🎆 Sing for Absolution: behind the scenes 🎆

Hello everyone, and welcome to this summary on how the story was visually built! If you happen to come across this post and would like to read (or reread) the collab @drones-of-innocence and I have created together, just click on the title above and it will take you right to it! 🤗

With that said, let's begin! :D

As some of you already know, this was an idea that Drones had for a long time. It was brought up during one of our many conversations a few months ago, in which she briefly described the plot and sent me a condensed version. I- immediately and completely fell in love with the concept, so much so that I couldn't keep still. 😂💘 I practically begged Drones to let me draw a few frames for it, and she happily gave me permission. At first, what I intended to do was make about 3 or 4 thumbnails, like I had done with One Step Closer.

I returned with 22.

And from there, we both decided "Okay. Yeah. Let's make this official. 🙌💯" LOL

What's interesting here is that, as you can see, some frames didn't make it to the final cut! 🤓 And inversely, new frames were eventually added as the collab progressed. Out of all the sketches that were either abandoned or later deemed superfluous, my personal favorite would probably have to be this shot of Kamek. 😈

From the rough thumbnails I had presented, Drones helped me select the best and most eloquent ones, and I also changed a few other things along the way. For example, one panel that was entirely redone was frame 3 (where Mario enters Peach's room), because the initial composition didn't allow for the reader to see the setting very clearly, and I felt that the establishing shot needed to be wider.

Many of the drawings were also ultimately flipped to give the visuals a more coherent direction and better flow, including this one!

I decided pretty early on that the palette should be made of cold hues, seeing as these events happen to take place at night and that a warm overlay wouldn't adequately have conveyed the more ominous and solemn tone of the story in my opinion. 🤔💁‍♀️

Oh! And I almost forgot: using cold colors for the backgrounds and characters was also very convenient because it helped make the magical effects (the fire, the spells, etc- all the bright, warm and/or complementary nuances) really stand out, which resulted in a more interesting and visually striking contrast overall. 😌🎨

As I do with all my illustrations, I started by cleaning the sketches and adding a unifying background filler for all the frames. Then, I selected the colors I wanted to use (a gradient made of a mix of navy blue and purple) and worked on each drawing individually. Even with simple tones, we can observe the sheer difference that shading makes! 👀😉

There's a visual element that appears in the story and which I had borrowed from Drones before, and that would be Peach's healing magic.^^ ✨ I remember I was fascinated by the idea when I first discovered it in Un Fiore Per Te, which had prompted me to ask her if I could feature it in a piece where the Princess is seen using said power while at Mario's bedside in one of my other tangents. 💞

I kept the effect similar on purpose in Sing for Absolution, so that the slight reference would be easier to catch! 😊

And last but not least, there's that cheeky little Fire Flower! 🤭🔥

As mentioned in a previous ask, the flower actually signifies a lot in this case as it somewhat embodies the deeply affectionate bond between Mario and Peach, glowing brighter and closing its eyes in happiness when the two are close. 💖

While admittedly not the first drawing I made in which a Fire Flower appears, the one that actually inspired both Drones and I to include this symbolic power-up in the story was one that I made all the way back in February for Valentine's Day. 🥰 The subtle yet direct reference can be spotted twice in the text, linking this piece to the collab and establishing a bit of a chronology as well. I was very honored that Drones added this small detail, and I very much look forward to working on more ideas with her in the future! 😁🤝

you wanted me to talk about ooparts from twewy. ok. this song is an absolute hot mess and it’s one of my absolute FAVORITES. but specifically only the version that plays when you fight konishi in final remix (‘ooparts -give me a chance’) the original is. eh. but the difference between them is not the thing that matters to me anyway so i guess i like the original too

first and foremost. i have gone through the process of color-highlighting the lyrics (screenshotted from the wiki) to point out which song each line comes from to visually represent just how much this massive word mashup borrows stuff. i also just straight up put the names of the songs next to some of them but i couldn’t fit them all or else this would be a mess lol. please enjoy

•most of this information is on the wiki page but i’ll have you know i discovered most of these connections by myself anyway long before i ever even checked the trivia section. also there are a few that i caught that the wiki didn’t. not to flex or anything. but y’know what credit really isn’t important anyway it’s really all about sharing information within a community so. peace and love

•there is a bit of a liberty taken with ‘you’re getting out of control’ bc the line in game over is just ‘you’re out of control’ but i still think it counts as a connection

so basically i think this song is really cool and amazing not just bc the music goes really hard at about one minute in (but only specifically in the one where you fight konishi, at least in final remix) but mostly because it represents a few of my favorite things about twewy. the whole ‘melody/vibe over lyrics’ thing twewy has going on where it says hey who cares if these lyrics are in any way comprehensible; what matters is that it’s a lot of fun to sing

but beyond that? ooparts also does the thing that twister is known for but even better. aka word salad lyrics that may not have any innate meaning in the words themselves, but they matter BECAUSE they’re word salad. apparently the intention behind twister’s nonsense lyrics is to represent all the different clashing ideas in shibuya. it’s diverse and noisy and weird and it all comes together into something fun. ooparts does the same except its lyrics aren’t even random words; they’re from other songs in this game. including twister itself!

to me it really feels like a turning point in the game when you fight konishi, the final week’s game master, the last actual valid legal boss within the framework of the game, and you have this crazy wild song playing that, through its lyrics, serves to remind you of everything else you’ve encountered in your insane journey. it’s a culmination of all your struggles and you’re here to see it all through

and the call-and-response lyrics back and forth between the two vocalists are soooo fun! it feels like teamwork: the song. like truly this is the moment of revenge and triumph for neku and beat. they’ve made it this far and nothing can stop them now. they’re not afraid of konishi they’re hyped up to defeat her. and konishi is such a great villain with a really tricky and unique boss fight so it feels super satisfying to finally get the better of her! it’s not about fear it’s about fun! and when the beat switches on the chorus to something so much brighter and smoother… feels like that moment in the battle where you break through one of her gimmicks and you can see clearly now

in conclusion: i love the weird telephone beep song with the strangest lyrics known to man

LOL maybe bc im bored and taking a break from writing and i miss writing them cute bc i love them so much and its depressing writing them hate each other lol so here’s a little mini drabble!! also tried to combine some of the hc’s we’ve made that i happened to remember!!

(this is when they’re on good terms finally btw)

For all intents and purposes, Mikasa, albeit surprisingly, can handle her liquor.

