keep thinking how interesting it would've been if instead of a vague acknowledgement of peggy letting hydra into shield they would've actually committed to it and revealed she had been helping them the entire time, maybe even that she had been a double agent during the war and nobody finding out till decades later in catws like i would at least love to see this in fic bc how horrifed would steve be not bc she was the "love of his life" but because he did to an extent know her and trust that they were on the same side so to find out otherwise would make the discovery that he hadn't in fact stopped hydra as he believed even more painful

Ch. 8: To the End of the Line

Warnings: slight angst, mentions of loss and being put in the hospital
Steve figured his girlfriend had enough of the battlefield for now, and he was happy she was getting the rest and recovery her body needed. As much as he wanted Elsie in the meeting with him and the rest of the team, he didn’t want her in any more danger than he had put her through.
As an agent guarded Elsie while she slept, Steve, Fury, Hill, Sam, and Natasha discussed their next plan of action in another room.
“This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize,” Fury says as he stares at an old photo of Pierce. “He said peace wasn’t an achievement, it was a responsibility. See, it’s stuff like this that gives me trust issues.”
“We have to stop the launch,” Natasha concludes.
Fury sits up straighter. “I don’t think the Council’s accepting my calls anymore.”
He then opens a case that housed three transparent server blades.
“What’s that?” Sam asks.
“Once the helicarriers reach 3,000 feet,” Hill explains, “they’ll triangulate with Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponized.”
“We need to breach those carriers,” Fury continues, “and replace their targeting blades with our own.”
“One or two won’t cut it. We need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if even one of those ships remains operational, a whole lot of people are gonna die.” Her tone was more serious now.
“We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is HYDRA. We have to get past them, insert these server blades, and maybe, just maybe we can salvage what’s left-”
“We’re not salvaging anything,” Steve objects. “We’re not just taking down the carriers, Nick. We’re taking down S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“S.H.I.E.L.D. had nothing to do with this,” Fury argues.
“You gave me this mission. This is how it ends. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s been compromised. You said so yourself. HYDRA grew right under your nose and nobody noticed.”
“Why do you think we’re meeting in this cave? I noticed.”
“How many paid the price before you did?” Steve questioned him.
Fury goes silent for a moment. “Look, I didn’t know about Barnes.”
“Even if you had, would you have told me? Or would you have compartmentalized that, too? S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA, it all goes.”
“He’s right,” Hill agrees.
Fury glances at the other two in the room, Natasha nodding in agreement with Hill.
“Don’t look at me,” Sam shakes his head. “I do what he does, just slower.”
“Well,” Fury sighs and leans back in his seat, looking back at Steve, “it looks like you’re giving the orders now, Captain.”
Once the meeting is dismissed, Steve has the team rest for a while before beginning preparations to stop HYDRA’s mass genocide. After checking up on Elsie, who was still sleeping soundly, he takes a walk outside, pondering over seeing Bucky again after a very long time. He had accepted the fact that his best friend was gone after waking up from the ice, but seeing him alive and now under HYDRA’s control was a double whammy.
As he stops by the railing looking over the dried up dam, his mind wanders back to when his mother passed away.
1937 Brooklyn. Church bells rang a sad tune in the distance. It was cold out, fitting the sadness that was glooming over him. He was eighteen turning nineteen, and Bucky walked him home after the funeral. Steve was still the small guy he was, but Bucky was pretty buff and could protect him despite Steve always wanting to fight the bullies off himself.
“We looked for you after,” Bucky says as they walk up the stairs to Steve’s apartment. “My folks wanted to give you a ride to the cemetery.”
“I know,” Steve sighs. “I’m sorry. I kind of wanted to be alone.”
“How was it?”
He shrugs. “It was okay. She’s next to Dad.” He wipes his tears from his face as they reach his floor.
“I was gonna ask,” Bucky proposed the idea of Steve coming to stay with his family as he had no one else left.
“I know what you’re gonna say, Buck,” Steve interrupts him as he frantically searches his pockets for his house key.
“We can put the couch cushions on the floor like when we were kids. It’ll be fun. All you gotta do is shine my shoes, maybe take out the trash.” He moves the stray brick hiding the extra key and hands it to Steve.
Pondering the idea, the thin boy shakes his head. “Thank you, Buck, but I can get by on my own.”
“The thing is, you don’t have to,” Bucky reminds him and puts a comforting hand on his friend’s shoulder. “I’m with you to the end of the line, pal.”
“He’s gonna be there, you know?” Sam’s voice pulls Steve out of his thoughts.
“I know,” he nodded.
“Look, whoever he used to be and the guy he is now, I don’t think he’s the kind you save. He’s the kind you stop.”
“ I don’t know if I can do that.” It was a large and bitter pill to swallow, even if Bucky could still potentially be saved.
“Well, he might not give you a choice. He doesn't know you.”
Steve looks him in the eye. “He will. Gear up. It’s time.”
Sam puts his hands on his hips. “You gonna wear that?” he half-jokes.
“No,” Steve says as he walks back inside. “If you’re gonna fight a war, you got to wear a uniform.”
When he walks by her bed again, Elsie is awake and in a new agent suit sipping on some tea as she reads something on a tablet. Steve was confused and wondered if she was the same woman sleeping after being on the run for two and half days.
“I thought you were actually sleeping this time,” he says as he enters the bay.
“I did,” she confirms as she sets her cup down on the side table. “Four hour nap, and I’m good to go.”
Steve sighs, a little disappointed that she didn’t sleep longer, but knowing her, she never backed down from a fight. She was Peggy made over with a dash of bubbly added.
Elsie’s face falters. “Don’t look at me like that.”
“I just don’t want you in another hospital bed,” Steve sighs and holds her shoulders gently. “I don’t want to lose you.”
He had lost so much in the past already, and the thought of Elsie being on that list of people hurt too much. He never wanted her to be in any danger because of him, but here she was fighting tooth and nail for him and never backing off.
“Steve, my world has been a mess these past few days,” she sighs. “I’ve been shot at, beaten up agents, fallen through glass, been in a bombing, jumped out of a moving car, just things I could never imagine even as a trainee. And in some weird way, it’s been the best adventure.” She pauses and ponders her words. “Okay, maybe not the best adjective, but all of this to say is that if this is what it means to fight for the man I love with my whole heart, then bring on the bullets.”
She cups his chiseled cheek and stares into his baby blues for a moment. He had been through an infinite hell for God knows how long, but if she could walk through the fire with him she’d do it while holding his hand and never letting go.
He breaks into a smile and whispers, “You’re with me to the end of the line?”
She smiles back. “And beyond it.”
Since Steve’s suit was destroyed in the Wheaton camp’s bombing, he ended up breaking into the Smithsonian and stealing his old suit from World War II. While it had aged with time, it still fit like a glove. Even Elsie thought the design was sexier than the navy and silver the other suit had.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters was a short hike in the woods away, so Steve, Elsie, Sam, and Hill went that way while Natasha disguised herself as one of the Council members to enter the facility. It was weird to be entering the facility as wanted criminals, but if they succeeded, they could possibly walk away free depending on how their peers reacted. Hill knew a secret way into the facility without being detected, so the four of them sneaked in and took a stairwell to the security room. Using a small device, Elsie scrambled Security’s earpieces, which made someone get up to check it out. When they opened the door, they weren’t expecting the Captain to be standing there along with the other three having their weapons drawn.
“Excuse us,” Steve says calmly, the man getting out of their path with his hands up.
He then finds the PA system while the other three guarded him. Removing his helmet, he presses the announcement button and delivers his message.
“Attention all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents,” he announces, “this is Steve Rogers. You’ve heard a lot about me over the last few days. Some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it’s time you know the truth. S.H.I.E.L.D. is not what we thought it was. It’s been taken over by HYDRA. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The S.T.R.I.K.E. and Insight crew are HYDRA as well. I don’t know how many more, but I know they’re in the building. They could be standing right next to you. They almost have what they want: Absolute control. They shot Nick Fury, and it won’t end there. If you launch those helicarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way. Unless we stop them. I know I’m asking a lot. But the price of freedom is high. It always has been. And it’s a price I’m willing to pay. And if I’m the only one, then so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not.”
Steve lets go of the button, and Sam approaches him with a proud smile.
“Did you write that down first?” he half-jokes. “Or was it off the top of your head?”
Multiple gunshots were heard in the distance, and the water in the football field-sized fountain concealing the launch bay began to disperse as the doors began to open. HYDRA was infiltrating and moving forward with their attack. Jet engines were beginning to fire up, and Hill was monitoring everything from a computer.
“They’re initiating launch,” she warns.
Grabbing his shield, Steve straps his helmet back on and prepares for battle with Sam.
“I’m coming with you,” Elsie insists.
“No,” he shakes his head. “I need you here. Find and help other agents to safety. Keep in touch with us and Agent Hill.”
Hill hands her an earpiece and communicator to attach to her wrist. As much as she hated not being able to back him up, she knew she had a duty to do. She would be going into the heat of battle alone, but she wasn’t going to let fear poison her mind.
“Don’t you dare get blown up,” Elsie replies. With one last kiss to his lips, she grabs a gun and sprints her way to the control room.

