U-PICK No.4 Delayed!

I'm sorry anime fans, but I decided to delay U-PICK No.4 to April 28 to May 5 (Monkey D. Luffy's birthday)* since I heard that NINJA KAMUI will have a thirteenth episode. I thought it would end after twelve episodes, but I guessed wrong. Also, I decided to extend the Emergency Occurrence Filler Arc of Toon Time Theater by one more weekend to make room for the thirteenth NINJA KAMUI episode. Once NINJA KAMUI ends its run, I will go back to Saturday mornings and replace it with the third (and final) season of the 2019 FRUITS BASKET series to coincide with Mothers' Day. (TMS and TV TOKYO, when can we FRUITS BASKET fans get a spinoff series featuring children and descendants of the original cast and make Tohru a mother for once?)

Here's the catch; I won't reveal the lineups for the next weekends once I live-stream the U-PICK results. I am leaving a leeway until I get to broadcast the U-PICK's winner at the right time.

Not to mention I will air marathons this May. The ONE PIECE Marathon will be live-streamed May 4 at 9 PM PDT with seven episode premieres from the Wano Country arc. This marathon will happen the night before Monkey D. Luffy's birthday and will serve as the final marathon for Toon Time Theater's Emergency Occurrence Filler Arc. The U-PICK arc will resume on May 11 with a season premiere of FRUITS BASKET (2019) at 7 AM PDT and a HI SCORE GIRL Season 2 Marathon at 7:30 AM PDT with Rounds 16-24, concluding Toon Time Theater's run of HI SCORE GIRL.

During the Emergency Occurrence Filler Arc, I shook up my lineups for the best. Dropping THE SLAYERS, SWORD ART ONLINE and HI SCORE GIRL was a wise decision, and I had to make room for more Pokémon, DRAGON BALL Z KAI and an additional slot for IGPX only to burn through the series faster until Mothers' Day approaches. I recently ran out of BAKUGAN episodes to live-stream, so I plan on adding back HAIKYU!! this Sunday to serve as a 2-in-1 E/I sports program. Thankfully I ran marathons of SWORD ART ONLINE (the remainder of the Aincrad arc) and DRAGON BALL Z KAI (the first nine Saiyan Saga episodes) to get them out of the way and make sure I am caught up.

* The poll's new dates are now May 11-May 18, and during U-PICK I will not only live-stream the FruBa premiere and HI SCORE GIRL marathon on Mothers' Day, but I will also live-stream a premiere episode of X-MEN and a six-episode X-MEN marathon the weekend after. I will announce U-PICK's winner right before I live-stream the X-MEN episode premiere.

Another avenue I want to explore in an Amity Park is Weird scenario is all the niche sub-cultures going on.

There is absolutely NO WAY there isn't a thriving goth community in Amity Park. They're holding picnics every full moon. They're holding crafting sessions in their friends' basements. They're adopting ghost animals left and right: eight-legged dogs and blob-cats, skeletal fish and neon bearded dragons.

There's a young man called Raphael who performs live music every week at a dance club with his band: he's got a myriad of shiny piercings, and a phone camera roll full of his rabbits, Morningstar and Salem. Perhaps those ghosts are bad business like the Fentons say, but the club's never felt more alive.

The scene and emo kids are multiplying at a rapid rate. The punks and grunge folks are doing shit with textiles that makes every quilting grandmother in a five mile radius swoop in to pass on their skills. Josie and Betty, old friends who periodically upload photos online of their handmade lace, suddenly gain an influx of young folks who want to learn how to make their own ghoulish patterns.

There's a new group peeling off from the goths that dress like the embodiment of Halloween– all bones, pumpkin orange and lengths of costume jewelry.

The historical costuming community is alive and well in these times, and they fall upon the few ghosts from times past willing to share knowledge like starving wolves. Their minds are full of patterning-math and fabric prices, and their excitement is, quite literally, infectious.