How exactly? Eren’s not really sure, it’s something that still confuses him, especially when he’s certain she doesn’t weigh more than 140 lbs, he can’t quite comprehend where all the alcohol she drinks goes to. He’s sure it has something to do with her previous partying trysts, developing a tolerance over time. But from what Eren’s seen, some way, somehow, unless she’s purposeful in her drinking, she can normally make it out of a night unscathed, ending up mostly coherent at the end of the night.

So it’s because of this, Eren can’t seem to understand why tonight of all nights, she’s drunk beyond her means off two beers and a shot, as if it’s her first time drinking.

It’s Mikasa’s decision in the first place why the end up at the bar. After a day of running around, Mikasa wanting nothing more than to go to some new exhibit and an art gallery in Chelsea, in which she spends the entirety of their time their explaining every little detail of every art piece to Eren (which Eren finds himself enjoying more than he would like to admit), she insists on stopping at a few places he would like, feeling bad she drags him around to do her bidding; and then it’s only customary they get something to eat, knowing the two of them would be too lazy to cook once they got back.

But Mikasa, instead of ordering much to eat, orders a round of shots which they take together, and two beers (to Eren’s great surprise), and somehow ends up drunk. Her face flushed pink and her words beginning to slur, the customary signs of a Drunk Mikasa. She even starts scooting closer to him, whispering little jokes into his ear.

“Eren,” she whispers, trying to hold back giggles. “What do you call a sad strawberry?”

Eren raises a brow, wondering where this could possibly be going. “I don’t know, tell me.”

“A blue berry,” her words almost inaudible between laughs.

He can’t help but laugh a bit, because he can admit, it’s a little funny. He finds he likes this laid back version of her, when she’s seemingly more relaxed, not worrying about the things that he knows plague her mind—the side of her hates to see, plagued by her familial issues that cause more of a strain on her heart than she likes to admit. But on days like today, her steps are a little lighter, her smile a little brighter, and it’s hard to not be infected by her joyous mood.

“You’re ridiculous,” he says, shaking his head, but his mouth is upturned, clearly amused and endeared.

“I’m actually berry funny,” she counters in between laughs as she lightly sways side to side, almost causing her to fall out of the barstool before Eren steadies her.

After this, he can see how drunk she is, and flags the bartender over, ordering her something to eat, knowing they should probably get going soon before she gets any drunker.

He watches her as she sits at the bar beside him, picking at the fries he forced in front of her just a few minutes prior. She props her head up on her hand, face visibly flushed crimson, sporting this dopey smile on her face that Eren can’t help but find endearing—she’s so fucking cute.

“Eren,” she says turning to face him, “can we go now?” Her voice is sweet, the tone she uses every so often, the one that always gets him, it lacks the snappy tone she normally uses, even now that they’re on good terms.

“Mikasa, you need to eat something, you’re drunk,” he protests.

“I can be drunk at home; I’m tired,” she whines, her face almost forming into a pout—such a brat.

He almost succumbs to her wishes, much like he always does, knowing she does somewhat have a point. After a day full of running around—much like they always do—even he wants nothing more to go back to the apartment, shower, and go to sleep. But he would rather not deal with her being in a mood in the morning because she’s hungover.

“Just hurry and eat your fries and we can go.”

Though, Eren fails to realize that Mikasa, albeit drunk, is still Mikasa and does as she pleases. He watches as she waves the bartender over, her motions a little wobbly, and motions for the check. They’re one of three groups of people in the whole dive bar, so the bartender is back within a under a minute’s time, check in hand, Mikasa already having taken her card out ready to pay. He takes her card, handing her back her receipt for her to sign for it.

Eren sighs, knowing he isn’t going to win this battle, and watches as she signs, before she hands him the receipt.

“Here, hand this to him so we can go,” she says, her usual snappy tone back.

Eren reads over the receipt eyeing the original price and then the final price with tip, seeing Mikasa tipped him well over 100%.

“Mikasa, why did you tip him so much?”

“What do you mean, I tipped him 20%,” her voice confused. She stands up from her seat not wanting to continue the conversation, before grabbing Eren’s hand almost a bit forcefully, and pulling him from the stool. “C’mom, Hannes is here let’s go.”

Eren leaves the receipt on the counter, knowing there’s not much of anyone in the bar to grab it anyways, before allowing Mikasa to tug him along outside. He sees the usual SUV, and holds the door open so Mikasa can hop inside, and slides in behind her, opting to sit in the back with her.

“So do you usually drunkenly overtip people?” Eren finally asks once the car starts moving, Mikasa leaning her head against the seat with her eyes closed.

“What are you talking about, I tipped him correctly. I know how to do math Eren, I’m a Columbia graduate, thank you very much.”

“Mikasa, you tipped him $100 on a $55 tab.”

Mikasa opens her eyes to look at him, her face shocked. “You’re giving me a headache, stop talking,” she huffs before leaning against him, clearly wanting to end the conversation. Eren doesn’t mind her touch, almost leaning into it, clearly receptive of her (rare) physical affections.

“It’s this damn bow you wear all the time,” he jokes, tugging lightly at today’s pink ribbon.

“Well take it out then,” she says, not bothering to open her eyes.

He does as instructed, pulling on one of the strings, and taking off her hair tie, watching as her hair comes loose. “Thank you,” she mumbles. Her face visibly softens, almost as if his joke was half right, the tension instantly leaving her face once her hair is down.

“You know, there’s worse things you could be doing drunk, you’re just a generous tipper, who would’ve thought,” he jokes.

“Fuck off, I’m a nice person, okay.”

“Yes, Mikasa, you are,” he teases. “Now go to sleep, I’ll wake you up when we’re home.”

1-25 for Finn because you deserve to gush about your favourite. Take as long as you want, or if you don't wanna do all of them then just answer the ones you want to.

