Daemyra stans on Twitter are so misogynistic, illiterate, and racists. They missed the entire point of Rhaenyra’s story. It’s scary how they refuse to admit that people have several loves in their lives. I hope they never met a remarried widow/widower irl.
*EDITED POST* (10/8/23)
Please refer to this post to get a more in-depth answer.
A)
It's pretty clear that in both the show and the original story these two would have preferred to marry each other from the beginning. I am not totally sure if book!Daemon would have actually pursued, developed a relationship, or "looked" at Laena while married to Rhaenyra like I suspect he did "when developed a romance/had sex with/pursued/"looked" at Rhaenyra when she arrived at Driftmark and visited during the duration of her friendship with Laena.
Repeating myself, which is most likely? IF Rhaenyra was not okay with an open marriage nor in love with/attracted to Laena herself: Book!Daemyra marry from the jump and Daemon has a relationship with Laena or acting on the attraction I think he'd still have & pursuing a relationship with her? Or Daemon and Laena being married & later Rhaenyra shows up and he pursues/looks/develops a relationship with her while married to Laena?
I do not think he stopped loving or caring for Rhaenyra in their unique way after he married Laena. However, in the original story it is more than obvious he loved & cared for Laena.
B)
Here's the thing, I was/am a Daemyra Stan before and after HotD existed and I love their story. I read them as intentionally the OTP of the narrative. But I also don't really get how book!Daemon was seen as uncaring didn't love or wasn't at least emotionally as well as physically attracted to Laena.
I as a reader/audience/consumer of stories do prefer soulmate and one-true-love stories over many other types of love stories, but it's not enough for me to measure a person or character's worthiness based on how many people they've been with. And in real life, it's just a fact that people fall in love (and I still don't know what that's supposed to mean myself, what "love" is) more than once in their lives. Doesn't seem fair to be so repressive and deny the possibility for DaemonxLaena to have more respect, affection, or care in a TV adaptation, which is what some do. The show we do have barely delivered and made it seem that Daemon cares but is much more distant than even what the original text shows.
So I don't begrudge people for saying show!Daemon should have been genuinely in love with or loved and cared for Laena, even while also in love with Rhaenyra. One, the text supports that possibility, and two, love could be different without being less or "more" or "less" as in quantity, whatever that is supposed to mean.
Outside of narrative, yes I do think it's possible for a person to want to be with one person more than another person, and the original story gives enough for us to believe that there was real love and caring between Laena & Daemon. In canon, they marry they married in 115. In 116 A.C., he took it upon himself to write a letter to Viserys un-flashingly (as is his way) to get him and his family to stay at Driftmark so their daughters could grow up in one of their ancestral homes. Before that, they lived together touring several Essosi cities before settling in Pentos so Laena could birth the dragon twins 116. Only a few months pass before they move to Driftmark so the girls can grow up there. So they had been married for a year or so, alone, for a year. At some point in 117, Rhaenyra becomes friends with Laena. Laena died in 120 A.C., so Laena-Daemon-Rhaenyra was a unit of some kind longer than Daemon and Laena were but Daemon was obviously still sleeping with Laena for her to be pregnant and die of her labors in 120 A.C. The man also grieved heavily after she died.
Meanwhile, he spent a few months with Rhaenyra after he came back from the Stepstones in 111 A.C. and before his next exile. Still, Rhaenyra admired him familially/platonically before Mysaria's exit and for years. I do not think he ignored her or did not spend some time with her before he went to the Stepstones, and he was not responsive to that, even if not to the same degree. There was a bond made there that facilitated/informed their later bonding after he returned and began to court/"court" her.
This is what I think DaemonxLaena's pre-marriage relationship was like and why he chose her/she chose him in the first place.
