Yelan. Yelan, Madame Yelan, what on earth is this outfit. Granted, please don't get me wrong, I loved and was enthralled when I first caught a glimpse of her (also any glimpse of Yelan thrills me) in it, but geez. And yet, they're so consistent with her design;
— The single-sleeved jacket is a brilliant little nod to her mantle but making it something utterly hers within something that is an AU. No mystical beasts or Tsaritsa here! — The straps near her neck are a very different, but quite nice, summer-like rendition to Hoyo's consistent choice for Yelan of a halter/high neck (even the Pizza Hut ad had her in a turtleneck). A lower neckline is something that they actively seem to avoid for her so far. — The amount of see-through fabric is simply a call-back to her default outfit, but rather than spots of it left and right, it's her full-midriff and leg. It fits, it's nothing new. And if anything, funnily enough, I'd seen numerous artworks pop up of Yelan in swimming attire, and all of the designs felt a little off. I don't actually envision her in a bikini like many draw her, but instead, something like what you see here from her neck, to the midriff to the hips. Much more fitting in my opinion, actually, so I like seeing that concept in an outfit in circumstances where you'd expect a lot of summer influence. — And a detail that makes me laugh: the hand that has the white glove in her canonical outfit is also white here, and same with the black one. Also, the bracelet. God, I love consistency even if it seems trivial. But nothing's ever trivial to me guys, you know this.
All in all, thirst trap, sure, but also, good decisions were made.

I LOVE THE BRAID. I /LOVE THE BRAIN SO MUCH/. ]#[ i love the color. i just love everything about this woman's design. and i also love how she does not look like she's from liyue at all. ]#[ if we look at colour schemes. but she is. we know she is. yes yes i know; /most/ designs are because of their elements. i know. ]#[ but still. ]#[ granted-- i'll even counter that take with one of my own: 'night orchid'. :) ]#[ okay okay i'M DONE SIMPING over one yelan. ]#[ i guess. ]#[ let's see if i can get some writing done. it's high time. ]

Idk if this has been done but Katara/azula? If it has then aang/azula
katara/azula is one of my favorite ships that doesn’t actually conceivably work (for so many reasons) but i love their dynamic so much. they’re kind of secondary foils (fyi azula’s primary foil is sokka and katara’s primary foil is zuko) but it really is so tragic the way they are both fourteen year old girls with the most horrific mommy issues you’ve ever seen. the best benders of their respective elements and they’re literally in the eighth grade. they hate each other so much, there’s no 4D chess like azula and sokka it’s just on sight. their final fight scene blows my mind every time, even just thinking about it rn it’s crazy!!!! there is no possible universe wherein any sort of relationship between these two could conceivably work out, but i love thinking about them having the craziest beef and kind of relishing in that feeling of hating someone so much that they kind of consume your every thought, much like having a crush. the fine line between hatred and adoration. the thrill of smashing a mirror.
aang and azula is kind of funny to me like i don’t think it’s popular enough to piss me off but it’s also just kind of random. like they do have quite a bit in common (child prodigies with the responsibility of their entire world resting on their shoulders they are baby atlases fr) but also i think you’d have to change azula’s entire personality for them to conceivably be in any kind of partnership. i do think aang having an evil goth gf is funny (although arguably katara encouraging him to do ecoterrorism with her does count for something) but like. kind of weird to date your murderer. kind of a flex also though??? i guess??? if anyone could pull the girl who literally killed you it’s aang. i do think azula is a dyke tho so that’s a nonstarter. but it’s kind of cute in a deeply absurd + strange way..

Thumbprint Challenge
Thanks @oh-no-another-idea for the tag!
Rules: look back on your work, both past and present, finished and unfinished. What are five to ten narrative elements or tropes that continuously pop up in your work? Give a list of these things!
Back at my old work? Okay...not sure how much of these count but here are the commonalities:
Found family/importance of friendship. The focus on best friends from when I was a kid is very prominent in childhood writing and friendship is still a key part. Interpersonal relationships are a very important theme across everything.
Female main characters. Not sure if this counts, but almost all of my childhood works were about girls. My first male main OC was a character named Julian/Mikey (changed his name) in an old draft of TSP. Hell, my first male POV was my Warriors cats fanfic (they were OCs though) and the first time I wrote a male voice in first person was a character named Jesse in eighth grade.
Queer undertones. Looking back at my old work, a lot of my main characters were sapphic or ace/aro spec. Anahi and Marlis from what later evolved into SOTL were very gay for each other. Even Mossflower and Lemonfrost from my Warriors fanfic. The aforementioned Jesse was asexual-coded. Christy and Trish in TEOS. It was just always there as I hadn't figured myself out yet.
Dialogue-driven storytelling. Maybe not in early early writing, but like age 8 onward included a lot of dialogue. I've always been more character focused than environment focused, so I'd say this adds up.
Intelligent main characters. Most of my protagonists were emphasized to be very, very smart. It's interesting that I'm not a STEM person, but I am a former "gifted kid" so that may have something to do with it, but I usually emphasized this with a STEM field they were interested in. Christy from TEOS, math nerd. Hollyn from Perspectives, science geek. Twinkle in my bear cubs series as a kid, astronomer. Even in the Warriors fanfic the first POV is Mossflower the medicine cat. The only pre-high school time I can find where I emphasized intelligence that wasn't in a STEM field is Anahi, who was very literature based.
Multiple main characters. I liked a group of people, even if it was one POV. TSP D1 followed Alexia and Aurora, then they ran into four other people. 3+ was my usual. I guess it comes from the interpersonal relationships themes, like #1 talked about.
Fantasy elements. Man, I almost never write in realistic fiction. I mean, my earliest works were, but then I'd occasionally have an anthropomorphic animal pop up and now it's fantasy. Now, the only realistic fiction WIP I have on the shelf is Perspectives. Arguably IWAJAD because I guess someone can have a vivid dream where a character arc is forced upon them but idk.
Dramedies. I loved to incorporate humor among things I thought were high stakes. I like to be angsty but that doesn't stop me from being very silly. I mean, look at TSP D1. They are threatened to be killed and I still have humor in there. Good? No, but I still tried.
Communication I realize is a prominent theme. Oftentimes, things are not resolved due to not communicating, or I show communication allowing a character to experience comfort, or how not listening to someone leads to trouble, or how hiding a part of yourself isolated you, or acting like someone you're not pulls the wrong people in... So much, man.

Hi! Can you explain the concept of "Ancients" in Danny Phantom? Meaning that these creatures are ancient in age, or like creatures that existed originally in the phantom zone?
Thanks for the ask! I'll try my best to answer, but there's not really one solid answer here.
The only mentions of the "Ancients" in the canon is in the episode Reign Storm. These were a group of powerful ghosts who sealed Pariah Dark (the ghost king) away and stopped his reign of terror. According to this info, the Ancients would have existed back in the time when Pariah was reigning, and while we don't have an actual timeline for this, it's safe to assume it was a long time ago.
That doesn't tell us much about the ages of these ghosts though, considering that we have no idea how long these ghosts existed or if they still exist at all.
Fanon has a lot of different takes on what Ancients actually are and who qualifies as one. Since there's so many different headcanons for this, I'm not gonna be able to outline very much except the ones I know offhand.
The general take I've gathered on what Ancients are, according to fanon, is that they are very powerful ghosts, and probably also very old in terms of age.
Also, when speaking about Ancients in terms of fanon, I don't think it's referring to the specific group of Ancients that took down Pariah, rather a more general group of ghosts that fit similar criteria.
Some of the ghosts that people headcanon as Ancients include: Clockwork, Pandora, Nocturn, Undergrowth, Vortex, and even Frostbite.
These ghosts all are extremely powerful, and while we don't have ages for any of them, it's safe to assume that at least Clockwork and Pandora have existed for a very long time, given that Clockwork maintains the timeline as a 4th dimensional being, and Pandora is literally THE Pandora, who in myth is the first woman on Earth.
The other thing they all have in common, minus Pandora and Frostbite, is that they each represent or are defined by an element. Clockwork=Time, Nocturn=Sleep/Dreams, Undergrowth=Plants, Vortex=Storms.
We don't know the origins of these ghosts either, but the only one who is similar to other ghosts that are implied to be humans (Ember, Johnny, Kitty, Desiree) is Pandora, especially when you consider her myth. The others, well, it's arguable since their backstories are never given. But it would make a lot of sense for these ghosts to have come from the Ghost Zone rather than the real world, given how much their elements define who they are, rather than their personalities.
What's most interesting is that these ghosts have very godlike/mythological qualities. Obviously, Pandora is literally mythological. But these characters' powers, personalities, and motivations, tend to come directly from what they represent. Clockwork is cryptic because time is. Undergrowth wants to grow as much as possible because, well, guess what plants like to do. Vortex is destructive and volatile, because that's how storms are.
So, long answer short, there's not really a solid answer to the fanon concept of "Ancients." But the running theme seems to be ghosts that are extremely powerful, represented by an element, and/or have mythological qualities. These are ghosts who are very similar to mythological gods.

Omg okay so. HTTYD 3: The Hidden World is, in my opinion, a good solo movie. It is NOT, however (and this is popular among many fans I see), a good sequel, as it blatantly disregards lore from not only the series’, short movies and (questionably canon) games, but also arguably the movies themselves. They should have went with the original concept of ‘Night Fury Cave’, and I hold this opinion within my very heart and soul.
Some spoilers for both the TV franchise and the books. This is really long, so sorry.
First of all, the entire message goes against the point of the franchise itself. HTTYD1 is a lesson on not judging/seeing the best in others, despite what others are saying. It’s about being brave enough to be yourself and do what you trust is right, even if it goes against what you’ve been taught/ what others think. The dragons and Vikings are at war, but Hiccup realises that Hey, They Aren’t So Bad Actually, and refuses to harm them even at the very real risk of being turned on by his community. This message is more or less continued in HTTYD2- though the overall moral is that you must learn to grow up, the fact remains that the vikings and dragons fight for what’s right, despite the enemies they’re undoubtedly provoking.
The Hidden World takes one look at this, considers it. And then takes a bat to it.
At first glance- and as a solo movie, which is what it should have been- this message of having to say goodbye, and doing what’s right even if difficult, are fine. Great even. However, the main problems arise when put in to context of the franchise: this movie practically erases all the progress and work from the entire rest of the show. Of course you could argue that Hiccup NEEDED to befriend the dragons first IN ORDER to send them away, but that only raises more questions— if the above ground world is so dangerous for them, why didn’t they just leave themselves, with no intervention needed? Where does One Viking get the right to send away entire races of deadly creatures because ‘it’s too dangerous’ (and weren’t they defending themselves perfectly fine before they bonded)? Most importantly, and one the one I have most issue with, how is the environment supposed to function when unbelievable amounts of dangerous apex predators suddenly disappear?
All these questions and more deserve their own posts, but I want to keep this (relatively) simple so it hopefully doesn’t get too out of hand.
I feel that the reason for this decision was simple. Dreamworks wanted an end to the money making series, and the ending of the books they’re (pretty loosely) based off provided a good scapegoat. We know for certain this is the inspiration for the ending, as the final monologue is the same as in the books. However. There are many things that don’t make sense with this decision that support my statement of ‘they wanted a quick and easy ending’. The first is that it doesn’t match up with the TV series at all, which leads quickly to the next and likely most notable point- never, in the entire rest of the movies or shows, did they follow the book so closely. Ever.
I mentioned previously that the adaption to film is ‘pretty loose’. This is an understatement. Perhaps the only things that these franchises have in common is the title, some names and relationships, and the fact that they both have Vikings and dragons. Maybe some vague design cues for the Vikings. Trust me when I say that is IT.
And we’re perfectly fine with that! Ecstatic, even- both are incredible ideas, and anyone who’s consumed both almost certainly hold affection for both, though in different ways. The dragons are incredibly designed yet uniquely different in both, the relationships are intriguing, yet fairly different in both, and the conflicts are interesting, you guessed it! But different in both. This leads to the issue of The Hidden World- of all times to reintroduce the book elements, why now, in the final instalment? I’ll tell you why. To put this bitch to REST in the easiest way they could. Also coincidentally the worst way.
The books and TV instalments don’t only differ with relationships, designs, characters and their personalities, and plot- though those are all obviously very important changes, to the point where some characters would not be recognised at ALL as their counterparts if not for the name. No, probably the biggest and most prominent difference is the COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORLD-BUILDING.
That’s right. even if you only changed the names of the current TV franchise, you would NEVER be able to link the two series’ to the same universe- at least, not without some VERY impactful reaches.
In the books, the war is not the backstory- it’s the result of building tension THAT WE SEE growing throughout the novels. This contrasts directly with the already-present animosity in the movies. In the books, the dragons have a language that hiccup can speak (another point for ‘the dragons are sentient’ which I may or may not mention later- why are they acting like wild animals in the 3rd movie if it’s reportedly based on these books?), and are practically kept as pets or work animals, like dogs or horses, with Vikings having multiple dragons each with the jobs of flight/transport and hunting respectively. They are used for the Vikings’ convenience, with the overbearing conflict being that they used to be equals, and the dragons are not happy. THIS is what leads to sending the dragons away- they cannot coexist because they don’t, as a whole, see each other as equals. They will always be fighting for power, and the war will solve nothing, and so the dragons will be hidden until the humans wise up.
This ending is so unfit for the movie franchise- whose whole point is basically that coexistence and mutual respect IS possible and wonderful- that it’s not even funny. Why is this random man, who we’ve never seen before and are supposed to believe ‘killed all the night furies’, where they draw the line? They have faced way bigger threats before (albeit mainly in the shows, which not everyone has watched [though that’s no excuse to nerf the protagonists for the sake of conflict]), and this guy doesn’t even seem to know his stuff anyway (again, deserves its own post, unfortunately).
The answer is it’s not. It never has been, I doubt it ever will be.
But fine. Say that they really, genuinely wanted to tie in the books, and this was the intimate goal. Why stop there? This ending may not make sense with the context it was given, but if they used more ideas from the books, surely it would have made more sense?
What I’m about to say is coming from a place of love. Of understanding. Of ‘this is my favourite character and I’d never recover if this happened but he must take one for the team’.
If they were set on this. If there was no other way for this to end. If this was IT.
They should’ve killed off Snotlout.
LISTEN. I don’t know if you’re all that familiar with this franchise in the first place, but Snotlout Jorgenson is the most specialist guy ever. Embodiment of ‘he’s such a Guy I want to put him in a blender’. Of course, this adoration is largely due to the development he goes through in the series’ and not really in the more recent movies (and also maybe a bit subjective 🙈) but I digress. This guy was the first ever recorded instance and possibly the cause itself of my reliable formula for my favourite characters in every media I’ve ever consumed- Guy That Could Be My Son. I love that little rascal with questionable morals with my whole heart.
.. which is why it’s physically painful to see what they did to him in the 3rd movie. If they smashed the messages of the previous movies with a bat into an unrecognisable corpse on the floor, then Snotlout Gary Jorgenson is in a body bag at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. All his development out the window, though this could, if you were generous, possibly be attributed to his character in the books. I would honestly prefer they killed him off to what they did, though this particular interpretation of him is already dead to me so maybe it wouldn’t make much of a difference.
In the books, Snotlout is a the antagonistic cousin of Hiccup (leading to the fairly popular headcanon of them being cousins in the movies) who later sacrifices himself by disguising himself as Hiccup and valiantly charging into battle in order to distract the enemies so Hiccup can escape, leading to his death. If this happened in the movies- just this one, simple detail- the ending could be explained. A direct loss of someone close to Hiccup could ‘open his eyes’ to the danger they are putting themselves in for the hope of ‘friendship’, and force him to realise that it’s safer for dragons and Vikings to just… let go. Make the ultimate sacrifice of saying goodbye for the sake of their individual peoples’ safety.
Unfortunately the writers did not think this through. At all. And the ending is the only thing they took from the books because the two franchises are practically unrecognisable from each other anyway.
I could talk for HOURS all about the points I skipped; my complicated thoughts on the light furies, the inconsistencies about the world building that make No Sense at all, the blatant mischaracterisations that only serve to make the protagonists look like incompetent coworkers who kinda hate each other rather than the near lifelong friends they really are and to make the villains seem more threatening than they actually are, and of course the ‘domestication’ of the dragons/ the removal of their intelligence despite the many reassurances that they stay because they WANT TO and they had MULTIPLE CHANCES TO LEAVE and have proven TIME AND TIME AGAIN that they stay for COMPANIONSHIP and NOT NECESSITY and the topic of animal instincts and finding a mate has ALREADY BEEN DISCUSSED IN THE SNOGGLETOG SHORT MOVIE-
But this is already way longer than I thought it’d be 🥰 if you read all this way. Um. Sorry 🥺🥺 thanks for the option to rant my family are tired of hearing this 😼 toodles

FNaF Theory: Candy Cadet DECIPHERED

Look, if you're here, you're probably familiar with Candy Cadet, so let's just recap the three stories he tells real quick.

