Within the next few days, Arthur had returned back to normal. At least for now. Tommy walked into my room. My nose was too busy in a book to realize he had walked in. I finally glanced up.
"Hey, Tommy."
"Check your gun."
"Why? What's going on?"
"We're doing it today."
"Doing what today?"
"Family meeting, half ten." He walked out.
I walked down to the kitchen to sit with Aunt Polly and Ada. She was finally speaking to us again. We talked as her baby, Karl, was asleep. Aunt Polly smiled as she looked down at Karl.
"Mine were terrors for the tit. Both of them. You girls never knew my children, did you?"
"I was a child myself then."
"No. Why don't you ever talk about them?"
"Never had a reason to. My heart breaks even when I think about them." She walked away from the basket Karl was sleeping in. "But today, I do have a reason to. Sit down, Ada."
Ada sent me a look as she sat down. I shrugged as we both turned our attention to Aunt Polly. "They were three and five years old. Sally was three, Micheal was five. Well, two weeks away from being six. It was Sunday morning. Uh, I was at church. 'You are not forgiven,' this pinch-faced bitch said to me. 'You are not forgiven.' You see, some sheets I had washed and hung on the line had the name of a hotel on them. They'd been stolen in a robbery and they said some porter at the hotel had been coshed. A woman from around here told the police about the sheets. Jealous, you see, of the new sheets. When the police came, they found a spirit still...making a few drops of gin." Her eyes started to gloss over.
Her eyes darted around the room. She started to break down. "And for that, they took my children from me. They never told me where they took them. They did it because they could and because I was weak. But they will never take your baby away from you. Do you know why? Because Tommy won't let them. Tommy will not let them walk all over us. Tommy has brought strength and power to this family. Cause he knows you have to be as bad as the above in order to survive. I'm telling you this because I want you to forgive him."
"How can I? My Freddie is rotting in jail because of him."
"Ada, Tommy had nothing to do with this. He didn't tell the police he was here, I swear." I said as I looked over at her.
Aunt Polly looked over at me, unsure if she'd believe us. "There's something about today you need to know." Aunt Polly went on to tell Ada what was going on today. We had to break away from this conversation here in order to get to the family meeting. Everyone was inside when we got there. Tommy stood in the front of the room with his hands deep in his pockets.
He looked around the room at all of us. "I've brought you all here today because this is the day that we replace Billy Kimber. This is the day we become respectable. The day we join the official National Association of Race Course Bookmakers. But first, we do the dirty work. We've all known this day has been coming. I just haven't told anyone the date." He turned to look at the board behind him.
"We're going to the Worcester races. The track opens at one. We'll get there at two. Now, Kimber thinks we're going there to help him to fight the Lee brothers. But thanks to the efforts of our John and his lovely new wife, Esme, the Lees are now our kin. So it'll be us and the Lees against Kimber's boys. We take them out but leave the bookies. I expect a swift victory which will send a signal all the way to London that we believe in letting legitimate businesses run peacefully."
"What about Kimber himself," John asked.
"I'll deal with him. Any more questions?"
"Yes," Polly said as she walked towards the door. "Does anybody object if I bring a newcomer to the meeting?"
I smirked as I watched them confusedly look at each other. Polly opened the door, "come on." She whispered to Ada who was on the other side with Karl. "I'd like to introduce the newest member of the Shelby clan." Ada walked through the door with Karl in her arms. Arthur started clapping when she walked toward the crowd. Everyone joined him.
Tommy smiled as he watched them.
"Welcome home, Ada."
"We named him Karl. After Karl Marx."
"Karl Bloody Marx," Arthur joked as he walked towards them. "Let me get a look at him." "Here we go," John shouted.
Arthur put his hat on Karl before holding him up. Everyone laughed. "Hey, look. He looks just like me."
"That's his ass that looks like you, Arthur." John joked.
"He's all right. He's a Shelby." We all started to walk out of the room with him.
We made our way to Garrison to have a few drinks. Well, the boys were going to drink. I preferred to stay sober for this. I had to watch out for Finn. Tommy seemed to be in a really good mood. He was even helping Grace pour drinks for everyone.
"The next family meeting, I'll make sure you're there."
"If I were family but I'm not."
"That could change."
"Tommy-"
"We'll talk about it more when I get back. Alright?"
"When will you be back?"
"Oh, is this how it's going to be? You waiting at home for me saying 'what time do you call this?'" He smiled at her as he chuckled.
"The barrel needs changing." She walked to the back room.
What the hell just happened? I thought they liked each other. He just told her he wanted to be with her. One of Tommy's friends, Jeremiah, walked into the pub. "Two vans are driving up Stratford Road. An old corporal of mine said he recognized some of the men. It's the Kimber boys, they're heading this way." My stomach turned as he stood there.
None of this made sense. Someone betrayed us. Now, we were outnumbered. The Lees were on their way to the races. Tommy took off to tell Ada and Aunt Polly to get ready for anything. The phone in the pub rang. It was Aunt Pol.
They had made the realization that Grace was working for the other side. She had been betraying us the entire time. Aunt Polly was going to deal with her. We had to get ready to fight Kimber and his boys. They were going to need everyone they could. Tommy walked up to us.
"Alright men, you were mostly in the war so you know the battle plans always change and get fucked up. Well, here it is. Things have changed. We fight them here. Today. Alone. Now they're gonna come for the pub. They're gonna try and break us up for good. We'll have no help from the law today. That pub there is called the Garrison. Well, now it really is one. And it belongs to us, right?"
"Right!" All the men and Finn screamed.
"How many are there?" Arthur asked.
"Jeremiah says two Riley vans. I reckon we're outnumbered three to one."
"Fuck," I mumbled as I looked at the ground.
"It's us, boys. It's us. The Small Heath Rifles. We haven't lost a fight yet, have we?"
"No!"
"All right. Jeremiah. I know you vowed to God to never pick up a weapon again. Can you ask him from me if you can help us today?"
"God says he doesn't deal with Small Heath, sir."
"Good man. Arthur, Scudboat. You'll take the flanks. Just like St. Marie."
"Curly, if any Shelby's die here today, you bury us side by side. Alright, we have about 10 minutes. Make your peace with whoever." I talked with John and Arthur for a few minutes.
I headed into the pub to finish off our minutes with Tommy. He put his drink down on the counter to hug me. He rested his chin on the top of my head. I listened to his heartbeat as we stood there. "Tommy," I whispered. Tears started to prick my eyes.
"If anything happens, I want you to know how good of a big brother you are."
"Don't get all sappy on me now."
"Whatever." I looked up at him with a smile.
Finn bursted through the doors. "Tommy, they're here." Both of us headed outside. We made sure our guns were ready and loaded. The men came from the opposite end of the street. We were severely outnumbered. We started to walk toward each other.
They all started to hold their weapons at us. They were showing us what they had. Once the groups got close enough to each other, they stopped. "All guns and no balls, right, Billy Boy," John shouted. It went quiet. "What do we do now? Just give the order," Arthur mumbled to Tommy.
We were all waiting for something to happen.
"It doesn't have to be like this Kimber."
"Too late for all that. You bit off more than you can chew, you little toe rag. And now I'm gonna take over this shit hole."
"Well...if we have to use guns, let's use proper guns." Danny and Freddie walked out of the garage next to us.
Freddie looked like shit. He had a giant machine gun in his hand. "Sergeant Thorne reporting for duty, sir." Tommy looked back at Kimber. "You were saying something about being out-gunned?" Everyone held their guns up at each other. Well, everyone except for Tommy and Kimber.
"Move," Ada's voice came from the back of Kimber's group. She pushed her way to the front. She was dressed in all black. She was pushing Karl in a buggy as she walked between us. Freddie shouted,
"What are you doing?"
"I believe you men call this no man's land."
"Ada!"
"Shut up and listen."
"Have you lost your mind?"
"I said shut up!" Kimber turned to look at his men.
He was just as surprised as we were. "Now most of you were in France. I've got brothers, a sister, and a husband here, but you've all got somebody waiting for you. I'm wearing black in preparation. I want you to look at me. I want you all to look at me! Who'll be wearing black for you? Think about them. Think about them right now. And fight if you want to, but that baby ain't moving anywhere...and neither am I." No one said anything.
Freddie and Ada stood there staring at each other. I didn't think this would end things this easily. I did like the effort though. "She's right, you know." Kimber looked around at all of his men then ours. "Why should all you men die? It should just be them who's caused it."
A gunshot went off. I felt a pain rip through my right shoulder as I nearly flew onto my back. I fell to my knees as everything turned into a blur. I slowly reached up to touch where it hurt. My whole hand was red. It took me a minute to process what was going on. I was shot, Kimber shot me.
Another gunshot went off. I looked up to see both Danny and Kimber laying on the ground. Tommy's voice echoed through the street. "Kimber and I fought this battle one-on-one. It's over. Go home to your families." After collecting Kimber's body, they left.
Tommy ran to me, carrying me into the pub. My body was numb. Well, it was numb until they started to fish the bullet out. They sat me down on a table before stripping off my jacket and half of my shirt. "I'm so sorry," Tommy looked into his eyes. Jeramiah took the end of a spoon to the wound. They all surrounded me as I screamed and wiggled in agony.
They all cheered me on. "Come on, An. You can take it." After a minute or 2, he got it out. "There. I still have the knack." He smiled as he put it in a glass.
"Have a drink," Arthur handed me the bottle. I took a swig before handing it back to him. "Deep breath." Before I realized what was happening, he was pouring it on the wound. I screamed as he held me still. "It's done, it's done," he took a step back. I took a few deep breaths as they wrapped it up.
Aunt Polly and Ada came into the pub. Aunt Polly was not happy. We all gathered in the private room to say goodbye to Danny. His body lay on the table. The only one who was crying was Curly. The boys all kept their composure.
John lowered his head.
"We can bury him properly. In the grave, we dug for him."
"Yeah. It's high on a hill. He'd like that." Tommy held up a bottle. "To Danny Whizz-bang. May we all die twice." They all passed the bottle around to say their goodbyes. "Come on, the day is ours. Let's celebrate." We all left the room.
The pub started to get crowded as our party started. I had to sneak out for a second to breathe. Tommy was actually standing out there. None of us said anything for a second. I asked,
"Do you think he shot me to get to you?"
"He knew my biggest weakness."
"Biggest weakness and pain in the ass." He laughed as he lit his cigarette.
I headed back to the pub to finish parting after standing there for a few minutes. Slowly everyone started to go home. The only ones left in the pub were Aunt Polly, John, Arthur, and me. John and Arthur were too drunk to go anywhere. They were passed out together in a booth. The door opened and Tommy walked in. He went to see Grace before she skipped town.
He walked into the pub with his head hung low.
"There he is."
"Tommy," John called out.
"Drink?" Polly offered.
"Not whiskey. If you check behind the bar you will find a bottle of champagne."
"The one she bought." Aunt Polly placed it on the table.
"Today was a good day. All of Kimber's men were busy here. The Lee boys took all their pitches at the Worcester races. It couldn't have gone better even if we planned it. Shelby Brothers Limited is now the third-largest legal race track operation in the country." He started to walk over to John and Arthur.
"Cheers," Arthur and John drunkenly cheered. "Only the Sabinis and the Solomons are bigger than us, boys. And all my family is here to celebrate." He popped open the bottle.
"To Shelby Brothers Limited."
"Shelby!" Arthur cheered before groaning.