*Disclaimer*- I had an absolute blast doing this and yes I know I could have written about all of these without waiting for someone else to ask, but it's much more fun and motivating when someone else thinks of you. :) So thank you. This is a long one. But so worth it.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?- I like Finn because she reminds me of myself in some ways but in other ways she is the person I wish I could be/the friend I wish I had. She tries to be the best version of herself everyday, even when she might fail. She pushes through even when things do fail because what can you do? She is stronger than me, tougher than me, smarter than me, things I wish I was. She forces herself into the world and makes people pay attention to her but I feel like I am always picked last or not picked at all. She emulates so many qualities that get her into trouble but somehow it all works out for the best. I give up much too easily on things when they don’t go my way. She knows she deserves to be respected and treated where often times I just take BS from people and let it consume me instead of fighting for what I want. She forces others to deal with her instead of being silent. She makes sure she is heard. She also was a good friend to Sara and Morgan and helped Sara grow as a person and be separate from Grissom because Sara is a separate person who deserves happiness even if it wasn’t with him and Finn sort of showed her that its okay to want love but want what you deserve and not wait around for someone else to make the decision. I dislike her because sometimes there were moments where she probably shouldn’t have kept pushing and maybe held her tongue and just let things go but she didn’t and it's more of a second hand embarrassment feeling when she pushes to far but that’s really the only dislike I have for her.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?- Desk sitting. Getting into trouble. Getting Russell angry with her only to have him actually care deeply for her. The Jules nickname she hates allegedly but lets him call her that anyways. Sports. Violence. Blood spatter. Having multiple love interests in just a few short seasons.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?- um dying? Lol yeah we know what the OG script said but the final nail in the coffin literally and metaphorically is that she died.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?- I think it would be neat to see Finn in a Harry Potter type setting. Mostly because I grew up reading those books and low key she’d make an excellent Ravenclaw or Slytherin. I would also like to see her in the Kinsey Millhone series which was written by Sue Grafton and was a private detective novel series featuring titles like A is for Alibi, B is for Burglar, etc. Kinsey was a great character and since the author died, she made it a legality so none of her work can be made into movies or series but it would be cool to see Finn in that world and the world of Temperance Brennan (book version) by Kathy Reichs.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?- Brighter Than The Sun by Colbie Caillat because I heard this song on the radio shortly after Finn’s first episode aired and then the team baseball episode aired and I felt that she just radiated during those scenes and it just stuck. I have an entire Finn playlist but this one is the first one I had on there in 2012.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?- we are both underdogs. CC- Under A Cloud. Finn was not everyone's favorite in the fan group and I understand that and relate to that personally. I’m never a first choice, I’m always left out of so many things, and I have very few positive life experiences because of this. The show didn’t really project these feelings about her onto me, but it was negative fandom experience over the course of 2012-2015. The experiences I have now with fandom are much better but those early moments will always resonate with me. So much unnecessary hate and disregard for no reason.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?- Seeing as I am always shocked to find a fan who likes her, I guess the simplicity of someone saying “Hey Finn is/was cool” is something I like from the fandom.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?- *see number 6* Also, on a deeper level, hating Finn because she seemed too much like Catherine or came to replace her is odd when society is always screaming about how we should be lifting women up, putting them all on the same level, not pitting them against each other. You can’t share a quote to me about women supporting women then go and slander one female character just because she took a job opening that someone else just vacated. If we did that in real life, we wouldn’t have jobs. Things like that happen so much in workplace settings. Catherine wanted out. Finn wanted in. It’s a simple thing but got blown way out of proportion by some in the fandom.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?- unfortunately no. I am too rigid in my routine and organizing and Finn is pure chaos. She's loud. I’m quiet. I’m up early, she's a late sleeper. Just polar opposites.

10. Could you be best friends with this character?- probably. I would love to have someone like this in my life, someone fun and bright and bubbly who would not forget about me or leave me out of group activities or forget I exist.

11. Would you date this character?- Yes! She’s fun and silly and full of zest for life and has such a big heart and clearly wants to love and be loved. I would adore this in real life.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?- that she didn’t die. Along with so many others- she originally wanted to be a doctor like her father, she's an only child, her first husband was a cop who was killed on the job and that spiraled her into pursuing police work, he was killed the same night he proposed to her so therefore she wasn’t officially married but she refers to him as a first husband, his case was never solved. She was adopted and raised by her uncle (biological moms brother) and aunt but doesn’t discover it until the Gig Harbor Killer reveals it. She always felt a stronger bond with her father growing up vs her mother and now this all makes sense to her but she never felt unloved. Both her adoptive family have passed on and she has to dig for clues and piece together her life. Her biological mother finds her and has been keeping tabs on her for 50 years but was terrified to reveal the secret since she was only 16 when she gave birth to her and why she gave Finn to her brother and his wife when she was a baby, they could raise her in a more stable environment.

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?- heart eyes, hearts in general, the sun, sunflowers, stars, anything bright and flashy remind me of her. Things she would use alot- the silly face emojis, winking face ones, the sports ones.

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.- I would say she is casual when she’s not working, jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, athletic wear. At work, business casual I suppose, she always had leather jackets and sleeveless shirts/blouses. Wish they would have had more opportunities for her to dress up and do undercover assignments and explore being different that way as well.

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)- Finn and Nick send me into another dimension. They both understood the job well, both could relate to each others pains, could fully support each other in a difficult time. I feel like Finn and her lightness would lift Nick out of his darkness (not that people are supposed to save each other in a relationship) but more of helping him be the best version of himself that he could be, not weighed down by his past, he could see her as a light at the end of the tunnel. He could help her relax a bit more and not be so wound up about cases and injustices. Not that she needed to be reeled in but he would give her a reason to stop and think of the consequences of her reckless actions if she had a reason to care about not getting hurt, maybe she would stop.

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?- I honestly can’t think of any. Finn gets along with everyone. She bonded well with Greg and had a good time teasing and poking fun at Hodges.

17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?- I guess Finn with all the random suitors they gave her. Like her Seattle ex Mike, I don’t hate it, but we knew it wasn’t going to be more than one episode's worth of backstory for her and him. Her thing with Shaw wasn’t great either seeing as he led to her death as well as his own but lowkey at least she had some romance before her demise. Moreno wasn’t awful but his partner was a dirty cop who beat the crap out of her in Karma To Burn so that would make things awkward. Finn is shippable with pretty much everyone.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?- The dynamic she has with Russell is beautiful. Not even being over dramatic either, what they have is poetic, magic, understanding on a level so deep, respect, care, admiration, chaos. Something so profound and resonating that I can’t even describe it properly but also could write an entire essay on it just screaming about it. Is it love? Is it platonic friendship? Codependency? Mutual? None of these things and yet all of these things at the same time? Spiritual, soulful, stellar, when her lifeforce is drained so is his, when she hurts, he hurts, it's just so *chefs kiss* magnificent.

