"Clamp" Joe said from across to table to one of the scrub nurses. "Lap pads" I said. We were doing a coronary artery bypass graft on a six year old patient. Five hours in and Lena was doing really well. She had maintained stability the entire time, making recovery look good for her.
I was about to irrigate when the door to the OR burst open. Me and Joe didn't look up, too focused on finishing Lena's cabg, starting to close up her heart with delicate sutures. "Y/n Y/L/N?" a low masculine voice boomed out. My head shot up to meet Joe's eyes, silently asking what to do. Her eyes were almost as wide as mine.
That voice belonged to James Barnes, head of the Brooklyn mafia. They had access to anywhere and everywhere in Brooklyn, no questions asked.
After having a silent conversation, we both opted to go back to Lena's heart. The voice boomed again, this time louder and much closer. "Y/n, scrub out." Joe whispered. I couldn't scrub out. Not now. Not while it was just me and Joe with a few scrub nurses. She couldn't close alone. "No." I kept suturing, almost to the point where we could start to close up entirely. "What?!" her head jerked up "I said no. You can't close on your own. Lena has been my patient for six months. I know everything about her, and her family. I am finishing this surgery with you and I will be there when they see their baby girl for the first time in six hours." I clipped the last suture, ready to close up her chest. "Y/n, I think you should listen to Joe and scrub out."
I suddenly felt cold metal pressed to my temple. "Put the tools down Y/L/N. I'm not afraid to pull this trigger." I heard the click of a bullet sliding into place at the end of his threat. I was shaking with tears running down my cheeks at this point. "I'm sorry," I said to Joe, it was obvious that I was crying. Through blurry eyes, I saw a tear slide down her cheek too.
What was going to happen to Lena? And her family? What would Joe tell them? I stepped back from the table and let Mike, my favourite nurse, help me take off my gown and relieve my trembling hands from my sterile blue gloves.
Even if I wanted to, I couldn't go back to that table. By pressing a gun to my head, James had broken the sterile field. "Well done," James spoke lowly into my ear. I hadn't noticed when, but his hand was wrapped securely around my arm. He led me away from the table, out of the OR and into the hallway where he stood in front of the elevator. The entire time my sobs never ceased and neither did the grip he had on my arm.
He let go before we left the elevator. Outside, many of what were probably his men waited for us. They lined the hallways. I felt like a sheep being herded by big, powerful, scary wolves. Tears were still running down my face as I made eye contact with my Chief of Surgery and Resident Chief. I had grown close with them over the years, and now they were watching me be escorted out of the hospital.
They knew what this meant. I was taken. The mafia had me now. Tears ran down their faces, and the faces of my coworkers who I loved like family. I tried to keep my head up to let them know I would be okay, but I couldn't help the way my shoulder shook from my sobs.
James helped me into a black car. In the front seat was a blonde, with a driver who had dark skin and short hair. I didn't try to hide the fact that I wanted to be anywhere but here. I felt exhausted, more emotionally than mentally.
"Where are we going?" I asked. "Home." James said, adjusting the cuff of his dress shirt. "I hate you, James Barnes." I said, defeat laced in my tone. "Please, call me Bucky." he said. He sounded sad. That bastard. How did he have the nerve to be sad when he is the one who chose to steal me out of my OR. "What are you going to do when I kill myself?" I asked. "You won't kill yourself." the driver spoke up. "Sam-" the blonde said in a nervous and warning tone.
"She won't." he said, looking at the blonde. "You're y/n y/l/n. You're a surgeon." he said, looking at me through the rearview mirror. Everyone's attention was on him as he refocused on the road. "You saved my sister's life, Sarah Wilson. Pancreatic cancer. Four hours after being in your OR she was cancer free. We were told to start planning her funeral. I was signing paperwork to legally adopt my nephews, but you saved her life." he looked into the rearview mirror at me again. "Thank you."
Tumblr media
We arrived at "home". During the long ride to the outskirts of Brooklyn, I learned that the blonde's name is Steve. He and Sam were Bucky's seconds in command. Steve helped with the dirty stuff like interrogations, and dealing with orders and shipments of weapons. Sam helped as well but he was also really good at chauffeuring Bucky wherever he needed to go.
There was a very very long gravel driveway leading up to Bucky's huge mansion. It was pretty, I had to admit. Nice dark brick with ivy, a beautiful garden that I bet Steve helped out with, and a peaceful fountain in the center of the drive. I noticed more fountains in the garden area. We had passed tall black iron gates on the way in, giving me an eerie feeling of what the interior of the mansion would be like. Probably dark and scary.
Boy, was I wrong. The inside was beautiful. White marble stairs, golden curtains and natural light everywhere. It felt soft and safe, while still looking professional and wealthy. I was scared to touch anything, it all looked so clean and like everything was in its place.
Bucky dismissed Sam and Steve, leading me up the stairs and to the right of the hall. We walked for quite a bit before he turned into a room. "This is yours. You are to sleep here and I will have all of your stuff here in the next two weeks." He turned to face me, "My office is down the hall to the left, first hall to your right. My room is down the hall to the right, first room on your left hand side. If you need anything, ask me, Sam or Steve. Nobody else lives here but the four of us." he sounded so calm and collected. Did he steal people often?
"I don't live here." I corrected him. The quirk in his eyebrow let me know I shouldn't have spoken. I didn't care. It couldn't get any worse than this. "You do live here. You will not leave this property until you ask me for permission and you have been assigned an escort." "I do not live here! You do not own me, and I am going home. I have to go to work, and I will not stay here." I clenched my jaw, waiting for him to say something.
"Y/n, you live here. Your father promised me his first born daughter just before your mother got pregnant. He was a horrible man, you knew that. Your mother never knew about the deal. You are mine and you will not be leaving. Are we clear?" I hated how the tone of his voice made me clench my thighs together, but I hated even more how he was speaking to me and how he thought he could just keep me here.
"No! I will not stay here! You stole me out of my OR while I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A SURGERY! An open heart surgery. A poor young girl's life was in my hands, Bucky!!!! You could have killed her!! She was INNOCENT!! I hate you. She could have died. Her parents have been in and out of hospitals with her for six years!! Six years, Bucky! She is six years old and her whole life has been within the walls of hospitals and I had a chance to change that. You could have ruined her life and I hate you." I was so angry, tears were running down my face again. I felt warm and exhausted. The urge to just sleep and hope this was a really really bad dream came over me. "Get out." I spat through my teeth, daring him to challenge my order.
He almost looked pitiful as he left my room and closed the door behind him.
Tumblr media
The bed was uncomfortable, and I had none of my own possessions. Bucky had come in later to apologize, which fell on deaf ears. He had thankfully given me one of his shirts and some sweatpants before he went back to his office. The sheets on the bed were scratchy, and his pants were too warm.
At around 2 a.m, after no luck at sleeping, I slipped out of my room and headed towards his office, just like he had directed. I figured he would be there, being a surgeon I know what it's like to stay up late to get work done, especially if you're stressed. Which I assume he was after kidnapping someone.
I opened the door slowly to reveal Bucky. His jacket was discarded and a few of the buttons on his shirt were undone. "What are you doing here?" He asked after looking up at me. I felt his gaze rake over my body, now only clad in his shirt and a pair of my underwear. "I need your help," I said calmly. I was desperate after only a few hours with this man. I felt pathetic.
Bucky's eyebrow quirked, encouraging me to continue. "My dog, Joe is probably watching her. I wouldn't know because you took my phone, but that's what I'm assuming." he looked intrigued, with his head tilted to the side and his hands still instead of typing. "If Joe isn't watching her, she only has enough food and water for one day, unless she drinks out of the toilet bowl, but I don't really want her to do that, not that it isn't clean! But she's a big dog and-" "y/n." His cold voice stopped me right in my tracks. Shit. This is probably where he refuses to help me get my dog.
"Please," my eyes began to water at the thought of her at home, all alone, wondering where I went, and then possibly starving to death without anyone to take care of her. "She's my best friend, and I promise she won't be any trouble, I'll pay for everything, I'll even pay a rent fee or something! I just really need my dog back." I think he could see my lip wobble because that look of pity from earlier came back.
"I used to have a dog," his voice surprised me just as much as his words. I looked up at him inquisitively, "She was a Great Dane named Nala. I get it. I'll arrange to pick her up tomorrow, and some of your things later in the week." "Thank you." I whispered before turning to leave his office.
"What's her name?" I heard just before I reached the door. "Hazel," I smiled at the memory of her. "She's an Irish wolf hound." I said sheepishly. at my confession, he smiled. "Goodnight y/n." "Goodnight Bucky."
Tumblr media
It's been a week since we got Hazel, and Bucky has seemed kinder and kinder every day. It was probably just because Hazel was such a good dog, but a part of me hoped I helped to make him happier too. When I brought it up to Steve and Sam they had both agreed it wasn't just my dog.
Another night rolled around and I still didn't have anything else of my own. I had been sharing clothes with all three of the men, including underwear. The night was the worst time for me, always leaving me frustrated at my inability to get comfortable enough to sleep. Hazel had no problems, sleeping soundly at the foot of my bed just like she would at home. Or my old house? Was this place really my home?
At 1 a.m, when I hadn't heard any movement in a while I snuck out to Bucky's bedroom where I knew he wouldn't be. He was still in his office working, I knew because I hadn't heard him walk to his room, something he doesn't usually do until at least 3 a.m. Hazel had decided to follow me, making this a bit harder to get away with when being followed by a huge Irish wolfhound.
Slowly, I opened the door to his bedroom. It was gorgeous. He had an abundance of pillows, a soft blanket at the end of his bed and thick creamy coloured duvet. Dark wood furniture decorated the room, complemented by dark curtains and hunter green walls. The place was gorgeous and very well decorated. I moved closer to his bed and found an extra soft blanket under the duvet. I slid it out and draped it over Hazel's back so my hands could hold other stuff. I grabbed a body length grey pillow, deciding he wouldn't miss it for one night.
Before he came to his room, we scurried back to my bed as quietly as possible, Hazel not dropping the blanket once.
Tumblr media
"That's the best she's slept in weeks, boss." I could hear voices outside of my bedroom. Steve. The curtains were closed, so it was still nice and dark in my room, then another voice spoke, "Really? She hasn't been sleeping well this whole time?". Bucky. "No, she tosses and turns all night. Honestly, I would too if I didn't have anything of my own.". Sam. "She likes your pillow though." Steve commented.
I didn't want to get up yet but I didn't want to be watched either. I slowly opened my eyes and lifted my head to see the three men in my doorway. Steve and Sam smiled before walking away with waves directed at me. I waved back before focusing my gaze on Bucky.
"I see you like my stuff." he smirked, slowly making his way towards my bed. Hazel jumped off to go find food, her bowls had been placed in the kitchen. "You know, it's wrong to steal sweetheart." Bucky was looking down at me now, his hands in the pockets of his neat dress pants. "You left me with no other choice," I said without much confidence.
"I don't have any of my things, and these sheets are god awful and scratchy." "Maybe I just like seeing you in my clothes," he hummed. A warm blush coated my cheeks as he leaned closer. "You're kinda cute sweetheart." At this point I could smell his minty breath, and feel it as well. "Give me my stuff, and you'll get yours back." I suggested before flopping down on my bed and pulling the covers over me, specifically the blanket I stole right off of his own bed.
He laughed before tugging at the blanket to reveal me clinging to his body sized pillow like a koala. I refused to meet his gaze, instead keeping my eyes closed. "I can't sleep unless I'm comfortable." I stated.
"I get that. We'll have Steve pick your stuff up, but you can keep the pillow." he winked.
Tumblr media
That afternoon, Bucky had sat down and had lunch with me. He made eggs, bacon and fluffy toast. I helped a little, making us tea and setting the plates at the black marble island.
"So, I was thinking, you can start working remotely until they absolutely need you back at the hospital." his eyes met mine, waiting for a reaction. I was excited, but I tried not to show it too much since I really shouldn't have been taken from the hospital in the first place. "Then, once I'm sure it's safe, you can go back."
"Safe?" How did my safety play into this decision? I was confused, I was always safe at the hospital, save for the occasional confused patient. "Y/n, your father had a lot of enemies, quite a few of them are associated with other mafias, none as well built or known as my own. He promised you to me in hopes that peace could be made, but he betrayed several of his promises and upset more people than he could handle. Because they can't get to your father, they might get to you next."
"Fine. But I need to get to the hospital sooner rather than later. I have a million patients and I've missed so many rounds. For all I know, Lena could be out of the hospital by now. I haven't had contact with anyone for weeks." I sighed, to which he frowned at. "I know, and I do feel bad but I also care about your safety."
I blushed at his admittance, not used to being romantically cared for. Over the days that turned into weeks, we had grown to like each other. Maybe this arrangement would end up working after all.
Tumblr media
"Fuck."
Bucky had given me a space to work within his office, so that's where I was when I heard a string of curses and muffled groans near midnight. The door suddenly swung open, revealing a bloody and battered Bucky.
"James?" I asked. "Hey -shit- y/n/n." He clutched his right arm to his abdomen. There was so much blood from so many different places. "It looks like you need my help," I sassed, getting up to help him settle down on the leather couch. His "yeah" was cut off by a groan. "I need to take your shirt off, okay?" Concern was surely painted on my face as I saw his blood soaked jacket.
"At least buy me dinner first," he laughed. "Ha ha. I'm glad you're in a decent mood," I said while starting to unbutton his white work shirt. I rolled up the sleeves of his black Henley that I was borrowing. He had three major wounds: one on his cheek, one on his right arm and one located on his lower abdomen.
"This is going to hurt," I warned, getting the first aid kit from across the room and preparing the peroxide. He hissed as I poured it over every wound, dabbing them after with gauze. "You're doing great," I tried to smile sympathetically while remaining focused.
"I'm going to stitch your face first, okay?" I asked, getting the supplies ready. "I don't need stitches." he countered. "Bucky, this wound is deep and it's not going to stop bleeding until I close it. You need stitches." "Doll, I'm fine, just leave it."
"Right! Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I forgot that you had a medical degree." I said sarcastically. He blushed in return and stayed still while I started to stitch his cheek.
A part of me wanted to make a jab about being out of practice, due to being kidnapped from the hospital, but I held back. Bucky was a good man and we were starting to bond and get along way better than I had ever anticipated. I learned that he had a sister, Steve had been his best friend since highschool, and he had inherited the mafia from his father.
James was a man who loved dogs, and making sure the ones he loved were safe, from his best friend all the way down to Anne, the maid and housekeeper. Another hiss pulled me from my thoughts. "Sorry," I winced. "Almost done."
"Thank you" he said after I patched each site with gauze and polysporin. "Anytime." "I guess we make more sense than I thought." he said as we sipped coffee in the kitchen. "How so?" I laughed. "A surgeon and a mafia boss. I could use you doll." He smiled. I tilted my head to the side in mock offense. " 's that all I am to you? A good pair of hands to tend to your messes, Mr. Barnes?" I asked. "No no no! I just mean that we make sense, you know?" I smiled at him over my mug. "I know."
He started leaning closer to me, to the point where I could feel his breath on my lips. Bucky's eyes met mine over the small table, his flesh hand coming up to cup my cheek, the other resting its cooler touch on my neck, pulling me in. I never fought once, instantly kissing him back when I felt his lips meet mine.
I sighed into the kiss, letting him hold my face and tip it back. His tongue caressed my lower lip before bringing it into his mouth, sucking on it tenderly. My hand moved to cover his flesh one, leaning into his touch slightly. He inhaled me as he pulled back. I felt my face flush and go warm and his hungry gaze, as if I was his prey and he wanted to devour me whole. "Bucky," I panted.
He smirked devilishly. "You like that, doll?" I nodded dumbly at his question. Bucky's eyes creased at the corners when he smiled, tilting his head down to look at me. "I like you," I whispered. He leaned closer, "I like you too, printessa."
Tumblr media
Over the weeks, I had started sharing Bucky's room with him. I had an abundance of plush blankets and soft pillows to cuddle with. He had started coming to bed earlier, and I have started back at the hospital. Joe and my other friends missed me while I was away, and I can guarantee that I missed them just as much, if not more. My Resident Chief and Chief of Surgery both cried when they saw me walk back into the hospital lobby, happy and unharmed.
Life was good again, and I finally felt peace.

Prologue? Pilot? IDK Man I Just Work Here
part 1.1
{hello and welcome to the very first chapter of the full house au. i know @moreover-clover and @redley-of-many-noodles offered to beta this fic for me; i appreciate that and i may very well take you up on it for later chapters, but tbh i have homework that really needs to get done and i will not be able to focus on anything else until i get this out of the way, so... hopefully its not terrible i guess. that said, i did initially start writing this in past tense and then decided to do it in present instead, so if anyone notices a typo/tense error, feel free to point it out so i can fix it lol
trigger warning for mentions of injuries and death
now without further ado...}
~~~
Stumbling past the automatic glass doors, covered in blood- but is it his own? Or does it belong to the barely conscious man he’s dragging along beside him?
Probably both.
The bright white lights overhead burn his eyes and the sharp sterile scent of chemicals does the same to his nose- this is not a pleasant place to be, but it’s the only place to be right now. It’s their only hope of not losing yet another person to this alternate dimension shit that’s been plaguing their lives for three years.
Seeing Eddie’s crumpled, torn-apart body in the Upside Down, watching Dustin sob over him- that had been bad enough. They may have had almost matching wounds, but Eddie’s were deeper, and there were twice as many of them, and, god, that could have been him, it should have been him.
Dustin’s devastated and the world is ending and we’ve lost someone else and dammit didn’t I tell him not to be a hero?
But then he’d found a pulse. The faintest flutter, but it was there, and it spurred him right back into action, adrenaline pumping overtime through his veins even as he was ready to collapse. Both of them might well be on death’s door, but they had hope.
And then, just as they made it back through the gate, they had gotten the call over the walkie about Max.
The panic and despair threatened to settle back over him, driving him into the ground with its weight. He had been trying so hard to keep her safe since they realized she was Vecna’s next target, and now…
They were supposed to meet up at the hospital, so that’s where he went. He has to see the kids and he has to keep Eddie breathing and maybe just maybe he’ll get a chance to get his own wounds looked at, if there’s time. Robin will never forgive him if he lets rabies take him out.
So he and Dustin have Eddie slung between them, barreling clumsily through the Hawkins ER like a lopsided bull in a proverbial china shop while everyone else stares on in confusion and horror at the state they’re in. If anyone recognizes the fallen king or the target of the ongoing manhunt, they don’t say anything, and for that one tiny thing in the long and awful list of what’s happened today, he’s grateful.
There are, however, voices aimed in his direction, lilted up at the end in interrogation, but he can’t afford to think right now; he can only keep moving forward, giving weakly shouted answers to questions that go in one ear and out the other. His mind is clouded with fear and the desperation to get all his important people back together in one room so he can see that they’re all still alive. If they aren’t, if someone is missing, if Max doesn’t make it, if no one will treat Eddie-
He’s vaguely aware that he’s begging at this point, but he doesn’t care. His brain is too busy listing.
Robin, Nancy, Erica, Lucas- they’re together, they’re with Max. The Byers are all the way in California; Mike is probably on his way back right now- what a mess to come home to. Dustin- he’s with me. Safe. Eddie- also with me, not safe, probably dying.
They may not have known each other long, but he does feel tears prick his eyes at the thought- they had literally marched into hell together, after all. A nurse offers him a tissue- when did they get here? When did he sit down? And why is the room spinning like the Starcourt ceiling last July?