When the team came to be, Strike Team, led by Rumlow, had them surrounded with guns pointing at them. In no time, they cuffed Steve, Sam, and Natasha and threw them in the back of an armored truck.
“It was him,” Steve began, eyes on the cuffs. He felt a massive sense of guilt especially since finding out Bucky was alive and that he didn’t bother to find him after his fall. “He looked right at me like he didn’t even know me. Instead, he looked right at Y/N,” Steve was still in disbelief that Y/N’s soulmate was Bucky. Sam looked up at Steve. “How is that even possible? It was like 70 years ago? What’s worse is that that killing machine is Y/N’s soulmate,” Steve squeezed his eyes shut, choosing to avoid answering the second question. “Zola. Bucky’s whole unit was captured in ‘43. Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and--,” Natasha shook her head slightly, weak from her untreated wound. “None of that’s your fault, Steve,”
Steve sighed lowly. “Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky,” Natasha leaned back. “None of it is your fault, Steve. Even losing Y/N. I just hoped she did manage to escape from..from Bucky,” She was weakening and Sam took notice fast. He turned to the two soldiers. “We need to get a doctor here. If we don’t put pressure on that wound, she’s gonna bleed out here in the truck,” The first soldier ignited his stun rod, Sam leaned back a little. What he didn’t expect was for said soldier to attack the second, knocking him out effectively. Maria sighed, removing the helmet. “Ah, that thing was squeezing my brain,” The team was surprised to find an ally among the Strike Team. Time to make their big escape.

Slowly, Y/N came to be. However, it only came in short bursts. The first time she came to be shortly, bright light penetrated her eyes. She couldn’t see well, only blur filled her vision and in no time, she passed out again. The second time Y/N came to be, it was dark and the air smells stale. She tried to move but she couldn’t. She gave up and drifted back into the darkness. The third time Y/N came to be, she was fully conscious now. Her eyes fluttered open, accustoming her eyes to the dimly lit room. It seems like she was held hostage in an abandoned building but Y/N didn’t know for sure. The only giveaways were the newspaper-covered windows and the fact that the room she was in looked like a bedroom. Her eyes focused on the silhouette and almost instantly, fear sprouted in her chest. Y/N tugged hard on the binds, panting softly as she tried to get her hands and feet out of the bonds.

The Soldier turned to Y/N, his movements silent and intimidating as he moved closer to the woman. His metal hand reached out to touch Y/N’s cheek. He could not bring his soulmate back to HYDRA or else they would kill her. He knows HYDRA was ruthless in this sort of thing. So, to protect his soulmate, he took her to a safe place.
Y/N whimpered, scooting backwards until her back hit the wall. She shuddered when she felt the cool metal touch her cheek.
“Stop..get away from me,” Y/N begged quietly. All her training as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was failing, the terror growing in her was overwhelming. The Soldier could easily kill her with a flick of his wrist if she wasn’t his soulmate, of course. 
“When I first saw colours, I never imagined my soulmate to look as gorgeous as you,” The Soldier’s voice was low, his metal thumb stroked her delicate cheekbone. 
“Don’t touch me,” Y/N attempted to sound strong, moving her face away from The Soldier’s touch. A low growl escaped the assassin’s lips, a metal hand gripped Y/N’s face lightly. “You are mine, doll. You belong to me because you are my soulmate. Even if you don’t like it, I don’t care. You will learn to love me,” The Soldier leaned in, the tip of his nose brushed against Y/N’s. The agent gulped, avoiding eye contact with the monster.
A soft beeping caught Y/N’s attention. It came from The Soldier. The assassin growled, annoyed by the sudden interruption but he had work to do. Without saying another word, The Soldier left, leaving Y/N all alone in the abandoned building.

Turns out, Fury was alive and on a long journey to a full recovery. It was apparently better for S.H.I.E.L.D. to believe that he was dead so HYDRA could work at a full scale and risk exposure.
Natasha was patched up and the team was gathered around a table for a briefing. Fury picked up a photo of Alexander Pierce, looking at it with his one eye. “This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize. He said peace wasn’t an achievement, it was a responsibility,” Fury threw the photo on the table, leaning forward. “See, it’s stuff like this that gives me trust issues,” Natasha sighed softly. “We have to stop the launch and find Y/N,”
Fury sighed. “I don’t think the Council’s accepting my calls anymore and as for Y/N, we will find her. It’s only a matter of time until we do so,” The director opened a case, revealing three chips.
“What’s that?” Sam looked down at it. “Once the helicarriers reach 3,000 feet, they’ll triangulate with Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponized,” Maria turned the laptop around. “We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own,” Fury added.
“One or two won’t cut it. We need to link all three carriers for this work because if even one of those ships remain operational, a whole lot of people are gonna die,” Maria sighed softly.

And we still have no way of knowing how to locate Y/N. For all we know, she’s either dead or taken by Bucky,” Steve heaved out a heavy sigh of anger. “Why do you think we’re meeting in this cave? I noticed,”
“How many paid the price before you did?” Steve growled lowly.
Fury looked down and sighed. “Look, I didn’t know about Barnes,” “Even if you had, would you have told me? Or would you have compartmentalized that too? S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA, it all goes,” Fury sighed, deciding it was best to give in. He leaned back on his seat, eye on Steve. “Well, it looks like you’re giving the orders now, Captain. As for Y/N, Hill and I will work on that. We still have some tricks up our sleeves,” Fury nodded to Hill.
Steve looked at Sam and Natasha, nodding. “Then we’ll suit up,”

The Soldier stood on the edge of the building, mind fuzzy and hand twitching. HYDRA electrocuted him, giving him another mind wipe. But this time, it wasn’t easy for a clean wipe. The Soldier had begun his resistance a long time ago. His cerulean eyes took in the colored view of the city. That was something those scientists could never wipe or know and that is The Soldier’s discovery of his soulmate.

The Soldier disappeared from the roof, making his way into the abandoned building. Y/N gulped, eyes widening as she heard heavy footsteps getting closer and closer. She worked her hands quickly, dragging a sharp edge of a broken wood against the rope. She silently cheered when the rope snapped free. The footsteps were close now and Y/N kept her hands to her back.
The Soldier stepped into the room, towering over her seated form. Y/N gripped onto her little weapon, glaring up at The Soldier. He approached her, eyes dark and expression was even darker. “What do you wa--,” Y/N was cut off with a metal arm gripping her arm. The Soldier pulled the agent to her feet, pinning her against the wall. His dark eyes examined Y/N’s features. He needed comfort after what HYDRA did to him again. The torture never stops. It never does. If The Soldier showed signs of disobedience, he’ll get shocked. Any signs The Soldier showed to HYDRA that was related to him being disobedient would get him punished.
The Soldier sought comfort in his soulmate, his nose brushed against the exposed skin on Y/N’s neck. ‘No, this wasn’t supposed to happen!’ Y/N mentally scolded herself. The Soldier felt warm though. But nothing about him smelled good. The Soldier smelled like smoke and gunpowder. Nevertheless, Y/N leaned into The Soldier’s shoulder. ‘What are you doing? You’re free, he’s vulnerable, attack him and run!’ Y/N’s mind reminded her. Shit, it was right. “I’m sorry,” Y/N whispered. She gathered all her strength and shoved The Soldier off her, the assassin grunted in shock as Y/N made a run for it. “Блядь! (Fuck!),” The Soldier growled,  immediately taking off to chase the woman. Y/N looked over her shoulder, eyes widening as the gap between them was closing and it was closing really fast. Y/N turned a corner, almost slipping. She had to find a way out fast. The Soldier was fast on her tail.
Y/N has never felt so much fear in her life. Not even when the Earth was invaded by the Chitauris. She dug into her sleeve, slipping out a small metal ball, and threw it at The Soldier. A bright flash and a deep groan indicated that the assassin was disabled. For now. The route down to the first floor was blocked and it seems like the only way is up. So up did Y/N went. “Soulmate!” The Winter Soldier roared in anger, his thunderous voice echoed throughout the stairwell.
Y/N’s hairs stood on end, looking down to see that The Soldier was climbing up the stairs twice as fast as her. “No, no!”Y/N cried out, trying to reach the upper levels of the building as fast as she could because The Winter Soldier was just a level below her. The frantic woman burst through the roof door, looking over her shoulder. However, when she looked to the front, it was too late. Y/N skidded to a halt, missing the edge of the roof and slipped. She screamed in fear, her hand grabbing the ledge.

