Your ™ (aside from faramir obv) is how unhinged you are about denethor AND having the most correct takes abt him🧡. Oh and also oranges maybe
AAAA...THANK YOU ??? THIS KNOCKED ME FLAT like for real i cannot express how much ive been thinking about this ask all day. like i was in the grocery store thinking about it. i cant decide if it's funnier if you've been here since i was 19 and a hater and watched me have my dramatic change of heart in real time or if youre new here and don't know my tragic backstory. TO ME it's hilarious to be assigned denethor girl bc like teenage me is having a heart attack but i bear the badge with pride nevertheless <3333 and thats what we call character growth!
pj had totally got me with the mad-and-vindictive-with-despair denethor gambit for years and years but literally i started working on the faramir goes to rivendell au and thought for about two seconds about how complex both faramir and boromir's relationships with their father are and how the film changes genuinely weaken all of their characters so much and did a total 180 degree turn on a dime. by doing denethor dirty i would automatically be doing faramir dirty and then i started thinking and went hang on a second he is so complex and interesting actually. like i can't emphasize how much that was the exact logic that allowed me to achieve this development.
i mean okay LISTEN TO ME oh my GOD denethor IS a good leader there's a reason why gondor stood so long alone against the enemy and he NEARLY fucking beat SAURON in 30 years worth of head-to-head knock-down-drag-out psychic stalemate warfare and he only falls into despair when he loses both of his sons. you don't need to like him to respect the achievement!
i almost put a read more here but fuck it denethorposting on main. hit j on your keyboard or do a big scroll if youre sick of me LOL
i am very well known for going totally feral over duty vs love dynamics and that is literally what is going on between denethor and his sons. he cannot be their father and their commander at the same time and they are at war!!! being their commander has to win out above all else!!! whether any of them like it or not!!! do you know what ruthlessness means do you understand that duty wins this one.
do u guys understand that denethor and faramir are a father and son who love each other above else and yet do not like each other at all. there was a schism somewhere there along the line and love without bitterness and political sniping and ideological misalignment is a DISTANT MEMORY. No Of Course He Shouldn't Have Said He Wished Faramir And Boromir's Places Exchanged Jesus Christ No Son Should Have To Hear That From Their Father But Girl Sometimes When You're Grieving You Say Stupid Shit That You Shouldn't Have. doesn't mean you should've said it but [pippin voice] we can understand poor denethor a bit better, huh?
its just so interesting to me to think about faramir and denethor's relationship from a standpoint of like. ok listen good stewards that are not good fathers and dutiful sons who will not compromise their moral compasses for love. i don't like you and i agree with approximately 1% of everything you've said ever and your expectations of me have always been unreasonably high even when i was a child but you also are the only person who could ever understand the terrifying psychic powers that just live inside my brain and you are probably the incarnation of lordly dignity and power that i have had and i have wanted to emulate all my life and i still have the instinct to ask for your approval even if i'm going to hate what you're going to say. and when i'm dying i will call out for you. and i don't like you and your moral compass is going to get you and me and everyone in our city killed and you haven't listened to a single thing i've said since you were fourteen and i fucking hate that you're listening to and trusting the fucking wizard over me but you are my best captain and you are everything that i wished i could've been without the war and you'll never understand that that's why i pushed you so hard i just wanted you to live. and if you couldn't live at least we could die together. LISTEN i am a faramir girl until the death you all KNOW THIS BUT THESE TWO THINGS ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE- [i am forcibly yanked offstage]

I watched the movies first as a kid and they made it seem like denethor DIDNT want the beacons to be lit and I was so surprised when I read the book and it was all his idea. And that’s not even getting into them glossing over him using the palantir also. There’s just no seemingly good reason for either of those decisions except to make him into a simple caricature. It wouldn’t have been that hard to include?? And would have changed the whole tenor of his character in the films if they had
They actually do make it seem like that! The most Film Denethor moment to me is probably the shot of him glowering like Wormtongue as he sees the beacons light up. It's such a villain shot and yet his motives and actions are so reduced yet muddled that he's not even an interesting one. Like, it's not just that film Denethor is a terrible person regardless of the barely-alluded-to palantír where book Denethor is a great man whose pride and desperation lead him to use the palantír one last time and his sanity finally snaps. Film Denethor's motives are essentially "he be crazy and mean."
I obviously don't think highly of how the films handle Gondor in general, but my suspicion is that this is not mainly a result of just not having enough screen time. Making such an antagonist (if a pathetic one) out of him involved adding scenes, after all. I feel like there was actually an active effort to make him unworthy of respect. They could have made two movies out of ROTK (and probably should have) and I doubt it would have significantly changed the treatment of him.
The subtler, more complex gradations of his personality are already antithetical to the films' approach (see: Gimli). And Denethor additionally poses a direct challenge to Aragorn's super-special yet troubled heroism—as written in the novel, Denethor is probably closer to that than Aragorn himself, though both men are quite alike (as Tolkien repeatedly reminds us). And I don't think the films really want that likeness, or indeed want any other human men to be comparable to Aragorn in the way that book Denethor is.
That's so fundamental to the ethos and structure of the films that I think doing justice to Denethor would require a different way of thinking about the story, characters, and themes than was ever really going to happen with this production.