These stories famously contain the underlying element of five things becoming one thing, which many believe applies to Molten Freddy, a combination of the original five MCI animatronics.
However, not all of these stories represent the same thing. There are too many differences. And in the Five Kittens story, no five things become one thing. There are five kittens, of course, but at no point to these kittens fuse into one kitten.
I think the story that fits the story of Molten Freddy best is...
The Five Keys

The most common answer to when William combines the five endoskeletons is when he inexplicably destroys Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy in the Follow Me mini-game.
This is because of Henry's line in the Insanity Ending, "He lured them back. Back to a familiar place, back with familiar tricks." Presumably the "familiar place" is the safe room where the kids originally died, and as of FFPS, saying "Follow Me" is the familiar trick that William used to lure them to said place.
And note that the Five Keys story begins by saying that the woman was "sealed in a small room." The safe room.
It's also the most similar because the five keys are melted together in a furnace, just like the five endoskeletons of the original MCI robots are melted together.
This also speaks to William's possible motivations in doing this: trying to save the children. It'd otherwise not be known why he's creating Molten Freddy, but is it possible that he's attempting to appease or release the spirits by bringing them all together?
Obviously it didn't work, but William doesn't necessarily know that. Even in The Fourth Closet, half the shit William does is just because he wants to see what'll happen.
Nevertheless, this story most closely (in my opinion) matches the theory that Follow Me was William creating Molten Freddy.
The Five Orphans

The five orphans are the five murdered children of June 26th, the burglar is the man who killed them, William Afton, and the kind man who brought them "toys and gladness" is the Puppet.
The toys specifically ties into the fact that the Puppet has always been associated with the Prize Counter and giving out toys, plushies, and gifts. FFPS itself doubles down on this, giving us even more information about the Puppet.
And the house that the Puppet brought all of the kids to is Freddy's. The Puppet kept them there, and kept them safe, as it was arguably built with security features in mind as well. During Give Gifts, Give Life, the Puppet does give gifts to the dead children.
The man murdering the five children is definitely reminiscent of William Afton killing on the night of June 26th, but the real question is who the "kind man" is supposed to be, and it could either be looked at as the Puppet, or Henry, but I think the Puppet fits better for the reasons I've just stated.
The other question is... what does it mean that the kind man stitched the bodies together and buried them in one coffin?
I definitely think "there was a knock at the door" implies that the stitched together bodies were knocking at the door, but it could also be interpreted as the police. If the police were knocking at the door because of this, then it definitely points more to Henry.
This could be representative of whatever the Puppet does to the kids in Give Gifts, Give Life, which I'm still not super sure about.
Which finally brings us to the one I'm least sure about:
The Five Kittens

This story does not contain the "Five things becoming one thing" element that these stories are known for. There are five things, kittens, but only one of them dies and gets stitched together.
My best guess was to think of groups of five where one is singled out.
Perhaps Cassidy, standing out as the most powerful of the missing children and the one that can't (or chooses not to) bind to her physical suit the way the others do. But all five kids were murdered presumably on the same night, and even if they weren't, Susie was "the first," if not the first victim of Afton then the first victim of the MCI, so it doesn't make sense for Cassidy to be the only one murdered by the snake.
My next thought was that the five children could be not the missing children of June 26th, but instead the five Afton/Emily kids: Charlie, Sammy, Michael, Elizabeth, and Michael's brother.
Under this analogy William and Henry would be the snake and the boy, and the random kid that William killed would be Charlie.
...except that doesn't work either. William didn't kill Charlie randomly, his own kids probably weren't in consideration to be murdered, Henry doesn't kill William afterwards in order to put Charlie back together, it's unclear what role the shoebox would play, and at no point does Henry ever think "Y'know what, I'll let William just do one horrible thing to see if that gets it out of his system." It's against his character.
This story is also not consistent with the idea that all three are representing the same thing: Molten Freddy, because all five kittens aren't combined into one mega-kitten.
UPDATE: The Five Kittens, Pt. 2

It's a couple days later. After talking this through with The Boys on Discord I've realized there's another interpretation: the story skips five nights because all five kittens, one per night, were eaten by the snake, and the boy stitched "the remains" (of all five) into one and put "the kitten" (the amalgamation of all five) into the shoebox.
Now, the language here is vague. I think these stories are mysterious enough ("That night, there was a knock at the door") to argue that things could've happened between the lines of the story that we have to figure out to discover its true meaning. The idea of there being this extra step doesn't debunk the theory for me.
And now, the picture becomes clear:
The five kittens are the missing kids, just like the other two stories.
The snake that eats them is William.
The boy is Henry, and he knows that William is potentially a danger, but risks working with him anyway, perhaps not necessarily willingly giving him a child to kill, but instead just letting him perform in the restaurant.
Henry feels guilty, so he takes the five children stitched together, i.e. Molten Freddy, and put it into the shoebox, i.e. the Box, i.e. the fake pizzeria from FFPS.
As seen in the Insanity Ending, Henry does feel guilty for unwillingly helping turn William into a monster, so it makes sense for him to be "full of regret" and try to put an end to the kittens' suffering.
I'm very confident in this interpretation.
And that, my friends, is Candy Cadet.
TL;DR - The Five Keys is Molten Freddy from William's perspective, The Five Orphans is Molten Freddy from the Puppet's perspective, The Five Kittens is Molten Freddy from Henry's perspective.

Bonus blog *tw emotional
In an effort to hold on to something that I already feel slipping from within my grasp I wanted to talk about the last last day in Japan because it was one of the most memorable.
Thanks to my lovely Indian friend Vishnu’s suggestion we decided let’s have a beach day as our last day together. Being from Miami (i don’t know if I’ve mentioned that yet) it was time to go back into my element for a change. I quickly donned on an outfit appropriate for only the most Miami of ghettys and off we went on a 45 min train ride to a little town by the lake with some sand on it. The water was nice and cold so it was very refreshing and we all bought drinks on the beach and slowly sipped them while I played music from my waterproof speaker. There was just something else in the air that day as everyone was cheesing, chit chatting, and laughing about virtually anything (probably my jokes tbf). Lunch was mostly uninteresting and then before we knew it we had to get dressed for the farewell dinner. This dinner reservation was for three hours and included unlimited food and unlimited drink (not the good kind however). It really sucked that I had eaten lunch not even three hours prior or i would’ve torn that up but instead I went with a more mild approach to it. We decided that night that we were gonna play uno, one last uno session with all of us in one room together talking as a coherent albeit at times dysfunctional family. Before that I had to make good on my promise to get one last sweet treat for Aulora (apparently all the gum and mints I asked for started to add up??) and we walked through a lightly raining Kyoto as I navigated us back to the hotel. 
Although I may not be an English major like shortcake or Sebastian I’ll try my best to paint the picture of this uno game for you. 14 or so strangers all sitting around in a circle on a tatami mat who traveled together for almost a month all for their own reasons who laughed together, shared meals together, and spent far too much time together for people who had just met. We’ve scaled mountains together, we've sat eerily still for four hours of ancient Japanese theatre, and we have gone back on the 5 am train maybe one too many times. People from different backgrounds, majors, career paths, aspirations, and hobbies all came to Japan in search of something different yet we all found common ground with each other. Looking from the outside in you would not be able to tell the fact that we had met a month ago, multiple inside jokes were flying, there was never a dull moment or moment of silence, and everyone had a smile on their face from ear to ear. It’s the kind of behavior you’d expect from an old group of longtime friends getting back into the rhythm of things after being apart for so long. Each member of that circle contributing something to make us one cohesive yet at times dysfunctional family. The type of group you could write a multi faceted short novel series about. We all had different departure times and plans so some of us had to be up at four in the morning to catch an early bus out of Tokyo, they did not let that stop them as we all braved on for as long as we can, Like most things, time came in to rain on our parade as the bell tolled and we lost our first friend. Unfortunately it was the one that hit the hardest as Vishnu stood up to say goodbye to us. Vishnu, the third part of a trio that I never knew I needed. Who at first would not stop talking about urban planning, who led us to arguably more Indian restaurants than Japanese ones, who knew how to make everyone around him feel included and paid attention to. I’m gonna miss our idol watch sessions, the constant back and forths we would have about any topic other than our readings, I know we’ll see each other soon so I guess until then I’ll see you later little bro. Since everyone wanted to be him so bad one by one people started leaving to go finish packing their bags or try to recover any sleep they might hope to get before an arduous journey home. Hugs were had, tears were shed and promises to hang out in the future echoed in the room as everyone started to realize our time together was coming to an end. Eventually everyone left taking with them a part of what made our group so special, so whole. As Raj and I were getting ready for bed we hear a knock on our door from the one person we did not get to say goodbye to: Uncle Sebastian. I’ve written many times about how much of an uncle role he has had on the trip but I sincerely hope that he gets everything he wants in his future not only because he deserves it but because the world would be a better place if so.
Fast forwarding to today it was actually time to say goodbye as we ride the Shinkansen a mere five strong from our original 26. As we arrive to our forked path but literally and figuratively, I couldn’t help but show a little emotion, as my lips quivered, my eyes started to water, and my mouth unable to form any words I said goodbye to Xander. Xander the only one that was always down to hangout with Raj and I no matter the occasion, whatever we were doing he was there, including traveling with us on that final day. With him gone it felt as though we were truly back to where we started. A goodbye hug to both Leina-chan our faithful navigator, tour guide, and close friend and one to Eliza, who is never satisfied unless there is a sweet treat present. Then there were two and Raj and I end our trip the same way it began, with each other, only this time our heads are held high for a different reason. What was once excitement about the new experiences in Japan turns into excitement for the future, in the connections that we’ve made, the memories that will be forever etched into our hearts as we can forever smile and reminisce on our month in Japan. 
I could go on and on about all the different ways we said goodbyes, the different people I’ve met, what they all mean to me but frankly as I said often many times during this trip “I ain’t reading or writing all of that” I hope that as this chapter in my life comes to a close I can enter a new chapter of my life bringing those that I met in this chapter into my next one. Its been fun writing to those of you who take the time to read all these blogs, in the interest of not rambling on (even though I already have) its time to say Goodbye for real this time. hearthome posting about Skag Domestication & Imported Pets.
Pandora houses (a lot of) predator-class creatures, super-sized insectoid-arachnids, and various megafauna. pretty much all of which are extremely territorial to the point of people openly describing the wildlife as “more than happy to attack you.” (hell, even the plants can be hostile.)
skags are one such creature; kind of a fucked up reptile-dog with a vertical, bisected mouth. they’ll eat genuinely anything, but whatever they cannot digest is regurgitated. (they also eat and defecate out of the same hole. i.e. their mouth. something something, circular/looping digestive tract.) they’re pack animals, similar in hierarchy structure to wolves or hyenas. They communally raise their young, and sometimes split off from their family pack when they’re old enough to mate.

within the games, they serve as early, non-human enemy fodder, with stronger variants as you progress. throughout the series, there’s been several instances of clearly domesticated skags. Scrappy, in BL1. Dukino, Willy, and Ol' Pukey, in BL2, and Benjamin Blue in BL:TPS. (there was one or two in BL3, owned by Tiny Tina, but the wiki has yet to list them by name, and I don’t feel like traipsing through the game itself to find out.) this also counts for skags that are used as mounts, in place of a horse-like animal.
so you might be wondering: “Steven! Why in the everliving Hell would anyone want to even get close to these animals, let alone domesticate them?” or maybe not, idk-
to which i answer, uhhHhh, humans will packbond with anything lol
a lot of skags are used for protection, since they're tougher than dogs, armored, and some even have elemental affinities! there's not really any dedicated "domestic skag" breeding programs, as most pet skags are taken from the wild & hand-raised at a very young age.
which got me thinking: Pandora (as well as the border planets in general) visually lacks any kind of common domesticated pets. cats and dogs alike are referenced enough, but are never shown in any of the games. one of Brick’s dogs is shown via a flashback, but only illustrated. there’s no in-game models of cats, dogs, or hell, even birds (aside from Bloodwing, but she’s an alien bird so it doesn’t count).
and you’d think, for a planet teaming with humans that came from other settled planets... that we’d see at least some pets they brought over. right?
in-game, nah. but they clearly Exist on Pandora & her moon, Elpis, and arguably on any other planet in the border worlds, thanks to characters referencing them: Handsome Jack had a cat (or two), several characters mention their love or distaste for cats, Brick as a whole owned two/three separate dogs (that were unfortunately killed, and who’s paws he wears in remembrance), and that’s just stuff off the top of my head!
so like. where are the cats? where are the dogs?
they’re part of the world, but not important enough to the story to be shown in-game. but they are There, and there's a pretty sizeable stray population on Pandora alone; mostly centralized in settlements and cities. in the wild it's generally kept down by all the local fauna. you'll see plenty of "proper" pet cats, dogs, and other pets in corporate-funded settlements and big cities.
metatextuality, they were most likely out of the budget. or it’s possible the writers were like “this would be a good running joke, where we mention earth pets/animals but never have any show up (except in One inspirational poster that, in-universe, might just be a drawn illustration).”
but that's honestly just a guess on my part lol

Chemical Weddings in RWBY
So once upon a time Hamliet said she’d write a meta about ships in RWBY, and then arrived months later without Starbucks. 
The central tenet of alchemy is solve et coagula: dissolve, and then coagulate. The process (RWBY appears to be following Ripley’s 12 Gates) repeats, rinses, and repeats again and again throughout the steps, “each time at a more refined level.” The point of a chemical wedding is to reconcile opposites, which is something I touched on in my pseudo-quick meta here. Lyndy Abraham, the author of A Dictionary of Alchemical Imagery, describes the chemical wedding as: 
a crucial operation in the creation of the philosopher’s stone. The alchemists were ultimately concerned with the union of substances, the reconciliation of opposites.
Basically, it unites opposites (fire and water, air and earth, sun and moon, passive and active,  etc., etc., etc.) and then the opposites start to take on each other’s qualities, creating the “Rebis,” or a person both male and female.

The first chemical wedding is usually somewhat violent, primitive even, whereas the second one signifies the creation of the stone. However, characters can have more than two weddings, and chemical weddings do not inherently have to be romantic--Sam and Frodo aren’t, for example--but most often are, because it’s the most obvious way to show a union between separate people (the old adage “two become one” in marriage, for example). 
If we look at George Ripley’s 12 Gates, chemical weddings tend to be focused on in the fourth stage of conjunction (which I wrote about here) and in the ninth, fermentation (which is probably going to be in volume 10--maybe a little in volume 9, but traveling between worlds seems to be a hallmark of sublimation in fiction so I’m guessing we’re stuck there for the time being). But in a lengthy series spanning eight years and counting, there is going to be overlap. 
So let’s talk about chemical wedding imagery historically. It tends to involve dissolution (via water or fire--keep in mind metal was associated with fire in olden days, so stabbing with metal was considered liquid fire, or so it was believed to be by alchemists) and then coagulation (healing/coming together). 
Four of the five ships--two of whom are definitely happening, one of which I think is happening and one of which I think has a good chance--reference historical alchemical artwork and symbolism in key moments. (RWBY does reference alchemical artwork; see here and here.) So let’s dive in and examine potential chemical wedding allusions in RWBY:
Lie Ren/Nora Valkyrie (Renora)
Let’s start with the most obvious couple: Ren and Nora. Their first chemical wedding occurs when they are children. In alchemical art, birds are often used to show the volatility/primitiveness of a first chemical wedding:

The raven is replicated in the Nevermore which forms a similarly threatening pose over Ren and Nora when he unlocks his semblance to protect her, thus honoring his father and mother’s legacies.

You can even see earth (trees), water (river), fire, and air (the bird flying) in the scene as it pans out. After this, Ren and Nora become “Ren and Nora,” as Nora herself says in Volume 8. They’re inseparable, because they’re on their way to becoming one. However, unification doesn’t mean that they’re literally the same person; in stories like these, it’s more like they become better versions of themselves through growing towards each other and adopting each other’s traits (like Nora’s courage for Ren, and Ren’s caution for Nora). 
Their second, elevated chemical wedding is in the same place as their first, when in Volume 4 they return to the village and defeat the monster they were too young to defeat last time. This time, Nora is the one who protects Ren by telling him he could not sacrifice his life by pulling Ren back, in a reversal of his running to her in their first moment years ago.

Like the first, there’s water involved--Ren and Nora hide next to a river, watching as the Knuckelvee advances on them. I talked previously how I thought this looked like a possible allusion to this alchemical image (look at the moon symbol on the head of the aggressor):

The moon symbol actually shows up quite a bit in this scene, first when Nora and Ren discover the Nuckelvee is still alive in the cave:

While I am certain this is a chemical wedding, I’m not certain why the moon symbol is so prominent in this, though I do think it is possibly in reference to this image and how Nora and Ren are united now:

Yang Xiao Long/Blake Belladonna (Bumbleby)

Firstly, the alchemy image is somewhat of a creepy image, right? In this, Mercurius has united the two principles by beheading them (amputation is a Thing in alchemy), leaving them to putrefy and then coagulate.
Like the Nuckelvee for Nora and Ren, Blake and Yang have a somewhat antagonistic Mercurius who unites them: Adam Taurus. He doesn’t cut off their heads, but he does seriously injure Blake and cuts off Yang’s arm in a scene that is romantically charged (you have Blake’s possessive ex telling her he’ll target someone she loves and specifically chooses Yang).

While I have my issues with how Bumbleby is written, it’s hard to interpret that as anything other than him seeing Yang as a rival for Blake’s affection.
Their second chemical wedding also involves Adam. There’s no one direct image that seems to have inspired it, but it does take place in a place full of waterfalls (fountains and flowing water in general, like the ones in Nora and Ren’s village, are common elements of chemical weddings’ settings) and by the ocean (the “mercurial sea” is where the elements dissolve to make the Philosopher’s Stone, so it’s also a common hallmark for chemical weddings).
(To briefly address this: this is where my complaints about the writing pile in, because you can also make a damn strong case that Blake and Sun fighting on the ship to Menagerie is a chemical wedding, which it is, but I think it’s clear at this point that Bumbleby is endgame. Either both were written for a reason, like if they weren’t sure if they could do Bumbleby, or a narrative reason, in which case Black Sun should have been dealt with rather than hand-waved away, or they were just teasing, but baiting fans is never, ever good writing; it’s cheap. All that to say that while I think there’s a compelling case they were interested in pursuing Bumbleby from the start, Black Sun shippers have a right to feel tricked and not all criticism thereof is based in homophobia or a lack of narrative understanding, or even in a dislike of the ship.)

At the beginning of this scene, Adam makes it clear that this is a redo of their previous chemical wedding by reminding them of it:

Blake stabs Adam with a silver weapon; Yang with red. We have earth, air (clouds), water, and weapons as a stand-in for fire.
It’s still somewhat of a violent wedding, which makes me wonder if Bumbleby will have a third (and Renora as well). But it also parallels Renora in this: returning to a pivotal scene where they were traumatized, but this time being able to overcome it because they’ve become more like each other. Blake is in many ways Yang’s trauma stretching far beyond Beacon (Blake runs away, as does Raven, Yang’s mother who abandoned her), and likewise Yang for Blake (she’s hotheaded and holds grudges, like Adam). But Blake and Yang have been working on becoming better versions of themselves. 
At the end of this scene, they even exchange quasi-wedding vows (since Blake’s promise is to not abandon Yang):

And the artists drive home the point by drawing Blake’s hair far bushier than normal (more like Yang’s), and Yang’s far tamer than normal (like Blake’s).

Jaune Arc/Weiss Schnee (White Knight)
Weiss and Jaune have had one chemical wedding thus far (possibly two but not sure) and I didn’t ship them at all until I saw this scene. Like Bumbleby and Renora, they have an antagonistic Mercurius: Cinder.  
(This one I’ll be arguing a little bit about why I think it’s set up for romance as well.)
In this scene, Cinder directly compares Weiss to Pyrrha in regards to how Jaune feels about them (and we know Jaune and Pyrrha were romantic--you can also argue Cinder was an antagonistic Mercurius uniting Pyrrha and Jaune).

When Weiss screams, Cinder gets an idea and slides her gaze from Weiss to Jaune.

And then reenacts this:

As I also mentioned previously, Jaune then plays the role of the Prince to Weiss’s Snow White (which is an alchemical fairy tale). Like when Ren unlocks his aura to protect Nora, Jaune unlocks his to save Weiss. Weiss looks as if she is in a glass coffin that gets more and more golden, symbolic of refinement.

It’s also probably an allusion to this image of a chemical wedding presided over by Saturn (Mercury in this scene, since he’s there) and Death (Ruby and Qrow, who are also present in the scene with Jaune and Weiss). (For more on this image, see here.)

