Miguel! tried to make it obvious that he liked Reader but she mistook his feelings for friendship. Poor baby got friend-zoned so many times because of how obvious Reader was:( One time, Miguel bought Reader followers (specifically roses) before their school's rally and Reader told him what of a supportive friend he was. But he didn't give up. He tried his hardest to let Reader know that he liked her, regardless if she felt the same way back, he would have gotten the message sent out. Reader did her fair share of kindness though. When she can, she'd go to the dojo Miguel is in and cheer him on like it was just practice.

Reader was so relieved when Miguel expressed his feelings towards her. She always thought that he was just being nice and that his actions shouldn't get into her head. Miguel brought her a basket he made with all the things she liked (candy, stuffed animals, drinks, etc.) and a lego flower bouquet.

Miguel! always goes to Reader's rallies to cheer her on. After the rallies, he would praise her on how good she did and how she should consider doing karate with him. He's scared that she'll get hurt but he knows that she can do it.

Eli! first laid eyes on Reader when the cheer squad was practicing after school. He saw a cute girl land a cartwheel with a smile and knew he was in love. He was just "Eli" when he met Reader but as soon as he turned into "Hawk" he automatically turned into a cocky bastard. He grew closer with her and always tried impressing Reader with his Karate moves but she wasn't always impressed. Many girls had a thing for Eli and tried making a move with him but it never worked. He would always find a way to sneak you back into his conversations.

Eli! confessed to you when the two of them were at a party and he was so drunk he just started talking random shit. Reader couldn't care less about what he was saying until her name was brought up. She took out her phone and started recording whatever he was about to say.

"Reader is the girl I have a crush on. Don't tell her though...I'm just so jealous of those ass jocks that she has to cheer for. She's so pretty, smart, and independent. Gosh, I wish she was mine."

Eli! had a smug look on his face but reeked of alcohol. Reader smiled and flicked Eli's forehead, telling him to go to sleep. He replied with "Yes, ma'am" and did as told. She kissed him on the forehead and slept beside him. When the both of them woke up, Reader showed Eli the recording and asked him if there was anything he would like to tell her. He was so shy but he was able to admit his feelings for her. The two then shared a passionate kiss and cuddled for a long time before someone told them to get off the couch. Hey, they were still at a party after all.

Eli! always asks Reader to accompany him to parties. Not only does that keep the unwanted girls away from Eli, but he feels he's safe when he's keeping Reader safe. Plus he wants to have fun with his girl, maybe have a drink or two. The only thing he absolutely hates is when older guys, guys that aren't even in high school anymore, try to hit on Reader like she doesn't have a boyfriend that is ready to kick ass with her. Otherwise, Eli wouldn't ask any girl in the world to party with him but his one and only girlfriend.

Robby! didn't think he would have a chance with her. Due to his financial and overall living conditions, he didn't think it was possible. Reader was just too popular for him. Any interactions with her would result in Robby trying to hide his feelings but he fails every time with the pink shade that appears on his cheeks and that soft smile he always gives Reader when he talks to her is all it'll take to make Reader realize that he wants to be more than friends with her.

Robby! asked Reader to be his girlfriend in the most romantic way possible. He got tips from Daniel and TRUST me when I say that they worked. Which really surprised Reader since how closed off Robby usually was Robby and Reader were hanging out during the Fourth of July at a park waiting for the fireworks show to start. He brought chips, sodas, and a handwritten note. A few seconds before the show started, he handed the note to her and asked her to open it. The note read, "Roses are red. Violets are blue. The sky is beautiful but not as beautiful as you". As she read the note, the fireworks started to bang. She looked at Robby with so much awe as he asked, "Reader, may I please be your boyfriend?" She cupped his face and Robby leaned in for a kiss. A kiss under the fireworks.

Reader doesn't mind at all that Robby doesn't take her to big fancy dates. In fact, she prefers small dates instead of big ones such as crafting, picnics, or even hanging in his house. Well, his mom's house. The second you two hang out in Johnny's small ass apartment, then Johnny would burst into the room while handing Robby a condom and asking him to stay safe. Reader can't stop laughing every time this happens. Robby is just annoyed that his dad thinks he would do sexual activities in his house.

"Better safe than sorry" Johnny threw a condom packet at Robby and closed the door shut. Robby's face turned red and threw the condom in the trash. Reader was just there cackling non-stop while Robby seemed like he didn't want to talk to his dad ever again.

Demetri! like Robby didn't think that Reader would ever like him back at all. His little phase with Yasmine faded quickly when he found out what a bitch Yasmine was to literally everyone (pls pretend that this is canon). He was just a nerdy lanky freak who hung out with the "boy with the lip" who later left him just to be cool. Reader was there for Demetri when Eli left him. She wanted him to be beside her at all times. Reader invited Demetri to watch her practice. When he does come, he would sit on the bleachers reading comics or doing homework. Anytime he sees a couple in the comic book he's reading, he would imagine that it's you two together, fighting crime. (or wtvr they're doing)

Demetri! is a shy baby and was practically clueless about how to ask Reader out. He thought of everything but he was either doing too little or too much. He didn't want her to think he was a loser geek that everyone made fun of. He wanted to be more than that. More than what everyone pictures him to be. His confession was simple. He slid a note into your locker stating that you should meet him after school, in the fields for something.

Once reader got there, she was in her cheer uniform and holding her silly pom poms. Demetri looked down at her with a deep blush and it was easy to make out that he was sweating. Demetri couldn't get his words out but before he was able to make words out, Reader cut him off,

"Would you like to go out sometime?" She asked him. A shocked expression appeared on his face. "Uhm sure, ya'know I was gonna ask you that". He was smiling hard, like really hard. Reader chuckled and held out her hand. "Well Demetri, care to accompany me in practice," she said in an old-fashioned tone. He held her hand in response, "Why yes Reader, I would love to" he raised his brow and the two laughed it off walking back to the gym.

People didn't get why Reader would date someone like Demteri but she didn't care. Any time he came back from Comic-Con and bought something back for her, she'd wear it to school. Her friends would look at her funny and ask "Why would you wear nerdy shit like that? You look like a geek" but Reader wouldn't care and that's what Demetri loved about her the most. Just because she was popular, it didn't mean that she couldn't be herself around her friends. Demetri loved teaching Reader nerdy things about him, such as the difference between DC and Marvel, which animes were "peak", and board games to play. Sometimes Reader would try to teach him how to do stunts but that obviously results him into ripping his pants.

All right so obviously I have to change some things around in terms of story. In this Tai Lung when finding out he is not the Dragon Warrior decides to continue training at the Jade Palace as a master, he is considerably less violent but will still be sassy, and in this au he is actually good friends with Po. This one will be small do to a lack of specificity on what you want and nothing to really base off of.

Tai Lung x Leopard Reader (GN)

Tai Lung has been training for a while and Y/N just wants to cuddle

3rd Person P.O.V.

Sounds of kung fu could be heard from the pool of sacred tears as Master Tai Lung was training with the Dragon Warrior, Po.

“If that is all you can do Panda I just might claim the title of Dragon Warrior yet,” Tai Lung jokingly mocked as the two dueled.

“Don’t start thinking this fight is over just yet Tai Lung, KICK OF AWESOMENESS!!!!” Po yelled as he kicked at Tai Lung’s stomach.

“Po you know I can easily block that right?” Tai Lung said as he flips Po over him.

“Yeah but it gives me the chance to do this,” Po revealed as he stepped on Tai Lungs tail.

“AHH! Mother of - ”

“Tai Lung are you still training!” A voice yelled, one that is able to strike fear into the hearts of legendary warriors such as Tai Lung, Po, and even Master Shifu himself.

1st Person P.O.V.

Here I am walking all the way up to the pool of sacred tears when Tai Lung said he would be done training hours ago, after the recent attack on the Valley by Kai he started training more and more and it is like I barely see him any more. I get he wants to train to protect the people of the Valley but I still want him to come home before I go to sleep.

