STUDY IN LOKI ROMANCE
Part 6: Conclusion
Tumblr media
Since we're only a few days away from the last episode, I decided to COUNT DOWN everything we´ve got so far ( that can be interpreted very easily as romantic ) and discuss what the actual fuck is going on with second season. Because even though I shipped lokius practically from S1E2, I absolutely did NOT expect this kind of development. (Not that I´m complaining)
Warning: This is gonna be LONG post, lots of screenshots, lots of SPOILERS, lot of "oh-my-god-they-so-cute" language, and little bit of meta.
I originally thought that this post would be everything at once, but since I have just too many screenshots this time around, I´ll have to split it. so every post will be one episode. Color coding means:
IIIIIIIIII = anything, that coud potentialy be just acting choice.
IIIIIIIIII = everything else (tzn.: whatever was written, and/or carefully prepared by filmmakers. )
side note: I already wrote, about how amazing it is, that Mobius is unable to fight but fights anyway and how beautifuly, and ridiculously brave he is HERE. But this is about Loki/Mobius interactions, so I´ll try my best not to talk about THAT. (Even when I´m really happy, that s2 continues with this formula and Mobius is still his completely defenseless while aggressively brave self. I love him, btw.) Here is count down for every episode:
EPISODE 1 HERE
EPISODE 2 HERE
EPISODE 3 HERE
EPISODE 4 HERE
EPISODE 5 HERE
Sooooo 51 lokius moments, that were completely and utterly unexpected, but yet here they are. Why? Let´s start with over look at what we´ve actualy got: Things that could technically be just acting choices and Tom´s and Owen´s chemistry together:
unexpected exhibition of touches
Distressed God and his Happy Face (at O. B. office)
Loki finding Mobius´s joke amusing
Loki´s head tilt and smile at Mobius (in pie scene)
"They say opposites attract. NO."
Another exhibition of touches (ep 3)
"let´s be as close as we physically can" challange (at Timley´s spech)
Loki glow up (Loki fixing himself for Mobius/Don)
Loki being very nervous and stuttering while talking to Mobius/Don.
Loki gently helping Mobius/Don through the time door. Things that are deffinitely NOT just acting choices:
"Mobius It´s me!"
"Tell me, you recognize me!"
scene in in an elevator
Mobius and Loki talking to OB.
bickering, like married couple, part 1
"Mobius if I don´t make it back" and "You´ll make it back".
Mobius risking his life SKIN for loki and refusing to give up on him.
Loki saves Mobius in an epic fashion and they end up in a hug:
matching suits part 1
Loki defending /saving Mobius from Brad (with magic!)
Mobius and Loki struggling to assemble IKEA furniture- sorry Tapmad together
" And he knows..."
Loki being very concerned for Mobius after his outburst, saying that It´s okay, and then suggests having pie
Bickering like married couple (part 2)
The whole freaking pie scene!
Loki and Mobius: mischievous duo (Breaking Brad)
Loki, not following Sylvie (at the end of episode 2)
matching suits part 2
"And they lived happily ever after..." circle transition
Loki and Mobius enjoying popcorn:
Also... Bickering like married couple (part 3)
"You know sometimes I forget, that you are one of them... Blows my mind!"
Mobius supporting Loki in using magic...
Victor/Ravonna - the most transparent mirror ever:
THE TANDEM BIKE
Loki going with Mobius, not even thinking about it anymore.
changing clothes together
Bickering like married couple (part 4)
The "misunderstanding trope"
Pie scene number two
Shot with only two of them, right before the end of ep4
Loki looking for Mobius in PIE ROOM
Loki Time slipping to the theater room
Mobius/Don casually informing Loki, he´s a SINGLE dad and telling him his entire work schedule
Loki time slipping to Mobius again (right when he started to be hopefull and Happy, that O. B. will be able to help him.
Mobius/Don dropping everything and forgeting about his two mischievous sons so he can give Loki full attention
Wanna buy my wife´s jetski?
"A beautiful union of form and function"
"You saved my life, when I first arrived. You saw something in me, that I hadn´t seen in myself."
"I want my friends back. I don´t want to be alone."
"It was more about what I wanted."
"It´s not about where, when or why. It´s about WHO."
So... let´s scrap the theory, that romantic tention is created only by chemistry between actors (though it IS amazing and also key ingredient) and their acting choices. Because so far, screenplay, and cinematography was supporting their story as well. I feel, like I should clarify, that I do not expect Lokius kiss, or blatant confirmation to happen. I was here during Johnlock debacle. And I was here, when Destiel ended... the way it ended. And I refuse to put in creators (especially when it comes to marvel/disney) any hope, that I know can be crushed so very easily. I´m not doing this shit again. If it happens? WOW! I´m gonna be surprised. very pleasantly surprised. I will litteraly never shut up about it
But I do not expect it. Not even now, when I saw, what are creators of Loki able to put out in the world. Like this for example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or this, very brutal death scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yeah, I am avare, Loki officialy CAN have male love interest, because it was confirmed in a text, that he´s a bi.
Also there was this (very misleading) article few years ago:
Tumblr media
Still. I can´t bring myself to hope for anything explicit. But I absolutely understand anyone, who have that hope. And I know, how great feeling it is, while it lasts. Anyway. I´m gonna look at all possible options, I can think of. Even some, I feel, are more possible then others. And maybe answer is not just one. It could be more things at once.
Explanation number one: Creators took notes on how season 1 was received. And they saw, that Mobius is very popular, well-liked character, his interactions with Loki were favorite moments according to majority of an audience, and decided to lean more into that, for viewer´s sake.
Same with sylvie. Once they saw her romantic relationship with Loki isn´t that popular, they decided to give her her own agency, own story instead.
Explanation number two: They genuinely think, they are showing deep friendship between two bros and nothing more. I mean... Loki getting close circle of friends and wanting to stay with them is a one of the bigest themes this season. They are trying to make a point about Loki changing bacause of them (and probably making sacrifice for them) But there is still very intentional difference between his relationship with Mobius and everybody else. Mobius is obviously the most important one of the bunch.
Tumblr media
Explanation number three:
Creators want romantic scene with Sylvie and Loki to be big surprise at the end, so they tried to show as much problems and conflicts between them, as they could and limited their screentime together.
But I personaly think, this would be stupid for many reasons:
Making Mobius and Loki focus this season caused people to rooth for them, and be invested in their relationship more.
They showed multiple times, that Sylvie wants from life very different things, then Loki and their philosophical views differ greatly.
It doesn´t look like creators put enough effort into building up this kind of ending to be satisfying. It would just feel like they´re trying to surprise / shock audience. Explanation number four: They think that what they are doing with Mobius and Loki is father/son dynamic. (I´m sorry, but this would be just hilarious. If this is the case, I would love to know, what they were thinking, when they decided to leave Owen´s line: "You´re just a little pussycat" in there. Or when they look at all those acting choices and said YES, THANK YOU. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Explanation number five: They´re queerbaiting the hell out of us. And their master plan is to make us all watch and having hope and then they will throw in the finale some last minute no homo explanation and wil laugh in our faces.
(I suppose I don't have to say how much I like this option *sarcasm*)
Explanation number six:
Creators would like to make Lokius canon, but they are restricted / they´re not allowed to. So they decided to go as far, as they can. To give us little (big) nods, to give us those beutiful scenes. To double down on everything lokius related. And they know what they can get away with before casual viewers notice that there is something gay happening. (I mean... it looks like they can get away with anything but kiss at this point :D Like seriously. I saw people talking about how beautiful Dean and Castiel´s friendship was EVEN after finale, so...)
Tumblr media
Explanation number seven:
They are doing Love triangle thing, where they will try ultimitely "please everyone" by giving us some scene that could be potentialy seen as romantic between Loki and Sylvie AND between Loki and Mobius (while leaving it for interpretation) In Czech republic, we call it: "when the wolf ate well, but goat is still alive."
Tumblr media
Explanation number eight: They ARE able to make Lokius canon, but they actually like podtext more, then posibility to make it transparent, and that is just the way, they want to tell this story.
Tumblr media
Explanation number nine: They were planning to make Lokius a thing (if not from the start, then after season one) and they made whole season this way, so more people would rooth for them. And it will end with some form of confirmation of their love story. ( as I mentioned above, I can´t see this happening, but that is my bad experience talking. If it happens, I deffinitely won´t be mad about being wrong here, I can promise you that :D )
_______
I gues we will know more about their intent after episode 6. Right now, I´m actually just hoping, that story will stay consistent as much as it can. And characters won´t die. On the contrary I hope, they will end up happy, because they did earn it. I have to say, that I enjoyed this season even more then the first. And I really do hope, that finale wont make me change my mind. Regardles of intention, this show is high quality and it is obvious how much care was poured into every aspect of this season from effects, cinematography, costums, sets, music, acting... I think, that this show is a best thing marvel did in a long, LONG time.
Also please, pleaseeee let this season end at the place, where it will be possible to see Loki and Mobius in other MCU project (I would honestly watch anything, where they appear together)
Tumblr media
And lastly: If it doesn´t end the way you wanted, please please don´t let anger to rule your actions. Do criticize as much as you want, but please don´t harrass anybody. At the end of the day, creators of this show are also just people. Don´t say anything, you wouldn´t say into their faces. If it will end badly, watch your favourite, comfort gay show, celebrate how much Lokius fix-it fanfiction we´ll have! And how much art already exists because of those first five episodes.
Or take that frustration and turn it to motivation: maybe you can create something better!
I was there in 2017.
Please just don´t let TV show ruin your whole year and your creativity.
for people who got here and read it all: I really appreciate it! Thank you! 💚
PS: Sorry for my english and all the grammer mistakes I´m aware it´s not ideal 😅

My Read of Puhoy! :)
Tumblr media
Hey pizza babies! Puhoy is an often praised Adventure Time episode, and I've seen a few analysis videos on it, but I've never really felt satisfied by any of them, so I wanted to put my own thoughts on the episode in writing somewhere. After all, the episode turned 10 just two days ago!
So, right away, I think this episode is about Finn letting go of the simplistic understanding of the world he had as a younger kid throughout the first few seasons. In the early episodes, Finn has an extremely black and white perspective. Stealing is always bad, everyone's problems can always be solved, and good and evil are clearly delineated categories
Tumblr media
Puhoy opens with an establishing shot showing a knife storm raging outside the tree fort. This calls back to "Rainy Day Daydream," an episode where Jake's imagination becomes reality. Puhoy also plays with the line between imagination and reality, and, while this post isn't about trying to explain the pillow world lore-wise, I think the knife storm's appearance suggests that the pillow world was created by Finn's imagination, which is very thematically in line with the rest of my read on Puhoy
Finn starts the episode in a funk because he's convinced Flame Princess doesn't like him anymore, just because she didn't laugh at one of his jokes. I think this conflict illustrates that Finn doesn't know how to separate his feelings from reality. He imagines FP doesn't like him, and he's unable to conceptualize anything else. In the simple, ideal world in Finn's young mind, she would have laughed if she liked him. There isn't room for the nuance that maybe she just didn't get it
Jake is able to see that Finn is completely making up this problem, but his solution of ignoring his feelings, demonstrated by hurling his favorite cup out the window, is pretty unhelpful. In the end, even Jake can't let go that easily, and he fishes his cup back up
Tumblr media
Fortunately, instead of trying to hurl his feelings out the window, Finn decides to crawl into the pillow fort to let his thoughts "fester," and Jake perfectly illustrates the difference between their approaches by telling Finn that festering is always bad. Jake wants to move on from things immediately, without having a moment to sit with or say goodbye to his feelings
Tumblr media
The pillow world Finn ends up in reflects the simplistic worldview he needs to let go of. It represents the fantasy that he, until now, thought his life would play out like. He easily slays a pillow dragon, immediately wins the adoration of the pillow people, and wastes basically no time hitting it off with a pillow girl. Years pass and we see a strapping, idealized older Finn living a simple, cushy life providing for his pillow nuclear family
Tumblr media
There's no horror to Puhoy. No dark turn, no sudden twist. Finn gets to live an entire, comfortable, satisfying lifetime in his idealized fantasy world, right up until he simply dies of old age, at which point he finally "wakes up" and finds himself back home
Puhoy feels, to me, like a twist on a common trope in fiction. Typically, like the island of the lotus eaters in the Odyssey, a world as cushy and idealized as the pillow world is presented as a trap of some kind, and the "right" choice is to resist the temptation. These stories usually suggest that there's something wrong with choosing a simple life, like it's ultimately unfulfilling or hollow in some way. But Puhoy doesn't moralize about Finn's life in the pillow world. He comes off as certain the entire time that he does want to find a way to go home, but as the years pass and he forgets what home even looked like, he ends up making the choice to stay, and it comes off to me as entirely reasonable. He has an entire life here, meanwhile he can't even remember what Jake looks like. Why should he throw all this away to return to the people from his past?
Tumblr media
Puhoy is the ultimate wish fulfillment. It can be hard to let go of what the world looked like when you saw it through the eyes of a child. It can be hard to accept the complexities and terrors of the world. It can be hard to even understand why you would want to see the world as a difficult, uncertain, complicated place. If I were once again Finn's age and you'd asked me if I wanted to live out an entire, satisfying lifetime in the world I thought I lived in as a kid, I would be extremely tempted to say yes. Only then might I be able to move on with my real life without eternally mourning the honey-dipped worldview I was forced to outgrow, finally satisfied that I'd gotten to have my time with it
Once Finn winds up back home in his own time, he almost immediately forgets his life in the pillow world. Unlike Jake's cup, after living a full life there, it's truly gone and he truly doesn't care about it anymore, and so he's able to forget it entirely
FP calls Finn to tell him she finally understood his joke, which is a surprisingly convenient, external solution to Finn's internal problem, but he nonetheless comes off as if it never tore him up in the first place, as if, by leaving his simplistic perspective behind, he was able to develop a more mature perspective on his relationships with others
Thanks for reading!! :)))
I have an unspoken rule on this blog that it's strictly for the funny and only occasional self promotion, but I really wanted to write about this episode. Usually I write more analytical stuff like this on my devblog, but cartoons isn't video games! If I keep wanting to write stuff like this, maybe I'll make a sideblog to put that stuff in 🤔
By the way, I think of Puhoy as part of a trilogy with Dungeon Train and Hall of Egress. They're all important journeys along Finn's larger journey of growing up, and they're all framed by Finn trying to deal with rough feelings surrounding FP. The latter two are more overtly connected to each other, but Hall of Egress does have what I think is meant as a reference to Puhoy, where Finn emerges from the Hall by poking his head through the dirt on top of the hill it's under, the same way he emerges from the pillow fort at the end of Puhoy! Maybe one day I'll write about those episodes too. I have a lot to say about Finn's arc throughout the show in general, so I could even do a post about that :)

There are some fantastic arguments as to why Izzy won't be the one dying in episode 8, ranging from the fandom backlash, all the way up to some fantastic character and scene analysis. There are some fantastic posts about it happening too – don’t want to diminish that, despite how it makes my heart hurt and my brain very sad.
