Ever wondered what a dead Auton smells like?
During the Nestene Consciousness's invasion, the Autons were defeated and fell in the streets. Their remains had a pungent odour resembling cabbage, so strong that a poor fella named Nick said he nearly vomited.

Is there an online dictionary you use I could find?
Also, what is "I'm going to poke that with a stick" "I want to poke that with a stick"?
GIL's got it's own dictionary, which right now is being reconstructed along with a full grammar guide. It's available as a living document for anyone particularly interested in the conlang, as long as they don't mind a bit of a crushing mess while things slowly get organised. A better release is planned when it's a bit neater!
'I'm going to poke that with a stick.' ↪ Translation: Ei'qozul qi dam ca zizulai-N.
'I want to poke that with a stick.' ↪ Translation: Eile qozul qi dam ca zizulai.
(Note: 'qi' specifically refers to something that's close to you in time or space. If it's far away from you in time and space, you can replace 'qi' with 'qe'.)
Hope that helped! 😃

Tell me about Het Linc ambassador to the Great Houses from the City of the Saved.
And tell me about Amanda Legend Lefcourt ambassador from the City to Mictlan
Ohh and while we at it how about that Half Human Half Homeworlder Grandfather Halfling and his meddling in the City.
The City of the Saved is a realm where every human who has ever lived is resurrected after death.
💼 Het Linc
Role: Gallifreyan ambassador from the City of the Saved to the Great Houses.
About Het Linc: Het Linc lived for over 30,000 years, filling various roles from philosopher to necromancer, making him a bit of a polymath. His huge knowledge and oodles of charisma eventually led him to become the representative of the City to the Gallifreyan Great Houses.
Why He Was Recalled: Het Linc's charisma and extremely long life eventually led to some friction with the Great Houses. His influence was so strong that some younger Gallifreyans defected to the City, and others were just intimidated by his lifespan, among other things. As a result of a bit of a diplomatic mess, his ambassadorship ended, and he became a successful jeweller.
💼 Amanda Legend Lefcourt
Role: Ambassador from the City of the Saved to Mictlan.
About Amanda Legend Lefcourt: Amanda was a pureblood human born in the city, who got involved in politics and eventually became an ambassador. Initially, she represented the City's interests in Mictlan, another significant realm during the Time War era.
Shifts in Allegiances: Amanda's ambassadorship ended after she granted asylum to a murderer. She then became involved with House Halfling, a group advocating for part-human rights, helping to address discrimination in the City using her political talents.
💼 Grandfather Halfling
Role: Founder of House Halfling and a significant figure in the City of the Saved.
About Grandfather Halfling: Grandfather Halfling is a half-human, half-Homeworlder who founded House Halfling to advocate for part-human rights in the City.
Connection to the Doctor: It's rumoured that Grandfather Halfling might be a version of the Doctor who was resurrected in the City, based on his half-humanity and ties to Compassion, but who knows? 🤷 😉
Hope that helped! 😃