A revolution starts up in food service: a great many restaurants closed or moved to follow the many people who left Amity after the ghosts first came. A pair of brothers open a restaurant that has the best Polish food around: people politely don't comment on how the owners are dressed in clothes a century out of date or how their eyes gleam. Two cat cafes open, one space themed and another with loose definitions of what counts as a "cat." Assorted coffee and tea shops dot the landscape: some serve donuts, some have cupcakes, and others have breakfast wraps, sandwiches or savory hand pies.

People that can't afford to open a restaurant sell food out of their homes, advertised by cardboard signs with phrases like CAKES FOR $10, and BARBEQUE RIBS FOR SALE painted on them in gigantic bright letters. High school students bring in bags of cookies they made the night before and completely sell out of stock before the day is done. One woman's house has no signage and yet is known by word of mouth to be a herbalist, selling tins of homemade tea blends, flowers, assorted plant clippings, and cough drops.

Someone down the street of Casper High sells small batches of eco-friendly soap at a nearby corner store.

During summer time, lemonade stands are everywhere. Some of the lemonade is made with the strange fruits from one of the parks: no one dies, so it's fine.

The Farmer's Market has gotten... intense.

Snack ideas for pet dreamers/regressors!

DISCLAIMER: This is strictly ideas for snacks, not meals! You gotta eat three balanced meals! Anyways, onward!

Kitty regressors/dreamers: Cats eat fish and many cat foods contain chicken, so goldfish crackers and chicken flavored crackers can make fun snacks for kitty regressors! People used to feed cats cream, though that's only safe in small portions and must only be done on occasion. Going off of that, maybe you could have a cup of yoghurt as a kitty snack! Using cereal like kibble could also be fun!

Pup regressors/dreamers: Like mentioned above, using cereal as kibble could be fun. Also, there are those Scooby Snacks biscuits that look like dog biscuits! Dogs also eat meat, so jerky could be a good snack too!

Wolf regressors/dreamers: Like with pup snacks, you could use Scooby Snacks or jerky as your wolf snack! Wolves have also been known to eat rabbits, so you could use those Annie's snacks that are shaped like rabbits, too. Wolves have also been known to eat berries on occasion (usually when prey is scarce), so you could also try berries as your wolf snack, especially if you prefer to have a vegetarian/vegan option!

Fox regressors/dreamers: Foxes eat a variety of things, such as rabbits, bugs, small birds, and occasionally berries. So, you could try chicken flavored crackers or Annie's rabbit shaped snacks. You can also eat berries as a vegan option. As for something resembling bugs, you could try gummy worms or cooked grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are expensive though, and if you're shopping online, make sure you're buying grasshoppers cooked for people, not as reptile food!

Bunny regressors/dreamers: Rabbits of course eat fruits and vegetables! I think real life rabbits can only eat certain kinds of fruits and vegetables, and even then, they're actually supposed to eat greens and can only eat fruits and vegetables on occasion, but you're a regressor/dreamer, so you can eat any kind of fruit or veggie you like! Fruit gummies and veggie straws are also good ideas too!

Bear regressors/dreamers: I know a few things bears eat are salmon, deer, berries, and honey. So, bear regressors can try eating goldfish crackers, deer jerky, and berries! As for honey, I'd imagine anything with honey works.

Dragon regressors/dreamers: Dragons are known for their love of treasure, so chocolate coins and ring pops are possible options! If my books are correct, dragons are known to often eat fish and livestock, so goldfish crackers and jerky are good options, too.

Bat regressors/dreamers: Different kinds of bats consume different things, including fruits, insects, and blood. So, some possibilities are fruit, fruit gummies, gummy worms, cooked grasshoppers, and red fruit punch or red soda!

the scaremongering culture around food additives is so exhausting. yes obviously there’s real stories from very recently of companies adding very dangerous stuff to foods like with the lead applesauce but it feels like they’re chasing the dragon on making you afraid of EVERY additive in food, including stuff that is unsubstantiated in their claims of being dangerous.

i just saw one on instagram from an account that someone recommended i follow as im becoming more cognisent of my diet and this person would basically post the full ingredients list of store-bought or chain restaurant foods and flag which ingredients were bad. in many posts that account claimed that soybean and canola oil are bad for various reasons. i can’t find shit to back that up. are they as healthy as olive oil? no, olive oil is pretty much the gold standard of oil. but will canola and soybean oil kill you? unless you’re drinking them by the cup then i can’t seem to find any evidence to support that.

