confronting Baelish about what happened to Jeyne Poole and exposing the truth of Jon Arryn and Lysa’s deaths. Thus, defeating Littlefinger, the mockingbird.
It would make sense if this coincided with her skinchanging abilities truly awakening. As her mind opens, her powers become stronger. I’m pretty deadset on Sansa’s bird being a falcon, not just for the House Arryn connection and because she’s gone hawking with a falcon before, but also because of the symbolism. Falcons symbolize “vision, freedom, and victory. Hence, it also connotes salvation to those who are in bondage whether moral, emotional, or spiritual”. I think that Sansa bonding with a falcon and “flying free” would be perfect for the conclusion of her caged bird arc.
Sorry, this got really long, it just kind of turned into all my thoughts about how skinchanger-Sansa might come to be in TWOW. I think it’s going to be an important part of her story, as you don’t just give four of your POV characters the ability to control animals with their minds and not have that matter. (And, it’s already an important part of Jon, Arya, and Bran’s stories, so it most likely will be for Sansa, too.)

Rewriting my Diluc housewife thoughts but I saved it in my notes this time, but I made it infinitely more sexist than it already was before bc 1) I was in the kink mood and 2) the spirits of writing gods possessed my body and told me that is the way all Diluc content should be, so, this is major 1950s-ish housewifey horrendously misogynistic shit, you've been warned. Like, even *I* looked back over this and was like "wow this is vile" which is kinda saying something for me so, putting the nastier parts under cut for the sake of my followers' eyes ----------- I was thinking about the post a while back about Diluc reforming a criminal darling - a thief around Mondstadt that's been on a crime spree and of course he catches wind of that and goes to defeat the perpetrator (surprisingly very easy? How is a thief this weak?) and haul the bastard off to jail except... What's this? Said criminal is actually just some girl and not a gross ugly bastard?? This changes things. Clearly, this was not an intentional act of malice or greed, but rather, he, master of criminal psychology™, rationalizes that the world is far too cruel for unwifed girls that have no one to depend on, a cold terrible place, so you must have been driven to these actions out of desperation. You had no provider, no caretaker, which are needs. How could you possibly be expected to provide a means of living for yourself?? This is just the consequences of the unfairness of the world. However, things all work out in the end. You need to be taken care of and restrained from these self-destructive choices by force (since you cannot recognize how bad it is, not that you're expected to, it's natural that you have poor perception, that's why you need a man to make choices for you), and he needs a wife. This solution benefits all parties.
He is, however, a rather dense man, and doesn't really think to like, tell you that. Or tell you anything. He's too lost in thought in his planning -- gonna get you new clothes to replace your ragged ones, gonna have to rearrange the guard schedule so they can watch the house better, all that -- and just kinda slings you up and over his shoulder without a word. Ignores you kicking and hitting because it doesn't really hurt or anything, you're too weak for that. Just says he’ll explain in detail later, but don’t worry, you’re not going to jail. He’s just taking you home. This is better, he says. Stop struggling so much, what, you want to go to jail? No? Then be still. And you don't recognize that it's good for you yet, but again, that's expected. In a better time or society, you would have been married off sooner, and prevented from ever falling victim to your own decision making to begin with, but the world isn't perfect and you can be forgiven for it. You're not responsible for your own actions since you can't comprehend them. It's frustrating and he sighs a bit over it, but that's just the way things are. You'll be happy in the long run, even if it takes a while, you're naturally programmed for a better lifestyle he has in mind. And, really, he's glad you weren't married off, because if you were then he never would have had you, so even though it was technically unideal, the stars align and the universe works out things perfectly. It's all the more of a sign that this was fate and you were made for him. The issue is that a hardened criminal darling is... Not the ideal candidate for a housewife. To some extent, he's right that the criminal underworld hardens a person, you can't survive in that realm if you're submissive or weak willed. And criminal darling certainly is not. Loud mouthed, opinionated, argumentative, bad attitude, defiant and aggressive and very much unafraid. A complete loose cannon. All very unfavorable traits. Worst of all, very much unaccepting of and ungrateful for the privilege of a second chance and being graciously granted the opportunity for a better life. Lots of bad behaviors.
The cursing is a problem. It's not very... Wife-like. Gives off a bad image, you know. Especially since said cursing is usually directed at him at a very loud volume with a snarl and getting all up in his face to tell him he's fucking insane and a bastard. To be honest, the worst part isn't the words themselves, it's the fact that you are so unafraid to be defiant and so fiery that is the primary issue. You disobey very deliberately. Little acts of pettiness. Being mean to the maids who are so graciously trying to teach you how to cook (at his direction), since you had no idea how to (and nearly burned his house down as a result). The first time you were mean and bitter and that's how you learned they report back to him about how you behaved. It did not go over well.
Intentionally burning food. Once you somehow found a bottle in a cabinet somewhere in the mansion and put rat poison in his food, made him sick. Muttering a sarcastic whoops and shoving a vase off to crash and shatter on the floor. Early on you refused to wear all the nice dresses you were generously given and even tried to go through his clothes to find something to wear, which was kinda cute since it was way too big, but still. You mutter and grumble under your breath every time you're given a command. The most important thing is sex, though. You know, your job. One of your only real responsibilities. He has a very stressful job. It's only reasonable that he can expect to come home to his sweet, loving little wife with open arms and equally open legs. You've probably fucked around a bit right? For money, for favors, for intel, you get the idea, lots of ties to criminal gangs to earn their trust. So, if you do it for something so insignificant, how much more does he deserve it for taking care of you fully? You should -- and you will, with time -- drop to your knees the second he walks through the door. But instead, sigh, you fight and whimper and cover your face in shame after you spasm and cum, and worst of all, you actively try not to cum. You shouldn't feel ashamed of that, it's good, he says. Sure, you may not be officially married (since the laws of Mondstadt unfortunately require that whole "consent" thing for both parties, ugh), but, he's basically your husband right? So, it's perfectly normal, you're supposed to cum for him. Maybe once you're all knocked up you'll be even hornier, and less shameful. He actually wasn't expecting you to be this bad. Incredibly stubborn and prideful. Literally the exact opposite traits of a good wife, you know, submissive and humble and obedient. He kinda thought that it was like... automatic. That once he just kinda shoved you in the right environment, it would be like flipping a switch right? Apparently not. But no matter. It can be changed, with effort and time. You're worth it. See, you're not supposed to backtalk him, you're supposed to smile and do what you're told without question. You're supposed to submit and obey, and instead you seem hellbent on pissing him off out of spite - and frankly, you're doing a good job of achieving that. Every time you defy him it sparks an irritation he can't describe, worse than he'd normally get from just being snarled at by anyone - no, something about being disrespected by someone he feels is beneath him makes him much, much angrier than it would be if it were, say, one of the business partners who get snappy and argumentative very frequently. He could break you and it would be easy, don't you know that? You stomp and you hit him and you yell, but clearly you process that you have to look up to look him in the eye, you have to realize how much smaller you are. You hit him even though you have to know by now he'll just grab your wrists, and like always you'll be unable to even hope of pulling out of his grip, the strength difference between you two is so great. There's no way you don't realize all that, yet you continue to behave the way you do. The inferiority is so blatantly obvious, but you act as if it's not. He spends a lot of time contemplating the source of this, the cause of your behavior, it occupies his thoughts. It's like... You resent him for something. Could it possibly be kidnapping you and keeping you as a glorified sex slave? No, no, that's not it. It's something else, yes. Are you just bitter about being inferior in, you know, every conceivable way? Is that it? The criminality for you was compensation to make you feel powerful, perhaps. You have a complex. You resent him not for anything he's done, but because you know he's stronger and smarter and generally superior to you. You don't want to accept it. You're prideful when you shouldn't be. You're supposed to be humble and content with your inferiority. Yeah, that's