The building was old, almost crumbling down. The edge of concrete Y/N held broke under her weight, the woman screamed in terror, flailing her arms to try and reach something to save her from the freefall.
Was this the end for Y/N?

Bucky’s cheek stung after the third slap from Pierce, the flesh bright red and warm to the touch. He continued fighting his restraints as he had been for the past hour. He had just been wiped, HYDRA needed to start fresh. Sweat trickled from his hairline to his jugular as he yanked and squirmed in the chair.
Alexander lost his patience an hour ago, Bucky hadn’t stopped talking about the girl on the bridge, “She doesn’t love you! If she did, she would have come back for you. We’re trying to correct the world, and we need you to do that. You want to be useful, don’t you?”
Bucky stared ahead emotionless, ignoring Pierce’s words. She loved him. Her eyes told him so, the look on her face from the bridge continued to haunt him even after being reprogrammed. He knew her. She was good. She was home.
A hand came down against Bucky's face again, harder than the last, “You are an asset. She is what we are fighting against. The world deserves freedom and that is what HYDRA is doing. You don’t do your part and I can’t do mine.”
Bucky softly murmured, voice raw from screaming, “But I knew her.”
Alexander clenched his fist as he stood from his chair placed in front of Bucky, “Wipe him again.”
Soon the air was filled with Bucky’s screams again, torturous and raw. Brock Rumlow looked on in silence, taking in the sight before him. This, he could work with.

The team consisting of Florence, Steve, Natasha, Sam, Maria, and Fury were littered throughout the vacant underground room, lights dim and the air heavy with stale humidity. Steve and Sam stood while the remaining few were seated at a long conference table. Fury had documents scattered in front of him, Maria with a laptop, typing away intently.
Fury held an image of Pierce from the ’80s in his hand, “This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize. He said peace wasn’t an achievement, it was a responsibility.” Fury threw the picture onto the table, “See, it’s stuff like this that gives me trust issues.”
Natasha speaks from her chair next to her fellow redheaded friend, a solemn expression on her face, “We have to stop the launch.” Alexander was planning on using Project Insight, which consisted of three helicarriers that patrolled the Earth to eliminate threats, deployed after the Battle of New York, only this time it was being planned to be used as a way for HYDRA to eliminate any threats to themselves. The operation was now turned against them.
Fury looked at Natasha with an eyebrow raised, “I don’t think the Council’s accepting my calls anymore.” He flipped open a briefcase, revealing three data chips.
Behind Florence, Sam spoke with arms crossed tightly over his chest, “What’s that?”
Maria flipped her laptop around, showing the team a diagram of data, “Once the helicarriers reach 3,000 feet, they’ll triangulate with Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponized.”

Florence and Steve shared a look, Florence knew Steve wouldn’t let that happen, “We’re not salvaging anything. We’re not just taking down the carriers, Nick. We’re taking down S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Fury snapped back at Steve, “S.H.I.E.L.D. had nothing to do with this.”
“You gave me this mission, this is how it ends. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s been compromised. You said so yourself. HYDRA grew right under your nose and nobody noticed.” Steve’s face was set, his entire body taking on the posture of command.
Fury gestured around the room with his hands before setting them back on the table, “Why do you think we’re meeting in this cave? I noticed.”
Steve’s face remained cold, “How many paid the price before you did?” Florence read between the lines, she knew what he was asking and it felt like a punch to the gut.
Fury bowed his head as Florence looked away, “Look, I didn’t know about Barnes.” No one did.
Steve scoffed, “Even if you had, would you have told me? Or would you have compartmentalized that too? Like Florence.”
“Hey, she did what she had to. You did not go through what she did.” Florence looked to Fury with kindness in her tired eyes, silently thanking him.
Steve interrupted the tender moment, continuing his speech, “S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA, it all goes.”
“He’s right. It all has to go.” All eyes darted to Maria, a silent understanding that Steve was right. This was the beginning of the end.
Fury looks around, eyes landing on Sam, “Don’t look at me.” Sam nods his head to Steve, “I do what he does, just slower.”
Steve stood at the head of the table, staring at Fury as he leaned back in his chair, “Looks like you’re giving the orders now, Captain.”
The team was given their tasks, parting their separate ways before the mission.
Florence found Steve outside, standing on the bridge lost in thought.
Florence sided up next to him, “Hey, I know you probably hate me right now, but-”
Steve cut her off, turning to face her, “I don’t hate you. I don’t. I’m just struggling to wrap my head around the fact that he’s been alive this entire time and you haven’t told one person. Not even me.”
“Steve, I tried. After I ran, I tried to go back for him but he wouldn’t let me; told me to run and to never come back for him. So I had to go into hiding. Seventeen years Steve. It’s not like I could walk into a government building and tell them without HYDRA catching wind. Hell, I could have been walking straight back into HYDRA. You have to understand that everything I’ve done has been to protect him. Everything.” By the end of the redheads’ speech, she was choking back tears, hands trembling at her sides. She bit her lip to quell the emotions running through her.
Steve placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, “I know, I know. I’m sorry.”
Silence fell over the two friends as both reminisced on the past, staring off into space.
Flashback:
Florence climbed the stairs behind Bucky and Steve to Steve’s family home. The mood was somber, Florence’s black funeral dress grazing her ankles as she stepped up the last step, standing next to Bucky.
“We looked for you after. My folks wanted to give you a ride to the cemetery.” Bucky’s tone was soft as he spoke to the heartbroken Steve.
“I know. Kinda wanted to be alone.” Steve stared at the ground as he spoke, never making eye contact with either Florence or Bucky.
Florence cocked her head to one side, gaze softly inquisitive as she looked at the small-statured man in front of her, “How was it?”
“It was okay. She’s next to dad.” The blonde’s tone was monotonous and quiet, understandably so.
Bucky shrugged his shoulders, “I was gonna ask-”
Steve cut him off as he reached his front door, hands fumbling in his pocket for the key, “I know what you’re gonna say, Buck, I just-”
“You can put the couch cushions on the floor, like when we were kids. It’ll be fun, all you gotta do is shine my shoes, maybe take out the trash.” Bucky reached down to move a brick, grabbing the key to the door and handing it to Steve, “Come on.”
Steve took the key, finally looking him in the eye, “Thank you, Buck. But I can get by on my own.”
Florence looked to Bucky, silently telling him to comfort their friend. Bucky nodded, speaking again, “The thing is, you don’t have to.” Bucky’s large hand clapped Steve on the shoulder, “Cuz me and Florence? We’re with you till the end of the line, pal.”
The moment was broken up by Sam, approaching the two old friends, “He’s gonna be there you know.”
“We know.” Both Steve and Florence were painfully aware of that fact.
“Look, whoever he used to be and the guy he is now, I don’t think he’s the kind you save. He’s the kind you stop.”
Steve looked to Sam, “I don’t know if I can do that.” Florence knew she couldn’t. Everything she has ever done, Bucky has always crossed her mind- how to help him, save him, protect him; always concerned about his well-being. And now she was forced to go against him.
“Well, he might not give you a choice. He doesn’t know either of you.” Sam twisted the knife with his last sentence, Florence and Steve grimacing at one another.
Steve spoke, looking at Florence for a last time then at Sam, “He will.” The blonde looked over the bridge, “Gear up. It’s time.”
The team changed into their gear and split up to where they were appointed: Natasha infiltrating a meeting with Alexander as a congresswoman with Fury as backup and releasing all HYDRA files, Maria preparing to order the attack to bring down the helicarriers, and Steve, Sam, and Florence to board the helicarrier to replace the targeting blades.
Sam called out to Steve as he walked away, "Wearing that?"
“No. If you’re gonna fight a war, you have to wear a uniform.”

