La~La~la 🦇 anon here with a sagau idea!
I don't play genshin with sound on, I always have my headphones on and sing to some songs while I play witch got me thinking.....
What if reader started singing viva la vida/once upon a december or another song really well and it just so happened that they had characters who are really musical like venti Barbra and xinyan in their party?
It would start out really sweet like them complimenting their creators voice and vibing along, then turn into them trying to write songs that are more like our modern ones!
Venti accidentally inventing an acoustic ballad or smthn (I used almost all my spoons for the first half..)
xinyan making an unholy amalgamation of classic and rock
And Barbra trying out new scales while writing songs about the creator who has the voice of an angel and godly pitch
For a good idea of what I'm thinking try listening to, Viva La Vida (orchestral version) from annapantsu!
(Feel free to add )
OHOHOHOHOHO, 🦇 ANON YOU ARE COOKING.
I need to start crawling out of my hole and listen to the song you're recommending to me ASAP—holy cow, I live under a mountain at this rate (I'm like Azhdaha bro this is NOT good 😭 Watch me run with this blindly bc I keep FORGETTING to listen to the recommendations 🦇 Anon is sending me—)
I won't add any other characters, since the selection you have is already good!
Venti, Barbara, and Xinyan Wanna Jam, Too!
(Warning: Might be OOC!)
Venti
WISP BOI SHOOKETH. HE IS WHOOPING AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS. MONDSTADT IS GOING CRAZY WITH THIS BARD IN TOWN GOING AROUND ABOUT THE CREATOR—
All jokes aside, he's over the moon to know that about your singing and your song preference. I feel like Venti would try to make his version of the songs you sing :D
By the time you meet in person, man's hands down worshipping your singing like his LIFE depends on it.
"Oh, Your Grace! Please sing your songs for all of Mondstadt to enjoy!" You can hear the literal excitement practically radiating in his voice.
He's very stoked and will sing along if you do decide to sing. Watch him brag this to the other archons (cough Zhongli and Ei mainly cough)
Barbara
The moment she heard the Almighty Creator sing, she thought both you and Barbatos blessed her. I mean, the winds, carrying your voice, to her?!
She's utterly shocked. She doesn't know if she's worthy of hearing your voice—But Barbara loves your voice! Of course the Almighty Creator would have the best voice of all of Teyvat!
She once caught herself humming the song you were singing to previously in the Church of Barbatos. Barbara was so embarrassed because the others managed to catch her humming that strange tune.
When you came around, Barbara was immediately the first one to ask you to sing—albeit a little timidly.
"Y-Your Grace! Uhm...Is it possible if you allow us Nuns at the Church to...hear you sing? Of course, you don't have to agree! We can sing the song ourselves if you wish!" Barbara just really wants to let you know that Mondstadt worships and adores you.
She would definitely make a choir version of the songs you sing. Be prepared to be invited and no, you're insisted to come. By everyone. :)
Xinyan
The first moment she heard you jam, she was loving it! Utterly loves the genre of music she hears from you!
From where she grew up (Liyue), there were some people that were very picky with their taste in music and usually called her rock'n roll a ruckus. To hear you sing something without a care in the world to a song that doesn't really fit to the usual old geezer's standards was utterly refreshing!
Sometimes, when she's given the honor of the stage, she would perform some performances to you and perform a rock'n roll version of the songs you sing. She has a musician's ears after all, she would remember how the riffs go and remix them to fit her style.
When you arrive, you better go out and listen! Xinyan would absolutely credit you and (if your up to it) sing alongside you!
"Haha, Your Grace! You're here—wanna hear my rock'n roll version of your songs?" She's good at remixing, it's almost unfair—
Yeah, none of them realize any of the songs you sang weren't your creation. Good luck explaining to them :)

heyy! can i get 6, 10 and 13 for the song asks? <3
Hi there!! Sure thing, Anon! 💕
6. Song that makes me feel like i could kill god
😂😂 I'm not sure if I'm ever this confident but I think I'd have to go with: "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin (1975)
youtube
This song is unbelievably epic and definitely fills me with some false confidence.😅 Makes me feel like I'm in some fantasy world fighting dragons or something. It's one of the songs in the playlist I used to listen to when walking to school to take exams, back when I was a student!
Honestly, there's a lot of songs from Zeppelin that make me feel this way!
10. Song I just found and that I love
Ohhh this is a fun one! I've actually been doing a better job lately of looking for new music/trying to branch out from my regular albums so I actually have an answer to this😅
"All in Good Time" by Iron & Wine, featuring Fiona Apple
youtube
I love both Iron & Wine and Fiona Apple, so I was so stoked when I found this!! It's so beautiful! Great lyricism too. The line "You wore my ring until it didn't fit" has been rooted in my brain ever since I heard it.
13. Song that should be in a movie
I puzzled over this one for a while because there are just sooo many good options. But after much thought, I've got to give this one to "Daughter" by Beyoncé!
youtube
I really love all of Cowboy Carter, but this song is my favorite. (And did I potentially get some KSFM Lily vibes from it? Maybe?😅)
It's absolutely beautiful but also SO cinematic. I can see it being used to incredible effect in a dramatic movie scene!
Thanks for sending these!!! Lots of fun!

Okay, I only have so much to go off of right now but I couldn't wait to make a 'playlist', so bear in mind that these are more vibes focused and might not be accurate, but here are some songs 'hearing problems' makes me think of (that are pretty thematic to the old-timey pirate setting, honestly):
Song - artist (who/what the connection is)
Tale of the Shadow - Sail North (Helena or Karimi)
Siren's Song - Brave the Sea (Helena)
Sea of Thieves - Stormfrun (Lyon, Janx, Shanks, just all around pirate adventure song)
Scalliwag - Gaelic Storm (suits so many things. Pirate adventures. Running away. Romancing. References being known by the music you play)
Bitter Water - the oh hellos (Karimi X mihawk)
Dear fellow traveller - Sea Wolf (Karimi X Mihawk)
Boreas - the oh hellos (one of my fav songs right now, kind of Karimi, I think?)
Liar - the Arcadian Wild (idk man, angst)
All I've ever known - Hadestown (Karimi X Mihawk, from both of their perspectives)
Habits - Genevieve stokes (Karimi. The song repeats a chorus about "you go and I'll stay, it's always right person and wrong way, I hate to be right please tell me I'm wrong, please tell me I'm wrong" begging to be wrong about it this time but knowing that she won't be because it's still the same story over again, which fits Karimi and her father, Karimi and her grandma, and could be Karimi begging that this time she's wrong about it with Mihawk. Also the other verses could fit Karimi pretty well I think)
Bones in the ocean - The Longest Johns (or Vampirate Odessa for a female cover) (idk just something about desparately searching for the people you lost and thought you failed at the cost of yourself only for them to save you and tell you to live)
Also, any Crane Wives song, but in particular; never love an anchor, safe ship harboured, allies or enemis (all Mihawk X Karimi), Here I am (Karimi and Lyon), Icarus, Ribs, Tongues and Teeth (all Karimi)
And the best for last;
Inkpot Gods - the Amazing Devil
Oh my GOD the Karimi ANGST this song gives. (Also a touch of Mihawk X Karimi bc it's sung by a male and female voice)
"what you hear isn't laughter after all, it's just your voice learning for once to stand up tall" (male voice)
"and if she doesn't have the will, but it seems the whole world does, I'll stay because I'll be the man my father never was" (male voice)
"and what you hear is not silence, it's just the trees waiting to hear what next you'll hum" (female voice)
"And to those gods I will speak bluntly.... Please rest assured that you might not fear a man, but to a woman by the end you'll kneel and plea, cause I'm more than what my mum taught me" (female voice)
"And I can hear her sing, and I know she's given up, and I don't know what to do, how to help her, how to bring her home" (male voice)
"And I can hear him break, and he doesn't understand, and I wish that I could take his hand but where I'm going is for me and me alone" (female)
"And I can hear her singing, "if I don't make it back from where I've gone just know I've loved you all along"" (male voice, then female voice joins in and they harmonise together to sing the promise)
I haven't been able to listen to all of them yet, but the ones I have, (Tale of the Shadow, Siren's Song, Sea of Thieves, Dear Fellow Traveler, Boreas, Inkpot Gods), and on all of the above, very much yes, yes, yes.
Also thank you for the new shanties, I love sea shanties so much it's stupid 😍🙏❤️❤️
I HAVE to spotlight Bones in the Ocean, because it was already my song for Lyon. The firefight with the Marines that killed Karimi's mother also destroyed his first ship and killed the majority of his crew (fifteen apart from himself before the battle). The admiral overseeing the Marine warship was Vesper, who already had his suspicions that Lyon was Helena's child (the family resemblance is STRONG) and had every intention of either taking him alive for questioning or killing him if he refused to surrender, but Garp was also aboard the ship as the second in command. The entire crew, including his infant daughter, likely would have perished if Garp hadn't intervened. Ended up knocking out Vesper with a good strong left hook to the temple, calling for ceasefire, and letting Lyon and the handful of surviving crew (Janx, the cook Wren, the navigator Hizashi, and the doctor Clara) escape on a dinghy. They were luckily not far out from the next island their Log Posse was pointed toward. Garp was put on probation for a year for insubordination, and the incident left Vesper fiercely suspicious of Garp; ultimately Vesper found the coordinates for Conch Cove due to this suspicion years later, on searching through Garp's office while both were stationed at Marineford. Lyon doesn't know every detail where Garp is concerned, only knows that Garp was on the Marine ship, which definitely did not help their already rocky relationship. Lyon still thinks about that day a great deal, still has nightmares about it, everyone he lost, everything he could have done differently to prevent it. All those bones in the ocean.
Plot a course to the night to a place I once knew, To a place where my hope died along with my crew, So I swallow my grief and face life's final test,To find promise of peace and the solace of rest
Now that I'm staring down at the darkest abyss, I'm not sure what I want, but I don't think it's this, As my comrades call to stand fast and forge on, I make sail for the dawn 'til the darkness has gone
He easily would have plunged into unbridled grief if it hadn't been for the responsibility of his child and Janx dragging him out of the abyss.
My own song for Mihawk and Karimi is "Medusa in Chains" from The Fratellis (been hyperfixating on this band for going on four months, no idea why but they fuel my writing and I'm not questioning it). Mihawk having been a lone wolf for so long, valuing control over his life and himself above all other things, and suddenly this annoying little brat is making him feel things, and he just doesn't know what to make of it. His desire to remain in control is in combat with a newfound want to let go and just let the chips fall where they may. The entire ordeal is injuring his pride. Keeps telling himself that she's nothing more than his property, a tool, but as much as he wants to keep things impersonal, he finds it harder and harder not to be intrigued by her.
Eyes wide, tongue tied, she replied, "I'm lost inside"
I'm not your miracle man, I'm not your spirit guide, Before this whole thing began I had some sense of pride, Just one more night with your lips, your company is hard to eclipse
Weak-kneed, yes indeed, guaranteed, Make my heart bleed
Give me a reason to breathe, don't let my sun go down, I'll make you stand and recieve, I'll be your sacred ground, Be my Medusa in Chains, petrified, Only your beauty remains
Just try your best to forget how I once made you crawl, Just one more swing of your hips, I love the way your confidence slips
You should be outlawed, Dear God, Every single breath I applaud
Aaaaaand while I haven't explored their dynamic in the fic yet (but will be a few chapters down the road), there's also "Laughing Gas" by The Fratellis where the mentor-student/father-daughter relationship between Shanks and Karimi is concerned. He really genuinely cared about her and didn't want to see her leave the crew, felt like she's much too young to be bearing the burdens that she's been saddled with by herself, but she insisted that her goals were something she had to deal with alone.
In your own sweet time you'll see, Your neuroses unwind, There'll be no rain on your parade, There'll be no devils on your mind
So, darling, break out the laughing gas, You and I know this joke soon will pass, Give me your last request, And I'll see what I can do, To paint your grey skies blue, Before I pass, That's all I ask, Break out the laughing gas
Take all your ideals and well told tales, I know a prayer that never fails, Don't hold your breath, you dreamed this dream well, Just click your heels and you'll soon break this unholy spell, This hell, is only a story you tell
So, break out the laughing gas, Let go, let this soap opera be your last, Set all these fools on fire, Why should you not have all that you desire
I've got so many more it isn't even funny, but I'm leaving it with this for now or I'm going to be here all night.
Also I may end up reblogging and replying to this again once I've listened to the rest of the songs, music is as big a thing for me as writing so I'm king of squealing about this entire ask, like thank you so much for sending this 😭❤️

Thing is, we all were pretty stoked for Harry to do this movie with Olivia initially. I don’t think she had a bad rep at all before this stunt. Everyone kind of vibed with her old roles and pretty chill personality. I think HQ also thought we’d be fine with her as a beard if Harry had to have one (as most larries understand shit like this is kind of inevitable right now and deal with it) as her style is similar to Harry, she SEEMED to be a cool feminist, she actually had a job (unlike certain dog walkers and wanna be models). But it’s like, they just miscalculated everything. From the optics of the shit boss/employee thing, to her bad feminist takes, to her annoying spotlight need. But overall, now that it’s gone this long, I think there’s less damage to Harry and I think GP is still where we used to be. Maybe not knowing a bunch about her, but seems cool and fine. So I don’t think this harms him to the public. We aren’t fans of it though. But we aren’t the audience. They don’t care about us. And also why I think this’ll go the whole time to dwd release. I think they’ve needed to go this far to make it more legit. I think they’ll have to go to the end. Also because of the album and tour. I think Harry needs her. As much as we say it’s all her. It’s not. I think he needs her image and cover for a lot of his shit coming up. Songs, tour beard, movie promo, MP, etc.
Oh, for sure he's getting something out of it. If this album really is about domesticity and long term, "mature" (and heterosexual) love, that's what she's the for. He doesn't need her for name recognition, he's got that on his own. What she needs from him is just a whole lot more obvious because she's milking every last second of it and clinging to him like a barnacle. But, yeah... they're both in this stunt for their own reasons.
But she truly could have had it all if she hadn't pushed so hard. This fandom wanted to like her. We were all excited when he signed on to the film. But the more she was in the spotlight, the more her true colors showed.