Weiss and Jaune also have some oppositional imagery and arcs: Weiss starts Beacon with a deep family legacy and an inherited semblance, she chooses to go to Beacon on her own and is the favored child (at first). Jaune too has a family legacy of warriors, but instead of feeling empowered because of this, he is insecure and  literally cheats his way into the school. He doesn’t have a semblance until season 5. After this incident, Weiss and Jaune spend some time recreationally together (seeing a movie in vol 7); Jaune becomes more confident as a leader, and Weiss continues her arc in becoming more sympathetic to those from less privileged backgrounds.
Arguably, what happened at the end of volume 8 could be seen as having some symbolism of a chemical wedding for Weiss and Jaune too, but I don’t think it actually is one since they weren’t focused on as characters enough (if this was intended to be the start of one, we’ll get something next season, I’d imagine). The only reason I’m mentioning it is because it does function as an inverse of the previous one, which is the case for Renora and Bumbleby’s first and second weddings too. Cinder again almost kills Weiss (she falls in the exact same position as in vol 5), but Jaune saves Weiss when he screams after killing Penny. Instead of saving Weiss by healing, he kills. There’s also some distinctive red and white imagery.

And then Winter arrives with a six-pointed star and birds before telling them to run together:

But again, I wouldn’t really call this one; it just has some imagery of one and fits a pattern, so I’m including it as a potential lead-in to an actual one in the void or later. 
Ruby Rose/Oscar Pine (Rosegarden)
Like with Weiss/Jaune, I’ll be arguing a little bit about why I think this one is likely to end up romantic, too (for example, Cinder most recently in volume 8 used Oscar to taunt Ruby in a callback to using Pyrrha and Weiss to taunt Jaune).
Also: oh look, finally a wedding that isn’t violent. They just... meet. Which is also normal for a chemical wedding but less dramatic.

(Fun fact: unless CRWBY came up with ship names which I highly, highly doubt, this is pure coincidence, but it’s a funny one: the art series this image is taken from is called Rosarium Philosophorum--which literally means “rose garden philosophy.”)
Let’s look at the scene where Ruby and Oscar meet for the first time. What makes this a chemical wedding is in part how obvious their markings are and the overall imagery is in the scene.
They are united by Qrow (who in addition to being named after a bird can literally transform into a bird):

Oscar asks about Ruby specifically (yes, I know because Qrow’s her uncle, but the writing is telling us to focus on his relationship with her):

And immediately notes/is in awe that she has silver eyes (i.e. the moon):

Qrow seems to realize he’s done something momentous in a way that almost doesn’t entirely work within the frame of the narrative (but he is drunk, so).

The scenery of this room is also telling. The table is literally an Emerald Table, the legendary foundation of alchemy itself. 
Once they sit and talk, behind Oscar are the elements of earth and water, which he represents, and also the moon, which while traditionally associated with earth and water, he does not (at least not as strongly as he’s associated with the sun/gold):

Similarly, behind Ruby we have the elements of fire and air (like, if you zoom in, they actually drew air), which she is marked as, and the sun, which again, she’s not as strongly associated with as she is with the moon:

In Splendor Solis, which CRWBY has referenced before, the Solar King does eventually end up grounded in the moon, and likewise the Lunar Queen in the sun:

Oscar and Ruby also do have oppositional arcs and roles: Ruby starts the series in the very first episode by being invited to Beacon two years early because of her leaping into action to stop Torchwick. She’s scolded for her recklessness, but immediately picked out as special because of her silver eyes. In contrast, Oscar is reluctant to leave his farm once Ozpin inhabits him; he refuses at first, and then once he does leave, is nervous and timid.
Anyways I wouldn’t be surprised if Qrow arrives in Vacuo with RWBYJ in tow and this time reunites Ruby with Oscar in an inverse. We’ll see. 
I do want to say that I also see potential for Emerald Sustrai/Mercury Black, in that they often act as one and share a theme song, but I haven’t seen any actual visual references to a chemical wedding for them... yet.

long post about the chinese dragons, rex lapis exuvia, and why the en translation left out the specification that it’s half qilin and half long (chinese dragon)
also spoilers i guess for guizhong and zhongli backstories?
I think maybe the game will expand/fix this later on when we get to know more about elemental life forms, but I just realized the EN translation never actually explicitly calls zhongli's exuvia/beast form a dragon, or even mentions that he was ever a dragon or anything. Which is odd, because they canonically mention dvalin and azhdaha being dragons. So maybe EN the game is trying to go with the consistent and European version where "dragons are big, powerful and usually scary unless special humans help them"? (more about that in the third paragraph.)
To be fair, you don't even need to say zhongli's most recent exuvia was half dragon for virtually everyone on the planet to recognize that it was. Or more specifically, a chinese dragon. Even if you don't know a lot about chinese history and culture, there's a very high chance you can still recognize a lóng (in mandarin), or chinese dragon. So maybe that's why didn't mention it. Because they knew the audience would already know (but there's also problems with this line of rationalization as well, which I will also get to). But if that's the case, why did they already go ahead and change the mandarin text of Ivanovich who specifically says the exuvia is half qilin and half dragon? In english they only say that it's "a combination of two legendary creatures of liyue" or something like that. It never specifies which ones (if you talk to Ivanovich after you complete the rite of descension quest you don't get that dialogue anymore.)
Like, we're already going to be introduced to qilins via Ganyu's backstory, and we already know dragons exist in genshin. It wouldn't have been confusing at all to keep the specification, and arguably it's more confusing to go without it because I think "his beast form is a combo of two super legendary liyue creatures" is kind of a big deal lore-wise. In fact, it wouldn't even confuse people who are most used to knowing dragons as the more modern European version (large and mean and destructive) because lore-wise you could easily attribute zhongli's gentler side to his qilin side (which are still explained even in EN to be very gentle creatures via ganyu's story quest). Even if you play the game only in mandarin this is what the game seems to do. I know that he technically took on a lot of forms and that the lore states that not even the Exuvia might be his original/"true" form, but still. It's the only beast form we've seen him in and it is the most fitting, so the audience will subconsciously pick it up as his "main" beast form.
Also this is a very nitpicky thing with the fandom but TECHNICALLY from what I've seen in chinese media lóng are not depicted fully as "super soft innocent uwu" creatures like I've noticed some people saying, they can still be stern and serious, they're just historically/culturally more wise, graceful, benevolent, protective/leadership deities compared to modern english dragons. I don't think it's actually THAT big of a deal or insulting of however you depict a chinese dragon, some variations just may seem more unusual or weird to asian people (and it also intersects with conversations about masculinity in america and europe vs masculinity in east asia) and then for the case of zhongli some depictions are just like. arguably ooc. ALSO I could write paragraphs about how even in some european countries dragons were revered too! Especially in Celtic Ireland.
Now, as I mentioned before the "well the game doesnt need to say zhongli is a lóng since virtually everyone can recognize one" is a faulty argument because his exuvia is actually very apparent to be a combo and not fully lóng; the problem is most people just aren't able to tell because more people are familiar with them and not qilin. The exuvia is shorter than most traditional dragons, has this little pointy horn thing? in the middle of the forehead which you see more on qilins (at least in more historical, non-genshin depictions), and the biggest indicator I think, is that it's a LOT more fluffy than lóng (like the large unevenly-sized crests on his back, his tail, and around his head).
I know a lot of people say that the En translation team made Zhongli too strict/mean for a chinese lóng (they're mainly talking about Keith Silverstein and how they directed his voicelines) and I do agree a bit but to me I would have to argue that if anything, the EN writing team also leaned too much into zhongli's lóng/serious side and kind of disregarded his qilin/polite side. And I wonder if this is because they thought chinese dragons were more easily digestable and recognizable to most people who weren't chinese? Either way it sucks they left that lore bit out because having him be a combination makes zhongli more interesting and less stereotypical. like oh yes liyue is china of course the archon/leader has to be a serious male full chinese dragon. duh. Which is fine and fitting! but just slightly boring at this point. Also considering that zhongli has taken on several forms and the way daoist illuminated immortals (adepti) work, he could've even been born a full qilin, a tiger, a human, a fucking panda. who knows.
Personally I think zhongli's half long half lin form is his most common form and he took it up when guizhong died, which was when he became like "okay maybe I should start interacting with my people and learn about them if I'm going to be the sole leader of them now. [and also because guizhong wanted him to] but also I need to make sure I can still be powerful to protect them" and "I need to take up an appropriate form so humans respect/rever me and don't freak out." (I definitely don’t think full lóng dragon was his original form.)

special operations; a line in the sand
Somehow, while at work, I got a brain worm to talk about this particular video game. It’s not one I’ve actually played, but it is one I’ve watched a full playthrough of, so I pretty much got the gist.

It’s also a game where the least interesting thing about it is actually playing it, so if anything, I think I’ve got the superior experience. It’s very much the product of its times, for all the good it takes of that, and all the bad it takes from that as well- and it’s pretty clearly doing each and every one of those things deliberately. With the genre it inhabits and centres around having been somewhat moved on from in the near-decade since its release, despite the desperate flailings of the CoD and Battlefield franchises, it’s become a bit of a relic of its era, and one I’d like to break down.
Heavy spoilers, of course.
Spec Ops: The Line released in 2012. And it was one of many, many military-themed shooters of its day- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was in its heyday with Black Ops II on the horizon, Battlefield 3 was similarly popular, and every single imitator on the planet was coming out all at once. Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Just Cause 2, Red Faction: Armageddon, Max Payne 3, Army of Two… arguably even the grittier shooters in the Sci-Fi genre like Gears of War 3 count towards this massive, ballooning zeitgeist of an era of gaming. There’s a lot of things these games have in common- an emphasis on “realistic” or “modern” equipment and settings (except the scifi ones), a general dull, muddied visual tone, a lot of recurring gameplay design elements such as regenerating health and cover mechanics, and an overall glorification of war and violence pushed by the genre’s ubiquity in gaming.

It was unto this era that Spec Ops: The Line was birthed. From outside appearances, the game was all of these combined- the gameplay is a pretty bog-standard third-person cover-shooter affair, the game is set in the Middle East with US soldiers as the focus, and the look and feel of the game is no different to anything else that was releasing around the same time. Hell, the multiplayer- very much tacked-on, rushed, and studio-demanded- could pretty much entirely be dismissed as “those other games, but worse” which isn’t a great selling point in a crowded market. But of course, the multiplayer is not the selling point.
What Spec Ops: The Line does is take those mechanics and examine them with a different perspective, as a means of analyzing what makes these games tick, and what the horrors of war that would go unnoticed as part of a different game would look more like were the whole thing taken seriously. The game does not glorify violence- rather it takes what is used to glorify violence and presents this in a greater context.

The developers have stated that Spec Ops: The Line is about choice, despite the game essentially having little means of enacting a moral choice in the game. There are a few instances- e.g., (spoilers I guess) one of your two squadmates near the end of the game gets lynched by a mob, who are taunting you…do you shoot them in revenge or not? Executing civilians is obviously a war crime, but war crimes are this game’s bread and butter, and if you don’t do it, then you get derided by them as they throw rocks at you while you move through the area.
Hell, in the game’s most infamous scene, you are required to commit multiple war crimes in a row to proceed. You find evidence of enemy forces using white phosphorous shells- a horrific weapon that painfully burns its victims alive with an unforgiving chemical fire- you see the aftermath of this attack, and the characters respond with the appropriate amount of discomfort. And then, much later on, you’re presented with an area you have to cross filled with too many enemies to reasonably make it past…and a mortar, loaded with white phosphorous shells.

If you want to progress through the game, you must use these shells. You must look down that thermal scope, see Walker’s face reflected back at you, and pull the trigger at those unidentified targets (not identifying targets is a war crime also). And because you have to clear the area entirely to proceed, you must fire on the shipping container filled with civilians (and that’s why), killing them all horribly in the process. An act which the game directly calls the player out for doing. If I have one major criticism for this game, it is that the intended, developer-mandated “moral option” is simply to stop playing.
As Walker’s single-mindedness is absolute, you must progress, even as it’s more and more clear that you are very much not operating according to mission parameters. The game explicitly states that the team is just there to make contact and figure out what’s going on in the ruined Dubai, but Walker insists they must keep moving to various objectives, dragging the player along like any other shooter story despite that very much not being what they’re here to do. And as his crimes grow longer and more vicious, and his mind gets more affected by the surroundings, by what he’s done, and by the hallucinations confusing every single thing he does.

I don’t think I've ever seen a game gaslight the player quite like Spec Ops does. Both in story and in gameplay, Walker’s hallucinations are presented to the player to conflict everything being seen- from conversations that his teammates don’t seem to hear, to combat in a ruined mall where soldiers become mannequins and vice versa. Even subtle details, like one I only found in research- whenever Walker is cut off from his squadmates, his pistol suddenly becomes a Desert Eagle- the true hand-cannon of an action hero, mocking the one-man army archetype portrayed in so many games.
It is, of course, revealed in eventuality that Walker is in fact the villain the whole time. His hallucinations leading him to massacre his fellow Americans who were only acting in self-defence, to help a rogue CIA operative destroy the last water supply in the ravaged city, and to hear a villain over a radio that is in reality a corpse and broken plastic. The way the game presents it is that not just Walker, but the player is the villain- a direct line from the hallucinatory Colonel Konrad pointing out that the violence could have been avoided if “you just stopped”- again, stop playing and it’ll be okay. Stop playing this game, this genre of game, stop glorifying war and confront the reality of this zeitgeist head on.

Deconstruction is not a common thing in triple-A games which I’d argue Spec Ops: The Line counts as- it was published by 2K not long before they also put out Borderlands 2 and not long after Civilisation V and Bioshock 2 (…and also Duke Nukem Forever). It’s an inherently counter-intuitive type of product when the goal is to make money, as the very premise relies on players to understand and reflect on concepts and tropes of the genres they experience. But I think that’s what makes Spec Ops: The Line all that much more special- it essentially weaponises the language of military shooters in order to make a statement that the fantasies they portray are as poisonous as the crimes they fail to discuss. “thing bad” is never an especially poignant stance, but the piece does speak beyond that, and even as the genre it critiques fades more and more into the past, the ponts behind it are still relevant. We still have CoD and Battlefield, after all, even if their specific focus has shifted away from “modern American military fighting terrorists and the like in far/middle eastern or former soviet places”.
In short. Is Spec Ops: The Line fun? No. Is it a good game? Arguably, not really. But is it a valuable piece of art? I’d say yes.

Penumbra Podcast fan Theory
I have a theory about how this season is going to end and where the Junoverse is headed. None of this is certain, it’s all just theory. This isn’t about Nureyev’s debts though, I have genuinely no idea what’s going on with that boi but he worries me lots. I love him, and can’t figure him out. This is about the other class X radical. 
SPOILERS FOR JUNO STEEL AND WHAT LIES BEYOND PART 2
tl;dr  Jet saw Nureyev/Ransom fly away with the Ruby 7. The Ruby 7 sent the distress signal. The Ruby 7 is a sentient ai. The Ruby 7 is the other class X radical.
1. Jet saw Nureyev/Ransom fly away with the Ruby 7.
There was a line from Jet that stuck out to me right away in What Lies Beyond part 2. At the very beginning of his interrogation jet says "I do not think. I know. There is nothing on this ship that they want." He also later says "There is nothing on this ship that they want. That is final". I do put more stock in the first than the second quote because by the second one he is playing along with Juno's plan and intentionally being angry. I have looked through the scripts and I don't think we're ever told where Jet is being held (lmk if I'm wrong) but for my theory to work he is somewhere with a window and/or he saw things before being put in a "cell" at all.
Jet is a straightforward guy and went into that interrogation with a plan. He had time to think about what he wanted to say to Juno and what he said was "I do not think. I know." I take this to mean she really does know. He knows that Ransom, who dark matters is looking for, is not on the ship. He knows that the Ruby 7, who he believes dark matters is looking for (I'll get to this later), is not on the ship. 
While my Ruby 7 theory is a bit more of a long shot, I REALLY think Jet saw Ransom escape. He says in no uncertain terms that he KNOWS that there isn’t anything that Dark Matters is looking for. Even if we make an assumption that Jet thinks they’re only looking for one 
2. The Ruby 7 sent the distress signal
So I’ve thought this might be true since my second listen through the episode. It was a bit of a wild guess at first, but the more I think about it the more I buckle down on it. It lines up in a lot of ways where nothing else I can think of does. This whole argument does assume that Sasha and Dark Matters didn’t just fabricate the distress signal, but given her distaste for agent G (god rest her soul), I think the signal was real. 
When trying to decide who could have sent the signal we can immediately rule out literally every person in the carte blanche family. Buddy and Juno do a good job of explaining to us why each one of them couldn’t be it. 
Buddy was dying (plus we have the added bonus of her monologue and knowing what she was doing)
Juno, Vespa, and Ransom were in sight of each other and in the way of EMP waves
Rita’s comms were knocked out by the EMP waves
Jet was fixing the Ruby 7 and was right next to the EMP waves. He was also pretty busy trying to keep buddy from allowing herself to be killed
All of these things considered, we can also just assume that no one on this ship would rat them out. The only possible defection is Ransom, but despite not knowing what his motives are, I don’t think he ratted them out to Dark Matters. 
The only thing with the sentience to call out would be the Ruby (I’ll provide evidence for its sentience in a moment). I don’t know why it would reach out to Dark Matters specifically, but maybe it was just reaching out to anyone with a distress call. I don’t know how space distress calls work, but Sasha did need to specify that the call didn’t come from the Carte Blanche which means vehicles may have the power to send out a distress call. 
We know from Sasha and Juno’s conversation that the distress call was sent out 4 times in 2 hours. In the episode we see 3 major EMP blasts: The one between episodes, the one when Vespa and Ransom start arguing and Buddy can’t communicate, and the one Buddy barely avoids by getting into the safe room. It isn’t unreasonable to presume there was a 4th EMP wave that occurred after Buddy was safe and sound but before the entire team made it back safely. 4 distress signals for 4 emp waves. If the Ruby 7 is the one sending these, then this math makes sense.
In The Heart of it all Part 2 Jet says to Buddy “Even an EMP so direct couldn’t deactivate its computer mind for a moment - though it is still bitter about its engines.” This means the Ruby may have been scared about its engines dying and therefore it sent out a distress signal. 
None of this is provable at this point, but I also haven’t found any evidence to the contrary. If nothing following this is true, I still think this may be true. 
3. The Ruby 7 is a sentient AI
It is at this point that I would like to acknowledge that I am using it/its as pronouns for the Ruby 7. This is how the car has been referred to in the show up until this point and so it is how I will be referring to it from here on out. If any of this pans out and the Ruby 7 uses different pronouns or signifiers in future episodes I will refer to it differently. 
Before I give the reasons I think the Ruby 7 itself is sentient, I want to talk about why I think it’s plausible that Kevin and Sophie would take the story in this direction. The reason is pretty simple, they’ve told us they’d be willing to. Here is a clip of Kevin and Sophie in the Season 1 Q&A.