Once I get to the top of the mountain I see Po and Tai Lung shivering which is weird because even if we are this high up it is still pretty warm out.

“You promised to be home hours ago,” I angrily reminded my partner.

“I’m sorry dear you see we just lost track of time,” He said honestly and guiltily.

“Heroes of the Valley my butt you two would lose your heads without me and Shifu here to make sure you don’t overwork yourselves come,” The statement came from a place of care as me and Tai Lung were partners in every way, romantically, as well as in Kung Fu. While I do not train in the ancient art and am smaller than the likes of him and Po, and would likely easily lose most fights, I make sure Tai Lung takes care of himself.

“You’re right dear, let’s go home and rest,” He suggested.

We ate dinner in silence and were now in bed, also in silence.

“Are you still made at me Y/N?” He asked.

I growled in response, confirming his question.

“I’m sorry that we were training for so long, and I know it probably does not make up for it but we did genuinely lose track of time,” He apologized.

“But why do you have to train so much? I want you to be home more,” I asked.

“When Kai attacked I was almost powerless to stop him, I didn’t want to have that feeling of you not being safe anymore, I want to always be able to protect you,” He said.

I suddenly curl up into him and bury my face into his chest, “Just shut it you big lug,”

Kay's comments: The thing with CQL is that I love it dearly, but also, there are so many plotholes due to how it was adapted from the source material and I actually love those plotholes too, because that's where fanfic authors can make themselves comfortable and write so many creative stories. This story explores how CQL Wangxian's relationship is actually really great and it makes no sense for freshly-resurrected Wei Wuxian to run away from Lan Wangji when he appears in Mo village and I love this so much. The cherry on top is the fact that miixz and Admiranda are both really great writers that always draw me in and I'm excited to see how this story might continue! Excerpt: In the distance, Wei Wuxian hears the Lan juniors scramble to their feet, overhearing something about how they’ll be acting in the west courtyard tonight. It’s good to know where he can find them, but he doesn’t mind the loss of the rest of their conversation. Whatever they’ve come here for is definitely something to look into, but he’s in no hurry to learn about it. If their presence is somehow related to his return, he doubts any of them know it. No one would knowingly send a group of young cultivators anywhere near the scourge of the cultivation world. But for once, this works in his favor. For one thing, young cultivators are bound to be informed on the state of the world, and most importantly, these particular boys should know about the one he wants to meet. Just a little bit longer, he thinks, looking at the cuts in his wrist. I’ll see this through, then I’ll find my way back to you, Lan Zhan.

Ranking the ninja by their hair.

because.. I don’t know the idea came to me. So. We’re going from the worst of the worst to the absolute best. And you all have to suffer through it :). Kai fans I’m sorry but also kinda not.

#6. Kai.

Greasy. Gross. Unkempt. Splitting. Dying slowly. If it’s not greasy it’s dry and coarse. The only thing keeping it even mildly acceptable in the eyes of society is his overuse of hair products that he isn’t even using properly which results in his hair continuing to die on his scalp despite the lazy attempt to hide how miserable it is. Please for the sake of all that is holy in this world fix your hair Kai please. The ninja beg daily. The Kai does not listen.

#5. Zane.

He has no hair technically speaking since he’s a Nindroid thus making him hard to rank since we don’t really know what his hair is made of, but it’s still never going to be worse than Kai’s so I’m putting him here as it’s a safe spot.

#4. Lloyd.

Generally as a kid he couldn’t care less for self care. He’d often avoid doing it purely to spite anyone who told him to brush his hair or to take a shower, regardless of if it were a teacher or kid at Darkleys or one of the Ninja when they were babysitting him. How dare they make him take care of himself!

Of course, eventually the Ninja started doing it instead. Which has… 50/50 results. At first he just kept his bowl cut because he thought it was the coolest thing ever, so Nya would help him take care of it.

When the Tomorrows tea hit, he decided to try something new, so he tried to style it after Garmadon’s hair, hence his hairstyle being shorter. Of course, Kai was the first to help him fix his hair. And… Well… Kai. It wasn’t… good… so eventually the others all started competing instead. Lloyd still wouldn’t take care of it himself because he can’t be bothered to and can’t get into the habit, so it usually fell to the others to do so.

Eventually Cole taught him how to do his hair well and gave him advice (some of which was literally ignore whatever Kai says) so he can do it himself now!! Though, during bad days or when he’s feeling under the weather he still tends to forget.

#3. Jay.

Jay actually has pretty good hair, despite living in a junkyard. His hair has always been naturally poofy (due to his dormant lightning powers) which he liked as a kid, but it got on his nerves as a teenager, so he’d try to flatten it down a lot with hair products and what not. He always used a lot of good self-care routines and regularly brushed, so his hair was extremely soft. He dislikes having sand and dust in it so he takes good care of it.

After growing closer to his lightning powers though, his hair started fizzling and poofing up and going haywire again, except the constant charge he was exerting meant it just. Couldn’t be contained regardless what he tried. So he settled for this. He still tries to take good care of it but it’s generally much more difficult to brush/comb, so he has a harder time now.

Despite all his difficulties with his frizzly hair, Nya loves it, so he can make an attempt for her <3

#2. Nya.

While Nya at first having grown up in a pretty poor village and with little money together with Kai never really had the resources to really take good care of her hair (or herself for that matter), she always sort of cared for how it felt. She doesn’t like when it’s coarse or anything so she had a handmade comb that she always used to at least get tangles out and smoothen it a bit, though she also kept her hair pretty short since it was difficult. To take care of anything longer than shoulder length with the resources they had.

When she started taking up jobs after joining the ninja and earning her own money, she used some of it to do things she never was able to before like get a hair brush and hair products, buy new clothes for herself, and even get a hairdresser appointment. Nya doesn’t really care for her looks in general, but she does enjoy wearing things she likes and having clean hair annd stuff, so ever since experiencing a hairdresser appointment she has never looked back. She started doing different styles and bought scrunchies and asked for tips on what hair products to use, the whole bunch. She’s been trying to convince Kai to at least learn a bit about hair care as well, but he insists he doesn’t need any help. Unfortunately.

The only reason she’s second is because while she does just genuinely like the feeling of having well kept hair, she can and will skip days if she’s having a bad day or if she’s just. Kind of out of it. She’s not the type to care too much if she ignores it every now and then since her habit of it is just based off of what she finds comfortable so if her comfort and brushing hair is at odds she just won’t do it.

part of you knew it was wishful thinking to believe vampires couldn't sense period blood. your heretic best friend proves that true when he comes over to see you. in fact, to him, it smells even sweeter than the blood you normally offer, and he practically begs you for a taste. (heretic!kai) (virgin!kai)

As soon as you get back from the bathroom, your phone gets a new message. Checking it, you see it’s your best friend.

Kai: hi princess, are you free tonight? i miss you. movie night?

You bite your lip, fighting the urge to say ‘yes’. The two of you haven’t had a night to yourselves in awhile, and a movie night sounds like heaven. Only one thing - your period has come three days early, and Kai’s a recently turned heretic. You don’t know if vampires can sense that type of blood the same way they can with venous blood, but if they can, that’ll lead to a pretty embarrassing situation that you don’t think you can handle. Not that Kai won’t be a gentleman, because you know he always is with you, but just the thought of explaining that to your best friend sounds less than appealing. Besides, periods tend to make you way more needy than usual, and that crush you’ve been harboring does not need to be revealed.

Sighing, you type a reply.

Y/N: i’m not feeling great today. another day?

The minute you hit send, you know you chose the wrong words. Kai answers immediately.

Kai: you okay?? anything i can help with? if you’re sad, i don’t want you alone :(

Fuck, why’d you tell him that?

Y/N: no, i’m okay, i promise. just a stomach bug. i don’t want you to catch it

Kai: i can’t get sick, i’m a heretic now. plz let me help you

Kai: i’ll get you some soup from the grill and we can watch your favorite movie

Y/N: idk i just don’t think it’s a good time rn

Kai: oh, okay

Kai: i didn’t do anything wrong, did i?