Tommy put his head on the counter. I rubbed the back of his head.
"There will be others." Aunt Polly soothed.
"To others."
"To others." The 3 of us clinked our glasses.
He walked out of the pub without another word.

Easier to Bear
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: 1916 in the Little Lady Blinderverse. It was an accident, Clara and Finn didn't mean to knock over Aunt Polly's picture. They didn't mean to shatter the picture frame on the hardwood, but accidents happen. And they happen at inopportune times. Left to sort her feelings on her own, Clara decides she's disappointed her aunt too much and it's almost too much for the little girl to bear.
Characters: Finn Shelby, Polly Gray, Clara Shelby, mentions of the other Shelby brothers, mentions of Michael and Anna.
Content Warning: General Angst, Guilt, Grief/Loss, Child Welfare System Trauma, Lack of proofreading.
Request (by anon): A18 polly with Clara and Finn? Maybe they knock something over when playing before the war and Clara gets upset by it x

Clara stopped the pursuit of her brother, pausing on the cushion of the settee she wasn’t meant to be standing on in the first place. The throw pillow in her hand fell heavily to her side though she’d been poised to whop Finn’s head with it just a short moment before.
It would have been a good bit of revenge since Finn had just finished doing the same to her, but Clara stopped herself before she could accomplish the task. Suddenly, the wrongness of the whole thing settled within her, a wave of fear and guilt rushing through her. A wave of admonishment ran through her too though she didn’t direct her blame at the brother who started it. She directed it only on herself because despite only being a child, Clara Shelby had always had the sense after doing something wrong that she should have known better. She should have done better, done as expected.
Finn’s attack hadn’t set the pictures on the side table to a precarious wobble. No, that had been entirely Clara’s doing, her chosen weapon hitting the lot of them as she climbed over the arm of the chair and grabbed hold of Finn’s ankle, sending him face-first into the cushions they’d been told over and over again were meant for sitting in—not climbing over and jumping on.
And even if it had been Finn who started it…if the situation was different…if it was Finn’s hand that inspired ruin and destruction in the front parlor rather than Clara’s, that sort of behavior would have been expected from him in a way it wasn’t from his twin sister. It wasn’t any matter of the twins being treated differently in the wake of misbehavior as it was Clara picking up on some sort of nuance people always assume kids don’t pick up on.
Clara was so often praised for being good and clever and sweet, and there was some part of her terrified of what would happen if she were to turn out something else. They already had Finn to be silly and loud and rough. And Clara was meant to be a help to Aunt Polly, especially with the boys gone.
Clara watched the frames fall from the ledge. She caught just a short glimpse of them mid-air before a few of the framed portraits shattered against the hardwood, the sound of it making Finn freeze and fall silent, his head turning back towards Clara though he’d been giggling wildly and keen to get away from her.
Clara still had ahold of her brother’s ankle. Rather than letting him go, Clara gripped Finn’s ankle tighter still, her little knuckles growing white as silence blanketed the room, suspending them all there, prolonging the moment’s temporary serenity, and safety. The twins waited to see if the whole thing would simply pass, becoming the sort of memory they’d laugh about one day, or more likely, forget entirely. They waited to learn if they would get through the moment unscathed, their misbehavior hidden away before they were ever found out.
It was Clara’s fault, but it was both of them who would be paying for the sin if someone came to check on the noise. When the twins played together, their fates were tied, and whatever the repercussions, Clara and Finn faced them together. It was rarely a matter of blame being placed on one child or the other, but that didn’t mean either one of them was above trying to get out of it or trying to save themselves, so they both straightened up and sat facing forward on the settee at the sound of the approaching footsteps breaking through the self-imposed quiet.
It was Polly who had come to find out about the commotion. Clara peeked over the back of the couch. She had been hoping for Ada and her eyes were already growing damp even though her aunt hadn’t acknowledged them.
Polly’s gaze was trained on the bits of broken glass and the metal frame which had come apart in two. The twins rose slowly to their knees, leaning over the back of the couch to observe their aunt as she lowered herself to the floor, brushing aside the broken glass before smoothing out the edges of a particularly well-loved photograph.
Clara knew the picture by heart. She knew them all well enough to imagine each subject in her mind’s eye—this one, a photograph of Aunt Polly, a few years younger with a toddler and a baby settled in her arms—Michael and Anna—the cousins Clara knew of but had never known.
“Aunt Polly,” Clara started, unable to keep quiet any longer, the need to explain and apologize practically spilling out of her, “It was an accident. I didn’t mean to—”
Polly glanced at Clara then, finally pulling her gaze from the photo as she clutched it to her chest. Polly didn’t have it in her to respond to the girl, though the look on her face communicated more than enough to the child, making Clara swallow down the rest of her words and the lump in her throat.
“Really, Aunt Polly, we...”
Finn’s attempt fizzled out as Polly stood without offering a response. It was more she could bear at the moment, dealing with the twins, dealing with their excuses or their hurt. Polly wasn’t even quite aware of it, some sort of all-consuming link formed between her and the ravaged photograph, between Polly and the children who were now irretrievable. Even if she were to ever again find them, Michael and Anna wouldn’t be the children in the photograph, not any longer. Polly gripped the photograph with tight fingers, afraid that by being exposed to the smoke and grit of Small Heath, the image would be stolen from her—dissolved into the ether just as her children had done. She walked out onto the lane, the door to number six banging shut in her wake.
Finn heaved a sigh when Polly took her leave. He seemed pleased enough with the outcome, but Clara took little comfort in the fact that they’d not received a smack or an assignment to the nearest corner for their behavior. Some part of Clara felt she almost might have preferred that. Somehow that seemed less cruel than leaving her to her own condemning mind.
Finn let himself off the hook once the glass and metal bits were collected. He readily went back to playing pretend as if the whole thing hadn’t happened, scurrying off to cavort out on the lane with whoever was nearby when Clara proved to be a less than eager playmate.
Less than an hour later, Clara sat on Tommy’s bed with her box of treasures and a pile of other special things she’d collected from her own bedroom, the trinkets she liked to have on display or to use with a certain regularity or the ones too big for her little box—a scruffy, well-loved teddy that had been Polly’s when she was young. Ribbons that had once been tied in a younger Polly’s hair, and then Ada’s and Anna’s. Seeing it all in one place, Clara was almost surprised by the size of the pile of little trinkets her aunt had gifted her over the years, all of it steeped in history and love, the weight of her guilt when she considered all Polly had given her nearly too much to bear.
With great care, Clara organized the items on the bed along with the frame she’d emptied of her own photo. Her brothers had been away for nearly two years now, but she spoke to their picture daily. She studied their faces more often than she studied her own. Clara usually kept the framed photograph of the boys in their uniforms on the table beside her bed, allowing her to say good morning and good night to the boys every day, to feel close to them when they were so far, but she didn’t need to keep them in a frame. Not when she’d wrecked Polly’s.
Clara sifted through the contents of her treasure box searching for her aunt’s locket. It was stashed safely beside the items her brothers had left behind nearly two years before—John’s deck of playing cards, Arthur’s folded sketches, and Tommy’s silver pocket watch—some of her most precious possessions lent from her favorite people. She was meant to look over their things, to keep them safe until their return. Clara wished for her brothers now. She longed for their hugs and their smiles. She wished for something more than Tommy’s empty bedroom which was steadily filling up with Clara’s guilt, some part of her certain she deserved to feel this way, deserved to be alone and drowning in it. Clara felt no doubt that she deserved her aunt’s disappointment.
She certainly didn’t deserve to keep these special treasures. Not if she couldn’t behave herself and be good. Not if she couldn’t stop herself from breaking things…her Aunt Polly’s special treasures.
Clara’s lip wobbled as she plucked the locket out of the box, holding it in her small palm. She took it out only on Sundays and very special days, wearing it to church with her aunt and then putting it back away in the box directly after to keep it safe, but it was a responsibility she didn’t deserve. It was a responsibility she couldn’t handle. A hot tear burned a stripe down Clara’s cheek as she set the necklace with the other things.
“And what’s this, then?” Polly’s voice came sharp and quick, the same tone Clara had been expecting when Polly first came across the broken photograph. And despite the jolt of surprise that ran through her at the sudden interruption, Clara was grateful for her aunt’s tone, some part of her relieved by the confirmation of her own thoughts, her own guilt. She was right to collect her things. She was right to plan to give them back. She didn’t deserve them.
Clara had fancied herself alone in the house aside from her sister. Ada was napping down the hall, silent and oblivious. Clara had meant to have the treasures packed up before encountering anyone else. She had intended to leave them out for Polly with a note explaining herself. An apology. And then, she intended to be gone to Uncle Charlie’s, gone to the horses who wouldn’t ask questions and would only be happy she’d come to brush them and bring them grain, though some part of Clara wondered if she deserved tenderness as unconditional as that.
The thoughts were nearly clear in her mind, all-consuming and screaming at her, but Clara hadn’t wanted to talk about it. Writing it out would be easier. And Clara didn’t imagine Polly wanted to talk with her anyway, not when she couldn’t even stand to yell at her for doing wrong. Polly had walked away without even a glance, as if Clara and Finn were nothing, invisible. And Clara had to fulfill her aunt’s wishes. She had intended to make herself that way.
Polly remained at the threshold thinking about how routine the moment felt. Clara was always getting herself worked up. She was always turning too many thoughts in her too clever mind and running to her Tommy’s side to fix it, even now. Even with him gone to France, the girl was in his room, trying to absorb his wisdom and care from the walls and the linens and the furniture. It was all so familiar, with the house so full of memories and wishes and the echo of their boys everywhere even though they were nowhere to be found. The reality of their absence hurt all the more. It hurt Clara more.
Polly knew the feeling well. It hurt her, too. Her own house had felt empty far before the war took Tommy, Arthur, and John away from Watery Lane. It had been empty since her Anna and her Michael had gone, since their father met his end. It seemed to Polly that homes were always emptying around her, people leaving or being taken. She idly wondered if it was inherited. In the blood like the Shelby good looks. Maybe it was.
Polly was no stranger to feeling alone in a place filled with memories, feeling alone in a place surrounded by other people. Polly hadn’t had a day to herself in only God knew how long. She’d been a mother for thirteen years, but an aunt for much longer. It had been years…decades, perhaps, but looking at her solemn little niece who had gotten herself this worked up with only an hour’s worth of solitude, Polly wondered if her lack of alone time wasn’t for the best.
Clara started piling up the meager collection, squeezing the items tight to her chest as she carried them across the room to where Polly stood. Clara held out the pile, her lip still quivering and her face covered with tear streaks as she waited for Polly to snatch them away.
“What is all this?” Polly asked again as she accepted the pile before it spilled from Clara’s arms and onto the floor.
Polly thumbed through the items as Clara turned away without a word. She left her aunt’s side and moved across the room, diving onto Tommy’s long-marooned mattress. As the storm took her over, Clara pulled the blanket up from the foot of the bed. She covered her head and body as she began to shake with the full force of her tears.
“Clara,” Polly prompted. She settled beside the girl and dropped the items in her arms onto the bed.
“Take them back,” Clara mumbled. “I don’t…I don’t…”
“These are your special things, love.”
Clara shook her head from under the covers. “They’re yours,” she mumbled. Clara struggled to find the breath for her words. She struggled to get beyond the hard press of tears in her burning throat. The pain of it all was nearly too much to bear, too much to hold. “I don’t…I don’t deserve them. I…I disappointed you.”