Florence ran through the ship deck as fast as she could, doing her best to not get shot. Her earpiece kept her up to date, Natasha had just started releasing all of the files; her and Natasha’s secrets were now public along with the rest of HYDRA’s. Steve had already made it to the helicarrier, the redhead had gotten caught up with a HYDRA agent on the ground.
Florence was late to the party, Steve, and Bucky already furiously exchanging punches. She got to the top of the carrier as fast as she could with the help of Sam, her feet moving without thought. Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw Sam deploy his parachute after being kicked off by Bucky, now he was grounded.
Steve and Florence were on opposite ends of the carrier, Florence quickly making her way toward the two men.
Bucky threw Steve off of the top-level, Steve landing below with a thud, shield long gone in the Potomac beneath them.
Florence stared ahead, Bucky finally noticing her arrival. Both looked at the other in silence, gauging the situation at hand. His eyes were void of all emotion, this was not Bucky. The Soldier had a mission to kill her and Steve. Florence had a mission to keep Bucky alive, no matter the cost. If he was alive that meant there was hope to save him. You can’t save a dead man.
The silence was erupted by Florence, her mouth moving before her brain could stop, "Bucky, don't do this. You don't have to do this."
Tears welled up in her eyes unwillingly, the dam threatening to burst. Even if she knew deep down that he had been alive this entire time, a sliver of her always thought he was dead. Maybe her subconscious came up with that thought to protect herself, to make herself feel better about not being able to get him out. And she did try to get him out; she tried like hell. The first five years of her seventeen-year stint of being on the run was the worst. She was constantly moving locations, barely sleeping. And when she did sleep, she dreamt of Bucky- he was always screaming at her to go, save herself, and leave him behind. That was a detail that she would never tell Steve; if they even made it out alive of this situation. Steve wouldn’t understand, he was too stuck in his ways, he would have tried to get him out anyway. He would disregard any command in order to save Bucky even if the demand came straight from Bucky’s mouth. He would never truly understand why Florence did what she did. Maybe it was better that way.
He furrows his brow, lines etching themselves between his steel-blue eyes, "You're my mission."
A single breath is taken before he swings at her, metal arm glinting in the light as she dodges his punch, sweeping under his outstretched arm. She wasn't going to fight back. She couldn't.
Bucky turns violently, eyes hard, set on her. He lunges again as her weapon clatters to the ground of the helicarrier. Now Florence was defenseless. Although it's not like she was fighting back anyway. She'd let him kill her. If that kept him alive, she'd do it. It's not like he remembers her anyway, you can't mourn a person you don't remember.
She takes three steps back, her back colliding with the wall behind her as Bucky stalks forward. His breath fans across her face as he stands in front of her. She notices a stall in his motions, practically seeing his brain malfunction. His head was fighting with his heart.
A fist flies next to her head, Bucky purposely missing as he punches the wall again. His face twisted in pain, he was fighting himself. He couldn't do this. He knew her. His body knew her, pieces of memories played through his brain as he continued to punch the wall, a ring, her hand in his, dog tags being placed around her neck, all of it hurt. Florence was frozen in place as Bucky's fists continued flying next to her, "Go! You need to go!"
He remembered her.
Just as Steve ordered Maria to fire at the carrier, Bucky shoved Florence, causing her to tumble over the edge, joining Steve at the bottom of the carrier as it went up in flames. The carrier was under fire from all sides, jostling violently, causing Bucky to fall along with her. He landed away from Florence and Steve, being pinned under the debris.
Steve got to his feet, swaying as he stumbled over to Bucky who was struggling under the weight of the metal beam. Steve wedged the beam up, freeing Bucky. The girl remained on the ground, curling into a ball from the pain of the impact of the fall.
Florence rose to her feet as Steve told Bucky that he knew them. Bucky’s metal arm reeled back, punching Steve in the face as he screamed, “No I don’t!”
“Buck, we’ve known you your whole life.” Florence’s voice trembled as he hit Steve again, effectively knocking him to the ground.
Steve stood again, “Your name is James Buchanan Barnes.”
Bucky punched Steve in the face for a final time, the force knocking him off the carrier and into the river below. Florence scrambled to stand in front of Bucky, making him really look at her. To truly see her, to see what he was doing. Her face was bleeding, soot smudged across her forehead, sweat mixing with tears and blood flowing down her face.
“I’m not gonna fight you. I love you.” Florence’s body shook with sobs as Bucky tackled her to the ground.
His frame towered over hers, his body heaving as he spoke, “You’re my mission.” His fist flew next to her head, once, twice; never actually hitting her. Florence could see the struggle in his eyes. He was a broken man without a home.
“You don’t love me. You left me!” Bucky’s fist continued flying next to Florence’s head, the plexiglass cracking. Pierce’s words looped in his mind, she didn’t love him. She left him. She abandoned him. She was his mission.
Florence took a heaving breath in, “Yes I do, I do love you. I tried to get you out, I did, you wouldn’t let me, I tried, I-” Bucky interrupted her by pressing his flesh hand against her throat and applying pressure.
He leaned down, only inches between their faces as he applied more pressure around her throat and choking her. He grit his teeth as he choked her harder, brunette hair dangling in his face. This was it. This was Florence’s last chance, “It’s okay. It’s okay. I love you, it’s okay.” If these were the last words Bucky would ever hear from her, she was okay with that. She needed him to know that it was okay. He was doing what he had been forced to do, it wasn’t him. She needed him to know that she understood.
The hand from her throat disappeared, Bucky leaning back above her, staring at her with glassy eyes. Florence struggled for breath as she watched Bucky process her words. Debris fell around them, Bucky hovering over her to protect her from the falling particles. A large engine fell next to them, shattering the glass and sending Florence falling straight into the Potomac, Bucky hanging onto the carrier from a beam as he watched his lover fall into the water below.
Bucky dragged Steve out of the water with his metal arm while the other balanced Florence against his shoulder, ignoring the burning pain of his flesh arm as her head rested on his neck. He placed the two unconscious Avengers on the riverbank, taking one last look at them before he disappeared, becoming a ghost yet again.

The Ghost of Winter part 3
Legacy agent, (Y/N), has been trained her entire life by a mystery man. When they learn that HYDRA has infiltrated SHIELD, she must fight to stop them. But could she betray the trust of her friends for her teacher?

“This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize.” Fury stared down at the photo of  Pierce, “He said peace wasn’t an achievement, it was a responsibility.” He dropped the photo on the table, glancing around at the agents before him. Hill and Romanoff sat while Rogers, Wilson, and (Y/N) stood close by, clearly anxious to get started. 
“See, it’s stuff like this that gives me trust issues.” 
“We have to stop the launch.” Natasha’s voice was slightly hoarse, probably from screaming at civilians to get out of the way during their fight the day before.
“I don’t think the Council’s taking my calls anymore.” Fury said, opening a black briefcase that had been placed on the table. Inside were three file chips. They looked incredibly advanced for something so small. 
“What’s that?” Sam leaned in for a closer look. 
“Once the helicarriers reach three-thousand feet, they’ll triangulate with Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponized.” Hill spun around her laptop to show them a simulation of Insight’s ability to connect with the other helicarriers and the satellite.
“We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own.” Fury said. 
“One or two won’t cut it.” Hill added, “We need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if even one of those ships remains operational, a whole lot of people are gonna die.” 
“We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is HYDRA. We have to get past them, insert these sever blades. And maybe, just maybe we can salvage what’s left-”
“We’re not salvaging anything.” Steve interrupted causing all eyes to be on him -not that it was easy to take your eyes off of him in the first place- “We’re not taking down the carriers, Nick. We’re taking down SHIELD.” 
“SHIELD had nothing to do with this.” Fury narrowed his eye. 
“You gave me this mission. This is how it ends. SHIELD’s been compromised. You said so yourself. HYDRA grew right under your nose and nobody noticed.” 
“Why do you think we’re meeting in this cave?” Fury asked, “I noticed.” 
“How many paid the price before you did?” 
Fury paused, “Look, I didn’t know about Barnes.” 
“Even if you had, would you have told me?” Steve’s words were laced with anger, “Or would you have compartmentalized that, too?” 
“Did you know how I was being trained?” (Y/N) spoke the thoughts out loud, looking down at Fury, “Did you know that I was being trained by Barnes?” 
He avoided her gaze and sighed through his nose, “I knew you were being trained outside of our facilities. I kept a close eye.” She shook her head, a sad smile on her lips. 
“SHIELD. HYDRA. It all goes.” Steve stood his ground, quickly glancing at (Y/N). 
“He’s right.” Hill broke the tension before Fury could say more, giving the director a small nod. Fury glanced around the room, landing on Sam. 
“Don’t look at me.” He said, “I do what he does, just slower.” 
“Well...” Nick sighed, leaning back in his chair, “It looks like you’re giving the orders now, Captain.”