It’s a losing battle with Kai. It always is. He’s always so adamant about keeping you company, especially at times you don’t feel well, and most of the time, you’ve given into his convincing. But in the past, he’d only been a witch. His vampirism is an unfortunate game-changer.

Kai: y/n, please, i’m worried

Kai: take a nap if u want, just let me come and make sure you’re okay

Kai: you can use me as a pillow again :)

The needy part of your mind takes over, and you answer without thinking twice.

Y/N: alright, but i might go to bed really early

Kai: that’s okay :)) i’ll be there in 2

Great job, Y/N. Now you’ve fucked up. How are you going to explain this??

In the two minutes that you have to spare, you burn some sage, hoping that smell will overpower the more obvious one. Your fingers are crossed that maybe vampires can’t detect periods, but you have a feeling that’s wishful thinking. The knock on your door comes sooner than anticipated.

Despite your worries, you can’t help the happiness that consumes you when you see Kai at your door. “Hi!” You exclaim, rushing forward to hug him.

The boy hugs you back with one arm, the other full of soup and snacks, then grins at you when you separate. “I know you aren’t feeling well, so I’ll keep my voice down and try to talk less. I just don’t want you alone when you’re sick, y’know?”

“I know,” you nod, leading him to the kitchen to open the takeout boxes. “Thank you for caring.”

“I’ll always care about you. Mhm, is that sage?”

“Yeah, sorry. I was hoping it would make me feel better.”

“It should. I mean, it’ll at least help. Is there anything else I can do?”

“Hmm, all I need is you, this soup, and a good movie, and I’ll feel okay eventually, m’kay?”

He’s unsure about the truth in your statement, but agrees anyway.

The two of you sit on your couch, soups in hand, sharing a blanket across your lap. You decided on a stupid movie that’ll make you both laugh, and try not to think too much about the cramping in your abdomen. As the movie goes on and Kai begins to get lost in it, you start to feel a little more comfortable. Maybe your sage trick worked, or maybe it is undetectable to vampires. Either way, you let yourself curl into his side, enjoying your closeness. You don’t miss him putting an arm around you to pull you closer, and the gesture makes your heart flutter.

About an hour later, the midol you took is finally kicking in, and the pain is lessening more and more. Sighing in relief, you stretch your legs out for a second, easing those cramps, before tucking them back under you. In that moment, though, you forget that movements like those might trigger blood flow, which may then trigger the heretic’s bloodlust. And if he can smell period blood, that most certainly did it.

With a glance up to Kai, you almost see the gears turning in his head. Fuck.

“Hey, Y/N?”

“Mhm?”

“Do you smell blood?”

“Um, no. Why?”

“I don’t know, but out of nowhere, I do.”

“Maybe I got a cut from this plastic lid?” You refer to the container you’ve been, thankfully, playing with for the last half hour.

Kai immediately grabs your hands to check. “No, no cuts.”

“Maybe it’s the neighbor?”

“Too close to be the neighbor. You sure you aren’t bleeding anywhere?”

“I’m okay, I promise. I’m not hurt.” It’s not a total lie. You aren’t hurt, you said. You hadn’t confirmed nor denied if you were actually bleeding.

“Can I check?”

“What?”

“Check for blood? Just to be sure.”

Panic courses through your body. “No,” you blurt out. You even move a little away from him without realizing, but then immediately regret it.

Kai tenses, “okay. I’m sorry.”

“Wait. Fuck, okay. Kai?”

“Yes?”

“Chill, Y/N, it’ll be fine.” You tell yourself out loud, concerning him even more. “Okay, I actually am bleeding, but it’s nothing you need to worry about.”

“Wait, what do you mean?”

“It’s natural, supposed to happen, but I can’t control it.”

“Please explain, Y/N. What is it? Does it hurt?”

“Okay. It’s a period, women get them every month, and like I said, it’s totally normal. They cause a lot of stomach cramping and such, which is why I was in pain earlier, but I took something for it and I’m okay now. But basically, in simple terms, when women don’t get pregnant, their body gets mad and retaliates by shedding the lining of the uterus. This results in the lining, and tissues, and blood, and some other things to be drained from the body via…” you gesture to the lower half of your body. “So no, I can’t control it, but I can stop it from leaking with pads and tampons, whatever’s on hand. But right now, the cramps and pain are gone, but the blood doesn’t stop.”

As you explain it, you see his eyes darken. The veins underneath turn to a purple-ish, black, and you think you know exactly what’s happening.

“Can I… can I taste it?”

“What?”

“The blood.”

Hell yes, please, you want to say. But at the same time, that’s a step too far into intimacy that you haven’t taken. “Um, I don’t know.”

“It smells so good, I need it.”

You try to swallow the butterflies swarming in your stomach. “Kai, I’m sorry. You can feed from my neck or wrist, but we can’t-... I can’t-” you don’t know how to finish that sentence.

Slowly, he nods, the bloodlust taking over.

“Okay,” you lift your wrist up to his mouth, “drink, baby.” It’s a pet name you use for him all the time, but this time, both of you can feel something more.

Kai licks the spot where he plans to bite, then in one quick motion, sinks his teeth into your skin. You gasp for a second, but then start to enjoy the feeling. He’s fed off you more times than you can count and it always delivers the same pleasure.

Kai drinks for a few seconds, but detaches way too soon. There’s no way he’s full from that.

Though, you get your answer in the form of a desperate plea, “Y/N, I need it. There’s something different about it. I can smell it, it’s so good.”

“Kai… c’mon, drink.” You lift your wrist up again, but the stubborn boy literally refuses to latch. “What about here?” You offer your neck, even tracing your hand along your jugular.

“Just a taste, please, Y/N.”

Once again, a losing battle. His determination plus your increasing arousal at the thought of it all betrays you, and before you know it, you’re laying back on the couch, his fingertips at the waistband of your leggings.

“We shouldn’t be doing this.”

“Do you want me to stop?” He offers the option, even though you know he’s silently begging you to say ‘no’.

“No,” you admit.

He looks at you with lust-filled eyes - an expression you’ve never seen before on him. “If you change your mind, I will.”

“Okay. Hey, can you put something down on the couch? I don’t want to bleed on it and have a big, embarrassing stain.”

The heretic nods, fetching a towel, then continues. He puts it under you as soon as your leggings and panties are gone, then for a minute, just stares. No blood is visible, but he can smell it. It’s strong, and mixed with the intoxicatingly sweet smell of your arousal. His heartbeat quickens, pants tighten, and he looks at you for one more consent.

“Go ahead. I trust you.”

Kai doesn’t know whether to use his mouth or a finger first. One thing he’s never told you: he’s a virgin. Yet the need for this blood is too strong to dive into that right now, and he fights with himself before making a decision.

Two fingers enter you, they move about, coating them evenly, and then he sucks them off again. This time, there was more blood. His eyes start to turn black again, and he knows he needs better access.

You sign in relief when Kai moves his body down, mouth making its way towards your heat. Unlike before, there’s no hesitancy as he obeys your command. Blood from his lips seeps into your mouth, giving you a chance to taste yourself, quite literally. As the metallic taste drips down your throat, you find yourself moaning again. Kai’s lips curl into a smile.

Then, moments later, his head is dipping back down, tongue re-entering your heat. He seems to have gotten more confidence now, alternating between slurping blood from your entrance, and sucking at your clit. His left hand covers the open wound on your thigh, preventing too much blood loss. Though you both know you have to tend to it soon.

“I’m so close, Kai.”

“To be honest, I could’ve kept going. I could drown in your blood. But I could never hurt you, so I had to stop. Plus, I didn’t want to overstimulate you too much, and I think you started to feel that way when you came.”

He swallows, as if debating what to say next. “Um, thank you. For both, letting me feed, and letting me taste you.”

“Well worry not, because I’m not going anywhere, pumpkin.”

You had looked down because of your blushing, but his confession snaps your eyes back up to face him. “Oh my god, I love you, too.”