it. You just have a negative perception of the lifestyle you're supposed to have. Maybe some event in your life or someone else warped your view of things. You don't realize how happy you'd be if you just accepted it. Yes, if you submitted to it, if you swallowed your pride and actually accepted your place, you'd find you would be very happy, you just don't know that. Or maybe, your brain can't grasp something like that. After all, that's the reason you're supposed to be the submissive party of the two of you, you're not as bright or perceptive (says the densest man alive). You have to be... Led. Guided. So he says it. He is, again, a dense man. He does not really think about the fact that perhaps blatantly confronting you with the epiphany he thinks he's had and specifically using the words inferior and weak and small is probably not going to make you very happy. You get bitchy and bratty and try to hit him and he sighs because, see, this is exactly what he's talking about. You reacting the way you did only confirms you do have a complex, he says. So, how could he go about... reconditioning? He is not the most creative man, but thankfully it's a rather easy problem to solve. If you're reminded of a reality often enough, you have to accept it. For starters, using physical strength against you. Maybe that will metaphorically open your eyes. Holds you down in place when you're hitting him like you do, firmly bending you over a counter or whatever and just holding you in place. Come on, try to get up, try to push him off. You snarl and claw at the marble and push will all your strength, but he doesn't budge, not until you politely apologize and ask him to let you up. If you're being difficult and not going where he tells you to, well, he can just sling you up over his shoulder and carry you. If you're fighting being fucked he can just flip you over and press your face into the mattress and hold you still, and you can't help but take the brutal reality that you're basically a ragdoll to him, that is, physically overpowering you doesn't even require trying. It helps to knock you down a peg, remind you of your place and maybe get you to swallow that pride a bit. The orgasms and fucking have a similar effect -- every time you can't help but feel like he has a power over you. And really, he kinda does. Every time you lay there still panting and shivering in aftershock, the shame comes swarming in, all the obscene noises you made and the way you came undone under the person that treats you like property. Even if the rational part of you knows better, you can't help but feel like in a way it's like you let him win, allowed yourself to more or less prove him right. Maybe you'll learn better if you're in more humiliating positions. Stuck getting rammed from behind, hand forcing your face down and ass up. Actually correcting bad behaviors requires more direct approaches, so he takes the... Old fashioned route. After all, it's pretty much guaranteed to work. You don't listen to words, you don't listen to reason, but you'll certainly listen to handprints and belt welts on your ass. It's the first time you really, truly break, and that brings him a lot of satisfaction. The first time you really cry and whimper and beg and apologize so profusely it feels like you mean it for once. Granted, for a while you just persist in your bad behaviors and even try to run when you see him sigh and take the belt off, but you never get far. And, most notably, you actually fix your behaviors, with enough reminders. At one point, the next time you start being bad and get to bitching and snarling and putting up a fight, you catch the look on his face and, for once, you shut your mouth and look down and mumble an apology by default. See, you're learning. Speaking of, you still have that major issue with backtalking him. You're supposed to submit to him and acknowledge his authority over you. So he gets firm. Grabs you by the jaw and forces you to look him in the eye and reminds you that you will *not* get an attitude with him. You *will* show some respect. You say yes sir and no sir and do what you're told. And if you forget, he can give you a reminder, if you want that. But you shake your head with fear in your eyes, say you don't want that. It makes you mad. You want to lash back, but you swallow your pride and mutter a fine - before realizing the mistake, violating the rule you were just reminded of. You stammer out a yes sir but it's already too late. He has to control himself too, not let his anger get the better of him. He speaks in a way that isn't snarling and mean, but rather firm, cold, a flat tone that asserts dominance and demands respect. But... still wants you to like him. So he has to be nice, too. After all, you'll learn better if you're rewarded for being good, right? So you can get little rewards. Words of affirmation. A pat to the head. He'll buy you something you want, let you drink a bit (since, as a thief, of course, you had a problem with that before you came home, but that had to be corrected too, since drunkenness isn't very befitting). And sooner or later he does have a really good little wife. He's proud of you. You smile and obey commands without complaining. He can come home every day, and rather than hearing a long report from the staff about how much trouble you caused that day, instead you have food and smiles and sweet affection waiting on him, you hug him when he walks through the door. You're polite and sweet to the various business partners and guests that come through -- you don't speak to them without permission though, of course, and you look down at the ground so you don't make eye contact with another man. People say he's lucky and how they wish they had a wife that was so outwardly affectionate to them as you are to him, always clinging to him physically. And you don't complain or every object to anything, you just smile and say yes and do it. It makes him happy in a weird way he can't quite articulate. A warm swell of pride, a feeling of success. You have vague memories of a time when you were breaking into houses just to scrape by, not knowing when you'd eat next, not knowing where you'd sleep. It's kind of a fuzzy memory now. You don't have to worry about those things anymore, and you're a lot happier this way.

About the cupid scene, Nico was forced to come out, but its also made very clear that Cupid is the bad guy. So is Aphrodite to an extent. They have a twisted and fundamental misunderstanding of love and how it works for mortals. I get that people could be mad about how Nico was forced to come out and putting him through more emotional trauma, but I also think its very realistic in showing how callous and cruel the gods understanding of love is.
I am reminded of the quote by Madeline Miller, "There is no law that gods must be fair..."
I also understand why the scene might be traumatic for other young LGBTQ+ readers, I've seen a lot of people talk about the fear of being outed in regards to them reading that scene as a kid. I completely respect their feelings on that, and I understand that as well. However, as someone who had been forcibly outed once before reading that scene, that scene really helped heal me. I don't think the Cupid scene is inherently homophobic, and I'm often bothered by the lack of nuance regarding around how it's handled.
I recognize it's a very emotional scene, and that people may have a hard time fully separating their emotions from that scene, but at the same time if there's a group of people saying "hey I understand why you disliked this scene but it was really helpful to me as a child because of the different experiences I had" maybe slow the breaks and hear what others also in the community have to say before determining if the scene is homophobic. You don't have to like the scene, and yeah maybe the scene did hurt you but that doesn't make it homophobic.
I want to specify on my word choice there a little closer, because of course outing someone is an act of homophobia, and the scene is homophobic in that sense. However often times the conversation about homophobia in this scene goes to "Rick was homophobic for writing this" where personally I would say this scene toes the line at being too far without ever crossing it. Some people may think this depiction crosses the line into "Rick was homophobic for writing this" which is fine, but just because something depicted homophobia and hurt you doesn't mean it was homophobic. Something doesn't have to out rightly be stated to be bad, in order to be read as bad*, and the Cupid scene does a wonderful job of depicting this.
I talk here about how Nico is shown what love is, and how love is treated by Nico, and how it affects his character. I think it's important to note that Nico's entire storyline can essentially be encompassed in an Orpheus-like or Odyssey-like tale. Nico's undergone this huge emotional and physical labor all in the name of having some form of unconditional love. I think that post is a really important read in the context of this one because I very carefully outline how love shapes Nico and how Nico shape and chooses his own definition of love, but I want to specifically dig into the Cupid scene on this post.
The big criticism often seen is "it's homophobic" which I covered above, and I want to clarify I'm not upset with or mad at or trying to tell anyone they can't dislike it or even say you can't say it's homophobic (my words on my one post are a bit off I'll admit) but the problem I have is when people believe they hold a moral high ground for thinking it's homophobic, or they remove all nuance from the discussion with "it's homophobic". Which is frustrating and annoying because it's a very complex scene, and it really changes Nico's arc and personality and it does help characterize him.