Once the meeting had been adjourned, Steve had excused himself. (Y/N) kept her distance, looking up at the Captain from the embankment below the bridge. It was quiet here, something they both needed. She thought back to a simpler time, ironically, it was only a few days ago before Nick got attacked. 
This time was different than the others. When she was younger, he would just show up randomly, years in between. But this time was different. It was dusk, not a great time to be walking through Central Park, especially as a woman, but there was something about the Park at night that just felt magical. The fireflies were out, lighting a path to nowhere with their love lights. Dad told her that fireflies lights were their way of saying I love you to their special love-bug. She would run ahead and catch them gently in her hands, setting one down and then catching another to sit them both down together. Most of the time they flew away, but one time, a very special time, the little bugs’ antennae danced and waved as they felt each other out, both of them flying off together into the night. Her dad had called her the love doctor. 
Love hadn’t been something that (Y/N) thought much about. She was a SHIELD agent, her life was her work. Her family were her fellow agents. She didn’t start thinking about love until she saw the way Tony Stark looked at Pepper Potts. Behind the sarcasm and the ego was a man who adored her so completely. You could see in his eyes how much he loved her, how much he cared for her. Did he accidentally forget she was allergic to strawberries? Yes, but no one was perfect. But Tony thought Pepper was perfect. And despite his flaws, Pepper was in love with Tony Stark, the playboy philanthropist. 
A figure on a dark bench brought (Y/N) out of her thoughts. She could recognize him almost immediately, even in the dark. He was staring up into the city, all the lights twinkling like stars. Of course there were no stars really. Because of light pollution. 
Sitting down besides him, she joined him in his gaze and listened closely. His breathing normal, meaning that he wasn’t actively trying to stay hidden. The first time she had been around him, she almost thought that he wasn’t breathing, that he was a robotic man. But he was human. 
“There was a black out about twenty years ago.” She said, “The whole city went dark, the only thing you could hear were sirens because everyone was looking up at the sky in awe. A lot of people around here had never really seen any stars in New York before. It brought the city together, if just for a little while.” 
The soldier didn’t reply to that, but he did say something that surprised her. 
“I don’t care for the dark.” His voice was low, “It’s cold.” 
“I guess you prefer the sunshine, huh?” She smiled. 
The man looked at her out of the corner of his eye, the corner of his lips tugging upwards, “You could say that.” 
Barnes preferred the sunshine. He called her sunshine. She really did not want to go through the implications of that. 
“He’s gonna be there, ya know?” Natasha asked as she walked up. 
Taking a deep breath, she turned away from the bridge where Wilson was up talking to Steve, probably having the same conversation. 
“Yeah, I know.” 
“And what if it comes to killing him?” She asked, gauging her reaction. 
The thought had come up, could she kill the Winter Soldier if it meant survival? Before knowing who he truly was, she would have said yes without another question. He had killed people, who knew how many. But knowing who he was now... Sergeant James Barnes trapped in his own mind. 
“I want to kill him as much as that man on the bridge up there.” She nodded towards the bridge above, “Tasha, I know what he’s done. But Sergeant James Barnes of the one hundred and seventh would never do what the Winter Soldier has done.” 
Natasha glanced up at the bridge then back at her friend: “I get it. When Loki had control over Clint, I told everyone that I would do what was necessary. But I would never hurt him. I care about him too much.” 
“Natasha Romanoff cares about someone?” (Y/N) smirked, trying to keep the mood light. 
“Yeah, and if you’re not too careful, I might start caring about you too.” She nudged her fellow agent in the side. She smiled, closing her eyes for a moment. 
A lot of things were about to change today. SHIELD, the organization that her father put his heart and soul into had been infiltrated by HYDRA, and in a way, his daughter had too. Today was going to be the end of SHIELD. They had to start anew, seeing that they lived through this. 
“Alright, let’s go.”

Later after splitting up, Agent Hill, Sam, Steve, and (Y/N) walked through the woods. The Captain paused as they came to a clearing, staring at Washington DC in the distance. (Y/N) paused beside him, trying to read his expression. He looked stoic, but something in those blue eyes told him that he hated what he had to do. That was when she noticed that he was in his original suit, the one from so long ago. Seeing him like this would have made her father smile. 
“Looking good, soldier.” She smiled at him. He smiled slightly. 
“Thanks. It’s vintage.” 
Once inside Insight’s launch pad, they made their way to the control room. Over the PA system, a man called over that they were ready for launch. A woman’s voice followed, calling for agents to go to their launch positions. Outside the door, (Y/N) activated her listening device that let her hear through the other side of the door. They seemed to be talking about a parking space. Typical. 
“Activate radio scramble.” She pointed to Hill. The agent pulled a small rectangle device from her belt and pressed the button on top with her thumb. She heard the workers grimace and yell from inside, one saying that he would check it out. 
“Two seconds.” On her command, she, agent Hill, and Sam drew their pistols, Steve in the middle, standing there waiting for the door to open. (Y/N) glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, past Sam. He glanced back, winking at her. She didn’t know why, but her chest got warm in that moment. 
The door opened, a very surprised worker finding all of them, holding his hands up. 
“Excuse us.” Said Cap. The worker backed away from the door, hands still in the air, Steve leading them inside. Hill quickly took over the PA system, handing Steve the intercom. 
“Attention, all SHIELD agents. This is Steve Rogers. You've heard a lot about me over the last few days, some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it's time you know the truth...” As he spoke she smiled at him. Would her father be disappointed in the fall of SHIELD? Sure, but if he knew that Steve Rogers would lead them into a new era, he would be okay with that. And herself? Well, she would follow Steve to the ends of the Earth, “...They shot Nick Fury and it won't end there. If you launch those Helicarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way, unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot, but the price of freedom is high, it always has been, and it's a price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not.” Once Steve was done, he turned back to a sly looking Sam. 
“Did you write that down first, or was it off the top of your head?” He asked. 
“Wilson, the good Captain is excellent at last minute speeches.” She smiled, then leaned on Steve’s shoulder, “Dad had all your speeches memorized. Gave one at my middle school softball championship. It didn’t make any sense but it was good for morale.” 
Steve smiled down at her, nudging her back, “Seeing we make it out of this alive, I’d like to hear more about that.” A groaning from above caused them all to look up, smiles fading. 
“We need to go.” Steve said, causing them all to start running towards the launch pad. 
“They’re initiating the launch.” Hill called over their coms. 
They ran over the pad, passing advanced aircraft left and right. 
“Hey, Cap,” Sam shouted as they ran, “How do we know the good guys from the bad guys?”
“If they're shooting at you, they're bad.” Steve said. They neared the edge, Sam starting the Falcon wings, (Y/N) shooting her zipline, and Steve just jumping straight down onto the hellipad below. Once on solid ground again, they could see one of the hellicarriers besides them. It was hard keeping up with the soldier. Thankfully, she had installed roller wheels in her tactical boots to come out when her heels were clicked. She followed close behind Cap, avoiding the bullets from the HYDRA agents coming towards them. They weaved through cargo, subduing them left and right. Until Steve brought out a grenade, throwing it at the last three agents, knocking them all unconscious. 
“Where was that five minutes ago?” She asked, panting. 
Steve let out a breath, “Just keep up, hot wheels.” He started running again. 
“Since when did you start making jokes?” She smirked, following behind him.