He doesn’t get an answer to any of his questions, doesn’t even get to voice them, before the room is going dark and Dustin’s frantic voice at his side is sounding further and further away, until everything goes quiet.
~~~
The silence is broken by a harsh ringing noise, followed by muffled voices, the latter growing clearer as the former slowly fades out. He knows those voices.
He jolts upright, sending a sharp trail of pain through his lacerated torso, but is momentarily distracted by the fact that he had somehow wound up in a hospital bed between blacking out and waking up. As soon as his mind catches up to speed on his new whereabouts, he looks wildly around the room- not exactly a typical hospital room, but that hasn’t registered yet- taking stock of every face he can see, every voice he can hear.
To his immense relief- and also confusion- he sees Max in a bed just like his right across from him, Lucas and El at her side. She’s in bad shape, but she appears to be alive, at least.
Thank god. Wait- El? What is she doing here?
The next thing he sees is the entire Byers family- plus two extra guys, one of whom looks familiar but way paler and thinner and more beaten up than Steve remembers- squeezed onto a couch at the far end of the room.
Weren’t they in California? And- hold on- is that Hopper? Isn’t he dead?
Wait.
Am I dead?
Before he can have an existential crisis, though, something snaps him out of it. A hand on his shoulder, rougher than he would have liked, to be honest, but grounding. Dustin- who he realizes must have been sleeping in the chair between him and the next bed over- has just woken up in time to catch him doing the same, and the kid looks thrilled. Exhausted, emotionally drained, but thrilled.
“Steve! Guys, he’s awake!”
All eyes turn his way, just about everyone accounted for, it seems, and somewhere in the back of his mind he wonders how Robin and all the kids got here with their usual chauffer currently out of action. But then he notices something else. Something that honestly shouldn’t be as startling as it is, considering everything else going on.
All the parents are here too. And they look… well, about how they can be expected to look, given the circumstances.
“Good, I’m glad you’re alright,” says Karen Wheeler, arms crossed over her chest, menacing gaze sweeping the room. “Because my son came home in the back of a pizza van, begging us to take him to the hospital, where apparently you and two of his other friends have been half-dead all night in the middle of these so-called ‘earthquakes,’ and I’d really like an explanation. From all of you.”
~~~
The room was dead silent, the parents staring in wide-eyed shock as the long-winded, traumatic narrative drew to a close.
“So… I guess you guys need some time to process all that, huh?”
Dustin’s question was met with a sudden cacophony of returning inquiries, sharp and frantic and tinged with bewilderment, overlapping one another in their haste. It was hard to tell who said what through the haze of whatever painkillers they put in his IV.
“How the hell did we not know about any of this?”
“Hawkins is cursed?”
“Why didn’t any of you say anything?”
“All this has been going on under our noses for years?”
He had been expecting disbelief, accusations of letting their imaginations run away from them, but… their tale connects a few too many dots, makes a little too much sense, considering how strange and malevolent life has become in their formerly sleepy little town.
“Are- are you guys- mad?” Will asks, even though he, out of all of them, has the least to worry about.
Before any of them could answer, Mike jumps in, “Because, if you are, that’s really not fair, we’ve sorta been through a lot as it is-”
“And that’s exactly why we’re mad- no- furious. Our kids have been going through hell right in front of us and we had no idea! Of course we’re going to be upset about it! You guys could have died, and we would have had no idea what happened!”
“Well, yeah, I guess, but- we didn’t. We’re fine, mom…”
“You are absolutely not fine. After everything you just told us about? There’s no way you could possibly be fine. This whole thing is so far outside the realm of fine.”
There’s a heavy pause after that; it’s not like anyone can disagree with her. When no response comes, she turns her fierce, teary eyes on the older teens.
“What about you guys? You- Steve, Jonathan, Nancy- you’ve known about all this the whole time! Why didn’t you tell us? Why didn’t you come to us for help?” It sounds like an accusation, and yet… there’s more pain in her voice than anything. Her targets wince, crumple, while Robin and Argyle- whoever that is- just sort of awkwardly shuffle about off to the side, none of them meeting Mrs. Wheeler’s gaze.
It's Joyce who ends up breaking the tense silence.
“In their defense, Karen, Hop and I knew about all this too. The thing is- we weren’t allowed to tell anyone.”
Having become one of her anger’s new targets, Hopper quickly explains, “The Hawkins lab freaks made us sign a bunch of NDAs, take a vow of silence on the whole matter, basically. It was the only way to get them to cooperate. If we had gone around telling people, we could’ve put everyone in even more danger. And besides, before now, would you have even believed us? If we had told you there were monsters like something out of a sci-fi movie hunting folks down, taking over minds, opening portals to another dimension- right in the middle of Hawkins?”
“Would you have believed your kids?” Joyce adds softly, addressing all her fellow moms in the room.
At that, Karen deflates. She exchanges a look with Sue and Claudia, and speaks for all of them when she says, “I… I guess not. I want to say I would have, but… it’s all too crazy. If we hadn’t seen what we saw today, and if you all didn’t have each other backing up your story, well… honestly, I would have thought you were making it up.” Apparently the Wheelers had almost driven right into one of the rifts- one of the very obviously otherworldly rifts- on their way here. Well, they had to find out somehow.
“And that’s another reason we couldn’t tell you. We didn’t want you to think we were crazy,” Nancy explains.
Lucas tacks on, “We also didn’t want you to send El back to the lab, or to any other messed up place that would lock her up and hurt her.”
El nods seriously, a fearful expression flashing across her face as she takes a step back, bumping into Max's bed. Lucas places a reassuring hand- the one not occupied with holding Max's- on her shoulder.
“Oh- honey, no, we would never do that. Don’t worry. We actually owe you a lot, it sounds like; I can’t thank you enough for saving my children’s lives. You’ll always be safe with us, as far as I’m concerned.”
“But that’s the thing,” Susan interjects, not taking her watery eyes off her comatose daughter. “They’re not safe, none of them are, not here. And they haven’t been for a long time, it seems. I don’t know when they will be safe. I hate to say it, but I don’t think our kids should stay in Hawkins.”
This triggers a rush of protests from the kids, voices once again blending in a way that’s difficult for Steve to keep up with.
“But- but Hawkins needs us! Now more than ever!”
“Yeah! We have to stay and fight!”
“We can’t just let Vecna have our town!”
Hopper motions for everyone to settle down. “Listen, kids. I know you want to help, but you’ve been fighting this battle for too long as it is. You all never should have been involved in something so dangerous in the first place.”
“Right, what he said. I mean, you’re just kids, for god’s sake!” Claudia adds in, although she still looks mostly stunned by everything she’s just found out about.
“This is not your responsibility. We’ll stay here and fight, and you all will get somewhere safe, somewhere far away from all this.”
This does indeed sound like a direct order from their returned-from-the-dead resident chief of police. What comes next, though, is much gentler, fatherly, and he’s definitely looking right at El when he says it.
“Let us take it from here, okay?”
Invisible String | Werewolf AU | Raul Mendes
Raul is a werewolf and his mate turned out not only to be human, but his best friend's little sister. And as much as he tried, he could not ignore that invisible string tying her to him.
Hello hello! This is a bit of an experimental thing and I'm really excited about it, I've always been highly interested in everything about alternative universe and fantasy in general, and ever since I received the first ask to write a werewolf piece I've been wanting to do it but also a bit nervous. So hopefully this meets your expectations and you guys like it! Let me know if this was any good and if you guys would like to see something else like this!
*Word Count: 8K+;
*Warnings: a few curse words, a little angsty (i guess), minor drinking;
*Posted: March 28th, 2021.
                                               -*-
Raul felt like life liked playing sick little tricks on him.
Like the fact that werewolves had a very strict hierarchy and normally it worked nicely. The Alphas are the ones in charge and responsible for keeping the pack safe and in order. Betas normally were kind of the strength of the pack, trained to listen and do whatever the pack needed and physically skilled to fight off anyone. And the Omegas were the glue to all of it, the sweet and naturally more caring ones, and it was an ancient thing that was followed to this day. Until Raul and his twin brothers were all born Alphas. It was hard informing the pack that they’re all going to be the Alphas of their pack. And since normally it was only allowed one wolf to claim that position, it was harder to make older ones respect their decision and actually accept, but at the end of the day, they didn’t have much of a choice. The Alpha genes ran in the Mendes family for generations and thankfully their dynamic was actually great and the triplets formed a great group of wolves.
And that was just an example of the things Raul blames on fate or whatever for making his like a bit more difficult. But maybe the hardest one was having mated with not only a human, but his Beta’s younger sister. His best friend’s and right hand’s sister, one of the only girls that was off limits had to be his mate.
And it wasn’t even his choice. Mating is a common thing between werewolves and other creatures, often seen as a blessing, a reason to celebrate. It’s similar to what most people have as a soulmate. It’s two souls that were meant to be together and are deeply connected to the other. Sometimes it’s harder to notice, it can take a few years and sometimes it’s almost instantaneous, and it can’t be undone or ignored. And even though sometimes it can be denied by one of the sides, according to the ones who’ve been through it, it’s an awfully painful experience. Some even go as far as describing having a piece of you being pulled out of your heart.
It also doesn’t have to be necessarily tied to a romantic relationship, you can simply be friends with them for the rest of your lives, even though it doesn’t happen most of the time. Most of the time it isn’t even something to think about, it just feels natural, you feel whole when you’re around that person, they’re meant to be your other half and normally it just clicks. And when you grow up surrounded by wolves, it’s normally a beautiful connection to witness. Raul always found their parents relationship amazing, and deep down longed for a similar deep relationship with someone, finding his mate and falling in love. He just didn’t expect it to happen the way it did.
It was over four years ago and he was running a bit late to Mike’s, his best friend, nineteenth birthday he was having at his parents’ house. Raul got caught up sorting through some pack stuff and when he was finally done with it, he was already half an hour late and it was outside their little secluded “neighborhood” in the wooded area. It was a bit far from the town so the wolves wouldn’t have a problem with the humans since their existence was still a secret. Only very few and selected humans knew about them. So it was best for everybody if they built their little community on the woods just beside the town, and keep their presence among humans only when seen necessary.
Mike’s father, who is a werewolf, fell in love with a human (Mike’s mom) and they decided to move into town to be closer to her job since she was a nurse and needed to be near the hospital in case of an emergency. And when Mike was born a wolf, they decided that he was going to be raised like his dad was in the wolf community and would make his decision in joining it or not when he was older. And he did choose the pack life since it felt more natural to him. But Y/N, his younger sister, was actually born a human and was raised by his parents like any human kid, and she was never taken to their community since she was three years younger than her brother and Mike was very protective over her, not knowing how his pack would treat her or react to her.
So when Raul parked his car right outside the address that was sent to him and ringed the bell, he wasn’t expecting to be met with his mate. But there she was, Y/N stood with the door open as her eyes widened the slightest bit and he was sure he wasn’t breathing. He felt like he was floating and her sweet scent of something like Roses and Strawberries was all he could feel. All his other senses were clouded by her presence just a few inches away from him. He didn’t know how to react or what to say, and for the first time in his life he was completely speechless. Raul was normally a very socially skilled person, he was good at talking to people and reading someone’s expressions like a book, always had a sharp answer at the tip of his tongue and knew what to do at most situations, but Y/N caught him off guard.
She seemed a bit confused as well. Her mouth slightly a gape as she held to the wooden doorframe.  Y/N was really happy she was finally meeting all of her brother’s friends and getting to know a bit more of this part of his life she was deprived of. And she was a bit shocked to notice how big and strong all of his friends were, specially Shawn and Peter, who Mike explained to be the Alphas. They were also incredibly nice to her, she suspects it was her brother’s doing since every time they would say something or curse, they would always look at Mike first. But when the doorbell rang again, she knew it was Raul, he was the only one missing and they knew he was late due to “pack stuff” as they explained. She felt a bit jittery and basically ran to the door from the spot she was sitting next to it on her phone, wanting to get to know her brother’s best friend for a while now. But she wasn’t prepared to meet him.
Sure, he was identical to his twins, but there was something different about him that hit her hard. Of course, he had more tattoos and a few more piercings, he looked a bit rougher in the edges with his leather jacket and wild golden eyes, but there was something that wasn’t about his appearance that took her breath away. And suddenly she didn’t know what to do, they’re both stuck in their place staring at each other. And even though her mind was screaming at her to stop being awkward, invite him in and actually act like a decent being, Y/N couldn’t move a muscle, and he’s probably thinking she’s an idiot and too polite to invite himself in. And in the middle of her internal turmoil, he regained some self control for the sake of both of them.
Raul cleared his throat shaking his head a bit “Hi, I’m Raul, you must be Y/N” he said and she swore she melted at the sound of his voice “it’s really nice finally meeting you”
He offered his hand to her to which she swiftly grabbed, feeling his warmth seeping throughout her palm, his fingers curling around her much smaller ones. He had a beautiful design tattooed on the back of his hand and she got a little lost in it.
Y/N sighed relief he broke the awkward moment and looked up back at him, trying to control her thoughts “Yeah, that’s me, nice to meet you too, would you like to come in?”
Raul smiled as he let go of her hand a bit reluctantly “sure” was all he said as he stepped in closer to her, being hit with a fresh wave of her sweet scent, forcing him to take a deep breath.
“The boys are outside in case you’re wondering” she said placing a strand of hair that fell out of her little updo behind her ear.
Raul held back the urge to do it himself “Oh, so they annoyed you into staying in the living room?”
“No no” her eyes almost budged out of their socket “I was just- I was just waiting for you since I knew you were running late and they’re all talking, so I didn’t want to intrude and I-“
“Y/N it’s just a joke” he said through a chuckle as he saw her face flushing “relax a bit, honey”
Y/N giggled softly as she closed the door “I’m sorry, I-“
“Hey, dude!” Mike called from across the room, making their heads snap towards him “how’s everything back home?”
“All settled” Raul said taking a step closer to his Beta “just arrived actually”
“Oh, so you met my little sister” and even though it seemed like a normal sentence, Raul knew Mike and knew his posture like the back of his hand, he knew this was a reminder of the conversation they had back home about staying away from her.
“Yeah, she opened the door for me” he said and from his peripheral he saw Y/N nodding confirming his line.
“I see, the guys are outside, let’s go grab a burger for you” Mike said patting him on the shoulder and dragging him away from the front door where Y/N seemed to be frozen in place.
Raul remembers vividly every little second of that night. Remembers how he decided he should keep his distance for the sake of his friendship and for Y/N herself. She was only sixteen when they met and she is human, which means the bond isn’t too strong for her, specially at first glance, and dating a werewolf was hard. He lived far into the woods and didn’t necessarily mingle with people in town, who were probably her friends and she wasn’t raised with his type, so maybe it would be too much for her. And Raul’s sure Mike wouldn’t be happy about it, at least not now where they first met and she’s that young. So he kept his distance, only talking to her when extremely necessary.
And that was a pattern he kept for the remaining four years of their limited interactions (which he intended keeping that way).
As older as Y/N got, the closest she got with the pack. She was always close to Mike, but since she was young she wasn’t allowed to walk or drive alone to the community, but as soon as she was old enough she was always around on the weekends and important dates. And she was just lovely, so everyone adored her, always wanting to have her around for monthly movie nights and even going as far as inviting her to spend the night. Raul couldn’t really blame anyone for wanting her around, he did too, but he couldn’t, so he didn’t say a thing about it. And he knew he made her hesitant on accepting those invitations, cause at every attempt she ever made to get closer to him, he shut her off. And he could see Y/N was hurt, but it was for the best.
He even tried dating someone else for a while  and he noticed Y/N didn’t like it even the tiniest bit. The girl he was dating was a Beta that was temporarily living with them as her pack solved something around the area, and she was nice. But it didn’t last long, she was only staying for a few months, and on the day she left, there was a barbecue in celebration to one of the older wolves and of course Y/N was there. Raul was late since he was taking his ex to the airport, and Y/N didn’t even look at him when he stepped into the little location they were all settled. He found the act odd but didn’t say a word, only walking towards his brother’s and Mike who were laughing probably about something dumb one of them said. Raul spent a few minutes with them, but he kept looking over his shoulder where Y/N was sat, noticing after an hour she was missing and he instantly started trying to find her.
He dismissed his friends as he walked into the pack house, trying to clear his senses to track her in case she was hurt (since she was a bit wobbly on her feet already), but only to be met with her staring at her phone while sitting on the couch with a huge pout set on her lips. Raul was about to turn and leave when Y/N looked up, noticing his presence and he swears his heart stopped at that moment. She had tears filling her eyes and her lips were trembling slightly, a deep frown set on her brows.
“I’m sorry, I know I shouldn’t be here” she mumbled sniffling softly “I just needed to clear my head a bit”
Raul nodded with softer eyes as he walked closer to her “it’s okay, are you hurt? Are you in pain?”
Y/N shook her head “I honestly don’t know why I’m so upset, I didn’t even drink that much or anything, I just-“ she sighed heavily and looked up at the celling.
“Tired?” Raul offered gently and she nodded her head slowly “want me to drive you home?”
“No, please, just go enjoy the night, isn’t Samantha here?” she said as he sat down beside her, still keeping some distance.
“We broke up, she left today” was all he said and she looked up at him with wide eyes, but before she could start apologizing, he just pressed his hand to her knee gently “it’s okay, it wasn’t anything serious, no need to apologize, sweetheart”
“I- okay”
“Still wanna stay?” he pressed gently “I can still take you home”
“No, it’s okay, I was supposed to spend the night anyway” she shrugged.
“Wanna go upstairs and take a nap?” was all he asked and she shook her head.
“The thing is I was supposed to stay at Stacy’s room tonight, but her boyfriend showed up, so I guess I got the living room” she explained “which is totally okay, and I don’t want to seem ungrateful, I know you don’t like me much, and I don’t want to make things worse”
And at that his heart shattered “wait, what?”
“Oh no, I really don’t mind, I can call a cab too, I can leave in twenty minutes too, I’m sorry I-“ she started breathing a bit heavily as he picked up her heart racing more than usual.
Raul shook his head, turning on the couch to face her better “No, it’s not that, I’m not mad at you or anything, I just- who said I don’t like you?”
“I- no one” she opened her mouth a few times before closing it until she said something that shattered his heart in a billion pieces “no one, it’s just something I’ve noticed throughout the years”
“What do you mean?”
Y/N sighed deeply as she glanced down at her lap, fidgeting the bracelet she always wore, which Raul caught on a long time ago to be a nervous habit “I know you get uncomfortable when I’m around and Mike told me it was probably something about you not being used to have humans around, and I totally get it, it’s just sometimes it seems like my presence is enough to put you in a sour mood and I don’t think it’s because I’m human or anything, and I shouldn’t be saying this to you, I’m sorry”
Raul took a deep breath as he squeezed her knee gently and seeing her relax a bit at his touch “stop apologizing for everything, you did nothing wrong, sweetheart, well, besides assuming I disliked you”
“Oh” was all she managed out as her brain ran a million mile per hour.
Y/N has had a crush on him for years now, ever since the first time they met. He was the literal description of her type, but the dreamy part ended there. Of course Raul was always polite and never made anything to directly hurt her, but he kept pushing her away and avoiding her like the plague, and maybe it was all in her head, but he didn’t seem like that whenever he was around others. And that did nothing to help her case. She knew nothing would ever happen between them, he made it pretty obvious he wasn’t attracted to her, but she’d like to try and be friends with him but even that didn’t seem to interest him. And it wasn’t his fault, she didn’t even knew the reason as to why she felt the need to have him around, but she just did. So Y/N just lost hope after all the attempts to make him like her, but he was always so distant and it still affected her after all this years.