For a second, the two of you just stare at each other. Then, out of nowhere, he grabs your shoulders and pulls you into a hug. You squeal, let out a laugh, and turn to kiss him. He’s gentle, yet hungry for you, and the combination drives you insane. When you separate, he looks nervous again.

“Kai…?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Are you sure I was okay?”

“What do you mean?”

“The sex, or at least, what of it we did.”

“What?! Are you crazy? I’m dead serious, Kai, that was the best I’ve ever experienced.”

“Okay. Good. Because, uh…”

You duck your head, waiting for him to continue.

“You’re, uh, my first.”

“Wait, what?”

“Um-”

“You’re joking?”

“No.”

“There is no way.”

“Is that okay? I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”

“Malachai-”

“Ew, don’t call me that.”

“-Parker.”

He bites his lip, looking anywhere but at your face.

“There’s no fucking way you’ve never done this before.”

“I mean, I’ve touched myself in the prison world plenty of times.” The sociopathic bluntness returns. Coincidentally, your blush also returns.

“But you’ve never touched, eaten out, anything with a woman?”

“Not until you.”

“You’re mine,” you look him in the eye. He meets your gaze, not expecting the possessiveness. It’s usually him being overly protective of you. “You’re mine, and no one else’s, you fucking sex god.”

It’s his turn to blush, and he does so a deep red. It matches the blood staining his teeth, Your blood. “I don’t want anyone else but you.”

“Good. Now kiss me, and let’s watch this movie until you get hungry again.”

Oh my goodness, I could go on forever about him and what I imagine his backstory to be. I’m so sorry for how long this will be, but you’ve unleashed a can of worms and I thank you for that! So here we go!

It started with me being convinced that if Nico and Kai ever met, they would have a rivalry going on and Levi and Amelia would find it adorable yet slightly annoying cuz they get along so well. And Levi would tell Nico not to annoy his mentor’s partner, but Amelia would just laugh.

We don’t know much about where Nico’s from or his family, except that he’s not out to them even thou he was out to people in his daily life and they can be really critical. So I imagine he grew up in a traditional Korean Italian home (cuz Alex Landi is Korean Italian, and I have person experience with homophobic Italian family members so I’m projecting). He’s a middle child with two brothers. He gives off competitive energy that comes with having siblings, and kinda seems like he’s used to being overlooked and fighting for attention, like a middle child.

His older brother (I’m going to refer to him as Siwon since that’s who I imagine his actor to be) is something his parents deem successful, I’m thinking a lawyer cuz I want Nico to have a totally different career path then him. He was an honours student, always top of his class. He has a beautiful wife (who he met in highschool), a son and a daughter on the way. His life is perfect in his parents eyes. He’s maybe two or three years older than Nico. Nico always felt like he was in his brother’s shadow, but he respected and looked up to him. I feel like their parents would constantly be comparing the two, like “Siwon was valedictorian, are you going to be?” and “Nico was nominated for homecoming king, are you nominated for prom king?”

His younger brother (referred to as Rowoon for the same reason as his older brother) is five or six years younger, and he’s spoiled by their parents. While they’re critical of the older two, the youngest is their pride and joy and they don’t mind him doing whatever he wants because the other two are successful enough. Rowoon loves Nico and idolizes him in almost the same way that Nico did with his older brother. But Nico is much kinder and receptive to it, and he’s always supportive to Rowoon. I think Rowoon would have much more natural talent and smarts, so he doesn’t have to work as hard as the other two and he has a lot less pressure. While the other two were expected to have a 98-100% average in everything, Rowoon’s sitting at like 95% and their parents are still proud of him.

Nico was raised with traditional catholic Italian and Korean views being shoved at him. So when he starts realizing he might like boys, it’s not exactly something he can come out and say or act on while he’s living with his parents. He probably wanted to go into sports, (likely baseball or soccer, but we’ll go with baseball cuz of his job with the mariners) rather then law or med school. He played baseball in highschool, getting scholarships to play for a few varsity teams. Only for his parents to push him to go to law school like Siwon, which he reluctantly agrees, figuring he can go in to sports law.

While Nico is in his last year of highschool, early on in the year, he meets this boy who he has a crush on. And they start seeing each other in secret. Until one night Siwon catches them, probably the cliche making out in Nico’s room when his brother barges in and freaks out. He kicks the boy out and tells Nico he needs to stop seeing him. Nico says he will as long as his brother doesn’t tell their parents and Siwon agrees, saying their parents can never find out. But having Siwon react in such a negative way ruins the image Nico had of him. So he decides he doesn’t want to go to law school, he wants to persue baseball mostly in defiance.

His parents hate that idea, and really push for him to still go to law school. He ignores them and does start to persue baseball in his undergrad, taking one of the scholar ships he was offered. He’s incredibly talented so while they aren’t happy, his parents still support him as long as he continues to be one of the best players on his team and maintains his high grades.

In his first year he gets an injury, something that requires surgery to fix. But the surgery goes wrong, and his career in baseball is over before it could ever really start. Despite pushing himself with physio and working as hard as he can to get back to being able to play, it’s just not possible in the time frame he would need for professional sports. He takes it incredibly hard, and while Rowoon is his major support system, his parents and Siwon treat it like a failure. So Nico decides to go to med school, to become an orthopaedic surgeon and make sure no one else has to go through what he did. His parents are ecstatic about the change, and it’s the first time he feels like they’re actually proud of him.

He quickly catches up, becoming top of his classes. He thrives in university, coming out to his friends and he’s genuinely happy.

But he still feels like he has to hide who he is when he’s at home and he hates it. He never has a boyfriend for long, because then he’d have to deal with bringing them home and coming out. It never mattered cuz he hadn’t met anyone he wanted to be with long term. But it’s still a massive part of his identity that he’s hiding from his parents and Rowoon, still scared they’d react in the same way his Siwon did. And while he would probably come out to his parents and risk it, he doesn’t want to loose Rowoon or put him at odds with their parents, especially while he’s still living with them.

So years later when he meets Levi, he doesn’t want to have to hide who he is in the only place he can be open. He’s hypocritical because he thinks Levi doesn’t have as much to loose as Nico and he sees it as wasted opportunity. And Nico doesn’t want to be that highschool boy his brother kicked out of his room all those years ago. He doesn’t want Levi to be ashamed of him like Nico was of that boy, and he doesn’t want the memories of being ashamed of himself and who he was to come back while Levi discovers his own sexuality.

Nico’s never had someone he cares that much about, never wanted to actually bring someone home to meet his parents or his brothers. But then he falls hard for Levi and suddenly it’s turning serious and he doesn’t know what to do about it. So he’s awkward and hypocritical and a pretty terrible boyfriend at times, but he is trying.

Then he accidentally kills a patient. And Siwon is showing up to make sure legally he doesn’t get in trouble. His parents find out through Siwon, and they seem disappointed which only adds to his pain. And Levi being overbearing while Siwon is in town doesn’t help, because he doesn’t want his brother to find out he has a serious relationship with a man. He’s also not good with emotions, or people seeing him when he’s emotional, which is why he pulls away so much.

And then the pandemic happens and he really misses Levi. He knows he’s not emotionally ready to commit to anyone yet, and they aren’t really good for each other at the time. But he figures if he can have Levi in any way he’s going to take it, cuz the world is a mess and he needs some kind of happiness. When Levi basically gives him the ultimatum of serious relationship or nothing, he chooses serious relationship. Because he doesn’t want to loose Levi, and it’s a huge wake up call that he really does care about someone in a way he never had before.

I think Levi pushing Nico away after he opened up to Levi hurt, really bad. Cuz Nico had never let himself be that vulnerable with another person, and he didn’t know how to cope with that. So he gave Levi the space that he wanted when he went through a similar experience. Not really realizing that Levi needed him to be there and to fight for them, until Levi told him. But even though he’s come so far and started to unravel his closed off, emotionless persona adopted by someone who’s parents didn’t let them be a child, Nico knows he can’t give Levi what he wants, not when he’s still dealing with his own internalized homophobia and inability to be honest with himself and his family. He thinks Levi deserves someone who is ready to be all in, and even though he thought he could be, that’s not him, not yet.

