How many TLG Outlander incorrect quotes have I done? Here’s more anyway
Sumu: I know over 200 ways to kill a man
Kuumwa: You could glue an open jar of rats to his face and then blowtorch the other half of the jar so the rats have to eat their way out through his face :)
Sumu: …..201
Alternatively
Kenge: I know over 200 ways to kill a man
Sumu: You could glue an open jar of rats to his face and then blowtorch the other half of the jar so the rats have to eat their way out through his face
Kenge: …..201
Cheezi: On the count of three, what's your favorite cake? One, two, three-
Cheezi and Chungu, in unison: Chocolate cake peanut butter frosting with chocolate chunks!
Goigoi: Our turn, Sumu! One, two, three- vanilla!
Sumu, deadpan: I've never had cake, what is cake.
Mzingo: Looking left cause you don’t treat me right
Janja: Looking right because you left
Reirei: Looking up cause you let me down
Kiburi: Looking down cause you fucked up
Jasiri: What is wrong with you guys
Janja: Hah! 69! You know what that means?
Cheezi: What?
Mzingo: That you're a child.
Chungu: HOW'D YOU GUESS MY IQ!?
Sumu: Can I be frank with you guys?
Goigoi: Sure, but I don’t see how changing your name is gonna help.
Chungu: Can I still be Chungu?
Tamka: Shh, let Frank speak.
Kenge: Why are Shupavu and Njano sitting with their backs to each other?
Sumu: They had a fight.
Kenge: Then why are they holding claws?
Sumu: They get sad when they fight.
Janja: How did none of you hear what I just said?
Chungu: I’ve been zoned out for the past two and a half hours.
Cheezi: I got distracted about halfway through.
Nne, as Tano nods: Ignoring you was a conscious decision.
(Royal Mjuzi au)
Kiburi: Are we really going to let Nduli keep Mwamba?
Neema: We kept Tamka.
Jasiri: Imagine if someone handed you a box full of all the items you have lost throughout your life
Mzingo: Self-esteem, haven't seen you in years!
Kiburi: Oh wow, my childhood innocence! Thank you for finding this!
Janja: I knew I lost that potential somewhere!
Reirei: My moral code, is that you?
Jasiri:
Jasiri: I was just gonna show you this cool trunk my mother left me but do you guys need a hug?
Tamka: I’ve done a lot of dumb stuff.
Wakali: I witnessed the dumb stuff.
Neema: I recorded the dumb stuff.
Nduli: I joined in on the dumb stuff.
Kiburi: I TRIED TO STOP YOU FROM DOING THE DUMB STUFF!!!
Janja: Here’s a fun Christmas idea. We hang mistletoe, but instead of kissing, you have to FIGHT whoever else is under it.
Reirei: Janja no.
Kiburi: Mistlefoe.
Reirei: Please stop encouraging him.
Ucheshi: If you had to choose between Makuu and all the money I have in my wallet, which would you choose?
Kiburi: That depends, how much money are we taking about?
Makuu: Kiburi!
Ucheshi: 63 cents.
Kiburi: I'll take the money.
Makuu: KIBURI!!!
Kiburi: I trust Janja.
Reirei: You think he knows what he’s doing?
Kiburi: I wouldn't go that far.
Janja: Don't worry, I got a plan.
Reirei: Alright.
Janja: TraitorSayWhat?
Kiburi: Excuse me?
Janja: What?
Reirei:
Janja:
Janja: No wait-
Goigoi: Reirei, what do IDK, LY, and TTYL mean?
Reirei: I don’t know, love you, talk to you later
Goigoi: Ok, I love you too, I’ll just ask one of the kids.
Chungu: What if mayonnaise came in cans?
Cheezi: That would suck cuz you can’t microwave metal
Janja: Good morning to everyone except these two furbrains
Ucheshi: The real treasure was the memories we made along the way.
Makuu: I almost died.
Kiburi: That... was my favorite memory.
Reirei: I dare you to kiss the next person who walks into this room.
Janja: Screw that, I’m not kissing any of you.
*Jasiri walks in*
Janja: Fine, I’ll do it. Rules are rules you know.
Janja: I am so cool. I am an absolute Chad. I am the epitome of coolness and awesomeness—
Jasiri: Hi.
Janja: *melts down in a flustered heap of softness*
Kiburi: I'm not doing too well.
Pua: What's wrong?
Kiburi: I have this headache that comes and goes.
*Makuu enters the room*
Kiburi: There it is again.
*Kenge and Sumu are planning to break in somewhere*
Sumu: We need to distract the guards.
Kenge: Right.
Sumu: What are we gonna do?
Kenge: I'm going to break their elbows while you poke their eyes.
Sumu:
Kenge:
Sumu: Deal.
Human/Zootopia-esque au: trying to use the family/Kiburi’s computer
Dogo: “Password clue: Favorite child”? Oooh, ah, ouch…sorry, sis. This is awkward *types in their name, but gets denied* What?!
Kijana: Really??? *starts dramatically crying tears of joy* This moment is so much bigger than me! I would like to thank my parents and my manager— *gets denied*
OR
Tamka: “Password clue: Best friend”? Oooh, ah, ouch…sorry, man. This is awkward *types in their name, but gets denied* What?!
Nduli: Really??? *starts dramatically crying tears of joy* This moment is so much bigger than me! I would like to thank my parents and my manager— *gets denied* Aw :(
The Outlanders trying to draw Jasiri:
Janja: I think I made one eye bigger than the other
Mzingo: I was going for a feeling
Reirei, with a perfect drawing: Honestly, I can’t even draw a circle
Kiburi: *shows his picture*
Janja: Okay Kiburi, you just drew yourself
Kiburi: I like me
Jasiri: Dammit, Janja!
Janja: What?! It wasn't me!
Jasiri: Sorry, force of habit.
Dammit, Mzingo!
Mzingo: Not me either.
Jasiri: Oh... Then who set the Outlands on fire?
Njano: *whistles*
Janja: We need to get through this locked door. Reirei, give me your credit card.
Reirei: Here.
Janja, pocketing it: Thanks. Kiburi, kick down the door.
*The group is getting into the car*
Janja: I’m driving.
Cheezi, out of view: Shotgun!
Chungu, turning to face Cheezi: Aww! But you had it on the way here-
Everyone except Cheezi: WOAH-
Cheezi, holding a shotgun: No! I found a shotgun! And I want the front seat! *Pumps gun*
Fuli: What do you think Bunga will do for a distraction?
Kion: He’ll probably make a noise or throw a rock. That's what I would do.
*Explosions and several car alarms go off*
Kion:....Or he could do that.
Goigoi: And now it’s time for... WHAT’S. IN. TAMKA’S MOUTH?
Never try this game. Ever
Tamka: Agahhhagg
Nduli: oh oh oh! It’s those napkins from that one chicken wing place!
Tamka: Uh uh
Chungu: Oh! It’s the entire country of China!
Tamka: *spits the thing out* No! It’s a piece of dental cotton!
Cheezi: From five weeks ago?
Tamka: Uh huh!
Cheezi: And now it’s time for Janja’s poetry beat
Janja: Eh, I don’t wanna
Chungu: But it’s your thing!
Janja: No, it’s not!
Cheezi: Yeah, it is. That’s why it’s called “Janja’s”, emphasis on “Janja’s” poetry beat!
Janja: Why don’t one of you do it this time?
Chungu: You don’t like my poetry!
Janja: Sure, I do! Come on
Chungu: Okay.
I sat down on the ground today
Baobab ball I was to play
But instead of rolling north or south
How’d it end up in my mouth?
Janja: You’re right. That sucked
Chungu: Will Shakespeare my butt
Kiburi: (on one line) Hello?
Tamka (on the other line): Hey, what’s up?
Kiburi: I need a little help, can you come over?
Tamka: I can’t. I’m buying clothes
Kiburi: Alright, well hurry up and come over here
Tamka: I can’t find ‘em...
Kiburi: What do you mean you can’t find them?
Tamka: I can’t find them, there’s only soup
Kiburi: ...What do you mean “There’s only soup”
Tamka: It means there’s only soup
Kiburi:Well, then get out of the soup isle!
Tamka: Okay! You don’t have to shout at me! (walks into another isle) There’s more soup
Kiburi: What do you mean there’s more soup?!
Tamka: It means there’s just more soup
Kiburi: Go into the next isle
Tamka: (goes into the next isle) There’s still soup!
Kiburi: WHERE ARE YOU RIGHT NOW?!
Tamka: I’M AT SOUP!
Kiburi: WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’RE “AT SOUP”?!?!
Tamka: I MEAN I’M AT SOUP!
Kiburi: WHAT STORE ARE YOU IN?!
Tamka: I’M AT THE SOUP STORE!!
Kiburi: WHY ARE YOU BUYING CLOTHES AT THE SOUP STORE?!?!?!
Tamka: FUCK YOU!!!!!
Kenge: I’m not worried about silly things like labels. Animals can call me whatever they want. They could even call me little…..
Kenge: NEVER CALL ME LITTLE!!!!!
(Nduli leans in towards a sleeping Tamka)
Nduli: Tamka..Tamka...Tam-zebra.
Tamka: (wakes up) Gimme the leg! I want the leg!
Makuu and Ucheshi: (staring into each other’s eyes)
Kiburi: (rips the leg off of a kill)
Makuu: We’re having a moment
Kiburi: I’m having a snack
Goigoi: The good news is I named my nickel “Phillip!”
Janja: What’s the bad news?
Goigoi: It’s a girl nickel! :D
Janja: YOU BET ME FOR A NICKEL?!
Cheezi: But it was a shiny nickel!
(Hodari saves Njano’s life)
Njano: Bro... 🥺
Hodari: Bro... 🥺
Kenge: Can you guys stop making out and go get the chimps?!
Neema: [Could I give Tamka a -2?]
Tamka: For what?
Neema: [Just for being you]
Jasiri: You assaulted a 94-year old animal!
Kenge: He sassed me
Mzingo: Ooh, you have some pie! Would you mind if I have a piece?
Janja: Uh, sure. (gives Mzingo a piece of pie)
Mzingo: Can you pass the cool hwhip?
Janja: What’d you say?
Mzingo: You can’t have a pie without cool hwhip!
J Cool hwhip?
M: Cool hwhip, yeah
J: You mean cool whip
M: Yeah, cool hwhip
J: Cool whip
M: Cool hwhip
J: Cool WHip
M: Cool hwhip
J: You’re saying it weird! Why’re you putting so much emphasis on the h?
M: What are you talking about? I’m just saying cool hwhip! You put cool hwhip on pie. Pie tastes better with cool hwhip
J: Say “whip”
M: Whip
J: Now say “cool whip”
M: Cool hwhip
J: Cool WHIP
M: Cool hwhip
J: COOL WHIP
M: Cool hwhip
Janja: YOU’RE EATING FUR!
Actor AU: Deleted scene with Scar and Jasiri
Director: Action!
Scar: Are you saying I’m stupid?
Jasiri: No…
Scar: Do I look. Stupid. To you?
Jasiri: *starts laughing* I’m sorry 😂😂

Scar: Are you saying I’m stupid?
Jasiri: *starts wheezing* I’m sorry! *recomposes herself* I got it. No no, just do it again. I’m fine

The years go by. The retail jobs that Steve thinks are temporary keep piling up, but he has no idea what else to do with his life so he just keeps on keeping on.
Until a large tree falls on the lawn of the little house he managed to buy and he gets the quote on removal and the number literally hurts his soul.
He buys a small chainsaw instead. Over the course of a few weeks, he gets most of the branches cut up. He collects some large rocks from down by the quarry and digs out a fire pit in his backyard. On his days off, his friends come over and they sit out back and have a few beers. The pile of wood dwindles. The giant trunk is another story though. His chainsaw isn't big enough for it. Burning it would take forever, and Steve's terrified he'd disappoint Smoky the Bear. He's at a loss.
Until he sees another giant trunk in someone's yard carved into a bear.
He knows what to do then. Not a bear, but something else. Through trial and error, the trunk becomes the rough shape of a woman, the remnants of the branches like a crown on her head. It's not as amazing as the bear he saw, but it's his. He finds he loves the smell of sawdust and the feeling of creating something.
Just like that, Steve realizes what he wants to do. It takes several months and a lot of yard sales, but he scrounges up the tools he needs to start woodworking. He learns to measure twice and cut once. He makes tables and chairs and carves them with art and designs that get better and better the more he learns. Shockingly, people actually buy his pieces.
Even more shocking comes the realization that he's making enough money to do it full time. He puts in his two weeks notice at Melvald's and hands in his assistant manager badge.
He's not sure he's happy, but he is content. It feels good to work hard and actually have things to show for it. It also feels good to work muscles he hasn't used since high school. He carries on for a few years like that, creating and learning and creating some more. Then Eddie Munson blows back into town. Invited back so Hawkins can have their most famous alumnus sing the national anthem at homecoming. Steve's honestly surprised he shows at all. "Can't believe you didn't tell them kiss your hairy ass," Steve says. Because of course Eddie ends up around his fire pit, sipping on Steve's cheap beer like he doesn't have three Grammy awards on his mantel. The years fall away with each drink, reminding Steve of just how much it had hurt when Eddie left. He'd wanted Eddie so bad back then, more than he'd ever wanted anyone. He can feel the echoes of that deep ache across time.
"Pfft. Don't you know all famous people wax our asses now? All the rage in LA." Eddie cuts a look at him and smirks when Steve rolls his eyes, grateful for the lighthearted moment to snap him out of his maudlin nostalgia. "Really though I thought about it, but then I thought it would be way funnier to donate a metric fuckton of money to Hawkins High with the stipulation that it go to the theater and band programs. Kind of bummed they couldn't honor my other request though."
"Which was?"
"My old Hellfire throne. I miss her, but apparently she's not around anymore. Something about water damage."
"Oh yeah. Water main busted a few years back and flooded the theater. I remember that." "Yeah. Had to settle for the promise they'd make a game lounge and stock it with all the supplies a budding young nerd needs."
"That's really nice, Eds."
Eddie shrugs. "I've been known to be nice on occasion. You'll come to homecoming, right? Moral support?"
Steve hasn't been to homecoming in years because he sees the other people who stayed in town all the time, and he has no interest in seeing the people who didn't. He can only answer the same questions so many times. Oh, I'm doing woodwork now. Yep, I still live right here. Nope, still not married, no kids.
He goes though, and he answers the uncomfortable questions. Because Eddie asked him to. Because no matter how long it's been, Steve can't deny that some part of him still...
He says goodbye after, and Eddie leaves again, and Steve tries not to think about that too much in the following days.
He's halfway into the project before he realizes what he's building. He'd seen Eddie's throne quite a few times back when. What he doesn't have memories of, he makes up. He adds his own touches too, making it a throne fit for a rock star, a nerd, a friend.
He carves ornate patterns, he creates scenes of dragons being beaten back by a man with a guitar, crowds of people that could be knights or concertgoers.
It's his favorite piece he's ever done, and his hands are shaking when he dials Eddie's number. He gets an answering machine and stumbles through a message.
"I made you something. I guess it's kind of silly, but it's here in Hawkins if you want it. Or I'm sure you can afford the shipping if you don't want to come. Just, I made you a chair. It's more of a... Well, you'll see. Unless you don't want to... It's Steve by the way." He hangs up before he can embarrass himself even more.
Eddie doesn't call him back. One day passes and then another. Steve tries not to let it get to him. He works on orders and new projects. He enjoys his little backyard oasis. He rents a few movies and thinks they're okay.
He's debarking some wood in his driveway when the rental car pulls up, Eddie stepping out in ripped jeans and an old Metallica tee. "Hi again, Stevie."
"Oh." Steve clears his throat. "The thing's in the garage. I'll..."
Eddie doesn't say anything for a long time, circling the throne, running his tattooed fingers over each little detail.
"You made this whole thing?"
"I did."
"For me?" Eddie looks at him then, one hand still touching the wood like he doesn't want to let go. Even under the harsh lights of the garage, his eyes are such a warm shade of brown that Steve forgets to breathe.
He nods. "For you."
"Why?"
There are a hundred answers Steve could give, but he spent so long not knowing who he was or who he wanted to be. Too long. "Because you'll always be the one that got away. Because some part of me will always want to make you smile no matter how long it's been."
Eddie falls into the throne like he just got the wind knocked out of him.
"You don't have to respond to that," Steve says. "You can just say thank you and take the chair."
"I can." Eddie blows out a breath. "But that would be incredibly stupid considering half my early ballads are about you."
"What?" Unfair. Steve doesn't have a chair to fall into.
"Oh sure, I changed the hes to shes for a while there because..." Eddie waves his hand. "But they're about you, Steve. God, I should've asked you out. I just thought..."
Hearing those words is a lot like seeing that carved bear all over again, something clicking into place that wasn't quite right before.
"Go out with me now then," Steve says. "Or stay in. I've got a frozen lasagna and I rented Contact."
"Steve Harrington? Asking Eddie 'the Freak' Munson on a date? Did hell freeze over?"
"Pfft." Steve takes a step closer toward what he wants most. "Hell froze over in 1986, Eddie. You were there."
Five months and a lot of long distance phone bills later, Steve opens Harrington Woodworking in Los Angeles. That same day, Eddie takes photos for Rolling Stone posing in an ornate throne in his living room. He tells the reporter exactly who made it and what he means. At concerts, he starts singing those ballads the way he always wanted to. More often than not, Steve stands in the wings singing along.

with a ring pop, i'll get down on one knee - m. s.

Fluff! ??? to Fiancés?!
A late night trip and you three stop by a convenience store. Abby finally gives you two the push you needed.
word count: 1,440 words
warnings: movie spoilers?
Tumblr media
"Okay, okay, okay. 80's or 50's?"
"Really? These are the best options?"
"We've been here for a while, I think we've exhausted all other interesting options." You reach for another bottle of soda, opening it and letting the fizz settle down before taking a sip. "Now, pick,"
The two of you were perched on top of the trunk of his car. Very late at night, the nearest landmark being a nearby convenience store where you bought some chips and drinks to enjoy while you wait 'till you both weren't feeling droopy to continue your road trip. Abby, sound asleep at the back seat, who said she wanted to "stay up with you guys", was very eager to go on this trip. Especially since she rarely gets to go out with you and her big brother. Poor thing fell asleep and you didn't have the heart to wake her, so Mike stayed to watch her while you went to purchase some refreshments. Now, at the back of his car, you two talked nonsense for what felt like forever.
"Uhh, the latter." He takes a chip from the bag and eats it, all the while your eyebrows furrow at his answer.
"Really?" The tone was laced with disbelief and you eagerly wait for his defense.
"What? You'd rather pick the 80's?"
"Uh, yeah? against the 50's who wouldn't?" You playfully nudge him on the shoulder, unknowingly bringing up his memories from his last job as a night guard at the pizza place. Your eyes widened when the realization hit you. "...Oh."
"Idiot." Mike flicks your forehead and you raise your palm to cover it after he does. You remembered that morning at the hospital when you received his call and rushed there only to find him injured, officer Vanessa unconscious, and Abby scared to leave his side. You could've sworn you almost passed out after hearing what happened a few hours before.
Ghost children possessing robot animals? Murderer who wears a yellow bunny suit? It all sounded funny but the serious looks in their eyes and their very REAL injuries made you believe them. Since then, you've been more active in helping them out. Whether it be moving in with them to help with the bills and keeping Abby company while Mike's out to look for a job or planning something for the three of you to enjoy, all to get them to recover and forget the whole ordeal about the pizzeria.
So now, 7 months after the incident, Mike got a job, and you both saved up some money to go on a trip for the weekend.
"I didn't realize! Sorry!" You sheepishly replied and Mike gave a small laugh. That moment made you pause for a bit. Mike had no time to relax for a long time, so it was refreshing to see him smile and laugh.
"When do you think we should get going? It's probably midnight by now and I am dying to sleep. Y'know? While you drive us the rest of the way there." He says and you playfully rolled your eyes at him.
"Hey! You said you were gonna stay up with me like I stayed up when you drove!" Mike shakes head and continues eating his chips.
"No, no, I don't remember making that kind of agreement." A playful smirk starts making its way to his face. "I do recall you insisting to stay awake with me even though I said you should go to sleep," This little-
"Yeah! Because we're traveling at night, can't have us end up in a ditch somewhere?!"
The car door opens and shuts. Turning around, you see Abby rubbing her eyes as she makes her way towards both of you. Mike calls out to her and helps her sit in between the two of you.
"Why didn't you wake me up?" Her droopy eyes turn to you and then to Mike.
"You looked like you were deeply asleep. Sorry, did we wake you?" Grabbing a cold bottle of water, bought specifically for Abby, you tried opening it. Noticing this, Mike grabs the bottle and opens it before handing it to his sister. You whispered "I loosened it for you" to him before Abby speaks again.
"No. But are we there yet?"
"Not yet. We stopped here because we were getting sleepy and wanted to rest for a bit before we go." You handed her the plastic bag that had 2 bags of chips left for her to pick. "You excited to be there already?"
She picks one from the bag and opens it, grabbing a chip and eating it. "Yeah. Can we go on more trips soon?"
You and Mike share a look, unsure how to respond, so he answers for you. "We'll see, Abs,"
She doesn't respond to that. Instead, she asks you another question. "Are you going to keep staying with us? I like when you're around."
"Of course. I'll be here until Mike kicks me out." She chuckles at your response before turning to Mike. "You're not gonna kick them out, are you?"
"We'll see, Abs."
You playfully glare at him and he shrugs.
"Why don't you two just get married?"
Abby continues to eat, unaware how her question sounded to the both of you, but aware of your unique kind of friendship where borderline lovers was the most appropriate thing to actually call what you and Mike had. The fumble of words from you two comes quick but Abby doesn't take back her suggestion.
"You two have known each other for years and we've been living together for months now. I know you two have arguments sometimes, but you always work it out." She whispers the last part but the both of you hear it clear as day. "Plus you said you like each other-"
Two voices yelled out, "Abby!" You and Mike look at each other, the realization setting in that she's right. When you two looked away, silence ensued. Mike was the first to speak. "Maybe...maybe marriage... is too..."
"Fast?"
"Yeah,"
Abby's smile grows but she's tired of waiting for the two of you awkwardly fumble your words and just wants the two of you to get together. Yes, she's noticed the way you take care of her and Mike and how Mike takes care of you. How the house has been much livelier with you around and how well the three of you have been since living under the same roof.
Mike's also noticed how much better the two of them have been since you've gotten closer to them. He can't deny he's embarrassed but also flustered when the parents of Abby's classmates mistaken the both of you as her parents--A story for another time. He's open to the idea. Looking back to the times you two stayed up to watch some popular sitcom that was playing on the TV or messing up a new dish you three wanted to try, Mike really felt at ease those days. And the fact that Abby loves you too is an added bonus.
"Just propose already! You can get married years from now, just ask them already!" Abby grabs his shirt and you laugh as you see her futile attempt to shake him.
Mike sees you and realizes he loves you. He cherishes you and wants nothing more than to see you smile and laugh over and over again. To be part of your life for the rest of his.
"Okay, okay, Abby stop." He grabs a hold of her hands before looking at you. "Will you-"
"You already don't have a ring, at least get down on one knee!" You laugh again at Abby.
Mike sighs and is ready to get up and down on the ground when he quickly runs to the convenience store. You and Abby share a look of confusion until he returns, unwrapping something in his hands. You couldn't see what it is until he got down on one knee and presented it to you.
He says your name softly and you get down from the trunk in front of him, smiling at the ring pop he's proposing with. "Will you marry me?"
You nod, giving him a small yes and let him put the ring pop on your ring finger. Too excited, Abby gets down and hugs you both so hard, you three almost topple over. But none of you cared. Abby was happy to see you and her big brother finally get together. Mike, relieved you said yes and was willing to be with him. You, happy to have these two brighten up your life.

