A lot of femslash fics are bite-sized. And those are fun! But sometimes you want a fic to really sink your teeth into. So here are a handful of Tolkien femslash fics that are at least 4k words in length.
Come Home to Chaos (Get a Crush On a Queen) by ncfan - 8.5k - Arwen/Firiel of Gondor - Arwen came home to Imladris at the end of winter, and found her home in chaos.
Do I Hurt To Hold? by Anonymous - 5.2k - Galadriel/Melian - Melian makes her a promise: “I will train you. For one year, you will be mine. Your power—your body, mind, and spirit—will be mine. And by the end of that year, you will be stronger than you could possibly imagine.”
It's the Secret That We Keep by Loriand_Lost - 17.7k - Galadriel/Luthien - In Doriath, Galadriel meets the love of her life.  She also meets another of her great loves - the Princess Luthien, daughter of Melian the enchantress and skilled in her own right.
Little Tenderness by batshape - 4.1k - f!Feanor/Nerdanel - Istarnië, she had said, and again and again. Istarnië, Istarnië. I can beg.
The Nameless Black of a Name by Ias - 8.1k - Finduilas/Nienor - The body which lies beneath the Haudh-en-Elleth does not have a name. Finduilas wanders the wilderness in its stead, and there meets someone as lost as she is.
need a bad girl ('cause the bad boys just don't cut it) (series) by @swanmaids  - 5k - Curufin’s wife/Luthien - a prisoner, her jailer, and a knife.
of all the stars, the fairest by whatiwouldnotgive - 7.2k - Arwen/Eowyn - And with that, the pieces of this fanciful puzzle they’ve been creating fall into place.  It’s the turning of a page, the changing of a season. Eowyn could laugh, giddily, at how foolish they’ve both been.
Quicksilver by clothono - 26.4k - Indis/Miriel - "Míriel has recovered herself," Indis said. "She has rested long and well in the Halls of Mandos, and misses now the craft of her hands, the light of the Trees—have I guessed right?"
Scraps of dark in a starstrewn night by Solanaceae - 5.2k - Luthien/Thuringwethil -    Thuringwethil sees the outline of the hook and rises still to the bait, unable to resist the provocation. “Prove yourself worthy of my help." // Luthien tells a story to earn Thuringwethil's aid.
What the Waver Gave Me by me! - 27k - Finduilas/Nienor - Finduilas had never thought she had been saved for a reason, until she found the woman in the river.

Favourite Female Tolkien Character Poll - Round 2, Match 13
Berúthiel
A queen of Gondor remembered for her cats. From a note in Unfinished Tales:
She was the nefarious, solitary, and loveless wife of Tarannon, twelfth King of Gondor and first of the ‘ship-kings,’ who took the crown in the name of Falastur (‘Lord of the Coasts’), and was the first childless king. Berúthiel lived in the King’s House in Osgiliath, hating the sounds and smells of the sea and the house that Tarannon built below Pelargir ‘upon arches whose feet stood deep in the wide waters of Ethir Anduin’; she hated all making, all colours and elaborate adornment, wearing only black and silver and living in bare chambers, and the gardens of the house in Osgiliath were filled with tormented sculptures beneath cypresses and yews.
She had nine black cats and one white [my note: sonehow this feels like a metaphor/imagery for Sauron and the Ringwraiths], her slaves, with whom she conversed, or read their memories, setting them to discover all the dark secrets of Gondor, so that she knew those things ‘that men wish most to keep hidden’, setting the white cat to spy on the black, and tormenting them. No man in Gondor dared to touch them; all were afraid of them, and cursed when they saw them pass.
…her name was erased from the Book of the Kings…and King Tarannon had her set on a ship alone with her cats and set adrift on the sea before a north wind. The ship was last seen flying past Umbar under a sickle moon, with a cat at the masthead and another as a figure-head on the prow.