The big reason it shapes him so much is because of the other largest reason the scene is criticized, Cupid's behavior. What often fails to be recognized in those scenes is that Cupid is intentionally painted as the villain, this is very important to the scene.
In the context of this scene Nico makes an unspoken choice, a choice of "what is love to me?". I talk about how Nico claims his narrative in BoTL when he overcomes Minos, and he partially peaks that arc by convincing Gods to join the final battle of TLO. Following that arc however, Nico falls into his second arc, his crush on Percy was important in PJO, but not as important as it is in HoO.
By HoO Nico's entire character revolves around Percy, how to help Percy, how to aid Percy, etc. All of this has to do with Nico's crush on Percy, but also as an act of repayment because Nico hurt Percy- Nico lied to him about knowing him at New Rome in SoN, and he goes to Tartarus shortly after... This mirrors what Percy did after Hades tricked Nico... Percy choked Nico because he was upset with him, so Nico tried to win back Percy's affection by bathing him in the river.
The Cupid Scene is the resolution of Nico's arc, he is essentially given a choice- Cupid or Jason?
For this reason, we do see Nico recognize love for what it has been vs how it could be.
Cupid is there to represent what love is, to Nico love is brutal, and painful, and a lot of hard work... Nico has made himself utilitarian in love simply because it is the only way he can find any affection. Love to Nico is about flaying yourself for the benefit of others, to trample any and all parts of yourself simply to appease those you care for, because you want them to love you so much as you love them. The parallels I could draw between Nico and Orpheus, or Nico and Odysseus... I'd be here a long while...
In that scene Jason represents the alternative form of love which Nico chooses after his interaction with Cupid.
Jason says during the scene that he "preferred Piper's idea of love" which has to do with kindness and caring, etc, and then Jason becomes the embodiment of that idea during the scene- which showcases the alternative of what love can be, thus making Jason a personification of love in the context of that scene.
Jason looks to Nico, he doesn't ask for more, he simply looks to Nico with understanding and acknowledges him for who he is, and he does the exact opposite of what Nico expects:
Tumblr media
Jason loves Nico where he is, without conditions, without forcing Nico to become something more. Jason didn’t force Nico to say more than what was necessary for him to understand, Jason looked at Nico and he called Nico brave.
Cupid is a more volatile form of love than Aphrodite, Cupid shoots arrows that makes people animals, that can make a god grow insane, but Aphrodite's form of love is about acceptance and humanity (think to how she picked Ares over Hephaestus even if it was perhaps "wrong")- both are about truth but one is about force and the other about acceptance.
When Nico walks out of there, he makes his choice- he is forced to come out yes, Cupid is wrong for doing this, but Jason again stays a figure of love in Nico's life. Jason basically says, "Good job, I know that was hard, thank you for sharing and let me know if you need anything, people will care about you and understand you," again and again and again to Nico, he doesn't tell Nico he has to come out, and he agrees to keep it between them for now. Jason is love as acceptance, Jason is the first person who unconditionally loves Nico, and that's the choice.
Will Nico accept unconditional love? If the answer is no, then Cupid wins and Nico is denying himself. If the answer is yes, then Jason and Nico win, and Nico no longer needs to make himself utilitarian in love in order to be loved.
The choice is made with Reyna and Hedge, most specifically Reyna.
When he accidentally comes out to them, and they accept him without making a big deal of it, without show, just that acknowledgement and "thank you for sharing" and Nico accepts their words and friendship still- Nico made his choice then to accept the love he was being freely given.
“He carried so much sadness and loneliness, so much heartache. Yet he put his mission first. He persevered. Reyna respected that. She understood that. She'd never been a touchy-feely person, but she had the strangest desire to drape her cloak over Nico's shoulders and tuck him in. She mentally chided herself. He was a comrade, not her little brother. He wouldn't appreciate the gesture.”
This is where we see the slow and steady, and healthy, end to Nico's arc in regards to love really grow into itself, and he begins to heal. He no longer sees such an intense need to make himself utilitarian for love, and he begins to heal from his internalized homophobia too.
(Internalized homophobia discussions with Nico also bother me too often times, people too often assume you can't date while struggling with internalized homophobia or at least very heavy handedly imply that which is just not true... You may have some issues in your relationship, but you can work through the internalized homophobia while building a new relationship and be just fine. Also to assume someone has an unhealthy relationship because of internalized homophobia is weird and lowkey reinforces the idea that "broken" people don't need love, but also does a huge disservice to so many LGBTQ+ people who are happily married/themselves but still struggle with these feelings, and to see a healthy relationship depiction despite someone in that relationship struggling with internalized homophobia is fine and good actually. As long as the individual can recognize what they're dealing with, and work through it in a healthy and constructive manner, then there's nothing wrong there...)
When I started this post to be honest I thought I would have a lot more to say, it's a scene that touched and changed me so deeply as a person, and beyond that in a more objective experience it completely changes Nico's character, by turning his arc around and beginning his healing process. To be honest, there probably is more to be said on it, I just haven't found the words yet... I know parts of this post are clunky and in a year I'm going to read this and see all the places it could be better but for now I'm content with it.
Whether or not someone considers the scene homophobic is a subjective experience, but I think this is a very well written scene purely for the characterization and symbolism, intentional or otherwise. I don't really care that much to debate if it's truly a homophobic scene or not, I can see both why people say it is and why people say it isn't and that can be culminated into "people have different needs" and "minorities aren't a monolith". Personally my much larger complaint is the complete lack of nuance and insight scenes like this are handled with, not the matter of personal opinion an individual reaches on the scene.
*the post uses the word "adult audience" and yes, fair point, children should not be able to decipher symbolism to the extent adults can. But older children and young teens, which the RRverse series are sold for, is when critical thinking skills and media analysis do begin to become parts of classroom curriculum. The scene does an excellent job of not outright stating Cupid is evil, but of depicting that in a very clear cut way.

Runaway assassin
Obi x reader
You'd been alone for a while, and by a while I mean years. You'd quit your old job, or rather you ran away from it. Now you were taking random jobs that were simple and spread out so you could travel. Get to see the world.
Thing was you were always moving because well your ex-boss was a total prick. You'd worked for him as an assassin of sorts. You enforced things, hurt people, did anything that he told you to.
It's not that you enjoyed hurting others, but it kept you alive. You used to have a partner, but he had disappeared, leaving you, after going on a job with your sister, Torou.
When she came back you rushed to her looking for him, but she just smiled sadly and told you he was gone. You'd missed him, but accepted that he made his choice.
Currently however you followed his example and were free to do what you wanted, when you wanted. You'd left the man, that life, behind.
With that in mind you had decided to visit Clarines. Beautiful place really. Many opportunities. Running around and rushing through the streets you darted over a wagon leaping down.
As you landed you sprinted away apologizing to the driver. As you dashed through another alley you yelped when you bumped into someone, hard.
As you both began to fall, you grabbed their arm and used your weight to counteract theirs, pulling yourself forward and spinning around. You smiled at your success, having stopped a tragic fall for both of you.
"Hey, sorry about that I was just really excited!" You apologized glancing up, "I'm y/n!"
The person you had almost had a spill with was a girl about your age. She smiled softly, her bright green eyes glittering, and apple red hair shining. You elected not to point out the obvious though.
"It's alright. I'm Shirayuki. You must be new here! I'd show you around but I have to get to the castle." She frowned seeming to be a little sad at that thought.