In the other hand, Y/N had no idea how hard it was to push her away. Raul was certain she knew exactly what to do to get to his heart, she had to. Every little thing she did made his heart flutter and she was just so good at having people wrapped around her fingers that she made her way through all of his friends lives. He thought they were mates at first glance, her scent was a great clue, but as they got to know each other better, even indirectly, just made him sure of it. Y/N meant much more than what he thought was possible, seeing her stressed over school stuff or sad about whatever reason was enough to put him in panic, not knowing how to keep his distance and stop her from hurting. And all his cold exterior wasn’t necessarily his choice, he knew Mike confessed he hoped his sister would not get with an Alpha, that meant she would have to give up a few things in her life and that would herself in danger for having Raul’s scent all over her. And Mike also told him he would do whatever he could to avoid that to keep her safe.
So he did it for her, to keep her safe from the problems that came along with living in a pack, dating a werewolf and being a human. But it was getting harder, and tonight he decided to ignore it, that she needed him more than she needed to stay away from him. And that’s what pushed him to wrap his fingers around her wrist, making her look up at him
“Do you want to watch a movie or something?” he offered in a lower voice “maybe it will help you clear your head a bit” and Y/N seemed a bit shook, looking up at him with wide eyes and she nodded slowly.
Raul smiled fondly at her as he got up with her following him up the stairs to the little movie room the pack out together for movie nights. They sat down side by side as he offered her to pick something for them, then Raul proceeded to reach for a fluffy blanket that was thrown on the corner of the sofa. When he turned back to her she still looked a bit lost, so he offered to put on a show he knew was her favorite, and she just nodded in response. Y/N was too nervous to do anything wrong that would push him back into being his closed off distant self, and she knew she looked ridiculous all tense and barely breathing by his side.
Raul noticed her stiffness right away and decided to turn off the lights hoping this would make her relax even a little bit. And as the episode progressed he noticed she was getting more and more loose. An hour later, in the middle of the second episode, he felt her leaning closer to him, probably searching for a bit more warmth, so he lifted his arm to rest on the back of the couch and to make room for her in case she wanted. It only took a couple more minutes for her to be basically leaning most of her weight on him, and when her arm slipped, she fell mostly laying on his chest. And as soon as Y/N was ready to start apologizing, Raul shushed her softly, asking her to relax and pulling the covers up both of their bodies, and so she did.
He didn’t notice he was falling asleep until he woke up many hours later with the sound of voices downstairs from his brothers. Raul looked down at his chest to find Y/N cuddled to him, sound asleep as his arm wrapped around her waist held her still. He took a deep breath and almost chose not to wake her and just go back to sleep, to deal with the stiffness due to the sitting position he held and the consequences of sleeping there with her in the morning. At least until he heard the door cracking open slowly and Shawn’s head popping in.
“Are you two okay?” his brother whispered as he noticed the girl asleep on the couch, and to that Raul nodded in response, afraid to wake her up “take her upstairs to your room, dude, Mike will find out you like her sooner or later and he’ll deal with it, just don’t let her sleep on the couch”
Raul sighed and nodded. Shawn bid his goodnight and closed the door with a soft click. Peter, Shawn and his mom were the only ones to know about his mating situation, and he liked it better that way. They tried convincing him to tell her at least, but they understood that maybe it wasn’t the right time just yet and let him decide what to do with his feelings.
So he ended up taking his brothers suggestion and as gently as he could, he rearranged the girl in his arms to he could carry her upstairs to his bedroom. Y/N grumbled softly in protest, nuzzling her face further on his neck as she quieted down. Raul had to stop himself from cooing at her. As he walked out into the bright hallway she mumbled something unintelligible before calling his name.
“It’s okay, sweetheart, I’m here, it’s just me” he whispered as they walked into his room, before placing a kiss to her hair, gently lowering her to his mattress.
Y/N slowly opened her eyes “Raul? I’m sorry, I fell asleep on you” she mumbled quietly.
“It’s okay, just thought a bed would be a better place for you to sleep other than the couch” he said standing up to his full height and bringing the covers up her body “that’s why I brought you to my room”
“Thank you” she said grabbing his hand and he just nodded at her with a gentle grin on his lips “why are you up?”
“I’m going to crash downstairs on the movie room” he stated caressing the back of her hand with his thumb and she started shaking her hand.
Her hold on him tightened “No, not a chance, I’m not taking you out of your bed for you to sleep on the couch, please stay here with me, please”
And how could he possibly say no to her looking so sleepy and so sweet?
He breathed a chuckle with a nod “just let me change first, do you need a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt instead of what you’re wearing?”
“Yes please” she murmured feeling a bit embarrassed for making him do all of this for her.
And as if he could read his mind “Don’t look at me as if you’re being a headache, yeah? It’s okay, sweetheart, let me just grab you some clothes” he squeezed her hand before letting go of it in favor of picking up what he promised.
He came back from his closet in only a pair of sweats and a thin white t-shirt, a similar paring folded in his hands for her. She got up to change on his bathroom as he climbed on his bed, trying to contain the excitement of the prospect of having the girl he’s been fond of for over two years, the possible love of his life. Y/N quickly returned in his clothes, following suit and diving under the covers, laying on her side away from him as he stayed on his back, trying to control his breathing after turning off the lights. A few minutes passed and he’s sure she was asleep, the room dark enough so he could only see the silhouette of her body by the faint glow of the moon seeping through his curtains. But then he heard the soft rustle of his sheets as she turned to face him, and he only turned his face on the pillow to properly look at her.
“Can I ask you something?” she whispered almost as if she was afraid to break the comfortable silence that fell over them.
Raul hummed in response “anything you want” his voice a soft and raspy tone, making her shiver slightly.
“Why are you being so nice to me?” her voice barely audible as if she was nervous to ask, or maybe the answer frightened her more.
“You don’t have to worry about it, you should just rest for now” was his response and she sighed in defeat, nodding her head before facing him away again.
The clear defeat on her features, despite the darkness was enough to make him regret his words. So Raul turned on his hand, raising a careful hand to caress her exposed bicep. She flinched at first, not expecting his touch, but quickly relaxing to it as he felt goosebumps raise on her skin. He decided to scoot a bit closer almost as if he were testing the waters and she shuffled closer in response. Soon the hand on her arm slid to wrap her waist gently and Y/N sighed happily in return, finally resting her back on his chest. Raul placed a kiss at the top of her head as she melted under his sweet gesture.
When she was in transition to dreamland, she swears she heard him whisper into her hair, the place he decided to muzzle his face “I’m sorry I made you think I disliked you, Y/N that’s not the case at all” he took a deep breath and she was far to gone to say anything back “You just seemed like you needed me tonight, and I’m sorry if I ever made you think your presence here was unwanted, you’re just too good and I don’t deserve you, sweetheart”
And not knowing if this was true or not, his whispered confessions with that slightly raspy and almost honeyed at the same time voice lulled her completely to sleep.
                                              -*-
In the weeks prior to that event, neither of them said a thing about that night, not even in an indirect way. Raul barely spoke to his brothers about it, but they already knew what happened, and Y/N didn’t feel like telling Mike would be a genius idea, so she decided against it. And to her disappointment things got back to the old normal, at least for the most part. She felt like Raul was a bit more comfortable around her and didn’t try so much to stay away, but it wasn’t like that day, and it still hunts her that she actually caught a small glimpse of what their relationship could be. But it was also taking its tool on him, that night he slept like a baby and allowed himself to daydream that this could’ve been their reality if things were a bit different.
He woke up that morning pretty early as usual, for his perimeter check, but only this time Y/N was sound asleep on his chest, and maybe he stalled a bit to enjoy her sweet scent a bit more before slowly peeling her off of him and gently laying her back down on the pillows. There was only a bit of resistance in form of a whine but she ended up pulling his pillow to her chest before settling down. It was harder than he thought leaving her on his bed as he quickly changed and jogged downstairs to go on his run, but maybe it was better like this, this way he could run and put his head at ease and actually come up with his next moves. So that’s what Raul did, but as soon as he was back on the house, already in two feet only, she was already wake and preparing something in the kitchen as she chatted with Peter.
Raul leaned on the doorway as he watched her, back on the clothes from last night, talking about her next college project as his brother sipped on his coffee mug, so he cleared his throat not to scare her as he walked in “good morning”
“Morning, Raul, can you keep her company as she eats her breakfast? I actually need to run to Sam’s house to pick up some stuff before he leaves for work” Peter asked, a knowing look on his face as Raul just shrugged it off “thanks, got to go, Y/N, good luck with that sheet!” his brother said before leaving the kitchen completely.
“Hi” she said, eyes trained on the eggs she was making as he stood beside her, his hip leaning on the kitchen counter “would you like some?”
“Sure” he said looking around the room “did you sleep well?”
Y/N’s body visibly stiffened as she cleared her throat before answering “yeah, thank you about last night, by the way”
Raul nodded before changing the subject and seeing her relax at that, knowing it was for the best, mentally deleting the speech he came up with. And that’s where the whole conversation died.
                                              -*-
Months later Raul found himself in an equally as hard situation.
Y/N was spending the weekend at the pack house that was a bit more empty than usual, since a few of the wolves (including Mike) decided to go on a little getaway to run from the cold that was arriving sooner than expected, and since her parents were out of town, his best friend asked if she could stay with them so Y/N wouldn’t be all by herself for four days during the possibility of a storm that was estimated for that weekend. And of course they couldn’t deny it, specially since she was very sweet and everyone loved her.
And tonight was the second night of her in the house and Raul was pacing back and forth on his room, probably about to open a hole on the floor from pacing too much, but he didn’t know what to do. She was downstairs on the living room working on some sort of paper for college and he decided he was going to bed, but as soon as he reached his room, the storm that was expected to happen finally arrived and he literally heard her heart rate speeding up exponentially, but didn’t know how to approach her or even if he should. However, when he heard her curse under her breath when a lightning lit up the whole house he knew he could not do nothing, so he opened the door to his room and basically ran down the stairs.
As Raul reached the bottom of the stairs, he identified Y/N to be the little ball wrapped up in a fluffy  blanket in the middle of the couch. He took a deep breath before carefully walking towards her, he tried making enough noise so she wouldn’t get caught off guard but not enough to disturb her. But as soon as he reached the side of the couch she looked up at him with wide teared eyes from the little cocoon of blankets she was. Raul physically stopped himself from cooing at her and pulling her to his lap.
Y/N gave him a little sad laugh as she rubbed her eyes harshly “I’m sorry we always end up meeting like this, I must seem like an idiot, right?”
Raul shook his head sitting down beside her “You’re not an idiot, what’s making you so upset?”
She took a deep breath before answering “I guess I’m just tired, and this paper is a bit harder than I thought and I’m actually a bit afraid of storms, and this is all stupid and I-“
“Hey, it’s not stupid, it’s stressful and it’s okay, no one really like storms, they’re dangerous and pretty scary”
“Sure, when you’re five” she said playfully rolling her eyes as he chuckled softly.
“Oh, darling, you know that’s not true”
“Are you scared of storms?” she asked with an arched brow.
“No”
“See?”
Raul chuckled as he shook his head “you’re really something, aren’t you?”
Y/N shrugged as she saved the document before moving to the book she was using as reference “Why are you up if you’re not scared then?”
“You are”
Y/N turned her head in his direction “Oh, I didn’t mean to wake you up”
“You didn’t, I just knew you were afraid and decided to come check on you” he said already regretting admitting to it.
“Oh, I’m sorry, you didn’t have to come though, I’m a big girl, I can take it”
Raul gave her his signature lopsided smile that she had only seen a few times directed to her, making her insides a bit toastier than before “I know you can, sweetheart, just didn’t want you to be alone if I could come down and try to help”
“Yeah, that’s the Alpha spirit, right?” and with that sentence Raul rested his head on the back of the sofa with a laugh.
“Maybe” Raul turned his head to face her, deciding he was going to ignore the whole ‘pushing her away’ speech, at least for a moment “I was thinking that maybe we should make some hot chocolates if you want to finish this paper tonight”
“Are you serious?” Y/N had to confirm she wasn’t going mad and that he was actually willingly wanting to spend some time with her.
“Of course I’m serious, you can’t joke about stuff like this”
“What? Hot chocolate?” she asked holding back a laugh.
“Well obviously” he pushed himself up from the couch, relieved to see she seemed distracted enough to forget about the whole weather outside “I’m aces in the kitchen”
Raul offered her his hand and she smiled at him shaking her head before closing her computer and pushing it aside, taking his outstretched hand and letting him pull her up carefully “well, how did I just find that out?”
“Because I’m normally too tired and busy most of the time to actually make a meal”
She noticed he didn’t let go of her, and she wasn’t going to be the one to do it or point that out “oh yeah, being the Alpha and bossing everyone around must take a lot of your time and energy”
Raul chuckled as he walked her to the kitchen, letting go of her hand against his will in favor of grabbing the ingredients “Mike’s a bad influence, I bet his the one who told you that”
“You certainly didn’t, we barely talk at all” and as soon as the words left her mouth she regretted it.
Raul was with his back facing her as he sorted through the stuff to prepare their drinks, and she was ready to start apologizing, afraid he was going to push her out all over again. Why did she have to go and say something like that? As much as the mood between them was playful, mostly cause he was trying to distract her and she knew it, but it was light and fun, she had to say such thing and ruin it. Sometimes things felt so natural with him that she just forgets that they aren’t that close. But before she could freak out and start spitting strings of ‘I’m sorry’ he did something Y/N wasn’t expecting. Raul started laughing out loud, turning to face her and she ended up laughing as well, maybe out of nervousness or out of relief, either way she laughed.
“I deserved that” he pointed out “but I guess that will have to change since you have such a distorted vision of the Alpha role”
“I wouldn’t particularly mind” she added softly, in hopes he wouldn’t pay much attention to it, but again, Raul was, apparently, a little box of surprises.
“Me neither, darling” he said before turning on the stove.
Y/N felt heat rising up her chest to her face and decided to clear her throat before changing subjects “Who taught you how to cook? Shawn’s a mess in the kitchen, Peter’s good but I know he took lessons”
“I guess I just learned from watching my mom, when I was little I used to spend a lot of my time in the kitchen with her whenever she was using it, my grandma too, and I guess I somehow absorbed that”
“Oh, they’re good?” Y/N took a tentative step closer to him, eager to learn about him and taking the opportunity of his sudden interest in spending time with her to milk all the information she could.
“My mom’s good, but my nan is just fantastic, she told me she used to sit on the counter by her father and watch him, and I guess I did the same”
“Well, I guess I’ll have to do the same cause my kitchen experience resumes to making toast, sandwiches and eggs” she said and he looked at her from the corner of his eye as if he was pondering.
“Then do it, I don’t mind a little audience” he said and she giggled, hoping on the counter beside where he stood.
And that’s how they spent most of their night, with light chatter and a bit of healthy teasing going around and they were ecstatic about it. Y/N felt like she was finally able to relax after all the stress and she felt weirdly complete, almost as if before she was missing a piece. And Raul, he was over the fucking moon and already regretting keeping her away for that long, avoiding every type of contact with her and he was almost telling Mike to piss himself and ignoring all this stupid made up rules he made. He sat down by Y/N’s side as he helped her finish her paper and he was actually able to, finishing it in less than twenty minutes, so they just sat down side by side talking about random stuff, until he noticed she was starting to get sleepier and sleepier with every passing minute.
“You should go to bed, sweetheart” he pointed as she was basically leaning her weight on his side, not that he minded, but they got really close really fast
“Already trying to get rid of me?” she joked and he laughed despite being afraid that was something she actually believed in, and maybe that’s what drove him to ask her what he did next.
“Never, and if you’re still a bit nervous about the rain you can sleep in my room, I can always take the couch”
“I can’t kick you out of your bed” she said looking up at him
“You’re not kicking me out, I’m inviting you and offering to stay elsewhere”
Y/N shook her head “I don’t mind sharing if you do”
Raul didn’t expect it, but he also wasn’t mad about it “If you really don’t mind, then yeah”
“Okay, I’m ready for bed if you are” she said grabbing her stuff.
Raul nodded as he helped her to carry her school material up to his room, which he placed on top of his dresser before turning around to face her standing awkwardly in the middle of his bedroom.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
“Hmm, nothing I just-“ she mumbled as he chuckled.
Raul stopped by the end of his bed “I can still take the couch if you’re uncomfortable”
“It’s not that, you don’t make me uncomfortable” she said as she walked up to him “I don’t know what it is, I just feel safe around you, is it weird?”
Raul was not expecting it as he looked down at her “No, not at all, you can climb on the bed, darling” he offered as he did the same on his side.
She ended up taking up on his offer and laying down on the other side, pulling the covers up her body “you can be really sweet when you want to, you know?” she mumbled softly after a while, after the lights were already off and the only source of light in the room was coming from the lamp on his bedside table.
Raul said turning to face her, only to find Y/N already on her side facing him “Don’t think many think the same”
Y/N laughed and shook her head “guess you’re just good at pretending you’re this big bad Alpha when you’re just a big softie”
Raul laughed throwing his head back and she couldn’t stop herself from admiring the sound, his neck and his beautiful face, looking a lot more soft than normally.
“I really like your laugh” she blurted out before she could think.
His laugh was cut short when he realized her words and he smiled at her “I like yours, wish I could hear it more often”
“Well, it’s not really hard to get me to laugh”
Raul smiled at her “yeah, hm- I wanted to apologize”
“For what?” she asked, genuine curiosity shining on her eyes.
“For being a dick to you, for such a long time, there’s not an excuse for that, as much as I tried to come up with one” he finally admitted running his hands through his curls.
Y/N bit her lower lip as she looked at him “you’re never a dick to me, you’re a bit closed off, yeah, but never a dick, you never made me feel uncomfortable or anything like that, and ever since that night where you made it clear you didn’t dislike me, a few things started making more sense to me”
“Like what?” it was his turn to get confused.
She sighed heavily “I thought for a very long time you just hated my guts or didn’t want me near for being a human or an outsider, but then you said it wasn’t the case and you were so sweet to me that night, and the morning after, and ever since that day, even though you weren’t necessarily cuddling with me and being around me all the time, you were slowly opening up, spending more time around me when I was here and at first I was confused, but then yesterday I was talking to Peter and he may or may not have told me this was something to do with Mike”
“What?” Raul almost sat up, but he didn’t want her to stop talking, so he held back his impulse and just kept laying down.
“And I also talked to my mom about it, very recently, and she said my dad had a similar reaction to her when he found out they’re mates… I’m not implying anything, and I can be totally wrong about it, but I thought about it for a second and I swear it made sense, it explained why I felt so drawn to you since I first laid eyes on you” she admitted, coiling into herself a bit.
Raul was completely taken back, not knowing what to do or what to say, not expecting her to come into realization and not knowing how to proceed, that until she mumbled a soft “please say something, anything, just don’t shut me off again”
“No, darling, it’s not that, I’m sorry” he said reaching for her hand as grabbing it in his “I’m just speechless, I- you feel it too?”
“Is it true?”
“I- yes” he sighed in relief.
“You’re my mate?! Or I’m yours, I’m sorry, I don’t know how this works” she giggled nervously.
Raul couldn’t stop his smile to blossom on his lips as he nodded his head what felt like a thousand times “whatever you want, I don’t mind”
“So what does that mean now?” she said shuffling closer to him.