I don't think he loved her exactly like how he loved Rhaenyra nor that they immediately built a relationship like the one he does with Rhaenyra, but these women are two different people and the circumstances of their getting together are very different. And I am not sure if Laena thought of him as her great love so much as her partner because it likely wasn't that type of relationship, as: the text centers Daemyra more; we do not get a clue as to Laena's feelings for Daemon as much as we have considerations for how he felt for her besides her wanting to marry him (and not likely not wanting to marry a freeloading poor Braavosi boy-man); and the text emphasizes how much Laena loved dragon-riding and her bonding with Vhagar at 12 over any romantic feelings for Daemon while they were married. Her relationship & feelings of love (of any kind) for Rhaenyra also seem evidently stronger than her feelings for Daemon to me during the actual marriage. (But IDK, bc we don't have actual details!)
Is this because Laena had a smaller role to play in the story and did not do any political act besides marry Daemon have his kids and betroth her kids to Rhaenyra's and therefore there was less attention paid to her and her feelings for Daemon? Is this because those who could have brought more insight for us were at the Essosi cities the couple spent more time in than in Driftmark? Or is this because she just actually didn't express affection with Daemon in their time at Driftmark? IDK.
Conclusion(?)
It's also safe to say that he really did love/care about Laena when we know how he treated Rhea Royce. But, I can see how Daemon would love Rhaenyra more...intensely, I guess? There's a je-nais-se-quois to it.
Because it is without a doubt true that he spent with Rhaenyra not very long after Laena's death if he hadn't already been doing so before she died. Pretty sure that post-death sex was for intimacy and to "consummate" something interrupted and thus longed for.
Like I said in an earlier post, it's better to say that book!Rhaenyra was Daemon's first, enduring, and most intense(?) love. It's hard to impossible to quantify the unquantifiable.

“Baela shrieks with her father’s anger.”
“Jace the closest to Aemond in age —”
“Aemond puts his hands around Luke’s throat, throttling him.”
“You will die screaming in flames just as your father did.”
“…comes at Aemond, who readies the big rock.”
“He counters, smashing Jace’s face in with the rock.”
I’m gonna knock some teeth out ‘closest to Aemond in age’ and he was canonically 6 to Aemond’s 10. Jace and Luke were the only ones really involved with the fight in the book, and it’s stated multiple times that Aemond had the clear advantage over them and was beating them ruthlessly. It was a clear power play on his part that quickly turned sour because the younger brother feared for both his and his older brothers life (as he should, the kid was 5 fucking years old).
I know why they added the Dragon Twins to the fight, and it was solely to infantilize Aemond even further than they already had (and demonize the girls and the Velaryon boys in turn). Sure, I’m supposed to feel sorry for him because he was bullied for not having a dragon (boo fucking hoo); but I’m not supposed to feel sorry for the twins after they just lost their mother, considering how quickly that storyline was left in the dust to further Aemond’s. I’m not supposed to feel sorry for the woman and kids who were targeted purely due to their blood/gender (but that doesn’t matter ofc just that they’re bastards and harming poor helpless trueborn baby Aemond how dare they).
The agenda being pushed in the show is obviously full of microagressions against these kids — the Velaryons were made into POC just to make certain the audience knew that Rhaenyra’s first three children were bastards, and Baela and Rhaena were added to the fight to show them as the ‘true’ aggressors to the entire situation. It didn’t matter that they had lost their mom recently, it didn’t matter that they didn’t even know who Aemond was. They had one of the last living relics of their mother stolen out from under them by this random kid who immediately insults them to their faces for having the audacity to be upset, but HE is the victim here. Jace had just found out about Harwin being his bio dad and then lost him within a short amount of time. He was being openly mocked and told he and his baby brother were going to die in the exact same way at Aemond’s hand. But no, no! Don’t jump to the obvious conclusion; AEMOND is the victim here.
Four grieving children reacted on their extremely volatile emotions, with one acting on fear alone, and it ended poorly for all parties involved— who would’ve thought?