"Well then here's a proposal. I'll go with you to the castle and help you out. Then we can talk and you can do what you need to. I'll be like your own personal attendant, yea?" You grinned pointing to yourself.
"I mean... We could try it! Sure let's go." She smiled taking your hand and leading the way to the castle.
On the walk she'd told you all about her friends and her love interest Zen, the second Prince of Clarines. You'd also been informed of her role in the castle. A herbalist. You got excited and told her that you were actually quite experienced with the plants and their properties given your old establishment.
After a while you were in front of a set of gates, two guards stood at their post.
"Shirayuki! Good to see you. Who's your friend?" One of the guards inquired staring behind her, to you. Taking charge you stepped forward, crouching into a curtsey.
"I'm y/n! Her attendant. I'm here to help her out." You smiled sweetly, causing the other guard to blush.
"I see. Well the prince is inside awaiting your arrival. Good day Shirayuki, y/n." The guard smiled as he opened the large gate.
As you walked in you gasped. This place was huge! White pillars filled the courtyard and several plants and trees grew along the white stone that seemed to be a path.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Shirayuki giggled nudging you.
"Absolutely." You breathed out, eyes wide as you took in your surroundings before turning to look at her.
She grinned at you before waving you forward, encouraging you to follow her. Following closely you listened as Shirayuki told you about how she'd met the prince and his attendents, along with his most recent addition. Obi.
You had heard the name and paused momentarily. She seemed to notice the slight shift in your behavior because she turned to face you.
"Are you alright?" She asked tilting her head, her brows creasing in worry.
Your mind raced as you mulled over the idea that it could be your Obi. It couldn't be him though, could it? Shaking your head you slapped your cheeks. It had to be someone else.
"Of course! I'm sorry I just recognized the name is all. I'm totally fine!" You smiled grabbing her hand.
"We should hurry! Don't wanna keep the prince waiting do we?" You winked and she flushed.
  "Right!"
With that you both hurried off. Walking into the prince's quarters was nerve wracking. Not because you were scared or nervous because of him or anything, rather the idea that his attendant could be your Obi.
Shirayuki knocked on the door and a muffled come in was called out. Pushing the door open she led you inside and began with the introductions.
"Zen, Mistuhide, Kiki, Obi, this is y/n. Y/n this is Zen, Mistuhide, Kiki, and Obi." You glanced at each of them, but froze once you reached the tall brunette.
Obi. It was actually your Obi. Once his cat like eyes reached yours he too froze.
"Y/n? Are you alright?" Zen asked standing up, once he realized you seemed to be zoning out. Your eyes snapped over to him anxiously.
"Of course! I'm sorry, how rude of me. I'm Y/n Woods, Shira's new attendent." You bowed giving the fake last name naturally.
Obi's eyes widened slightly. You felt his gaze train on you as the other two began their own greeting. You smiled at them and told them a little about yourself.
Once the introductions were finished Shirayuki dragged you off to work. Garak didn't seem to mind your company nor did Ryuu. You seemed to fit right in. Luckily for you there didn't seem to be much work today so maybe you could explore.
Near sundown Shira asked you to drop one last concoction she brewed up off to Garak's office. Smiling you grabbed the liquid up and told her you'd be back in a jiffy.
As soon as you were gone Shirayuki sighed. Turning around she found Obi right behind her crouched in the window.
"Obi!" She yelped her hand flying up to her chest.
"What are you doing here? Were you looking for y/n?" She inquired steadying her breathing.
"How'd y'know?" He chuckled rubbing the back of his neck.
  She just smiled softly.
"I don't know. Maybe it's the way you've been creeping around all day?" She smirked knowing she had him in a corner.
"You see funny story. I was just conveniently around. Definitely not following." He defended weakly and she shook her head.
"Oh sure. Convenient." She teased straightening some of her papers.
Obi sighed his shoulders drooping. He'd definitely been caught. Slinking out of the window sill he walked over and began to put some of the jars and containers away.
"I know her. Knew her. She's a part of my past, better forgotten." Shrugging Obi looked over his eyes slowly widening. You were now standing behind Shirayuki. Your eyes were wide and glistening with unshed tears.
Better forgotten? You were better forgotten because you were a part of his past? He left you on purpose?
"You left me intentionally? Obi you wanted to just leave and forget about me? About us?" Shirayuki jumped looking behind her.
"Y/n? That was fast." She gasped seeing the tears glisten down your cheeks.
"I can't believe you! All these years I've been worried sick, looking for you, and you left me on purpose!" You snarled.
"You know what? Fine. I'll just go back to that bastard. Maybe he'll actually want me!" You hissed.
Pushing past him you jumped out of the window and stormed toward the gate walls. You didn't have time to walk all the way to the gates.
The tears were forcing their way out and you didn't want Obi to see you cry. Running towards the wall you heard Shirayuki call out for you.
Stopping you turned to look back at her. She looked sad, but you smiled and waved. You would at least say goodbye. Then you turned and sprinted away.
"Obi! You have to go get her! Before she does something reckless!" Shirayuki whipped around pleading.
"I can't. She is making her choice. It is her choice! She is her own person if she wants to leave then I should let her. You should let her." He argued looking away.
"Obi." Shirayuki snapped catching the male off guard. Glancing up quickly he winced at the look in her eyes.
"You care about her. You loved her?" Shirayuki asked and Obi looked down.
He did love you. He did care about you. And that's why he had to let you go.
"I- that was a long time ago. I mean I still care about her but..." He sighed running his hand through his hair.
"That was gone the moment I left. She hates me for sure now." He grumbled leaning against the counter.
"She loves you." Shirayuki insisted. "She spent years looking for you. What reason could you possibly have to let her go? Again!?" She hissed out slamming a cabinet shut.
Obi looked up surprised at the sudden anger in her voice. Why was she so insistent? So angry? She didn't know about the past you and him had. About what the two of you had been through. Maybe she was right though.
However, before he could say a word Shirayuki was in his face.
"No don't answer that because actually I don't want an answer! She needs you now! She loves you! She thought you were Dead! Dead Obi!" She snapped.
"She looked for you and waited and you just.... You just are going to let her go?!"
Looking down Obi felt his eyes begin to water. He didn't want to let you go but what could he do? Pretend he didn't leave? Act like he didn't just say he wanted to forget about you?
As he thought things over he remembered the argument you'd just had and something clicked.
"Fine. I'll just go back to that bastard."
You were still stuck with Guran. That son a.... Suddenly he was turning and leaping out of the window. He landed and darted forward racing through and jumping into the trees. He needed to find you and fast. He couldn't let you go back, not to him
Back to you
You ran faster then you thought you could. He didn't want you. He left you. He willingly left you. He abandoned you. Your mind raced as you gasped, your breath came out ragged.
Tears streamed down your face as you sprinted between buildings and people. You couldn't stop. You had to keep moving or you'd collapse and never get back up. Maybe that wouldn't be so bad though. Just stopping and lying there in the empty dark.
However before you got out of your current alley way someone grabbed you. Your wrist was twisted behind your back and a hand covered your mouth.
Panic filled you and your mind was fogged with heartache. Maybe you could just give up. You had no reason to fight. Obi didn't want you and Guran would only beat and use you. Even Touru had left you. You had no fight left so you just slumped.
Your knees gave out and you sunk. The person grunted but pulled you up.
"Come on my butterfly, don't be like that." The voice caused your skin to tingle uncomfortably. Guran. He'd found you.
"Now how about we talk about how you ran away, huh?"