“It doesn’t have to mean anything, I know your brother wouldn’t appreciate the idea and I don’t want to hurt you or cause any pain, darling, I just want what’s best for you” Raul said squeezing her hand gently.
“You could never hurt me, and I don’t honestly care about what Mike thinks right now” she said placing a hand on his chest “what do you want?”
“Honestly?” he asked and she nodded eagerly, which made him chuckle “you, in any way you’ll have me, but I also don’t want to rush you into anything, this works differently for me since I’m a wolf”
“Yeah, I know how sensitive you guys can be” she joked and he laughed, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead “but I want you, I feel the pull to have you near me almost as a need”
“I know, sweetheart, I feel the same way” Raul admitted pulling her closer by her waist “just don’t want to skip any steps with you, but I kept you away long enough”
Y/N nodded tipping her head back to look at his beautiful face better, their noses brushing due to the proximity “agreed, but I still want you close”
“We’re already close, darling” he breathed a chuckled and she shook her head.
“Are you afraid of kissing me? What are you? Twelve?” she teased and he laughed, pressing a kiss to the tip of her nose.
“Of course not” he whispered leaning a bit closer.
“Then what’s taking you so long?”
“Bossy little thing” he teased one more time before closing the space between them in a gentle kiss.
Y/N tangled her fingers in his wild curls as he cupped her jaw carefully, afraid that if he squeezed her even a tiniest bit she was going to disappear. But his gentle touches soon turned into a bit more urgent ones and she pulled his hair, encouraging him to deepen the kiss. Raul tighten his hand on her waist, trapping her bottom lip between his teeth, pulling it to him softly before lessening the sting with a swipe of his tongue. And unfortunately Y/N had to pull away too soon for her liking due to her stupid lungs needing oxygen. Raul leaned in to press a bunch of soft, barely there, kisses all over her face.
She giggled a bit breathlessly as she murmured “Mike will murder me when he finds out”
“Shh, we can worry about that when he’s back, he’ll have to get over it eventually”
Y/N giggled before leaning in for one more kiss.
“Okay, love, we really should sleep, and then tomorrow I can maybe take you on a date if you want” he said pressing a chaste kiss to her lips before resting his forehead on hers.
Y/N smiled up at him “Or we can have a little movie marathon here and you’ll make me dinner”
Raul laughed “you’re a mean one, you know that?”
“Why?”
“Because you know I can’t say no to you” he said and she smiled at him.
“Good boy, you’re such a good puppy” Y/N teased and he laughed.
Raul shook his head “okay, it’s definitely time for you to go to bed”
What do you mike’s ideal way to propose to his s/o is?
OK so i couldn't answer this straight away, but there was just alot floating in my head. He would do it like this (there's four au's under the cut)
Canonverse Miche (assuming that he survived Zeke and is forced to retire like Jean Havoc from FMAB) falls in love with the nurse taking care of him or the family with a private hospital's daughter. But because he's a scout and they have bad reputations, readers family is against them.
In Canon verse, miche would ask his s/o to elope with him tobhis village and live a quiet life.
Actor Au Miche would win an award for 'best supporting actor' for his death in season 2. His s/o, who's not an actor is at home watching the live broadcast. He comes home to a very delicious dinner, with the table all set pretty. (Maybe his s/onis wearing lingerie underneath)
And the trophy is in his hand, giving it to s/o to have a better look at it.
S/o then notices that there's a ring that stands out on the trophy, and takes a closer look. While Miche is already on his knee behind her.
Painter/ artist AU Miche would be so in love, super in love that he dedicates his latest exhibition to paintings of his s/o looking ethereal. All of the pictures or the displays would be of her looking away or having her attention somewhere.
But when it gets to the end of the exhibit, there's a huge painting where it's their lives before meeting each other. In the middle is a mix of colours with no subject. Because the subject is him, kneeling on the floor proposing to her. (Spoiler alert* this is in my latest collab piece)
Athele Miche (remember the boxer and hockey players ones) would spontaneously ask s/o out. Because, see, in a world where he's away training or playing in competitions, and is surrounded by people, he wants a person to call home. After a month of dating he just looks at s/o and says
"I want to call you my wife,"
Because I headcanon athelet Miche to be so sure with life.
Musician Miche would write a song to his s/o, but not the type of entertainer to propose on stage. He's a private person no matter the AU. Instead on the day he releases his album, he gives a special copy to his s/o where at the very end of the cd's photo book there's a ring sitting there. With the lyrics of the first song he's ever written.
Maybe like: 'I knew that when I looked at you, I was going to marry you'
Newsies ghosts au i came up with while watching BBC Ghosts (and crying because yes lesbian wedding)
urm this is a ghosts au to tw for mentions of death
its all below the cut as it is quite long
Davey is looking for an apartment as he’s looking to move out of his parent’s house
While searching for apartments he gets the news a distant relative has died and that he’s gained ownership of their house
The house is big
Like very big
And davey being an almost broke college student considers selling the house
Sarah talks him out of it and convinces him to move into the house
Davey moves in and literally just uses like 3-5 rooms as otherwise his bills would explode
After a while he notices some strange things that keep happening
Lights flickering
Objects being moved
The usually ghost haunting stuff
Davey attempts to ignore all this and reasons with himself that his mind is just playing tricks on him
That doesn't stop him from being uneasy about it all
This goes on for about a year
Davey decides to renovent the house
Firstly he sorts the rooms he does use
He notices all the ghost shit starts happening more
He also starts tripping up more
He finishes up those rooms with help from his family and friends
He moves on to do the 1st floor living room
One day him and Sarah are working on the room - Davey’s cleaning the windows
and checking which ones frames need to be changed because of rot while Sarah is sticking down tape ready for painting
While Davey is doing one of the windows facing the driveway something pushes him out
He falls the two stories and miraculously doesn’t die
But he comes close to dying
Sarah call the ambulance
Davey wakes up in the hospital
Beside him is Esther as well as 2 doctors and a nurse
Esther notices Davey’s waking up and tells him she's off to get a doctor
This confuses Davey as there's literally 2 doctors and a nurse already in the room
He tells Esther that there’s already 2 doctors in the room
Esther looks at him funny, tells him “There’s no doctors in here” or something along them lines, kives Davey a kiss and leaves the room
The nurse tells hims “No point telling them ‘about us mate we’re dead and they can’t see us”
Davey and the ghosts have a conversation which is just Davey questioning weather he’s dead, the ghosts telling him no and that he just came close to death and can now see ghosts
They also tell him that this isn’t the first time this has happened
Davey spends some time in the hospital before he can go home
Esther and Mayer take Davey back to theirs where he stays for a couple weeks before going back to the house
Davey considered selling the house again as he decided a bit ago it was definitely haunted and seeing as he can now see ghosts he doesn’t want to meet ones in his house
He decides not to as the ghosts may not be all that bad
After a week of living back home again he decides the ghosts are bad
The ghosts in the house include:
Jack Kelly
Katherine Plumber/Pulitzer
Crutchie
Race
Spot
Kid Blink
Mush
Boots
Specs
Romeo
Albert
Finch
Elmer
Henry
Tommy Boy
Mike
Ike
Jojo
Buttons
Smalls
Skittery
so like most of the manhatten newsies and Spot
also heres a google do of how they died but its pretty heavy so tws for: death, stabbing, illness, injuries/wounds, burning, drowning, getting shot, overdosing, being beaten, racism, poison, animal attacks, anti-semitism, homophobia, su*cide, abuse, starvation
Wherever You Will Go
Summary: She was a coffee stained, shitstorm of crumpled paper whose idiosyncrasies surprisingly complimented his well. She opened his eyes to the beautifully cruel world they lived in, and he found himself never wanting to leave her side.
Even when they were separated far apart.
A levihan modern AU in which their entire story together plays out as Hange’s life is left hanging in the balance after a fatal car crash.
Chapter 3/? (Ao3 link here)
Chapter One // Chapter Two
Notes: Thank you to @tundrainafrica for helping me proofread this chapter! You’re awesome and I really appreciate it <3
It was fortunate -- incredibly fortunate, that Levi Ackerman had his fair share of misfortunes. If that weren’t the case, then perhaps he would have found himself in a similar position as her.
He had a better reign on his emotions than most people. However, that didn’t stop him from running a red light in an empty street. It didn’t stop him from gripping the sides of the steering wheel, knuckles almost white as paper. It most certainly did not stop him from exceeding the speed limit -- just by a few fractions.
And of course, it didn’t stop the tears that were pooling, ever so slowly, behind his eyes.
The hospital was twenty minutes away from his apartment. He had made it in ten.
He didn’t remember stopping the car. He couldn’t remember, for the life of him, parking and shutting the door. He didn’t remember running -- running as fast as he could to the wide, gray building. What he did remember, what he so painfully remembered, however, were his last words to her.
It had been such a simple conflict. A simple conflict with such a simple solution.
He ran past patients and doctors and took the staircase instead of the elevator, climbing two steps at a time. Erwin had told him which floor he had to get to but didn’t elaborate on the details of the accident. All he knew was that it was a car crash. And that it was bad.
The fluorescent lights were unforgiving. The white walls were screaming. The cool, vinyl flooring was endless. His feet pounded against them, body narrowly avoiding the faceless.
The object felt heavier in his pocket with every step he took. He almost forgot it was there with him. But now, it rattled and shook and taunted him with his failure. He wanted nothing more than to throw it away, forget it existed, and so that maybe, just maybe, the argument wouldn’t have ever happened.
He sprinted, head throbbing. Adrenaline never ceasing. Not even when he found him.
Dress in a long-sleeved shirt and slacks with blonde hair slightly ruffled, Erwin Smith had seen better days. He looked as though he had abruptly woken up in the middle of the night and had hastily thrown on clothes without a second thought. All of which, he had, of course. Levi had never seen him so clearly unfocused and uncollected. Another slap to his face.
Standing next to him was a man with the same predicament, but was handling the situation in a vastly different way.
With shoulders incredibly stiff, he had still managed to make multiple and outlandish gestures with his arms. His voice, both stressed and fearful, desperately fired question after question towards the doctor who stood impassively in front of them.
He only stopped when he noticed Levi fast approaching.
It was then Levi witnessed yet another thing he had never thought would happen in his life.
He felt a large fist connect to his right cheek, knocking over his balance which made him stagger to the floor. He could have gotten up and retaliated faster if he hadn’t been so shocked at what just happened.
“What did you do?” Moblit Berner growled slowly, his cold, hazel eyes sneering down at him. Levi’s eyes narrowed in surprise and embarrassment as he tentatively touched his cheek. The curses and exclamations he was so used to delivering died down in his throat when he saw the tears pooling in those hazel eyes. The same eyes that pleaded with him to keep her safe. From the same person who protected her countless times. He was about to grab Levi by the collar when Erwin finally intervened, firmly placing a hand on the man’s arm.
“Moblit.” Erwin said in his usual authoritative tone as he regarded Levi blankly, “Don’t.”
Levi carefully rose from his position. Never in his life did he feel as much terror as he did at that very moment. It had nothing to do with Moblit Berner, but rather, the implications of his actions. The implications of his anger. He wanted to ask, no, demand the answers to the questions forming in his head. What happened? Why was he so angry? He barely spoke to Moblit, but he knew that under any normal circumstances, he wouldn’t be capable of doing such a thing -- especially to Levi out of all people.
However, for some reason, all of those questions had clogged in his throat, refusing to come out of his mouth. It was a terrible defense mechanism, really.
Ignoring the stares of those faceless around them, he placed a hand against the wall to help balance himself. His gray eyes sharing the same intensity as those hazel ones.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Berner, but I’m going to have to ask you to step out of the building,” the doctor spoke up firmly, causing Moblit to tear his gaze away from Levi, “I know we’re all feeling very emotional right now, but I cannot allow you to cause any more disturbances.”
Moblit’s face hardened as he shook off Erwin’s hold on him. The people who had witnessed the scene slowly started dispersing and going about their own business. Levi had to admit, if they had been in a completely different situation, he’d consider Moblit’s actions to be rather impressive. No one could ever get away with what he had just done.
Which caused another shiver of terror to run down his spine.
“I understand.” Moblit said, even though his tone indicated that he didn’t, “But before I do, I want your complete assurance that you will double-check all her head injuries.”
“Rest assured, Mr. Berner, my attendings know what they’re doing,” the doctor said carefully. It was clear she was done with this argument but had no choice but to retain her professionalism, “I understand your concerns, and I’m telling you that they have aptly looked at all of the patient’s injuries and are doing their best to stop and prevent any more bleeding.”
Moblit didn’t look all too convinced about that statement, and before he could argue, even more, Levi finally found his voice.
“What exactly happe--”
He wasn’t able to finish his sentence as Moblit tackled him to the ground, knocking the wind from his lungs and pinning his shoulders.
“You happened! If you hadn’t argued with her, maybe she wouldn’t have wrapped herself around a tree goddamnit!” Moblit heaved, his eyes red. Ignoring the gasps and protests of those around him, he continued: “You killed her! You could have stopped her! You’ll go to hell for this.”
“We’ll discuss this tomorrow,” Hange said angrily, her figure already by the door as she threw on her jacket. “Maybe you wouldn’t have a stick up your ass by then.”
“What’s so wrong with wanting to go with you?” Levi gritted his teeth, eyes narrowed as he crossed his arms. The hurt he felt was seeping into his voice. “It won’t be a problem for me. Unless there’s another reason why you’re doing this--”
“I just want what’s best for you! Can’t you see that? We’ll still be together--”
“You don’t understand!” Levi argued. But he was wrong. He knew Hange did understand, and as much as he didn’t like it, Levi understood where she was coming from as well. But how could he tell her that as much as he understood, he still wanted to go wherever she went? To be by her side always?
Hange opened the door with surprising calmness, a contrast to her emotions. “We’ll figure it out in the morning,” she said in a clipped tone. Their eyes didn’t meet as she walked out the door. “Later, Levi.”
He didn’t even feel the man’s punches. He barely comprehended how Moblit was pulled away from him and escorted outside by a man in a security uniform. He didn’t remember Erwin grabbing his hand and pulling him up, forcing him to sit on a chair in the hallway. He didn’t even notice how the doctor knelt at his level, asking him questions about things he couldn’t hear. The angry words uttered to him that night successfully numbed his senses, and he felt as though he was no longer living, but rather, just existing.
“He’ll need some ice for his cheeks,” the doctor said as she rose, facing Erwin. “I’ll let the nurses know. I think it’d also be best to call any other remaining family and friends for support. We will update you once the surgery is over, and the police should come soon with a much more detailed report of the accident.”
“Thank you,” Erwin said, nodding as he shook the woman’s hand. “We appreciate it.” he pursed his lips and shook his head, “I’m very sorry about the actions of my friend. This was all too sudden for us.”
The woman nodded in understanding, glancing at Levi briefly. “I assure you, everyone is doing their absolute best to make sure the patient comes out fine. We do have the best there is. In the meantime, all we can do is wait and support one another. Now, if you excuse me, Mr. Smith.”
She made her way past them and disappeared at the end of the hall, leaving the two tense men alone.
Erwin stared at her disappearing figure before sighing. He rubbed his temples and took out his phone, pressing it next to his ear. After a couple of seconds, he spoke up: “Sorry to have woken you up, but you and Nanaba need to get to the hospital now. It’s Hange.” Erwin’s tone was a little more relaxed -- just by a tiny fraction, compared to his tone earlier with Levi. However, it still displayed the same sense of fear and urgency. “I’ll explain more later, but she got into a car crash around an hour ago. No, wait -- Mike -- calm down. She’s still fine. She’s in surgery right now.”
He ran a finger through his messy hair as he listened to the other end of the receiver. “Yeah, Levi and Moblit are already here. You’ll probably see Moblit outside -- there was some conflict and -- yeah, actually, that’d be great. I don’t know how long it’ll take but we’ll probably be here until the morning. Yeah, okay. Drive safe.”
After he ended the call and slipped his phone back into his pocket, he finally looked down at Levi. The latter still didn’t move, choosing to stare at the wall in front of him instead.
“She almost did,” Erwin said as if reading his mind. He sat next to his friend and crossed his arms, staring at the wall as well, “It happened around a little after twelve. She didn’t see the other vehicle until it was directly in front of her. She swerved just in time but,” Erwin paused, choosing his words yet again despite being known for his eloquence, “almost cut off a tree with the force of her impact. According to Moblit, the best we can hope for now is that she goes into a coma. The worst is brain death. Even death itself is a little more merciful than that if I’m being completely honest.”
“Later, Hange.” he spitted out after she shut the door behind her. He took out the object from his pocket and slammed it on the coffee table in frustration. He swiftly went to the kitchen and grabbed his cleaning supplies from under the sink and started scrubbing every single surface he laid his eyes on.
Stupid four-eyes, he thought as he scrubbed violently. Don’t you realize that I’m the happiest when I’m with you? Wherever you’ll go, I’ll follow.
Hange Zoe was life itself. She was the breath of fresh air he didn’t realize he needed. She was the force that turned his life upside down and taught him how to live. He didn’t want to, but he found himself clinging onto that rope of hope, the hope that she was still alive. All they needed to do was fix the brokenness he caused, and he’d be there, welcoming her back into the world with open arms whether she wanted to or not.
But he remembered, oh why did he remember now?
He saw her kind eyes and her soft raven hair. He saw how she desperately held him close in her frail arms that night, whispering how it would all be okay, how she’d always be with him no matter what. As if, as if she already knew what was going to happen to her.
He was a child, back then. He didn’t understand what she had meant. All he knew was that his mother was sad and that he wanted to take that pain away from her. He wanted to see her beautiful smile and hear her laugh. She held him tight as she closed her eyes, and he stared a little longer at her sleeping face -- not doubting her words that everything would be okay.
He woke up the next morning. She didn’t.
He finally met Erwin’s eyes. Those blue orbs held an overwhelming amount of emotions -- from fear to disbelief and even to anger -- but there was one thing that had tied them all together. And Levi hated it.
It was resignation.
“She’ll be fine,” Levi whispered, no, declared. Erwin studied him carefully, and although he didn’t look too convinced, he nodded. “I hope so.”
He tore his gaze away from his old friend as a nurse approached him and handed him an ice pack. He grasped the object in his hands, letting the cold numb his fingers even more. It flashed back to him -- those hazel eyes and those cruel words. Hange was still alive. She was still in surgery. She was stable. But why, why did everyone around him act like she was already dead?
You killed her. You’ll go to hell for this.
“Why…” Levi choked out, his voice unrecognizable. “Why did..?”
“Why weren’t you called first? Why Moblit was so...” Erwin trailed off, pursing his lips. He let out a scoff and shook his head. “It was because Moblit had been on the phone with her when it happened,” he breathed in deeply, those blue eyes meeting his gray ones once again, “He had heard everything.”
(1/1 I 3,601 I General)
Stiles does not work his Omega ass off to attract frat boy Alphas. Absolutely not. He’s at college to get his degree. If he’s crushing on an Alpha who never crosses the lines of propriety, well, no one needs to know, right?
CSI: Beacon Hills by Jerakeen
(1/1 I 8,243 I Teen)
Back when Stiles was in high school Beacon Hills didn’t have a crime lab, because they simply didn’t need one. Those were the days.
Throw Me to the Wolves by skoosiepants
(1/1 I 13,493 I Teen)
He feels the physical embodiment of devastated, his already too strung-out mind struggling to wall up all the hurt, the rejection—he takes a deep shuddering breath and looks down at the shredded skin on his arms, at the sluggish way they’re weakly healing.