just friends ; choi seungcheol x reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary choi seungcheol's been your best friend since elementary school, and now you're both eighteen, about to leave for university. the last thing that you want is to go to university as a virgin, so he offers to take your virginity. surely this won't make either of you question your feelings for each other, right? wc 5k tags slow burn, childhood best friends to lovers (somewhat), barb seungcheol, underage drinking/smoking, pwp, virgin!reader, loss of virginity, afab!reader, 18+ MINORS DNI

eighteen. what an age- when you were thirteen, you thought that by now you’d have a hot, popular boyfriend, have gone to hundreds of parties, have a huge friend group who would all go to the mall and travel together, and maybe even have a scholarship to harvard. but you started university in three months and you had nothing to show for it. it would keep you up at night, all the dreams you had when you were younger, and how few came true. you only had a couple of friends, a shitty job at a convenience store, and the last party you’d gone to was for your niece’s 8th birthday. what weighed on your mind the most, though, was that you still didn’t have a boyfriend- and you were still a virgin. university was your last shot to really live out those dreams, to go to parties, hook up with strangers, go clubbing.. but, god, the last thing you wanted was to lose your virginity to some random person you’d meet at a house party. but high school was over, and, really, what relationship could you establish with a man in a couple of months that would make him someone you’d want to lose your virginity to?
“seungcheol’s here for you!” your mom yelled from the kitchen. you came running to the front door with a smile on your face- he’s back from his vacation, fucking finally. “so we’re going to the beach?” you asked as soon as you saw him. “yeah, i think miles and his girl are coming, rosie is bringing some people too.” he smiled. “are you ready or are you gonna make me wait an hour again?” “the latter, i didn’t think you’d be coming so early.” he follows you to your room, sitting on the side of your bed as you pack. oh, choi seungcheol. your best friend since… sixth grade? you’ve watched him come and go through different relationships- he was someone you envied, living the guy version of the life you wanted for yourself. out of the handful of house parties you’d been to, he’d dragged you to almost all of them. you didn’t know what you’d do without him, he was always there for you, the one who introduced you to almost all of your friends, who would help you cheat on tests. without him, you’d be regretting your high school experience even more. “let’s go?” you pull your duffel bag over your shoulder, looking at him. “finally,”
he was one of the only people you knew who had his own car- his father got it for him for his seventeenth birthday. it wasn’t the best, but it was really nice. you were pretty sure it was a ford or something similar because it had one of those big open trunks people use to put wood and furniture in. no idea why he needed one of those, because he was always showing off how he was strong enough to carry anything by himself, but it was still cool. the two of you would put pillows and blankets in it and lay down, talking and drinking together, listening to music on your cheap bluetooth speaker. you got into his car, leaving your duffle bag at your feet, setting up your playlist and the aux while he started up the car. “i can’t believe you didn’t take me with you to the bahamas, you bitch.” you joked. “luggage costs are crazy, i already spend so much money on you,” he teased back. “it’s an hour drive to the beach, by the way.” “no problem,” after your playlist started up, the two of you drove in silence, partially. there was some small talk about the bahamas and a lot of you singing along to nicki minaj, who seungcheol always managed to sneak into the queue. “me and kim broke up,” seungcheol said during a particularly quiet song, his eyes still on the road. “and you didn’t tell me?” you replied, looking over at him with a shocked expression on your face. “yeah, i dunno. it just didn’t…” he trailed off. “it wasn’t a big deal to me.” “i liked her! remember when she gave you all those leftover cookies from… was it her church’s bake sale?” “yeah, i guess.” he stared off. “she was nice, i dunno why it didn’t affect me.” “god, remember when you broke up with sierra? that was fucking crazy.” you turned back, looking at the road, too. “sorry. why’d you…?” “it was her.” “shit, sorry.” “no, no, it’s fine, really. i lost interest and stopped talking to her as much and we called about it and decided to break it off.” “just like that?” “well not just like that. it wasn’t like i stopped talking to her all of a sudden.” he turned to you, smiling. “use your brain, dumbass.” “school is over, i don’t need to do that anymore.” you laughed. “but really, that’s crazy. i’m glad it’s not… bad, but, like, you two dated for a while.” “i wouldn’t say three months is that long,” he replied. “at least i’ll have a hot boy summer, or something. ewww, sorry. that was so bad.” “it was. but you’re right, have fun! emma’s single now, too. maybe you two can get together.” “i think i’m fine. i don’t know if i even want a girlfriend right now. maybe i’ll meet some hot twenty year old at uni. who knows.” he paused. “is emma really single?”
he turned onto a more bumpy, dirt road, and soon the sounds of the waves and music came closer and closer until the beach came into view. “parking’s gonna be a fucking nightmare.” he sighed, looking at the hundreds of cars parked throughout the parking lot. you picked up your phone, unplugging the aux cord to call rosie. “where is everybody?” you asked, putting the phone on speaker. “we’re near the playground and this barbeque thing. leia, where are we?” you could hear some people talking in the background. “leia’s sending a photo to you right now. bye!” “bye,” you hung up. “here, there’s a photo of the map… we’re at the entrance, right? we need to take a left until we see a washroom. can we stop at the washroom? i really need to pee.” “okay, be quick, though.”
after another half hour, you finally parked. “what did we bring?” you asked seungcheol as you both stepped out of the car. “just drinks and our swim stuff. don’t worry, just go ahead- i’ll carry everything.” you took your duffle bag and trudged through the sand- your cheap dollar store flip flops felt like they would break at any moment during the long journey, your heels burning every time they would touch even a bit of sand. “hey!” you called out, waving to everybody once you finally found them. “y/n!!” rosie replied, getting up and running to hug you, making you both fall on the ground. “ow, shit!” you exclaimed, getting up and laughing off the burning pain of the sand hitting your back. “sorry we took so long- cheol is on his way with everything. parking was crazy.” “can’t relate, we’ve all been here since six,” leia laughed. “miles and the other guys are in the water, we were gonna get lunch soon if you wanna come, though.” “i dunno, i think i might just settle in first. get comfy.” “totally fair, we can wait for you.” leia looked over to the water, where you could make out a bunch of guys swimming and splashing each other with water. “i don’t think the guys are getting out anytime soon, so don’t worry at all.” “thanks,” and then you heard seungcheol’s voice- well, his whine. “the sand…” he groaned, trudging towards you. when he finally reached you, he dropped the blue cooler and other bags down on the ground. “shit! that was torture…” “your fault for not asking for help.” you said, opening one of the bags and taking out a beach towel, laying it on the ground. “come on, sit down. tell the girls the news!” “what news?” rosie asked excitedly. “yeah what- oh,” seungcheol said. “it’s really not a big deal, y/n. me and kim broke up, that’s all.” “WHAT?” leia shouted. “tell me everything!” you got comfortable, sitting cross-legged under an umbrella while you listened to seungcheol recount everything.
“can someone help me with my sunscreen?” you asked. “rosie?” you turned onto your back and wiggled your shoulders. “no, you perv!” she laughed. you pouted jokingly before seungcheol approached you. “you can’t do anything by yourself, huh?” he teased, taking the bottle of sunscreen and opening it, putting some on your back and rubbing it in. “nevermind, seungcheol’s definitely the perv,” rosie replied. he laughed, and you closed your eyes, your head resting in your hands as you let the sun warm your body, waiting for seungcheol to finish. after a while, he hit your back gently a couple of times. “you’re welcome.” “thanks?” you replied, getting up. “let’s swim?” you asked the rest of the group. rosie and leia got up, taking off their sandals and flip-flops, agreeing immediately. “i’ll watch everybody’s stuff, since nobody else will.” seungcheol replied, sighing and crossing his arms dramatically. “thank you!!” you all called out to him as you ran off to the water.
the sun had set, and the air had gotten cooler. it was dark outside as you all laid together on the beach towels, the big, blue cooler seungcheol had brought now half empty. of course, seungcheol hadn’t drank a thing, despite his seemingly endless whining about just how bad he wanted to drink, how jealous he was of everyone who was drinking, how he wished you could drive.. it just went on and on. you hadn’t drunk, either, in forced solidarity with him. neither had miles’ girlfriend, bea, who was everyone else’s designated driver. you and seungcheol were lying down together, both wide awake from the chocolate starbucks doubleshot you’d shared an hour before. you both stared up at the sky. “it’s, like, two months until you leave.” seungcheol remarked. “a little less, right?” “yeah, but same thing. i can’t process it.” “i wish you’d been accepted. we could have gone together, rent a studio apartment. it’d look so cool. you’d have one side and it’d be, like, red or something, and mine would be… i dunno. it’d be cool.” “we should. maybe i’ll go online and move with you.” “that’d be so cool.” “i can’t imagine what it’ll be like without you.” “you can still call me. it’s not like i’m dying, stupid.” “yeah, but… you know.” “yeah,” silence. you shifted your attention somewhat to the conversation the rest of the people were having- something about how prom went, but you couldn’t really focus on it. “i’m leaving high school as a virgin.” you said, breaking the silence. “oh my god, you are. holy shit, that’s hilarious.” he started laughing. “i have no idea what i’m gonna do.” “what do you mean? you’re not gonna be the forty-year-old virgin or something. you’ll just lose your virginity to some college guy.” “i don’t really want that.” “don’t you wanna have fun in college? you mentioned that a lot.” “yeah, duh. but i don’t wanna lose my virginity to some random man.” “too late for you to not do that. you shoulda tried to get a boyfriend before high school ended.” “ugh, you don’t get it.” “what don’t i get?” “i dunno. this is weird.” more silence, but from the corner of your eye you saw him nod.
“what did you mean, about all of that stuff you were talking about earlier?” he asked on your way to the car. “what stuff?” “me not getting you wanting to lose your virginity or something. or not wanting to lose your virginity.” “oh.” you paused. “like, i dunno. i kinda wish i had a boyfriend or something. like i had had more of a life in high school. and now i have to just settle for losing my virginity to some guy i’ll probably never talk to again.” “isn’t that what you want?” “no, that’s what you don’t get. like i wanna have fun and, like, hook up with people or whatever. but i don’t wanna lose my virginity to a random person. that’s different.” “yeah, i get that.” “but, like, in a month and a half, you can’t really get a boyfriend. even if i did, i don’t wanna lose my virginity to someone i’ve known for less than two months.” “yeah.” you got in the car and waited as he started the engine. in the meantime, you set up the aux again. after a while, he broke the silence. “i can do it.” he said. “what?” “i’ll do it. if you want me to,” he added. “there’s so many weirdos out there. if they find out you’re a virgin they might, like, take advantage of you or something. we can do it, get it over with, you know?” you paused. it wasn’t a comfortable silence. “sorry. i don’t wanna overstep a boundary or anything.” he added, again. “no, no you didn’t. well you did but not in a weird way or anything. it’s just…” “yeah, i get it. i’m sorry.” “no, no, no. seriously, you’re fine. i’m not opposed to that idea or anything.” “yeah?” “yeah.. i mean, it’s better than what you said- losing my virginity to a weirdo or something.” “so then…?” “it’ll be weird, but let’s do it. i might change my mind but for now, let’s do it. yeah.”
you’d never thought of seungcheol in that way. maybe in your darkest, most desperate hours, but that was it. it wasn’t like you didn’t take notice to how huge his biceps were, or his fucking crazy jawline, or how perfectly everything on his face complimented each other, but.. you did that platonically. it would just be weird to do that. but now that the two of you had agreed to have sex together, you assumed nothing could be weirder than that. so you tried to will yourself to like him, or that’s what you told yourself. it wasn’t gonna be an enjoyable first time if you didn’t at least have some attraction to him, you thought. so you’d find yourself thinking about him a lot. at night, your mind would wander to his hands, his arms, and sometimes your fingers would brush against your clothed pussy, playing with it, imagining it was him. of course, it was all a part of your effort to have your ideal first time, at least, as ideal as it could be, considering it was with your best friend and not your imaginary boyfriend, and after high school had ended. you assumed sex was better when you were attracted to the person it was with, so it only made sense to create some attraction to him.
“have you ever.. thought about what you wanted?” the two of you were relaxing in the back of his car, where he’d put up pillows and blankets again. you’d brought some chips, and the two of you were drinking and eating, talking about whatever. “like, sexually?” you replied. “i guess. i mean for your first time.” “i don’t know. something romantic, in a bed, at night. i don’t wanna eat food first- i think that’s kinda gross. kissing someone after eating? ew..” “is that really it?” “yeah, i guess. i don’t really mind the rest.” “okay, okay.” he nodded. “i don’t wanna ask too many questions, it’s just… i wanna make sure that it’s special.” you blushed. “thank you,”
you’d arranged a date- the twelfth of august. you were leaving by the twentieth, so it seemed like a good time. it was the last day of july when you made the decision, and you found time flying by. seungcheol came over a lot more than he usually did, which was already a lot- he was your best friend, after all. as the twelfth grew closer and closer, you began to notice smaller things, like the way his eyes would linger on your chest and the flush that would appear on his face when you two were especially close. you pretended like you didn’t see it, the same way you assumed he pretended he didn’t see you looking at his arms a little too long when he crossed them. it was all a part of your shared, unspoken effort to make your first time more enjoyable, of course. the two of you were friends. just friends.
he’d invited you to the birthday party his family was having, but you didn’t feel like intruding on something like that, so instead you went to the party miles was throwing for him that night. bea picked you up in her car- you were nervous about the ride if you were being honest. it was the first time you’d ever driven in her car and you’d heard that she’d had to pay for the entire repair fee for her mom’s car after she got into a car accident. she swore that she’d learned her lesson but you would be lying if you said you weren’t scared out of your mind every time she took a turn. the party was small, with just your friend group and then some other friends, and then friends of friends. you stuck with leia, sitting beside her and listening to her talk about the date she’d gone on the day before. eventually, leia ran off with another guy, and you went to the front porch. two girls were sitting on the front chairs, and you took a cigarette they offered you. you weren’t a smoker, but you didn’t have anything else to do. you recognized the one who offered you the cig as bea’s sister- it was crazy how similar they looked. same hair, same nose, same lips, except she was at least five inches shorter than bea. after a while, seungcheol came out to the porch, too. you began to sing happy birthday to him, and the other girls joined in, too. after clapping, he asked you, “what’s up?” “huh?” “i was looking for you, i haven’t seen you this whole time. where were you?” “oh,” you paused, stubbing out your cigarette on the ashtray in between the two girls. “i was hanging out with leia, then i came here. i didn’t wanna be in your way, it’s your party.” “we’ve been friends six years, come on. you can’t be serious.” he moved away to another corner, out of earshot from the other girls. “come on,” he whispered. you followed him. “you’re friends with everyone else here, too. it’s kinda weird to just stick to your side the whole time. i don’t wanna seem like that kinda person.” “okay, fair, but i don’t think the people here think you’re like that. they all know you.” “okay, okay.” you said, holding his hand. “let’s go back, then.”
it was on the ninth, while you were at his house, eating leftover pizza and watching youtube, when he put his hand on your thigh. he was talking to you about a game he’d started playing, putting his pizza down so he could really tell you about it, and when the conversation drifted off into something else, his hand was still there. you knew if you did anything even slightly implying you were uncomfortable, he’d move it- seungcheol was always looking out for you. you let his hand rest there for a while until he had to get up to grab something. while he was gone, you thought to yourself about it. by the time he was back, you’d made up an excuse for everything- including an excuse for why you gently moved his hand back to the same spot it was before.
august eleventh, he came over. he was sitting on your floor, head resting against your bed, which you were lying down on. “you’re sure about tomorrow?” he asked. looking up at you. “yeah. why wouldn’t i be?” “i just wanna make sure.” he smiled. “no pressure at all.”
and then it was nine p.m., august twelfth. your parents were conveniently gone for the night, to a family friend’s house to celebrate something or other. you didn’t know and, honestly, you were so nervous that you didn’t really care. he knocked at your door and you nearly fell on your way there. “hi,” “hi.” he leaned against the doorframe slightly, smiling. “you’re sure?” “yeah.” you both made your way to your room, your face hot. “i’m sorry, i have no idea what to do… i thought we could watch a movie or something?” “yeah, of course.” he sat down on your bed. “don’t worry about it, really.” you sat down beside him, grabbing your laptop and opening up netflix. after you settled on a movie to watch, you both got comfortable and you hesitantly rest your head on his shoulder. to say it was awkward would be an understatement. it was petrifying. your palms were sweaty and your heart was racing and this was all before he even touched you. it was an hour into the movie when he put his hand on your thigh again. it was summer, so you were in shorts, which made the sensation all the more incredible, you felt his hand move up slowly until he was toying with the hem of your shorts. “can i take them off?” he whispered in your ear. “yeah,” you put the laptop down on the far edge of your bed, and he slid your shorts off, holding up your legs just slightly. you turned to look at him, and there was his face. maybe it was the adrenaline rush or maybe it was something more, but you closed your eyes and soon found your lips on his. you’d had your first kiss already, but this time it was different. you found yourself melting into the kiss, your hands in his hair his hands cupping your face, before you felt his hands moving and you shifted on top of him. he pulled away. “is this okay?” he asked. “yes,” you whispered, pulling him back into the kiss and letting him put his hands under your shirt. the sensation of his hands on your breasts left you feeling even more horny, grinding down onto his crotch. eventually, you pulled away, standing up on your knees and slowly sliding his jeans off of him. he took the opportunity to gently push you onto your back, getting on top of you. he kissed you one more time before slowly leaving kisses all over your body, moving from your face to behind your ear to your neck, sucking on your breast. “you’re gorgeous,” he whispered, his voice deeper than usual. he moved back to kissing you, and you felt his hands go under your underwear hem. you found yourself moaning into his kisses as he rubbed your clit, then slowly put one finger into you, his palm still on your clit as he inserted another. “you’re… really good,” you moaned, after a little while, he took his fingers out, and you still found your walls closing around nothing, “is it okay if i put it in?” he asked, his voice still low and husky. “mhm,” you looked up at him. maybe you were caught up in the moment, maybe it was the moonlight peeking from the sheer curtains on your bedroom window, or maybe it was something else entirely, something that wouldn’t go away when the sun came back up, but just the sight of him in the darkness, his long black hair just slightly obscuring his face as he looked up at you through his long lashes, made your eyes almost water. at that moment, all that you could think about was how lucky you were, how grateful you were to be in this situation, and how happy you were. “are you okay?” he breathed, snapping you back to reality. his brows furrowed, the lust in his eyes being replaced with concern. “y-yeah, i’m great.” you smiled, looking up at him. “just making sure.” he reached into the pockets of his now discarded pants, closing your laptop before grabbing a condom out of the pocket, opening the packaging, and putting it on. he held your hand as he positioned himself in between your legs, slowly sliding into you. “let me know if you’re uncomfortable.” he whispered. you closed your eyes, and the stretch of your walls hurt at first- but soon the pain turned into pleasure, the most pleasure you'd ever experienced.
you moaned as you leaned up to kiss him, using your free hand to bring him closer to you. he shifted a bit, suddenly thrusting into you at the perfect angle and leaving you a mess, moaning his name and when you weren’t, you could hear him moaning yours. it was such an intimate moment and the way he was fucking you was so perfect that you found yourself forgetting that he was your best friend. you were whispering praises to him, telling him how good he was and how big his cock was and all these things you would never have expected you’d be saying to choi seungcheol, but here you were. his thrusts got more sloppy and his kisses became more messy and passionate and you knew he was about to come. soon, you did too, and the sensation left your head blank. you felt him pull out of you and lay down beside you. “you want me to run you a bath?” he asked. “yeah,” you looked over at him. “thank you, cheol. that was…” “amazing? life-changing?” he joked. “mhm,” you kissed him. “i’m really glad we did that.” “yeah. come on, let’s get you cleaned up.”
he left after making sure you were all good, kissing you one more time before going. you didn’t think much of anything that night, but when you woke up your mind was racing- that was after you were able to confirm that the night you just had wasn’t a dream. you assumed seungcheol’s mind was racing, too, because aside from sending you some tiktoks and occasionally talking to you about something or other, it was radio silence from him. you were torn about it- on one hand, you were massively grateful. you knew it’d be awkward to talk to him after everything. but on the other hand, you were almost hurt. it was definitely irrational, and you knew that, but you almost felt like he didn’t talk to you because he didn’t like you after the two of you had sex or, worse, he had just been using you. then he called you, three days after everything. “hello?” “hey,” he said. “sorry for not talking to you for a while.” “yeah,” “i needed some time to think about things. it’s not like you did anything wrong though. i still need time, i’m calling to tell you that this has nothing to do with you,” he paused. “really, you were incredible, and that was one of the best moments of my life. and i don’t want to stop talking to you. i just need some time to myself for a bit.” “thank you,” you blushed. “but… yeah, that’s fine. don’t worry about it. but don’t take all the time you need. i leave in, like, five days.” you laughed, though there wasn’t anything funny. “yeah,” he replied, his voice somewhat… sad? you couldn’t really pinpoint what it was. “you gotta promise me that we’ll hang out at least once before then, ‘kay?” “okay,” he paused. “i gotta go, though.” “bye,” “see you,” he said before hanging up.
the phone call left you frustrated for the next few days, which only worsened how sad you felt to be leaving your home and your town. rosie and leia were constantly coming over, but, as much as you loved them, it wasn't the same as hanging out with seungcheol.
you'd been invited to leia's house on the nineteenth, to watch a movie or something. she drove you there, suspiciously giddy with excitement, and once you arrived at her house, you realized there was something more going on. she opened the door for you, and instead of being greeted by her parents and nobody else, you were greeted by a whole crowd of people. somehow, leia and rosie had managed to gather everybody for a surprise going-away party- even your cousin was there. you made your way through the crowd, talking to everybody, so happy from seeing all these people you loved and had spent your teenage years with that you forgot about everything with seungcheol entirely. in fact, you forgot about everything with him throughout most of the night. but then you found him, sitting alone and playing some game on his phone, and he looked up and saw you, and you immediately knew something was up. "can i talk to you?"
he took you to a bedroom and closed the door behind you. "i wanted to tell you something." he said. the two of you sat side by side on the edge of the bed. "i know it's really late to tell you this, but i figured because you're leaving tomorrow this is… my last chance to tell you." he paused. "i don't think it was just because of that night and i don't want you to think that, either. it's also not because of kim, even though the timing would make you think that… i was really thinking about this, and i think… i don't know how to say this, but…" you looked at him and he looked at you and suddenly it all clicked in your head. every little thing you made some stupid excuse for, like how you could only think about him when you touched yourself, or how you couldn't pull your eyes away from his crazy huge arms, or how your heart fluttered when you both made eye contact. it all made sense to you know. "i love you too, cheol."

