ART THREAD
I have had the very great pleasure of commissioning some beautiful art to celebrate the release of my new novel Nine-Tenths. I'm going to share them all in this thread (and hopefully add to it if I'm lucky enough to be graced with more) so you can appreciate the talent of these incredible artists.
Tumblr media
by Christopher Winkelaar
Nine-Tenths is set in a world where all the nobility in Europe are homo draconis - shape-shifting dragons who have the ability to take human form. Every culture in the world have dragons living among the humans, but the European and Asian nations are the only ones where dragons were historically elevated to the roles of monarchs, nobles, and emperors.
In a world where the American Colonies rejected British rule, this meant they were also rejecting draconic protection--and so while they won their Independence in 1793, they were soundly trounced in the War of 1812, losing all of New England, including New York State, to the British. They were absorbed into the Canadas, except for New York City, which was reclaimed by the Dutch and re-renamed New Amsterdam.
The Canadian colonies expanded west, as they historically did in our world, through a series of broken treaties with the Indigenous peoples of the continent, and the reprehensible colonialist practices which put the settlers in power today. It also means they were able to expand further south, without the Americans to bump up against.
This also meant that the Americans were unable to expand as far south and west as in our world, coming up against Indigenous dragon-protected lands, such as the Oniagara, or Aztec and Incan empires, which grew further north after Spanish contact, and flourished.
Unlike in the current version of Canada, the land was legislatively divided into much smaller provinces than currently exist, each overseen by a hereditary draconic Lieutenant Governor, who report to the draconic Governor of the Canadas, who in turn reports to the House of Lords in England (also dragons). Each province is divided into Duchies, Earldoms, and Marquessates, presided over by a noble dragon family.
As dragons are long-lived, the current Queen of England is Elizabeth (the first one). As she has not yet passed, the Kingdom of Scotland as yet remains separate from England. Ireland too is independent, the Irish dragons having beaten back the English ones. However, Wales remains a satellite colony of England, as the betrayal which brought about it's subjugation and the trickery around the hereditary title "Prince of Wales" still occurred. (This an important plot point).
Tumblr media
by @seancefemme
This is the first piece of art I commissioned for the novel, and you'll note it's now become the cover art!
Meet the heroes of our tale: barista and disaster bi Colin Levesque, stuck in the middle of his quarter-life crisis and crushing on his cafe regular, Welsh dragon Dav, the Marquis of Niagara (though of course, Colin doesn't know he's the Marquis, and thinks Dav is just some minor noble with nothing better to do all day than hang out and read).
Tumblr media
by @ibrithir-was-here
Colin works at Beanevolence, an indie cafe in downtown St. Catharine's, in the province of Upper Canada (Southern Ontario in our world). It's owned by his bestie Hadi, and he was only supposed to be a barista until he'd graduated. But now he has his Sustainable Tourism degree, and no clue what to do next. He feels completely stuck. Luckily he has Dav to distract him.
Except that one day Dav distracts him too well, which results in a kitchen fire. As an apology for the inferno, and to help the cafe get back on it's feet while the repairs are under way, Dav volunteers as the new bean roaster, creating incredible and (and ultimately social-media viral) coffee roasts with his fire-breath.
Tumblr media
by @ibrithir-was-here
Colin and Dav start a flirtation at work.
Which leads to...
Tumblr media
by @teejaystumbles
Luxurious dates and late-night smoochies.
Tumblr media
by @pinkpiggy93
Which also goes a little bit viral. See, it turns out that the Marquis of Niagara usually keeps a low profile, and his sudden romance with a human has the gossip rags and tabloids all in a tizzy.
But more than that, it puts Dav under the scrutiny of Francis Simcoe. He's the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, a dragon with a hate-on for Dav, and the perfect ammunition to ruin his happiness.
Because, you see, it's against dragonic rules for dragons to be seen to be laboring in service of humans... and Dav's new gig at Beanevolence is about to--forgive the pun--land him in hot water.

Worldbuilding is one of the most enjoyable aspects of genre writing, but it can also be quite daunting. Luckily J.M. Frey, author and giver of nearly ten years worth of talks on the subject, is releasing a new book to help!
Check out the book on Jess' author site Architect Breaks Down “Bridgerton” Mansions | Architectural Digest New Edge Sword & Sorcery Mailing List, FB, Twitter, IG, and the site itself.

