Born to the noble Toure family in Gao, Mali, Sidi Toure experienced a strong pull toward music at a young age. But the weight to conform to the expectations of family and society meant that he was to abide by a tradition of being sung to, not the other way around. Yet, his determination and love for song pulled him against the strong current of society. As a child, he would construct his own guitars, on which he would craft together the early workings of songs. He later joined his school's band as the lead singer and became the youngest member of Gao's regional orchestra (the Songhai Stars). But his decision to join these groups led to his family's great disapproval; his older brother often protested Toure's behavior by breaking his hand-crafted guitars....~
Recorded in Mali in 2009 and released in January on Chicago intelligentsia indie Thrill Jockey, Sahel Folk preserves stilling rural blues from the former Songhaï empire. Descended from the kings of the region, Sidi Touré, not unlike regional innovator Ali Farka Touré, boasts liquid picking and plucking in this series of duets cut at his sister's home. "Sïnji" ("A Beautiful Woman") and tender lament "Wayey Zarrabo" ("Women Tiredness") glint the crystalline fragility of this meditative prayer.....~ Recorded leisurely over tea at his sister’s place on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, Sidi Touré’s second album is an intimate gem of bone-dry acoustic Afro-minimalism. Each track features Sidi and one of five collaborators who lay down profoundly spare, repeating lines on a variety of Western and African guitars while harmonizing about greed, national independence, modernization, farming, female fatigue, and other Bambara-language topics of import. Sidi dedicated the album to the late Jiba Touré, whose high, urgent voice graces three of Sahel Folk‘s nine trance-triggering tracks....~ Like fellow Malian musician Salif Keita, Sidi Touré has experienced much conflict as a member of a noble family who has chosen to live his life as a musician. Descended from Askia kings, Touré has strived to become a leader in Western Africa's songhaï blues, working extensively with musical royalty, family and friends. Sahel Folk sees Touré collaborating in the truest sense, recording tracks outside of the studio setting and in mostly one or two takes. This spontaneity and relaxed nature lend themselves to pieces highlighting many of Mali's musical trends, as guitarists/vocalists Dourra Cisse and the late Jiba Toure (on his last recording) inject their personalities into songs like the Far-/Middle East-influenced "Bon koum" and the nimble, soulful, but complex, "Sinji." Predictably devoid of drumbeats (other than faint sounds of feet tapping) and with the under-developed nature of the recordings, Sahel Folk has managed to represent the more traditional side of Saharan music.....~

Ketama,Toumani Diabate,Danny Thompson "Songhai"1988
If you like World Music with an east African/Spanish mix this album is for you.....~ Meeting of minds between Spanish Flamenco group Ketama, Toumani Diabate the great Kora Player from Mali & the incredible Danny Thompson on Bass, creating a unique, harmonious fusion of styles......~ For those keeping track at home, Ketama is a flamenco pop band, Toumani Diabaté is a Malian kora player (whose Songhai style gives this album its name), and Danny Thompson is a British bassist probably best known for being a member of The Pentangle. The genre fusion here honestly isn't as strong as I was hoping, the flamenco definitely stands out the most. But musically, everything is still solid....~ Credits

Ketama Toumani Diabate José Soto With Danny Thompson "Songhai 2"1994
Two or three times each year a recording comes that just mesmerizes you, draws you in and won't let you go. Such is the second collaboration between Malian kora player Toumani Diabate and Spanish acoustic ensemble Ketama. The first Songhai was acoustically rich but occasionally lost its way. After 5 years and many more sessions together, these artists have found near perfection. The interplay between the Saharan sound of the Diabate ensemble with the Carmona's flamenco fusion is ripe, sweet and pungent. The acoustic guitars, acoustic bass, balafons and African strings are effervescent. The compositions reflect their increased understanding of the others musical heritage. Amazingly, some of the best flamenco sounds crop up on Diabate's pieces, while the deep roots of north-west Africa are beautifully reflected in the Carmona compositions. The brilliance of the playing is also evident everywhere, with special guests like singers Kassemady (Mali) and Aurora (Spain) and ngoni master Basekou Kouyate stealing the show in a number of scenes. This also marks the reunion of José Soto with his former band mates in Ketama, and it is to the benefit of both. Danny Thompson, one of the original members of the Songhai project, is on only a few tracks, but his substitute on the others is Javier Colina, who's own double bass playing adds a different, warmer texture. They have also added touches of percussion, violin and some great backing vocals, and in tracks like "Pozo Del Deseo" and "De La Noche A La Maana" it all comes together with grace and beauty.....~ Credits

