besides being a government name activist, i wish they left out some things in korean and just added an author's note or translator's note (smth like *keikaku means plan). imo it adds to getting immersed (?) in the manhwa and just gives depth to some scenes.

my main gripe is how the ' 형 hyung' is translated to 'bro'. just the honorifics in general, like it gives you a sense of who's close to whom or how they look at their peers. 'bro' just so unserious to me at this point cus it's tied to 'bruh' which connotes something else?

Many Koreans choose to blur the boundary when they interact with older friends they met socially by calling them “hyung”, “unnie”, “oppa” or “noona”. By using these terms, you show your willingness to be informal as if they were your own brothers or sisters. [as said here] [also source: trust me bro bc i used to be a bg stan]

these panels without the hyung context kinda loses its meaning too (ch297 sammy vs big danny). cus someone who doesn't have a strong understanding on how age/hierarchy/formalities work might not be able to grasp it?

kr fans also made a nickname for jake (김기띵 'gitting'), and yeah it's kr fandom but the thing is, jerry called him that nickname in ch411 and all the english readers got was 'boss'.

just adding also that jason, brad, & jerry call jake 'hyungnim' rather than 'hyung', a politer word. it's still different from samuel's 'chairman' towards yoojin tho. (not much sure at this part but hyungnim's also common for mob boss or some other informal organization [idk bruh this is literally a rant post]) (lua is exempt from calling big deal members honorifics tho, shes above them shes a girlboss) (jake also have moments of calling sinu 'hyungnim' back when sinu was still big deal boss)

also gun praising big deal's intelligence team (lua<3) is more apparent in the kr ver of ch89

also ranted about the same thing before about this gangseo-olly scene

i feel like there are more nuances that we're missing out on (of course i chose big deal scenes lmfaoooo these are the ones i view the most anyways). like ignorance is bliss but AHHHHHHHHHHHH plz just . let us in the lookism world completely

the old english baron — mini review

just for context, i was much much quieter in my live reaction from the other three books i’ve talked about reading on this blog, and that’s kind of because like. this book was very… eh.

the context that it was written “in direct response to the castle of otranto” actually does it more harm than good, because seriously this book hardly feels like a goth lit at all. all of the quintessential things that create a good gothic literature piece are just missing from the narrative, or glossed over. if anything this feels more like a medieval period piece with gothic elements. which, tbh, i don’t mind—i saw reviews with some people getting annoyed by the entire latter half and end of the book being devoted to court proceedings but because i enjoy history i was actually kind of fascinated by it. but the fact that all the “gothic elements” were resolved within the first 100-150-ish pages wasn’t really great bc all the intrigue that could’ve been fell by the wayside.

the main similarity this book shares with the castle of otranto is its lack of focus; but i think it’s done worse lmao. it’s very clear in this book that edmund is the main character but it’s not necessarily built up that way—the first part of the book starts with sir phillip who the reader immediately likes and feels sympathy for and we get a detailed backstory for; however the story then shifts to focusing on edmund who is like. for all intents and purposes jesus fucking christ reborn. i like him much less than theodore from the castle of otranto; theodore is a more complex character who does have some faults despite his (generally speaking) overwhelming good qualities (which is just a thing in gothic lit and old european books in general; the characters are very overwhelmingly Good and Virtuous Christians LMAO). but edmund is a fucking SAINT. i somehow like little billee from trilby SLIGHTLY (oh so very slightly) more than edmund bc edmund Literally Is The Perfect Man and at least billee was interesting by virtue of being ridiculous, having a foot fetish, and getting on my fucking NERVES lmao.

furthermore a lot of this plot hinges on random characters who are “villainous” doing “villainous things” out of just. jealousy???? barely explained jealousy at that. we spend very little time with the murderer of edmund’s parents nor the kinsman of the baron who edmund lives with who hates him for idk breathing air… and like it’s saying a lot that i can’t remember their names because they are THAT inconsequential and make THAT LITTLE of an impression. meanwhile manfred made himself no. 1 enemy of the state by PAGE SIX. i hated him and i wanted to see him get his shit rocked. that makes a good villain!!!

and despite being written by a woman, this book is so uninterested in talking about the few female characters that exist it’s painful. lady emma is introduced as a love interest after never being mentioned out of FUCKING NOWHERE in the middle of the story and just said “btw she’s perfect also and edmund’s been in love with her since he was a boy but dw about it” and i’m just ??? bruh lmao. otranto gave so much more respect and character to its female characters; all of them had distinct personalities and goals and furthermore THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE OF THEM!!! (and i’m not counting edmund’s adoptive mother in this bc sorry she is also like only in one scene and is basically irrelevant. yeah she tells edmund about his mom but we did like Nada to give her anything. she and emma count as one for me).