Polly took a breath, letting her hand fall on Clara’s trembling shoulder before moving to rub gentle circles on the girl’s back. Polly had been upset about the photo. She had been wounded by it, caught off guard, but Polly hadn’t overreacted, not really. Considering the emotions Polly had running through her, she could’ve handled it worse. She hadn’t been thinking about the twins or what they’d done, not really.
She had been thinking of herself, and her babies—her Anna and her Michael. Even before she’d heard the crash in the sitting room, she’d been thinking about her babies, distracted with thoughts of them for the whole morning. And it was unfortunate timing. That the twins, who had mostly grown out of the business of crawling about on the furniture, had chosen today of all days to fool around and knock the treasured photo to the ground…It was just upsetting. And though Polly hadn’t done anything—she hadn’t shouted or smacked, she realized Clara had gone ahead and done it for her. The oversensitive little girl had created a story in her head, giving Polly the role of disappointed aunt and making herself out to be a little villain. Clara had filled the void created by Polly’s lack of response and she’d done so incorrectly, assuming Polly was upset with her.
But she wasn’t. Polly could see now that it was just an unfortunate moment, one of those times when life wasn’t meant to clash, but the conditions mixed up just right, or just wrong, and it happened anyhow.
“I’m not disappointed in you, love,” Polly said, uncovering Clara’s head and encouraging her to lay back on the pillow. Clara followed Polly’s maneuvering until she was lying on Tommy’s pillow looking up at her aunt.
Polly took a deep breath, picking up the teddy bear. “I was disappointed in what happened.” Polly held the bear to her chest, glancing up toward the ceiling as she collected herself. “I reacted as I did because my heart’s a little tender today.”
They weren’t words Polly would often share, not emotions she bore to many. She more often preferred to keep them inside, but Polly found the words couldn’t be stopped now that she’d started. And somehow, Polly felt that Clara understood.
“Today, my son…your cousin…my…” Polly took a steadying breath. “Michael’s thirteenth birthday is today.
Polly let another breath come over her, the power of it allowing her to push forward.
“And this bear…”
Polly ran her fingers over the buttons and stitching, smiling at the teddy and then at Clara while tears pricked in her eyes.
“This bear was his before it was yours.”
Clara nodded. She’d always known it was Polly’s, then Michael’s, then hers. Clara had always liked that.
“It was actually Michael who gave it to you,” Polly laughed softly as she remembered, sniffling through her tears “He insisted you’d need something special, being the youngest Shelby and all.”
Polly handed the bear over to Clara, tucking them both under the covers when Clara hugged the bear to her chest. She’d always assumed the bear would make its way back to Michael someday, that Clara would find it in her heart to gift it to her grandchild child when Michael one day had children, but that hope was distant now, unlikely. Impossible, Polly imagined.
Polly began collecting Clara’s treasures from the bed and she piled them gently on the floor. Polly could already see the girl being drawn toward sleep, exhaustion taking over now that her aunt had soothed some of the hurt. Polly brushed the hair from Clara’s eyes, tucking the wayward strands behind an ear.
“Sleep now, love,” Polly said. She pressed a kiss to Clara’s hair and cupped her cheek, wiping away the tear marks. “It’ll all be easier to bear after you’re rested.”
Clara grasped Polly’s hand when she made to move away. “Aunt Polly?”
“What is it, love?”
“Will you stay?”
Polly considered Clara, and she considered what was needed to put her niece and the feelings and this whole incident to rest. “Only for a few minutes,” Polly said, gesturing for Clara to scoot over on the small bed. Polly laid down beside her niece, and Clara cuddled into Polly’s side, setting the teddy bear between them.
It was silent in the room, both of them tied up in their own thoughts, their own pains—still a little alone in it, but together nonetheless, their clasped hands allowing their hearts to do the same. Polly fell into a peaceful rest before Clara did, her gentle snores sounding off while Clara was still perfectly alert and staring at her brother’s ceiling. Clara tugged the blanket up over her aunt’s body, pressing a kiss on Polly’s head before settling back down beside her.
“Sleep, Aunt Polly," Clara whispered. "It’ll be easier to bear after you’re rested.” Clara hoped it would be true for both of them.

Pairing: Finn Shelby x reader
warning : it’s long
Summary: Isaiah Jesus’s sister comes to small heath, and falls for Finn .
A/n: Firstly, @marvel-is-a-mood thank you so much for the idea 💖secondly, I am sooo sorry it took me so long to write and post this fic.
Everyone in Birmingham knew Isaiah Jesus as the blinder, Finn Shelby’s friend and the son of the preacher.
And though Isaiah rarely ever spoke of her, small heath also knew he had a sister. But no one had seen her. She’d lived in London with her aunt her whole life. It was the safest decision for her , given her father and brothers involvement with the London gangsters.
Jeremiah and Isaiah visited her every few months, which again kept her out of Birmingham.
But she’d decided to venture out on her own, for once. She decided to go visit her brother and father. Plus, a bit of change would do her good.
Heads turned and men whistled at the young woman who was clearly new to town. But she paid them no heed and continued walking towards the infamous pub she’d heard so much about from her brother.
she slowly opened the door to the pub, the only light in there seemed to be from the sunlight outside, creeping in through the window.
“we don’t serve women” a man behind the counter eyed her curiously. His statement wasn’t harsh, it was more precautionary.
“no harry, but I do” a blonde woman said softly,  appearing from the storage room behind him. Her Irish accent instantly assured the young woman that the barmaid wasn’t from Birmingham.
the older bartender sighed, turning around and continuing to wipe a glass.
“What can I get you?”
“gin , thank you”
“bit early isn’t it for plain gin?” she smiled, pouring some.
“well I’ve had a rather exhausting start to my day”
“I'm grace”
“I'm  Anna, usually don’t go by a full name, but its anna Jesus if you will.” she raised her glass to her lips
“Jesus, as in Jeremiah Jesus’s daughter?” Grace inquired
“yes, have you seen him? or my brother Isaiah. I'm here to see them.”
something about the Irish barmaid didn’t sit right with Anna. She downed her gin in a go, clearing her throat at the burn .
“your brothers at the betting shop down the street.” Grace called after the woman making her way out.
*
She eyed the shops carefully while trying to find the betting shops. Once she did, she opened the door and stepped inside. “She’s in the wrong place isn’t she?” a man snickered somewhere.
Anna turned her head towards the man, her eyebrows furrowing. But before she got a word out, a woman with short hair and a black coat walked towards her “you’re not here to bet are you?” cigarette dangling between her thin fingers.
“I- No , I’m looking for my brother “ she eyed the entire shop, trying to find her brother” a barmaid at the garrison told me he was here” a small panic had risen in her. Anna was starting to regret making the decision of looking for her brother and father. The faces of the many men staring at her , was making her beyond uncomfortable.
“who are you?” the woman inquired, she had a motherly look in her eyes, that was the only thing that calmed Anna’s nerves slightly.
“anna, Anna Jesus”
“course you are, come along ”she placed the cigarette between her lips “don’t worry boys, she’s no threat” the men instantly lowered their gazes and continued to holler numbers.
“um, who are you?” Anna asked following after the woman.
“I’m Polly, dear. Aunt Polly to 5 fucking nuisances”
towards the back of the shop, Anna saw her brother talking to a boy who seemed to be a few years younger. Maybe just by 2 or 3 years.
“Isaiah” she gasped, walking quickly to the boy who looked her way surprised.
“Anna” he walked to her and hugged her. He hugged her tight , and just didn’t let go for a few minutes.
“what the fuck are you doing here?” he let go . His question was more , again one filled with worry rather than anger. Which made Anna curious as to what went on in small heath that she was being sent silent warnings?
“I decided to come and visit you and Dad , instead of the other way around. plus i needed a bit of a fucking change”
The boy Isaiah had been talking to cleared his throat.
“right, Anna this is Finn Shelby, Finn this is my sister Anna” Isaiah introduced Anna to the boy who was starting to blush.
“nice to meet you , Finn” Anna couldn’t help but stare at Finn’s eyes. There was some sort of innocence in them , that seemed to draw her attention.
“Yeah, you too” he looked away.
“Right, Finn stay away from her, Anna , you come with me "Isaiah rolled his eyes.
“why the fuck’s everyone giving me these piteous looks?” Anna muttered walking next to her older brother.
“because this is small heath. Come on, dad’s over there”
Jeremiah Jesus had just walked out of what looked to be the main office, upon looking up, he saw his daughter walking towards him with her brother.
“anna?’ he walked to her.
“hi” she sprang and hugged him. The men in the shop paid the small family reunion no attention.
He watched the way she smiled and laughed while catching up with her father. Finn couldn’t help stare at the young woman he just met. He found it fascinating that she just walked into the betting shop without even knowing she was amongst a bunch of gangsters. She felt uncomfortable, he saw it on her face the moment he saw her behind Polly, but she’d come in further just to look for her brother.
He wanted to get to know her better, but Isaiah’s warning lingered in the back of his head.
******
“Alright, just come find me at least before going anywhere” Isaiah argued with his younger sister in their small home.
“Why , ‘saiah ?” Anna groaned.
“Alright look, don’t tell our father i told you, but small heath , its a fucking dangerous place alright. We-we’re involved in something and it could be dangerous for you”
“what the fuck are you talking about? involved in what?”
“Just this betting business can get quite out of hand at times , alright.”
“Alright, i wont go anywhere without letting you know-” “thank you” Isaiah rolled his eyes .
“let me finish saiah” Anna grumbled “ i won’t go anywhere without telling you , as long as you let me get to know Finn”
No sooner had Anna finished her sentence , had Isaiah sprang up from the chair, where he had sprawled out.
“what the fuck? why, No , I- his brother Tommy Shelby will kill you” Isaiah tried to fib his way. But he wasn’t one to lie and so naturally he failed miserably.
“Why the fuck will I kill your sister Isaiah ,eh?"
Tommy Shelby’s figure loomed in the doorway. Of course no one had heard the London gangster walk in.
“I- Fuck sake. Anna that's Tommy” Isaiah didn’t bother telling Tommy this was Anna since eh clearly knew already.
“Um- Hello, Mr. Shelby.” Anna said awkwardly. she didn’t know the man, and on any other occasions he would’ve panicked had a random man walked in unheard, but since Isaiah seemed to know the man she was alright with it.
“Right, Isaiah, Telling your father we need him at the shop tonight. We’ve got some work.” His blue eyes turned to Isaiah, who had taken a seat on the counter.
“Am I required to be there as well ?” he asked
“Why, have you got somewhere important to be for once , eh?” Tommy raised his eyebrow.
Anna snickered from her spot at the table .
“Fuck off Anna, and Tommy, well someone’s got to keep an eye on Anna, can’t be leaving her alone “
“Well I'm fucking sure Finn’s free” Tommy turned on his heels walking out.
Isaiah looked at Anna’s smug smile. ”fuck sake”
*******
Anna had now been at small heath for two months. The day when she would go back to London had come sooner than expected.. Anna had become quite close to Polly, Ada and Esme. Tommy was supposed to marry Grace the following afternoon . And though no one would tell Anna the details, she’d figured out that the woman had fucked up and yet Tommy was still going to marry her. But Anna never pressed for answers , knowing it wasn’t her place.
But Anna never really found herself wondering about grace anyway. Her mind was occupied by someone else. Someone who she’d grown extremely close to.
