Mikio Ueda 100-Men Kumite (attempt)
The 100-man kumite is one of the most difficult undertakings in martial arts. It is exactly as it sounds - one blackbelt going 100 rounds of kumite against 100 similarly skilled opponents. The list of people who have successfully accomplished this is small. Mikio Ueda is THE world champion in Kyokushin karate and he only made it up to 60 before the doctors wouldn't let him continue.
Speaking of Mikio Ueda, after a brief stint in MMA, Ueda is following many other great Karatekas and taking his skills to kickboxing. Ueda will make his kickboxing debut on the ReBOOT~K-1 ReBIRTH~ card this Saturday (Sept. 9) which will air on DAZN outside of Japan. His opponent will be former K-1 cruiserweight champion K-Jee.

93全日本格關技選手権大会 AKA: Land of a 1000 Armbars `93
Oh man, I am hype. Finally got these VHS converted. We are going back to the land of a 1000 Armbars! First up: 93全日本格關技選手権大会 -- 第8回リアルファイティングトーナメント!!
They show a bit of the year before competition, the `92 edition which I have also never seen before and it looks deliciously juicy.
Pretty sure this is the head of the organization. Not sure who he actually is, but this parade of mismatches and brutality has entertained me for more than 25 years. どうもありがとうございました!!
Running up volcanic mountains, standing under waterfalls, shadowboxing, group photos. Y'know, just bros being bros - guys being guys.
A quick run down of previous years, 86 and 88 looked lit AF.
Some straight up Tekken shit being thrown with no regard for their own brains and necks.
A quick rundown of the rules, while people are getting wrecked and suplexed in the background. One 3 minute round, 10 count KOs, open hand to the face only.
1) the match will last 3 minutes with a 2 minutes in overtime.
2) Fists, elbows, knife hands, head butts, and attacks to the face and back of the head by a fighter are illegal, or attacks to the face on the ground.
2b) From the semi-finals onwards, elbow attacks to the face will also be allowed.
3) Fighters are allowed 10 seconds to throw/takedown, punch, kick or knee, but palm/elbow attacks to the face after grabbing are illegal.
4) When there is a difference of 20 or more in physical values of height & weight, the lighter fighter can use groin strikes 🤣
5) Direct attacks on downed opponents, attacks from behind, and throws that directly damage the neck or back of the head are prohibited.❓❔
6) All joint-locking and choking techniques are valid, but "ground fighting" is limited to 2 times with/within 25 seconds each in one round.
7) [UNINTELLIGIBLE] - Something about 5 seconds.
8) [More Unintelligible] - something about a give up and 5 seconds and three to win?
9) After / in the semi-finals, only if the difference in effective points... is 1 - the match will go into overtime.
The array of young men are here at the Fukouka Budokan to witness the beefy smacks and fluttering white gis in their early 90s best. A cheerful looking place even now!
Here it is today:
`93 All Japan Martial Arts Championship Tournament - the sign says - simple and to the point.
The 100+ fighters are lined up, some black swans in the sea of white dogi clad karatekas.
And with that, we have the first matches coming up in a future post!

Dear Professor;
This is what my wife Fay wears under her karategi when she competes in full-contact kyokushin tournaments.
Under knockdown karate rules, fighters try to down an opponent with strike anywhere below the neck. Ippon-Gachi (full point victory) is awarded when a kick, an elbow strike, a punch or any technique vigorously downs the opponent for 3 or more seconds.
Fay hardens her body through countless hours of training--but so do her opponents. This means most fights go to decision--an outcome Fay finds very dissatisfying. "There's no thrill like watching your opponent bend over or go to the ground from a good strike," she says.
So since there is no way to harden breasts and the rules only allow soft protective cups, competitors aim at their opponent's breasts a lot. "At my level, it's basically a titfight," she confided. "And it turns things sexual. The winner is the one with the best chest--or at least it's the perception--so winners will often want to demonstrate their superiority on the loser's boyfriend or husband. This is why I never lose when you come to see me fight."
"But this means you--?"
"Yes. I've given many titjobs to my opponents' boyfriends. I hope you don't mind."
"Mind? I think it's totally HOT! Do you make the loser watch?"
"Always."

Hit up a Japanese VHS reseller site for these "Knockdown Karate vs Japan" events that I've lost the VHS copies some years back. I've seen '94 & '95 making the rounds but never '93, so this will be fun to watch.
So gonna have my roomie out in Toyama mail these out to me across the big water. Once I get them, I will have them digitized and into the hands of the wise and knowing.