The key thing to remember is that we still don't really know much about episode 8, other than from a few of the shots we’ve seen from BTS and from the teaser (which I wager, only really shows the first 15 mins or so, if that). I've tried to piece the scenes together into a somewhat cohesive storyline, trying to work out how the crew escapes and why they go back, and how they end up with Ricky (in naval costume), where they're going with him etc and when the funeral scene we’ve seen slots into the episode. It’s so hard, and there may be a multitude of reasons as to why Izzy isn’t in that shot, from a) he is captured still b) he is unable to make it due to the state he's in c) he's lying on a beach somewhere drinking mimosas (which is the headcannon I have)
DJ has said that the season will end on a satisfying note, well enough to be satisfied with if HBO don’t give a 3rd season, which also suggests that maybe Izzy won’t die, or it won’t be left on a 'is he dead?' cliffhanger as that would be as unsatisfying as it comes. He has also said that the opening scene will be incredibly satisfying as well, which may counterargue the above point, but I'm not sure Izzy dying would make that any more satisfying?
Now we've all seen the review that came out, saying that the crew suffers a devastating loss and this gives the 'dying' corner a potential point, but people have also made some real good points about it being the Revenge or someone else entirely.
From my perspective (which has nothing to do with anything really) is that this entire Izzy-dying situation just seems a bit too forced/heavy handed for me - its foreshadowed heavily in the first three episodes (Christ, we think he's dead like 3 times?) and I find it so very hard to believe that they would let a KEY spoiler scene be leaked in their promo footage? I honestly think that all the info we have gotten so far has been fed to us in this way on purpose, so we build it up in our heads, DJ and co know we would analyse everything and by god we have so far, so much - maybe it is all a giant red herring? Maybe someone does die, but it’s a complete 180 from who we think it is?
I dunno, but if he does die I'll be disappointed, not just because I like him, and what that means for him as a character, but because we were able to figure it out mostly from promotional shots and one would think that something as heavy and as big as Izzy’s death would be, would be the furthest thing they'd want to put in there.
I dunno, as we get closer to Thursday, I just have to keep remembering that it will all actually be okay and DJ and co know what they are doing.

hm. plenty of people more clever than me have already fleshed out why the claire plotline, despite feeling kinda lacking (in terms of it feeling like a very dramatic change from the carmen “near set his apartment and workplace on fire, panic attack in office, bitter and grieving in the way that suicide deaths specifically make people” berzatto we got of season 1) was still in a ways relevant to carmy’s character, but taking my own go at it. it’s interesting how claire is a direct answer to richie’s question in ep 1: “if this isn’t fun for you [carmy], what is?”. carmy’s response to that looking it up (or trying to find out), and in that same episode he stumbles back into claire who i think in many ways represents his past/old good times (note that the biggest flashback we see is revealed to be carmy telling the story to claire, that claire is evidently close enough to the family to know the faks and call richie cousin, carmy and claire having their respective school crushes on each other) and she ends up conflicting with carmy being able to be a chef, notable not because CLAIRE is asking for all of carmy’s time, but rather because carmy is unable to do anything in parts, and is, if not fully pointed towards the thing he loves (even if it kills him), then fully pointed to what brings him joy (even if it sinks everything else). the season, and the time he spends with claire, is less satisfying then actually getting to see how fucked carmy is in the head, but i think it does paint an interesting contrast to s1 carmy who’s forgone fun entirely for his passion. s3’ll obviously be about tryna find a healthy balance between those and whether that’s possible for him at all, but i do find his whole locker speech interesting. he doesn’t “need” fun. it makes him duller. worse at the only thing he’s good at. what’s he even worth if he’s not good at cooking? and of course, the whole episode reinforcing that. they don’t need him. he does get in the way. sydney’s fears are turned back on him. he loses both what is fun and what is good. he’s fucked

Ah, Precure dance endings. A series staple. Whether you consider the First dance ED to be "You make me happy" or "Ganbalance de dance" or even the very first "Get You! Love Love?!" the point is they've been around for a while. Generally speaking nothing but a simple fun time, but rarely has had anything to do with the show proper. Nothing wrong with that of course, but the very first Precure ED was a bit more than that.
Futari wa, as opposed to every other season, only has the 1 ending. Sure, it changes visually halfway through to accommodate Pollun and the new villain team, but that's it. (Which is more than the OP which doesn't change at all, which is also unusual). But I think people often miss the relevance of the song in between all the less relevant eds, and the iconicness that is the OP.
But the ED is also iconic and a crucial piece of the Futari wa Purikyua experience.
Episode 45, the last episode before shit hits the fan, features this song heavily. This song isn't really my favorite ed, and the episode isn't a particular favorite of mine (Futari wa has so many good episodes), but it utilizes the ed effectively, and the song that you've been listening to all this time hits harder.
Nagisa immediately falls in love with the song. The song speaks to her looking at the lyrics of course its no surprise. But it's not just "song that Nagisa would like". Though I would be remiss if I did not mention the inclusion of sweets in the lyrics. Nagisa loves chocolate. It's the go to simple important part of life for her.
They have the girls sing it. Sung by a chorus, not just Nagisa and Honoka (but they do get solos), but the whole class, many of whom appear in the ED. Because of Futari wa's small main cast the side characters hold a more important role than they do in many future series, so these are characters we know, even if just from an episode. There's a weight to the music being diegetic.
Of course the episode ends sweetly, with Nagisa, Honoka, and the fairies, singing their heart out with the rest of their class. But for a moment that wasn't a guarantee. Nagisa and Honoka being unable to sing with their class highlights the toll that this fight has taken on their normal school lives. They have to fight against someone who fully intends to kill them, and then destroy their loved ones, alone while every one else is.
Made all the more poignant by the subject matter of the song.
First of all, the title "Get you! Love Love!" is in English, and a bit nonsensical in English. But "Love Love" in Japanese, means more "lovely-dovey". It's VERY much so in your face romantic. A word used to describe Mepple and Mipple. The song is about the joy of teenage romance. While I don't really want to call it frivolous, next to world saving it doesn't hold the same weight.
Now, I recognize that may seem counter to my point that the song is important to Futari wa. I mean there's no canon romantic relationship. Closest is Nagisa's crush that she never actually confesses to. But putting aside all of Futari wa's romance elements (which is an entirely different discussion), the lyrics are still very relevant to Futari wa.
The Opening holds the iconic line "even wearing school uniforms we're unbelievably tough" and features scenes of them fighting evil in their school uniforms. The opening is an ode to how badass they are in all aspects of their life.
But the ending is the other side of the coin. It tells us how frustrated they are with the villains encroaching on their everyday life. While I don't speak Japanese, and have seen it translated a couple of ways, the reoccurring "datte yatte ran'nai jan", is either "because you can't make me do this", or "because I can't do this". IDK which is right, but either way, this is in regards to fighting, stress, and trouble, which stands in stark contrast to the opening which is very much so about how much they can and do fight. "For the sake of the earth, for the sake of everyone That's fine but isn't there something that you're forgetting?! Now!" They aren't even being subtle about the Pretty Cure part about the girls lives in the song. How much that they don't want to do it. "My heart is pounding and throbbing like a dreaming teenager An original daily life is something I won't get rid of" The lines of Nagisa and Honoka's solo. The most thematically important lines in the whole song imo. While the importance of the everyday is important in most Precure seasons, it is especially emphasized with Futari wa. The main theme of the story is about how precious day to day things are, and how unfair it is for the girls to have to fight for that.
Because ultimately that is what Futari wa Pretty Cure is about more than anything. I think it's important to view Futari wa Pretty Cure through the lens of a slice of life first. It's tone a lot of the time, focusing on poor grades and unfinished homework, lacrosse, errands, sleepovers and family. A relatively grounded slice of life from the perspective of magical girls. The value of the normal events highlighted by the desperation Nagisa and Honoka have fighting to defend them. The ED highlights it by focusing on the more "frivolous" aspects of the girls lives.
The visuals of the ED are pretty simple, but effective. They showcase the different circles the girls interact with. Their families, their classmates, their clubs and of course the villains. Because of Futari wa's focus on their community, the presence of these characters in the ED is deserved. A fun lighthearted focus on their day to day lives to contrast the OP.
Also, I'd like to point out the ED visuals humanizing the villains. While Futari wa's villains are easily among some of the franchises worst, having the unforgivable flaw of being forgettable, the show doesn't do a completely terrible job of humanizing them. And the ED contributes to that. The dancing of the villains, just being the goofy people that some of them are when not, trying to destroy the world. While I wouldn't call the behavior canonical, it really isn't off base for characters like Gekidrago and Regine. The villains, for all that they are generic, are primarily motivated by their desire to continue existing: the same motivation that drives the Cures. (Gotta love their goofy dance).
Also a guy screams at the end of it. If I have to hear it now so do you.

withholding the final episode from us poor europeans for a full day was a crime, an exercise in frustration and a challenge in restraint (from looking up spoilers) but here we are. Soo. at long last, some thoughts.
1. that was A LOT. I’m gonna need days to process everything.
2. right off the bat, I just wanna say. it was a touch too sad for me, to the point that the excessive melodrama of it all made me unable to even shed a tear because it was all So Much.
3. I really think the main issue here is pacing more than anything, because if they had spaced out these THREE depressing ass storylines throughout the season, they would have been dealt with better, without crowding the wedding episode with so much sadness.
4. Rafael Silva is insane. for an actor on his FIRST acting gig, that’s some CRAZY acting. I am genuinely so impressed.
5. I think only 10 minutes of wedding content out of two hours at the end of a season that has been building up to it so much was maybe not quite enough to be fully satisfying, especially because we know they filmed so much more and everything got cut. but this is just my opinion obvs
6. BEING ALIVE. talking about something that couldn’t have worked better. LISTEN, never in a million years would have I thought to hear Being Alive on a fox procedural show and in this context???? whoever picked this song needs a raise. this entire scene was PERFECTION.
7. also loved the scene of tommy comforting andrea and speaking spanish to her. such a lovely heartfelt touch. now stop taking lone star ladies’ husbands away from them though. edit because I forgot: the second proposal!! another GREAT scene and I’m not somebody who generally likes people getting down on one knee to propose but the gesture was SO carlos that it worked perfectly
8. I wanted more dancing, the dancing looked so fun. and more honeymoon. but you can’t have everything I guess
9. idk like I said I need time to process but aside from everything else, one thing that this finale nails is the show of unwavering mutual love and faith in each other tk and carlos have for each other. and it’s nothing new but they truly are each other’s rock, each other’s miracle. and this episode couldn’t have showed it better.
10. just. PLEASE S5 GIVE THEM A FUCKING BREAK IM BEGGING. a fluffy storyline, a joy, a kitten, another lizard, I’ll take anything

only the option with the LEAST votes will be eliminated. propaganda under the cut (and more always welcome!):
akko kagari and andrew hanbridge:
Very typical hetero-love-interest introduction, rival vibes, aloof rich boy & headstrong "commoner" girl, learning to see each other's point of view, she dresses up for the first time in the series to sneak into his party to try to talk to him. Just classic 'ugh they're clearly gonna get together' but... they don't. Nothing romantic is ever explicit, and by s2 they're friends and that's it. there's no discussion or drama. they're good friends. literally shocked me. apparently a guy and girl who fit a bunch of romantic tropes... can just be friends
sam winchester and eileen leahy:
The last season set them up to be together, and then in Sam’s finale flash-forward, they replaced her with “blurry wife” literally a random blurred out woman rather than having him end up with Eileen Eileen is the coolest Supernatural character: she's deaf and also formerly dead (like Sam)
asuka tenjoin and yuki judai:
The ship name (fianceshipping) comes from the episode where Judai *accidentally* duels some guy to become Asuka's fiance (said guy never asks Asuka how she feels about this, ugghhh greater Duel Academia student body be normal about ladies challenge). Turns out that he *didn't know what a fiance was* and just wanted to have a good ol' time cardgaming. I think that this says more about this ship than anything else I could tell you. During the final season, Asuka almost confesses to him but cuts herself off & they then thank each other for giving each other some clarity of mind because they're both going through pretty rough times at that point in the plot. Looks concerningly like they're about to do a whole "ohh we need to make the main girl and boy romance out of obligation" bit and then they just don't do it. It's great. judai is the gayest guy of all time (subtext) and im like 80% sure asuka was experiencing comphet bc he's the only guy in their grade that treats her like a person. besties 4ever!!!!!!!! [straightmod has been informed that judai is also textually queer because he is canonically attracted to a non-binary character.]
kurosaki ichigo and kuchiki rukia:
Oh man, where do I even begin? So, for some context, Bleach starts when Rukia (a shinigami) gets critically injured saving Ichigo from a monster, and she transfers her powers to him so he can finish it off. Instead of transferring half her powers as planned, however, she transfers all of them, which forces Ichigo to take over her job as a shinigami. During this time period, Rukia... lives in his closet. Yeah. The entire first arc of the manga is dedicated to their relationship, and while a lot of it is playful banter, Rukia's presence in Ichigo's life fundamentally changes it for the better. Rukia then gets kidnapped by the rest of the shinigami who aren't at all happy she gave her powers to a human, and the main plot ensues from there. Throughout the story, Rukia and Ichigo constantly save each other when they're at their worst. When Rukia thinks she deserves to die, Ichigo is there to tell her she deserves to live. When Ichigo is in a funk about his superpowered evil side, Rukia is there to snap him out of it (something his canon love interest explicitly realises she was unable to do). They share a sun/moon motif for crying out loud, and yet like that last sentence said... they don't end up together, but with other people instead. Yeah. No shade to the canon ships, but Ichiruki is peak straightbaiting, honestly. They have a lot of banter/chemistry, fundamentally change eachother's lives for the better, save each other when they're at their lowest, and have a very deliberate sun/moon dichotomy... but they both end up paired off with different characters instead asdfghkl
izuku midoriya and ochako uraraka:
It’s the classic main character x friend who is a girl ship. They have no actual romantic interactions outside of their friendship. Ochako has “feelings” for Izuku, but they are clearly feelings of friendship until one of her friends insists that she must have a crush on Izuku, making her feel confused and embarrassed. Izuku clearly sees Ochako as a good friend, but when they first meet, he blushes and thinks “I can’t believe I just talked to a girl.” On the same day, he also blushes when he sees that a famous male hero is proctoring their exams. It’s literally so boring as a romantic ship. They have no chemistry as a couple.
edward elric and winry rockbell but SPECIFICALLY in the 2003 anime:
literally in different dimensions by the end! they still have a lot of the hallmarks of "ohh endgame childhood best friends" or whatever but fma 2003 just said. naah. winry got the shortest end of the stick and i feel so bad for her!!! continuity specific straightbait. in every other universe they get married and have kids but screw you two specifically 🙏
mako, korra, and asami:
it's that one meme where the guy ignores his girlfriend to check out another girl, only the two girls get to know each other and get together. S1/2 has love triangle drama between who Mako will be with (Korra or Asami). S3 no one is together but Korra and Asami become really close friends. S4 Korra and Asami are together. Mako is single. Like the only example of exes being good friends and Not getting back together, as well as giving the middle finger to heteronormative assumptions when after the love triangle is over, the two girls get together Shipping the two girls in a love triangle together but it actually happens
pat and ink:
Pat has a crush on Ink early on, and it seems possible at first that she may feel the same way. However, it is later revealed that she actually has a crush on his sister and is a lesbian. It's okay though because then Pat realizes he's in love with his childhood rival and they become wlw mlm solidarity! Everyone wins!
maka albarn and soul evans:
Throughout the series, they have a deep friendship with each other which is consistently extremely important to the story's narrative. In order for them to be able to fight, they must get along and resonate with each other, and due to the mechanics of their world, fighting independently of each other is extremely difficult. In multiple instances, they are shown to be willing to put themselves in harm's way to extreme degrees to keep each other safe. They are even shown to live together. They are The Singular Straight Ship I have ever shipped and I love them. Also they are really cool and Soul can turn into an awesome scythe weapon that like only Maka can wield. And they fight really awesomely together.
luke skywalker and leia organa:
The idea of Luke and Leia was used in advertisements but they obviously decided not to do that. IT’S SO FUNNY. Like, I think this is the closest white straight people will ever get to ‘they were cousins’ing a couple. I looked up advertising to see if it was just in the movie proper or it WAS used to sell it and https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5z1SziDPKQw&t=118s&pp=2AF2kAIB ‘Luke and Leia: in danger, in love, in Star Wars’ is going to be one of the things that rolls around in my head for ages. It’s not just the whole ‘het love triangle advertises 2nd pairing that everyone knows won’t happen’ like Twilight, it’s the backpeddaling ‘no no it can’t happen, they’re actually siblings! It’d be weird! Ignore the ‘good luck’ kiss and the ‘I’ll be back’ kiss in the medbay and of course the full on make out session scene that happened! And even our own advertising’ Of it all.
good luck everybody! now go vote!