Not sure if this is a question you'd have the resources to answer fully, but I'm asking regardless because you're the only person I know who would be able to answer it at all and have sound logical reasoning. Would it be possible for a Chameleon Arched person to remember their real life from outside the Arch's influence?
I'm not fully convinced I'm reading the question correctly, so please let me know if I've got the wrong end of the stick!
What I'm interpreting is whether a person could recall their real life memories without opening the biodata module (such as a fob watch) or using the Chameleon Arch to regain them.
🫥 The Chameleon Arch - Overview
The Chameleon Arch is a device that alters a Time Lord's biology, creating a new identity completely rewritten DNA and memories. The biodata module, typically a fob watch, stores their true Time Lord essence. When the watch is opened, the Time Lord's original memories and identity are restored.
💡 Residual Memories
It's possible for someone using the Chameleon Arch to retain residual memories from their true Time Lord self, even without opening the biodata module.
Dreams and Recollections: Chameleon Arched Gallifreyans have dreams and faint recollections, like John Smith's bedtime antics or Professor Yana's drumming.
Instincts and Reflexes: Certain instincts or reflexes from their true Time Lord nature persist like John Smith's perfect cricket ball throw tying in very nicely into the natural mechanical abilities Gallifreyans possess, as well as a bit of expertise courtesy of a cricket fixation in the Doctor's 5th body.
Triggers and Familiarity: Words or events that evoke strong memories or reactions trigger residual memories.
Factors Affecting Memory Retention
A few factors could contribute to this residual memory effect:
Strength of the Original Identity: Stronger memories or traits might resurface, suggesting that not all aspects of the original identity are entirely squashed by the arch.
Triggers and Context: Specific words or situations can act as cues, stirring residual memories.
Physical Proximity: Moving closer to the biodata module amplifies the intensity of residual memories.
⚙️ Restoring Memories
Opening the biodata module is the most direct way to recover a Time Lord's memories. While residual memories are almost obligatory, regaining the original identity entirely requires opening the biodata module. Without this, the memories would likely remain fragmented and incomplete, like fleeting glimpses rather than coherent recollections.
🏫 So ...
While it's possible for a Chameleon Arched person to remember aspects of their true identity without opening the biodata module, these memories are usually fragmented or triggered by specific events. Full restoration typically requires opening the module and reuniting the person with their Time Lord essence and memories, else they'd probably just be wandering around with some memories of completely impossible things wondering when they went insane.
I really hoped that helped, and if this wasn't what you meant please let me know and I'll happily try again 🫡

Ha, that'd be fun 🤣
This has a few variations for hyper-specificity:
Rikijai = surgeon etc. (one who repairs the body)
Zykijai = psychiatrist etc. (one who repairs the machine (brain))
Rizykijai = doctor/all around healer (one who repairs the body and the machine (brain))
These are more general terms (like for jobs) - you can suffix these with gender particles (po, mo, zo) to specify a particular individual.
Rikijaipo = The Surgeon [male]
Zykijaimo = The Psychiatrist [female]
Rizykijaizo = The Doctor [gender neutral]
Or just add an Honorific to make it their title.
Poja-Rikijai = Honorable Surgeon man
Moja-Zykijai = Honorable Psychiatrist woman
Zoja-Rizykijai = Honorable Doctor [gender neutral]
Ja-Rizykijai = Honorable Doctor [no gender]
I'm going to stop here before I end up writing a whole module 😅
Hi, I remember reading somewhere that there was a Gallifreyan word for healer/medic/doctor that was "hélar" or maybe "hélar"- was that from your institute?
From @theangelshavethephonebox
Neither "hélar" nor "télar" or anything resembling those words, are part of the Institute's language database in relation to healer/doctor/medic. I took the liberty of doing some digging to see if I could find any mention of them for you, but I've come up empty.😕

Is there such thing as "gifted kids" on Gallifrey? (also, would it make sense that, if they are, that they'd go to the Academy earlier in life because brain buffing took less time?) <ps. I am very well aware that logical conclusions may be the only way to answer this question>
Very interesting question, let's have a poke around and see what we can come up with ...
What happens with 'gifted kids' on Gallifrey?
Gallifreyan education follows quite a rigid path, with all childrene going through brainbuffing and then the Schism initiation at age 8. Even those considered 'gifted' seem to follow a similar timeline without fast-tracking to the Academy.
🌱 Advanced Topics During Brainbuffing
In Gallifreyan brainbuffing (a period of time after birth/loom where they learn an immense amount of knowledge in a tiny space of time), gifted childrene can study more challenging subjects earlier than their less gifted peers.
🚪 No Early Entry
Although gifted students in brainbuffing could run through much more advanced topics, this doesn't mean they're fast-tracked to the Academy, suggesting that a structured timeline is followed regardless of individual skill levels. This consistency aligns pretty well with the broader cultural emphasis on discipline, duty, and a common experience, ensuring that all Gallifreyan childrene develop a sense of community and shared learning, reflective of the ideas of the Matrix. (See: How does the Matrix work?)
⚖️ Case Studies
There are certainly gifted childrene on Gallifrey, usually with talents in certain areas. A few Gallifreyans noted to be particularly all-around intelligent:
Ushas (AKA the Rani);
Vansell;
Tebediatroculozan, one of the best brains of his generation.
Ushas and Vansell are noted to have probably started a couple of semesters before the Doctor/the Master etc. and gained their title of Junior Time Lords earlier than them. However, so did Rallon, who although was in the Deca, isn't explicitly noted to be particularly gifted, suggesting that's more of a chronological thing rather than any form of fastracking.
It should also be noted that in one version of events, Vansell was recruited by the Celestial Intervention Agency before he even attended the Academy, which suggests gifted kids might be accelerated in different ways ... *insert shrug here* 🤔
🏫 So ...
Being gifted doesn't appear to typically lead to early Academy entry. The Gallifreyan educational system seems to prioritise a standardised approach, emphasising a fairly consistent timeline for all students, even those with exceptional abilities.
Hope that helped! 😃