[ARTICLE] BLACKPINK Talk 'The Album': "The Spotlight Shed On K-Pop Is Just The Beginning"
credit: TANU I. RAJ - The GRAMMYS Website
At some point during the conversation, the topic of the pressure of being BLACKPINK comes up. There’s a short silence on the other end of the call. Starkly different from the effervescent laughs until then, it’s pregnant with introspection as the four members of BLACKPINK—Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo and Rosé—think about the title that’s most often associated with their name: "The Biggest Girl Group In The World."
It isn't hyperbole, either. A look at the numbers is enough to prove that. Within 24 hours of its release earlier in June, the first pre-release single from The Album, "How You Like That," broke five Guinness World Records. With 86.3 million views in that time, it became the most viewed YouTube video and the most viewed music video in the world. "How You Like That" also debuted at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, tying with Lady Gaga’s "Sour Candy"—a song the group featured on—making BLACKPINK the highest-ranking female Korean act at the time.
Earlier in 2019, the quartet became the first K-pop group to hit 1 billion views on Youtube with their single "Kill This Love." They followed it up with a sizzling performance of the single at Coachella, making history again as the first K-pop girl group to do so.
Along with the weight of the epithet, thus, the title encompasses a vast journey that the quartet has covered in just a fraction of the time it takes established acts—four years to be precise. So, excuse the members of BLACKPINK for taking a couple seconds to reflect, please.
"It's very surprising to us," Jennie says at last. "Every day we try to acknowledge how grateful we are, but more than the pressure, we are ready to give them back as much as they [their fans, BLINKs] gave us. It just gives us more motivation to go further than we ever dreamed of."
If you’ve been acquainted with the BLACKPINK ethos, you will have seen this coming. For the better part of four years, the members of BLACKPINK have stood tall on the backs of the self-assured, self-aware messages in their music. Whatever the challenge, the BLACKPINK way is to always go up. Now, as they get ready to reacquaint themselves with the world with their first full-length release, The Album, the same determination abounds.
"We tried to put more colors into our music, say black and pink," says Lisa. "I wish each member has a stronger presence on the stage and explores more various genres. I hope people don’t know what to expect from us, except for something better than before. We want to be unpredictable."
Ahead of the release of The Album, GRAMMY.com sat down with BLACKPINK to discuss their career, achievements, motivations and future.
BLACKPINK's Rapid Rise | For The Record
This is going to be your first full-length album after your debut, so the hype is very real. What was the mood when you heard it was happening?
Rosé: At the very start, when they said that we were going to [be releasing] our first album, we were very stoked, because we do know that our fans have been waiting for this moment for a very, very long time. We were very excited but also nervous at the same time because we do know that it is a big deal. It's the first time we were able to put all of our colors into something. We had mixed feelings, but overall it was very positive vibes, and we were very stoked to be able to finally release the full album.
The Album is coming after almost four years of your debut, which is a long time. Why do you think that this is the right moment for it?
Rosé: We had four years to kind of build our own colors as BLACKPINK. Throughout the four years, we got to explore different genres and really find out our exact, distinct colors. So, I feel like [in] this album, we were able to put our prepared music style and contribute with new music genres that we're still exploring recently. [That's why] I think now is the best time to come out, because any later would be too late and any earlier, we might have been in a rush. We definitely feel like, right now, we are fully ready to put out a full completed album.
How do you think this album represents the kind of artists you are? How does it represent your colors?
Jennie: I think we've said this before, but our new album is full of surprises. We like to believe that it's something no one has tried before. We just want to bring something new. The album is cool, you know, and we tried to put together all the colors of BLACKPINK that we've built before into one.
You started this year with some amazing collaborations. What do you look for while working with other artists? Where is that middle ground between your style and their style?
Jennie: Since there are already four of us, we're very adjusted to working with people, so somebody new is always welcome. They bring a new perspective to the group, and it's an amazing experience. It's like stepping outside of our usual boundaries and into a world that we haven’t been to. To create something new with a great artist, like Lady Gaga and Dua [Lipa] and much more to come, it's just a great chance for us as artists and groups.
How was working on The Album different to working on your previous EPs? The Album is more cohesive, it's longer; there are more songs, more opportunities. What was that like?
Rosé: Definitely, because it's not like separate projects that we were working on. In the past, when we were working on individual projects, it was mainly all about that "one" song or that "one" concept that we were coming out with. But, because this was an album, we really had to think about the flow and the meaning behind this. I feel like this time around, we do have personal songs in there, something that tells our story, something that is fun.
And since our name is BLACKPINK, we represent the diversity in our personalities as individuals and as artists. So, we feel like we really had to put that forward and address that as well as we could.
You told me how the album went from concept to final form and how you showed your colors; are there any parts of the production process that you paid special attention to?
Rosé: I feel like we stayed in the studio for a while. We didn't want to just have a bunch of tracks and songs written for us and for us just go and record. We did spend a lot of time in the studio trying to find what we really wanted to sing about, what kind of music we wanted to put out. It took us a while to get together a list of good songs so we could get into recording mode. That's the really big process: just hanging out in the studio and making sure we have fun there so we can be honest.
Let's talk a little bit about your recent achievements. You've broken records that at one point a lot of people thought were unachievable, especially for Asian artists. You performed at Coachella, you’re the most followed K-pop act on YouTube, "How You Like That" broke so many records right after its release. In context of all that, the pressure of being BLACKPINK must be so intense.
Jennie: It's very surprising to us. All the records are the results of our fans, BLINKs, and their unconditional support. Every day we try to acknowledge how grateful we are, but more than the pressure, we are ready to give them back as much as they gave us. It just gives us more motivation to go further than we ever dreamed of.
There's always a line between the persona and the person, so how do you make sure that the expectations people have of you are realistic, that what is going on in your professional life is either a reflection of who you are or a separation from it?
Jisoo: We are grateful, as artists, as individuals, that people have such big expectations of us, and we are ready to take on the burden that comes with the expectations. We chose to do this: we try to send that message in our music, to show our confidence and the boldness to take on the challenge.
I feel like you’ve gone beyond the concept of a traditional girl group now. BLACKPINK is not just a name, it’s sort of become a force of nature where everybody knows who you are. With a position like that, there's always a danger of thinking: "I'm fine here. I'm good. This is comfortable." The position limits growth. How do you guys ensure that you always keep on reinventing?
Rosé: While we are very grateful for the amount of things that we have achieved and everything that follows this, we are just four girls who always really loved music and we just enjoyed performing. So [staying] creative is not too hard, because once we do one thing, we are always looking at the next thing, always dreaming of things that we have always wanted to do. But we definitely don't settle with what we have right now. We're all very greedy when it comes to. [Laughs.]
Jennie: We have each other to look and be inspired by. We let each other know what we're doing and where to head.
Lisa: We're like the same person.
Rosé: I think all of our members try to remind each other of how we're all just human. The hype, we try not to let it get to us. We don't really go: "Oh my god, we broke these many records or da di da..." We just look at each other and like…
Jisoo: We're just happy with how far we've come.
How do you think you've grown since your trainee days?
Rosé: We definitely have become a little more professional when it comes to this job, I guess? When we were trainees, we were only training for the music. This job is actually a job.
Jennie: There is much more stuff to care about than just music, but to carry ourselves as somebody to influence or [somebody to] look up to.
Lisa: We just enjoy every little step of it, and when we're off camera, we're pretty much like, still four girls.
Rosé: Teenage girls. [Laughs.]
Tell me how you're going to relax after the album comes out. Will there be a party, or a girls' night in?
Rosé: The crazy thing is right after our album releases, we're going to be promoting it and trying to get as much content out there for our fans. Definitely there will be a celebration at some point, but I still think we will be at working mode.
Jennie: But an excited working mode, since our fans have the album in their hand.
Lisa: [From the back] We're workaholics!
Rosé: And our biggest celebration is kind of like, staying at home in bed. Sleeping all day, so that's going to happen, hopefully.
A lot of your plans for promotion might have been thrown off course with COVID. How does this synergy with fans affect your performance? What are you expecting this time around?
Jisoo: Even though the opportunity for us to meet our fans in person has decreased, we're very grateful for social media at this point. I actually feel like since we do have social media we have more of a platform to connect with our fans on a bigger scale, so we're grateful for that at this point in time. We just hope to reach out to our fans and give them more hope through our music and content.
You guys are in a position where you are some of the people spearheading the modern K-pop expansion. Since your debut, we have seen K-pop grow so much. What kind of responsibility do you think you personally have towards its global expansion?
Rosé: It's amazing that K-pop is spreading around the world as a culture in itself. There are a lot of other K-pop artists out there who are trying to put out their music right now, and we are really grateful that we get to step in and be a part of that.
Jennie: Since we get such amazing opportunities and records because of the people that are interested in watching K-pop right now, we'd like to take the responsibility. We are fully committed to the work. We want to be proud when we look back on our history when we grow old.
[Rosé laughs.]
Jennie: We want to be proud of ourselves. I don't want to let ourselves down, so we put extra time, extra effort into every single thing we put out. I think that's why it takes a bit of time for us, but we really want to perfect the quality of the stuff we put out, so we can be represented to the world as a K-pop group.
Rosé: It's amazing how things are going. It's a big responsibility but a good responsibility that we have.