She and Finn had become close, too close for Isaiah’s liking. She found herself daydreaming of the youngest Shelby brother almost everyday. And the only time she didn’t daydream of him , was when she was with him. She had started to fall for him soon after she met him that day 2 months ago.
She’d watch him from far while he talked to Isaiah, when he rode on his horse , Anna would find herself smiling at the look on his face.
“Anna!” She jerked up from her spot on the couch, looking up at Finn .
“Yeah” she attempted to act as though she wasn’t daydreaming of the boy standing in front of her.
“I asked you if you were ready to leave?” he laughed.
“yeah” she got up , grabbing her coat ‘so when’s the wedding starting?” She called after him, jogging to keep up her pace with him.
“In about an hour” He opened the door to the passenger side of the car.
“we’re going in one?” Anna asked. her stomach becoming a knot of nerves and butterflies at the same time.
“yeah, Isaiah had to leave slightly early with your father since Tommy needed them there earlier. Your brother looked fucking daggers at me for some reason at that”
“That’s Isaiah I suppose” Anna knew why. Isaiah had figured out that she liked Finn a month ago, the only reason he didn’t kill Finn was because he knew Finn was a good person, and he’d never say it loud , but a part of him was relieved that it was Finn his sister had taken a liking to. Rather Finn than any other boy.
On the car ride to the wedding hall, Finn had looked at Anna multiple times from the corner of his eye. He turned a few times to look at the way her hair blew back slightly because of the wind.
She’d looked absolutely gorgeous in the maroon dress she’d worn for his brother’s wedding, and it took every bit of an effort for him to not blurt out and tell the young woman he was in love with her.
He helped her step out of the car , and walked behind her into the hall. She’d seen Esme and walked off to her.
“are you ever going to tell her you like her or are you just going to fucking pine over her until she’s left?” Polly asked him, blowing out smoke from the cigarette.
“And why would you think she likes me back?” Finn asked his aunt.
“Because I'm fucking Aunt Polly. If you don’t tell her soon Finn, You’ll lose her” she said and walked away. Typical Aunt Pol.
**
After the wedding, at the dinner, the guests found themselves waiting patiently; The groom and bride were running late. Everyone at the table knew why but no one said anything.
“How long do you think they’ll be?” Anna leaned towards Finn’s ears and whispered “ hours or minutes?” she laughed.
Finn snorted his drink. Coughing and wiping his mouth.
“minutes apparently” he said gesturing his head towards the doorway, where Tommy and Grace had just entered.
Finn and Anna looked at each other and burst out laughing, earning some unimpressed looks from Polly and Ada, but John and Arthur on the other hand had smirks on their faces ,knowing exactly what the two were on about.
Soon one by one, after dinner was deemed over, each guest made their way to the large hall at Arrow house.
Except Anna. She found herself forcing laughter and smiles halfway through dinner. Since, she’d in realized she’d be leaving for London in a day. She kept herself from tearing up every time she glanced at Finn during dinner. And so when everyone walked towards the hall, she walked outside, to get some air.
Looking up, Anna blinked away the tears. How she’d go back to living a normal life after having met Finn Shelby and fallen for him, she’d never know.
“I needed to talk to you but couldn’t find you inside” Anna whirled around.
“Finn, yeah, I needed a few minutes, there’s too many people in there” sshe gave a small laugh.
“Can I, can I , uh, tell you something?” Finn looked her in the eyes.
His breathe seemed to be caught in his throat, he could hear his heart beat in his ears , silencing the rest of the world, his hands got clumpy from sweat  and his ears were starting turn hot.
“Sure” Anna looked at him in a way that made Finn’s heart burst in pure adoration.
“I didn’t really know what it was, yeah, at first. But , um, I realized that-that I love you” he blurted out he las part. His eyes widening because he meant to say he liked her, he was terrified now, that he’d scared Anna away , by telling her he loved her. His heart dropped when he saw Anna’s eyes widening.
“I mean I-” but whatever it was that he meant to say next got muffled by Anna’s lips on his. His heart pounding, his hands made their way to the back of Anna’s head.
She felt as though they were the only two in the entire universe, in that moment. She couldn’t think of anyone else besides him. His hands . his lips and his hands.
He touched every part of her soul with that one kiss.
“Finn , I love you too” she held back her tears “ But I’m leaving tomorrow for London. And I’m not quite sure when I’ll be back, that’s if I come back” she looked at him with tears in her eyes, he kissed her forehead.
“stay, for me”

Polly’s Daughter - Headcannon
request ; Hey! Would you consider making headcanons for being Polly's lost daughter and how she would react to the daughter just appearing one day telling her that they just told Polly that she's dead to keep her away? And how Polly would react and treat her afterwards + how the rest of the family would? 💜
i think this is a genius idea tbh; mainly because i refuse to believe in a world where Anna Gray isn't alive. I just need Polly to be happy? i don't think thats asking too much. So yer, thank you for this - you've fuelled my domestic fantasy where Polly has a full family and is never sad again. This one also hits hard for me because my mum was adopted as a baby, and I've always grown up wondering who my biological grandma is - so however you are and wherever you are granny i hope youre rocking on and having a good old time!
i kinda wrote this from like the readers point of view? i don't know why i just liked the flow better that way. Anyway, i hope you like it! and NEVER hesitate to send in a Polly related request because i ADORE the woman. Iconic.
Tumblr media
i feel like she’d grow up dreaming of a your mum coming to find you
because you were a few years older than
but with every birthday and Christmas without so much as a card, it would kinda harden you into hating Polly for leaving you like that
being moved to Australia and completely giving up on her ever trying to find you
trying really hard to not repeat your mothers mistakes
being as responsible as possible
finally ending up with a family that keeps you around long enough for you to build up some sort of trust system and being a second mum to their other kids
you'd found out your mother was looking for you and freaked the fuck out
shock turned into anger
the woman who left you, didn't love you like any decent mother would, now wanted to meet you on her terms
absolutely not
no way
especially when you heard that the Tommy Shelby of Small Heath was the one putting feelers out for you
but being brought up in the care system (or lack there of it) had made your mind somewhat deviant and street smart
you also knew quite a few undesirable members of society, some of which had a level of power
it wasn't hard for them to formulate a fake paper trail
and just like that, Anna Gray was officially dead
you stayed in Australia but never felt settled again after that
as you got older, became an adult, the earlier anger turned into hurt
why had she left you?
why did she want you back?
i feel like these emotions would brew for a while but it would take a personal event to make you finally snap and want to go find Polly
you’ve always been careful with sleeping with men and not becoming a mum yourself so young but like you end up a month late for your period and are convinced   you’re pregnant
queue storm of Angst
never feeling so close to understanding your mums decision as this
you go to the doctors and you aren't, but it sticks with you
or maybe its just when you have to leave your new family and move out alone, you realise how hard it is to be by yourself in the big city and also how much you need family
you go to Birmingham a month later
youre SHIT scared
and not just because youre well aware of the status your mothers family has
massive fear of rejection
youre well aware of the time thats passed in-between her looking for you and you actually showing up
what if she doesn't want to see you anymore?
what if she does but youre just not what she expected and she doesn't want to know you?
standing on her doorstep for like a good half hour before knocking
which alerts the boys that something fishy is going on
Tumblr media
her coming to the door and you just standing there like a lemon with no clue what to say even though you've been literally planning this moment for as long as you can remember
finally getting the words out and making Polly the speechless one
she definitely doesn't fully believe you
she wants too, with her whole heart, but she doesn't think its possible for you to be alive so she thinks its some sick joke by one of their enemies
she definitely slaps you
you slap her back obviously
she's crying and shouting and you’re crying and shouting
everyones confused
Tommy and John coming out to break up whatever going on
“who Tommy?! who would send some whore and have them to pretend to be my Anna?”
“Oh IM the whore? who left who? i can't believe i even bothered coming all this way, all you've ever been is a disappointment, i wish i was dead so i never had to meet you “
Tommy and John feeling like they are watching Polly fight with Polly
“Pol, its her”
“How! How can i be her Tom?!”
“Just look at her Pol”
“Holy shit Pol, its definitely her” - John ever so eloquently adding in his two cent
ending up inside with Polly
the lads being nervous to leave you two together just incase you fight again but her sending them away
as soon as you start talking instead of shouting, she can take a proper look at you
and bOY do you look like her
it makes her feel warm and violently sick all in one
she probably actually has to excuse herself to vomit
she just needs to hold you
its a bit uncomfortable and awkward at first but then it all hits you at once and you can't stop yourself from sobbing
she's sobbing too
fuck me man everyones sobbing tbh
just sitting like that for hours, until you have no more tears to cry
“well lass, you’re far too skinny”
feeding you
drawing you a bath
putting the fire on for you
making sure she sets up a bed for you so you’re comfortable and i don't mean calling the maid in to do it, she wants to do it by hand so she knows its perfect
it taking a long time for you to trust her fully
but Polly literally doing everything she can to show you she will always regret losing you that day
finding out it wasn't her fault
“I didn't want to lose you, you or Michael, they took you away but i never ever stopped loving you. I thought about you every morning when i woke up and every night before i went to sleep, even after i thought you were gone’
meeting the boys properly
Tommy is cautious of you at first, not wanting to see Polly hurt but he grows to trust you and love you in his own nonchalant  way
Tumblr media
John and you being a comedy double act, you get his respect from day one for straight up fighting Polly fucking Gray in the street, and everyone else enjoys seeing him be torn apart by your humour
Arthur sees you as his little sister, would protect you with him whole life
Michael doesn't really remember you that well, but you grow to become siblings again
Ada has you over for sleepovers at least once a week, and youre even trusted to look after little Karl for her, she loves you and is the big sister you never thought you needed, but she also respects you for what you've been through and is always checking in and making sure youre okay and reminding you that youre part of a family now
Tumblr media
Finn is probably the first ti accept you because its Finn guys, what an angel we STAN
it definitely takes a while, but youre glad of the day you stepped foot on Polly doorstep
and none of them can imagine life without you now.

Tumblr media
Pairing: Tommy Shelby x Fem!Reader Word Count: 2k A/n: Thank you so much for over 500 followers! I honestly can’t believe it, thank you again! This is roughly proofread as I’m incredibly tired and most likely missed some things,
When Tommy gets blamed for the death of a young man, it hits him hard and all he needs is the comfort of his wife and children.
Words never really effected Tommy Shelby, he’d had some interesting words spoken at and about him over the years, but he was never really phased by the names people would whisper behind his back. He never thought that they would have an effect on him at all, until they were spat in his face after a horrible week.
“What have you done?!” the shriek of a heartbroken mother rang through Tommy’s office.
“What have you done to my baby?” She whispered this time, her voice giving in to the despair in her heart.
Tumblr media
Tommy knew it was his fault, he sent the boy, her son to his death. He didn’t mean to, but he should have known, he should have seen the danger.--Tommy hired a young man, about Finn’s age after he begged Tommy for work, he stated that he’d tried everywhere but no one would take him. Tommy initially declined but the boy persisted, He started rambling about how his father had died in the war and how his sister is gravely ill, and his mother need to look after her, so she couldn’t work, which left him. Tommy couldn’t help but feel a bit sympathetic for the boy so he offered him a small job as a runner, someone who could inconspicuously deliver important messages that Tommy couldn’t trust the mail with or that he just needed passed on quickly. The young man worked for Tommy for a few months before Tommy sent him off on another job, it was meant to be a quick and easy one, but Tommy was so very wrong. The news came back to him quickly that the young messenger had been intercepted and killed for the information Tommy was passing on. They strung the poor boy up as a warning, a warning for what, well Tommy didn’t know yet. Tommy had told his brothers to pass on the dreaded news to his family and that is how Tommy found himself feeling helpless as a devastated mother screamed at him for answers, answers she deserved.
