So I had a new idea for one of those too-ambitious-to-ever-actually-write fics.

I had the thought today that Simon is the only really good father figure in the entire series. Even Jake, who tries his best, kind of sucks at being a dad, and it's only because the pups are so self-sufficient that they all turn out okay. Likewise, the writing is, imo, too forgiving to Joshua for some of the tough love crap he pulled on Finn. Obviously he's nowhere near as bad a father as Martin or Hunson, but the bar is so low it's on the ground.

So it's a shame Simon, who obviously very much wants to be a dad, and who has proven to be pretty good at it even if he's made his own share of mistakes, only returns to sanity when Finn is practically an adult. They're good friends, but the window was basically already closed on him being any kind of significant parental influence in Finn's life.

Then I thought, wait. There's no rules in fanfic. I can imagine whatever what-if scenario I want!!!!!

AU where Simon is Finn's adopted dad:

In this AU, Simon is cured (or perhaps only partially cured?) not long before Finn arrives in Ooo. The HOW may or may not be relevant to the story, but he's back to himself or at least as sane as he was when he was traveling with little Marcy.

When Margaret and Joshua find baby Finn, they do a bit of investigating and find out that there's another human who lives nearby, and they go to confront him in case he was the one who abandoned the baby. Simon is of course stricken at the accusation, but the misunderstanding is cleared up and, of course, eventually it's decided that he'll take care of Finn. (I picture the dogs being reluctant to part with him at first, but then Simon overhears that they're demon hunters and is like OH ACTUALLY I'D BE GLAD TO TAKE HIM IN, IN FACT I INSIST! I HAVE A LOVELY--and safe!--HOME HAHA... MAYBE YOU AND THE TWINS CAN VISIT HIM SOMETIMES THOUGH. WON'T THAT BE NICE)

Anyway I don't know exactly where it'd go from there but there's so much you could do with this AU

Obviously Finn and Jake are still best friends even though they're not actual brothers, because they're, like, literally canonically soulmates. And being around the dog family would be more than enough for Finn to pick up his same old reckless adventurer tendencies as before, despite Simon's best efforts to keep him out of trouble. This would be one of the biggest sources of conflict between them.

Marceline would of course be Finn's cool older sister figure. Getting Simon back early would have some serious effects on Marcy's character development, though exactly how that would play out would probably depend on the circumstances of his cure (and also how involved Bonnie is in the whole situation).

(I have a scene in my head where a really young Finn asks Simon why Marcy calls him by name instead of "Dad", and Simon needs to take a Moment to process the ensuing emotions.)

Maybe the fic could explore right after Finn is adopted, when Simon and the dogs are still trying to figure out where he came from. (They all become friends in the process, which facilitates more playdates for their kids later on.) Considering Finn appeared to be abandoned, the dogs would be fairly happy to move on and let his presumably awful birth parents just get bent and rot. Simon, although surprised other humans still exist somewhere, can't deny he feels similarly. But, the bear hat sparks something in Simon's memory, and when he brings it up to Marceline she remembers the ship she'd saved all those years ago. They make the connection and realize humans must have settled somewhere across the sea. Depending on what kind of fic you want it to be, they may or may not act on this epiphany right away.

Even if they save the islands for later, I think Simon--an anthropologist at heart--would recognize the importance of keeping something as culturally important as Finn's hat, if only to remind him of his heritage later. But even if he stored it somewhere, little toddler Finn would repeatedly dig it out of the closet and insist on wearing it, until Simon acquiesced that it was just going to be Finn's thing. Like Hambo and a security blanket all wrapped in one. With another human around to model himself on, though, I think Finn would eventually stop wearing it as an actual hat all the time and instead maybe just drape it over his shoulders like a hood or capelet.

I imagine Simon would insist on some sort of homeschooling for Finn, at least part of the time, because I just can't picture Candy Kingdom schools being up to his standards, let alone anywhere else in Ooo, lmao. Plus this way he'd be able to teach Finn about human history and culture without worrying about the truth getting mixed up or lost to time. For the most part, though, Finn would haaaaate formal education, which Simon would find baffling, as a lifelong nerd academic who surrounded himself with fellow nerds academics.

So yeah, as Finn grows and it becomes clear he's not cut out for academia like his old man, Simon has to accept that the world they live in is not the same as the one he was raised in himself, and that it might actually be prudent for Finn to learn to use a sword, if only to protect himself. He reluctantly eases up on the curfews and restrictions and gradually allows Finn more freedom to go on adventures with Jake, though he's a nervous wreck every time.

(Maybe Finn convinces him to come along sometimes to prove that it's safe, and Simon actually develops some dungeoneering skills too, in this AU? 👀 As a bonus, we get more scenes like that "I was quite the outdoorsman in my day!" moment in F&C where Simon gets to show off that he WAS a little bit of an adventurer back before the War. Optionally add Marceline on these adventures, too!)

As for The Betty Situation, it could range from "she simply died a thousand years ago and Simon has no choice but to grieve and move on for his new family's sake" to "the way he's cured in this AU plays out similarly to the episode 'Betty' except something goes wrong and now she's on Mars/trapped in a time bubble/whatever and Simon has been lowkey desperately searching for her in all his spare time when not actively taking care of Finn."