9 Taylor Swift Moments That Didn’t Fit in Our Cover Story
By: Brian Hiatt for The Rolling Stone Magazine Date: September 30th 2019
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift had a lot to say in our recent cover story (on newsstands now), tracing her eventful path to Lover, her political views and many other topics in a lengthy, revealing interview. There was even more to the caffeine-fueled conversation, which Swift made it through on four hours of sleep after staying up greeting fans at her parents’ Nashville house. Here are some highlights:
On releasing “The Archer” after “Me” and “You Need to Calm Down”: That’s sort of the world in which a lot of the album lives. It’s weird, because in pop, I love hooks and bop and catchy melodies so much. And I also love writing the songs you need to ugly cry to. So I really enjoy “You Need to Calm Down” and the brattiness of “damn, it’s 7 a.m.,” and then the next song being like, this is how I feel about myself in my lowest moments… It was unexpected when people liked “The Archer” seemingly sort of unanimously, I was like, What? This doesn’t happen to me. This almost feels like foreign and strange.
On Lover‘s place in her catalog: Reputation was so far from what I usually do. And Lover feels like a return to the fundamental songwriting pillars that I usually build my house on. It’s really honest; it’s not me playing a character. It’s really just how I feel, undistilled. And there are a lot of very personal admissions in it. And also, I love a metaphor. I love building on the metaphor for a very long time. You know, the whole of Reputation was just a metaphor, but this is a very personal record. So that’s been really fun.
Writing the title track of Lover: I was sitting up at the piano up in my loft, and I had the chorus. It just kind of happened immediately. It was one of those ones that I wrote very very, very quickly. And I was working out the cadence of the first verse and it just sort of fell together. But then I took some time to write the bridge because I wanted to really level up with that bridge. That one would for me be less of a ranting bridge and more of a story-time fable type bridge. Sometimes I like to imagine a bridge as like a sort of fairy-tale lullaby fable expanding upon a song that has been not as detailed until that point. “Can I go where you go/ Can we always be this close forever and ever”  is less detail then when you go to the bridge and you realize like, oh, it just got really personal in the bridge. It expands on it all.
Writing “Paper Rings” We just were messing around, just wanting to make something really, really fun. And I had all these lyrics about all these funny memories of how something can start off in a really quirky way and surprise you. Like how it says, “I hate accidents, except when we went from friends to this.” So I wanted to show the quirkiness of a relationship and how it’s like, wow, this really fell together in really interesting, funny, playful, cute pieces. And now it’s something we’re both really stoked happened exactly the way it did.
On her creative burst circa 2016: I was writing constantly. And a lot of the things I was writing ended up being songs for Reputation. So after 1989, I didn’t write really anything. After I made 1989 and put it out, did all the promo stuff, went on tour... The Grammys happen, which is like this unbelievable blitz of excitement, followed by me going, “Oh my god, what am I going to make next?” I had no idea what to make next, because I was so proud. 1989 — I’m still so, so deeply proud of that record. But I was like, where do we go from here? I have no idea what comes after this. And so, when my life took a very dramatic shift, all of a sudden I knew what to make next — which is a strange dichotomy to feel like, ‘whoa, this is all really weird, twisted, dark and dramatic, but I can’t stop writing.’
I think I would have made Reputation whether or not I actually put out the album or ever made another album again. That album was a real process of catharsis, and I thought I experienced catharsis before, but I’d never had until that album, because it was creating this strange defense mechanism. And, I’d never really done that in that exact way before. The only way I’d done it in the past, was with “Blank Space,” which I wrote specifically about criticisms I had received for supposedly dating too many people in my twenties. I took that template of, OK, this is what you’re all saying about me. Let me just write from this character for a second.
On the Reputation Tour: That’s just such a fun album, Reputation. I’m so proud of how that whole process was because I’d never had an album that made more sense to people after they came to the concert. Literally people would be like, “I came to the show and now I completely love the record.” Now I get the record. Whereas before with 1989, I felt like it was such a great listen but it was harder to portray it live because when you when you see it live, you’re like, “Oh, I love that song and now she’s performing it live.” But it never had songs that came alive live.
With Reputation, I wanted to keep my head down, not say anything, but work harder than I ever worked. It was really motivational for me to just have the stadium tour to prepare for and prove myself almost. My career was in a weird spot, but still have that kind of ignite something in you to work harder, to practice longer, to think of bigger, better concepts for the live show. I was thinking, if anything can pull me out of this weird disillusionment I have with the way that things have gone in my career that I was feeling back then, I knew it would be playing live. If I could be proud of the live show and if I could feel that connection with fans, that would remind me of why I love this.
On the challenges of choreography: It’s really hard for me to memorize choreography. Dancers keep count, but I can’t memorize choreography that way. So I have to assign movement to an exact lyric. Everything in my brain has to be assigned to a lyric. Because I have to learn choreography in a way that reverts back to songwriting. My vibe is I have to rehearse so, so many times for so long that I can do the choreography without thinking about it. Because when I’m thinking about choreography, my face says it. You can see it in my eyes. There’s a fear and, like, a deadness to my eyes if I’m trying to remember choreography.
On being less caught up in chart battles: I’m just a little more chill about stuff like that now. Obviously, you want to do well, and you want to do things that people like and you want people not to make fun of you for that. A lot of the pressure that I feel in my career is just the fact that I’m compared to everything I’ve ever accomplished in the past and also new artists. I can’t live in that pressure cooker. Charts — I truly, truly do not understand how they work anymore. My friend Ed [Sheeran] is such a chart monger. He’s obsessed with how it works and the math of it. I have no idea what goes on with the math with it now, it used to be so easy. I don’t even get how, people get a big release week, because they sold T-shirts, or they sold concert tickets with their albums. It’s just very confusing. But I was stoked about the “ME!” music video getting that many YouTube views. I was like, well, that’s like, that’s something to write home about.
On the longevity of songs: I think it often takes a lot of time for people to understand how they feel about music. And I know that now because there’s a song on Red called “All Too Well” that I’m really, really proud of, and it took people about three years to note that that was one of the best songs. I didn’t see that starting to pop up when people would talk about my music until about two or three years after the album had its moment. So one thing that’s actually really comforting about music — and I know that people consume at a crazy speed now — but I think that things settle for people after a long period of time. My music kind of assigns itself to maybe a moment in somebody’s life; that’s the way that my fans usually describe it. So when you’re dealing in memory curation in a way, if they have memories that include one of my songs, they go and they live their lives and those memories become further in the past and more nostalgic to them, and the music becomes more important to them.

How one night can change your whole life ✨
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME WRITING FOR MGK. So please I ask you fans and mutuals who love him to be kind. I hope you like it. 🙊💞
It had been a fucking shit year and a half for me given, going through health issues, doctors and nurses that truly didn’t give a shit about how you felt about treatment where they’d just throw endless amounts of pills at you when you clearly tell them that you’ve done your research and other people have achieved remission through eating healthy, working out, and keeping anxiety low yet of course they don’t actually care how you feel. You are just there for them to get a buck out of you and keep the chain going. That whole experience had put me into two depressive meltdowns and to seek professional help by gaining a therapist. When I started therapy I began to realize how much resentment I held in about family members and past friends who’ve treated me like shit and i’m done being walked all over. A strained relationship with my mother. A barely existing relationship with my sister. The only person who seems to take interest in hearing me without having overly dramatic reactions is my dad yet, having a sit down conversation with him is hard so often I got left on my own. My solace in life is music and lately it had been one man that I kept going back to when I was feeling defenseless, stressed, not good enough etc. That was Machine Gun Kelly aka Colson Baker I had really taken a liking to Hotel Diablo about a year ago, something about him had intrigued me so much that I needed to hear every song and lyric. While I may have not struggled with poverty or coming from a broken home as he did, I related to his inability to express emotions the way he needed to be okay in life so he then found an outlet to channel all that rage, anger, sadness, sacredness etc into something that was not only powerful but got him out of that life of struggle, yet it also created new issues for him like finding out who his real friends are in life. Anyways, when he rapped or sang it made me say to myself; “Peyton you are gonna be okay.” an actually believing that for the first time in awhile.
While, vibing hard to Kells listening to every album as well as learning all the lyrics by heart. Started to develop favorites of his, my attitude started changing as I dove deeper into his music and overall personality. I began to appreciate how he simply didn’t care if he pissed off people as he was being his true self in the process I began to have the confidence in myself to put up or shut up and really stop letting those around me walk all over me and tell them no when they ask me to do something for them knowing they aren’t ever gonna return the favor or assuming I should do something for them just cause I’m family that’s bullshit. Within, this new feeling that i was experience maybe a little good karma came my way because I had gotten a ticket to his latest tour. It was fate or destiny I swear to god because he sold out in my town in ten minutes flat. It felt like I was rewarding myself for really working on my self but also the angels above putting something positive in my life for the first time in a long time and I was so thankful!
The day was here, October 13th came fast and I was so excited that I was getting this opportunity to see him live and I am stoked. Now, given that my mother asked me to use my car that day, I ended up telling her she could take it but to drop me off early at the venue and I would just chill all day before the concert. It wasn’t an issue, the venue had a hotel on the premise as well as a restaurant, bar, cute outdoor beer gardens and wooden areas to explore. I had chosen to go to the bar and order some lunch and sit up at the bar and read for awhile.
“Hi, yes could I order the cheese burger with tots please.” I ask nicely to the bartender. She pressed the buttons on the order device and smiled back at me. “Of course. Your order should be up in a minute hun.” she said in a pleasant tone and walked off. I had put my purse up on the counter and dug out my book which happened to be a book about Jimi Hendrix and his life. I’ve always been drawn to musical types I guess, my want for caring for those who struggle and need support somehow has always been attached to people I find interesting. “Here you go love,” the bartender places down my order and my drink as I thank her nicely and turn my page popping a tot into my mouth getting lost in the words yet it stops when I hear
“Do you mind if I sit here?”
I don’t even look up from my book, and nod happily. As I pick up my drink to take a sip I look up and see him. Machine Gun Kelly sitting next to me. My heart started beating a thousand times a minute but my brain tells my body to PLAY IT COOL. As I smile at him he smiles back,  Hi. I’m Colson, what’s your name? and what are you reading?” he asks me  peeking at my book. “It’s a book about Jimi Hendrix. I am really big into music and just find people who do something in the music field interesting plus he was one of the best guitarists in the world. I’m Peyton nice to meet you.” I say, slowly swallowing still trying to keep my voice even yet on the inside I was FREAKING OUT rightfully so I think. He grins at me as his order arrives, “Yeah, he was an inspiration to me to start playing guitar.” he says picking up his burger and taking a bit. He puts it back down. Noticing a bit of ketchup on his chin I let out a little giggle as I hand him a napkin. He lets out a boastful laugh, “Oh thanks hun, damn where are my manners eating like a savage in front of a pretty girl like yourself.” I look down at the floor. “Nah, I’m not pretty I’m sure you’ve met prettier girls than me.” I say, my happy upbeat tone dropping to one of unsure and self doubt. Still looking at the floor, as I feel fingertips on my chin. He brings my face up to look at his. “Peyton, you are pretty, even beautiful there’s something so real and authentic in your eyes and that is true beauty.” he spoke with such a low but meaningful expression. Staring into those kind blue eyes of his as he is looking back at mine an explosion of a unnameable feeling is spread throughout my whole body. I let out a shy giggle even letting out a short snort, which I snapped back to reality I groaned putting my face in my hands. Colson lets out another sweet chuckle, as he pulls my hands away from my face now holding them in his. “Stop it Peyton, that what you just did was adorable. I have to ask you, will you come back to our backstage area so we can keep talking. There is this pull to you and I can’t figure it out but I need to know more about you. Please.” He spoke with such a gentle tone as his eyes pleaded with mine looking for any hint of a positive answer. I smiled, “Of course, I’ll go with you Colson. Let me pay and we can go.” I said, fishing in my purse for my wallet as I took it out. He already handled the bartender his black amex card and she had cleared the purchase. I stand up in my wedged heels bringing my short 5′3 ass to maybe 5′6, still only coming up to his mid chest looking up at him. “Colson you didn’t have to do that.” I whined, once again Colson cracks another grin looking down at me. “You’re just so adorable. Good thing I don’t mind a bit of whining you’ll learn when to or not.” he smirks at me as he cracks a dirty joke making me laugh again. We turn to leave the restaurant, his hand intertwined with mine. His hands are strong, calloused; years of playing guitar and holding a microphone for hours on end. Fingers wrapping into mine. His other hand firmly placed on the small of my back guiding me which way to go. I thought to myself, as I walked with him; “Whatever will be tonight will be and live life to the fullest.” as the lyrics from his song 27 floored my brain.

