Side Dishes in Korea
Why do we get served so many each meal?
1. Background Information
Tumblr media
One of the most appealing things about eating out in Korea is the unlimited free refill on the side dishes, known as banchan.
This practice is deeply rooted in Korean history and character as a nation
2. Kimchi
Tumblr media
There are hundreds of different types of kimchi, but the signature cabbage banchan is offered at pretty much every restaurant.
Koreans have for generations been storing vegetables in pots to ferment so that they will have food available for the winter.
3. Common Banchans
Tumblr media
Other than kimchi, there are bean sprouts, cucumber vegetables, and sesame leaves pickled in soy sauce.
Some of the more luxurious Korean restaurant sever egg rolls, tteokbooki, and ganjang gejang.
4. Banchans At Restaurant
Tumblr media
Eating at a Korean restaurant is always an exercise in how to maneuver all the dishes to actually fit on the table.
It is not uncommon to receive 3 or more different banchan dishes alongside the main course that you order.
5. Homemade Banchans
Tumblr media
During a kimchi-preparation event called kimjang, a large amout of kimchi is laid out for all members of the family work on.
This practice is less common these days, but parents still like to prepare kimchi and distribute it to their children as a show of affection.
6. Why Are Banchan Unlimited?
Tumblr media
One reason is that white rice was much more expensive than kimchi and banchan during difficult times in the Korean economy.
It was too expensive for restaurants to give refills of rice, but in order to make sure you were full, they offered you a second helping of banchan.
7. How Is Banchan Served?
Tumblr media
In order to reduce operating costs, some restaurants have suggested limiting or removing the unlimited banchan options, which many Korean people weren’t happy about.
To meet in the middle, many Korean restaurants these days have adopted a self-service system in which you can eat as much as you like, but you have to approach the food station and fill your own bowls.

What is the difference between -게 하다 and -게 되다?
Great question! First, we need to understand that 하다 is active whereas 되다 is passive! Your next question might be, “but omg, SK101, I’m not good at English grammar, too; what the hell is passive and active?”
Another great question!
The active voice is when the speaker/subject performs the action or is described directly–they did it, caused it, performed it; you’re gonna see people commonly use these ways to explain the active voice. In English, the active voice can look something like this:
I studied Korean; (저는) 한국어를 공부했어요
As you can see, I (the subject) am the one that studied Korean of my own volition. I caused the “Korean studying.”
The passive voice is when the speaker/subject does not perform/cause/do the action. Instead, the subject is affected by the action/performance. I understand this may be difficult to understand, so I’ll spend more time on this.
When can you use the passive voice?
When we have more interest in the object that experiences the action
When we don’t know (or don’t want to express) who performed the action (this is an academic loophole when we didn't do the proper research to support a claim)
When we want to emphasize the action!
The passive voice is not grammatically incorrect (take it from a linguist and someone who minored in creative writing). You will hear people say that the passive voice is not good or is ungrammatical (some bs like that). Even in Korean, the passive voice is entirely natural and used in everyday contexts.
The passive voice in Korean may look like this:
한국어가 (저에게) 공부됐어요; Korean was studied (by me)
The prepositional phrase “by me; 저에게” shows that we know who studied Korean. This may still be confusing, so let me give you another example:
부엌을 청소했어요; I cleaned the kitchen.
The kitchen has been cleaned.
Let’s add more context to the sentence to understand the situation better.
When I got home, I cleaned the kitchen (meaning, I saw the dirty kitchen and cleaned it)
When I got home, the kitchen was cleaned (meaning, someone (unknown or otherwise) cleaned the kitchen when I was out)
*gasp!* Yes, by now, you've noticed that 이/가 goes with passive!
Now, onto your question: what's the difference between -게 하다 and -게 되다?
-게 하다: causative
The causative aspect shows that A causes B to happen. Pretend you have a younger sibling–here are some examples:
동생은 저를 늦게 했어요; My sibling made me late
I made them understand the problem
You (the sibling) bothered me!
I made my sibling pretty with makeup
A (동생/저) causes B to happen. B does not mean the recipient (저/동생) of the action – B represents the action.
-게 되다; to become (passive)
This grammar point shows that B changes A! Let’s use the examples from above.
동생이 화장품으로 예쁘게 됐어요; my sibling became pretty with makeup
동생 때문에 제가 귀찮게 되었어요; my sibling has been bothering me
문제가 동생에게 이해하게 되었어요; my sibling came to understand the problem [more literally; the problem was understood by my sibling]
I became late because of my sibling
Now, I'm sure you've noticed that there are two spellings of a conjugated '되다'. The only difference between '되었어요' and '됐어요' is that '됐어요' is a contraction of '되었어요'. You may have other Korean learners attempt to tell you that you write one [되었어요] and speak the other [됐어요]. This isn't not true; it's just not a rule written in stone. You are very much able to write the contracted '됐어요' instead of the regular '되었어요'. In fact, native Korean speakers do this all the time. It would be like saying we shouldn't write any English contractions because it's not grammatically correct--it's just wrong. The rules of '되다' are more complex than just written and spoken, but that's a blog for another day.
I hope this helped answer your question! If you're still confused, don't hesitate to send me another ask or pm me! I'm always open to clearing up any confusion or directing you to a source that may help!
Happy Learning :)