19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?- Nothing that I can think of honestly. Finn didn’t get much of a chance to develop as a character before the show ended. She pretty much vibes well with everyone.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?- Finn seemed to have alot in common with Henry during season 12, teaching him baseball for the game, talking about fantasy novels, but she also connected well with Morgan and Sara. I think out of all of them, she needed a good girl best friend like Morgan. Morgan seemed more down with the fun and chaos Finn caused and they could laugh and be silly and make jokes and just hang out like normal friends and drink and sing karaoke and just go crazy.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?- my favorite thing to do for fics for Finn is let her be loved. Soft affections and comforts and just giving her as much love as I can pour into a fic is my main goal. I do like getting her into trouble and the subsequent “talking to” she gets from Russell. I can’t think of anything I don’t like in writing for her besides not having ideas, going through a dry spell of having zero ideas for her, that’s torture.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?- I love when people post fics about Finn because they are hard to find in the fandom. I don’t think I have read a Finn fic by another author that I didn’t like. Anyone who makes an effort to expand on a character in a creative setting is top tier, there are no bad fics in my mind. 23. Favorite picture of this character?- Oh man, just one? This is tough. Quite literally any screen shot from her first episode will do.

24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?- Ellie Bishop from NCIS sat on desks for a while and had a very spunky personality. Chris Connor from Becker (also stars Ted Danson) had a similar positive optimistic attitude as Finn (plus curls for days) and her scenes with Becker remind me so much of Russell and Finn but in a late 90’s-early 2000’s comedy setting, it's hilarious if anyone stumbles upon it.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?- First impression was shock because I was going into the rest of season 12 knowing Catherines loss would be prevalent and I wasn’t sure what Finn would be like. First episode with Finn had me hooked. The energy she brought, the playful banter, the anger issues, the back story with Russell, just all of it grabbed me and sucked me in and I felt this strong emotional pull to her after Seeing Red. She even walked with a spring in her step and there was something about that little quirk in just one episode that drew me in to wanting to see more and know more. And as a byproduct of that, I absolutely adore Elisabeth Shue. She made Finn so real and brought so many layers to her. Everything I’ve said about Finn in these 25 questions come from Elisabeth bringing her to life. I would have none of that if anyone else had been cast to be part of the show at that exact moment. Like how lucky did I get? Thank goodness she said yes to it or the casting people picked her or however the process went down. I can’t imagine anyone else as Julie Finlay. I will always carry this character with me (as I have since 2012) as like a little sidekick, a little voice that tells me I can do something, I’ll make it, I’ll keep going for some crazy unknown reason. Finn was Russell’s voice inside his head that guided him that he became dependent on overtime and she’s mine too.

26. FREEBIE QUESTION!!- What hopes did you have for this character?- Back in 2015 when Finn’s fate was left in limbo, of course I was hopeful for her survival. As time went on and the show was officially canceled, I was still left in limbo wondering how they would handle the coma. Then they announced a 2 hour movie, okay no big deal. Then it was announced that Elisabeth wouldn’t be joining that finale movie and I was devastated. Looking back on that time, I think I gained a better understanding as to why. The obvious answer would be, she was busy and couldn’t fulfill the time needed to film any potential Finn scenes. Or the decision to kill Finn was made and she didn’t want to be part of that so she dipped out, fair enough. But I hoped with all my heart and soul that her character would survive and not be tossed aside and forgotten like garbage. Oh it’s just Finn, who cares as long as we get Grissom and Sara and Catherine etc. The disregard hurt as a long time fan of the show, I was torn between being excited for certain things but gutted because, no Finn. Overall I just hoped for respect for her, dignity, a decent conclusion to her story because it mattered too. And once again I found myself feeling as if I didn’t matter because if Finn didn’t matter, then how could I ever expect anyone to think I mattered? That sinking underdog kicked in the gut feeling was too visceral and I don’t think I will ever accept what we got in the end for Finn. She deserved the love she gave, it was greater than most realized.

Zenitsu

» Zenitsu was always expecting his soulmate to be some pretty girl, someone like Nezuko (who sadly wasn't his soulmate), and not some guy who happened to be a demon slayer as well. That said, he's actually disappointed at first until he gets to know you better.

» He was also interested in your background because usually demon slayers worked in some sort of groups, so hearing that you've worked as a rogue for who knows how many months/years made him feel scared because you could've killed yourself! That would've left him without a soulmate!!

» He warms up to you really quickly, though, and he goes on missions with you as long as you're okay with having a scaredy-cat with you!

Inosuke

» Inosuke didn't even know what a soulmate was before you (or Tanjirou or Zenitsu) explained it to him. He always thought that the tattoo he had was just some sort of cool thing that only he owned, and everybody else was just a loser.

» The first thing he wanted to do when he found out that you two were meant to be was to wrestle against you because he wanted to see how strong you were! (You ended up winning, and he started to sulk because of it, and he said something about how he wished that you were a woman so that he would've won.)

» It's really hard to be Inosuke's soulmate at first because he's just... He doesn't know anything about how you're supposed to treat people you love, so you get headbutted a lot by him before he realizes how kissing works.

Gyutaro

» Gyutaro was definitely weirded out by you in the beginning because you were clearly a demon slayer, yet here you were saving him and his little sister from dying. Things only got weirder when he noticed that you were his soulmate.

» He doesn't want to accept it at first because he had gotten used to the thought of living his whole demon life with his sister. Hell, he's already over 100 years old, so it's a miracle that you two even met.

» It takes a long time for him to warm up to you because of a few reasons: You're a demon slayer, and he's a demon, and you're a guy. He didn't see your gender as a big deal, but the fact that you are a slayer who's supposed to kill him made him wary of you at first. Thankfully, though, he warmed up to you after a few months!

Sorry, this is totally out of the blue, but did we ever get a good reason for god slayer magic, or is this just a case of shitty mashima worldbuilding once more and it only exists as a magic because he thought it would be Cool? This has been tormenting me all night. Like, okay, even though I have qualms about it, I understand at least where say like- Gray's Devil slaying magic came from, conceptually, as an idea. It fits with his trauma of having a demon kill his village, it like, comes back around and SOMEWHAT had something going for it, if that makes sense? But God slayer magic is like… where did it come from? Why does it exist? Why do only two people use it as far as I know? These also apply to demon slayer I guess you could argue but even more so here. Are there even gods in Fairy tail? Deities, demi gods, even? Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mashima just realised that he didn’t have any plans for god slayer magic, so he shelved it entirely, considering from memory the guy from Grimoire's heart died or disappeared. Also, apologies for any inaccuracies or ignorance, i've a poor memory and it’s been a while since I've read GMG or Tenrou, this is just plaguing me. Thank you for your blog, Its wonderful to see someone else who actually wants to analyse the text and the characters, as well as the fashion- its always been my opinion that Mashima, at least Old school mashima, despite all his artistic flaws, actually seemed to kinda know what cool clothes or outfits were, which I appreciated.

