So. Since I keep a list of what I´ve read anyway (there´s always a list), I will rec all the fics I´ve wholly enjoyed on a monthly basis. Old and new, canon or AU, big or small authors, long or short but nearly always Johnlock (-ish).

- I say outloud "Yeah if Goten and Trunks dont learn how to pull their punches then how are they gonna- they cant- how are they going to meet girls? Yknow? Like what if they want to meet girls? Yknow? Like they would put their hands on her and she would explode."

- my mother who has had the patience to sit through the entirely of the original dragon ball and DBZ Kai up to this point: "I guess they're just going to have to fuck each other then."

Like that old classic fake tumblr post where one user was saying that their Christian father approved of johnlock. Only it's real and my mom is just like that.

She was like "that makes sense right? it makes sense." and I had to be like "Yeah I guess it makes sense ................."

Hey, first off, this blog is incredible, and you are fucking amazing. But I’m a bit obsessed with a specific type of fic right now, and was hoping you might have a list. The basic points are this: set in medieval times/old times AU, John finds Sherlock as someone’s prisoner/captive, Sherlock is afraid of John and thinks he’s going to hurt him, John cares for Sherlock and is mortified about what happened to him.

I absolutely LOVE fics where one character is a prisoner/captive and is terrified of the other character when they first meet, but later come to trust them. It’s just such a good trope…

(Also I really like how you call everyone “nonny”. Where did that nickname come from, if you don’t mind me asking?)

AHH Thanks for your kind words!! Means so much to me, wow! I am not worthy of such love :P

To answer your second question: Ah, it was just something that came naturally, PLUS it helps people know if I'm being kind or passive aggressive, hah. I use "Nonny" as the default endearment term, because I feel like it makes people feel like they're more welcome here even if they're hiding who they are. It's meant to show that I appreciate their taking time out of their day to contact me. I use "Anon" instead if an anonymous ask comes in that's rude, demeaning, condescending, or is just plain not-cool. It lets people know beforehand that the ask the reply they're about to read is going to be me using my "I don't have time for your shit but I'm gonna say my piece anyway" response, that I wasn't happy with the content of the ask, but respectfully am refraining from calling them a shit disturber, LOL. Most people see the white text first before the reading the grey ask box, so if they see "Anon." rather than my standard "Hey Nonny!", they know I am Not Happy™ but am being a bigger person.

That said, I don't get as many these days that require me to put on my big-girl pants, LOL. And I usually just delete them if other people can't learn from them or can't find value in my response to them.

ANYWAY!

Your initial ask! Ah, I don't have any that come to mind for what you're asking for, though I recall a comic a LOOOOONG time ago where Sherlock was a captured dragon and John was a knight and he rescued him, LOL. Can't remember what it was called, oof.

Simon is just so religion-coded! I feel like we don't see enough rep for Catholic guilt or religious devotion Simon, and I want more of it. This one is open to steal if y'all want, since I know literally nothing about religion lol. (Also Mary and I might be touching on this in that Sound of Music AU we haven't messed with in... months 😅)

"Home (Edward sharp) - while in America"

One of my animatic ideas! This song is one of the ones on my snowbaz playlist and I feel like it fits so well with Wayward Son. Baz trying to communicate with Simon that Simon is his home and that "there ain't nothing that I need" besides him. Different scenes from Wayward Son playing out as the song goes on. Then the speaking part is where Baz tells Simon the story of the moment he fell in love with him 🥰

Feel free to steal this one if you want! It's a cool idea, but I don't think I'll ever actually do it lol

I really feel like this fits their dynamic. Baz as the jaded, emotionally repressed genius struggling with addiction who won't let anyone get close enough to touch. Simon as the golden retriever character who allows his empathy to shine through. He seems like he's dumb at first, but he's smart in his own ways and Baz is forced to see it. Simon slowly bringing Baz out of his shell by putting up with his BS 😆

I was a big superwholock girlie in middle school, so Johnlock still has a special place in my heart :) The dynamic does fit super well though, and I'd love to see it as art, a comic, or a fic! Feel free to steal this if it speaks to you :)

"Mashup song from Simon’s playlist with one from Baz’s playlist for max emotional fuckery"

This idea came from one of our emergency dance parties in the Discord :) Mary showed us a mashup one of her old classmates made (brilliant, showstopping), then Emma suggested we do a fandom song-mashup event, and I was like "OH SHIT!"

Can you imagine though??? Pull the most angsty songs from Rainbow's Simon and Baz playlists and have the song switch between the two. We hear Simon's self-doubt and trauma and then cut to Baz's longing 😭

Like, Helplessness Blues and August? Going Invisible 2 and Earlier Days? Or even better, take one of the songs that show up in both playlists with different singers (A Case of You and Riches and Wonders) and have it switch between the two voices at the parts which are most emotionally impactful for each person (or have both play at the same time!)