Fíriel of Gondor
The last surviving child of King Ondoher of Gondor, under Númenorean law she would have been the heir to the throne. She married Arvedui Last-king of Arnor, and he sought to claim the throne of Gondor in her name. He was refused, and the line of kings of Gondor ended two generations later, while the kingdom of Arnor ended with Arvedui.
Apparently no one argued that Fíriel herself rather than her husband should inherit the throne.

For all the male domination of the line of the Rulers of Númenor and Gondor, let’s not forget that Elendil, and thus Aragorn, are actually directly descended from the female line of the House of Elros, via his great-great-granddaughter Silmariën.
AND let’s not forget that Aragorn’s only connection to Anárion’s line (the actual line of Gondorian Kings) is through his female ancestor Fíriel - who actually is the one who joined the two lines by marrying Isildur’s descendant Arvedui.
Aragorn would never have had any claim to the throne, let alone existed, if it weren’t for those two very important women. The Kings did NOT do it all by themselves.
I just love that Tolkien wrote it like that, instead of having Aragorn be descended entirely from royal men.

Arvedui's death by drowning in Forochel is actually very unfair because he follows all the Tolkien Fantasy Rules(TM) and then dies because, nope! This time, real-life rules applied!
Arvedui, king of Arthedain (part of Arnor), was a Man, and he listened to the elves, which is generally a good idea in Tolkien's world! What's more, he listened to Cirdan('s people), which is literally always a good idea in Tolkien's world except for this one time.
Yes, the Lossoth locals warn him about sailing in such dangerous, icy conditions, but these are Cirdan's highly experienced elven mariners on elven ships who, after all, arrived here safely. And Arvedui is urgently needed back with his people to fight the Witch-king of (quite literally at this point) Angmar.
But no! Fantasy rules are out for five minutes and real-life rules are in, and Arvedui drowns (along other people and two palantiri), the last king of Arthedain.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 2
Narmeleth vs Faramir (son of Ondoher)
Narmeleth:
Elf of Lindon & later the Gwaith-i-Mirdain; crafted & entrapped by a minor ring of power (Lord of the Rings Online character)
Narmelleth!!! I mean. She's got it all. Corrupted by the Gift Lord, Ring-forger, Bane of Fornost, Earnur's Worstie, COOL OUTFIT, Redemption Arc we didn't start the fire
she actually managed to destroy the lesser ring of power "Annatar" had used to corrupt her, which is like, SO impressive considering how long she had been under its influence. She also fought Mordirith (the steward of Angmar) and his new champion Mordrambor (a universally loathed NPC that everyone rightfully hates for personal reasons) single-handedly!! I don't mean alone, the player character was there, but I mean she did it single-handed. with one hand. she lost a hand and kept fighting. and WON!!!
Faramir (son of Ondoher):
The younger son of King Ondoher of Gondor, killed in battle along with his father and older brother. Also a character in Lord of the Rings Online.
