can u talk more abt his apparent affairs w teachers and relationship w sex in general? so many ppl gloss over that bit
of course! i'll link a couple posts for preface, although i'll probably paraphrase some stuff anyways.
[my commentary on sex and consent in saltburn.]
i received an ask regarding farleigh's queerness the other day, to which i tied in this little tidbit about farleigh's affirs with teachers. the explicitly male/male language that felix used when recounting farleigh's sexcapades with teachers was interesting to me. farleigh is pansexual (as stated in the screenplay), but felix uses male/male language exclusively. part of this could be the erasure of pansexual or bisexual reality. people either exclude the homosexual aspect of someone's identity, or the heterosexual aspect. but this could also mean that farleigh did only harbor affairs with male teachers.
that would be an interesting complex to think about. although women in positions of power are absolutely capable of abusing that power and asserting dominance over others, men have a different dynamic within that. the fact is, farleigh does things to gain the affections of other people, because he isn't automatically handed that affection. farleigh does play into teacher/student dynamics, whether it's overtly sexual or not. you can see this in the tutor scene and the brief montage moment where fareligh is sitting on the floor in front of the tutor, while they both ignore oliver. consider it an investment, of sorts. there's always a possibility that a white teacher will have academic bias against you, and the need to mitigate that is strangling sometimes. teachers are also just dicks. i find myself in "teacher's pet" positions for a number of reasons, a few of them are bias related.
where it gets complicated is the sex aspect specifically. if it is true that farleigh has been expelled from an absurd number of schools specifically for harboring teacher/student sexual affairs, then this is can really only be perceived as compulsive. also, can i just say, the fact that farleigh was expelled instead of the teacher being fired is disgusting. i kinda wanna call this evidence of discrimination, as well. queerness and perceived sexual deviancy, blackness and the constant inability to be seen as human and innocent. arghgh. i digress. the fact is, if farleigh truly was harboring sexual affairs with teachers for his own benefit and that alone, then he wouldn't have made the mistake so frequently. he would've recognized that the disadvantages outweighed the benefits and found other ways of playing teacher's pet. archie talked about the quickstart dynamic and said that although it was ambiguously consensual, farleigh is attracted to and aroused by power dynamics. many people are. where that compulsive need to buy into power dynamics comes from, i'm not sure. it could be a lot of things.
the neglectful nature of farleigh's upbringing could've resulted in a need for validation and attention from those who are in a position of authority. farleigh's queerness could've resulted in an internalized feeling of perversion that was then externalized through a desire to be taken advantage of. the nature of submission is also often linked to a need for control in other areas of life, and therefore relinquishing control in sexual dynamics. some marginalized people play into eroticization because it can be more validating than exclusion. many people learn to crave their own objectification, and it's often a manifestation of sexual trauma or other forms of trauma. if i get really convoluted and let my angst-fanfiction brain run wild, i start to imagine what environments farleigh was in throughout his childhood. as archie said, farleigh was involved in overly "mature" conversations and situations through his mother. what that could mean for farleigh's perception of sex, nobody knows. i can let my imagination go insane though. i can imagine a lot of weird scenarios. those are all conjecture, of course.
i'm just going to conclude that whatever sexual complexes farleigh has, they're not healthy. i don't think that they should be fetishized or ignored. i think that they're relevant to farleigh and oliver's on-screen dynamic, especially considering oliver was in a position of power over farleigh when they had sex.

𝐁𝐔𝐂𝐊𝐘 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐄. Ironically, considering his service as a soldier during World War II in the 107th Infantry Regiment. One might assume his story followed the typical trajectory of a veteran—a man who had served and preserved, giving his all until he had nothing left to lose nor gain.
Bucky faced wars in waves, losing his sense of direction as he battled the currents. Maybe the placidity he yearned for was because of the instabilities and perplexities he'd witnessed, though the peace he needed went far beyond that. From the moment he was reborn into this world, all he ever wanted was to find solace within the hurricane that had upended his life.