so i think it’s been long enough since the post i’m going to vague about was last in circulation anywhere near me that i can finally talk about it without getting a flood of harassment in my inbox like i Always do every time i talk about people Lying on here about lotr. (a HUGE number of posts about lotr on here are either misleading or simply Made Up lmfao. it’s really infuriating)
anyway there’s a post going around about. the weakness of man and tolkien incorporating what he knew firsthand about the horrors of war into the story - and that part’s all totally fine. but Somebody chose to add on a widely-reblogged addition that stated something so incredibly and offensively wrong that i honestly think maybe i died at some point and read that awful reblog here in hell.
they talk at length about how the “moral of humanity’s failing is somehow represented by. rohan “failing in its border obligations to gondor” and theoden having to die to redeem himself. and i just have one single thing to say about that
what in the good love of fuck fascist divine right of kings bullshit are you on mate
you couldn’t possibly be missing the point More you fucking weirdo
one criticism of lotr that i am very vocal about (which i for some weird reason Never see popular criticisms touch on) is that Of Course tolkien’s biases as a heavily christian british man gave him certain worldviews that obviously affected the worldbuilding of middle-earth, and he Loved him some divine right of kings rubbish. but even HE would NEVER have said or thought something so oppressively fascist about rohan’s response to gondor’s failure, because let’s be clear - the ONLY human kingdom that failed in the course of the war of the ring was fucking gondor. theoden had his problems, but the vast majority of the kingdom of rohan remained either uninterested in his descent into madness or tried to save him from it.
gondor had already been off the rails for ages at this point.
gondor, and its predecessor Numenor, represent the Higher Race of Man, God’s Chosen People (in a christian sense) - the Norman Kings who came from across the sea to civilise the British Isles and drive out the Wild Men and their offensive scottishness/welshness/cornishness/etc. the men of rohan, and other indigenous inhabitants of middle-earth ranging from dunlendings and the druedain (most likely pictish and cornish analogues) to the haradrim, easterlings and lossoth (spain/the moors, the ottoman empire, and vikings, respectively), are literally termed Lesser Men, because they’re not iluvatar’s chosen, and they are literally Expected to submit themselves to gondor’s rule, or become bad guys if they won’t. rohan literally came into being as a vassal-state of gondor, and their Happy Ending is eomer swearing himself back into that form of service and following aragorn on all his wars in the south.
now, because of tolkien’s biases, this turns out Well for them of course, but from the perspective of readers it’s easy to notice that this is actually fucking dystopian and horrific. in fact, the Most horrific example is the dead men of the Stone of Erech who fight for aragorn at Minas Tirith in order to be released from their oaths.
from their perspective, all those years ago, they were living their own lives on their own land in southern middle-earth doing their own thing, and then some tall dickheads pitched up on a boat after their island home sunk and just Declared that they were the chosen kings and all men have to submit to them. literally anyone in these circumstances would probably be justified in saying “yeah sure okay bro” and hoping the guys would go away - because they don’t have the omnipresence to know that tolkien’s version of christian god said elendil really WAS the true king and they’d be punished for not randomly right off the bat obeying some arrogant jackass walking onto Their land and insisting it all belonged to Him instead and also that their “sure thing buddy” was legally and magically binding. they literally suffered constantly for centuries because of a mistake literally anybody without magical fourth-wall-breaking genre knowledge would make.
sauron might be The bad guy of lotr, but anybody with a capability for analysis can look at the actual worldbuilding and see that gondor is also. Absolutely Horrific
and then we come to Denethor. motherfucking Denethor
DENETHOR is the one who failed in his “border obligations”. to rohan. the idea that rohan failed to guard its borders is fucking gibberish. because even if it HAD been their obligation (which it fucking WASN’T), the reason they failed was an overwhelming flood of orcs massacring their soldiers - you know. a thing that it’s pointless to blame someone for on account of all the Deaths being punishment enough you weird Freak. rohan was constantly begging gondor for help as they were being overrun... as the isen was taken and the first AND second marshals of the mark were killed. and denethor didn’t give a shit. he didn’t even want to light the beacons to call rohan for help - he was only angry that theoden supposedly didn’t answer in time because he was so twisted by the palantir that he saw defeat and betrayal in everything.
to claim that the failure in the disaster that befell the kingdoms of man in the war of the ring was rohan’s is to so totally misunderstand everything tolkien was trying to convey that i have to wonder if you even Read the fucking books or if you just Really like to wax lyrical about how great kings are. the point of theoden’s hesitation to go to gondor’s aid is that he has been through absolute hell and gondor sent NO AID WHATSOEVER so he intended to do the same thing back. and instead chooses to be the bigger man and give help even though gondor has no right to ask for it after offering nothing of its own. to do good for no reason other than it IS good.
THAT is the motherfucking point of theoden’s change of heart - not some fucking bullshit about being a good little slave to gondor’s king and laws, but the idea that in his heart of hearts, theoden couldn’t even let the people who allowed his son to die due to their inaction to suffer if he could do something about it. rohan’s entrance to the battle of the fields of pelennor is literally about how showing up for no other reason than because it’s right will win the day, even if you’re “lesser” than the big hero guys.
