WIP Wednesday
“I’m hungry,” Chelsea whispers. She hisses softly when Mattie lays a hand on her shoulder. “I know,” Mattie says reassuringly, patting her shoulder. “You’d do anything for a bright soul, and believe me, these are some of the brightest. Such beautiful Talents… they are so strong and effervescent. But someday maybe you can eat chocolate instead.”
From my recent continued editing of Into the Split. I love my Shadows. I think they are very much my nod to my early vampire fandom.

Okay, I actually want to elaborate on my theory why I think Wan will turn out to not have spread Prae's video on the wedding and also why I believe it was Pitch.
And ... I kinda wanna do so before the next episode airs and completely flips my theory. Just so I can come back and ratio myself or something lol
Now for one, I know, when you go through my blog, you will see that I just hate Pitch. And I mean that. I might be talking about the others in not so nice terms, and they do have faults, but I generally like them. Or relate to them. We see their sides of every string of the story, and we understand why they make their decisions. We've seen enough of Wanwan that we also immediately understand why she would exchange the videos. And even with all the bad decisions they make, even when a lot of the times they are a bit annoying, I like them.
That does not go for Pitch. Most of the "why" is personal reasons. But the rest is that his decision-making doesn't fit any motive that we get a chance to try and understand. The fact that we don't see enough of him and his story might tie into why I accuse him, but I want to say that I'll try to not let my hatred get in the way. 😅
First off, from a show perspective, which is a bit ridiculous (but hey, that's actually my second name so who can blame me?) I want to say it would just be an excellent move to have Pitch be the culprit and not Wan - or any of the other girls of the gang for that matter.
Throughout the show, we mostly got to see their perspectives, their stories, their pasts and plenty of their present. Mostly of the gang, of course, but we also have questionable parents. And while at least the parents aren't that far in the front, all of them make it seem like they are possible culprits. Prae's mother, Prae's friends and even Meen, whom Prae might have actually loved most. They all have been put in some form of bad light when looking at Prae's case, one way or another: Meen by probably been framed for the videos. Also for wanting to date Pitch, which Prae was in the way of. This one apparently also goes for May. She was also the one that immediately knew where to look: in Meen's purse. Wanwan is obviously now suspicious because of the thing with Win, but possibly other things too, since we know she had a lot to hide from her friends. Saras kinda falls out of the picture for me. But she doesn't give off culprit vibes, I'll be honest (just wait until the finals, I probably just jinxed her innocence). Even Phu was framed as a possible suspect, but that one got solved really fast.
They are all suspects and when revealed it was any of them, nobody would be surprised. Disappointed, maybe. But we were given hints for every single one of them.
And here is where Pitch comes in. He hasn't been framed as a suspect, at all. He doesn't even have emotional outbursts when the topic of his dead sister comes up. Hell, Meen's face always does this thing when she just thinks about Prae for longer than a second (Thanks at Jan for being absolutely perfect btw) and Pitch is like... Idk. His sister died and a few days later he was shaming Meen for keeping a promise she made with her. One that he himself couldn't even wait to finally break. He doesn't even put much effort into choosing which one of his deceased sister's friends he wants to start dating. Which I would have been ready to accept as a coping mechanism, but with everything else; The way he doesn't even seem to care.
With which I mean this: I mentioned this in another post as well, but the way he always backs out of any talk about Prae or doesn't participate, speaks books to me. He doesn't speak in favor of Meen once. He also never spoke in favor of his sister. He tried to calm his mother, but he did not say that Prae had done nothing wrong, hadn't defended her at all from the verbal abuse of their mother on Prae's wedding day. Who does that? What kinda brother is that? He didn't protect Prae at all, which was understandable if he was surprised, or it was a one time thing. But we now know it wasn't. For that, his efforts to keep the mother away from Prae were quite... Minimal. Why did he let her get even close enough to hit Prae? Weak-ass brother he is. Man, he doesn't even console her. Why did he go after the mother? Why was that more important than staying behind and making sure his sister knew immediately that he didn't think of her as a worthless slut? And we can only assume he never did really console her before, either. He watched as his sister got hit and screamed at and just hid away. The only thing we ever see him do is send Meen to console her. Which is a good thing! Really! But his obsession with Meen is another thing.