What does a traditional family/House dynamic look like, especially in terms of children?
[Does the whole House live in one large building, or is the House more of a common family space? Are children usually cared for by their parents, or is child minding more of a communal responsibility along the lines of "it takes a village to raise a child"? Etc.] < please treat these questions as additional questions like the ones on a school test that the teacher puts in to make sure that the student understands the original big question. I only included them so you could know what I meant when I say "House/family dynamic", because I know that can be confusing
Gosh, I wish you'd have written my exams.
What does a traditional family/House dynamic look like?
Houses are both residences and familial hubs containing a lot of related Gallifreyans. Here's what the dynamic typically looks like, especially when it comes to raising children:
🏠 Brief House Overview
First, a bit of context - Gallifreyan Houses are huge, often sentient structures. They're designed to support entire extended families, often containing multiple generations.
Interior Design: Houses often have high ceilings, large rooms, and sprawling corridors. This setup is on purpose - designed to make newly loomed Gallifreyans feel like children (many loomlings are created with fully-grown adult bodies).
Living Spaces: Houses contain individual bedrooms, communal living spaces, and operational facilities such as the Loomshed. They also have their own crypts for dead House members.
Animated Features: The Houses often have animated furniture, which, if not properly trained, might chase people around. Paintings whisper at passing cousins, and Druges, large automated humanoid servants, roam the premises, performing various duties.
👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Family Dynamics
Gallifreyan families tend to be large and very hierarchical, with cousins, aunts, uncles, and other relatives living under the same roof. There's a strong thread of communal responsibility and shared upbringing when it comes to childrene (childe = singular, childrene = plural):
Childcare: Childrene are typically cared for by a combination of their parents and other relatives. Parents are present and will look after their child, performing the usual trips out to the galactic zoo or whatever.
Education: The responsibility for education and upbringing is communal, with older House members playing a significant role in brainbuffing (the educational process designed to shape young Gallifreyan minds). This is supported by the help of Avatroids - mechanical beings who were (basically) enslaved by the Time Lords. The boy Doctor had his own personal Avatroid named Badger, whose job it was to protect and educate him.
Communal Responsibilities: Given the House's size and structure, childcare is often a collective effort. The extended family takes part in guiding the children's education and development, with the aim of instilling a sense of duty and obedience ie. House values.
🧒 Children and Brainbuffing
As mentioned, childrene undergo brainbuffing, a rigorous educational process that equips them with a ton of knowledge before they step out into the big wide world. This process involves both formal schooling and informal training at home.
Early Education: During the first eight years, childrene are educated in writing, culture, mathematics, and science, surpassing the knowledge level of many human college students. Extended family members play a significant role in this process.
Traditional Activities: Despite the emphasis on duty, childrene can happily engage in activities like lushberrying and playing with onion dolls. However, there are no playgrounds on Gallifrey due to the focus on obedience.
Communal Upbringing: The entire House contributes to the upbringing, fostering a strong sense of community and collective responsibility.
🔥Then Comes Life
At the age of eight, children are snatched away from all of this and put into Chapter Academies away from their Houses and families for around 200 years. Bummer.
🏫 So ...
Gallifreyan Houses blend family living with communal responsibilities. They focus on fostering a sense of duty and service, with a significant emphasis on education and discipline. While parents play a crucial role in raising childrene, the communal approach ensures that every child has a network of support and guidance throughout their early years, which is then completely turned on its head.
Hope that helped! 😃