the kicker that made me unfollow this person was one of their posts flagging malic acid as a bad added ingredient. yknow, malic acid? the naturally produced acid found in apples and various fruits? where the only potential health hazard is if excessive amounts are on sour candy it can lead to mouth irritation? yeah, do you wanna know what it was in for this post? a burrito. probably barely enough to help suggest a tang in one of the ingredients. it’s not gonna fucking harm you, jesus christ.

anyway listen to doctors and dietitians, never ever ever trust affiliate marketers, do your research on who it is that’s telling you good advice online, and go eat a burrito.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon ⭐⭐

I followed this book from it's conception, through it's editing, and hyped it's publishing date on twitter. I was genuinely excited to read it, and really thought and hoped I'd enjoy it. I wasn't a huge fan of what I read of The Bone Season, but everyone assured me this was different! And to be fair, it was! I think in my heart, though, I knew the truth because I waited so long to read this and I'm sorry to say I did not have a great time.

My problem with Samantha Shannon seems to be she creates these wonderful worlds full of interesting magic systems and characters that are fun to follow, but there's too much crammed into the book as a whole. In The Bone Season, I felt the Rephaim were unnecessary. In Priory there are too many points of view. There were things I liked, this wasn't a complete waste of time, but wow they were hard to come by in the end.

What did I like?

-Ead! Ead was clearly the main character and I think it would have worked better if it was just Her Book (I'd also settle for her and Tané, please Tané deserved more page time than she got) -Sabran. I'm surprised, but not really, that people didn't like her. She's complicated! She's mean! She loves deeply! She's a person! People just hate women who are mean lol -MAGIC! Magic comes from fruit that comes from the stars? It's fire and water and ice and air? NEAT! COOL! Cool magic systems seem to be SShannons strong point! -High fantasy with no sexual assault or threats of sexual assault. There was a little misogyny with the way Sabran and her line is treated for their ability to give birth (and no, one throw away line of "This is bad actually!" doesn't fix it lol) but it fit in context and considering no one was mean to women for being women I'll let it slide!

What didn't I like?

-LACK. OF. DRAGONS. yall there are dragons on the COVER, every time someone talked about this online, they added dragon emojis. So why, in the more than 800 pages, did dragons show up for maybe five pages TOTAL. Like if we went line by line and pieced all those lines together, it would maybe take up five pages. Ten if I'm being generous and include the dragons that are The Enemies. Which, by the way, -Dragons are Mean. I've discovered that I prefer dragons to be neutral to allies, I don't like dragon books where we are slaying dragons. It's nice that we have both here, no group of people? Creatures? Are a monolith, but I want more of the eastern dragons! They were pushed aside and we hardly saw them! We hardly saw any of them! If you promise me dragons, then deliver! The! Dragons!!!! -Writing style. I'm thinking maybe SShannon's writing style and I do not vibe at all. I'm not sure what it is about it, I know she doesn't like writing action scenes and so avoids them, and I love reading action scenes, but that didn't feel like the entire problem here? But something about this writing detached me from the characters. Yes I liked Ead, but I felt nothing about Tané, other tha wanting MORE of her. SShannon spent a lot of time saying not much at all, it's really rather impressive. -Tané in general. Part of the writing problem is the way the POVs were split. It was most obvious in Tané's storyline. She has everything stripped away from her, but the emotional impact wasn't there because we hardly spent any time with her. -The Priory. The book is named after it, but we're hardly there at all. I spent a good chunk of the first half wishing Ead would go back to the Priory, but once she was there, I wanted her to leave. The Prioress' motives also seemed iffy to me? Ead was right, why spend nearly ten years trying to keep Inys afloat and then go "actually! Nevermind! Let it burn!' -Plot....holes? Not so much holes but Convenient Plot. I was ready to ignore some of it, suspension of disbelief and all that, but nah I"m going to be picky now! The scene that stuck out the most was Ead being chased and hunted down and CONVENIENTLY wyrms attacked her pursuers and she was the one who got away. Or how about Niclays at the LITERAL LAST MOMENT deciding to have a change of heart because......plot has to move forward? Also. What the fuck happened to Ishari lol Tané noted Ishari was disappointed to be sent to Feather island, but said she hoped their paths would cross again one day! And then! Tané goes to Feather Island! And NO MENTION OF HER AT ALL! Or how abut Loth learning a VERY BIG VERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEIGHBORING KINGDOM AND THEN NO ONE MENTIONS IT UNTIL NEARLY THE END LIKE "OH YEAH BTW THE PRINCESS THERE IS COOL LOTH SAID SO" -Wrap Up. I didn't really mind the final Big Fight. I know even fans of the book have been disappointed, but honestly it's one of the strongest stretches of the book, even if it was a little hard to follow at times. What bothered me was after. I know I tend to be impatient when reading the final chapters of a book, the What Happened Next bits, but never have I been so annoyed as to have to read a wrap up from the POV of someone who WASN'T EVEN CONSCIOUS. I suppose it's better than a book where a single first person POV character is knocked unconscious mid battle and then the next scene is "and then everything was over" but come ON.