So not only does this clip make it clear that Kevin has wanted robots in some form from the start, it shows that Sophie is open to the idea. We also hear them talk about how big of a deal it would be to introduce elements like this into the story. I would consider all of this setup as treating the concept of AI with the respect and time it deserves. We also know how much Kevin loves the Ruby 7 so making the car a main character would absolutely be within the realm of possibilities. The Ruby 7 is arguably the 7th member of their crew with or without sentience. 
Now to discuss the proof of the sentience of the Ruby 7. There’s a lot of evidence for this. The car has always been sassy and had a personality, but there are several moments that point to more than this. 
In the very beginning of part 1 of Tools of Rust, we see Jet directly mull over the sentience of the Ruby 7. 
The Ruby 7’s many background calculations make it more like a horse. It can be controlled, but only insofar as it wants to be controlled. (HE SHAKES HIS HEAD AND SNORTS, DISMISSING HIMSELF) “Wants to.” This car can make you believe in ghosts, too — a spirit in the machine. But the Ruby 7, whatever the force of its calculations, cannot want and cannot think; it can only behave like it does. ~from Tools of Rust Script released to 10$ Patreon supporters
This gives some of the base backgrounds into how Jet thinks about the car he is closest to. In this episode he refers to the ruby as “a wild horse, I must break it in.” The catalyst for this episode occurs while Jet is breaking down the tractor shield generator because when driving the Ruby 7 “Manuevers have not responded as they should.” There are of course reasons for these things that are not sentience. Jet himself does not think the car is sentient at the beginning of this episode. We also know that his view of the car is changing throughout his arc of this season. In its most recent appearance, we see the Ruby at its most sentient. Two distinct moments come to mind in regards to this. 
First, in part one as they are discussing their plan after Rita deploys the Book: 
JET:  We will be on our own — even the Ruby 7 will temporarily shut down. RUBY 7: (PETTY/ANNOYED BEEPS) BUDDY: … Come again? JET: The Ruby insists that it will not shut down. It is incorrect. RUBY 7: (REALLY ANNOYED BEEPS) JET: The Ruby says that I should not tell it what it can and cannot do. VESPA: Really built some sass into that thing, huh? NUREYEV: Is it just me, or… have responses like this become more common from our mysterious vehicle? VESPA: I swear its voice changed, too. BUDDY: Then we’ll allow the car its moody teenage years, I think; after all this is over I’ll buy it an industrial supply of eyeliner and posters of sad young men. ~ From The Heart of it All part 1 script released to 10$ Patreon supporters
Here several characters are remarking upon the increasing sentience of the Ruby 7. In part 2 of this episode, we see further evidence that the crew, especially Jet, has noticed changes in the Ruby which make it seem more and more sentient. 
BUDDY: Singing and theoretical mathematics? Is there anything that car can't do? JET: Increasingly I worry that there is not. Even an EMP so direct couldn’t deactivate its computer mind for a moment — though it is still bitter about its engines. (HE ACTUALLY IS WORRIED ABOUT WHAT THE HELL THE RUBY 7 IS, BUT NOW ISN’T THE TIME FOR THAT) But in this moment I am far more worried by.... ~ From Heart of it All part 2 script for 10$ Patreon Supporters
Here it is clear that not only does Jet sound concerned about the Ruby 7, but Kevin’s direction shows that Jet is genuinely unsure of the Ruby. Not just that he doesn’t know what the Ruby 7 is doing, but that he doesn’t know what the Ruby 7 is. 
Now that I’ve shown all of the evidence I have I’m going to extrapolate some of this to draw a line from this evidence to my theory in part 1. 
Jet knows something is up with the Ruby 7. He has seen Nureyev leave the carte blanche in the Ruby 7 and therefore knows the car is not on the ship. As the delivery notes say “now isn’t the time for that”. What does Jet have while in his “cell” but time? He spends part of his imprisonment sitting and thinking about the Ruby 7. He knows that Dark Matters could have easily found the cure mother prime so he assumes there is something else they are looking for. He realizes that his car is sentient. He realizes that they are looking for 2 main things, Ransom and the Ruby 7. He saw both of these leave. He says "I do not think. I know. There is nothing on this ship that they want."
For this to work, the Ruby 7 needs to be classified as a Class X radical, this is a tall order, but I think the Ruby 7 meets the criteria. 
 4. The Ruby 7 is the other class X radical
1st of all, look at that green car? That car is SO rad. 
Jokes aside, there are 2 main criteria I’m using to determine that the Ruby 7 could be the class X radical Dark Matters is looking for. First, is it literally possible that this is what Dark Matters is looking for? Does it fit any descriptors Director Wire gives us during her interview with Juno? Second, does it fit the definition of a class X radical? 
In answer to the first question, we consider what Dark Matters is searching for. We know that they know it’s class X, but not much else. In fact, Sasha suggests that Juno may know more than her about the radical because he’s been living with it. This gives the impression that they might not really know what they’re looking for. My theory here is they know that they are looking for a sentient robot, but they don’t know it’s a car. This explains why they know what they need to about its threats but not much else. It may also explain why some of the agents were looking in drawers. If they were not looking for Nureyev (cause like Buddy said, they should know he’s not inches tall) then perhaps they were looking for a sentient robot. Unless I’m misremembering something, I think this is all we really get in terms of information on what the second radical is. Sasha doesn’t give Juno much information despite giving him everything she can about the cure mother prime.
In answer to the second question, we look toward the definition Sasha gives Juno for a radical: “any person or object with the potential to cause significant change to civilized human life as we know it”. AI with sentience fits this definition. Even if you don’t think it does, the piece from the season 1 Q&A shows that Sophie thinks it does. They talk about the care that would need to be in place in order to introduce robots, ai, or aliens. Care is needed because any one of these three things would drastically change the galaxy as they know it. 
 I don’t really have any clever way to end this other than saying all of this could be wrong. I could be completely off and there are probably other explanations for everything I’ve described, but I actually feel pretty confident on this. It started off as a random thought and the more I’ve sat on it the more evidence I’ve collected. Whether this comes to fruition or not I hope you enjoyed reading my theory!

Matagi in yakuza 5 !
I was doing some research and it looks like the hunting village saejima visits in y5 is a Matagi village. Idk how much of this would be obvious to japanese fans, but it wasn’t at all obvious to me so im just gonna share my findings here in the hopes that they may be interesting or useful to someone else who was ignorant of this cultural context. I do think identifying the hunting village as Matagi gives a new angle of understanding to some elements of the mountain segment of the game.
Disclaimers: what ive written here is just based on a few articles I read. They weren’t even detailed articles. I am by no means an expert on the Matagi, and I would love to hear any input from people who know more than i do ! Now Read On
So the Matagi are a traditional northern hunting culture (perhaps indigenous Ainu in origin) who emphasize maintaining ecological balance and holding respect for life. They use every piece of the animal out of gratitude for the animal’s sacrifice. All of this matches perfectly with what Okudera says about hunting. he doesn’t emphasize the overtly spiritual aspects of Matagi culture, but these spiritual aspects are reflected in the mountain gods that Saejima interacts with and also arguably in the presence of Yama-oroshi as a kind of supernatural manifestation of the hunters’ crimes in upsetting balance on the mountain. (side-note: if anyone can offer insight into the etymology of the name yama-oroshi  “ヤマオロシ” id be interested to hear it, as all I could find out was something about graters and something about management…)
(A digression on okudera: as I recall the game does not specify his origins: he might have originally come from a hunting village and reconnected with his culture after escaping from jail, or more likely he is just appropriating the culture of the village lol. either way though I think we are warranted in reading Okudera as the village’s appropriate representative of the traditional hunting culture, given that he is the mouthpiece for the above hunting ethos, one which perfectly matches with the Matagi in the sources I looked at. more on this later.)
Additional evidence for the villagers as being Matagi: Mrs Nishina explicitly calls the villagers’ way of life “traditional,” contrasting it to recreational hunting. now some of the Matagi common game don’t match with the game available in the game (see what I did there??). For instance there is no japanese serow, but this makes sense given that hunting the serow has been banned and it would be pretty icky and weird to have a video game incentivize the killing of a specially protected animal. But their culture features a focus on – you guessed it – bears. The Matagi also mostly wear contemporary (vs traditional) clothing, so the village’s fairly modern aesthetic by no means precludes their being Matagi. finally, reading the village as a Matagi village also fits with what the villagers say about their being permitted to hunt by special license after regular sport hunting was made illegal, since the Matagi hunt by permit. So thought I was on the right track with identifying the village as Matagi, then I saw this picture:

Recognize the outfits? Look at the crossed ropes in the front holding up a lil fur cape/vest thing. It’s a very distinctive visual feature, I would go so far as to say unmistakable. Okudera #confirmed for Matagi.

(incidentally I think okudera’s fur thing might be serow fur, the serow being an animal which it is now banned to hunt even for the Matagi)
Ok now so what about it? The village being a Matagi village accounts for a few textual features that I found confusing. For instance it explains what Saejima says about the villagers “selling out” by accepting outsiders’ commissions for prize game. I was confused by this comment bc I think of people as only “selling out” if they know they are doing something bad, while the villagers didn’t seem to know that they would tip the ecological balance on the mountain. But in light of the Matagi culture it makes sense that hunting on commission would be a violation of their standards: hunting is permissible only for subsistence purposes. ‘subsistence’ doesn’t mean you can only consume/use animals and not sell them, but it does mean that you shouldnt hunt because it’s lucrative or in order to maintain a lavish lifestyle. Hunting is only appropriate to sustain a simple lifestyle. So by cashing in on the hunting boom prior to the enactment of the new hunting regulations, the villagers violated Matagi values whether or not they knew that their actions would do tangible harm to the mountain ecosystem.
(Of course this creates a huge ludonarrative dissonance when we think about HOW MANY animals saejima kills, in my case to sell the pelts and, uh, hoard the meat forever basically. But ludonarrative dissonance doesn’t admit of literary analysis so lets move on)
Reading the hunters as Matagi also adds new tragic depth to the attack of Yama-Oroshi and its consequences. When Mrs Nishina talks about how all the villagers used to help each other out, but don’t anymore since suffering starvation after the attack, shes describing more than just a breakdown of norms - shes describing an actual cultural crisis, and the dissolution of hundreds of years of tradition. The traditional Matagi collectivism apparently began to decline after guns replaced spears, obviating the need for group hunting. But what Mrs Nishina says points out that Yama-Oroshi’s attack sounded something like the final death knell for Matagi collectivist traditions in their village. Mrs Nishina even says explicitly that “our entire way of life [was at risk of being] lost to the ages.” :O :(
I have one last vague thought, which is related to Okudera’s outsider status. Whether or not he is ethnically (?) Matagi, he clearly did not spend any or most of his life following a Matagi lifestyle. Yet he seems to be the strongest adherent of Matagi traditions. Specifically okudera exemplifies the Matagi principle of mutual aid (though interestingly we mostly see him exercise it in helping outsiders rather than the other villagers, and it also does turn out that the villagers are looking after okudera more than initially appears…). Mr nishina also says that Okudera knows the mountain and travels quickly the best out of all the villagers, and that okudera reminded them all “how a hunter should live.” And sakurai: “okudera-san is truer to the spirit of the hunt than any of us native villagers.” Overall okudera, an outsider, is the authoritative representative of the Matagi ethos, a fact which receives a powerful visual representation in his traditional hunting attire. i wonder what this could mean thematically… something about the power of cultural sharing to help isolated individuals, who then if they are truly dedicated can help to revitalize a culture in turn ? but okudera himself attributes his understanding of the way of the hunter to the tutelage of the village and the mountain…

Dear Albus,
I hope this letter finds you well.  I know these are trying and troubling times, both here and in Britain, and part of me hesitates to ask this of you for exactly that reason. But, as ever, circumstances leave us with few viable options.
News of what happened to Amity Park this Spring has spread far and wide at this point, so I won’t waste your time repeating what you already know.  What is not common knowledge, however, is that after the dust settled, the Aurors assigned to the case encountered several irregularities, not the least of which was a disturbingly high number of completely untrained young witches and wizards.  
Once news of them gets out, I have no doubt the official line will be that they simply fell through the cracks, that, unfortunately, our spells for finding young magically-gifted persons are imperfect, that the nature of Amity Park obscured them from view.  This, I fear, is a lie.  
I have no proof, but I believe they were deliberately removed from MACUSA files on account of their heritage.  Albus, they are descended from Scourers.  
Perhaps that should be obvious, perhaps you had already guessed, considering the so-called reasoning behind the attack on Amity Park, the ideals those murderers professed, but I want to make myself and my own reasoning clear.  Though it shames me deeply to say it, those children will not be safe at Ilvermorny, nor, I believe, will they be at any other school on this continent.  For all the time that has passed, the Barebones Incident and its repercussions are too fresh in the minds of the people.  
There are seven of them.  Well, seven that are of concern to me.  The others have found or are seeking alternate arrangements.  They have been staying at the school, for the time being.  My colleagues and I have been attempting to give them a good grounding in magical basics. They would not come to you without foundations.
Albus, I am begging you, accept these students into Hogwarts.  I know this is a poor time.  I have heard rumors, horrible, horrible rumors, about what is happening in Britain, about what happened at Hogwarts last year, but I fear for these children’s future, for their spirits, should they be forced into a place where they will be hated simply because of who their ancestors were.  
I know that even in Hogwarts they would be unable to escape that, but it would be less.  Britain does not have the same history with Scourers that we do.  More, for some of them, they would not be forced to walk in the same halls as the kin of their parents’ murderers.
I will understand if you refuse, but I am relying on your compassion.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore looked down at the letter from his old friend and colleague and sighed, his heart heavy. Agilbert was not a member of the Order of the Phoenix.  Albus knew more about the situation in Amity Park than Agilbert assumed and likely was aware of things that Agilbert himself was not.  
For example, while the bulk of the group that had devastated and decimated Amity Park were indeed Magical Separatists and those looking for generations-late revenge on Scourers, their core leadership included American Death Eaters.  
He was also aware of the children Agilbert had mentioned.  Most of the truly astonishing number of magically inclined children and adults in Amity Park had chosen to find private tutors, go through correspondence or summer courses, or attend one of several small schools in North America that had quickly shuffled to make accommodations for them, on the condition that they hide their origins.  
The seven mentioned…  Well.  They didn’t really have those options.  Either their names were too infamous, or they had no one to stay with while they puzzled through correspondence courses.  Or both.
And the names.  Even here, some of them were well known.
Albus could understand why Agilbert had asked for his help.
But was it responsible to drag these children here while Voldemort was lurking in the shadows, building up his power base once again? To offer them safety he could not give?
For those students already attending Hogwarts, it was one thing, they were already involved, simply by virtue of where they were born and where they lived.  But those seven, in America, they would be—
Well.  Not safe, perhaps, not with their parents killed and their home ravaged by hostile magic. But… farther away from the direct line of fire.  
But would they be?  Beyond simply spreading fear and hate, was there another reason for the attack on Amity Park?
Albus heaved another sigh.  
At times he enjoyed making decisions like this.  Enjoyed power, knowledge, experience, those things people tended to mistake for wisdom, even though he had made more mistakes than anyone else he knew, and all the privileges and responsibilities that came with it, all the control over other peoples’ lives.  This was a failing, a flaw, he knew, and time and time again it had come back to bite him.  Karmic vengeance for being an old man who kept too many secrets.  
But times like these…  In times like these, he despised the choices he was forced to make.  
“What troubles you, Albus?  I can hear you sighing from the other room.”
Albus did not flinch or startle at the ghost’s approach and gently chiding tone.  He looked up and smiled thinly at his former and present colleague.  It seemed Cuthbert was having a good day.  It was a pity so few students saw him at his best, and regarded his lessons as utterly boring, but Albus could never find the heart to replace him.  Nor, sadly, the budget.  Damn the board of directors.
In answer, Albus turned the letter to face him.  Cuthbert Binns was not a member of the Order, either, but he, like every other member of the Hogwarts staff, had been informed of what had transpired at the end of the Tri-Wizard Tournament.  He would understand Albus’s dilemma.  
“Amity Park?” murmured Cuthbert, tapping the second paragraph.  “That sounds… familiar.  That—” Cuthbert broke off.  
If Albus had not spent significant portions of his life surrounded by ghosts, he would not have caught the subtle change in Cuthbert’s silvery complexion.  
“Perhaps you heard about the tragedy that happened there recently.”  Which would be a first, even alive, Cuthbert had never really cared about anything that happened more recently than a hundred years ago, but not impossible.
“Tragedy?  No.” Cuthbert shook his head.  “Amity Park it’s—It is…”  He trailed off, looking down at the letter, disturbed.  “Albus, I have known you for many years.  You have been here for many years, with all us ghosts, and…  You know there are things the dead do not speak of to the living.”
Albus did know.  “Are you saying Amity Park is related to one of those things?”  Could this be another attempt on Voldemort’s part to defeat death? His suspicion regarding horcruxes was bad enough, what that could mean for Harry…  But if that man had yet another way to stave off death…
Cuthbert dithered, and Albus wished fiercely that he could trust him enough to tell him about the Order, about Voldemort’s plans, to impress upon him how important this was, how vital that Albus know.  
But he couldn’t.  It would just take one bad day, and one misplaced question from a student related to someone unfortunate, and everything would come tumbling down.  
No.  Albus could not push him.  
“I—I must go,” said Cuthbert, halfway through the wall. “I have to look into something. I’ll be back before you know it.”
He was not.

Albus had still not made a decision on Agilbert’s letter the next night.  He had consulted Minerva, Severus, and the other teachers who were also in the Order on the matter, and had distracted himself with other, arguably more important, matters.  
(The eyes on Number Four Privet Drive, the movements in and out of the Malfoy residence, the horribly dangerous games Severus was playing, the master schedule for the next school year, the still-empty Defense Against the Dark Arts post, extra protections on Hogwarts’ boundaries, how to keep the Order safe…)
But he shouldn’t put something like this off for much longer.
It would be much easier to deny Agilbert’s request.  As tragic as the seven students’ circumstances were, they weren’t his responsibility, and he had so many.  
Would you feel the same if the attackers had been Gellert’s people?

Albus closed his eyes and forced the tiny and vicious voice away, out of his mind.
“Sir Nicholas wants to speak to you,” said one of the portraits.  
Surprised, Albus turned his head to face the image of his predecessor.  “Of course. Could you tell him he can come in?”
A few minutes later, the Gryffindor ghost floated through the wall.  “Hello, Albus,” he said, the outlines of his figure crisper than they usually were, and continued before Albus could greet him, “I am sorry to interrupt you like this, but is it true?  Seven students from Amity Park?”
“Cuthbert told you?”
“He told all of us,” said Sir Nicholas, shrugging in a way that made his head roll unsettlingly.  “You should accept them.”
Albus raised his eyebrows.  
“There is a certain element of risk involved,” the ghost’s voice was careful, “but if they come to Hogwarts, there is a possibility that you may gain a powerful ally, and that…”  Here, Sir Nicholas hesitated.  “Certain ancient wrongs might be righted.”
“I suppose it is that second the ghosts are interested in?” asked Albus, both curious and, despite himself, amused.  
Sir Nicholas gave him a gentle smile.  “Do not imagine that we are careless of your struggles, Albus, but many of us were long dead before you were born.  We care, but… sometimes the picture in front of our eyes is not the same as the one before yours.”
That was reasonable.  
However.
“Can you give me any more detail?” asked Albus, hopefully.
“I’m afraid not,” said the ghost, drifting backwards.