You are absolutely right. I’m in the full belief that God Slayer doesn’t need to exist because every time it shows up it’s just a contest of ‘hah! I have your magic but BETTER!’ and our characters always have to power of friendship our way through it because how else are we going to beat a girl that can eternally heal herself??? It’s ridiculous that Chelia’s magic is Wendy’s magic without the only weakness that balanced out the overpoweredness. It’s literally a jibe-- hah, you have weaknesses to your magic? Lol, imagine that.

Dragon Slayers have motion sickness to balance the overpowered nature out and make them less ‘deus ex machina’, but God Slayers? Nah, they’re too cool for that. Apparently it’s not Mary Sue if our characters make an asspull first. Whatever was the point of the whole ‘you can’t eat my element but I can eat yours’ shtick? At least Wendy’s way of solving her problem was interesting because she uses healing. Natsu just... emptied his magic... and absorbed Zancrow’s... because he can just do that, yeah.

And the idea of gods in Fairy Tail is so much more mythical than dragons, which really puts to question if it was ever necessary. The only times we see a ‘god’ mentioned is in some of Erza’s armour, I guess? And that one Take Over: God Soul bullcrap. That is literally the only time it’s come into use for what it was made to do, and even then, both of those were better off not existing because seriously, what on earth? Mashima just ran out of ideas for real. I’m not even going to mention the ‘dragon gods’ in 100yq. Mashima’s not going to bring any god slayers back into the show anyways, so there’s really no point.

On a brighter end, though, I do like the irony that 2/3 of our god slayers met unfortunate fates. Zancrow’s one of the few characters that had an onscreen death, and Chelia lost her magic. It’s like the irony of people suffering from divine karma from trying to hard to become god-- Icarus, and all that. Even their magic had a black tint to it compared to the Dragon Slayers, like they’re ‘evil versions’ or something. It’d be cool if something bad like that happened to Orga, too, cause it’d add some fascinating lore of why this magic is so rare. Dragon Slayer Magic is a curse that turns people into dragons, so maybe God Slayers have a worse one. Maybe they try to turn into gods, but fail, and all inevitably die young, and that’s why it’s Lost.

For your first question, I recently replied to another Anon asking the same thing, but my short answer is that yes it's possible they still worked on the album in a bunch of ways - arrangement, sound engineering, vocals processing, etc, but it's also just as likely that Jimin met them to collaborate on his music post-FACE. We won't see the full credits until the album is out.

Everything else you said made me smile and your energy is so positively infectious. But maybe that's just the Jimin Effect - he's got us all charmed, giddy, and hungry for more. Thanks for expressing your thoughts in my inbox.

About the Anon asks format... I honestly don't know. I haven't sent an ask in forever but I think some Tumblr features sometimes don't work if the app version you're using isn't the very latest one. I've also heard that Tumblr features on desktop (through the Tumblr website, not on my blog page) allows people to post long asks and in general is better than mobile, so maybe using that format could benefit you. It's odd having an account hinders your posting though, when it should be the opposite... My settings allow asks from everyone too, I even allow submissions, asks with media, etc, so I'm honestly not sure what the problem is. What does it mean if Katya is putting up her costumes on depop already, new costumes? Their tour ain't even finished yet.. admittedly it's only the leotard/skirt from NY and the final number.. but im too emotionally attached to this tour that I don't want any of it sold 🥺

Well, if you want to commiserate about the fact that Katya will literally touch a piece of fabric for one second and then immediately sell it on her Depop… You’ve come to the right place! It makes me so sad too. I know she loves to immediately clean out her closet to make space for the new and she’s always done this but still it stings a little. Normally I’d say get the bag sis go ahead and overcharge for the privilege to smell your smoke and sweat soaked garments but in this case (and actually all cases because I’m sad every time she’s does this) I’m like… is nothing scared?! Katya you don’t need the money please save something! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but in 10 years time Trixie will have a whole museum dedicated to everything she ever wore and Katya will be living in the woods without a trace to remember her by.

But if it means anything? Besides the fact that she’s definitely not as attached as us lol… No I don’t think so. She’s selling the previous versions of costumes she’s since updated and she’s done that before. Also I don’t think there will be a lot of new changes or updates for the last couple of shows since there’s only 11 left. You never know though! But it is sad that she’ll sell stuff she and Andrew/Astor Yang have made as well as pieces from drag and costume designers like Marco Marco/Dallas Coulter/Amie Sarazan… these are all very talked people and I want their work appreciated by all… but I don’t necessarily believe that means a resale is needed. The only perk is that we now know more about the clothes like the fact that she has at least two leotard versions (makes sense it’s good to have a backup). But all of this does give me an excuse to talk about the changes in the costumes she’s sold so far…

During the first leg of T&K live for the NY/NY number their dresses/leotards were a brighter pink/red sequined fabric but more high cut around the legs and they complained about it during the live pod in Austin (you can see their shapewear and after the skirt reveals they were always adjusting their outfits like it was uncomfortable) so it makes sense they updated those. The newer versions are more full coverage around the legs and are lined around the neckline. I will say I don’t like the almost silvery sheen to the sequin fabric they used this time because the dress colors look more muted? But maybe it was just what they had available. Just in my opinion the originals captured the light better in photos.

For the closing Chicago number they added the fringe to the bodysuit and gloves. 10/10 improvement. Turned cute leotards into flapper fringe mini dresses perfect for dancing. No notes.

Now for the robes they went from sequins to shiny and I think they look sleeker and more distinctive from all the other shades of red and pink they’ve previously used in the show. A+++.

The iconic Cекси outfit… loved the upgrade from the first leg to what she wore in AUS/NZ but this final version is the perfect combo of the original outfit and the more sexy update. Plus it fits better and she can move around in it more. All excellent choices here but they settled on the best for sure.

So while I’m sad about all of these original costumes being sold I don’t thing there’s anything deeper going on here besides it’s definitely ending and she’s definitely not saving anything despite all of us definitely wishing that was not the case!

If anyone has their eye on anything, especially the updated versions of the costumes, save up now and turn those notifications on because there’s a 99% chance she’ll sell them one day. Honestly there’s a lot I would be tempted to buy because I love literally everything she wears but I’d rather shes hang onto it in the off chance she wears it again. Maybe once this tour is all said and done I’ll do a full T&K Live costume retrospective and then a follow up with an in memoriam post once she inevitably sells everything…

A God who is not God who is Teśena who is blazingly bright outside but without casting light which only means there is more light cast in his memory, only proves that even all the materials of the world cannot compete with this thing stronger and brighter than all of it—

He gags into the sink but nothing is coming out of his mouth. The mirror is dirty but not enough to not show how fast his eyes have changed into those of an exhausted and feral thing. He checks the door for a lock but there is none. There’s no way out and he’s snarling into the mirror but he has no voice and there’s no way out.

ugh what do i even SAY about this!! The cadence is very purposeful, I'll tell you that!