an ask game for writers to procrastinate working on your WIP(s)
Thanks for tagging me @wellbelesbian! Better late than never, eh?
1. 🦈Tell us the name of your/ one of your WIP(s):
Just Some Guy and Ljubili se. Those are my "active" WIPs now, because if I had to list all of them... oh boy. Although I'm working on Just Some Guy more.
2. 🍄Describe your WIP/one of your WIP(s) in the format of “___ + ___ =___”
Outsider POV + Chosen One shit = disinterest
Queer journey + long distance = chaos (I think???)
3. 🌍What tags or warnings will one of your WIP(s) need if you intend to share it?
For these two, none. I know Matt is MCD, but it stands for Matt Christopher Davis.
4. 🧭An alternative title to one of your WIP(s)?
I don't really have alternative titles, but they do have nicknames. I call Just Some Guy "MCD" because it's just funny to me and Ljubili se "Klaine in Ljubljana 2" which is ridiculous cause they're no longer in Ljubljana.
5. ⚠️Which WIP your most likely to finish or update next?
Just Some Guy. I only need to finish one more chapter and I've been updating it weekly.
6. 💾What is your document of your WIP/ a WIP called? (not the stories actual title but what you’ve saved it as)
Ljubili se is in "drabbles and oneshots" and Just Some Guy in "Non-glee drabbles and oneshots" because I am chaotic and put all my writing in those two docs, unless something becomes too big, then it gets its own doc.
7. 🖍Post Any sentence(s) from your WIP.
I’ve heard stories of physical fights between them, but I kind of don’t care. Just let me play chess in peace. If they want to knock each other’s brains out, be my guest. One time I walked to class and Simon almost shoved Baz against the wall in anger, and I just passed them. I think more students are kind of used to their escalations. So, no, I don’t care. Arnold says it’s rude of me to think that way, but it’s not out of malice. It’s out of disinterest. “Really, I don’t get politics,” I sigh.
8. ♻️A scrapped idea for your current WIP.
I scrapped two scenes in Just Some Guy. The whole premise of the fic is that Matt honestly doesn't care that much about what the fuck is going in with Simon Snow and entourage. Originally, the kidnapping of the Mage in the 6th year had an entire scene where he, Leslie and John discuss it. And in the 8th year, there was an entire scene where Matt and his dad learn about the Mage's death, because once again, John and Leslie show up to discuss it. But in the end, I realised that Matt just... doesn't care. And those two scenes therefore felt very forced and it dragged the chapters down. The snippets aren't bad. They're just woefully unnecessary. I was like "I need Matt to acknowledge this" and I realised I didn't. I put both of them under the cut at the end of this post.
Hey, it ain't spoilers, cause everyone who's read Carry On knows what happens to good ole Davy.
9. 🤔What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?
Unfortunately for me, my mind's already started planning for this year's Klaine Advent/December Fanworks Challenge. Why is this unfortunate? Well, I still have to finish the 2023 one, Ljubili se.
But this idea is pretty neat. It's inspired by J.M. Frey's Accidental Turn series. That's all I'm sayin.
10. 🤡How many WIPS are you actively working on?
Actively, 2. Maybe 3, since bamboo ceiling is rotating in my brain. Don't ask me about the others in my WIP Hospital.
11. 🛠Is there a scene or anything in the WIP you are struggling with right now?
I AM FUCKING STUCK ON LJUBILI SE BECAUSE JUST LIKE LJUBIM TE I JUST FIND KURT'S POV HARDER/LESS INTERESTING TO WRITE.
12. ❤️Not a question, just a second Kudos to send.
Kudos back!
I think this post has been passed around in the Snowbaz fandom, so I am passing it to the Gleeks: @thnxforknowingme @caramelcoffeeaddict @coffeegleek @quizasvivamos @bitbybitwrites @shame-is-a-wasted-emotion @rockitmans @special-bc-ur-part-of-it and whoever else!
Year 6: Mage's kidnapping
When I come home from Christmas break, something is definitely up.
“Did I miss anything?” I whisper to Leslie. We’re walking towards the Dining Hall to meet up with the others.
Leslie looks around.
“I heard this from John,” she leans in, “that the Mage got kidnapped over Christmas.”
“What?!” I exclaim.
“Shut it,” Leslie hisses. Some people are indeed staring at us. “The Coven is keeping it quiet at the Mage’s request. He cannot afford to look weak in front of the Old Families and the Dark Creatures.”