Bassekou Kouyaté is considered the best player of N'Goni on a global scale. Born in 1966, he grew up in a traditional family of musicians, his mother Yagaré Damba was a praise singer, his father Moustapha Kouyaté and his brothers were n'goni players. At the age of 12, Bassekou had already mastered the n'goni perfectly, and In 1979, while his father was ill, Bassekou accompanied his mother on the during his tour of Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. Since 1983, he has been working with guitarist Cheick Oumar Diabaté, who is the husband of singer Nainy Diabaté. Together, they accompany not only Nainy but also other artists such as Tata Bambo Kouyaté. In 1987, Bassekou met Toumani Diabaté with whom he recorded on two albums and toured in the West African region. They also deliver a concert at the Dranouter Folk Festival (Belgium). At a Banjo Festival in Tennessee, Bassekou met Taj Mahal, with whom he works in the studio. His star rises and rises and he is invited to record with many artists, in Mali, for example with Keletigui Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, Cheick Tidiane Seck, as well as in Mali. Abroad: Bassekou has worked with Carlos Santana, Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt... In 2003, he set up his own band, Samagéra, in which his wife Amy Sacko participated as singer, the balafon player Lassana Diabaté, Adama Diarra (djembe) and Fousseyni Kouyaté (bass n'goni). He did a few solo concerts in Holland and Belgium in 2005. With his current band, renamed Ngoni ba, he finally recorded a first album under his own name, "Segu Blue", which was released in March 2007. In the album, there are contributions big names in Malian music such as Zoumana Tereta, Lobi Traoré and Kassemady Diabaté. His second album, released in 2009, entitled "I Speak Fula", was nominated for a Grammy Award in the United States. In 2013, Bassekou released a new album, recorded in March 2012, just as President Amadou Toumani Touré was overthrown by the military, an event that has greatly destabilized Mali. The political situation leaves an indelible mark on the album. He is accompanied by his two sons Madou and Moustafa Kouyaté, and there are contributions by Khaira Arby, Zoumana Tereta and Taj Mahal.....~

Tartit (meaning "union") are a band from the Tombouctou Region of Mali. The group consists of five women and four men, all of whom are Tamasheq-speaking Tuareg] They formed in 1992 in a refugee camp in Mauritania. Imharhan, an expanded group that includes current and former Tartit members, incorporates electric instruments and cross-cultural experiments into their music. History In 1995, Tartit performed their debut concert at the MASA Trade Fair for African Arts in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. In the same year they were invited to the Festival of Women's Voices in Liège, Belgium. Tartit toured Europe in 1998 and then in 2000 toured North America. At the WOMAD Festival in Seattle, after performing their own set, the group joined fellow Malians Ali Farka Touré and Afel Bocoum on stage. In 2003 they appeared at the Festival in the Desert, where they again played with Touré and Bocoum, and also joined Tinariwen, Robert Plant, Oumou Sangaré, Lo'Jo and Baba Salah. Tartit has collaborated with other musicians, such as Susan McKeown (on her album Sweet Liberty), and their songs have been included on compilations such as, Rèves d'Oasis: Desert Blues. Tartit released their first album, Amazagh, in 1997. They became better-known with the release of their second album, Ichchila, recorded in 2000. In 2006, the group released their third album, Abacabok. To contribute actively to the development of their region, the band also formed a United Nations-recognized association dedicated to preserving and raising awareness of Malian music and culture. The association, likewise, develops schools for children and economic opportunities for women. Tartit's compositions include ballads and call-and-response songs. Most of Tartit's songs are simply structured. The female members of the band play the traditional instruments, imzad[2] and tende, and are supplemented by the teherdent ngoni and/or electric guitar played by the men. To these instruments are added chants and percussive handclaps. The result is a sort of desert blues. In February 2013, Freemuse reported that Tartit had fled the Timbuktu area due to the Northern Mali conflict. Leader Fadimata Walett Oumar (known as "Disco") fled to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso while other members went to Bobo-Dioulasso or to Mauritania. This complicated efforts to perform at European concerts during summer 2012; guitarist Mohammed Issa was unable to secure a visa while living in Mauritania and could not appear with the group. Mohammed Issa formed an affiliated group, Imharhan.Banning Eyre, writing for Afropop Worldwide, has noted that "with a more electric, 'modern' sound, Imharhan kind of splits the difference between Tartit and Tinariwen, with the women of Tartit participating with vocals and dance." In July and August 2013, Tartit and Imharhan performed throughout North America with singer-guitarist Mamadou Kelly as the Festival au Desert - Caravan for Peace.....~