You closed your eyes and pushed yourself away from him, but he only gripped onto you tighter. You whimpered as he laughed.
"Please. You think I'm gonna let you go? Not now butterfly."
Before you could say anything you heard something flying through the air and gasped as you felt yourself taken from the bulky, grubby arms of Guran.
"Well how about now, you bastard." The voice was venomous. Angry.
Opening your eyes wearily and noticed the spiky brown hair immediately. Obi. He'd come for you.... But why? Your mouth went dry as you realized you'd almost let Guran take you. Your face was red and blotchy from crying you were sure.
Carefully the male set you down but kept you close. Cautiously you reached your arms up and dug your face into Obi's neck. His grip on you tightened as Guran let out a big burly laugh that sounded like a choke.
"How cute the cat and the butterfly. Look Obi I ain't got no hard feelings, but she's my property. So if you don't mind..." He took a step towards you and Obi shifted you in his arms, launching three kunai at Guran. A warning.
Snarling Guran launched at Obi. You felt the ground leave as Obi wrapped his arms around your waist launching to the right, dodging the sloppy attack. Anger was making a deadly assassin useless.
Your eyes widened as Guran turned his eyes large and wide. In his side was a kunai. You couldn't be sure if Obi had done it or if his anger had made him act that recklessly, but he looked like a pissed off bull.
Tapping Obi's shoulder you looked up to him hoping he got the message. Before Obi could respond, you pushed away from him and sped around the bleeding Guran. He was a bastard, but he wasn't stupid. He couldn't attack you both.
Obi seemed to catch on and sped the opposite way. Rushing around you noticed Guran's eyes latch onto you. He wanted you. That was enough information to know your next move.
Running towards the woods you saw earlier. Running through you pulled yourself up into a tree and began to hop tree to tree. Guran had been stabbed, hopefully that would slow him down.
Climbing and jumping, you kept going, praying Guran wasn't as close as he felt. This was certainly a game of cat and mouse, but this mouse was just as dangerous.
As you hopped towards another branch you yelped when you felt hands grasp at your ankles causing you to slip off of the branch.
You fell hard, branches digging into your skin and bruising your body. You gasped loudly when you hit the ground, the air being forced out of your lungs. Your arms were scraped, your legs ached, and your back burned.
Opening your eyes you saw Guran was growling across from you, his eyes wide and wild. Gritting your teeth you pushed yourself up before sprinting again. You heard his body clamber up, the branches snapping under his weight.
Where was Obi? Was he okay? Were you going to be okay? You didn't know but kept running. You dodged multiple trees as you gasped for air, lungs burning. Maybe you'd bruised a couple ribs.
Listening intently you heard rushing water. Legs pumping with all they were worth, you raced to the source. You gasped at the large waterfall. There was no way you could jump that.
A branch snapped behind you and you whipped around. Turning you saw Guran slinking in a primal look in his gaze. You bit the inside of your cheek as you looked around for an escape.
"You dumb bitch. You thought you could leave? That he could save you? He ran away like the coward he is." He laughed a nasally laugh. Your heart slammed against your chest, but you kept your face neutral.
"Yet I'm still standing." You replied stepping back slightly. You winced as you felt the soft ground give way slightly.
"Not for long." Your eyes widened as he pulled out his whip, quickly lashing it at your ankles.
Yelping you stepped back trying to avoid the lashing of the whip, but the ground gave way and your footing left you, rushing water frothing, ready to swallow you.
Squeezing your eyes shut you prepared for your death, silently praying it was the water that killed you and not Guran. What you didn't expect however was for someone to grab you mid-fall. Cracking your eyes open you saw the cat-like hues of Obi. He looked pissed.
"The only coward I see here is you, Guran." His voice was harsh and cold as he pulled you securely into his chest. Your heart was racing, pounding.
"Listen, Obi we never had any bad blood. I said it before, I'll say it again. Just hand the girl over. She's my property, and needs to be punished. Isn't that right, little butterfly?" You shuddered at the nickname.
"No. You'll have to kill me first, and I don't plan on dying anytime soon." Obi snarled.
Quickly he pulled you from his chest, before grabbing your hand and pulling you through the trees again.
The branches scratched and tore at you skin and clothes, your ribs and back ached, your eyes were red and puffy, but you hadn't felt this alive, this free, in forever.
Calming your breathing you listened as Guran crashed through the woods, yelling and cursing at you both.
Soon though, despite your high pain tolerance and stamina, the pain in your side became too much and you collapsed, your breathing becoming labored. You knew Guran was close, but you couldn't run anymore.
"Y/n what's wrong?" Obi whipped around as you collapsed.
When he saw you on the ground, your chest heaving, he panicked. Immediately he crouched down trying to look you over.
Looking into your eyes for permission he grabbed the hem of your top. You nodded with a wince and that was all he needed. Pulling your shirt up slightly he grimaced at the already purpling bruises.
"Y/n we have to keep moving. I'm sorry." He sighed before pulling you up and into his arms.
"This is gonna hurt." He warned before darting away again.
You moaned slightly in pain, wrapping your arms around his neck. Peering over his shoulder you saw a very angry Guran.
Obi must have noticed the male closing in because he ran faster, faster than you thought he could carrying you. The woods began to thin. You were closing in on the town.
"Y/n," you heard Obi speak, but you just tucked your face away into his neck. He nodded, his pace slowing down as he began to make turns into random alley ways.
"They should be around here..." He murmured and then you heard horse hooves.
"Obi! What were you- y/n?" You heard Zen, his voice going from irritation to concern.
"Master! Where is Shirayuki? Y/n, she's not doing to good." Obi's voice faltered at the end as his arms tightened around your legs and waist causing you to cry out quietly. He apologized softly.
"I'm right-" she stopped when she saw you in Obi's arms.
"Oh my god. Y/n!" She cried as she rushed over her hands fluttering over you not knowing where to start.
"You son of a bitch!" A familiar voice snarled behind you and you felt your heart squeeze.
Guran stood behind you, behind Obi, his katana held out with one hand, and the other holding his bleeding abdomen.
"I'm going to kill her. I'm going to torture her and I'm going to make you watch!" He snapped rushing at the group and you screamed as he slashed down.
Zen rushed forward throwing Shirayuki up onto his horse and Obi dodged the blade, his hold on you never loosening.
He wasn't going to give you up. He wasn't going to let you go again. Having you so close and almost losing you so quickly, put him into resignation. You were never leaving his side and he'd never leave yours again.
"Fucking hell. Just give me the bitch. She's broken. Useless." Guran growled his tone bored and tired.
"Like hell." Obi snarled, before handing you up to Mitsuhide.
"You want her? You'll have to take her from my cold, dead hands." Obi snapped pulling 3 kunai out.
Guran smiled. "That can be arranged."
You tried to stay awake. You tried so hard but everything hurt. Your head was pounding and you felt like you were on fire.
"Mitsu," you whimpered before the heat over took you. You fell limp in the man's arms causing him to freak out. Obi very nearly turned around to grab you and just run. He wouldn't though. Couldn't. He'd get rid of this bastard so that he never hurt you again.
"I'm going to kill you." Obi frowned as he said it, but he knew he meant it.
"I'd like to see you try. I taught you everything you know, boy." Guran snickered before rushing forward. The two danced around each other, stabbing and jerking at each other.
Obi would stab at him and Guran would jerk to the side before prodding at Obi. Obi didn't want to underestimate the man. Stabbed or not he was still an assassin. Still deadly.