“rohan failed to uphold their border obligations” literally go fuck yourself you fucking prick lmfao

Dreams in the House of Tom Bombadil (and the Four Elements of Trauma)
Tumblr media
Now that we've gotten to the point where the hobbits spend the night in Tom Bombadil's house, I'd like to expand on this bullet point from my chapter review:
Much apologies to my girlies on the server who headcanon the hobbits with phobias corresponding to the four elements; sadly, Tolkien is not on the same page as us this time.
For context, I present to you these screenshots of messages sent on the Fig Tree Discord Server back in January:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This started as a half-joke, but it's since evolved into something of a shared headcanon for some of us. Pippin has a Thing about fire, because of the Pyre of Denethor. Frodo has a Thing about water, because his parents drowned. Bri has since told me that she headcanons Merry has a Thing about air, specifically cold air, after his encounters with the Black Breath. And that leaves Earth to Sam.
The good news is that this is a really fun headcanon; and when you look at LotR through this lens, it's actually kind of staggering how well it fits with the events of the book.
The bad news is that Tolkien did not write LotR with this idea in mind; and the whole thing with Old Man Willow, and the subsequent nightmares that the hobbits have in Tom Bombadil's house, make that abundantly clear.
After all, what does Old Man Willow do to Frodo? Lulls him to sleep and then tips him face-first into the water. He almost drowns. He almost drowns. Sam finds him face-down in the water, unconscious, held down by a root and not struggling; there's water in his nose and his mouth and his eyes and ears and he can't breathe, he can't breathe, he nearly goes out the same way his parents did, in a river that connects to the one where they died. If Tolkien was writing Frodo with hydrophobia, this probably would've gotten a bit more attention than it did. But no; in Tom's house, Frodo dreams of Gandalf and Black Riders, because he's the protagonist and Tolkien needed an efficient way to foreshadow things a bit.
What does Old Man Willow do to Merry? Closes its roots over him, so that only his legs are sticking out; and when Frodo and Sam set fire to the tree, Merry screams, and begs them to put it out. "He'll squeeze me in two, if you don't. He says so!" He could feel the roots of the tree clamping like a vice under his ribs, squeezing, crushing, bruising; he could hear the voice of the tree in his head, demanding he communicate the ransom message. And as our beloved former anon, Meg, pointed out: Could he breathe in there? Was it dry and stuffy and stifling inside the tree? How much air could he even draw in, when his lungs were being crushed and had no space to expand? He screams with what little breath he has left, but can they hear him? He's going to die. He can't breathe. He's going to die.
But, ironically, he's the one who dreams about nearly drowning, and his dream-brain convinces him he's lying in a "soft slimy bog" before he wakes up and finds himself in Tom's house again. He's not the one who got tipped into the water, but go off Tolkien I guess.
What does Old Man Willow do to Pippin? Closes its roots over him completely, with a click like a lock snapping into place; and when Frodo and Sam set fire to the bark, and Old Man Willow gets angry, they can hear Pippin's "muffled yell" from deep inside the tree. Fire. Smoke and ash and anger. Could Pippin smell the burning wood around him? Could he feel any heat or sting? Did he hear Old Man Willow's voice, the same way Merry did, cursing the flames and threatening to smother him if it wasn't put out?
His nightmare, out of the three of them, is the only one that makes sense to me; he dreams that he is again inside the willow, hearing the wood creak as it sways in the breeze over him, and hearing the voice of the tree laughing at him again. But, sadly, no mention of fire.
All of that to say, if I wrote Lord of the Rings—which I realize is a terribly presumptuous thing to say given that I am, unlike Tolkien, Not A Genius, but hear me out—I definitely would have Frodo's nightmare be about drowning, Merry's be about suffocation, and Pippin's be about burning alive. This would then be foreshadowing for the later horrific stuff they're going to encounter concerning water, air, and fire respectively.
I dunno. It just seems like a missed opportunity is all. Which is probably why, despite how much I adore the “nightmares revealing inner turmoil and then characters waking up in safety and comfort” trope, I never really liked this sequence in the book all that much.
Sam, meanwhile, is welcome to continue sleeping “in deep content, if logs are contented". Good for him. 10/10, no notes.

hi, was just wondering whether Imrahil will appear in your Boromir/oc fic? He's one of my faves and I love when he turns up in fics
Hi Anon! Thank you for this question! <3
Short answer: YES! The wonderful Prince Imrahil will play a supporting role in my Boromir x OFC fic, which takes place in the decade before the War of the Ring (3008-3019). It will therefore explore aspects of Boromir's early career as Captain-General, which includes his activities in Dol Amroth and relationships with his mother's side of the family.
A more significant role will be played by Boromir's aunt, Lady Ivriniel, but the gentle, reasonable, Imrahil will serve as sort of a foil to both her and Denethor as they pressure Boromir to fulfill certain obligations according to their preferences.
More detailed answer: I love the noble character of Imrahil as well! I think excluding him from the movies was just as grave as excluding Glorfindel. However, writing him and the Dol Amroth clan into my AU stories makes me a bit anxious. My Boromir and Éomer fics are interconnected, and well... I'm deviating from canon to match Éomer with an OFC rather than Lothíriel. I'm yet not even sure how I'm handling that part.