“Then how does John know?” I ask, but I think I already know the answer. John just knows stuff. And so far he’s always right. Maybe he’s a Seer, or something. Not that those are real, but damn, John is a strong contender.
And yes, Leslie tells me that John just knows.
Leslie and I enter the Dining Hall and John waves. Everyone’s already here. I look to Leslie to say something about it, but she’s already run to Sam to catch up. I shrug. Leslie can be mysterious as well.
I sit next to John and I inquire about the Mage’s disappearance.
“Yeah, Simon Snow saved him and all that jazz,” John says quietly.
“Shouldn’t the Mage be the one protecting him, not the other way around?”
“You’d think, huh?” John sighs.
I look around. I assume others know as well, but no one discusses it openly. Even the Old Family kids don’t taunt Simon Snow about his mentor allegedly being kidnapped.
“Why did you tell Leslie?” I ask.
“Because I knew she’d tell you.”
“Why is it important that I know?” I ask, “You know I don’t care about Chosen One stuff.”
I care more about the pudding that’s in front of me. Fuck yeah, pudding. Both my mum and my dad are decent cooks, but they have nothing on cook Pritchard.
John shrugs.
“I needed you to react to it for story reasons,” he says.
“… Okay,” I say and I scoop some pudding on my plate, “Did it work?”
John nods with a smile.
“Yes, it did.”
--
Year 8: Mage's death
“Okay, so, the Humdrum attacked the Pitch Manor, where Simon Snow so happened to be. The day after, it attacks Watford. Simon and the Mage are there. Simon defeats the Humdrum and lost his magic. He kills the Mage. Is that… all?”
“In a nutshell,” Leslie says.
“Why would Simon Snow kill the Mage?” my dad wonders out loud. That is indeed the most surprising part, not even the fact that the Mage killed Ebb, the goatherd.
“The investigation is still in its beginning phase,” John says, “But it sounds like the Mage maybe wasn’t a good man after all.”
“Huh,” my dad says. That’s all. But it summarises it perfectly. Look, my dad and I are just some guys. We don’t have big opinions on the status quo, so we never really questioned how things are.
“So, what now?” I ask.
“There will be an inquiry into the Mage’s death,” Leslie explains, “Mitali Bunce is interim headmistress. Rumour has it that Simon Snow’s magic hasn’t returned, so who knows if he’ll come back to school.”
Damn.
This dude just saved the world, and he has to think about school?
I mean, I do too, but I am no Chosen One.
Bruh, it must suck to be Simon Snow

Hello There!
Hiiiiiiiiiii :)
After a long LONG break, I am posting something again, this is very exciting. Life has been incredibly hectic since the year started and I've barely had time to live, much less read, so booklr took several steps back in my priorities list... My life is still very much tornado-like and regular posting is definitely not planned yet, but it feels good to at least say a little something. Thank you to everyone who got in touch with me during my absence -I missed you a lot!
It's June 1st, so as tradition, the Forgotten YA Gems' Summer Reading Bingo Challenge is back, fourth edition! Absolutely nothing can impede me from taking part in it, so even if I'm choosing the smallest card instead of my usual big one, the game's on and I wanted to share it with everyone.
(If you don't know what I'm talking about link here).
Tumblr media
The first book I'm starting with is The Untold Tale, by J.M. Frey, for the indie/small press square. It's been on my TBR for years, so it's about time I got round to it...
But enough about me! How is everyone! What are you reading? What joyful news do you have? Please do share with me everything I might have missed!
Hopefully back soon,
Andrea xx

NINE-TENTHS
Twenty-four is one year too young for a quarter-life crisis, but hey, Colin's always been an overachiever. He's got a degree in Sustainable Tourism, which his family says he's wasting as a barista, an annoying anxiety disorder, and no freaking idea what to do with his life.
The only thing going his way is the cute coffee shop regular, a homo draconis named Dav (who, in his humanshape, is a total hottie.) Still, it'd be easier if Dav didn't have a habit of accidentally setting things on fire when he's startled. Like the café kitchen.
When Dav breaks draconic taboo and volunteers as a replacement bean-roaster to apologize for the inferno meet-ugly, sparks really fly. Everything's finally happening for Colin, until he learns that hooking up with Dav means that under dragon law, Colin is absorbed into Dav's hoard.
