The hint of a shape emerges. Kas closes their eyes, left hand on the lowest keyboard as their right pulls the switch. Upstairs, the crowd has fallen silent. Gilbert and Rae finally stop sniping at each other, and Kas feels more than hears Gilbert come up to stand behind them. “There,” they say. “Look.” They move to the next switch, and the shape in the pool, almost human now, falters. It turns liquid again, then gas, then solid, dripping light from its aethereal body. Kas presses a key, then another. The shape rises. The connection has been made. Another switch. A flicker. The quintessence collapses in a wave; occluding light briefly obscures the glass wall. It leaves streaks of luminescent liquid behind, snaking their way down to the pool as it starts to swirl once more. “Stop!” Gilbert shouts. “Turn it off!”
A teaser from my short story 'The Light Organ', which is going to be published in Aether Beyond the Binary, a queer anthology from @duckprintspress.
You can get it by backing the Kickstarter campaign for the anthology, where my short story is just one of 17 incredible contributions, all featuring characters outside of the gender binary and more. It's on right now and we need your help to reach the funding goal!

It’s been a year since the last time Duck Prints Press (the indie press founded by fancreators to help other fancreators publish their original work) called for applicants, and we are absolutely thrilled and super excited to announce that today is the day! We are recruiting author contributors for our next anthology!
Aether Beyond the Binary is an all-new aetherpunk anthology that will feature 20 short stories each up to 7,500 words long that re-imagine modern or near-future Earth as a place where aether is real and the technology runs on this mysterious, magical element. Specifically, stories will focus on the stories of characters who are outside the gender binary (agender, genderfluid, nonbinary, etc.) living in aetherpunk settings on contemporary-esque Earth—a world like ours, but different because of the advent of the availability magic to power technology.
Has mankind known about magic since the dawn of evolution? Was aether discovered literally yesterday? How does the availability of aether as a power source impact society, politics, economics, culture, technology, sexuality, gender? We want to hear your ideas! For this project, we’re seeking 10 fanfiction authors who have not published their work with the Press before and who are interested in making the transition to publishing their original work! (The other 10 spots are reserved for authors who have previously worked with us.) New applicants must have published fanfiction before—the full guidelines are in our rules, linked below.
This post is not a call for story submissions! Duck Prints Press runs anthology recruitment on a zine-like model: we ask that prospective authors submit a writing sample (750 to 1500 words) and an up-to-400-word story pitch aligned with Aether Beyond the Binary’s themes. You must write and post fanfiction to apply to these anthologies, but all stories in Aether Beyond the Binary must be 100% original! Selected authors who complete their stories will be paid a minimum of $75 US for their work; we will seek additional money through crowdfunding to supplement this, with a maximum earning potential of $600 US.
Interested in applying? We’d love to hear from you! Make sure you familiarize with all the rules first…

…and more!
Applications open today, January 5th, 2023, and recruitment will stay open until either we receive 150 applications or January 20th, 2023. So, review the rules, hit us up with questions (or you can e-mail us at [email protected]), prepare your shiniest writing sample, set your creativity on crafting an awesome tale of an outside-the-binary main character living on aetherpunk Earth, and then…
APPLY NOW!

@a-bit-of-a-queer-one i will ignore the chibnall dogging because you have other good takes (and generally people should engage in polite discourse with opposing opinions as long as it's not some morally reprehensible "should these types of people have rights?" debates) because THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE SEEN ABOUT CROWLEY AND AZIRAPHALE AND IT GENUINELY FEELS LIKE THE CLOSEST I'VE EVER COME TO DESCRIBING MYSELF AND THESE CHARACTERS WHO MEAN SO MUCH TO ME THANK YOU

