first off, I absolutely love it. There are three possibilities that came to mind, and I can't decide which is most fun.

Hardison's art - for some reason a con requires Hardison to put Old Nate or some other painting on display somewhere with a false story about its background. Maybe it's a real rush job of a con, so he doesn't have time to create a more ideal forgery or whatever. But Phoenix happens to be investigating in the same area and maybe that one particular artist/style was his favorite or whatever. Anyway he figures out it's a fake, says as much out loud to Maya, compromises the con. Or just insults it in front of Hardison who gets offended, ahahaha. (then later on he meets Nate himself and goes "hmmm")

Parker is posing as an art student. Phoenix interviews her for a case and is very much suspicious because while she definitely does has a wild energy about her it's not the right one. Also she is a hundred percent just making up random art terms sometimes (in between the ones Hardison is feeding her over comms)

Sophie - Either she poses as an art teacher and Phoenix is fully willing to buy that about her, it's just [insert other thing] that he finds suspicious, or they meet in an art gallery where Phoenix is criticizing the works while Sophie is waxing effusive on what she likes about them/their history (which seem to be their favorite ways to digest art). They have a lot of fun talking together, and at it's only at the end of their conversation/a later encounter where they realize their jobs overlap/they're in each others' way.

me, listening to a podcast about a guy in prison based entirely on a coerced confession: what do you mean the members of the jury still think hes guilty now that they know about coerced confessions??? did you not hear four police officers interrogating and shouting at a 19-year-old while hes sobbing through a story inconsistent with the actual evidence???? there was no other evidence, how do you still think hes guilty???

me, ten minutes later: ...oh, right. if they say hes not guilty, that means they sent an innocent kid to prison. yeah, now that uh makes sense.

#kai rambles #i finally listened to bear brook season 2 #and i spent pretty much the entirety of it internally screaming #because this guy has spent over three decades in prison because this ''hotshot detective with the best solved case record'' had a hunch #and then bullied his way into ''proving it'' whilst leveraging criminal charges over people and interrogating people for over 10 hours and #not fucking solving anything considering he got two confessions that were both a) recanted b) inconsistent with the evidence of the case and #c) inconsistent with each other. and then his main suspect who did not confess had to be released without charge because the other two #wouldnt testify to his supposed involvement and that was the entirety of the evidence and then one of the other suspects #a kid in his early 20s got acquitted partly because that detective broke courthouse rules so he and his partner could get their stories #correct and just told the prosecutor he was doing that as if the prosecutor wouldnt tell the judge like its his job on the line too #and then the guy STILL IN PRISON today was convicted because ''why would someone confess to a murder they didnt commit?'' #and i get ''oh it was a different time'' but god the privellege of those jury members to have never been in a situation where you would say #ANYTHING to get someone to stop yelling at you or interrogating you or just hurting you in anyway. hes 19 years old and crying sylvia #also like if a detective has a very high success record #someone should check that because while maybe it is genuinely someone finding the people responsible but thats a blue moon situation #also also the guy in prison jason carroll's attorney recently found the original evidence from the case including fingernail clippings #with the blood of her presumed murdered on them and obviously the attorney cynthia wants them dna tested so she petitioned the coury #*court #and the prosecution objected saying ''there is no result from dna evidence that could exonerate jason carroll'' which is obviously a lie #because they want to keep their conviction record nice and shiny but god fuck that team so much #there was literally a serial killer who lived nearby around that time like if its his blood are you gonna argue jason was still involved?? #im very angry about it #can you tell? #i was angry crying earlier. i put the season on while i played sims expecting it to be more like the first season but nope #i was in for an angry ride instead

I'd just remembered the hilarious potential of Phoenix I'm Indestructible Wright shenanigans when in the Leverage crossover. XDDD Just imagine the chaos of the Team witnessing Phoenix casually surviving impossible things.

Now I'm just picturing the crossover starting with them meeting one another when Parker is driving getaway and runs into Phoenix at speed, flinging him across the street and into a telephone pole, and knocking him out.

They stop the getaway to try and help him, of course, so when he wakes up it's to Eliot fighting off goons while other team members are trying to give him first aid/load him into Lucille to get to a hospital.

He has a slightly sprained ankle, and a bit of a headache, but otherwise he's fine.