It is first apparent in the way he focuses only on her, even at the funeral. It really looked like that was the time he chose to try and reconcile with her. What an opportunist. Obviously, he did date other girls. The first time we see him, he is clinging to a nameless woman we never see again. I assume she was there to help him fulfil his plan and exchange the videos. He would know the flower arrangements, he would have access to the suit the bridesmaids are in. He just needed a girl to play the role.
Then why did he put the blame on Meen? To isolate her. To make sure, her friends would leave her, and she would be alone and desperate. Pitch is probably just like his mother and sister, a narcissist. And probably wants Meen all to himself and her to depend on him. Which would also explain why he is now so angry at her for what the mother revealed. Would a normal person really be angry, years later, when someone made a bad decision as a student? One that helped her out in a very difficult situation that had so far no other solution? Would you blame her for escaping the mother's resentment at that age? The same resentment she is now knowingly walking into, risking having that mother at her neck again. Which is a risk Meen took when she accepted dating Pitch again. Of course, you would still blame her for that - if you're a narcissist and see this as the ultimate betrayal towards your character. Even if he isn't the culprit behind the video swap. It makes him a really unlikable character to me, I suppose I cannot turn that distaste towards him off 😅
As for another motive, apart from Prae cockblocking him and being involved in the death of one of his girlfriends. I assume he also blames her for whatever is wrong with their mother. After all, it was always Prae being scolded and not acting perfect enough to please their mother. This one is the most far-fetched part of my theory. But I can easily picture this scenario in-between the rest.
All of this, I see that, is very far-fetched and not at all valid evidence. But let's just say it is revealed in the end that it was Pitch, wouldn't we all go back, look at these points and go "yeah, okay, that makes sense! Even if it wasn't made obvious."
And yeah, also. I hate him. 🤷
I am sorry for being so ineloquent btw, I'm just really bad at writing thoughts out. However if you still read until this part, I thank you so much for your attention and patience 🙏🏼💗
Just watch the next episode release, and it was simply Wan. And I'm just sitting on this hella long explanation simply because I don't like a character. 😂😂

Vietnam Relied on Environmentalists to Secure Billions. Then It Jailed Them.
The government is preparing to present its energy transition plan at the U.N. climate talks as it intensifies a crackdown on environmental advocates.
Tumblr media
(Solar panels at the Sao Mai power plant in An Giang Province, Vietnam, last year. The country has been awarded $15.5 billion in grants and loans in exchange for a commitment to renewable energy)
By Sui-Lee Wee Nov. 28, 2023, 5:01 a.m. ET
When Vietnam was awarded a multibillion-dollar deal by a group of nine wealthy nations last year to work on reducing its use of coal, it agreed to regularly consult with nongovernmental organizations.
Instead, the government has arrested several prominent environmentalists from those organizations who shaped policies that helped secure the funding, prompting concerns over sending money to countries that have violated human rights.
As the country prepares to announce how it will spend the money at the United Nations climate talks that begin on Thursday, activists are saying that Vietnamese officials need to be held accountable for what they are calling a harsh crackdown against those who speak out about the country’s environmental woes.
Ngo Thi To Nhien, the director of an energy think tank, was the sixth environmental campaigner to be detained in the past two years.
She had met with officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in March to discuss a plan for the climate deal, the Just Energy Transition Partnership, an effort among the United States, Japan and other developed countries to persuade developing economies to abandon coal. The nine nations had announced in December that Vietnam would receive $15.5 billion in grants and loans in exchange for a commitment to renewable energy.
Ms. Nhien, 48, never got the chance to see Vietnam present the plan. She was arrested in September and remains in a detention center on a charge of “appropriating documents of agencies and organizations.”
The other five who were detained were charged with tax evasion, which rights groups say are trumped-up accusations in response to their advocacy. Four were tried in closed hearings that lasted less than a day each, and given jail time, punishments more severe than the norm. While two activists have since been released, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights said in September that the “prosecutions and the arbitrary application of restrictive legislation are having a chilling effect” on environmentalists in Vietnam.