🤔🦨 Do Gallifreyans Have a Super Sense of Smell?
Curious about the olfactory capabilities of Gallifreyans? Let's have a sniff around it.
👃 Smelling Across Time and Space: Gallifreyans have a very sensitive sense of smell due to the large number of receptors in their noses. This allows them to smell odours at a chemical level, leading to some unique abilities, like as being able to track time and sniff out other universes.
🧠 Logical Conclusions from Scents: This sensitivity goes beyond just identifying smells. Gallifreyans can draw logical conclusions from the odours they smell, whether it's determining a person's origin or uncovering clues about a specific time period.
⚠️ Challenges: Despite this, Gallifreyans can experience issues like anosmia, parosmia, and phantosmia, though these are usually secondary to disease or injury.
So, super sniffing skills are basic Gallifreyan sensory tools, helping them follow their nose to sniff out trouble and make sense of scents. (Oof. Sorry.)

Traditional gallifreyan views on divorce?
Gallifreyan Views on Divorce
While we know a tiny bit about how marriages work (see: How does marriage and dating work on Gallifrey?), the specifics of divorce are completely unknown.
🔎 Gallifreyan Marriages
Gallifreyan marriages tend to be about strategic alliances between Houses and power grabs etc. Given their extended lifespans and the very hierarchical nature of society, marriages are more about stability and duty rather than romantic inclination. However, a minority of Gallifreyans are known to have married for love, showing that emotions can be a reason, though probably not in line with society.
🔄 Divorce in Gallifreyan Society
Given the traditional nature of Gallifreyan marriages, divorce could be viewed as a significant disruption to the societal order. Surprise, surprise, there are no clear guidelines or references to Gallifreyan divorce practices, but as always, we can speculate on their impact:
Political Implications: Given the strategic nature of many marriages, divorce would significantly destabilise alliances and political structures.
Cultural Stigma: Divorce could be seen as a failure to uphold the societal values of duty and responsibility, possibly leading to loss of status or respect for the married people and their Houses.
Legal Complications: The absence of information on divorce might tell us that the process is really rare.
🏫 So ...
While specific details about Gallifreyan divorce aren't exactly plentiful, the intensely hierarchical nature of Gallifreyan society would probably make divorce more trouble than it's worth. The emphasis on strategic alliances might mean that those who are married are encouraged to work through issues, or otherwise just live in mutual resentment for the good of the Houses.
Hope that helped! 😃

Does their enhanced peripheral nervous system mean that a gallifreyan could deal with, say, chronic pain, on their own( at least until I can convince mine to go back to Gallifrey for a checkup)?
Gallifreyan Pain/Chronic Pain Management
Nerve manipulation definitely plays a part in pain management, but Gallifreyans have a few additional techniques to help manage pain effectively, which your Gallifreyan would have already been taught.
🤕 Pain Management
Endorphin Production: Gallifreyans can consciously stimulate the production of endorphins - the body's natural pain relievers. This allows them to reduce the intensity of severe pain. However, this obviously has its limits, and endorphins will only take the edge off for short periods.
Nerve Manipulation: Gallifreyans can manipulate their nerves to some extent and regulate their response to pain. This involves controlling blood flow, potentially leading to localised numbness. However, this form of control is pretty limited and really not suitable for all types of chronic pain for obvious reasons!
Limitations: While endorphin production and nerve manipulation can help manage pain, these methods might not be enough for long-term relief. If pain persists or becomes too severe, more extensive medical intervention may be required.
Drug Intervention: Human analgesics can be used supplemental to help your Gallifreyan manage pain, but they usually require increased doses compared to humans. Non-opioid painkillers like paracetamol are recommended for mild pain. Stronger Earth painkillers would need a prescription and may be harder to obtain on Earth for your Gallifreyan. Aspirin should be avoided completely due to the risk of severe allergic reactions, potentially leading to coma, death, or forced regeneration.
🔄 Healing Coma and Advanced Techniques
Gallifreyans can enter a healing coma when pain or damage becomes overwhelming. This state allows the body to focus entirely on healing, which can help cure the cause of chronic pain/severe injuries. While this is spectacularly handy, it should only be used when absolutely necessary, as it effectively shuts down normal bodily functions temporarily and makes the Gallifreyan very vulnerable.
🏫 So ...
While Gallifreyan pain management techniques can cope with some issues, chronic pain often requires specialised care to improve their quality of life and prevent further complications or long-term damage. If your Gallifreyan is experiencing chronic pain, please encourage them to get a checkup on Gallifrey and seek advice from a medical professional.
Hope that helped! 😃