"Le Festival Au Désert" recordings from the legendary Malian festival bandcamp
https://petitesplanetes.bandcamp.com/album/festival-au-d-sert-o-recordings-from-the-legendary-malian-festival
Putting on a huge Woodstock-style music festival in the middle of the Sahara Desert is not an easy task, as the gorgeous photos in the liner note to this album Le Festival au Desert show. Le Festival au Desert has been held in the quicksand of northern Mali in recent years and has brought together a mix of desert nomads and pop stars. They play enchanting music under conditions that are as harsh as they are stimulating. Fortunately, the 2003 festival produced this impressive and varied CD. She brings together tracks by Mali's superstars such as Oumou Sangare and Ali Farka Toure with lesser-known artists such as Aicha Bint Chinghaly and the desert nomads Tinariwen. The latter exchanged their rifles for electric guitars a few years ago as the civil war in Mali subsided. The most famous name here is, of course, Robert Plant, who contributes a wistful-sounding medley of old blues melodies. Led Zeppelin fans may buy this CD just for his sake, especially because of the Middle Eastern influences on Plant's music of "Kashmir" through his collaboration with Jimmy Page. But they will be in for a nice surprise when they listen to the rest of the record. Despite the star-studded line-up, the concentrated energy of the live performances comes across in most of the pieces. This is particularly evident in this extraordinary setting with the Navajo rock band Blackfire, in the fantastic duet between the Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi and the kora player Ballake Sissoko from Mali. Also worth mentioning are the enchanting collaboration between the French rappers Kwal and the guitarist and singer Foy-Foy of the Touaregs (desert nomads) and the duet of the French sisters Lo'Jo with the guitarist Django from Mali. They all sound like natural partners who have come together under the Saharan sky. --Ezra Gale...~ Tracklist

Asake "Mr. Money With The Vibe"2023 + “Work of Art”2023 Nigeria Afro Pop,Afro Fusion,Afro Beat,Hip Hop