Activists and academics say that Vietnam appears to be emboldened by its growing importance to the West and has taken the opportunity to clamp down, knowing there will be few repercussions. The country has presented itself as an increasingly important geopolitical player, and one of the few Southeast Asian nations that has publicly pushed back against China. President Biden visited Vietnam in September, elevating ties to a new strategic relationship that he said would “be a force for prosperity and security in one of the most consequential regions in the world.”
Tumblr media
(President Biden and Nguyen Phu Trong, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, at a welcome ceremony in Hanoi in September)
“We’re dealing with a juggernaut,” said Phil Robertson, the deputy director of Human Rights Watch’s Asia division. “They have run the table on the international community, and they’re continuing to do so.”
He pointed to Vietnam’s invitation to the Group of 7 summit this year, its inclusion on the Human Rights Council and now the funding from the Just Energy Transition Partnership, despite the country’s troubling human rights record.
Since 2016, when Nguyen Phu Trong, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was re-elected, the space for civil society has shrunk immensely. The country has the second-highest number of political prisoners in Southeast Asia, with more than 160 people currently detained for exercising their basic rights, according to Human Rights Watch.
The authorities in Vietnam have long persecuted people who are viewed as overt threats to one-party rule. But Mr. Trong’s administration has gone much further, targeting people who were previously given some room to operate.
Vietnam rejects any suggestions that the prosecutions are politically motivated. Pham Thu Hang, a spokeswoman for the Vietnamese foreign ministry, said last month that the environmentalists’ cases were “investigated, prosecuted and tried in accordance with the provisions of Vietnam law.”
Tumblr media
(An electric vehicle charging station in a Hanoi parking garage. Nine wealthy nations announced in December that Vietnam would be the recipient of funding to facilitate its energy transition)
All six ran organizations that were outspoken about the country's environmental problems. That advocacy ultimately put them on a collision course with the Communist Party.
Their detentions are a signal that the government wants the energy transition to be carried out on its own terms and not on the advice of groups they have long deemed suspicious, said Nguyen Khac Giang, a visiting fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, a research organization in Singapore.
On the day Ms. Nhien was detained, Nhan Dan, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, criticized foreign donors who had funded policy research, saying they had directed groups to publish reports with “one-sided, negative content, tarnishing the situation of the country and the people of Vietnam.”
Vietnam, a manufacturing powerhouse that is home to nearly 99.5 million people, is the ninth-largest coal consumer globally. In 2021, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh vowed that the country would phase out coal consumption by 2040.

The Just Energy Transition Partnership was first awarded to South Africa in 2021 as part of an effort by wealthy countries to address longstanding inequities in tackling climate change. Activists now see Vietnam as a litmus test for future agreements. Should other repressive governments be given billions of dollars? Should there be specific requirements for countries that receive funding but have poor human rights records?
Several countries behind the climate deal have expressed concern about the detentions in Vietnam, but rights groups say those nations need to predicate their financial support on the release of the environmentalists or a pledge from the government that there will not be additional arrests. So far, the countries have been unwilling to do so, said Ben Swanton, a director at The 88 Project, a U.S.-based nonprofit that focuses on human rights issues in Vietnam.
Tumblr media
(Dang Dinh Bach, 45, ran a law and policy research center before he was arrested in 2021.)
In one of the harshest penalties in Vietnam for someone convicted of tax evasion, Dang Dinh Bach, 45, was given a five-year sentence in January 2022. He ran a law and sustainable development policy research center that provided legal aid to communities.
Mr. Bach refused to plead guilty. Tran Phuong Thao, his wife, said that she was not allowed to attend his trial and that he has been assaulted in prison by police officers.
“People like my husband have made great efforts to support the government and give suggestions on energy transition policies,” Ms. Thao said.
The arrest of Ms. Nhien, the think tank director, was particularly unusual because she was not a government critic. She led the Vietnam Initiative for Energy Transition Social Enterprise, the first group in the country to specialize in energy transition.
A former civil servant, Ms. Nhien had worked as a consultant at the World Bank and the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership, a program managed by a U.N. infrastructure agency. She championed policymaking based on scientific evidence and was invited in May to speak to the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam. In June 2020, she organized a workshop on integrating renewable energy sources into the country’s grid, presenting information from the state electricity utility.