Author note: This story is based on the romance novel Perfect by Judith McNaught. I've taken a few liberties with the plot and characters.
The coffee at this mountainside diner is good, warming your belly as you frown at the snow outside.
All the weather reports say there’s a storm coming from the east, but it doesn’t take a trooper to know that.
Even a city girl like you can see how the sky’s darkening, how the wind’s relentless, how the temperature is rapidly dropping.
You’ve got snow tires on, four wheel drive, emergency supplies in your trunk, but you think you won’t need them, you’re heading west and you’ve made good time on your way to visit your sister and her newborn.
Like your dad used to say, your family’s full of grit.
You swallow your smile when you see the man standing just outside the diner looking straight at you.
Did he think you were smiling at him?
You look down hastily.
The waitress comes round with the check you signalled for, you put money on the little acrylic tray and get ready to go.
By the time you step outside, the wind’s picked up even more, snow swirling, making your eyes want to screw shut under your beanie.
You don’t hear him until he’s almost on top of you.
He’s not a lot taller than you, and he’s not particularly dressed for the weather, in denim on denim, a parka. No hat or gloves.
His hair is dark, as are his eyes, and his skin is pale, like he doesn’t get a lot of sun.
He looks vaguely familiar but you can’t really place him.
‘You have a flat,’ he says, pointing to one of your front tyres.
You look down in dismay only to see that he’s right.
Shit!
‘I can help you change it, if you’ve got a spare,’ he offers.
‘Would you?’ you ask, grateful.
‘Yeah, not a problem.’
You show him where the spare and tools are, and as he crouches by the tyre, you’re very aware of how, unlike you, he doesn’t have gloves on.
You feel a surge of guilt.
‘Hey,’ you offer, ‘whilst you’re doing that, can I get you a hot drink or something?’
He looks up at you, hands braced on the flat.
‘I wouldn’t mind a coffee, if it’s not too much trouble.’
‘Of course,’ you say, relieved that he’s not too polite to take you up on your offer. ‘I’ll be right back.’
You hurry back into the diner to get him a coffee. As you wait you wonder if he might want a sandwich too, and impulsively, you order him a hot sandwich.
He can always say no if he doesn’t want it, you reason.
By the time you come out, he’s putting the flat in your trunk, tidying up the tools he used.
‘Thank you,’ you tell him, passing him the drink.
‘No problem,’ he says.
A little awkwardly, you hold out the wrapped sandwich. ‘I got you a sandwich too, if you want it. It’s turkey.’
He accepts with another murmured ‘thank you.’
You’re wondering if you should offer him money for his kindness when he says, hesitant, ‘I could use a lift, if you’re heading west. I’ve got a job interview I’m hoping to make it to.’
Now you’re the hesitant one. He’s shown you nothing but kindness, but he is still a total stranger.
He waits without looking at you, sipping his coffee, keeping his distance.
You think about his lack of warm clothes, and as you’re looking at him, you notice the crispness of the creases in his clothing, remnants of how they must have been folded when he bought them.
You think about his calloused palms and how he accepted the sandwich without hesitation.
‘Hey, it’s ok,’ he starts to say, and it’s that, more than anything else, that spurs you on to reply.
‘It’s fine,’ you say. ‘I’ll take you as far as I’m heading.’
***
He gets into the passenger seat, and from the sigh that passes his lips you realise that he really was as cold as you thought he might be.
You start the engine, and warm air starts to blow through your A/C vents.
You check that the GPS is still set and glance over at him.
‘You ready?’
You’re a mile or so out of the diner, listening to the radio, when it occurs to you to ask him his name.
‘I’m Y/N,’ you say.
‘Yoongi,’ comes the reply.
In here, away from the whistling wind, you can hear the gravel in his voice.
‘What job are you going for?’ you ask.
‘Just some construction job my friend’s lined up for me near Maisan,’ Yoongi says.
He glances in the rearview mirror.
‘I hope you get it,’ you tell him. ‘Do you live around there?’
He seems to hesitate.
‘I don’t mean to pry,’ you say, quickly.
To bridge the sudden silence, you say, ‘I’m going to see my sister and her new baby. She chose a good time to have him, right before a storm.’
You notice movement up ahead, a police roadblock.
Beside you, your new acquaintance sits up.
‘Nice and easy,’ he says, and you look at him, confused, until you notice that he has a gun in his hand.
Pointed right at you.
You straighten up so quickly your neck cracks.
‘What —-‘
‘Nice and easy,’ Yoongi says again, a hardness to his voice you haven’t heard up until now.
‘There are six shots in this gun, but I’ll only need one to hurt you,’ he continues.
Your hands tighten on the wheel, and your lips clamp together, trying to stifle the squeak of terror that threatens to slip out.
‘I just want you to know that I will hurt you if you try anything,’ Yoongi says. There’s a seriousness in his voice that makes your blood chill. ‘So nice and easy, get us past this roadblock.’
You’ve slowed automatically as you approach the uniformed policemen, your years of driving making your body do the expected things despite the way your head is reeling.
Yoongi has a gun, and he seems perfectly capable of using it on you.
The fear crystallises into a single sob before your throat closes completely. Your breathing quickens but you know you’ll need to look normal, unsuspicious, to get you and Yoongi past the police.
‘Are they looking for you?’ you ask. Your voice is shuddery, you’re trembling so hard.
In response, Yoongi jams the barrel of the gun against you, high up, against your ribs, so hard it’s like he’s impaled you.
‘Shut up and get us through this,’ he snarls.
Your lips snap together again, and you make a conscious effort to pull yourself together.
Just before you stop, Yoongi says, ‘If you try anything, I won’t just be trying to hurt you. I’ll kill you.’
His tone is low, and another shiver runs through you.
You roll down the window.
The police trooper leans in. ‘Where are you headed?’
‘We’re going to see my sister in Maisan,’ you say, grateful at least, that your voice is steady.
Beside you, Yoongi’s sitting perfectly still.
‘You’ve not picked a good time to go,’ says the trooper.
This time, it’s Yoongi who answers. ‘I did say we should wait, but my girlfriend’s been looking forward to seeing her new nephew.’
He shrugs, a picture of indulgent exasperation.
The trooper laughs along with Yoongi even as you try to make desperate eye contact with him.
‘Better carry on then, hopefully you’ll make it before the storm hits.’
Then he’s waving you off, and you have a split second of panic, a moment where you consider screaming, before Yoongi’s gun jabs into your ribs again.
Again, your body responds before you do, driving you away from your last chance to seek help.
***
Twenty miles out from the diner, Yoongi tosses your phone out of the window.
Forty miles out, he programs a different address into your GPS.
It’s another ten miles before you find your voice again.
‘You can take the car, you know, and leave me here. I can’t call anyone.’
Yoongi almost looks like he’s considering it.
‘I can’t leave you here out in the mountains in the middle of nowhere,’ he tells you. ‘You’ll die of exposure, especially if you can’t call for help.’
‘Also,’ he adds, almost as if it’s an afterthought, ‘you know the address of where we’re going.’
‘I didn’t see it,’ you say, too quickly.
Yoongi’s silent.
Finally, he says, ‘Just keep driving.’
‘Please,’ you plead. ‘Just let me go. I won’t tell the police where you’re heading.’
Yoongi’s grasp on the gun, still in his lap, tightens.
‘You’re a fucking idiot. Why the hell would you give a ride to a strange man you’ve just met?’
You don’t have a good answer to that.
‘You changed my tyre,’ you say. ‘I thought —‘
‘I slashed your tyre,’ he says, low, cold. ‘I was hanging around outside the diner, I saw you pull up, saw you were alone.’
His admission chills you.
Tears start to spill down your cheeks when you realise what a fool you were to trust him.
‘I just wanted to help you out,’ you tell him. ‘You seemed hungry and down on your luck, and you didn’t even have any warm c-c-clothes!’
You swipe at your cheeks furiously.
‘Didn’t have any warm clothes,’ Yoongi repeats, incredulous, scornful. ‘You’re some fucking good Samaritan.’
You’re crying quietly now, despairing over your naivety.
Yoongi doesn’t say anything for a good long while, and neither do you.
***
By the time you reach your destination, it’s snowing so hard you can barely see six feet in front of your car.
Snowy walls close in either side of you, buffeting you from the wind but heightening your sense of claustrophobia.
The clearing’s upon you before you quite realise it, and you end up stopping in front of a huge structure in the woods.
It’s more than a cabin, it looks like a proper house, from what you can make out, with a shed and a carport.
Yoongi reaches out and takes your car keys.
‘Wait until I come round to your side.’
He doesn’t point the gun at you, but you don’t need reminding.
He gets out, walks around to your side, pulls open the door, pushes you in front of him.
You try to take note of your surroundings, landmarks, but all you can see is snow.
Your boots clomp on the concrete as you approach the front door.
Behind you, you can hear Yoongi rustling, glancing at his phone before he punches numbers into the keypad discreetly placed by the door.
He cups a hand over the keypad, you don’t see a thing.
He pulls you in as he enters, and you’re initially just grateful to be out of the snow.
Yoongi says, ‘Take your coat off.’
He makes a move as if to do it for you when you don’t react quickly enough, and you snap into action, pulling the snaps apart, unzipping hastily.
He takes your coat, tosses it carelessly to one side, grasps your wrist, tight.
You flinch as he tightens a cable tie around your wrist and attaches you to the steel flap of a radiator by the entrance hall of the house.
‘I can’t trust you not to try to run,’ he tells you. ‘I won’t hurt you, but I can’t afford for you to interfere with my plans, not now.’
You’re barely listening at this point.
The terror of the last few hours has drained most of your energy.
Yoongi stands over you for a few moments, as if to make sure you aren’t going to bolt, and then he heads further into the house.
***
Time passes, you’re disorientated by the darkness brought on by the storm outside and your own sense of disjointedness.
It doesn’t seem like that long ago since you loaded your things into your trunk and set off from home, and yet, it seems like forever.
Gradually, you become aware of the hardwood floor under your salopes. The entry hall you’re being held captive in gives you the impression that this is a nice house.
Whoever had this built has money.
The ceilings are high, the wood panelling rich and beautifully rendered.
The radiator beside you has started heating up, the steel flaps burning you whenever you let your hand move too close.
Your snow boots have made puddles on the hardwood.
Where the hell are you? Who owns this place? Why did Yoongi have the code for the door?
If he has friends this rich willing to let him use their house why the hell did he need you to drive him?
Your mind swirling with thoughts you can’t reconcile, you pull your knees into your chest and tuck your chin in, wrapping your arms around yourself.
You fall into an exhausted, dreamless sleep.
***
You wake to complete darkness and a searing pain in your hand where you’ve let it fall against the radiator.
It all comes back to you in a flash.
The diner. The state trooper. The house. Yoongi.
Your hand hurts, badly, but it’s too dark to see.
As you straighten your legs, your foot hits something that falls with a soft thud, then rolls.
A water bottle.
You’re suddenly aware of how dry your throat is.
You reach for the bottle, but maddeningly, it rolls out of your reach.
There are tears on your face but you’re not crying, not really.
Maybe you are.
***
When you next wake, the cold thin grey light filtering in through the windows tells you it’s morning, or early.
You look up to see your captor standing over you.
You look at each other wordlessly.
Yoongi crouches next to you.
‘Do you need the bathroom?’ he asks.
You nod.
He reaches down to detach you from the radiator.
Your hand.
You can see it clearly now, the blistered, reddened side of your palm, the thin line of blood where the cable tie’s cut into your wrist.
You say nothing. You don’t know if you can form any words.
You get up carefully, follow Yoongi down the hall to a small bathroom.
‘I’ll give you five minutes,’ Yoongi says.
You take care of business, trying not to sob at the pain in your burnt hand and wrist.
The window to the bathroom doesn’t open, and there’s nothing that you can use to break it.
There’s a knock at the door, you feel a surge of hysterical laughter threatening to come out.
He’s kidnapped you, locked you to a radiator, and he’s knocking because he cares about your privacy?
The door opens, and Yoongi comes in.
You stare at the scissors in his hand.
‘Your wrist,’ he says.
You watch, detached, as he cuts the cable tie. It falls to the floor, and you instinctively raise your hand to your chest to rub at your wrist.
Yoongi says. ‘I have food for you.’
He takes you down another hallway, to a huge kitchen full of windows. The early morning sun filters in, bright and blinding, adding more of a sense of unreality to the situation you now find yourself in.
Yoongi gestures to a seat at the kitchen island, sets a plate in front of you, like he’s made you breakfast.
You stare in disbelief at the food.
‘The car’s coming for me in two days, I’ll let you go then,’ Yoongi tells you, like you’re making plans together.
Like you’re just two people who know each other, discussing plans over breakfast, instead of captor and captive.
Now you’re staring at him.
‘You’ll let me go?’ you ask. Your voice comes out in a rasp, you have a vague recollection of trying to drink water but being unable to reach.
Yoongi winces a little, pours out a glass of water that you gulp down.
‘You should have told me you wanted water,’ he says.
‘You took my phone so I couldn’t text you,’ you say, the snark coming out of your mouth surprising you.
His brow lifts. ‘You don’t have my number anyway.’
‘Don’t need it,’ you snap, gulping down your refill. ‘We’re not going on a second date.’
Now it’s his turn to stare at you.
‘You’re not my type anyway,’ he snaps back. ‘Eat your food.’
For a moment you contemplate going on a hunger strike but you suspect he wouldn’t give a shit anyway so you examine your plate.
You fork up some eggs and chew cautiously.
They’re good. Better than you expected. Your stomach growls as you eat.
The food’s doing wonders for your energy levels.
‘Why are you running from the police?’ you ask. ‘What did you do?’
‘I was convicted of murder,’ he tells you, cold.
‘Did you do it?’ you ask, unimpressed.
‘I didn’t, as a matter of fact,’ he replies, flat.
‘Wait. Were you in prison?’
‘I escaped,’ he tells you. ‘With a little help from my friends.’
You mull this over as you finish the last of your eggs.
‘You have friends?’
Yoongi gives you a look that makes your chest tighten a little.
‘Hard to believe, isn’t it?’ he agrees.
He takes your plate, gathers up your cutlery, turns his back to put them in the sink.
‘Don’t even think about throwing your glass at me,’ he says, back still to you.
Your hand stills on the counter.
You change the subject.
‘This is a nice house. Do your friends know they’re harbouring a fugitive from the law?’
‘My friends have nothing to do with anything,’ Yoongi tells you, giving you a hard look.
He sets out a bandage and some ointment on the kitchen island in front of you.
‘Your hand,’ he prompts impatiently, when you don’t make a move to take them.
You’re about to reach for them when he sighs, unscrews the top of the tube, drops a dollop on your burnt palm.
You stifle a hiss of pain as he rubs the ointment in.
‘I’m sorry,’ Yoongi says quietly.
He’s close to you now, so close you catch a whiff of the freshness of his shampoo.
‘You should be sorry,’ you say. ‘I thought you were just some guy who was down on his luck who needed a break, and next thing you’re waving a gun in my face and threatening to kill me.’
You can feel the tears threatening to rise again, but you blink them back.
Yoongi’s touch is gentle on your sore hand.
‘I am sorry. Believe me, if there were any other way I would have taken it. I promise, I’ll let you go. I have no intention of hurting you.’
He says the words with conviction but you know you can’t believe anything he says.
Trusting him is what got you into this in the first place.
You let him bandage your hand.
‘Which radiator next?’ you ask, resigned.
‘I won’t tie you up again, but I’ll have to keep an eye on you,’ Yoongi says, surprising you. ‘There’s a den we can sit in, if you want.’
You don’t see that you have any better options.
***
You start off in the furthest corner of the den from him, back to the wall, wary.
Yoongi ignores you completely as he turns on the TV, scrolls to the news.
You glance over the books on the bookshelf along one wall, but the TV catches your attention.
‘The search continues for Min Yoongi, the disgraced former rapper who was convicted of the murder of Han Jisung three years ago.’
Your gaze snaps to Yoongi, but he’s not looking at you, attention fully on the screen as an old media clip of him rapping plays.
‘The federal police are looking into several leads, and members of the public can contact the number onscreen if they have any information as to his whereabouts.’
The next story flashes up, and Yoongi sits back. You can see the tension leaving his body.
He catches the way you’re still gaping at him.
You blink, clear your throat.
‘So, you used to rap?’
Yoongi’s expression morphs into one of incredulity. ‘That’s your take-home from all that?’
You try again. ‘Too bad I don’t have my phone to call the number. Do you think there’s a reward?’
Yoongi stares at you.
‘I didn’t kill Han Jisung,’ he says.
He refuses to be drawn into any further discussion about it, and finally, you give up and pick up one of the books from the shelf.
***
Lunch is a sombre affair, sandwiches that you eat mechanically while looking at the grey outside.
The storm’s upon you, you doubt your snow tires would be up to the challenge even if you could get your car keys off Yoongi.
There’s no visibility at all, and if the wall of ice that’s forming around the glass of the floor to ceiling windows of the house wasn’t enough to deter you, the fact that you have no idea where your parka is certainly helps put you off.
You grew up in a mountainous area like this, and you’ve got a healthy respect for the weather conditions when it's like this.
You wonder how your sister’s doing, and your new nephew, if they’ve noticed you’re missing yet.
Maybe they think you’ve stopped to seek shelter and are waiting for the storm to pass before you continue on your journey.
You wonder if they’ve put your lack of communication down to a signal failure.
You wonder if anyone will notice you’re missing.
Your thoughts drift to Seokjin, the man you’ve recently had a few dates with.
He’s a good looking guy, outmatching you in looks if you’re being honest about what you think, but he seems to like the way you look, and to enjoy spending time with you.
You realise that Yoongi’s talking to you.
‘Are you all right?’ he asks, nodding to your half eaten sandwich.
‘I’m fine,’ you answer. You pull a face. ‘Well apart from being held captive against my will.’
Yoongi looks like he’s resisting the urge to roll his eyes.
‘Were you really going to see your sister?’ he asks. ‘Will she notice you’re missing?’
You eye him narrowly. ‘I don’t think anyone’s sending out a search party for me just yet, if that’s what you’re asking.’
Yoongi says, unexpectedly, ‘Why not? You’re pretty, you’d catch attention on the front page of the newspapers.’
You say, incredulously, ‘I bet dozens of women go missing every single day.’
‘They probably do,’ Yoongi agrees.
‘How did you get put in prison if you didn’t kill that guy?’ you ask, changing the subject. ‘I’m sure you could afford a good legal team.’
Yoongi takes a while to answer.
‘I was fucking Han Jisung’s fiancee.’
You raise a sceptical brow at him. ‘And?’
‘I think his half-brother set me up.’
You mull this over.
‘So what’s the plan? You escape from prison and leave the country?’
Yoongi shrugs, but his gaze is hard.
‘I stay on the run until I get enough evidence for a re-trial. Prove my innocence.’
‘Seems a long shot,’ you say, but you have no desire to piss him off, at least not while he’s got a gun in his possession.
‘I have influential friends who are willing to help,’ Yoongi says, simply.
You say nothing.
‘Do you know what it’s like to be put away for life for something you didn’t do?’ Yoongi asks, suddenly. ‘I’ve lost three years of my life to this, there’s no chance of parole for another 7 years.’
His voice rings with anger and frustration.
‘I’m sorry,’ you say.
You have no idea if he’s telling you the truth, but you’re convinced of one thing. He believes it.
If he’s telling the truth, you can’t think of anything more awful.
‘Some say I brought this on myself,’ Yoongi says.
He shakes his head. ‘I don’t blame them. I was an asshole and a womaniser.’
‘That doesn’t surprise me,’ you retort.
Yoongi looks at you, momentarily speechless with surprise.
Then he laughs.
‘Has no one ever taught you not to make fun of a man with a gun?’
You look at him seriously. ‘You promised you’d let me go in two days. Was that a lie?’
‘No,’ he answers. His eyes meet yours, gaze steady and unwavering. ‘I’ll keep my word.’
With him looking at you like this, you almost believe him.
***
Night’s falling, or so you think, it’s been dark all day but you get the sense that daylight’s fading fast.
Yoongi gets up, says, ‘Come on, I’m going to bed.’
‘You want a bedtime story?’ you ask, tetchy.
He just waits patiently by the entrance of the den for you to join him.
‘Any chance I could take a shower?’ you ask.
You’ve been in the same clothes for a day and a half, and you feel pretty grimy.
‘Sure,’ Yoongi says, surprising you. ‘Need clothes?’
Yoongi takes you to what looks like a pretty impressive master bedroom, with an equally luxurious looking bathroom.
He rummages in a drawer, hands you a set of grey sweats.
He says, the faintest note of embarrassment in his voice, ‘There’s no women’s clothes here.’
You accept the clothes with a murmured ‘thanks.’
Yoongi says, ‘the door doesn’t lock, but I won’t walk in on you. The window’s too high to jump from.’
You eye him.
‘I have no interest in walking through this snowstorm without a coat.’
You raise an eyebrow. ‘Unless you want to give me the car keys?’
Yoongi chooses not to answer, steps back so you can close the bathroom door.
You get undressed quickly, step under a shower of water so hot it feels like heaven after you’ve been cold most of the day.
There’s toiletries that you avail yourself of, and by the time you get redressed, you feel practically human again, burnt hand and sore wrist notwithstanding.
You wrap a towel around your hair, step out to see Yoongi sitting on an armchair by the bed.
His gaze flicks over you once, his expression unreadable.
‘I don’t want to tie you to another radiator,’ he says.
You wait to hear where he’s going with this.
‘I’m going to lock the bedroom door. You can share the bed with me, or there’s that couch.’
‘I’ll take the couch,’ you say.
You get onto the couch, pull a blanket over your head, and you must be more tired that you thought, because you’re thinking of everything Yoongi’s told you, and then you’re not thinking of anything at all.
***
You wake in complete darkness, quiet save for your own breathing.
As your eyes adjust, you realise that the lump near the window is Yoongi.
He’s looking out, facing away from you.
‘What time is it?’ you ask.
Yoongi inhales, keeps looking out.
‘Sometime after midnight,’ he says. ‘Does it matter?’
You sit up, curl your legs under you.
His profile is strangely lovely, the slope of his brow, the high bridge of his nose, his jaw.
‘What are you going to do if you manage to prove your innocence?’ you ask.
It’s a clumsy question, but Yoongi doesn’t seem to mind.
‘I’d like to live near a beach,’ he says. ‘Make music. Be away from people for a bit.’
You guess there’s not a whole lot of privacy in prison.
‘I have a beach hut,’ you say. ‘We used to spend summers at the seaside. When my parents died, my sister and I inherited it.’
‘Yeah?’ Yoongi asks, turning towards you.
‘Yeah. We swam a lot. Explored caves. Did some rockpooling.’
‘Sounds fun,’ Yoongi says. ‘When I was a kid I spent summers trying to earn money.’
‘Yeah?’
‘I did a lot of gigs, trying to get exposure. I had my own crew though.’ He sounds wistful. ‘We busted our asses.’
He laughs. ‘When I signed my first record deal I got a house so my crew would always have a roof over their heads.’
‘No diamond encrusted chains?’ you tease.
‘Baby, that was after I got my first platinum record,’ he shoots back.
You laugh, and after a moment, he does too.
‘You got a job?’
You look up at the ceiling.
‘I teach,’ you tell him. ‘Grade school. I’ve got a class of seven year olds.’
‘You do have that whole teacher vibe,’ Yoongi remarks.
You’re amused.
‘What whole teacher vibe?’
‘You know. Responsible, prepared for everything. I mean, I saw the supplies in your trunk.’
You can’t argue.
‘You’re too soft,’ Yoongi continues. He’s still turned towards you. ‘You shouldn’t have offered me a ride.’
‘Like I said,’ you reply. ‘You looked like you needed help.’
He scoffs. ‘If I were your man I’d teach you to make any man regret even thinking about messing with you.’
‘I don’t need a man to teach me that,’ you say.
Yoongi shrugs, a rustle of his sweatshirt.
‘All I’m saying is you should work on looking less sweet and harmless.’
You toss a couch cushion in his direction.
‘I’ll show you how to crush a trachea tomorrow if you want,’ Yoongi volunteers.
‘Can I practise on you?’ you mutter, disgruntled.
Yoongi just laughs.
He turns back to the window.
It’s too dark to tell if the snow’s still falling but it doesn’t make a difference to you, because soon enough, you’re asleep again.
***
Yoongi’s quiet today, prepping breakfast with a distracted concentration that makes you wonder what’s on his mind.
You’re fixing coffee, looking for filters.
You pull open a drawer and freeze.
Out of the corner of your eye you can see the way Yoongi’s back stiffens.
There’s a revolver in the drawer. The same gun Yoongi used on you that first day.
Yoongi turns around slowly, and your eyes lock.
He’s too far away to have any chance of getting to it before you.
Yoongi tilts his head.
‘It’s fully loaded,’ he says. ‘You cock the trigger to arm it. Point and shoot. It’s reliable. It doesn’t jam.’
You blink at him.
‘The car keys are in my pocket. The snow’s still a little crazy but if you wait a few hours it might settle. It’s safer to go tomorrow.’
Thoughts swirl in your head, too much for you to process.
Finally, you reach out, and close the drawer wordlessly.
‘You’ll let me go tomorrow?’ you ask, wondering if you’ve just made the most stupid decision of your life.
‘I’ll let you go tomorrow, I promise you. Even if my friend doesn’t come through.’
You can’t look at him.
You can hear him approaching, but instead of heading for the drawer, he heads for you.
‘Thank you,’ he says.
You look over.
His eyes are serious. ‘It’s been a while since anyone who didn’t know me before trusted me.’
‘Like you said, I’m dumb and soft,’ you reply. There’s a wobble in your voice that belies the snarky tone you were going for.
His hand lands on your shoulder. It’s gentle.
‘You’d be eaten alive where I come from,’ he agrees, when you look his way again. ‘But that’s never going to happen, if I have anything to do with it.’
He squeezes your shoulder, reassuring. ‘Forget the coffee. I’ll make it. Go and eat.’
***
The unfamiliar sound from overhead is making the wineglasses rattle.
You glance at Yoongi.
He’s quicker than you, mouth set in a straight line, heading for the window in the lounge.
‘What is it?’ you ask, but a moment later, you know.
It’s a chopper, flying directly overhead.
Yoongi turns to you.
‘If that’s the police, stay inside, hands up, away from the windows whilst I turn myself in.’
You’re staring at him, again feeling like you’re three steps behind.
‘It’s the way that it’s safest for you,’ he says, patient. ‘They’ll want you to come in for questioning once they take me in. Just tell the truth, don’t try to hide anything.’
Your throat feels like it’s filled with cotton, your heart’s pounding in your ears.
‘They won’t hurt you, will they?’
‘There are other ways to hurt a man than shooting him on sight,’ Yoongi replies. The bitterness is back in his voice again.
There’s a truth to his words you can’t deny.
Overhead, the noise intensifies, until finally, it starts fading away.
You don’t know if it’s just wishful thinking at first, but eventually it becomes clear that the chopper’s becoming more distant.
Yoongi hasn’t moved from his spot by the window.
‘They’re not here for you,’ you say, unnecessary, but the silence is so loaded you have to fill it with something, anything.
‘Not this time,’ Yoongi agrees.
***
Around mid-day, Yoongi switches on the news in the den.
You don’t have to wait long for an update.
‘The search for convicted murderer Min Yoongi intensifies. CCTV footage from a mountainside diner near east of Maisan suggests that he was aided in his journey by an unidentified female driving a 2004 Grand Cherokee Jeep.’
You watch, your heart in your stomach as grainy footage of Yoongi getting into your car is played.
The clip is less than 10 seconds, and your face is barely visible, but it’s definitely you.
The same information about how to get in touch with the police flashes up, but you’re beyond listening.
You get up shakily, rush to the bathroom, and throw up the partially digested remains of your breakfast.
By the time you emerge from the bathroom, Yoongi’s waiting outside.
‘Are you ok?’ he asks. He’s holding out a glass of water that you accept automatically.
‘Yeah,’ you say. You take a big gulp, swipe at your face. ‘Am I in trouble, Yoongi?’
‘You’ll have to make a statement when you get to your sister’s,’ Yoongi tells you. ‘Tell them I forced you at gunpoint.’
You think of the gun you had the opportunity to take this morning.
‘I offered you a ride voluntarily,’ you say.
‘I don’t give a fuck,’ Yoongi says, harshly. He steps forward. ‘And they won’t give a fuck, either. This won’t affect me, I’m already a convicted murderer. But it’ll affect you if they think you helped me.’
He slams his open hand against the wall next to him, startling you.
‘You need to wise up. I don’t care if you throw me under the bus, and it won’t make a difference to the charges against me. But this could affect your future, so you need to do whatever it takes to make sure you come away clean from this.’
What he’s saying makes sense, but he doesn’t know you.
‘I promised them,’ you burst out.
Yoongi stops dead. ‘What?’
‘I was adopted, when I was eight,’ you say. The words are coming out in a rush now, garbled, and you’re not sure if you can make him understand but you need to say it all.
‘I promised my adoptive parents I’d never lie again. I was some dumb kid when they adopted me, I’d been in and out of foster homes. I’d developed a thing for taking things I wanted.’
Stealing, your inner voice says, accurately.
‘And when my parents adopted me, I promised them I’d never lie again.’
Yoongi’s staring at you now, incredulous.
‘I’ll tell the police the truth,’ you tell him. ‘But I’m not going to ‘throw you under the bus’.’
Yoongi lets out a long breath. ‘Fucking hell.’
He shakes his head. ‘I wish I’d never got in your car.’
You kind of wish the same thing.
***
Yoongi’s cracked open a couple of beers with your dinner.
‘Be careful when you’re crossing the stream tomorrow – the bridge is hard to see at the best of times, and I don’t think the snow’s made it any easier.’
‘Yes, dad,’ you say, rolling your eyes.
You’d listened the first time he said it, but he’s repeated himself a few times now.
He’s acting like he’s more worried about you getting to your sister safely than himself evading the entire manhunt that’s looking for him.
‘I did survive an entire adulthood without you, you know,’ you say, teasing.
He ignores you.
‘There’s an SOS box two miles west when you get to the main road —’
‘Yes, I know how that works,’ you say, cutting him off.
‘And if any man sends you dick pics you should block him right off the bat,’ Yoongi finishes.
You stop, processing his words, then realise he’s joking.
Your laughter makes the frown line between his brows disappear.
‘And you don’t owe any man anything even if he makes you come,’ Yoongi continues.
You raise an eyebrow at him. ‘Should I be writing this wisdom down?’
Yoongi frowns. ‘I just don’t want anyone to take advantage of you.’
‘Show me how to crush a trachea,’ you suggest.
Yoongi swigs his beer.
‘Yeah, good idea.’
He gets up, pushes his sleeves back.
You catch a glimpse of a tattoo on his upper arm.
‘If any asshole tries anything with you, you should go for all his weak spots.’
He points to his own neck, the hollow between his collarbones. ‘Jab them right here, elbow up into his nose, knee into his balls. Then, fucking run.’
He holds out his hands. ‘Come on, try me.’
You look at him uncertainly. ‘You want me to hit you?’
Yoongi says, patient, ‘Hit me now so when you hit the next asshole you’ll know how to do it right.’
‘Who are all these assholes that I’m meeting?’ you ask, but you comply anyway.
Yoongi rolls his eyes as you jab your fingers into his neck.
‘Harder,’ he says, grabbing your hand.
‘I don’t want to hurt you —’
‘Hit me as hard as I shoved that gun into your ribs,’ Yoongi says.
The memory makes you wince, and you redouble your efforts with the next jab.
When he coughs and splutters, you jerk your elbow up, straight into his nose.
He’s doubled over now, but there’s one last move he’s asked you to do.
You knee him in the balls, and he grabs your thigh at the last second so hold off the blow.
You wrench his hand off and take two steps back.
‘Fuck,’ Yoongi swears.
He folds over onto the kitchen floor, still coughing, eyes watering.
‘You’re supposed to run now,’ he wheezes out.
‘Do you — do you want some water or something?’ you offer.
He shakes his head. ‘I think you’re good. You’re pretty damn quick.’
‘Sorr—’
Yoongi fixes you with a glare. ‘Don’t even think about apologising,’ he scolds. ‘You fuck the asshole up, and then you run. You did it perfectly.’
‘Can I practice it again?’ you ask, sweetly.
Yoongi says, ‘Yeah —’
It takes him a moment to realise you’re joking.
***
Yoongi steps out of the shower, fully dressed, his hair still wet, making little trails of wet course down the neck of his sweatshirt.
You’re already on the couch, covered in a fluffy duvet.
‘You can take the bed if you want,’ he offers. ‘I’ll take the couch.’
‘I’m fine,’ you tell him.
He sits on the edge of the bed, towel drying his hair.
You don’t realise you’re staring at him until he asks, voice dry, ‘Something on my face?’
‘Nothing,’ you answer, startled. ‘You look good clean.’
His laughter is deep, gravelly. ‘I’d have taken a shower earlier if I’d known you preferred me clean.’
‘You should get clean for yourself,’ you answer, primly, but your lips are curving in a smile anyway.
‘Your hair looks pretty like this,’ he says.
You tug at a lock of hair, self-conscious.
‘I’m surprised you’re not better at handling compliments,’ Yoongi continues. He’s looking at you now, teasing in his voice. ‘Given how pretty you are.’
You bury your face in your duvet.
‘Stop teasing me,’ you say, muffled.
He seems to hear you just fine.
‘I’m not teasing,’ he says. ‘I’m just telling you what I think.’
‘Just turn the lights off,’ you grumble.
Yoongi laughs again. ‘You’re not the first woman to tell me to shut up, to be fair.’
He gets up, turns the lights out.
***
You wake in the middle of the night to Yoongi groaning, tossing and turning in bed.
‘Yoongi?’ you call, sitting up to look at him.
He doesn’t answer, but his groaning intensifies.
You get up and pad across the room to him.
He’s drenched in sweat, thrashing in the sheets, holding out his hands.
He’s having a nightmare.
‘Hey,’ you say, grasping his hand.
He sits up abruptly, looking around in the dark, bewildered, disoriented.
You don’t have to think about it.
You pull him in a hug, wrapping your arms tight around him. ‘You’re fine. It was a nightmare.’
You don’t think he’s really listening, but he holds you back.
His heart’s thumping so hard you can feel it under your arm.
‘You’re fine,’ you tell him again.
Eventually his grip loosens, and he pulls back a little.
‘That was some bad dream,’ you say, breathless from how tightly he’s been holding you.
He doesn’t answer, and you realise he’s staring at your lips.
His kiss takes you by surprise, but you don’t pull away.
His lips are soft and warm. When he licks into your mouth you can’t help the whine that falls from your lips.
Your hand fists in the material of his sweatshirt as he kisses you again and again, pulling you into a haze of pleasure so deep it takes you a moment to realise he’s stopped, his hand on your side, on your bare skin, under your top.
He says your name.
‘Do you want this?’ he asks. ‘We don’t have to do this if it’s not what you want.’
‘This?’ you ask. ‘You mean us kissing like this?’
You run your hand along his chest, stopping when you get to the waistband of his sweats.
‘You mean touching each other like this?’
Your hand delves lower, and he lets out a low groan as you wrap your fingers around his hardness.
‘Like this?’
‘I don’t want you to do anything you don’t want to do,’ Yoongi says, his hand closing over yours.
‘I want to do this with you,’ you tell him.
He groans again, pulls you fully onto the bed, helps you tug your sweatshirt over your head.
His warm hands slide up from your waist, making slow passes over your sides, and by the time he cups your breasts, your nipples are fully hard.
‘Don’t tease, Yoongi,’ you say, trying not to moan as he rolls a nipple under his thumb.
‘Not teasing,’ he says, voice low, thick. ‘I just — fuck, you’re so pretty–’
He dips his head, and at the first flick of his tongue against the tip of your breast, you moan.
‘Yoongi,’ you plead.
‘I’ve got it,’ he tells you, lifting off your breast. ‘I’ve got you.’
Yoongi mouths at your breasts until your hips are writhing under him.
‘Please, please,’ you plead.
He tugs at your sweatpants, and when you raise your hips to help him get them off, he leans down and presses a warm kiss to the bare skin over your hipbone.
‘Wanna taste you,’ he tells you.
He pushes your thighs apart, stops with his face over your core for a split second, breathing you in.
Then he kisses you, open-mouthed, tongue delving into your cunt like he’s starving for you.
Your moan changes into a cry of pleasure as he licks at you, nose nudging your clit.
You reach out for something to grab, fisting the sheets, and Yoongi’s hand grips the flesh of your thigh, firm.
‘Shit,’ he says, ‘ you’re so wet you’re gonna make me come.’
The idea of him coming before he gets inside you could make you cry.
‘Get inside, Yoongi,’ you moan.
‘Not gonna last, not with you like this,’ Yoongi tells you. He strokes between your legs, presses his thumb in firm strokes over your clit, licks into your cunt again, and you cry his name as you come.
‘Fuck, that’s my good girl,’ Yoongi grunts. ‘Can you take me now?’
He slides his cock into you, hard, thick, whilst you’re still pulsing from your orgasm, and you keen with the pleasure of it.
He’s breathless, head thrown back, eyes shut as he moves, fucking you deep.
You kiss along his bared throat, and he swears. ‘Fuck, baby, stop – I can’t —’
He pulls out suddenly, and a moment later you feel the warmth of his cum spurting on your belly.
‘C’mere,’ he says, pulling you close, kissing you deep. ‘Stay.’
***
You wait on the porch whilst Yoongi drives your car out of the carport. He pulls up in front of the porch, gets out.
‘Remember what you have to do?’ Yoongi asks.
‘Yeah,’ you say.
You’ve talked about it so much you don’t think you can bear to go over it again.
‘Drive safe, ok?’ Yoongi says. He’s looking at you, intently. ‘And thank you, for everything.’
‘Good luck with being exonerated,’ you say.
It sounds stupid, you sound stupid, but you don’t know what else to say.
Yoongi walks you over to your car, waits until your seatbelt’s buckled.
‘I’ll see you, Yoongi,’ you say.
‘Take this,’ he says.
You look at the phone number he’s got scribbled down on a scrap of paper.
‘It’s a burner phone. I can’t check it all the time but do you think you could —’
He breaks off mid-sentence, then pushes on. ‘Do you think you could text me when you get to your sister’s? I just want to know you’re safe.’
‘Sure,’ you say. You slide the scrap of paper into the pocket of your salopes, zip it up.
‘Good,’ Yoongi says.
You reach out, tug the collar of his parka.
His kiss is as good a way to say goodbye as any, you think.
Yoongi closes the door, waits on the porch as you drive away.
He gets smaller and smaller in the distance, and eventually, you can’t see him at all.
***
It’s been nearly a month since you left Yoongi at the house.
You’d pulled up at your sister’s house to find out she’d just filed a missing persons report on you.
You’d had an emotional reunion with your sister, an equally emotional introduction to your new baby nephew, and one meal and one hot shower later, you’d found yourself at the police station, being questioned by a couple of detectives who’d regarded you with suspicion so strong it was a short step from open accusation.
You’d been questioned for hours but had eventually been allowed home. You’d been truthful, as you’d told Yoongi you would be, apart from one thing.
It was only later, when you were on your bed in your sister’s spare room, that you’d picked up your phone and scrolled to the name you’d saved Yoongi’s number under.
You’d typed out a text, two words, unincriminating, you’d thought.
I’m safe.
The next morning, there was a text back, similar to yours in brevity.
I’m glad.
You’d refrained from texting again, or calling, not wishing to put Yoongi at risk in case anyone looked into your phone records.
You’d been called in again for questioning on two separate occasions after the initial interview, once by people who’d introduced themselves as federal agents.
You’d thought that was the end of it until the media got hold of your identity.
There was a week or so of reporters stopping you outside your house, waiting for you in the school car park, until eventually something more newsworthy came along.
You’d been photographed more times in that week than you’d even been in your life.
You’ve taken to watching the evening news every night, but as time stretches on and Min Yoongi hasn’t been found, he’s been dropping down the list of top stories, barely scraping a mention.
You’re glad.
You hope he’s closer to getting what he wished for.
***
‘Y/N,’ says Bora, your head of department. ‘Mr Lee wants to see you.’
You look up from your grading, a little surprised. ‘Did he say what it was about?’
‘Nope, just that he’s free now.’
You pocket your phone, straighten your ID badge and get up.
Mr Lee is the school principal, and you’d organised a meeting with him when the media frenzy over your involvement with Min Yoongi was at its peak, but you’ve not seen him since.
Mrs Choi, his PA, waves you in.
‘Mr Lee,’ you say in greeting. ‘Did you want to see me?’
‘Yes, please come in and have a seat,’ Mr Lee says.
He’s a serious man in his mid forties, and as far as principals go, you know he’s got a good reputation.
‘There’s been a complaint put in about you,’ Mr Lee says, sparing you any preamble.
Your stomach drops.
‘What about?’ you ask.
‘I know the media furore has died off over Min Yoongi, but the PTA has fielded a number of concerns raised by worried parents over your involvement in the case.’
You’re taken aback. ‘A number of concerns? It’s not just one —’
‘I’m sorry,’ says Mr Lee, and to his credit, he does seem genuinely upset. ‘I’m going to have to ask if you can take a few weeks off.’
‘Off?’ you ask, worried.
‘It’s not a suspension,’ Mr Lee says, somehow giving the impression that a suspension is exactly what it is. ‘You’ll be paid, and at the end of four weeks we’ll meet again to discuss what your future is at this school.’
You’re trying to make sense of this. ‘My future at this school?’
Mr Lee gets up, moves to take the seat next to you. ‘I’m hoping that having you off teaching for a month will give enough time for these parents to realise that you’re not a bad influence on their kids.’
‘And if they don’t?’ you ask.
‘I’m hoping they will.’
You swallow, and to your horror, tears prick the back of your eyelids.
You blink them back.
‘Should I look for another job, Mr Lee?’
‘It doesn’t hurt to keep your options open,’ Mr Lee says gently.
You suppose that’s that.
***
You wake to a dozen missed calls and texts from your sister.
You blink blearily at your phone and swipe to answer.
‘Yeah?’ you grunt. ‘Is everything ok?’
‘It’s Min Yoongi,’ your sister says. ‘He’s all over the news.’
You sit up abruptly. ‘Is he ok?’
Your sister, who’s heard all about your time with Yoongi, barring the details of your one-night stand, laughs.
‘He’s more than ok. Get online, sis. There’s a press statement you might want to watch.’
You’re still a little drowsy, but by the time you’ve got your laptop open and made yourself coffee, you’re wide awake.
Your phone rings again whilst you’re reading about how new evidence and a new witness was brought forward, resulting in a swift retrial.
Distractedly, you swipe to answer.
His voice makes you stop in your tracks.
It’s gravelly, low, with the distinct mix of sardonic and soft that brings you back to the house in the woods, over a month ago now.
‘Hey,’ he says. ‘How’re you keeping?’
You close your eyes, suck in a breath.
‘Jeez, you telemarketers are getting a little personal, aren’t you?’ you ask.
His laughter makes you feel warm inside.
‘I just wondered if you wanted to go get dinner with me sometime.’
‘Depends,’ you answer. ‘Are we going to have to avoid the police?’
‘Always,’ he says, making you smile. ‘But I’m a free man now, I guess you haven’t heard.’
‘Your friends came through, huh?’
‘All of them,’ he says, the warmth in his voice palpable even through the line. ‘Including you.’
***
You’re a little nervous as you wait for Yoongi at the restaurant he picked. It’s a little out of the way for you, but at least it’s not snowing.
He’s dressed in black, a cashmere sweater that sets off the glow in his skin, his hair styled back.
The rings in his fingers, the earrings in his ears gleam in the golden light.
He’s so beautiful you can’t quite believe he’s real.
Yet it’s him who stops in front of you, gaze flickering over you with a flattering intensity.
‘How can you be even prettier than I remember?’ he asks, tilting his head.
‘Guess you have a bad memory,’ you say. You’re smiling so hard your cheeks are hurting, but Yoongi doesn’t seem to mind.
‘I’ve thought about you a lot,’ he says.
‘Yeah?’
Yoongi pulls out your chair for you.
‘Yeah. I saw the footage of those reporters hounding you.’
‘They got bored after a while,’ you tell him.
‘I’m glad you’re all right,’ Yoongi says.
Over dinner he tells you about how the retrial resulted in all charges against him being overturned, how he’s been back home resting.
‘Been to the beach yet?’ you ask.
Yoongi looks at you over his wine glass. ‘You inviting me? You’re the one with a beach hut.’
‘We can go,’ you say. ‘I’ve been informally suspended from my job.’
This is news to him.
‘Is it to do with me?’ he asks quietly.
You shrug. ‘I’m hoping it’ll die down, especially since everyone knows you’re an innocent man now.’
‘I’m sorry,’ he says.
‘Don’t worry about it,’ you tell him.
He frowns a little, but lets the subject slide.
After dinner he walks you to your car.
‘Can I take you out again?’ he asks.
‘I’d like that,’ you tell him.
He leans close, brushes a kiss against your cheek that sends a thrill all the way to your toes.
‘I live about a half hour drive from here,’ you tell him, when he pulls away.
‘Maybe I can drive us this time,’ he says.
***
Yoongi slips his hand into yours as he walks up the front driveway to your house with you. You look over at him in surprise.
‘What?’ he teases. ‘Don’t you want to hold my hand?’
You stick your key in the lock, push open your front door.
‘Baby, I want to hold more than that,’ you tell him.
Yoongi’s eyes darken, and he lets you push him against the door.
He’s already leaning down, lips seeking yours. He kisses you hungrily, his large hand slipping behind your neck to deepen the kiss, tongue slipping into your mouth.
‘I’ve fucking missed you,’ he murmurs. ‘Shit, I’m so hard it’s embarrassing.’
‘Been deprived, huh?’ you tease, breathlessly.
‘Nah. Just you.’
He kisses a fiery path down your neck, into the hollow between your collarbones.
His hands slide down into the small of your back, cup your ass to pull you against him.
You can feel the ridge of his cock against your belly, and you roll your hips, trying to get closer.
‘Pull these down,’ Yoongi says, thumb looped in the band of your lacy panties.
They’re stuck to you, the wetness between your legs trails a path down your bare thighs that Yoongi’s only too happy to lick off.
‘I wanted to wait,’ he tells you, lifting the skirt of your dress, unzipping his trousers.
‘Wait next time,’ you tell him. ‘Want you now.’
‘You’ve got me,’ he tells you.
There’s the rustle of foil, the snick of elastic, then Yoongi’s parting your legs, sliding inside you with a groan deep in his chest.
Just like before, he fills you perfectly.
Yoongi kisses you again, slow though you can feel his heart thudding wildly in his chest.
‘Feels so good, every time,’ he tells you.
He starts to move then, doesn’t stop when you part your thighs to take him deeper, doesn’t stop when you cross your ankles behind his back and cry his name, doesn’t stop until you’re panting, sticky with your release, clutching him tight.
It’s only then that his thrusts start to become erratic, speeding up then slowing as he reaches his peak. He comes with a shout of your name, buried deep inside you, hips still moving like he, too, can’t get enough.
***
When you wake in the morning, it’s with Yoongi’s finger tracing a lazy path down your spine, his fingertip warm on your bare skin.
‘More, Yoongi?’ you ask, sleepy.
He presses a kiss to your forehead, you can hear the rumble in his chest as he suppresses a laugh.
‘Tapping out on me so soon, my love?’ he asks.
After the first time when you hadn’t made it to your bed, you’d fucked three more times before you’d finally collapsed in a tangled heap.
You’d woken once, to see him flat on his back, looking out the window, fingers intertwined with yours.
‘Can’t sleep?’ you’d asked.
He’d turned to you, pressed a kiss to your forehead. ‘Just thinking how lucky I am. I’d thought being wrongly imprisoned was the worst thing that had happened to me. And here I am.’
‘Here you are, you lucky sonofabitch,’ you’d laughed, squealing as he’d pinned your hands to the bed and half-heartedly climbed on top of you again.
‘I am lucky,’ he’d said, his free hand sliding under your ass, squeezing. You’d have fucked him again if he’d wanted, despite the soreness between your legs, but he’d wrapped you in his arms instead. ‘Sleep, baby.’
So you had.
Now your phone rings, distracting you from Yoongi’s wandering hands, just about.
‘Shit, it’s Mr Lee,’ you say, sitting up straight.
Yoongi cocks a brow at you as you take the call.
‘Y/N, I wanted to let you know that the school board have voted to have you back taking your regular classes,  at your earliest convenience. If you’ll have us.’
You frown. ‘I hadn’t realised there was a vote?’
‘An emergency meeting was convened last night,’ Mr Lee says. ‘You don’t have to let me know now, but we’d love to have you back.’
You hang up, thoroughly confused.
‘I guess I’m not informally suspended any more,’ you tell Yoongi.
‘For a new gym with a fully functional basketball court, and a grant for gym equipment, they’d better be giving you a raise too,’ drawls Yoongi.
‘You did this?’
‘What? You thought I was some deadbeat who held you at gunpoint and wasn’t going to repay everything you did for me?’
‘I never thought you were a deadbeat,’ you say.
‘I know,’ Yoongi agrees. ‘You’re an idiot.’
You swat at him, outraged.
‘You’re my idiot,’ Yoongi says, deflecting your blows easily. ‘And I’m going to make sure no one takes advantage of you ever again.’
He hesitates. ‘If — if you’ll have me.’
You pretend to think about it. ‘Well, you’re not perfect,’ you say, ‘but I guess you’ll do.’