Bucky sought peace, yes. Peace within the chaos of his fractured realities.
The sky lit up, a white veil enveloping the night's somber hues. Its brilliance lingered for a fleeting moment before the darkness regained its dominion. Sometimes, Bucky wondered if the storms were a remedy or a curse. When the sky, such as tonight, wailed and bled, and when the clouds tore themselves up to bits and pieces, was the chaos some twisted form of peace? Or was it his fractured mind pitifully attempting to shroud the truths with another veiled deception?
Rain dropped down in fervor, droplets finding themselves on Bucky’s skin. A part of him told him to move away and give the sky some space to grieve. Another rebutted that he should stay to remind the heavens that they’re not alone.
He raised his head, feeling the water droplets on his face, allowing them to delicately trace his features. The storm was ravenous, tumultuous, mutinous—everything a winter turbulence should be, everything the winter soldier in him was.
And yet, the damned poets he’d read about weren’t too far off in their exuberant analogies, comparing a winter storm to a peaceful spring. As polarizing as it was, there was a certain peace to its violence—a peace that Bucky could experience extrospectively but never conversely.
“James,” he heard behind him. This voice, perhaps, was the nearest semblance of personal tranquility he could reach. It permeated his skin, nestled in every nucleus, exuding an air of calmness and hope. He cherished it when she called him by his name. It was her personal term of endearment. To the world, he was several things: Sergeant Barnes, Bucky, and The Winter Soldier. But to Y/N, his precious Y/N, he was James. And he loved her even more for the simple yet profound reminder.
“I’m scared,” he admitted in a shy whisper, playing with his fingers. Truths came easy with her, despite how he grappled with them in his solitary battles. “Going there… going there will trigger a lot of bad memories. It might even trigger him, too.”
Y/N stepped closer, placing her palm on his left arm. His metal arm. She didn’t miss the way Bucky shut his eyes, which is why her thumb traced invisible shapes on the prosthetic. “You don’t have to go there, baby. You don’t have to do anything if your heart’s not in it.”
“But you’ll be there. I can’t…. I won’t for the life of me let you wander around in that monstrous prison world without me. Especially with all those people there.” Bucky’s lower lip trembled as he spoke. His blue eyes harbored a thousand emotions. Peace, fortitude, courage… they all fought waves of anguish and despair. But love, concern, and fear all remained afloat.
“James,” Y/N whispered delicately, framing his cheeks with her gentle hands. Bucky nuzzled in her open palms, his lips brushing against her skin. His eyes captured her in an everlasting glance, filled with so much devotion. “I don’t want you to relive your worst nightmare because of me. Yes, you are our primary knowledge hub when it comes to Hydra, but you’re also a part of our family. We would never want to harm you. I would never want to harm you or cause you despair.”
“You could never,” Bucky answered, his hands falling from the railing and finding their place on her hips. He suddenly became aware that she was wearing no more than his Henley and a pair of pajama bottoms in the middle of this storm. So, he pulled her closer and buried her face in his chest.
“I can go with Steve, maybe even Nat. You don’t have to do this. You–”
“It’s not the memories I fear most, angel.”
“Then what is it?” Y/N asked, raising her head to meet his eyes without stepping out of his embrace. “Is it those soldiers they have created?”
Bucky stared at the falling rain, realizing that the two of them had drifted away from the sliding door’s overhang, which shielded Y/N. He tried to step back, but she must’ve falsely interpreted it as his attempt at fleeing because she tightened her hold on him.
He brushed a strand of her damp hair behind her ear, his thumbs tracing her pink cheek. “What if he comes back?”
“Say his name aloud,” Y/N encouraged. “It’s okay, baby.”
He gulped, closing his eyes for a moment. “The Winter Soldier.” Heaven knew he didn’t want to, and maybe that’s why this whole storm had assaulted New York this evening.