So apparently next week is the wedding episode, followed by “Pine Barrens”. The episode description for “Pine Barrens” reads: “Nandor and Laszlo air out their differences on a hunting trip at an isolated cabin …”. So what do you think will happen? Is Laszlo going to do something that ruins the wedding? Of course we all know Nandor is the reason the wedding will be ruined, but something has to create a conflict between Nandor and Laszlo. ???
I've written about this a bit before but...
I do think the two strongest options are either Nandor blaming Laszlo for the demise of his wedding or Nandor finally getting angry about Laszlo ruining his trip with Guillermo.
I have a feeling that the wedding is going to be an absolute train wreck. We haven't heard more than like five lines from Marwa in the entire series, and it's extremely obvious that Nandor doesn't particularly like being around her. She has to know that, she's a smart woman. She's even started to sound kind of put out about it.
If I had to choose an end for Marwa, it would be her waiting out Nandor using up the last of his wishes (which could easily happen, considering he's getting low and I can see him using a lot of them on the wedding) so she can leave without him poofing her. Then, once she's free, maybe she even gets custody of the Djinn herself? I think that would be an amazing ending for her. Then she can be anything she wants to be.
We all know that Nandor is 1000% to blame for how shitty his relationship with Marwa is, but we also know that he does tend to externalize blame. (Nandor's accusations of treachery during the trailer for next week makes me think that he's primed to blame someone else for whatever disaster is on its way, to be sure.) If Laszlo has any fuck-ups during the wedding, he could easily get blamed for it. We were also promised a full vampire wedding this season, so Laszlo and Nadja might even use the ruined wedding as an opportunity to renew their vows or something. I could see that pissing Nadja off.
I guess what has me unsure about that one is how Laszlo seems to be in response. Like he took a shot at Nandor's head in one of the trailers! That seems to imply that it's not just a one-way fight. So instead of asking what could piss Nandor off, maybe we should be asking what could anger Laszlo?
We could argue that Laszlo might simply be responding to Nandor's shittiness, but the thing is... we know how he responds to people being mad at him. He brushes it off or he runs away. The fact that he seems to be actively engaging in a fight with Nandor gives me pause. The only things that really seem to get under Laszlo's skin are issues with Nadja or perhaps Baby Colin, so maybe something to do with them...? That does make me wonder if it's the Guillermo thing finally coming to a head, because that would involve both of them.
It's unclear how much of what happened with Guillermo Nandor fully understands at this point, and it's even less clear if he's truly made his peace with it. If he's already raw over Marwa leaving him at the altar or something, Laszlo being so happy with Nadja (and happily ruining Nandor's happiness to get it) might be salt enough in the wound to make him finally blow up about it. We know that Nandor tends to nurse grudges, despite being outwardly okay...
Plus, if Marwa does leave him at the altar, that might remind him of Guillermo leaving him with his dick in his hand at a train station in New Jersey! So if he learns (and/or thinks about) Laszlo causing that, it could really piss him off!
There's always been some resentment simmering between the two of them, but they mostly seem to get along pretty okay! So I'm very curious to see what'll have them at each other's throats. Part of me wonders if they'll get trapped in that cabin together and being unable to get out will make them come to blows right there.

Season 1, Episode 34: Dedicated Involved Loving Fathers
(Note: This is a long one y'all. I ended up typing out all of my thoughts on this one)
Favorite Moment: The entire phone call with Beth May.
General Thoughts:
All right: because I'm really curious, I want to sit and log my feelings as I listen to this. As I mentioned in my previous post, this is the one episode that I've not been able to relisten to because it set me off the first time I heard it. I was listening to the podcast in the car, because I was doing a lot of commuting, and I was so confused by this episode that I exited out of the episode a couple of different times, sure that I had accidentally skipped an episode. And that confusion has just really put me off from this episode. Looking back on the episode, it's very clever, from what I can remember of it, but it bothered me so much. Maybe it's because I was driving, and so instead of just being a fun time, it became this huge distraction.
So, what I remember of this episode, is that there is a fight with bounty hunters and somehow they end up riding on a bunch of animals. And there are some shenanigans with Dennis. But that's it. Most of the details of this episode are not in my brain anymore.
So here we go, let's see how I feel about this one on my second go-around. (By the way, I finished episode 33 over a week ago, have hit play on this episode three times, and have been unable to listen to it. But now it's time. I'm going to do this.)
This intro is very dumb, but very funny. And I love a good "flip to side two" joke. It makes my old millennial heart happy.
The whole table talk and Dad fact portion does a great job of integrating Ashley naturally. So flawless it threw me.
Grant's nickname is shooter? Oh no. The context of that now is unfortunately not a funny baby poop joke. Oof.
Again, so nonchalant in with the Dennis stuff. And I didn't realize that he was also a rogue. No wonder Ron doesn't like him.
His anchor is at the librarium decepticus? That's so smart.
Thanks Ron, for saying all the things I felt listening to this the first time.
Okay, enjoying the episode so far. Doing a quick check-in on how I'm feeling. Maybe it's just me and this horrible bias I have against this episode, but it feels different. It's still enjoyable and I'm still smiling while I'm listening, but it's more that I'm enjoying the heat between Ron and Dennis. I don't know, this is a weird experience.
Ron fell on to his dagger? There's definitely some shenanigans happening here. Accident? I think not!
Poor Grant. Why give him an axe? I had forgotten about all of the additional trauma that happens to this boy in this episode.
Dennis has always been Paeden's favorite? Ugh. Feels awful. Poor Darryl.
Ron doing what Dennis does is great.
RIP jug. It was a cool, useful item.
I'm just happy to be here. Ok, that was flawless. Hats off to Ashley for that one.
So much shade being thrown towards Ron AND Beth. I don't like it. But I like it.
The energy. Is so weird.
It's not bad, for a combat episode. But doesn't feel like how they do combat. More like how actual combat goes in a DnD game.
Okay, another feelings check in. I really do love the Ron anti-Dennis heat. It is very funny.
So we're now 30 minutes from the end of the episode, and the combat is over. And I have no idea what is left because I don't remember anything else from this episode.
Ok, the entire Beth May phone call is hysterical.
Love that Erin hates Dennis too. Oh wait. Nope. She's playing hard to get. That is pretty funny.
Mr. Mustache meets Terry! And Terry finally believes Ron!
Dennis brings up Scam... And reveals himself as Mark. Glenn's line of "Mark- what did you do with Dennis?" Very funny. He's revealed and then disappears.
And there's some planning and apologizing and that's it. I did it!
And next time, we get to what I consider the official start of Arc 2. Let's go get some anchors!

Why Ben and Devi are Endgame (Meta)
At the heart of every rom-com, it always comes down to this: what does the protagonist truly want?
Why Devi and Paxton Don’t Work
In the season 2 finale, Devi triumphantly says “So, I guess I'm Paxton Hall-Yoshida’s girlfriend now”. She got what she thought she wanted at the start of her journey, only it’s not what she wants anymore.
Although Devi cares for Paxton, she views him as a status symbol. Paxton, for all his growth, still sees himself as cooler than her. And no, he was not just embarrassed because she cheated on him. Before he knew she was cheating, he invited his friends on their first date and refused to call her his girlfriend. In the finale, it once again takes someone else to point out that he shouldn’t blow her off. As Devi and Paxton walk into the dance, he gives his friends a sheepish look while they judge him. Not only does he still have lingering feelings of embarrassment, his friends’ reactions suggest turbulence ahead for their relationship.
There is also a lack of communication between Paxton and Devi. They have a magical kiss by the window, and makeout sessions afterwards, but they don't actually talk about their relationship in that elapsed time. Devi makes the assumption that they are together and Paxton doesn’t articulate what he wants until it is forced out of him.
What can we conclude from this? Paxton is a great character, but he is not the one for Devi. They have differing interests and goals, a lack of communication and they do not see each other for their true worth.
Can the writers surmount all of these issues to give them an endgame? Yes, but it would require fundamentally changing who Devi and Paxton are.
Why Devi and Ben Work
In episode 1 of season 2, Devi wants to pick Ben but her friends talk her out of it. This is crucial to understanding why they belong together: her gut instinct has already revealed the truth. She had both guys vying for her and she wanted Ben. Just by this one fact alone, we can infer that Devi’s relationship with Ben was more meaningful to her than her pursuit of Paxton in season 1.
When it’s revealed that Devi is two-timing the boys, Paxton is hurt but Ben is devastated. Paxton likes her, but Ben connected with her on a deeper emotional level. Devi follows Paxton out of the party, which is understandable because he is the one walking away. Again, this is cleverly hinting at their communication styles. Paxton wants to avoid the situation and Ben wants to talk about it. From Ben’s perspective, Paxton is the guy she has wanted for so long and he is the second choice.
Throughout the season, Ben never considers the fact that Devi could want him over Paxton, which is equal parts sad and infuriating. Her therapist asks what she wants more than anything and she says Ben. In context, it’s a comical line, but it’s also Devi revealing her truth. Like she does at the beginning of the season, she makes a choice and it’s Ben. She pursues Ben romantically before Paxton even though Paxton is the one more willing to forgive her.
It takes Ben longer to forgive her, and yet he is still there for her when she needs help. The little things he does like give her advice about Aneesa and make her feel better about Paxton’s rejection all show Devi’s ability to be vulnerable with Ben.
As an aside, they had the opportunity to show Devi being vulnerable with Paxon but didn’t take it. In episode 8 of season 2, Paxton sees Devi crying and she reveals that she got into a really bad fight with Eleanor. I was thinking: here it is, here is the moment that Paxton finally helps Devi with her problems... but no. His response is “seems like you’re in a fight with lots of people” and the conversation quickly shifts to her apologizing and helping him yet again. Devi is able to open up to Ben and be supported by him in a way that she can’t with Paxton.
Before I talk about the finale, which is arguably the biggest point in Ben and Devi’s favour, I want to look at the season overall. The entire story arc is Ben and Devi wanting to be together but constantly running into roadblocks in the form of Eleanor/Fabiola, Paxton and Aneesa. It was so alarmingly obvious they belonged together after season 1, that the writers had to find ways to forcibly separate them for the time being. It’s important for Ben and Devi’s relationship that she dates Paxton first. If she had been allowed to go for Ben, they would have had to explore Devi wondering what she missed out on. When Devi and Ben do get their happy ending, it will be because Devi has realized that Paxton is not the person for her.
In the finale of season 2, we get 3 crucial scenes from Devi and Ben. The first is the bathroom scene which reaffirms Devi’s ability to be vulnerable with Ben and his ability to support her (something she doesn’t have with Paxton). The second is their tension-filled scene at the dance where they longingly stare at each other. This directly contrasts the scene in episode 8, where Devi tries to reframe her mindset and stop seeing Ben as someone she is attracted to. Here, it becomes apparent that she is unable to stop thinking about him in a romantic way despite actively trying.
The third scene is basically Eleanor saying “you dummy, she wanted to choose you!”. The writers intentionally reference the pros-cons scene from episode 1, re-affirming that Devi wants Ben. The only reason they are not together is because he is not an option.
Then we get the line “it wasn’t always him”. Many Devi and Paxton fans believe her choice was Ben, but he took too long and now it’s too late. But when has it ever been too late for a main love interest in a rom-com? Mindy Kaling is a rom-com savant, and she knows as well as I do that it’s only ever “too late” for douchey guys who do not acknowledge the self-worth of the heroine. That’s not Ben though, he has always seen Devi for who she is.
The heartbreak on Ben’s face is infinitely worse than Paxton’s voicemail at the end of season 1, although these scenes are meant to parallel each other. Devi and Paxton are two people who like each other but do not work as a long-term relationship. Ben and Devi are two people who work as a long-term relationship but never acknowledge their feelings for each other at the right time. It’s a tragedy just waiting to be rectified in season 3.
Season 3 Predictions
Now that I've given my analysis on why Devi and Ben are meant to be, here are some predictions I have on the Devi-Ben-Paxton love triangle for season 3.
Fabiola/Eleanor will be the ones to help Devi act on her true feelings for Ben. This one is a no-brainer for me. After sabotaging their chance to be happy in the first place, Fabiola and Eleanor will decide that they want their friend to be happy and set things right. It will also parallel Ben mending their friendship in season 1.
Paxton and Devi will have some sweet moments in the first half of the season, but not without their issues. The lack of communication and their respective status (the way they view each other) will cause them to fight. They will break-up mid-season, but the ending will leave hope for reconciliation.
On that note, I do not think they will kill the love triangle. Even though we will likely see Devi confessing her feelings for Ben and saying that she wanted to choose him all along, this is still a TV show. Contentious love triangles = buzz and money.
Ben and Aneesa will break up by mid-season, but probably earlier. Ben will find it hard to be in a relationship with Aneesa as he grapples with his feelings for Devi.
Ben will be a pillar of support to Devi as she navigates how to be a girlfriend. It’s the classic trope of the guy helping the girl win over the man of her dreams, only to realize that the person she wants is right in front of her.
Devi and Ben’s friendship and lingering feelings will culminate in an epic finale confession and kiss. Everything that they were unable to say to each other last season will be spoken aloud in season 3.
Ben and Devi are soulmates, drawn to each other and unable to avoid their feelings. I can’t wait for them to take over my life again next year.

Bring You Back
pairing: Natasha Romanoff x fem reader
summary: r and nat have happily been together for over a year, until everything comes crashing down. now, nat and the avengers will stop at nothing to get back the r they know
genre: angst w happy ending
word count: 10k
warnings: swearing, cheating, mind control/brainwashing, setting things on fire, Supergirl references, two sentences that could potentially be interpreted as implied smut but that wasn’t my intention, lmk if i need to add any more
A/N: this is set in the same universe as Operation Fire Widow but you don’t need to read that to understand this!
also this is kinda proofread, and by that i mean it’s 2am and i read over it but i’m tired and not thinking straight so the proofread doesn’t really count
”I swear, if you two don’t get married then I won’t believe in love anymore,” Carol said as she sat down on the chair across from you and Natasha.
You smiled as you felt your girlfriend’s arms around you tighten.
Carol couldn’t help but smile proudly at the two of you.
You had been together for a little over a year, but you had been crushing on her for months beforehand. Carol, being one of your best friends, had been part of the big plan created to get the two of you together. Things didn’t end up going as planned, but of course it all worked out in the end.