“Two down, one to go.” Agent Hill’s voice buzzed in (Y/N)’s ears, swinging from one hellicarrier to another. She didn’t have the luxury of Sam Wilson international, so swinging in through a window was the only option. She had gotten her chip into her hellicarrier, moving to the next one to give Cap some backup. Sam was stuck on the ground, leaving Cap and (Y/N) on their own. 
After getting Steve inside, they moved towards the heart of the carrier where the chip would be implanted. On the bridge, the two came to a halt, face to face with the Winter Soldier. 
His face was bare, no longer hiding his eyes and mouth. His lips were in a tight line, his eyes held no emotion, no recognition. They must have done something to him, something to make him a cold shell once more. 
“People are gonna die, Buck.” Steve stared down the man he once called friend, “I can't let that happen.” The soldier said nothing, continuing to stand in the way of their destination. 
“Please, don't make me do this.” Steve pleaded, looking for something, anything that remained of his friend. He got nothing. Steve sighed, glancing back at (Y/N) and handing her the chip. (Y/N) nodded, slowly backing up then running when Steve threw his shield at the HYDRA agent, who deflected it with his metal arm. When they weren’t on the Captain, she could feel the soldier’s eyes on her, staring her down, watching her every movement. Every bullet that wasn’t shot at Steve, was one ricocheted at her. 
Finally, she came back to the center of the rig, using the codes to open the locked containment. The chips came down, locking into place, the doors opening wide. Before she could move to put the chip in, a grunt and a hand around her neck brought her attention to Barnes. He was breathing hard from his fight with Steve, but that didn’t keep him from his mission. She gripped at his metal wrist, struggling to breathe. 
“This isn’t who you are.” She managed to squeeze out. This seemed to make him angrier, he threw her over the bridge. As she fell, her back slammed against the platform, the chip falling from her hand, the air knocked out of her lungs. 
“Got it!” Steve called from above, jumping down from the bridge to the glass floor below. Her eyes followed him down and... She had never been one to be afraid of heights, but full grown trees shouldn’t look that small. Overhead, the Winter Soldier leaped down, throwing the shield at the captain just as he was about to grab the chip. A knife brought out, flipped expertly in the soldier’s hands and finding its way into Steve’s shoulder. 
Now or never. She slid down, using her body to knock the soldier to the ground. They went to the ground, her holding her side where his rib had broken her fall on the soldier’s metal arm. 
The soldier grunted, reaching out for the chip that was on the ground. Steve beating him to it, grabbing Barnes by the neck and lifting him up. Much like she had earlier, Barnes’ legs swung, trying to land a kick. Steve flipped him on his back, turning him again and putting him in a joke hold with his hand held awkwardly out. The soldier was gripping tight onto the chip. 
Stumbling, (Y/N) got up, prying at his fingers to release the chip. 
“Drop it!” Steve shouted, “Drop it!” The Soldier continued to grip tight. The next thing they heard was a loud pop, followed by Barnes’ crying out in pain. 
“Back up.” Steve commanded, she followed suit, watching Steve fall on his back, keeping Barnes on top, both arms around his neck. (Y/n) kept her knife tight in her hand, ready in case he broke out of Steve’s grip. But he didn’t and slowly, he passed out, the chip falling from his grasp. 
“You go.” She kneeled down, tossing it to him as he stood, “You’re way faster.” He caught the chip, running to get back to the top. 
Her attention was then brought to the unconscious man in front of her. Even in his sleep he looked like he was angry, in pain even. (Y/N) carefully moved him to his back. He was breathing normally, he would be fine when he woke up. Hopefully he would be out long enough for them to-
The Winter Soldier’s eyes shot open, his closed metal fist striking her face. Her head felt back, falling backwards on the glass. A shot rang out and Steve cried out in pain. The soldier was up, a pistol in his hands. Steve kept climbing, even as he was hit with another bullet. 
On her feet, she roared, running and grabbing at the soldier’s middle to take him down on his back. She straddled his torso, back handing him across the face, grabbing at the gun in his fist. She missed the first punch he threw, but not the second. His fist connecting with her already fractured rib, then using his legs to flip them so he towered over her. At this point, even breathing was painful, whether it was the broken nose of her lungs inflating against sharp bone. He punched her again with his metal fist, leaving her dazed and exhausted. He stood up back up, aiming up and firing at Steve for a third time. This bullet took the Captain down. 
“Steve...” She whispered in a daze, making an effort to sit, but her side kept her down. If she didn’t move just right, the bone could fully separate from the lining of muscle and kill her. She couldn’t help if she was dead. But she also was helpless against the Winter Soldier. He taught her how to fight, he knew everything she did. 
“Charlie locked.” Steve’s voice crackled in her ear piece, a smile tugging at her busted lip. 
“Alright, you guys get out of there.” Hill’s voice called. 
“Fire now.” Steve replied, panting heavily. 
“Steve-”
“Do it! Do it now!” He shouted. 
Well, dying in the name of defeating HYDRA wasn’t a bad idea. She carefully came to a standing position, leaning against a wall for support. This was useless though, the hellicarriers’ weapons firing upon one another. Glass shattered, the whole carrier shaking erratically. Gun fire and explosions roared around them.
“(Y/N)! Get outta here!” Steve shouted from above, holding onto the railing of the bridge. 
“Not without you!” She strained to call back, “My dad would kill me!” 
 Above, a support beam fell in front of her, missing her but landing on top of Barnes. He cried out, struggling to use the metal arm that was pinned beneath the hundred ton support. A scream of metal cried around them, meaning the engines running the turbines were destroyed, they were falling out of the sky, crashing into the other carriers.
Steve, regardless of his injuries, jumped down to the support beam where the Soldier was pinned. (Y/N) attempted to navigate the rubble, his rip screaming out at her. The Captain lifted the beam with some ease, giving the Soldier enough time to crawl out before dropping it again. 
“You know me.” Steve said, the two slowly come to a stand. 
“No I don’t!” Barnes shouted, using his whole body to punch Steve across the face. Just as she was about to reach the two, another explosion rattled through the carrier, forcing her to fall on her front, creating a piercing pain that made her whole body freeze up. 
She looked back up, seeing the two men fighting again. Her eyelids grew heavy and before the darkness there was a sense of calm around her, almost like she was weightless. 
-
When (Y/N) opened her eyes again, she was in the back of a car. From what she could see outside, the car was parked in an alleyway. The sirens in the background told her that she was still in DC. (Y/N) looked up to the front seat, seeing the Winter Soldier staring at her from the rear view mirror. She tensed up, attempting to sit up, but her side pain awoke with her. 
“Don’t.” He said sternly, watching her slowly relax under his watch. 
“Why don’t you just kill me?” She asked, her voice strained. 
“I don’t know.” He said, fully turning to look back at her. He had on a baseball cap and a dark jacket. He was trying to blend in. Since HYDRA was down, he had no one to report back to. And something told her that he wasn’t fully under their control at this point. 
“Do you know who you are?” She asked, watching for any sign of a weapon. 
“No. But you seem to.” 
“I can tell you about yourself, but I don’t think that it will fully get through that HYDRA brainwash.” She sighed through her nose and closed her eyes. 
(Y/N) knew that with everyones’ skeletons out of the closet, the Winter Soldier was now known to the public and he would be enemy number one for all of his crimes. But these crimes were committed by a man locked inside of his own body. 
“I can’t believe I’m saying this.” She muttered before looking up at him again, “Look, I don’t want you getting killed. It wouldn’t be right. And you have taught me everything I know. Let me help you.” 
“How can you help me?” He asked, narrowing his eyes. 
“I know where they wouldn’t think to look. And after some time and learning, I think we may be able to get back to yourself.” 
He stared intently, “And if we can’t?”  
She swallowed thickly, “Then we try again.”