That was enough to make her a target. On Sept. 15, four days after Mr. Biden left Vietnam, she was detained. The Ministry of Public Security pointed to the workshop as evidence of her “appropriating internal documents.”
Two weeks later, a court in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced Hoang Thi Minh Hong, 51, one of Vietnam’s best-known environmentalists, to three years in prison for tax evasion.
Tumblr media
(Hoang Thi Minh Hong, one of Vietnam’s best-known environmentalists, was sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion)
Ms. Hong’s husband, Hoang Vinh Nam, called his wife’s trial a sham and said the tax department did not send anyone to testify against her. When her peers started being arrested two years ago, Ms. Hong called the tax bureau to ask whether she owed anything and was assured that she did not, he said.
In December, Ms. Hong decided to shut down her environmental nonprofit, citing government pressures. She was arrested in May.

My suggestions for the real names of the Characters from Danganronpa F: Shattered Hope.
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome, brothers, sisters and non-binary comrades. I was bored, so I decided to share something I came up with some time ago. Namely, what the cast's real names are, in my opinion.
It's for fun.
Enigma - Dylan Thompson: I can't really justify my choice. I just think that the name Dylan suits both Enigma and the protagonist. Additionally, when I imagine that the others call him Dylan, I immediately label him with that name.
Cancel - Mary Brétan: I know Cancel, she said at free events that she was from California. However, seeing her clothes and her long, night-black hair, I am not convinced that this girl does not have Romanian roots.
Yaxi - Ivory Espadera: When I hear this name, I also hear its strength. A strong name for a strong woman warrior.
Grisp - Grant: I was thinking about the name Grispa and I think he would probably have a crazier, more unusual name. But the name Grant suits me too. When I heard the name Grant, the first thing I thought of was a tall and well-built man. Moreover, it is a distinctive name with a calm tone. Good name for Grisp.
Scarlet - Adreinne Phu: Sounds elegant to me. Therefore, for the beautiful, motherly figure of this killer game, it is absolutely perfect in my opinion.
Cross - Albert River: When I was thinking about a name for Cross, for some strange reason my mind went to the game "The Witcher". I kept thinking of something that had a "serious" or "intelligent" connotation to it. And so, thinking about the name and random, reimagined scenes from "The Witcher", the name Albert River came up, and honestly. I just really like it.
Moraiteru - Brooke Sirano: I'm not sure how I came to this conclusion. I have the impression that Mora has some family in Spain.
Corza - Trevor Talde: His name is Trevor, like Enigma's, his name is Dylan. God, why am I so stubborn about these two names?
Pocket - Paul Green: I love Poket, and its greatest asset is its voice actor, who I think does a great job. That's why I named him "Green". When I was a child, I heard many times from my mother that the color green was calming. Pocket Voice is my green color.
Rock - Gregory Stone: Do you get it? Because he's a Geologist whose last name is "Stone." I'm comical. Quite seriously. Rock's love of verbal jokes influenced my decision. After all, Rock was delighted to remember his name. (At least that's what I think)
Rox - Elena Wright: A beautiful name for a beautiful journalist. I like the name "Elena" so much, so I immediately knew what name sounded perfect for Rox. Besides, I think you'll agree that Rox would be like a female version of Phoenix, screaming "Objection" throughout the trial room.
Twin - Kenneth Flash: Kenneth will always be known to me as an archetypal character who is cheerful, full of life and cares for the wound. Yes! Kenneth is his name, I'm even more insistent than with Corza and Enigma. The name Flash comes from the fact that Twin captured my heart at flash speed.
Rissi - Kaitlyn Hart: Sounds cute and innocent to me. It accurately captures the wonderful person Rissi is.
Anon - Zack Smitch: When I thought about it a bit and looked at his nickname, the fact that it is currently targeted, that Anon will not have any talent and his behavior, I associated him with an ordinary surname. However, I gave the name more expressive, because the aura of an ordinary Anon raises some suspicions.
What do you think about this ? Have you had any thoughts on what the real names of our favorite fourteen Ultimats might be?