Asake has established himself as the best new artist on the Nigerian pop scene, thanks to an innovative street-pop sound that fuses choir-like, crowded backing vocals with traditional Nigerian melodies and amapiano rhythms. Last year, he made three appearances on Rolling Stone’s Best Afropop songs of 2022 list, with “Sungba (Remix),” “Joha,” and his show-stealing feature on Fireboy DML’s “Bandana.” Less than a year since his highly acclaimed debut, Mr. Money With the Vibe, the singer-songwriter has delivered his sophomore LP, Work of Art, which is easily the most important music he’s made to date. Work of Art opens with a prayer. A choir begins with the words “Emi ko, Olorun ma ni” (“It is not me but God”) before Asake joins in to fervently express the role the Creator has played in his journey and celebrate the power of faith, over a symphonic-gospel backdrop. Thumping log drums emerge, and Asake closes the track with the line “Alhamdulilah, I’m a new man.” As he outwardly demonstrated in 2022’s “Peace Be Unto You (PBUY),” this is a rising pop star who isn’t afraid to let the world in on his religious beliefs, and on Work of Art, he continues to spread this message. “I draw inspiration from my real-life experiences, to encourage everyone who thinks their present reality is constant; I want them to always remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel,” the Lagos native told Rolling Stone in 2022. He inspires hope on the warm, enthralling “Sunshine,” where he sings “Sun’s gon’ shine on everything you do,” borrowing a line from U.K. duo Lighthouse Family’s 1995 song “Ocean Drive” and delivering it with conviction and a slight flanger effect. On “Awodi,” he reminds us that his own rags-to-riches journey exemplifies that proverb. In some parts of Work of Art, Asake touches on the lifestyle that success has now afforded him. Hints of braggadocio creep up on multiple occasions, especially on “Basquiat,” where he refers to himself as walking poetry and a work of art. But his call-and-response, chant-like delivery and infectious charisma make anything he sings feel universal. Building on the sound of his debut, amapiano drums and basslines, shakers, and synths coupled with guitars, saxophones, and violins permeate the album. Asake’s blend of amapiano and Afropop (created with his go-to producer-engineer Magicsticks) has placed him at the forefront of Nigerian artists who have adopted a similar stylistic approach. He declares his love for the South Africa-birthed genre and the energy it induces on the explicitly titled banger “Amapiano.” He opens the song with the lyrics, “Amapiano, piano/Issa big vibe, all the girls them know/Steadily, steadily/Heavily, we are getting lit,” chanted as if they are an incantation. Asake has already proved that his breakthrough was more than earned. With Work of Art, he solidifies his status as a street-pop superstar. BY MADZADZA MIYA...Rolling Stone.~

The Daktaris "Soul Explosion" (recorded in 1997 & first released in 1998) Brooklyn - US, Afro Beat,Afro Funk,Afro Soul,Afro Jazz (members from USA / Cameroon / Guinea /UK / Benin)

The Daktaris is a well-disciplined army of two hundred African Bull Elephants marching relentlessly up your business to the beat from Funky Drummer. Or so began the liner notes on the original pressing of this album... Truth is often stranger than fiction. In 1998, Desco Records—a precursor to Daptone and Soul Fire Records—released The Daktaris’ Soul Explosion, ostensibly as a reissue of an unearthed Nigerian LP from the seventies. Though it’s now common knowledge that the story was a bit of a hoax, the record’s significance as a seminal part of the Afrobeat and afro-funk renaissance of the last two decades cannot be denied. The roots of the Budos Band, Antibalas, and uncountable others can be traced back to this enigmatic afro-funk release. Now, two decades later, Daptone has remastered the album from the original tapes, including a bonus track that had previously only been available on a 45, and featuring extensive all new liner notes by Bosco Mann telling the bizarre true story behind the Daktaris sessions.....~ Supposedly, »Soul Explosion« was a re-release of a Nigerian Afrobeat classic from the 1970s. At least that's what the blurb of the album, released in 1998, claimed. In reality, however, the tracks were brand new, by musicians who later not only played with the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, but also gave soul and funk a real makeover as The Dap-Kings with Sharon Jones, Lee Fields and the label Daptone Records. »Soul Explosion« is dedicated to Fela Kuti and you can hear it. Barking baritone saxophone, soulful clarinet, meandering flute and melodica melodies, trombones and trumpets carried by syncopated funk beats, polyrhythmic percussion, sharp guitar accents and a relaxed leading bass. The pieces of The Daktaris, however, are much shorter in time than Kuti's mesmerizing epics. A previously unreleased single has made it onto the current re-issue, but the other tracks are hardly longer either, but do not lose any of their power and energy. Two cover versions can be found on the album, which opens with a reworking of an Ethiopian hit by Mulatu Astatke's Wallias Band. The Daktaris add a funky guitar, tighten up the brass arrangement and give the piece an extra portion of punch. James Brown's »Give it up or turn it loose«, on the other hand, gains some airy playfulness through the Afrobeat rhythms.....~ Available again! Originally released on DESCO records in the '90s this album is the start of it all. Upon it's release the identities of the members and the origin of the group was like a game of telephone - the fact that the liner notes were a piece of pure fiction only intensified this. But the truth is the core members of this group went on to form The Dap Kings and Antibalas. It also features Jojo Kou who had formerly played drums and percussion for Fela Kuti, How's that for a super group! Regardless The Daktaris' Soul Explosion is one of the finest pieces of Afro-funk you'll ever hear. 15 years later this still remains one of Daptone's best sellers. Dig it!...~ Credits