Is it possible for a gallifreyan to have memories from prior to their birth/looming?
Can a Gallifreyan have memories from before their birth/looming?
🧬 The Looming Process
For an overview on looming, see What is looming and how does it exist alongside natural reproduction?
Looms integrate both DNA and biodata to create a unique Gallifreyan. Memetic priming gives loomlings some foreknowledge prior to birth, but this generally refers to basic knowledge needed for early life, rather than specific memories.
🔍 Instances of Pre-Birth Memories
Despite Looming's structured nature, there's a unique case in which a Gallifreyan reports having memories from before their birth.
Have a wild guess who that is 🤪
The Doctor has claimed to remember existing in the House of Lungbarrow's Loom before actual birth and describes a consciousness/awareness as the Loom spat the poor, confused little fella out. Reasons for this are convoluted and non-specific, and what could be described as 'LoreHell'. To be extremely brief:
Reincarnation: According to some accounts, the Doctor was loomed from the biodata of the Other, a figure from Gallifreyan legend who is believed to have thrown himself into the Loom before the Doctor was born. [more]
Have you tried turning the Loom off and on again?: The Doctor's part of what's known as the 'broken generation', where Loom produced renegades, which may or may not have something to do with the Other's actions. Maybe the Loom was just being a bit glitchy and needed a reboot.
Loom Warfare: Houses are known to secretly tamper with other Houses' looms, resulting in odd or even mutant loomlings.
House Hotfix Error: The Houses themselves like to tweak their Looms to produce the cousins they want. Maybe someone didn't finish doing up a bolt or something.
Timeless Child: It might have something to do with the Timeless Child (I'm sure Professor Chibnall could advise you after class).
🏫 So ...
While it's uncommon for Gallifreyans to retain memories from before their birth or looming, cases like the Doctor's suggest that it's possible under specific conditions. This might be related to biodata inheritance, unique circumstances during looming, or other unknown factors. It's up to you, and just how far you want to dive into this particular hellfire.
Hope that helped! 😃

Do gallifreyans do the whole "recreational sex" thing? I don't think I've ever heard of a species that does quite the way humans do, and it's intriguing to me.
📜 Biological and Cultural Factors
While Gallifreyans have the biological capacity for it, their approach to sex is affected by a combination of physiological control and cultural norms:
Biological Control: Gallifreyans can regulate their physiological responses. This control might allow them to engage in or abstain from sexual activities based on personal choice rather than biological drive.
Social and Cultural Norms: Gallifreyan society is deeply rooted in traditions and laws emphasising duty, service, and intellectual pursuits. Sex, as humans understand it, just doesn't hold the same social value in Gallifreyan culture.
Looming: For a significant part of Gallifreyan history, sexual reproduction was largely replaced by Looming. This practice contributed to a general lack of focus on sex. [See: What is looming and how does it exist alongside natural reproduction? and How is sexual education taught on Gallifrey?]
Asexuality: Given all of this, many Gallifreyan individuals exhibit a kind of asexuality, where sexual desire and recreational sex just aren't important.
🎭 Recreational Sex Practices
While the concept of recreational sex may not be as prevalent or openly discussed in Gallifreyan society as it is in human culture, we know that these practices do exist. Some Gallifreyans enjoy erotic dancers, suggesting an appreciation for sensuality, and there are even a couple of brothels in the Low Town of Gallifrey, suggesting that recreational sex is acknowledged but not broadly accepted/practised/in demand.
⏲️ Looking Ahead
Of course, the fairly recent return of natural birth to Gallifrey signals a spanner in the works, where sex is now something that actually has a purpose - procreation. We can only wait and see how this shifts the social landscape of Gallifrey, but it'll probably take some time. Until then, it's very much an individual decision for each and every Gallifreyan as to whether they care or not.
🏫 So ...
The Gallifreyan approach to recreational sex is a mix of biological capability and cultural heritage. While they have the biological means for it, Gallifrey has an environment where recreational sex (and sex in general) is not such a big deal as it is in human culture, and probably won't be for a while to come.
Hope that helped! 😃