I WISH I had the discipline to write this into a proper fic. I WISH I wasn't so chronically indecisive and that I could at least pick a direction for it to go in, lmAO. I couldn't stop thinking about it all day today, ugh, I had to at least toss it out into the ether and share the concept. born to a very chaotic household, marcy’s the youngest of 4

her dad the local drunk and her mom was his high school sweetheart

it became glaringly obvious from a young age that whatever love her parents may have had for each other was long gone by the time she got into the picture

it felt like they were just together because they had already started a family and it was too late to back out now

the older she got, the worse it became. rumors flew around that her parents were cheating on each other, she could hear them fighting every night and she just wished they would throw in the towel and get a divorce already because yes, they were all still a family, but nobody was believing their marriage was anything but toxic

it probably didn’t help that they lived in a mobile home that was waaaay too small to fit all of them and when she was older, marcy came to realize that whatever money they did have that came from her dad was money he got from gambling

it got to a point that her dad owed too much money. he was in a bad way with some worse people and they took it out on her mother who was killed in retaliation

marcy was just thirteen at this point and she was devastated. a girl still needed her mother and in the blink of an eye, she was gone

when she was younger, her older siblings hid the truth from her, saying their mother just died in an accident, but they didn't get into any details

she actually found it out all on her own a few years later when she decided to dig deeper into what happened

needless to say, she cut off her ties from her father when she found out the truth

she was always taught to be tough but despite everything that she had been around growing up, marcy held onto her optimism

she’d always, always choose being kind over anything else

she’s been living in town since she was born, barely even got out of the state, and she’s pretty sure she’ll die here in connecticut tbh because it’s home and she doesn’t know anything else

she’s worked jobs ever since she could so she’s been everywhere. a maid at the local hotel, she painted houses, dogwalked, babysat, had a stint as a waitress at the local diner (she's probably still working there part-time tbh 🤪), a cashier at the local supermarket

she's currently on a music scholarship

she knows exactly what she wants to be when she's older: a singer. she believes that hard work will truly get her there, which is why she's busting her ass off right now and she can't wait to graduate

I've seen some people criticize Marcy's sidelining in S3, and think it was a disservice to not have her fight her way free of the Core. What are your thoughts on this, and how do you think Darcy as a concept relates to Marcy's role in the show and what she learns near the end?

I've seen some people say that Marcy being sidelined in S3 hurt her development compared to Anne and Sasha- what are your thoughts on this? Also, what do you think about Darcy as a concept in relation to Marcy's role in the story?

u sent this ask twice slightly differently and im not sure which version to respond to now so i'll just respond to both as if synthesized as one.

first of all, for all intents and purposes, we do see marcy fight her way free of the core. she rejects the offer to live in a perpetual perfect fantasy with her best friends, and acknowledges that it's okay for them to not want what she wants, even though it hurts. she rejects the idea of indulging in this idealized world that the core represents to the fullest and most sinister possible extent, the idea of ignoring the needs of the many to serve the interests of the smartest, most "deserving" members of society, explicitly calls it a twisted fantasy, and is left to suffer the consequences of her brave resistance to their offer. also, not for nothing, sasha being the one to save marcy, getting up even after darcy slices her through her back with a scythe, is extremely lovely and thematically poignant and no other narrative choice would've been nearly as good here tbh (also it's extremely utenacoded so you know i love that).

but more than that, marcy being sidelined in season 3 isn't a "disservice" to her character, it is her character. as we see most clearly in the flashback in "the beginning of the end," but also towards the end of season 2 when all three girls are together, while anne and sasha obviously do love marcy, they are obsessed with each other. which is especially sad for marcy, because she is also obsessed with both of them. but while sasha may feel left out sometimes because she's white deeply insecure, so the thought of them spending time together and having inside jokes that she doesn't know about kills her; or while anne may feel left out sometimes because she relies on them to form her identity around them, whereas it seems to her like they both have everything figured out (even though they clearly don't lmfao); marcy is the one who has different interests, different skillsets, operates on an entirely different wavelength. anne and sasha both tend to treat marcy quite patronizingly, like "oh there she goes again saying her adorable little smart person spiel isn't she cute" and as much as they adore her, there's a disconnect there, like she isn't a full human being with flaws and wants and needs and agency, and it becomes even more pronounced the more it's revealed just how much anne and sasha mean to each other, the way that their whole world revolves around the other. so yeah, marcy is sidelined. by them.