Y/N, on the other hand, didn’t seem to think the same. Calmly, she lifted herself on her toes to kiss his beard, nestling her head in the junction between his neck and shoulder. “The Winter Soldier is what you make him out to be.”
“He’s a murderer,” Bucky spat, his hold on Y/N tightening as if the simple mention of the Soldat would breathe him back to life.
Y/N shook her head. “He’s you.”
“He’s not me, Y/N!” Bucky pried himself away, giving her an indignant look. “He’s a homicidal menace that will not hesitate to rip you apart without a second thought!”
Y/N tried to step closer, but Bucky flinched. He involuntarily retreated back, his cerulean eyes rimmed with despair and hurt. Y/N shook her head, locking her eyes with his. “The Winter Soldier is James Buchanan Barnes. A man that has never stopped fighting, not even for a second. He may be bruised, erratic, and damaged. But he’s not a monster. Not in my story.”
“Y/N,” Bucky all but growled, keeping as much distance between himself and the girl. “You have no idea how twisted these words sound. You won’t even have a chance to take them back or change your mind when he all but attacks you and rips your heart out of your chest like some goddamn fucking prize without even taking his eyes off yours!”
“My heart is his for the taking.” Bucky’s mind spiraled out of control. “As much as it is yours. He and you are one. What I feel for you, I feel for him.”
“Don’t, Y/N.”
Ignoring his comment, Y/N took his hands in hers before he had the chance to run away. “If you cannot see your true worth through your own eyes, James, then see it through my own. Every part of you is worthy. You and The Winter Soldier are heroes in your unique ways, each fighting different battles to find a missing piece of yourself. So, if you’re so afraid that being there will trigger the worst parts of you, then I will whisper to you both all the truth you need to hear until you find your way back to me. Back home.”
“You’re my home,” Bucky whispered, caressing her cheek. He dipped his head, his nose caressing Y/N’s. A second passed, and he allowed himself to bask in her warmth, losing himself in the ardency of her love. His lips delicately traced her berry-flavored ones, claiming them against his own. “I love you,” he almost cried, fearing he might lose her. His mouth wrapped around her lower lip, sucking it fervently and inhaling in all the devotion he held toward his girl. “You're my sanctuary, my peace. And I don’t want my own violent dispositions to threaten the home that I’ve built with you.”
“James,” Y/N mumbled breathlessly, tears on the edge of her lashes. She pressed one more fervent kiss against his lips, resting her hand on his heart to remind him once more that he could feel. That he was human. “I love you in all your nuances and dispositions. No matter who you are or who you think you ought to be, you'll always be my home."
Bucky smiled endearingly, taking Y/N’s hand in his. He kissed her knuckles, one by one, before planting his lips on her wrist. With a final glance at her eyes, Bucky led her inside their shared bedroom, relishing in the feeling of her between his arms.
He closed his eyes with the images of her in his mind, forgetting all about Hydra and The Winter Soldier. It was tomorrow’s nightmare, but Y/N was tonight’s dream, and that’s all that mattered.

*grabbing you* worldbuilding is characterbuilding. every view of a building or a street is filtered through your character's viewpoint. extrospection is as effective a tool for fleshing out a character as introspection. nothing is untouched by your pov's thoughts and memories. i know what you mean though it can be a slog
This is a very good point but god it CAN be such a slog

hey if you're on the asexual and/or aromantic spectra, it's genuinely so cool !! like, the a-spectrum is quite unique, interesting and diverse... and it's not so easy for everyone to understand.
this is a concept that takes a lot introspection AND extrospection at the very same time. you'll need to think about yourself and your life so far a LOT. you'll need to shift your world view - to break down the very definition of attraction (romantic, sexual, platonic, and so on) which is surprisingly a feat! we spend so much of our lives not questioning what attraction actually Means, we just know we go through it. so to step out of yourself and dissect that is challenging, but so rewarding to do, and i personally find that impressive.
it's so easy to fall back on what is normal and expected of you, but that's not what you did. even if you aren't out or 100% positive where you fall on these spectra (dont let anyone tell you that you need a label).
if no one else is proud of you for this, i certainly am, and you should be too

questioning szpd culture is reading every personal acct of living with the disorder you can find and writing down all the common symptoms so you can really analyze whether or not you have it (and subsequently noticing that excessive introspection is a common theme, but brushing it off because technically you're doing extrospection and that's different, don't worry about it)

listen i get the transformers reference tags are fun and all but you seriously sound like a conspiracy theorist by tagging so many of my post with "YOU ARE BEING DECEIVED" without the context of that phrase.