Un-Breaking Up
Tumblr media
Request: i’m not sure if your request are still open honestly it’s my first time requesting ever. do you think you could do one of 10, and 13 with changbin, they were exes and something happened either one could say 10 and then they get stuck together, idk this was a big brain fart
Prompt:
10) “Was it worth it?”
13) Oh no! There's only one bed!
Pairing: Stray Kids Changbin x Reader
Genre: Angst (with a happy ending)
Song rec as you read: Top or Cliff - KIM SEJEONG
.
"What do you mean there's only one room left?" you hissed into your cell phone.
"They overbooked for the weekend," Chan sighed on the other end of the line. "We reserved the rooms when you and Bin were still together."
"And I told you I would pay the extra to get my own room," you groaned. This could not be happening.
When you had agreed to go on this friend-cation, you had been blissfully wrapped in the throes of love.
Now, you were stranded at the airport with a headache and an ex-boyfriend hailing a cab.
"It would have been nice for you to tell me he was on the same flight by the way," you scoffed.
"You literally booked the flights together-"
"You said he was going to change them to come in earlier! With you!"
"I thought he was!" Chan gasped. "Look, if you can't suck it up and be an adult for five minutes-"
"It's a twenty-minute drive," you pouted.
"And rooms are already sorted, so you guys are just going to have to figure it out," he sighed. You could almost hear him, miles away, shaking his head in disappointment.
"Can't he like...stay on your pull-out couch?" you hedged. "I'm sure your partner won't-"
"Oh, they will very much mind," Chan chuckled. "Plus, Changbin paid his portion just like everyone else. He's not getting downgraded to my loveseat."
"He's small enough to fit damn near anywhere," you muttered.
"Y/N," Chan said slowly, careful to keep his annoyance reigned in. "We'll see you soon, okay?"
"Just say you hate me," you complained. You knew you were being dramatic, but you were in too deep to turn back now. It really wasn't your intention to be a brat, but you and Changbin hadn't seen each other in weeks. Your friends had inadvertently become children of divorce, so you knew Chan didn't deserve the grief you were giving him.
"If by hate you mean love," he said cheerfully. "Now get your butt here. I'll see you in the morning."
Rolling your eyes, you hung up the call and shoved your phone in your pocket. Turning on your heel, you marched over to where Changbin was shoving suitcases into the back of a taxi.
"Everything okay?" he huffed, pushing the very last of the luggage into the trunk. "What did Chan say?"
"That you've been invited to sleep on his pullout couch," you smiled brightly.
"Y/N."
"They couldn't get us separate rooms," you muttered, crossing your arms. "And we have to make do."
Changbin's eyebrows shot up. "I'll pay the difference."
"Tried that," you sighed. "They literally have no more room."
"They always have more room," Changbin grumbled, yanking his phone out of his pocket. "Even if it's an executive suite."
"By all means," you hummed, sliding into the back of the waiting car. "If you think you can do something literally no one else could, go ahead."
Choosing not to acknowledge your comment, Changbin joined you in the backseat. Careful to keep a sufficient space barrier between the two of you, he informed the driver of your destination before getting on the phone with what you assumed to be the hotel concierge.
No matter how charming he could be, the fifteen minutes he spent on the phone yielded no results. As he hung up, you could see how ruffled he was. Leaning his head against the window of the taxi, he slowly exhaled.
"Let me guess?" you remarked. "No matter how much money you threw at the problem, it didn't work?"
Taking a deep breath, he swiveled toward you. "I was just trying to help-"
"No one asked," you said sharply. "I tried to fix the problem and couldn't. So did Chan. I don't know why you thought you could come in and save the day-"
"You used to like it when I saved the day," he bristled.
You knew you weren't being fair and simply picking at him just for the sake of picking. "I used to like you in general, but here we are."
Changbin closed his eyes and leaned back into the seat. Luckily, the hotel was already coming into sight. Unluckily, you would still be stuck together for the next few days.
.
"Shit," Changbin said, stepping into the hotel room.
Yanking your suitcase over the lip of the door, you made your way into the room, stopping just behind him. "What-"
The words were erased from your tongue as you took in your surroundings. The room was gorgeous, and admittedly, pretty romantic. You were greeted by a small seating area and a low table decorated with rose petals and snacks. Looking further into the room, you could see you had your own private pool outside, intimate and moody with low lighting. The thing you had avoided recognizing though was perhaps the most obvious.
There was only one bed.
"Perfect," you croaked, completely exhausted by this whole situation. "Absolutely perfect."
"I could try to-"
"My guess is," you said slowly. "That they are so fully booked, that they won't be able to move us to a room with two queens."
"But you don't know that for sure," he said with a small nod, trying to convince himself. "I'll go to the front desk."
"Knock yourself out," you sighed, leaning against the wall to begin sliding slowly down it. It was time to accept defeat. "Better yet actually knock yourself out."
Changbin shot you a dirty look as he yanked the door open and disappeared from sight.
Too bad he was back within ten minutes.
"Let me guess," you smirked. "They are fully booked and won't be able to move us to a room with two queens?"
"You don't have to gloat," he pouted, plopping on the edge of the bed. Looking helplessly around the room, his focus landed on the two armchairs in the seating area (very much not a normal, pull-out couch.) "I can just make a pallet on the floor."
You felt a small pang in your chest. As much as you didn't want to admit you had any threads of care left for the man in front of you, you did. And unfortunately, you didn't want to condemn him to sleeping on the floor. "That wouldn't be fair to you."
"It is what it is," he sighed. "And I'm not going to subject you to laying in a bed with me when you don't even want us to be in the same room."
"Stop being dramatic," you scoffed, totally projecting. "We can make a pillow barrier. Plus, I really don't want to hear you complain and make me into the bad guy."
"Y/N," he groaned. "It's not like that."
You chewed on your lip, knowing it wasn't. Changbin had honestly been much more charitable than you had even tried being since the two of you had broken up. You had pinned most of the reasons for separating on him, so maybe he had taken it to heart.
Choosing to ignore his protests, you began to unpack instead. Leaving the top two drawers in the dresser open for him (a habit from when you were dating) you silently moved your clothing and essentials to various parts of the room.
"Do you mind if I shower first?" he asked. His tone was careful, as if he was waiting for you to explode.
You hated it.
"Go for it," you answered.
He moved quietly toward the bathroom, leaving you with only your thoughts as you heard the click of the lock.
Moving toward the bed, you shoved your face into a pillow to let loose a mix between a groan and scream. Sometimes it just helped to make nonsensical sounds when you were feeling frustrated.
It was difficult being around Changbin again. Even though the two of you had broken up, there were feelings there. You had been so desperately in love with him at one point, you just assumed you would be a little bit in love forever. You thought the two of you had been bulletproof, but in one evening of anger, you managed to break both your heart and his (and still clung to the rationalization that it was all his fault).
You knew who he was when you had started dating. Seo Changbin, member of Stray Kids, producer in 3racha, gym rat, and lastly, boyfriend. All of those things came first, and you were so, so tired of being the last checkbox on the list. After being cancelled on for maybe the hundredth time because there was some sort of work emergency, you had had enough. His things were waiting in boxes when he had eventually shown up, and you had endless reasons for why you didn't want to continue forward.
When he begged, you had shut him down. Looking back now, you knew it was because you were afraid. It was easier to have a hard break than admit that you were both flawed people who weren't trying hard enough. It was easier than actually making the effort and being uncomfortable. You werent't ready for that advanced level of vulnerability.
Changbin was one of the softest and squishiest individuals you had ever met, which made it even harder. Any form of neglect he had stumbled into subjecting you to had never came with a hard edge. When he apologized, he was genuinely sorry. He was too good and pure to have to deal with you being upset over something he loved. He dreamt of being an idol before he even knew you existed. It would be the best for both of you if you just stopped interfering in his success.
Maybe the thing that hurt you the most though was seeing how it seemingly didn't affect him. He continued forward like nothing had happened, even treating you as a friend whenever you happened to run in the same circles. That was when you decided you couldn't like him, even if you loved him. It was easier to be annoyed than show how hurt it made you.
It was sick to say that you had wanted him to be just as miserable and lost as you were.
As you heard the water cut off, you pushed your face away from the pillow and took a deep breath. It was just a quick trip. You could be cordial for the sake of your friends.
You heard him before you saw him. With the phone glued to his ear, he was chuckling at someone on the other line. It was difficult not to ogle at the water droplets still decorating his shoulders and collar bone, even though he was technically fully dressed in a tank top and shorts.
"We need to redo the guide," he instructed. "I might be able to break away for a little bit and record something.
Yes, I know I'm on vacation, but we're already behind."
After a few more minutes of arguing, he hung up, and tossed his phone onto the bed.
You couldn't help yourself. "Was it worth it?"
"Hm?" he asked. You knew he had to pull himself out of his own thoughts before he could address yours.
"Was it worth it?" you repeated, crossing your arms.
"The shower?" he asked, lifting his brows and smiling his patented one-sided smirk. "Absolutely."
"No," you croaked. "Working. On vacations, in what's supposed to be your free time. Was it all worth it?"
He plopped on the edge of the bed, keeping his back to you. "We're talking past - past tense here...aren't we? Not the call I was just on."
Your silence was answer enough.
"I like to think it was," he said quietly, tilting his head to the side as he made a hissing noise to reprimand himself. "But as days go by, the more and more I wonder if I was wrong."
You chewed on your lip, not at all knowing what answer you had expected, but that wasn't it.
Looking over his shoulder, he slowly pivoted his body to face yours. His expression softened as he said quietly, "Is that why you hate me?"
Your jaw dropped open as you floundered for one of your knee-jerk, cutting responses. His face conveyed such helplessness.
"...I don't hate you, Changbin," you said quietly. Surely, he had to know that.
"I don't think I would blame you if you did," he chuckled sadly. "I put just about everything before you, didn't I?"
"It wasn't a matter of putting things before me," you said slowly. "It was a matter of putting things before us. We were supposed to be a team."
The old adage that time heals all wounds was at least proving itself to be slightly true. It was definitely easier to speak on how you were feeling now that you had put some space between yourself and the initial confrontation.
Changbin nodded slowly. "I wanted to be better."
You tried to take the ice out of your tone. "I did too."
"Then why didn't we try?" he asked, looking toward you with watery eyes.
You tried to focus on your breathing. If Changbin cried, you were absolutely going to cry.
"I thought...I thought that I had done so badly as a boyfriend," he continued. "And that's why you treated me like I was an inconvenience once we broke up."
"You were an inconvenience," you grumbled. "Only because I was still so upset...and you were acting like everything was okay between us."
"I don't know how to act otherwise!" he contended. "We broke up and I still loved you. Treating you any other way would have hurt my heart, and I'm too selfish to do that on top of what was already done."
"Huh," you hiccupped, feeling the tears come despite your best efforts. "I really goofed, didn't I?"
"What do you mean?" he asked, furrowing his brows.
"I was the one who did the breaking up, Bin," you said quietly. "I tried to tell myself I shouldn't feel bad because it was your fault. You were the one who was always gone, but I didn't try to talk to you about it. I let it become this completely...other thing inside of me. It was like every time you cancelled, I added it to this stack until it finally tumbled over."
"But I should have realized on my own," he asserted, standing up to move closer to you. Dropping to his knees in front of you, he gathered your hands in his. Looking up through his lashes, you could see the toll the last few months had taken on him.
You were foolish to think he wasn't suffering in the same way you were.
"We can blame ourselves all day," you sniffed, finally letting the tears run over your cheeks. "But it doesn't change the fact that we broke up...and now we're here."
"So we un-break up," he mused, saying it as if it was the simplest thing in the world.
"Un-break up?" you muttered.
"Mhm," he hummed, easing up from his knees to sit beside you. Wrapping an arm around your shoulders, he tucked you into his side.
"It's not that easy," you hiccupped, shaking your head but making no attempt to untangle your body from his.
"Who says it can't be?"
"We're different people now, Bin," you maintained. "Do we even know if we can be that safe space for each other? It ended so poorly last time, and-"
"Because we let it!" he argued. "But we know now-"
"Do we?" you interrupted. "We don't actually know how to fix what happened. We walked away."
"And here we are, walking back," he chuckled, shaking his head. "We can try, really try...if you think it's worth it."
You chewed on your lip, looking toward him. His eyes were still a little puffy from his brief crying episode, but it was definitely the same Bin you had fallen in love with months ago. His dark hair was beginning to dry in its signature messy curls, and his even darker eyes watched you carefully. There was a fire there that had been extinguished for so long, seeing it again caused your heart to skip a beat. Now that you had opened the door, he would push as hard as possible to make his way back in.
"Y/N?"
"I may not be worth it," you laughed grimly. "But I know you are."
"I didn't know we were throwing a pity party," he teased. "I should have bought streamers."
"I take it back," you grumbled. "You aren't worth it."
Changbin's grin was wide as he wrapped his other arm around you and squeezed you tightly. "Of course, you're worth it, silly."
"So we're doing this," you whispered into his bare shoulder. The smell of his shower gel was still heavy on his skin, encouraging you to inhale deeply. For the first time in weeks, you felt at home.
"Hell yeah we are," he chimed. "We're going to do the shit out of this."
You laughed as you pulled away from him. You wanted to look into his eyes. He needed to understand.
"Starting now, we both promise to do better," you nodded slowly. He nodded along, eyes wide. "Which means, do you really have to work while you're here?"
He smirked, letting out a small chuckle. "Starting now, I am going to be so present in this relationship, you're going to get sick of me. You'll be begging for me to go to the studio."
"Somehow I doubt that," you sighed, lifting a hand to cradle his jaw. He tilted his face, nuzzling your palm before dropping a soft kiss there. "But I'm excited to see you try."