I know she had to edit this book down a LOT, which. Girl. It's 800 pages how was there MORE. So maybe my questions were answered in things that were cut, but I could not physically handle any more of this book. I got fatigue from her writing, I cannot handle more of it at once, but considering how long it takes her to finish a book (not a complaint! Everyone has a different pace!) I also would not have wanted to wait that long for a conclusion. There's no winning for me here. We were simply not meant to be. It's just that if I'm going to read a book that takes hundreds of pages to say nothing at all by an author that puts out a book once every few years at best, I'd read VE Schwab or Patrick Rothfuss.

I think human x human is more popular by a margine but only because there's so much of it that it overshadows any human x nonhuman sites.

Like in modern dnd, the porn industry is overrun with humans. We know this, we've been here before and humans are probably the ones who invented the concept of porn as a media.

More on world building, i like to think that humans invented the majority of the industrial revolution which resulted in skyscrapers, wifi, porn, donuts and online shopping.

Other races either grew too comfortable with magic to invest in any industry or got too used to their own old technology to ever challenge it and aim for change.

Humans are always unsatisfied with what they have, we want bigger cities, tastier food, cuter dogs and ediable juicy fruits without seeds. Faster communication methods and more access to everything everywhere at once.

Other races probably enjoyed how long it took to make a sword, how intimate it is to stitch someone a dress by hand, how lovely it is to hear any music only once a month if you're lucky.

Even now, we want faster wifi, more expansion into space, and more moon visits, we want more immersive virtual realities and ethical AI that actually helps humans rather than steal from them. We might never be satisfied even after we rebuild the heavens and pluck all the apple trees empty.

So the human x human genre spiked to the top easily. It's everywhere on porn twitter, and you need to dig really deep to find the nichie accounts the post human x nonhuman porn, even then, it's mostly wood elves and nymphs.

Each single high elf is known in their own society, if one did porn, their entire lineage would know. It's a sad toxic standards they still hold.

Meanwhile, drows are open to making porn with humans. It's just that they keep it to themselves and never share it outside drow society. Like how they hoard all their knowledge and technology.

If we're talking about loser high elf, Meluidil, he was sort of an admin on an anonymous forum that's exclusive to nonhumans where they pile together all their human x nonhuman porn they could find.

Other races do try and keep humans out of their inner circles, some popular websites do have special domians exclusive to the non-humans like in that twitch human streamer concept where you find a random link to it on elvish twitter.

But the thing is, they are hungry for human content. As much as they try to keep their circles exclusive, the second a human joins by accident or because someone else invited them, they become the center of attention and everyone is curious about you.

Humans are too good at stealing the spotlights, that's why the other races made the nonhuman club in the first place. But after a while they decided they missed your kind too much and started sharing content about humans amidst themselves.

But oh no. They're starting to act a little bit too creepy and now they can't afford to let the humans find out about this and their obssessive sexaulisation of humans so better just stay in this echo chamber with the others.