I haven't made a final decision yet whether to actually have Éomer marry someone other than Lothíriel, but I don't usually defy canon pairings, so potentially cutting that in-law tie between Imrahil and Éomer is giving me (figurative) stress ulcers. I dunno, I guess the "where will this go??" is supposed to be part of the fun?? XD
Anyway, thank you so much for asking and I appreciate you waiting for me to get that Boromir fic moving!

Fake fic title; But dad! I love him!
Two options here:
Canon: Arwen to Elrond about Aragorn
Non-canon: Legolas to Thranduil about Gimli
What I would actually write now that I really think about it:
Boromir to Denethor about Faramir. Dad I love my brother (and you should too) you can’t treat him like this.
Thanks for the request, anon 🥰

hello did you say something about a lotr style retelling of campaign one???? if you're willing please do tell
Hi anon - this one likely won't be written for ages yet, I'd be happy to <3
So it's a very amorphous idea (like my Filles du roi AU) because I want to reread the books front to back before touching the project. But the ghist of it is that it'd be a mythological retelling of Campaign 1 with a similar framework to LOTR - a book built from the accounts of a few characters and them getting accounts from their friends / likely flat-out imagining some shit (hard to get a Sauron POV), written in prose of Tolkien's style. Characters will sing beautiful songs mid-battle, the hearts of men and their like are fundamentally good, and etc.
Here's the thing: Scanlan is the primary author, here, so he deliberately exaggerated and switched up a lot for the sake of the story. It might actually follow TLOVM's plot more closely than canon, because it already does a lot of the streamlining he would want to do.
I figure he only publishes this in his old age - when only he, Keyleth and Pike are left - and the girls both think the rest of the party would be delighted by this story so they don't go out of their way to correct it. Also Scanlan clearly worked hard on it with all the prose, illustrations, poetry and songs - it's a love letter to Vox Machina. (Some sections are from Vex when she was still around, with notes she got from Percy's journals. Tbh half the poetry is his, and all the Celestial.) There are also probably contributions (coughcorrectionscough) by Keyleth and Pike.
BUT ENOUGH WITH THE SAD SHIT
The main problem would be finding the right balance of LOTR elements and nailing the writing style. But I'm excited!
My thoughts so far include:
Given this is Scanlan writing this story, he and Pike are the main characters, taking up elements of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin. Making them get separated and be present for the reclaiming of Whitestone (battle of Pelennor Fields, Merry & Pip) and their bond being pivotal to defeating the dark lord (Frodo and Sam. Pike doing the 'but I can carry you' thing <33)
Percy just... is Aragorn. It's stupid perfect for him: heir to an empire fallen from grace heavily associated with white and trees, hello?? Except all his names are part of his full name, not a host of aliases and titles.
Vex would likely be a combination of Faramir (ranger of Gondor, daddy issues galore) and Éowyn (I AM NO MAN, close friendship to one of the hobbits/gnomes, Trinket could be her horse). Both of them have a close bond with a brother that makes things absolutely heartbreaking. Except given she’s both Faramir and Éowyn she gets to smooch Percy-Aragorn, and their roles in the House of Healing are swapped (true love's crit).
Vax would likewise steal elements from Frodo (tragic bearer of the burden, cannot really go home) and Boromir :)
Keyleth and Grog neatly slot in with Percy as the Three Hunters. Grog and Percy n Kiki and Grog friendship time <33
Scanlan compresses the timeline so multiple great forces of evil act at the same time. Vecna is obviously Sauronlike, with a great evil land of evil. Undecided if the Briarwoods are Saruman (manipulation, sorta serve the great evil for their purposes) or Denethor (stewards of the white city, motivated by despair and in a twisted way love). Conclave could be akin to the Nazgul, or Saruman (Raishan namely, plus Saruman of the Many Colors = Chroma Conclave).
Look getting the balance Right between LOTR and CR and TLOVM is gonna be a bitch is what I'm saying, but taking some elements from LOTR would make it more fun.
Anyways apparently the theatrical edition doesn't include Éomer's cry of agony when he finds Éowyn on the battlefield???? Or Pippin looking for Merry amidst the corpses long after dark? I only ever watch the Extended Edition so im Heartbroken :c
Anyways watch this and think of the Twins (Éomer and Éowyn), Percy (Aragorn), and Pike & Scanlan (Merry & Pip):

That defense anon post was blinding!
Dear Empress the defense anon post was STUPENDOUSLY GOOD is there any way you can disseminate this to all the other blogs? I would love a decent journo to read it and use it! We know they come to tumblr and Reddit for their information we've seen it!
Now while I know that Sussex PR always refers to reconciliations and olive branches, I have a nasty feeling that Charles wants that too. What do we know about him? He is super sensitive to his image, has huge sense of guilt and has an unhealthy relationship with confrontation or lack of it. He reminds me of that kid hiding under the bed sheets willing the monster to go away. He thinks he is hidden yet the monster sees his every move. I am afraid this strategy does not work. The reason why Harry has twisted him around so cunningly is because he cannot distance himself from his own lonely neglected childhood. He has transferred those emotions (which at times can be useful in forging empathy) to Harry's deluded view point.