These actors will literally be hated and bullied, what are you talking about? If you open Tom's interviews, he adores Aegon, Ewan adores Aemond. For God's sake…
appearances of actors aside cause they all are bullied for that, especially matt, ewan and emma and racists comments too (i'm saying that just to be clear, i will comment only on actors actions)
you mean the actors would be bullied for supporting tg and going against tb... like ewan for praising aemond? or tom describing how would he kill rhaenyra if he could? or olivia sympathizing with alicent? bffr
these are really some of least agressive tweets, but still negative towards tb actors:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
calling real person a bastard for playing silly game (also harry was attacked for choosing maester over alicent but when ewan chose in one game daemon over alicent it was fine), making fun of their character's death, bethany was being eaten up for going tb while tgc did the same with tg and no one said a word, the insinuations that harry collett did sexual favors for the role of jace (mind you, he was 16!! when he landed the part and i'm not even gonna comment on harassing elliot that way, creating fanarts and ships luke x adult people with using 14yo elliot's face), being compared to animals, emma is being constantly insulted and misgendered by tg who hates rhaenyra and the same goes with phoebe cause they said one sentence in promo video...
i'm not saying tg cast don't experience that kind of behaviour, sure they do. while it's not true that they don't anymore speak praising their characters or tg cause they do, especially tgc. the truth is they didn't say anything here what would be worthy argument that aegon should be the king because it's simply not true. what could they say? "aegon is the man" doesn't matter, law of inheritance the crown doesn't work that way. "rhaenyra has three bastards" it's about her claim, not jace's. "daemon would be terrible consort, too close to power" sooo unlike aegon the rapist who actually would be a king? "rhaenyra slept with more than one man" you try to say it in 2024. what they can say?? the show and books clearly stated the greens are usurpers, the actors know their characters are wrong. ewan gave motives of aemond but the rest of them didn't even try that
i literally went on twitter to look for that kind of stuff and like i said - there's so many insults about actors' appearances but speaking only about their opinions about teams, what i see is team black that is being constantly attacked, especially the young ones and/or black actors. whenever they have their promo or speak well or team black there's always bunch of people who will attack them and i don't even count "they're boring" cause while it's stupid, it's not really an attack ig. while in case of bullying for appearance i don't go against one team, that's here it's very clear to me that tg stans many times crossed the line
actors still speak well on their characters and tg, so stop that bs, the problem here was that they didn't have anything to say. also sooo which one, they can't say anything to not be bullied or they show how much they love their characters? no mention that you can love a character and still see they're wrong lmao

That the only reason some Greens want Jaehaera to be the mother of Aegon III's children is because she's white brings out the worst in me.
I totally understand those who wish this because Jaehaera's death seems unfair (I totally agree with this) and unnecessary to them, because they want Alicent's line not to be extinguished or whatever, but for some to just say "because she's white"... Really, those levels of racism are surprising.
We don't even have a confirmed hint of how Daenaera will be portrayed in the series (and if we get to that part!), because unlike the rest of the Velaryons, of whom a few only describe themselves as having no more that "silver hair and lilac eyes", Daenaera is fully described and leaves no room for her to be altered.
And yes, I understand that it's annoying when in series/movies producers alter the physical features of characters whose traits are fully detailed in literary sagas, I can understand it because I am an obsessive lover that the characters are respected as they are described in the books, but even if she's played by a black actress, what would be the problem with that? She can be the wife of Aegon III and mother of his children quietly as canon says!! Her skin color doesn't have to affect anything.
And then they say "oh, but the 'curse' of the Targaryen heirs", the "curse" is only about black-haired Targaryen princes, no one talks about skin colors. So it doesn't enter into the equation for them to want to remove Daenaera either.
Tell me that your reason for Jaehaera and Daenaera's fate being altered is because you want a happy ending for the little princess Targaryen and I would understand your opinion, something totally respectable. But that the only reason they give for that change is because she's white... Honestly, just say you're racist, don't want a black woman married to a Targaryen king, and you don't really care about Jaehaera's fate.
I shouldn't, but the truth is that these comments surprise me a lot with the level of racism that the ASOIAF fandom has. I feel like the next time I read something like that I wouldn't be able to contain my answer.