Nico saying his default is numb is really telling that he can’t process his feelings right away, he suppresses them. Which would make sense if he’s grown up with critical parents that expect him to be perfect all the time. He wouldn’t know how to deal with failure or rejection, because he’s never had the luxury of doing any of those things. Even loosing his ability to play baseball professionally wouldn’t have been a failure to him, because it led him to being a surgeon which his parents were much happier about. And I think that reflects in his relationships too, that when there’s any kind of conflict he just shuts down, he goes numb. He either gets overly agreeable or he pulls away from the situation entirely. And I think he started to realize that it’s not a healthy coping mechanism after his talk with Levi in the elevator.

So he jumps at the opportunity to leave and work for the Mariners. It’s a dream job, it’s one of the reason he decided to go to med school in the first place, and it gives him and Levi space to figure themselves out. It lets Levi experience different relationships and find himself, while Nico learns to deal with his emotions and not suppress them. But while he’s there, he finds out he hates it. He doesn’t like having to tell these athletes that their careers are over, he doesn’t like feeling like he failed him when there was nothing he could do. It reminds him of when he was going through the exact same thing. Even if his success rate is the highest it’s ever been, he still doesn’t think he’s good enough. Saving fifty patients doesn’t mean anything if there’s even one he can’t.

And then Rowoon finishes his undergraduate and moves out of their parents house. He goes to visit Nico and they have a long talk about what Rowoon wants to do with his career. He decided a long time ago that he wanted to follow in Nico’s footsteps and go in to medicine. And while he’s visiting, he sees that Nico’s background is still a photo of him and Levi, so Rowoon asks if that’s Nico’s boyfriend. And Nico is shocked because he didn’t know Rowoon knew. They have a heart to heart, and Nico realizes he doesn’t have to hide who he is anymore. Even if his parents aren’t happy with him, he has his little brother’s love and support, which is all that’s ever really mattered to him anyway. And even if he isn’t perfect, there are still people who will love him.

So he leaves his job and goes back to Grey-Sloan, mostly because he preferred it, but also with the hope that he and Levi can at least be friends again. He wins Levi back, and finally introduces him to Rowoon. And to show Levi he really has changed, that he really is committed to their relationship, he invites Levi to his parent’s for Christmas dinner. It goes over horribly, his dad almost kicks them out and only relents to letting them stay when his mother says they can at least finish dinner, as it’s the holidays. It’s worth it to see the look of horror on Siwon’s face when he says Levi is his boyfriend, and the look of admiration Rowoon gives him when he holds Levi’s hand as they say goodbye.

I think Nico coming back this next season will be him saying I was just trying to give you space, but I always loved you and I will always be here for you when you’re ready. It’s kind of a repeat of the last time they got back together, but I’m hoping it’ll stick this time and they can have their happy ending. If nothing else, I just want them to keep his personality somewhat consistent.

I’ll finish with my Kai vs Nico thing that started it all! We never learn where he went to school, or how old he is. We can guess he’s early 30’s when he’s first introduced (I’m assuming he was on track with the norm, so when he’s introduced, he’s in his fellowship and he’d be 30-31). What we know about Kai (thanks to my best friend who has an incredible memory) is they went to John Hopkins a few years after Amelia. E.R. is only a year older then Alex, which I’m taking to mean their characters are a year apart as well. So we’ll say Nico is 31 when he’s introduced, meaning Kai would be 32.

While they wouldn’t have much overlap if Nico went to med school at John Hopkins while Kai was going for their phd, they could have very well done their undergrad at the same university and that’s where I think the rivalry would have started.

Kai is smart as hell, and I have no doubt they would be top of their classes. I think depending on the class it would go back and forth, but I really do think Kai would be beat Nico more often and he would hate that. It’s a healthy rivalry, there’s no actual animosity. I see them both as fun and sarcastic people, so I think they’d have amazing banter. And someone like Kai being smarter then Nico wouldn’t bother him as much, because they just have this aura that makes them impossible to hate? Even thou Nico is really frustrated that someone scored higher on a test, he wouldn’t really be too hard on himself if it’s Kai that beat him.

Because I can see him being really upset with himself the first time it happens, and he swears it will never happen again. So he pushes himself even harder for the next test and he does beat Kai. And then Kai would give the most relaxed non-reaction, would probably even congratulate him, and Nico wouldn’t know how to process that. He’s be so used to Siwon taking any loss so poorly, that someone being almost happy for him beating them is too foreign for him to comprehend. It would be the first step to Nico relaxing a little bit on his perfect persona, and allowing himself to slip. Which sets him up for when we meet him in the show, he’s a lot more chill and easy going, but still guarded.

This is so long omg, I’ll start to wrap it up!

Flash forward to Nico and Levi dating, and Kai and Amelia dating (no they never broke up in my head, they’re happy and will be for the rest of their lives, it’s fine. But even if they did, they found their way back to each other like Nico and Levi). Every time Kai comes to visit Amelia, they bicker with Nico. And no one knows it’s light hearted except the two of them. It would stress Levi out, thinking Nico was fighting with his mentor’s partner. I like the idea of Levi going in to general surgery, so while Amelia isn’t wouldn’t be the head of his department, she will always be a mentor figure to him and someone he respects.

Flash forward again, Rowoon does follow in Nico’s footsteps and comes to Grey-Sloan for his internship. He starts off thinking he’ll go in to ortho like his brother but quickly finds he gravitates more towards neuro. And then Kai comes to work on a project with Amelia, and they pick Rowoon to help them out. And he loves the research aspect of their project. He starts looking into it more and more. And ultimately decides, with the help of Kai, to switch into neuroscience rather then complete his surgical internship.

Nico is of course devastated that his little brother chose to work with Kai over him. But he’s a good older brother and supports everything Rowoon does, even if it means listening to him talk about how amazing Kai and the research they’re doing is for hours.

Gyu is such subby puppy material!! I have a feeling he'll be less well-behaved, but maybe he just does it because he loves the reaction he gets from you. I can see him doing a lot of licking - he would probably be super excited desperate to give you head. I think he'd be into the whole dress-up, and crawling around on all fours because he gets excited at how inferior he feels when you're towering over him. I'm guessing the sex would always be wild because he can be bratty and make mistakes since he's just a pup that needs to be trained. But there's also the soft side of tummy rubs and hair stroking (especially his long hair!!!)

Soobin

I feel like this is obvious already with him having the bunny nickname and everything but there's something about Soobin that has me thinking he’ll be all normal until one day he slips and gets excited at the mention of being your pet. From then on you'd buy him pretty things to wear like collars or animal ears, or tailed buttplugs and he'd enjoy the excitement of how special you make him feel. I feel like Soobin will be well-behaved and trained because he loves getting treats and because he knows that the slightest deprivation of touch will drive him insane so he can't imagine how he would handle a punishment (but maybe he'd be intrigued to see you mad at least once).

MIDDLE

Huening Kai

I feel like Hyuka would be willing to try after you suggest it, but would never suggest it himself. I think Kai is similar to Soobin in the sense that he tries to be as good as possible. He lives for all the praise you give e.g “good boy/pup” whenever he does well. I think the dynamic here will be super soft, with lots of tummy rubs and laying on your lap. Hyuka is the type to be down bad, so he'll do anything to make you happy and that's why when you gift him with a cute animal outfit for the evening, he shyly puts it on and you have him standing in front of the mirror, cooing at how good he looks. Maybe you'll do things in front of the mirror too (iykyk) just so you can show him how good he looks as your pet.

Yeonjun

I was really debating Yeonjun's position for this, but I think he is on par with Hyuka - he wouldn't suggest it first and wouldn't be entirely into it at the start. I think it will take getting used to and he'd only do it on some nights when you want to take control/ when he's feeling a little submissive. I kinda think the humiliation of being downgraded to a pet is the thing that turns him on, especially when you make him do things like crawl or beg.

