"Sam Finds the Note" and "Bucky Has Regrets"
This is for the @sambuckylibrary's TFATWS Anniversary Event 2024's prompt "Divorce Arc" Keep reading has the description of the gifs.
"Sam Finds the Note"
Sam stands on The Paul & Darlene as he holds Bucky's goodbye note, which reads:
"I'm sorry, Sam. I have to join them to protect you all. - Bucky"
The dialogue goes:
Sarah: Please come back with me to the house, Sam.
Sam: I'll meet you at the truck in a second, Sarah.
Sarah: ...Okay, I'll be in the car.
Sam: ...
Sam: Bastard...
Sam: We could have fought this together.
Sam: If you believed in me...
Sam: If you believed in us...
Sarah: ...Sam?
Sarah: ...Sam?
Sam: I'm coming.
Sarah: Okay, Sam.
"Bucky Has Regrets"
Bucky holds his head in his hands on a plane as the net behind him sways.
The dialogue goes:
Bucky: I'm such an idiot.
Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Val): Stop complaining, Sergeant.
Val: A few missions and I'll let you go back to playing house with the new Captain America...
Val: ...for a day before I bring you back in.
Bucky: I should have listened to Sam.
Val: And, what? Let me seize The Paul & Darlene? Bring Sam in for vigilantism? I would have.
Val's phone rings, rings, rings.
Bucky: Why did I only leave a note?
Val: Get a grip before we land, Sergeant.
Val: I don't have time for this - Val speaking. What's up?
Val walks away and her heels clack, clack, clack away.
Bucky: Sam was right.
Yelena: Probably. But you're here now, Barnes.
Bucky: I should have stayed. Fought this.
Yelena: She threatened your family.
Bucky: Yelena, Sam's never going to forgive me.
Yelena: Maybe he'll be so mad that he'll find us and save us to give you a piece of his mind.
Bucky: Why did I panic and agree to this?
Yelena: Because you're an idiot like you said.
Bucky: I'm so sorry, Sam...

Okay I think I’m ganna elaborate on my Thunderbolts and New World Order theory because I can and I’m having IMMENSE brain rot rn. (Also please lemme know your thoughts or feel free to add on to this)
- General Ross as we know plays a pretty big role in both films. Neither of our boys have any love for Ross ESPECIALLY Sam, after the way he was treated on the raft. So when Ross starts gaining more political power, Sam is most likely immediately distrusting and suspicious of it and knows Ross well enough to know that he would be up to something more now with his presidential power.
- so essentially (either through the grape vine, walkers big ass mouth, or possibly even Everett Ross, I’ll get into my theory about him in a minute😏) Sam gets wind of what Thaddeus and Val are up to and don’t trust either of them to have control over a team of super powered individuals. So Sam wants to know more about this new team on the playing field but doesn’t have a contact on the inside that he trusts enough to get more information.
- that’s is, until Bucky potentially volunteers himself. Then there’s a lot of back and forth between them “Bucky no it’s dangerous” Sam my middle name is danger 😡” “Sam you trust me right?” “With my life Bucky” “then trust me to do this for you, we need a man on the inside” “if you do this, you keep in contact with me you understand? No more of this disappearing on me act” “I promise, you won’t lose me again” blah blah blah I’ll let the fic writers come up with more poetic shit
- But the question is, how do they get Bucky into the Thunderbolts without drawing suspicion? Well, anyone remember this?
Tumblr media
- there’s a video of Bucky acting as the winter soldier somewhere out there. It’s likely that Sam asked Sharon to get a hold of it and keep it off web. But for Operation infiltrate thunderbolts, its the perfect “evidence” to have released. So Sharon, with the permission of Sam and Bucky, leaks it online. It’s the perfect ploy to make Thaddeus think he has some sort of leverage or reason over Bucky now. Because let’s be honest, Thaddeus can’t refuse the offer of getting the winter soldier to work for him and do his bidding. Bucky of course acts oblivious to the video, and let’s himself get arrested once Thaddeus gets the authority to do so.
- Wam Bam Bippity Bow, Bucky is now on the thunderbolts team, acting like this wasn’t the plan, acting pissed that he’s there, acting forlorn and dejected that he’s tied back down to the government, leaving Val and Thaddeus none the wiser (Ha ha suck it assholes) all while secretly reporting back to Sam every-time he can when the cost is clear.
- and all of this can either take place in the final or first act of Cap 4 or the beginning act of Thunderbolts. It’s the perfect reason as to why They won’t be in the same projects, but would still give them each an opportunity to appear for some scenes in eachothers movies (BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT GETTING DIVORCED DAMMIT).
- Now if you want to add ANOTHER spicy level to this well look no further! Remember that I mentioned Everett Ross before? There have been a few rumors that Thunderbolts is going to mainly center around the search for Vibranium, and it would make sense from what we saw of Val in Wakanda Forever. There are also rumors that Sam might appear in secret invasion, where Everett Ross also is. Thus giving them a potential connection.
- Everett as we know is highly trusted by the Wakandans, so we know he likely tells them what Val is up to with the thunderbolts and the potential vibranium plot. Everett however can’t get involved because he was already arrested once by Val, and the Wakandans can’t be seen interfering with international affairs based off a hunch they got from an “anonymous” source. Gosh if only there was an avenger with ties to Wakanda who still may have to redeem themselves after releasing Zemo…..oh wait😏
- It’s a nice way for Bucky to earn the trust of the Wakandans back completely while simultaneously keeping an eye on the new team recruits to see who may actually be avengers material for Sam (Yelena and Ghost obviously) instead of just being a thunderbolt for the government to use as a living weapon.
Ok that’s it, that’s my master theory. I’ll probably add to this later cause I just have too many thoughts and the brain rot has overtaken me once again