i will never get over how funny it is that jace was technically the only one who spread the bastard rumor in episode 7. aemond said it to jace and luke when there was no one else around; if jace hadn't later brought it up in an entire room full of lords, guards, servants, etc. literally no one but the kids themselves would have been the wiser. and announcing it was unnecessary; they didn't need to bring up the bastard thing in order to make the self-defense play, since aemond had point blank threatened to kill jace. but the only thing he told rhaenyra was the bastard thing, so it was the only tool in her arsenal when she confronted viserys.
obviously jace was just a scared kid and likely wasn't considering political implications, especially since it seems like rhaenyra never really talked with her children about this issue. i do wonder if he knew that saying this would make it easier for rhaenyra to defend them short-term, but missed the greater damage it would do long-term to breathe life into these rumors by acknowledging them publicly.
(as an aside, i like to think this was why aemond smirked when jace said the word "bastard." he knew that by voicing the rumor, jace had done more to damage the blacks' reputation than aemond ever could have on his own)

not me crying at rhaenyra and alicent genuinely reconciling and seeing the way they grapple emotionally for each other, like regaining a limb they'd lost -- you can see it in their eyes, and suddenly they're both 15 again, just two young girls who love each other so much and so fiercely, and things are different now and it's been twisted with betrayal and pain and lies and fear but underneath it all, somehow, some way, that love was still there.
before of course, it is lost again.
permanently.

If you could rewrite Show Alicent, how will you portray her?
*ADDITIONAL NOTE* -> I put more thought into this question in this post, where I gave a YouTube comment. If I had to deviate from sweetestpopcrorn's fanfic Alicent. *END OF NOTE*
The Dance is about how a woman is usurped because a group within her family decided to take power for themselves and use her gender's sociopolitical value and her actions flouting her restrictions against her. The Dance is about misogyny against Rhaenyra -- she is the protagonist.
I would show Alicent talk against Rhaenyra to her kids behind closed doors, make snide comments about Rhaenyra's habits and superficial presentation (hair and dress), have her be more like how she is in episode 6 and 7 where she was all gungho against Rhaenyra. Have her call Rhaenyra all sorts of misogynist terms and imply such.
She would never be “friends” with Rhaenyra, since this ship makes no sense at all even on screen (and some of this POST). She also is not Rhaenyra’s age (like in canon). She retains her 9-year seniority so that her turning against 10-year old Rhaenyra gives way to a picture of her emotionally isolating Rhaenyra every chance she gets.
I would bring up her past with Jaehaerys I when she was comforting him in his last days, have her 15-year old self hear him speak of Saera and develop ideas of only doing what Jaehaerys would have wanted. Have this be a strong point of pride and self justification against Rhaenyra.
Basically, just make Alicent like the Alicent of @sweetestpopcorn’s A03 fanfic The Blacks and the Greens. That is the most believeable/closest to canon Alicent that I have ever read.
(The Jaehaerys part came from me, though....I think).

The Stepstones - Chapter Two: Homecoming
Next chapter is up! Read below the cut.
You can also find the fic on AO3 here
Rhaenys re-read the letter for the eleventh, twelfth time. Dwindling supplies, eighteen ships remaining, the Triarchy still cowering in caves. Send more ships. A simple I love you scrawled at the bottom in Corlys’ decidedly scratchy cursive.
Seven hells. She reclined against the warped wood of the throne, her fingers massaging her furrowed brow. Nearly three years of this war, and for what?
“My lady?”
She glanced up, peering at the Velaryon officer from between her fingers. With a sigh, she straightened and rose from her seat. “Do as he asks. Ready more ships and enlist any able-bodied man on Driftmark willing to send aid. Put out a call for salted fish, biscuits, ale; anything that won’t spoil on the journey. I will have the cook see to whatever we have to spare in the cellars.” She paused. “And pray that it reaches them in time.”
“Yes, my lady. At once.” The officer bowed and left.