✧I Need You✧ Chapter 105
The lovely room you’d woken up in didn’t include a side bathroom. Perhaps you were getting a little too comfortable to the five-star lifestyle. SHIELD usually had nicer places than the one you’d ended up in- wherever that was- but considering you seemed to have been pulled out by rogue agents (a bare summation that you’d put together yourself) and shunted to wherever this was, perhaps you should forgive the whole no-shower thing. 
It did, at least, have a sink. So while Tony was busy with a few things that you could only guess what they were, you turned your back on him to let him work and took a very minimal amount of time removing your shirt and gathering up a handful of paper towels to try and wipe the dried blood off your arms and the sides of your neck. It hurt to move around, still. You weren’t sure how long ago you’d been shot, or how bad it had been… it felt pretty bad. So much so, in fact, that even though you were tempted to unwind the bandages from your chest, you thought better of it. 
Whatever momentary peace you’d had was broken when a soft knock came at the door. It made you hurry to put your shirt back on with a small call, “Just a second.” Although Tony’s ire was sharper. “Occupied.” 
A literal second was all the person on the other side waited, you were barely fully clothed again by the time the door opened. “We’re running short on time.” As you looked up you saw Maria Hill, arms crossed. “We’ve gotta start making some moves.” Her smile at you was extremely brief. “Can you move yet?” 
Tony answered for you. “Enough to go home.” 
“I’m not going anywhere.” In fact your grunt of pain suggested exactly that. “Where are we, anyway? What happened?” Things were understandably a little fuzzy. You might have asked Tony what he was doing there, or how he’d gotten here, too, but… seeing as you were glad to have him near, you didn’t particularly care. 
As Maria stepped aside, into the room, Steve was not too far behind her. “You jumped in front of a bullet meant for me.” He seemed… uncomfortable to say the least. And very solemn. 
Tony looked up at him. “Usually some gratitude applies. But I’m sure you’ll send her a note on some nice stationary when we’re done.” You couldn’t make out if he was angry with Steve. He’d have no reason to be- probably just misplaced.
And- the last voice you’d have ever expected to hear, brought up the rear of this little circus show, as Nat wheeled Nick-fucking-Fury into the room. She seemed injured, too. At least you weren’t the only one covered in band-aids. “We’re in the last unknown bunker. Off-grid.” 
“Oh.” You said, accidentally a little more loudly than you meant. “I died and went to hell. Is that it?” 
The laugh that left him seemed to hurt him at the same time, sending him into a soft coughing fit that put a stall in the room. “Good to see you, too.” But when he caught his breath and held up his hand, he directed a strange smile your way. “What was it I was supposed to say- you were right- and we’re personally destroying Project Insight?” 
“That supposed to make me feel better?” If you’d had any energy left, you might have growled this at him. 
Shifting back, Tony pulled a USB stick out of a laptop. “Payload’s ready. Shame we have to have three hands on the proverbial wheel. Would’ve been a lot easier to take out from the comfort of this lovely sewer.” 
Nick gave him a look. “If you’re gonna launch or unlaunch a project like this, you have to be very sure.” 
“I get it.” Tony answered pretty dryly. “Like simultaneous turnkeys to  launch a nuke- but hey- seems like you always knew exactly what this was, huh?” Anger successfully redirected. And to a person that deserved it. “That Zero Day on the backend is pretty cute. Also pretty useless considering you expected you’d need a present cocktail to activate it. Also not as hidden as you thought.” 
Fury rolled his eye. “We get it, Stark. You’re smarter than the rest of us. Now, if we could just move on to formulating an actual plan- we have to assume everyone on board those helicarriers is Hydra. The tough part isn’t inserting the keys, it’s getting past them to do it. And if we’re lucky we can salvage what’s left when we’re done.” 
“No.” You were surprised just how many people said this at the same time. But you didn’t wait for the silence to clear. “Let me get this straight- sorry I’m the last horse finishing the race here- so we have to get aboard all three of Project Insight’s helicarriers, insert keys with a payload- all at the right time- to try and take them down- and you want to take them back?” 
“Oh. I must have misunderstood.” Tony dropped the stick on the table so he could cross his arms. “Was that the plan? Sorry. I have a complete destruction order.” 
Steve waved a hand. “We’re not salvaging anything. We're not just taking down the carriers, Nick, we're taking down SHIELD.” 
This shocked you, if only a little. It was nice to have everyone on the same side- but to think Steve and Tony had talked, in your brief lapse of unconsciousness and recovery, about fully dismantling SHIELD? That was… 
Fury was getting pretty upset. “SHIELD had nothing to do with this.” 
“That’s where you’re wrong.” Tony’s smart sass cutting the room. “Seems like SHIELD had everything to do with this. Negligence and ignorance don’t exactly scream innocence to me.” 
Steve shook his head. “You gave us this mission, this is how it ends. SHIELD's been compromised. HYDRA grew right under your nose and nobody noticed.” 
Scoffing, Nick half turned to level an icy glare Steve’s way. “Why do you think we’re down here? I noticed.” 
Squaring up, Steve met him blow for blow, voice lowering. “And how many paid the price before you did?” 
You were grateful when Natasha stepped between them. “We don’t have time for another quarrel of ethics.” Then she looked right at Nick. “...and for the record-” 
Fury turned his head down. “You agree. Yeah. That’s the consensus, huh? We all agree?” Looking around the room then. 
“SHIELD, HYDRA, it all goes.” Steve giving the last order on this matter.

There was an very limited window to suit up- almost an impossibility for you, seeing as yours was extremely damaged. Tony had been working on it alongside getting those USBs loaded. He was nothing if not a genius- and a genius multi-tasker, at that. But even so… 
He looked a little beat up himself as he handed your Heart Reactor back to you. “We need a plan.” Not physically damaged- yet- but… for one reason or another pretty emotionally wounded.
Even though he pressed the device into your palm, he was reluctant to let go. From your position on the bed you looked up at him. “Isn’t that something we should do with everyone out there?” The team had left the two of you for some privacy, but it wouldn’t last long. 
And if it was time to start forming groups and figuring out who did what, everyone needed to be present for that. He frowned lightly, letting his fingers slip away from yours. “I did the best I could- given my extremely limited time, tool set, and inhospitable environment-” 
Trying to cut his grumbling off, you shifted off the bed, leaning up to press a kiss to his cheek. “I’m sure it’s fine.” Pushing the Reactor to your chest after. 
But he wasn’t able to let you go yet, as his hands came to your hips. “You know I’d never speak bad about my own work- but- it’s not enough. You get backed into another corner like that again- you might not make it out.” 
“Well- we have almost the whole team, right? It’s less likely to happen again-” 
“Be serious about this, for a second- and- that’s coming from me.” He was in that twisted mood he always fell into when you got hurt. When he had to come at the very end of a fight or a mishap, and you were in bad shape. It scared him straight to his core. It unnerved him, same as it made him angry. “You know I think you can do anything- and I know you won’t just go home- so can we please just split the difference and have you on civilian escort? These things aren’t going down without a fight, and there’s a lot of people in the giant radius we’re looking at that are gonna get hurt.” 
Innocent people, as always. That had nothing to do with any of this. And no chance to help themselves. No means, either. As fire rained down on them within seconds, without notice, and would trap them. Yes. Someone needed to be on civilian duty. You just… didn’t want it to be you. Not because you were above that sort of thing, you weren’t, that was one of the most important jobs there was. But… 
“I have fought with Nick and with SHIELD and with- probably all of this longer than I realized I was. And that guy, whoever the hell he is-” 
“We’ve got bad news on that front, too.” Interrupting you so suddenly that it cut your little rant short. 
“What now?” Who could it be? Who else could you possibly know that would make this a startling revelation at this point? 
“Haven’t heard the full story. But whisperings around the dingy water cooler out there are that it’s Rogers’ friend.” 
Alright. Not a startling revelation, being that you would have no idea who that was. But kind of… upsetting? Nervewracking? What was the right word here? “How is that possible?”
Tony crossed his arms after shrugging his shoulders. “We’re in a SHIELD sewer after Hydra just exploded out of the woodworks. Anything’s possible at this point, wouldn’t you say? Maybe he got a shot of the same serum. I don’t know. But the point is- this just got personal. So we should let Rogers handle it.” 
But this was just not convincing enough. One of Steve’s old war buddies? Back from the dead- now some crazy super powered killing machine? And going after Steve no less? Hired by the bad guys? There seemed to be a lot of missing pieces here. “You know- there are billions of people on the planet. Especially considering he’s also got a whole lifetime gap. Aren’t we doing the whole- thinking about a zebra when it’s probably a horse thing?” 
“I’m always of the mind to agree with you. But he seems pretty set on this.” “Then I need to talk to him before we leave.” The only way this would start to make any sense. It had to happen, anyway. While you weren’t entirely convinced he was someone Steve knew, you were sure you’d seen something… off about him. Then again. You’d been shot near point blank in the chest and had gone down pretty hard. It was hard to remember what you thought you’d seen. 
There was just a lingering feeling of something not being right. 
“Good luck with that. He could barely look me in the eye. He’s gonna give you the same flight plan. And probably skirt around everything else.” 
This was a fucking mess. And not exactly the right time to be in one. “You? Why? What happened?” 
Tony’s brows knitted before he aimed a dry look your way. “You walked directly in front of a bullet with his name on it- he said it himself. He’s feeling pretty rough about it.” 
There was a whisper here, almost too easy to catch: And he should. You tried to keep your own stare back not… judging or accusing, but… “Did you yell at him?” 
“Yell?” Almost as if he couldn’t believe you’d ask something like that. But as you continued to stare at him, not backing down, he broke, raising his hands in a sign of defense. “Not- I wouldn’t call it yelling- it was a very sternly worded ten minute monologue.” 
“And if he took a shot for me, you’d yell- sorry- ten minute sternly monologue at me, is that right?” 
His answer was quick and biting as he settled his hands on your upper arms in a soft hold, almost begging you to understand with the look he leveled your way. “Much as I like Steve- honey- I’ve known you far longer. And much as we’re all a team- you’re the one I’m worried about, at the end of the day. Because you’re the one that’s important to me. That I get to come home to, when things are settled. That I spend my time with. I didn’t come at him because you put yourself in a situation for him that he couldn’t get out of. Way he told that story- he has every right to feel bad about it. And if you’d died over it-” 
Sooner than either of you had realized, the grip he was holding you in had grown too tight, and you pressed your lips together once, reaching to soothe your hands up his chest. “Tony…” Softly, urging him to calm himself. 
It seemed to break him free of the dark storm cloud he’d been sucked up into. As he took a breath and relaxed his hands, he dropped his head, gathering his thoughts. His eyes were gentle but resolved when he found yours again. “Don’t ask me to explain why it upsets me- the danger you’re constantly in. You know why. I love you. And it’s not about doing the right thing. It’s that you had to make a choice. His life or yours. And he never should have needed you to do that for him.” 
Despite it feeling sort of… wrong to argue with him about this- especially considering how fragile he suddenly was over this, because it was you, you couldn’t bite it all back. This wasn’t Steve’s fault. “He thought it was someone he’d knew-” Right? That was why he’d frozen. 
“If Rhodey pointed a gun at me I wouldn’t just wait for him to shoot me, or for someone to step in front of that bullet for me-”
“You know Rhodey’s alive- if it’s someone that was supposed to be dead-” 
“What- how far you want me to go back- if my dad had dug himself out of his grave- I still wouldn’t-” 
“Alright- alright! Calm down- take it easy!” 
His words had grown sharp and almost terrifying. It was why you knew you shouldn’t have tried to argue with him- he wasn’t going to relent on this. But the darkness that had suddenly manifested was… not an easy thing to deal with. Reaching up, you cupped the sides of his jaw in your palms, easing him away from that edge. 
He took a breath. Stabilizing, almost. And then sinking into your hold on him, shoulders drooping. “Honey… I will sit by your bedside as many times as I need to. Just like you do for me. Because that’s what we’ve put ourselves in. That’s what we decided we were doing. But this was different. Shock or not. He picked a side, when the other side he was on was losing. And he’ll pick it again. I guarantee it.” 
“Why? Why do you think you know that?” Almost begging to understand why he was going in so hard on this. He and Steve respected each other. Got along. And even though you knew he loved you- so desperately so- that didn’t mean that this had to put a wedge in between things. 
As he almost slipped away from you, seeming like he didn’t want to say what he seemed to know, you held his face up. Not letting him escape. Leveling his gaze with yours again. Waiting. “I heard them in the hall, while you were out. Old buddy of Rogers- shows up out of the blue- working for Hydra. They’re leaning pretty hard on the assumption something’s not right upstairs- if it even is him. Who do you think they’re waiting to put in the ring again. On the off chance they’re right. Who do you think they’re willing to use as collateral damage?” 
It was quite a different feeling, your heart breaking over the mistrust of people you thought were friends. “Stop.” But it couldn’t be true. He was hurting. And maybe he’d heard some semblance of this plan- but this couldn’t be the whole of it. Nor did you think he would make it up. So the truth was somewhere in the middle. “We can just talk to them. And find out.” Which was your preferred method of doing things. Nobody ever won running whisper campaigns. 
“I’m not trying to start something. I’m just… doing what they are.” 
“And that is?” 
He answered with a startling conviction. “Picking my side.” 
“Tony…” It was as warming as it was unnerving. “It’s one guy. We don’t know anything yet.” 
You found a little relief as he nodded. “Yeah. I’m not trying to pick apart the team. I’m just… trying to make it clear. Where my loyalties lie.” 
At this- at the very least- you couldn’t help the twitch of a smile. “Never a doubt in my mind.” 
His head dipped in a little, voice lowering. “I will always pick you. It’s always you, for me.”
...at this, it was impossible to not let the unnerving part drift away and instead sink into the warmth, only, instead. His devotion for you touched you right at your core. Easing up on your tiptoes, and bringing him closer, you kissed him carefully, winding your arms around his neck, ignoring the quick spark of pain in your chest. His hands came to steady you, palming over your hips. While you wanted it to go on forever, at this point, having missed him terribly in that small time apart- 
There was work to do. And aside that, as you broke, you let him know quietly, “I’ll always pick you, too.” In the important things- the things where lines had to be drawn. That wasn’t now, you were sure. But… if there ever was a time… you and Tony were a team. Inseparable. 
That was the way it was meant to be. 
“I love you.”  A careful and sure murmur against your lips. 
One that was easy to repeat. “I love you, too, Tony.”