— going to show that just because a woman has contributed to something does not automatically mean it’s not misogynistic (looking at jkr as well 🙄)

anyway the other main thing that strengthens my stance that this isn’t Really a goth lit book is there is Barely any tragedy or lingering melancholy that haunts the narrative. yes, edmund’s parents died but there’s literally like two scene with the ghosts (or anything spooky) and yeah edmund is sad about it once he learns the truth but it’s just all… never expanded upon. it’s talked about but the emotions aren’t felt. the loss doesn’t take center stage; it’s simply a vehicle to propel the story to edmund triumphing over his circumstances and getting Literally Everything he wants out of life. which; mind you, i’m not against like at all. i don’t dislike the overall story (sans edmund being a mary sue? edmund sue? and it being kind of just. boring lmao) but i dislike the insinuation that it’s gothic lit like at all. it has gothic elements. but it’s just missing everything about the genre that makes it good.

so going back to my original point—the author positioning herself to try and make the castle of otranto “better” or “more realistic” is just. ridiculous lmao. it’s no different than people who make adaptations of media they’ve barely engaged with and that they don’t understand: it will never be as good.

overall 5/10. i wouldn’t read it again but just bc it’s kind of boring lmao. but i don’t hate that i read it lmao

My thoughts on all TWST characters before and after going through the chapters (currently started Chapter 5, I have not played the game. I just watch English translations on YouTube by Shella_BB.). Tbh, this is just me making fun of them all.

I will try to be vague to avoid spoilers, but just to be safe, here’s a disclaimer. !!Potential spoilers for Prologue-Chapter 4!!

[Prologue] - Before

Ace: I loved him before I really knew the story. He just screamed “I’m stupid and you’re stuck with me” and I think that’s sweet.

Deuce: Not much of an opinion on him. Prolly the voice of reason, heard parts of his backstory. Might’ve gotten stuck with us because he got stuck sitting with us at lunch.

Grim: Gremlin. Tiny gremlin that the fandom would probably hate, like most small, mascot things are. Not much of an opinion.

[Chapter 1]

Riddle: *Hall Of The Mountain King intensifying* “Um, actually. According to the encyclopedia of pslshdbsls-”

Trey: Seems calm but is actually feral or somethin. Idk, not much of a personality??

Cater: Tbh, I didn’t really know if he existed (along with Trey). Cutesy sparkly “I’m gonna call all of you ‘-chan’” guy that actually knows way more than he lets on. Previous dorm leader??

Chēn’ya: I wonder what he’s inspired by. You showed up once but I like your energy, funny magic man.

[Chapter 2]

Floyd: Feral twin. So completely unhinged. Looks like BSD Atsushi’s hair. Would Hotwire a go kart and attach some magic crystal to it so it goes 80 mph, all while singing Under The Sea and laughing.

Jade: I do not trust this man. Has to be equally unhinged. I do NOT trust that smile. One driving the cop car to catch Floyd. Not because it’s illegal, but he didn’t put on his seatbelt.

[Chapter 4]

Kalim: Sunshine child. Ily you so much. Babey. Wow he’s short. Is it the Sultan or Aladdin?

Jamil Viper: Lol Nice name. You seem oddly calm for someone inspired by Jafar. I like your hair-

Vil: Holy crap he’s pretty. His dorm outfit design??? I’m love. Designers went definitely tried to make one of the most attractive characters, not surprised.

Idia: I was introduced to him with his backstory with Ortho. BRUH THAT HURTS. You good? Definitely depressed.

[Chapter 7]

Malleus: Does he curse someone??? He never gets invited to anything, he’s gonna snap. I bet you. Tiny bit salty because it still reminds me a bit of Descendants, just Maleficent being the strongest.

