I’m sorry, but I'm still not over this. There is very little tweaking that would need to be done to the Season 5 finale of Miraculous Ladybug to make it a series finale (and it very well could have been one!), and thus how would these major antagonists have concluded their runs?
Gabriel Agreste / Hawk Moth / Shadow Moth / Monarch: He basically wins; sucker-punching Marinette and at last obtaining the two Miraculouses he’d always been after, using them to rewrite reality so that his wife is resurrected in exchange for his own life (since he was dying anyway). Adrien (who now only has memories of him as a good father and not an abusive bastard) and most of Paris is left oblivious to his crimes, and he even gets honored as a hero who sacrificed his life to defeat his own supervillainous alter-ego once and for all.
Nathalie Sancoeur / Mayura: Her fatal illness is removed and she gets to live a peaceful life alongside her new girlfriend Emilie Agreste. Her crimes against Paris also go undiscovered.
Tomoe Tsurugi: She’s now in charge of Gabriel’s business, and still an active member of a creepy secret eugenics cult dedicated to replacing humanity with perfected sentimonsters.
Felix Fathom / Argos: He keeps the Peacock Miraculous he obtained through a horrific betrayal that led to devastating consequences for all of Paris and now even has a girlfriend.
Lila Rossi / Iris Verdi / Cerise: Her being exposed as a liar and expelled from school ended up meaning jack shit since “Lila Rossi” is just one identity of this person who’s apparently always been an aspiring supervillain, complete with her own evil lair and special resources. And now she’s obtained the Butterfly Miraculous, so things can only continue to go her way.
Chloe Bourgeois: She earns the hatred of all of Paris which she is forced to leave behind, loses all her power and privileges, her father disowns her in favor of her half-sister, her friend and minion Sabrina turns on her, Adrien wants nothing more to do with her, Marinette wins a final victory over her on behalf of all the students she’s bullied over the years, and she’s trapped in the custody of her abusive mother who intends to take her abuse to a new level.
OK, yeah, as I think we can all see: one of these things is not like the others!
Seriously, Thomas Astruc, what is your damage in regards to the character of Chloe!?

I honestly have to question the sanity of the ML Fandom sometimes.
Felix has Manipulated Marinette, mocked and belittled Adrien for being a victim, killed the entire city of Paris for kicks. And now, stalked, kidnapped and gaslight Kagami so severely she’s acting like a completely different person.
Just from a few stills and dialogue. (I want to wait for the English dub before I see the episode to get all the context.) Kagami shows all the red flags of being in an abusive relationship.
She feels isolated from her friends. To the point where she only trusts Felix.
She’s acting the way she thinks Felix wants her to act.
She’s making excuses for him, when he does things she would never tolerate from another person.
There is no way around this. Felix, is Kagami’s abusive boyfriend. This arc isn’t his redemption, it’s his origin story.
Just let it be known that when his goals no longer oppose Gabriel's and he turns full on villain in season 6. I called it!

How many Felixes are there in the Lady Bug universe?! What is the difference between Felix Agreste from Lady Bug PV and Felix Sphinx? did they have different characters and personalities? How are they different and how are they similar? Was Felix always a morally gray character (anti-hero/anti-villain) or is there still a version where he was an antagonist, sociopath or Marinette's arch rival?
LOl ok slow down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe in mini-menace there might have been a rivalry. Chat is only present in one cover, and another cover where he is implied to be hunting ladybug via the black cat and ladybug.
However, My favorite idea is that chat noir may be the detective investigating Ladybug for her vigilantism and/or involvement in the gang involved in the murder of her parents.
Tumblr media
Since then, Chat noir was always designed to be her partner.
Tumblr media
even if that "partnership" is less than ideal on Marinette's (Or Nathan, as I like to call this version of Chat) part. This dynamic was phased out pretty quickly, about the end of the QK phase of development.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is no "Felix Agreste" the PV "Felix" is actually Adrien Nanty. (Felix Nanty, if you want to stick the felix name.) His father was actually a hotel baron (think chloe's dad sans the mayorship) and his mother was present and doting, especially due to his disability. (That whole narrative is really ableist and deserves its own breakdown) And he's actually quite sweet, as depicted in a ton of the bibles as thinking fondly of Marinette and turning to her for advice quite frequently. He's also depicted as wanting to be a doctor, so he funnels all his free time into studying. (Which is most likely what he was doing in the library during PV)
Tumblr media
Not to say that his name was never "Felix", because it was. But by the time PV rolled around, his name had been changed to Adrien.