Hey favourite captain America movies scenes?
OH BOY! OH DUDE!
(i wrote this whole thing out with my favourite scenes from all Cap movies and it was so fucking long it was almost embarrassing and definitely unnecessary so i cut out everything but CA:TWS and it’s still so fucking long, i apologise but also i don’t)
My favourite scenes in the winter soldier are Every scene™ Best Movie Ever Made™ Single handedly saved the film industry™ but some personal favourites are:
-”On your left” and Steve having a great time being a Little Shit™/ Sam and Steve’s back and forth
-”I’m here to pick up a fossil”
-Steve jumping out of the plane without a parachute because he’s not just a little shit he’s a Dramatic Little Shit™
-The whole of him infiltrating the ship to free the hostages and the crazy dramatic parkour of it all, like we get it Steve, we see The Beef™, we get it
-”I’m multi-tasking” / ”Hey sailor” (just Natasha™ and everything she ever does and says and is)
-*Puts away shield, takes off helmet* “on va voir” Dramatic. Little. Shit.™
-”Last time I trusted someone I lost an eye” and more of a look into Fury’s past and who he is (!!)
-“This isn’t freedom this is fear” (Every line in that scene and the clear emphasis on the stark difference between Fury’s morals and way of thinking and Steve’s)
-Little kid in the Captain America shirt noticing Steve at the Captain America exhibit/ Steve visiting the exhibit (how many times has he done that? just gone alone to see footage of his old friends? gone to remember why he started fighting? and why he still is?, i’m crying.)
-THE PEGGY SCENE i’m still crying and i’m never stopping 
-Steve visiting Sam’s support group (”You could do whatever you want to do, what makes you happy?” “I dunno” bruh. i am still crying.)
-”Air conditioning is fully operational” and THAT WHOLE ENTIRE SCENE with special EMPHASIS on bucky shooting a bomb on the car and dramatically stepping out the way just before it explodes and crushes him (also the winter soldier theme is beautiful and haunting and THAT SOUNDTRACK THO)
-”EARS EVERYWHERE” “SHEILD COMPROMISED” Fury in Steve’s apartment/ Fury getting shot “Don’t trust anyone” + Steve going after Bucky (“Tell them i’m in pursuit” *Dramatic Music* BUSTS THROUGH FIVE DIFFERENT WALLS. truly the biggest drama queen to exist)
-Natasha’s face when Steve said “he had a metal arm” (give me bucky/nat or give me death!)

PLAYING TO STEVES ALREADY WARY ATTITUDE TOWARDS FURY AND WHAT SHIELD IS UP TO AND HIDING FROM HIM! “He told me not to trust anyone” “I wonder if that included him?” STEVE NOT BUYING IT!

LETTING RED SKULL DIRECTLY INTO THEIR SYSTEMS! “cut off one head two more shall take it’s place” 
- ‘Anthony and Maria Stark die in car crash’ “accidents will happen” (I OUT LOUD GASPED AT THIS PART WHEN I SAW IT IN THE CINEMA FOR THE FIRST TIME STILL GETS ME)

-MARIA HILL! “She’ll want to see him first” FURY FAKED HIS OWN DEATH! “Can’t kill you if you’re already dead” ALSO ((“I wasn’t sure who to trust” then he looks at Natasha???? I’m sure it’s because he knows the past between her and Bucky and didn’t know if it might compromise her IM SURE OF IT))
-BUCKY BACKSTORY + “ the man on the bridge who was he? (…)  i knew him (…)  but i knew him.” + a little look at the torture they put him through, Yikez™.
-”This man declined the noble peace prize, he said peace wasn’t an achievement it was a responsibility” (…) “see it’s stuff like this that gives me trust issues” Great lines. Great characterisation of both Pierce and Fury in just two sentences. 
-”we’re not salvaging anything we’re not just taking down Hydra we’re taking down Shield too”  ”Shield had nothing to do with it” Fury still having faith in a flawed system! because it’s how he knows how to help! Steve being fed up with it! Doesn’t like people who keep secrets! Doesn’t like how Shield and the bad guys seem to always go hand in hand! “Hydra grew right under your nose and nobody noticed” “I noticed” “How many paid the price before you did?”
-Dramatic Bridge scene™ Bucky Flashbacks™ “I can get by on my own” “The thing is you don’t have to, I’m with you till the end of the line pal” Oh you think I stopped crying? Wrong again.
-”IF YOU’RE GONNA FIGHT A WAR YOU GOTTA WEAR A UNIFORM”

-CAPTAIN AMERICA SPEECH OVER THE INTERCOM ON THE SHIELD BASE! “The price of freedom is high, and it’s a price i’m willing to pay.” THATS MY BOY! THATS MY DUDE!