Yes Harry was neglected just as Charles was but while one was over disciplined by his father, the other was not. Charles is again adopting that, "you can't see me" philosophy with all of us who are watching this tragedy. We saw that Charles failed during and after the Diana years (but so did she, luckily her death canonized her. In many ways by not addressing his son, so did he) and yet he seems to think that by letting time soften the pains, that we suddenly see him as the good father. (Just because time warmed us to Camilla, Charles thought this largesse was extended to his son. No. Camilla earned respect, Harry did not).
We see the reality that he was in a hard spot, dealt with it badly, tried to overcompensate, thought all was well just like the acceptance of Camilla and could not see it was backfiring. Back under the blanket he went. In short he was a parent struggling and because he projected his own childhood neglect onto his son, was doomed to be a slave to him. This is where we are now and Harry knows it. Sadly Charles seems to think that correcting his son after his Diana failings is hypocrisy. As long as he does this and fails to accept his son is lost to him, he will feel pain and not heal, so I think Harry and Charles are linked in a way that William and Charles are not. William made this wise acceptance a long time ago and healed himself.
Dealing with confrontation is not a bad thing. It is not weakness to stand up for yourself and adapt the morality rules of the game if you are fighting for the greater good. That is how Charles has been bested by his son and DIL, they play two different games. For them confrontation though it may be passive aggressive at times is their way of reinforcing their self worth. BUT despite all of this doom and gloom part of me wishes someone would step in and shake Charles, he is Denethor from LOTR right now! There is the long game but then there is also the 'floodlights have gone off and the pitch is empty' the key is to get the balance right.
Personally I think Harry is trying to kill off his father and become King. Illogical I know but remember this guy thought he was the spare all this time and is still living in a time where he was number 3 anointed by God. In his mind William is an avatar that does not exist, much like in his beloved computer games only there to be wiped away.
====
Another great submission. I agree that he is slowly trying to eliminate one competitor after another. These are not family members to him, they are obstacles to eliminate in order to get to the throne. He is doing to Charles what he did to The Queen, except he is doing it much more aggressively since the Queen was far more popular than that Charles is currently. When Charles is out the picture, he will do the same to William. Again, it will be far more malicious.
PS: I am posting it this way to protect the sender's anonymity.

YES!! Yes to the 'Thingol was filling his armories while the Noldor were still chilling in Valinor. Thingol was battling Morgoth while the Noldor were betraying each other and abandoning their home.' Heavy emphasis on that because I kept noticing how its always skipped over how Thingol dealt too many losses first while the Noldor's who came legit killed their own lmaoo. Also, the First Battle of Beleriand?? Ring any bells?? It was the first major battle fought mainly by the Sindar against the forces of Morgoth. Thingol defended Beleriand from the evil things of the north. He was prepared for the war, but like any war, he faced multiple setbacks. After King Denethor's death and the heavy losses they took during battle, Thingol summoned all the Sindar who wished to live in peace to his lands because like you said, only the Valar can overthrow Morgoth and his forces (literally the War of Wrath). Pisses me off so bad how they undermine Thingol's kingship in Beleriand, Maedhros' mockery about Thingol is funny because in the end, who was betrayed by his own armies and went down committing mass killings of the Sindar and being known only as a slayer of his kin. Right, not Thingol lmaooo.

hiiii denethor anon here!! wow you’re really IN IT now (denethorposting). not to add more fuel to your anger but last week i saw someone say they hated denethor. and i just realised god they don’t get him even on tumblr do they. since then i’ve been silently fuming in rage. anyway… i am very Very Intrigued by both your faramir-goes-to-rivendell-au and denethor-thorongil relationship (if you ever want to write another 800 words about this, i am here for it 👀) and this line “each of them sharpens himself upon the whetstone of the other…” fuck. fucking insane actually.
unfortunately i won’t be replying for several days (i’ve had to keep my phone in another room to keep myself from getting distracted) . my exams have started AND i’m going through some shit irl :( it’s alright tho i’ll have more Faramir and Denethor Hours soon <- chanting this constantly haha. but i am with you when denethorposting IN SPIRIT okay. oh and can we please please please have denethor december? 🙏 bye will be here soon after my exams (that will be after the 23rd march i’m afraid)
hiii denethor anon <333 i am SO sorry this is so late truly attempting to figure out how to write AND see my friends AND do things like clean my apartment and go to the grocery store while working The Job...it has eaten my life. and this week my regular coffee shop switched their hours bc i live in my old college town and they are on spring break and it has sent me directly to hell. the death of My Routine…i have coped by INCESSANTLY denethorposting on tumblr dot com. i am somehow EVEN MORE in it than i was when you sent this ask. i hope you enjoy me being truly crazyinsane whenever you get a chance to look at all those posts lol. would love 2 hear your thoughts on them. but ANYWAY as always it is so lovely to see you, i'm sorry things have been tough but truly with my whole heart i bestow upon you the strength of denethor's sixty-year psychic war (with none of the associated madness) to make it through. looking at the date i hope you are free now.