“Does anyone want a blanket before it starts?” Wanda asked as she entered the living room.
Carol and Peter both nodded at her, but Natasha simply shook her head.
“I have my blanket right here,” she whispered into your ear.
You grinned, then closed your eyes. You purposely used your pyrokinesis to heat yourself up to just the right temperature so your girlfriend could be warm.
She leaned forward, planting a gentle kiss on your neck, causing you to giggle.
In the past year that you were together, Natasha evidently found out about your love for Supergirl.
It took some convincing, but eventually you were able to get her to binge watch the show with you so she could catch up to the live episodes.
“Y’know, you’re kinda like Kara if you think about it,” Natasha had told you. “You’re a happy little ray of sunshine, but you can also be a powerful badass when you want to,”
You smiled at her, giving her a quick kiss.
“I think you’re like Lena,” you replied, smiling at her. “You don’t have powers, but you’re still a badass and the team would basically be lost without you. You’re also super smart, and not to mention the fact that you both have gorgeous green eyes. Plus, you and Lena both act like you’re all dark and scary, but deep down you’re a softie,”
She rolled her eyes at the last sentence, prompting you to giggle before kissing her once again.
“So if I’m Kara and you’re Lena, then that means that you have reason to ship Supercorp now!”
“I already ship them, detka.” She told you, tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear. “Lena clearly makes her smile a lot more than Mon-El ever did. I wish he never came back in the first place, but Lena did right by making the device that required him to leave Earth,”
“I’m so proud of you.”
Now, Natasha had caught up so she could watch the episodes live with you Carol, Wanda, and Peter.
The current season wasn’t great, but you had been watching it since the pilot of the show first aired and you certainly weren’t going to stop now.
“Damn it,” you heard Natasha whisper as William appeared on the screen. “I don’t want to see him,”
You smiled, then placed your hands over hers, which were currently resting on your lower stomach.
“He’s just taking up screen-time that should be going to Nia, or Alex or Kelly,” she said to you.
You nodded in agreement, softly rubbing your thumb over her knuckles.
You leaned back father into her, allowing her to place a few kisses on your head.
“I love you, Natty,” you said softly, looking up at her.
“I love you too,” she whispered back, unable to stop the smile on her face.
“Hey, lovebirds!” Carol said, pausing the show. “Do your little sappy couple stuff later, we’re about to get a Supercorp moment,”
You breathed out a chuckle, then turned your attention back to the screen.
-
After the episode ended, Natasha insisted on carrying you back to your shared bedroom because of how tired you were.
You nodded, allowing her to effortlessly pick you up and take you upstairs to bed.
Luckily, you had decided to wear your pajamas before going down for Supergirl, so you didn’t have to change now that you were as tired as you were.
She gently set you down on the bed, climbing next to you as soon as she changed into her own pajamas.
Her arms had become your home at this point. You scooted yourself closer to her, placing your head underneath her chin as you wrapped your arms around her.
A yawn escaped your mouth as you began to entangle your legs with hers.
“Natty?” You asked her, not quite ready to fall asleep yet. She nodded for you to continue. “When do you think Bucky’s gonna ask Steve out? I can tell he likes him. Maybe we should do something for him like my friends did with me last year,”
Her breath had hitched the moment you mentioned Bucky’s name.
“What?” You asked her, eyes opening wider now.
“I don’t think Bucky likes Steve,” she said. Not in her soft voice she normally used with you. But with her voice she used with everyone else.
“What makes you say that?” You asked, your smile faltering a bit.
“He just doesn’t,”
“And how would you know that?”
“Don’t worry about it, let’s just go to sleep.”
You backed away from her, raising yourself up so you were on your elbows now.
“Why are you being so defensive?”
“I’m not!”
“You are,”
“Y/N I told you, don’t worry about it!”
Her eyes had widened, and she almost looked afraid. And that made you afraid.
“Natty, what’s going on?”
She said nothing, but broke her eye contact.
“Natasha,” you said, your own tone changing a bit too. It wasn’t your happy, cheerful tone you had most of the time. It was the tone you used while on the battlefield, or during interrogations. “Tell me what’s going on right now.”
“I can’t,” she said at almost a whisper. Tears formed in her eyes, threatening to fall down.
“Tell me, or I’ll ask Bucky myself,”
“No, don’t!” She begged. “Please don’t! It didn’t mean anything! You’re the one I love!”
Your heart fell, as she practically confirmed your fear.
You were wide awake now.
“No,” you got out. “No it’s not true,”
You pulled yourself out of her grasp and got out of the bed. You sped-walked down to the end of the hall, Natasha following after you.
Your fists were balled so tightly, you were sure your nails would leave a mark; they were almost drawing blood.
You had to take a deep breath before knocking on his door, you didn’t want to set it on fire.
“Yeah?” He asked, opening it. His smile fell as soon as he saw Natasha’s tear-struck face.
“What did you guys do?” You asked shakily, looking between them.
“You told her?!” Bucky said angrily.
“No, no, no, no, no,” you said softly, your stomach already twisting. “It’s true?”
“I promise it didn’t mean anything,” Natasha cried desperately. She pulled your arm back, flinching at the heat radiating off of it, but she didn’t let go. “It was only once, we just had a bit too much to drink, and-”
You pulled your arm out of her grasp, already feeling the tears falling down your cheeks.
“When?”
“Two weeks ago,” Bucky answered, earning a glare from Natasha.
“Y/N, baby, please,” she said as she reached out for you again. “I love you, and I want you,”
You couldn’t even look at her.
Without another word, you made your way back to your bedroom. Not the one you shared with Natasha, but the one you had before you and her got together.
At this point you began to hyperventilate. You could hear the banging coming from the other side of your door, but you weren’t going to open it.
You lay facing down on your bed, letting the sobs escape as your breathing only got faster.
Before you knew it, the pillow you were clinging onto had completely caught on fire.
“Shit,” you said, shaking it to try to get rid of it.
Unfortunately, your grip on it only made it worse. So you tossed it onto the bed.
Bad idea.
Now the entire bed was on fire.
“Oh, fuck it!”
Luckily, Tony had used his nanotech to upgrade all of your suits. So with a tap to your watch, your fireproof superhero suit began to appear.
If you could smother the flames with something that wouldn’t catch on fire, maybe it could work.
It did not.
The fire alarm was now going off.
“Fuck, shit, fuck,” you muttered.
You closed your eyes, holding your hand out to attempt to use your powers to put the flames out, but it didn’t work. You could still hardly breathe, and your vision was still blurry with tears.
Finally, you fell to your knees, letting out a scream that carried so many emotions.
When you opened your eyes, the flames were gone. Your hands were shaking, your chest was burning, and the fire alarm was still going off, but the flames were gone.
You let out a shaky sigh.
You stood up, ready to open the door, but you stopped yourself right before you grabbed the handle.
You couldn’t be here anymore. You wouldn’t. Not after what she did to you.
You figured you’d call one of your childhood friends, and stay with her for a bit. You two had always had one another’s backs, so you didn’t doubt that she’d help you.
You made your way back to the door, silently praying that no one would still be waiting.
You wish had half-come true. Natasha wasn’t right outside your door anymore, but she was down the hall heading toward you. It looked like she was carrying something to open your door, since she wouldn’t have been able to do it herself with the material it was.
You quickly broke eye contact with her, then dashed down the other end of the hall. You heard her footsteps, but you didn’t stop running.
“Y/N, please!” She called, finally catching up to you as you stood outside yours and her bedroom door.
“Get away from me,” you choked out.
You just needed to grab your phone so you could call your friend. You needed your phone so you could get away from the person who had caused you all the pain you were feeling.
You opened the door, wasting no time in finding your phone right where you left it on the nightstand.
Unfortunately, your eyes met hers as you turned back around.
“Please, let’s just talk about this! Y/N, I love you!”
“I wish I believed that.”
You brushed past her, leaving her stunned.
You couldn’t face anyone right now. Once you got to your friend’s place, you’d text your other friends and let them know that you were safe.
But for now, you exited the building without another word.
You were thankful for your fire powers at this moment. You could see your breath in front of you, so you knew it had to be cold for anyone without pyrokinesis.
Once you got far enough away from the compound (you knew you were far enough when you could no longer hear the fire truck that had automatically been sent over by F.R.I.D.A.Y.) you pulled your phone out, and scrolled through your contacts until you found your friend.
You clicked the call button, holding the phone up to your ear.
“Please pick up, please pick up, please pick up...”
The phone rang a few more times as you waited for her, but you never found out if she actually picked up or not; as you suddenly lost consciousness at the feeling of a blow to your head.
Part of you tried to fight whatever was happening to you, hearing the voices as your body was dragged around. But the other part of you thought about what Natasha had done to you. That part didn’t fight.
And that part won.
6 months later
”We have intel on a HYDRA base formed near here, responsible for multiple civilian casualties and experimentation,” Steve told everyone.
Natasha had been staring at the empty seat at the table, once filled with your presence.
“Nat,” Steve said to her, sighing.
“What?” She asked, being brought back to reality.
“Look, Nat,” he said softly. “We need you for this. We need the whole team.”
She said nothing, but nodded at him.
She had to restrain herself from shifting her gaze back to your empty chair. She also had to restrain herself from looking at anyone but Steve to avoid everyone else’s lingering glares.
Most missions didn’t need the whole team, but because no one had been to this base before, they didn’t know what to expect. Because of that, it was better to be prepared and have the whole team rather than risking a few people for what could be too much for them.
The base was only about 30 minutes on the Quinjet, so definitely within somewhat close proximity.
Steve sent Wanda and Natasha down first.
Neither of them said anything to each other. Wanda had hardly said two words to her at all since you left. She missed you, and she blamed her for your leaving.
Tony and Carol followed close behind.
Natasha held her gun at her side, holding it up at every corner they passed.
Of course, she wasn’t really thinking about this mission, or about HYDRA.
She was thinking about you.
She was thinking about how you would go out of your way to hold her hand while she was nervous on missions. She didn’t get nervous until you.
Before you, she never really felt that she had a reason to be nervous.
But once she was with you, she would always get scared that she wouldn’t make it back to you, or you wouldn’t make it back to her.
Even after you left, her nerves didn’t go away.
With her powers, Wanda could sense Natasha’s anxiety. She was pretty good at hiding it, but her thoughts were loud enough for Wanda to tell otherwise.
They rounded the next corner, making their way into a room filled with computers.
“We’re in,” Wanda said through her earpiece.
Natasha made her way to one of the computers, and began to type away to get what they needed.
If she hadn’t been the cause for you leaving, Wanda, along with the team in general, would actually feel bad for the assassin. She hardly went on missions anymore, unless they absolutely needed her.
She could hide her emotions when people looked her straight in the face, but they all knew that she had been miserable since you had left.
Before you, she didn’t smile very often. When she did, it was usually just a small grin. But once she was with you, she couldn’t help but smile almost all the time around you. She wouldn’t hesitate to fully smile with you, especially when you were always smiling at her.
“Oh my god, Natasha,” Wanda said, letting out a long, frustrated sigh. “For just one second, could you stop thinking about…”
Natasha perked up when she noticed that Wanda didn’t finish her sentence.
She turned around to see what she was looking at, causing her jaw to drop instantly.
“Y/N…”
-
“Let go of me!”
“No! I don’t belong here!”
“What did you do to me? Why can’t I use my powers?”
“Get away from me!”
Your cries echoed through everyone’s ears as you were restrained in a small cell.
Your plan was to burn the two redheads before they could get HYDRA’s important files, but they had failed to inform you that one of them had powers too. Except her powers allowed her to constrict you in mid-air as you fought against her.
She eventually put you into some sort of trance, so you wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone.
You weren’t sure why everyone was looking at you the way they did, but you figured it had something to do with them being Avengers.
In your months as a HYDRA agent, they always warned you of the Avengers. They said they couldn’t let you get anywhere near them.
You weren’t sure why, I mean, you could literally control fire with your mind. Had you been paired against anyone other than the redheaded witch, you would’ve easily won.
“Y/N,” came the voice of Captain America.
“That’s not my name. I don’t know who Y/N is,” you replied, sending him a harsh glare.
“Y/N, we know this isn’t you. We’re going to do everything in our power to get you back,”
You scoffed,
“This is who I am. Why don’t you just kill me and get it over with? Especially since you haven’t even given me the liberty to be able to defend myself, by taking my powers,”
He sighed,
“We’re not going to kill you. Tony designed this cell to counteract abilities like yours. It’s not doing any damage to you, but you won’t be able to use them. We can’t allow you to have your powers while you’re like this,”
“Then just fucking kill me!”
He sighed again.
“I’m going to leave you in here for the night, but we’ll be back tomorrow,”
He waved goodbye, and even gave you a small smile.
You weren’t sure why he did it, but you only glared back.
-
“I can’t do it, Clint,” Natasha said, pacing around in circles.
Clint was the only one who didn’t completely shun her and shut her out after finding out what happened. Part of him wanted to, but he knew she needed somebody. Even if it was just one person. And if that one person had to be him, then so be it.
“You don’t have to do it now, especially since she’s not… the Y/N we know. But you can’t avoid her forever.”
“She left me. For all we knew, she could’ve been dead. She made no contact, she clearly didn’t want us to find her. I thought…. I thought she was gone forever. But now HYDRA has her, and it’s my fault.”
“Nat, you can’t blame yourself for this. Her abilities are unique, so it’s not surprising that they would target her like this,”
“It is my fault. If I hadn’t… done what I did, if I hadn’t been so fucking stupid, she wouldn’t have ran off like that. She wouldn’t have been taken.”
“You’re right, you were fucking stupid. But you didn’t cause HYDRA to take her and mess with her mind. That’s on them, not you,”
She shifted her gaze to the floor as tears began to form in her eyes.
“I’ve missed her so much, Clint,” she said, her voice breaking. “I wish I could take it all back. I wish it never happened. I wish I could just hold her in my arms and never let go,”
He took a step closer to her, then wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close as she began to sob.
Just then, Steve began to make his way back, passing the kitchen.
“Anything?” Clint asked as he walked by, still holding Natasha close as she continued to cry.
Steve gave a solemn look, then shook his head no.
When he saw the way Natasha was crying, he felt a pang of sympathy for her. Yes, she had broken the heart of one of the nicest, and overall universally liked person, but he couldn’t help but want to comfort her in this moment. She was once his friend too.
Instead, he continued to the meeting room to consult the rest of the team and inform them of your state.
-
Steve kept his promise about returning. He was only there for a few minutes before Tony Stark stood in front of your cell.
He looked like he was about to throw up.
“So,” he began, stepping forward. “Do you know why you’re here, any of this look familiar to you?”
“God, for someone who’s supposed to be a genius, you’re really fucking stupid,”
“Look, whatever HYDRA’s told you isn’t true. They’re filling your head with lies. Both literally and figuratively.”
“Sure they are,”
“Well then why don’t you tell me what all you remember of your life before HYDRA?”
“Nothing,” you said with a shrug. “But that doesn’t mean they’re lying to me. They’re the ones who gave me my pyrokinesis, which you took from me, but the memory loss was a side effect.”
“They didn’t give you your powers, Y/N, you got them when you were a sophomore in college. Freak accident with something that wasn’t supposed to be in your chemistry class, but it ended up working out for you. You became an Avenger two years ago,”
“Don’t call me that. Don’t call me Y/N.”