"I'm going to incapacitate you. And then I'm going to kill each and every one of your friends, saving our little butterfly for last. Her? I'm going to kill her nice and slow. A stab here a slice there. I'm going to make her scream." Guran sneered, an attempt  to make Obi lash out at him.
"I'm going to kill you quickly. You'll have no mercy." Obi hissed.
His eyes were small slits, and his face held a prominent frown as he circled the bulky male, looking for an opening.
He found one when the man jumped towards Mitsuhide's horse. His mistake was turning his back to Obi. As he leapt at you and Mitsuhide, Kiki jumped in front of your horse and deflected the man's katana with a clang!
Obi appeared behind the man, one kunai at his throat and another through his back.
"Go to hell." Obi whispered in Guran's ear before slitting his throat.
Shirayuki hid her face in Zens back and Kiki nodded at Obi. Then Obi was at your side brushing your hair back and Mitsuhide offered to ride with Kiki.  Shirayuki rode with Zen allowing Obi to ride back with you held close to his chest. Zen sent some of his towns guard to deal with the body.
Later
"How is she?" Zen asked peering over at Obi who held you, clutching on to you like you'd disappear with the wind.
"I won't know for sure until we get back, Master. She hasn't opened her eyes yet." Obi glanced back down at you, your face was still red and looked troubled.
That look on your face hurt him, and in that moment he knew he'd never walk away from you again. He never thought about how leaving would affect you. He never gave himself the chance to think about it.
His grip on you tightened the more he thought about it. Leaning down he kissed your forehead. When you opened your eyes again he would make you a promise. A promise to never leave you ever again.
When you all arrived back to the castle, everyone fretted over you and Obi. You were still unconscious, still in Obi's arms, as they lead him to the infirmary.
Gurak took care of him while Ryuu and Shirayuki treated you. Ryuu looked ready to break, and Shirayuki had a look of concentration, determined to ease the pain.
Obi would've smiled at her determined face but he couldn't seem to find it. When you did wake up it was 4 hours later. Obi never left your side, holding your hand in his. He didn't leave, even when Zen ordered him to get something to eat or drink, or just anything that would distract him.
Shirayuki promised you'd be okay, but he just couldn't bring himself to leave. So when you did wake up he was right there with you.
Your first response to waking up was to promptly hit the first person you saw. Fight or Flight kicking in. That person was Obi. You swung and Obi caught your fist.
"Easy there, Tiger. You might hurt someone." He chided playfully, his eyes glinting softly.
"Obi." You all but whispered before leaping into his arms.
It hurt, hell it hurt, but being in his arms made you feel so much better. Knowing he didn't leave you, eased your heartache.
He held you securely, but not painfully. His face was tucked into your neck as he held you. Your arms were wound around his shoulders and you cried softly into his jacket.
He didn't let you go, not until you pulled away. Then he held your face, his eyes boring into yours. Your face flushed lightly and then he leaned forward. His lips barely touching yours, hovering. Closing your eyes you closed the gap. His lips were warm, and slightly wet. It made your stomach flip and your heart pound.
Kissing Obi. You were kissing Obi. You hands found their way to the back of his neck deepening the kiss. You would've kissed him forever but you pulled away before you could embarrass yourself.
"Never-" you started but jumped when he spoke at the same time.
"I love you." He whispered tucking your hair behind your ear.
Your eyes widened and you stared at him, unsure as to whether or not you were awake.
"Obi- I love you, too?" Your voice was higher than normal in shock. He let out a sigh of relief before holding your hands in his.
"Thank god. You were saying?" He asked as he played with your fingers. It took you a minute but you realized what he meant and reiterated.
"I was saying 'never leave me again' but I think you got that covered." You laughed leaning forward to kiss his forehead.
     "Never." He agreed nodding.
You let out a sigh of relief but yelped when the door slammed open and Ryuu and Shirayuki ran in and globbed you.
Gurak laughed as you were mauled and you playfully glared at her, wrapping your arms around both of your friends.
    "I'm okay." You promised them.
When they finally pulled away Shirayuki checked you over and confirmed that, while you'd be sore, you were indeed fine.
Obi held your hand the entire time and that calmed you. When she was done they'd all taken turns explaining what happened while you were unconscious and telling you about the treatment you'd needed and received.
Obi purposefully left out the unaliving of Guran. He did tell you that he wouldn't bother you anymore though, but that was it.
You nodded listening intently. When they finished you smiled at them, thanking them and then turned to kiss Obi on the cheek.
"I may not have a prince charming like our little red here, but I do have my own knight." You snickered and you saw Ryuu smile slightly. Obi chuckled kissing your forehead.
Smiling at your newfound friends you winked at them. You'd scored the runaway assassin.

I’m 25 going on 26 now, and I grew up loving the classic Powerpuff Girls cartoon series when I was a kid. Even now when I rewatch it as an adult, it’s still a cute and funny cartoon, especially now that I’m old enough to recognize all of the adult jokes. Like, there’s no way it was a coincidence that Professor Utonium’s despicably dishonest, greedy, lazy, manipulative, selfish, and sleazy former roommate from college was given the name Professor Dick Hardly by accident.
Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup actually are pretty relatable little girls who have believable flaws and insecurities. They make believable bad choices for little girls. Those issues actually get dealt with seriously, rather than just being brushed aside as no big deal with no negative consequences. They are still endearing and sympathetic in spite of their flaws.
While he had a few OOC moments of bad parenting in some bad episodes here and there, generally speaking, Professor Utonium from the classic Powerpuff Girls is actually one of the best dads in cartoons that I’ve ever seen, which is sadly pretty rare in most cartoon sitcoms, even the ones that are actually aimed at a children audience.
Most cartoon dads are abusive, lazy, neglectful, selfish, and stupid oafs. Granted, those type of dads in cartoon sitcoms can actually be entertaining and funny to watch when they are actually being well-written as shitty and slow-witted, but still essentially well-meaning people in regards to their families, such as S1-S8 Homer Simpson from The Simpsons and even S1-S3 Peter Griffin from Family Guy. However, the entertainment quality of those shitty, but well-meaning cartoon dads was mostly lost when the writers flanderdized their negative traits to the point of making Homer and especially Peter downright despicable with little to no redeeming or sympathetic qualities much of the time anymore. They went from being shitty, but essentially well-meaning parents and husbands to downright bratty and spoiled man-children who were much more intentionally abusive, childish, cruel, neglectful, petty, and selfish in regards to their families and others around them with little to no sympathetic or redeeming qualities much of the time anymore, and that’s one of the biggest reasons why The Simpsons went downhill in quality after S8, and why Family Guy went downhill in quality after S3.
Nonetheless, even as they were originally written on their shows pre-flanderdization when they were still well-meaning, but misguided parents and spouses, cartoon dads like Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin, weren’t good dads on the whole. There were still plenty of recurring plot lines and/or gags of them being abusive, lazy, neglectful, reckless, and selfish. Back in early seasons pre-flanderdization, it was more forgivable, though, because they also still had their fair share of kind and selfless moments with their families, and their shittiness as parents wasn’t intentionally abusive, malicious, premeditated, and selfish in nature, which balanced them out enough to still be entertaining and likable characters in spite of their flaws.
Realistically speaking, though, dads like Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson would be better off having their kids taken away from them by CPS. Their good qualities and lack of malicious intent, particularly in earlier seasons pre-flanderdization, would still not hold up as legitimate excuse as to why they should be allowed to keep their kids. Bart would have bruises all over his neck, fractures in his neck, and he could possibly be killed if Homer strangled him hard enough to actually break his neck and/or cut off his air supply long enough in real life just once. Meg, Chris, and even Stewie would not only be injured, but actually outright killed in real life from some of the abuse and neglect that Peter and Lois put them through in later seasons of FG. All of these kids, especially Meg, would have serious self-esteem issues for the rest of their lives because Peter, Lois’, and Homer’s abuse and neglect of their kids went beyond just a pattern of being physical in nature, but emotionally and verbally abusive as well.