The next letter from Agilbert was much thicker and contained the records of seven new Hogwarts students.

The wand turning in his fingers was made of pear wood.  Not that Danny could tell, just by looking, but the wandmaker, who had accompanied her wares to Ilvermorny, had been very talkative, even when Danny had… not.  
Pear wood, cut from a tree that had grown up through a chain-link fence on the wandmaker’s property.  She had meant to cut it out, she said, but by the time she had gotten around to doing so, there had been bowtruckles in it, and she wasn’t about to cut down a good wand wood tree.
Danny still wasn’t entirely sure what bowtruckles were to be honest.  
The wood of the wand was normal.  The core, apparently, was not.  It was hair from a magical creature, which most wand cores were, but the wandmaker had cheerfully admitted to having no idea what the hair was from. It had shown up in her workshop one day, in a little box, black and white, in neat little bundles.  
Danny had suspicions about where it had come from.  
Suspicions that had been exacerbated by the fact that both Sam and Tucker had been ‘chosen’ by wands with the same core.  
Anyway, Danny had liked the wandmaker, even if he thought she was a bit weird, for using components that just showed up out of nowhere in her work.  
(She reminded him a bit of Mom.)
Danny wasn’t sure why he was thinking of her.  It had been months since then.  But he was feeling lonely, even though his friends were just in the next room, and Jazz was here, and maybe she was the closest he would let his mind get to…
To…
“If you keep doing that,” said Jazz, “you’re going to put your eye out.”  
Danny glanced over at her.  There was an east-facing window behind her, and the sun was shining through her shoulder, lighting her up like stained glass.  
“If they catch you in color, they’re going to have questions.”
Jazz rolled her golden eyes, but the color drained out of her, leaving her ‘properly’ silver and gray.  “If they actually listened, instead of dismissing everything weird in Amity as untrained magic acting up, then they wouldn’t need to have questions.”
“Yeah, but they didn’t, and I don’t think they’re going to. So, considering what we have to do…”
“We need all our advantages.  You don’t have to tell me again,” said Jazz.  She pulled a face.  “Well, you did, actually, I guess.  I’m sorry about that.”
“It’s fine,” muttered Danny.  “You only died a couple months ago.  It takes time to recalibrate.”
“Mm,” said Jazz, sticking her head through the windowpanes and looking down.  She pulled back.  “Your escort’s coming up.”
“Oh?  Yeah?”
“Or at least someone.  It’s hard to tell who, what with the hats and all…”
It was time to go, then.  Danny gathered his things and joined the others in the common area.

Hours later, as the sun was setting, nine Americans stepped out of a fireplace in the Ministry of Magic.  Seven were students.  One was a very haggard chaperon.  The last was a ghost whom aurors and representatives from the Department of Spectral Affairs hadn’t quite been able to dissuade from haunting her brother.  
Such was life.  Such was death.  
“Alright, kids,” said the chaperon, chivying them towards a central area.  “We just have to go through customs, and then we can find a place to relax until the representatives from Hogwarts get here.”
“I thought we already went through customs,” protested Dash.
“Yeah,” said Paulina.  “The American side.  To make sure we weren’t smuggling anything out.  Now we have to go through the British side, to make sure we aren’t smuggling anything in.”
“Smuggling isn’t really the main issue,” said the chaperon, “but, yes.  MACUSA knows you aren’t in the states anymore, and we have to make sure the Ministry over here knows you are, so you can comply with their laws and such.  Oh, and so you can get the Trace, but that isn’t important.”
“The Trace?” asked Sam, doubling her word count for the day. Ever since the attack, she had been rather taciturn.  
“It’s how they keep track of underage magic over here,” explained the chaperon.  “MACUSA phased it out a few years ago.  It isn’t very reliable, and besides, recent studies show that magical persons of any age can use magic accidentally, and there’s no good way to tell if there is a magical adult nearby, so…”  She gave herself a little shake.  “But it’s the law here, and it doesn’t matter.  You’ll be at Hogwarts the whole time, anyway.”
“You mean they’ll be tracking us?” asked Danny, trying to keep the alarm from his voice.  That could be… problematic.  Considering what he was really here for, and all.  
“Not you in particular,” said the chaperon, snagging Tucker by the back of his shirt before he could make a detour to investigate a guarded cart of ominously sparking electronics.  She pulled him back.  “It’s my understanding that every child with the trace on them shows up as a dot on a map, and the dot changes color if magic is performed near them.  Some of the more sophisticated versions can determine what kind of magic, but, well… it isn’t like they ever know which dot belongs to which person, so unless you’re living with all no-maj family members—They call them muggles, here, I think—in a particular house, it is very difficult for them to determine who did what.  I’d tell you more, but this isn’t my area of expertise.  Perhaps the customs agents will know more?  You should ask when we go through…”
Danny began to tune her out.  He caught Sam’s eye, then Tucker’s, and they all nodded at each other a little bit.  Not that they had a plan or anything, but sometimes it helped to know that other people also found a situation to be sucky.  
Where would the Minister of Magic be in all this mess, anyway? Danny let his eyes rove over the hall. There was no guarantee that he was even here today, and Danny wasn’t to the point where he wanted to reveal himself. He had been given lots of instructions, but one of them had been to keep himself safe.  Clockwork had even said it was a priority.  
Best to stick to letters, for now.  Even if none of them had been answered, yet.
They reached the long, winding line that was customs, had their luggage gone through yet again.  Tucker lost another PDA, and Danny had to wonder how many more he had hidden.  The American side of customs had done a pretty good job of finding them.  Sam got taken aside for questioning, because some of her goth paraphernalia had a passing resemblance to ‘Dark’ objects.  Star had to explain her medications.  Valerie set off some sort of magical metal detector, and the customs agents started arguing about what had caused it.  No one had found out about her suit yet.
Meanwhile, Danny was sent to another table, to fill out forms for Jazz.  Again. Because, for reasons Danny didn’t fully understand, even with everything Clockwork and the other Ancients told him, wizards thought they could control and regulate what ghosts did and where they went.  
Danny did not particularly care for wizards, as a group. The paperwork—The stupid, pointless paperwork, because Jazz was going to do what she wanted and no one would stop her, he’d make sure of it—made him angry.  A lot of things made him angry, lately, when they didn’t just make him depressed or sullen.  
“Breathe, Danny,” said Jazz, leaning down, next to his ear. “The language in this is stupid, but I don’t mind being called names.  We both know they’re wrong, and what they think isn’t important anyway, yeah?”
“Yeah,” said Danny, forcing his muscles to relax.  He finished the paperwork.  
They passed through the last customs barrier together, and soon found themselves in a large atrium with a large, extremely gaudy, gold fountain in the center.  
Now, Danny had to admit, he had only the briefest of encounters with house elves and goblins, and none at all with centaurs, but he couldn’t imagine that the look of adoration on their faces was at all accurate. At least not for the species as a whole.
He tried to imagine the statue with a ghost in it, with a half-ghost in it, and he just—
Yeah.  No.
Wizards.  
Or, at least, these wizards.  Whatever.  
They found a bench off to one side, to wait for the Hogwarts representatives.  Danny had to wonder how they’d find them.  Would they hold signs?  Seemed probable.  Everything in the ‘wizarding world’ seemed to be stuck fifty years back in time, if not more.
Or, maybe, the chaperon knew who they were meeting and would wave at them.  Like she was doing now.  
Okay, so, Danny had to check himself to make sure he wasn’t coming up with random prejudices.  Ancients.  If his first encounter with the supernatural had been those people in cloaks showing up out of thin air and starting to kill people, he’d probably never be able to pull himself out of that mindset.  
Not all wizards were terrible.  Like the wandmaker.  She was okay.
He took the time to assess the two witches who had come to pick them up.  They were opposites of each other, at least in appearance.  One was tall, thin, and severe, almost sharp.  The other was short and round and sort of soft around the edges.  The only areas in which they demonstrated similarity were their age and apparent gender.
“Alright, kids.  This is Professor McGonagall,” she gestured to the taller woman, “and this is Professor Sprout.  They’re the heads of Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, respectively.  Minerva, Pomona, these are Dash Baxter, Daniel Fenton, Tucker Foley, Valerie Grey, Samantha Manson, Paulina Sanchez, and Star Thunder.”
“And Jazz,” said Danny, annoyed that his sister had, once again, been left out.
“Hey,” said Jazz.  “Nice to meet you.”
Professor McGonagall nodded.  “We will be taking you to Diagon Alley to pick up school supplies for the year before we go to Hogwarts.”
“Yeah,” said Star, eyes tracking a flock of apparently animate paper airplanes, “we know.”
McGonagall raised an eyebrow but otherwise didn’t comment. “Do you want to come with us, Cerise?”
“No, I have a few other things to do on this side of the Atlantic.  That’s why they sent me.  Have a good time in Diagon Alley, kids, it’s a historic place!”

Danny had to wonder about goblins.  Did they just… really like banks, or were they forbidden from holding jobs elsewhere?  Or effectively forbidden by prejudice?  Because, thus far, he had only seen goblins when changing currency.  ‘No-maj’ money to the denominations used by American wizards, and now from that to the infinitely more confusing British ‘galleons.’
It would probably be rude to ask.  
Maybe he could find a book…
But were these people self-aware enough to write about stuff like that?  He shook his head.  Prejudice, prejudice…  He barely knew anything about any of these people, he shouldn’t jump to conclusions prematurely.  
Not that he didn’t already know several unsavory things about their system of governance, thanks to the Ancients.  And their not-so-little terrorist problem.  And the fact that they thought erasing people’s memories with a spell that could cause long-term brain damage was A-Okay.
Yeah.  But that didn’t mean all of them were bad.  Just that their government sucked.  Which was true for almost all governments, so it didn’t mean anything.
McGonagall and Sprout were very efficient as they went through the shops, giving the impression that they had done this, or something like this, many times before.  They did not allow detours, despite the many, many distracting things on display on the street and in the windows.  Professor Sprout, however, kept up a running commentary on what things were, so it wasn’t too frustrating.  
About halfway through the shopping trip, they stopped at the place that sold uniforms.  Sprout stayed with them, while McGonagall left to go get other supplies.  It was an experience.  Other than his jumpsuit, Danny had never had any clothing fitted specifically for him before.  
The fitting made him… nervous.  
The tape measures and needles flew close to his skin.  The seamstress who had been assigned to him also kept touching him, which was part of her job, and it wasn’t invasive or anything, but still.  Also, there were a lot of other teens, and even some preteen kids, in the store, getting their uniforms, and they were all staring.
What they were staring at wasn’t the same from person to person, Paulina and Jazz seemed to be the biggest targets for whatever reason, but it was still staring.  The parents waiting with their kids were staring as well, and Danny started to fidget. Which meant that he got stabbed by the needle a few times.  Which wasn’t fun.  
But eventually that was over, and they were on their way to Hogwarts.

Considering that Agilbert had tried to compress years’ worth of magical education into the space of a few months for these students, the results were remarkable.  True, with one notable exception, none of them were on a fifth-year level in Transfiguration, but Minerva didn’t feel the need to put them all in first-year or remedial classes, either.  
She could only hope they did as well in their assessments in other subjects.  They would have a hard enough time figuring out schedules for these seven, without having to account for them bouncing across year levels.  
She picked up the written assessment from the one student she would be accepting into fifth-year Transfiguration.  His penmanship was shaky, none of them had quite mastered writing with quills, and his grasp of the theory behind the spells was incomplete, but it was better than some.  She tried not to roll her eyes as she thought of Crabbe and Goyle.  
As a teacher, she should be above that.  Alas.  
Mr. Fenton did have some insights in his essay questions that were truly extraordinary for a person who didn’t even know magic existed at the beginning of the year.  Perhaps they had another Hermione on their hands, although he didn’t give off the same air as she did.  Or he had spent the summer focusing only on Transfiguration.  Or Mr. Fenton had a singular talent in Transfiguration. Regardless, gifted and motivated students were always a pleasure to teach.  
Minerva gathered her papers and left to meet Filius, who had tested the students before her.  She was tempted to go look in on them now and see how the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor was handling her first teaching experience but suppressed the urge.  She would see them, and, sadly, Delores Umbridge, at lunch in only an hour.
Which was why she was so surprised to find the children in a hall so far away from Delores’ room.  
Then she reminded herself that, appearances aside, these were not fifth-year students.  They had no experience navigating the castle.  
“Are you lost?” she asked.
The students exchanged glances.  “Uh, sort of?” said Miss Sanchez, twirling a curl of hair around her fingers.  “We weren’t sure if we should try to find Mr. Snape, or if we should go to the lunch hall.”
“Professor Snape,” corrected Minerva, mildly.  “Did you already finish Professor Umbridge’s assessment?”
“She didn’t give us an assessment,” said Miss Manson, angrily.  
Minerva’s eyebrows went up.  “Excuse me?”
“Yeah,” said Mr. Fenton.  “She basically said that she was doing the same curriculum for everyone, so she didn’t need to.  So, we were wondering if we should move on to, um, potions?  Potions.  Or if we should go to lunch, or just hang out, or what.”  
“Professor Snape is unlikely to be expecting you at this point,” said Minerva, feeling a headache growing behind her eyes.  What was Delores thinking?  The same curriculum for all years?  For eleven-year-olds and eighteen-year-olds?  There would be riots.  Or at least hexes.  “I can take you to the Great Hall.”
“Thanks, Ms. McGonagall,” said Mr. Foley.  And what was that he was hiding in his robes?  How many cursed muggle machines had he smuggled in?
Minerva sighed.  Honestly, it was probably harmless, though she possibly should speak to Charity about it.  “Professor McGonagall.”
“Sorry,” said Mr. Fenton.  “It’s just… hard to adjust.”  He rubbed the back of his neck.  
“I suppose it is,” she said.  “This way, children.”

Jazz floated through a wall, carefully avoiding the paintings.  Their inhabitants weren’t quite ghosts, from what she and Danny could tell, but they also weren’t not ghosts.  
It hadn’t taken her long last night to find the actual wizarding ghosts.  They’d been expecting her, in more ways than one.  But they had been weird.  Empty. They didn’t have any ectoplasm in them, and the intensity that was a part of every other ghost Jazz had ever met, Danny included, was absent.  
Clockwork and the Lady had warned them about that, before sending Danny, and by extension Jazz, Sam, and Tucker, off on his mission. Jazz just hadn’t quite believed it.  
Wizarding ghosts weren’t made of passion, need, want, duty, or even stubbornness.  They were made of fear.  Fear, by itself, didn’t hold ectoplasm well, especially not fear of death.  Wizarding ghosts might as well be mere imprints for all the power they had.
From the beginning, Jazz had been less than enthusiastic about pretending to be one of them.  Now, she was even less so.
It wasn’t their fault, though.  At least, it wasn’t entirely their fault.  None of the ghosts here were around back when the Ancients and the wizards of the day came together and put their names to the Tenebris Carta, and they were trying to make amends.  It sounded like they hoped the old treaty could be renegotiated, or that they hoped Danny and Jazz could get them an exception.  
Jazz didn’t hate them.  Didn’t dislike them or anything, and Danny would probably try to help them, so long as they didn’t turn evil or anything.  That was just the kind of person Danny was.  
She just needed more time to… adjust to them.  And the paintings.  Because wow.  
“Ah, Miss Fenton!”  
Jazz twisted herself over, mid-air.  “You can call me Jazz, if you want, Sir Nicholas.”
The silvery ghost smiled.  “If you insist.  We’re going down to the Great Hall, to introduce ourselves to your companions over lunch.  I was wondering if you would like to join us.”
“Sure,” said Jazz, descending to float by the other ghost. “But who do you mean by ‘we?’”
“All the castle ghosts,” said Sir Nicholas, “and possibly Peeves, though he won’t be invited.”
“Peeves?”
“The poltergeist.  He isn’t really a ghost.  At least…  he’s not a ghost like us.”
“Mhm,” said Jazz.  “Should I look forward to meeting him, or should I be very afraid?”
“Ah, neither, I suppose?  He tends to play pranks, but he never does anything terribly dangerous, and he couldn’t hurt you if he tried.”
“Well,” said Jazz, “as long as he doesn’t mess with my brother, we’ll probably get along just fine.”  She flexed her hands to disperse the pale green flames that had started to creep up her fingers.  “If he does, I’ll tear him apart.”
“Speaking of your brother, do you have any guesses as to which house he will be joining?”
“I wasn’t under the impression it was a choice,” said Jazz.
“It isn’t, exactly.  Students are sorted into the houses with, well, I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but houses are selected based on a student’s personality, aptitudes, and values.  Normally, if they came in as first-years, they would be sorted on the first, but given the circumstances, they’ll be sorted tonight.  I’m rather hoping to have a few new students for my house.”
Jazz grinned, detecting a note of competition.  “And what does your house look for?  Gryffindor, right?”
“Bravery,” said Sir Nicholas, proudly.  “Considering your brother’s accomplishments, I’m looking forward to seeing him join.”
“He is the bravest person I know,” said Jazz.

Several dozen ghosts phasing through the walls didn’t just set off Danny’s fight-or-flight response.  Sam readied her wrist-lasers, while Tucker grabbed Danny’s wrist and started hunting for a place to hide Danny so his transformation wouldn’t be noticeable.  Dash and Star took cover under one of the tables.  Paulina pulled out her wand.  Valerie materialized a hand blaster.  
It wasn’t entirely clear what weapon went off first, but it didn’t really matter.  The end result was chaos.
“Oops,” said Jazz.

“I am so, so, sorry,” said Jazz, hovering over Danny. Literally.  
“It’s fine,” said Danny.  “Really.”
“No, it isn’t.  I should have realized how everyone would react.  I should have told them to stop it, or something.”
“They were already on their way through the walls when you got there, weren’t you?” asked Tucker, swinging his legs back and forth as he sat on the end of the hospital bed.  
No one had been seriously injured, but a few tables had been exploded before the teachers had calmed everyone down and confiscated the ‘bizarre muggle weapons.’  On the other hand, everyone had a number of inconvenient scrapes and bruises that Madam Pomfrey insisted on taking a look at.
“Still,” said Jazz.  “I know all of you have PTSD from repeated ghost attacks and those people, I should have known what that would look like to you.”
“Er,” said Dash.  “It really is fine.”
“Yeah,” grunted Valerie, which was surprising.  
Outside of ‘Team Phantom,’ none of the others interacted with Jazz very much.  They didn’t seem to know how.  Valerie, however, outright avoided Jazz most of the time.  
Which, well.  Danny wasn’t about to call her behavior reasonable, but it was definitely in-character. This seemed like a good sign, though.
“Yes, dear,” agreed Madam Pomfrey.  “It isn’t your fault.  We adults should have said something before things got out of hand like that.”  She waved her wand back and forth over Star’s prominent black eye, and the bruise just… vanished.  Like Star had never been hurt.  
Danny inhaled slowly.  It wasn’t the first time he had seen magical healing—The aurors who had arrived a few hours after the attack on Amity Park had done a great deal—but if there was anything of magic that Danny wanted to learn, it was that.  And anything protective.  
“Is there a class for that?” he asked.  
“For what?”
“Healing.”
“Yes, it’s an elective,” said Madam Pomfrey.  “Though it does have a few required courses. Perhaps you will be able to take it next year?”
Danny swallowed down envy and nodded.  “Yeah, I guess we aren’t going to have time for electives, for the most part.”
“You may be surprised.  Now, I think you’re all set, unless you’re hiding something from me?”
The students shook their heads.  
“Good.  I believe Professor Snape is expecting you?”