LEAST

Taehyun

I think Taehyun would be the least into it. I think he can be submissive, but not entirely convinced he'd be willing to dress up or do pet-like things. Yes, he might be willing to try once for you, but I think it might stay as a one-time thing. Taehyun gives the vibe of being into petplay but the other way around (you’re his pet).

It’s been a while since I last sent something here and I’m so sorry about that!! I’m doing a lot better now (although I never got my test results back to see if I had that syndrome or not LOL) and I almost have the two new Fontaine regions 100% oopsies! But I have like serious brainrot (but school is so tiring I usually just nap the whole afternoon) anyways!! I listened to one of mitski’s songs called “Once More to See You” and ugh it honestly just reminded me of Dottore and fragile!reader. The beginning makes me think of how fragil!reader and Dottore (especially) having a reputation and being looked as “weird” or as students who don’t belong in the Akademiya. The rest of the song just reminds me of Dottore being alone once fragile!reader fell into their coma, and him longing to feel your hand against his. To have your warm touch, caress his cheek, kiss his lips, embrace him, and to say his name, “Zandik!” In that lovely tone of yours. ouuughh I love fragile!reader and Dottore so so much just Dottore having to wait so long for them to wake up. Like imagine having to wait hundreds of years for the only person who’s every shown you affection and love. The only person to hold you so lovingly, say your name with love and not disgust, or with horror.

And after waking up??? Oughhh I know I say this a bit frequently but Dottore would become so so protective and possessive. I mean, you’re the only thing he has left, and he almost lost you once. He won’t spare to almost lose you another time, especially after centuries went by without your warm touch, or your voice. He defff savors every moment you two have together when he’s available. And especially when he becomes so used to having you on his lap and him being able to feel your heartbeat. Sometimes he may unconsciously tighten his grip on you when he’s holding you.

Dottore was definitely ostracized and excluded in the Akademiya, everyone thought that he nor his crazy ideas belonged there. And you, I imagine your reputation start to get dragged through the mud the more you hang out with Dottore. They just don't understand. Why would you ever want to even sit in the same room as him, much less befriend him? You started to be labeled as the same things as him. You don't mind (most of the time, sometimes it still gets to you) because you think those people are just shallow compared to your friend. But Zandik himself doesn't understand you either? There's no way that his "friendship" (your words, not his) is worth the stress of all this. He doesn't understand, it's not like you're using him, if anything he's the one using you instead. Zandik doesn't understand... but he's not going to admit that the fact that you chose him over everyone else makes him feel a certain way. And that tingly feeling only grows and grows. And he refuses to acknowledge it... until you leave him and suddenly everything he's chosen to ignore hits him at once. Everything that Zandik's been trying so hard to deny, he admits to now. He misses you... he longs for your touch, your kindness, the way you treat him with such love, your voice... as horrible as this is, it really did open his eyes. Made him realize that living by himself again in the dorms is slowly making him even crazier without you. Made him realize that he's willing to do anything, and i mean anything, to get you back.

OH YEAH Dottore is extremely protective over you when you finally wake up. See, Dottore isn't really scared of someone else hurting you. He knows that he and his segments would never let that happen. Rather, he's scared of other things. Like your illness. Things he can't control. Dottore is a man who's used to being in control now, so when he can't predict things? When he can't see them coming? He doesn't like that. Not one bit, especially when it comes to you. He needs to know everything, otherwise, he won't be satisfied. He can't risk you being hurt again, not under his watch. You're very confused in the beginning because hello? This is the same guy who used to let you go out and do all these crazy tasks on his behalf? But yeah, he can't help but be very possessive. It's very Dottore like of him.

Who wantss to help me come up with a ship name for mudshock+geode because. I have many (sort of uncoordinated) DR mudshock+geo thoughts if yall want em. Spoilers ahead btw

Vivid scene in my mind that’s making me wish I could write: Nya reassuring Cole she is not upset that he has fallen for someone new since the merge. Bc he may have this fear that she and Jay will just think that this means he moved on or forgot about them or sth. But Nya makes sure he knows she trusts him and knows he still loves her n Jay.

And also her telling Cole that like… her only issue with Geo is that she doesn’t know him. But she can get to know him. And in fact she wants to, because she feels that if Cole can love someone and vouch for someone, then surely they’re good. And yeah. Geo is so so good..

You cannot tell me Cole didn’t talk abt his husband and wife nonstop to Geo n Bonzle n the finders in the land of lost things. bc they are his World. And of course the rest of the ninja+buddies. And it’s partially one of the things that has Geo falling for him because ohghhhh that’s a man who loves and protects so strongly so brightly so fiercely, this is someone so steady and nurturing.

I also just think Nya would like Geo. They would be buddies i think. Dr please let them interact I’m begging… they can share a spouse because I said so

Geo being a bit… intimidated? By Nya at first? If that makes sense? Like. He is secretly afraid she’s like jealous or sees him as in her way or fears he’s somehow keeping Cole from her. But then they hang out more and he’s like oh no wait she’s cool as fuck just blunt and not always great at articulating herself.

Bonding via sparring please (let Nya and Geo spar 2024) (let Cole and Nya spar they missed each other so fucking badddd it would be gay as hell)

And of course of course of course Nya and Cole wondering when their wife (Jay) will return from the war (being a missing person)

They’re both barely holding it together but I think Nya less so/worse because she’s had her brother taken from her and things are sorta compounding. Obviously Kai mattered to Cole as well but like dude Kai n Nya are like dipper and mabel levels of tight so it’s hitting her noticeably and. Cole is doing his best to comfort n ease her mind or distract, bc he likes to be people’s shoulder to lean on, but he’s falling apart at the seams himself. At which point I see Geo feeling rather helpless and like he can’t help them. He tries though.

But anyway. On a lighter note. Suit Jay when two buff hot people he’s never seen in his life scoop him up and take him home saying you’re all married and this is the way things are supposed to be: okay yessir yes ma’am 🫡 can’t complain. Nice arrangement 👁️👁️ fine by me 👁️👁️

Stormlight hc's!

This kinda blends with my general Sunshower hcs too (or maybe I'll just call both ship-versions Stormlight from now on for consistency), buuut either way it's Jay and Sunni:

Sunni first gains awareness of Jay at a science fair during her first year of high school (which would be Jay's second year). He won, but despite losing she was madly impressed.

Similar to Jesse with Cole, she was fine with adoring him from afar (until him coming to school without a scarf rocked her to the core so much that she had to make her existence known to him)

But because Jay's been so busy since, it's been hard for Sunni to intervene and talk to him again. Buuuuut maybe an opportunity is coming up soon.......

Sunni has six siblings, of which she is the middle child of the seven, as opposed to Jay being an only child. Jay loves the idea of a large family (and gets along well with all of Sunni's family) but Sunni always feels eclipsed (ha puns) at her house and likes the peace and attention she gets at Jay's parents house snksnksnk

Sunni initially doesn't wear her glasses around Jay, thinking they make her look less appealing—but oops she forgets to take them off during chemistry one day cuz she has to read something and Jay has a heart attack from how cute she looks

The Blue Ninja was always Sunni's favorite, because his eyes matched Jay's very pretty blue ones <3

...and after finding out that Jay is the Blue Ninja, she starts extra fussing over him over injuries she knows he must've gotten during battle (especially if shown on tv) and also tries to help him better monitor his energy usage (she is actually the one that fully cracks the equation for it)

Their relationship is so lowkey at first that the only reason anyone else catches onto it is because Sunni is suddenly wearing Jay's jacket at school one day. Both Kai and Cole have a heart attack over it. Nya does not care but she does

Jay always asks her about the weather as opposed to checking on the tv/internet because Sunni is always more accurate (and it helps him prepare in case he has to fly his jet that day)

The only thing Sunni can bake/cook on her own is cookies, and she loves making Jay gingersnaps. Jay never tells Zane, but, they are the best cookies he's ever had. Even better than Zane's muffins.