You had your hands shoved in your pockets as you made your way to the dock. Mabel didn’t live far from the docks, well not far by car, on foot though, it was a decent walk. A part of you wished Mabel could have given you a ride, it wound have been quicker and you would have gotten to spend more time with her. Having Mabel drive you though wasn’t worth the risk, you didn’t know how much they knew about her but the less they knew the better, if they saw you getting out of her car they could drag her onto the boat with you, intending to use her as leverage.
You jumped when tires screeched next to you. You whipped around ready to fight when you saw the black SUV with its dark tinted windows. You didn’t have time to do anything else before the passenger door opened and a large man jumped out and quickly threw you into the back seat. You pressed yourself against the nice leather seat, your eyes darting around the car.
The guy who had tossed you into the vehicle was the same one who had nabbed Charlie, the one driving was another man you recognized working for your boss, and then in the seat next to yours was your boss. The boss had this chin resting on his fist, looking out the window, looking as if he was contemplating life. He didn’t even so much as turn towards you, you didn’t dare speak, they needed you to get the drugs but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t do something to you before you even got to the boat.
“I needed to make sure you’d actually show up,” your boss said, still not looking at you. “Hope you enjoyed your goodbye.” He turned, looking you dead in the eyes, you saw no remorse staring back at you, you knew your goodbye was really your last goodbye.
You sat silently in the car, only moving when the car hit a pothole. When the car finally pulled up to the docks it was still dark, the sun had just barely begun to peek its head above the horizon. At least you’d get to see a nice sunrise before you died, you silently thanked Apollo or whoever was pulling the chariot that day.
The driver got out, opening the door for the boss to effortlessly slide out. The guy in the passenger seat got out at the same time, opening your door before dragging you out of the car, making sure to flash you his gun, letting you know what would happen if you tried to run. You wanted to roll your eyes, if you wanted to run you never would have been making your way to the docks. You watched as the driver opened the trunk and the boss grabbed a large black duffel bag out of the back, cash, a lot of cash. You furrowed your brow; you didn’t know what the boss needed so much money for. The duffle you gave the doctor to cover Mabel’s debt had tens of thousands of dollars in it but even it wasn’t stuffed as full as the one your boss was carrying around.
The guy guarding you aggressively pushed you to follow the boss and driver. Your boss led the way, the driver behind him, you behind the driver, then the lackey guarding you behind you. Despite the boss clearly not being afraid of you, his men were doing everything they could to keep you away from him while his back was turned. You followed along silently, occasionally feeling a hard shove to your shoulder as you all made your way down the ramp to the boats. You looked at the boats as you passed, wondering which one you’d be getting on. They blew up your crew's boat when they killed them, you weren’t sure how quickly they came up with another boat.
The boss came to a stop, raising his arms with a wide smile on his face. “She’s beautiful!” He yelled.
You looked around him, seeing a large fishing vessel. It was definitely much bigger than your crew's boat but wasn’t as nice, they didn’t have all the shiny new toys yours did, not that it helped much with the heavy load of drugs, your boat still nearly tipped. A man on the deck grumbled something you couldn’t hear before waving all of you up, you assumed he was the captain.
“We should have gone into business together a long time ago my friend,” your boss said, smiling widely at the captain.
“Where’s the money?” Is the only thing the captain asked.
Your bosses laughed; he flung the duffle bag down at the man’s feet. The captain huffed as he kneeled down, unzipping the bag. Your eyes widened at the amount of money, looked to be hundreds of stacks of twenties. Twenties were a small enough bill to not get flagged like hundreds or fifties but a big enough bill that they didn’t take up as much space like ones, fives, or tens.
“There you are my friend,” your boss said. “One million dollars.” The captain smirked before reaching down to grab the duffel bag. Your boss was quick to click his tongue, the driver, stepping up behind the boss and putting his hand on the gun that rested in his waistband. “Not until we’re at the coordinates.”
The captain huffed glaring at the boss who remained unflinching. When the captain finally glanced at the driver he backed down, not before his eyes went to the gun, the driver had no problem pulling if needed.
“Are we ready?” The captain asked.
“Just waiting on a few more,” your boss said, smiling. He zipped up the duffel bag before hoisting it up and tossing it at the driver who slung it over his shoulder.
Not even a moment later you could see two more SUVs pull up, five men piling out of each of them. Even from the boat you could see all the men were strapped with some sort of gun from a handgun to automatic rifles. You clenched your hands into fist, hoping that would hide the shaking.
“Now we’re ready,” your boss said, smiling at the captain.
The captain looked around nervously at all the armed men who had now boarded his boat. He nodded, fidgeting with the baseball cap on his head before turning and going to the wheel. One of the armed men followed him, probably to make sure he didn’t try to backstab anyone and radio the coast guard or something when you got far enough out to sea.
You remained on the deck with your boss and the rest of the armed men. You caught site of your boss staring at you out of the corner of your eye, but you refused to look at him. You kept your eyes locked on the floor, only shifting when the boat went over a larger wave. You were used to the sea, the way a boat swayed, and the waves crashed around it, you gave a ghost of a smile as you caught a few of the men stumbling and struggling to stay up right.
You glanced around the boat, it seemed to be a standard fishing boat. There were a couple barrels, crates, and nets, all things you were used to using when bringing in a catch. There were some ropes in one corner of the boat, along with extra cannisters of gas. The boat had definitely seen years of love, it was quite large, you wondered how big of a crew the captain usually had working on it.
You finally looked up when you felt the boat start to slow down. You looked around seeing nothing but ocean on all sides. “This is it!” the captain called down, dropping the anchor.
“It better be,” the boss mumbled, flicking a glance at you. You held his gaze until he turned around to give his men orders.
You walked to the edge of the boat, aware of your guards' eyes on you, just waiting for you to make a wrong move. You glanced over the side and stared down into the dark depths of the ocean, from the top it seemed like an endless abyss that would suck you in and never let you go. There were no landmarks, it was the middle of the ocean after all but assuming the captain followed your coordinates correctly then you were in the spot you nearly died. About a week ago you were standing on a different boat, with a different crew, under different circumstances, in the exact same spot. You survived death once; you didn’t think you’d be so lucky a second time.
“Suit up,” your boss ordered. Your head snapped to him, looking on as a few of the men he brought with him stripped down and began putting on wet suits.
You stood quietly by as a handful of men went into the ocean, all of them in scuba gear, and one of them holding straps to latch onto the pallet of drugs that they’ll be able to connect to the hook that will raise the drugs. You waited up top as the men swam down to the dark depths, until they’d eventually touch the ocean floor. You waited, unable to stop yourself from eyeing the radio in the boss’s hand.
As the last man flipped back into the water the captain came down to the deck. “Alright, can I have my money now?” He said impatiently. It wasn’t like he could go anywhere but the man was working with drug dealers so it wasn’t like you could blame him.
Your boss rolled his eyes before turning to face the captain. “Of course,” he said with a smile. He nodded at his bodyguard who tossed the bag of money at the captain’s feet.
The captain instinctively bent down to reach for the money again before freezing and looking up at your boss who gave him an annoyed nod. The captain smiled as he bent down the rest of the way, opening the bag even wider to get a better view of all the money. He pulled out a stack of cash, flipping through it as the smile on his face only got bigger. He dropped the stack back into the bag before zipping it back up.
“The wonders this money will do for me,” the captain mumbled more to himself than anyone. The captain went to the side of the boat, resting his hands on the edge as he stared out across the sea. The sun was just beginning to rise, and you had to admit it truly was a beautiful sight.
You caught the movement out of the corner of your eye before you could register what was happening. Your boss quietly moved so he was standing right behind the captain, he pulled out the gun strapped to his waist, pointed it at the back of the captain’s head and pulled the trigger. You jumped back at the blast, your eyes wide open as the bodyguard helped the captain’s body the rest of the way into the ocean, tossing him over the side as if he were just more trash.
“Pleasure doing business with you,” your boss said, shrugging as he walked over to his bag of money. “Put this somewhere safe,” he gestured at the bag, nodding at his bodyguard.
When he turned to face you, you could see little flecks of blood from the splatter on his cheek. It felt like your heart was going to beat out of your chest as he made his way over to you. Your entire body went rigid when he swung an arm around your neck, the barrel of his gun tapping your chest whenever he moved.
“You know how to work that, right?” your boss whispered in your ear, pointing his gun in the direction of the machine that lifts the net with the catch. He phrased it like a question, but you knew it wasn’t. You could only nod your head. “Good,” he tapped his gun against your chest again before abruptly releasing you.
You let out a shaky breath, watching as he walked over to his bodyguard. The bag of money was sitting off to the side, never too far out of reach of one of the boss’s men. Four men went down to retrieve the drugs, leaving the remaining six up on the deck. While the bodyguard never left the boss’s side the other six men walked around the deck or through the cabins of the boat, all their eyes watching for anything amiss.
You weren’t sure how long you waited on the deck, you didn’t move from your spot, your gaze remained on the ocean, watching as the waves lightly crashed against the boat, making it sway back and forth. The water was still bloody from when the captain went into the ocean, but there was no sign of the body. The only reason you were aware of time passing was because it was officially light out. The sun wasn’t high in the sky, it was still pretty early in the morning, what was probably normal hours for the average person waking up and going to work. The ocean truly looked beautiful any time of day, reflecting the moonlight or the sun glistening off the top of it, forever unable to reach down to the dark depths of the bottom.
You jumped when you heard the radio in your boss’s hand crackle. “Go again?” your boss said, clicking the button as he raised the radio to his mouth.
The radio crackled again. “We…” one of the diver’s voices came, through all the static. “Found… it…”
The boss glanced at you, clicking his tongue as he nodded to himself. “Load it up.” He continued to hold the radio close to his mouth, so he was ready when they gave him word that the load was secure. “Guess you weren’t lying,” he directed at you.
“Load… is… strapped… down…” crackled through the radio.
“Come on up.” He strapped the radio to his belt and nodded at you to go to the machine.
You quickly did as asked, your eyes widened as you stared down at the control panel. Lifting the load was never your job, you had done it a few times, but you definitely weren’t the best person for it. Luck seemed to be on your side for a bit longer because the control panel was relatively simple to work, it had the lever to lift the haul, the lever to direct the crane, and the button to drop the hook.
You waited at the control panel until you saw the four divers’ surface, then you carefully maneuvered the crane over the water and dropped the hook into the ocean. One of the divers swam to the hook to grab it and swim it back down to drugs so he could secure it in place while the other divers climbed back aboard the boat. You watched as the cord connected to the hook continued to move the deeper the diver brought it, a part of you wished it was too deep for the hook to reach.
“Load… is… locked… and…” a voice crackled through the radio at your boss’s side. “Secure…”
The boss looked at you, giving you a nod. Your hand didn’t stop shaking until it was resting on the cool handle of the lever. You slowly began pulling the lever down, the machine whirred as the cord tightened and began to retract. You kept your eyes on the surface until finally the tip of the pallet broke through the waves. A loud noise made you flinch; you glanced to the side to see Your boss had barked out a laugh, he was smiling wide as the pallet got further out of the water. Within minutes the pallet was fully raised and hanging off the hook in the middle of the air was millions of dollars’ worth of drugs.
“Good, good,” the boss said, coming up and slapping you on the back, hitting your injured shoulder. “Now, keep it steady,” he whispered in your ear. “We have business to attend to.” You could feel his eyes burning a hole in the side of your face, but you refused to look at him as you hit the button, making sure the pallet would stay in the air.
Your boss kept his arm around your neck as he directed you away from the control panel. He walked you to the edge of the boat before finally releasing you. You stared out across the ocean, out of the all the things you could see before your life ended, you had to admit there was nothing like the sea, it felt fitting.
“Walk forward,” your boss ordered. You hesitantly lifted your foot and began inching your way to the side of the boat. With each step you knew you got closer to your death. “Stop.” You instantly came to a stop.
You couldn’t help the tears that filled your eyes as you stared off across the water. Soon you’d be one with the sea, your body lost forever to the dark abyss, your soul forever bound to the ocean floor. You reached up, your finger brushing over the trident necklace that still rested under your shirt. Maybe you had redeemed yourself enough for Poseidon to have mercy on you, you wouldn’t make it to Elysium but maybe he would consider reincarnating you as a tiger shark. You closed your eyes when you heard the click of the revolver pointed at the back of your head.
A loud nose broke through the wind, making you jump, your eyes snapped open. Your eyes darted around seeing the boat and the ocean, you hadn’t died yet, then the noise happened again. The noise hadn’t been the firing of the gun, it was a horn from a boat. You looked around, seeing a boat coming up on you in the distance. You couldn’t help but smile when you saw Finestkind across the front of it.
You spun around, knocking your boss’s arm out of the way causing him to fire the shot meant for your brain into the side of the boat. Before he could recover and aim the gun at you again, you flung yourself over the side of the boat and into the water. You held your breath, opting to stay underwater. You didn’t know what was happening above, but you saw dark outlines of a handful of people looking over the side of the boat. You quickly pushed back, swimming under the boat as bullets rained down where you had just been. You peeked your head out from under the boat seeing the shadows of the men looking over the boat, trying to catch a glimpse of you or your body. You went further under the boat when you saw the shadow of the Finestkind getting closer.
You popped out on the other side of the boat, making sure to stay near to keep yourself hidden. You could hear the boss shouting orders, his men screaming, and more gun fire. You couldn’t see them, but you heard another boat engine and felt the waves as it most likely passed by, you could only assume it was the Finestkind. Suddenly something grabbed your ankle, you had just enough time to take a big breath of air before it was yanking you down to the dark depths of the ocean. You could only watch as the light above slowly began to face. You tried kicking at whatever attacked you, all you knew was that it didn’t feel like teeth. When you whipped around you saw the light from a diving mask illuminating a diver’s face, the diver who had gone back down to secure the drugs.
He grabbed you by the waist, yanking you deeper as you struggled against him. You hit and punched at his chest before finally getting your hands around his mask and ripping it to the side. While he struggled to readjust his mask, you reached for the knife strapped to the side of his leg, then kicked him in the chest, sending him floating further away. You began swimming to the surface again, just as you were about to break through you were yanked back down again.
This time you quickly spun around, not hesitating as you swung the knife around, stabbing him in the neck. You ripped the knife out, your eyes widening as he brough a hand to his neck, but his blood still seeped out between his fingers, tainting the surrounding water. He reached out for you with his other hand which you easily dodged. You used one hand to push him away, watching as he slowly sunk down into the darkness, the light from his mask slowly disappearing.
When your head burst through the water you couldn’t help but take several deep breaths. You spun around, trying to regain focus, the shooting being what brought you back. You swam to the boat, then swam around to where you could pull yourself up onto it. You stayed crouched down, seeing your boss and his men shooting at something, when you peeked your head a little higher you could see the Finestkind circling around, dodging most of the bullets, you couldn’t see who was driving the boat or anyone else thankfully.
When one of the men got close to your position you popped up, slicing his throat before he had the chance to see you. You liberated him of his gun before he fell into the ocean. His body must have made a loud splash because one of the other guys turned around before you had a chance to duck and hide again. Your eyes widened at seeing his gun facing you, you lifted the one you had just taken and fire, nearly losing control of the automatic weapon but managing to hit the guy.
You ducked down again when two more men turned to face you, instantly firing. You covered your head as bullets flew above your head, piercing the wood you were hiding behind. You heard firing from two more weapons, different weapons than the boss and his men were using. There was a thud and another thud and the bullets sailing past your head suddenly stopped. You peaked around the corner only to see the two men that had been firing at you lying dead on the deck.
You slid to the other side to peek around the other corner, seeing your boss and his men hunkered down. Lifting your head a little higher you caught sight of Charlie and Costa crouched down and running across their boat. Before you ducked back in cover you saw one of the men raising his gun, aiming it at Charlie’s head that was just barely poking out. You raised your gun and fired, filling the man’s back with bullet holes. The guy he was next to reacted, sitting up taller as he aimed his gun at your position but was instantly met with a bullet to the head by Costa.
There was nothing for a moment, just the sound of the waves rocking the boats back and forth until you heard someone grunt. You peeked around your corner again to see the Finestkind had drifted closer and two of your boss’s men were able to jump aboard and were now fighting Charlie and Costa. You swung the strap of your gun around your shoulder before running and tackling a third guy before he could jump aboard the Finestkind.
You got a few punches in before the guy shoved you off himself. The two of you stood face to face circling each other, waiting for the other to make a move. The man got impatient and charged you, but you dodged out of the way, using your knife to slice him across the ribs as he passed you.
He did the same thing, running at you full force, his arms wide to tackle you. You ducked under his arms, grabbing one of his arms, twisting it behind his back with one hand while the other brought the knife to his throat. You held him pressed against you as you pressed the knife further into his skin, surely drawing blood. You turned around, keeping his body in front of you. You kept your head hidden behind his as you stared straight into the eyes of the guy who had kidnapped Charlie and forced you into the SUV.
The guy smirked before raising his gun and fired bullet after bullet into his own man. You kept the guy’s body upright as you pressed forward using him as a human shield. When you were close enough you pushed his body at the man who had been guarding you. While he was distracted you grabbed his hand, hitting it against the latter, trying to get him to drop his gun.
Distracted in trying to get him to drop his gun you didn’t realize he had pushed the others guy’s body out of the way, giving him full access to grab you by the back of the hair and slam your head into the railing of the ladder. You collapsed to the ground, reaching up for the ladder to try and regain your footing. When you looked up, through your spotted vision you saw the guard pointing his gun at your head.
Behind him you saw Tommy coming out, shooting one of the men that had been attacking Charlie. You couldn’t help but smile despite your predicament, the blood from your nose dripping down into your mouth.
“What the fuck are you smiling at?” the guard asked.
You could only chuckle as you saw Charlie flailing through the air as he landed on the guard. You scooted out of the way, only able to watch as Charlie and the guard struggled on the ground, taking turns punching each other. Charlie put both hands on the gun, trying to twist it out of his hands. There was a loud bang, your eyes widening as both men froze.
You released a breath when Charlie sat up, his shoulders relaxing. You couldn’t help but scoff at the guy who forced you into the SUV, the guy who was an enforcer for your boss, was now just a guy with a bullet in his chest. Charlie pulled himself to his feet and held out a hand to you, helping you to your feet as well. You both turned when you heard another bang, seeing Costa aiming his gun and the other man who had jumped aboard the Finestkind fall back into the ocean.
“Well, well, well,” you whipped around when you heard your boss’s voice. “Look what we have here.” Your boss was smirking but nodded his head to the side. You looked to see what he was nodding at, you and Charlie both froze at the sight of the bodyguard over on the Finestkind, a gun pressed into Mabel’s side and the rest of the crew on their knees with their hands behind their heads. “Get over there,” your boss ordered, nodding at Charlie.
“When you get the chance,” you whispered, barely moving your mouth so only Charlie would hear. “Run.” Charlie scrunched his eyebrows when he looked at you, his eyes widened with realization when you lifted up the back of his shirt and slipped the diving knife in his waistband. You held Charlie’s gaze for a second; you needed him to run as soon as he got the chance.
Your eyes went back to Mabel, seeing her forced to her knees next to Tommy. Thankfully she didn’t look hurt, you weren’t sure if you could keep your composure if they tried to hurt her. You couldn’t help but be grateful for her, she came with them, she came to rescue you, you couldn’t believe she actually came. Mabel had been free, free of this life, free of you, she was free of all the trouble and yet she still came to help you.
“Now!” your boss yelled again, waving his gun impatiently.
Charlie glared at your boss as he hopped back over to the Finestkind. The bodyguard made sure to have his gun on Charlie the entire time. When Charlie got close enough the bodyguard slammed the butt of the gun into Charlie’s ribs, making him double over as he got to his knees. “Hands up!” The bodyguard ordered, nudging Charlie in the back of the head with the barrel of his rifle. Charlie subtly glanced back at the man, giving him a glare.
“So much trouble and for what,” your boss said, walking up to you, “you?” He shook his head in disappointment. “You made this so much messier than it needed to be.” He glanced over at the Finestkind where the others were being held hostage. “You’re the girl that was with Mr. Hero here,” he gestured at Charlie. “The one my man let go?” He called out, looking at Mabel but she only acknowledged him with a glare. “I’m assuming she’s who you wanted to say goodbye to?” He looked back at you, chuckling. “Love,” he said wistfully. “It’ll only get you killed. Bring the girl here.”
Your eyes widened, you glanced at Charlie, he gave you a subtle nod, but you still held your breath as you waited to see how this would play out. As soon as the bodyguard walked up behind Mabel, shifting his gun to only one hand so he could grab Mabel by the wrist with his other, Charlie made his move. Charlie spun around, you didn’t even see him slide the knife out of his waistband, you just saw him move his arm, slashing the man’s heel.
The bodyguard screamed, instantly letting go of Mabel as he reached for his injury. Charlie knocked Mabel out of the way as he grabbed hold of the gun still in the bodyguard’s hand and pushed him back. As Charlie was fighting the bodyguard you rushed toward your boss when you saw him raising his own gun at Charlie, slamming into him, sending both of you to the ground.
You quickly pushed off him and ran to the side of the boat when you caught sight of the duffel bag. You snagged the duffel bag and put as much distance between you and the boss. You glanced at the Finestkind, seeing Charlie struggling with the bodyguard until finally he tossed the guy over the side of the boat.
“One wrong move and say goodbye to your money,” you said, when you saw your boss had recovered. He was wobbling on his feet, but he had made to raise his gun at the others again.
You kept the automatic weapon close to your side to help give you more support while you used your other hand to hold the duffle bag out over the side of the boat. You saw your boss’s finger twitch, but he didn’t raise his gun at you or the others. His eyes kept going from the bag to you, you could see him debating in his mind if you’d really follow through and toss his money into the ocean.
“Easy, easy,” your boss said. He smiled, trying to appear calm, acting as if he was still in control, but there was an edge to his voice. You held all the power now; you just couldn’t take your eyes off your boss.
“They’re going to leave now,” you said, surprising yourself with how calm you sounded. “Charlie!” you hoped he got the message; you couldn’t spare a glance back at them.
“What are you doing?” you heard Mabel call. “No! No!” you flexed your hand, gripping the gun just a bit tighter; Charlie was doing as you asked.
You finally released a breath when you heard the engine of the Finestkind start up. You felt the boat sway as the Finestkind began to pull away. Your eyes flicked down, looking at the ground behind your boss, there was the gas cannister, still rolling around. You didn’t have a plan when you first grabbed the bag of money, you just wanted to give Mabel and the others a chance to escape but now you knew what you had to do. Your breathing wasn’t as shaky as you imagined it would be, but you guessed that’s what happened when you looked death in the eye for the third time. You blocked out Mabel screaming your name and yelling at the others to turn the boat around.
You twisted your body, using your one hand on the gun to pull the trigger, shooting up the panel that controlled the crane that was holding the drugs. “No!” your boss screamed, running towards the panel as it sparked and whined before dropping the drugs back into the ocean, nearly tipping the boat in the process.
Your boss whipped around, his eyes looking like a rabid animal as he ran at you. You used the duffel bag to hit him in the chest, knocking him back to the floor. With him on the ground you tossed the duffel bag into the ocean. You stepped up onto one of the crates, placing one foot up onto the edge of the boat. You spared your boss one last glance, watching as he held a hand to his chest as he tried to catch his breath and find his balance again. You took a deep breath then raised your gun one last time and fired.
You jumped off the boat the second your finger pulled the trigger. You didn’t need to see the bullet hit the gas cannister. You hit the water and the force of the explosion pushed you deeper. You ignored the sting of saltwater, your eyes wide opened as you watched the sky light up, bits and pieces of the boat sinking down to the bottom of the ocean. You waited a few moments, hoping all the debris was done falling before swimming to the surface.
You took a deep breath when you finally broke through the waves. There was nothing left of the boat and certainly nothing left of your boss. You began to swim through the wreckage, avoiding burning pieces of wood floating in the water. Your arm brushed against something and when you looked to see what it was you couldn’t help but chuckle, seeing the duffle bag, maybe you still had a bit of luck left after all. You flung one arm over the duffle bag, using it to help keep yourself afloat.
“Y/N!” you heard Mabel shout. You whipped your head around, trying to figure out where her voice was coming from. “Y/N!” you broke out into a smile when you saw the Finestkind coming through the smoke, you never thought you’d be so happy to see that damn boat.
“Holy shit you’re alive,” Charlie said when the boat got close enough. You breathed out a laugh, which seemed to be becoming Charlie’s saying when it came to you.
You tossed the duffel bag onto the stern before taking Charlie’s hand, allowing him to pull your aboard. You collapsed onto the deck, breathing heavy as you looked up at the clear blue sky. “Thanks,” you breathed out.
Mabel collapsed to her knees next to you, resting her hand on your cheek as she turned your face to look at her. “Hey,” you said still breathless. “Thanks for saving me.”
“You’re an idiot,” she said, clearly holding back a sob. You nodded, unable to argue with her, you did do a lot of dumb things. “I hate you.”
“I know.”
She lifted your head off the deck, pulling you into a kiss. You leaned up, instantly kissing her back. Mabel’s tears streamed down her face, mixing with the saltwater you were soaked in, despite the salty taste it was the best kiss you ever had. Mabel pulled away, keeping her forehead resting against yours. “You paid my debt,” she whispered.
Now you were breathing heavily for another reason, your eyes never left her lips. “I owed you,” you admitted. Paying her debt that she only had because she was trying to save your life was the least you could do.
“I really hate you,” she sniffled. You couldn’t help but chuckle before she pulled you in for another kiss. She could hate you all she wanted if it meant spending the rest of your life like this.