There is nothing, nothing he wants more than to have Derek sweep in and make everything all better. He should have known, though, that something like that would never happen to him.
OR -
Stiles accidentally gets bitten, and everything goes to hell.
Weave Soft Spells Over My Sight by AgnesBlue
(2/2 I 51,424 I Mature)
Derek had blossomed steadily over the past year, growing into his ears and turning even more handsome, if that were possible. But instead of going out and melting the panties off the girls, suddenly he was coming to Stiles all bashed in, demanding that he patch him up like Stiles was some freelance nurse. It was a familiar pattern by now.
AU in which Stiles has been living with the Hales for a few years as their assistant and friend. He needs to deal with Derek, who keeps coming to Stiles with bruises and cuts to be treated, while trying to figure out what the elderly alpha of the Hale pack is up to.
Regular Joe by tugela54
(9/9 I 54,612 I Explicit)
Meet a mysterious, drop-dead gorgeous stranger (that has a peculiar yet endearing infatuation with wolves) have the best sex of your life, and then fall in love with him.
That is what you do on your summer vacation in the idyllic Florida keys… Right?
Blood is (Not) Thicker Than Water by Anxiety_Baker02
(13/13 I 78,000 I Teen)
Stiles hasn’t seen his extended family in years- mostly because they’re assholes. His cousins bully him relentlessly, and his aunts and uncles aren’t much better. So when he hears that they’re coming out for a family reunion, he’s understandably upset. He knows the next week is going to be hell, and it’s made worse when a new pack shows up, vowing revenge on their pack.
Also, Sterek happens.
Something Rotten by HappyJuicyfruit
(5/5 I 78,762 I Mature I Rape)
Dammit, this was another reason he hated walking around a big city at night, he always managed to catch glimpses of the dark underbelly. He turned around, planning on going the long way home, but he froze when he heard the voice-
“Let me take you home,” a man said.
“That will cost you more. I get the money before we leave, and I take another hit at your place before we do anything.” Another man slurred.
That voice. It sounded like- Derek’s feet were moving him towards the men before he could think.
“Stiles?”
Can’t rely on me by Littleredridinghunter
(12/12 I 116,206 I Not Rated)
Set at the end of season 2, Gerard beats Stiles up, but it’s a lot worse than anyone knows.
The pack let him down, that’s not really a surprise lately.
When Danny finds Stiles nearly bleeding to death the next day it’s the start of a beautiful friendship.
Can the pack make amends before it’s too late? Will Stiles ever forgive them for not being there for him when he needed them the most?
Bruises and Bitemarks by orphan_account
(27/27 I 121,566 I Explicit)
Biologically, Stiles is weak. When he presented as an omega, he knew that to be the truth but that never stopped him from running his mouth as a defense mechanism. However, it could only save him so many times before he ended up pissing off the wrong person. After he’s attacked in the parking lot outside of school, Stiles realizes he can no longer protect himself with just pure wit and sarcasm. When the attack lands him in the hospital, his dad forces him to pick between two options, report the alphas who attacked him or join a kickboxing gym run by omega rights activist and alpha, Derek Hale, a man Stiles has been in love with for many years.
Stiles is a struggling author barely making ends meet.
Derek is a successful architect whose biological clock is ticking.
Enter a surrogacy agency, two packs, and a particularly sticky and toe curling heat week and you get a match made in heaven.
What Fresh Twilight Bullshit Is This? by isthatbloodonhisshirt (wasterella)
“I am not Bella!” he insisted, shaking his fist angrily at Jackson, as if he’d been the one to suggest he was. “I am not Bella! I am, like, a Jacob, at least!”
Lydia made a noise of debate from his right and he whipped around to look at her.
“What?! What was that sound?!”
“You’re more of a Mike,” she insisted, shrugging neatly and flipping some curls over her shoulder.
“Wha—” Stiles had never been so offended in his life! “I am not! No way! I am a solid Jacob!”
“Mike,” she argued.
“Who’s Mike?” Scott asked.
“Shut up, Scott!” Stiles insisted, pointing a finger at him but still glaring at Lydia.
Big Hero 6/OUAT AU
Okay guys--so I worked this whole big AU up in my head while I was at work today, inspired by @honeyxmonkey ‘s Tangled the series OUAT AU and @greensword101 ‘s accompanying ask to me about Fred finding Hiro and giving him a hug once the curse was broken! Now, sadly I think I accidentally left my page of notes at work, or else they’re just lost somewhere in my bag, but I’m going to type of everything that I remember and hope for the best--here we go!
Backstory of how everyone got dragged into the curse: So I’m not even going to try to go into weird multi-versey type shit and try to be detailed with this but what you need to know is that Fred/Tadashi and Honey Lemon/Gogo are the main ships here, and Fred’s mom/Gogo’s parents are not happy about this, like at all. I have this headcanon that Gogo’s parents, while not as wealthy as Fred’s parents, are pretty well off (business owners? doctors? I’ll leave it up to your imagination) and are not at all happy with Gogo’s lifestyle choices/were probably emotionally and psychologically if not physically abusive to her, which is why as soon as she could she ran away to live with Honey Lemon’s family, and she and Honey Lemon eventually got together. Definitely not the match her parents wanted for her and they’re still mad that she wasn’t this perfect feminine daughter that they wanted. Fred’s mom is kind of the same way but mostly she’s just homophobic as shit and also wanted to marry Fred off to some rich girl like her and Fred’s dad’s parents did to the two of them. When it came down to choosing, Fred’s dad chose his son over her and divorced her, so she’s pissed because of that.
Moving forward before this gets too long: Long story short, Gogo’s parents and Fred’s mom kind of knew each other from moving in the same social circles and when they somehow find out about the curse (which wasn’t going to hit most of San Fransokyo, if at all) they either go to Regina or (more likely) Rumpelstiltskin and make a deal so that they can get not only themselves and their families pulled into this other world where they can have the lives that they wanted, but also pull in the friends and other people who encouraged Gogo and Fred to be themselves and “punish” them for what they did.
Characters Involved and Their Lives After the Curse:
Fred (new name: George): Engaged to Gogo (a match set up by his mom and Gogo’s parents), his dad in the cursed world doesn’t even fight his mom on things so he had no one to teach him to fight for himself and so he’s just sort of letting life get away from him and hiding in his fantasy stories and comics to escape reality.
Gogo (Edith): Engaged to Fred, never actually rebelled and never ran away from home so while she’s still got her fighting spirit on the inside it’s mostly been stamped out and she spends her days going to social events she hates and acting like she’s the perfect daughter she isn’t.
Honey Lemon (Heather): Works in an overly busy dress shop trying to earn money for college but is so underpaid she barely makes rent, let alone being able to save anything. She does all the tailoring on Gogo’s dresses and other clothes, including working on the wedding dress (which Gogo’s mom is never happy with, she’s probably made fifty dresses by now.) She and Gogo are secretly having a bit of a relationship (fitting rooms = closed doors and privacy with limited clothes for at least a short period of time) but no one can know. (More on the relationship below.)
Wasabi (Darnell): Honey Lemon’s roommate. Also trying to earn money for college (also failing at it), he works cleaning Fred’s family’s house--he’s great at the job because he’s so detail and cleanliness oriented, but he hates being around any germs, and the biggest part of the curse for him is having to clean Fred’s room.
Hiro (Nico): Hiro is a foster kid being “raised” by a horrible man named Montel (a.k.a. Yama) who forces Hiro into stealing things for him to “pay his keep” (and Hiro has the scars to show what happens if he disappoints him.)
Aunt Cass (Rachel): Works as the cook of Fred’s family, Fred’s mother delights in ordering her to make ridiculously elaborate and detailed meals, whether they have company or not, and then criticizing every part of them. Rachel would probably leave except she has a young son, Max, to look after and she can’t afford losing a job and having him taken away from her. (Red herring name alert: Max is actually a human version of Mochi, but if I ever turn this into an actual story it will be fun to throw people a bit off the trail! Also the reason Fred’s mom pulled Aunt Cass into this is because she felt Aunt Cass encouraged Tadashi and Fred to get together, being bi herself, and so she has an especial and very misplaced hatred for her.)
Tadashi (Shiro): Tadashi was found on the outskirts of town unconscious and covered in horrific burn scars. No one new his name except a few letters on a very decayed medical alert bracelet that looked a bit like Shiro (Tadashi Hamada--the “H” and “a” were pretty smeared kind of looked like “r” and “o”, the rest were completely illegible, so they guessed a bit on his name.) He was put in the hospital and put into a medically induced coma while he continued healing. When Emma came to town and time started moving again, Tadashi recovered enough for them to wake him up, but he has no memory of who he was or who his family was, and as his burns were still very severe and had gotten infected he’s still in the hospital for a very long time. (Explanation for Tadashi being alive: back in BH 6 world Fred’s dad, being a superhero, rescued Tadashi but since Tadashi was in such bad condition was still trying to get him back to being stable before letting anyone know that he was alive in case he didn’t make it. Fred’s mom did not count on this being a factor when she made the deal!)
Baymax (Mike): Baymax is a nurse in the hospital where Tadashi is being kept--in Once Upon a Time fashion, he did become human once in our world (I imagine his appearance being a lot like Aziraphale’s, only his irises are dark brown/almost black.) Another glitch in the curse (this time a literal one): even though Baymax’s memories were changed/rewritten for the curse, as a robot his system had backup storage for his memories. Robot brain being combined with a human brain was not quite compatible, so Baymax still talks/moves a bit like a robot which means a lot of people make fun of him for that, but more importantly, while he doesn’t remember everything, Baymax does have flashes of memories from the other world, and somewhat remembers being a robot. Of course anyone he tries to explain this to acts like he’s crazy so he’s learned to keep it to himself, but needless to say he feels a very strong connection to his patient, Shiro (who he at least on some level realizes is probably Tadashi), and is very, very protective of him.
(This started getting long so actual story development below the cut!)
Story Ideas:
-Fred and Gogo, while resigned to their eventual marriage,are still both incredibly gay in spite of being forced into the closet, so their general secret arrangement is that they’ll be married for their parents’ sake but both are free to privately have lovers or partners (as long as their parents don’t find out about it.) Gogo’s first choice, of course, is Honey Lemon. Honey Lemon is totally in love with Gogo, but she’s torn as to whether she’d truly be happy spending her life as someone’s mistress and not truly married to someone she loves.
-Fred and Hiro meet for the first time when Fred catches Hiro breaking into his room, having been sent by Yama to loot the house. Fred almost calls security, but he sees how skinny Hiro is and how beat up he is and takes pity on him. He wants to call CPS but Hiro begs him not to, afraid of being sent to an even worse home (he has curse memories of being in even worse homes to keep him from ever leaving Yama.) Fred would gladly try to take Hiro in himself but he’s too afraid of what his mother would say. So instead he and Hiro make a deal--any time that Hiro wants to, he can come by the house, and Fred will provide him with money or whatever else he needs to take back to Yama to avoid getting in trouble, and then Hiro gets to secretly spend a few hours with Fred, playing video games, reading comics, doing all the fun kid stuff he never gets to do at home--and of course Aunt Cass makes it her mission to make sure that Hiro always gets at least one good meal while he’s there, even though she doesn’t understand why it hurts so much to see this teenager she doesn’t even know leave to go back to his foster home.
-Hiro and Baymax meet when Hiro’s class goes to the hospital to help decorate it for the patients (remember when Henry went and met “John Doe”? Same visit, even though Hiro is of course in a different, older class and also probably in a different wing of the hospital.) Baymax sees Hiro and, with his glitchy memories of the other world, remembers Hiro, but unfortunately Hiro is only freaked out by this stranger calling him Hiro (”My name is Niko!”) and acting like he knows him. Finally Baymax has to give up on that. Still, he “conveniently” sends Hiro to decorate the room of a sleeping patient in the burn unit. Hiro is grumbling about how stupid all of this is, how decorating a room won’t really help anyone, when he hears a voice saying, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is a waste.” He turns around to realize that the sleeping patient has woken up.
The patient introduces himself as Shiro, and even though Hiro feels weird talking to this guy who’s mostly covered in bandages, somehow they end up talking all the same, and Hiro finds himself spilling his whole life story to Shiro, who turns out to be a great listener. When Hiro’s teacher tells him it’s time to leave, Hiro finds he actually doesn’t want to go! But Tadashi asks him to wait for a moment, and then pulls a small bag of gummy bears out from a bag by his bed, saying, “Here. My nurse brought these for me and I was saving them for later, but I think you need them more than me.” Which almost makes Hiro cry because he loves gummy bears but he can’t even remember the last time that he had them. (A.K.A. Hasn’t had them since being sent here by the curse.) He promises to come back to visit Tadashi as soon as he can, and he makes good on that promise. He and Tadashi can’t do a lot for each other, but they always find ways to do small things, like how Tadashi will always save the desserts from his meals to share with (or more often give to) Hiro, and Hiro will check out books from the library that he thinks Tadashi would like and reads to him. “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is a waste” becomes their motto.
-Hiro, spending time with both Fred and Tadashi, and having started seeing both of them as older brother/almost dad figures, plus eventually finding out that they’re both gay, starts dreaming of a life where Tadashi heals enough to leave the hospital, then meets and gets together with Fred, and the two of them adopt Hiro and they all live their happily ever after together. Hiro never manages to get Fred to physically come to the hospital with him, but somehow convinces him to become pen pals with a “lonely guy with no family or loved ones to look after him (he totally pulls out the puppy dog eyes guilt trip) and somehow despite anyone’s best efforts to keep it from happening, Tadashi and Fred start to fall in love all over again :)
The Curse Breaks (a,k.a. the one part of the story I actually wrote):
Hiro races towards the center of town, running as fast as he possibly could. He’d through that Montel was evil--he’d never imagined that things could possibly get worse, but when Yama’s memories had returned Hiro was pretty sure it was only the delayed shock of getting all his memories back at once that had let Hiro get away with little more than a bloody nose (and his life.) Hiro had no idea what the hell was happening--how he was here, in some town called Storybrooke and not in San Fransokyo, and how he had these two completely different lives and memories living in his head and currently at war with each other--but all he really knew is that he needed to get somewhere safe. Somewhere that Yama couldn’t find him and hurt him.
“Hiro!” Hiro almost kept running when he heard someone shouting his name, too terrified of Yama catching up with him if he stopped, but then he suddenly felt arms wrapping around him and, after a moment of struggling, he realizes that he knew the person holding him.
“F-Fred?” Hiro gasps, looking up at the older man.
“Yeah, Hiro--it’s me,” Fred answers, a look of relief in his eyes as he smiles down at Hiro.
“Y-You remember?” Hiro cries, glad that this was at least some sort of proof that he hadn’t gone completely crazy.
“Of course I do.” Fred hugs him tighter. “I-I’m so glad that you remember too, I was afraid that you might not--”
“No, I remember.” Hiro shakes his head before adding with a shiver, “A-And Yama does too...”
“Yama?” Fred repeats only to gasp after a moment. “Holy shit! I-Is that who you’ve been living with this whole time?”
“I think the answer is obvious,” Hiro answers, pulling away and gesturing to his bloody nose.
“Oh my God.... Oh my God, Hiro I am so, so sorry,” Fred whispers, his voice full of horror. “I can’t believe-- I-I should have gotten you out of there a long, long time ago, but the curse...”
“Curse?” Hiro repeats in confusion. “What curse?”
“Apparently that’s what’s gotten us all here--a curse that took us from home and put us here, and gave us fake memories and made sure that we’d all be as miserable as possible. And it’s not just people from San Fransokyo, you won’t even believe who some of the people living in this town really are...” Fred answers before adding quickly, “But I can explain more on the way--all of our family and friends are back at my house, apparently my mom and Gogo’s parents have something to do with all of us getting wrapped up in this.”
“So everyone’s there?” Hiro asks hopefully. “Aunt Cass, Wasabi, Honey Lemon?” He’d have asked about Gogo too but Fred had already mentioned her so he could only assume that she was.
“Yes, everyone--even Mochi, can you believe that he’s actually Max?” Fred laughs.
“Whoa... That is pretty crazy,” Hiro says, shaking his head, trying to wrap his head around the idea that Aunt Cass’ cat had somehow become a human child.
It was as he was thinking this over that another thought occurred to him.
“Wait, Max...” he says slowly, and then gasps as the realization fully hits him. “Holy fuck, Baymax!”
“Hiro, I-I’m sorry, I don’t know where Baymax is yet, everyone coming out of the curse has everyone pretty scrambled up...” Fred starts to say apologetically, but Hiro cuts him off.
“No! I mean, I think I know where Baymax is!” Hiro cries, tugging on Fred’s hand. “C’mon, we have to go get him!”
“...The others can wait,” Fred after agrees after only a moment’s hesitation. “Let’s go get Baymax!”
A few minutes later, both of them rush into the hospital--things were in such a disarray that they didn’t even bother to stop at the nurse’s desk, Hiro leading the way up the stairs to the burn unit where he hoped that he’d find...
“Baymax!” Hiro lets out a huge sigh of relief when he sees the man in his standard white scrubs--it was still incredibly weird to think of the marshmallow-esque robot that Tadashi had made was somehow human, but all that really mattered that he was here and that he was safe.
“Hiro!” The man turns to Hiro, a bright smile on his face, quickly putting to rest any fears that Hiro might have had that this wasn’t actually Baymax.
“Wait, that’s Baymax?” Fred cries in surprise.
“Fred, hello!” Baymax answers cheerfully, waving to him.
“I... Uh... Hi?” Fred waves a bit awkwardly.
“I’m so glad that you’re okay,” Hiro says gratefully, hurrying into Baymax’s open arms and giving him a tight hug.
“I am very well, thank you,” Baymax answers, hugging him back, before letting him go and continuing, “There is someone else here who would like to see you!”
“Someone else?” Hiro repeats in confusion. Who else could be here that he knew?
“Hiro!”
That’s when Hiro hears a voice--a voice that, even before the curse, he’d given up on ever hearing again. No. No, it couldn’t possibly be--!
That’s when he sees Shiro, sitting in a wheelchair next to his hospital bed--the burn scars had greatly changed his appearance, it was true, and his hair was a bit longer than it had been before. But there was no mistaking those eyes, or that smile.
“T-Tadashi?” Hiro whispers, tears welling up in his eyes before he could even fully process what was happening. “I-Is it really you?”
“It’s me,” Tadashi answers, looking a bit teary eyed himself, and, without even thinking about the consequences, Hiro launches himself at Tadashi, landing in his lap and wrapping his arms tightly around him, never wanting to let him go, only to find his hands wandering over Tadashi’s features--his arms, his hands, his face--trying to prove to himself that this was real, that Tadashi was really here with him. Tadashi was doing much the same, half laughing, half crying, stroking Hiro’s hair and kissing away the tears as they fell down his cheeks.
“H-How?” Hiro whispers. “How are you here? “
“I don’t know,” Tadashi admits, shaking his head.”I-I don’t remember anything that happened to me after the fire... But I’m here, and I’m with you, and that’s all that matters.”
Hiro decides that questions can wait for later--all that mattered was that he had Tadashi back.
“D-Dashi?”
Hiro suddenly remembers that he wasn’t the only one here who had a very good reason to be glad that Tadashi was alive.