here is the mandated readmore because i have never met brevity in my whole life. u said write another 800 words and i took that as a challenge um this post is like 2000 words. well...back on my bullshit
i mean this with all the love and joy in my heart but i laughed so much. no my dear friend they do not get him on tumblr. they have not gotten him on tumblr from the beginning. if you have been spared the incessant tomato jokes i truly…[crying] I Wish I Were You So Bad. this guy doesnt even know about the tumblr denethor slander (POSITIVE) (YEARNING). its the trenches out here for real. i just live in my little bubble with me and you and like four other mutuals/Denethor Understanders and that is it.
speaking of denethor and the rivendell au. i miss the days when i was working on the faramir-in-gondor scenes. emotionally it felt like dying but i kind of knew what was going on. now i am in rivendell taking and failing this history of middle earth exam. and i am so very….the next time we see denethor for real is in return of the king. now girl…how will i survive another 80k words. i miss my boy my dear darling my tortured victim of the narrative. and according to the paragraph i just wrote faramir does too but is Refusing to admit it to himself<3
im also RIDICULOUSLY torn on how i want to resolve his arc. now just between you and me. and anyone who bothers to click that read more. I DONT WANT TO KILL HIM I WANT HIM TO LIVE. GOD I WANT HIM TO LIVE. I WILL WRITE YOU A THOUSAND HAPPY ENDINGS. except its not a happy ending its a you are not allowed to die you are forced to contend with your choices you must keep living ending. because he will always be tragic no matter what. but its ALSO a you can rest now you can be at peace son of gondor you have won your war. all you sacrificed has been worth it. you have given your all when that's what duty asked you for and it has been enough. and that makes my poor heart weep.
like on one hand the idea of resolving his storyline with faramir.......the opportunity for some kind of reconciliation, some kind of understanding between them...god. delicious. i know in my heart that faramir comes home and IS the lord that denethor once dreamed of being. not playing at it...he is high and lordly and gentle and the world bends around his will and he knows exactly what to bow to and when to stand his ground and his powers are honed to a keen edge that he uses with the utmost care and. AUGH. he walks into the citadel the IMAGE of his father. it makes me feel FERAL. and how would denethor react to that. man.
BUT ON THE OTHER HAND HOW DO I END THE STORY. like. LOL. do u know what i mean. likelihood of me being able to just have a triumphant coronation and tie it all up with a bow is soooo small. the narrative contortions i would have to go through. to have denethor accept that and still be in character. Girl....no thank u <3 so we havent worked THAT out yet. like how much of the madness and despair do i want to put into the narrative. We Shall See. IM not politically savvy enough to get real into the weeds with it all so im kind of rotating just. a beautiful set of reunions with the fellowship. eowyn and faramir get engaged. boromir and faramir see all their dreams of a gondor restored come true. we skate over the political minefield and deeply navigate the beginnings of denethor and faramir's relationship in this new world. and among it all, within it all, is hope, and a new dawn. and curtain.
i got distracted but re: we are in rivendell. it IS kind of fun to think about the themes and narratives. i am pushing my Let Faramir (And Denethor) Be Numenorean + Let Numenoreans Be Weird agendas so so sooo hard and i am having the time of my life with that specifically. birds follow him around and pick up the tunes he sings. he hears the voices of the people he loves in his head. he falls into a river and after having a breakdown about it promptly decides that The River Is Testing Him And He Has Passed. he gets to rivendell and INSTANTLY knows that there is someone Very Like Him Here (its elrond. the elrond-elros-faramir connection has me FROTHING at the mouth. faramir looks at elrond and sees his father and sees every statue of elros in minas tirith and Knows that this here is the son of earendil, gil-estel, his brightest north star. elrond looks at faramir and sees his brother, his dear dead doomed brother, and every numenorean descended from him and all their sins and all their glories and yet, kind as summer, sees beauty and knowledge and a strange quiet man who carries all the weight of his country on his shoulders and yet knows him, knows the legends; perhaps the blood of numenor is not yet spent in the south)
i just think that Every Elf that meets faramir along the way is like woah...hold up. there's something up with THIS guy! men ARENT supposed to do that! not anymore anyway! galadriel is Lowkey Threatened by him. and isnt that beautiful. woman who could be queen of the earth sees god's special chosen boy and goes hang on a minute. Fuck. i think they work out their shit by the time the company leaves lothlorien but like...just thinking about how faramir lowkey blamed her for boromir's death in rotk! idk how their dynamic is exaclty gonna manifest but there's definitely some sort of similar mindreader2mindreader tension!