Chapter Eight: Whiplash
So there Suki was again. Rushing down the hospital corridors in an attempt to out power-walk her thoughts. Step-step-step-step-I like her body-STEP-STEP. Suddenly the day didn’t feel so hopeful. And she found herself questioning why this was bugging her so much; but even more so, why she suddenly wanted to avoid Bryce at all costs. She didn’t want to look into his eyes and think about his face as he said those words. Those dark, enigmatic mahogany eyes, probably smirking knowingly. But she definitely didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of knowing that an offhand comment like that had affected her. Not after all the lengths she’d gone to to assure Bryce she was unaffected by things like this, at least where he was concerned.
This was what she signed up for – she knew that. But still. When the only nice thing he could say about her to someone else was about her body - how it looked, what it did – well, it wasn’t exactly a confidence boost in terms of who she was as a person. And she’d thought after the fact they’d all been hanging around together as a group so much that they all gelled well and were friendly. And yeah, the other person had been teasing Bryce about having a crush on her, which he obviously didn’t, and she didn’t want him to, but he still could’ve replied saying she was a cool girl or something.
Luckily for Suki, they barely ran in the same circles at work so avoiding him was fairly easy. She only saw him in the halls a few times, and would focus her eyes on whatever chart or equipment she was holding. Every time she caught a glimpse or thought about Bryce (much more often than she cared to admit), Suki felt uncomfortable and upset. And then silly for feeling as such.
For two weeks she’d managed to ignore his texts, and the group hadn’t had time to meet, either. Part of her wanted to cave a few times, but Bryce had given up after the third nose went unanswered, clearly getting the hint. He hadn’t texted anything other than that.
Finally, she felt like she couldn’t avoid it any longer. It was consuming her thoughts too much to not do something about it. She’d just have to get over herself and either suck it up and accept she was just a warm body to Bryce, or break it off for her own sanity. So that was the plan as she texted Bryce mid-December. Which way she was erring towards… she’d figure out when the time came. Either way, she wasn’t planning on making it easy for Bryce, because whether she had the right to be or not – Suki was pissed.
Unfortunately for her, Suki was also soft and awkward and indecisive and far too forgiving. But she was going to try her best.
Santa Fe: 👃be here in 15.
Scalpel Jockey: yes ma’am 😳
When Bryce arrived he texted to let her know, since knocking would only make someone else answer the door. Suki waited until she couldn’t hear anyone in the living room and snuck over to let Bryce in. The door opened to his habitually grinning face, but Suki didn’t return the favour, instead just setting off to her bedroom and waiting for Bryce to follow.
Once Bryce had shut the bedroom door behind him and could be sure no one else would hear, he finally greeted her:
“Hey, it’s been a while…”
Well, maybe by their standards.
But Suki was already unbuttoning her blouse and shimmying her trousers down her legs. Bryce laughed, she was simply looking stoically at him as she unclothed and she hadn’t even said a word to him yet. But okay. If that was the plan.
Bryce stripped down to his underwear and perched at the head of the bed, uncertain and waiting for Suki to make the first move.
“So,” she stood at the foot of the bed in her lacy black underwear, hands curling around her waist, “do you like how I look today? How my body looks right now?”
But Bryce didn’t notice the hint, he was too enraptured by how good she looked. And by how sexy her forwardness was; first that text, then the jumping straight in. It was certainly something and Suki could tell Bryce liked it.
“Yes, I definitely do.” He crawled down the bed to her, pulling her in between his legs. That smug grin was all over his face, all through his eyes as they raked up and down Suki’s body. All in that tongue which stuck out to moisten his lips. God. That’s gotta be exactly what he looked like when he said he liked my body.
And she was pissed again, seething for god knows why, so she turned her head to the side when he moved to kiss her.
“Oh?” Bryce questioned just before he would’ve collided with her cheek.
“Actually, I’m kind of tired right now.”
“Uh, yeah, okay.” He dropped his hands from her waist and let her step back a bit. “You do realise you texted me, right?” He laughed a bit, trying to bring his usual easiness to the conversation. He was sitting at the end of the bed, legs spread and leaning back on his hands. It was proving incredibly difficult for Suki not to admire his physique, his pose, his ambience. And uh, something very obvious right in the centre of her view.
Damn it. Why did he have to be so understanding? She wanted to piss him off. She wanted him to push back a bit. Actually, she wanted to shout at him and ask him why he wasn’t fighting her on this, why he wasn’t being the asshole she had assumed him to be when she’d eavesdropped. She just wanted some strong emotion to spark, to be able to stoke the flames. Because right now it was like the chemicals in her brain had abandoned all logic or sense and the plethora of emotions whirling inside it were confusing.
But, that wasn’t the sensible thing to do.
“Yeah, I changed my mind.”
“That’s okay. I’ll just head out,” he gave her an understanding smile – for fucks sake – and stood from the bed.
She stayed where she was, crossing her arms over her chest this time and watching as Bryce dressed.
He gave her that smile again as he pulled his jeans on, but there was a slight crinkle to his brow as though he were concerned. He looked like he was biting his lip from something to say.
Suki felt bad, now. He’d been there maybe five minutes and she was already sending him home because he hadn’t even reacted in the way she’d wanted.
God Suki, grow up. You’re a twenty-seven year old doctor who is having a tantrum because her fuck buddy doesn’t vibe with her? It’s laughable. Definitely not where I thought I’d be four months ago.
He let out a concealed puzzled exhale as he looked back at Suki, and checking the coast was clear slipped out of her bedroom with a ‘I’ll see you soon?’. She didn’t see him out.
So Bryce left – even fewer words spoken between them, and Suki slumped back into bed with a long, dramatic sigh.
—-
A few days later, Suki was just coming back from delivering some good news to a patient, and was wandering down corridors. As she looked up to be sure she wouldn’t walk into anyone, Suki saw Bryce at the other end of the corridor, passing over a lady in a wheelchair to a doctor. Technically, she’d still been avoiding him for around two weeks since their last meeting barely happened. She felt the heat in her cheeks and immediately swivelled on a heel to go in the other direction.
But it was too late, moments later she was confronted by the very thing she’d been avoiding.
“Suki!” Bryce called from behind her. Immediately Suki felt herself freezing up at just the sound of his voice. But they were in public – sort-of – so she couldn’t ignore him this time.
“Hey,” she didn’t quite meet Bryce’s eyes as she turned to him.
“Are you doing okay?”
Like you care.
“Yeah, fine,” she shot out ice cold.
Bryce crinkled his brow in that same way he had before, and Suki had to scream at that little voice in her head which told her it was cute.
“Have you been avoiding me?”
Yes, yes she had. Pretty definitely.
“So what if I have?”
“I mean. Why?”
“I’m just not in the mood to see you.”
“Did I- did I do something? The other night you seemed… I don’t know. Please tell me if I upset you.”
He looked so concerned that she melted on the spot and the edge in her voice immediately disappeared.
“Look, I just- I realised it’s weird because we share a friend group but we’re not even friends.”
“We’re friends.”
She furrowed her brow, his words from before running through her head. “We are? Since when?”
“Somewhere between the list making and spending so much time as a group - I don’t know, but I like to think we are.”
Hearing him say that had made Suki pretty much forget what she’d overheard. Maybe he had been worried about her. Maybe she was overreacting and assuming or maybe she should just let herself go with the flow. After all, he’d never, ever, been cruel to her. So yeah, Suki liked that Bryce said they were friends. Agreed with him.
In fact, her heart fluttered a little at him recognising her as more than just a body.
“Upgraded from Fuck Buddy to Friend With Benefits – I like it.”
“Me too,” Bryce grinned and brought a hand up for a high five. Suki obliged. She wanted to leave her hand there, feel his beneath it, but she couldn’t. “So, we’re cool?”
And then she knew she couldn’t leave this conversation without some answers. Even if it made her look like a gigantic idiot.
She hesitated. But it was better to be upfront. And it would keep bugging her if she didn’t get the truth. Hard-ass Suki was now tucked away in a cupboard and the usual awkward, nosy, bumbling Suki was back in her place.
“There is… one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“I swear I didn’t mean to but the other week I was coming in and I heard you talking with someone else and you told them that you only like me because of my body and like that’s fine of course you’re not obliged to like me as a person but since now you’re saying we’re friends I don’t know I just wanted to like ask you since it would be weird to be friends with someone you only care about having sex with and–“
“Breathe!” Bryce cut her off with a laugh. Suki inhaled a big breath - she had a tendency to ramble when she was nervous.
“Look,” he gave her a comforting smile, “that was Ben, another surgical intern. He’s a dick. I’m not going to go round telling him anything about myself if I can help it. But I suck at lying so it had to be at least somewhat truthful.”
“Oh. Right. Yeah. That makes sense,” she nodded like a car accessory. So obviously he’d known about the surgery too, since they were in the same field. She felt stupid for jumping to conclusions.
“You’re my friend,” he reassured.
She let out a heavy exhale and a gentle laugh, wow she’d been silly. “Cool.”
“So that’s why you’ve been avoiding me, you were hurt?”
But she didn’t answer him. She didn’t need to let him know she’d been overthinking the entire thing. So she simply stepped back from him and as she moved to leave said:
“Come over after work.”
And with that Suki flounced off down the corridor to her next patient.
But she didn’t hear Bryce as she retreated, muttering: “I’m so sorry I hurt you.”
—-
Clambering up the last of the stairs to her apartment floor, Suki spotted Gia and Tommy on their way towards the stairs.
“Hey! You two doing okay?”
“Yes! Tommy’s missed you two.”
“Aw, Tommy! We miss you too!”
“When can I see Byce?” Tommy asked the two women, not quite having worked his way around ‘r’ sounds yet.
“I’m not sure hun! He’s very busy.” Suki smiled, it was nice to see Bryce had made such an impression.
“You’ve got a good man there, Suki.” Gia said.
“Oh he’s not- um- we’re not.”
“Ha, okay love. We should be off now, anyway.” She pulled Tommy up onto her hip and began to make her way toward the elevator before turning and saying softly with Tommy’s ears obstructed by her hand and chest, “he looks at you like… like I wish Tommy’s father looked at me.”
Suki’s breath hitched as the elevator doors shut on Gia’s bittersweet expression and left her alone in the corridor.
She didn’t realise until she heard the elevator coming back up to their floor that she’d been standing there for a while. Thinking about everything yet nothing.
As though in a daze, Suki floated over to the apartment and let herself in.
It had to be a desire thing right? Bryce looked at Suki like he wanted to push her against a wall at any moment – she knew that. Maybe Gia and her partner didn’t have that anymore if they ever did. That’s gotta be what she meant. In any case, she’d only seen them together very briefly when she’d picked Tommy up, so her opinion wasn’t based on much evidence. Or so Suki thought.
Before Suki even knew it – too consumed by overanalysing that one sentence – she got the text to let her know Bryce was there.
—-
Suki and Bryce laid on either side of the bed post coitus as he was telling her about a surgery he watched. There was still no mention of his assisting, but, Suki figured she’d work it out eventually.
“No way that happened. Patients don’t just ask for surgeons because they think they’re hot.”
“Oh yeah? Then how come it did happen?”
“I call bullshit.”
“You gonna try and tell me I’m not the hottest surgeon at Edenbrook?”
“I dunno… Dr Tanaka…” Suki sucked in a breath through her teeth.
Bryce looked mock offended then said: “I can’t blame you. He’s a very sexy man.”
He scooted over from his side of the bed and hovered over her, taking her jaw in his large, precise hand. He leaned down to kiss her, Suki immediately giving in and roaming her hands across the muscles on his back and shoulders. Basking in the fresh mint of his lips, the smell of his familiar cologne and a faint hint of cinnamon permeating all of Suki’s senses, she felt a little lost.
“But I think it’s safe to say this speaks for itself in terms of your preferences,” he whispered into her lips.
“Have you been baking?”
“Hm?”
“You smell like cinnamon. You usually smell more citrus-y, freshly washed towels – or is this holiday edition Lahela?”
Suki didn’t even realise she was thinking out loud until it popped out. That citrus-y, freshly washed towel scent and the peppermint on his lips was incredibly familiar to Suki. She’d thought about them in moments she probably shouldn’t have been thinking about them. She associated them with sex, of course, but also a warmth and an easy comfort. His cologne was gorgeous, it smelled expensive and perfectly balanced, mixing with the pH of his skin artfully. But there was something extra special about that underlying natural aroma. Less sexy, more familiar. Homely?
But it made her feel slightly uncomfortable in the pit of her stomach that she remembered these details so vividly, that she focused so specifically on them; even more so that she’d spoken them out loud.
“Well, I do roll around in my clean orange-scented towels just before I see you purely so that you can smell it under my expensive cologne,” he mocked.
She swatted him playfully as he began to kiss down her neck, pinching the skin with his teeth. It was just enough to be a perfectly balanced mix of pleasure and pain.
“What does Dr. Tanaka smell like?” She teased.
“Cigarettes and B.O.,” he muffled into her collarbone.
Suki’s laugh tinkled around her bedroom like chimes. “Now I know he smells sexy.”
“He’s not the one whose scent you seem to have memorised so I’m okay with that.”
“Hey! We see each other in close quarters, I’d be a bit worried if you didn’t know what I smelt like.”
“Moon lilies and cotton. Also antiseptic and that coconut hand sanitiser you use.”
Suki laughed again, as Bryce tried to hide the shock in his eyes that he’d actually just said that. But then he just grinned cockily like that was the intention.
“Well I’m glad it’s not cigarettes and B.O.”
“But to answer your question: No, I don’t bake, or cook, at all.”
“Seriously?! What do you eat?”
“Takeout, whatever’s in the hospital cafeteria, ramen.”
Suki just looked at him with horror. “Any… vegetables?”
“Yeah I always order vegetables. And I have an apple every morning.”
“Is that to keep me away?”
“What would be the point in that?” He leaned down to kiss her lips again, and once more Suki got sucked into the moment.
“Okay, okay, you should go now.”
“Probably,” Bryce looked up to Suki’s clock which read 11:08pm. “It’s later than I thought.”
They’d lost track of time talking about the most random topics, but secretly neither of them minded. —-
Five A.M. the next morning found Suki stumbling out of bed and blinking her way through her routine. Bryce had stayed way longer than he should’ve, again, and now Suki was paying for it.
She sighed as she looked at herself in the mirror, she didn’t look her best. As she crooked her neck in a stretch she felt a sensitive spot on the left side. Moving closer to the mirror to inspect and blinking more sleep from her eyes, she saw the rough purple mark. Shit.
“Bryce… what the fuck?!” She whisper-yelled to herself. “He is so getting shit for this.”
She had two options. 1. Leave it as it is. She didn’t really have time to do a botch job of covering it up and she was a doctor, she just needed to get on with the job no matter what. 2. Cake it in layers of concealer, colour corrector, and foundation so that instead of a hickey, it looked like she had a weird rash.
Given Suki’s intense aversion to anything even slightly humiliating, she went with option two. She’d forgotten how much these things actually hurt – it had been years – and Bryce had gone deep. Mottling from a deep-blackish-purple to a lighter, but still intense pinky-lilac, Suki’s neck looked pretty bad. Thankfully the area itself wasn’t too big, and so she got to work covering it up. She made sure to snap a picture first to show Bryce the exact damage he’d done.
The first few hours of work went by as usual, diagnoses, charts, tests, discharges. She knew she had to talk to Bryce about her, ahem, problem, but she wasn’t going to let something so silly take precedent over her job.
When she spotted Bryce in the atrium later she luckily had a few moments to spare. He was leaning on the desk talking to the receptionist.
“We need to talk,” she muttered behind him, pulling him along with her to somewhere more private. He rushed out a wave to the receptionist as he stumbled along after Suki. She pulled him over to the side of the atrium under the stairs. Not the most private place, but better than nothing.
“So…” Bryce said searchingly.
She huffed and moved her neck under the light, making it obvious that it was caked in cover-up. But Bryce was a typical man.
“What am I looking at? I mean, you have a very nice neck but…?”
Then she pulled out her phone and brought up the picture she’d taken as insurance this morning.
“Oh,” Bryce snorted, and actually zoomed in to the photo to get a better look.
“What are you – 16?!” She snatched her phone away as she chastised him.
He laughed, not seeming at all bothered. “It was an accident, relax. I’ll be sure not to do it again.”
Accident, my ass. You were sucking on there like a pacifier. Then again, I probably should’ve stopped him…
“Fuck you,” she was actually frustrated about this, but the words came out more lighthearted than intended.
“That can be arranged.”
“Bry!” Almost as soon as it came out of her mouth Suki wanted to kick herself for the cringey nickname. Where the hell did it come from?? And why! She was meant to be mad at the guy not giving him cutesy nicknames.
But Bryce didn’t pick it apart, simply winking.
“Think of it as an early Christmas present.” He teased as he moved away from the corner. She huffed again as she watched him leave, flashing a cheeky grin back at her. What a fucking douche.
Maybe I *should’ve* tried propositioning Dr. Tanaka, at least he would be more careful.
She was annoyed at the actual thing, sure. But she was more annoyed that rule number five: no visible marks, had been pretty astoundingly disregarded. It wasn’t the hickey itself, it was the principle. The meaning behind the hickey. And the struggle of having a serious conversation with Bryce Lahela.
She found herself asking why she hadn’t brought the rule up, why she hadn’t called him out for ignoring their very clear rules put into place for exactly this reason. Perhaps she didn’t want to stop blurring the lines, even if they were advancing into dangerous territory. Recently she’d been letting him come to hers more often, the threat of roommates not feeling so worrisome anymore, and the thought of sneaking around was sexy. And the relief, the joy she’d felt when it turned out Bryce didn’t only like her body was far from casual.
She didn’t want to be so careful anymore, and that scared the shit out of her.