As of Batman: The Brave and the Bold #12, local precious-gremlin-who-I-would-die-for, Maps Mizoguchi, is now officially(?) the sixth Robin. Or at the very least, she's now "in" on The Secret™.
If this isn’t a set up for her taking up the Robin mantle officially then I genuinely don’t know what is.
As one of the twelve Gotham Academy enjoyers in existence, I am having the extremely normal reaction of "FUCKING FINALLY! LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO--!"
Tumblr media
In all honesty, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't seen this coming from miles away. Like, Maps has appeared in a number of seemingly random cameo roles recently, including Batgirls (2021), and even technically as Robin in the backup issues of Batman (2016) #119-121, and in a short story in Batman Black & White. And most of those got collected in a standalone titled "Maps of Mystery", which specifically gathered all her appearances as Robin (and the Gotham Academy Belle Reve story).
And then, of course, her recent time-travelling Future-Trunks-esque appearance in Birds of Prey (2023), as the tech-based Meridian, from a potential future timeline where she apparently makes it as a superhero using gadgets she apparently designed, proving that she's hero material.
Tumblr media
That's not something you do for a character for no reason. That's the sort of thing you do when you want to keep a character in the conscience of your readers for whatever reason, because you have bigger plans for them.
Also interesting to consider that, in the "Mother's Day" story where this took place, Alfred is standing right there and not lying down six feet under wood, dirt and a stone slab, and that Bruce is in the old Batcave under the manor so he still has Money™. So we must assume this was some nebulous time in the past (after GA: Second Semester(?), but before City of Bane)... which I won't bother to analyse the exact timeframe of because DC doesn't care about the post-Flashpoint / New 52 / Rebirth / Prime Earth / idfk / Dawn of DC timeline, so neither should I.
But I think it's really funny that this presumably means Maps has known The Secret™ for a long time relative to present-day comics, but always acted like she didn't.
But if all her appearances are in chronological order, that means Bruce is only the fourth Bat whose identity she discovered.
Like, she discovered Cass' identity almost by accident on a trip to the zoo, Damian showed off his grapple gun and gave her an actual Batarang during the three hours he was enrolled in the school (as if she wouldn't immediately put two-and-two together even back then), and she even found out Terry fucking McGuinness would become Batman in a future via a time-travelling grandfather clock.
No I did not make that last part up. Read Gotham Academy istg.
Did Cass know that Maps had been acting as a Robin when she met her, both at the zoo in Batgirls and her future version in Birds of Prey?
Does Damian know the one (1) friend(?) he made in Gotham Academy is potentially in the running for his job?
Is Bruce himself aware that she knows as much about their identities as she currently does?
How is DC going to retcon this so it all makes sense in the barely-functioning canon of the modern DC universe?
I'm digressing. Where was I going with this?
Point is, she's destined to become a Robin, and I'm glad DC finally pulled their fingers out their asses and capitalised on that destiny.
Let's just hope it doesn't take another year for them to follow up on this plotline again.
Bonus: Jason Todd, after learning of Bruce taking yet another happy kid under his wing as yet another Robin, giving her some advice:

You know what i would like to see a goldfish reader cause i mean goldfish can be really tiny and can get fairly big, maybe reader is from a pet store and gets bought for a young rich yandere and gets absolutely pampered and gets huge, clifford the big red dog style
"Sorry, I can't make it this year."
"Mom won't drive me out that far....."
"Maybe next time?"
"Next year."
Next year... Next year.. They'll be forty by the time that rolls around. It's always the same. People stick around for the lavish parties and taste of the high life, but the second they want to downgrade for something small with close friends and family everyone's suddenly too busy to come see them. The presents have always been shit too. Flashy jewelry or clothing from brands they couldn't care less about. Whatever happened to giving kids toy trains and dolls? They're sick of it. Sick of everything. Why can't anything turn out right-
Auryn hurls their phone at the door, anger fleeting as it smashes into a million pieces. Mommy and daddy will just buy them a new one, and while it won't do a scratch they love the idea of burning a hole in their pockets. Wasting all the money they gave them instead of time. The door creaks open once the coast is clear and in peaks a frightened maid. Her eyes fall to her arms, soothing whatever she held with a soft hush. They return to her master, waiting for their answer.
"Come in."
The maid opens the door completely and steps inside. In her hands was a glass bowl. "From your parents."
Auryn drums their leg against the frame of their bed, wondering why their arms were still empty. "Well?"
The maid shoves the bowl into their chest as passive she could, prioritizing the creature within over her annoyance. They look into the glass. Floating at the bottom; staring right back at them, was a little goldfish. Poor thing had been startled awake by the loud thud and trying to squeeze its tail into the castle it had already outgrown. It still couldn't have been any bigger than their hand. Beyond its human features, there was nothing special about it. A fish.
A fucking fish. Out of all the things they could've sent. The maid could sense their rage flaring. "Please give it a chance. Your brother couldn't keep it, and he knew you'd be the next best owner."
Their nails scrap the glass. That only makes it worse. Their family dumping their trash on them was a new low. What were they going to do with this thing? They should put it out of its misery. Abandoned, weak, unable to feign for itself.... just like them.
Auryn looks at the goldfish again. They stick a finger in its tank, swishing it around as the guppy takes interest. It swims up to them and puts its mouth around the digit, nibbling at the skin. They smile a bit, pulling their finger away which in turn causes the fish to dart away. Their brows furrow in worry.
"... I'm..sorry for scaring you. You're just like me aren't you? Alone. Afraid. I'll take care of you. I promise. Why don't we start off by getting you a new tank?"
.
.
.
"Noooooo"
You shake in their arms as the divers attempt to fit their measuring tools around your tail, successfully knocking two of them away and sending the third packing. Auryn strokes your tears into your scaly flesh, fighting a laugh as the hired help resurfaces.
"I don't want to get measured!"
"Shhhh. It's okay. If even one scale is missing off that gorgeous tail I'll cut their oxygen and add a few bricks to their suits."
You still aren't convinced. Auryn melts at the way you curl against their chest. The first time they held you like this you were about the size of a puppy. Now, your tail alone was bigger as their entire torso and your arms were tree trunks compared to theirs. They had done exactly as they said. After you came into their life no one else mattered. They got you a nice large tank to start off with, fed you a healthy diet with plenty of treats since your speak lessons were going so well, and spoke with you for hours. You were already half their size by the end of the year. They used to take you on walks in your little bowl, then they had to buy a wagon to carry you around, and now you lived in a glorified swimming pool no one else had access to besides care beyond their capabilities. Having you turned them into a more compassionate, but closed off person, and got them through the worse in life. They were successful in nearly every endeavor and it was all for you.
Auryn gets close to your ear as their voice rises in pitch. "But if you reaaaally don't want to - I'll have to find some other guppy to give all the brine shrimp I have in the house to."
Your tail cracks against the pool's wall, ripping the water's surface with tidal category waves and pushing the workers back down under. "I'll be good! I will- please!"
"Haha - ok, ok." They give a thumbs up to the divers as they climb in the pool. You work with them this time, channeling your fright as their tools stretch and stick around you into the grip you hold on Auryn's arm - careful not to apply too much. They grit through the pain and as one of the divers comes up again they take the measuring tape still held by the rest and lines it up to your head.
"4 meters!"
Auryn exclaims in glee and grabs you by the cheeks, cooing and kissing your nose as they laugh. "Look at you! A whole nother meter in just one year. Keep this up and we'll have to buy an island."
A servant knocks on the sliding glass door. Auryn excuse themselves with one final kiss to your wet lips as they hop out of your tank. They hand them a phone.
"It's your parents. They are in town with your brother and would like to take you out for your birthday this evening."
Auryn gets real close to the receiver as they speak. "Eat shit and die. Stay the hell away from us."

* ˚ ✦Capricorn observation* ˚ ✦
Tumblr media
• Like any earth sign they like a timeless look or something fitting to their environment (messy environment messy look, clean environment clean look, picking up what I’m putting down?)
It also kind applies to when they’re looking for love interests.
• Very “old school” probably has a collection of some kind, maybe along the lines of retro memorabilia or collections of antiques (that they only think looks good) or they’re place looks bare because they could never spend money on “that pointless crap”
(I’ve almost met a lot of Capricorn placements who collects comic books.)
• They could never spend large amounts of money unless it’s apart of their “whole master plan” aka they will do anything to get ahead in their job or career even if it means hurting your feelings or taking your position!
That’s earths sign kinda of competitiveness.
• I personally feel like thrifting was invented by a Capricorn or the Russian mail order bride service, both ends mean business for one common thing, not love…. But money.
In some cases it means love.
• Capricorn in love is like a strong tree trunk if you appreciate it enough and have enough patience.
Can you stay all 4 seasons?
• Can you handle a Capricorn’s depression or seasonal depression because they rather get the bag than celebrate holidays including if they live far away from family.
•Free time for Capricorn means learning/ planning how to get more money when they DO have free time (which is never, they’re always busy) or tinkering around trying to make something (crafty) or fixing something that needed to be fixed 6 months ago.
They procrastinate a bit here and there.
• Just like a cancer they like they’re space and personal space but not carrying they’re home on they’re back like cancer, that’s what they lack and leads them to depression, dating a cancer can help them gain that nostalgia back for them but won’t solve there depression! (Don’t use water signs as emotional body bags.
• They do love the used, daddy issues, mommy issues people, because earlier on their life or childhood they had to grow up fast and never really shown love or proper love towards them. So they do the same.
Whata cycle Capricorn!
• They mentally think like a teenager but have a body like a 80 year old. Having back pains in highschool? And problems with they’re knees?
• Do you have crooked teeth? Deep voice? Sometimes raspy? Small face features but a long nasal cavity? Did you ever have those gold/silver caps in your teeth while growing up?
• The males are into older women, and women are into younger guys.
• Shy when it comes to love but very confident when it comes to money.
• Once when you have everything why do you feel like you gotta keep searching?
•How does it feel to chase something you don’t even know what your chasing?

Previous Part | (Series Chapter List)
Tumblr media
You walked into James’ dorm on Wednesday afternoon, seeing only the other three marauders. They gave you cautious hellos as they watched you rifle through your boyfriend’s drawer. You lifted your head, looking at one of the other drawers. Maybe it was in the other one. James stepped out of the bathroom as you started digging through the second to last drawer in his writing desk. The steam from his shower rolled out into the dorm and made the room both hot and humid.
“What are you looking for, bug?”
“The bag of candy I gave you, I left my money pouch in it… I think, I hope so.”
James, white towel still slung around his waist, moved to the top drawer of his writing desk. “I saw it last night but it was really late and then I got distracted with homework and practice. Here.”
“Thank you…” you trailed off as you noticed a bead of water roll down James’ neck and continue down his body.
“Distracted, love?”
You looked up to see a stupid grin plastered on James’ face. The two of you had agreed that while everything was fake, shameless flirting was in fact allowed. A way for you to practice your skills. And clearly James was enjoying your reaction to the fullest. He wiggled his eyebrows making you roll your eyes.
“Whatever, Potter.”
“We’re on a last name basis now?”
“Yes.”
“Oh you wound me so, my darling.” He grabbed at his heart and pretended to stumble back.
“You act like I’m in love with you.”
“Y/N, you’re dating me.”
You put your hand on his abs to shove him but James grabbed your hand, keeping it on his body. Sirius, Remus, and Peter exchanged looks. Remus, especially, was ready to set down his book and leave the room if you two needed some space. You let your hand linger for a moment longer before pushing off of James and taking your money pouch. Instead of leaving, you made yourself comfortable on his bed.
“Dating you, James Potter, doesn’t mean I like you.”
James leaned partially on his bed, mouth inches away from yours. “Bug, I don’t think you can date me if you don’t like me.”
“Ah, ah.” You put your finger to his lip. “No kisses until you aren’t naked.”
The laugh that came from James was light — a sound that his friends had never heard before. He got off of the bed to go find clothes like you asked, complaining the entire time that wearing a towel meant he wasn’t naked. The other marauders crept slowly to Remus’ bed. Sirius was so sure that you and James weren’t dating. He didn’t know why you two would lie about that but he was sure it was a lie. Now, he didn’t know. You might have still been a new friend to them but he was James’ brother. However, standing right in front of him, James looked so happy and genuine.
Sirius watched as James put on only sweatpants before practically jumping on the bed and smothering you in kisses while you complained the entire time that not wearing a shirt or boxers still meant he was somewhat naked. Eventually James calmed down, thinking that going on for too long would look suspicious.
You decided to stay for the night, getting up to go take a shower. James leaned over his bed to look for a spare shirt in his trunk, not wanting to get out of bed completely. He chuckled as you started your scream singing. For someone who could actually sing, he wasn’t sure why you chose to scream the songs when taking a shower. He closed his eyes for a moment of relaxation when one of the boys called his name. He looked back down to see it was Wormtail. The other three marauders beckoned him over. James wasn’t sure what they wanted but he had a feeling that he needed to turn his acting on.
Remus was the first to breach the topic. “Y/N is a major part of our group now, we just want to make sure that you’re both okay.”
“Why wouldn’t we be okay?”
“I mean if you two break up th—”
“We aren’t breaking up.”
Peter sighed. “Mate, even if you like Y/N, you were in love with Lily for like seven years. I know it can’t be easy to just get over her. We don’t want Y/N or you to get hurt.”
“I get it. But I would never hurt her. We’re together and I am committed to that.”
“And your feelings for Lily?”
“What do you want me to say to you guys? Yes, I still have some lingering feelings for Lily, of course. Y/N knows that and it’s going to take some time for them to go away but I really like her okay. My feelings for Lily get smaller by the week.”
James had to stop the corners of his mouth from curling upwards. He had overheard them in the corridors when they thought he wasn’t around. Lily had tried to be casual when asking about the two of you. The rest of your friends had been trying to put all their situations with the two of you together and figure out if it was serious or not. James knew the boys were just snooping something to report back to Lily.
“I know that Y/N and I aren’t serious yet b—”
“You aren’t serious?” Remus asked.
“I mean she still has feelings for Xenophilius, I’m not the only one having to get over someone. So we aren’t serious, but we are exclusive. I wouldn’t even think of snogging let alone sleeping with another girl if we’re exclusive. And we’ve decided that we will be currently.”
“Currently?”
“It might be easier to get serious if we are exclusive but no labels. We still need to sort our feelings out and maybe we’ll go on dates with other people to figure it out but that’s too much for either of us right now. And I’m not ready at all so, yeah, we’re exclusive currently.”
“But not serious?”
“Moony, are you deaf?”
“Well,” Sirius interrupted. “Speaking of snogging. Have you? We’ve seen you kiss but have you snogged her.”
“No.”
The marauders left him alone after that, having gathered all the information needed. You came back out and flopped on James’ bed once more. He got up to cuddle with you. If anything happened afterwards, you didn’t know because you had fallen asleep. You were kind of excited for tomorrow. It was supposed to be a surprise but James told you that he had a date planned for you during your free time right after breakfast. Fake dates were still nice.
While you were having the sleep of your life, James’ brain was causing him to toss and turn. Lily actually seemed interested. He couldn’t believe it. This was the closest he’s ever been before. Maybe his plan wasn’t so dumb after all. You’d get Xeno, he’d get Lily and you both would be very happy.
Morning rolled around. You tried to wiggle yourself out of James’ death grip, complaining quietly so you wouldn’t wake him. You could almost laugh as he whispered Lily’s name before remembering where you were. If any of the other boys heard him then there could be issues.
Although, you heard them last night. You sighed. Maybe you were only worried because if James got Lily too soon then you wouldn’t get Xeno. But you didn’t want to stop him from the love of his life, already understanding the feeling too well. They needed another plan. But at the moment, you needed to pee and get dressed in the last clean uniform you have before laundry needs to be done.
To your surprise, the girls were up when you reached your shared dorm. You smiled sheepishly as you went to grab a washcloth from your wardrobe drawer so you could wash your face. Knowing they’d probably hound you if they were awake this early, you left the bathroom door open after using the toilet. It was nice to know they worried about you but also awkward at times.
The girls looked at your outfit as they tried to figure out where the hell you came from. You had no shoes on, just slippers so you had to have stayed in the castle. But you were wearing sweatpants so you could have slept anywhere and been comfortable. Dorcas was the first to notice.
“Is that James’?” she pointed to the cream colored thermal shirt you were wearing.
You nodded with the toothbrush still in your mouth. The girls looked at each other. Honestly, they expected you to be at Alice’s dorm like you sometimes were. Lily, Marlene, and Mary decided to let Dorcas continue the line of questioning.
“So you slept over at his dorm?”
“Yeah,” you said before washing the rest of the soap suds off of your face and standing up straight again. “I thought I lost my money pouch but then I remembered I bought James candy at Honeydukes and was hoping I left it in the bag. Thank God I did. I just ended up crashing there because I got too lazy to move.”
“You two are pretty serious it seems.”
Hook. Line. And sinker. Part of you wanted to deviate from the plan because you just weren’t sure where you and Xeno stood but you couldn’t do that to James. Not when you had become good friends. So you snorted instead.
“Not really. We’re just exclusive,” you repeated the thing you overheard James say to the boys. “I think it’s important to be when we’re trying to figure each other out.”
“What’s there to figure out? You two like each other, don’t you?” Marlene asked.
“Feelings are weird.” You finished changing and grabbed your bag. “Look, James are I are just talking. I know we’ve had some moments but it’s not like either one of us meant to be naked around each other. I was drunk once and then Sirius barged in a—”
“Wait, James wasn’t in the shower already?” Mary interrupted.
“Uh, no.”
“So that was a lie?”
“Do you know how embarrassing it is to admit that we hid from Sirius and he turned into a deer.”
The girls started laughing so hard their sides were hurting. That sounded more like the James Potter they knew and something about the entire scenario seemed more endearing than the first story you told them. Lily stopped laughing and started smiling. One, because listening to the real story made James seem like a derpy sweetheart and two because you said you weren’t serious. Exclusive was in fact very different from serious. Everyone knew that. You all turned at the knock on the door and Lily’s smile faded a bit when James stepped in after being told he could enter. You put on your best surprised face.
“Hi.”
“Hey, bug, you left your money pouch again.”
“I did?”
“You need to enchant this thing… Hey, you’re free after breakfast right?”
“Yes I am.”
“Brilliant. Can I take you out on a date?”
“Really?”
“Yeah, we haven’t done that yet and we probably should.”
You chuckled. “We probably should.”
“Yeah,” he repeated himself. “Yeah, dates are good. Especially having a real date before your birthday. I can’t believe you have a Halloween birthday by the way. I’ve never met someone with that birthday before.”
“James Potter, are you nervous?”
“Nervous? No. It’s just a first date. What’s the worst that could happen?”
“I’m assuming you don’t want me to answer that.”
“Please don’t.”
You grabbed a purse before walking up to James and holding his hand. “Let’s go. No matter what happens, promise we’ll have fun.”
“That I can do.”
You and James sat on the top level of Three Broomsticks in the very back corner of the place. He opted to get the two of you food at the cafe portion instead of asking for a waiter so no one could interrupt you or worse overhear something they shouldn’t have.
A sigh left your mouth. “Lily likes you and I don’t think we should drag that out before she loses interest again.”
“But what about you and Xeno?”
“What about us? He’s lost interest because I don’t have any experience so there’s no point in anything. Let’s just get you your girl and let me wallow in peace.”
James set down your hot chocolate and looked you in the eye. “Do you really like Xeno? Like how I love Lily?”
“Yes,” you answered from the depths of your heart.
“Then we aren’t giving up. We’ll make him interested again. We need to be a whirlwind of passion and fiery breakup but nothing that can’t be mended either because I actually like being friends with you.”
You and James finished eating breakfast and decided to stroll around Hogsmeade for the remainder of your free time. The two of you needed a plan with set dates and no deviations. You just wanted to be done with everything in no more than a week but James insisted on three months. In the end, you both compromised and decided on two months. Just until the end of the year and then you’d quit whether you got the guy or not.
“But what are we going to do?” you asked.
“Maybe we don’t work out… No, that’s not interesting enough.”
You stopped walking, making James stop as well. “The jumper curse!”
“What?”
“The jumper curse, it’s a perfect way to break up. You, James Potter, will make me a jumper and later I will break up with you. In front of everybody.”
“But why a jumper? What curse?”
“You’re so daft sometimes.”
“Hey!”
“It’s true.”
“Less insulting and more telling me about this curse.”
“It’s an old wives tale but it happens enough that people don’t really question its truth if it does happen. It’s when one person makes the other a jumper and pretty soon after they break up.”
“Why though?”
“A host of reasons. The person that got the sweater thinks it’s too intimate too quick into the relationship so they end it, or the person doesn’t appreciate the maker enough, or the maker spends too much time with the jumper and not enough with the receiver. There’s probably way more I’m forgetting.”
“Hmmm, not a bad idea at all, bug. Let’s do it.”
The two of you made a plan to reconvene before the end of the day when there was time and to finalize details of the elaborate skit.