Started in the 90s by Mzee Saruni and his family, Msaga Pore are a Giriama band from the surrounding villages of Kilifi, Kenya. Their Mijikenda sound is called Zaire Ngoma, and their main percussive instruments are a set of homemade Mbumbumbu drums - playfully called the Man, Woman and Children, due to their difference in size and sound. Their lyrics cover a wide range of topics, from social teachings to songs of praise to dirges - all inspired by their life as fisher-folk and written to be performed for their neighbours and fellow clansmen drinking palm wine after a long day of work. This is Zaire Ngoma 1, their debut release on Music From East Africa. All songs on this first release of a series have been recorded right in their home village Saruni (named after Mzee's father himself). Over traditional Giriama percussion, the Saruni family showcases their intricate calls and responses across three generations on this undiluted and original record......~

Saltpond City Band "Boko a Ko"2022 Ghana Afro Funk,Afro Jazz,Afro Beat
full spotify
https://open.spotify.com/album/6RaYUc8FneECxlz9y0V93g
Originally formed by the the legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Ebo Taylor about seven years ago, the Saltpond City Band is now led by his son Henry Taylor, a keyboardist and lead vocalist that commands the buoyant 8-piece outfit to glory in their latest album Boko A Ko. Released by Meet Me There Records, Boko A Ko delves into relationship problems told in a funky and energetic highlife way by the talent of an unique band. Over the years, the Saltpond City Band has played hundreds of shows with Ebo Taylor and became a household name in the international touring circuit. Their new record has more of a touch from Henry Taylor, although the legend of Ebo appears in “Mennbo Wobi”. Boko A Ko fuses a special brand of highlife, funk and afrobeat, slickly woven into a refreshing twist on classic Ghanaian highlife. With the core of the band set deep in the highlife experience, Taylor and company deliver a driving combination of robust horns, fluid percussion and earthy vocals. Available on vinyl, this album provides an unmissable experience of modern highlife and african jazz. Courtesy of Meet Me There Records, the profits from the album/label will be invested into the construction of a music studio in the community of Abledomi and continuing their work in the community such as DJ and instrument lessons. Invaluable initiatives.....~ Credits

Kongo Dia Ntotila is a fusion of Afrikan roots inspired beats and bass grooves with jazz detours on a journey through the musical motherland; with sunshine sounds of Kongolese seben guitars and horns reminiscent of the golden age of rumba odemba that keep you dancing along the way. The group formed in Leeds and recorded their first album as Congo Dia Ntotila. Released in July 2012, 'Seben Steps to Heaven' was based on Central Afrikan dance floor riffs combined with lively Kongolese style vocals and 'animation'. After a break and a relocation to the capital, original founders Mulele Matondo (bass), John Kelly (guitar), and David Lessie (drums/vocals) reformed the band, inviting a tiny but mighty horn section to join them. William Scott (saxophone) and Mike Soper (trumpet) bring the brass to the forefront of the musical conversation, and a new synergy to the Kongo Dia Ntotila core sound. With old album favourites remixed and a refreshingly unforced fusion through their new material drawing on jazz, reggae, afro-beat and more, the renamed Kongo Dia Ntotila is expanding their appeal and bringing more fire to the dance floors.....~