Q&A: Tyler Posey Talks New Travis Barker-Featured, John Feldmann-Produced Solo Single “Shut Up”
Tumblr media
Today officially marks the start of a brand new era for actor and musician Tyler Posey. After years spent in various bands, the outgoing singer/songwriter is officially stepping out on his own to showcase his distinct brand of pop-punk-inspired music.
Front and center for the very first time, Posey is treating listeners to his bold new single “Shut Up” featuring alt-indie artist phem and none other than blink-182′s Travis Barker.
Discussing the new John Feldmann-produced track, Posey said, “From start to finish, this song really did feel like something special. I wrote the verses on a trip in an RV with my dogs and my friend and felt like it was progressing so naturally in a perfect way.”
He added, “I took those bones to John Feldmann and phem and when she went into the vocal booth to record her vocals, I was so stoked. I had been wanting her on a track but was too nervous to ask. It was an emotional session and then finally to get Travis to play drums on it is just literally a dream come true. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”
Diving further into the moving new song, the passionate performer spoke with The Noise all about working with an idol like Barker plus what he thinks the future of pop-punk will look like. To see what Posey had to say, be sure to look below. Afterward, make sure to stream “Shut Up” here.

How hard was it to keep it a secret that you made a song with Travis Barker?
TYLER POSEY: Fuck man, I mean, I've got blink-182 tattoos, they've been my favorite band since I was a kid and I've got posters of them on my wall that I'm looking at right now. It's such a big deal for me. But like, I think in some way, it was easier to keep it private because it's one of those things that you want to keep sacred. But at the same time, I’m super fucking stoked to release it. So it's like, it hasn't been that hard to keep it a secret because I'm just relishing in the fact that I got to play with him before anyone else knew. It's just so fuckin’ cool.
How did the collaboration come together? Guessing John Feldmann had something to do with it?
Yeah, exactly. I've always been piquing his interest in getting like my favorite people to collab with us. You know, I'm like, “Hey? What is Mark Hoppus doing today?’ if I’m ever at the studio with him. So this kind of came about like that. I was like, “What’s the possibility of Travis getting on the track?”
And [Jonh's] like, “Maybe the next album” because for some reason he thought sense this album I'm debuting just my name and kind of going solo, he thought [we should] keep the focus on that. But then, he hit me up one day after we recorded “Shut Up” and he FaceTimed me and he was in the studio with Travis. He's like, “Hey, so you want Travis to play on a song?” I was like “What!? Yeah, of course but I thought you said no.” [laughs]
So Travis was like right there and he's like, “What's up, dude?” And I was like, “Hey man! Yeah, so ‘shut up.’ If you dig that track then please I would love for you to feature on it.” And he loved it so that's how it started, kind of unconventional.

Had you met Travis prior to this?
I have, yeah. So Feldy lets me fill in on bass for Goldfinger whenever Mike Herrera can't -- which is like the coolest thing to put on my resume, like I’m the fill-in bassist for Goldfinger. So, [John] has this Christmas party (or he used to before COVID) and he does it at his house and he has this huge fucking Christmas party where Goldfinger and all these other bands usually play and he sets up a stage. And one year, Travis was playing drums [for Goldfinger] and there's this one moment in “Superman” where it's just bass and drums and I like locked eyes with him for as long as I could before he cracked a smile [laughs]. So yeah, we’ve met a couple times before. He was super stoked to be a part of this song and he's just killing it with collabs lately so I was just honored that he wanted to work with me.
Speaking of Travis’ collabs, are you a fan of some of his recent crossover stuff with artists like Machine Gun Kelly and Trippie Redd?
Yeah, absolutely dude. Like, I grew up in the punk scene so, for some reason, when I was a punk kid going to Warped Tour all the time I was really headstrong about maintaining being “punk” and I didn't listen to anything outside of the genre. I was like, “Fuck everything else! I’m punk!” So it kind of took a little while to kind of break that. But that was like years ago so I love what [Travis] is doing with them. I think it's fucking cool too that it's putting -- so like I've been in the punk scene forever and I've always played punk music, no matter what I write, it just comes out punk -- so it's cool that pop-punk is now making a resurgence with Barker and Machine Gun Kelly and Trippie and all these other people. I think it's setting a cool precedence for punk bands that have been really trying to make it for years. So hopefully that happens.
It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for pop-punk music thanks to people like Travis Barker and yourself who have a big platform and use it to help bring pop-punk music to a wider audience.
Yeah, dude. That's kind of how I met and got involved with all these punk bands. I was kind of vocal about them on Twitter like a long time ago, when I used to use Twitter a lot. I would just be listening to punk music and would just post a picture of it 'cause I wanted the kids to know about it so that's kind of how my involvement got started. Like State Champs hit me up and I got in good with them and rode with them on Warped Tour. Then I met Knuckle Puck and Neck Deep and just all these huge punk bands kind of brought me into the world and then it was kind of an easy transition once I started releasing my own shit. So I'm super thankful that they welcomed me with open arms and that I am, you know, part of this like, showing people the way of the punk [laughs].
Tumblr media
So going back to “Shut Up,” how would you say this song differs from your previous projects like PVMNTS and Five North?
I think with every album, every artist says “we try to evolve” and for me it's just always been this progression. It hasn't really been anything that I've been trying to have happen, it’s just sort of happened naturally. So I think anything that I put out will always have that element of it sounding a little bit different, a little more mature [and] grown up. So I really like the song, it's polished. I love that phem is a part of it. I think it adds this kind of dynamic that I used to think my music writing was missing lately. I just think that it's more mature. Like I said, I can't really step out of like pop-punk world 'cause it's in my blood, that’s how I write. So it's not too different, it's just a more sort of mature vibe than I guess I was doing before. But like, with my last band Five North with Feldy, we really tried to experiment and kind of push the envelope a little bit. So we had like weird synth sounds but it all kind of worked because we always kept it like this pop-punk melodic sort of drive with driving verses and vocals. So it's kind of like the same vibe but just, you know, more mature. Long story short [laughs].
youtube
Is it nerve wracking for you to to put your name strictly on things now as a solo artist as opposed to having a band?
No, I don't think so. I think I've always sort of viewed myself as a solo songwriter. It's just, like, growing up in the punk scene, you know, you always had a band name and for the longest time I was part of bands that everybody, sort of, had an opinion and we all would song-write. But for what I've been doing lately, it's just been me so it felt right. It's more of like an experiment at this point. You know, I don't know how it's gonna be received, but it kind of frees me up to be a little bit more creative artistically. Whether it's writing, filming something. I just feel like it's the right move.
This song seems to makes sense as a Tyler Posey solo song considering how personal and open it is. Was it challenging for you to be that candid writing these lyrics?
No, no it wasn't. I've always viewed music as a kind of therapy. You know, it's just sort of been my outlet. As much as fuckin’ everybody says that, it holds true. So I've never really held back when it comes to writing music. Like, I've gone through a bunch of shit. My mom died like six years ago so I've written about that a bunch of times. So I've never really been one to struggle being open when it comes to writing lyrics. But this one, this one definitely is a heavy song. Like I got sober during the pandemic because I was just abusing a little bit too much and going too heavy and couldn't seem to get out of this cycle. So I was sober for a while, but like, I was just kind of dealing with an ex and kind of using that to lean on as sort of a new drug. So it's kind of what the song is about. But yeah, it's just coming together at a really vulnerable time in my life but it’s never really been too hard to be that open. I think that people deserve to know that everyone is going through the same shit that they're going through -- even if it's just one person.
For people who can relate to this song, is there any advice you can offer to them? Maybe how you felt when you were writing it?
Fuck [laughs]. My advice for somebody who's listening to this song – I don’t know dude. Life is fucking weird. Sometimes you try to do the things that you think are going to lead you to the right path but it feels like it's not. So I think that everything happens for a reason, as corny as that it. Like, if there’s some bad shit that happens, the reason is [because] you learn from it. So I think that's kind of the model for this song. Whether it's good or bad, you're gonna learn something from it and you're hopefully going to grow. It's just up to you if you want to grow from it.
Tumblr media
That’s a great way to put it. So lastly, not giving away too much, should fans be expecting more solo music from you moving forward?
Yeah, absolutely! So this is just a sneak peek. I'm going to be releasing two EPs. We were going to do a full album but we just split the album in half and we're gonna do two EPs. The first one is called DRUGS and is all about my experience becoming sober, why I got sober and the shit that happens during that. Then the next EP, they're both going to be 7 tracks, I'm gonna release it later on in the year. So there's gonna be a bunch of shit coming out. This is kind of like the new course of action for releasing music for me, it's all going to be under my name.
That’s exciting! Guess there really isn’t much else to do during a pandemic so it makes sense to write and release a bunch of music.
Yeah dude, exactly. So I'm going to try and get some visual content out too. Start doing some videos, I’ll be filming the music video for “Shut Up” soon. So just going to keep on that course.

the story.
the d’ansembourg twins were a shock to the world, and maybe that’s the way that wren preferred things. from the moment he was born, he wanted to be an outsider. while his sisters were prim, proper and put together, and his brother an overemotional idiot, wren stood as a monument to the weird that most people kept hidden away, locked in a drawer for no one to see.
he might have grown up in the palace, but he would escape as often as he could. wren craved normalcy in his early years, and he managed to achieve that by sneaking out a side door to play football in a side alley with the local kids. his friends that may not have been “approved” by his parents, but they were approved to show him about the world - the real world, not the one of royalty.
wren thought of himself as separate from his siblings, and not just because he was the baby of the family, but because he was just... different. he didn’t care for politics, didn’t care for other royal activities. in his teen years, wren was practically a recluse to his family, hidden away in his dorm room at le rosey or his own private rooms in the grand palace, constantly feeling like the only puzzle piece that didn’t quite fit.
wendy jokes sometimes that he must have been adopted, but wren is sure he wasn’t meant to be born into palaces and riches beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.
while his parents always expected him to grow out of it, he did the opposite. he never stopped caring about the strange things he’d always regarded as more important that schoolwork. following lara to le rosey was one of the first truly “royal” things wren had done in his entire life, and he still managed to be awful at that. he was constantly in disciplinary hearings or getting shouted at by whichever teacher he pissed off with his detached attitude. but it didn’t crush his spirit at all, in fact, it only made him act out more.
maybe it was an attention thing - that would explain the next ten years of his life that he’d spend vying for the favor of strangers over the internet to determine his own self worth, or whatever the therapist said.
perhaps it was the years of his only friends being two kids raised by their laptop screens just outside the palace, or the hundreds of hours of looking at memes instead of actually doing as he was told, but something in wren made him want to do whatever he liked, no matter what others thought of him.
when lara went off to oxford, wren took a gap year. and then another. and then another, and soon it had been five years - his sister had a master’s degree and he had a massive social media fanbase. he’s not sure which of them did better for themselves.
when his father died, wren realized that he was actually going to have to be a prince for the first time in his life. before, he’d let lara take the reins on anything and just showed up to parties in bright colored suits and weird patterned socks and ties that didn’t match. but now that his older brother was king: wren was expected to pull his weight.
he was terrible at it, for starters. he said too much, threw jokes and lies out to the press just to see what they’d print the next day. he became somewhat of a cryptid for gossip columnists and tmz reporters, because if you could manage to catch him, wren would deliver biting remarks and hilarious anecdotes about the royalty around him. he loves to watch reporters scramble to confirm stories in any way they can.
when nathalie died, he came back to luxembourg and found himself a bit aimless. he took up art during this time, making some really dark paintings and a whole lot of collage work, which he then had to convince luca to not hang up around the palace, because luca constantly plays at being everyone’s proud older brother.
but he managed to pull the family back together, and things got easier, gradually. mainly, he helped everyone heal by not changing a thing - he stayed unabashedly strange through the entire ordeal, and in the process became a rock the others could rely on.
maybe he wasn’t a misshapen puzzle piece, but just a weird one that took some time to figure out the location of. he didn’t feel like the outcast anymore, but instead a valued member of the family - and had they always treated him like that? he wasn’t sure - and that was the worst part. how could he stay in their favor if he didn’t know what he did to earn it?
his (not so) “secret  twitter" is well known by most of royal stan twitter, and getting a follow back from him is something that is worn like a badge of honor. he pretty much exists on there to roast his siblings’ outfits and choices, but also to poke fun at all other royals. truly, it’s just one more piece of controlled rebellion. he wouldn’t say things to hurt his family... on purpose, at least.
it became an arnauld d’orleans hate twitter during the occupation. he would come up with very colorful roasts to go along with photos taken of the french king from bad angles. it was resistance, the only way wren d’ansembourg knew how to do it. his plenty of instagram lives and twitch streams helped, too - bringing visibility tothe occupation of luxembourg to places that many people would have turned away from it altogether.
and when the occupation ended, he threw a party in the back alley behind the palace that he grew up in. by the end of the night, it was attended by thousands of luxembourgian citizens. lara frowned upon it, but wendy had the time of her life, so he had enough support to call their “sibling vote” on whether he’d fucked up, a dead tie.
he ran a charity stream that raised over eight million dollars for relief in belgium after the bombings, taking requests for things he could do in his room. he only broke four priceless artifacts during it,.
when he was invited to the protection program, he was the most wary of it. he didn’t need to network, he didn’t need to be protected from anything. wren knew he could care of himself, but a change of scenery seemed... kind of fun. it was getting boring in luxembourg, now that things have settled. and as long as he’s able to be connected to wifi, and he’s allowed to do at least three stupid tings a week, everything ill be alright.
interested? contact me!
i do want to say that i feel like the main thing i am looking for in a wren applicant is that his vibe is.... strange. i imagine wren is a 100 gecs song if it came to life.  he’s an ancient chaos god trapped in the lanky body of a d’ansembourg man.
most things are negotiable, and i’d love to discuss any changes or ideas you have. please contact me ( @lucadansembourg ) if you’re interested in filling this connection !!

