Today I was more productive than I expected to be. I have been struggling a lot with focusing, and today it wasn't an exception, but I still crossed out all the tasks of my daily to do list. Autumn is definitely here, the temperatures got very low, and we also got the first rain today. Tomorrow it's going to be a bit annoying to commute if it will rain again, but I am not too mad at finally having proper autumnal weather. I am walking around the house wrapped in a blanket at all times, but that is my regular form for most of the year. I am still feeling a bit stuck with my crochet project, so I am trying not to force myself, because it's a hobby and not a job, but at the same time I would like to pick it up again because since my energies are so low I am spending more of my free time watching digital screens and it's not ideal. The thing is that I would normally read in my free time to shut off my brain and relax, but right now I am way too tired to also read in my free time. I end up listening to podcasts which are fun, but if I am not crocheting while doing that I am either playing some mindlss games or coloring on my tablet, which is still a digital screen, and my eyes aren't happy about it. I am thankfully getting a bit of reading done with graphic novels since I have decided to reread the first five volumes of Something Is KIlling The Children, but I feel like I haven't found the right balance for my free time yet.

Cozy hobbit autumn activities and productivity:

read first thing in the morning

daily Irish practice on duolingo (after creating yet again a review plan to go alongside the units I have not worked on yet. Because of course right after I was done with my big review they changed everything and now everything looks different and there is some vocab I never worked on)

listened and wrote notes for a lecture of my power practices and men theories class

finished reading and highlighting the article I had to read about The Merchant Of Venice

updated my reading journal

worked on a series of future bookish posts

continued listening to the mistholme museum podcast (which I am really enjoying! I found out about it quite randomly because it was recommended to me on spotify, but now I am really invested in it)

packed my backpack for class tomorrow and picked out an outfit already (being nice to future me so they won't have to worry about it tomorrow)

How do you say Lily or any other flowers? Very curious.

Hey! there are two options for this.

Simple

The easiest way is to say the flower's name in English as a loan word, quite literally.

Eihe ca lily. ↪ I have a lily.

This is perfectly fine and an easy get-out to any flower with a complicated name.

Complex

The more complex way involves describing the flower itself.

Identify the Flower's Key Characteristic: Determine the flower's main feature or two main features, such as its habitat, size, shape, blooming season, and any notable effects or aromas. This is your prefix.

Insert 'Liazu': Liazu means flower; without it, you're just listing random characteristics. You can also swap liazu out for other applicable agents like 'tree' etc., but that's for another day.

Select Appropriate Suffixe/s (if required): Choose suffixes from the list that best match the flower's characteristics. This is optional. If you're adding this, stick an apostrophe between liazu and whatever follows, and capitalise each one.

Combine Elements: Put it all together, and you'll end up with something like this:

Ca metyliazu'ApyAriz. ↪ A weird-shaped flower (which is) thorny and deadly.

Through this, you can create any flower, real or imagined.

Ca wilrikiliazu'GiluNyk. ↪ A large, medicinal flower (which) blooms in the forest during spring.

This is, of course, a long-hand version that's very descriptive. You can strip it all down to something less long and point at the flower in context.

Context: You're pointing at a sunflower. Qi fonaliazu. ↪ That yellow flower.

- did a few dot units—i can feet my reading comprehension getting sturdier, and my speed is improving too, which i appreciate.

- made a rough list of classes i am interested in taking in the autumn quarter.

- recorded the vocab prompts for my 2.1 quiz.

five good things

because it's November already, and therefore definitely time to remind myself there are nice things in the world.

The big one first. I am GOING TO GERMANY FOR CHRISTMAS! We spent Christmas with our friends in Schleswig-Holstein in 2016 and it was honestly the best Christmas we've ever had - and then we haven't managed to do it again, for various reasons. I was chatting with them last month and they invited us, and after some discussion we decided that the missus will stay home with Last Cat Standing just in case (he has an overactive thyroid but is otherwise fine, but we're just a bit paranoid about something unexpected happening given that we lost two cats unexpectedly this year), but I'm going to go, and do a bit of full-immersion German practice :D I booked everything yesterday and I'm ludicrously excited.

I'm writing again! I spent most of September and October feeling distinctly inspiration-free, but the prompts are getting the muses working again, and that feels great.

The missus finishes at her job this week, and is going contracting - and has a contract beginning at the start of December. Which should mean she's considerably happier and less stressed, as the job has been getting steadily worse and worse over the last year or so, with various people who don't know what they're doing being put in positions of authority etc etc. So now she can work for herself, which will suit her much better.