They themselves can't make up their mind if they want the humans in or out, constantly breaking their own rules and being hypocrites.

Each time a new site or circle is made, someone brings their cute human date because they're just too nice and couldn't lie to them, and suddenly everyone comes clean and starts bringing their human friends and lovers, and those humans bring their own human friends then boom the site becomes mainstream and overrun with humans

Dragonkin snack ideas

It's late at night, so here's some snack ideas for my fellow dragons out there. These snacks are meant to last for long times, can be made at home with some know how and can possibly made in bulk.

Jerky is a safe option for a meaty snack, doesn't need to be precooked, lasts a long time and can even come in other meats like turkey, deer or pork and it can be made with different spices to suit your taste! And if you know how to, you can easily make jerky at home to your taste! At minimum you need meat and a dehydrator. I still strongly recommend that you follow recipes online before experimenting.

Next up is pork rinds, a lighter snack. They're easy to find in any store, you can buy them in bulk in large containers. This is also able to be made at home, though you'd need to find cuts of pork skin to deep fry first, and I can't be certain how many of my fellow dragon kin can get access to a butcher. But still, you can buy pork rinds in almost any store!

This one is for my omnivorous dragonkin out there! Fruit! This one can be made to your liking! Fan of berries, make a berry mix! Like citrus? Make a mix with citrus fruit! The sky is the limit with your personal fruit mix! And if you don't have any ideas for your mix of fruit, then you can always start off simple with fruit cocktail!

Recently I’ve been hyperfixating on nearly a decade old show The Mentalist, and as a Hannibal girlie I’m about to lose my mind I’m going insane

I’m almost positive that the show’s premise is a whole plot reference to Red Dragon but as far as I can tell no one else has ever talked about this online. But look. lOok

- main nemesis serial killer with ‘Red’ in his serial killer name. Yes, that’s low hanging fruit, but consider:

- said serial killer with Red at the front of his name has a blind girlfriend

- this main serial killer (yes, the one with the relationship with the blind woman and who goes by Red so-and-so) has a obsession with something created by William Blake

(Yes the Great Red Dragon paintings and the poem The Tyger were made by the same man. Yes I was shocked too)

- the show itself lampshades this, as the episode prior to the one where Red John is killed is called The Great Red Dragon

- this final one is a bit more of a stretch, but combined with the others I feel I have to mention it: both Jane and Will successfully bait their respective Red serial killers to attack a person that they’re giving an interview to the press with (Panzer for Jane, and Freddy Lounds for Will)

Look at this!! I get no one talking about it now but how did no one talk about it then?? It feels like the obvious parallel but even back in the day I can’t find a single mention on the internet. I’m losing my mind someone back me up on this

Why DB's story peaked at the Cell Saga

Inspired by another recent Tumblr post on the Cell Saga.

A lot of times when I've seen talk online about where fans believe the late Akira Toriyama should've ended the original run of Dragon Ball, thus the original Dragon Ball narrative (and this is a question at all because very few fans were really satisfied with where it actually did end, with a weird ass final saga and a really weak epilogue/ending), by far the most common refrain seemed to be that "it should've ended at the Freeza Saga." Not hard to see why this is, as that was easily the most iconic saga of the entire series in Japan, with Son Goku's transformation into a Super Saiyan and domination of Freeza (hyped up as the most powerful villain Goku could ever face and also the one responsible for wiping out Goku's people and why he was on Earth to begin with) in the fight that followed being considered the high point of Goku's entire story, thus of the series on the whole. Many who loved the saga took umbrage at the arrival of Trunks proceeding to completely undermine both the threat of Freeza and the significant uniqueness of the legendary Super Saiyan, which is cause for them to say this is when the series began to go downhill.

To me, of course, this is nonsense.