This one I'm almost certainly going to do at some point, but I also would not mind seeing other people do them 👀

Instead, I'll count the last song I played on purpose, and that would be In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel because everything he did went hard as fuck

Last movie: Mamma Mia, if only to introduce my parents to the majesty that is Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgard all drunk out of their minds, singing ABBA songs. It's not my favorite movie of all time, but it does have a soft spot in my heart

Currently reading: So many things. Currently consuming: dark chocolate, specifically Ghirardelli 60% baking chocolate. It's my writing snack and my guilty pleasure that I don't feel that guilty about

Currently craving: whatever my mom is making for dinner, which I can already smell from downstairs. A good night's sleep (or a better sleeping schedule). A box of matches so I can light a candle in my room. More time and motivation to write. A song that scratches every itch in my brain and also never gets old so I can listen to it on repeat for the rest of my life. Water, because my water bottle is empty. To live life to its absolute fullest (okay Hob, calm down)

Three ships

Hm, I will tell about my most recent one, the one I've written the most about, and the one that got me into writing fanfic and making fanart.

The latest: Nygmobblepot! Edward Nygma/Oswald Cobblepot from Gotham. Well, what can I say? Sad, mentally ill and murderous men, what's not to like? They have an interesting relationship, and I like to see it being explored more in many different forms.

The one I've written the most: Willton, Frederick Chilton/Will Graham from Hannibal. Even though this is the ship with the highest amount of words by me, it's still only somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 words. I'm a beginner, but hopefully getting better all the time! I admit, this one isn't very popular. I like NBC Hannibal's Chilton as a character a lot, and I personally think he needs some other character to develop himself. Will gives us contrast, with his cool calculations and violent mind compared to Frederick's neuroses and anxieties.

The beginning: Good old Mystrade. Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade from BBC Sherlock. I'm a sucker for emotionally suppressed middle-aged men. I suppose I could explore my own experiences through them - anxiety, depression, self esteem issues. Older queer people have always made me hopeful, and even though it really isn't the same, sometimes fictional characters work as a substitute.

First ever ship

Huh, I am not absolutely sure, but I guess this would be Johnlock. I remember seeing one of the older Sherlock Holmes films when I was younger, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, 1970, and Holmes implying Watson and he were lovers felt surreal, almost. This one was an old film for a young kid such as myself, and there they were, queer, and it wasn't only a joke, we were not only portrayed as comic relief. Obviously it was somewhat humorous (Holmes trying to avoid fathering a child for Madame Petrova), but they didn't make it seem like queer people were lesser. In a way, I felt understood - that's what not having obvious actual queer representation causes - and it stayed in the back of my mind for a long time.

Now, thinking about the ships I've now told about, I realise I (often along with other people) have headcanoned one person of the pair as asexual, even though I've only known I'm ace myself for a very short time, comparatively.

Last song

I've been listening to Hannibal the Musical and Possibly in Michigan (Animal Cannibal). Completely normal and sane songs to listen to, I can assure you.

Last movie

I watched The Lady in the Van with my parents last night. It was quite amusing, both light-hearted and serious at the same time. Before that, The Batman (2022), which I didn't like as much as some of the other Batman films, but it was quite decent.

Currently reading

Haha, I'm not currently reading anything, really. The last actual book I read was the Shining by Stephen King some weeks ago. It was much better than the film, which I watched right after, although not scary at all.

Currently watching

Gotham (2014-2019). Finding television series that can keep me watching is not the easiest task, I guess. Usually I only like a few characters, and try to resist the urge to only see their scenes as long as I can.

Well, I should be getting an evening snack, but I'm writing this. Going to get an apple and some mango gurt with rice cereal.

Currently craving

This is a bit in the TMI territory, but the ability to feel strong emotions, and for once not anxiety. I feel very empty most of the time. Fortunately I have Petunia the blue tongue skink. I also would like to learn Swedish and get even more herps.

The Second Encounter / Small Johnlock comic.

Yesterday was cleaned and closet and found some old sketches of several of my OTP, and I found this little comic. This is as always an AU Johnlock comic friends.  A short and fast comic ...@_@ I'm lazy and bad to draw, sorry u_u Well, I think the story was something like this ...

Introduction.

The Holmes Family and the Watson Family have long been friends. The Watson live in Scotland and the Holmes in Wales. One Christmas, the Watson were invited to spend New Year in the Holmes mansion, and there the young Watson at fifteen, met the youngest of the Holmes. Their first encounter was surprising for both of them giving a kind of singular attraction between both.

The years passed the young Watson became an excellent student and athlete getting a full scholarship to study medicine in Cambridge. To the 20 entered the Real Military College to specialize like Medical Military. The youngest of the Holmes entered the 16 to the University of Oxford. At 25 he already had a Doctorate in Chemistry. At the University, he meets Molly Hopper, her best friend and confidant who is a Pathology Specialist Student.

At the age of 30 Dr. Watson worked in the Hospital of San Bartolome, where he met his friend and colleague Dr. Mike Stamford and his bride and later wife Nurse Mary Mortsan.