Have a nice day/night

I have seen your last post about how writing a fight scene s similar to writing a sex scene. Where would I be able to read some of your stuff?
Hey, hi! Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Between day job and last weekend's winter storm it has been a HELL of a week. Phew.
If you're looking for anything of mine to read, I have a lot online, and some published! Hopefully some of it will appeal.
I have a serialized set of novels available here on Tumblr at @welcometophu -- there is a masterlist of links available for it. Currently there are 7 (long) novels serialized, and over 20 short stories of varying length. Everything on the blog tops out at about an R rating--anything more explicit is on AO3 (and linked from that masterlist of links).
The first of the Twinned trilogy of those serialized novels has been collected, edited, and is published and available from @duckprintspress via their web store. They also have ebook editions of some of the PHU short stories, some new ones written for them, and I am part of two of their anthologies--I write as Tris Lawrence.
I have a bibliography on my professional website with links to other short stories, and that will be updated when the rest of the Twinned trilogy is Kickstarted, and when the first book of my new Seven Lakes series is independently published this spring/summer (waiting on art, watch this blog for more announcements!).
And of course, if you read fanfic on AO3, I am not currently writing fanfic due to time constraints, but I do have 714 existing posted works on my account. Please note: my work is locked to authenticated users only.

The Meaning of Home Chapter 37

[ Previous | First | Next ]
It’s been a chaotic week since Pawel returned from the Dreamscape. He’s spent a large part of it back in Unity, making sure that his and Conor’s life has been packed into boxes. He negotiated with Anita for everything she wanted to keep in the house, and had Rowan draw up an official rental agreement. As much as her younger daughter loved Valiant, this house is convenient and lets them all settle in while searching for something permanent.
Pawel is pretty sure that if he has to, he’ll be able to rent it out when Anita eventually finds her own place. There’s always a market near the college, particularly when adjunct faculty come and go over the years.
He made it back to Leo and Colt’s so that he could meet up with Lucy and Rowan when they came down to help Emma’s parents re-establish themselves. Then he spent an entire day helping pack that house, so that by Thursday night everyone is living out of suitcases and eating take-out off of paper plates with plasticware. The move starts early on Saturday morning, and no one wants to be still packing while they’re loading the moving truck.
Saturday is going to be chaos enough. They have plenty of help arranged, but there are a lot of people involved. More, now that it’s been decided that Emma’s parents will be taking the second house. Their community has officially grown by an entire family.
Which means Pawel is moving into the main house with Colt and Leo. He’s known this for a while, but having the other house completely unavailable makes it more… real.
The one thing he hasn’t managed to do in the past week is get over to his father’s place to pack up the few items he has there, along with the contents of Conor’s room. So Friday he heads over mid-morning, figuring that he’ll get that done while his father’s at work. It’s early enough that he should still be on time for the closing at two, in the lawyer’s office downtown.
There’s a car on the street when he pulls in, visiting someone next door, he assumes. He unlocks the door with his own key, only registering the country music playing loudly after he pulls the door open. There’s a wordless shout and the music cuts off; Pawel drops his keys in response, looking into the kitchen. A woman stands there, her dark hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, tendrils escaped around her face as if she hasn’t managed to brush it yet this morning. She’s tall, with soft features and lines in her face, and has one hand pressed to her chest, over a t-shirt that Pawel knows belongs to his dad.
“You scared me,” she says. “John didn’t say you were coming over today.”
Pawel blinks, his mind sorting through data quickly. He knows who she has to be, even if they haven’t met. He should be able to come up with her name. “Daisy,” he says, latching onto it like a lifeline. “You’re my dad’s—” He stumbles, because girlfriend sounds so high school, but he can’t think of a different term. Are Leo and Colt his boyfriends? No, that’s not the point right now; he needs to deal with the person in front of him.
“Girlfriend.” She holds her hand out as she approaches him. “Yes, that’s me. We should’ve met before now, but your father seemed to think you’ve got something against him dating.” Her smile is pleasant. Friendly and open. When Pawel clasps her hand, she offers a firm, quick shake. For a moment he thinks she’s going to hug him, then she hesitates and the moment passes as she withdraws her hand.
This is awkward.