The argument that the Freeza Saga was laid out to be the perfect possible finale for Dragon Ball is one that requires tunnel vision in order to make. Specifically, tunnel vision on a single character - Son Goku himself. The Freeza Saga being a climactic one for the story of Dragon Ball and where Goku's character peaked is undeniable, as there's not that many more avenues you could explore with Goku's character following him becoming a Super Saiyan and fulfilling his destiny of avenging his race against the genocidal tyrant Freeza. But...what about everyone and everything else? Though Dragon Ball was always Goku's series, its setting and events always concerned much, much, much more than just Goku, and features a wide cast of characters that has many who are just as valuable. So where would the Freeza Saga leave them off were it to end the whole thing?

Gohan just returns to his studies while waiting for daddy to come back home, his own power and hidden potential never receiving any major payoff. Piccolo is back alive but stays on Earth rather than rejoin his people, leaving him seemingly aimless since he no longer desires to dominate Earth nor does he wish to re-merge with Kami. Vegeta is back alive and on Earth (which, if the Freeza Saga was to be the final saga, would not happen) and now wants to become a Super Saiyan to surpass Goku, Krillin's wished back to life but still hasn't found a girlfriend, and other characters like Bulma, Master Roshi, Kami, King Kai and the rest get absolutely nothing, after having had precious little to work with the whole time in this saga.

Now let's contrast with where things go in the Cell Saga:

GOKU, even after hitting his peak as a Super Saiyan, is presented with three new ideas and developments that actually challenge him. First is the idea that for all his strength and for all the fights he's won, he could end up passing away and unable to save the Earth from a new threat due to a simple heart virus, a disease that does end up attacking him and nearly costing him in the present. Next is the idea that there exists a level of power even beyond a Super Saiyan, which he has to put in a maximum amount of effort to ascent to. And finally, the idea of knowing when to walk out from a fight and pass the baton to someone else he knows can be depended on, in this case, his son Gohan. And even with that last one, how dependable Gohan actually is is called into question more than once, and so it takes Goku sacrificing his own life, dying a second, supposedly permanent death and lending his faith and fighting spirit to Gohan from the afterlife, for the fruits of his labors to be realized. Then, to spare his son any further dangers and fights for the Earth's safety, Goku opts to stay dead, leaving everything in the hands of the next generation from his son on down. To me, that's the most ideal end to Goku as the hero, and it would've sent him off with more dignity and heart than later entries like GT and Super would allow him.

GOHAN not only becomes a Super Saiyan himself, but his hidden potential is fully realized when he is the first to make the full, proper ascendence from Super Saiyan into a Super Saiyan 2. When his dad gives up his life to save everyone from something that was partially Gohan's own fault, it humbles him and almost breaks his resolve to fight back and protect the Earth from destruction at Cell's hands, but with encouragement from his father's spirit, he is able to, with only one functional hand, launch a Kamehameha Wave to counter and overpower Cell's, ultimately destroying the malevolent lifeform. It truly felt like a passing of the torch moment, so that even if Dragon Ball proper ended here, Gohan would be set to be the first new main protagonist in any future sequel and spin-off installments.

PICCOLO is finally able to recognize that in order to combat a threat to the world he's come to love as his home and protect the people he now cares for, he needs to re-merge with the Namekian his original self had split off from, Kami Sama. We were first introduced to Kami and Piccolo as two halves of what used to be a whole Namekian, so how poetic is it that Piccolo's arc be completed with him returning to Kami and Kami agreeing to give up his own existence to make Piccolo a whole Namekian once again? And Piccolo tellingly never got much in the way of character development following this saga.

VEGETA is able to become a Super Saiyan, then he becomes an Ascended Super Saiyan, he has a son with Bulma who even has a version of him who time traveled from the future playing a big part in this story, he shows he's able to care about others and fight in the Earth's defense in spite of remaining unrepentantly evil and prideful for most of the saga, and he gets a big redemptive moment at the very end before resigning himself to retire from a life of combat. Yes, he still has a lot more character growth and strides towards full rehabilitation of his character still to go, but for the initial Dragon Ball story, this still would've been a fitting place to end his character arc.

KRILLIN, from the start, got into martial arts partially to impress the ladies and get himself a girlfriend, but for years he was never able to find love. In this saga, he finally does. He and Android 18 don't quite make Official Couple status by the end, but he clearly loves her enough to think of her needs ahead of his own wants, and she's become pretty tsundere for him to, so the implication is still there.