more blorboganda later but! he's been hanging out on dagorlad as a ghost bc he snuck out to join the fighting against the wainriders with his dad and brother and they all got killed. really wants to help the rangers of ithilien once he gets out of the 'ghost who had to hang out at torture temple for a thousand years or so' fog
propaGANDA please vote for Faramir "Namesake of the Faramir we know" son of Ondoher he's got it all. Younger brother, couldn't stay behind while his family fought Mordor, rode out in disguise (sound familiar?) but died TRAGICALLY in the arms of the proto-Rohirric Commander. this is not even touching all the stuff he gets into in adaptations. Faramir I supremacy
OK no I can wax poetical on Faramir I Son of Ondoher because his is a tragedy that sets in motion the end of the Kings of Gondor (for an age or two. idk on specific but). Faramir I second son of Ondoher is not content to stay at home, doing his duty, following orders etc. etc. because he LOVES his dad and his big brother SO much. And the thing is, he really really shouldn't go. Hindsight 20/20 and all that but if he leaves there is NO ONE who can take the throne from his dad's direct line (because the Gondorian Council are punks and decide his cool sister Firiel and her extremely cool husband Arvedui can't have it on account of [handwaves] honestly). But the armies they're facing off against are serious business! They're really outmatching Gondor here. They straight up already fought his grandfather King Calimehtar, iand are back for round 2. So what does precious Faramir (I) do? He pulls the OG Eowyn, babey (and let's not forget parallels, PARALLELS about following your father (figure) and brother to war, right? she marries the NAMESAKE of this guy, incredibly cool mirroring here) and gets a disguise and rides with the Rohirrim-before-Eorl (some adaptations call this the Eotheod) to go help. Here's where things get EXTRA angsty HIS FATHER AND BROTHER ARE DEAD. He doesn't know because he's with the Eotheod, but like. The Wainriders killed them. And the Eotheod does help rout the rest of them and eventually, Earnil II future Throne-thief (but it's not his fault) gets the final victory BUT not before sweet noble Faramir is run through with a spear by the chieftain of the Wainriders and DIES IN THE ARMS OF A COMMANDER OF THE EOTHEOD. Like. That's a specific detail we have. Blorbo Blorbamir at LEAST didn't die alone and was discovered to be the prince there. So. Mr. Horse Leader gets to give the news to everyone about the poor guy that died in his arms being the son of the king. But oops! The King and brother are already dead so. Technically the King of Gondor died in his arms. What a day for him, right? Anyway this is still about Faramir who (in the LoTRO adaptation) feels such guilt that he HANGS AROUND AS A GHOST REGRETTING HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE DOWNFALL OF GONDOR. Tragicest blorbo. Regret. Precious guy. Vote Faramir I

Fíriel | Women of Arda - Ladies of Gondor | Part 3 of 6
Fíriel was born the third child of King Ondoher of Gondor in T.A 1896 and a direct descendant of Anárion. In T.A 1940, her father made an alliance with King Araphant of Arthedain and she married his son, Arvedui. Four years later, her father and two elder brothers were killed fighting the Wainriders in the Disaster of the Morannon.
Arvedui argued that according to the laws of Númenor, which permitted daughters to inherit the kingship, and because he was the heir of Anárion’s brother Isildur, that he should be made king of Gondor. This claim was refused and instead Eärnil, a distant relative of Fíriel, was made king. His son, Eärnur, would be the last king of Gondor until the return of the king in T.A 3019.
It is unknown what became of Fíriel in the fall of Arthedain, but her son Aranarth became the first Chieftain of the Dúnedain. Importantly, it was through her relation to Anárion and her husband’s relation to Isildur that their descendant, Aragorn, was able to become King of the Reunited Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.

That trouble when actually one of the parts of the legendarium that interests you the most are the fucking ROTK appendices i.e. most of the Third Age Gondorian Kings.
The fall of the Kings, and the rise of the Stewarts, that’s all fascinating stuff but barely any fics on it. Also it leads you to develop some reaaally specific headcanons.
Like one of my crack-ish OTP is Firiel of Gondor/Eärnil and I think I’ll stand by it until the end. (no but really it adds an awful lot of irony). I don’t see them as star-crossed lovers, that would be boring and cliche. Rather they were lovers at some point, but it never went anywhere, so they separated on pretty good terms. Eärnil got married. And Firiel was promised to Arvedui. I just love the parallel it draws between the two man. I really love Arvedui okay. Seems an upopular opinion among the fandom but I love my disaster child. The main thing about Arvedui is that he was unlucky his whole life. That and a lack of certain obvious qualities... Qualities that Eärnil actually has in spades, but we’ll get to that. So Arvedui is basically a disaster magnet, and it made him bitter, which led to general resentment against the universe, and of course you end up digging your own grave.
But really just imagine being called Arvedui just because some fucker had the good idea to prophecize that you’ll be the last of your line. That’s being sent into life with failure written all over your face.
So Arvedui. Failure of a man.
And on the other side, Eärnil who has luck, charisma, everything Arvedui lacks. Basically  “ For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” And ends up being the fucking King of Gondor.