“Did that seem… weirdly easy to you?” asked Sam.  
Danny thought about it for a second.  “Not the ‘what does this plant or animal part do’ questions,” he said, finally, “but the practical part of it?  Yeah.  It was just… cooking.  Really fiddly cooking, but still cooking.”
“Speaking of,” said Tucker, “how did you get by the parts where you had to use animal body parts.”
“Oh, I didn’t,” said Sam.  “I just skipped those.  I’m pretty sure I failed, judging by the look on Professor Snape’s face.  My end result was pretty nasty-looking.  It smelled bad, too.”
“You’re the reason we were stuck in an unventilated basement breathing in burnt hair fumes?” asked Paulina.
“Yeah.  I mean, it didn’t smell like burnt hair to me, but probably.”
Paulina sighed.  “I have to hand it to you, girl, you stand by your convictions.”
“I don’t think it’s unventilated,” said Star, contemplatively. “I wasn’t really paying attention, but there was definitely movement in all the, uh, vapors, or whatever. Professor Snape totally needs a better teacher face, though.  Like, does he just have the one expression, or what?”
“No, no,” said Sam.  “The look he gave me when I turned in my disaster was way more pronounced.”
“Still needs more than disdain and mega-disdain,” said Tucker. “Even Lancer had a wider range.”
“Come on, guys,” said Danny, “he can’t be much more than, what, thirty?  He has time to develop more emotions.”
“Yeah,” said Valerie, flatly.  “Give it a couple more years, and maybe he’ll nail down hyper-disdain.”
This surprised a snicker out of everyone.  Almost everyone.
“Uh, guys?” said Dash.  “I think I might have been the one who made it smell like burnt hair.  What was it supposed to smell like?”
“I’m so glad I don’t need to breathe,” said Jazz.  
“Oh my gosh, Jazz, that’s way too soon.”

“What do you think?” asked the hat.  
The hat.  
Danny could understand the paintings.  He could almost understand how the paintings worked, even.  They had the shapes of people who had once lived, their image, their likeness, and had by virtue of magic snagged a piece of their soul as they left this world.
But a hat.  Who would try to give a hat sentience?  And how?  Was the thing possessed by an extraordinarily unfortunate ghost?
“Um,” said Danny, shaking off the shock.  “I liked it!”
“Sorry,” said Star, “I’m just a little surprised.   Are you really a… a hat?”
“Yes, I am the Sorting Hat!  It is my job to divine which of our four houses each of you should belong to.  Weren’t you listening?”
“We were,” assured Star, “it’s just…”
“You’re a hat,” finished Tucker.  “Did you used to be a wizard or something?”
“Goodness, no, I was Godric Gryffindor’s hat!  He enchanted me.”
“So, are you like a computer program?” continued Tucker. “Are you an AI?”
“No Skynet,” muttered Sam.  
“Why do you guys keep thinking I’m going to make Skynet?”
Professor McGonagall cleared her throat.  The other teachers were all present, except for the headmaster and Professor Umbridge.  Their absences had not been explained.  
“When you hear your name,” said McGonagall, “please come up and put the Sorting Hat on.  It also usually helps if you sit down on the stool.  Once the hat has determined your house, take it off, and put it down for the next person to use.”
Alright.  That sounded easy enough.  Danny wasn’t quite sure why such a big production was being made of this.  A few comments from the teachers and the ghosts—not that Danny had talked to them very much, this was the first full day they’d been at the school—suggested there was some kind of rivalry between the houses, but it couldn’t be that bad.  It was school.  
Except Casper High had its nasty cliques, too, and he could just imagine how school-sanctioned cliques would work out. Especially if they were backed up by centuries of history and a magic personality test.  
Fun.  
Not.
He hoped he, Sam, and Tucker would all be in the same house. And that Dash wouldn’t revert to being a bully as soon as other students were added to the mix.  And that…  Oh, he hoped a lot of things, but he would be thankful if the ‘school’ part of this whole ordeal was as easy and drama-free as possible.
After all, he had other things to worry about.
“Baxter, Dash,” said McGonagall, evenly.  
“Good luck, man,” said Tucker, holding up his thumbs. Everyone mirrored him.  
Dash looked very strange, sitting on that small stool, but he wasn’t on it for more than a second before the hat shouted, “GRYFFINDOR!”
The hat was very loud.  Dash returned to the bench with a confused expression on his face.
“Fenton, Daniel.”
Danny stood up slowly.  He had expected something more like a conversation.  Was this a mind reading hat?  Was the ‘take a peek inside your head’ bit literal?  
Ugh, this was going to be a pain.  Good thing he had a lot of practice in compartmentalizing.  
“Ah, a burgeoning occlumens!” said the hat in its warm voice. “How unusual.”
“I have no idea what that means,” said Danny, mildly.  
“Oh, I’m sure your teachers will explain it to you.  I won’t take the pleasure from them.”  
The voice was, Danny decided, more than half in his head, which was…  Unsettling. Voices in his head usually either meant mind control, some jerk with telepathy, or someone trying to overshadow him. He didn’t like this.  He really didn’t like this.  
“No need to be so nervous,” said the hat.  “I keep everything strictly confidential.”
“Forgive me if I’m not reassured,” said Danny.  
“Hmf.  In any case, you have traits that would do you well in any of the houses.  Perhaps not Ravenclaw, though.  As clever as you are, you are behind academically.  You need a more nurturing environment, I imagine. As for the others… You are brave. You love your friends.  You’d do anything for them?”
“Yeah,” said Danny.  
“And there’s… something else you need to do?”
Danny was silent.  
“I can’t see it very clearly, but it is an important task?”
Danny shrugged.  
“A goal.”
“Sure.”
“I think, then, the choice is between the badger and the snake,” said the hat.  “But I believe the decisive phrase here is ‘do anything.’  Therefore, you will be SLYTHERIN!”
Wow.  Even bracing himself, that had been loud.
Danny stood up and carefully deposited the hat back on the stool.  He noticed on his way back to the bench that more than one teacher looked flabbergasted, and several spectating ghosts looked disappointed.  Almost crushed.  He resisted the urge to roll his eyes.  Yes, he was a celebrity among the undead, no he couldn’t be in two houses at once. They should have prepared themselves.
Not to mention that, as important as education was, it was somewhat secondary to his true goals here.  Which the ghosts partially knew about.  
“Foley, Tucker.”

“I can’t believe it,” said Filius later that evening when all the teachers (sans Umbridge) gathered for a drink.  
“I did say you would find the results surprising,” said Sybill, smugly.  
“Two muggle-born American transfer students in Slytherin,” said Filius, wonderingly.  “I didn’t expect to get any of them for Ravenclaw, but Slytherin?”
“I would appreciate it if you didn’t denigrate my house, Filius,” said Severus.  
The diminutive teacher waved his hand.  “Oh, that’s not my intention.  But you have to admit, it seems like a strange choice.”
“They aren’t really muggle-born, though, are they?” asked Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank, opting for tea instead of wine.  “I’m not sure about the Sanchezes, but the Fentons were quite prominent, back in the day, weren’t they?  At least, one of their ancestors wrote the first English book on new world magical creatures.”
“Muggle-borns and half-bloods are chosen for Slytherin all the time,” said Severus, annoyance clearly increasing.  “Not, perhaps, as often as for the other houses, but it does happen regularly.  You don’t have to be so shocked.”
“It’s nothing against Slytherin,” assured Pomona.  “We were just expecting them to get split between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor.  American stereotypes in play, I suppose.”
“Mm,” said Septima, who was doodling equations on the back of her wrist.  “On my end, my thought process was more that they wouldn’t do well trying to play catchup in Ravenclaw, and they wouldn’t have the ambition and drive to hold their own in Slytherin.  The Sorting Hat disagreed.”
“Evidently,” said Severus.  He didn’t look especially pleased, but then he never did.  
“Better you than me,” said Filius, after a few minutes.  “I can’t imagine it will be easy integrating them.”
Minerva, who had three of the students, laughed, “You aren’t getting out of it that easy, Filius.  They still have charms.  How did they do, by the way?  We never really got around to discussing it.”
“None of them were brilliant,” said Filius.  “But they have promise.  I was wondering what you all thought about doing an accelerated class for some of them, to get them to a higher year-level.”

Being on the Hogwarts Express without Ron at his side felt wrong.  Sure, he wasn’t entirely alone, Ginny was with him, and Hegwig, but it felt different. He felt exposed.  
Although, that might have had something to do with all the people staring and pointing at him.  
The Daily Prophet had spent most of the summer convincing everyone he was a lying show-off.  The only things that had really competed with the ‘Harry Potter is delusional’ articles were the ‘haha, America is going to hell in a handbasket, aren’t we glad we aren’t them?’ articles.  
(Harry wouldn’t have even cast a glance at the second, except that he and the others had overheard some of the Order members mention Death Eaters had been behind the attack on the muggle town.  Even so, reading them made him feel grimy.)
They had to go all the way to the end of the train to get away from the unfriendly eyes, and that’s where they found Neville.  
“Hi, Harry,” he said, out of breath.  “Hi, Ginny…  Everywhere’s full… I can’t find a seat…”
Ginny squeezed past him to look at the compartments behind him.  “What are you talking about?  There’s room in this one, there’s only Loony Lovegood in here—”
“I don’t want to disturb her—”
“Don’t be silly, she’s alright.”  She slid the door open and pulled her trunk in.  “Hi, Luna.  Is it okay if we take these seats?”
It took a couple minutes to get situated in the compartment, during which time Harry tried not to stare at Luna Lovegood very much.  The blonde girl was surrounded by an aura of almost impenetrable oddness.  
“Have a good summer, Luna?” asked Ginny.  
Luna opened her mouth to answer, then closed it, frowning. “No, actually.  My father had some friends in Amity Park.  The town in America, you know.”  She turned her head slightly.  “You’re Harry Potter.”
“I know I am,” said Harry.  
The four of them then proceeded to have a fairly enjoyable conversation, right up until Neville’s mimbulus mimbletonia sprayed them all with rancid sap and Cho Chang opened the compartment door.  
Cho Chang who he had a crush on.
Yeah.
Harry had a strong desire to curl up and die.  
Ron and Hermione did not turn up for over an hour, by which time the food trolley had come and gone, and most of the bounty acquired from it had been eaten.  
“Oh, you have food.  Brilliant,” said Ron, taking a Chocolate frog from Harry and throwing himself into the seat next to him.  “You won’t believe what happened.”
“Malfoy’s Slytherin prefect?” asked Harry.  The fear had been buzzing in the back of his head ever since Ron and Hermione had gotten their badges.  
“Well, yeah,” said Ron.  
“And that complete cow Pansy Parkinson,” said Hermione.  
“But that’s not the real surprise,” said Ron, oddly dismissive. “You remember all those articles in the Prophet?  Not the ones about you.  About that town, in America?”
“Yeah?”
“Well, some of kids who survived were wizards.”
“And witches,” added Hermione.  She pulled Crookshanks into her lap.  
“Well, apparently their ministry didn’t think they’d be safe over there, so they sent them here.  Seven of ‘em.”
“What?  They think it’s safe here?” In Hogwarts, maybe it was, except Harry had been snatched away even with all eyes on him, in the middle of a heavily attended competition.  “With Voldemort on the loose?”
Everyone flinched.  
“Well, that isn’t exactly being publicized,” said Hermione. “Not—Not in the right way.  Besides, none of them knew about magic before this summer.  They’re all our age, though.  It must have been a shock.  Especially after losing their families like that.”  She shuddered.  “We’ve been asked to help them acclimate.  That’s why the meeting ran so long.”  
“Are they in Gryffindor, then?” asked Luna.  
“They’re sort of spread out,” said Hermione.  “They’re in all the houses but Ravenclaw.”
“And I’m still not sure how they got put into Slytherin if they’re muggleborn,” said Ron, who had tilted his head back to stare at the ceiling.  “It doesn’t make sense,” he complained.
“Merlin was muggleborn,” said Luna.  “He was a Slytherin.  I’m sure there were others.”
Ron pulled a face.  
(Harry thought about Voldemort—About Tom Riddle and his muggle father.)
“Anyway,” said Hermione.  “We have three of them.  Hufflepuff and Slytherin each have two.”
First Death Eaters in America, and now Slytherins from there?  Harry shook himself internally.  No, it probably didn’t mean anything.  
“We probably won’t see much of them,” said Ron.  “They’re taking mostly remedial classes.  First and second year stuff.”
“Say,” said Luna, “do you know who the prefects are for the other houses?”
“Anthony Goldstein and Padma Patil for Ravenclaw,” said Hermione.  
“And Ernie Macmillian and Hannah Abbot for Hufflepuff,” added Ron.  “You know, other than helping keep track of the younger kids and patrolling corridors every so often, there’s not really much we’re supposed to do as prefects.  From how Percy talked about it, I always sort of thought there’d be more.”  Then he grinned.  “We can give punishments out if people are misbehaving.  I can’t wait to get Crabbe and Goyle for something…”
Predictably, this set off Hermione.

“There’s nothing else about the Americans?” asked Draco, frowning. “I’m not sure how we’re expected to ‘help them acclimate’ with so little information.”
The Head Girl rolled her eyes.  “You’re expected to talk to them,” she said.  “Considering that they’re real human beings and all. They’ve been through a lot, apparently, and I can appreciate them not wanting to have it spread around.”
Unspoken was the ‘do you?’ at the end of her sentence.  Draco let his lip curl.  People from other houses were always so eager to think the worst of Slytherin when all they were trying to be was logical.  
“I’ll do that, then,” said Draco, stepping out of the prefects’ carriage.  He needed to find Crabbe and Goyle.  Annoying. As much as he was their leader, and he watched them, they were also there to watch him and—
(Draco chose not to think of the people who had arrived at Malfoy Manor over the Summer, of the things he’d seen.)
(When he was quite young, he’d read a book about muggle Germany during the time of Grindelwald, and how Grindelwald had subtly influenced things in that country.  He’d always been struck by the use of informants, of how everyone had been convinced to watch one another and report those who stepped out of line.  He found he could appreciate it even more now that he was inside a similar trap.)
But the Americans.  It was so odd.  They couldn’t have any lineage to speak of.  Not if they were living like muggles in some backwater town.  
… some backwater town the Dark Lord had seen fit to destroy.
… ‘Fenton’ sounded vaguely familiar.  
… Perhaps ‘Sanchez’ was from a Spanish pureblood line.
Draco would have to do research.  He was good at that.  But whatever he found, he’d have to keep an eye on the Americans.  
If nothing else, it would be good to have friends overseas.

“We’ll be in different dorms after this,” said Danny, vaguely depressed.  “Different classes, too, most of the time.”
“We can still see each other during the day,” said Sam.  “I think the only meal that’s segregated by house is dinner, anyway.  We should be able to hang out at all the other times.”
Danny sighed.  He had yet to have much success in his missions.  
He’d felt something wrong on the seventh floor, but he hadn’t been able to pinpoint it.  He’d found a giant inaccessible dungeon full of snake statues, a snake skeleton, and a number of other somewhat questionable things underneath the school. There had been an echo of something there, but whatever it was had been long gone by the time Danny got there. He also had the faint sense of a ghost—a real ghost—beginning to form there, and he hoped he hadn’t messed it up by spreading his ectoplasm around.  
On the second front, he hadn’t heard anything from any of the leaders of the wizarding world.  Unless he counted a reply from a secretary who thought he was disturbed.  
But there was one bright spot.  They’d met the Headmaster yesterday, and Danny was certain the man’s wand was one of the two subjects of his third quest.  Which was hilarious.  Out of everything, he’d thought the Hallows would be the hardest to find.  
Not that he could just take it.  Not now.  Not yet. Not with everything else still so uncertain and Clockwork’s quiet assurance that he would find most of what he needed to at Hogwarts.  
(Clockwork and the Lady had made a deal with him, bound in old magic and ghost law.  Three tasks. Three nearly impossible quests, but at the end of them, the one who had destroyed half of his world, who had harmed his people, would be gone, and in the meantime Amity Park would be protected. Danny knew he had gotten the better half of the deal, with Clockwork practically on his side.  Even with the… other requirements.  Still, he couldn’t help but feel discouraged.)
So, he’d stay, and wait, and keep a careful eye on the Headmaster, and try to find the thing on the seventh floor, and figure out what spells worked on ghosts and if he could circumvent them, and figure out how to intercept at least one magical head of state, and, and, and…
Ugh.  
“If we aren’t too busy,” said Danny.  
“You know we’re here to help,” said Tucker, prodding Danny’s side.  “And even if the rest of them don’t know about, you know, I think they’d be willing to help, too.”
“Within reason,” said Sam.  
It was true.  Surviving near-death experiences together tended to make people—well.  Not necessarily friends, but something more than mere acquaintances.  Allies, at the very least.
(Especially if a lot of other people had died at the same time, and the survivors were holding on to the relationships they still had with all their strength.)
“I know,” said Danny.  He bit his lip.  “There’s something on the seventh floor, I think.  Need more time to figure out what, though.”
“We’ll keep an eye out,” promised Sam.  
“And an ear, too,” said Tucker, tapping his.  “I’m sure there’ll be lots of rumors and legends in a place like this.”
“Me too.  Jazz has been interrogating the paintings, you know.”  He frowned.  “They’re so weird.”
“Everything about this is weird,” said Sam.  “Can’t believe we thought ghosts were the whole extent of the supernatural.  It seems so dumb, now.”
“Not really,” said Danny.  “I mean, ghosts were all that we saw, and they didn’t really mention anything else.”  He sighed. “Guess we should get ready for the feast or whatever?”
“Yeah,” said Sam, standing.  “Good luck meeting your classmates.  Housemates?  How are we even supposed to say that?”
“I don’t know,” said Danny.  He sighed.  “At least we each have at least one person from Casper with us.”
“That’s true,” said Tucker.  “Can’t say I feel like I have much in common with Star, though. Other than,” he gestured, vaguely, “all the Amity Park stuff.”
Sam raised an eyebrow.  “And you think I have a lot in common with Dash?”
“You have a lot in common with Valerie,” offered Tucker.
Sam shrugged.  “We do both fight ghosts.”
Tucker’s grin turned slightly wicked.  “And have a crush on the same guy.”