But there is a voice laughing in his head and it’s Tamar’s voice and he wants to shove her into the wall and out of his sight—

his muscles are tensed to bursting and his eyes are so wide, a needle, a needle, that pillar is a needle and it’s forcing his eyes somewhere so like that flame—with a loud slap he presses his hand against his eyes, wanting so very much not to see. Not to see.

He needs a lock, any lock. To be behind a door that can lock. Any way at all to imagine the concept of keeping something out—to center on it—to block, to obstruct. The stalls—the individual stalls—

He rushes into one, though its lock is weak, so weak, he’s sure just a kick on the door would be enough to open it, never mind the gap of space between the bottom of the stall door and the floor—something and anything could get in and certainly there is light behind his eyes and he’s breathing ragged and there’s no voice in him to scream—

There's something very time-honored about extremely intense breakdowns in public bathroom stalls. The instant I considered that as the setpiece for this scene, I knew there was no chance of me changing my mind.

He can’t remain standing, not like this, and he can’t sit on the floor, because then he’d be seen and to be seen is to be imprinted on an eye—so he sits on the toilet, shaking, and if it dirties him at least it is only on the outside. He pulls his knees to his chest, holding now both hands against his eyes, tight, tight. His throat is closing up, he’s sure, yes, he will die like this in suffocation, in allergy to his own thoughts, and that, surely, will be better than the alternative.

But seconds keep passing where he’s not dead.

The slight hint of antiseptic can’t quite cover up other smells and the ceiling lights are bright enough to reach through his hands and his elbows keep hitting the edges of the stalls—and he cannot leave, for he knows what awaits him there. If he had run the other direction—outside of the bar—no, he’d never have made it far enough. The needle would be drawn through his eyelid. He’s trapped, and a terrible thought comes to him, that he is not the only one—

once again all I can really think to say is that the cadence is purposeful. lol. oh actually also: the 'needle drawn through eyelid' thread was actually a fairly late addition! it's really correct for the sceen though.

Andrea I got into this kind of style right now so I decided to just make my main oc like this. Not gonna lie she looks cool.

Oh you sneaky snake lol. Looking for a sneak peek huh? Hah!

Well I did already share the first line of the next chapter of There's Not a Word Yet in a prior sneak peek post I did, but I CAN share the first few lines we get after the flashback is over (though bear in mind this bit may change a little before the final version is posted):

Tango was almost proud of the fact that his grin remained intact until he was fully through Tumble Town’s nether portal. His expression only dropped once he stepped off the obsidian frame and onto unforgiving bedrock, the atmosphere of the nether much muggier though not much hotter than the mesa Tango had just left. For a moment, he barely moved. His knees felt unsteady and he reached out a fumbling hand to grip the wooden structure decorating the Sheriff’s portal, but he didn’t move from his spot. He didn't have the willpower to try. (...)

54. Favorite first line/opening you’ve written?

I did get this one already. BUT like I said in that ask, I have SUCH a hard time picking favorites! So I'll go dig another favorite opening of mine out of storage...though this one has nothing to do with the MCYT world and everything to do with my favorite anime:

The Celestial Spirit world slowly faded into existence around Loke, accompanied by a wave of emotions he really should have been expecting. Three years...three long, painful years...he had almost forgotten just how beautiful it was. The interstellar dance of blues and greens and purples, the planetoids floating lazily across the star-strewn sky. The once lordly lion became choked up at the sight he believed he would never see again. He was home. Just as he was beginning to accept that this was real, that he was actually still alive, a warm pulse of raw power rushed through him and he staggered, gasping. The pain that had become a constant companion since his exile, began to fade for the first time in years. Loke felt, rather than saw, the star of Regulus grow in its brilliance, briefly burning brighter than it ever had in its history. The return of Leo was felt by the cosmos...and the sensation of regaining a part of his full power for the first time in what felt like an age was one he wouldn’t soon forget. Loke raised his hands before his eyes, turning them over slowly, summoning his light magic - his Regulus magic - watching as that familiar, warm, golden glow surrounded his closed fists. A soft laugh bubbled up from his chest; the gentlest of smiles appeared on his lips. He was finally, finally back. (...)

This is one that, technically, I could edit and improve if I ever came back to this fic. But as it stands, at the time it was my proudest bit of poetic visual writing I'd done to date. I've improved since then but I still love some of the word choices I made...and truth be told I'm still a sucker for Loke/Leo hah. I'd love to watch Fairy Tail all over again ^^

Manager of My Heart (Yaku Morisuke)

You frowned at the application form sitting on your desk, filled in and ready to be handed over. The problem was that you were unsure if you actually wanted to turn it in. What you were sure of was that such an action would completely throw you off of your current path, derailing you onto a more hectic one. You knew nothing about sports either, but you did know one thing – everyone that played volleyball is certainly clinically insane. Even so, you had promised your childhood friend that you’d at least try and be social at your new school, and maybe this was the way to do just that. Maybe you could even come to understand your best friend more.

You had grown up watching Tanaka Ryuunosuke playing volleyball. He was obsessed with the sport but you just never got it. What was so fun about hitting a ball over a net? He had tried relentlessly to get you into it, too, but sports just wasn’t your thing. Still, you tried every single time because you wanted to make him happy. He was the only one who tried to befriend you as kids and continued hanging out with you despite your introverted nature. In a way, it felt as if you owed him.

When class came to an end, you gathered your things and slowly made your way to the gym where Nekoma’s volleyball team was getting set up for practice. You still hadn’t decided to join the team, but you at least wanted to check them out and get a feel for their members. You settled down at the top of the bleachers, pulling out a notepad so you could jot down your thoughts.

Your eyes scanned each member of the team as they entered the gym, beginning their warmups. Ryuu had given you the basic rundown on the Nekoma players already, describing them so you’d already know their names if you decided to join the team – which he encouraged you to do on more than one occasion.