OH!! I didn't see this until now!! I'll explain this tomorrow after I wake up if I can remember, thank you for asking!! If I saw this earlier I would've responded sooner!!
There is a lot and I just got my daily allotment of tired extrospection out of me, like I said if I noticed this sooner I'd have a better immediate response to it but unfortunately it will require me fetching some old notes buried in a backup hard drive due to a recent OS swap so I'll need to have a little more energy to handle Windows vhds with any amount of care. Thank you for asking though!!

hi :3 so ik you've said farleigh probably leans into his visible queerness as a way to take control of the way in which hes othered, which leads me to a question. how dyou think his journey of realizing hes queer wouldve gone? like what wouldve been his awakening, is he fully cis, how dyou think hed describe his own queerness if asked? i wanna know your thoughts :0
HEADCANONS HEADCANONS HEADCANONS YIPEE. this post is, obviously, mostly conjecture and extrospection.
archie's audition material was a character having a phone conversation with his mother. in this phone call, the character is describing different sexual encounters with men specifically. assuming this applies to farleigh as a character (considering farleigh is queer and emerald believed this monologue piece was a good reference for an actor for farleigh), i think that queerness is a casual subject between farleigh and frederica.
HOWEVER, queerness is then boiled down to sex. when elspeth is very obnoxiously discussing queerness, she's also referring to queer sex. what we can infer from this movie is that the cattons tend to condense intimacy into sex without any genuine emotion. they have emotions and experience emotional relationships, but they're sort of shrouded in small talk, gossip, transactional dynamics, and other forms of avoidance. this is why oliver's use of genuine emotional vulnerability was so impactful with the cattons.
so, we sort of have this condensed version of queerness in which we view it as exclusively sexual. this adheres to straightness as well. when felix is talking about farleigh's sexcapades with teachers, he uses terminology that would imply these are specifically male/male dynamics. this further complicates farleigh's queerness. his attraction to men is not only perceived as strictly sexual but is also now seen as deviant. a possible parallel to this would be how the cattons see venetia's sexuality. a queer person and a woman, their inability to escape rampant sexualization.
i can see farleigh having the traditional "oh shit, i like men" realization, and all the discomfort and stress that comes with it. i also think that it would be valid to imagine that farleigh just... didn't say anything about it. like, clearly the cattons and his parents knew or found out that oh shit, he likes men. but if queerness is to be strictly a sexual or experimental endeavor, then why have any serious conversation about it at all? archie says that his parents doted on him in a way, but at the same time, they were neglectful. when he wasn't left to his own devices, he was being dragged along to dinner parties with overly mature conversation. all of this leads me to infer that maybe farleigh learned to see his own queerness as a casual affair. homophobia exists and he would've felt and heard that prejudice throughout his life, which might've resulted in an internalized feeling of... perversion?
as for gender identity, i think farleigh would have a slightly ambiguous approach. maybe nothing that people would consider trans, but definitely a less-traditional gender expression. with farleigh's mom being the only real connection he has to the world he's currently existing in, i think he might feel a need to emulate her in some way. i can picture farleigh sneaking into her room to try on her lipstick, perfumes, bath robes, high heels. you feel me? archie described frederica as someone who was probably a model in the past, who reflected the same eccentric style and glam as the rest of the cattons. i can sort of see her being like an older venetia. farleigh, as a queer person, might see femininity as both armor and a tool. in the same way that farleigh seems to treat the other ways in which he is different, i think he would amplify the showstopping "exotic" uniqueness of his queerness while hiding how it truly effects his identity.
i think farleigh's expression of his queerness is similar to everything else he does; "toeing the line," while still indulgent. his relationship with authority figures (teachers) is one of those things that seems like an unhealthy result of internalized homophobia and poor self-esteem in regard to sexuality. not to mention the power dynamic. he's in a position of lesser privilege within most english upper-class academic spaces. i'm getting off track.
i don't know what else to say since all of this is, again, conjecture. take all of this as you will, finn.