Tumblr media
“I should have been more carefu- “He started but was cut off.
“I told him not to work for you, told him we’d figure something else out, but he refused, said you’d take good care of us, what a load of shit that was” She continued to cry as she spoke, glaring at Tommy, he couldn’t meet her eyes.
“I’m sorr- “he was cut off again.
“Do you have children Mr Shelby?” She asked suddenly.
“I do” he said, finally meeting her eyes, catching the anger and sorrow filling them. He immediately thought of his children, safely at home with you. Home, somewhere that boy would never go again.
“Would you put them in position you put my boy in? Would you send them off to do your dirty work? Would you do to your wife what you’ve done to me? Take her baby away?” She asked, firmly holding eye contact with him, she was a mother full of fury and right now, she wasn’t scared of him. He couldn’t bare to think of losing his children let alone your reaction. Your children meant the world to you, you loved them more than you ever thought you could love something, this also made you extremely protective of them, you wouldn’t hesitate to kill anyone that hurt them, including Tommy.
“No, I wouldn’t” He answered honestly.
“Then why did you do it to my boy? To my family? To me?” She asked, her shoulders slumping in defeat. Tommy couldn’t find an answer and she noticed this, only making her angrier.
“You can’t even pity me with an answer” She laughed, disgusted.
“You’re a monster” She spat before storming out of his office, slamming the door behind her.
Those were the words, the words that finally got to Tommy Shelby.
Tumblr media
You had enjoyed a lovely day with your children, 6-year-old Charlie and 3-year-old Anna. The three of you had spent some time in the garden, you sat under a tree reading while Charlie and Anna ran around playing. Then you spent some time in the stables, Charlie loved Tommy’s horses and just had to go out and see them daily. Anna also liked them but mainly because she liked to play with their manes.
It was now late afternoon and the three of you had set up in the sitting room, the children were playing nicely together while you looked over the guest list for an upcoming event Tommy was planning. The house was lovely and quiet until the front door burst open, welcoming your husband.
“We’re in the sitting room Tommy” You called out, knowing he’d been looking for the three of you. Not long after, he appeared in the doorway, your children instantly lit up at the sight of him.
“You’re home early!” Charlie exclaimed as he ran over to his father, crashing into him and nearly knocking Tommy over.
“That I am” Tommy replied with a smile that you noticed, didn’t quite reach his eyes. Upon noticing this, you placed the guest list aside and watched him as he interacted with your children.
“Daddy!” It was now Anna’s turn to call out to her father.
“There’s my precious girl” He smiled as he approached her and scooped her up, making her giggle with delight.
“I missed you” she said before pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek, then patting his other cheek with her small hand, something she had always liked to do.
“I missed you too my darling, I just couldn’t stay away any longer” He exaggerated before placing her back down, the two children quickly went back to playing with Tommy’s attention turned to you.
“Hello love” he greeted, leaning down to give you a quick kiss.
“What’s wrong?” you asked, with your brow slightly frowned in worry. Of course you would know something was wrong, Tommy was silly to think he could hide this from you.
“It’s uh- “He cut himself off and you noticed his eyes glaze over just slightly. Without hesitation you called for Frances to watch the children before getting up and leading Tommy upstairs to your bedroom. You shut the door and Tommy sat on the edge of the bed, removing his jacket and tossing it aside.
“Talk to me love” You whispered when you reached him, running your fingers through his hair. His hands found their place on your hips, he began to run his fingertips over the seams of your dress.
“I got a boy killed” He admitted, he kept his gaze down, not wanting to look at you.
“What happened?” You asked, you desperately wanted him to look at you, but you wouldn’t pressure him.
“I fucked up is what happened, I wasn’t careful enough and I sent a boy to his death” You felt his hands begin to shake to your sides.
“That’s not your fault Tommy” You assured him, he didn’t know the boy would be hurt and you didn’t know the anger your words filled Tommy with.
“It is my fault!” He looked up at you now and the look on his face made you want to cry. He looked completely defeated.
“I sent him, I thought that he would be fine- fuck!” He pulled his hands off your hips, too disgusted with himself to feel worthy enough to touch you. You went to speak but he kept going.
“He had a sick sister” Your heart dropped “He wanted a job so they he could help her, help his family and I gave him one that took him from them, I took that girls brother away and his mother…” He trailed off, bring his hands to his face and burring it in them for moment before then dragging his hands down his face. He couldn’t get the look in that mothers eyes out of his head.
“I’m a monster” He slumped, his shoulders falling and his hands falling into his lap.
“Oh Tommy” Your heart broke at the sight of your husband, you pulled him into you and as soon as you did, he buried his face in your chest and reach up, his hands gripping the fabric of your dress at your hips.
“You thought you were doing the right thing by helping him, how were you to know it would lead to this? You couldn’t, he knew it was a dangerous job, he went to you himself, but he was desperate to help his family and you gave him the chance when no one else would and I’m sure he was grateful” You tried to flush out the words you knew would be running through that mind of his, you knew that he had been called much worse but today, this just got to him.
“His mother came into my office” He pulled his head from your chest and looked up at you “She asked if I’d do what I did to her child to my own? She asked if I would you put you through what she is going through and the thought alone broke me so how can I even comprehend what she’s feeling” You knew that the thought of your children getting hurt because of him was something Tommy couldn’t bear, he adored his children.
“She is heartbroken and devastated love, she needed to take it out on you, she needed that. Our children are well loved and safe, you don’t need to worry” you were trying to find the right words to say.
“They’re in danger just because they’re mine, because of me they will always be a target” He whispered.
“A monster shouldn’t be a father” You couldn’t bare it anymore, that comment and the pain in his voice broke you, tears spilled down your cheeks as you cupped his.
“Don’t say that” You whispered “Don’t you ever say that Thomas, your children think the world of you, they ask me all day when you’ll be home, they wait by the door every evening to greet you when you come home, just to see you before they go to bed, Charlie always talks about how he wants to ride horses just like his father and I know that because of your love, Anna will never settle for anything less than what her father has shown her. I am forever grateful to you for making me a mother and a mother of such beautiful children, and they are beautiful because they are ours, they are as much of you as they are of me. So please don’t ever say you shouldn’t be a father because those children out there wouldn’t change you for the world” You both waited in silence for a moment, tears were silently falling down your cheeks and you saw similar tears forming in Tommy’s eyes.
“I’m sorry Y/n” He didn’t know what he was apologising for in particular, maybe everything.
“It’s alright love” You held him for a moment before speaking again “Maybe you could offer to help out his family? I know money doesn’t fix everything but if you could help save her daughter, maybe that would help” You suggested softly, and he nodded slowly.
“I’ll arrange it tomorrow, see if I can pay for funeral arrangements as well” You could tell by the tone of his voice that he was think straight again, he was looking forward.
“that’s a good idea” you leant down and caught his lips in a sweet kiss.
It was in this moment that Tommy realised that the only words that will ever matter were yours, you would always drown out the whispers of others, the names and the blame. The only words he cared about where that of his wife, the mother of his children.

Anna's Secret:
Tumblr media
Holiday Oneshot Request for Anon <3
Trigger Warnings: Drinking but that's obvious.
Characters: Thomas Shelby x Daughter/OC + Family
I'm living vicariously through Anna. Like damn girl you get Timmy C all to yourself huh.
Tumblr media
The sound of glasses clashing and men yelling filled the room as the garrison filled up with people. The Shelby New Years Eve party started “whenever the first person drinks” Arthur said, shoving a glass of whiskey towards the woman at the end of the bar. She stopped the glass from sliding past and drank it like water. This was something she’d gotten from her father. Which wasn’t always a good trait.
She stared at her uncle and smirked, rolling her eyes as she turned towards the door, waiting for her father to come bursting through.
As he entered the rowdy pub, he caught a glimpse of his daughter Anna, the cerulean eyed beauty of Birmingham. The one who went hunting with her uncles at 10 and threw punches at 15. The one who’d kept Tommy on his toes since the day of her birth.
Anna’s mother was sweet, caring, and often seen as “far-too-nice” to be with someone as cold as Thomas. But he liked that about her. She, and their unruly daughter were the reason he stayed somewhat sane. Mrs. Shelby was never one for parties though, so she entrusted her husband and in-laws to look after her while she visited Ada on weekends. The two of them getting in their own versions of trouble as they kept the family gossip alive.
“Anna” Thomas said, coming up to her with his hands drawn behind him. His eyes tearing into hers as they always do.
“Don’t go too crazy with the booze tonight aye? Make it a good New Year, love.” He said patting her on the back.
“Mhm” Anna mumbled, finishing another glass as she thought about a few days before the party.
It was a cold afternoon, her hand held tightly by the man she’d loved for months. They’d met at the pub while she visited Ada. But she on the other hand, was just as bad of an influence as a good one. Always letting her niece stay over when needed, and with whoever she wanted. But this was different. He asked if she wanted to date officially, seeing as it was almost New Years and he didn’t want to spend it without her.
She agreed, only hesitating for a second as she thought of what her father would think.
“You gonna tell ‘em?” Ada asked, already slurring her words slightly as her voice snapped Anna from her thoughts.
“Don’t know. Maybe.” She said, gulping down the rest of her whisky as she walked aimlessly around the bar.
“What’ll ya have?” She asked Tommy as he conversed with Polly. Her eyes fleeting over to her every now and then. She’s always had a keen eye for love.
“You alright?” He asked as she heavily poured the whiskey into his glass.
“Yeah. Just pouring a drink for ya. And one for me.” She said, pouring her a glass as she doctored it up with various ingredients. Raising her glass up to his before taking a swig. Polly shaking her head with a smirk.
“You’re the same person, really.” She said, seeing a grin forming on Tommy’s lips.
“She didn’t exactly have much of a choice now aye?” He said, Anna rolling her eyes as she knocked back the rest of her whiskey.
“Well I’m going to annoy Finn, you two ‘ave fun.” Anna said, eyeing her youngest uncle in the corner. He was drinking and gambling with Isiah, his lifelong friend and fellow blinder.
“Can I play?” She asked as they made a space for her at the small table.
“Mhmm, loser chugs the pitcher though.” He said, smirking. Everyone knew she was wild, her reputation around Small Heath only growing as she ran ‘round the place. She was nice like her mother, but cruel like her father, and she wouldn’t let anyone walk over her.
“Fuck.” She yelled as she slammed her cards down. Grabbing the pitcher of beer as Finn and Isiah laughed.
Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for her to feel the effects. The whiskey quickly catching up to her as she went around the room bugging her family and poking fun at her cousins. She laughed loudly as Ada slipped by and told her a joke. Tommy looking over and running a hand through his graying hair.
“You have to tell him Anna. At least at some point.” She said, walking with her over to where Polly and Tommy stood. money and business plots running through both their minds as they drank.
“Told you not to go too heavy now Anna.” He said.
“I know I know. Just wish I could see him now. Bastard had to go to another party…” she mumbled, not realizing what she’d said.
“Who?” He asked, sitting his drink down and crossing his arms as he looked into her eyes.
“My boyfriend…” she said, her eyes widening at the fact that she’d told him.