“I don’t,” he says. “Have anything against him dating. I’ve assumed he has. It’s been a long time since Mom died, and—” Pawel winces, because he’s sure this isn’t coming out right. “I just don’t want to think about him having sex, and Dad overshares. So we’ve had a don’t ask, don’t tell policy for a long, long time. Which was good, because it meant he didn’t ask about the specific details of my life when I was doing things he probably didn’t approve of. Like everything in high school, and getting my not-girlfriend pregnant in college.” He glances at the door, relieved when that isn’t somehow a cue for Chelsea to walk in. “But yeah. It also means I didn’t know he was dating until I came home this summer. I take it this has been…?”
“Five years now,” Daisy says with a small smile. “At least if you ask me. He’ll tell you it’s been maybe nine months, possibly as much as a year. He thinks we started dating a year ago September, at the fall picnic.”
“How does that work?” Pawel closes the door carefully. “Also, if you’d like to—” He gestures at her bare legs. “I can wait while you get dressed. Are you…?”
“Living here? No, not really. Not yet.” Daisy walks into the kitchen, sliding eggs from a pan onto a plate and taking it with her to sit on the couch. “I’m retired, and I do have my own place, but sometimes it’s just nice to wake up here with him. I’m sure you know how that feels.” She smiles at him, and Pawel flushes, because yes, he does. Intimately. And that just makes him think—
Academically he knows that sex is a thing and that other people have it. Obviously. He can’t explain why he’s so hung up on not knowing that his own father is obviously happy and healthy and having a great time—no, he tried. He’s not thinking about that.
“I’m older than John—not that it means much at our age,” Daisy continues. “It just means I’ve been able to retire, between my own savings and the remains of my husband’s life insurance money.” Her expression is soft when she glances up. “I know what it’s like to be alone. It’s been a good thirty years for me, since before you were born. This relationship with John has been like a whole new start.”
Pawel sits at the other end of the couch. “How have you been together five years, if he thinks…?”
She laughs softly. “Well, we’ve known each other a good deal longer than that. I used to be a cop in his precinct. I started after my Sammy passed, actually. We didn’t have any kids. I wanted to do something good for the world, so I thought police work might be that. I retired six years ago, after twenty-five years of service. When they took me out for a drink to celebrate, I asked your father if he’d like to get dinner, or see a movie.” She pauses long enough to eat, gesturing with her fork when she speaks again. “We got to be friends. More, sometimes, when we felt like it. So I guess in my head things changed about when I realized that the only old fool I was fooling around with was him.”
“And he took a little longer to catch on?”
The look Daisy gives him is sharp, her smile wide. “Leo Papa tells me that the Szczek men are just a bit oblivious when it comes to emotional entanglements.”
Pawel makes a face. “We come around eventually.”
“At least you didn’t take years.” Daisy looks at him. “They’re good men, with a good family. I think it makes your father happy to see you with them. I’ve heard about your ex, too. Sounds as if things are complicated.”
“In a good way,” Pawel says. Yes, it’s taken him a while to get here, but he thinks he likes where he is. With Leo and Colt. With Chelsea wandering in and out at inopportune times. “It might still take some getting used to, but it’s worth it. We move into the new place tomorrow. Dad said he’d be helping.”
“I’ll come with.” Daisy answers the question he doesn’t ask. “I think John’s enjoying having a few extra grandchildren around. I get the feeling there will be more.”
The way she says it, Pawel isn’t sure if it’s an observation of the family he’s joining, or something more. “Are you prescient?”
“Talented? No.” She shakes her head. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Talent in my family—it’d explain a few things about my cousins—but as far as I know I’m not. Your mother though—I could almost see the way she glowed. You’ve got the same look about you.”
Wait. “You knew my mother?”
“Weren’t you listening?” Daisy snorts softly. “I joined the force before you were born, Pawel. I remember when she was pregnant with you. The way John would spoil her, and the way she’d light up the room when she walked in. I remember Sylvia well.” Her gaze narrows, mouth turned up at the corners in an impish smile. “I could tell you stories. Things you probably don’t remember, from when you were young. Things your father might still find too painful to talk about.”