The captain, Kuroo, was rumored to be a big flirt and Ryuu had told you to avoid him. Kai, the vice-captain, was often complimented for his kindness. He’s the only one you had interacted with thus far and that’s because he was assigned to show you around when you first transferred. Kozume was a close friend of Hinata and an introvert like you. You were sure you had more in common with him than with anyone else, but two introverts trying to become friends spelled disaster in your mind. It honestly sounded painful to you. Yamamoto was, from Hinata’s explanation, the Nekoma version of Ryuu, meaning he’s a total idiot who goes crazy over girls way out of his league. Then there’s Lev, that ridiculously tall first year. And…

Your eyes fell on the short libero, Yaku. To you, he was easily the most gorgeous member of the team and your heart started to pick up speed as you watched him. Why hadn’t Ryuu mentioned how cute he is? You had never been interested in relationships or dating, you’ve never even had a crush on anyone before, but it felt as if all that changed when your eyes fell on him. If you had to describe how it felt, you’d compare it to one of those shoujou anime that Ryuu’s older sister made you watch as a kid. You could just hear that cliche music playing, upbeat and romantic, the teen being surrounded by sparkles and flowers, shining so much brighter than the rest of the team. It was like you were seeing him through rose-tinted glasses.

You suddenly slapped yourself across the face. “What the hell is wrong with me? Get a hold of yourself.” You silently cursed Ryuu’s sister, wanting anyone else to blame other than your racing heart or your overworked mind. ‘There is no way in hell I’m going to sign up to be a manager just because of a boy. No way, no how!’ And yet… you didn’t stand up and leave like you wanted to. You continued sitting there, your eyes following his every move. He was graceful yet powerful, returning balls you didn’t think could be returned. You had this overwhelming urge to protect him, to protect that beautiful smile of his.

You were sure you were going to regret it, but you had finally made your decision.

You were going to become Nekoma’s manager.

━━━━━━༻1 Year Later༺━━━━━━

Today was an exciting day.

The volleyball team was excited to be taking on Karasuno and you were excited to see your best friend again. You had kept in contact, of course, but talking on the phone just wasn’t the same as seeing him in person. When you stepped on the bus, your eyes immediately fell to Yaku who sat at the very back of the bus. When he noticed you approaching, he offered you a soft smile.

“Good morning, Y/N.”

You smiled brightly at the sound of his voice, settling down beside him so that he was between you and the window. “Good morning, Yaku-senpai~”

“You seem happy this morning.”

“Is it that obvious?” you rubbed the back of your neck, a sheepish grin on your lips. “It’s just that I haven’t been back home since I transferred. I’ve missed it.”

He bit his lip, turning his face away from you. You still consider Miyagi to be your home and not Tokyo? What if you decided you wanted to stay instead of returning with Nekoma? He shook his head to rid himself of those thoughts. No, there’s no way you would do that.

“Is something wrong?” you inquired softly, leaning forward to see his face but he just smiled.

“No, nothing.”

“Are you sure? If something’s bothering you, please let me know, senpai.”

“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” he reassured you with a gentle pat on your head.

You smiled, relishing the warmth of his hand.

“Y/N!” Yamamoto rushed to the back of the bus, a determined look on his face.

You quirked a brow at him, the smile wiped from your face. “Yes?”

“Don’t you dare go falling for any of those country boys!” he demanded, shaking his finger at you.

“That won’t be happening,” you scoffed, folding your arms over your chest. “Yaku-senpai is the only one for me.”

Yaku’s cheeks burned at the statement and he sent you a look. “You shouldn’t joke around like that, Y/N. People might get the wrong idea.”

“Hai, hai~” you chuckled in reply.

Crocodile tears fell from Yamamoto’s eyes as he fell to his hands and knees. “Yaku is so lucky!”

When the bus finally pulled up in front of Karasuno high, the other team was waiting outside to greet you, the morning sun bearing down on them like a blanket of warmth. You were the first one off the bus, shoving Yamamoto out of the way in your haste. Your eyes scanned the students but you didn’t see your best friend. A blur of black and gray streaked in front of you before you felt arms wrap tightly around your boy.

“Y/N!” Ryuu screamed in your ear, spinning you around while you laughed.

Yaku frowned when he stepped off the bus, his eyes falling to the arms around you. You had always been a bit more on the reserved side but he liked to believe that you had opened up in the year since you became Nekoma’s manager. Yet he had never seen you laugh like that. What made this guy so special?

Yamamoto fell to his knees, more crocodile tears streaming down his cheeks. “It’s too late! Y/N has fallen for their country charms already!”

Kuroo snickered. “Did you forget that Y/N transferred from Karasuno?”

“Ah…” his tears stopped suddenly and he blinked a couple of times before jumping up, a grin on his lips. “That means that these country bumpkins were so boring that Y/N came to us!”

Ryuu’s eye twitched as he set you down. “Oi, what’d you just say?”

“You heard me! Y/N loves us more!” A streak of lightning sparked between the two males as they stared each other down.

You chose to ignore them, approaching the older students. “It’s good to see you again, Suga-senpai. Sawamura-senpai.”

“You, too,” Daichi smiled, ruffling your hair.

“Have you settled in okay?” Suga fussed, hands on his hips as he scanned your body. “No one is bullying you, are they?”

“As if we’d let that happen!” Yamamoto snapped back.

“You better not!” Ryuu replied, just as loudly despite being right in front of him.

Daichi sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “One is bad enough, now there’s two.”

You and Suga just laughed, completely unsympathetic to the captain’s plight.

You sat beneath the large tree behind the gym, the breeze ruffling your hair. Birds were chirping somewhere above you, not at all bothered by the loud ruckus taking place inside the gymnasium. As Nekoma’s manager, you should be inside cheering them on and taking notes about their performance, but you started to feel more overwhelmed than you had been expecting so you needed a moment to calm down and gather your thoughts.

“What are you doing out here?”

The voice instantly brought a smile to your face which you directed toward the short male standing over you. “I just needed some fresh air.”

Yaku put his hand on his hip, brow furrowed. “You’ve been gone for nearly fifteen minutes.”

“Has it really been that long?” you questioned in surprise, pulling yourself to your feet and giving him a bow. “I apologize, senpai. I’ll return to the gym now.”

You tried to step past him but he took hold of your wrist, his grip gentle but firm. “Tell me what’s bothering you.”

The corner of your lips twitched up. “Hm, so you do care about me, Yaku-senpai?”

Pink dusted his cheeks and he quickly looked away. “O-Of course, I do. It’s my job as your senpai!”

You hummed softly, tilting your head back to look at the sky filtered through the leaves above. “The truth is… I really miss this place. I didn’t realize just how much until I came back.”

Yaku frowned, taking note of the sadness in your eyes – a stark contrast to the smile on your lips. He didn’t like seeing you upset but he was especially concerned over this piece of information. Were you not happy back in Tokyo? Did you want to transfer back to Karasuno? His heart ached at the thought and he realized he didn’t want to lose you. You had become not only a core member of the team, but an important person to him as well.

“Tell me what’s bothering you.”

His eyes met yours. “Don’t use that line on me. It only works if you’re the senpai.”