Polly chuckled as Tommy’s face turned from slight disappointment, to anger, and then a smirk.
“I knew it.” Polly said as she sipped champagne, the clock had just struck midnight, but Anna hardly noticed.
“Well tell him we’d like to meet him. And to ‘ave a happy new year.” He said, his face impossible to read as he knocked back the last of his whiskey.
“I-I will...” She said, crossing her arms just like he had, as she realized what she’d done.
After the hours passed, the ride to Ada’s was fun yet awkward, her driving sporadic as she sang happily and cracked jokes to Anna.
“He’ll lighten up love. We just have to see if the poor lad can make it 5 minutes with us.” She said, earning a smirk from her niece.
“Oh joy.” Anna said, drunkenly thinking about her boyfriend having to meet the infamous blinders face to face.

Up in Smoke- Chapter 1.5
Masterlist
Warnings- Usual PB violence and swearing
Tumblr media
Before Tommy started his day, he walked up to me. The look on his face was nothing like I've ever seen.
"I didn't tell the coppers, I swear. I don't know who did it. I don't know how they knew."
"Then who did? He knew he was coming?"
"I don't know. Anna, you have to believe me." He took a drag of his cigarette.
A few weeks passed by. Ada wasn't talking to anyone. She was pissed at everyone. I didn't blame her. I had just gotten back from talking to Ada through her door. I walked into the room to see a man sitting at the table. He had a deep scar on the right side of his face.
It took me a second to realize who the man was. The man was our father. Arthur walked into the room with a sandwich for him. "Thank you. You're a good boy." He started to pray before he ate. I didn't remember him ever doing that.
Polly rubbed her temples.
"Jesus Christ."
"Please, woman, not in vain.
"Finish your sandwich and sling your hook."
"Pollyanna, I'm the guest of the head of this family. So why don't you tend to your mangle or your scuttle?"
"The head of the family isn't here." I snapped as I looked at him.
Our dad turned to look at Arthur. Arthur didn't know what to say. "Tommy, uh, he sometimes helps with business." The front door opened and closed. The footsteps got louder as they reached the kitchen. "Well, Speak of the devil," our dad stood up. Tommy stood in the doorway.
His mouth fell open.
"How are you, son?"
"Get out."
"Come on, son. I'm a changed man."
"This family needed you 10 years ago when you walked out on us. Not now. Get out of this house."
"Tommy, he's different-"
"Shut up, Arthur."
"It's alright. I never stay where I'm not welcome. Quite something you've become." He looked over at Tommy.
On his way out, he stopped next to Finn. "Bye, son." He ruffled Finn's hair. Finn peeked into the hallway to watch him walk out. John pulled him back towards him. It was silent in the room. "He's out dad," Arthur mumbled. Tommy sighed as he shook his head.
"He's a selfish bastard."
"You're calling someone a selfish bastard? That's a bit rich, Tommy. I mean, thanks to you, we're down a bloody sister."
"You want to see him, Arthur? You wanna see him? You go with him." He pointed towards the door.
Arthur actually got up and left. Finn left with him. I couldn't believe they both did. I don't know why they still cared. Finn might have gone because he didn't know any better. He was just a baby when our dad left. Tommy bursted into my room at 11 at night.
He was dripping wet.
"I need your help."
"With what?"
"I'll explain when we get there. Bring your gun." He left the room.
I got dressed in whatever clothes I saw. I put my gun into the holster on the way down the stairs. Tommy was waiting for me outside of the house. He hurriedly walked us to the Garrison. He banged on the door a few times. As soon as Grace opened it, he barged in. "Leave that open," he commanded as he grabbed a chair.
He set up a table as if someone was going to sit there with him. Grace went to pour him a glass of whiskey.
"No."
"Are you expecting trouble?"
"Yes."
"At this hour?"
"Midnight is as good an hour as any." He put his gun on the counter.
Grace looked at me with a confused face.
"What the hell is going on?"
"I have no idea."
"When St. Andrew's bell strikes midnight, two IRA men are going to come through the door. When they have what they want, they plan to kill me. It's both of your jobs to stop that from happening."
"You could have given us a better warning."
"Yeah, he came into my room dripping wet."
"I just got the message. They want to meet here alone."
"Barmaids and your little sister don't count?"
"No, they don't. Grace, you're gonna be in that back room. Anna, you're gonna be tucked away under the counter. I'm gonna be sitting there. When I make a toast, you both are going to come out with your guns raised. You don't shoot, you just point. I'll do the rest."
"Sounds like a plan." I walked over to my spot.
Grace grabbed the gun off the counter.
"Will you kill them?"
"No, the police want them alive."
"They know about this?"
"Look, just hold it up." He showed her where to point it.
When the bell rang, we all got in our spots. The door creaked open. 2 men walked into the building. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears. My whole body was numb. Tommy poured the men their drinks.
"Lost your thirst, eh?"
"Just show us where."
"Give me the cash." The cash was put on the table. "You're going to need a shovel."
One of the men chuckled. "You thick fucking tinker." I could hear the sound of a gun being raised.
"Did you think we'd let you live?"
"Make your peace, Mr. Shelby."
"I will make peace my own way. To barmaids who don't count." I stood up from my spot.
Grace came out of the back room shooting the gun. What the fuck? We were only supposed to point. She successfully shot one of the men. The other one went after Tommy. Grace was knocked to the ground while they were fighting. I ran over to help her up.
Tommy had no choice but to kill the other man. It wasn't pretty. Tommy walked over to us. He looked at Grace disappointingly. He was on the verge of tears.
"Why did you shoot? Why did you shoot, Grace?"
"I didn't know I had it in me like that."
"Now you've seen me."
"And you've seen me. I'm sorry." I rolled my eyes as they stood there hugging.
"Not to ruin the moment or anything but what are we going to do about the bodies?" The door behind me opened.
The coppers walked in. They took a look at the bodies. Tommy stomped over to them.
"You were supposed to come on the sixth chime! You were supposed to come on the fucking sixth chime!" He leaned against the counter as he was trying to keep his composure.
"They refused to surrender. They fought well, they were brave men."
"Well, he looked like he was killed by a wild fucking animal. Still. This never happened and they were never here. Who cares?"
"Get the bodies out of here."
"Are they making the ladies uncomfortable? I'll leave you three to it, eh?" They walked out of the pub with the bodies.
I didn't wait around. I went right home. This was never to be spoken about again. A few days later, I sat with Aunt Polly in the kitchen. Arthur walked in with a lost look on his face. Aunt Polly didn't look up from her paper. "Where's your father?"
He didn't answer her. "I'm assuming he's fritting away the 500 you took from us and put in his thieving, whore-groping hands." She glanced up at him. "What were you thinking?" He flinched when she put down the paper. Seeing him like this hurt. He was only doing what he thought was right.
She glared at him.
"How dare you do something like that without talking to Thomas or me!"
"Does Tommy know?"
"No. But you're going to tell him." Arthur walked out of the house.
He definitely wasn't going to talk to Tommy. Tommy called the house from the Garrison. He needed me to meet him there as fast as I could. I barely got my shoes on as I ran out of the house. He was in the back room when I got there.
"What's going on?"
"They found the guns."
"Who found them? How do you know?"
"I took a walk with Finn. Danny's fake grave was all dug up. I'm probably going to have to go away for a little while."
"Where are you going?"
"I have no idea." Finn threw the door open.
"The police are in the lane, Tommy!" He and Grace ran out of the pub. They were most likely going to her house. Campbell and 2 coppers walked in a half-hour later. He looked at me sitting on the stool. He put his gun down next to me as if it was supposed to scare me.
"Where is Thomas?"
"I don't know. I haven't seen him since the last time I saw him."
"When was that?"
"The last time I saw him? It was definitely the time I saw him last." Harry tried to contain his laughter as did I.
"Perhaps I should ask that question again. On your knees." One of the coppers behind Harry pushed him to his knees. Campbell held the gun to his head.
"Understand this, barman. I don't care if you live or die."
"I don't know."
"Where did they go?"
"He left with the barmaid. He left with Grace. I think they went to her place." He took the gun from his head.
They all left the pub. I ran around the city looking for Arthur or John. I couldn't find either of them. When I started asking around, people saw Arthur going to the boxing warehouse. It was no longer in use since they left today. When I got there, I pushed open the big door. It was completely empty.
I looked around in hopes of seeing Arthur. When I turned the corner, I halted. Arthur sat on the old dusty floor. His sobs were shaking his shoulders. A knocked-over stool and broken rope lay next to him. I slowly walked over to him. "Oh, Arthur."
I kneeled down in front of him. I wrapped my arms around him as he sobbed. "You were only trying to do the right thing. Everything is ok," I cooed. It took everything in me to not break down alongside him.

Kismet
Requested: No
Paring: Shelby!Sister Reader x Isaiah
Words: 5624
Summary: For a year now, you had a secret relationship with Isaiah and even when he is still in the same room with you, you can’t stop feeling lonely. It’s not that you don’t love him anymore, it more about the weight of the secret you have to carry. But with Tommy as you big brother you can’t risk, telling the truth or your man might get shot.
Note:
I was in the mood for a Shelby!Sister reader x Isaiah and it turned out to be way longer than I expected it... and I even cut out dialog... So here it is!
It’s also flavored with Junior Peaky Boys fun at the beginning. And I was inspired by my homegirl’s one shot called star and my story is an addition to hers, it’s the same night, but Bonnie has some other adventures than the reader and Isaiah.
Somehow I feel like everybody is a little ooc, but I couldn’t correct it.
Requests and tag list are still open, feel free to dm me or send me an ask.

Warning: swear words, drinking, binge drinking, gambling, a hinted smut and a sweet ending
Tumblr media
It was one of those nights, nothing special, just the usual fellows around the same table in the Garrison.  You had fun nevertheless. All your friends were right there, you had enough to drink and you had a luck hand today. The cards seemed to work in your fortune.
Deviously smiling you revealed your hand. You just had won this round and it gave you unholy amounts of satisfactions. “Ha”, you cheered: “Suck it up.”
Your friend shrugged and shoved his coins in your direction. All he said was a very grumpy “There you go”, but it pleased you.
You took the money and peaked around the corner. Where was Michael with the drinks? He was like a brother to you, but he was just your cousin. Maybe it was because you were born just two months before his older sister, Anna. Even though, she was gone Michael came back to his real family and now you were closer than ever. You cared for him, more than your siblings did.
But that didn’t mean you wouldn’t hit him, if he just left the bar to fuck with some random girl. It was not about him having sex, more about leaving without telling anybody. Especially when he was supposed to get drinks for the table. You moaned and said: “Where is Michael?”
“Probably doing somebody”, Isaiah joked and lit a cigarette. Then he offered you one and you took it gladly. Actually, you bit your lip and gave him the side-eye, but you had to hide your smile in front of the others. Bonnie and Finny weren’t the smartest boys in Small Heath, but you wouldn’t risk it.
You had so much fun with Isaiah that you didn’t even know when it started. Months passed by, while you were completely caught up in your little game with him. Nobody knew it. That was mainly Isaiah’s fault. At first it amused you to keep your relationship with him secret, but now you were ready to tell your family about it. Your boyfriend didn’t like the idea.
Somehow you thought Michael started to notice. He gave you the glace, which said: “I know, dear”, but maybe you were just getting crazy. You just had to be more careful around others now and everything was fine.
