Quote
A man who lies to himself, and believes his own lies, becomes unable to recognize truth, either in himself or in anyone else, and he ends up losing respect for himself and for others. When he has no respect for anyone, he can no longer love, and in him, he yields to his impulses, indulges in the lowest form of pleasure, and behaves in the end like an animal in satisfying his vices. And it all comes from lying — to others and to yourself.
Fyodor Dostoevsky

“I am here to posit that it's exactly in these moments of struggle and stress that we need books the most. There's something in the pause to read that's soothing in and of itself. A moment with a book is basic self-care, the kind of skill you pass along to your children as you would a security blanket or a churchgoing habit.” ― Erin Blakemore, The Heroine's Bookshelf: Life Lessons, from Jane Austen to Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Beautiful people where are you
Here's my detailed review of this book!
And let’s start w the character that I hate the most- Felix
I think throughout the book we can see why a certain character acts as they do but when it comes to Felix, there's no explanation or any redemption arc and everyone just accept it. He reminds me of those typical fuckboys that think they're so “different”
Okay- Alice, baby girl I mean this in the most sympathetic way get out of that house get out of that town before Felix murders her💀 In the last chapter I liked it when Simon said “ I see myself in her” AND IT ALL MADE SENSE. She has self-destruction tendencies
Also, in that one chapter where Felix shows up at her house drunk and just says the meanest thing ever I wanted to cry AND SHE STILL STAYED
Now, Eileen- there are two times where I felt like omg I don't like seeing myself in her but I guess that's every Sally Rooney novel
This is when she talks in an email about Aidan and her to Alice- “Sometimes I think I was afraid that without him my life would be just the same, or even worse, and I would have to accept that it was my fault. And it was easier and safer to stay in a bad situation than to take responsibility for getting out.” it was so fucking good It felt so raw and so real. I had to regroup a bit after that chapter.
The second one is- when she talks to Simon when they visit Alice about how she doesn't want to date him because it would be painful but she will be so lonely I think that conversation was so beautifully written “And when I think about that, most of the time I don’t even need to call you, because I can feel it, the way I’m describing. I can feel that you’re with me. I know that probably sounds stupid. But if we got together and then broke up, would I not be able to feel that anymore? And what would I have inside here instead?”WOW JUST WOW
Okay, Simon- I liked him Is it because he's emotionally unavailable or is he just an older guy?😍 surprise surprise “If God wanted me to give you up, he wouldn’t have made me who I am.” AHHHHH. I hate that Eileen keeps pushing him away for so long but I see her side too
ALSO ONE LAST THING
When Eileen's sister gets married and Eileen and Simon are looking at each other and we just get the time sequence of them was so beautifully described and so well written. I thought it was happening in front of my eyes.
This was my detailed review of Beautiful People where are you. I think overall it was another amazing Sally Rooney book that describes the complex human relationship so well.
Until next time!

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.