“Fine then. What would you like me to call you? What name did HYDRA give you?”
“I don’t have a name. I have an identity.”
“Alright then, what’s your identity?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“Cute. Alright, that’s enough for now,”
He left you. It seemed you had annoyed him enough.
No one came by for the rest of the day.
Well, that’s not entirely true. One person, who looked like he was just a kid, stopped by to slip food through the tray.
“Here you go, Miss.”
He didn’t call you the same thing Tony and Steve did. You were grateful for it.
But as soon as his eyes met yours, they instantly filled with tears and he ran out.
You had always been well-liked among all the Avengers, but Tony began to have a soft spot for you when you became friends with Peter. You were a bit older than him, but you always acted like a big sister to him, and thought of him as your little brother. Soon enough, Tony began viewing you as a daughter figure.
He didn’t like the idea of Peter going in there with you, but he was outvoted when the kid volunteered to bring your food.
He knew he was right when he saw him running back, rubbing his shirt against his eyes to wipe away the tears.
For the next week, it became a routine. Steve and Tony would come by, and try to get you to talk, but ended up just going in circles. You were beginning to wish they actually had killed you.
But after the first week, something changed. Two women walked in.
You recognized one of them as the redhead who used her powers on you, and the other was a taller blonde who looked vaguely familiar.
“What now?” You asked, sitting against the wall.
Neither of them made clear eye contact.
“You’re the one who suspended me in the air while your teammates fucking captured me,” you said, pointing at Wanda.
“We didn’t capture you, HYDRA did,” she told you.
“That seems to be a common theme going around, and it’s getting tiring. But you know what? Go ahead, tell me more about how they’re lying to me when they’re the ones who made me into what I am today,”
“We’re not here to talk about HYDRA,” Carol said, looking up.
“Oh? Well then by all means, do continue,”
She took a deep breath in,
“You were more than our teammate, you were our friend. So if you’re tired of us telling you that your life is a lie, we’ll tell you about your life here,”
You shrugged. You were bored. If what they said would keep you entertained, then you didn’t have a problem with it.
“I was the one who trained you with your powers. When we found you, you could hardly control them at all. You had run away from everything and everyone, trying to isolate yourself so you wouldn’t hurt anyone. The instant we saw you, we knew you were a good person. You had this look in your eyes-”
“Oh really?” You asked. “Where’s this look now?”
“Gone. Buried somewhere in your mind, along with the rest of your memories,”
You between both of them,
“Tell me why you’re really here,”
The truth was that Wanda believed she could somehow try to use her powers to get your memories back by searching through your head. She stood there, staring at you, trying to find anything that would show your old memories, but there was nothing.
If that wouldn’t work then it couldn’t hurt if they at least attempted to tell you a little bit more about your life here.
“I was there when you controlled fire for the first time, completely on your own. You were in control. You couldn’t believe it, but all I remember is feeling so incredibly proud of you. We kept working together, and soon, I was able to call you one of my best friends.”
You could see her crying, and you began to feel for her. You weren’t sure why; she was an Avenger. An Avenger who betrayed HYDRA nonetheless, but part of you wanted to comfort her.
“I’m sorry,” you said. You instantly regretted it. You couldn’t let them manipulate you like this.
“When I joined the team, you were the most welcoming person here. You had joined just a few weeks before me, but I could tell that everyone already loved you. It didn’t take long for me to love you too.” Carol said, her eyes filling with tears too.
They had to be lying, but you weren’t sure why part of you felt such a pull toward them. It had to be part of Wanda’s mental manipulation. That was the only explanation you could think of.
“The boy,” you began. “If what you’re saying is true, I-” you stopped yourself. “Y/N, was also close with him, right?”
“Yeah,” Wanda told you. “You and Peter become close fast. You originally bonded over TV shows you both liked, which turned into a thing for the four, and eventually five, of us to watch together,”
You still didn’t fully believe them, but if hearing about your supposed life would entertain you, then you’d keep listening.
This pattern also lasted a week. They would come in for about an hour per day, and tell you stories about your life here.
They told you about the time Wanda decided to teach you guys how to bake. You decided that waiting for it to heat up took too much time, so you held the pan in your hands and heated it up with your powers. They ended up burning to a crisp.
They told you about the time all of Peter’s friends ended up being out of town for his school dance, so you agreed to go with him. Wanda and Carol had managed to sneak in as well, to check on the two of you but everything ended up being fine.
They told you about the time you tried to high-five Tony after a mission, and his suit registered you as a threat at first because of how you jumped up to meet him, so it ended up blasting you 20 feet.
They told you about how you once calmed down the Hulk and turned him back into Bruce simply by smiling and waving at him.
They told you about the time where Steve made a political comment, and you slammed your hand on the table and spent the next two hours educating him on important political topics. They said you had practically radicalized the man from the 40’s.
-
One day, neither of them came in. It was surprising, as you had actually begun to slightly enjoy their company. Slightly.
Instead, Peter came in. He looked a little less nervous than the first time, but he managed to look you in the eye.
“Y/N…” he said.
Your stomach turned as an idea popped into your head. It was a terrible idea, and would most definitely hurt him. But it would get you out of here. It would allow you to get out, and get back to HYDRA.
“Peter!” You said, perking up in a high-pitched voice.
“Y/N?” He was confused now.
“Peter, Peter, Peter! I remember now! It’s all coming back to me! We were friends! Close friends, you were practically my brother! I remember it all!”
You strained yourself to keep your face smiling and optimistic.
He turned his head to the side, thinking about it.
It had to work. He had to believe you so he would let you out.
“Peter, I remember going with you to your dance! Your friends weren’t there, so I went with you. We ended up having a great time, especially when Wanda and Carol made an appearance too!”
He reached forward, about to open the cell when he stopped himself.
He wanted to believe you so bad. He wanted his sister back.
“Tell me about the little boxes,”
This had to be a code of some sort. Shit.
The Y/N they were describing seemed to be a bit clumsy, losing control of her powers and getting blasted by Tony while trying to high five him. You could picture Peter being similar to that too.
“I tripped over a bunch of tiny boxes, and then you fell right after me. We ended up laughing about it for hours,”
He sighed, looking away from you.
The truth was that little boxes were a Supergirl reference. You and Peter were both generally optimistic people, so you had confessed to each other that there was a lot of pressure with that to keep up the team’s spirits. So when you both saw Lena talk about how she uses the little boxes as her coping mechanism, you both knew it was unhealthy.
Luckily, you came up with a healthy version. You both could keep up your optimism with the team, but you had a free pass with each other. Undoing the little boxes, if you will.
He couldn’t bring himself to look back at you. He couldn’t believe he almost let you trick him like that.
So he walked out without another word.
Tony was waiting for him, and immediately pulled him in for a hug when he saw his face.
“I thought she was back for a moment,” he said. “I thought we got her back,”
Tony let out a long sigh. No one could get through to you, not even your best friends.
They only had one option left now; Natasha.
-
“You can do this, Nat,” Clint told her.
It had been four weeks since you’d been in your cell. Over a week since anyone from the team tried talking to you. She was the only option left.
She didn’t want to do it at first, she still didn’t.
But Clint eventually convinced her. He told her that she owed it to you to at least try. Whether it be out of her love for you, or because she hurt you, she owed it to you.
He walked with her until they reached the door. From there, she had to go on her own.
She walked down the hall, holding her arms around herself.
She took a deep breath, then finally stepped in front of your viewpoint.
You sat with your back against the wall, eating the last bit of your lunch.
“Hey,” you said, giving a simple wave.
She tried to steady her breaths before looking directly at you.
“You were there when they took me back here,” you told her. “I remember. You were at one of the computers, and I was about to attack you and Wanda before she suspended me in the air and you guys brought me here,”
“Remember anything else?”
“No. Were you someone important? I thought they were done sending in all of Y/N’s friends,”
“We weren’t friends,”
“Oh?”
“I loved you. Part of me always will,”
“You mean to tell me that I pulled the Black Widow? Okay, now I know you guys are lying to me,”
“Peter, Wanda, and Carol were the ones who devised the big plan to get us together. They wanted to figure out a way for me to need your warmth, so you could be my personal heater. It didn’t go like that, and you accidentally burned me while we were dancing. Then I found out you liked me, and the rest is history.”
“You got with Y/N after she burned you?”
“First of all, I know you didn’t actually mean to burn me. Second of all, I had liked you for some time too. When we first met, I instantly felt this pull toward you. Your smile made me feel things I never thought I could feel. You always went out of your way to make me smile. I thought it was because you were like that with everyone; but as soon as I learned about your feelings for me, I couldn’t believe it. I called you down the next day to ask you out, and that’s when we had our first kiss,”
“Sounds great,” you said nonchalantly, knowing it hurt her. “But if you claimed to love me so much, why didn’t you look for me?”
Her breath hitched.
“Oooh, I hit a nerve there,” you said with a chuckle. “What? Did it happen in the middle of a fight or something?”
That’s when the reality of the situation hit her. Yes, she would do everything in her power to get you back, but would you still want her even when she did get you back? You were right, you had left because Natasha had broken your heart. How would she face you again once you remembered it all, once you remembered what she did to you?
So she changed the subject.
“Did the others tell you about your favorite shows?”
“They told me that we would all watch shows together, but didn’t give specifics,”
“Your favorite was Supergirl. I always thought you were a lot like the main character, Kara. You just had this sunshine in your eyes, just like her.”
“And now?”
“Well, I guess you’ll see once you get to the sixteenth episode of season one.”
“When I get to that episode? So you’re resorting to TV shows for my memory?”
You couldn’t help but laugh, which brought her even more pain.
“I thought you wouldn’t mind the idea, I imagine it gets boring for you in here,”
“No, no, you’re right, it does. Look, if you want me to watch it, I’ll watch it, but…” you burst into laughter again.
It was pathetic how the Black Widow was so determined to get her sweet little Y/N back.
But, you were willing to let her try. You couldn’t wait to see it crash and burn.
-
“You really think I’m like Kara?” You asked her the next day as she came to see you. “I’m five episodes in, and she’s the most annoying character ever.”
Natasha sighed. She’d get you back eventually.
“Look, I’m just saying that they could’ve made her more interesting. Like, she has the potential to do so much more but instead all she does is be giddy and fake quirky.”
The truth was, part of the reason you had loved Kara so much originally was because you were able to relate to her in a way because of your powers. She suppressed them for years, just as you had tried to, but eventually embraced them and became Supergirl. Even if it was fictional, it’s a big part of the reason you found the courage to learn how to use your powers and become an Avenger. And of course, you did happen to have a personality just like hers.
Now, all you could do was roll your eyes at the character.
A few days later, Wanda eventually came back. She had a few brownies with her.
“What’s this for?” You asked her.
“You wanted to surprise Natasha with something sweet after she came back from a mission, but you couldn’t do it on your own. You had already made three failed batches, so you knocked on my door at 2:00 in the morning asking for help. I wanted to say no, because I was asleep and didn’t want to get up. But I saw the look on your face, and I just couldn’t say no to you. So I got up and helped you make them. They ended up turning out, and Natasha loved them.”
“And you’re giving me this because you think it’ll jog my memory?”
“Partially, but it’s also because I still care about you, Y/N. Even while you’re like this, I know my best friend is in there somewhere. I made them, and it didn’t feel right not to try at least,”
You shrugged as she slipped them through the opening to give them to you.
You took a bite, and instantly closed your eyes at the taste.
“Oh my god, Wands, this is amazing,” you told her as soon as you swallowed.
She had the biggest smile on her face. Not because you liked the brownies, but because you called her Wands.
You were coming back.
-
Two weeks later, Natasha was making her daily trip to you. You smiled at her, happy almost happy to see her.
“God, Lena’s so pretty,” you said to her. “Her eyes are just perfection,”
Natasha let out a chuckle,
“Glad to see you still have an appreciation for green eyes,”
“How could I not? I really hope Kara gets with her,”
She laughed again,
“Come on, I have a surprise for you,”
“What?”
She smiled, then unlocked your cell door. You turned your head, giving her a confused look.
She stepped into your cell, holding a bracelet of some sort.
“As much as I’d like to fully trust you to take you outside of your cell, I can’t. So this replicates the energy in this room, keeping you from using your powers,”
You shrugged, then held out your arm for her to put it on.
Once it was secure, she motioned for you to follow her.
She led you through the compound, resisting the urge to grab your hand and interlace your fingers with hers. She knew you would come back eventually, and all she wanted to do was hold you in her arms when you did.
“Anything look familiar?” She asked with a hopeful tone.
You felt a pit in your stomach as you shook your head no. You gave an apologetic look, then continued following her.
She said nothing, continuing to lead you through the compound until she opened a door, leading up to the roof.
She gave you a smile, then turned her head toward a blanket and pillows with a basket full of food.
“What’s this for?” You asked as you sat down across from her.
“I dunno, I wanted to do something for you. You’ve been confined to that cell for so long, I figured it’d be nice to bring you up here,”
She reached into the basket, then handed you a peanut butter sandwich.
Her smile widened as you took a bite out of it, and you couldn’t help but return her smile.
She reached across, and placed her hand on yours.
“I’m sorry,” she said immediately, starting to pull it back. You gripped it tighter so she wouldn’t pull back.
“It’s okay,”
You didn’t have your memories, but you knew that you and Natasha were a thing. It amazed you how the woman with a deadly reputation gave you such a soft smile.
Holding her hand felt familiar. It felt like home.
And you loved hated it.
“Why are you doing this, Natasha?” You asked her, rubbing small circles on the back of her hand. “Don’t tell me it’s just another effort to jog my memory,”
She looked down at your intertwined hands for a moment before meeting your eyes again.
“Because I love you,” she said honestly. “You were my everything, Y/N,”
You smiled at her again, feeling fluttery nerves build up in your stomach.
So you muttered something in Kryptonian.
“What was that?”
She pulled away, staring at you wide-eyed.
“What?” You asked, disappointed she pulled her hand away.
“You didn’t learn that from HYDRA,”
“What are you talking about?”
“What you just said to me, it’s a made up language,”
“All languages are made up,”
“No,” she rolled her eyes. “It’s Kryptonian, from Supergirl. You and Peter taught yourselves the language from online websites. You always called me that after you learned it. You’re remembering,”
She grabbed your hand once again, then leaned in closer. You reached out and grabbed her other hand, so you had both of your hands connected to hers between the two of you.
“My beautiful sunset,” you said in English this time.
She leaned forward even closer, inches away from closing the gap between yourselves.
“Wait,” you told her, pulling back. “I don’t have all my memories, but I know that we were together.” She nodded for you to continue. “I also know that there was some sort of fight before HYDRA. I need to know what happened, Natasha,”
Her breath became shaky as she disconnected your hands,
“Not now,”
“No, I want to know. I need to know. Because as much as I hate it, I’m feeling something for you. But I don’t want to, especially if I don’t know what happened. So tell me,”
She took a deep breath in, then stood up.
“I think we’ve spent enough time here, let’s take you back,”
“No! Just tell me what happened!”
“Don’t worry about it, let’s just go back.”
“Why are you being so defensive?”
“I’m not!”
“You are,”
“Y/N I told you, don’t worry about it!”
“Natasha,” you challenged. “Tell me what’s going on right now.”
“I can’t.”
-
That was three days ago, and Natasha hadn’t come to see you since. You missed her.
You had continued to binge your way through Supergirl, almost finishing the fifth season.