Felix Sphinx is the idea that If Adrien -> Gabriel, than Felix -> Richard. And Richard Sphinx -> Felix Sphinx. He's an interesting villain who fills that shitty father role way better than Gabriel. (who was actually really pompous and silly in his first incarnation after they phased out Richard)
Tumblr media
How many Felixes are there in the Lady Bug universe?
One at a time. Be it Nathan, Adrien, or Felix himself. The character went through tons of development. Felix Fathom is not a "Felix" because he is not Chat Noir. He is a new character, original to the series like Kagami and Luka.
What is the difference between Felix Agreste from Lady Bug PV and Felix Sphinx?
Agreste's dad is Gabriel, Sphinx' Dad is Richard Sphinx. PV Felix' parents are not shown, but it is most likely he is Adrien Nanty, who's parents are alive, not evil, and own a hotel. However, since the identity of Papillon is kept a mystery in all media (including Canon for a time) it is possible that pv Felix is Sphinx. But the characters are similar enough that it could be interchangeable. Who knows.
did they have different characters and personalities? How are they different and how are they similar?
Yes. But not in the way you think. Nanty and Sphinx liked Marinette. Nathan found her annoying. Adrien did not have an opinion on her for a long time- (esp if we are to base it all on episode 1/introducing the characters, Adrien was indifferent and distant)
Was Felix always a morally gray character (anti-hero/anti-villain) or is there still a version where he was an antagonist, sociopath or Marinette's arch rival?
Err... Morally grey, maybe in QK stuff and canon. Where he aims for ladybugs affection instead of being a hero. Antagonist maybe in Mini Menace. But sociopath? Canon maybe. Adrien frequently throws tantrums and threatens people, is viciously jealous, and has threatened and blackmailed plagg at least three times (remember kuro neko where feeling left out > his relationship with Plagg) but, again, PV era Felix/Adrien isn't an asshole or a jerk. He just has teenage angst and suffers from the twilight sparkle disease of "stop studying, make some friends, and touch grass" jfc.
Look, I know people are super ride or die on "cursed ring needs a kiss" stuff but there is more evidence to the contrary. The artbook is a great resource, but it was made by another company, and the curse is never mentioned anywhere else. I don't doubt that there was a phase where they did consider it, but it vanished so quickly that it was mentioned only once and then disappeared. Yet nobody uses other details like.. him wanting to be a doctor... Or his boxing... Or him being super into art... Or even his love of BMX. Yeah.
Anyway. Hope this helps.

Beach Day with the Last Legacy M3
Because we were robbed of a canon beach episode.
Word count: 1,917
Warnings: None that I can think of, but if you notice any please let me know!
Felix didn't want to go to the beach at all, and he made his opinion well known through sarcastic comments throughout the week leading up to the event.
"If I wanted to bake myself I could just step into the oven."
"No, I love the beach. I'm especially fond of how you carry masses of sand home with you afterwards, like a second trip."
"All I'm saying is the sea beasts have a point, devouring beachgoers. I would do the same if the rancor arrived at my doorstep."
He even thought he'd be able to use sleeping in as an excuse, purposefully ignoring the sounds of his companions readying themselves for the day outside of his chamber doors. However, he was unable to carry out his plan to fruition when Sage somehow breaks through the locks (and wards) of his door, ripping the blankets from Felix's pretend-sleeping form and bringing him upright in bed. From the hallway, Felix hears Anisa yell something about having "less than an hour" before departure, and he sighs, knowing he's lost this fight.
Felix spends most of the morning choosing what books to bring along and casting anti-sunburn wards on himself. He deliberately chooses a thick, yellowed tome on ancient runes to disguise the romance novel he actually plans on reading while there (which is also conveniently beach-themed). Reluctantly, he dresses in his outfit for the day (I like to imagine his bathing suit is one of those old-timey, striped suits with a sheer black cover-up robe on top), and goes to make himself a strong cup of tea before departure.
Once arriving at the beach, Felix does not help set up a site for the day, insisting that it was Anisa or Sage’s idea in the first place, so he should be excluded from the effort on principle. This is with the exception of the umbrella, though, because Sage always stakes it in the “wrong” place. He sits under the umbrella for most of the day, enjoying his novel and sipping on the wine Anisa so generously remembered to pack for him, keeping it cool with magic. He’s not exactly relaxed, it’s still dreadfully hot out, and the chair he reclines in is not nearly as comfortable as the thick cushions he rests on at Fathom, but the day still washes easily over him, and Felix is silently grateful for the variety.
Felix has a quiet reverence for the ocean. Its vastness, its depth; it reminds him a lot of magic. The way it is both a familiar presence and unfathomable mystery, its balance of chaos and predictability; these qualities sit in a familiar juxtaposition in his mind, and Felix pleasantly  watches the waves crash over the tops of his pages.
While grazing on some of the snacks Anisa packed, his back turned to the ocean, Felix felt something sink in the pit of his stomach. Before he could turn around, he felt large, strong arms envelop him, lifting him from his place on the ground. He recognized it as Sage before he even saw his face. Felix protested, threatening spells and fire and dismemberment, but Sage did not relent until Felix felt the water lapping at his ankles.
“Still want me to put you down?” Sage asked, a tinge of mischief in his voice.
“Yes, you absolute beast -” Felix started, but was cut off with a mouthful of salt water as Sage dropped him directly into the waves.
“See? S’not so bad.” Sage makes out between booming laughter, and for perhaps the first time that day Felix agrees with him.

Anisa spent most of the day before the trip preparing. This meant that she spent at least half of the day picking out exactly what could go wrong, and making plans for whatever she would be able to do about it, and preparing supplies accordingly.
First aid kit? Check. Extra sunscreen? Packed.
Weapons? Already tucked into the bottom of the picnic basket.
A spare pan and firestarter in case she finds a dolphin and finally gets the chance to try it? It was one of the first things she packed. After all, you showed up out of nowhere, there’s a chance a dolphin might as well.
Where Anisa really spent most of her time, though, was the picnic basket she prepared. Anisa genuinely believes that food is a love language, and the attention to detail she pays to each meal she prepares is a testament to this. She made little sandwiches, cut the crust off of the edges, and folded them neatly into colorful napkins. She chopped fruit and carefully packaged it in containers for herself, Felix, and Sage to snack on later. She even included some of Felix’s favorite wine (she figured anything that may sweeten his sour mood was well worth the space spent to carry it along) and some street cakes from the market for Sage. She took pride in her work and wanted to make sure she put forth every effort to make the day as perfect as possible.
She could hardly sleep the night before the trip, thinking about how long it had been since she actually had fun and enjoyed herself; much less with her group of friends in tow. It excited her, stirring butterflies in her stomach at the idea of it all, but also felt somehow strange. In her late 20s, could she still enjoy the beach like she had as a child? Could she find respite from the weights of her knightly duties upon her shoulders after carrying them for so long? Despite falling asleep later than she intended, she was the first to wake up, sipping her tea on the balcony at Fathom with a tentative anticipation for the day.
At the beach, Anisa sets up most of the site, unpacking all of her hard work and laying it out on the sand. She sits and watches the waves for a long while at first, remembering times in her youth where she’d sat on similar beaches with her mother. Anisa likes the wildness of the waves, the sounds of other beachgoers around her, and the scent of salt in the air that always seems to work its way into her skin before the day is over.
She wades into the water at Sage’s insistence (meaning, Sage yelling her name at a surprising volume from his place in the water), enjoying the cool feel of the waves against her feet and legs as she adjusts to the temperature difference. Feeling the steady pull and crash of the water against her knees, she feels a joy rise in her chest that she realizes she hasn’t felt in a long time. Anisa splashes Sage with water when she reaches him, but aside from that one act of playfulness she spends the majority of her time swimming alone and enjoying herself in the water.
After a while in the water, Anisa reclines in the sun on one of the towels she brought, resting in the warmth of the sun and idly snacking on some of the fruit she brought. She hears Felix muttering to himself over the novel he’s reading, along with the sound of gulls and other beachgoers, but she allows it to all wash over her over the sound of the waves. She needed this, she thinks.
Raising another piece of fruit to her lips, she decides that she’ll make Sage be the one to pack and carry all the supplies back.

Sage was objectively the one most excited to go to the beach; probably because he was the one who objectively did the least amount of preparation for the event. He’s always been a “go with the flow” sort of guy, so when the invitation presented itself he took it, no questions asked and no sense of responsibility attached.
Sage used to hate the beach. As a child, he used to fish from it (and steal fish from the other fishermen there) to feed himself and Tulsi. There was a time when the salty air and rhythmic crashing of waves caused similar waves of adrenaline to roll throughout his body. Nonetheless, he has just as many pleasant memories at the beach - swimming, drinking, and spending days in the sun before he joined the Starsworn. If he tries, he can still recall some drunken evenings with Lucan and other Griefers on the beach despite the haze his alcohol consumption at the time placed over his memories.
The morning of the day, Sage rolled out of bed, feeling surprisingly well-rested and ready for the day ahead of him. Having long since misplaced (or did one of his companions misplace it for him?) his admittedly tight leather swimsuit, he opts to dress himself in a simple pair of shorts and his telltale red coat. Of course, Sage still has at least two knives hidden with him for the day ahead, but he leaves his sword at Fathom.
He passes Anisa in the hallway and tells her to calm down, that today was supposed to be about relaxation, and is promptly i(playfully) hit upside the head with one of her umbrellas. Sage listens to her mutter to herself about Felix still lazing in bed, though, and makes it his business to take at least this off of her plate and wake Felix up.
When he arrives at the beach, he immediately runs into the water. He enjoys the feeling of the sun on his skin, the way it warms him completely from the top of his head to his feet. He enjoys the feel of the current, its pull against his body, knowing that he’ll still feel it long after he’s departed from the beach as he lies in bed that night. Pleasant memories of his childhood spent at the beach float to the surface of his mind as he floats on the surface of the water, more relaxed than he’s felt in weeks.
Of course, this relaxation is short-lived when Anisa decides to take a dip in the water, but the playful interaction is welcome as Sage swings his arm across the surface of the water to splash her.
Looking back to shore, he notices Felix still in the same spot he’d been in all day. Sage knew Felix wasn’t a fan of fun, but he finds it absolutely ridiculous the way Felix will spend this one day outside of Fathom with his nose buried in a book.
“Do you think he’s always been so uptight?” Sage asks, golden eyes still fixed on Felix.
Anisa scoffs. “I think Escell must’ve given him textbooks and an abacus to play with as a child.”
It’s at this moment that Sage decides that if Felix won’t have any fun on his own, maybe he could use a little help. He slings Felix over one of his shoulders and brings him out into the water, laughing all the way despite his protests.
When the day is finally over, Sage makes a big show of complaining as Anisa insists that he be the one to re-pack and carry all of their supplies back. Sage protests at first, even threatening to the others that he would simply spend the night at the beach rather than to do any of that, but he eventually agrees.
Over a series of grunts, expletives, and some admittedly poor attempts at folding, Sage repeats an exasperated question.
“Annie, how in the hells did you manage to pack all this into one stupid basket?”

It just hit me - assuming things don’t change in the following season, what was done with Felix Fathom in Miraculous Ladybug’s 5th season is what many Lotor stans wanted to transpire with Lotor in Voltron: Legendary Defender. While not lacking in nuance, Felix and Lotor were both firmly established as arrogant, scheming, manipulative villains with a pronounced cruel streak. Now, Lotor carried on like this until all of a sudden he joined the heroes’ side. And while he consistently did the right thing from this point, we missed the crucial step of him ever truly repenting of his previous wrong-doings. In fact, he justified them, saying it was for the greater good in stopping his abusive father’s empire. The heroes just ended up rolling with it, and Lotor even got a girlfriend in Allura, and his stans were perfectly satisfied with this. “He’s a poor sad victim of abuse, so he was justified in all that villainy we saw him do! Let him have this redemption even if the first step to having a redemption at all is non-existent on his part!” Needless to say, they were shocked and remain furious when it was revealed that Lotor, having excused all his evil-doing and been given a free pass for it, was still in fact doing evil in secret and hadn’t redeemed himself at all. WOW! The guy who never grasped or acknowledged why what he did was wrong is still doing wrong because he still thinks what he’s doing is right!? Who’da thunk!? Besides everyone paying attention, that is!
Felix in Season 5 of Miraculous reached the culmination of his villainy when, as the supervillain Argos, he pulled a Thanos and began snapping humanity out of existence so that sentimonsters like him, Adrien and Kagami could live without risk of being controlled or destroyed. Cool motive, still mass murder. He only reverses it after Adrien and Kagami make it clear that it’s not what they want and that they will never forgive him unless he reverses it. Then, in the following episode, he shows no remorse for what he did or sincere desire to atone, but instead just tells Kagami he’s fallen in love with her and reveals his backstory of his father’s abuse of him and how that shaped his view on humanity. Accepting this as a justification rather than an explanation, Kagami deems Felix to have been “misjudged”, returns his affection, and gets him as Argos to be accepted as part of the Miraculous superhero team, which Marinette bafflingly accepts even though Felix’s treachery is the only reason Gabriel became the Monarch to begin with and caused her no end of mental and emotional anguish....to say nothing of the fact that, again, Felix is fresh off of committing momentary genocide on the human race. All of that just gets swept under the rug completely.
It’s so bizarre that the same show that draws such a firm stance on “being a poor sad victim of abuse doesn’t automatically entitle you to a redemption, it has to be properly earned” in regards to Chloe totally walks it back with Felix. Then again, it is Thomas Astruc we’re talking about, so I guess it’s not so bizarre after all. Makes me appreciate Lotor all the more, though!

Why Alastor works where other's fail.
So anyone who follows my blog knows that I have a large distaste for the growing amount of characters who act like villains but always get sob stories in an attempt to make me feel sorry for them. The most glaring example being Felix Fathom from Miraculous Ladybug
Tumblr media
I'm expected to feel bad for this character and feel sympathy for him but his actions are indistinguishable from the villains of the story.
Yet, I don't in fact, I hate him. And I was sure I'd hate this archetype until I watched Hazbin Hotel. And Alastor, despite being a similar type of character swiftly became my favourite.
Tumblr media
So what makes Alastor a good character and Felix fail as a character for me? Well, a big part of it is Alastor is a lot more fun to watch.
youtube
Pretty much every scene he's in Alastor steals the show completely. With a combination of his VAs impeccable performance, the animation distorting in various ways to enhance his creepy effects, and of course that constant smile. Felix doesn't have anywhere near the level of charisma and charm to make it work.
Probably the biggest factor is who these characters direct their hatred and malice towards.
In Alastor's case, while he's clearly not a good person his actions do actually benefit Charlie and Vaggie. The protagonists of the show and ideally the characters you root for. Who does Alastor antagonise? Vox, a character who is depicted with every negative stereotype of CEO's ever, and Adam, the main villain of the story. While he does rile up Lucifer, the bitterness is mutual and hilarious.
Felix on the other hand? He claims to be against Gabriel, but his actions end up helping him and making the lives of two people who have done nothing to him, and in Adrien's case outright love him and do everything he can to help him, suffer. I'm sorry but if a character causes the hero to do this
Tumblr media
They are a villain.
But another major factor is simple. Alastor isn't annoying. What do I mean by that? Well, despite Felix's claims to love Adrien he's caused him quite a lot of trouble. The main instances being gaslighting his friends by pretending to be him and insulting them, then betraying Ladybug making his life as Chat Noir much harder. Yet he's never punished for it and we have to listen to him whine about his daddy issues. Alastor does let slip that something else is going on but he never whines about his "Tragic past" If anything he seems to want to make sure nobody finds out, he even threatens Husk for even mentioning it.
youtube
Nobody likes seeing bad people go unpunished or go on about how hard they have it. Oh? You blew up a building because your child died? Cool motive, still terrorism.
Felix however never shuts up about how hard he has it, and make it everyone else's problem to the point where I lose all sympathy for him.
youtube
Yes Felix, your life is so hard and tragic. Now can we talk about the time you did this?
youtube
Or this
Or THIS?!
youtube
Sexual assault, giving a terrorist magical artefacts and betraying an innocent girl, framing your cousin in the process, and Genocide. But you know... he had a hard childhood.
So maybe I don't hate the archetype. Maybe it's just a bad idea to try and make a character's archetype go against everything they've shown.
In Alastor I see a monster who's taking down other monsters and the narrative shows him as that,
In Felix, while the story wants me to see a tragic anti-hero, all I see is a spoiled brat.

untitled pt. 4.1/?
general notes -- dilf? dad i'd like to fathom
last edit -- 07/07/22
The Antevorte Foundation had its beginnings in the aftermath of the First Liberation War, ninety-one years ago.
The First Liberation War had been a bitter ten-year struggle for independence for Concordia, or as it was collectively known as back then, the Lagrange Colonies. The war technically ended as a loss for Concordia, their bid for independence going unrecognized, but in the end, they ended up with a strategic victory, having severely weakened the various supranational organizations and corporations on Earth to the point of collapse, and securing greater autonomy.
Truthfully, it was a miracle the colonies weren’t completely destroyed and subjugated, seeing as Earth had the overwhelming advantage in numbers and technology for the most part of the ten-year war. The first six years consisted mostly of low-level skirmishes in orbit, the occasional terrorist attack, violent crackdowns in colonies that were thought to be too rebellious, and resembled civil unrest more than a war. Fighting intensified in the seventh and eighth years, with more and more of it spilling into the colonies’ territory, which rightfully led people to believe independence was a doomed cause.
In the ninth year, the tides turned in favour of the colonies when Felix Sun unveiled what S-V Industries called Venators – giant bipedal war machines meant for space combat, modelled after the aerospace workers used for asteroid mining and colony building. They were deadly anti-ship weapons, and so even though the colonies lacked the manpower to really win the war, they managed to force an armistice favourable to their cause.
After the war, Concordia began heavily investing and developing Venators until they came to the challenge of overcoming the average human’s abilities. Then came the Mercury Frame, which sought to push the limitations of what was possible, but of course, that meant that the majority of humans could not pilot them. That was when the Antevorte Foundation came to be – the brainchild of the aerospace-focused S-V Industries, the pharmaceutical company TaRx, and the biotech company Aion Sciences. Their purported raison d’être was to find gifted children and help them achieve their full potential, but in reality, they just sought out children who had the talents to become Mercury Frame pilots and groomed them into becoming ace pilots through less-than-ethical medical procedures and strict training. It wasn’t lost on Symphora that majority of these children of more impoverished backgrounds.
While many initially held the Antevorte Foundation in disdain, that attitude quickly changed with the arrival of the Second Liberation War just sixty-five years later, a far bloodier and costly war that finally won Concordia its full independence in ‘38. The pilots trained by the Antevorte Foundation proved incomparable in their achievements, and so the group was lauded for their achievements.
Every year in February and August, the Antevorte Foundation would host exclusive dinner parties (all paid for by one of the three founding companies) to entice an exclusive list of investors (mostly other old and prestigious corporations, or sometimes other old money families), and to give the children a chance to find a sponsor to ensure a comfortable lifestyle. It was a win-win; the Antevorte Foundation got to show off their achievements, the impoverished children would be able to guarantee a comfortable life for themselves and their families, and the wealthy could pat themselves on the back for a charitable act.
“This feels like putting lipstick on a pig.” Elliot mumbled as he stepped out of her washroom, donning the suit Januaria had lovingly designed for him.
“If you’re a pig, then what would everyone else be?” Symphora finished typing the last of her history assignment and closed her laptop.
The blonde had always gone on and on about how Elliot was the perfect model, and she was inclined to agree. He was a bit shorter than most of his peers at 170 cm, but he lacked the lanky awkwardness that most of them had. He had a pleasant face, one that was always open and friendly, with light brown hair and eyes. It would be a rather herculean task to make him look bad, and even then, Januaria had outdone herself with this. Sure, it was a simple cut, but sometimes that was all that was needed to make an already-pretty thing become beautiful.
“How was this so expensive? I thought it’d look crazy from the price.”
“Good materials and good craftsmanship.” She didn’t have the heart to tell him that the 14 000 denarii price was for the suit only, and didn’t include his shoes. “Sit down over there.”
“Where, the vanity?”
“Mhm.”
“Why?”
“Makeup.” There was a beat of silence before Elliot tried to stand up, but she forced him back down to the chair. “Why do you look so scared? Worried I’ll make you ugly?”
“There’s a 50% chance you’re gonna make me look like a clown, purely for your own amusement.”