Danny let himself smile.  It had been a while since the three of them had gotten some good banter in. It was hard to verbally spar when you were depressed.

Sitting next to Paulina at an otherwise empty table felt strange.  But it would feel even stranger to sit not next to Paulina at the very large empty table.  Danny let his eyes drift over to the other three house tables.  It seemed that the others were of the same opinion, sitting together in little, painfully awkward clusters.  
All the close friend groups had been pulled apart, after all.
“Danny,” said Paulina.  Her voice wavered at the end.
“Yeah?”
“The wizard kids will have cliques.”
“I mean, yeah, they’re still human, right?”  And even ghosts formed groups.  
Paulina nodded and clenched her jaw.  “We’re going to get into one,” she said, firmly.  “We’ll have to find the best one, and fast, otherwise we’ll wind up at the bottom of the pecking order.  You know how much that sucks.”
“Yeah,” said Danny, his eyebrows raised.  He was a little surprised to be included.  
“The wizards we’ve met so far are pretty weird.  You know how to deal with weird.”
“Uh,” said Danny.  “Is this a strategy thing?  Isn’t it a bit too late for that?”
“It’s never too late to salvage social standing, and we haven’t even started,” said Paulina.  “Anyway, you’re the backup plan, in case they’re aliens who don’t fall for my charm.”  She put a hand to her heart and fluttered her eyelashes.
“Should we even use charm like that here?  I mean, since it’s a class, now.”
“Hmf.  I’m good at that, too.”  She examined her fingernails.  “We’ll probably attract a bunch of people, just because we’re here and visible and new.  We just need to make sure that people stay interested in us.”
“I’m not sure I want attention, Paulina.”
“Then pay attention and follow my lead.  If you’re in the right clique, you can fade into the background.  Like Star. No one notices the stuff she gets up to. They’re all too focused on yours truly. As they should be.”
This was true, actually.  People didn’t really pay any attention to Star, except in her person as Paulina’s satellite.  Even Danny, before becoming Phantom and gaining a new perspective on life and the people in it, hadn’t.  
“Besides,” continued Paulina, “now that we, well.” She didn’t quite blush.  “You guys don’t suck as much as I thought you did.”
“Uh, thanks.  You, too?”
Wow.  That was quite possibly the worst response he could have had.  
Paulina sighed heavily.  
However, she was distracted from whatever she might have said to him by the first of the Hogwarts students coming in.  Paulina turned her attention away, her eyes flicking from one set of green and silver highlights to the next.  Whenever a student looked their way she smiled and waved, pouring on the charm.  
Danny didn’t know how she did it.  Social engineering was never going to be his strong point.
(Perhaps he could set Paulina and Star on the Minister of Magic’s trail.  They might have more luck.)
Before he could follow the train of thought, they were surrounded.  In a simply physical sense.  There was no malice and very little aggression from the students that sat near them, more than one of whom had prefects badges.  Still, Danny did have to fight down a knee-jerk reaction.  He saw Paulina shift uncomfortably as well, and he gave her robe what he hoped was a steadying tug.  
She returned it with a tight smile.  
There wasn’t much time to talk before Professor McGonagall stood up with the hat and started calling names.  Everyone went very quiet during the sorting, except for the cheer that rose with the hat’s every shout.  
Then there was food.  A lot of food.  Most of it was recognizable, but some of it was sort of weird.  Many things were pumpkin flavored.  There was even something Danny was fairly certain was pumpkin juice.
He didn’t know how to feel about that.
Paulina took the time to engage in social engineering. Danny took the time to watch.  They were both watched back, of course, but Paulina naturally drew more attention.  
However, there was one boy who kept staring at Danny. He was about their age and had pale blonde hair.  Really pale blonde hair.  
(Danny had thought Star and Dash were blonde.)
“You’re Daniel Fenton, correct?” asked the boy.  
“Um.  Yes. And you are?”
“Draco Malfoy.  I’m the fifth-year prefect.”
“Oh, Draco like the constellation?”
Draco blinked.  “Yes.”
“Did your parents like astronomy a lot, then?”
“Astrology,” corrected Draco.  “Astronomy is what muggles do.”
Danny carefully forced down the white-hot rage he felt at that statement.  Yeah, he had more than a normal admiration for astronomy, and, therefore, a more intense than normal reaction to astronomy and astrology being confused, but magic was real, apparently, so maybe astrology wasn’t useless.  Right.  Yeah.  And they were both about stars, planets, and space. Nothing to get mad at.
“It’s been a tradition in my mother’s family for generations,” Draco was saying, “although we occasionally make some allowances for other traditions.  My mother’s name is Narcissa, for example.  Is there anything similar in your family?”
“Dad’s side does ‘J’ names for the first born.  Jazz got stuck with that.”
The boy’s eyebrows went up.  “You have a sister?  She isn’t magical?”
“Magical enough to haunt me,” said Danny.  
“Pardon?”
“She died.  She’s around here somewhere, though.”  He gestured vaguely.  “Didn’t want to be around big crowds.  I think she said she was going to hang out with Myrtle?”
“Myrtle?  Do you mean Moaning Myrtle?  Who haunts the bathrooms?”
This time, the reaction Danny suppressed was a cringe, the emotion embarrassment on behalf of the young witch ghost.  “She just introduced herself as Myrtle.  Well, Myrtle Warren, but…  Yeah.  It’s kind of rude to describe someone as moaning, isn’t it?”
The boy puffed up, slightly, clearly offended.  
Oh, dear.

The Americans were… interesting, Harry thought.  
Ron and Hermione had sat near them as part of their ‘prefect duties,’ with Harry and therefore Ginny and Neville following after.  
Well.  That may have had more to do with curiosity than anything else.  
They introduced themselves by their first names only. Dash, Valerie, and Sam.  Dash was… well.  Harry had encountered people like him both before and after coming to Hogwarts.  For example, McClaggen.  Harry hadn’t ever interacted much with McClaggen, even if they were in the same house, but Dash definitely gave off the same feeling.  Meanwhile, Valerie just sort of glared at everyone, resisting all attempts at conversation while tearing at her food with extreme aggression.  Sam had managed to engage Hermione and Katie Bell in a conversation about dark magic that was getting Hermione progressively more flustered.  
Harry couldn’t tell if it was because of the misconceptions Sam had about magic in general, or because Sam seemed to think some kinds of dark magic should be legal.  
He was starting to get a very bad feeling about these Americans.

“Hey,” whispered Tucker, while the students around them were distracted by something a rather round ghost was saying.  
“What?” whispered Star.
“Is it just me, or is everyone here sort of depressed? Like, I can understand us being depressed, but…”
“No, no it’s not just you.  Wasn’t there something about a student death?  Some kind of freak accident.”
“Oh,” said the student sitting across from them.  “You heard about Cedric.”

Danny wondered if he could get to the Minister of Magic through Dolores Umbridge.  He hadn’t gotten a good read on her during their very brief encounters the previous week, but now...  She gave off the impression of having some kind of political power.  His understanding was that the headmaster had a lot of influence among the wizards and witches of this country, so for her to be interrupting him like that…
Or maybe he was like Danny and weak against social awkwardness.
Also, her speech seemed to have a deeper meaning he couldn’t decode.  He didn’t understand wizarding culture or their political climate enough, despite his research.
Eh.  He’d have to get a better grasp of her personality and position.  Hopefully, that wouldn’t be too hard.  He did have a class with her.

“The events of last spring have left a mark on the whole school,” said Severus Snape into the muffled quiet of the Slytherin common room, his voice just barely more emotive than during the placement test he had given the Casper High students, “and no doubt on many of your home lives as well. I want you to know that if you have any… concerns… regarding the behaviors of fellow students or… more sensitive topics, you can come to me.”
The man blinked slowly at them.  
“That is all,” he said, finally, and with an overly dramatic swish of his cloak he departed.  
The room quickly filled with light chatter, students breaking off into little cliques, some of them slipping away down shadowy corridors.
Paulina tugged him towards one of those groups.  
“Hi, Pansy,” she said, giving the girl a little wave, “hi, Draco.  We were wondering if you guys could show us around?  We were told our stuff would be moved here, but…”  She trailed off, shrugging elegantly.  
Danny tried to echo the movement.  
He most likely did not succeed.
(It wasn’t like he could tell.  His superpowers did not include seeing himself from the outside—Or maybe they did.  There could be a spell for that, he supposed.)
He had to admit, as the prefects made a (just slightly supercilious) show of presenting the Slytherin dormitories to them, that he rather liked the space.  It was surprisingly well-ventilated and warm, but there was still a general air of closeness, of security of bone-deep chill that spoke so well to his ghost half.  
Of course, a lot of that would probably evaporate once Danny tried to sleep in a room with half a dozen strangers, but, well, he’d deal with that when he got there.

Magic was great and all, but Tucker would trade it all away in a second if only to get his PDA to work properly.  
In the tent formed by his bedsheet and his body, Tucker hissed and rapped on the staticky screen, hoping an impact adjustment would do… something.  He didn’t know what.  The last three hadn’t done anything.  
The way the metal casing was heating up under his hand was disturbing.  Quickly, he thumbed the power button.  He didn’t have a lot of these left, and he wanted to be able to use them to communicate with Danny and Sam.  He missed their late-night Doom sessions.  
(Along with everything else about his life in Amity Park. He at least had the power to make talking to his friends possible.  The rest? Not so much.)
He groaned into his pillow.  He’d been working on this off and on all week.  Another night wouldn’t matter in the long run.  
Maybe one of his classes would help him understand what he was doing wrong.

Sam had sort of enjoyed needling Hermione (the girl reminded her a lot of Jazz), even if she knew she shouldn’t, but the nasty fight between some of the fifth year boys in the common room had really ruined the mood. Hermione’s friend, Harry, was apparently some sort of celebrity.  Like, in the same way Phantom had been a celebrity following Walker’s invasion.  
So.  Not really a great thing for him.  
Ugh.  Sympathy. Feelings.  She sighed and stared up at the red and gold ceiling.  If the color scheme didn’t do her in…

Danny met Jazz in the air over the school.  
“I didn’t see you much today,” he said, twisting hands that he is keeping carefully transparent.
“Yeah,” said Jazz.  “I’m just…  I’m still adjusting.  I think you’ll like Myrtle, by the way.  She’s lonely, but fun.  I think there might actually be a bit of ectoplasm in her, believe it or not.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.  She can flood the toilets, apparently.  Although… I’m not sure if she meant the toilets themselves, or just the room in general.”  She frowned. “Because she said something about sinks…”  She shook her head.  “Not important.  Want to hear what she told me about the secret underground room and the giant snake skeleton?  Not to mention all the other ridiculous stuff that’s happened here.  If this is ‘safer,’ I don’t want to know what the rest of the wizarding world is like.”
“Like what happened in Amity, I guess,” said Danny. “But!  Yes.  Please tell me what you found out.”

Breakfast was nice.  Especially when Sam, Danny, and Tucker compared schedules and realized that they had more classes together than they expected.  Not with all three of them at once, but even just two of them together was better than nothing.  
Yes, they got a lot of strange looks, especially when Jazz joined them.  Evidently, eating breakfast with people from other houses just wasn’t done.  Which was stupid, in Sam’s opinion.  Actually, the whole house system felt increasingly stupid to Sam.  She just didn’t understand the point.  Was it for sports?
It was probably for sports.  Sports were the root of all evil.  Just look at Dash.  He hadn’t had any sports for a whole Summer, and now he was acting like an actual decent human being.  
Okay.  That reasoning was suspect.  Sam would have to come back to this when she was more awake.  Early mornings were the worst.  
Anyway.  She had an acceptable breakfast with her friends and the people she’d grown to tolerate, then she set out to find History.  
Which is how she overheard the conversation between Hermione and her friends.  
“What’s S.P.E.W.?” she asked.
Hermione’s two friends glared at Sam.  Probably for the sin of eating with people from another house. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
“Well,” said Hermione, just slightly hesitant.  “It’s the Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare…”
(Sam found a new cause to get incandescently angry about. Wizard society sucked.)