Green looks good on you
Tumblr media
You were a relatively newer student. You normally kept to yourself but you always dreamt of being friends with the main trio, especially with the infamous Suguru Geto. Yet, he always seemed to hate you, even when you openly showed you felt the opposite.
pairings: suguru geto x f!reader
warnings and whatnots: Shoko being a girls girl. Scheming. Geto actually realizes he likes you??? crazy??? Gojo flirting. Geto still being mean and jealous 😔😔 Utahime x Gojo mention because i love them. Sorry for late posting, i’ve been busy with exams and stuff :( Not proofread!
chapter 1 : are we still friends? chapter 2 : can we be friends? chapter 3 : sorry, not sorry chapter 4 : [currently reading] chapter 5: runaway. chapter 6: burn.
The hotel lobby was quiet.
The boys were at the reception checking in as you sat next to Shoko. you look down at your feet, not knowing what you were really doing with Suguru and the others.
“Our rooms are ready.” A voice says, pulling you out of your trance. Suguru stares down at you. Heat rushes to you face but you stay silent, standing up and taking the keys out of Suguru’s hand indignantly and pulling Shoko near you as you all head into the lift.
“Alright! Let’s go Shoko!” you say, smiling at her. She stares at you, sympathy laced in her eyes.
Why was there sympathy in her eyes?
Could she tell? Could she tell the events of the morning and evening were eating you up inside? That no matter how much you try to deny it or try to leave him, he maintains king in your mind? He maintains the man who you stupidly fell in love with.
“10 am tomorrow okay!” Satoru says as you all move to our separate rooms.
“Okayy, don’t be late Satoru,” Shoko drawls out. He rolls his eyes as he enters the room besides ours; Suguru trailing behind him. You stand behind Shoko as she enters the room first, glancing at Suguru. His eyes met yours first before he closes the door of his room.
The room was cozy. Two twin beds with a television in front and a bathroom at the side. It was comfortable, much thanks to Satoru’s money. You seriously had to thank him for all the expenses.
You move inside the room, choosing the bed nearer to the window. The view must be beautiful in the morning. You lay down your trunk, opening to pull out some clothes and toiletries.
“So… what’s up with you and Suguru?”
You look up from my bag, staring at Shoko who stands in front of the bathroom, cigarette in hand as she looks at you. She didn’t have a readable expression on her face.
“I don’t think you’re allowed to smoke here, Shoko.” You answer, avoiding the question.
She moves nearer to you, as she sighs. “I’m not going to smoke in here. I’m smoking out in the balcony.” She answers, opening the sliding door beside your bed.
“You still haven’t answered my question.”
“There’s nothing between us.”
Animosity. Hatred. Annoyance.
That was what was between you and him. You follow Shoko as she smokes beside you out in the balcony. You admire the view around you as the cold air from the night sky hits your skin, sending goosebumps through you.
You glance at the balcony besides yours, the one connected to Suguru and Satoru’s room. The curtain was open. From your view, you couldn’t see Satoru, but you catch a glimpse of Suguru lounging on his bed, reading a book. Your eyes soften as they fall on him.
“Nothing is between you, yet you look at him like that.” Shoko interrupts, snorting at the statement. She still stared off to the distance, taking a puff from her cigarette. You stare at her, not saying anything as you know what she says is true. Unfortunately, you did like that idiot.
“You still like him, don’t you?”
“It doesn’t matter as he doesn’t like me back. He’s made it very clear that he hates me.”
Shoko keeps quiet, pulling out her phone. “He doesn’t hate you. He’s just a dumbass.”
Silence fills the air as you both have nothing else to say. You don’t know how to even respond to Shoko’s words. He didn’t like you. Hell, he was such a prick about it too. Even if he likes you, you doubted he had even realised it with how much of a jerk he was to you. You look at Shoko as she types on her phone. You sigh as you turn to take in the scenery. The cityscape was quiet but restless, you catch glimpses of people’s ongoing lives that hadn’t come to a rest even in the darkest and coldest of night.
Why were you so hung up on him? He doesn’t even pay you any attention. More so, even if he did like you, how in the world would you get him to realise it? Unbeknownst to you, Shoko was already starting another scheme with Satoru to get you and Suguru together and fix all your concerns.
Shoko 🚬 : It’s so obvious she’s in love with him and he’s in love with her. Can you like… make him realise he likes her or smth?
Satoru 🧑🏻‍🦳: I can try? Idk Suguru is like stupid in those kinds of things.
shoko 🚬: just try ur best. He can’t be that bad.
“You know I think he definitely has a thing for you.” Shoko randomly says as she blows her last puff of smoke, putting out the fire on the banister and smushing it under her foot.
You turn to her, eyebrows furrow. “Why’d you say that?”
“The way he looks at you. Sure, he’s incredibly rude and everything but I think he does like you. Just doesn’t want to admit it.” She moves inside the room, not looking at you as she walks.
You roll your eyes. “Don’t give me that pity talk.”
She sits down on her bed as you close the door to the balcony. “I’m not. Even Satoru thinks so.”
“Then why won’t he admit it?” You cross your arms, looking at her sceptically. Even Satoru thinks so? Surely not. Satoru, for all his foolishness and playfulness was incredibly smart, even if not academically (which he still somehow excels in), he’s good at spotting people and reading them. If he, someone who is best friends with Suguru and can read people so accurately thinks that Suguru likes you… maybe there was some truth to those words. Yet, Suguru had been nothing but rude and disingenuous to you.
“Beats me,” Shoko says, laying down on her bed. “Don’t worry though, Satoru and I have it all planned out!”
Your eyes widen as you move closer to her. “What do you mean by that?”
She grins at you. A giant grin that fit the smug look on her face. “You’ll see!”
You sit on her bed, pulling her up by her shoulder. She laughs loudly at you as you start shaking her. “Shoko, tell me!”
“Nope!”
Satoru sighs as he reads Shoko’s text message. He looks at Suguru who was beside him reading a book. How boring!
“Suguru!” He whines out, earning a glance from the long-haired boy. “I’m bored.”
“Do something about it then.” Suguru answers, turning back to his book.
“You’re no fun.” Satoru pouts.
How would he bring the topic of you and Suguru out? He really wanted to talk about it without having Suguru blow up on him or say something so vehemently wrong and stupid.
“Suguru.”
Suguru sighs as he closes the book and turns to Satoru who was staring at him with his bright blue eyes.
“Yeah?”
“What do you think about y/n, liken nowadays?” Satoru asks, looking in front where the television was mounted, even though it wasn’t turned on.
Suguru stares at Satoru, eyes widening a bit, unsure of what to say. He didn’t exactly know what he thought of you.
You were annoying and dumb at times but kind and genuinely fun to hang out with. Yet, he had a dislike for you. On what basis though?
“She’s alright.” Suguru settles on. “Why are you asking?” He asks suspiciously, unsure on the white-haired man’s intentions. Satoru isn’t the type to randomly ask about people without wanting something. Did he like her?
“She’s quite pretty you know? And the way she smiles is so… sweet!” Satoru decides on, looking at Suguru for a reaction.
Suguru’s eyes twitch as he hears Satoru compliment you. He didn’t know how to react to that. His mind falters back to all the times you had smiled at him. You rarely did it now but when you had first met… Gosh you had a stunning smile. Suguru felt his stomach turn as his mind lingered on your smile.
“I guess you can say that.” Suguru says quietly, turning to his book to hide from Satoru’s gaze. It was futile as the man was born with Six-Eyes and could immediately tell the shift in Suguru’s vibe.
“I mean like, I wish she would just smile at me more! She’s so pretty. And the way she’d say my name! Have you heard it Suguru? It’s so cute!” Satoru continues , trying to get a rise out of him. He grins at Suguru, finding it funny how his best friend still didn’t realise his impending feeling on the girl he claimed to hate.
Satoru had been there for every single heated rant about you. Every single anger filled words that slipped out of Suguru’s mouth, Satoru was there to take them and listen to them. Yet, he was never fully convinced that the curse-eater actually despised you. His words, sure there was nothing but hatred and malice in them but the way his eyes soften every time you entered the room only for him to quickly change them into a glare. The way he would sneak glances at you throughout every discussion. The way his jaw would clench every time another man would get too close to you. He liked you, yet he was just hiding it behind all that anger as a way to safeguard himself.
Suguru’s grip on the book tightens as Satoru speaks. He had heard the way you said Satoru’s name. The way you sometimes just shortened it to ‘Toru.’ It was disgusting. Vile. Why would you even call him that? And Satoru enjoyed it? It was so weird. Suguru didn’t feel right. Why was Satoru enjoying it so much? You gave way more attention to him anyway so he should be the one enjoying it, not Satoru. The way you said his name was softer, sweeter. It was sweeter than all the world’s sugar and honey combined. It didn’t make sense. Why was Satoru so over the moon?
You were his, not Satoru’s.
Suguru cleared his throat as his mind wanders, realising what he had just said to himself. He looks at Satoru who stares at him expectantly.
“Yeah. I’ve heard it.” Suguru says plainly. “It’s nothing special, she does that to everyone. She does it to me a lot.”
“My, Suguru, you jealous?” Satoru says, moving closer to Suguru, head tilting as a shit-grinning smile lay complacent on his face.
Suguru’s eyes widen as a tint of red develops on his face. He looks at Satoru, first in shock that he quickly changed to disturbance.
“Shut it.”
“You are! Oh my god, you like her don’t you?!” Satoru says, smiling widely as he leans back. Suguru keeps quiet.
“So… when are you gonna ask her out, hm Suguru?”
Suguru slams his books close as he turns to Satoru. “I don’t like her. I hate her.”
Satoru sighs, resting his head on the bed’s headboard.
“I know you Suguru. The way your eyes glance at her every time she enters a room, no, even the mere mention of her name is enough to make you glance up. You search for her. You falter every time she smiles at you. Every time she calls your name.”
Suguru stares at Satoru not knowing what to say. Satoru catches his gaze, giving a keen and smug smile. “You like her, you just don’t want to admit it because you’re scared you’ll break her.”
He hated to admit but Satoru was right. Shit, he was right. Did he actually like you? All this time? He had just ruined every minuscule percent of a chance he had with you. He didn’t want to watch you break like everyone else who has loved him.
“It’s alright, your best friend Gojo Satoru is here to help you!” Satoru says proudly as he goes to wrap an arm around Suguru, who pulls away, disgust evident in his face.
“No thank you, you’ll scare away every single women trying to date me.”
“Hey! I’ll let you know, plenty of women have come crawling to me for affection,” Satoru says rolling his eyes.
“Yet the one girl you want doesn’t want you.” Suguru says, a small smile on his face.
“Shut up! Utahime is an exception!” Satoru grunts, frustration on his face. “Whatever! I’ll help you anyway!”
“Please don’t.”
“Too bad!”
10 in the morning, the next day.
“They’re late.” Suguru says, looking at his watch. He wore a normal grey sweatshirt, his hair neatly combed back. Satoru was lounging on a lobby chair, glued to his phone.
“Texting Utahime?” Suguru asks sneeringly, moving closer to the white-haired man. He glances at his phone, it was opened to messages but he couldn’t read who.
“Shut up Suguru!” Satoru says jokingly, eyes still on his phone as Shoko continues to message him.
shoko🚬: why is our plan just to leave them alone together and run away to somewhere else?
shoko 🚬: it’s kinda dumb
satoru 🧑🏻‍🦳: do u hv a better plan?
satoru 🧑🏻‍🦳: it’s gonna work. Trust 🤞🤞🤞
shoko 🚬: if she comes back crying, you’re dead meat.
satoru 🧑🏻‍🦳: 😔😔
“Hey, Suguru.” Satoru says, leaning back to look at his friend who was peering down on him.
“Yeah?”
“You want to go to that like… bookstore right?”
“Yeah? Why?”
He looks at Satoru, tilting his head, confused at what his friend was getting at.
“Nothing, just confirming.” Satoru mumbles, turning back to his phone. Suguru’s eyes trained on Satoru before turning back to the lift which finally opens, revealing you and Shoko.
Crap.
You wore a black sweatshirt with long black pants. It looked almost as if you and him were matching clothes. He clears his throat as his eyes scanned your figure. Did you do it on purpose? Just to rile him up?
Satoru restrains a laugh as he sees you, standing up from his seat to greet you and Shoko.
“Nice outfit. You look identical to Suguru. What? Are you a couple now?” Satoru asks, teasingly, his eyes gleaming even through his dark rimmed sunglasses.
Suguru glares at Satoru but couldn’t help but feel hurt as he saw the offended look on your face. Why was he hurt? He shouldn’t care about your feelings. You were just some girl. Some girl he was friends with.
“As if!” You scoff out, feigning offence before your face drops to a wide grin to Satoru.
“Anyways! Where are we going? Breakfast?” You ask, changing the topic. Your eyes move around the scenery, catching sight of Suguru who looks slightly saddened. You furrow your brows slightly, confused.
“Oh, we’re going to some bookstore that Suguru here wants to look at!” Satoru says, arm around his best friend’s shoulder as he makes a face of disgust and gives a thumbs down. You laugh at his actions.
Your laugh sent shivers down Suguru’s spine. He wanted to rewind the moment and listen to it over and over again.
“Hey, be nice! What bookstore do you want to go to? I want to look at some books too.” You say, turning to Suguru and giving him a smile.
Internally, you were screaming. You didn’t know how to feel about him, especially after all the new information that Shoko has spilled on you. You wanted to gauge if he actually liked you. Stupid sure, as he had never really shown signs of affection to you yet you thought it was worth a try. It was his best friends that told you this knowledge.
“Just some random one. I wanna see if it has this novel i want.” Suguru says plainly as his eyes focus on you. Satoru was right, your smile was beautiful. It was blinding. He looks away, moving to walk out of the hotel to ensure that his feelings for you don’t spill out then and there.
What the hell was wrong with him?
Just a week ago, he was convinced head to toe that all his feelings for you were negative and that he had not one ounce of love for you. Yet, now all the sudden he couldn’t even stand to look at you and see your smile on the basis it was too pretty?
Was he going crazy?
Did he actually like you? Gosh, he did like you. How pathetic. He likes you and can’t even say it.
You watch as Suguru walks off, Satoru quickly chasing after him. You turn to Shoko who shrugs at you.
“My point still stands.” She says, before following the two boys in front of her.
You stand there for a second processing everything for a second.
Why was he so goddamn hard to understand?
part 5?

🕸️ | Prophetess! Reader x MK
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• "Born" from a tree at the Wu Shi Academy, you were found by Raiden, Kung Lao, Johnny, and Kenshi after Kung Lao's hat sliced a nearby tree that revealed a human inside which is you.
Raiden huffed as he wiped away a bead of sweat from his forehead after finishing his daily training with the monks. From the corner of his eye, Kung Lao enters with a huge grin, wider than usual. It made him suspicious. What genius idea does he have in mind now?
And as if the younger could hear his thoughts, Kung Lao beams as he pulls out a razor hat. How the hell he made it, Raiden won't even ask.
"That doesn't look safe," he points out, leaning away cautiously.
"it's genius, Raiden," Kung Lao waves his hand dismissively, trailing his fingers along the hat's sharp edges. He does so carelessly and cuts his fingers, earning himself a hiss and a sigh from his friend.
"See? I told you."
Kung Lao raised a smug brow and the hat was sent flying around, faster than the wind as it cuts through everything it comes across. From the practice dolls, to the stands, and even the tall old tree on the side. The monks ducked, some jumped, few froze, but the genius man stood confidently with pride as it flew back at him, proving his point.
"That's a pretty deep cut," Johnny laughs amusely at the demonstration but as he zooms the camera on the tree's wound, his face drops and his eyes squint.
"I know I'm not much of a plant expert, but I do know plants don't bleed."
Kenshi scoffs. "Has the loss of money and fame driven you insane, Cage?"
"Hey!" Johnny yells, his expression changing from amusement to annoyance. "I have not fallen from stardom!" he claims.
"It's only a temporary setback! When this is all over, I'll eventually find my way back! Like everyone does! When they're lost," he adds as if reassuring himself, his face filled with determination and confidence.
A silent clash ensues between the two and the air tenses as they shoot daggers at each other with their eyes, Johnny's smirk taunting yet Kenshi's brow is threatening. "No, it's really bleeding," Raiden, who has been silently observing, breathes out, staring bewildered at the tree, his eyes wide in confusion.
"Look," he says, pointing to the tree's trunk, which still bleeds profusely.
And as the four men eye the said scene, it is no mistake that the tree is indeed bleeding . The scarlet liquid dirties it's clean wood and as they approach closer, little sniffles could be heard from inside.
"Call Lord Liu Kang."
• You were found nestled within the tree, unconscious and malnourished, with no memory of who you are and how you ended up there or why.
• The first few nights at the Wu Shi were filled with sleepless nights, bothering you with blurry yet bothersome enough to keep you up awake and pacing around your room. Some were concerning, some were scary, and some you would rather not speak of.
• Having enough of all the pent up feelings, you turn to the only thing you knew: weaving. Despite having no recollection of your memories, you knew how to weave— and in those carefully woven fibers tells stories yet to manifest.
• You truly wished not to bother Lord Liu Kang about your weird visions for he had already done enough to provide you a new home, but when you awake from yet another nightmare to find him before you, you knew you can no longer keep it to yourself.
• Despite how weird your story may seem, the God seemed to be unbothered. In fact, it may be small, but you can see the tug of his lips as you speak. You wonder if he knew about this.
• You wanted to ask but a part of you held you back, and so Liu Kang ends the conversation with a "you should get some rest."

𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲: I know her introduction isn't really canon compliant, but let's just pretend it is. Originally, this was written for an oc and is purely self indulgent, but hey, why not let others in on the fun. I apologize if there are grammar mistakes, English is not my mother tongue. I would also like to apologize for the shitty writing because I'm not really a writer. Also, if I were to continue this, I still have no one in mind to pair her up with— comment if you have any suggestions.

Lifeguard Required (Divus x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Mentions of alcohol (none present)
Note: Reader is an adult staff member, implied to be a teacher/professor or teacher's assistant
“You know, sometimes I wonder if teaching was a mistake.” Divus took another long swig of his drink. Thankfully, it was non-alcoholic. “If this keeps up, I’ll be getting gray hairs soon.”
“I think you’d look good with them,” you said with a smile. “You will have the silver fox thing going for you.”
Divus let out a short chuckle as he adjusted himself in his seat, leg now crossed over his knee. “Well, thank you for the effort to make me feel better.”
“No problem,” you smirked as you brought your soda to your lips, “but I meant what I said.”
As though to stray from the conversation of aging, Divus changed the subject. “You know, when I was a student myself, I became a lifeguard part-time during the summer months.”
“Really now?” You raised an eyebrow at the vision of a young Divus decked out in red swim trunks, a whistle around his neck and a red float under his arm. “Why’s that? Strapped for cash?”
“Not necessarily,” he said. “While the extra money was a plus, it was mainly to build up my resume. It wasn’t the most…remarkable thing back then. It was experience enough while I pursued my interest in fashion.”
“Do you have any pictures of you from back then?” You leaned over your chair as you raised your eyebrows in interest. “I require evidence to believe your story - and I’m curious as to how you looked back then.”
“I looked not too different than I do now.” He picked his drink up again. “I age like a fine wine~”
“Mhm,” you hummed, which was then followed by a teasing remark. “A strong one, to be sure, but a little dry from all the stress and age.” You ended that statement with a sip of your soda for effect.
A smirk to match crossed Divus’s lips as he watched you sip your drink. He looked like he was going to say something else - then a loud scream caused you both to flinch. You whipped your heads in the direction of the scream just in time to see Idia Shroud get tossed into the pool by Leona Kingscholar. A loud splash resounded throughout the area, followed by droplets of water raining down from the impact. Divus quickly placed his glass on the small table between you two before he bolted up from his chair. He looked almost ready to sprint forward and dive in after him - but he relaxed the moment Idia’s head burst out from the water. He gasped for air, hands coming up to wipe dark blue strands of hair from his face.
“What the hell?!” Idia coughed as he yelled. His yellow eyes glared daggers into Leona; if his hair was still alight, you figured it’d be burning red.
“So, you do have hair under that burning turnip.” Leona chuckled as he smirked in Idia’s direction, completely unbothered. “Mystery solved.”
Before either could get out another word, Divus’s boomed out in anger. “Bad dog! Kingscholar, come here, now!”
“Hm?” Leona tilted his head in the professor’s direction. While he appeared unphased, his tail twitched in irritation. “We were just foolin’ around, professor Crewel.” His smirked appeared again as he grinned and gestured to Idia. “Shroud is completely unharmed, as you can see. Do you really think I would hurt him?”
The sweet talk and charm wouldn’t work, you knew that. Still, Leona always gave Divus a hard time; you doubt the lion would listen to him much. Then, from the other side of the pool, Trein appeared. Though he did not yell, his voice was stern and level, as though scolding a child. “Kingscholar, come with me. It seems that, once more, we need to have a chat about your poolside etiquette.”
You were unsure why Leona didn’t pick a fight with Trein, nor why he complied with his demands with little more than a grunt of annoyance. You saw that annoyance, that irritation, as Leona’s ears flattened against his head, snarling under his breath as he turned and headed away with the professor. Was there some sort of begrudging respect the young man had for the elder? Perhaps…you did hear once from Crowley how Trein beat Leona in a duel during the student’s freshman year. Ever since that day, when Leona lost his own challenge, he hadn’t been too much of a problem for that teacher in particular. You’d have to ask Divus if he knew anything of that incident later.
For now, you watched as Divus helped Idia out from the pool. The poor boy was soaked to the bone, black hoodie weighing him down. You quickly ran and grabbed a towel for him; once you retrieved the biggest you could find, you draped it around his shoulders. Idia didn’t say much in thanks, but he shot you the smallest of smiles as his show of gratitude. Divus placed a gentle hand on Idia’s back as he began him back inside, whispering words of comfort you could scarcely hear. Before they got too far, Divus looked over his shoulder at you and asked, “Can you handle things until I return?”
You nodded and gave him a small smile of your own. “Of course.”
Divus gave you one of his own before he led Idia away. That poor boy…no wonder he often stayed in his room. You glanced in the direction that Trein and Leona had disappeared, the two no doubt having a thorough discussion somewhere just out of sight. The other students present had gone back to what they’d been doing before their fun was disturbed. You sighed, thankful no one was hurt, but tired all the same. As you sat back in your chair and took another sip of your soda, a part of you wished it was spiked - just a little.
***
A long sigh combined with an exhausted groan escaped Divus’s lips as he returned. Though he elegantly sat down in his chair, his posture was anything but. His head lolled back as he slumped in his seat, his hand coming to run through his hair and slick it back from his forehead. His tropical button-up - one of many designs of his for the season - was now unbuttoned and slightly damp at the back. He looked more casual than usual, for sure, yet also far more exhausted than before. You wished you could tell him it’d soon be over, but that would be a lie. The trip had another week to go, and then it was back to the classrooms.
You offered Divus his drink, which he took with a slight nod of his head. You’d never seen him chug something so fast. A chuckled as he finally opened his eyes and looked at the night sky as though it were the cause of his strife. “I think you’re ready for bed,” you said with a small laugh.
“I’m ready for a vacation,” he grumbled.
“But we’re on a vacation?”
“If this is a vacation for you, I dread what you do on the daily.” Divus set his now empty glass on the table as he continued. “This is work with a tropical backdrop; I need one away from children.”
“I think we all do,” you giggled. “A weekend getaway for the staff sounds lovely.”
Divus seemed to scoff as he said, “You assume half the staff are not the children I speak of?”
Now that made you laugh. The alchemy professor certainly had a point; a certain headmage and coach were maddeningly unhelpful for most of this trip. What would they do if you, Divus, Mozus, and Sam took off for a weekend or more? You honestly dreaded the possibilities. “That is very true,” you uttered as your laugh faded. “We can’t take them anywhere, can we?”
While you gave no context as to whether it was the students or Crowley and Vargas you were referring to, Divus didn’t seem to care. Either answer would be correct, in his mind. He nodded with a small ‘mhm’ as a few loose strands of white and black hair fell over his forehead. “Like untrained dogs, they don’t know how to behave.” He glanced over at two certain first years as he uttered, “Some more than others.”
“Well, at least summer break is just a month away.” You sympathized with the small groan Divus let out at the reminder of how much time was left before then. “When that time comes, I’m sure we’ll all be thankful for the rest.”
“If that rest is too good, I just might quit,” Divus joked. There was some truth to that suggestion, however. Again, you didn’t blame him. Divus rested his chin on his knuckles as he turned his gaze on you. “What do you plan to do for the break?”
“Mmn, I don’t know,” you shrugged. “I’ll probably just relax at home, watch movies, maybe order takeout - stuff like that.”
“No plans whatsoever?”
“Bold of you to assume those aren’t my plans.”
Divus let out a small ‘hmph’ as he smiled. He simply looked at you for a few seconds, as though deep in thought. You grew a tad nervous, a little shy, under that gray gaze; you mildly shrunk in your own chair as you eyed him. “What?”
“Oh, just thinking,” he replied. He certainly seemed to be plotting something, you thought. He straightened his posture as he spoke again, “What is your opinion on upscale restaurants?”
“Like the ones you have to dress up for?” He nodded. “Um…I’ve never been to one before,” you chuckled under your breath, “can’t afford it with my meager salary. So, I can’t say I really have an opinion on them.”
“I see.” Those cunning eyes scanned you from head to toe. A chill ran up your back under his intense gaze; you felt like grabbing your towel and hiding underneath. Before you could ask what he was doing, he said, “I think you’d look quite fetching in red.”
“Uh…t-thank you?” Though a blush threatened to creep on your cheeks, you barely noticed in your confusion. “Where’d that come from?”
“Again, I am just contemplating.”
“Contemplating what?”
“On exactly where I should take you for dinner.”
If this were a cartoon, you’d have been knocked out of your chair by that statement. Your soda was left completely forgotten on the table beside you as you leaned against the armrest of your chair. “I-I’m sorry, what?”
Divus seemed to find your reply amusing for the way he tittered. “Don’t tell me that’s how you respond to every advance you receive?”
“I’ve…never received an advance.” You couldn’t help but answer honestly; I mean, what else could you reply with? Your head swum with so many questions that you could barely think of anything else.
“Truly?” You noticed Divus’s smile had now stretched into a charming smirk. “It’s good to know I do not have any competition.”
“Competition for what?” You didn’t mean for your voice to rise in pitch like that. Thankfully, no one other than Divus seemed to notice.
“So, even you, a fellow trainer of pups, are blind to such simple things.” A chuckle rumbled in his throat and rib cage before he spoke again with a wiggle of his fingers. “Come closer.” With no reason to object, you complied. Divus leaned a little closer to your face, voice a volume above a whisper as he explained himself. “On the day summer break begins, and we’re relieved of our duties, I am going to take you to a celebratory dinner. You do not need to fret about your choice of clothing - I will provide it. All you need to do is let me pick you up, drive you there, and, hopefully, enjoy the food and company.”
“This…isn’t with Trein or the other staff, is it?” you asked, nearly at a loss for words.
Divus chuckled again. “No, pup, it isn’t.” His fingertip tapped the underside of your chin. “Do you understand?”
Your nod was shaky, along with your words. “Y-Yes, I do.”
“Good dog~” He pulled away from you in that instance. “I look forward to it.”
He stood from his seat and took his glass. He then grabbed your can of soda, shook it a little, then placed it back on the table. “Your can is near empty.” He held up his glass as he offered, “Would you like a drink?”
Somehow, you managed to regain your composure. “Yes, I would, thank you.”
“Preference?”
A smile tugged at your lips as he met his eye. “I trust your judgement.”
Divus seemed to take that as more than just picking your drink. Though his smile held its usual charm, you could spy a certain softness creep into those silver gray eyes. He gave a small nod, “I’ll be back shortly.”
With that, he turned and walked away. Even when he left, you couldn’t help but keep smiling. Even when a certain housewarden got into an argument with a certain twin, you wore that smile through your whole mediation of the situation. You loved your job, you really did…but summer break couldn’t come soon enough. Who knows - maybe a certain lifeguard might come to your aide.