in retrospect, marcy's character is really well set-up in season 2, because we are primed to see her the way anne sees her. while sasha gets her own episodes establishing her outside of anne's pov, and through that we are given the tools to understand why sasha makes the decisions she does, we only ever see marcy in an episode outside of anne's periphery in season 3, once we already know that "oohhhh she's a little fucked up actually." the thing about marcy is that she is so so easy to love. i remember the moment she was introduced in that flashback montage in "marcy at the gates" my brother turned to me and said "okay she's my favorite character." he thought anne was fine, he hated sasha throughout the entire show (bad taste but whatever he's 12), and he loved marcy entirely and immediately and continued to love her and clap and cheer every time she was onscreen. and judging by what i've seen of the fandom online, this is not an uncommon response. i mean, if i knew these girls in real life when i was their age, marcy would 100% be the one i'd be most eager to befriend. she's intelligent and delightful and expresses just the right amount of bitchy smugness. and i remember that before "true colors" aired people were desperately trying to locate her flaws (like actual character flaws, not "clumsiness"). i saw people say that she's a people-pleaser or too impartial, but honestly i don't think that's true; i think she's very opinionated and has absolutely no qualms about expressing her opinion when she has one. and frankly i do think we see some of her flaws on display in those episodes anyway, like how she overestimates her own intelligence and doesn't actually listen to people unless they agree with her (again, because she thinks she's right all the time). but she's so nice, her "flaw" can't be arrogance, it must instead be that she's too nice, right?

of course, once anne learns what marcy did, we as the audience also, finally, learn what marcy's real flaws are. and it's kind of crazy to me that some people used this reveal as an indication to turn on marcy, because learning that she's fucked up actually made me like her so much more. finally, we get to see marcy as she is and not just as she seems. and we see anne and sasha faced with the realization, the fear and disgust and shock, that their perfect little marcy is a human being, as vulnerable and obsessed and toxic and ugly as them. anne's illusion of marcy shatters, and with it, the illusion that she was a good friend to marcy. anne and sasha were both always too busy looking at each other to notice marcy looking at them. but all three of them existed on the lie that marcy is so intelligent anyway that her emotional needs aren't relevant. maybe they can help her not fall headfirst into a trashcan or trip over her own feet, but it's not like they can relate to her in matters of the mind or heart. she's too rational to have emotional problems, not like they do. she is a rock. she is an island. and marcy is the one perpetuating that myth, putting up that front, so you can't even blame them for falling for it. all the warning signs came too late.

anne and sasha and the audience all have their illusions of who marcy is shattered before them, and this stab through the chest could not be more explicitly represented. the metaphorical death of Marcy the Established Character converging with the literal death of marcy, revealed and enacted by andrias. marcy's ego death in "true colors" becomes extremely literal when she is used as a vessel for the core. darcy isn't just the core merging with marcy's traits in a physical sense, but the representation of who marcy is at her worst. darcy is an awkward girl who loves cupcakes and trips over her own feet and calls her friends dumb jocks to their faces and thinks she's utterly invincible due to the power of her own mind. while marcy is a good person who wants to do good for the world, darcy is an entity that wants to do good for itself. if you exacerbate marcy's bad, selfish choices (such as using the box to trap her friends in another world) to an extreme, darcy is what you get. which is why it's important that marcy resists the allure, the fantasy that drew her in initially. and also why it's important that while marcy is expected by adults to "end world hunger" the only thing we do know that she does as an adult is create fiction. through the life lessons she learns during her time amphibia, she ultimately finds a happy middle ground between ego death and selfishness. she finds herself.

Not long after, their first child was born. Named either after Amity Blight, Olivier's childhood friend, Or named after how she inherited blue hair from her mother's remnant Calamity Powers. Often considered the Avatar of the "Gem of Heart" Ami is an energetic girl with a heart filled with compassion, Kindness and "Ridiculous Optimism." While she loves both her parents, she has a stronger bond with her father wanting to be a powerful mage like he is, and enrolled in Hexside (where her own father serves as a substitute teacher.) While Lou may appear simple minded at first glance, he is actually quite intelligent. Able to figure out complex puzzles, and likes to build things."

Saw your headcanon abut Marcy’s disability and got me thinking about her parents. Marcys dad basically instilled the “you cannot be a burden” mentality into her from a young age. I think he’d be like “it may not be your fault for having this, but it is your fault if you don’t try hard enough”. I'm watching the end of season 3 and Elliot and JD together are so fucking toxic they're so bad for each other I'm going rabid i hate them so much. And they're not even fun toxic like Jordan and Perry.

Today was the first day of my Spring summer Friday night rotation. It is so nice to not work until 9pm.I had a busy day. Lots to do - our system was down yesterday so nothing got done. OG 911 Character Details from Canon Pt 2

Hi y’all I’m back! I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who reblogged the last details post - I sort of just thought people would like it and it would die, so to see it travel and hopefully reach more writers was so great so thank you again!

Details under the cut since I went a little crazy 😅 and if this is your first time seeing this, the first part, and any future parts, can be found under this tag here!

Quick note before I get to the details - always, ALWAYS take details from dialogue or plot over details from the set or props if they contradict each other. The writers have the ultimate say over what happens on the show/for the characters, so whatever they say goes, even if it goes against something props has already laid down (eg, Chim’s birthday, sorry Libra crew. He’s an Aries or a Pisces). So keep that in mind for the future in case some of these details I have which are from props/set are changed in the future, or if you’ve noticed something yourself!

Also if you have questions, I am MORE than happy to answer them, although if you leave them in the tags on this post I’m probably gonna lose them, so if it’s something you’d genuinely like an answer to, drop it in my inbox! Hen’s sunglasses change style over the seasons like her regular glasses do, but she tends to like browline sunglasses.