So, do you think Sasha kinda is like Zuko on Avatar in a sense too? Sure Zuko got more time for his abusive dad than Sasha for her family, but the core is the same on redemption and all.
Both are
obsessed with their goals in season 1
- are on the run alongside someone serving as a parent figure to them (Grime and Iroh) in season 2
have a moment of bonding with the heroes and seemingly considering redemption before betraying everyone in the season 2 finales
have their full on redemptions in season 3
Heck, it's telling that Aang is the one who ends up defeating Ozai in the end instead of Zuko (who never even faces him in the finale).
TL:DR The two share oversimplified plot similarities (you literally use a third act redemption as evidence when like... That's just literally narrative structure?) but the details of their characters and what their arcs are about are drastically different. It does warrant comparison, as two villains turned good guys by finding peace with their worlds but the details for both are actually very different, allowing for both to be great shows of this sort of general archtype. Their 'core' similarity as you posit is really just a writing trope or narrative structure much more than it is specifically about the two and their arcs.
I never considered the Grime and Sasha parallel though what's fun with that is Grime is absolutely not like Uncle Iroh. Iroh pushed Zuko's better nature while Grime actually fuels Sasha's negative nature. He introduces her to effectively the calculus of war while Zuko's father is the one who did it for him. It's an interesting contrast and part of why I say that while Grime didn't mean to, he wasn't actually all that healthy for Sasha to know, taking her darkness to extremes. Also, 'obsessed with their goals' is just not right for Sasha in S1. Her goal is to get home with her friends but she is explicitly not in a rush to do so. She's here to have fun because she is incredibly self serving. She uses her perceived status as hero for her friend as an excuse. That making her happy must make everyone happy. Meanwhile, Zuko isn't self serving beyond wanting to literally be allowed to go home. He's never doing things just to treat himself or make himself happy until S2 which is explicitly a part of his arc. That he actually needs to care more about himself than what others desire of him and find his own definitions for things like honor, leading to the evil of the Fire Nation's expectations and his long buried, good heart coming to war with each other.
Meanwhile, Sasha's arc is actually much more extrospective than it is introspective but in a really good way. She needs to learn to stop playing in this fantasy of hers that she has created where the world is her toy. Realize other people matter and have desires and feelings that she needs to stop gaslighting, gatekeeping or girlbossing against. That her happiness does not mean the happiness for all.
Honestly, it makes it so that if she shares anything with an Avatar character... It's probably Azula. And why shouldn't it be? Azula is someone who takes pleasure in controlling people and genuinely believes that anyone can be crushed or used for her own desires. She treats even her friends like pawns and Reunion shows that Sasha isn't much better than that. That Anne is still subject to SASHA'S whims.
The difference is that while Sasha sees herself as a hero and so can be confronted with how she hurts people and cares enough about Anne to be motivated to change, Azula believes herself to be a queen. It's actually part of why becoming the Fire Lord fucks with her so hard. This is the day she was always waiting for but the goal post becomes impossible as her father discards it. This thing she has always wanted is now ash and so she loses her mind trying to pretend that it still matters despite her still being number two. Still not being the best despite the fact that she has always perceived herself as above EVERYONE.
Buuuuut, especially with current analytical trends I see, no one is going to think about Sasha with Azula. They don't share enough narrative parallels for anyone to consider it despite how much their characters have parallels. Both have two friends who have varying levels of loyalty to her and differing skill sets. Both are manipulators, both for fun and profit. They will destroy you if you upset them but also believe that once loyalty is given to them, they no longer need to earn that loyalty again.