Lilia: Tiny man. I like how you wear your outfits + your hair. Still someone not much opinion, but my friend who introduced me simps for you soooo....

Sebek: Loud. Loud. Loud. You just seem so angry all the time. Somehow reminds me of the Madame Trunchbull from Matilda. Just the expressions and kinda the energy.

Silver: Who are you????? Where are you??? What do you do? Uh, nice, hair????

Anger Issues- Chapter 1

Pairing: JJ x Reader

Summary: I actually have no idea how to summarize this so if someone could help me that’d be very much appreciated lol

Word Count: 1.6k+

Warnings: Mentions of alcohol, drugs, child abuse (highkey wish we had this warning in tv shows), and prolly gonna mention sex at some point, idk that should be it

A/N: Bruh, i had no idea so many people would be interested in this. This was going to go a very different way but I finished OBX again and decided to change it up. Also italics are flashback, enjoy!

You weren’t an angry person, that’s what you kept telling yourself. But ever since your parents died and you moved to the island with your aunt that’s all you could feel. You were so angry and you weren’t sure why, or at what. You were just angry, angry at the whole situation. Your aunt told you had every right to be, which only pissed you off more. You were looking for a reaction, something to make you feel in control. But when your aunt kept dismissing it, and telling your teachers, counselor, and principals to dismiss it, you couldn’t take it. So what did you do? Trashed your least favorite teacher's classroom. It felt slightly justified when you saw him being a creep during gym. When you were taken to the principal's office, she tried calming down which only enraged you more. You cussed her out and then next thing you knew you had after school detention for two weeks. You felt like you deserved more, but you’d take what you can get. So there you sat Friday afternoon in detention. It was quiet, the small hot room filled with two other people in it. You knew the other two boys, JJ Maybank and John B Routledge. John B was in your history class, and English, and JJ was in your Art, Gym, and Health. JJ also happened to live two houses down from yours. That was about as much as you cared to know. You had heard some of the rumors, specifically about JJ and his dad but you didn’t care. Rumors weren’t something you wanted to partake in, even if your aunt was someone who seemed to love drama. You let out a soft exhale shifting uncomfortably in your seat. One thing about the island that you learned was it was uncomfortably hot. As someone who grew up in the mountains of Colorado, you weren’t exactly used to the sudden new change in weather. Growing up living on the beach like your aunt seemed like a dream, unfortunately eight year old you didn’t factor in the heat. You pulled out your tank top, trying to get it to stop sticking to your skin. You looked over to the teacher who was supposedly meant to be watching the three of you. Of course his lazy ass fell asleep, feet up on the desk. The two boys had also taken note of it, quietly conversing. You tried to make yourself busy, as you listened in but it was no use. It was too hot for you to concentrate. You laid back in your seat, staring at the ceiling trying to get your mind off of the heat.

“Hey you New Girl.”

You lifted your head staring at the pair.

“Yes?”

“We’re about to dip figured it was only fair if we told you.”

“What about Mr. Nixon?”

“By the time he’s up it’ll be late.”

“You coming or not?”

You carefully eyed the blonde who had now just spoken up, he was already out of his seat, John B following.

“Look if you don’t come now, you’ll be stuck here until five pm.”

You looked back at the old man sleeping at the desk, and then at the two boys.

“Fuck it”

You simply said, before piling your things into your bag and standing up. You tugged at your ridden up shorts trying to stop any camel toe from peeking through. The two boys stood there staring at you, until you looked back up.

“What?”

“Nothing New Girl.”

And just like that the two were out of the classroom, you following in pursuit. It was so close to Summer that it didn’t even matter, if you skipped detention. The three of you ran out of the school, John B laughing at whatever joke JJ cracked. All of you continue to run, until you were a good distance from the town.

“Shit New Girl, we didn’t expect you to be so eager to leave the school.”

“You guys do realize I have a name right? And also I was in detention with all of you, not sure why you’d think I wouldn’t want to bounce.”

“I told you she was in there for a reason JJ. Anyway I’m John B, and that’s JJ”

The blonde gave you a goodly looking smile, and you couldn’t help but give one back.