“I killed my brother for you! For our friends, don’t you understand what you’ve done?” You quoted perfectly. It didn’t surprise you at this point. You had those memories, and they would show up. But you couldn’t think about any past memories, sometimes they just showed up; like this scene and like the Kryptonian.
Your thoughts were interrupted as you looked up to see a man you hadn’t talked to before,
“Ah, the Winter Snowman,”
“Winter what now?”
You laughed, turning your body to fully face him.
“I know who you are. HYDRA’s beloved Winter Soldier. I just think Winter Snowman is funnier. So, what brings you here?”
“I haven’t talked to you yet,”
“Why’s that? Did we not like each other or something?”
“We were friends,” he told you, looking at the floor. “Once, I was up in the middle of the night because of nightmares, and you happened to be up too for whatever reason. You saw me, and made me hot chocolate. When you saw that I wasn’t exactly okay, you hugged me until my breathing evened out and I was okay. After that, it became a routine for you to make hot chocolate every time I wasn’t doing so great. Sometimes we’d sit in silence, and sometimes I’d talk to you. But you were always there. I could always trust you.”
You smiled, realizing that you really were an incredibly nice person before HYDRA.
“So why haven’t you come to see me yet? Natasha’s been the most, except for the last few days. What’s been stopping you?”
He took a deep breath in,
“I came to apologize.”
“Apologize? What for?”
“I’m part of the reason this happened to you. I’m part of the reason you left.”
“Really? I thought that was Natasha. All I know is that something happened between her and me and she won’t tell me,”
“She did hurt you, through me if you think about it. I still hate myself for it. I’m so, so, sorry, Y/N. I don’t know what came over me, but all I know is that I would take it back if I could.”
“No. Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”
“I’m so sorry.”
He left as all the pain and emotion came to your chest. You could see your vision blurring as tears started to form.
“No,” you said softly, falling to your knees.
Your breathing got heavier as you practically crawled to the glass.
“Get me Natasha!” You cried, banging your fists against the wall. “I want Natasha here!”
Tears began to stream down your face as you continued banging. You weren’t sure how long it was like that, but she eventually came running.
F.R.I.D.A.Y. had alerted her that you were in distress and calling for you. She assumed you had somehow gotten hurt, especially since you were huddled on the floor.
She opened the door without hesitation and sat down next to you.
“I’m here,” she said gently.
“Tell me it’s not true,” you said, your voice breaking.
Her heart dropped.
“Tell me you didn’t make me think what we had was real, just for you to cheat on me with Bucky. Tell me you didn’t make me fall in love with you for it to be fake.”
“It wasn’t fake, Y/N. I did love you! I still do.”
You scooted away from her.
“Stop lying. Just tell me the truth; did you or did you not cheat on me with Bucky?”
She let out a few shaky breaths, feeling her own tears form.
“I did.” You let out a sob at her words. “I did and I regret it more than anything. I don’t know what came over me. All I know is that I want you and I wish I never did it,”
You let out a few more sobs as you cried harder.
Out of instinct, she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around you as you sobbed into her chest.
“No.” You told her. “Get away from me. I don’t want comfort from the person who’s the reason for my pain.”
She nodded, wiping her own tears away.
“Y/N, it was the biggest mistake of my life. I’ll never forgive myself for it, but I still love you so much. You’re everything to me,”
You stood up, your harsh glare meeting her once again.
“You were right, Natasha,” you said to her. “I am like Kara. Because just like her, I gave my heart to a lying jackass. Get out and get away from me.”
You weren’t sure why it hurt so bad. You hardly had any of your memories together. But part of you knew that you loved her. Part of your mind never stopped loving her, even while you couldn’t remember her.
Sobs escaped your body as you held your knees to your chest. Natasha hated seeing you like this. She hated it even more so because she was the reason for it.
She wanted nothing more than to comfort you and hold you until you felt better. But she knew she couldn’t.
As she took a step toward the door, she glanced at you one last time, wondering if she truly lost you forever.
-
Carol came by to see you after she saw both Natasha and Bucky sulking.
Like Natasha, she had no problem entering the cell and sitting by you. Steve had advised everyone to keep a safe distance from you as your memories were still primarily HYDRA. He wanted you to fully come back just as much as everyone else did, but he couldn’t risk the safety of the team.
But as soon as she saw your red eyes and tear-struck cheeks, she could give two shits about Steve’s warning.
She sat down next to you on the bed, gently putting a hand on your back to let you know that she was there.
You practically jumped into her arms, allowing yourself to cry once more as you clung onto her.
You sobbed into her chest for a few minutes as she slowly stroked your back.
“Sorry,” you muttered, pulling away from her. “I think I might’ve ruined your shirt,”
She gave a soft laugh, then wrapped an arm around you.
“Don’t worry about it,”
“Why’d she put so much effort into getting my memories back if she knew I would find out and get hurt all over again?”
Carol sighed, gently squeezing your shoulder.
“I think part of her hoped, and is still hoping, that you’d forgive her,”
You scoffed,
“Once a cheater, always a cheater. Even if I remember everything, I’m not getting back with her. God, no wonder I left in the first place,”
“We were all worried about you, y’know. You left without a word. Tony tracked your phone, and found it shattered on the street a few blocks from here. We thought it meant you didn’t want to be found.” She told you. “If we knew you had been taken by HYDRA, we never would’ve stopped looking,”
“What happened while I was gone?”
“We all knew it had something to do with Natasha. She always acted like she was fine, but her eyes were constantly red and puffy. We also heard crying from her bedroom. A week or so later, she blew up at Bucky in front of everyone, so we all found out,”
“What happened then?”
“We hated them for it. We wanted nothing to do with them. I glared at Natasha any chance I got. How could she do that to you? I lost my best friend because of her,”
You let out a sniffle, then looked up at her to see that she had started crying too.
“I’m sorry for leaving you,” you said, hugging her once again. “I don’t clearly remember it, I have bits and pieces. But I should’ve at least talked to you guys instead of leaving like that,”
“It’s okay. You’re here now, and I’m not giving up on you.”
-
A week later, to your own surprise, you had called for Natasha again.
Both Wanda and Peter had made individual visits to you. You were grateful for them as they hugged you tight.
Wanda had suggested that you talk to her one last time to get some closure. She also said that it could help with your memory.
You were reluctant to the idea at first, but eventually agreed as you realized that the memory process was getting you nowhere at this point.
So you stood by the glass, waiting.
When she arrived, she almost couldn’t believe that you wanted her there. She thought that maybe you just wanted to scream at her, but then she saw your calm and collected face.
“I only called you here ‘cause Wanda thinks getting some closure could help with the memories,” you explained right away. You didn’t want her thinking that you had forgiven her.
She nodded, biting her tongue to prevent herself from crying.
You pointed to the door, indicating that you wanted her to come in.
She nodded again, opening it and standing a few feet away from you, arms crossed.
“I just need some answers,”
“Okay,”
You inhaled deeply, closing your eyes. You balled your fists, feeling your nails against your palms.
“Why did you do it?”
“I wish I knew.”
“Oh come on, you have to at least give me more than that,”
“I’m sorry, Y/N, but I genuinely don’t know why I did it.”
“Then tell me how it happened,”
“Are you sure? You said that this could be helpful for your memories, but I don’t want this to cause you any more pain than you already have,”
“I’m sure. Just tell me,”
“Alright,” she let out a slow breath. “You were on your way back from a mission. I had been missing you, so I was staying up late so I could see you as soon as you landed.” Her voice began to shake, but you motioned for her to continue. “While I was waiting, I assumed I was the only one up. So I decided to pour myself a drink, since there was still about an hour and a half before you’d get back. Bucky ended up coming down a few minutes later, so I poured him a drink too.”
“Really? You’re using the drinking excuse?”
She didn’t reply to you, but continued anyway.
“Something didn’t feel right, physically. I wasn’t sure what it was, but I ignored it and instead focused on how I would be seeing you soon. After around 30 minutes, something really felt off. I was about to get up and try to do something about it, but he got up at the same time. One minute we were just standing there, the next we were kissing. I wasn’t sure what had come over me. I didn’t know why I was doing it, but I didn’t stop. After it happened, I felt sick about it; literally. My eyes had turned red, and I just felt so nauseous-”
“I remember that,” you interrupted her. “I remember you had red eyes and weren’t feeling good. I thought you had gotten a cold, so I took time off training to stay with you. Of course, it was just you feeling guilty about being a cheater,”
“I couldn’t face what I had done-”
You interrupted her again,
“Wait a minute, you said you had red eyes and something felt wrong while you were with Bucky, right?” You said, she nodded in response. “Did the drink taste normal?”
She shook her head no,
“It didn’t, but I didn’t really focus on that. I was busy thinking about seeing you again,”
“Who all has access to the drinks?” You asked, your heart rate quickening.
“What are you talking about?”
“Just, take me to the security room and let’s look at the tapes for around that time, but a bit before,”
She wasn’t sure where you were going with this, but she opened the door anyway.
“You’re not gonna restrain my powers?” You asked as you had made it around halfway down the hall.
She shrugged,
“I don’t think you’re gonna hurt me or anyone here,”
You returned her shrug, then walked ahead of her until you reached the security room.
Once you arrived, you smiled, realizing that you had made it there on your own from your memories of this place.
You sat down in front of a computer, and began typing away at the security tapes.
“There’s a missing one, a few hours before,”
She turned her head in confusion.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y.” she said, “Do everything you can to retrieve this file,”
“Right away, Miss Romanoff,”
“If I’m right then…” you began, but didn’t finish. You didn’t want to get your hopes up.
A few minutes later, F.R.I.D.A.Y. found the deleted file.
You pressed play, showing what had happened that day.
The HYDRA agent had memorized everyone’s schedule. The majority of the most powerful Avengers were currently on a mission, and the others were training; so this was the window.
He had hotwired a car Tony had left at a bar parking lot, when he was too drunk to drive and had to be taken home by a taxi, and then forgetting about the car altogether.
The agent used this to pull in without security questioning it.
He made his way to the back of the building, then spotted a slightly cracked window. He used that as his opportunity, reaching his hands under to fully open it up.
Once he climbed in, he then went to the kitchen.
Due to training schedules and timing, it was likely that no one would be drinking tonight except for the target.
So he took the bottle, opened it, then sprinkled a powder into it.
He then closed it, and put it back where he left it before leaving the room and coming to erase his tracks.
“HYDRA’s told us about that powder before and the effects of it, it makes you susceptible to suggestion. They’ve modified it so they can give specific commands just from taking it.”
“So what does that mean,”
“They knew we were together, they knew I had powers. They knew I’d be devastated if you cheated, and hoped that maybe I’d leave.” You started, staring at her with a mixed expression. “It’s starting to come back to me, the fire alarms had gone off that night. That was their signal that it had worked, and I was hurt. They took that to their advantage, and found me in my devastated state and took me.”
“What are you saying, Y/N?”
You smiled. It was the same smile you used to give her before everything happened. You took a step toward her and cupped her cheeks.
“You didn’t cheat.”
-
Your moment was short lived as you instantly fell to your knees, hands around your head.
Everything was coming back to you now.
“It’s pathetic, and never gonna happen!”
“Oh come on, you guys aren’t gonna actually freeze the room, right?”
“Oh my gosh, um- it’s not what it sounds like! I promise, it’s-”
“You should watch Supergirl with me,”
“Can you not go easy on your girlfriend during training?”
“Of course I’ll be your personal heater,”
“Natasha… I love you. I really do. It’s okay if you don’t wanna say it back, but I thought you should know.”
“My beautiful sunset,”
“You’re my home,”
“Natty,” it was the first time using that nickname since you’d been back here. “Natty, I remember everything now,”
She bent down to you, running a hand through your hair.
To say she was relieved was an understatement; she had just found out that the biggest mistake of her life wasn’t even her fault, that she didn’t betray you like she thought she had. And, the love of her life had finally completely come back to her.
You instantly began crying, leaning your forehead against hers, wrapping your arms around her neck.
Without thinking, you crashed your lips onto hers. It wasn’t a pretty kiss by any means; it was desperate, and wet with tears. But neither of you seemed to care.
“I love you so much,” you said between kisses. “I’m so sorry for everything I said to you.”
“It’s okay, you didn’t know, no one did,” she wrapped her arms even tighter. “I love you too.”
If either of you had been thinking straight, you would have alerted the team that you had gotten your memories back and didn’t need to be locked up anymore.
But you weren’t. All that was on either of your minds was making up for lost time.
She picked you up effortlessly, holding you tight. You wrapped your legs around her waist, keeping your lips on her skin.
She carried you all the way back to her (and now yours once again) room.
Once she set you on the bed, she reconnected your lips in a messy but meaningful kiss.
She crawled on top of you, planting kisses everywhere.
“I love you,” you told her again.
“And I love you,”
And those were all the words either of you needed right now as you continued showing each other just how much you loved and missed one another.
-
Hours later, you lay on the bed completely wrapped around her. Your face was buried in her neck as your limbs tangled with each other.
You both shot straight up at a knock to her door.
“Natasha,” came the voice of Steve. “Y/N’s missing.”
“About that…” she said. “There’s a lot I need to tell you guys.”
She hopped off the bed, keeping her hand connected with yours.
You met Steve’s worried eyes when she opened the door, tightening your grip on Natasha.
The conversation with the team ended up going well. Everyone apologized for how they had been toward Natasha and Bucky after learning that it wasn’t their fault.
And of course, they were ecstatic that you were back.
Carol, Wanda and Peter, ran toward you and all tried to hug you at once, resulting in a dog pile. Eventually, everyone else joined too, only making the pile bigger.
You met Bucky’s eyes, and gave him a smile. He seemed relieved, then smiled back at you.
The rest of the day, everyone continued making sure you were okay, and Tony had already started a plan for finding that HYDRA agent.
Bruce wanted to do a checkup, which you agreed to. Natasha held your hand the entire time, which made it a lot harder for him to do what he needed to. Despite this, he couldn’t bring himself to tell her to stop. You had both suffered so much these past few months, so if you wanted to hold hands right now, then so be it.
“Y’know,” Natasha began, pulling you into her lap. “We haven’t had a proper date in so long. Obviously it’s too late to go anywhere, but we can have a night in and watch last week's episode of Supergirl if you’d like. I haven’t watched it since the last time, and I really have missed my favorite blanket. So, what do you think?”
You turned around, kissing her instantly. It was a long, deep, needed kiss. You couldn’t get enough of each other now that you were back.
Once you pulled apart for air, she smirked at you.
“So I’ll take that as a yes, then?”

I’ve seen a couple posts about how everyone was wildly out of character and totally inconsistent this season and I’m just like... were you guys paying attention?
1. Luther
Arguably the biggest shift in character between the two seasons, but it makes sense. Luther spent a year fending for himself and thinking his entire family was dead.
This is the first time in his life that he had to hold down a job and actually live on his own. It was literally his first time living out in the world among anyone other than his family, and you can see in his reactions with the other characters from that life (the boss, his landlord, those kids that idolize him, and the waitress) that it has really mellowed him out. It has allowed him to be more normal, despite being very much not normal. You can see the way he’s so much more comfortable in his skin. Literally the only times he looks uncomfortable is when he’s fighting people, shirt off and body on full display. He’s still not comfortable with that, but he’s not trying to hide under huge overcoats anymore. He has people in his life who accept him for being a little weird, but really do treat him normal.