This is a great record and it’s cool. It’s just a beautifully played, beautifully arranged and composed record.” NPR - New Music Friday Top 6 Albums - John Morrison...~ ★★★★ “An absorbing ride. Collectivity, groove and a powerful live show are prized and shine through; perfect for the festival season we are sadly missing.” The Observer – Neil Spencer...~ ★★★★ “Beautifully layered and organic, trippy and hypnotic. This is the good stuff, don’t waste a drop of it! ‘To Know Without Knowing’ reminds us that Ethio-jazz isn’t music that’s rooted in the 60’s but an ever growing, expanding art form that has such relevance today.” Blues And Soul Magazine...~ “Lyrically inspired and musically assured, To Know Without Knowing, continues to expand the parameters of what Ethio-jazz can be in the 21st century.” Bandcamp - Album Of The Day – Andy Beta...~ ★★★★ “A startlingly successful marriage of old and new.” Q Magazine – Steve Yates...~ ★★★★ “An irresistible collective effort. Volcanic.. fusillades of brass and percussion.. spiraling rhythms.. starkly hypnotic.“ The Times - Clive Davis....~ “Ancient to modern sensibility. Rammed with more rhythm-stretching melody than its groove ought to have room for.” The Guardian - Jazz Album of the Month- John Fordham...~

Founded in 2011 in Bamako (Mali) under the impetus of Bamba Dembélé, percussionist and co-founder of the Super Djata Band, mythical group of virtuoso guitarist Zani Diabaté who died on January 4, 2011 in Paris (France), Bamba Wassoulou Groove is composed of 7 artists (3 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drums, percussion and a singer). Bringing together experienced musicians and young talents, the group updates and modernizes a music that has lost none of its strength and originality. Alternating between new pieces and great classics of the Bambara repertoire (Mandinka music, Wassoulou music), Bamba Wassoulou Groove exudes an energy and a telluric power during his concerts. Psychedelic and bluesy electric guitars, hallucinatory and hypnotic solos, inhabited voices, torrid rhythms, Bamba Wassoulou Groove gives punch to the current music of Mali....~
Bamba Wassoulou Groove "Farima"2015
Zani Diabaté, who died in 2011, was one of the great Malian guitar heroes who never quite made it in the west, despite his adventurous fusion of traditional styles and rock energy; he was compared to Hendrix when the exuberant album Zani Diabaté & The Super Djata Band was released here in 1988. But now his music and style are being resurrected, thanks to percussionist Bamba Dembélé, who played with him in Super Djata before joining the legendary Super Rail Band De Bamako, alongside drummer Maguett Diop and guitarist Moussa Diabaté – who now reappear alongside Dembélé in Bamba Wassoulou Groove. This is a band dominated by three guitarists, with Moussa taking the lead on new songs and old Super Djata favourites. On Farima he switches from a cool, drifting introduction to a driving solo, while Bina is a mellow workout featuring inter-twining guitars. Impressive ....Guardian review......~ Credits

Bamba Wassoulou Groove "Dankélé"2020
Philippe Conrath (creator of Festival Africolor) explains : "To create the Bamba Wassoulou Groove a connoisseur was needed, a man of confidence who would also ensure human and musical unity. Who better than Bamba Demb?l? (who passed in 2018) to build such a band? Bamba, the indispensable, the fixer, the invincible. Former member of Zani Diabatat?s legendary Super Djata Band, he had all the contacts in Bamako to set up the Wassoulou Groove. Helaunched a formidable machine with an unrelenting rhythm, that allowed the three fierce guitars of the group to soar, carrying Ousmane Diakit?'s voice into a trance. funk, rock, the Bamba Wassoulou Groove is a new virus that will contaminate the world's dance floors."....~ Tracklist