So yeah, Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson are really not good fathers who you’d ever want to deal with for a parent in real life, even pre-flanderdization. The major reoccurrence of the abusive, bumbling, idiotic, lazy, drunken, neglectful, and selfish dad trope in cartoon sitcoms is exactly why I really love Professor Utonium from the classic PPG cartoon. I don’t necessarily mind it in absurdist cartoon sitcoms when it’s done well as a trope, but I’m also getting tired of mostly just seeing bad and stupid dads in cartoon sitcoms, and not enough good ones.
For the most part, the OG Professor Utonium is a great dad who goes above and beyond to make sure Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are happy, healthy, disciplined, and safe. He’s usually the parent most of us wish we could have in real life, if we don’t already. It’s refreshing to actually see a good dad in an animated sitcom for once.
Professor Utonium in the classic PPG cartoon is generally a very kind, loving, selfless, and supportive dad to girls. However, he also knows when he has to discipline them and be strict without ever being mean about it. He gives them good advice. He’s very selfless, and even though the girls are superheroes with superhuman abilities, he’ll still risk and/or sacrifice anything to protect them when they’re unable to protect themselves with their powers, including his own life. He didn’t need to be the stereotypical cartoon sitcom abusive, bumbling, dumb, and neglectful dad in order to be funny either. He was funny because he could sometimes be overprotective of the girls, and he could sometimes embarrass them by calling them sickly sweet terms of endearment and telling embarrassing stories that he shouldn’t have about them in public. He was socially awkward. These are relatable flaws in parents that even the best ones have.
While the girls don’t have a mother, Ms. Bellum and Ms. Keane were very brave, kind, and intelligent strong women who were good role models.
Also, the Professor did many activities with the girls and chores around the house that get gender-coded as “mother’s work.” Some of these things include begrudgingly playing dress up as Bubbles to make her happy when she was playing PowerPuff Girls with Buttercup and Blossom on a rainy day inside of no crime when he saw that she was upset that no one wanted to be her, cooking, cleaning, and actually sitting down to talk with the girls, listen to them, emotionally support them, and give them advice. He’s also not afraid to be openly affectionate, doting, and emotional with the girls. There’s just not enough good dads in cartoon sitcoms, which is why I really like Professor Utonium from the OG PowerPuff Girls cartoon and movie. He mostly defied all the bad dad stereotypes, and was a really great one to the girls more often than not.
The main villains from the classic PowerPuff Girls cartoon are incredibly entertaining, especially MoJo JoJo. Him was always the creepiest to me because he was the most devious, insidious, and manipulative one. All of the psychological abuse and manipulation he put the girls and Townsville through was always the scariest to me when I was a kid because out of all the villains on the show, the torment that he wreaked upon the girls and Townsville by brainwashing them, gaslighting them, and/or exploiting their fears and insecurities often was played as dead serious with really scary results, especially in early seasons of classic PPG. While Him had a few human moments here and there, for the most part, he was pretty consistently played off as being seriously scary and dangerous.
MoJo JoJo was an egomaniacal asshole hellbent on destroying the PowerPuff Girls and world domination, and on a few occasions, he actually came close to succeeding. On a few occasions, he genuinely was more scary than camp evil. But he still had a lot of humorous, human, fallible, and relatable moments, too. My favorite MoJo moments are the ones where he is making jokes, irritably going grocery shopping to get eggs, getting too frustrated by the girls antics and childish behaviors and reactions to actually go through with his plans to destroy them at certain points, and getting angry and jealous enough to actually destroy the alien/robot invader from another planet who was destroying Townsville in all the evil ways that he always wanted to himself. He was highly intelligent at coming up with clever schemes and inventions with all his science and technology to take over the world, destroy Townsville, and/or destroy the PowerPuff Girls. However, his arrogance, impatience, and impulsivity always doomed him to fail to succeed in the end, though he did come pretty close on a few occasions, especially in the 2002 prequel origin story movie, and he did actually get to rule the world in “The PowerPuff Girls Rule the World!” Surprisingly, he actually was a kindhearted ruler who did good things, but then he gave it all up and went back to being evil because he got bored.
Originally, MoJo was a well-intentioned extremist who wanted to create a utopia ruled by primates where they would never be controlled or rejected by humans again. As much as Professor Utonium’s irritation with JoJo for being a destructive chimp lab assistant was completely justified, it’s also hard not to feel kind of sorry for Mojo Jojo and understand where he’s coming from in his motivations to become evil, particularly in the 2002 prequel movie because originally all he really wanted was to be loved by his owner, too. He understandably felt rejected when Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup became the center of his universe instead. Of course, that doesn’t excuse him for choosing to respond to the Professor’s rejection by becoming an arrogant, evil, cruel, hateful, hypocritical, domineering, manipulative, petty, selfish, and vengeful villain going on a quest for world domination, attempting to commit homicide several times, probably committing voluntary manslaughter of citizens several times that we didn’t see on screen when destroying Townsville all those times, turning the rest of the world into dogs to try to take over the world, and trying to destroy the girls. However, you understand why Mojo became the villain he did with his backstory. He’s relatable. Occasionally, he does have some genuinely sympathetic moments where he’s actually willing to be friendly with the girls, team up with them, and do the right thing.
HIM was just the personification of evil for no other reason than the fact that he was satan. While MoJo was a complex, human, and relatable anti-villain with his origin story as the Professor’s lab chimp, who gained genius-level human intellect from having Chemical X splashed on his brain, and then chose to become evil after feeling rejected by the Professor when he saw how he pretty much forget about him once the girls became the center of his universe instead, HIM was evil, manipulative, and hateful for no other reason than the fact that those traits were a part of his nature as the very embodiment of evil. Many times, a fictional villain being portrayed as one-dimensional with no sympathetic qualities or relatable motivations will annoy me, but with HIM being evil just because that’s who he is, it actually works because he is literally Satan. There doesn’t need to be a deeper sympathetic story behind why he is evil. Committing crimes, wreaking havoc, corrupting people, manipulating people, turning people against others, exploiting the fears of others, and deceiving others for his own amusement is just who he is, and in the early seasons of classic PPG in particular, that made him really scary to me when I was a six year old little girl watching the cartoon on TV.
You get the idea...The classic PowerPuff Girls was a fantastic cartoon, particularly the first four seasons. Granted, there was some series seasonal rot going on in the writing in S5 and S6 after the 2002 prequel movie, and Craig Mcracken and Gennedy Tartakovsky’s departure from the crew. Like, the characterizations of the characters and/or storylines in S5 and S6 felt comparably flanderdized, ooc, immature, inconsistent, pointless, shallow, and underwhelming at certain times to fit the plot, such as in the episodes “Keen on Keane,” “Pee Pee G’s,” “Seed No Evil,” “Reeking Havoc,” “Toast of the Town,” “Say Uncle,” “City of Clipsville,” “”Bubble Boy,” A Made Up Story,” “Mo’linguish,” and “Simian Says.” Even the good episodes of S5-S6 still didn’t ever reach the same level of greatness of the ones from S1-S4. However, the seasonal rot in the classic PPG cartoon of S5-S6 after Craig McCracken and Gennedy Tartakovsky’s departure still wasn’t nearly as bad as the seasonal rot on The Simpsons after S8, Family Guy after S3, and SpongeBob SquarePants post S3–S4 ish, so I’m still willing to consider most of S5-S6 of classic PPG legit canon.