I've been going for long walks at the weekends when the weather hasn't been too hideous, and have discovered a few places I haven't been to before, within walking distance of home. And, much like Lucifer at the end of Season of Mists, I have to admit the autumn leaves are pretty fucking spectacular. XD

I have a really nice Yuletide assignment which is going to involve reacquainting myself with one of my favourite comfort-things, and ought to be an absolute joy to complete.

Speaking of assignments, I've nearly finished the first one for this year's OU course - I'd have sent it in last week (deadline is this Thursday) but the tutor was promising a list of hints and tips a few days before the deadline, so I was waiting for that - which she posted yesterday and doesn't include much I haven't already covered (I think XD ) so I'm going to incorporate that and check it all over tomorrow evening while the missus is out, and then submit, and then get on with next week's work. I'm really enjoying it so far - it's very different from anything I've done before, but really fascinating :D

And I'm ploughing through all the German vocab I kind of abandoned at the beginning of the last course because I didn't have the headspace for it - only another thousand words and phrases to go, and then I'll be able to dip in when the app thinks I need to practise stuff (I'm not quite sure how much time elapses between 'learning' a word and needing to practise it). I've been telling it not to ask me anything I get right first time when the next practice round comes, so the total number I need to practise (I've got about 2800 things in there, which is somewhat overwhelming) should come down gradually. I'm doing practice quizzes of 15 items each, and mostly getting between about 3 and 6 right XD but a lot more of it is coming back to me, so hopefully it'll start to embed itself. This was a whole lot easier when I was 16!

Langblr Reactivation Challenge

Week 1

Day 2: Write a list of goals you have for your target languages. Make both long term and short term goals. An overall goal could be to have the ability to talk with native speakers with ease and a smaller goal would be to finally learn that difficult grammar point that's been plaguing you for ages. How will you achieve them?

Basque: my main target language

Weekly: I plan on sticking to 1 lesson a week from the book "The Basque language: A practical introduction" by Alan R. King. I'll stick to 1 lesson weekly because I bring my notebook with me to uni and do excercises during boring lectures and breaks I have in between (15-min breaks) and I don't even have to do anything at home. It's easier for me sticking to a habit like this.

Small habit: listen to a podcast 2-3x a week (it doesn't matter if I don't, because I listen to Basque songs a lot and on a daily basis anyway). These podcasts aren't to be listened only once because my level is still too low to understand. At this point I just get to understand more of the context of the podcast every time I listen to the same one.

In the next month (until 2023): I need to review all grammar I learned because I feel like I brushed over some parts a bit. I won't force myself to master that grammar but I need a reminder. Same goes for vocab, especially those fillers, words like "just, anyway" etc.

In 6 months: I want to be comfortable enough to go on Tandem app and talk to euskaldunak there. My goal until May-June is to become conversational, so that would be my test to check if I managed it.

Spanish: daily used language

Short-term goals: I don't have because I don't even sit to study anymore, I just pick up things by using it online all the time.

Small habits: I already do the comprehension excercises by listening to Real Madrid players speak Spanish, but I want to find some fun podcasts to listen to sometimes

1 thing on my wishlist: I want to read a book in Spanish, I have bought a middle grade book which I haven't yet had the courage to start because I had a bad experience at trying to read German books, but I know my Spanish is much better, I just kind of have this fear

Long-term goal: take the DELE C1 exam in autumn 2023/spring 2024 (I'm missing some of the basic vocabulary, even for A1, so I need to work on that)

German: I need to regain the level I had

I'm not excited about this because my German is school-taught and I finished school 2 years ago. Now I have a completely different language learning system and I don't know how to apply it to the language I had a broken system for studying. I want to get back to it, hopefully next year, but I still don't know how

Figure out which language to learn next

I won't force myself for this but Here's the list of languages I think I want to take up (from most excited about to somewhat excited/not sure at all):

Keep in mind this list can change anytime, I'm kind of getting the idea of learning Finnish or Hungarian, so I might just randomly take up one of those. 날씨가 쌀쌀해져서 옷을 따뜻하게 입도록 하세요. The weather has gotten chilly so make sure to dress up warm.

가을이 드디어 온 것 같네요. It seems that autumn has finally arrived.

나무들은 단풍이 들기 시작했네요. The trees have started to become autumnal in colour. 

바닥으로 떨어진 잎을 보면 진짜 가을이 온 느낌이 들지. It really starts to feel like autumn when you see leaves on the ground.
