knuckles comes down with an ancient disease that he'll recover from but it'll be a while, and he doesn't want anyone to catch and spread it because it would be devastating to the unprepared immune systems of the average person. the only candidates that can come up to take care of him are robots (he hates that) or shadow (hates that too but less) because of his immunity to disease.

knuckles expects shadow to be mean to him or lord newfound power over him in this state, but he's surprised to find that shadow just... does his job and does it well. he brings a bunch of supplies and respects knuckles' wishes with how he wants the illness to be treated (he prefers traditional echidna medicine, he knows the medicines work and he wants to keep those traditions alive).

the first day, shadow is fucking around on his phone to pass the time and knuckles gets paranoid and demands to know what he's doing. he's just watching youtube videos comparing how motorcycles sound. knuckles continues to be paranoid about shadow being there because he brought tech and is close to rouge. the whole time, shadow has to be within line of sight for knuckles in order for him to feel safe

it's annoying for both of them but also a bonding experience and trust exercise and they both come out of it knowing each other better and respecting each other a little more =)