However, it sounds like the 2016 PPG reboot fucked up everything that was originally good about it to go for a more slapstick comedic feel without substance without consistency, depth, and intelligence. Now, I hear that the CW is making a live-action TV show spin-off of the PowerPuff Girls being jaded and resentful young women who’ve given up crime fighting as result! No, no, no! Why? Why does the CW keep making dark, nitty, and gritty live action teen soap operas out of beloved childhood cartoons?
Yeah, the original PowerPuff Girls cartoon and movie had dark moments. The girls could be bratty and make bad choices sometimes. However, it was still very much a fun show about normal little girls born with superpowers, which they chose to use to defend their father, their city, and on some occasions, the whole world, from crime. No one ultimately forced them to be superheroes for everyone in the classic PPG cartoon and movie. They chose to do it because they had brave and selfless hearts. There was ultimately no obligation for them to be superheroes in the classic PPG cartoon and movie. Sure, they got tired of fighting crime at times, but they still ultimately enjoyed doing it when push came to shove. They weren’t weighed down by the darkness of the world, hatred, and resentment. They still were relatively normal little girls with happy, peaceful, and normal lives of little girls whenever they weren’t fighting crime after the events of the prequel movie about their origins. That’s what made the PowerPuff Girls classic cartoon so special.
By turning Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup into jaded young women, who have given up on being superheroes because they’ve grown resentful of “losing the normal childhood to crime fighting” that they basically are shown to have in the original series for the most part in their spare time aside from having superpowers that they chose to use to fight crime to defend their dad and Townsville from, anyway, where is the fun in that?

Since the hiatus is over, I'm gonna rant a bit about Stand Still, Stay Silent and how the author's take on her new religious views are impacting things.
So if you don't read that webcomic, sorry for this. I'll put it under a read more if it gets long (which it probably will).
So first of all, I'll clarify that these are my views and I know this is a HEATED thing rn and I'll basically just say I'll be willing to like... debate about it with anyone who wants to but I also personally reserve the right to turn off anon/block you if you get nasty with me or if it sounds like you aren't actually interested in hearing what I'm saying so much as spreading your own beliefs around.
Secondly, I want people to understand that I personally am American. I am speaking from an American perspective. I understand that Minna is not American. I may be conflating our experiences in a way they cannot be. However, I also recognize that author intent and audience interpretation are two very different things. With this in mind, I also recognize and understand that intent is nothing when compared to impact. So though I may be speaking from an experience that may not be true at all for Minna, I also recognize that my feelings and perspectives are valid as an American audience member. Something being written by a Finn does not negate the fact that it is available to read regardless of geographic location, and that it's impact will ultimately reach further than just her own bubble. So this post is me speaking about impact on myself as an American audience member, not intent on her part.
First I'll say that the bunny comic - Lovely People - is, in my opinion, objectively in poor quality and taste. Not even taking into account my own views on religion yet. It was very tone deaf about the history of Christianity and oppression and completely ignored how Western Christianity plays a major part in a lot of modern oppression and social problems that the comic tries to address. The pseudo-apocalyptic theme of the social credit system had the potential to be a very interesting and thought provoking direction! Social media has fucked with our society and our mental health in a way that we really need to address!
However, the comic made the Christians the only group we see experiencing oppression from this system in the story. This effectively does two things in tandem. One, it fails to address just how negative of an impact the social credit system would have on us all. Looking around at our way of interacting with the world now, we're still almost all of us suffering for the way things are. We have incredibly high social anxiety, people are encouraged from a young age to conform aggressively to beauty standards and share all their personal details online, and - most notably to my next argument - anywhere an individual lacks privilege is exploited by our society and they are put under a microscope, and are ultimately aggressively punished for being part of a marginalized group. Not born with the physical traits considered acceptable by Western standards of beauty? Tough luck. Not physically or mentally able to participate in the current system in place? Tough luck. Not willing to conform to strict gender roles? Identify as a marginalized gender or sexuality? Not willing to be quiet and secretive about it? Tough fucking luck. But the ONLY group that is shown to be oppressed at ALL in the bunny comic is Christians.
What makes this even more tone deaf is that, Two, it is thus completely blind to how Western Christianity has played a direct and aggressive role in supporting the oppression of these other group in our current fucked up system. I'm NOT saying Christianity is evil or that anyone who practices the faith is bad. Not at all. Religion is, at it's core, a beautiful thing. But the fact stands that MANY people in positions of power have used their Christian beliefs as a tool to oppress others. In America especially (yes I'm speaking as an American and I acknowledge that) Christianity is THE mask used by the far-right and the oppressors to spread their ideologies. Even white supremicists and nationalists ultimately will try to argue that white people and the US are God's Chosen Ones which is why they're TOTALLY RIGHT in doing the terribly things they do.
Making a comic about how a social credit system causes oppression and then showing that oppression as EXCLUSIVELY happening to Christians is not only in EXTREMELY poor taste, it is directly harmful. It is the same message and behavior that a lot of Christians use constantly to gaslight marginalized groups that they are against. "Oh I'm oppressing you? No actually I'M oppressed because I'M CHRISTIAN and you just can't handle the fact that you're going to hell for not repenting for existing!"
Even if those are your true beliefs. Even if you genuinely think that Christians are oppressed and that anyone arguing against you is refusing to repent. Does spreading information in that way really seem effective to you? Does it really seem loving and caring to you? To sit there and talk about how others are always hurting you, but you aren't hurting anyone else at all by telling them they're going to hell for being?
I'm digressing. But my point here is that the comic is in incredibly poor taste, and I genuinely will never understand why people expect non-Christians to take the message of "you're going to hell if you don't conform to my beliefs and also I'm oppressed" positively.
Moving on to Stand Still, Stay Silent...
She has said several times that she does not intend to change the path SSSS has been on from the beginning. This is honestly not comforting whatsoever.
First, this is definitely because - even before the recent developments - SSSS was always very shallow imo. I loved it! Don't get me wrong! But a major part of that love was because I genuinely thought it was building up to something bigger; I thought it was eventually going to go deeper. I now understand that that was never the case. It's a shallow story with a lot of potential that I don't think was ever going to get fully explored.
Now here's the thing. Part of me is really upset about that. What I thought the story was going to be I now see will never happen. But a bigger part of me is frankly happy about that now. Because, like I said up top, intent and impact are very different. If she were to suddenly go unexpectedly deeper than the story has been, I wouldn't trust that there wouldn't be shitty subtext and more of the same tone-deafness as the bunny comic. Whether intentional or not.
And even if she hadn't recently converted to Christianity. The fact that she is someone who is susceptible to these ideas and values tells me what kind of a person she really is anyway, regardless of religious identity. Which, frankly, would mean the subtext would still be shitty. I don't trust it. I don't trust her.
So frankly, people have every right to be suspicious of how SSSS may be impacted going forward. She can say that it won't be all she wants. But either the story will go deeper - like I had always hoped it would - and there would inevitably be an inseparable link between her values and beliefs and the themes of the story, OR the story will never go deeper at all which would mean imo that it would ultimately fall flat as a story.
People are allowed to be disappointed by this. People are allowed to be suspect of how she may potential work harmful themes into the comic going forward - whether intentionally or not. I'm allowed to be wary of this, especially as someone who has had VERY bad experiences with Christians who have tried to tell me the same things she made clear in her bunny comic.