And Arvedui knows that and probably knows about Firiel and Eärnil’s affair, but there’s really nothing he can say.
Also I imagine, for someone like Firiel raised in probably the most powerful kingdom in Middle Earth at the moment, marrying Arvedui is a mésalliance. She’s dong him a favour and knows it. And probably despised Arthedain and Arvedui to the end of her life.
Arvedui and Firiel’s marriage was not a happy one, though both were “professionals” and kept the appearances. Also Arvedui has already a lot of problem with his self-esteem, Firiel definitely did not help, not that I blame her.
She ended up resenting Eärnil a bit, because well Arvedui’s claim is what it is, but she hoped she would get the kingship for her son, Araphant. Ultimately Eärnil also took that from her.
Actually I have also some extended headcanons that would account for why Gondor ended up discarding the Numenorian rule of succession in favor of a strict male-male succession, but that’s for another post I guess.
Also another interesting thing is the whole Arvedui/Eärnil thread, reagarding Aragorn. Because the obvious parallel to draw would be with Arvedui. Except that Aragorn has a better claim, and presents it a lot better (what with him being Elendil’s heir, not Isildur’s and that often overlooked). But Aragorn is a bit of an Eärnil bis. Victorious captain becoming King almost by right of conquest, after defeating two armies, one being the Southrons, and saving the kingdom’s ass??? Gee I wonder who could it be ?

do you have any good female fics to rec?
DO I. LOL. Putting this immediately under a cut because there are a lot! There are so many talented writers in this fandom who do ENORMOUS justice to female characters, both original and book-based. Couple of blog recs at the bottom too!
(I'm assuming this is asking for Tolkien fanfic since that's mostly what I'm on about these days, but if you'd rather see Mass Effect or Dragon Age I can do that too.)
I'm glad you asked! φ(* ̄0 ̄)
I'm going to keep all of these to 1 rec per author just so we don't get totally out of control here.
Forging Gold by @swanmaids ft. Curufin's wife, Dwarf OCs. Heather is an amazing source of female character fic in this fandom; she has well-developed OCs for all of Feanor's daughters-in-law and treats canon female characters with such care and love. Absolutely recommend checking out the rest of her stuff!
Prick a Finger, Cut Your Hand by @welcomingdisaster ft. Indis, Miriel. A really great look at the dynamic between these two. Lena has lots of other good takes on female Tolkien characters too!
Friendship and Stern Demand by @polutrope ft. Elwing. Fantastic exploration of what the communications between Elwing and Maedhros might have looked like!
Untitled by @outofangband ft. Aerin, Morwen. Nelyo focuses a lot on the human characters so if you want to read more about what the mortal women went through in the First Age, definitely browse through their blog!
Abide, Abound by Elleth ft. Arwen, Tauriel. Elleth also has lots of works centering on female Tolkien characters.
And by their blazing signify that a great princess falls, but doth not die by TheLionInMyBed ft. Elwing. One of my favorite takes on Elwing's suicide.
Keeper of Kings by batshape ft. Lalwen. What did Lalwen get up to in Middle-earth? Seeing a lot of people die, for one thing.
Into the Heart of a Fey Thing by @amethysttribble ft. Aredhel, Galadriel, Luthien. Fun "behind-the-scenes" look at some adventures with these three!
A Fish Hook, an Open Eye by simaetha ft. Elwing, f!Maglor. Fascinating AU take on a meeting between Elwing and Maglor prior to the Third Kinslaying.
The Sleep of Flowers by Innin ft. Galadriel, Melian. Very beautiful scene, and plenty of other female-centric works by Innin!
Light Words About Nothing by Margo_Kim ft. Dis, Belladonna. I ship it.
Elwing's Strategy by lifeisyetfair ft. Elwing. Another great take on Elwing at the Third Kinslaying.
Out of Dreams, Into the Sun by solanaceae ft. Miriel, Indis.