The night was still young and you were keen to make Bonnie lose all his money today. He had won the boxing match earlier and the bruises were still visible, but unfortunately for him, he couldn’t win against you. It was just a card game, but it filled you with gleeful joy. This and the fact that Isaiah was sitting next to you. Sometimes he would brush your thigh with his fingers, which made you giggle even more.
“There he is”, yelled Finny while being so fucking drunk, like you never had seen him before. Michael arrived with messy hair and his tie was undone, but he had your drink and that was all that you care for. “Finally”, you fluted and ripped the glass of his hand: “Thank you, babe.”
And the whiskey was still cold, which meant he fucked the girl first and ordered the drinks afterwards. “How was she? Good?” you asked before you took a sip from your whiskey. You weren’t a lightweight when it came to drinking, maybe not as well as Arthur and John, but you could tolerate much more than Ada and Finny. Your little brother was so drunk, he looked like his head was all empty and yet filled with bullshit.
Michael sat down next to you and answered: “Mhh, she was okay, but she talked too much.” Then you felt the weight of a hand on your thigh again. A shiver rushed down your spine, but it was the wrong side. Your cousin had put his hand on your knee. “Everything alright, Y/N?”
You nodded. “Yeah, everything is perfect”, you blabbered hoping he wouldn’t keep asking questions, but he did. “Don’t be so worried, every time I’m with a girl. I know you’re still a virgin, but you can get some too. Tommy wouldn’t be against it.”
How wonderfully wrong he was. Neither were you a virgin nor would Tommy be okay with this. After all, you were his little sister and he wouldn’t accept the guy, you were sleeping with. Of course, Isaiah was a friend of the family, but after the whole thing with Ada and Freddie you had something to worry about.
The best snarky comeback was right on the tip of your tongue, but you couldn’t say it without letting something slip. ‘What gives you the idea I’m still a virgin?’ And yet you were silent as the guy who fucked you, sat right next to you. You felt trapped and decided to go straight forward. “Yes, he would. You know it and everybody in Small Heath knows it.”
“Oh whatever”, Michael mumbled: “Just drink enough and you eventually forget about it.”
You grinned and emptied your drink. “Fuck it, let’s play some cards. I’m not done with Mr. Gold over here.”  Then you took the cards and dealt them to start the next round.
Much later that night when you brought Finn back home and went straight back to the pub, in front of the entrance, you stumbled into Bonnie. “Is there a reason why you’re smirking?” you asked him. He was gleaming red and smiling like an idiot.
Then you remembered. “The singer, right?” Bonnie nodded and his grin got even wider. “You talked to her?” Again he gave you a silent answer. You grabbed his arm and pulled him back inside. He was a lot heavier than you thought, but then again, you were just a girl and he was a boxer.
Sometime it was weird to only have male friends, it just happened. Maybe it was because of your brothers. Maybe that’s why you never acted like a proper girl. Of course you felt like a woman and you liked your body, but in your eyes it was so much easier to talk to guys.
“Eyy, where did you found him?” Michael slurred and helped you to put your friend on a chair again. With your hands finally free you had the chance to explain. “Found him outside. I don’t know what he did there, but he talked to the singer.”
Both, Isiah and Michael nodded. It was only logical for Bonnie to freak out after it talking to her. He was there every Friday night looking for the singer and now his brain seemed to melt, just because she said something to him. But neither of you knew, what she said exactly. Maybe this was a problem for another night. It didn’t look like Bonnie was able to answer.
So you ordered some more drinks and sat back down again. In this separate room, which was reserved for your family, it was almost too tempting to get close to your boyfriend again. Isiah looked so good that night and it hurt to be unable to touch him… or to kiss him. But you would be satisfied with just holding his hand now.
It was a curse; you knew it soon after you realized that you loved him. He was handsome, charming and a loyal friend. There was no better man for you, even though you wished you could be together in public. And again you bit your lip and moved your chair away from him.
But you couldn’t think about this anymore, it was too frustrating and luckily somebody else caught your attention. It was Bonnie who mumbled very quietly: “I think she kissed me, but it could be a dream as well. It felt so surreal.”  You padded his shoulder and nodded to underline your compassion.
It was just the same with Isaiah. Whenever you two were alone, it was amazing and beautiful. He was so soft and romantic and he just made you happy. But every time you woke up and he was gone, the sweet scenery shattered. And out in public it was getting annoying to find excuses to be with him or getting away, so you could spend some time alone with him and you had to lie to your whole family about your whereabouts. Slowly it became exhausting.
There was nothing you could do about it, so you just drank your whiskey and talked with the boys about Bonnie’s singer and the girl Michael had. It was so easy for them to display their relationship in the public, but of course you didn’t have this privilege as a girl. Apparently, you needed to be protected. Or so it has been explained to you. You wasn’t concerned for your safety but for your freedom. Tommy said it was his job as your big brother to care for you, even if it felt like he was controlling you. You have always been the wild one among your siblings and everything was fine, until your mum died and your dad left. Then Tommy was in charge and sometimes his opinions would vary from yours, which led to fights. And yet you feared what he might do, if he found out about your secret.
All the sudden Bonnie fell from his chair and you groaned. Now somebody had to bring him home as well. First Finn and now him… but why they couldn’t take the whiskey today? You weren’t nearly as drunk as them, but still.
Isaiah stood up and picked his friend up. “I’m taking him home. I’ll be right back”, he said, before leaving.
Now Michael and you were alone. It wasn’t what you wanted. The only thing you could think of was smooching the sweet lips of your boyfriend. You were caught up in your little fantasy, when your cousin woke you up again. “Isaiah is acting weird lately.”
“Oh… really? I didn’t notice”, you replied: “He seemed normal to me.” Your hand grabbed the fringe of your dress. Talking about him made you nervous.
Michael moaned and fumbled for his cigarettes. He put them out, you took one and he turned his between his fingers, when he added: “I don’t know, maybe I’m getting paranoid, but I think he is hiding something from us.” Then he lit his cigarette and took a drag from it.
You inhaled sharply and stared into the void for a second, before answering: “Don’t be silly, he is just as loyal as ever.” Then you laughed and Michael joined in. “Yeah, you’re probably right. I just needed to get this off my chest.”
The rest of the conversation went just like usual. You chatted, you bickered and you had fun. While the bell already announced the new day, Isaiah came back.
In this tiny glimpse of a moment you couldn’t hide your smile and he reciprocated. Actually, you were just waiting for Michael to leave now. It was your plan all along, but patience has never been your strong suit.
It took three more rounds for Michael to say goodnight. “Take care of her, will you?” Isaiah nodded. When Michael finally grabbed his jacket and headed to the door, you felt unbelievably excited. Your fingertips slapped a melody on the table, while you watched him leaving. The door shut and now you had what you longed for all night.
You turned around and looked at him. Gosh, waiting felt like an eternity. Now you were the one smiling like an idiot. Slowly Isaiah came closer and his hand pulled you to him for a kiss. “Finally”, you whispered against his lips, before giving him what he wanted.
After you two parted you rested your head on his shoulder. Now you were getting tired as well, but you didn’t want to go to your bed. “I was waiting the whole evening for this”, he moaned and stroked your hair.
The smell of his perfume made you realized how much you missed him too, even though he was with you since you went to Garrison tonight. You moved closer to him and wrapped your arms around him to give him a tight squeeze. Then you signed: “I wish we didn’t have to hide” and buried your face in his shirt.
“Babe”, he replied: “We already had this conversation. It wouldn’t end well. Let’s just enjoy what we have as long as we can.” It hurt, but Isaiah was right. There was no chance Tommy was getting you off the hook, once he knew about it. And no matter how you explained it to him, he would still be against it. You were too young for stuff like that, as if he didn’t fucked Greta, when he was the same age.
You leaned back to see his beautiful face again. There was something in his eyes, a twinkle or something like that, but it always made you feel comfortable. A lick of your lip was enough to purpose the idea of doing something nasty. He knew you since you were children and it was like he could read your thoughts, especially the dirty ones.
Isaiah started giggling and asked: “Hey, babe, I still can cheer you up, right?”
Maybe it was time for some fun, different to the fun you had before with your friends. The word pleasure would describe it well and with his knowing look he gave you so many ideas. You laughed and nodded. “I think it might help when you do the thing with your tongue.”
“Oh”, he responded amused: “Like this?” And then grabbed you for a kiss and god, what a kiss it was. His tongue brushed your upper lip just to enter your mouth and explore it as if it was your first kiss. He even bit your lip playfully and kept going until you couldn’t breathe no more. Your knees started shaking and it was needless to say, he was the best kisser you ever had.
It took you a while to catch a breath again, but then you answered: “Yeah, just like this… But maybe we could go to your place and do a little more?”
He didn’t seem to be so sure about this suggestion. His thumb stroked your shoulder as he held you in his arm. Because he was so quiet for a second, you knew, he thought about this backwards and forwards. “But right when the sun comes up, you have to go back home”, he argued.
Again, Isaiah was right. You should take too many risks. Otherwise you might get caught and neither of you wanted that. All you could do was to shrug and agree: “Just don’t shoo me after we fucked.” There was bitterness in your voice. What wouldn’t you give to wake up next to him every morning?
The pub was almost empty, when you left. You couldn’t hold his hand on the way out. Everybody in Small Heath was Tommy’s spy. Back on the streets a cold wind blew. Now you had an excuse to go near him and he shared his coat with you. Isaiah was always so sweet and caring. You knew you wanted to spend your future with him. There was no other man and you wouldn’t get over him, not now and not in five years.
You even took off your shoes before entering the Jesus household and followed him on your tiptoes to his room. It was completely dark in the house and the silence was haunting, but good for you, you knew the way by now. The excitement made your fingers tremble.
Finally you arrived where you wanted to be the whole day, in his room. Isaiah closed the door as quietly as possible and started smiling. You walked up to him and started to unbutton his shirt. Now you didn’t want to waste any time.
And neither did Isaiah. He was ripping down your dress, which only worked because the straps were so thin. His hands were all over your body and you couldn’t stop kissing every inch of his skin. It felt like magic whenever he touched you. You moaned, when he played with your bare breasts. To silence you he put his thumb on your lips, which you took as an invitation to suck it. Maybe it was mean to tease him like that, but you were desperate for his affection.
An hour later you laid next to him, your head on his chest as he stroked your hair. “You should leave, before we both fall asleep, babe”, he whispered, which caused you to sign. Leaving now was draining, even exhausting. After this wonderful sex, you were too tired to move anywhere, not to the bathroom and certainly not back to your cold bed.
You pouted your lips and tilted your head, so you could give him your puppy eyes and a pretty please with cream and a cherry on top. “Just ten more minutes. Your bed is way comfier than mine.”
He laughed and kissed your forehead. “That’s just because I’m in this bed and you like to use me as your personal giant pillow.” Your fingers hovered about his belly. Even though his muscles weren’t tense now, you could still feel the strength lying beneath his skin.
While your index finger drew circles around his bellybutton, you whined: “Maybe… just maybe that is true, but I still want to lay here for a bit. Otherwise I start to feel like a whore, who only comes for sex and leaves silently afterwards.”  It wasn’t a knock against Lizzie or her job, but you didn’t like the feeling, when you got home and had to find sleep in your own bed. Even though you had a relationship with him, you still felt lonely. Especially when the sun was rising and nobody was by your side.
“You’re not a whore and you know that”, he argued looking a little concerned.
Then you turned on your back and stared at the ceiling. “No, I’m a Shelby and that is probably worse”, you scoffed.