Sherlock Holmes lived in London and worked as a Detective Consultant resolving cases for Scotland Yard by D.I. Greg Lestrade. During a dangerous case, Holmes is injured and is transferred to the Hospital of San Bartolome, being attended by John Watson, both feel that connection again, to the degree of being attracted to one another. John decides to put distance between him and Sherlock, since he is a married man. Sherlock falls into desperation, but his brother Mycroft intervenes to prevent him from doing something crazy.

Two years go by and Mary's wife becomes seriously ill and dies. Rosie Watson is 4 years old when her mother dies. When Rosie is 6 years old, Sherlock decides to recover the communication with John, and it succeeds. Both become very close. Over time both become official partners.

The rest happens in the background, both live together, marry and live crazy and happy days etc, etc.

How in the world did people make fandom discourse about Dont Hug Me I'm Scared???

When there is a fandom, there is discourse, my friend.

Now, back in the days of DHMIS 2, when it was just Notepad and Tony the Talking Clock, a tumblr user (aishaneko, I believe their handle was, they've deactivated since) created gijinkas of the puppets (humanizations in today's lingo). Then modmad made comics of these two and suddenly, DHMIS' cult popularity went through the ROOF. I'm talking fic, cosplay, art - because people started shipping these two. They were called Padlock, thoroughly confusing some Sherlock fans, Johnlock and non-Johnlock shippers alike. Who the fuck in the show was named Pad and why the fuck were people shipping them with Sherlock? It also thoroughly confused people in the regular ol' padlock fandom. You know, as in, the locks. Why were they seeing a lady with rainbow hair and a guy with a sword in the tag? But that's the small stuff. I've yet to get to actual discourse.

The insane popularity of Padlock went so wild that it reached the creators of DHMIS. In fact, it was one of the stepping stones to their funding campaign! DHMIS was first funded out of pocket by the creators, that was why Creativity and Time were so far apart but the rest of the series came out nearly yearly, if not months apart. We also got photos of the creators printing and putting up Padlock fanart in their office, it was very sweet.

DHMIS' campaign went on to be a big success, and we got the other parts, but while the series was still going on, there were stirrings around tumblr. The issue: humanizations vs. puppets.

Some puppet-only fans were mad that people made humanizations of DHMIS characters, which at this point was very commonplace due to the popularity of the very first ones. A lot of people were also introduced to DHMIS bc of the humanized padlock fanart, so when they made fanart, they drew them human too.

It got NASTY. With anon hate and discourse in the reblogs and everything. I was one of the people caught in the crossfire, as I was a big humanization fan (but I still liked the puppets! I just wrote fic about the humanizations because it was fun). I withdrew from the general fandom around that time, but I still did fanart and fic with my friends, and we often jokingly called puppet-only fans as the 'object puritan' side of the fandom. Don't know if that ever spread to the wider fandom.

TL;DR: DHMIS fans discourse whether people should depict the characters as humans or puppets. Got nasty as it usually did back in old tumblr days.

Oh gosh, this is honestly a tough one, since I've been here for a long time and I've honestly had more good times than bad!

Hmm. Offline, I'd have to say going to 221b Con and meeting like-minded people, and spending a whole weekend just indulging in it. I've been to 2 and a half of them (the very first one I went to, our flights got cancelled because of a snowstorm and couldn't go until Saturday). I really miss going to them, but I'm still uncomfortable being in a crowded space after 2 years of NOT being in it, and my flight anxiety is even worse. Plus I don't even want to think about crossing the border at the moment. It makes me sad, and makes me wish there was a Canadian alternative (is the writer's retreat still a thing? I should go to one of those as moral support LOL). A focussed con is so different from a Comic Con, and it was lots of fun. Plus I got to be on a few panels, and met some people I adore from online.

Online, I'd have to say my old Saturday Night Watchalongs. I REALLY miss doing them, and I REALLY just loved spending 6 to 8 hours all Saturday with a bunch of people to just excited about movies and shows together. That fell apart in around 2019 after Rabbit shut its doors. I never found a replacement that worked well for everyone, and one that especially worked well for a host on a MacBook. It was depressing. I've been thinking for a year now of trying to start it back up, but similar to the way Sumatra is run (basically, everyone runs their own film and we're all just in a chat room), but on Discord. Thing is, mine was "successful" because I provided both the movie and the chatspace via Rabbit. I miss it.

Nowadays, I have to say it's the sense of community my blog creates. I love being a Curator of Fandom Things, and just being a Big Sister for folks "coming in late" to the fandom, and I like offering things I enjoy to you guys, and offering my life experiences where relevant. I like being a blog where people – fandom olds and fandom news – can come and feel comfort regardless of ship or whatever fandom they're a part of. I still feel really unmoored these days, though. I have a hard time making and keeping friends 🤷‍♀️

Ah, it’s all good! Nonny was only saying things I already have been trying to work on for awhile, so I’m not bothered, LOL. You can’t please everyone, and there’s always room for improvement, so I just take it all in stride. But thank you! Yeah, I want to develop a flat-colouring style, I just feel like I can’t make it look nice like everyone else. I’m constantly comparing my art to others and the cycle continues. C’est la vie, LOL. I do love the old comic book styles too <3