Their first "date" is at a boardwalk fair down at Ninjago City Docks. Jay finds out the hard way that Sunni is lactose intolerant (Sunni's super-embarassed about it but Jay's just guilty that he bought all that ice cream oh dear—)

Jay starts finding little yellow sticky notes tucked in the pockets/crevices of his gi when on missions, all full of positive reminders and little reinforcements <3

In turn, Sunni gets a bunch of pictures of glorious landscapes slipped into her locker, each of them with a breathtaking visage of the sky in various colors (or just some fascinating weather phenomena Jay may or may not have personally caused for a good photo op)

They only get to date for roughly about a year (aka the brief-ish timeframe in which Jaya is broken up), but it is a darn good year, and they enjoyed the time together too much to not stay as friends T-T)9

𑁍 after Harumi died in the collapsed building he took a few days off to process the whole thing

𑁍 Kai is a big brother to Lloyd so whenever he’s upset Kai’s always there to help

𑁍 same thing with Nya; she’s a big sister and the middle sibling of the RGB trio

𑁍 Lloyd respects everyone on the team for practically raising him and dealing with his evil phase

Kai:

ꕥ will ironically say “FIYAAAA!” But everyone is used to it so there’s no reaction

ꕥ literally an oven

ꕥ remember in s1 when he found Zane in the fridge? Yeah he never lets him live it down even though he chilled in the oven around that time

ꕥ blames himself for every little thing that goes wrong on a mission

ꕥ takes criticism hard

ꕥ grew to be less protective of Nya but he still worries about her time to time

ꕥ relies on his elemental abilities so when they’re taken away (s10) he feels utterly useless

ꕥ avoids water because 1: he’s terrified of it and 2: so he won’t ruin his hair

ꕥ Kai’s only afraid of bodies of water so anything more than Nya’s abilities is terrifying to him

Cole:

 he’s simply a bear

 a plus size god

 developed an eating disorder during the 1 year time skip as a way to punish himself

 never actually had a crush on Nya he was just confused and felt like he had to feel like he liked her

Like you’re standing together before an appearance you’re both scheduled to attend

And you naturally start fixing the collar of his suit because it doesn’t look Perfect and as an idol yourself you know that anything less than perfect is not an option

But having your hands touching him, even just his collar, is like a big deal to him

So he starts getting all awkward and stuttering over his words pls

His shy little smile is SO CUTE you can’t stand it

And even though he hates how shy you can make him when he’s trying to be so cool

Hueningkai

Kai is so polite and respectful of you being older than him

His manners are on point at all times and he doesn’t even get shy or awkward around you

It’s actually kind of interesting how he can both respect your age difference but also make it seem like there isn’t one at the same time

He’s just mature enough to strike the balance just perfectly I suppose

He doesn’t treat you any differently than he treats anyone else, other than doing as you say and being extra nice to you

But Kai is always nice so like can you even tell probably not

He doesn’t flirt because that feels Inappropriate

So the only way you end up finding out he has a crush on you is because you ask him to help you with something for a performance

And this help requires you to spend a lot of one on one time together

Poor Kai’s internally freaking out like… ALONE??? WITH YOU???

So he has to confess but he does it like it’s nothing

NATLA Episode 6 - Masks (4/5)

An explanation of what I'm doing here and my history with ATLA.

Of course, full spoilers ahead.

Daammmnnn these transitions for Zuko in this episode!!!! Right into the Agni Kai.

It's such an interesting choice to have Ozai seem genuinely insulted that Zuko said the general's plan was terrible - like it really was Ozai's plan Zuko had said was bad. He's terrifying in his rage, but it feels more personal in the live-action rather than the cold and distant - almost disinterested anger of the animated series. Animated Ozai always felt more dismissive and annoyed with Zuko, live-action Ozai seems like he truly wants Zuko to be his perfect prince and is angry that he's not.

He hasn't written Zuko off yet - and I think that makes a much more interesting dynamic to watch than one where everyone can tell Zuko will never win his favor. It will make Zuko turning in Ba Sing Se make a lot more sense because we, too, might believe that Ozai might actually welcome him back. In the animated show, it was painfully obvious that Ozai couldn't care less about Zuko and his treatment of him upon his return was ceremonial at best. But here, watching him berate Zuko about his insult in the war council, it feels like Ozai really cares - not in the healthy, good manner of caring, but he's not so distant. He's a very real, present, and active threat.

I like that in this iteration, Iroh tries to intervene on Zuko's behalf. I don't see it as lore-breaking at all (I've seen people say that Zuko was punished for speaking out at a war council, surely Iroh would be punished even more severely for directly opposing the fire lord's actions in front of witnesses) I think Iroh still has a lot of respect in the fire nation and enough status to be able to at least recommend the fire lord change his decision. Ozai allows this because he's not trying to teach Iroh anything, he has a ceremonial position in the nation, but no real power as shown when he immediately steps down when Ozai says he won't change his mind about the Agni Kai. It's still his brother, the Dragon of the West, after all, so I don't think even the onlookers would see it as an underling questioning the ruler - it was a conversation between two brothers, both of which have storied histories for the fire nation.

It's chilling to hear Ozai respond to Iroh's insistence that 'he's still your son' with 'we'll see'. It's what he wants to see here, he wants to see how ruthless and 'strong' Zuko will be when pushed to it as that's what Ozai has been taught makes a 'good' leader. Zuko tries to beg forgiveness, but Ozai orders him to rise and 'learn respect'.

While in the animated series, Zuko doesn't fight back at all and kneels unmoving as his father brands him, I don't think it messes with his character to have him fight back in the live-action. He's not fighting back because he's angry at his dad or is trying to show he's better than his dad - he's fighting because he thinks it'll be what makes his father respect him and think that he's a worthy son. He's terrified and doesn't want to fight, but he thinks obeying his father - showing what he can do - will earn him his father's love.

But he doesn't throw the first punch - Ozai does. Zuko merely stands and faces his father and dodges the fire lord's attacks and does his sick parting of the fire blast. He evades and dodges until he runs out of space and finally tries to demonstrate what he can do. Ozai's nonchalant, relaxed pose as Zuko comes at him with his own attacks shows just how much more skilled Ozai is than his son - this is truly an uneven match - a master against a child.

Ozai dodges Zuko's blows with his hands behind his back, then with only one hand, and easily grapples him and pushes his son back - snarling at him "is this everything? Give me everything!" He has no idea how harmful this 'lesson' is to his son, he doesn't see the trauma he's inflicting - his own childhood has led him to believe that this is actually an accurate test of Zuko's ability. And so Zuko tries to give his father what he wants - his attacks become bigger, more powerful, more ferocious, but Ozai still blocks him, dodges, and lands easy blows on his son.

Then he leaves Zuko an opening. He makes a big swing for Zuko to duck and pauses so Zuko can take advantage of the drop in his guard. He still has plenty of time to block Zuko's attack, even from the position he's in, but he sees his child commit the cardinal sin - he shows compassion. He hesitates to cause pain. And now Ozai is done with the lesson - his child failed. Zuko couldn't bring himself to truly hurt his father - his compassion won out over the brutality Ozai wanted to see from him. And so he's punished. His father holds him down, tells him compassion is a sign of weakness, then brands his son as a lesson he won't ever forget.

Iroh looks away in horror, Azula looks on with fascination, Zuko screams, and there's actually a look of conflicted pain on Ozai's face as well.

Jumping to the flashback Zuko has in season 2, Zuko Alone, of the animated show: I had never noticed the parallels between the way Ozai punishes Zuko for speaking out and how Azulon attempts to punish Ozai for the same thing. Both sons questioned their father's plans for the future and both were punished for it. Ozai's comes much later in life, after he's been fully indoctrinated into the Fire Nation's propaganda that power and force are the most valuable traits one can have and arguing that Iroh isn't fit for the throne because of his 'weakness' after his son's death reinforces this. It also directly impacts the way Ozai treats Zuko when he speaks out at the war council in defense of the soldiers' lives. Ozai's punishment was to know the loss of a child - while he didn't seem to believe that it would affect him as it did Iroh, I think his over-punishment of Zuko was a hold-over from that trauma his father inflicted on him - a similar trauma response Zuko has in the series: he over compensates for the perceived weakness others saw in him.