These are all genuinely character based similarities and based on overall behavior... Which I think people struggle with analyzing nowadays. When I see people talk about arcs, it's mostly with the big ticket moments or the like. With the episodes everyone loves rather than an actual aggregate of the character. This is exactly the sort of thinking that leads to people say Anne doesn't have an arc in S1 or makes people think Marcy treated Amphibia as nothing but a game because the literal only episode they're analyzing is True Colors and specifically her speech.
My blogs are as long as they because I look more for the aggregate. I am as cruel to TOH's character arcs because those writers themselves want to throw away elements of the characters and ignore the aggregate when that's REALLY important.
So yeah, from a very basic, narrow view, Sasha and Zuko seem similar... But only because they're redeemed villains. Zuko in S2 explicitly NEEDS time away from Aang in order to grow. It's why he reverts at the end when presented his prize. Losing the hunt lets him breathe. Meanwhile, Sasha's exile with Grime is not so good for her mental state. She doubles down because she showed a moment of weakness and HATES it. She is at her absolute worst in S2... Until reunited with Anne and Marcy who make her question things. That alone is a DRASTIC difference in how their arcs narratively function as for Zuko it shows what he could be if he chose peace while with Sasha it shows how much she genuinely does care about her girls, even if her need for control and to keep her fantasy intact guarantees she won't change until she hits absolute rock bottom.
The Turning Point for Sasha, pun intended, is when she has nothing left. When she cannot support her fantasy at all and keep doing this. When she realizes that her care for Anne and want to be a hero means that she can't keep only serving herself. Not when she has only brought misery to others for so long. For Zuko, it's when he has EVERYTHING. A hot goth girlfriend, the respect of his people, his 'honor back, etc. but the point is that the Fire Nation is choosing war. Choosing death. Things that Zuko can no longer enjoy and so he has to make the incredibly difficult choice of throwing it all away because he cannot be a part of The Fire Nation anymore. He exiled himself in S2 just as much as Ozai exiled him in S1.
It still makes them interesting to compare, this blog has been a lot of fun for me to write, because they are both villains turned good in very interesting ways... But they aren't the same. Not even close. Every step on their journey is incredibly different simply by the nature of what drives them and who they are as a character. Which... Good. That's how it should be.
The only times you should be able to claim two characters are practically the same is if they're both kind of boring.

#TaxidermyArt ~ A piece about introspection, extrospection, appearances, facades, reverie, illusion, realization, denial, reality, discontentment, and the often dark inner recesses of the human psyche.
TITLE: Chasing Demons MATERIALS: Tanned albino and melanistic squirrel hides over a hand-sculpted armature with antique ormolu vanity mirror. I began incorporating the bodies of animals into my art in the late 1980's when I was working on my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The philosophical foundation of my work demands the use of only humanely acquired animals. It also includes a strict "waste not want not" policy of recycling as much of the animal as possible into art. My staples include roadkill, naturally deceased animals, and wild game remnants that were destined for landfills. As is the case with many of the animals I work with, these two squirrels were donated to me. The pelts of both animals were severely damaged and unusable for regular taxidermy mounts. The melanistic (black) squirrel was roadkill and its rear end was not salvageable due to road-rash. The albino (white) squirrel had an extreme case of mange; its head and chest were virtually bald. So I combined what good parts remained of each animal into a single taxidermy sculpture.
There are pockets of these color mutations around the country where they are more common than in other areas, but throughout the rest of the United States both are a relatively rare occurrence. According to one study one out of every 100,000 squirrels is albino and one out of every 10,000 is melanistic. I have only had a handful of each come my way throughout my career. Because they are such a precious acquisition in my world, I knew I couldn’t let either of these two beautiful creatures go to waste. More about my art and the ethics it arose from at www.Sarina-Brewer.com