Some records say a Time Lord's collarbones are also very sensitive... Does it have to do with the nerve endings?
The Gallifreyan Shoulder Nerve Cluster
Only one collarbone is particularly sensitive - the left one, directly due to a bundle of nerves located in that area.
🤔 Where Is It?
Here's a simple test you can do sitting right there: Run your fingers just under your left collarbone, pressing lightly. Just before you reach your shoulder, you should feel a slight dip. This is where a nerve ganglion is located in a Time Lord.
⚡ The Nerve Ganglion
This nerve cluster is one of several distributed throughout the Gallifreyan body (another is in the brain, and another between the hearts). Here's why this particular ganglion under the left collarbone is so significant:
Physical Vulnerability: Because this ganglion is close to the collarbone, even a slight impact in this area can trigger intense pain, spasms, or breathlessness.
Incapacitation: A forceful blow to this area will KO a Time Lord due to the sensitive nerve cluster's direct link to vital bodily functions. This makes it an effective point for instant incapacitation in combat or other high-risk situations.
Medical Risks: Given its high sensitivity, medical procedures near the left collarbone need real planning. The proximity to the nerve ganglion means that any procedure or accidental trauma could lead to severe pain or other unintended physiological effects, such as respiratory distress or damaging changes in hearts rate.
Peripheral Nervous System: Gallifreyans have a more extensive peripheral nervous system than humans, with more nerve endings that are highly sensitive. This increased sensitivity contributes to the intense reactions caused by the ganglion.
Lack Of Control: Gallifreyans usually have pretty good control over most of their systems, but they can't do much about this.
🏫 So ...
It's not both collar bones that are sensitive; it's just the one, but it's a goodun. Like a Dalek's eyestalk or a Sontaran's probic vent, it's essentially the Time Lord's weak spot. Take care out there.
Hope that helped! 😃

Are time lords ticklish?
Are Gallifreyans/Time Lords ticklish?
🤣 What Causes Ticklishness?
Ticklishness in humans comes from light, unexpected touches that stimulate a reaction involving both the nervous system and the brain. This response isn't fully understood, but it's believed to be partly an evolutionary mechanism and partly a social interaction tool. Tickling activates areas of the brain associated with pleasure and pain, creating a sensation that can be both very annoying and slightly enjoyable at the same time.
Tumblr media
🧠 Sensory Architecture of Time Lords
Advanced Sensory Systems: Time Lords are equipped with sensory capabilities far surpassing those of ordinary humans. This suggests a heightened responsiveness to physical stimuli, which include the light, unexpected touches associated with being ticklish.
Neurological Nuance: Considering the human analogy—where ticklish reactions are often involuntary and linked to surprise—it's plausible to assume that Time Lords, with their intricate neural networks, also exhibit the response under the right circumstances.
Regeneration and Sensitivity: Each regeneration brings about a new set of physical and psychological traits. As such, the degree of ticklishness could vary significantly from one incarnation to the next, with some incarnations potentially more receptive than others.
A Matter of Physiology: However, given their ability to control and regulate bodily functions far beyond human capabilities, it is conceivable that some Time Lords might choose to suppress these sensations, perhaps viewing them as distractions or unnecessary responses.
🏫 So...
Gallifreyans are definitely ticklish, but only if they allow it. Whether for defence, play, or as an involuntary quirk of their biology, let's all pray the Daleks don't replace those plungers with feathers, cos that could get messy.
Hope that helped! 😃