There are two colors of dispatch polo, and there doesn’t seem to be any rhythm or reason for who wears what. Maroon - Maddie and Linda. Blue - Josh and May. Jamal has actually worn both maroon and blue, so it doesn’t seem to be TOTALLY set in stone although I’ve never seen anyone else switch. Sue is too badass to wear a dispatch shirt.

Both Bobby and Eddie drive 4 door pickups. Bobby’s is navy. Eddie specifically has a black, 2020 GMC Denali 1500 pickup truck (in case you want to specifically look up what the inside of it looks like or what features it has 😂)

Correction to Eddie’s living situation from last post: no next door neighbors, but instead UPSTAIRS neighbors. (Pointed out by Abigail in this ask). Also since someone else was wondering the notes of the last post - no, there is absolutely no discussion on the show of whether or not Eddie rents the apartment or owns it. But based on the fact that it’s 1) LA and 2) an apartment, my guess would be he rents it.

When Maddie isn’t feeling like herself, she tends to straighten her hair rather than curl it. It seems to be more when she’s uncertain about her place in her own and other people’s lives, rather than just when she’s simply worried - eg it’s straight in 2B, when she’s uncertain if she wants to continue working as a dispatcher/is unsure about her relationship with Chim.

For work, Chim, Eddie and Buck all use black duffel bags with a LAFD patch on the top. Hen uses several different cute bags, and Bobby seems to have a plain black duffel bag.

If you’d like to give Maddie a full name beyond “Maddie”, you should use Madeline. (I know, I know, in 4x04 she says Maddie is the name on her birth certificate, and that you should never use props details if they contradict script details, but I always thought that was a super weird exchange in 4x04 which could be explained by Maddie getting a nickname since she was born when Margaret and Phillip, you know, actually loved their kids and showed it, so of course Buck doesn’t get one, and in 4x04, Maddie was trying to avoid the entire issue of why she got one and Buck didn’t. But! Do what you want, and use Madeline as the full version of Maddie if you’d like, since that’s what’s on the BOLO in 2x13 😂)

Athena’s call sign is 727 L30, but she doesn’t have a specific squad car - the number changes throughout the series.

Chim really likes chewing gum, but he’s the only one out of the entire family!

In the real LAFD, there are stations 1 through 114. To avoid confusion while filming on the streets (I’m assuming), our fictional LAFD never uses the number of a real station. So if you want another station for a fic, and you want something that would be real in OUR universe, use the numbers 115 and above. They’ve gone as high as 221 in our universe.

Battalions - station 118 is in Battalion 7, which is also not a battalion in real Los Angeles. The 118 has interacted w/ Battalion 1, which is a real battalion, but other ‘non-real which makes them more likely for our universe’ battalions include numbers: 3, 8, 13, 16, 19 and above.

The COVID timeline in OG’s universe is fucked up compared to the real world’s, so it shouldn’t be used as a way to measure time! They just throw it in wherever it makes sense for the story they want to tell (eg the vaccines in s4 ep 8), since s3 was both done before COVID hit but also airing while it was happening. It makes absolutely no sense for May to graduate in March nor for Chris to be going to what is specifically labeled summer camp, and the vaccine plotline was INCREDIBLY early, even for real life, so don’t use anything from that as a measure of time. I’ve found except in specific examples, eg the two tsunami episodes, it’s very safe to say every episode covers a week - fall holidays on the show line up with their real life counterparts, indicating about the same amount of time is passing for us and them.

On that note - Jee-Yun was born in late January, early February 2021. (Conceived in Pinned, which was end of March/beginning of April, meaning Maddie was around a month along at May’s graduation in May ➡ 42 weeks + 3 days from then = late Jan/early Feb. Which unfortunately means we most likely won’t see her birthday celebrated on screen. If we assume she was conceived on the date Pinned aired, aka the very sexy hotel scene, then January 21st or 22nd would be Jee’s birthday, depending on if she was born after midnight or not.

Buck has had at least one other Jeep between the one Maddie gave him, and the one he has now, which means that when he needs a new car, he is purposefully choosing Jeeps.

With the true nature of King Andrias as an aspiring universal conquerer being revealed does that mean Anne hates Sasha less now? How does she feel about Marcy after the truth was revealed. Anne was pretty upset with what she did and was mostly responsible for getting them all transported to a dangerous world in the first place. It is because of how Marcy saved Sprig, returned her and the Plantars to earth and was mortally wounded was Anne willing to give Marcy another chance? How does Sasha feel about Marcy afterwards? What can be done for the girls to forgive each other and return to being friends? My guess things will never be the same between them again.

     Oh, I don't think Anne's feelings have necessarily changed toward Sasha, per say. While Anne's hatred for Andrias exceeds whatever anger she has toward Sasha for hurting and betraying her trust yet again, it obviously doesn't wipe the slate clean between them whatsoever. Their complicated dynamic goes farther back, than just simply what happened at Toad Tower in Season 1's finale or all of True Colors' events, either. Anne has been pushed around by Sasha ever since they became best friends. Sasha was always ruling over Anne & Marcy playing by her rules of what was morally "right" or "wrong", which anytime Anne tried to speak out of good conscience, as seen with stealing the Calamity Box from that thrift store, Sasha would stomp out any chance of Boonchuy trying to stand up for herself. Sasha went from being a protective leader, to an abusive bully.