I forgot who it was but I remember someone replying to me about how MCU Valentina Allegra de Fontaine isn’t a bad person and that I was being too quick to judge her based on her interactions with John Walker and Yelena Belova. You know, as if recruiting an unstable war vet who committed war crimes into her shady team and ordering an assassination on an original Avenger wasn’t that bad.
After what Val said about dreaming about the day that America acquires vibranium weapons, even at the cost of what happens to nations like Wakanda, I stand by my early assessment of the character lol. That line was just pure evil.
As a side note, one of my favorite reactions to the character that I’ve seen on this site is that Val is the MCU’s Lauren Boebert. Maybe part of the reason why I thought it was hilarious was because my first thought was that she’s the MCU Sarah Palin.

Okay so this prevailing sentiment that I keep seeing about how “this doesn’t make sense why would Bucky be with a team of bad guys” really kinda annoys because...most of the MCU Thunderbolts team members aren’t even bad guys???
Ghost, Taskmaster, and Yelena literally all share similar kinds of backstories to Bucky, they are all victims of a system that either mind controlled them or forced them into doing horrible things. They’ve all broken free and are trying to make their own choices and trying to recover and get better in their own ways.
Alexei is literally just a chaotic man being chaotic, and the last we saw of him, he was part of the protagonist team of the Black Widow film. Hardly any sense of being a “bad guy”, just a big dork guy who really wants to punch some folks and admittedly trying and sometimes failing at being a dad.
And as much as folks want Walker to be a bad guy, even the Falcon and the Winter Soldier show didn’t bother making him the villain of the story, instead head writer Malcolm Spellman even stated that Walker and Bucky are two sides of a veteran’s story, and the last time we saw of Walker, he was actually trying to save hostages and helping Sam and Bucky, with him and Bucky even working together.
The only person with remotely a whiff of possible “bad guy” is Val, and we don’t really even know enough about her to say if she’s actually doing bad things because she’s evil or if she’s just like a Nick Fury who sometimes do shady things for what she thinks are the greater good.
Sure, many of these characters have served antagonistic roles in the stories they appeared in, but being an antagonist does not equal to being a “bad guy” or being the villain. Protagonist doesn’t mean Hero, and Antagonist doesn’t mean Villain, and sometimes I fear that fandom spends so much time trying to shove characters into boxes and ends up losing sight of the characters’ complexities.
The Thunderbolts are not just a “team of bad guys”, even in their decades of comics history, this team line up has run across all ends of the spectrum with Bucky being a member of this team at various points. The most recent new comics run is even a team of heroes led by Clint Barton himself.
And if one really takes a good look at this currently known line up of the MCU Thunderbolts team, with the exception of Val whose backstory is shrounded in mystery right now, these are all characters who’ve had trauma, who’ve been through a lot, who are soldiers and warriors who’ve all fought for what they thought was right. Sure their moralities can be a bit skewed, but they aren’t just people who go around killing people for no reason and just enjoying being bad for the sake of being bad. This is a team of broken traumatized messed up chaotic warriors seeking for another chance to prove themselves, for redemption, and is that not the kind of people whom Bucky would share commonality with? Is that not the kind of people that he might be able to help, to provide guidance and advice to? He’s walked their path, he of all people knows what it takes to make a recovery stick.
What better way to continue his journey from the ending of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier than to make him the “mentor” of a group of people each trying to seek their own redemption in their own way? Wouldn’t it be character growth for Bucky to go from the learner to now the teacher?
Honestly I think Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier said it best:
I just think The Thunderbolts are an exciting opportunity to take these characters that have been seen in a certain light and kinda bring them together, and through coming together, possibly view them in another light.
So many of these characters on the team, we all have a way of seeing them through our various biases and perspectives, and this film might actually teach us all to let go of certain biases and see these characters in a new way through their perspectives.