Games and Fantasy by Genesis_Grey ft. Arwen, Eowyn. Ohh it captures that chivalric WLW so well.
Over the Unclear Eyes of Memory by Loriand_Lost ft. Anaire, Aredhel. Addresses Anaire's complicated feelings about Fingolfin's return to Valinor. This author also has a number of other great female-centric fics, highly recommend!
The Carriage Held but Just Ourselves by @starspray ft. Luthien, Elwing, Arwen. Amazing look at the line of Thingol's relationship with death. This author also has a whole series on Lalwen and an OFC!
Before the Breath of Storm by tinnurin ft. Dis, Dwarf OC. "Behind-the-scenes" look at the Dwarves before the battle of Azanulbizar.
This Now, This Us by crownlessliestheking ft. Indis, Miriel. Indis and Miriel talk after Miriel's return to Valinor.
The Tapestry by Zdenka ft. Thedowyn, Miriel. The ghost of Miriel Serinde offers some aid. This author also has a lot of female-centric works!
Not Undevoted by SatiricalDraperies ft. Galadriel, Melian.
Winter Sea by Tallulah ft. Finduilas, OFC. Finduilas had a girlfriend in the Falas. Another author with a great selection of female-centric works.
The Hunt by @cuarthol ft. Amarie. Amarie is trans and closeted in Valinor, but Finrod understands.
Come Home to Chaos (Get a Crush on a Queen) by ncfan ft. Arwen, Firiel. When Firiel of Gondor takes refuge in Rivendell, Arwen takes an interest.
Do I Hurt to Hold? by Anonymous ft. Galadriel, Melian. A darker look at their relationship.
That Time Elanor Gardner Had A Crush On Her Employer by Anonymous ft. Arwen, Elanor.
All My Shadows Fade by amyfortuna ft. Arwen, OFC. Unsent letter from a female friend of Arwen's as her wedding to Aragorn approaches. This author is also a good one to look at for more female-centric fic!
Orlaya by yeaka ft. Arwen, Tauriel. Cute!
Of All the Stars, the Fairest by whatiwouldnotgive ft. Arwen, Eowyn.
Or They Would Go On Aching Still by Farasha ft. Arwen, Tauriel. Oh, the grief!
Berrypicking Time by swamp_diamonds ft. Finduilas, Nienor.
Things They Don't Talk About by eris_of_imladris ft. Findis. Findis and Feanor have a complicated relationship.
Easily Sever What Never was One by vauquelin ft. Haleth. If you like Halenthir at all as a ship, you'll like this.
The One With All The Birds by clothono ft. Elwing, Nerdanel. I've said it before I'll say it again--my favorite Elwing fic.
Greensleeves by bravelittlscrib ft. Nerdanel. Little scenes of Nerdanel's life and her relationships.
Emerie by the_artifice_of_eternity ft. Erendis, Ancalime. Ancalime's last visit with her mother before taking the throne.
In the Family by arriviste ft. Celebrian, Galadriel.
At the Water's Edge by crackinthecup ft. Elwing, Idril.