Rhaenys closed her eyes and balled her hands into fists, her nails digging into her palms. She wanted to scream, to cry, to do anything, something. For three years, she’d sat around and delegated, commanded from afar. Waited. Some days, it took every fiber of her being not to storm down to the Stepstones and raze those islands into the sea herself. But that was not her fight.
And so, the Lady of Driftmark coped in the only way she knew how. She flew.
Out in the castle courtyard, she whistled thrice. A low rumble answered the call. Rocks toppled down into the sea and the gulls scattered. Massive scarlet and copper wings beat the wind into a frenzy as the Red Queen emerged from her lair below the castle and alighted before her rider.
“Rytsas, Meleys,” Rhaenys cooed fondly, rubbing the dragon’s vibrant scales. She received a huff in return. “You can’t nap all day,” she chuckled, resting her forehead against the beast’s jaw. Meleys shifted backwards and stretched out like a languid cat, as though to say I certainly could.
Rhaenys patted her dragon firmly in encouragement as she climbed into the saddle. “Come, old girl. Once around the island will do us good. We can dive for your dinner.” That elicited a chirp of approval. Rhaenys cried “Sōvēs!” and they shot into the sky.
Over the next few days, waves of ships, supplies, and men left Spicetown for the Stepstones. Rhaenys oversaw it all, spending her days between the port and High Tide, helping any way she could. It kept her occupied for a moment, but as the last of the ships disappeared on the horizon, her restlessness returned.
The morning sky was immensely cloudy, the sunlight ricocheting in a multitude of vibrant hues. Meleys glided on the breeze being kicked up from the water, occasionally dipping a toe in as she was wont to do. It was almost peaceful. Suddenly, a flash of grey sped by Rhaenys’ peripheral vision, the accompanying gust of wind causing her hair to billow erratically. Rhaneys whipped around, trying to gauge the level of threat. Then, she heard the unmistakable call of a young dragon. Meleys returned in kind, and shivers cascaded down Rhaenys’ spine.
Seasmoke.
The dragon in question pulled up alongside her, carrying– “Laenor!” she cried, her heart nearly bursting. She nudged Meleys onwards, back towards High Tide, and Seasmoke followed suit. Both dragons descended into the courtyard and Rhaenys nearly leapt off before they’d touched the ground.
“Mother,” Laenor said with a smile as he disembarked off of Seasmoke’s back. Rhaenys rushed to him, enveloping him in a hug.
“My boy,” Rhaenys cried, cradling his head against her body. He was nearly as tall as she was now, she noted, his build more muscular than before he’d left. “Oh my sweet boy, look at you,” she took a step back, wiping tears from her eyes. “You’re a man grown.”
Leanor beamed back at her. Worry suddenly grew in her heart as Rhaenys asked “Are you home … for good? Is it finally over?”
“It’s done,” he confirmed. “The war is won. Father is sailing behind me with the rest of the fleet. I thought I’d lead the way.”
Rhaenys’ heart leapt into her chest, and she looked to the sea where the ships could now faintly be seen on the horizon. Corlys.
Laenor chuckled, used to his parents’ antics. “He wouldn’t stop talking about you. Every. Single. Day. I’ll find Laena and tell the staff that we’re home. Go.”
Meleys, the swiftest dragon of her time, had never moved faster. They shot towards the fleet, Rhaenys only pulling them into an abrupt halt as she spotted The Sea Snake at the front of the pack. She need to see that he was there, that he was okay, that he was home.
Corlys was standing on the bow of the ship, waiting for her.
Years of stress melted from the princess’ body, and she started to laugh with relief and unbridled joy. Rhaenys raised a hand in greeting, which her husband returned, smiling brightly.
Meleys circled around the ships, escorting them to the docks. Three years of waiting felt like mere seconds in comparison, Rhaenys ever wishing the ships to move faster.