AND. um the idea of faramir travelling with the fellowship discovering that maybe...well. he has never wanted to be a warrior but he has been honed into a blade anyway. by his father and by necessity. and perhaps for the first time in his life...outside of gondor he does not need to be all that. he can be mithrandir's pupil without censure he can be scholarly and witty and cunning - he is all these things, in gondor. but there he has to be them, and now he can discover that yes, this is what he wants to be. and he has never let his father and the expectations of his position STOP him but there is always a weight, there is always the knowledge that your actions are disapproved of, and being away from that for a while is i just think. really good for him. see above re: he comes home the image of his father in a gentler time. keep honking im sitting in my car crying about denethor ii twenty sixth steward of gondor.jpg (<- my greatest creation PLEASE click the link lol)
ALSO IM THRILLED YOU LIKED THAT WHETSTONE LINE LOL i kind of blacked out when i typed it on the page. i think truly the crazy thing about denethor and faramir is that they SHOULD understand each other. they know so much about each other and yet are so incompetent at actually putting it to any good use towards, you know, improving their relationship. faramir is incredibly emotionally intelligent AND can read minds AND has taken so many of what he probably views as denethor's worst traits and turned them to gentler uses. (im talking about his powers but im ALSO talking about that thing he does when he encounters frodo and sam where he plays woe is me my brother is dead and i miss him sooo much to get on their good sides. yes of course he misses boromir more than anything else in the world. no he is not above using it to his advantage. and we see the SAME THING when gandalf and pippin come to minas tirith. hey isn't it crazy that both of them use boromir as a. manipulation chip. even after he's dead. hey thats kind of fucked up actually!) and denethor is…well denethor is denethor. ok im mostly messing around and thought that sentence was funny. i think he Knows most everything that goes on in faramir's head and yet Wilfully Chooses to interpret it in the worst ways because its just soo....very I Thought I Raised You Better Than That/I Honed You To Be My Blade Stop Defying Me. and despite all that the Problem is that they understand each other right up until they don't. they know how THEY feel about each other (incredible love that they can only express in the worst ways/think they're expressing only to be spurned by the other) but cannot POSSIBLY imagine that the other feels the same way.
ive gone on for SO SO LONG ALREADY LOL but. what do i have to say about denethor and thorongil. not enough and too much all at once. they're so toxic and awful for each other they're MADE for each other they're beautiful narrative parallels they're homoerotic besties they're bitter rivals they're pawns in a proxy war they're locked at all times in a psychic psychosexual situationship. um the enemy of my enemy is kissing me with tongue. idk i have more symbolism and actual analysis especially of the denethor-ecthelion-thorongil Issue. but we are just getting into it. so i will start with the situations bc i have two angles for this. on one hand i do think it is very fun if they constantly homoerotically circle each other for years and years and never do a THING about it. like...this is a stitching up wounds wiping blood off each others faces battle couple/situationship situation that THEN turns into a ridiculously high functioning political rival partnership bent together over books long into the night catching each others eye in council meetings using their very real disdain for each other for Manipulation Purposes and getting uh. SO hot over it. like.....Do You Know What I Mean. just. truly unresolved sexual tension THROUGH THE ROOF. it DELIGHTS me. they are always putting themselves in situations. and then NOT making out about it. AND THEY CAN READ EACH OTHERS MINDS!! THE WHOLE TIME!! SO THEY KNOW EXACTLY HOW MUCH THEY WANT EACH OTHER AND STILL ARENT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!! like thats just really good. but on the other hand.......the idea of just an absolutely terrible beautiful toxic rivals with benefits codependent situationship. i hate you so much and you know what we DO need to make out about it. every time they fuck it is a power play and they are having SO much fun with it. they will both start arguments with each other (AND IN PUBLIC TOO) just so they can fight and make up. the mind reading...Oh You Know What I Mean. taylor swift voice we had this big white city all to ourselves we blocked the noise with the sound of i need you and for the first time i had something to lose! logically thorongil is not yet in his grubby ranger era but the idea of him being dirt smeared all the time and hanging out with prim proper polished denethor. in the fic (which does exist and DOES follow the second model) theres a scene where hes just chilling with his head in denethor's lap and denethor is actually rather delighted and devoting ALL of his copious braincells to pretending not to be. Man. well never say im not a slut for contrast. and now the rest of what i could say is simply straight up redacted for indecency so it is time for this post to be over. the last thing i have to say is that it absolutely ruins denethor's life forever when thorongil up and leaves. sometimes a situationship....anyway. MUCH LOVE TO YOU AS ALWAYS yes we will have denethor december i already have an url saved.

I think because Faramir is the better liked, people always see his film portrayal as the worse but as much as I don’t like it, Denethor’s is 100% the worse adapted character in the whole trilogy.
PJ takes a multi-faceted, complex character and turns him into a cartoonish one dimensional villain. Denethro’s story is actually quite tragic and I just wish he’d been given a better story in the movies. Like, he’s still not a great guy, but they really ruin him and it’s a shame because John Noble is a great actor and could easily have done the more complex version justice
Yeah, I understand why there's so much more outcry about the films' basically unrecognizable Faramir. I hate the treatment of Faramir more viscerally myself, including in ROTK! But I do think the handling of Denethor is even worse because, as you say, it strips away all nuance and complexity in his character, which IMO is one of the intriguing and compelling ones that Tolkien ever wrote.
I do think canon Denethor is great in his way, despite his flaws, but yeah, there are little glimmers where it feels like John Noble could have delivered a performance appropriate to Tolkien's Denethor if the writing and framing hadn't been what it is. I personally would have probably still preferred someone else, but I don't think the source of the problem is his performance.

Read on AO3
Read on Wattpad
Faramir looked away from you as the group reached the forest. The slow march up the steep hill was silent and slightly awkward. The air was heavy, grey with rain. You could see your guide waiting at the tree line.
“Well then.” You said and cleared your throat. As you fiddled with the weapon around your waist.