Now Isaiah was silent and had no witty comeback for that. Maybe, because it was true. If you weren’t part of the family, you could be with anyone, whoever you wanted. Carrying the name Shelby was the only reason, why you had to hide your relationship with Isaiah.
After a while he mumbled: “Okay, stay for a while, but you should be back before they open the shop.” By that time you were already half asleep and yet his words made you smile. He wrapped his arms around you, the little spoon and purred like a cat. Just in this position the both of you fell asleep.
Loud steps were coming near the door, but they wouldn’t wake you up. The screaming of Isaiah’s name did. It was a familiar voice and it took you a couple of minutes to notice, it was your brother Finn who shouted and ran down the hall. Suddenly you were wide awake. You startled up and looked around the room. The sun was already up and shining through the window. Then you saw Isaiah, who was just as frightened as you were.
If Finn came rushing through that door, your secret relationship was no longer secret. “I locked the door last night”, he whispered, which was relieving to you, but still no perfect solution for this problem.
Now Finn arrived at the other side of the door and was knocking on it like crazy. “Isaiah, wake up! Y/N is gone. Nobody can find her and Michael said you were the last one with her in the bar”, your brother yelled. You could hear the panic in his voice, but you couldn’t get caught. Not now.
You stumbled out of the bed and collected your clothes, when you heard Isaiah ask: “What are you going to do? You can’t go out there. He will find out.” And you knew your boyfriend wasn’t concerned about Finn, more about Tommy.
The tension in the room was immense. You had to come up with a plan or your brothers would shoot your lover in front of your eyes.
Suddenly you knew what to do. You pushed the pile of clothing to your chest and squeeze it thigh, when you explained in a lower tone: “I’m gonna hide in the wardrobe and then you open the door and go with Finn away. Afterwards I can come out and then I go to the betting shop and tell the others I have fallen asleep on a bench or something.” It was not the best plan, but yet your only option.
Isaiah nodded and you climbed into the cabinet where he stored his shirt and jackets. The second you entered the small wooden space, you knew it was all going down. Call it intuition, call it divination, call it whatever power Polly owned, but you felt it rushing through your body. He closed the door behind you and then you could hear him stumble into his pants.
Only half clothed he unlocked the door to let Finn in. Isaiah was still sleepy. He wasn’t the morning type of person and before he hadn’t had his breakfast he wasn’t really available. Finn strode up and down. You heard is nervous steps. “Everybody is freaking out right now. Polly thinks somebody kidnapped her or worse. I mean, she has always been unratable in her doings, but this time my sister is really going of the edge. It’s already past lunch and nobody has seen her”, Finn explained: “This morning her bed was empty and I thought I shouldn’t worry, but now I’m afraid I should have said something sooner.”
The cabinet was very uncomfortable and yet you tried not to move or to make a noise, which would cause Finn’s attention. However, being in Isaiah’s position didn’t seem to be pleasant as well. He had to lie to his best friend about the whereabouts of his missing sister, knowing she was sitting right here. Isaiah patted his friends shoulder and said nothing.
Finn didn’t calm down and seemed to be upset, Isaiah wasn’t panicking like him. “C’mon, get dressed. We have to look for her. She might be lying somewhere in the dirt. We shouldn’t waste even more time, standing around.” Then he walked to the closet and opened just the door where you had been hiding.
Butt-naked you fell down to the floor and looked up to your younger brother, who had the same face expression as the one time you told him where the babies were coming from. Some when later you would look back at this moment and would have a good laugh about this, but right now it felt like your world was collapsing.
He should have seen you like this and it took you a whole minute to gather the mental energy to get back up at your feet and greet him like it was the normal thing to do in a situation like this. “Hey, Finny, there I am.”
Your brother froze mid movement and stared at you as if you were the first pink elephant the world has seen or a bear riding a bike. Then he broke the silence. “What?”, he winced. There was no anger in his voice, just total confusion.
Finn looked to Isaiah and then back to you. “You screwed my sister?!”
There was no answer to this question.
“How long?” Finn asked: “How long did you hide that from me?”
You glared over to you boyfriend as if you were asking him for permission to say something. Isaiah signed and nodded. There was no point in denying this anymore. It was over.
Now you had to tell the truth. “A couple of months, maybe a year or so”, you croaked and your voice sounded strange. Like it was not your own and even though you dreamt about finally opening up, it shouldn’t have been like this.
Your brother yelled: “A year?! A whole fucking year? Damn, I should be proud because apparently you two are excellent liars with no moral issues… you two deserve each other.” You heard the disgust and disappointment, when he spoke and it broke your heart. Back then, when the whole thing started you though he might be the only one of your brothers to understand you. How wonderfully wrong you were.
“No”, you said under your breath: “Don’t fucking do this to me. I would have told you, if you wouldn’t have run straight to Tommy after you knew. Everybody knows you can’t keep a secret. So don’t act like it was my fault or my mistake, because it’s not. I would have gladly told everybody, I’m like him very much, but you and Tommy and Arthur and John made it impossible for me to even talk with a guy who is not part of the gang. You can’t turn this around and act like you are the victim in all this.”
It was time for you to stand up for yourself and your decisions… and time for you to get dressed. You didn’t seem as responsible as you were when you were still naked and in front of the closed you have been hiding in. Now you knew how wrong it was to lie and hide your relationship, because it wasn’t their concern. It was your life, your body and your choice. Nobody could take that from you and certainly not your brothers. You weren’t afraid of them. All your life you saw how your brothers treated women and you said nothing about it, but this should change right now.
So you stood there, furious and filled with rage, put on your dress and your shoes and said one last thing, before leaving: “This madness has to end.”
You stormed out of the room- not caring for Isaiah or Finn- and heading for the King of Small Heath to throw him out of his high throne. Your hair was a nest and you smelled like a bar after a dirty old night, when you entered the betting shop. Nobody was there, just the regular family members.
Everybody seemed to be relieved to see you again and then came close to hug you. Ada was right next to the door and the first to greet you. “Oh my god, you’re back, sweetie”, she muttered.
Next was Polly who examined your appearance for cuts and other injuries. Of course you had none, besides the hickeys Isaiah gave you. She tried to take a closer look of your neck, but you pulled away, which caused her to ask: “What happened? Where were you all night?”
Now Tommy was coming up to you. His steps were slow, but fierce and the glare in his eyes was pinching. “Just from the smell I would guess, she was with a guy this night”, he scoffed: “She probably had a lot of fun, but now she should say, who that guy was, so we can take actions.” You knew he was addressing you, even though he didn’t phrase it like that.
“I don’t think, this is your business”, you replied with a grin on your face. You wouldn’t back down. Not this time. “But yes, I was with a guy tonight. So you don’t need to worry. I’m completely fine.”
Your older brother led out a little laugh, pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. “Well, well, well, I don’t care what you think. I’m your brother and it’s my job to make sure you’re safe”, he explained: “And now you tell me who he was.” Ah, past tense, a hint of what was going to happen.
You crossed your arms and tiled your head to give him a dismissive look. “Who said it was your job?” was your comeback, but your brother wasn’t remotely impressed. Neither of you would let the other win. You were too stubborn for this gesture of insight.
Others, including Arthur and John, were somehow intimidated by Tommy’s behavior, but not you. Actually, you learned too much from him to take his shit.  He taught you to help your head up high and how to outsmart your enemies.  Now you could use the same strategies against him.
“Ever since our father left and mom died, you act like you are in charge, but you’re not. We are your siblings, not your pawn, waiting for your command”, you hissed: “I have my own life and I make my own decisions and who I meet shouldn’t concern you.” Slowly your anger grew. It was a boiling feeling in your gut, like you were fueled with fire.
Tommy was getting gleaming red. You had hit the right spot and you knew you would hurt him with your words, but otherwise he wouldn’t understand. The words were stuck in his throat as he killed you with his looks.
Patiently, you waited for his answer. He wouldn’t give you the satisfaction, but silencing your brother was the best thing ever, since he was the reason why you felt miserable lately. “No comeback? No arguments, dear?” You loved to poke his wounds and you did it with a huge smile on your face.
“As if you would listen to me… You even said it yourself. You wouldn’t take my advice”, he responded and bid his lip. “But I don’t need to talk to you to teach you a lesson. You’re too young to fuck around town and I’m going to find the bastard who did this and kill him.”
The door was opened behind you and soon Finn entered the room. You gave your little brother the death glare you were known for. He shouldn’t get the idea he was allowed to talk about what he found out.
You should be raging right now, but all you could do was laugh. His empty threats weren’t as daunting as he thought. With nothing but spite you whistled: “I would love to see you try. I kept this a secret for over a year now and you noticed nothing. And now I can wait another year for you to find him… or I could run away… whatever you prefer.”
Now you’re pushing your luck. Finn could ruin everything, if he just said one wrong word. The palms of your hands were sweaty. It was a dangerous game you played there, but it was not like you could back out of it now. This was road of no return.
Tommy seemed to be more surprised than fuming, when he asked: “You slept with some geezers for a year now?” He respected your talent to keep it under the radar. Everybody who could shirk his rules deserved acknowledgement for putting up with this risk. Maybe he was finally realizing how much you had grown. You weren’t his little kitten anymore.
“No, not geezers, just one guy”, you corrected him: “But yes, that is true.”
You watched Tommy as he walked around the table, heading for the whiskey, while he nodded understandingly. “Mh, so you would say it’s love?”
A sign came from your lips. You already knew the answer, but you weren’t so sure, if you should say this out loud. After all, you didn’t even have a proper talk about this with Isaiah. Silence was filling the room, while you calculated your risks. If you said, you loved him and Isaiah wasn’t as serious about the relationship, you would look like an idiot. Good for you, he didn’t come to the betting shop to witness the fight between you and your brother. Finally you decided to tell everybody: “Yes, I do.”
“Good”, Tommy mumbled while he poured his whiskey: “Then you should have my blessing. Just give us the name now.” He took a sip and seemed to be amused by your embarrassment.
Talking about Isaiah, while he wasn’t present, was weird, but you knew why he stayed in the comfort of his own room. You weren’t mad at him for not running after you. This was your fight and not his. And after all your brothers were a little scary, when it comes to stuff like this.
But you had Tommy’s word now and nothing should happen to your man. You shrugged and rolled with your eyes. The fuss they made about this was still annoying.
Ada patted your shoulder and encouraged you to speak. “Do we know him?” The answer was yes, but it was also the reason, why you struggled to say it out loud.
Even John chimed in and kept pushing: “Yeah, what’s up with this fella?” He was smiling to let you know the mood had changed. Nobody was against you anymore.
“It’s…”, you started and fumbled for the seam of your dress: “It’s Isaiah.”
At first it was dead silence, while the others processed the information, then Arthur and John burst out in laughter. Finn seemed to be relieved, because he would have hated it to keep a secret like this. Your older sister was hugging you a little too tight and even Polly was smiling.
Tommy had a smug on his face when he muttered: “If that’s the case, then you should have your happiness.”
“Isaiah is a fine fella. You will be alright”, hummed Arthur. Apparently everybody was happy with your choice. You just had to stand up for yourself.
It felt like a huge weight was lifted off your shoulders and then you could laugh about it too. But suddenly you remember that Isaiah was still waiting for his death in his room. “I should go and let him of the hook”, you fluted and already went to the door when you heard Tommy said: “Don’t get pregnant or he has to marry you.”