“Fred?” Tadashi cries, looking up at Fred with what could only be described as joy in his eyes, and Hiro wisely chooses to move out of the way just in time to avoid being caught in the middle as Fred pulls Tadashi into a deep, passionate kiss. Maybe back in San Fransokyo his old self would have found this gross or made a joke out of it. But not anymore. This was something he’d been trying to get to happen for months, and it felt like his dream was finally coming true. Shiro and George--no, Fred and Tadashi!--were finally a couple, and maybe with this stupid curse gone, they could get married and adopt him so he could finally be away from Yama!
But wait. No, that wasn’t right! Hiro shakes his head. That was Niko’s dream, when he was stuck here, not Hiro’s dream! Hiro never would have dreamed of his older brother and his brother’s best friend getting married and adopting him! ...Would he have? More to the point, though: if a curse had somehow sent them here (and he couldn’t think of a more logical explanation at the moment), and it had indeed been broken--shouldn’t they be back in San Fransokyo? Shouldn’t they have gone back home?
Hiro feels a cold shiver pass through him. What exactly was going on here? And who would have the answers?
“I have heard that there is a relief center being set up for those who are trying to find loved ones or who have questions about the curse,” Baymax pipes up, in the uncanny way that he had of almost reading Hiro’s thoughts.
“Well, that sounds exactly like that place we should go,” Tadashi says, turning towards them, with Fred’s hand firmly wrapped around his own.
“It does--maybe then we can bring some more information back to the others,” Fred agrees.
“Dashi, is it okay for you to leave the hospital, though?” Hiro asks a bit worriedly--he knew that Tadashi had been recovering, but he hadn’t left the hospital since being here!
“I can come with to monitor his condition,” Baymax offers.
“That would be great, thank you, Baymax.” Tadashi grins up at the other man.
“You are welcome!” Baymax replies, looking pleased to be of assistance.
“Well... If Baymax is coming with us, then I guess it should be okay,” Hiro finally relents.
“So, are we ready to go?” Tadashi asks, looking first to Fred and then to Hiro.
“Yeah,” Hiro agrees, taking Tadashi’s free hand as Fred continues to hold the other and Baymax begins pushing the chair forward. “I think we are.”
As long as he had his family and friends by his side, he was ready for whatever the future had in store for them.
((Random future story bit: The group running into Yama and Baymax giving him a good punch in the nose since Tadashi can’t stand to do it himself. “I no longer have programming, so I am no longer prevented from injuring a human being :)” (Protective Baymax is SCARY AF and also totally awesome!)))
VERSES
CANON (stranger things) --- 1980s
nancy is a canon compliant muse through the end of season 2, as i do not dispute (or ignore) any parts of her canon storyline. she has TWO different canon stranger things verses, depending on where in the timeline the plot takes place. they’re identified as either:
- before the storm (pre season 1)
OR
- aftermath (post season 2)
MODERN DAY (multi-fandom) --- 2010s
nancy also has TWO different modern day AU verses, depending on her age:
- her modern HIGH SCHOOL verse, which I use to interact with muses from fandoms like riverdale, glee, ahs, teen wolf, etc. essentially in this verse nancy’s backstory from stranger this canon is INTACT, just moved up from the 1980s to now, and the wheeler family recently moved to the town that the opposite muse is from for ted’s work.
OR
- her modern ADULT verse, where she ranges in age from 25-35. in this verse nancy graduated hawkins high and never looked back, attending college in new york city before enrolling in medical school. she becomes either a doctor in the ER, since she likes the high energy environment and the direct impact she can have on people. though she remains close to both holly and mike, nancy has little to no contact with her parents.
UMBRELLA ACADEMY (the umbrella academy) --- 2010s
nancy is the eighth child adopted by the eccentric reginald hargreeves, and a member of the Umbrella Academy. nancy is an EMPATH, able to sense, manipulate, and weaponize the emotions of others. ever a rule follower and a people pleaser, nancy was one of the last siblings to leave the mansion. but once she passed her GRE exams and was accepted into a prestigious college, she packed her bags and took off in the middle of the night. using her immense gift for academics and empathic abilities to her advantage, nancy graduated medical school with flying colors and was working as a doctor when her father died. she was always very close to allison and klaus as a child, but (unsurprisingly for an empath) loves all of her siblings very much.
HILL HOUSE (the haunting of hill house) --- 2010s
nancy wheeler was the ICU nurse on duty the night that luke crain was rushed into the emergency room by his frantic sisters. she spent DAYS with him as he came in and out of consciousness, monitoring his oxygen levels and talking to him incessantly in the hopes of sparking more brain activity. and when he actually survived it, came through the fog and woke up to nancy’s smiling face hovering over him? it didn’t take long for her to realize that her affection for luke went well beyond the accepted boundaries of patient and nurse. luckily, he felt the same - after chasing her down in the hospital hallway following his discharge to ask her out on a date, luke and nancy have been inseparable ever since. helping each other through their past traumas, meeting each other’s families, and starting a new life together.
HARRY POTTER (the harry potter series) --- 1990s
nancy wheeler is a 6th year ravenclaw prefect, whose primary academic interests include practical magic like charms and defense against the dark arts. she’s definitely a CURIOUS type, known among her fellow students for getting into some trouble in the pursuit of the truth. she’s never been caught by the faculty, hence her prefect position.
Armin is highly intelligent, but doesn't keep himself taking action when it necessary. He manages Eren’s and Mikasa’s fights.
Mikasa lived with parents until they died trying to protect her from a kidnapping attempt for human trafficking. Eren saves from her kidnappers and she kills one too. Annie isn’t a rival but more of competitor. She was adopted by Jaeger’s afterwards but always kept her name the same. She no longer in the system, but stay close by for Eren and attends all of his fights. She goes to community college studying the world and lives in studio apartment working part time a model.
Historia Reiss/ Krista Lenz. Historia lived with mom who a prostitute until she was until she was murder. This happened sometime after the earthquake. Her father was contacted but couldn't keep her, because he was married. He changed her names and made sure she got place with good foster family. Pastor Nick is her foster father. Either way he abandoned her with no further contact after said arrangement was made.
Plot stuff:
Ymir is Krista’s girlfriend and knows her whole story. She was a run away that couldn't go home, but since then turned legal.
Kenny was contract/serial killer. Was hired by Uri Reiss and became friends with him. Kenny killed Historia’s mom, because while being at Reiss household one night she overheard talk of how the company’s dam in area caused the earthquake. After his death he stayed with the Reiss company. When heard of the experimental drug, he became very interested and though of taking it, because of  his Pulmonary edema. Sadly his dream slipped away, because he learns of possible negative effect.
Historia’s mom left a tip with govement that the Reiss company was cause of the shingashina earthquake. An investagtion is opened bur left untouched for years. Until Erwin finds it. Looking into the company he finds some foster child that’s biological pararents worked for the company. Also see Historia’s file, but the next day finds a file on Krista Lenz. The following day Levi is unawarely assigned the 3 cases of Krista Lenz, Eren Jaeger and Armin Arlet.
Grisha killed Reiss family in insane rage. He worked in Research and Development department of the Reiss. Worked on producing the drug’s formula.
Petra is regular social worker with Levi. Aurou is her husband and he is cop like Farlen.
After getting Krista’s case Levi goes to inspect the home. Nick is Pastor and acquaintance of Hanji. He tells Levi that Nick took her as a favor for someone in church, but doubts the child's sanity. Because Krista sometimes calls herself Historia and is rebellious and stubborn while usually as Krista she is sweet angelic girl. Also tells Levi that she is lesbian and currently out with her girlfriend.
Hanji is psychiatrist for the government and does evaluations for the program. Mike also works with her on this, but mostly he works with Erwin. Hanji is married to Moblit
Annie and friends are poor. She is street informant and fighter. She gets information from Hitch and Marlo. Who are dating and children of officials. Marlo doesn't like any of this shady business and is determine to changed it. Annie supports it, because people like her have no other choice. She also help Armin when he needs stuff. She is good person to you, but a bad person to others. She is emancipated from her parents and is living with Berlhot and Reiner. They all when to school together. They want to gain enough money to support themselves and their families. Annie goes to Armin to ask for his genius help and in return she’d give him a percent of her cut.
Erwin believes there is connection between his father’s murder and the Reiss company. He father worked a tutor for the Reiss family until his death.
Armins parents where killed by Djel Sannes, same as Erwin’s father. Erwin found the retired Djel Sannes and brought in for questioning. He told them about illegal actions of company, but without evidence there wouldn’t be case to hold in court. He told his predecessor was Kenny Ackerman that he might sell out the company for right offer. Erwin looks for him and he finds out about his hospitalization. Erwin realizes that his Levi’s uncle that he had met once before, but Levi still underage when accepted into the program. When he goes to see him, he ask about Levi and refuses to say anything to him about the company. Erwin leaves thinking about what would be the right offer to Kenny.
Other Plot Stuff:
The earthquake was caused by Reiss Company, because they built a dam in area with stressed the land and cause the earthquake. The official story was there was a large undiscovered fault line running though the area. This worked out well. The Reiss company bought up the destroyed land and most of surrounding area to use for fracking, coal mining, logging and and energy plant. Most of this keeps the land unstable supporting that there now a highly active fault line there.
Ymir is meets Rod Reiss. He says he is curious of who his daughter was dating. He takes back to company and shows her the experiments. When Ymir ask why he says its because she about to become one. Rod Reiss didn’t not like that the only living heir of the company was dating a “an uneducated lesbian run away” when she could do so much better. When Annie, Reriner and Berholdt show up to steal the drug they find her. All sweaty and tied up to hospital bed. Eventually getting caught they too are forced into human trials of the drug. The effect of the drugs help them escape, but Berholdt has the negative effects and becomes sick. Ymir later goes berserk and kills their neighbor. Only they don’t have time to go and find her, because Berholdt is also freaking out.
Historia goes looking for Ymir after she goes missing. She finds out that picked up by limo. Then she goes to father company demanding to know what he has done to her girlfriend. At that same time Erwin is there visiting to further his investigation.
At Eren’s fight a Reiss company worker witness Eren’s rapid healing. Rod get to get his arrest for street fighting and goes to talk to him while he is in holding, but is cut off by Levi paying bail. After that he tries to get him by going through his current foster family. The Reeves. Rod threatening to demolish their small business. Fortunately by this time Eren is 18 and is taken by Levi.
After Rod ultimately fails to capture Eren he does to hospital to get Kenny. Says he was actually worried about him, that he can give a drug to hold back his ednma. Kenny responds in a scoff saying he rather not take it is going make him a sh*t brain. Rod growls in respond say the he is having discharges in hour, because he still has work for him to do. Kenny’s task is kill the Reeves and take Eren.
More Plot Stuff:
Ewrin is investing the Reiss company. Armin parents stumbled upon illegal bio-experiments and try going into hiding. Eren’s key is really opens a hidden lab where Grisha worked from home. Kenny left information on the USB that could ruin the Reiss company for the serial murder, capitalizing the natural resources of Maria County and causing the Shingashina earthquake. When Annie hears about the experimental drug and tells her friends about it. They are interested in stealing it and selling it to the highest bidder.
Eren is first successful human to take the drug. His father was just trying to make sure Eren lived a long life, unlike his wife. Its what she wanted Eren, for you to live a long time. Sadly Eren thought he was trying to kill him and while running away from the him set the house on fire while his father was still inside. This how Grisha Jaeger died.
When Kenny is dying after Rod’s failure and demise, he gives Levi the usb with the evidence of company’s crimes. The company which has a lot of influence on government and press, so it was never trialed for these crimes
Levi recognized that Eren and Armin have serious potential as candidates for the program but knows they wouldn’t join. He tell Erwin that they have their own dreams and don’t need a future to save them. He also tells Erwin about Eren’s rapid healing, which he learned of after going to one of his fights. Light bulb goes off in Erwin’s head that this might be due to his father work at the Reiss company. Erwin request to meet with Eren anyways.
Eren says that he recognizes Levi as the person who saved from some bullies a long time ago. Saying he looked taller to him back then. This before Eren knew Mikasa. Eren’s where Levi’s fosters before he got moved to place where he meet Isabel. The bullies were picking on him about Armin. Calling them fags. Levi stands up form him and chases off the bullies. Levi was around 14 and Eren was 7.
The Drug:
The experimental drug promotes longevity and youth. Even causes rapid healing. Making people almost immortal. But in other/most it causes mutation that turns people into mindless cannibalistic monsters with high body temperatures. People like this only need sunlight to basically function. The drug was made before the Shingashina earthquake, but after was shutdown by pull of government funding and pharmaceutical companies found it to be dangerous to competition refusing to invest further. Development stopped after Grisha killed the Reiss family, but samples were never destroyed. Rod Reiss began the re-development of the drug after learning he has cancer to save his own life. Almost 7 years later. Due to the profits gained from monopoly of natural resources on Maria County’s land he is able to fund research without investers.
AU Stuff:
Current ages; Historia is 17. Eren is almost 18. Mikasa is 19. Armin is 17. Levi is 25. Annie is 17 going in 18. Ymir is 19.
Facts: Eren was 9 when the Quake happened. Levi was 16. Levi has been in foster care of unspecific amount of time. Although he meet Isabel and Farlan when he was 14. They ran away at 16 after the quake. It took a year of Erwin to find them and bring them back.
Timeline:
Research for the drug started 4 years prior to earthquake. After the earthquake funding was pulled and program was abandon. 5 years after the shut down Rod Reiss restarted it, because he found out he had cancer. Copy of serum where made but no progress with eliminating the negative effect, because original research belong to Dr. Jaeger where completely lost. After 2 years of this Rod starts looking for Grishsa, but finds out he had died. He turns to Eren and starts having thoughts about his own living child. His only heir to the Reiss legacy. He incognito visits her and learns of that Ymir is he girlfriend. He then visits Ymir and invites back to office to talk. Ymir agrees to knowing he his Historia’s true father and that how he successful kidnaps her and forces her in unofficial human trials for the drug. This makes rumors and whispers spread around the company. Eventually Marlo and Hitch hear about from there parents and trade that information to Annie for drugs. Annie tells Reiner and Berholdt about this drug and start planning to steal it. Rod places people to spy on Eren. Levi becomes aware of people watching Eren while hanging out with him. Rod learns of rapid healing and then tries to kidnap him at jail, but fails. Levi tells Erwin about this and Erwin brings into the loop of the investigation. Levi gets mad about this, but trust Erwin to do make the his own decisions. He tells Levi to take Eren in hiding. Levi leaves immediately and takes Eren to his place. Then he goes back to Erwin to tell him about the things Kenny told him at hospital. Erwin calls the hospital to see if Kenny left anything there, and learns he was discharged by Rod Reiss. Realizing Eren is in danger they go for him, but him missing.
Elsewhere Historia finds Ymir in middle of break down, because she ‘ate’ someone. Once she gets her calm down Ymir explains to her what happened. Historia gets mad and calls her father. Having gotten his office number from the internet. Rod tells her they should meet and sit down to talk about this. Meanwhile he has got Eren strapped down to medical bed for examination. Historia agrees to go meet him to help Ymir. Following this Erwin and Levi prepare to invade the Reiss company to find Eren. When Historia gets there she finds her father is glad to see her and is even crying. This all an elaborte lie to manipulate her. He tells her that cure for Ymir is in Eren. This convices her that they should dissecte him. Then Kenny comes in calling Rod out on his BS, because he is only trying to save his own life and company. Rod is enraged by this and tries to kill Kenny. Rod explains to Historia that his drug can save millions of lives, but she is doubting him.
In the end Eren is saved by Levi, kills Rod Reiss with permission from Historia and Kenny is found dying. Within the USB there is document talking about an separate laboratory where the drug was conceived. This is the lab that Eren’s key unlock. Inside they find the original research and cure for the negative effect. Historia is given her father shares and hold on too --% of the company executive power. She destroys all research and development of the drug within the company. Everything else is saved in hidden lab and dedicates the company to restore the Shingashina and surround lands that they were using.
When Autumn Leaves
Chapter 2: What Comes Next
[ao3] [prologue] [1]
Pairing: Mileven AU
WC: 4.6k
Summary: Mike and El seem to find out more about each other, and in the process they find out more about themselves.
[A/N]: I still have no idea what i’m doing.
Shit.
El just took off and Mike had no idea where she went. Mr. Clarke? Who was Mr. Clarke? He cursed himself for not running after her and asking who this teacher was and where his classroom was located in this maze of a school.
You would think that after getting lost twice trying to find class that I’d have seen every hallway possible. Yet Mike found himself standing back where he started, right outside of the nurse’s office.
He looked down at his watch, a cheap plastic calculator watch that his father “gifted” him for his tenth birthday, and checked the time again. Three fifteen. He wasted fifteen minutes trying to find his locker. And now he has fifteen minutes to find Mr. Clarke’s room.
Mike lifted his right hand up to his eye level and held it there. He could see his fingers shake. Closing his eyes, he listened to his breath.
Breathe in through the nose for five seconds.
Hold for eight seconds.
Breathe out through the mouth for ten seconds.
Breathe in through the nose for five seconds.
Hold for eight seconds.
Breathe out through the mouth for ten seconds.
Mike opened his eyes again. His hand was still.
Stretching his shoulders, Mike pulled up his backpack and then started walking. He didn’t know where he was going, but somewhere was better than nowhere.
Each locker looked the same. The doors into the classrooms were all a light colored wood material. The white paint on the walls made Mike feel like he was roaming a ward in a hospital. He went left. He went right. He went straight.
He looked down at his watch again. Three twenty-four.
He took another deep breath and closed his eyes. What if she’s waiting for me? He couldn’t help but think about how she’d react if he didn’t make it. There was nothing he feared more in this moment than being thought of as a stuck up fool.  Already the new kid, now with a reputation.
This was a new start. New school, new house, new friends, new location. New life. And it was crumbling before his eyes.
At the end of the hall two figures moved from one side to the other. Mike could swear that one had red hair and the other brown. It’s El.
Without hesitation Mike sprinted towards the end of the hallway. His legs felt like air, like there was nothing between him and the ground. He saw the two of them enter a classroom. That has to be it.
Mike took a moment to catch his breath. There’s no point in coming in looking like you were lost. No one needs to know that.
Right as he was to enter the door he stopped himself. He worried about the eyes that always felt like daggers. There was comfort in them, not how they felt but a comfort in their presence. He always had eyes on him. Most of the time it could be blamed on his height and his hair. But today it was the comfort of an actor. Terrified of judgement but at ease with the company.
His mind was telling him that he could lie and go home, say he was pulled aside by a teacher to get caught up on school work, maybe say his mother picked him up early, or maybe his sister didn’t want to wait for him.
But his hand moved for him.
The door creaked open and he took a step in.
Breathe in through the nose for five seconds.
Hold for eight seconds.
Breathe out through the mouth for ten seconds.
“Mike! I was starting to think you were lost.”
El was sitting in the back of the classroom on a desk, her feet dangling in the air in front of her. She still had the splint on her nose. Next to her, the redhead that Mike had seen entering the classroom with El was sitting in a chair writing in a notebook.
“I just uh,” Mike began, taking his eyes off El and scanning the floor in front of her. “I just needed to go to my locker and get my books changed.”
“I want you to meet everyone,” El said, dropping off the desk and standing up. Her voice was still nasally, but nothing like it was before.
“Max, Lucas, Will,” El said pointing at each person, ignoring the fact that they weren’t paying attention to her. “And that’s Dustin. I think you two met already.”
Mike hadn’t noticed the three boys when he entered the room. They were at the front, each with chalk in their hands, musing over scribbles on the chalkboard. The design, Mike could see, was something resembling a catapult, although the drawing looked nothing of the sort.