And that's what I've got for you right now, I hope that helps! I would also advise checking out the blogs @tolkien-heroines and @sapphictolkien both of which focus on female characters in Tolkien's work. Happy reading, anon! ♪(^∇^*)

the line of elros ♚ royalty of gondor ♚ headcanon disclaimer
After the death of King Calimehtar, the Wainriders once again began to attack Gondor. Calimehtar’s heir Ondoher struggled to repel them, especially as his cousins, the descendants of his ancestor Telumehtar’s second son, began to turn the court against him and advocate a lord of their line replace him as King if he could not defeat this enemy.           Thus Ondoher was eager to ally himself with Araphant of Arnor when he reached out to end the long estrangement between the two sister kingdoms. Together the two kings realized that a single evil power was coordinating the assaults upon their kingdoms, and they formed an alliance against their mutual enemies. Araphant’s wife Laerdil befriended Ondoher’s wife Lelyariel, a merchant’s daughter elevated to Queen when Ondoher fell in love with her, and his daughter Fíriel. With her consent, the queens arranged a marriage between Laerdil’s son Arvedui and Lelyariel’s daughter Fíriel, symbolizing a reunion of the two realms.           Unfortunately, the alliance between Gondor and Arnor proved fruitless, as neither kingdom could spare help for the other. Arthedain was assailed by the Witch-king at the same time Gondor was attacked by both the Wainriders to the East and the Haradrim to the South, and Ondoher was too busy fighting his own battles to send aid to Gondor’s newest ally. However, he was not entirely alone, for Forthwini of the Éothéod had warned him of the Wainriders’ coming and promised his son Marhswinthi would lead the horse-men against their old foe.           Ondoher rallied two armies to face this double threat: one led by himself and his elder son Artamir against the Wainriders, and the other led by Eärnil, one of his political enemies among the descendants of Telumehtar. However, he ensured his younger son Faramir stayed behind in Minas Anor as regent—and as his heir, should both he and Artamir fall in battle.           This grim fate came to pass when the Wainriders moved faster than expected and struck the eastern army before they were ready, killing the king and his son. Leadership then fell to Minohtar, the son of Ondoher’s sister Lúnaduinë and her husband Quildoloro, who attempted to stem the onslaught and sent one of his captains, Adrahil of Dor-en-Ernil, to seek aid from Eärnil’s army. Amid the chaos, Marhswinthi of the Éothéod brought Minohtar the body of Prince Faramir, who had refused to stay behind as ordered and instead disguised himself to fight among them. Disheartened, Minohtar faltered, and was soon slain himself.           In the south, Eärnil had defeated the Haradrim and hearing from Adrahil of the eastern army’s peril, he now rushed to aid his kin, for despite his opposition to Ondoher in court he was a noble man who did not wish for his king’s death. His attack against the Wainriders, complacent and feasting to their victory, pushed them back to the east and avenged the losses of the king’s house. Yet the death of Ondoher and all his heirs led to a succession crisis in Gondor that would leave the nation kingless for a year before Eärnil and his kin finally won the crown as they had long sought.

Aragorn and Eowyn are closer related than Aragorn and Arwen
Human genetics travel. They seriously get places, especially when we factor in that so elusive female line.
Eowyns maternal grandmother is a Dunedain lady named Morwen of Lossarnach, afterwards the Queen of Rohan. She is from an elite Gondorian family, the cadet branch of the Princes of Dol Amroth. The same family Denethor's wife Finduilas hails from.
Seeing that aristocratic families often marry within the same elite social circle, it is almost positive that at least royal princess married into the Dol Amroth family. Also that a Dol Amrothian lady is a direct forbear of the Gondorian line of kings.
Aragorn is descended from the Gondorian royal house from Princess Firiel daughter of King Ondoher about 14 generations ago. To put this into perspective you are 15th cousins at the least with the most distantly related member of the same ethnicity as yourself. And 50th cousins at most remove with the least related to you human on the planet.
Within Firiel is the genes of most of Gondorian aristocratic houses. It does not matter for instance if her mother was from Dol Amroth or if her grandmother was one of a pair of sisters who married into the Royal house and the House of Dol Amroth respectively. Or if Firiels first cousin was the forbear of the lords of Lebennin for instance, and a daughter would eventually wind up as Morwen's maternal or paternal foremother. Simply due to the exponentially large amount of ancestors every individual has and the massive amount of generations between Aragorn and these forbears. So that makes Eowyn and Aragorn at least 15th cousins if not closer. Their shared common ancestor probably lived 1300 years ago. Compare this to Aragorn and Arwen who's common ancestors Elwing and Earendil had their children about 6 millennia ago.
Also Faramir and Eowyn are 5th cousins at most.