Blending left field jazz elements with club tropes to forge something truly new, Emma-Jean Thackray's work is never less than riveting. New album Yellow is out on July 2, with the composer commenting: “It’s a record about togetherness, the oneness of all things in the universe, showing love and kindness, human connection. I approached the record by trying to simulate a life-changing psychedelic experience, an hour where we see behind the curtain to a hidden dimension, where the physical realm melts away and we finally see that we are all one.” Set to be released via her own Movementt imprint, the album is led by gorgeous new single 'Say Something' - opening with glimmers of Rhodes piano, it leans on that hi-hat shuffle before Emma-Jean Thackray uses her voice to elevate the song. A plea towards communication, it's a powerful introduction. [via Clash]

Philadelphia punk rockers Mannequin Pussy have released the title track to Perfect, their upcoming EP due out May 21. The new song comes with a flashy music video that’s inspired by the kitschy glamor of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, too. Musically, 'Perfect' is a distorted blaze of rock guitars that sees vocalist-guitarist Missy eviscerating the idea that people must manicure their own social media presence. “Last year, I found myself spending more time on my phone than I ever had in my life… I realized that through years of social media training, many of us have grown this deep desire to manicure our lives to look as perfect, as aspirational as possible,” explained Missy in a statement. “We want to put ourselves out there, share our lives, our stories, our day to day — and these images and videos all shout the same thing: ‘Please look at me, please tell me I’m so perfect.’ It’s simultaneously a declaration of our confidence but edged with the desperation that seeks validation from others.” In the accompanying music video, directed by Missy, viewers get to watch as a 10-year reunion at Sugarbush High slowly unravels. It opens on three former classmates, all three of whom are pregnant, dishing some hushed gossip and talking about how they want to get plastic surgery that’s so good they mistake one another for strangers. Cue two students-turned-drag queens making a grand entrance and strutting their stuff on the dance floor (mirroring the 1997 comedy classic) while old classmates gasp, shield their eyes, and panic. Meanwhile, Mannequin Pussy can be seen tearing up the band stage while they perform live. [via Consequence]

Following the release of her debut EP I Can’t Cry For You in December, Manchester’s Phoebe Green is back with new bop ‘IDK’. “[It] explores a complete detachment from reality, observing things from a place of total apathy and feeling as though I’m witnessing my life as a bystander with little to no connection to it,” Phoebe explains. “It’s a horrible state to be in, I think it happens when I get overwhelmed.” [via DIY]

Fast-rising French-Korean artist spill tab is unveiling her latest mesmerising single ‘Anybody Else’. Accompanied by a new vid directed by friend and collaborator Jade Sadler, spill tab says, “This song is cheesy as fuck but I love it, it’s pretty straight forward, a little shameless - the lyrics are sort of a way of expressing my love without openly saying I love you. Jade Sadler (the video director) and I just wanted to have a shit ton of fun on this one. We thought about something with narrative or plot and it was just getting to be too corny. I wanted something lighthearted and playful, so we decided we would have all of our homies in this video paired with different colors and angles and set designs. I’m so excited with the way it turned out.” [via DIY]

Willow Kayne has shared her debut single 'Two Seater'. The Gen Z talent links together huge opposing forces, creating her own potent brand of rebel-pop. New single 'Two Seater' finds Willow blazing a trail, upending convention through melding together differing sounds. The lush, 90s inspired soundscape leans on nostalgic impulses, but her punk-like disregard for convention is sheer pop futurism. Produced by DANIO, it finds Willow Kayne coming into her own completely off the bat. [via Clash]

BENEE has shared a video for her single ‘Happen To Me’. It’s the latest cut from her debut album, Hey u x, which arrived last November featuring guest spots from the likes of Grimes, Lily Allen and Flo Milli. “This song is super important to me,” she says. “It’s the opening track [on the album]. It’s the first song where I’ve written about anxiety. The lyrics are pretty dark. Life is pretty crazy right now, and I think it’s important to talk about this kind of stuff.” Of the video, she adds: “Stoked to be sharing this music video with everyone! I filmed it with a bunch of mates, and it was the coolest set! Hope you love it as much as I do.” [via Dork]

Los Angeles-based art-pop artist Kit Major has shared the music video for 'When the Drugs Don't Work,' a more introspective stab at her signature dark, electropop sound. Blending driving dance beats and thumping hyperpop-influenced synths, Kit Major creates an intoxicating elixir of soundbites and grit. Taking inspiration from Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, and Charlotte Lawrence, 'When the Drugs Don't Work' dives into the overwhelming vulnerability and panic of failing to curb a depressive episode with medication. With this release, Kit Major furthers her efforts to be open and make light of her mental health struggles. On the video, Kit Major shares, "'When The Drugs Don't Work' was filmed in one weekend, directed by my best friend in my departed grandparents' now empty house. We filmed this in quarantine without a crew and worked to create a dark & twisted fairytale together. When I first started thinking about the video, I knew I wanted a more lighthearted take to balance the darker theme of my mental health in the song. I wrote the lyric, “little princess hurt locked away inside her palace,” because sometimes when I'm isolated in my room I visualize myself as a Disney princess running inside her castle, instead of being in my bed, surrounded by empty water bottles. This song was written from a mix of different perspectives including my own, my persona, and outside voices. I think we accomplished the storytelling behind WTDDW by portraying the importance of imagination and trusting yourself."  Alongside, director Noël Dombroski adds, "WDDW is a raw, introspective song from Kit that shines a light on parts of herself that at times may be hard to face. We were lucky enough to be able to shoot at Kit's late grandparents' house, an emotionally significant location that acts in the video as the inside of Kit's head. We wanted to challenge viewers to look at every facet of themselves and realize that each part is valuable, even if you may not like it. A conversation we had a lot was about the color scene, where the image of Kit is being pulled apart by color channels. You may hate one of those colors, but you still need it to create that full image. The same can sometimes be said about depression - it may be a layer of yourself that you don't care for, but without that experience, I don't know that WDDW could exist." The music video dives into the psychological turmoil at the heart of the track with a hyperstylized touch. Spotlights wander through a funhouse version of Kit's childhood home, hunting down our protagonist, who we find trapped behind bars, downing teardrops from teacups and champagne from the bottle. Simultaneously unnerving and stimulating in a Paranormal Activity-meets Alice in Wonderland aestheticism, the music video for 'When the Drugs Don't Work' dives into the floating images of a mental breakdown with a fever dream lucidity.

Number One Popstar continues to prove herself as a powerhouse, shaking up the music world with her fresh, unapologetic beats. This week, she shares another one, her new single 'Forever 21.' And no, it’s not about clothes. 'Forever 21' begins with a kicking beat, but subdued with reflective, twinkly keys. It’s a perfect mix of existential dread and dance. Carrying this vibe throughout, it breaks in between with a beaming guitar-driven bridge. Lyrically, the track makes us question why brands and media make it seem like our twenties are our prime, when we still have our whole lives ahead of us? Despite the effervescent pop sound, Hollowell got vulnerable about her past and its effect on the song, saying, "I initially started writing 'Forever 21' when I found myself looking back on my early 20’s, wanting to recapture the hopeful and dumb feelings of my youth. But the longer I spent on the song, the more it became a reflection of the loss I faced when my parents passed away in my early 20s. I started looking at my own fear of death, of dying like them. I really didn’t know where my life was headed back then. […] I eventually turned that painful experience into a motivation to go after everything I wanted in life. To be seriously less serious, recognizing everything is fleeting.” Like her other music videos, Hollowell likes to flip popular culture and societal expetations on their head. While also bringing the fear of aging to life, she also reminds audiences to stay present instead of holding on to youth. [via Earmilk]

Following in the footsteps of Prince and Lizzo, Dizzy Fae is set to become the Twin Cities’ next pop sensation. She just dropped her brand new track, 'BODY MOVE', and much like the name suggests, it will make you want to move. Self-described as alternative R&B, Fae takes a few notes from contemporary hyperpop artists like Charli XCX and Doja Cat with an industrial iciness that plays off the technicolor pop melodies. It’s an influence you can hear on 'BODY MOVE', produced by New York’s Stelios (Young Thug, SZA). The track builds itself off a snappy, rubber band bass line indebted to pop’s recent disco revival. “It’d be so cruel if I didn’t let my body move,” Fea’s voice loops through a robotic filter. A buzzing drum machines barrels in at the chorus, transforming the lightly retro groove to a futuristic club track more akin to the production styles of 100 gecs. But for all the modern influences, the Ying Yang Twins reference shows she’s a student of all types of music. [via Consequence]

Technically, 'Your Power' is not the lead single from Billie Eilish’s newly announced album Happier Than Ever. The album includes two songs she released last year: the jazzy, well received ballad 'my future' and the contemptuous multi-format radio hit 'Therefore I Am.' However, 'Your Power' is the first song Eilish has released since announcing the new album, debuting her new look, and officially commencing her LP2 era, so there’s definitely a deep sense of anticipations around the song. Eilish teased 'Your Power' this week with a brief sound snippet featuring acoustic guitar and the words “Try not to use your power” sung to a Feist-y melody. Now the full song and its Eilish-directed music video have arrived. The completed record remains as soft, pretty, and devastatingly sad as the preview audio. In the clip, a slow pan across a mountainside in the Simi Valley reveals Eilish in the clutches of a gigantic snake. (A press release specifies that it’s an 80-pound anaconda.) [via Stereogum]