“Tell me what you want and I’ll draw it,” Will said, pushing Dustin out of the way.
“Dustin,” Mike heard El call out. She had silently appeared next to him. She was shorter than he remembered. “I want to introduce you to Mike.”
Dustin turned around and came over to Mike. Lucas and Will had moved from the board and were now watching. Mike could only assume they were holding their breath as well, since the room was painfully quiet.
“Don’t take my seat again.” Dustin held out his hand as if he was offering some kind of one sided peace treaty.
Before Mike could register what was going on, a book came from the back of the classroom and struck Dustin on the side. The two of them looked to see Max standing up from her desk with raised eyebrows.
“I’m sorry for being an asshole,” Dustin said, looking down at his feet.
“It’s okay,” Mike whispered.
El crossed her arms and sighed. “It’s not okay.”
“El,” Will cautioned, “it’s not worth it.”
Will nodded to her and El responded with a deep breath.
Silence fell upon the room again. Mike didn’t want to be the one to break it. He was already the center of attention. There was no point in making it about him again.
“So,” Lucas said, elongating the final syllable. “What do you know about catapults?”
Mike felt the eyes fall upon him again.
Actor. Stage. Audience. Give them what they want.
He walked up to the chalkboard to examine the drawing closer. The physics were more advanced than they were learning that year. But it was simple equations, a plug and play of sorts.
“It looks like a mix of a catapult and a trebuchet. You have the weight system of a trebuchet in the front but also the spring mechanism from a catapult. You have too much force.”
Mike turned to see the Dustin and Lucas squint at their design. Dustin’s head tilted to the side. Both of them were somewhat lost in thought, until Dustin spoke up.
“Well, what do you suggest?”
Mike stood silently for a moment. While their plan was bound to fail, coming in and saying your idea is horrible and I can fix it if you let me take control of the entire situation probably wouldn’t be the best way to become part of their group. He turned to El, who, looking back up at him so he could see the whites of her eyes, nodded as if to say just go for it.
“Maybe,” Mike said as he started to walk up to the board, “if you stick with the catapult design, you could use half the materials.” As he was talking, Mike picked up a piece of leftover chalk and began to draw his own model. “You could get the same result and it would be more efficient.”
“I like it,” Will said with agreement, “I don’t know about you but it makes more sense to me.”
“Well if everyone hates my idea and loves that one, I think it’s pretty clear then,” Dustin said as he started to erase the old drawing. “Let’s do the damn thing.”
Mike turned to see if El was watching everything go according to plan. Instead, she was engrossed in a conversation with Max, the both of them making their way back to the seats they were occupying earlier.
Mike felt his heartbeat slow down and his stomach inch it’s way back out from his throat. One thing at a time.
The rest of the hour was spent with lists and drawings, schematics and textbooks, materials and planning. The rules of the science fair were explained quite simply. They had to make two different catapults. One had to be a small model for prejudgement and the other had to be a full scale working model that was able to fire a projectile exactly twenty-five feet into a basket. And they had till the end of October. Four weeks.
Will was the first to leave when his older brother, who's name Mike didn’t catch, came by to pick him up. Dustin followed shortly after because of a “family dinner” that he couldn’t miss.
That left El, Max, and Lucas. Mike packed up his things carefully. He didn’t want to make it clear that he was ready to go home.
“You said you lived on Windsor, right?” El asked as she pulled her backpack straps tighter on her shoulders. Her and Max were already by the door.
“Windsor street,” Mike repeated.
The way that Max raised her eyebrows made Mike think that she thought something lik e “are you fucking serious???”
It was awkward to say the least. Even after spending an hour under the eyes of his fellow classmates, Mike still felt as if every move he had was being calculated and averaged into a sum that would somehow determine if he was going to be allowed back into the friend group tomorrow.
He minded his own business, kept quiet, and made his way out of the classroom when prompted.
The air was different than hours before when he and El leisurely walked the halls. He watched as she walked in front of him, hands on the straps of her backpack, her worn converse squeaking as the heels dragged on the floor.
While El and Max led the way through the now empty school, Lucas and Mike followed side by side behind.
“Where do you live?” Mike didn’t expect the question to come out of his mouth. Way to be subtle, Wheeler.
“On Windsor, actually,” Lucas laughed. “A few houses down from El. We grew up together. Before she and Hopper moved it was pretty quiet. Then came Will, Max, and finally Dustin.”
Mike mumbled in agreement, and continued walking. The doors were approaching quickly and Mike began to prepare for the outside chill. Hawkins weather was nothing like Chicago weather.
When the doors opened, each inch of Mike’s body felt like it had been stung thousands of times. He shoved his hands deeper into his pockets and burrowed his chin into the collar of his jacket.
“You act like you’ve never been in the cold before,” Lucas said as he put his hands in his coat pocket.
“I’m from Chicago,” Mike said with a muffled voice. “You don’t spend a lot of time outside in the winter.”
Lucas followed El and Max, while Mike stayed close behind. He watched as the three of them made their way to the bike rack, where two lonely bikes were parked side by side. As Mike came closer he realized that there was a skateboard inside the front basket of one of the bikes.
Bikes. Why does it always have to be bikes. Mike’s dad had given him a bike as “incentive” to move out of the city. Did he know how to ride one? No, but he didn’t think he’d ever have to. Only people in movies ride bikes in small towns, right?
“Did you walk?” El asked pointely as she pulled her bike off the rack. It was old and Mike could tell it had seen better days.
Lucas had already mounted his bike, and, standing beside him, was Max, who had the skateboard tucked under her arm.
“It’s not that far,” Mike began, bringing his shoulders in closer to his ears to somehow retain more heat.
“You’re right,” El said.
Mike watched as she started to walk down the sidewalk to the road. He was flustered, not by her choice to walk in the cold when she had a bike that would get her home in half the time, but by the fact that she was so straight. There was something about the lack of conflict, how she seemed to know what she wanted and went for it. He liked that.
He also sprinted to catch up with her.
Mike didn’t get to notice much of Hawkins when they came in a few days ago.
With El, Max, and Lucas focusing on the road ahead, Mike took the opportunity to take in what he hadn’t seen before. The trees that lined the sidewalks and the cracking road were starting to change. Oranges and reds were darker than he imagined the countryside would be. It’s not even the countryside . Some of the houses had to be at least a hundred years old, if not more. Big front porches, ornate doors, and spacious front yards seemed to go one after another; it was like he went back in time.
He hadn’t noticed that the tree line came up to the backyards of each house. As he continued walking, with each passing gap between the houses, Mike studied their space. They were tightly knit in places, almost impenetrable, and, just a few houses down, they were so sparse that he could barely consider it a forest.
Mike wanted to jog ahead and talk with El and Max but it didn’t seem right. They were keeping to themselves, probably girl talk or something, but he couldn’t shake the fact that El invited him to walk with them and yet hadn’t said a word to him yet. He couldn't tell if he was disappointed or angry. He knew that state too often.
The sun was setting, behind the houses, even though the sun set closer to seven than it did four. The breeze was growing colder and Mike knew it wasn’t long until the group would separate.
Hawkins wasn’t like Chicago. Back home, if it was quiet enough to hear your own breathing, there was something seriously wrong. He’d grown accustomed to the barrage of car horns and trains in all hours of the night. And yet, walking down the street of houses ten times the size of their apartment back home, Mike felt like felt oddly out of place.
It wasn’t the people, though they were much slower and far kinder. It wasn’t the empty fields, though they did introduce him to many more colors that he didn’t even know existed. It wasn’t even the new group of people he hesitated to call his friends, though they were the first ones to make him smile in a very long time. It was something in the air. As if there was a secret he wasn’t privy to yet.
“We don’t go out into that forest,” Lucas said. Mike assumed that he’d noticed that he’d been staring off behind the houses.
“It seems like you could get lost pretty easily,” Mike responded.
“They say the last kid to go exploring in there got lost and died. They never found him.” Lucas looked ahead, keeping an eye on the two girls walking in front. “There’s also reports of howls and barking too. They say it’s wolves that make their way down from Michigan but I don’t know.”
“You’ve heard them before?” Mike questioned.
“Only once, but it didn’t sound like any kind of bark I’ve ever heard.” Lucas stuffed his hands in his pockets again.
The group of kids continued down the street, mostly quiet, with a few remarks about the cold and the homework due tomorrow. It was the kind of meandering conversation that could go for hours, but it was quietly cut off by Lucas saying goodbye and turning off to his house. Mike could see his own house from there, and a warm feeling grew in him that made up for the cold outside. People his age were close by. That was new.
And then he remembered that Lucas had said something about him and El living a few houses down from each other. No way.
“So which one’s yours?” Max asked.  She had watched Lucas drop his bike by the side of his house and smiled when he turned around to wave goodbye. Mike sensed something between them.
“The, um, white one,” Mike mumbled. He pointed to his house to make up for the jumble of words in his mouth. El had a redder face than she did when he last saw her. He found himself noticing even more about her: the way the breeze blew a stray curl from behind her ear, the way she kept picking at her thumb, and the way she looked at him with eyes that were darker than anything he’d seen before.
“You’re neighbors,” Max laughed, punching El on the shoulder. Mike can see El’s face grow even redder. He could feel his own get warmer despite the cold.
Mike wanted nothing more than to get out of this situation but every part of him wanted to stay and get to know the two girls who kept to themselves most of the walk home. She invited him to walk with them but she didn’t want to talk to him.
Mike realized it was getting awkward fast. Quit while you’re ahead, right?
“I’m, uh,” Mike began, feeling his hands start to shake again. “I’m gonna get going. See you in History.”
El looked down at her shoes. Mike could see her fiddling with her thumb again. “Oh, ok.” She replied.
And with that Mike turned to his house without a single look behind. No sudden movements. Act cool. He wasn’t cool, though. He tripped up the stairs to the front door but played it off as if he was running up them. And once he got inside and closed the door behind him, he leaned back against the door and slid down.
He felt his heart beat fast. He wasn’t much of an athlete, was rarely any good in gym class, and couldn’t run a mile to save his life. And now, for reasons he didn’t know just yet, the girl outside was taking his breath away.
Holy shit.
“Michael, is that you?” A voice called from the kitchen down the hall. “Dinner’s already done so eat whenever.”
Mike’s mother, Karen, wasn’t exactly the best stay at home mother. Sure, she kept the house clean and watched over his younger sister Holly, but she wasn’t the most interactive of parents. He couldn’t remember the last time they played a game together.
Mike tried to shake the day out of his head but each time he kept seeing pictures of El. And it started to scare him. It had been one day and he was already getting too close. The last time he made friends he changed schools just weeks later. Distance, he told himself. Distance.
Getting up, Mike made his way past stacks of boxes that lined the hallway. For living in an apartment, he didn’t realize how much stuff they’d acquired since the last move.
He made his way into the kitchen, pulled some silverware out of the box that sat on the counter, and dug into the box labeled “dishes” for plates only to be met with fancy Christmas platters that hadn’t been used in years. After resigning to eat directly from the pot of potatoes and chicken on the stove, he did his best to sneak up to his room, past his mother, so that he could avoid having to have one more conversation for the night.
It wasn’t that he hated people. No, it was that he was an internal person. He needed to be alone to recharge, to decompress, to be one with his thoughts. Back in Chicago, they told him that it was healthy to an extent. They told him to find someone who would listen, because talking to yourself isn’t ideal.
In his bedroom, Mike tossed his backpack on his bed and walked over to the window, past the boxes with all of his clothes and books and little nick nacks that he had collected over the years.
Through the glass he saw the upstairs light of the house across the street come on, and he could see a figure cross back and forth, blocking out the light. He could faintly make out brown curly hair before the curtains were drawn closed.
He placed a hand on the window and smiled. “Nice to meet you, El.”
“How are you going to explain it?” Max asks, lying down on the sofa. She pulls a book out of her bag and starts to flip through the pages.
El lifts her head from her notebook at the table across the room. “Explain what?”
“That thing on your face,” Max retorts. She reaches into her bag again and pulls out a pencil and starts writing in the margins.
Max’s observation sparks a light in El that she hadn’t thought through yet. The daughter of the chief of police Jim Hopper comes home with a seemingly broken nose? He was understanding, however, and he knew she hated lying. It was mutual trust that kept their house from collapsing in on itself.
“I’ll tell him what happened,” El replies. “I tripped and fell in class.”
“And you honestly think he’ll believe you?”
“Have I lied before?” El waits for a response but nothing comes out Max’s mouth. As if Max realized it wasn’t worth a fight, the two girls go back to their books.
Max then dog ears a page and sits up. “So is he in the party or was this just a one time thing?”
El looks up from her book and over at Max. She knows exactly who Max is talking about. And she really doesn’t want to be having this conversation.
“Why not?” El smiles. “Do you think he’s cute?”
“What?! No! If anyone it’s you!!” Max spits back at El.
“For once can I think someone is nice without you thinking I like them?” In that brief moment El starts to think about what Max actually meant. Sure she noticed the little things about him, like how he was way too dressed up for the first day of school, how he smiled when he was talking about himself, how his messy brown hair matched his dark brown eyes and oh my god.
She could feel her face start to turn red and her stomach start to constrict. He’s just nice and sweet and cute . But despite all that, she couldn’t help but wait to go to class again. Even History was starting to seem like it could be fun.
“What happened to her?” A voice came from across the room and as quickly as El could look up her father was already up in her face. Hopper turns to look at Max, as if he expected her to answer.
“Don’t look at me,” Max begins. “I wasn’t there.”
El feels her face getting hot as Hopper starts to fiddle with the splint on her nose.
“I tripped and fell in class,” El starts. She tries to push her father’s hands away but he continues. “I went to the nurse and she put this on me and said it will last until we go to the doctor.”
“Did she?” Hopper says with a raised eyebrow. “Max come over here.”
El has no idea what is going on and it doesn’t look good. She sees Max come over and stand beside her, waiting for some kind of direction from Hopper. And the intensity of his stare at her nose isn’t helping one bit.
“Grab El’s hand.”
“What?” Both girls respond. It’s clear that Max is as confused as El is.
“Grab her hand,” Hopper repeats. Max obliges.
“Look at me,” He says, looking El in the eyes. She just wants to know what the hell is going on.
And, when Hopper grabs hold of the tape that is holding the splint on her nose and rips it off, El figures out what’s going on pretty quickly.
She’s glad only Max got to see the bright red lines that covered her face. There’s a burning on both sides and she swears she can feel more blood slowly making its way down her nose.
“It’s not broken,” Hopper says, getting up and balling the nurses splint in his hands. “Back in the service we went through medical training and you just bruised it.”
For all that Hopper did for her, his give and take no shit attitude made them the perfect pair. Rarely did either of them keep things from the other and they never lied. This doesn’t mean there weren’t fights. Oh there were fights. When two people live under the same roof and neither want to deal with bullshit, obvious tension ensues. One would leave, stay at the Byers’ house for a night, and they’d make up the next day. It was a routine and it worked.
“God,” Max chuckles. “You look like shit.”
El tries crinkle her nose but the pain is still quite present. Instead she goes with a mouthed shut up.
Afraid that someone is going to try to change the conversation, El gets up and makes her way into the hall.
It’s a large house for two people, but with Hopper’s affinity for collecting junk, it’s become quite cosey. In the large hallway stands an old mirror mounted on a dresser. To any other family, a dresser in the hall would be a terrifying misuse of furniture. But here? It was perfect.
And obviously something must be wrong with it because El can only see Frankenstein’s monster instead of herself. If she shows up to school the next day looking like something out of a horror movie, she’d be the new mascot. That’s what happened when Carol showed up after being attacked by a stray cat. The school just so happened to choose the lion as the spirit animal.
“I saw the Wheeler’s. They invited us to dinner tomorrow night,” El hears Hopper call from the kitchen.
“Who?” El responds.
“Our new neighbors, the ones across the street? I can’t stay for the whole thing but you’ll be fine, right?”
El looks back in the mirror. Hopefully Mike isn’t afraid of monsters.
for that big list of aus do you think you could combine 10.iv and 10.v with reddie ???? with Eddie being the one obsessed with Christmas and snow bc it just sounds adorable okay and your writing is amazing
You are too kind. This ended up really long, my bad.
Richie watched the snow fall from his seat, the white clumpsgathering at the base of the window before flying off back into the abyss. Asmile curled at the corner of his lips, he loved snow, probably more than anyof his friends. It had a purity to it, a sense that their sins would wash awaywith the new blanket of fluff. He preferred it around Christmas, but he wouldsettle for its early arrival.
“Okay you got Bill’s new roommate’s name down right? Youaren’t going to embarrass me right?” Stan asked flatly from beside him. Anyonewho gave him a second look would think that the boy was 60 rather than 23. He worepressed pants, a cardigan, and carried a sense of arrogance that only peoplewith years of experience in life have. Not to mention his granny reading glassesand Sunday newspaper that he insisted on bringing along with them for theirtrip. They were complete opposites. Richie had more of a punk rock vibe,choosing torn jeans over pressed ones and a leather jacket over a cardigan anyday.How they ended up best friends was beyond them.
“Yeah, yeah. Eddie. I got it the first time you told me.” Hereplied, huffing in annoyance. “Doesn’t he have his own family to be with forThanksgiving? That place is already going to be crowded with Mike’s new girl coming.”
Stan rolled his eyes, “Don’t be bitter just because you haveto sleep on the floor.”
“Well not everyone can sleep in Bill’s bed.” He retortedplayfully, enjoying the bush that crept up Stan’s neck. “I mean I could, butyou know I’m a vivid dreamer. I’d hate to play out my wet dreams with the twoof you and-“
“Beep beep Richie.” He jeered just as their stop wasannounced.
The two exited, heading out of the terminal and out into thebusy streets of New York. “So have you ever even met this guy?” Richie asked,following close to on his friends heels. “Is he a weirdo like Bill’s last roommate,or like a creep like his roommate before that?”
“Bill says he’s normal. A little pristine but normal.” Stanshrugged, pulling his coat tighter against him as the snow became heavier inthe air. “He’s a nurse at the hospital, real smart and real clean.”
“Sounds like I’m gonna hate him.”
“Wow you just have the most faith in people don’t you?” Hebit, the townhouse coming into view. “You don’t have to like him Rich, you justhave to deal with him okay? Just for this holiday and then Christmas is at Beverly’s.”
Richie blew a raspberry as his response, to which Stanmerely ignored. They took to the steps of the home, knocking at the door. “I’mtelling you Richie, if you ruin this I will kick you out of our apartment. Justbehave.”
There wasn’t enough time to respond because that second thedoor opened, reviling a very done up Beverly. She let out a squeal, embracingStan. “Oh finally, you were the last to arrive! Did you have a nice tripupstate?”
“Fine.” Stan lied, moving past her and into the home.
“Damn Bev, eat my heart out.” Richie cooed, pulling the fieryhaired woman into his arms.
“Don’t let Ben hear you. I’m spoken for now.” She repliedsweetly, holding out her left hand. “He’s going to make an honest woman of meafter all.”
“God damn look at that rock!” He cooed, pulling her hand toget a closer look. “Shit, I’ll let him fuck me if he gets me one of those!” Beverlypushed him playfully, shaking her head in annoyance.
Once Richie entered the home, the smell of turkey andstuffing wafted back into him. His stomach responded by growling eagerly. He wasnext met with Ben, who hugged him briefly but sternly, followed by Mike and hisnew girlfriend who he learned was named Maggie and who embraced him regardlessof just meeting him. Richie felt his heart swell at the sight of them all, thankfulthat he had his own little family this time of the year.