By brutally punishing Zuko for speaking out against him (just as he would have been punished for speaking out against his own father), Ozai was trying to prove to himself that he wasn't 'weak' like Iroh and the pain of his children wouldn't affect him. Not only that, but he wanted to forge his children into the ideal that he thought he, himself, had achieved: one where they were 'strong' and could stand alone without breaking under the pressures of war (like Iroh did at the loss of his son) or harm done to a family member (Zuko held back and wouldn't hurt his father).

While all of that is subtly in the animated show, you have to really understand the way childhood trauma affects people into adulthood and the cycle of violence that's perpetrated: very rarely are abusive parents that way randomly - it usually stems from how they, themselves, were treated as children. I do like that we got to see more nuance in Ozai's character here rather than the flat maniacal villain shown in the animated series - we DO see conflict on Ozai's face as he burns Zuko, possibly a hint of tears in his eyes. It doesn’t lessen the horror of his actions, it doesn’t make him 'sympathetic', it makes him a real person that we can identify in the real world. It also makes people grapple with the idea that 'bad guys' are rarely the comic-book villains with no hope for redemption that's popular in some genres of media. Not that that's a bad way to show villains, usually those stories (Lord of the Rings comes to mind), other themes are explored rather than the complexity of what leads people to do horrible things, but showing that nuance is also not a bad thing. They're just two different ways to approach antagonists.

A huge part of learning about oppression (racism, patriarchy, homophobia, colonization) is that all those things HARM THE OPPRESSOR TOO. Does that mean that the only reason we should stop racism is because it harms white people? No. What it DOES mean is that understanding that everyone is connected and even when you're 'on top' in the social/economic/political order, you are still harmed by that system too. Understanding that is a very big way we can STOP those systems - by not just throwing out an entire group of people because they happen to be born into the social group that’s oppressing people, but rather understand what's happened to their minds as well so that we can teach them a better way and keep it from repeating with just another group. I know large sections of Tumblr hate that idea - that by humanizing those causing harm we can reduce harm - it's much more satisfying to just say 'that person was born into x group and has upheld x group's supremacy, therefore they're evil and should never be shown a scrap of kindness or understanding'. This isn't a whole ass 'how-to de-radicalize people' post, so obviously I'm not going to go into all the nuances of how to go about doing that or WHO should be taking up the burden of doing that (genuinely, the answer to that question is whoever feels called to do it whether that be allies from that group or those of the oppressed group who are able and willing to 'reach across the aisle', it's 100% up to the individual and I am NOT here to tell you how you need to react to oppressors), this is just a 'lets try to cover some bases in case people take my statements about Ozai and generational abuse wildly out of context'.

We understand in the animated series that Zuko is a product of his childhood and the culture he was raised in - so why does that understanding never seem to extend to anyone else in the Fire Nation? My assumption would be that, as a kid's show, it was easier to digest that there would be one 'had always been good' kid in the Fire Nation while everyone else was just 'born a monster' from the start. Again, like with the Lord of the Rings, that's an acceptable way to portray villains when the themes you're looking to explore aren't central to that nuance, but I really like how the live-action decided to explore what it was like for the Fire Nation royal family in more complex ways. Azula wasn't grinning at Zuko's punishment like a psycho, she was looking on in morbid fascination, learning the lesson just as well as Zuko and perhaps seeing herself taking the place as the favored child for good. A much more interesting dynamic to me than her 'foregone conclusion' of being Ozai's favorite like in the animated series.

I think post DOTD Cole still deserves to be at least a tiny bit affected by his time as a ghost yk

Explanations!!

Ngl the fact that Cole literally defied life and death and we never talk about it makes me sad like cmon it’s so interesting we give Lloyd Oni dragon features and Nya water features but we NEVER talk about when Cole literally transcended the barrier of ACTUAL DEATH. He should get more than a scar that vanishes afterwards and some cool powers SO IM GIVING HIM IT because this fandom has a criminal lack of ghost Cole content

So yeah here’s my explanations for each thingy plus my headcanons slash fanon

You can find the exact lines and contents in the ID if you can’t read my messy handwriting or tell what my messy sketches are supposed to be dndfjhgfdhgi know I know it’s very bad anyways

first one is self explanatory, Kai’s worried about Cole because the guy was dead and came back to life, Cole denies it (no it’s not ship but idm if ur a lavashipper and want it to be ship you can tag it if you wanna) because he’s Cole ofc he’s gonna deny it he’s an idiot. Meanwhile we go on to list alll the ways it’s most definitely 100% affecting him.

first one. the Cole vision. BASICALLY I follow the theory ghosts have different eyes, and when designing those eye, I take inspiration from lizard eyes. A lot of lizards, particularly nocturnal ones, not only have good night vision but can also see many more colors than humans, so I applied that to ghost eyes as well, essentially sight is one of their few senses that aren’t muted. They have night vision and can also see a much broader spectrum of color than humans can.

Since Cole has his scar on the left side, he also gets a ghost eye on the left side, which still has all the advantages he did as a ghost. On the other hand, his right eye is back to usual, meaning it doesn’t get those advantages and he’s still red/green colorblind in it. That means his left and right vision is pretty different now, which takes quite a lot of getting used to. Obviously this would be easier to show with a colored thing but it was. Hard to color for obvious reasons (you can’t demonstrate someone being able to see more colors than humans because we will always interpret it as a color we can see due to how we filter it) the ghost eye stays his entire life and there’s not really anything he can do about it.

Onto the arm - the markings are essentially burn marks / scars from his lava arms, and his nails are claws. I see ghosts as getting less and less human as time goes on because they forget who they were and what they looked like, therefore being incapable of mimicking a human form. Because Cole was around the ninja he never got far, but he did end up with some intrinsic ghost traits that carried over, like the claws. He has tried cutting them but it basically requires a massive claw clipper and even then they grow back very quickly and you can still see that they’re claws, they’re just less obnoxiously sharp. He usually opts to hide them with gloves a lot of the time. The claws are also permanent, but he can regularly trim them to be less obvious and also less annoying and more manageable.

The one where he’s scared of water is. Self explanatory. Obviously he has a big fear of water after coming back from the dead. Even just a few drops can send him into a panic attack. It gets better eventually with exposure therapy, though it may still cause him to be anxious around it at times.

most people have already done the “Cole runs into doors and walls after coming back from being a ghost lol” but like. It makes sense. So.

Right. Onto the ANGSTTTT.

“Everything is too much” refers to his sensory issues. Now obviously Cole is autistic /lh so he’s always had some sensory issues, but oh boy. Getting the ability to feel literally everything instantly after so long of not having it whatsoever?? Yikes. Pretty much everything is obnoxiously and incredibly overwhelming to him. it goes back to the usual after a lot of help from his family, though! :)

“But also”. Aka the image of him looking out at the stars. Lot more vague. Interpret it as you wish. There’s a few intended meanings to it but go ahead and figure them out for yourself. I will say that going with the idea that it’s dissociation related, he has a tendency to dissociate a lot after coming back (which is strange since he used to be pretty grounded). It never really goes away.

”Too little” ok so this one DEFINITELY needs explanation. I talked about how he’s overwhelmed. Well. Sometimes he’ll have bouts where it’s the exact opposite. He’ll suddenly feel a cold chill followed by a spreading numbness. Sometimes it’s just his hand, or his arm, other times it’s his entire body. It’s basically a psychological thing, sort of like phantom limbs except instead of a feeling where there is an absence, it’s more of an absence where there should be a feeling. Of course it’s absolutely terrifying for him, but the others eventually learn how to help ground him when it happens. Over time It gets less frequent but it doesn’t go away.

Anyways yeah that’s all I just. Think there should not only be more ghost Cole content but also. More post ghost Cole. He’s gotta be impacted SOMEHOW. Right.