Harry was surprised to see five of the Americans, the three Gryffindors and the two Slytherins, standing by the door to Defense Against the Dark Arts, quietly talking to each other.  
“What’re they doing, then?” asked Ron, scowling. “Consorting with the enemy?”
“Honestly, Ron,” said Hermione, rolling her eyes.  “They aren’t the enemy.  And they’re from the same place.  It must be difficult, being so far away from home.”
Ron grunted and shrugged.  “What d’you think Umbridge’ll be like, anyway?” he asked, changing the subject.  
They filed into the classroom, the remainder of the class, including the Slytherins, their green looking horribly out of place amongst all the red trim, following shortly after.  No one knew what Umbridge would be like, regarding punishment, so they didn’t want to immediately get on her bad side.  
“Well,” she said, in a sickly-sweet tone, “good afternoon!”
There was a mumbled response.  
Umbridge said “Tut, tut.”  She actually said tut tut.  Out loud.  “That won’t do, now, will it?  I should like you, please, to reply ‘Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge.’  One more time, please.  Good afternoon, class!”
“Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge,” said the class, in something approaching unison and the least enthusiastic tone Harry had heard since Ron had tried to convince Hermione to help him with his Divination homework last year.
“There, now,” said Professor Umbridge.  “That wasn’t too difficult, was it?  Wands away and quills out, please.”
Many of the students exchanged gloomy or exasperated looks. Lessons without wands tended to be uninteresting, with very few exceptions.  
(Instead of quills, the Americans produced pencils and pens from their bookbags.)
Umbridge opened her handbag and pulled out her own wand, which was as stubby as she was, and tapped the blackboard.  Words appeared on the board at once:  Defense Against the Dark Arts, A Return to Basic Principles.
Harry couldn’t quite repress a groan.  Luckily, he wasn’t the only one.  
“Well now, your teaching in this subject had been rather disrupted, hasn’t it?” stated Professor Umbridge.  She turned to face the class, her eyes briefly lingering on Harry, and then the Americans.  “Or completely nonexistent.  The constant changing of teachers, many of whom do not seem to have followed any Ministry-approved curriculum, has unfortunately resulted in your being far below the standard we would expect to see in your O.W.L. year.
“You will be pleased to know, however,” she continued, still acting like she was talking to kindergarteners, “that these problems are now to be rectified. We will be following a carefully structured, theory-centered, Ministry-approved course of defensive magic this year.”
Each word Umbridge spoke made Harry’s heart drop farther. How could Dumbledore let this woman teach them?  This year?  When knowing how to fight dark magic was more important than ever?
Umbridge rapped the board again, and new words appeared. Course aims:  1. Understanding the principles underlying defensive magic. 2. Learning to recognize situations in which defensive magic can legally be used.  3. Placing the use of defensive magic in a context for practical use.  
Oh.  This year was going to be bad.  As for the day, it got worse when Umbridge assigned a reading from what had to be the dullest book Harry had ever read.  Including that one time—No.  Focus.
He massaged his temples and wondered if he needed to get a new prescription for his glasses.  The words on the page refused to stay sharp.  
Harry looked up when the Americans started to whisper among themselves and caught sight of one of the most shocking things he had ever witnessed: Hermione not reading.  
Soon, everyone was staring either at Hermione or the Americans, who had left off whispering after some pointed glaring from Umbridge but had replaced the whispers with passionate gesturing at something in the back of the book.  Those, too, died down after a while, in favor of looking at Hermione.  
Eventually, Umbridge could no longer ignore the situation.  
“Did you want to ask something about the chapter, dear?”
“Not about the chapter, no.”
“Well, we’re reading just now.”  Umbridge smiled.  It wasn’t pleasant.  “If you have other queries, we can deal with them at the end of class.”
“I’ve got a query about your course aims,” said Hermione, undeterred.  
“And your name is—?”
“Hermione Granger.”
“Well, Miss Granger, I think the course aims are perfectly clear if you read them through carefully.”  
“Well, I don’t.  There’s nothing written up there about using defensive spells.”
“There’s nothing in the book about using spells, either!” said the Slytherin boy, waving his copy angrily.  “There aren’t even any of the, um.”  He paused and looked at Sam for a second.  
“Incantations,” said Sam.  “I mean, that’s what I’d call them?  I don’t know the official term.”
Umbridge inhaled through her teeth.  
“Using defensive spells?” she asked, voice pitched unnaturally high.  “Why, I can’t imagine any situation arising in my classroom that would require you to use a defensive spell, Miss—”
“And what about outside of the classroom?” interrupted the Slytherin boy.  
“Like, this is supposed to teach us how to not die, right?” asked the girl next to him, examining her fingernails.  
“You have to practice self-defense to actually get good at it,” agreed Valerie, crossing her arms.  “What’s the point of this class if we’re not going to actually learn how to do stuff?”
“Yes,” agreed Hermione, “surely the whole point of Defense Against the Dark Arts is to practice defensive spells?”
“Students,” gritted Umbridge, “will raise their hands when they wish to speak in my class.”
At once, a dozen hands went up.
“Miss Granger?” Umbridge asked, voice dangerous.  
“Isn’t the whole point of Defense Against the Dark Arts to practice defensive spells?”
“Miss Granger,” said Umbridge.  “As you are not a Ministry-trained educational expert, you are not qualified to decide what the ‘whole point’ of this, or any, class is. Wizards much older and cleverer than you have—”
“I really doubt that,” interjected Ron.  
Umbridge took another deep breath.  “You will be learning about defensive spells in a secure, risk-free way—”
“What’s the use of that?” demanded Harry, loudly.  “If we’re going to be attacked, it won’t be in a—”
“Hand, Mr. Potter!”
Predictably, Umbridge turned her back on him as soon as he thrust his fist into the air.  Instead, she called on Dean Thomas.  
(The part of Harry’s brain that wasn’t vibrating in frustration noted that the Americans were passing notes between each other.)
“Well, it’s like Harry said, isn’t it?” he asked, once she had gotten done with interrogating him about his name.  “If we’re going to be attacked, it won’t be risk-free—”
“Do you expect to be attacked in class?”
Harry was very tempted to say yes, considering that three of his four previous DADA teachers had wound up attacking him.  
… Did Professor Lupin’s werewolf form having a go at him bring the count up to four?
Umbridge talked over Dean.  “I do not wish to criticize the way things have been run in this school,” she said, with the air of someone who was about to do just that, “but you have been exposed to some very irresponsible wizards in this class, very irresponsible indeed—not to mention,” she gave a nasty little laugh, “extremely dangerous half-breeds.”
The Slytherin boy stood up, chair scraping across the floor. Sam, next to him, had gone pale. Her fingers were wrapped tightly around her wand.  
“Sit down, Mr.-?”
“I’m leaving,” said the boy, not deigning to give Umbridge his name.  He picked up his bag.  “Maybe I can sit in on an actually useful lesson.  I mean, if I can figure out how to make a pineapple tap dance, I can get it to fly into someone’s face.  At least that’s something.”
“Sit down,” repeated Umbridge.  “I do not know what your classmates have told you, but you, all of you,” she said to the class, “have been frightened into believe that you are likely to meet Dark attacks every other day—”
“We haven’t been frightened into believing anything!” exclaimed Dash, also rising from his seat.  “Our entire city was attacked!  We need—"
“Which was a tragedy.  One that is unlikely to be repeated!  Now, sit down.”
The other Americans stood up.  
“We heard about Cedric Diggory, you know,” said the Slytherin girl, coldly.  “And a lot of the people who attacked us were never caught.”
“We also know about the giant murder snake that apparently lived here,” said the boy.  
“I, for one, can’t believe that wizards are less likely to be murders than any other human,” said Valerie.  “If normal people need to take self-defense classes, I don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to.”
“The government preventing people from learning how to defend themselves is historically a bad sign,” said Sam.  “Of course, slavery is also a bad sign, and you all have been ignoring that for God only knows how long.  There are actual slaves in this school.”
“Wait,” said the Slytherin boy, horrified.  “Are you serious?  Is that what you were talking about before?  Oh my God—"
“Children!” exclaimed Umbridge.  “Your hands are not up.”  
The looks Umbridge got after that outburst were filled with incredulity, not
Parvati Patil raised her hand.  
“Yes?” asked Umbridge.
Harry was beginning to wonder if she was looking for punishment.  
“Isn’t there supposed to be a practical bit in our Defense Against the Dark Arts O.W.L.?”
“As long as you have studied the theory hard enough, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to—”
The room exploded into a flurry of objections, spurred on by the Americans.  
“Who exactly do you think is going to attack you?” shouted Umbridge over the ruckus.  
“I don’t know!” shouted Harry back, even though part of him knew this was a bad idea.  “How about Lord Voldemort?”
Silence.  
“Ten points from Gryffindor, Mr. Potter?”
“Points?” whispered Dash.  No one else spoke.  
The Slytherin boy was looking at Harry with something like hunger in his eyes.  
“Now, let me make a few quite plain.  You have been told that a certain Dark wizard had returned from the dead—”
“He wasn’t dead,” said Harry, “but yeah, he’s returned!”
“Do not make matters worse for yourself, Mr. Potter!” exclaimed Umbridge shrilly.  “As I was saying, you have been informed that a certain Dark wizard is at large once again. This is a lie.”
“It is NOT a lie!  I saw him! I fought him!”
Glee spread across Umbridge’s toad-like face. “Detention, Mr. Potter.  Tomorrow evening.  Five—  What do you think you’re doing?”
“Um,” said the Slytherin boy, who like the rest of the Americans was halfway to the door.  “Leaving. Like we said?”  He hadn’t stopped walking.
“You will do no such thing!  All five of you will be joining Mr. Potter for detention.”
“Pass.”  His eyes flicked towards Harry again.
“Excuse me?”
“We have better things to do than humor someone who’s refusing to do their job,” said Sam.  
The classroom doors slammed shut right in front of the Slytherin boy’s nose, and he took half a step back.  
“Tomorrow evening, at five o’clock, all six of you will join me for detention in my office.  Now.  The rumors of that Dark wizard’s return are lies.  The Ministry guarantees that you are not in danger from any Dark wizard.  If you are still worried, if someone is alarming you with fibs about reborn Dark wizards, come see me outside of class hours, I would like to hear about it.  I am here to help.  I am your friend.  Now, kindly, continue your reading.  Page five, ‘Basics for Beginners.’”
The Americans slunk back to their seats but pulled a variety of colorful transfiguration textbooks from their bags instead of Defensive Magical Theory.
With an air of triumph, Umbridge sat down behind her desk.
Harry stood up.  
“Harry, no!” whispered Hermione, tugging at his sleeve.
Harry ignored her.  (Which was, in all honesty, a stupid move.  Ignoring Hermione rarely had positive consequences.)
(In his defense, the preceding several minutes had been… stressful.)
“So, according to you, Cedric Diggory dropped dead of his own accord, did he?”
“Cedric Diggory’s death was a tragic accid—”
“Just like Amity Park, huh?”
“A tragic accident,” continued Umbridge, voice full of ice.  
“It was murder.”  Harry was shaking.  He felt like he was under a spotlight, and he wanted to be anywhere but here, talking about this.  “Voldemort killed him, and you know it.”
For a second, Harry thought Umbridge would start screaming, but instead her lips curled up into a parody of a smile.  “Come here, Mr. Potter, dear.”
As Harry walked forward, Umbridge started scribbling on a small, pink, piece of paper, angled so that Harry couldn’t see what she was writing.  Something moved out of the corner of his eye, and Harry flinched.  
The…  What were they even doing?  Why were they sitting like that?
“Take this to Professor McGonagall, dear,” said Umbridge, holding out a roll of pink paper.  
Harry took it from her without a word, turned on his heel, threw open the door, and—
Was almost trampled by the Americans all escaping the room at once.  
Dash grabbed him by the upper arm, and soon all six of them were running down the hallway.  It took several seconds for Umbridge to start shrieking, and, by that point, the Slytherin boy had pulled them all into a secret passage that someone who hadn’t been at Hogwarts for even a month shouldn’t know about.  
“Wow,” said Sam.  “You work fast, Danny.”
“Thanks,” said Danny, giving her a thumbs up.  “Got to thank the Bloody Baron, though.”  He paused.  “Still can’t believe that’s his actual name…”
“Sorry about dragging you with us, by the way,” said the Slytherin girl.  “I’m Paulina. This is Danny.  You already know these three, I think?”
“Er,” said Harry, not at all sure how to deal with this situation.  Part of him just wanted to shout.  He was still vibrating with suppressed rage.  
“I didn’t really catch your name in all that, though,” she continued, gesturing behind them.  
“It’s Harry.  Potter.”
It was… interesting, how his name didn’t spark any recognition in them.  At least not at first.  Then Danny stiffened and—
“The poltergeist is coming this way,” he said, mildly.  
“You can tell?” asked Paulina.
“I could always tell.  Why do you think I was always in the bathroom when ghosts were around?”
Valerie scowled, and shot a truly venomous glare at her watch.
“Do you think we can convince him to bug Umbridge?” asked Sam.
Danny shot a look of surprise at her.  Then he smiled.  “Maybe,” he said.  He turned back to Harry.  “It was nice meeting you.  I hope we can talk again sometime.  It sounds like you’ve been through a lot, and, well…”  He shrugged.
Harry suddenly remembered that the Americans were here, for the most part, because their families were dead.
“But you should probably track down Professor McGonagall sooner than later.  I’d bet that Umbridge put a timer on that.  If that’s possible.  Is that possible?”
“I don’t know,” said Harry, suddenly a hundred times more anxious about the paper clenched in his hand.  
“Gosh, imagine if Lancer could do that,” said Dash.
“I’d take Lancer any day,” said Danny.  “He actually tried to teach stuff.  Anyway, I’m going to go head off Peeves.  You might want to go around.  I hear he can be kind of a jerk?”
“Right,” said Harry, walking further down the secret passage, because he had been here for a proper length of time and had learned about it properly.  
… Although he supposed that asking the ghosts was a proper way to go about learning the secret passages.  
No, he had to focus on how to explain getting kicked out of class to Professor McGonagall, not on the weirdest interaction with Slytherins he’d had to date.

Maul: A Broken Evil Retrospective
On a Star Wars Amino I’m in, I had made an introspective on why I feel that Maul, while he is a villain is not whole heartedly evil, but broken.  I took from said Amino post, with a few needed edit tweaks.
Chaotic Evil
Of course given the fact he was a Sith and some of the decisions he’s made, I don’t completely want to negate that in this discussion. If we were to use the alignment chart (lawful good, true neutral, chaotic evil, etc), he would probably fit best in Neutral Evil. From my understanding, Maul would fit Neutral Evil as a lot if what he does has to do with benefiting himself. Even if that means using allies (i.e. Ezra initially) and potentially betraying them (i.e. blinding Kanan once the Inquisitors were dealt with). He’ll follow things as he needs and can be calculating when he needs (like his take over of Mandalore). He’s not spontaneous enough or lacks enough restraint to be Chaotic Evil (like the Joker for instance), nor is he as calculating and “lawful” to be Lawful Evil (like say Thrawn and/or Palpatine). With that said, I’d agree that Maul has a darkness/evil in him considering all of the things he’s done. Obviously, he’s not winning any hero points by killing people like Qui Gon and Satine or blinding and attempting to kill Kanan. 
Onto why I feel he’s broken.
Palpatine: Taken From a Young Age and Molded into what Sidious Wanted
Whether it be Talzin offering Maul as a child in Canon or his mother giving Palpatine Maul as a baby in Legends (Darth Plagueis), Maul was caught in a situation that he really didn’t have much control over. Granted, his life may not have been much better on Dathomir, given how the Nightsisters used their male counterparts, but there’s no telling what kind of life he could have had, had he not been handed over to Palpatine. Maul was molded into a weapon as Darth Sidious’ apprentice. And Maul spent most of his younger years being molded into what Sidious wants. Only to be “cast aside” when he is presumed dead. With Sidious being his only form of human contact/interaction, it’s fair to say that Maul feels a level of rejection/abandonment by the only person he had a bond with.
However, rather than having a level of depression because of it, he’s angry about it. For him that seems to be a common response, along with hatred and arrogance (the latter of which was used to explain how he survived the Phantom Menace). Sidious created a weapon out of Maul. And with that, a character with no real coping mechanism or knowing how to let things go.
A lot of, if not all of, Maul’s issues can be linked back to Sidious in some way. Sidious isn’t exactly Mentor of the Year material. Especially with Maul.  Though that could be chopped up to him being a Sith and very manipulative.  He wasn’t the kindest person to the Zabrak pre or post Phantom Menace (both in canon and Legends). Either way, a lot of Maul’s issues are a direct result of Palpatine’s involvement in his life.
If it weren’t for Sidious, Maul would have a normal life (or whatever that would equate to on Dathomir). He would have had his family, would have been more level headed and maybe less cocky, and he wouldn’t have enraged abandonment issues. The amount of grief, trauma, and hatred would be vastly different
Family: He Lost a Brother and a Mother
Let’s be real, thanks to Sidious, Maul’s lost a brother and a mother (two brothers when you count Feral, though he never got to meet him). By the time Savage came around in Clone Wars, we got to see Maul sort of build his character more than say the Phantom Menace (the novels did too, but I can’t say that everyone’s read them). We also get to see Maul exhibit more emotion where, again, the movie lacks as well as the introduction of his family, Mother Talzin, Feral, and Savage. And while Maul may not have been what you’d call an “affectionate” brother, he does care for Savage to the best of his ability.
Their deaths still haunted him years after the events of the Prequel Trilogy and Clone Wars. These deaths stuck with him psychologically to the point that he is still effected by it in Rebels. Which in turn, may have contributed some to him wanting Ezra as an apprentice (among other factors).
Torture After Loss
In Son of Dathomir after Maul tries to get back at Sidious, he is captured after his last battle with Sidious in Clone Wars (season 5). It starts off with Maul being interrogated and tortured by Sidious. He makes it through without faltering and escapes with the help of the Shadow Collective. That being said, we never really get to see where his mindset is. During Son of Dathomir, he gets a lot done, capturing Dooku and Grievous (taunting Sidious and working with Dooku to fight Obi Wan and a few other Jedi before escaping). However, we don’t get to see the mental toll Savage’s death here. Though with everything going on, I guess there wasn’t time.
Now the reason I bring this up, is because part of me felt like I should and the timing. Prior to Son of Dathomir, Maul had recently lost Savage. At the end, he loses his mother. The torture and the scheming in between shows how he didn’t catch a break. And while he was able to stay strong when he had to, they never really explored how the torture effected him, which one would think he would have been.
Obsession, Insanity, Arrogance: Maul’s Faults
I do feel like I address this point. I’ve already kind of touched on his anger and arrogance (synonymously with cockiness). While training Maul, Sidious didn’t consider how arrogant he had let the Zabrak become (according to Darth Plagueis, the novel). This has Maul’s Achilles Heel since the Phantom Menace. While having a healthy dose of pride never hurt anyone, a healthy dose, Maul dose not possess.
His obsession with getting Obi Wan and Sidious is another issue. This really only pops up after his apparent death in Phantom Menace. Because after that point, Maul finds out that he was replaced by Sidious (with Dooku) and that he was bested by a mere Padawan (Obi Wan). I feel like this obsessive tendency is a combination of his feelings of abandonment and having his ego damaged.
And of course, I feel like Maul’s roughly decade long battle with insanity really didn’t help his psyche. While his sanity was restored thanks to Mother Talzin and Savage, I do feel like that’s caused more harm than good. Something like that had to feel draining after getting his sanity restored. He was sitting on a trash planet and on his own. Along with not having anything from the waist down and forced to manage with what he had. Hatred may have helped keep him alive, but his psyche during those ten years didn’t.
He has a lot of internal conflict in an emotional and mental sense. Unfortunately, these negative emotions, obsession and pride especially, cause him more harm than good.
The Ezra Bond: Feeling a Need to Replicate a Connection, Even if He Approaches it Incorrectly
By the time Rebels rolls around, Maul is older and calmer (though still proud). Obviously, he still wants to get back at the Empire for what they (more specifically Sidious) did to him. And at first, Ezra seemed like someone that he could use. This is an element that is prevalent, however, not the only aspect of their relationship.
According to Sam Witwer, Maul’s VA, Maul did have a (platonic) fondness for Ezra. And on top of wanting to make Ezra his apprentice, Maul wanted to emulate a sense of brotherhood between him and Ezra. For example, his phrase in Visions and Voices when Maul says “...We can walk that path together. As friends. As brothers.” How he said it shows how he does miss Savage and wants that family back.
That being said, how he approached this connection could be seen as manipulative and more than likely one sided.  Sure, over the course of Twilight of the Apprentice, Ezra grows on Maul, to the point where Maul wants to make him his apprentice and has an appreciation for Ezra. However, his pride and lack of planning cause a rift between them and there was a lot of mistrust on Ezra’s part, not that one could blame him.
Subsequent episodes show that Maul is hellbent on making Ezra his apprentice through any means possible. 
Maul lost Savage and Talzin, and Ezra was one of the first few people to trust him in years.  I think it’s safe to say that, in Maul’s mind, Ezra gave him a sense of belonging or connection.
Maul’s need for a connection could be interpreted as him trying to find something good in life. However, manipulative tendencies and how he was brought up, hinder him doing that in a healthy and positive way. With Savage, he didn’t need to do anything as they both had a similar plan when they met (Savage being indoctrinated into the ways of the Sith). But subsequent relationships (i.e. Ezra), Maul is at a bit of a disadvantage emotionally and morally. 
Sure, he could relate to Ezra since they both lost people they care for because of the Empire (and by extent Sidious), but manipulation and harming Ezra’s allies hinder a smoother connection. Even if a force bond was eventually made. Ezra, arguably, could have been what he needed for what he wanted and a possible change/redemption/blank slate only for things not to entirely go as plan.
Could Maul Have Something Along the Lines of PTSD?
Now, I could do a mini theory about this as I’ve speculated that with another character before. It’d be an interesting way to look at Maul’s psychology. It’s one last little avenue I thought I’d address before closing this post out. Of course, it’s worth noting that I am not a Psychology major (as interesting as psychology is). I have, however, done some research.
I do believe that Maul, to some degree, may have PTSD. But instead of exhibiting panic/anxiety, depression or easily startled, Maul has more aggressive tendencies and is easy to anger. He still lives with the trauma of the death of his brother (and mother) and flashbacks of that and other events in his life, I’m sure he’d be effected by.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while I certainly think that Maul is no hero, his life experiences certainly effected what kind of person he became. Being raised as a weapon, abandoned, and tortured would bring any normal person way down. And because that was all Maul knew, I don’t think that entirely means he’s evil. Rather, he’s a character who’s been used and abused to the point that he’s mentally and psychologically broken. Unfortunately, that effects his life in ways that make him arrogant, hateful and obsessive. And when he tries to build bonds later in life, he doesn’t know how to in a way that, while laced in trauma, has manipulative and one sided undertones.
That being said, I feel like I should round out this introspective with a little positive. While he’s definitely been through a lot, Maul is pretty resilient all things considered. He’s cheated death and managed to live through a lot of abuse. The fact that he could keep bouncing back shows just hoe resilient and determined the character is.

I really enjoy your thought-provoking metas on Elrond and Elros and find myself agreeing with you a lot. I have issues with certain popular fanons of the twins, but I tend to be insecure about countering and potentially disrespecting discussions on childhood trauma... However I do feel like their complex cultural identity and the theme of mortality and immortality that Tolkien said was central to his Legendarium aren’t given enough focus. The exploration on what it means to be Peredhil.

Regarding the first ask: i wouldn't worry too much about countering fandom norms with this though, since unlike some subjects.....cough.....that will remain nameless because there's more than i can remember atm, this one doesn't really suffer from like....people vociferously defending the popular viewpoint against other less common ones, as much as people like.....not considering that there is any other possible viewpoint at all and just passively passing along the most surface-level fanon without giving it much thought. I think plenty of them would have no argument with you if you argued this viewpoint, and in fact might enjoy it a lot! They just haven't seemed to have noticed it at all on their own for some reason lol.
Regarding your second ask: canon is quite patchy, dry, and ambivalent in most places (even if it's very vibrantly full of Explanatory Emotions And Personality in other places -- The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen in Appendix A for example) so there's a lot of unconnected dots to connect in a LOT of different directions, and the dots i've connected are in large part formed by a lifetime of scrounging for mixed-heritage experiences, as a mixed-race/culture/nationality person myself. AND a lifetime of wholly personal fixation on immorality stories and general hatred of those innumerable eliding sour-grapes platitudes about immortality vs mortality in children's fantasy, not to mention a lot of (also quite personal) 'uhhhh......really??' about the fact that people were so ready to believe WHETHER OR NOT YOU GOT TO BE IMMORTAL OR GOT TO ESCAPE THE CURSED WORLD would just naturally (rather than arguably, for very specific personal reasons and loyalties that you may or may not have) be way less of a factor (or not a factor at all!!!??) in your fate-decision than what part of your heritage you ~vibed with more, and that the one you vibed with more fundamentally negated the other one. (ftr, many (though not all) mixed people i know, myself included, consider their identity to be primarily Mixed, as in their mixed-ness itself, is more prominent/salient a personal identity, than either of their separate heritages are. and there are like 426284 not-conclusive but still very suggestive pieces of evidence that Elrond feels the same and is also seen by outsiders as the same. However a very funny thing is that if we are mixed x/y, we also often feel very x when among a population of y, and feel very y when among a population of x. Fandom get on that! Peredhil feeling very human while among elves, and very elf while among humans??? Ideal????) Some people who......ugh.......ARE VALID I GUESS...........focus on uh certain other elements of Elrond and Elros's story (that I personally find kind of boring) to extrapolate their characters from, and I know those dots and the connections between them are as canon as the dots I personally focus on connecting instead LOL. But I'm of course extremely gleefully glad/prideful about people agreeing with ME! :P