“I may not be your senpai, but -” you stepped toward him and he swallowed hard when you rested your hand against his warm cheek. “You’re going to be my husband one day, so it’s my job to look after you. I suppose the manager position entitles me to that, as well.”

He sputtered at your declaration, his eyes wide. “T-That’s not funny, Y/N.”

“Good thing it’s not because I’m not joking.” You removed your hand so you could press a soft kiss to his cheek. “I’m gonna head back inside. Don’t stay out here too long, okay? Nekoma needs their amazing libero.” You gave him a smile before turning around and heading toward the gym, but you paused before turning the corner, looking back at him. “If you’re worried about me moving back here, you have nothing to worry about. As much as I miss Miyagi and Karasuno, I found someone much more important back in Tokyo that I’m not willing to give up.”

Yaku knew you were talking about him. His face burned and, just like he had no control over his heart hammering against his ribs, he also had no control over the bright smile that came to his lips or the warmth that filled his body. To say he was relieved about this news was an understatement and though he may not yet be ready to admit his feelings for you, he was happy knowing just how much you cared for him and that you had no intention of leaving him behind.

@moonrosey asked how i made the flashing eye gif in this set here, so i figured i would make a post to show it!

note: normally i would use photoshop to make things like this, but i made that set while i was at work and my job won’t allow us to download foreign software, so i have to use one of those free knockoff versions instead -- photopea, in this case. it would’ve been a lot easier in photoshop, but here i am.

so i’m going to show you how to make this gif in photopea:

so i start out with my image

next i’m going to darken the image to make it more atmospheric, and so that the glow stands out more. i use two Curves adjustment layers, one to bring the whole thing down and then another to add contrast. the settings for those layers look like this, respectively:

now the image looks like this:

i’m going to put those three layers into a group so they stay out of the way, because (by the nature of photopea and how gifs function there) we’re going to end up with a lot of layers and it’s neater and less confusing like this.

next, we need to create the end goal -- what we want the eye to look like when it’s lit up at its brightest. again, i use two Curves adjustment layers for this. the first is to brighten the eye up (a lot, i cranked it way up). but, because we want the eye to look like it’s glowing, we don’t want to bring the rest of the image up with it. so we need to use a mask, to make the adjustment only affect a certain part of the image.

the mask is that little square highlighted in green. whenever it’s filled with black, the adjustment won’t show, and where it’s filled with white, it will. so i filled the whole thing with black and then went in with a soft brush tool to paint in the iris area with white. now the eye is lit up brighter and the rest of the image remains dark.

next, i want to make the eye look like it’s glowing from the inside, which i’m going to achieve with some more contrast applied a little differently. it’s another Curves layer (this effect is mostly Curves tbh, lol). i duplicated the first Curves layer, actually, and then set the blend mode to overlay. this blend mode makes the dark parts darker and the light parts lighter, thus increasing contrast. i apply the same mask, so it only affects the eye, and i end up with this:

while making this, i decided spontaneously that i wanted to add color, because why not?? so to do that, i use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. i set it to colorize and upped the saturation (because the eye itself is grey, the color didn’t show up much until i did that), moved the hue slider around, and tweaked the lightness until i found a color i liked.

the layer settings look like this:

all that leaves the eye looking like this, though

which is obviously not what we’re going for. set the blending mode of the H/S layer to color, and you’ll get this

which is good, but could still be a little bit better. a good way to applied color look a little bit more natural, especially on high contrast images, is to go to the blending options:

that will give you a screen that looks like this:

i use the Blend If function! by moving the “current layer” sliders, you can remove the color from the blackest and whitest parts of the underlying image. you can see in the screenshot that i’ve moved the slider way up from the black end of the spectrum (making the black parts of the iris less blue) and a bit in from the white end of the spectrum (making just the whitest whites less blue). the sliders are two-part, so if you alt-click on one half of the slider, you can break it apart and the effect will be gradual and feathered instead of a harsh edge.

this change is subtle, but i feel like it makes a big difference. our image now looks like this:

that’s all for creating the final glowy look!!

if you were in photoshop, you’d be able to put this into the timeline and make good use of the built-in fade function to make it smoothly transition in and out. BUT ALAS, this is photopea, and here’s where things get complicated and annoying.

okay, so, to make gifs in photopea, you have to name layers a certain way to indicate to the program that This Layer Is A Frame In My Gif. that naming convention is “_a_”. any layer that is named starting with “_a_” will be its own frame in the animation. now, i don’t want each of my adjustment layers to be a standalone frame, so i’m going to utilize groups.

so far, my layers panel looks like this: two groups, indicated as Frames For The Gif, labeled for what part of the eye-glow-cycle they’re going to be -- 0% glowy (the base image) and 100% glowy (the one we just finished making). next up is to create the gradual fade in and out.

this would be so much easier in photoshop, i’m so sorry requires duplicating the glow100% folder over and over again and changing the opacity on each copy. for the original orange-kitsune-glow gif i made in set linked at the start, i think i used a 0%-25%-50%-75%-100%-75%-50%-25%-0% pattern, but for this one i decided to subdivide it a little more to make the animation smoother. the more frames with smaller more incremental changes made, the smoother the animation will be.

the only layer that you will not make into a frame is the very first group -- the Background layer. as the rest of the folders are nothing more than adjustments being made to that background layer, it needs to be present underneath every frame of the gif.

as you can see in the layers panel, i’ve got the pattern set up. every one of those folders contains the same set of layers (the brighten, overlay contrast, and color layers from earlier). don’t worry about how crazy bad the image on the screen looks with all of them turned on at once -- when the gif plays, each folder will only be shown once! they will not overlap like this when played.

so you can see that the pattern starts at the bottom with glow0%, walks upward through the percentages to glow100%, and then walks back downward to glow0% again. that will allow the effect to fade in and out.

but if you tried to play this (by going to “export gif”, that’s where it will preview the animation for you), it wouldn’t work properly, because photopea also requires you to specify the rate at which the gif will play. they need this in the number of milliseconds you want each frame to last for, included in the layer name like this: “_a_glow0%,500″. that would play for half a second. i want my animation to play faster than that, so it’s smoother and less jerky, so i’m going to specify 50 milliseconds for all of the in-between percentages, and then let it linger for longer on the 100% frame.

i will end up with something like this:

i want the gif to linger a little longer on the un-glowy part of the cycle, so i’m going to duplicate the Background folder, change its name to “_a_glow0%,500″, and move it to the top of the list.

aaaaaand that’s it! the animation is complete. export the gif and save it, and this is what you’ve got:
