"Why are your editing rates so high?"*
How the company thinks about it: It's "just" copyediting (although we do need it).
How I think about it:
I am a mortal human about to dedicate 2 full days of my mortal life to copyediting your marketing materials, from which I derive no enjoyment or fulfillment.
It will hurt my eyes and back and wrists and fingers, and I will need to pay for ongoing medical care for those things, to ensure that I don't, you know, go blind from squinting at your marketing materials.
My copyediting requires tools and books and subscription fees and ongoing training. This all costs money! Four figures per year, actually.
I additionally need a place to live! And food to eat! And a winter coat! So that I do not die. (I cannot copyedit your marketing materials if I am dead.)
So, in that light, my rates are not high at all. The cost of a mortal's time is unspeakably valuable.
*A question thus far asked literally only by multimillion dollar companies. The grad students and indie authors I work with are always like, "You deserve a living wage; let's see how we can make this work," and then pay promptly on time.

When I wrote this book I hadn't yet realized I'm likely autistic, and thus there's a lot of subtle autism rep that isn't fully fleshed out. But now I'm editing and I do know I'm likely autistic and I am 100% making it the main character's problem because therapy for me is expensive but writing her is cheap.

Never worry about how many times you need to rewrite before your writing is good. While it's best to avoid getting carried away with perfecting your work, it's just a reality that it takes lots of rewriting to get good. Not necessarily perfect, but good.
As Ernest Hemingway famously said, "I rewrote the ending of 'Farewell to Arms' 39 times before I was satisfied."

One of the fun parts about writing historical fiction is looking up the etymology of words to make sure I can use them in the time period I'm writing in.
Tonight I learned I can't mention farmers "gawking" at British POWs on the march from Yorktown because:
gawk (v.) "stare stupidly," 1785, American English, of uncertain origin.
My setting is 4 years too soon for regular usage.
Shoutout to Etymonline by the way.

I love writing, and I love the process of writing but it’s SO rude that the story doesn’t just come out perfectly the first time. Or the second time. Or the 249,469,726th time.

WIP Wednesday
“I’m hungry,” Chelsea whispers. She hisses softly when Mattie lays a hand on her shoulder. “I know,” Mattie says reassuringly, patting her shoulder. “You’d do anything for a bright soul, and believe me, these are some of the brightest. Such beautiful Talents… they are so strong and effervescent. But someday maybe you can eat chocolate instead.”
From my recent continued editing of Into the Split. I love my Shadows. I think they are very much my nod to my early vampire fandom.

Me: *politely informs publisher that my time spent editing their books must be compensated accurately*
What I feel the publisher's response will be: For the CRIME of wanting to LABOR in exchange for MONEY to buy GROCERIES—YOUR HOUSE IS NOW SURROUNDED COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP OOPS TOO LATE WE'VE SENT IN THE DARK WIZARDS AND THEIR DARK INFERNOOOOOO
Publisher's actual response: okey i will ask my manager have a nice weekend :)

Who let me decide to write a book where I have to track the actions of three separate POV characters down to the literal minute for the first half of the book? My brain is melting.

It was difficult writing my first, second, and third novels with how terrible my writing was. I felt a little better after I rewrote my third novel. Now as I write my fourth book after lots of practice, reading, and learning, I feel pretty darn good. I made this short to express the feeling. I made this using a template by McClungski on CapCut.
