A coach—-even one as meritorious as Terry Obrien—-cannot do the work for you—cannot do the sparring for you, cannot do the hill sprints for you, cannot do the shadow boxing, heavy bag work, etc. for you—it is the mold, the primordial soup, for leading yourself—in all aspects of life. Those of you who have heard me talk about AI have heard me talk about Alpha-Go’s five-round go match with Lee Sedol in 2016. During the second game it played the infamous move 37–a surprising move which egregiously defied convention—and ultimately won the game for it—but was so unorthodox that the players and commentators thought there might be a glitch in the machine. Monarch butterflies begin their autumn migration from Northeast US/Canada to Southwest Mexico every year anew—each migration is a new generation—they can’t learn the route from their parents. Instead, they rely on a genetic clock stored in their antennae and the position of the sun relative to the horizon to navigate. The point here is having faith in yourself—one obvious question a lot of people have for me is why I promote bodybuilding and not boxing—because boxing was never about a career for me. It was—is—about having order; about being in control of my emotions. I have a constantly active mind that can and has worked against me in the past—-the fighting helps me remain grounded, in the driver’s seat, RESPONDING to events and circumstances instead of REACTING to them.