Let's check out some best Korean traditional food
Kimchi: The Heart and Soul of Korean Cuisine
It would be impossible to discuss Korean cuisine without discussing kimchi. This traditional Korean food has a history extending back more than 2,000 years to the Shilla Dynasty. People usually use cabbage or radishes for kimchi. All the ingredients are usually seasoned with salt, chili pepper flakes, garlic, ginger, and other herbs and spices. The end result is a dish that Koreans adore with every meal because it is sour, hot, and pungent. Due to its probiotic nature, kimchi is not only delicious but also has several health advantages.
Korean Fried Chicken: The Crispy Delight of Traditional Korean Food
Korean fried chicken recreates the classic American fast food in its own special way. Unlike its American equivalents, double-fry the chicken in vegetable oil before covering it in a sweet-spicy sauce. As a result, the inside of the meat is extremely moist. And the lightly battered skin is crispy and low in fat. Korean Fried Chicken is a famous late-night treat with beer.
Tteokbokki- Red Rice Cakes
Tteokbokki is a beloved traditional Korean food that has become a popular street food dish across the country. It features chewy rice cakes, known as tteok, cooked in a spicy sauce, creating a flavorful and satisfying meal. Tteokbokki is known for its unique combination of heat, sweetness, and umami flavors.

Kimchi Jeon (Savory Kimchi Pancakes)
Yields: 4 servings Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 10-15 minutes
Ingredients:
1 cup well-fermented kimchi, roughly chopped
1/4 cup kimchi juice
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup potato or corn starch
1/2 cup cold water
1 large egg, lightly beaten
3-4 scallions, thinly sliced
1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil or neutral-flavored cooking oil
Optional additions:
1 tablespoon gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes) for extra spice
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
Other vegetables: thin strips of carrot, onion slices
Dipping sauce ingredients:
Soy sauce
Rice vinegar
A pinch of sugar
Toasted sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions:
Make the batter: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, potato/corn starch, kimchi, kimchi juice, egg, water, and scallions. (Include any optional ingredients you'd like). Mix until a slightly thick batter forms.
Heat the pan: Heat a large skillet or nonstick pan over medium heat. Add a thin layer of oil to the pan.
Cook the pancakes: Pour about 1/2 cup of batter into the hot pan, spreading it into a thin, even circle. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
Repeat: Repeat the cooking process with the remaining batter, adding more oil as needed.
Make the dipping sauce: In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar. Add sesame seeds if desired.
Serve: Slice the pancakes into wedges and serve immediately with the dipping sauce.
Tips:
Well-fermented kimchi: Using older, well-fermented kimchi provides the best flavor and acidity.
Consistency check: The batter should be the consistency of a slightly thick pancake batter. If it's too thick, add a tablespoon or two of water. If it's too thin, add a bit more flour.
Don't overcrowd the pan: Cook one or two pancakes at a time to achieve the best crispiness and an even cook.
Experiment: Feel free to add seafood, thinly sliced pork, or other vegetables to your pancakes.

Besides the chapter quiz, which should really only take 십오 minutes or less, I’m literally taking the day off of work and studying to run errands and clean. I’m sort of excited, mostly to decorate my space. It’s pretty small, but I’ll make it my own. Midterms are this week along with normal course work, so here we go!

life lately // enjoying myself so hard it's getting dangerous 🤭
in this issue 🔍: brain-rot target language input 🇯🇵🇨🇳🇰🇷 & if icarus was a workaholic 👩‍💻✍️🍝
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"language learning" but it's just brain-rot 🧠
🇯🇵 Shogun (9/10) — objectively a really good show, but a lot of death and triggering topics for me personally 🥺
🇯🇵 Spy x Family (5/10) — i can only watch one episode at a time now because the plot is getting increasingly ridiculous, please don't be mad at me if you're a fan 😅
🇨🇳 When I Fly Towards You (6/10) — it's silly, but it's also just what you expect from kids of the characters' ages and at times it does tickle that part of my brain that likes candy (i still like Exclusive Fairytale better though, 对不起 张陆让)
(10/10) — my new favorite album!! ☺️ even @pianistbynight likes this one and she usually prefers classical music!
🇰🇷 Seventeen on Shuffle (10/10) — my usual suspects never miss 😌
too close to the sun but finally looking in the mirror ☀️🪞
i gave myself a headache from working too much in poor physical conditions again 😭 i didn't notice until the end of the day because i was on a roll at work and it's rare when that happens, so in a messed up way, i feel it was worth it?? i bought a new chair and rearranged my desk setup a little to be more ergonomic, but that only does so much when i have one good night of sleep a week 🙃
my poor sleep is low-key my own fault though since i write and binge cinema therapy videos late into the night because i love doing those things so much that my brain won't shut up until i do them 😛
in other news, i made my favorite pasta recipe!! 😋 but i burned myself and didn't notice until i started washing the dishes in hot water ♨️ wow, me enjoying myself so much i don't notice i'm hurting myself is a real theme here... 🙈 something to work out in detail in my diary some time 🤔
💌: how's life been treating you lately? 💐
Tumblr media
bonus: @pianistbynight tagged me in this fun picrew game (how you look now vs when you were younger) and it made me miss my good eyesight 🥲 everyone, take good care of your eyes by taking lots of outdoor breaks (with UV protection!!) 👀