“Y/N”

“Well Y/N, we’re having a kegger at the Boneyard care to help us set up?”

You looked at the two boys weighing the options in your head, you were hot as shit and probably needed to go home otherwise your aunt would probably flip or force you to do some meditation. On the flip side you’d be alone for a couple more hours.

“Sure.”

And just like that they smiled at you, JJ grabbing your hand pulling you along as all three of you began to head to the beach.

That was freshman year. Probably the best summer of your life, it was the summer you learned how to shotgun a can of beer courtesy of one JJ Maybank, you spent your days at the beach your new found group of friends teaching you how to surf which turns out wasn’t as easy as snowboarding, your nights were either filled with parties, or late night conversations on the beach. It was perfect, absolutely perfect. Then one night while the four of you were sitting around a campfire laughing, passing a joint around and that’s when you realized it. You liked JJ. Like you found him very cute, and maybe you wanted to kiss him. But the whole group dynamic worked so well, you didn’t want to ruin it. So from that night on you set your feelings aside not wanting them to ruin the perfect summer. Somewhere towards the end of the summer Kiara joined the group, or joined it again. You didn’t really know the story, all you knew was they were all friends in the eight grade, and then came freshman year she apparently went full Kook at Kook Academy. But you didn’t care, she was fun and it was nice to have a girl around. The two of you hit it off almost immediately, and those last couple of weeks of summer were even more fun than before. And then came the end of the year party. You remembered helping set up the kegs, and bringing the hundreds of packages of red solo cups. And then at some point you had gotten very drunk, because you didn’t remember much past that. You remembered having your first four cups of beer, and then someone brought out a flask everyone was drinking from and maybe you had a couple sips too many because the last thing you remembered was JJ carrying you out the both of you laughing your asses off. Then you woke up in your bed, with probably the worst hangover you’ve ever had. Later that day when all of you met up, everything was chill except for JJ who was very not chill. He kept staring at you, looking away when you looked back, avoiding talking to you directly. Luckily for you the other two boys hadn’t taken note of it, but Kiara did.

Once everyone left she stayed behind to talk to you, along with helping you do some beach cleaning.

“So what was that all about?”

“What do you mean?”

“You and JJ something seems off between you.”

“Really? Couldn’t tell.”

“Y/N.”

“Look I don’t know.”

“Was it last night.”

“I’m not sure, I blacked out. Last thing I remember was him literally carrying me out, we were so happy and laughing. After that I remember absolutely nothing.”

“Weird… I’m sure it’ll pass, he’s probably in one of his moods.”

“Yeah.”

It didn’t pass. Suddenly you went from being basically best friends with JJ to him barely talking to you. You continued to hang out with everyone, but it kept getting to uncomfortable until eventually you just stopped showing up. You kept talking with everyone, but it just wasn’t the same before. And you were angry, after a summer of managing to not be angry you were very fucking angry. You began acting out again, much to the dismay of your aunt but you didn’t care. You had all those feelings bunched together, and you needed to get them out. You began quite the regular in after school detention, at one point you were also suspended but you made sure that never happened again. You spent less and less time at home, during the day you were at school, or the beach, and then at night you’d chug some cheap energy drink and then go out skating around the beach. It wasn’t a healthy lifestyle, but life was too short to not live on the edge.

Tonight was one of the few nights you were home. Your aunt was on the mainland, for her job. She was a massage therapist or something like that. A couple times a week she had to stay on the mainland for whatever reason. It was a Friday evening, and you were hoping to catch up on some of the sleep you were severely missing. You had set up on the couch, the tv playing some movie you couldn’t care less about. You were more focusing on the small stack of papers in front of you. Despite skipping school and getting in trouble half the time you were smart. A lot of people caught on to that, and before you knew it you had a small business writing essays, doing homework, or whatever assignment people needed done. It helped fuel your caffeine addiction, and you were able to keep yourself alive while your aunt was gone. You had just begun typing up your third essay about the civil rights movement, when you heard a knock on the door...

Episode 1 (The free one 😉)

-Also also, I like that this series, Love and Legends, AND Reigning Passions all take place in the same universe and it makes sense. Unlike the more modern series where the crew just sticks characters in the stories to say “Hey, look, notice these characters”