“I suppose this shall be the last time we meet… for a time.” Faramir said as he looked back at the travelling party who were removing your things from one of the horses.
“I suppose it is.” You said quietly and tried to give him a smile but it came off more as a grimace.
"I would have done anything for you. But what is lost is lost." Faramir said suddenly colder as he stepped back. Unsure what to say, you simply let out a soft sigh. His confession wouldn’t change anything. You took your belongings and set them over your shoulder before heading to the woods. The elves waiting for you took some of the bags, others made sure they were able to fight. Glancing back you saw the others had left Faramir who seemed to be waiting for you to be safely past the trees. He would likely end up fighting off whoever had been sent after you.
“Your friend hesitates to leave.” The elf guide commented.
“We have never truly been apart. I do not think he understands why I must leave.” You answered quietly. The elf nodded as if he understood and went ahead. Your last glimpse back was at Faramir turning away looking as if he finally accepted that you really planned to leave.

hello gremlin. when I was looking into my palantír I saw the Black Fleet approaching Gondor! I'm worried it's all over. what do you think?
Four of the seven palintíri in Middle-Earth are known to be lost, the Ithil-stone has been under Sauron's control since 2002, and the Fellowship was able to take possession of the Orthanc-stone after confronting Saruman. In spite of Mordor's influence you gotta hang in there Denethor II, Last Steward of Gondor - a final stand to defend Minas Tirith is not fruitless against the seemingly overwhelming armies of the Dark Lord! Pls just...avoid any funeral pyres for the next 48 hours, okay?
~Send me anons and asks for TMI Tuesday fun and prophet!~

Lotr character hc's, GO!
You have given me too much power....
*pulls out my 50 page google doc*
warning: These are my less serious list, and are completely random but I think these are the most entertaining :D
-before the quest, sam would leave flowers at Frodo's door and he never knew who it was so he would press them in a book. He only found out after the quest and he used a few pages of the flower book into the red book of the westmarch
-Aragorn likes to collect rocks when he was a kid to show eleond and he was always like "Thats nice awww" and all that. He is 87 and he still does this.
-Arwen is a split image of her ancestor luthien, but Elrond says that she looks a lot like maglor with her hair.
- The children of the shire would play pretend with Bilbo's adventure, often led by Frodo and the tooks. Sam was old enough to start playing with them before they grew too old, and Frodo let him play Thorin one time, and him as course as Bilbo. This memory sticks with Sam too this day.
-Boromir is Aromantic
-Pippin convinced boromir to wear a skirt with him (It was Legolas's skirt) and he did not admit that he actually liked it.
-Pippin wears more fem clothing which really confused Denethor
-Legolas and Gimli eloped on the quest (Aragorn was their officiator)
-Eowyn starts a program in Rohan where she teaches young girl to sword fight & protect themselves.
-Frodo is a good artist and used to draw portraits of Sam, Pippin and Merry. After the quest, he stopped drawing people and focused on sketching out the landscapes that they passed by on the journey. Yet they were always creepy, and slightly distorted in an uncanny way. Elanor finds his old sketchbook one time and gets nightmares of weeks after.
-Arwen taught Eowyn how to embroider tapestries
-Frodo would love to climb the oak tree that bilbo grew in his garden. he never knew where it came from...
-Boromir and Aragorn would argue on who would give the hobbits piggy back rides
-Legolas is rebellious by mirkwood elven standards because he refuses to drink. It causes quite a scandal that thrandruil, the king and biggest drinker, has a child that does not even want to get even a little typsy.
-Bilbo would tell merry and pippin how to do pranks because it reminded him of fili and kili-
-Legolas is nonbinary and uses (they/he) pronouns
-Merry had a big crush on Eowyn, and never knew that the feeling were mutual
-Aragorn talks to trees because he is a gremelin, while legolas actually speaks the languages of the trees. This is how they become best friends
-gandalf big naturals
-Gandalf spent those 15 years between bilbos 111th birhtday and the quest going to village to village tran-sing peoples gender
-Faramir is trans and gandalf was able to give him the right treatment and binders when he was kid before denethor found out. Boromir was happy to have a brother.
-Merry learns how to knit so he can make baby Elanor hats.
-Gimli is the hottest dwarf of Erebor by dwarven standards
-Sam makes Frodo fried mushrooms because he knows its his favorite.
-Lobelia and bilbo have wlw and mlm rivalry
-Merry and Pippin love really weird food combos. Mushrooms and honey? delish. Cherries and salt? yummy. Vinegar cake? even better.
They force every one of the fellowship to try one of these combinations. Aragorn doesn't notice anything bad, Sam eats it because he is polite, Frodo doesn't mind the mushrooms and honey, Boromir throws up, Gimli tells him he should add more meat and Legolas never felt more betrayed in his life.
-Rosie cotton met Goldberry once and they had a sort of relationship where they kissed. She never saw her again, and she thinks it was a dream.
-Tom Bombadil and Goldberry are qpr
-Elladan and Elorhir wanted to adopt merry and pippin until they realized they were ADULTS.
Thats all I have for now! Theres so much more but these are the only ones I can think of without getting into a whole essay on what means what and all that. Thank you smm for the ask anon!!