I feel like I should preface my BAKK headcanons with:
I hc Kenma as genderfluid, and they prefer they/them to be used if people don't know their current pronouns. They usually wear hoodies (usually stolen but they have their own collection of hoodies with particular textures that help when their senses are out of whack) and sweatpants around the house, but when they have to go to official stuff they have a whole closet full of fancy stuff. (Also, yes, I am aware this isn't related I just wanted theirs and Kuroo's Paragraphs to be similar lengths don't mind me)
I hc Kuroo as cis male, but he literally doesn't give a shit. Like, his pronouns are he/him, but if you call him she or they he doesn't give a shit. Likewise, he wears whatever he wants, regardless of what section it comes from. He does this partially to make his partners more comfortable and partially because he just likes dressing like that. It cracks him up when people see him with his partners and he's wearing makeup and they think he's the trans one, when in fact it is every single one of his partners but him.
I hc Akaashi as nonbinary. They use they/them pronouns and they struggle a lot with their gender. On a base level, it makes sense to them- they can't fathom being any other gender. But it's difficult because they didn't grow up in the most supportive environment- so they aren't really comfortable in their own skin or their expression. They default to sweaters and jeans or tighter sweatpants.
I hc Bokuto as genderqueer. He IDs as a guy- but not a man. Just a kinda-man. He uses he/xe. Xe are generally pretty loud about his support of the LGBTQ+ community, but the news mostly attributes it to him being in a poly relationship with 2 trans partners, even though xe aren't exactly quiet about xir gender.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built review
Tumblr media
5/5 stars Recommended if you like: soft sci-fi, novellas, character studies, cozy stories, The Singing Hills Cycle I held off reading this book for a while and now I'm not sure why I did. It's right in line with the kind of stories, and particularly novellas, that I enjoy. I'll definitely be picking up A Prayer for the Crown-Shy and look forward to other Monk & Robot books. The story follows Dex, a monk, as they gain the itch for something beyond the life they've built for themself. Specifically, they desire to hear crickets sing, and it nags at them no matter how busy they keep. Thus begins Dex's transition to a tea monk. The idea of a tea monk was fascinating to me and it was interesting to see what that role entailed and how it worked. I liked how the author took the traditions of tea and comfort and lending a shoulder and transformed them in this book. Another thing I liked was the little tidbits of culture we got from Dex as they traveled around bringing tea to people. Dex themself is in a bit of an odd place in this book. They can't figure out why nothing is satisfying to them anymore and are struggling to fill that niche in their life. One of the core questions they keep returning to is why their work isn't fulfilling them when the work itself is fulfilling. Mosscap is the robot Dex encounters and is a whole personality of its own. Mosscap was chosen as the first robot to make contact with humans since the Transition, when robots stood up from their jobs and told humans they were done and to leave them alone to enjoy nature. Now they are testing the waters to see how things have progressed (into a fantastic utopia, actually). Mosscap is endlessly curious about humans, like it is about most things, particularly insects. Mosscap can be quite funny and at times drops some very philosophical answers to questions posed by Dex. This is definitely a low-stakes story and a very cozy sci-fi. There's no drama, no world-ending/life-saving stakes, just tea and musings about the oneself and the world and their place in it.

The fact that Holt has Dyslexia makes this even funnier for some reason. Btw Holt & Dakota have matching pfps, with the background being their gender and sexuality. Holt is trans & Polysexual while Dakota is Nonbinary & Demipansexual. Yes they do have a crush on each other, but it takes a while for either of them to notice since they’ve known each other forever.

an elf who transitioned after the rest of their family died or returned to Valinor, crossing the Sea 1000+ years later and knowing that none of the people they're reuniting with will recognize them and their new name. is there some kind of ceremony for re-introducing yourself? or can elves just recognize you by your soul anyway? ...or, alt: would you fuck with people by asking for gossip about yourself to see what they'll say before telling them who you are? elves with 1000+ year transitions pls
Great thoughts, anon. So many wonderful options to play around with there, we love it.