     Regarding Anne’s feelings toward Marcy, I believe she’s more crushed than enraged at knowing Marcy was aware on some level about the Calamity Box’s existence and wanted to see if it would actually work or not in sending them all to a different world. Anne thought Marcy was different from Sasha’s rougher nature, but got a serious wake up call that this other friend of her’s is facing their own respective inner demons. I certainly wouldn’t phrase it as Marcy holding the majority of responsibility for why they got stranded in different parts of Amphibia’s region, either. All three of the girls hold accountability for why they ended up in their seriously unfortunate current predicament. It certainly cannot be contributed to just one of them being mostly or fully at fault here because all three are to blame.

-Sasha outright undermined Anne in wanting to go back home for her birthday party and guilt tripped the kid into stealing the Calamity Box.

-Anne should’ve listened to her conscience to stand up for herself, instead of just passively going along with what Sasha & Marcy wanted, overall. The Second Temple episode fully calls her out on not being entirely innocent on this regard, too.

-Marcy shouldn’t have ever taken advantage of them both without even informing these two of her hidden intentions. She presumed they would just go along with where they were going and be thankful to her for doing all this. Regardless of whatever family trouble she has, it was unhealthy over attachment and desperation at its finest to not leave what she thought was paradise.

     That’s what makes Amphibia’s story so nuanced in its portrayal of the friendship between these three kids. Neither one isn’t without fault in their actions. It’s why Anne’s statement to Andrias holds such a strong weight behind it all, “The three of us may have made some mistakes, but you. You’re evil!”, because there’s a lot of truth to this phrasing. Despite the growing baggage Anne has toward Sasha & Marcy, she still does very much want to work things out, if its remotely possible. That’s one of Anne’s biggest defining traits is her loving compassion toward others. Especially those she’s deeply grown to know & love of course, which look no further than how much she’s come to treat Sprig as a little brother, more or less.

     Can the main girl trio genuinely work things out for the better? I’d say, from the preview clips and trailers released thus far for Season 3, it’s certainly leaning into the more optimistic scenario. Things may not ever be the same between them again, but that’s a big part of life is people change and dynamics shift. Sasha may not be their protective leader anymore, however this isn’t the end of the whole world, naturally. Friendships aren’t supposed to operate on one individual holding the figurative baton. It’s about equality, which these three girls have sorely lacked in having because of always doing things Sasha’s way.

     The best thing Anne, Sasha, & Marcy can do for each other as friends is to be honest with themselves about how to become better people as a whole. No more manipulation, dishonesty, or abusive behavior toward one another. Proper communication is key here in smoothing the rough edges of a complicated friendship, such as their’s.

Barb shows us to his room and goes over the mission, telling us how to return back to the “present” after finding out about the door

Open to Mammon’s room, all the brothers are in there bc they’re trying to get Lucifer and MC together, like a horror/scary thing to set the mood; the purpose to get Lucifer and MC alone together to open up; MC’s portal opens up and plops them in Mammon’s room with all the brothers; Lucifer and MC are in Levi’s room to play the game. We leave Mammon's room and immediately have to hide

16-1: Time Loop 2

Lucifer and MC are coming out of Levi's room and we're forced to hide in Lilith’s hidden room.

MC finds themselves standing face-to-face with Belphie, the attic door is open, and he starts hugging MC.

Belphie kills us, then we’re speaking to a voice (Lilith's soul had been trapped, “I knew I picked the right person, I’ve been waiting for so long, you see. Brothers are standing over MC’s corpse and Belphie is out of the attic. There's a flashback of Barb telling us to find out how/who opened the attic door and not to be seen by anyone; however the brothers see us and the body Mammon is holding disappears; MC talks about Lilith having lived happily as a human.

“I tell everyone the story as I heard it from Lucifer;” Diavolo comes in and informs MC they’re Lilith’s descendent. All the brothers start hugging MC and Diavolo asks: “Do you want to hug MC too, Belphegor?”

16-17: The Truth Revealed

Belphie tells us it’s his fault he couldn’t protect Lilith but Lucifer says it was his fault. The screen goes black and we're left with the assumption Lucifer lays out everything we already know based on what he revealed earlier in lesson 11 and in MC's flashbacks of Lucifer swearing loyalty to Diavolo.

16-19: no title

Barb is making and serving tea to the brothers, everyone’s in a good mood.

Lesson 17 starts with everyone acting awkward now with Belphie out of the attic and MC is now tasked with mending his relationships with all the brothers.

Asmo: Ugh, Levi, how many times have you sighed now?

Asmo: Mammon, do you think maybe you could stop pacing around the room grumbling to yourself?

Levi: yeah, it’s super annoying

Mammon: Shaddup! How can I sit still at a time like this, huh? I mean MC went to the PAST!... Alone! Lke, MC may seem like someone who’s really got it together and stuff, but there’s a real boneheaded streak there that pops up at the weirdest times! Boneheaded, weak, and super reckless. Oh, and too damn gutsy! You never know when Marcie’s gonna take some sorta crazy risk! And like, that makes me wanna be there just in case. Like I GOTTA be there, or who knows what’ll happen?