So is he a little less uptight and mission focused? Yeah. Because he can finally see another life, and it’s the life that he honestly did want in season 1 but felt like he couldn’t have because he was number 1 and he had a responsibility to his dad, his family, and the academy to be the leader. Having a year on his own frees him of all that.
But he also spent all that time thinking his family was dead and feeling so guilty about it. You can see in his very first interaction with Vanya, where he suddenly feels that responsibility again. He brings a gun, not knowing what’s going to happen and, despite what he told Five, he absolutely does still have that lingering feeling of responsibility. But then he sees Vanya and she’s not a threat and everything he has been holding in for the last year comes out. Because he does feel guilty as hell for what he did to Vanya, but also for the fact that his actions pushed her into causing the apocalypse. He spent a year with the knowledge that he did that and thinking that his family was dead because of his actions.
He’s willing to listen now because he spent a year living in a world where his actions killed his whole family. And now he finds out that that didn’t happen and he has a second chance. Of course he’s going to take it!
2. Diego
In the first season, Diego finally admitted that he wanted to be close to his family and that he cared about them and wouldn’t leave them again. He confronted the guilt about leaving, which he had previously denied. He realized the difference between revenge and honoring someone’s memory. But despite all that, he never confronted the reason why he, a grown-ass-man, wandered around the city as a leather clad, mask wearing vigilante.
So when we see Diego show up in 1963, that’s still who he is. He wants to be that hero and he finds an answer for how to be that hero in the first several minutes that he’s there. So he takes it. I mean, what else is he going to do? His family is gone. Maybe they’ll show up again. Maybe this is it. Either way, he’s on his own like he was before, so he’s got a duty to be the hero he has chosen to be.
And then he meets his dad again. Everyone keeps telling him he has daddy issues, and they’re right. He absolutely has daddy issues. He’s still trying to simultaneously prove that he’s good enough for his dad, but also doesn’t need Daddy’s approval. Except he does need it. He still desperately craves it and he feels gutted when his dad denies him that approval, even falling back into the stutter he had as a kid.
Now, despite the way we joke, Diego is not dumb. He is so observant and he makes some of the most poignant statements about his siblings and the way they see the world. He sees the people around them and he understands them, but he has never been able to completely turn that gift inwards and see those same things in himself. In this season, Lila breaks through all that and he finally sees himself in her at the end.
“Do you know how hard it is to trust people when your whole childhood was bullshit manipulation? Then why would you do that to me?”
Diego sees himself in Lila, in her failure to break away from her mother despite the fact that he knows she wants to. In the final episode, he sees that she is just like the rest of the siblings, but she doesn’t have to be. None of them have to be stuck with their daddy issues, because they have each other. They can support and care for each other. It’s the last step of the growth he started in season 1, moving beyond his tendency to define his life and his family through their father.
3. Allison
Throughout season 1, Allison struggled with whether or not to use her powers, but it was all centered around getting back to her daughter. When she appears in 1961, that motivation is effectively removed. She thinks everyone else is dead. She thinks that she is stranded in the past and that she will never get back. She finds a group of people to support her and before long... she finds her voice again.
It’s no coincidence that Allison’s first spoken words in the series come right after she gives Ray that pamphlet with a bunch of added notes. She finds her voice in the civil rights movement. She finds her power there. She finds a way to help change the world, to change reality, and she does it without her powers.
This is something she struggled with through the entirety of season 1, feeling inadequate for using her powers to get what she wanted, not knowing if anything was real or earned. Now she has the chance to earn everything without those powers and she is thriving.
And then she is forced to use her powers again. It all turns out fine, but now she’s showing off and experiencing all over again how good it feels to have power. She spent two years in a world where she was denied equal treatment, where she could be arrested and assaulted for any reason those with more power came up with. And now she feels that power... She doesn’t have to wait for people to give her respect. She can demand it. But the pain is still there, and it’s not enough to just be respected, because these people have hurt her. They almost killed her husband. They have used their power to cause pain to her and all those who look like her time and time again and now it’s time to understand what it’s like to be powerless, to be hurt and to be unable to stop it and...
And it’s scary. It’s scary to have that much power, to see how you could become the kind of person who uses your power to hurt others. And she knows that her power has hurt people she loves and suddenly she’s right back where she started.
Only not entirely.
She doesn’t shy away from her powers in the final fight. She is obviously still finding that balance and I would expect this struggle to continue for her in future seasons. Power can be addicting and Allison’s power is so strong. She knows the danger there, but she also knows that sometimes it’s needed despite the danger.
4. Klaus
Klaus is an addict. He finds obsessions to bury himself in to avoid dealing with reality. In season 1, he buried himself in drugs and booze. When he shows up in the 60′s, he finds a new drug to bury himself in: adoration.
Klaus is so impulsive and it’s not difficult to connect the dots of how one thing leads to another until suddenly everything is out of his control. Honestly, that’s the story of Klaus’s life, no matter where he goes. And then something changes. He gets tired of his cult and leaves. Except... that’s not really the reason.
After all this time, Dave is still the love of his life, and he knows he has an opportunity. He knows where Dave will be at this one time and he knows exactly what he has to change to keep Dave alive.
He also knows that Ben is going to have thoughts about this.
I know some people were disappointed that there wasn’t more Klaus and Ben bonding this season, but it makes sense that there is tension there. I think a lot of that tension comes from Ben’s circumstances, which I’ll discuss later, but Klaus is also not responding to that tension well.
They are fighting more than ever (not that they ever didn’t fight in season 1, where they spent much of their time being snarky to each other and Ben literally punching Klaus in the face for being an asshole), but the fighting is about something new this season. Ben wants his own life and Klaus is not in a position to give Ben what he really wants. We also learn that he has been carrying around this guilt for the last 17 years about forcing Ben to stick around as a ghost. He forced this half-life on his brother and now that it’s not enough for Ben, Klaus doesn’t want to deal with it. So he avoids and deflects and snarks and we see the toll on their relationship. We see it in the way he tries to deal with his plans around Dave entirely on his own. He focuses so much into that last ditch effort. He’s already in such a low place before this, so when that fails, we see him snap. We see him give up and crumble. And Ben falls back to his old role, trying to save Klaus from himself.
But the tension isn’t gone and Klaus’s guilt isn’t gone. We see it again when Klaus finally agrees to let Ben possess him. Klaus has always been afraid of his powers and being possessed is just as terrifying a thought as being surrounded by the dead. And yet he gives Ben that chance. It’s the last good thing he can do at that point.
I do wish we had gotten more closure for Klaus and Ben’s story. I think Vanya’s reveal could have been given a little more time, but that’s not really a problem with inconsistent characterization, so we’ll save that for another post.
5. Five
OK, who would argue that Five was out of character or inconsistent? He’s obsessed with stopping the apocalypse, is willing to cross a lot of lines to save his family, and constantly frustrated by his family’s failure to go along with his plans. This is textbook Five.
What I loved about this season was that we got to see Five finally meeting his father again. They interact as two adults, not as a child trying to find away to become his own person, frustrated by a lack of trust from his father. It allows Reggie to see Five in a different light and to actually provide advice in a constructive way, something he has almost never been able to do when viewing them as his children. But despite outward appearances and despite the fact that Five is a grown man, he still sees his father the same way he always has. He doesn’t register Reggie’s advice as advice. He hears that he’s striving beyond his abilities and that maybe he can only travel in seconds. He hears his father telling him he can’t handle time travel. That’s why he doesn’t try to actually take the very good advice until the very end.
An old dog can still occasionally learn a new trick and Five proves that true.
6. Ben
As I mentioned earlier, Ben is chaffing at his ghosthood. Maybe it’s because Klaus has been sober enough to keep Ben around solidly for 3 years. Maybe it’s because Ben is no longer spending all his time trying to keep Klaus alive and sober. Or maybe it’s the fact that he has finally found someone that he actually wants to spend time with. Whatever the reason, Ben wants to be alive this season.
Again, as I mentioned, that’s causing some tension. Ben doesn’t want to be tied to Klaus, but Klaus is ignoring that because he feels so guilty about it. Ben doesn’t want to admit that he was too scared to go into the light on his own, so they’re at a bit of a standstill.
And then Ben gets the opportunity to be alive again, if only for a while. And in a lot of ways, it’s wonderful! But it’s not the same as being truly alive.
So when the time comes, when he’s faced with that light again... he’s not afraid. He knows that it’s time to move on. He knows this isn’t where he should be, but he also got the chance to be there for his family. He misses them, but he got to talk to Diego and Vanya. He got to save Vanya. He got to save Allison and Diego and Klaus and Luther and Five and the whole world! So while he would have stayed, he’s not sad about leaving anymore, and he’s not afraid.
7. Vanya
OK, she was a little out of character because... you know. She had amnesia.
But aside from erasing her past, the amnesia allowed us to see Vanya without the anger and resentment that plagued her for all of season one. Vanya was always someone who was kind and loving, someone who cares enough to leave peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches out for a missing brother for years. Someone who knows the pain of not being seen and who will always take the time to truly see other people. She’s someone who wants to love and to be loved and to protect those she loves.
That was all here, with or without the memories. And as soon as the memories came back, so did the guilt and fear about what she had done, what she had become, terrified of what was inside her in a way that she was not when her powers first surfaced. But Ben is used to being afraid of what’s inside of him. He knows she’s not a monster and is the perfect person to explain that to her. And this time around, she has experienced the love and care and attention of her siblings (and Sissy) to back up those words. That’s how she finally accepts them as truth, how she finally accepts her power as a part of her.
Overall, there are things that I wish this season spent more time with, but there was nothing that I felt was out of character or wildly inconsistent. The characters still struggled with all the baggage from their shitty childhood, their fear of their powers, and the guilt in their past. Some struggled in new ways this season and some continued old struggles that had never fully been resolved. The season felt very different than the first, but it still felt like the Umbrella Academy. It was a good mix of new and old and a good mix of feel-good moments we have all been waiting for and frustrating and sad moments that just come with having a complicated family. I loved this season. And now, I’m going to go re-watch every episode.

Things that Husband!Harry would definitely do (a thread)
Tumblr media
(If you don’t think that Tiny Desk Harry doesn’t give off mad husband!harry vibes - he looks so fluffy- then we can’t be friends)
- He’d sneak into your room the night before the wedding because he missed you even though he knows its bad luck and when you’re mad at him for it he would just smile and place a kiss on your forehead and say “I don’t need any luck, I just need you”
- At your wedding reception he would walk around the room introducing you to everyone as “my wife” as if they didn’t already know who you were
- During your wedding dinner he’d spend the whole night whispering dirty jokes in your ear trying to make you laugh because he knew that even though it was your wedding day you were still spooked by all of the attention
- On your first year anniversary Harry wanted to surprise you by making you breakfast in bed so he started making pancakes as you slept. You woke up to the sound of your fire alarm going off and Harry blowing the smoke off a pan with a pillow. He’d give you a sheepish smile before mumbling a “maybe we get takeout this year?”
- During the holidays he’d hang mistletoe all around your house and force you to kiss him at every one. “Look love it’s mistletoe, you know what that means” he’d state with a grin. “Harry I just kissed you literally 2 minutes ago in the other room” you’d grumble “Doesn’t matter love, it’s mistletoe and those are the rules. Now come here and kiss your husband”
- Anytime the two of you would get into any sort of major fight where you would say “I hate you” he would shoot back “Well I love you so I guess you’re stuck with me” before going to sulk on the couch
- Whenever you went to his shows or stayed with him on tour he would force you to sit back stage and watch him from the wings so he could watch your reaction to his corny jokes and steal a kiss from you in between sets and on his bathroom breaks
- You agreed to be the designated drive for your group for a night out so Harry gets drunk and becomes extra clingy. He spends the entire night stuck to your side, shoving his face in your neck whispering “I’m going to marry you one day” to which you’d remind him quietly that you were already married. He’d then nod thoughtfully and mumbled “Well then I’m going to marry you again just in case”
- One night you would be tossing and turning in bed unable to sleep and you would accidentally wake up Harry. You’d apologies because you knew he had to wake up early the next day, but he would just shush you with a quick peck before repositioning you so that you could lay your head on his chest. He’d then softly start humming the tune to one of the new songs he was working on until you’d fall asleep
- Harry would convince you that he was capable of building the Ikea coat rack the two of you had bought for your new home on his own so you’d go into the room next door to take a nap. When you woke up and hour later you found him laying on the floor facetiming Mitch as he tried to figure out why the last piece wasn’t fitting properly only for you to look at it and realize he had built half of it backwards
- Harry would come home late from one his movie shoots and would mumble a quick hello as he walked in through the door. You’d be sitting on the couch watching and episode of Dateline and he would throw himself next to you and lay his head on your lap. You’d start running your hands through his hair as you finished watching the last couple of minutes of the episode before asking Harry how his day was only to realize he had passed out on your lap and was now quietly snoring, a small trail of drool slowly coming out of his mouth
- The next season of your favorite show Handmaid’s Tale had come out so you and Harry started watching it. Every five minutes Harry would ask you a question about the show until mid way through you looked at him and bursted out “Harry if you ask me one more question about the show I’m sending you to our room”. Harry would pout at you and sink into the couch, grumbling about how it wasn’t his fault he couldn’t remember what happened last season before he shoved some popcorn into his mouth
- You’d need to go shopping at Target one day to get some decorations for your niece's birthday party and Harry would decide to come along. “This is our list Harry, we’re not buying anything that’s not on the list” you’d say in the car before getting out, but it would be hopeless because every other aisle Harry would pick something up and say “babe we need to get this” and you would stare at him and say “is it on the list?” and he would grumble a no before sulking back down the aisle to put it back
- On road trips when he let you pick the music he would grumble when you would change the song every 30 seconds. “Love just choose a song, it’s not that difficult, gave you the bloody playlist” he’d state as you would continue to skip through the songs mumbling “I’m tired of that song though, just wanted to hear the chorus”. “Is that what you do with my songs too, just skip all the good parts to get to the bloody chorus?” he’d ask mockingly as you gave him a sheepish smile and mumbled a “sometimes” before finally picking a song
- It would be nearly 4 am and you would still be awake reading your book in bed as Harry slept soundly next to you. You could feel the tears running down your face as the main character just had their heartbroken and a soft sniffle left your nose which caused Harry to startle awake. “Babe what time is it?” he’d mumble as you continue reading, paying him no mind. He’d turn on his phone and groan as he saw the 4 flash at him before turning to see the tears on your face. “Oh no love did she get her heartbroken again? Sure they’ll get back together by the end” he’d state, knowing this was your third rom-com book of the month. You’d mumble a yes as Harry gently dog eared the page before you could protest. He turned off your lamp before tucking you into his side, pulling the covers up to your chin, letting you crying into his chest over your fictional characters
- You and Harry going to your 15th high school reunion together and he gets jealous when he sees you talking to your ex-boyfriend from when you were 16. He’d come up behind you and wrap an arm around your waist while placing a kiss to the side of your temple before reaching out his free hand to introduce himself. “Hello I’m Harry. The Husband” he’d say as he shook your ex’s hand just a little tighter then necessary
- Harry would be overly invested in your work place gossip so when the two of you would have dinner together he would constantly ask questions about what happened with your coworkers that day. “So did Stacy and Justin get caught yet or does Janet still have no idea? Did Kathleen ever get that promotion? If I ever see Garrett I’m going to punch him”
-  He’d force you to wake up early with him so the two of you could workout together in your home gym, but you’d just sit on the floor against the mirror in your workout clothes staring at him. After several attempts at trying to get you to stretch with him he’d give up and say “If you’re not gonna workout at least give me some motivation babe” so he’d do his abs workout in front of you and every time he came up from a sit-up you’d give him a kiss
- Harry would come down with a cold and he would turn into a 5 year old boy and try to milk it for everything it’s worth. “Think the doctor mentioned that cuddles would really help with my headache, love.” “Harry I don’t think that’s what the doctor said” you’d reply as you placed a cold wash cloth on his forehead. “Don’t think I would have forgotten such an important order from her. Now, come here I want to cuddle my wife”
- He’d come home from the studio fidgeting with his beat-up blue iPod in his hand as you were finishing up a quick dinner for the two of you. He would gently place the iPod on the counter next to you as he poured himself a drink to calm his nerves. You’d stare at it for a minute before asking “Is it finished? Can I listen?”. He’d nod before you gave him a quick kiss and took the device to the living room, leaving him there with his thoughts. An hour later you came back into the kitchen, tears streaming down your face as you ran up to hug him. “Liked it?” he’d ask nervously, this being the first time you’d heard the finished album. “Absolutely loved it” you’d whisper back causing Harry to release a deep breath before taking your face in his hands and kissing you roughly
- He’d start every award acceptance speech with “I’d like to first thank my wife for always supporting me” and then try to catch your eye in the crowd, giving you a soft smile that was only meant for you before going on to thank everyone else
- “We need an intervention Harry. Why are your suits in my side of the closet?” you asked as you came down stairs with one of Harry’s Gucci suits. “I was running out of space and I didn’t think you would notice” he replied with a blush. “Well I did so either you move them or I’m throwing them out” “Love but they’re Gucci you can’t just-” “Ah ah ah I don’t care. My side of the closet” you’d state before dropping the suit in his lap and walking back upstairs
So many others come to mind but these are just a couple that came to mind. I’ll probably do a Dad!Harry version at some point as well

FATE’S CHOICE
So the new and final episode of this half of the season is dropping tomorrow and I think we can all agree that Zatara probably isn’t gonna make it out the other end… which poses the question, who will doan the helmet? Personally I think it’ll be Khalid since I’ve heard he has worn the helmet in the comics, he’s a relative of Kent Nelson and there was that odd moment with zatanna when she remarked on how he wasn’t a doctor yet but would be someday — is she meaning a doctor of medicine or fate?