Contributor Spotlights: Tris Lawrence and Annabeth Lynch
Welcome to She Wears the Midnight Crown and He Bears the Cape of Stars, two brand-new anthologies that share a common theme – masquerades – but tell different types of stories – wlw in She Wears the Midnight Crown and mlm in He Bears the Cape of Stars. These collections are the latest titles from Duck Prints Press, the indie publisher founded by fans to publish original works by fan creators, and they’re crowdfunding NOW, only on Seed & Spark!
Curious about the collections? Well, here’s a sneak peek of the works of two of our creators!

He Bears the Cape of Stars Contributor Spotlight: Tris Lawrence
Biography: Tris Lawrence has been writing since she was a child, filling notebooks with the worlds, dreams, and voices from inside her head. She declared in sixth grade that she wanted to be a writer, promptly started drafting her first novel in seventh grade, and never looked back.
Tris has always been fascinated by the way people work: how their relationships fit together, how they interact socially, how they learn and discover. She has read avidly her entire life, devouring mysteries, romances, science fiction, and fantasy novels, and as an adult still loves all of these genres, as well as reading YA constantly. Her favorite stories center on people who are learning or discovering new things, and coming-of-age stories top that list, which is how the school of Pine Hills University came to be. She wants to share stories of people who are learning how to relate to each other, how to adult, how to college, and how to just be. She hopes to share stories about diverse characters with representation of everything she wishes she could have read growing up, and she hopes that these stories will touch the lives and hearts of those who read them.
When not writing, Tris is a wife, a mother (to two children, a cat, and a dog), a knitter, a system administrator, a black belt in taekwondo, an avid reader, and a music aficionado. Sleep, she claims, is optional.

Story Title: Delta
Teaser:
Ellis tried to imagine any of the people at work playing the game. Maybe someone down in IT, or one of the folks in Marketing… he couldn’t imagine any of the executives he worked with, or the financial people. On the other hand, he supposed no one would expect him to play, either. While Ellis would bet money that none of the people he worked with—or the other parents and teachers he had to deal with for his family—played Delta, he could be wrong.
It’s a risk I’m willing to take. Delta is the only place I feel like me. I spend so much time feeling uncomfortable in my own skin, I just want to have something here to remind me every day that I’m still me under the hood. I feel real in Delta. More real than reality. I want to be able to see the ink and have that touchstone for myself.
Ellis cleaned up his office, neatly stacking papers for tomorrow and writing out a list of tasks that needed to be done first thing. He responded to the one email that came in, then shut down his computer for the day. Anyone else who needed him here could wait.
Sasha’s message came in just as Ellis was retwisting the low bun in his hair. He stuck the hair pin in to hold it in place, then looked at his phone.
You don’t feel real?

Story Title: Silver Secrets
Teaser:
“How did you know it was me?”
Kanna shook her head. “I will always know you. You are the one thing that is never lost to me.”
Thalia’s eyes were still bright with unshed tears when she leaned into Kanna, their lips brushing. “You always were too smart for your own good,” she whispered against Kanna’s mouth.
Kanna pulled away, putting her hands on Thalia’s cheeks. “I need you to tell me right now. You didn’t do this, did you?”
“What? Of course not. How could you think that?” Thalia gasped, eyes wide.
“I don’t. But if you did, you can’t lie to me. I need to know now. Before the cops get here and start looking. I will always protect you unconditionally. You know that.”
“You saw me through my mask, can you not see me through my words?”
There was a long pause as Kanna stroked her cheeks. After a moment she said, “I see you, Thalia.”

Day 4 of trying to get you invested in my original book "Bound By Name" by posting short character intros!
"Sprout", a person made entirely of plants and a great martial artist. Sure they might have magic, but it's important to not rely on it entirely. It's not a coincidence they're the head guard and trainer for the Palace, for their wisdom and skill are both irreplaceable.
Random notes: Taught William and many of the Palace guards how to fight. Also I haven't really put much thought into their gender but since they're literally made of plants I don't assume they'd have one.