MASTER ROSHI gets a small moment of reflection at one point here, about how he used to be considered the world's strongest man but now he's old, not of much use, and watching the current generation of fighters AND the generation after it leaving him behind, tying into the theme of torch-passing from the past to the future.

BULMA & CAPSULE CORP have a hugely pivotal part to play here, as Bulma is the mother of Trunks, the child she had with Vegeta, and played the Sarah Connor role to Future Trunks in the timeline he hails from. Her company's services and technology are also constantly used, all hands on deck from start to finish, right down to fixing up Android 16 (and removing the bomb inside him, regrettably so). Even the very final scenes of the saga take place outside Capsule Corp, and I can't stress enough how much sense it makes that Trunks exists and takes things in this direction. The series literally all began with Goku and Bulma, so now it (almost) ends with their offsprings - Goku's son mentoring Bulma's son in the future but dying in that world where Trunks eventually ends up killing Cell, and then Bulma's son allying with Goku's son in the present but he dies in that world where Gohan ends up killing Cell (though unlike Future Gohan, he gets wished back to life). It's poetry, it rhymes, it's perfect!

TIEN, after getting a bad deal in the Vegeta Saga and then being all but ignored, gets to have one last big moment where he stands up to Semi-Perfect Cell and hammers him with Tri Beam attacks over and over again so that Androids 16 and 18 can flee, almost losing his life in the process. It's a fittingly badass and noble deed from the guy.

KING KAI, having lost his relevance after the Freeza Saga, returns for the third act of this one...and he ends up dying for it when Goku transports himself and the self-destructing Cell to his home world!

The SUPER SAIYAN transformation peaked here. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Future Trunks are the limit to how many Super Saiyans we needed to see, all of them end up ascending to a higher level of the form, and only one attains the Super Saiyan 2 form in the end. It made sense, did not feel too cheap or inorganic, and was used in moderation and applied to the right characters in the right situations. Post-Cell Saga is when these transformations got out of hand.

The VILLAINS in this saga tied all the way back to the first real "Big Bad" villain(s) in Dragon Ball, the Red Ribbon Army. That alone was enough to give off a "full circle" feeling, but the obvious problem was that 5 different evil androids still just were not convincingly as great and worthy villains as a single Freeza had been. So we got the curveball of the saga's actual Big Bad, Cell, an artificially engineered lifeform made from the cells of all the strongest, most major fighters seen in the series up to this point, Freeza included, knowing all of their techniques, exhibiting many of their traits, and having a unique character progression that made him feel like the worst of all the past villains put together. His very existence marks this saga as the grand crescendo of everything Dragon Ball had been building itself up as during this time, his concept practically screaming that this is a "final boss"-worthy villain if there ever was one. And the final face-off with him did not disappoint of underwhelm, being grand enough to put Goku VS Freeza to shame (and no "longest 5 minutes ever" here!)

The STAKES felt even more personal compared to the preceding sagas. In the previous saga's climax, after everyone was revived and wished off of Namek with the Dragon Balls, the stakes centered entirely around Goku on a distant planet that was already doomed to explode. Whereas here, the stakes are for everyone on Earth, as the villain does not wish to rule over it like Piccolo or to exterminate its life and sell it like the Saiyans, but to blow it up, and in addition we get the threat of him being able to terrorize the rest of the universe so that countless other worlds would meet the same fate! The was more of a need to see this menace stopped than there'd ever been before.

The CALLBACKS that got made to just about all previous ones, right down to resurrecting the World's Martial Arts Tournament concept. Can't even begin to list them all here, but it's just very The Rise of Skywalker-esque in this regard (and it's even the 9th saga, too!)

The ENDING, as I said before, is outside Capsule Corp, and just look how it visually caps off the stories of Trunks and Gohan, and by that extension, of Bulma and Goku:

Those matching faces on Goku and Gohan. Simply beautiful.

Thus the case is made for why the original Dragon Ball ought to have ended at the Cell Saga. And when it did continue into one last saga afterwards, I will never forgive Master Roshi for selling me false hope