Worlds Away
Requested by @spaghetittiesbcimgay : hey! could i get something with our boy peter with a really smart reader?? who’s an intern at nasa or smth? and is obsessed with her instruments (guitar, bass, etc) and also space? (can you tell i’m projecting?) idk if this would be wayy to specific (if it is, totally leave out the last bit!! :) ) and i have no idea where to go from there but ive been dying for some peter x smart!reader sooo.. thank u so much in advance xx
Summary: You and Peter Parker are two of the smartest kids at Midtown High. So why are you both completely clueless at the fact you both have massive crushes on each other?
Words: 1391
✎_____________________________________________________________________
Obviously Midtown was full of students with extraordinary smarts and subsequent extraordinary internships because of it. Naturally, Peter had gotten a lot of attention when word spread that he’d swung (no pun intended) an internship with Tony STARK. The superhero hype around the school was real even months later. And after news broke about aliens visiting earth and all that a couple years ago, every hyper intelligent teenager’s hopes were directed on working with space tech: protection or exploration, it didn’t matter. But that was mainly Tony’s domain now and the world knew it, so Midtown’s students scrambled to find prestigious positions in other areas.
When you got accepted to intern as a research assistant for NASA, you immediately shared the news with a few close friends. And they were, of course, absolutely stoked for you. They were also huge blabbermouths so by the time everyone returned to school that Monday, the entire grade knew. Jealousy emitted from them like the energy of an exploding star. But unlike a star, the only visible evidence were the side-eye glares and slight shaking of the heads in disbelief. If you could read minds, they would be a mix of chatter saying: ‘why does SHE get to work for NASA?’ ‘I’m twice as smart as her—that should be my job’ ‘I bet she paid her way in—they’re not even accepting interns in the middle of the school year’ ‘she’s two years younger than me! I need that internship more than she does!’ Etcetera.
But not everyone was so green. Peter Parker, for example, was over the moon (still no pun intended) when you told him. He was also your number one suspect for blabbing. At least with him and his big mouth, you knew it was from a place of pride rather than an attempt to spread gossip. As if anyone went to Peter Parker for gossip. Maybe that was part of the reason you found him so appealing.
“If they send you to space will you let me know?” He said earnestly. You just laughed.
“I’m doing research, not training to be an astronaut. I don’t have the physical endurance!”
“But you’re smart enough to engineer a spaceship.”
You rolled your eyes. “Not on my own.”
“Still!”
“They’re not sending me to space and I’m not engineering a spaceship for other people to go to space,” you laughed.
“Well what are they not paying you for then?” he pressed.
“I’m joining the student research team that assesses alien remnants from the battle of New York to help find ways to improve our own space technology. NASA’s actually working closely with Mr. Stark on a lot of it--I’m sure he’d tell you more...”
You stopped talking at the awestruck expression on Peter’s face. He leaned forward.
“No way,” he gushed. “Mr. Stark didn’t tell me any of that. Wow, you sounded really smart just then.” He paused, thinking. “This is gonna be awesome for you, y/n!” he beamed, sounding just as enthused as you felt.
“I know!”
“When do you start?”
“Not for a few weeks.”
“Good,” Peter said.
You raised an eyebrow.
“I mean, I--I’m going to miss being able to hang out with you and stuff when you’re off doing space stuff.”
“Well, I won’t actually be in space at any point, so we should be good,” you smiled.
“Well, you’re definitely smart enough to go to space, so when you do eventually end up on a spaceship--” Peter held up a finger to cut off your objections before you could open your mouth. “--You could entertain your fellow astronauts with some tunes.” Peter mimed an air guitar.
“Shut up,” you laughed, swatting at his arm. “I think a theremin would be a better soundtrack for outer space anyway. Acoustic guitars have college-student-on-the-quad vibes.”
“Not when you play.”
“Okay Peter,” you rolled your eyes, flattered but embarrassed by his persistence. “I’ll show up on the first day of my internship with a guitar slung on my back and ask if they’d prefer the sounds of Brian May or John Mayer.”
“Perfect,” Peter said without a hint of sarcasm behind his smile. You blushed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After school that day, Peter came by your house as usual so you could work on homework together. You asked him once why he preferred to work at your place—not that you minded whatsoever, but you became curious after picking up on the pattern—and he said because your place was more “stimulating” than his. Stimulating! You had laughed so hard that his confusion had circled around until he worried he’d said something offensive.
“Stimulating? Really?” you had said after composing yourself.
“Well, yeah,” he’d replied. “You have all these cool instruments and your whole room looks like space.”
As you both entered it now, you bypassed the light switch and plugged in the strand of white Christmas lights that encircled the ceiling. Instantly the room was bathed in a soothing glow. You weren’t allowed to paint your walls black ("But it would look so much more like space, mom!”) so you’d ordered four giant tapestries with different galaxies on them and hung one on each wall. A sun-shaped lamp rested on your nightstand. It was one of those sunrise lamps that woke you up by gradually getting brighter in the morning to mimic the elusive wintertime sunrise. Your precious string instruments—an acoustic guitar (Gary) and electric bass (Lily)—stood opposite your bed. You couldn’t think of a better definition of a safe space.
And now school felt like worlds away. Minus the fact Peter was here with you  to do homework.
Peter assumed his usual position in the bean bag chair furthest from the door. You collapsed into yours, closest to your instruments. A long ottoman served as a makeshift desk for you both to dump your school materials.
But today you both melted into the cushions without moving to open your backpacks, abandoned at your sides.
Peter--usually a ball of energy that would lead you to believe he was a puppy in a former life--closed his eyes and laid his head back. It had been an especially long week.
Without giving it a second thought, you leaned sideways and removed Gary from its stand. Humming a little, your fingers grazed the guitar strings until the notes strung into the beginning of one of your favorite songs.
After you finished you looked up and spotted Peter watching you. Of course you’d known he was there, but you’d half expected him to drift off before the first chorus. Your face burned.
His forehead creased. “Was that ‘Here Comes The Sun’?”
You lit up. “Yeah! You listen to The Beatles?”
Peter nodded, feeling confident. “John Legend is the best.”
You stifled a giggle. “Yep,” you said. You had an unreasonably strong urge to hug him.
You hesitated, not sure if you wanted to stop playing or continue.
“Can I hear another?” Peter said after a moment, making the decision for you.
“Sure,” you said, suddenly feeling shy. “What do you want to hear?”
“Anything.”
“Okay,” you steadied your breathing. Deciding to stick with the space theme, you strummed the beginning chords to Muse’s ‘Starlight’ and sang along quietly, losing yourself to your music and completely missing the infatuated grin that found its way onto Peter’s face as he got lost in thought:
Not only was he hanging out in the coolest bedroom he’d ever seen, he got to spend it with the coolest and smartest person he knew. He wanted to spend as many hours with you as he could, even though you would probably have a lot less free time once you started the internship. But until then, he would enjoy every moment he could. Like this one.
And who knows, maybe one day space travel would be a regular thing and then you could both hang out on the moon together for real and get away from it all. Peter could listen to you play guitar and sing random songs all day. He might even tell you how he really felt about you once he built up enough courage.
But Peter realized those possibilities were still worlds away. And right now, his world was sitting across from him, humming like a windchime that told him he was home.

HEWWO I HAVE QUESTIONS.... flint: 1, 5, 19, 22, 25, 30, 33, 36, 41, 49, 51 / cadma: 3 8, 15, 21, 52, 57, 59 / feng huo: 9, 17, 30, 31, 67
KISSES U.... thank u for asking about my chilbren... answers under cut bc long :’D
Flint
I’m gonna answer theirs according the alternate story thing I have for them instead of their actual game self because those are. Two very different people lol :’D This is probably what you wanted anyway?! uwu
1. why did they choose their class(es)? their subclass(es)? Becoming a warlock was never in their intentions, it was done more so because both parties would benefit from the relationship. Flint’s patron needs to earn some favor with a higher power to accomplish their own goals and Flint needed to get rid of some undead, so a celestial patronage was a pretty painless deal. They need each other a little more than they might realize though :^)
5. do they follow a higher power? what are their thoughts on divinity? They don’t follow a higher power, necessarily. Because of their patron they do have to keep in mind that their power comes from being in someone’s good books, and they act accordingly to stay there. Otherwise they believe in the power of gods and all, but their relationship with divinity is generally pretty lax. They’re the kind of person who only prays when they need it, if that makes sense?
19. what haunts them? what doesn’t? All the mistakes from Flint’s not-so-distant past bite at their heels every now and then. What doesn’t haunt them so much is probably the fact they rob tombs lmao... As far as Flint is concerned, an angry spirit or two can’t touch them the same way a grudge from the corporeal can.
22. what is a promise they’ve broken? There’s a lot... but probably the one that ruins them the most is a promise they made to themselves not to hurt people.
25. what stories do they like to tell? what stories do they like to hear? Flint is an expert at spooky campfire ghost stories, mostly because they draw from their own experiences. As for what they like to hear... They like very classic “hero gets the girl” kinds of tales! Stuff you don’t have to take too seriously, and are just stories to be stories.
30. what do they seek out from others? Someone to watch their back while they pilfer jewels and to stoke the campfire when it’s their turn to keep watch at night. In a word, reliability!
33. what makes them cry? So many things... Flint acts tough but they’re a baby... To rattle off a few things, they get weepy whenever someone cares too much about them, whenever someone has to say goodbye (no matter how temporary), and whenever they hear something sappy and romantic. It is almost too easy to pull at their heartstrings.
36. what’s a secret they’ve kept? Probably the biggest secret they keep is what they were like in the past. They spent a lot of years doing some pretty... morally and ethically questionable things...
41. what are they attracted to in other people? It’s weird... but probably loneliness? Not in a sad way or anything (exclusively). Flint has ended up surrounded by people who know too much, so much so that it makes them unquestionably different from others. That kind of thing breeds loneliness and Flint likes filling voids. Being needed? That’s sexy.
49. what makes them smile? They will visibly light up when they get close to a certain town. Where a certain person lives. :^) But also they’ll smile in almost any relaxed situation, like while they’re playing music, listening in on casual conversations, or just drinking in nature.
51. what is the most beautiful thing in the world, for them? A tomb full of riches... polished gold... ah, it almost brings a tear to their eye...
Cadma
3. what is their goal right now? He’s kind of drifting through life, just with a lot of enthusiasm, so I don’t think he really has grand ambitions or anything. I suppose you could say his goal right now is supposed to be thwarting a lich queen’s evil plans for world domination, but honestly he’s just here to vibe.
8. what are three songs that suit them? Wait I don’t know anything about music- UH Soldier, Poet, King by The Oh Hellos, Here’s a Health to the Company by The Longest Johns, and Halcyon by The Paper Kites kind of fit Cadma’s vibes. Despite his personality he’s pretty mellow on the inside!
15. do they trust their party? why or why not? Cadma trusts his party more than anything, because he’s stuck by them for longer than anyone else. He used to be (and probably still is let’s be real) very flaky- the second something looks more interesting, or things start looking dangerous he’s GONE. So hanging out with the same crew for years, through thick and thin, has gotta mean SOMETHING at this point, right??
21. do they follow their head, their heart, or their body? Definitely his heart, maybe a little his body. Cadma just has no braincells.
52. from whom do they seek validation? People with more brains than him lol... His old captain (even though that ship has kind of sailed), his current party members, pretty much anyone who is perceivably smarter than he is is someone he wants to keep around and impress.
57. what makes them angry? Not a whole lot, but anyone who uses their faith as justification for keeping the status quo gets put immediately on a hit list. That, and anyone who disrespects a ship 😤
59. what is a quiet passion of theirs? Nothing about Cadma is very quiet, but recently he’s taken up whittling because he needed something to do while everyone else in the party figured out puzzles :’) He’s not good at it.
Feng Huo
9. do they care about their appearance? how much effort do they put into presentation? Not a whole lot! Feng Huo was kind of cast out of his village with nothing but the clothes on his back, so he does try to keep what he’s wearing tidy since he can’t exactly afford rips and tears. As well as that, he maintains normal upkeep on all his feathers and plumage just to keep healthy!
17. what do they dream about, when their dreams are their own? They dream about going home one day, seeing all the family and friends they were forced to leave behind. He’s a little afraid of how much might’ve changed in his absence, but his heart really aches for his village. He’s super homesick :’(
30.  what do they seek out from others? Nothing! Feng Huo is the kind of person who gives without asking anything in return. I guess what he wants the most is someone who will just be nice to him, or won’t treat him differently? He gets a lot of looks because he’s a phoenix, so being near people who don’t think he’s weird would be very nice!
31. they’re given a blank piece of paper–what do they do with it? At first he wants to write a letter home, but then he decides against it when he realizes no one will know where to deliver it so he just makes a paper crane instead. Not in a sad way though!! It’s more like... an “oh well! plan b!” kind of way :’D
67. what makes them laugh? Literally anything... Corny jokes and terrible puns especially!
THANK U FOR THE ASK THIS WAS FUN!!! ilu ♥

you guys wanna hear about the first time i heard danger days while tripping balls? of course you do
so it was my first solo trip, and it was also the first time i got to listen to music while on acid - the latter was dependent on the former, because until this experiment i’d only ever dropped acid in groups with my stupid friends + my ex-boyfriend and none of them wanted to play music because we were “””at one with nature””” or whatever (also because my ex had this weird hang-up about playing music during group trips lmao what a square) anyway i was pretty stoked to finally experiment with different albums While On Drugs because who doesn’t want to fuckin jam while peaking right? so i took my tab and took a hike through the back hills of my old neighborhood out to a really cool spot on top of the highest foothill overlooking the highway that leads out to san clemente where i knew no one would casually stumble upon a young person Out Of Their Gourd, sat on a nice bench, and queued up the jams
the reason i picked danger days to be the Inaugural Jam was because a) i wanted something i could dance to, b) my ex and i had a theory that danger days may have been the product of psychedelic drugs, and c) i had never really connected to danger days as much as the other albums and i thought that listening to it while Altered might give me a fresh perspective on it. i had always been super into the concept behind it, killjoys and better living and the apocalyptic desert vibe, but the album itself was just kinda...meh. it was the only New Album Experience i had with mcr; i got into them in 2008, and after spending two years listening to virtually nothing other than bullets/revenge/BP on a loop, danger days was too much of a departure for me to really get into it. i was fifteen and prided myself on my Alternativeness. the near-pop of danger days, especially compared to the earlier stuff upon which i had staked my adolescent identity, felt like an affront to my ouch-the-edge tendencies. (ah, teens.) but now, i was twenty-two going on twenty-three, i had gained a Real Personality independent of the kind of music i listened to, and i was ready to give it a chemically-altered shot.
my dudes. it was as though gerard way themself descended upon my hike and gently cleaved my cranium in two to pour Distilled Sonic Excellence directly onto my neural pathways. i never vibed so hard in my whole life. and like yes, i danced and jumped around like a lunatic and sang at the top of my lungs but that wasn’t the biggest deal, i do that sober - it felt like something Clicked in a way it hadn’t before. the musical journey of the album, the sonic narrative of it, and the individual stories of each song all of a sudden made sense. i could follow along, and even though by then the album had been out for years and i thought i knew it well, i made discoveries and connections about it that i doubt i would have made otherwise. i got to have this INSANELY cinematic moment too, where i literally felt like The Protagonist Of Some Indie Film, watching the sun set while kids from yesterday played. like that sounds like i fuckin made it up but it really happened and i didn’t even plan it!!! when i tell you i CRIED, y’all, it was an intense moment
i did have to hike back down in the dark while coming down, but i didn’t fuckin care. i almost didn’t even notice. i tried journaling about the whole experience after the fact but i read it later and i literally just wrote down the song titles and like. underscored them a million times and made such enthusiastic exclamation points that i ripped holes in the paper lmao
my biggest takeaways from the experience were thus: one, danger days fuckin RIPS dude (except sing but we knew that already). two, you should give albums you didn’t love the first time you listened to them another chance later on (if you can, do it while tripping balls) because you could discover something about them you wouldn’t have been able to the first time. and three, danger days: the true lives of the fabulous killjoys was 100% the product of gerard way’s experiments with psychedelic drugs, and you cannot convince me otherwise
OH ALSO! that spot that i mentioned, the one in my old neighborhood? that neighborhood is where mikey lives. so mikey if you see this you should absolutely take kristin and drop acid with her at that bench dude. it’s not even a difficult hike. you could make a date night out of it. if the spirit really moved you it could also be a danger days listening party but since you made it idk that it would hold the same kind of magic for you as it did for me but that’s between you and the tabs homie

I recently made a list of all the musicals I’m pretty familiar with and it came out to 63. and since my sisters won’t listen to my recommendations this is a masterpost of all those musicals with a few of my Thoughts and Opinions. this gets hella long so prepare yourself
-Les Miserables
ah, you never forget your first. I heard the symphonic recording when I was six? seven? so it has become the definitive version in my mind, but cast members (michael ball) are weak, and unfortch I haven’t come across a recording were all the cast members are top notch, though the 25th anniversary concert comes very close (norm lewis!! lea salonga!!)
-The Little Mermaid
ok so on the whole this show is not particularly great or interesting and honestly didn’t do very well on stage BUT hearing sherie rene scott sing poor unfortunate souls literally changed my life and is what really sparked my interest in musical theatre. also norm lewis is there
-The Band’s Visit
unlike any broadway musical you’ve heard fs. based on the movie of the same name, it’s about the egyptian police band being stranded in a middle-of-nowhere town in israel for in 1996. it’s a simple story but incredibly charming and ernest and surprsingly emotional. also the music is played onstage by the actors which is always cool!
-In the Heights
lin manuel miranda’s first musical and is honestly just as good as hamilton, if not better (I said what I said). it’s a slice of life kinda story about people living in washington heights. great music, great story, great characters, feels very real without being like....depressing.
-Aladdin
most of the songs from the movie stay mostly the same, I think they only changed arabian nights, and friend like me (which for the latter was a huuge improvement. I can’t NOT dance whenever I hear it. james monroe inglehart is a fantastic genie). and the flying carpet!! looks amazing!!
-Once on This Island
this story made me v mad initially (the female lead just. dies at the end), but I kept coming back to it because I loved the music, and it took me a while to figure out why and it’s because the caribbean island vibes are off the charts, and that reminds me of my childhood in sofl. and the vocals of the ensemble are amazing and the 2018 revival used a in the round stage with actual sand and live animals how cool is that
-She Loves Me
a super cute, super enjoyable, super fun musical based on the old film shop around the corner. zachery levi and laura benanti make some quality faces
-Next to Normal
oooof. a very intense show both in terms of theme and music. deals with bipolar depression, schizophrenia, drugs, suicide, hallucinations, death of a child....yeah. a very good show that handles all those heavy themes realistically
-Hamilton
so yeah when it first came out five years ago it was very hyped up and was called lin manuel’s “masterpiece” and when I listened to it I was like....dam they’re right. the lyrics and wording are so precise and having a story told by the protag’s enemy is so narratively juicey. plus the music is incredible (also listen to the hamilton mixtape if you haven’t it’s great)
-The Lion King
if you’ve followed me for any time you know I love the movie and the musical only makes it better. the songs, the music, the puppets, heather headley, the songs in zulu, the costumes...ugh perfection. the most successful disney show on broadway
-Aida
ever wonder what it’s like to be so darn good at singing that sir elton john writes a musical for you? well that’s what happened to heather headley and she completely deserved it. it’s a bit problematic in that the egyptian conquerors are all white and all the nubia slaves are black and like....they’re both in africa dude
-Anastasia
ok so I know it didn’t happen but the premise is so compelling and so gd tragic and christy altomare’s voice has such a fragility to it which is such a contrast to who anastasia actually was and the show features a song about russian refugees having to flee their homeland and it’s like the saddest song I’ve ever heard
-Anything Goes
honestly this musical on the whole isn’t that great for some...reasons, but it does have some great Friendship songs and Great tap dancing and sutton foster is in it and she is the epitome of a triple threat
-Cinderella
honestly just watch the brandy version because it’s the best version. better than the broadway version for sure, even though laura osnes is fantastic in everything she does and the show does have an amazing onstage costume change, but the brandy version has the coolest cast and costume and sets
-Ragtime
ho boy. so much to unpack here. while I think this is a “good” musical, it is too long, has too many characters and storylines, and deals with some heavy themes but doesn’t handle them very well so by the end it’s just exhausting and disappointing. BUT it does have the incomparable brian stokes mitchell and audra mcdonald, who is literally the best performer to ever grace broadway
-Thoroughly Modern Millie
there is so much spirit in this show it’s infectious. also sutton foster
-Dear Evan Hanson
sigh. so this musical gained a lot popularity among the Young People and...it..didn’t...deserve it? like again it deals with heavy issues like social anxiety, depression, and suicide, but like ragtime it doesn’t handle them very well; not in an honest way. and like everything they talk about is handled better in next to normal so
-Tuck Everlasting
based on the book, not the movie. the music is something really different and I don’t think broadway was ready to accept it so it didn’t run very long. and the adaption isn’t very strong, but the lead (sarah charles lewis) is very good and it does have a very sad song about miles losing his family
-Come From Away
so this is about the 38 planes that were diverted to a small town in newfoundland on 9/11. now with as much as america loves to talk about 9/11 I had never heard this story so it was cool to hear a different side of it. also it has a song that makes me tear up every time I hear it
-Annie
not much to say about this one. a classic
-Oklahoma!
speaking of classics, if you think this musical is boring and outdated, please listen to the 2019 revival. it rocks in every sense of the word
-West Side Story
this one is also a classic, and often called a masterpiece for good reason. the music is so strong and is integrated so well and it represents the characters on both sides. this video explains it really well. tho productions consistently have trouble finding puerto rican actors to play the puerto ricans....
-Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
this one deserved sooo much more than it got, coming out in the same year as dear shmevan shmhanson. the lighting and set design is incredible and the music reflects each character’s emotion so it feels really honest, and almost like a supporting character. it’s so good guys. it has josh groban in a fat suit
-The Phantom of the Opera
unpopular opinion (maybe): I think gerard butler was a really good phantom. probably andrew llyod webber’s best work
-Waitress
based on the film of the same name, also the first broadway show with an entirely female creative team. also what baking can do came after my entire life
-Hello Dolly!
I fell in love with the movie version with barbra streisand, but then I learned that the original broadway production had a all black cast which is awesome but wasn’t reflected at all in the movie and that’s disappointing. great show tho
-Wicked
I can distinctly remember the first time I heard the ending crescendo of defying gravity. and the fact that it has so quickly become classic staple of broadway is a testiment to how strong it is
-You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown
yes there is a broadway show of charlie brown. the songs are funny and childlike and honest, and very ernest. also kristin chenoweth is hilarious as sally brown (she won a tony for it!)
-Chess
I love the music in the show, and some songs have very complex lyrics but the main character is kinda annoying. like yeah dude deserting your country with another woman and leaving your wife and kids behind is gonna have negative consequences. don’t know what to tell you
-Finding Neverland
not as good as the movie it’s based on. while some of the music is very pretty, the songs are pretty simple and kinda boring
-Venice
ok this show also isn’t very good, the character’s motivations are not clear, especially the villain, and the female lead’s songs are weak. but the premise and some of the songs are arresting, and I kept coming back to them
-The King and I
like wws, it took a very long time for a production to cast this show accurately, and it still hasn’t....quite done it. but the songs are very beautiful. r&h strike again.
-Matilda
features a bunch of v talented children and manages to be lighthearted but also really gets you. just listen to when I grow up
-Little Women
on the whole, not a great adaption. some good songs. sutton foster is great
-Bonnie and Clyde
oh boy you want some bad guy songs? how bout a whole musical of them? oh no the public hated us and we closed after 36 performances. ah well. at least laura osnes got her first tony nod
-Beetlejuice
very catchy show with a killer aesthetic. give alex brightman a tony just for being Like That
-Hadestown
this show has such nice lyrical rhythm, even in the spoken words, and it is so smartly composed and balanced. and even tho the broadway cast recording is out, it’s worth it to listen to the earlier album as well
-Catch Me If You Can
based on the film. just two hours of aaron tveit being a little brat and norbert leo butz flexing on everyone else’s vocal chords
-Miss Saigon
an extremely problematic and infuriating show that is unfortunately very beautiful. introduced lea salonga to the world, so that’s good at least
-The Hunchback of Notre Dame
speaking of problematic but beautiful shows. exceeds the movie in my opinion. the choral vocals just cut right through you
-The Fiddler on the Roof
I listened to the 2016 revival after not listening to this show for years and you know what? it’s really good! like heck!
-Mean Girls
yes they made a musical of mean girls. yes it’s pretty great. regina has a killer song near the end that I love to belt out
-Bandstand
one of the only musicals to make me cry actual tears just from listening to one (1) song. it’s about WWII veterans coming together to form a band just months after the war ends. also laura osnes fricking kills it in the last number
-Into the Woods
I’m not a huge fan of “fairy tales but make it realistic and therefore disappointing” but stephen sondheim is a very good writer and musician so it’s worth checking out. and the witch is played by bernadette peters in the musical and meryl streep in the movie so it’s a win both ways
-How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
what it says on the can. a very fun, ‘don’t take this too seriously’ show. the lead was played by daniel radcliffe and nick jonas at one point so like. come on
-The Last Five Years
honestly this is a very depressing show, but it’s told in a interesting way. it’s about a couple who meet, fall in love, get married, drift apart, and ultimately get divorced, but not in that order
-Newsies
ok so the broadway version is very different from the movie, but it’s still worth checking out! the new verse at the beginning of seize the day makes it worth it!
-Legally Blonde
yes they made a musical of legally blonde. yes it’s great
-Daddy Long Legs
a little known musical about a young woman who is aging out of an orphanage and finds out she is being sent to school by a mysterious benefactor. meghan mcginnis has super sweet voice
-My Fair Lady
another problematic show about a british asshole who takes it upon himself to turn a flower girl into a “proper lady” (no one asked you to do that dude). but it is funny
-South Pacific
ok so I’m not actually super familiar with this show but it does have a very important song called you’ve got to be carefully taught about how racism is not “something you’re just born” so stop making excuses nellie
-Once
again I’m not super knowledgeable about this show, I’ve listened to it a few times, and read the wiki summary but I still don’t quite know what it’s about. but the music is really good, really different from a traditional broadway show. very enticing and sentimental
-Beauty and the Beast
I think this was the first disney movie that made it to broadway? I could be wrong. like hunchback, I think it exceeds the movie, esp if I can’t love her??? shoutout to my sister’s friend for blowing my socks off with that song in 2005
-Six
not a full blown production, just a rock show about the six wives of henry viii. I thought it would be like riding off the hamilton craze of “history but make it cool” but it actually kicks ass all by itself
-The Sound of Music
another classic, and edelweiss makes me emotional
-Billy Elliot
ahh this show has so much tangible emotion in it and it’s heavy but children are it and they carry it so well and the juxtaposition of the protests an d the dancing UGH
-The Lightning Thief
yes the percy jackson musical! is good and enjoyable! doesn’t take itself seriously at all (as it shouldn’t) and the last two songs go so hard!
-The Music Man
this is imprinted into my brain because of my sister’s drama group and from that day on I have never known peace
-The Scarlet Pimpernel
based on the film of the same name, it’s really good, the opening number goes really hard, and it SHOULD be revived with laura osnes
-Oliver!
this show is....good..but it’s just too long. too many extra songs that don’t do anything
-Sussical
beautifully whimsical and heartfelt. features an array of suess characters and stories
-Moulin Rouge!
the cast album that came late year and it kicks ass. it keeps some of the songs that were featured in the movie, and brings in songs that have come out since the movie like shut up and dance, royals, and bad romance
-The Greatest Showman
so technically this isn’t a broadway show, but it’s going to be, and I think it will be much better as a stage show than a movie.