I have this theory that even if you roll on a cartel, using your testimony as leverage to request serving your time in not just the same prison, but the same cell as a specific prisoner (who has recently become a highly controversial politically aligned public figure) with no proof of association beyond previous prison visits and the same childhood neighborhood is going to raise some eyebrows. This theory contends that the DOJ could easily believe that you're pretending to roll on your cartel so you can be placed with this guy because the cartel wants him taken out or something. Maybe a powerful anti-lgbtq+ group is paying the cartel to send someone in to assassinate him. Maybe a powerful PRO-lgbtq+ group is paying the cartel to send someone in to assassinate him because they resent his plea. There are so many possibilities that are more likely than the truth.

I therfore posit the following scenario: before agreeing to the deal, the prosecutors demand a reasonable explanation otherwise, and demand details to prove its truth. This results in a HIMYM-esque telling by Mickey of the entire Gallavich story so far. It starts with just him, his attorney, and the prosecuting attorney in an interrogation room, but every time we flash back from a previous Gallavich scene to the present, more and more people are gathered around listening to this complicated and inexplicably beautiful romantic backstory. The prosecutor agrees to place them together (by this point Mickey is sitting in the middle of the bullpen, Styrofoam coffee cup in hand, wrapping up the story as the entire station - uniformed officers, other defense lawyers, even a few arrestees in the holding cell) and everybody cheers. Nobody acknowledges that the telling of the story involved confessions to multiple other felonies. Nobody cares. All anybody cares about is that this great love story continue and that it continue by placing the two boys in a holding cell together.

can i please hear your thoughts about franema. blease. i know they have something going on between them

oh yes yes.... franema happy to talk about it. for starters just everything about how ema behaves herself in aa4 makes me believe that would be some excellent yuri because bitch4bitch femslash is always so important.

in general though i think they're two people whose lives are very centered around their work (as much of the main ace attorney cast is) but they center their work extremely differently in a way i think would cause the other person to question a lot about their own perspective. I think a situation where two characters can really ruffle each others feathers just by existing in proximity has a lot of good ship fodder.

i think in many ways franziska is what ema wanted to be. she's a child prodigy, competent and excelling in her field and earning respect from a very young age. meanwhile when she's several years older than fran was passing the bar ema is still just a high school student just dipping her nose into forensic science for the first time. by the time she's in her mid 20s ema still isn't at the level of career success fran reached in her teen years, being stuck as a detective after failures to pass the forensics exams. and i think it's really worth paying attention to the fact that Detective was specifically the job that lead to her sister's life turning to shit, so i think the longer and longer she stays trapped in that position the more she's gonna start feeling like the walls of her life are closing in on her. i know we don't know where fran is at career wise during this point in the timeline but my personal headcanon is that she ends up doing a lot of work with interprol and primarily specializing in prosecuting cases that take place across various countries' jurisdictions, and has had good success doing so.

Then on the flipside I think Fran see's ema's fully self-motivated passion for forensics as something enviable and admirable. Fran is i think someone who has spent her entire life running through a treadmill of carrots and sticks that dictated what her life was going to be like since she was born. Obviously prosecuting is the family trade and she was started extremely young, then pitted against someone much older for the majority of her childhood. I think the ebb and flow of validation or disinterest from her peers and family was such an overwhelming motivator that she never had the chance to even consider whether or not there's anything she's passionate about. As an adult, i think she does come to find an honest passion in her career but it's nothing like what ema has, it can't be decoupled from external validation, and that's something she's come to understand as a bit of a weakness.

Then interpersonally i feel like since ema is much more personable and socially adjusted than fran, i could feel that being something she instinctively kind of leverages against fran to try and level their playing field. like, okay, franziska may be this bigshot famous prosecutor (just like edgeworth, who ema wants sooo bad to impress) but ema can find ways to embarrass, frustrate, or otherwise fluster her in social settings so that's totally the same as being intellectual equals right. right. right. (<- thoughts of a girl who is definitely being normal about the situation). but i feel like fran could kind of learn to be grateful for the lack of deference ema treats her with and it could be a real first step to them actually getting to know each other better.

i feel like they'd have a lot of similar opinions on the broader aspects of life. i think they'd both be fine with a more casual relationship that involves a lot of traveling for work and isn't particularly romantic by a lot of people's standards. and i think it would be fun for them to fuck each other. overall it just works imo. thank you for coming to my ted talk.