Pawel gets the feeling it’s a bribe, but he doesn’t care. “I’d love it if you’d talk to Conor about her, too,” he says quietly. “I’ve told him everything I can, but I was twelve when she died. My memories are fractured sometimes. I think it’s like the whole world ended then, and I started fresh as a new person. Death can do that to you.”
“Imagine how Conor felt when you disappeared,” Daisy says solemnly. “Or how John felt, either time. Even knowing you were coming back this time, there’s still that uncertainty. He didn’t sleep well while you were gone.”
And that was definitely Pawel’s fault. “I’m sorry.” He pauses to let the apology have the weight it needs. “It was worth it, in the end. Emma has her parents back, and I think I’ve learned something more about my mother, and about how magic—Talent—works. It’s never-ending. I think I’ll be on my death bed someday and I won’t have learned everything there is to know. Every day seems to bring something new.”
“That’s how the world is.” She leans in, expression still serious. “If you ever think you know everything, you’re wrong.” Her smile blooms suddenly then; Pawel feels the mood shift in the room. “I’m glad to have finally met you properly as an adult, Pawel. Your son is a good kid. You’ve done well with him. Smart, polite. Gets his work done.”
“Are we talking about the same kid?”
“They always behave better for someone else. And that new family of yours. Of course, I’ve known them both before now. Good men,” she says. “I approve.”
“I’m still a little surprised at how well Dad—and you—are taking the idea that I’m in a relationship with two men.” It’s getting easier to say it so plainly. It’s also getting easier to accept it. They’re closing on a house today—well, Leo and Colt are, but Pawel’s moving in with them tomorrow. They are joining their families.
“I’m old, but not dead. I see how attractive they are.” Daisy winks, and Pawel feels the heat in his cheeks. “Your father respects them. I actually remember you dating them years ago. The things your father worried about… he knew more than you thought.”
Pawel covers his face with one hand. “Great. Remember: that’s why we had a don’t ask, don’t tell policy. It was better if we pretended that he didn’t know.”
“I understand. Look. It’s clear they both care about you deeply, and that you care about them and their children in return,” Daisy says. “I lived through the sixties. All these ideas that young people think are new, and that adults can’t understand—the adults that say they can’t get it don’t want to understand. It’s willful ignorance. Polyamory has existed for far longer than just your generation. It might not be my cup of tea, but I can see when it’s a good thing for someone else.”
“I didn’t think it was going to be my thing, either,” Pawel admits. “But I never stopped thinking about them. They were the ones that got away.”
“And now you’ve reeled them back in.” Daisy pats his knee. “Good for you.” She stands up, taking her plate with her. “I’m just going to go clean up in the kitchen. You came here to pack, didn’t you? Why don’t you get together whatever boxes you need, and when you’re done, I’ll help you carry them out to the car. The guest room still looks like Conor lives here, and it seems like Emma’s left a lot of her stuff here as well. Might take a couple of trips.”
“I was actually just going to pack what I could now, and have Leo swing by with the minivan later,” Pawel admits. “There’s no way everything’s fitting in my car. You go on and do whatever you were going to do this morning. I’ll grab the boxes from my car and get started. And….” He feels like no matter what he says, it won’t be enough. “Thank you for being here. My father seems happy, and so do you, and that’s a good thing. I’ll try to be more involved. Although I think we’ll both be glad if I’m not sleeping on his couch anymore.”
“We’ll definitely all be glad of that,” Daisy agrees. “Go on now and get everything done. I’ll come help, if you’d like.”
It’s putting things in boxes. It’s the same thing he’s done all week, back in Unity. But at the same time… this could be good. “On one condition,” he says. “You tell me stories. Not about my dad, or about my mom, either. Tell me more about you. I’d like to get caught up on everything I’ve missed.”
Her laugh is loud and bright. “I think we can do that, although maybe not quite everything. We’ll let your dad and me keep a few secrets.”
Yeah, Dad has definitely found his match in her. “I’m looking forward to getting to know you,” he says. Maybe there are pictures somewhere, something with Daisy in the background, from when Pawel was younger and going to those departmental picnics. Something to help him place her in the life that existed before Pawel moved to Unity. Apparently she’s been here a long time. Pawel should make an effort to connect with what he’s missed.