Though that isn’t actually what my mind is stuck on. See Nabu is a really interesting character because he is not as detached from feeling as is perceived. Obviously what he’s put zatara and by extension zatanna through over the ten years by trapping the elder is horrible and torturous. As zatara has said, he’s literally Nabu's prisoner, and seeing the effect it’s had on him is truly heartbreaking. But what actually drove him to make that decision? He was betrayed.
See, when Kent was the keeper of the helmet, there was clearly no bargain made to such a scale as only being allowed one hour of freedom every year. He was seemingly free to wear the helmet as he wished - with no fear of consequences. (This may not be entirely true, I’m no Fate expert, but you get the gist.) There was trust between the two. Trust which was effectively shattered when Kent shelved the helmet for 65 years because that’s what his wife wanted. Here nabu is the one being denied his freedom as Kent traps him away without considering how that might affect him. Let’s not forget, nabu wasn’t always a lord of order, he was human once and died because his father didn’t trust his judgment and let klarion cause chaos again. In death he may have gained great power - but like the genie of the lamp - he’s cursed with isolation as he waits for someone else to free him. Even for him that’s got to mess with your psyche.
When I was watching DENIAL for one of my klarion posts, I noticed a line from nabu that I never had before, one which has always stuck with me since. As Kent explains why Wally isn’t the right candidate for the role of Fate, nabu says, “True, but I don’t not appreciate being permanently hidden away, useless and isolated, for decades at a time…” There’s something incredibly heartfelt in the way he stresses both “useless” and “isolated”. He takes a slight pause with them, they have genuine emotion behind them as the humanity slips through into his voice, a softness which he quickly takes attention off of to snap about chaos not being allowed to reign victorious. (His way of totally changing the subject to get it off him). It matters to him that he’s locked away unable to do anything - but he doesn’t push beyond reason. He accepts releasing Wally on the condition of Kent keeping him company for a few millennia - which isn’t unreasonable since Kent’s dead in the physical world at this point. He also allows Kaldur to be released despite his being more magically compatible as a host body - it doesn’t even sound like any bargain was made to benefit nabu in any way. He just accepts Kent’s arguments. Those aren’t the actions of someone evil and selfish - it shows too much understanding.
The reason he snaps once we get to zatanna isn't just because of her strong magical ability. It’s because this is the third time he’s been called on to help the heroes save humanity from a villainous problem they couldn’t solve. It’s because klarion just nearly destroyed things again, risking the balance of everything. It’s because Wally swore to find a good use for Nabu and instead shelved the helmet away as some trinket and would have never seen him released again if he had his way. Nabu put his trust in Wally and in Kaldur, as he did with Kent to be treated with the same respect as everyone else - and not a one trick pony who will solve all your problems with a click of the fingers. So yes, he snaps and he becomes selfish - getting rid of his reason by sending Kent’s spirit away, imprisoning zatara in exchange for his daughter’s freedom, and no longer trusting anyone with controlling who wears the helmet. He gives zatara one hour a year because he doesn’t trust the man to not break the agreement like all those before him. He’s lost his trust in humanity, so he’s punishing them through zatara, who knows the world needs Dr. Fate and wouldn’t attempt breaking his word for that reason.
The thing is, whilst the world needs Dr. Fate, Dr. Fate also needs the world and the people in it to gain the freedom he desires. That is what he has forgotten and with the help of zatara, the seeds of understanding seem to finally be getting planted in his brain. Dr. Fate isn’t a single being - it’s a partnership - a body and a spirit working in harmony to create order. It could thrive or be over in an instant - as examples by zataras accelerated aging - to which they’ve both lost, the host's body will be no more and no one would ever choose to wear the helmet knowing what happened to the previous wearer. Nabu has a choice to make if he’s going to avoid being shelved again, or even just achieve a partnership which thrives instead of boils into nothing. He needs to regain his trust in humanity again. He needs to understand you must show trust to receive trust in return. He must choose to allow the host their own freedom and trust they will return to grant him his - which they must respect also if they too wish to avoid the problems of the past. All of which can be solve with communication… guess we’ll see what happens.

S3 ep5
Current emotional status: FEAR
Cthulu Max has been on the rampage for a whole week!?
Ew, the narrator
Oh man, are they sending the airforce after him?
I really like Cthulu Max's design
Momma Bosco 💗
Oh hey, Norrington and Papierwaite are alive.
Superball are you saying you tried to send the Maimtrons up Max's--
Also he's acting president while Max is... deposed of.
Superball is only giving Sam until 6am :(
Featherly!
"Wandering around the moleman tunnels is no fun without Max."
"You got it all wrong, we're trying to help Max." "We will help him... to a generous serving of ass whooping."
"That is one rabbit who will be multiplied... into 2,000 smoldering pieces."
Carol ran off with Blustet
"I only want her to be happy, is all." Aw, Curt
Superball just admitted to having separation anxiety from Max
Ok Momma can't come but Papierwaite and Norringron can.
I like Norrington :)
GASP
Is it?
It is!
SYBIL!!!!
RETURN OF THE QUEEN
Oh, she is very pregnant
She was a wizard at one point?
She's gonna help!
Superball there's no such thing as acceptable losses
Abe has his body back
"Four score and seven tons of raw power"
HE CAN FLY NOW!?
Sybil, I love you, but why did you mod someone else's car???
Grandpa Stinky I love you
Oh, he just handed us the recipe for once.
Asdfff the spore maxes swarming Grandpa
They stole Grandpa's hotdogs
"We must feed the host! Piglets and sphinkters make us stronger!" "We regret nothing!"
Grandpa hasn't slept in three years
Sam just casually taking the last of Grandpa's corndogs
The spores are trying to get it
Lol Sam slapped them
Sal's alive!
He's hiding from Sam :(
Lol we can control Cthulu Max with Corndogs
Ew, the cornstarch got mixed in with the giant puddle 🤢 Looks gross
Love how Sybil completely ignores the Flaming Max head
Also the look of disappointment on the spore's face made me laugh
Fifth trimester???
The way the one Max spore by Grandpa's truck is bobbing in circles with his mouth open is making me laugh.
Sam showing concern for Sybil because she’s preggers 🥺
Her being pregnant with Abe's child implies that statues have working genital in this universe
She put a weiner scented airfreshener in the desoto
At least Sam and a Max spore seem to like that (of course they do)
"Sybil you're the best!" Hell yeah she is!
Sam's mind went to the color bar codes to prevent being traumatized by Sybil's oversharing
We drowned the desoto
Asdfgh Sam just botched slapped one of the spores for trying to say "that's none of your damn buisness."
Ew, Max's spine is pointing out
Oh hey, Satan and Jurgen
Why is Jurgen wearing his old fashioned clothes instead of his emo clothes?
Lol Sam snuck into frame to shout "Go Mets! New York rules!"
"--besides it's just a good and noble thing to do." "You're not familiar with my previous work, are you?"
"Sam, what happened to you to make you so cynical?" Gee, Jurgen, I wonder what could have possibly happened.
Oh so the water tower counts as vegetable oil because Momma did something to it
Pfft we can replace Satan's microphone with a corndog
Omg they jumped off the building to avoid Max
Oh, they're fine, and the oil is in the giant puddle.
I'm thankful to Featherly for giving us an egg but I'd have preferred not to watch him lay it. Granted it was just in a cartoon way but he still made weird noises
Also TRANS FEATHERLY 2021
"I desperately wanted to see that, sir. Ask him if he'll lay another one."
Oh hey, the Flaming Max heads helped heat up the giant desoto corndog
Since I'm playing this in 2021 the Maimtron's song references are super dated, which defeats Superball's efforts
Oooh! A unique opening sequence???
Oh this music is jazzy af
Sam really doesn't like the Max spores
Sam how do you already know what Max's insides look like???
"Even when he's not a collasal monster Max's food comas can last for weeks."
Ok we wake Max up with the coffee beans, right?
Yup!
The gi Max spore is so sad he doesn't get to come 😢
"But I'm a horrible monster!"
"I suppose Max's brain always looks like a living room?" "Well, Max is host to all kinds of weird parasites, and he likes to he a good host!" WHAT
No really, this brings up so many questions about lagomorphs. Are they some kind of Symbiote or something?
And a previous episode confirmed Max is amphibious
Max has tumors!!!
It shocked Sam!
"Eugh! Get away fake Max!" "Do you find my warmth... alarming, Sam?"
"What do nightmares taste like, anyway?" "Pepsi"
Max wants to be author 💗
He also writes fanfiction about Flint 🤣
I'd unironically read his books.
Tina Belcher voice: Friend fiction
Max has an experimental fusion jazz band???
"He just killed a great white shark--"
Max being completely unable to describe a woman is very gay of him. Good for him.
Max's brain teleported everyone to different parts of the body.
Found Sybil in the gym/legs
The brain is broadcasting Sam's thoughts???
Sam couldn't think of a joke for the medicine balls :(
"Wow Max is looking pretty buff. Would it be too weird if I asked him to turn around?"
Sam! Stop thinking bad things about Sybil's pregnancy she can hear you you putz!
She's upset with him now
"Can you believe this guy?" "I find the entire situation to be very contrived and misogynistic." Same spore Max, same.
Sam stop being so mean omg!
"I changed Sybil, I totally get the whole parenthood thing now." "Really now?" "Tax deductions."
In Max's inventory now
Y'know, I never really thought about it as a storage house
Hit The Road reference :3
Baby roach hatched in
"Pa..papa?" "Now I am little champion, now I am!"
Max has a Maximus shrine
Sam turned into a roomba!
Aw, he named it Sam Jr 🥺
We won Sybil back through his love of Sam Jr
Found the conjoined twins
Huh, Max lost as eye. Does that mean he has a glass one, or do lagomorphs have regenerative abilities?
Pfft we have to play twister to control his arma
The brain is messing with things again
Oh, we need a roach to operate the game because of radiation
Well, let's kidnap Sal
Oh, poor Girl Stinky. She's really going through it
Aw, Sal feels bad
Sal?
Honey, are alright?
He's dying???
He's not immune to irradiation!?
Oh no, he's gone
I'm so sad 😞
Gotta pick up Sam Jr. Before I control Max
They mad Max do a magical girl pose
Ugh the narrator is back
Wait, what?
He's Max's brain??? SUPEREGO???
WHAT
"I was always ignored" Yo if my super ego was as pretentious as you I 'd ignore it too 😤
He wants to kill himself and Max???
I know Max had a self loathing complex but holy shit
The super ego is perfectly fine with destroying half the east coast what a jerk
Just noticed Sam's tie is red. Had no idea about this while drawing PI!Sam lol
We have to help Max get his memories back to use the ASTRO projector
Skunkapes has three Sam clones imprisoned
Sam had canon ocd?
Gasp Gordon???
No, it's Sammun Mak
I love him, little child tyrant
Just make him a mobile brain in a jar and let Sam and Max adopt him
Why is Grandpa here?
He isn't talking like Stinky
Too polite
Sam sees it too
He's a space gorilla
They switched brains?
Found the cloning g chamber
Let's go to Momma's first
CONE OF SHAME CONE OF SHAME CONE OF SHAME
Superball is "wracked with guilt"
"Keep it together Superball. Sam will be able to save the day. He always does."
Ok, let's go to the cloning facility
I'm still thinking about poor Sal yo
FLIIIIIINT!
He's punching space apes!
Girl Stinky really playing up the evil Mistress role
The doggleganger has a bomb on him!!!
Wait so Girl really is a mermaid??? I thought that was just her aestetic
God I love Flint
Haha we tricked Skunkape with scooby doo villain tactics
Got the robot
Her water broke... and it was pennies
Max wants to save Sybil! 😭🥺💕
Super Ego is here
Oh now he wants to save Max
The only thing here are those records
Super Ego waved goodbye
Cthulu Max is cute when he cries
Wait What?
His head is on fire!
The maimtron hit him!
He waved goodbye... and teleported away.
He exploaded!!!!
He promised he'd take Sam with him and he didn't!!!!
AAAAAAH
I thought the dead Max thing was popular angst fanon fic thingy!
We're cloning Max?
It didn't work 😭😭😭😭😭
Superball ran off crying
Oh God the credits are just Sam walking sadly what the hell
He's not even stopping to fight any crime 😢
💔💔💔
God the way he's clinging to himself
What?
The elevator???
MAAAAX
he's back???
Past Max???
He blew his Sam up???
Wait hold on I'm glad they're together again but this doesn't fix anything
There's so much trauma from this season
All the horrible things that happened during 301-304 happened in like 3 days tops, then Sam had to deal with Max being a monster for a week before watching him die!
And the new (?) Max had BLOW HIS SAM UP!!!
And they left the franchise like that for a decade????
What the hell?
I want to be happy but this shit is going to consume my brain for the next week at least what the hell
Aaaaaaah!
Like maybe they really do just brush it off but it feels unlikely
I know Max has a connection with his other selves so it'll be easier for him to adjust but certainly Sam is going to notice the discrepancies since he doesn't get the same deal
Someone told me there were multiple endings hold on
Aw, they walked off into the sunrise together
But still
AAAAAAAAH