“Where’s Bill? I gotta tell him that that food smellsamazing.”
“Oh he’s in the kitchen with Eddie.” Mike replied, gesturingto the door. Richie grimaced at the statement, picturing an extremely primpedand uptight man helping his brother with their dinner. He nodded, trudging throughthe door.
He entered the room with a bang, the door slamming againstthe counters loudly. “Honey, I’m home!” Richie bellowed obnoxiously.
Bill looked up from the oven, smiling widely. “RichieTozier, as I live and breathe.” He cooed, dropping his spoon and pulling hisfriend into a sincere hug, “I feel like I haven’t seen you in a fucking year.”
“Just about.” He replied, looking over to the beautifularray of the food. “Since when did you become a chef? Last time you were incharge of dinner, you burnt the pizza.”
“Actually Eddie cooked.”
“You helped.” A voice replied from behind the door to thefridge. As the barrier was shut, Richie could feel his breath hitch in the backof his throat. The man, who he thought he would hate, was no older than him. Hewas short in stature, standing only to Richie’s chest. The pink polo he worewas partially covered by his apron, which looked well used. Bill was right indescribing him as pristine, but also horribly incorrect. Inside of him wasn’tan old soul like Stan, but rather a bright and beautiful one, one that wouldburn Richie to the core.
Eddie smiled, causing Richie’s knees to become weak. “I don’tthink we’ve met.” The small adult muttered, extending his hand. “You must be Richie.”
“Yes sir.” He managed in response, taking the petite hand intohis. God, he was soft. “You’re Eddie yeah?”
“That’s me.” Eddie jeered. “The party crasher.”
“Stop calling yourself that.” Bill interjected as they droppedtheir hands, making Richie instantly feel bare. “I invited you to this, therewasn’t any way you could go back home this year, not after what happened.”
“What happened?” Richie asked.
Eddie cringed, recovering quickly with a fake smile. “Nothingto worry about right now.” He replied softly. “Dinner is almost done. Do youmind telling the others?” Richie nodded, looking to Bill who only wore a sadface. As he left he could hear their hushed voices and although he could notmake out what was said he was sure that Eddie was scorning his roommate for theslip.
The food was absolutely fabulous.
Every single item was made to perfection, and the Losers atethe entire thing up. As they sat around the table lazily, conversation seemedto center around the surprising snow fall. Richie felt his stomach flip in excitement.His head perked up, smiling at his friends he blurted. “Okay, who is going togo out and look at the snow with me?”
Everyone groaned at once, all muttering smoothing profoundunder their breath. Maggie looked like she was going to raise her hand but Mikesnatched her wrist, shaking his head vigorously. “I’ll go.” A small voice fromthe opposite end of the table said.
“Uh Eddie, I don’t think you want to do that.” Ben warned, “Richieis a bit intense.”
“I’ll be fine. I love the snow.”
Richie barged outside with the small boy in tow, kicking upthe snow that had freshly fallen on their steps. He beamed as he watched Bill’sroommate follow him, his pea-coat nearly swallowing him whole. Eddie smiled,taking two steps at a time until his feet were firmly planted on the asphalt. “So.”He sang, raising an eyebrow at Richie. “Is there a specific reason your friendsdidn’t want to join you?”
“Maybe…” Richie replied sly, watching the other kid wanderaround the sidewalk. “Maybe not…”
Eddie hummed, rolling eyes and looking up towards the sky.Richie took his opening, shoving a handful of snow down the back of his coat.Eddie squealed in surprise, jumping in circles and cursing his name. Richiecouldn’t help but laugh.
“I’m the snow king Eds. That’s why no one-“He was cut shortby a snow ball that hit him squarely in the chest, sending shards of ice intohis mouth. “What in the hell!” he sputtered, tasting the lingering New Yorkflavor.
“You’re a shitty king.” Eddie retorted, throwing another ball,only this time missing by a few inches.
“Oh you’re dead.”
Bill and the others watched in horror as the two returned completelydrenched from head to toe. They were rushed off to shower and change with stupidlybig grins plastered on their faces. Richie refused to admit that he had losthis crown.
After that the night progressed quickly, becoming one bigblur of laughter and tomfoolery. It was like Eddie had been the missing pieceof their group, his smart mind keeping Stan and Ben entertained, his work andtravel interesting Mike and his quick mouth keeping Richie in line. No matterwho he spoke with, in a matter of mere minutes they were swooned, drawn in byhis charisma and kindness.
Two by two, the couples left for bed, leaving Richie andEddie. Conversation began to lag, an uncomfortable silence lingering betweenthen. Richie wasn’t typically the edgy type, hell he could make a politiciansmile, but there was something about Eddie that made him nervous. Almostscared. He didn’t want to say the wrong thing or make him uncomfortable in anyway so he opted for nothing. Which in retrospect probably wasn’t the best idea.
“Oh!” Eddie exclaimed after nearly thirty minutes ofsilence. “I almost forgot!”
Richie watched the small figure jump from the couch and bolttowards the hallway closet. There was a commotion and a few slurs buteventually he emerged with a tote that was almost as large as he was. Eddiesmirked up at him, popping open the lid and expelling the contents.
“What the actual fuck?” Richie griped, watching none otherthan Christmas directions spill at his feet. “You have got to be kidding me.”
“Nope.” He replied with a pop of his p. Quickly he began togather his things, an excitable giggle following him as he went.
“It’s literally still Thanksgiving.”
“So?”
“So? It’s fucking November and-no, not the tree. Put thatback.”
Eddie ignored him, setting up the base by the staircase. Heskipped with enthusiasm, disregarding the looks that Richie gave him. It wasalmost too cute, his tiny hands working poorly with the twisted lights, hishappy hum causing Richie to just stare in awe.
How had he gone his entire life not knowing this kid? Whatwas this feeling burning in his chest and what in the hell was he doing startingin the middle of the bundle?
“Oh my god, you’re doing it all wrong!” Richie muttered,grabbing the tangled mess from Eddie. “Let me just do it.”
“Thanks.” He whispered, his cheeks blushing a beautiful pinktint.
“Yeah yeah.” Riche replied, his voice lacking bite.
“I owe ya one.” Eddie poked, moving to the tote and pullingout more decorations.
Richie could feel the question on his tongue, he bit downhard trying to kill it but somehow it managed to slip past him. “So uh, whydidn’t you just go home for Thanksgiving?”
He could see Eddie tense up at the question, making Richieregret even speaking. Surprisingly he relaxed, wrapping the long tinsel aroundhis neck and filling his tiny hands with ornaments. “I had it out with mymother recently, we got into a huge fight and she told me not to come home forthe holidays.”
“Oh.” Richie choked, watching Eddie shrug. “What was it all about?”
“She doesn’t want a faggot for a son.” He replied easily,before Richie had a chance to reply he turned towards him, smiling. “Do youthink I should hang mistletoe?”
“Hell yeah.”
summary: mike gets admitted to a psych ward. he’s scared of what’s going to happen and what kind of people he’s going to meet, but his mother made him promise to give it a chance because she didn’t know what else to do for him
a/n: so i’ve seen a lot of psych ward aus and tbh they make me mad?? i was in and out of psych wards from the age of twelve to eighteen and i’ve been in several different psych wards. it’s almost never like what people paint them as in the aus that they write so i wanted to try to write one with my own experiences. let me know what you guys think
word count: 2793
“You don’t really need a tour. All of this stuff is labelled and it’s really hard to get lost around here. They typically just have someone give a tour so that you can get to know someone. It’s really overwhelming to just walk into the common area and be attacked by literally everyone. They get really excited when someone new comes in.”
Mike nodded and continued to follow the shorter boy down the hall. The nurses station was the first thing he saw and then the other boy had walked him down the hallway of bedrooms. About halfway down the hallway it split off into an intersection. To the left were a few more bedrooms, the kitchen, and a dining area. Ben had explained that that was where they ate breakfast but they ate lunch and dinner off the unit. To the right was the common area and a hallway that led to a door which was locked, but led into the courtyard. There was a whiteboard on that wall that had a list of names with backwards checkmarks beside the names. “Why are the checks backwards?” he had asked, walking closer to the whiteboard as he studied it.
“Bethany always does the checks backwards when she’s counting how many people are leaving. It’s just a silly thing that makes some of us laugh. Some other patients get pretty annoyed by it, but she continues anyway.” Ben explained with a smile. Ben was almost a head shorter than Mike. He was much rounder, but it was clear to Mike that he was trying to hide that behind a baggy grey sweatshirt and pajama pants with snowflakes decorating them. The hem of one pant leg was rolled up and the other pooled around Ben’s toes.
Nodding with a smile, Mike turned his attention away from the board and back to the boy that was giving him a tour. He opened his mouth to say something because he felt like he should. Nothing came to mind, though, so he simply closed his mouth. Ben offered a warm smile before he pointed down the hallway that stretched on. “There’s some more bedrooms down there. I’m pretty sure that they said you’d be rooming with Richie. He tends to always be talking but we had lights out about an hour ago and he’s on pretty heavy sleep aides. So you probably won’t experience him in all of his glory until the morning.” Ben smiled, walking down the hallway to lead Mike to his room. “I’m in the first room on the left. My roommate is Bill and he’s, uh, something. We both tend to stay up later so rather than letting our roommates complain about us they just put us together. Don’t go up to him tomorrow, though, wait for him to come to you.”
Mike nodded once again and he bit his lip. Ben seemed nice and friendly, Mike hoped that most of the other patients were like that. Something about Ben seemed vaguely familiar as well, but Mike couldn’t quite place where he recognized him from. “Do you know when I’ll get my clothes back so I can change into pajamas? I meant to ask but my mom had a lot of questions for the nurse and before I knew it, I was being introduced to you.” he explained, tugging awkwardly at the edge of his shirt. He was still in a worn pair of blue-jeans and a graphic tee and he really was hoping that he wouldn’t have to sleep in those.
“They usually check stuff overnight for any form of contraband. If you need something before bed, though, you can go down to the nurse’s station and ask for something. They usually give you what you ask for as long as it doesn’t have strings or anything else that’s against the rules.” Ben explained. Mike could see that the other boy was growing tired and he didn’t want to keep him away from his bed any longer.
A calloused hand came to rest on the smaller boy’s shoulder and he smiled warmly. “Thank you for showing me around and being so friendly. I was kinda nervous but you make this a little less scary.” he smiled. Ben didn’t flinch away from the touch and instead he nodded a little. He looked like he was going to say something but a staff member came down the hall and ushered Ben to his room while thanking him for teaching Mike the ropes.
Mike asked the nurse if he could get some sweatpants from his bag and she told him that they’d have to cut out the strings if it had any. It made sense to Mike and he nodded, following the nurse to the nurse’s station. It took a few seconds for his bag to be located and a pair of sweatpants to be found in the clothes that his mother had packed for him. The nurse pulled the string out of the waist of the sweatpants and held them out for Mike. He walked back up the steps that led to the boy’s side of the unit and walked into the room that he was told was his.The room was filled with snores and Mike could see moonlight mixed with streetlights coming in through the window. Mike considered turning on the light but he decided to not disturb the sleeping boy.
Glancing at the figure sleeping in the bed closer to the window, Mike noticed that the boy seemed too big for the twin sized mattress. Curly hair was splayed across the pillow and Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he saw that the boy still had glasses resting on his nose. A white tank top twisted around pale skin and the white blanket that was provided by the hospital was tangled between long legs. Mike ducked into the attached bathroom and flipped on the light. The shower was a simple stall with a shower curtain attached to the ceiling. There was no rod for the curtain and the showerhead looked different than the one at home. The mirror seemed to be attached securely to the wall and Mike wondered if it was real glass when he changed into his sweatpants. Sleep came quicker than Mike thought it would. He thought the new environment would make it difficult but the whole day had been so exhausting that Mike fell asleep within moments of his head hitting the very flat pillow.
~~~
“It is seven thirty in the morning. The kitchen opens at seven thirty in the morning. Why is the kitchen still locked, Amanda?” A harsh voice pulled Mike out of his dreams. He looked over to see that the boy beside him was still asleep. The glasses seemed to have fallen onto the floor at some point during the night and with the sunlight creeping in, Mike could see a bruise forming on the boy’s cheek. He wondered how that got there. Stretching his arms over his head, Mike got out of the bed and poked his head out of his room to see a curly haired boy standing where the hallway split into four paths. A young looking woman with blonde hair stood in front of him with a tired look in her eyes and a clipboard in her hand.
“Stanley, I’ll open the kitchen when I finish room checks. We have this argument every morning.”
“We wouldn’t have this argument every morning if you guys knew how to follow a simple routine.” Stanley bit back. Mike studied the other boy for a moment and he found it out how the boy was dressed before most of the other patients were even awake. He was wearing a polo with some khaki pants. Mike noticed a cast on his foot and the other foot had a shoe missing it’s laces. It seemed to be such a strange contrast to how perfect everything else looked. Mike considered going out to talk to the boy but he remembered Ben’s advice about Bill and instead sat on the edge of his bed while he listened to the boy argue with the staff member. “Amanda, if you want to help me you’d follow the schedule.”
“Stanley you know that the whole point of you being here is to help you. I have to help everyone, though, and I’m not helping everyone if I’m ignoring room checks to monitor the kitchen so you can get your breakfast.”
“Why do you all think you have to monitor me in the kitchen? What do you think I’m going to kill myself with a banana?”
“Go to the nurse’s station and see if someone else can open the kitchen for you. I have to finish room checks.”
He could hear Stanley scoff and then he heard retreating footsteps. Mike assumed that Stanley had given in and gone to the nurse’s station. A few moments later there was a knock at his door before a friendly face poked in. “Room checks!” she chirped, smiling when she saw Mike sitting on his bed. “You can go sit in the dining area and wait for breakfast, honey. They take you all to school after breakfast.” Mike nodded and got up from his spot on the bed as the woman stepped into the room. “Richie! Rise and shine!” she said, picking the glasses up from the floor and holding them out to the sleeping boy.
“Amanda, I always tell you, there’s a much better way that you could wake me up.”
“Put your glasses on and go apologize to your roommate for your snoring.”
“I don’t have a roommate.”
“You got one last night.”
“Oh, shit! Well, I hope we can sure breakfast, m’love.”
Mike could hear Amanda laughing and then he felt an arm around his shoulders. He looked up to see the face of his roommate about even with his own. It was hard to tell if Richie was taller than him or if it was just his wild hair. “I’m Mike.” he said with a small smile as he walked in the direction of the dining hall. They didn’t get far before Stanley was walking down the opposite end of the hallway and he could hear him groan.
“Richie! We don’t all want to see your stained tank tops and dirty boxers! Go put some clothes on you walking garbage can.” The nurse seemed to consider intervening, but decided against it. Richie flipped Stanley off before Mike felt the arm leave his shoulders. Richie was mumbling under his breath before he shut the door to the shared room. Mike sat down at the picnic style table in the dining area and rested his elbows on the table.
“I wouldn’t put my elbows on that table if I were you. Richie spilled jelly on that table three days ago and I’m pretty sure it’s become a part of the table now.” Stanley said as he sat across from Mike. He pulled his elbows off the table and inspected the top of it. It was decorated with a variety of stains and there were some things carved into the top of it.
“Did we get another new kid overnight? I swear we’re going to run out of room in this fucking place. Can people stop trying to kill themselves?” a voice came from behind Mike. It was laced in sleep and a bit higher than Mike expected. He turned around to see a boy with messy hair and freckles across his nose. His hair was a chestnut brown and he was in red shorts with a rainbow along the side of it. He also had a sweater that seemed to practically hang off of him and socks pulled up to his mid-calf.
“If they catch you wearing Bill’s clothes again then they’ll kick you out and we’ll have room for another new kid, Eddie.”
“Shut the fuck up. I found this in the lost and found.”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Keep talking and I’ll code again and throw off the entire schedule.”
Stanley opened his mouth to say something else but decided against it. Mike simply watched with curiosity as the smaller boy sat beside him. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes while he tucked his legs beneath him and his shoulder bumped against Mike’s. “I’m Eddie. That’s Stanley. He’s training to be a staff member here so he can just be in the psych ward for the rest of his life while the rest of us are trying to get on with our lives.”
“I’ll tell them that I saw you kissing Bill yesterday, Eddie.”
“You’re an asshole.”
The banter had a friendly tone to it, so Mike wasn’t sure if they were being serious or not. Neither boy seemed to offended by what the other was saying and they seemed to have a playful undertone. “I’m Mike.” he said after a few moments, looking between the two boys.
“Well, why are you here, Mike?” Eddie asked, resting his chin in his hands.
“Eddie you can’t just ask people that. That’s insensitive.” Stanley interjected with what sounded like a kick under the table. This only resulted in Eddie laughing since his legs were folded underneath him on the bench.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. I--”
“Eds! Do you have any of your own clothes?” Richie’s voice came booming through the small dining area. He sat down beside Stan and Mike didn’t miss the way that Stan scooted away rom Richie a bit. Eddie made a face and tugged the sleeves of his sweater down over his hands. Richie began to tap out a rhythm on the table while he looked at the other’s seated at the table. “Where’s Big Bill and Haystack? Did they stay up all night again?”
“Probably. They’re going to hold us up, again.” Stanley muttered, brushing a loose curl away from his forehead.
“We left without them yesterday. We could probably do that again. It depends who is taking us.” Eddie explained, peering over his shoulder at the locked kitchen. “I’m starving. Did you ask them to open the kitchen, Stan?”
“Of course I asked them to open the kitchen. They told me to wait and that it wouldn’t be the end of the world if we were a couple minutes late. I already know it won’t be the end of the world because we’re a couple minutes late every day and somehow we still manage to sort of function.” Stanley explained.
Mike watched as Richie’s lower lip turned up before he pushed himself up from his seat next to Stan. “I’ll fix this.” he insisted with a smirk before his lanky limbs carried him out of the room. Eddie groaned and Stan rolled his eyes. Mike gave the other two a confused look, but he didn’t get a chance to hear an explanation before he heard Richie’s voice.
“We’re starving in there! Do you guys want us all to starve? Someone needs to open the kitchen before Eddie’s mom calls the news team on you guys for withholding food from her Eddie Bear!” Richie yelled.
“I’m going to fucking kill him.” Eddie mumbled, hiding his face in his hands. Ichie’s voice carried on throughout the unit until Mike heard footsteps coming towards them. He turned to see a man with short blond hair and some keys opening the kitchen door. The others got up and lined up outside the kitchen while the staff worker let them go in one at a time to get their breakfasts.
The staff member didn’t talk much and neither did the boys while they ate. Richie warned Mike about the food between mouthfuls of bland cornflakes mixed with honey while Eddie told him that he was disgusting. Stan had moved so he was diagonal from Richie and Eddie was across from him. This left the spot for Mike beside his roommate. He simply listened to Richie’s advice and ate his toast. His attention was brought back to the doorway when a tall, thin boy with auburn hair and dark circles under his eyes appeared. The boy sat beside Eddie and took a piece of toast off of the napkin beside Eddie’s bowl. The boy looked tired and his clothes seemed very worn. His hair almost reached his eyes and his knuckles were scarred. Mike opened his mouth to say something to the new boy, but he decided not to and instead took another bite of his toast.
“Boys! Line up! We’re leaving for school, if you aren’t lined up in the next thirty seconds then we’re leaving without you.”
“Oh, so now they want to follow a schedule.” Stanley mumbled as he took the last bite of his plain cheerios and threw away the bowl.