Faramirs mother Finduilas, and Eowyns Grandmother Morwen are from the same family, the Princely house of Dol Amroth, though Morwen's father was not the Prince but a younger son of the line. Morwen and Faramir' grandfather Adrahil are contemporaries. The impression is they are not first cousins, but much further distant the prestige of association with the house would fade. So I would place Morwens grandfather as the you get brother of Aglahad, her father as first cousins to Angelimir. Morwen herself as second cousin to Adrahil, and their respective grandchildren as fourth cousins. Maybe fifth cousins if you want to add another generation of separation. At any rate the relationship was close enough that Prince Imrahil acknowledged Eomer as a kinsman.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 1
Nuin vs Faramir (son of Ondoher)
Nuin:
A Dark Elf in the Book of Lost Tales.
He’s an elf who found the first men asleep before the sun rose! He accidentally woke them up and took responsibility and taught them how to talk and how the world works. They call him the Father of Speech, in the very early draft he inhabits. Still canon in my heart, you go you random Avar.

Vote Faramir I

fundamentalist royals? centrist loyals? anti-kings? huh?
OKAY! lets see how easy this is to explain.
So a few important baselines, Gondor has been Steward-lead for 1000 years by lotr. Stewards are not kings, they have lesser powers than kings and there is a council that consults on decisions. So their rule is different than a King’s rule.
A few hundred years before the last king died, Gondor was at war with the wainriders and THAT war killed not only the king (Ondoher) but also both of his sons. His daughter and last remaining child, Firiel, had married the heir of Arnor (Northern Eriador basically) Arvedui.
Arvedui saw his chance and applied for kingship of Gondor through making Firiel Queen of Gondor, aiming to be King of Arnor and Gondor. Pelendur was the Steward of Gondor at the time and it was his job to choose who got the crown between Arvedui and Earnil (once removed cousin of Ondoher).
Now, as I said, Gondor had just had a war, things were still dicey and Pelendur decided Earnil (an already proven Captain and considered a hero after his victories against the wainriders) would be best for Gondor, despite his mildly lesser lineage. HOWEVER... the legality of this was mildly ~ lax. I PROMISE this is important context I swear.
Arvedui’s claim was ‘I am the closest heir of Elendil whom was king of both Arnor and Gondor, and Firiel my wife is the closest heir of Anarion, first King of Gondor’
Pelendur’s answer was;  "The crown and royalty of Gondor belongs solely to the heirs of Meneldil, son of Anárion, to whom Isildur relinquished this realm. In Gondor, this heritage is reckoned through the sons only; and we have not heard that the law is otherwise in Arnor."
Basically, whilst Numenor had had ruling queens, neither Gondor nor Arnor had continued that practice. So Pelendur’s got a point BUUUUT that hadn’t been legally ratified until now, which is what Pelendur did essentially by making this case. Hence Pelendur put another nail in the coffin for Gondor ever having a ruling Queen.
Anyway Earnil got the crown! And Arvedui lost Arnor to it’s own wars bare years later. SO WITH ALL THAT IN MIND!
King-Anti’s: This was just a funny name I was using for Anti-royalists. Folk who like not having a King, have some complaints about the previous kings and would like to keep with either Steward rule or some other form of government. I don’t call them necessarily Stewardists, partly because most folk are positive towards the Stewards, and partly because some Anti-Royalists don’t want the Stewards ruling either.
Centrist Royalists: Folk who are still loyal to the idea of Kings and want them to come back. However, they’re not Steward-negative, they think the whole system worked as intended (Pelendur’s decision and Earnil’s coronation included) and appreciate that the Stewards have done a good job at keeping the country safe in waiting for the king to return.
Fundamentalist Royalists: Folk who’re still incredibly pressed about Pelendur’s decision, believe Arvedui should have been king and that the Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor should be reunited into one massive empire, as it was in it’s inception. Some genuinely believe Pelendur’s decision was misogyny motivated and are very angry about this. Some are using that argument as an excuse. It is impossible to tell them apart. Firiel discourse is a massive buzzkill.
THERE! That all make sense?