“Aw, don’t be like that.” Their skin tones were pretty different, so there wasn’t much she could really do. “I’ll just tidy up your brows, make your skin even glowier, and fix your hair, okay?”
“That doesn’t sound as reassuring as you think it does, Syma.”
“Fine, then you make yourself pretty.” Puffing her cheeks petulantly, she carefully threw herself onto her couch, making sure not to mess with the deceptively simple bun that she had styled at the salon earlier, and tossed him the makeup bag. Elliot laughed, catching it easily as he slipped back into the washroom. Taking one of the stray locks that framed her face, she studied the colour – a dark magenta, almost the same shade as burgundy. When Elliot arrived earlier, his eyes nearly bugged out of his head. She wondered if her father would have a similar reaction.
And as though she had summoned him, three sharp knocks came from her door before it opened, and in stepped her father.
Metellus Sun gave off two very distinct impressions. If one were to go by his reputation, they would probably have the image of an austere middle-aged man with more than enough experience to spare, as a decorated war hero of the Second Liberation War, a Vice Marshal in the Concordian Aerospace Fleet, Chairman, President, and CEO of S-V Industries, Director of the Antevorte Foundation, and probably more that she can’t bring herself to remember because they’re practically meaningless to her.
If one were to go off from his appearance alone, it wouldn’t be wrong to assume he worked in the entertainment industry (funny that, he had the philosophy that to succeed in life, one must always be an actor), and it most certainly would be understandable to not think he had a young teenaged daughter. He was still very young, not quite thirty-five yet, and he looked somewhere closer to being in his mid-late twenties, and had the air of an unattached bachelor (which was sort of true, if one disregarded his string of failed relationships).
Her father was an average height, 177 cm, which made Symphora wonder why she was still so short, and how she could steal some tall genes to at least crack 150 cm, and of a slender and lithe build. She resembled her father, apparently, since she couldn’t really see it beyond the fact they were both ghostly pale during winter, and they both had black epicanthic eyes. It was a bit uncomfortable whenever she would hear people at school call him handsome, or good-looking, even more so when she would stumble upon those comments online or while listening to broadcasts (some comments may have left her more than a little traumatized).
“Syma, I thought I told you to tell me when you got back.”
“It went to voicemail.”
“You could still leave a message, or a send a text.” His eyes trailed over to her hair. “Did you get that done today? It looks very nice.”
“Wait, what?” Symphora blinked, touching her hair. “It’s nice? That’s it?”
Her father raised a brow. “Did you want me to say it looks bad?”
“No, but aren’t you mad?”
“Why would I be mad? You’re old enough to make these kinds of choices for yourself.”
“I…never mind.” Huh, she really thought he’d get upset, or at least have a stern word or twelve for her. He was weirdly rigid and traditional at times, but lenient at others. He let her get several ear piercings, but rejected the idea of a navel piercing. He was fine with her dyeing her hair magenta, but had promptly taken her to get her hair cut when she let Januaria talk her into an asymmetrical hairdo last year. He always talked about how important it was for her to have pride in being a Sun with all the power and privilege that came with it, but had drilled things like cooking and cleaning into her for the sake of self-sufficiency.
“By the way, do you have a friend over?”
“Yeah.” She sat up, kicking her legs a bit in the process.
“You shouldn’t have guests over when we’re leaving soon.”
“Oh, he needed a ride to the party.”
“’He’?” Her father’s brows furrowed, and as luck would have it, Elliot walked out of the washroom.
The three of them just kind of stared at each other for a moment, before Elliot’s face lit up, and he bounded over like an overgrown puppy before doing a rather poorly-executed salute. “Vice Marshal Sun….! I…I…it’s an honour to meet you, sir!”
Her father forced a smile, returning the salute politely as he glanced over at her. “I know I said you should have fun at this age, but aren’t you a little young to have boys over in your room alone?”
“He’s just a friend,” she grumbled, more than a little mortified by the implication, but grateful Elliot was too starry-eyed to notice it.
“Just a friend.” He looked at her, then at Elliot, then back to her, rather skeptically, which rather annoyed her. If she were messing around with a guy, she wouldn’t be dumb enough to bring them home, let alone chance any potential meetings with her father.
Thankfully, he didn’t press the matter any further, though she suspected he would give her an earful later whenever they were truly in private again.