Extra Golden "Ok-Oyot System"2006
Like 'Planet Waves' Dylan or Fataar/Chaplin era Beach Boys, 'Ok-Oyot System' bathes, sometimes paddles in, a certain best case scenario melancholy. 'It's Not Easy' confirms these suspicions, if one is cold enough to view Extra Golden with cynicism. Lucid bubbling pedal steel, what Robbie Robertson might view as somewhere between a primal scream and a man just grasping he has a hangover three days after his bender began, rich guitar and 'Fool To Cry' out of breath pacing, at over seven minutes it turns off on its dry country dirt track just as we start to look towards the highway. Popular Stateside for all the right reasons, 'Osama Rach' can be thematically difficult to resist, sounding like early 80s Joe Jackson landing some thousand or so miles short of Kenya in West Africa instead. Their cult status hasn't shackled their id too much, it's music to sip a mid afternoon coffee to, it represents music always best served sometime in April.....~ Credits

Extra Golden "Hera Ma Nono"2007 double LP
The second album from the U.S./Kenya Afropop hybrid thankfully keeps the emphasis on Africa, with ideal results. Trekking to Africa for a bit of extra musical flavor has long been one of the more dubious traditions in Western pop, with the results too often no better than hauling back some exotic souvenir or ornament. Extra Golden, however, is no opportunistic in-and-out cultural exchange. The group is in a lot of ways an extension of Golden member Ian Eagleson's Ph.D. research in Kenya, where he studied that country's benga music. There he hooked up with Kenyans Otieno Jagwasi and Onyango Wuod Omari and invited fellow D.C. Golden member Alex Minoff along for the ride. The results, captured on Extra Golden's debut Ok-Oyot System, sounded like a bona fide collaboration. Alas, Otieno Jagwasi passed away before the album's release, but that only redoubled Extra Golden's efforts to keep the music alive. And it did take some effort, too. U.S. tour plans were almost scuttled before Barack Obama's office intervened and helped get the group members visas (Obama and his people have since helped other African acts get to the States as well.) That hurdle crossed, Eagleson, Minoff, Omari, and Jagwasi's replacement Opiyo Bilongo (plus a few more friends) convened in Pennsylvania to make a new album. Ok-Oyot System, released in 2005, was recorded quickly in a rundown Nairobi nightclub. For Extra Golden's second album Hera Ma Nono (the name translates to "Love in Vain"), the group had the same porta-studio but just short of a full week, plus all the usual studio tools. Predictably, things are a touch slicker, but only a touch. Thankfully, the disc retains the down-to-earth vibe of its predecessor despite the dual luxuries of time and better equipment. Even better, the communal environment clearly heightened the collaboration. Unlike Ok-Oyot System, Hera Ma Nono credits all songs to the band, as opposed to individual band members, and no doubt the results sound more cohesive as well. The album starts with "Jakolando", sung by Onyango Jagwasi in tribute to his late brother, the gently funky pulse switching gears around the four-minute mark to something a little more elegiac. But Jagwasi's "Jakolando" vocals, recorded back in Kenya, are pretty much just a cameo. The band handles the rest of the singing, taking turns on lead but all chipping in at one point or another. "Obama" is a jovial dance number (thanking the U.S. senator for his help) that gives way to a dramatic fuzz-guitar solo denouement. "I Miss You" is like a Nairobi country ballad, while "Night Runners" (sung partly in English) initially recalls the polyrhythmic swing of the Meters before shifting to a more buoyant groove driven by interlocking guitars. "Street Parade" is the first track on the album to feature lead vocals from Eagleson, and, along with "Brothers Gone Away" (and as with his most direct contributions on Ok-Oyot System, like "It's Not Easy"), it recalls 1970s singer-songwriter rock in the mold of rootsy globetrotter Ry Cooder. That's hardly a bad thing but perhaps not the best reference in this context. Fortunately the 11-minute "Love Hijackers", sung by Bilongo, and the title track, sung by Omari, end the album on a more African note. Not that the album, and Extra Golden as a whole, don't go a long way toward making distinctions between "African" and "American" irrelevant, but it's Nairobi that courses through Hera Ma Nono far more prominently than, say, Washington, D.C. In fact, the closer the disc threatens to come to home, the more you hope it gravitates back to Kenya, clearly its spiritual and musical home. In an ideal world, other similarly inclined acts with their eyes and ears toward Africa will follow Eagleson's and Extra Golden's lead back to the source....By Joshua Klein....~