Levi: Mmhm, sure, MC is SOOO special to you… What, are we supposed to be impressed or something?

Asmo: ooh I know exactly what you mean! It’s like you can’t help but what to lie down together on a bed or a sofa and do all sorts of naughty things- 

Satan: You’d better not do that Asmo

Asmo: excuse me? Could that be jealousy I hear, Satan? Relax. I won’t deny that MC is cute, but still, I think you’re pretty cute too Satan, so no need to worry

Levi: Yeah, MC really IS totally cute, don’t you think? And sort of … hard not to like… *grumbles*

Asmo: wait a minute… Levi, am I hearing what I think i’m hearing

Satan: You’ve only ever been interested in yout anime characters. Levi, has something changed?

Mammon: Whoa, is it just me or does that totally sound like a sign that Armageddon’s about to hit?

Levi: hey come on! Stop looking at me like that! Um...um...Asmo! You should go to the past and check to see how things are going!

Asmo: excuse me/ I know you’re just trying to change the subject, but don’t be ridiculous! I mean, you know that’s impossible. The doors into the past are inside Barbatos’s room, you realize?

Levi: Sure, but can’t you use your powers to charm Barbatos or something?

Asmo: ugh… no thank you! I mean, we’re really talking about Barbatos. If my powers did work on him, who knows what he might do to me once he ends up charmed? He might kill me, and i’m too young for that.

Mammon: pff, what’re ya, chicken?

Asmo: okay them why don’t you go seduce him, Mammon?

Mammon: Me? Um...really? … … Oh no no no no! No way that’s happening!

Asmo: but you really considered it for a second there, didn’t you? You considered seducing Barbatos!

Mammon: N-no, I didn’t! I mean, if it were MC, that’d be another story…!

Levi: You don’t need to remind us that you’ve got it bad for MC, Mammon. Keep it to yourself.

Satan: Well, powers of seduction don’t work on MVC to begin with, so you couldn’t do it even if you wanted to. Come to think of it...why are we all so hung up on MC anyways? It’s hard to believe that a simple human could have this kind of effect on us.

Asmo: hmm…I guess MC is just special, you know?

Mammon: ...yeah right. Special, that’s it!

Asmo: Still, let’s be honest. When it comes down to it, out of all of us, I’m the only one Marcie has eyes for!

Mammon: ...huh? What’re you talkin’ about?

Asmo: well it’s only natural, right? I mean, show me a human who doesn’t find me absolutely irresistible

Levi: ...well i’ll have you know that MC said that i was a true friend

Mammon: You’re all dumb as stumps! Have you all forgotten? I was MC’s first, after all, so clearly I’M the one deservin’ of all the love!

Satan: *blushing profusely*...

Asmo; mammon, don’t be intentionally misleading! You ‘ve got satan here thinking that you actually WERE MC’s first. Satan, what Mammon really means is that he was the first one to make a pact, okay?

Satan:...pff, like i care

Levi: if you don’t care, then why do you look so relieved? We can all see it on your face, Satan

Mammon: oh MC…! MC! Come back to us dammit! And soon!

Levi: Wait a minute! Where’d Beel go?

Asmo: Beel? Um, he was right there a second ago. 

Satan: Maybe he went to find Belphie?

B: but to make up for it, Lucifer… from now on, i want you to trust the rest of us more. Look to us for help and support when you need it. Not just me. I mean all of us - including Belphie

Lucifer: But what if that still isn’t enough, even with all of us working together? What then?

Beel: that’s easy. At times like that...you can call on MC to help, of course. Isn’t that right?

L: Yeah. That’s right. 

Beel: I sure hope MC comes back soon. 

Lucifer: Yeah. And by the time that happens, Belphie will probably have woken up, too.

That's right. There exists a dimension where they don't get their MC back. The MC from that dimension has replaced the MC that Belphie killed.

Diavolo and Barb sent MC back in time to figure out who or how the attic door opened. MC had been acting under the notion that they needed the power equivalent of having pacts with all 7 brothers to open the door yet, even in the time loop it's still not clear. One moment we're hiding in Lilith's secret room and the next, we're standing in front of Belphie and the door is open.

Interview with Half Shy (the songwriter of “Monster”)

For the last few months, I’ve been collecting information for a second edition of Exploring the Land of Ooo that will also cover the production of Distant Lands. This means that I’ve started to look into the new songs that we have been graced with this year, and this of course includes “Monster,” the beautiful track from the masterpiece that is “Obsidian”. And so I reached out to the song’s writer, Half Shy, who was kind enough to chat with me via email about the songwriting process!

In many ways, Half Shy is living the creative Adventure Time fan’s dream: She got asked by Adam Muto himself to write a song for “Obsidian” after he heard her music through Bandcamp! (I’ve dabbled in fan music before, and the fact that someone from the show might listen to it just blows my mind.) What an opportunity; I am so excited for her!

Since a second edition of my book won’t be coming out until after all the Distant Lands episodes air, I thought it would be best to share my Half Shy interview now. Read on for the fascinating behind the scenes story of how Half Shy and “Monster” came to be..

GunterFan: What is your origin story? How did you get involved in music, and how did the Half Shy project come to be?

Half Shy: I’ve been making music pretty quietly since I was in high school with a keyboard and guitar. I played one or two shows a year after college when I could find a friend or my brother to get up on stage with me, but I don’t really have that performer gene in me naturally. I get too much in my head and forget what the lyrics are to the song I wrote, or what the next chord is. Total brain freeze. So that whole experience is a bit of a mental drain. It’s something I think I’d like to dig into and figure out, but right now I’m really enjoying the time writing.

Even playing a song for my friends I still get pretty nervous. That’s where the name Half Shy comes from. I’ve always been interested in making things that by their nature draw a bit of a spotlight, but at the same time, I am just really quite nervous about the attention.

I recorded my first songs under my old name Hey V Kay in my bedroom and started putting them up online one at a time. When I got enough I thought about packaging it up into an album, but then got really distracted by learning how to fix up motorcycles and going to automotive tech school. When I eventually got back around to it I named the album Gut Wrenching.

After a few years I realized that I didn’t want the day-in-day-out life of a mechanic, I just wanted to know how to fix cars for myself and to have that knowledge in my back pocket. I got back into making music but grew frustrated at the process of writing and recording songs. I felt like I wasn’t able to capture the ideas I had in my head. Like trying to draw on your computer with a mouse. Doable, but it’s not going to come out like you’d hoped.

So these last couple of years I’ve focused more on learning the technical aspect of it, from the initial ideas and lyrics, to the recording and mixing. During that process I put out Bedroom Visionaries, and while writing I happened upon the name Half Shy in an old Thesaurus which felt instantly right. Learning all of that has been fun, I even went as far as to create my own book to solidify a daily writing routine (lyricworkbook.com). All that has been a bit of a tangent from actually making much music though. I should be getting my books in December from the press so I’m really looking forward to getting back into making more music instead of dealing with printing presses, setting up websites, and sourcing ribbon suppliers.

GF: What is the story behind "Monster"? How did the show get in contact with you?

HS: I keep a log of “Song Starters” with neat things I’ve heard in the world, and I would look through it every now and then and notice just how many came from Adventure Time. Eventually I thought well, I have to make a song about this show that just keeps breaking my heart. It was around the time I was nearly done with the first [Adventure Time-inspired] song “In My Element” that I got an email from Bandcamp saying “someone bought your album (Bedroom Visionaries).”

I get maybe one or two of these a month at most so I love to go in and say hi to the person and say thanks, be curious about who they are, [and] what they’re all about. Turns out it was Adam Muto, the executive producer of the show. (I asked and he has no idea how he happened upon my stuff. He guessed that I must have tagged something #adventuretime and he just happened to see it.) So I sent him an email saying, “Hey wow thanks for checking out my tunes. Also... holy crap you’ve made the best show I have ever seen in my life.” [I] played it real cool like. After finishing up writing my second [Adventure Time-inspired] song “Betty” I couldn’t help but fangirl real hard [and I sent him another message saying], “I’m sorry this is probably awkward, but I really love your show and I wrote these songs about it.” He was incredibly kind and shared them with his Twitter Universe, and a while after that I got a random email from him saying basically, “Hey, I’m working on this thing I can’t talk about, would you be interested?” I was like… well you know I’m pretty busy working at a sign shop so I’m gonna have to pass on this once in a lifetime opportunity (J/K. Obviously I fan-girl squealed and said yes immediately).

We chatted a bit about what the project was going to be and the direction. He mentioned there [would be] two Marceline songs in the special, [and he asked if I] would I be interested in giving the love song a try? Trying real hard to suppress my instant imposter syndrome I was like, “Yea, totally I’d be into giving that a shot!” So I read through the story and loved the idea of the dragon mirrored in Marceline, thinking through how they’ve both built up a protective shell, how she grew tough for a reason, but now she can open up and be vulnerable with PB.

From there I wrote the initial demo with the first two verses mostly intact and we went back and forth a few times editing it down into the final version. I recorded the final parts for the show in my little home studio in Seattle.

GS: When you were writing the song, what emotions, thoughts, or ideas were you channeling? Was there any sort of memory of event that you were trying to artistically "catch" or "recreate" with the lyrics or music?

HS: As far as channeling an emotion, generally I’d say just the experience of existing as a human. It can be so hard to open up and be vulnerable. I can remember that feeling even as a young kid—getting really excited about something and having someone completely trash it or look at you like, “Why are you so interested in that? It’s dumb.” [It causes us to grow] a little more weary to share ourselves because we know that hurt and embarrassment. The pain of being misunderstood is something I think a lot of us can relate to. Then having to decide whether to keep sharing those vulnerable parts of yourself or think, “They’re just not going to get it, I’m going to get hurt, so why bother?” and then stop putting yourself out there. You lose a lot with that thick armor though. You might feel protected, but you’re not feeling a whole lot of anything else other than the weight and chafing of it (I had a whole lot of armor-related metaphors that I didn't end up using.).

I struggle with this in songwriting too. I’m not the bolt-of-lightning type. There are pages and pages of cliches, total garbage, bad jokes, and cheesy lines that I have to get through in order to get to something that I am excited to put out there into the world: “Here I did this thing, I know it’s a little (this or that), but I made it... What do you think?” It’s hard to open yourself up to hearing the other end of that question.

I filled about 5 little pocket notebooks just thinking through the story, ideas, and trying to get this song right. I wanted it to feel familiar and honor the past songs of the show ([e.g.,] using the ukulele and referencing a few of the familiar chords from “I’m Just Your Problem”) but also be pretty open and vulnerable and different for [Marceline]. [I wanted to] show that she’s going through some tough emotions but also figuring herself out and growing.

GF: I feel like “Monster” is, at its core, an ode to the “Bubbline” ship. How do you feel about your song being intimately connected to one of the most famous LGBTQ+ relationships in animation? Do you have any general thoughts on Marcy and PB, Bubbline, etc.?

HS: Oh, I’m a total fan girl of Bubbline. The whole story of how Rebecca Sugar and Muto slowly morphed it into this deeper relationship is just great. As a part of the LGBTQ community myself it really means so much to see the representation of characters like yourself portrayed in an intelligent way. Growing up I was too young to fully understand what was going on but I saw Ellen getting cancelled, and [I] heard people around me saying they’d never watch her show again after she came out. That stuff sinks in as a kid and so to have these characters who are not only intelligent, but funny, complex, and unapologetically strong who also happen to be queer is really great. I love that the story here isn’t about their orientation, but that they’re people struggling with how to be open and vulnerable in a relationship.

It feels like something sci-fi and animated shows do so well—to show that ridiculousness of limiting who a person should and shouldn’t love. Marceline is a 1000+ year old half-demon/vampire and PB was born from the Mothergum of an apocalyptic radioactive world, but you’re going to get hung up on them loving each other? It sort of brings it into perspective in a really interesting way.

GF: Do you have any other thoughts about the experience that you'd like to share?

HS: Just how lucky, thankful, and honored I feel to be a part of my favorite show, writing a song for one of my favorite characters. It’s also incredibly cool how the people on the show are so willing to connect and collaborate with their fandom. Everyone [on the production crew] was very open and a real joy to work with.

Just dropping by to let you know that I’m actively working on the Brook Lives AU, and the first chapter should be out relatively soon!

As for plot lines, the first one that comes to mind definitely everything surrounding Bobby Begins Again. How would having Brook with him change everything he went through after the fire? Would he have almost overdosed? Would he have gotten into rehab faster? How is her presence going to impact his suicide plan? (my thought is that he's still planning on going through with it, but he's going to wait until she's 18 and/or in college/a grown up/doesn't need him anymore.)

And what about that plane crash in season 1? Is he going to go get drunk if he has Brook waiting for him to pick her up from whoever is watching her during his shift? And if he does... how much more guilty is he going to feel about it? Because he sees his actions as being the same thing that cost Brook her mother and brother... the same thing that cost her her self confidence and "beauty".

And then how is her presence going to impact his relationship with Athena when they first start dating? Is Brook going to know that they're dating, or are they hiding it from her just as much as they're hiding it from Athena's family? What's going to make Bobby feel worse, lying to Brook, or asking her to keep a secret?

Another factor to this... when he goes to church with Athena during their pre-date, does he pick up Brook first? Do all three of them go? Does he share with Athena how much he needs to protect people, because he wasn't able to protect Brook? Does Athena share with him her own feelings of helplessness when she found May after the suicide attempt and how she felt she wasn't able to protect her either? Is that another commonality he and Athena find?

And definitely everything that goes on in Dosed. Maybe instead of it taking place on what would have been Brook's 13th birthday, it's on what would have been Bobby Jr's 15th birthday, and Brook and Bobby are both having a really hard time. Or what if it's still on Brook's birthday, and (if you're going with the "she's got scars" idea) she's too self conscious to want to invite anybody over or celebrate. And Bobby tries, he genuinely tries as hard as he can to build up her confidence, but she can see the guilt in his eyes every time he looks at her. And when Bobby gets dosed, he still sees a vision of her... but he sees her without the hurt in her eyes, with the same confidence she had before the fire - he sees her the way he would if he wasn't overcome with guilt. He sees the dream of what she could have been without his mistake.

And when Athena asks him to move in, is he going to talk to Brook about it? What would that conversation look like? Is she the one who tells him that... it's okay to move on. It's okay that he's imagining a future with somebody who isn't Marcy.

And when Bobby and Athena get married, is she going to be Bobby's "best lady"?

And of course everything with the sniper... how afraid is she going to be that she's going to lose Bobby when they figure out a sniper is out there and going after firefighters? Does she beg him not to go to work, to stay at home until all of this is over? And then when he does get shot then it's days before he's awake... how is she going to react when he finally opens his eyes again? Will Bobby wake up to see Brook and Athena praying together? Is Brook leaning against Athena, tears on her cheeks, as she hopes and prays that he'll wake up?