As the ships finally made landfall, Meleys landed precariously on a strip of empty cobblestones. Rhaenys launched herself out of the saddle and sprinted towards the dock. Her heart pounded as her mind flooded with three years’ worth of anticipation. Nearing The Sea Snake, she saw that Corlys had already disembarked from the gangplank and was similarly hastening towards her.
They slammed into each other, bodies colliding in fervor.
Her senses were flooded, overwhelmed by everything Corlys. Strong arms wrapped around her waist. His lips, instantly finding their mark, danced roughly against hers, soft and warm. The whiskers of his beard tickled with pleasant, familiar friction against her skin. With each kiss, he coaxed her mouth apart, invading it with his tongue. She gasped at his advances, pushing up on her toes, leveraging herself against the arms she wrapped around his neck. Corlys’ body was already pressed firmly against hers, but now his large hands dug into her backside, trying to pull her even closer to him. Her fingers fisted around his hair in reply, tugging gently. He growled and she felt something awaken in her again, that intense, burning arousal she had once been accustomed to.
He smiled, his eyes opening to meet hers. “It’s good to be home.”
Their lips parted for a moment, both needing to catch their breaths. Corlys pressed his brow against hers, his eyes closed. Rhaenys rested her arms on his chest and inhaled deeply, breathing in the scent of the sea, metal, and leather.
“Welcome home, husband,” she whispered, softly, gazing up at him.
Corlys lifted a hand off his wife’s back, moving to cup her cheek, thumb softly gliding over her soft skin. Rhaenys kissed his palm in reply.
“I love you,” he whispered, willing three years’ worth of feeling into those words.
Her breath caught and she started to cry. “Corlys-”
“Every day, I only wished to be back by your side.” Silent tears fell from his eyes, and Rhaenys wiped them gently away.
“You came back to me,” she reminded her mariner. “Back from the ends of the earth, Corlys. You always do.”
She kissed him again, softer now, the taste briny from the sea on his face and tears on both their lips. With each caress, their ardor built again. Rhaenys felt wandering hands land on her bottom and suddenly hoist her up, causing her to let out an involuntary yelp. She wrapped her hips around her husband’s waist, anchoring herself to him.
If the men onboard the ships were staring, they did not notice.
Corlys kissed her again, his eyes twinkling with desire. “Take me home, wife.”

Me: the HotD fandom focuses too much on black-and-white thinking and dividing into Team Black and Team Green, while there is little to no sense in doing that, because:
1) both of these sides are composed of flawed figures who either make mistakes or do awful things to advance their political position;
2) this is NOT the point that George R.R. Martin wants to make with this story. A Song of Ice and Fire universe, in the end, was never about taking sides but about seeing the greater political game.
Some random Team Black fan: Okay, I see your point, it is about flawed people, blah blah blah… but let me explain to you why Team Black is morally superior and why the Greens are awful backstabbing snakes…
Me: No, I’m not gonna listen to any of what you intend to say. I’ve seen enough of this type of narrative. The fact that you still stick to sharing this, pardon my French, bullsh*t, shows that you understood nothing of what I wanted to say. Your behavior is literally the epitome of the phenomenon I criticized.
Why is it so hard for so many people these days to admit that they like a certain character and at the same time, to admit this character is flawed or lacking in morality?
Like, because if I wanted, I could have found a counter-argument to this very weak argument about the moral superiority of Team Black (gosh, how ridiculous this even sounds) very easily. I could have said that ur literally defending Daemon, a man who literally m*rdered his first wife just because he did not want to fulfill his marital duty, and a man that gr00med his teenage niece (not to mention other evil stuff that Daemon has done during his lifetime). I will not delve into further details, because as I mentioned before, I don’t see the sense in arguing - because it is always possible to find a counterargument. We could argue like that until the f*cking Apocalypse.
I don’t know why, but I’ve seen this trend more among Team Black fans rather than Team Green fans. I swear, most of the Team Black fans I’ve met feel this need to whitewash the actions of Team Black members and it’s so annoying. Perhaps I know only one person who told me that they like Team Black specifically because they are toxic and unhinged, especially Daemon 😆