Possession may be nine-tenths of the law, but becoming his boyfriend's property does not make this whole identity crisis thing easier. Especially now that Colin must navigate politics, paparazzi, and legal questions about his personhood. Colin's still angling for his Happily Ever After, but the growing scrutiny on his relationship with Dav threatens their budding romance.
And if he's not careful, Colin's fight for agency may just destroy symbiotic human/dragon relationships worldwide.
🐉☕❤️
A sassy, queer, alternate universe romance from Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2011 author J.M. Frey. Wrapped in discussions of autonomy and colonialism, Nine-Tenths meets in the middle between Red, White & Royal Blue and the Temeraire series.
🐉☕❤️
Part One
There's this thing in stories called the "inciting incident".
And mine? It's a goddamn doozy.
It’s the part of the book, right at the start, where the lovers have their meet-cute, the farm boy leaves for the wider world, the Chosen One is attacked by her first evil monster, blah, blah, blah. You know what I mean. It's the place where everything opens up and you have no idea what you're in for—only that it'll be exciting.
I know all about Inciting Incidents because I was going to be a writer.
No, I thought I was going to be a writer. Historical romance, that’s my jam. Dukes, rakes, windblown-gowns, dropped handkerchiefs, cliffside confessions—I am a slut for that stuff. Forget real history (totally flunked ‘We’re-Feeding-You-Colonialist-Narratives-Disguised-As-Education’ 101). Give me made-up kingdoms and far-flung pirates. Give me the fantasy of a happily ever after that lasts beyond ‘the end’. Give coffee and stories, and I am a content boy.
But right before he got sick, in the summer between my first and second year of university, my Dad and I had a serious talk about writing. How much work it is. How long it takes to start paying off. Backup plans.
And then… after, I thought, well, he wasn’t wrong. If life was going to be pointlessly, stupidly, cruelly short, then I should spend my time trying to do something good, right? I switched majors. Science makes sense. Science is logical. Science creates vaccines and saves lives. Science can bring species back from the brink of extinction. Science doesn’t break your heart.
All of this is to say that I can—with complete and utter certainty—point to the exact moment when my life became a trash fire. It was my twenty-fourth birthday, and my big sister Gemma gave me the dumbest, but totally plot-inciting gift: a sunrise alarm clock.
The Incident starts like this, in Mum’s pokey poppies-and-roosters kitchen, with Gemma leaning on the back of my chair:
"I have a perfectly good alarm clock." I hold up my phone, then let it slap back down onto the plastic tablecloth. "Goes ding when there's stuff."
My sister heaves the kind of sigh only eldest-born siblings make, indulgent and frustrated at the same time. I love making her make that noise. It's hilarious.
"It wakes you up gently," Gem says. "So you’re not cranky."
"I’m not cranky in the mornings."
Everyone laughs. I may have snapped at Stuart this morning when he shook my foot through my childhood bed sheets like an aggressive chihuahua. Okay. So I'm cranky in the mornings.
"I don't see how it's supposed to work." Stu grabs the clock. "How can you see the light if your eyes are closed?"
As the younger brother of twin siblings, I am used to having the toys I’m playing with pulled out of my hands. Instead of trying to snatch it back, I fiddle with the iridescent green bow that was on my present, then stick it to my ear. Mum smirks at my accessory, but otherwise her prim little 'all my babies are home to roost' face stays in place.
I'm the only one of us who went away to school, and stayed away. Gem came back to live with Mum straight after she finished her undergrad, so Mum wouldn't be alone in the house. Stuart never left the city, though he's got his own place now. But that's why I stayed away after I graduated last year. Mum and Gem don't need me, and if I came back, Stu would try to get me to join his crew.
I go weak in the knees for the kind of person jacked enough to pick me up and consensually throw me around. Standing on a roof next to a whole crew of pretty roughs trying to help them replace shingles? That's gonna lead to me swooning and dying of a broken neck. Stu doesn’t want that on his conscience.
Because she's a bossy know-it-all, Gem takes my present from Stu and opens it to show me how it works. She huffs. "You can see sunlight through your eyelids. It just works, okay?"
Stu helps himself to another piece of my birthday cake, licking the icing off his fingers and the serving knife. Mum slaps the hand holding the knife, and Stu flushes up and sets it down. He descends on his third piece like a wolf, but at least now he's watching his manners.
"There's an instruction manual," I point out as Gem tosses the booklet on the table.
"The day you read the instructions," Mum says, "is the day I'll know for sure the fairies really swapped you."
It's an old joke, being the Changeling child. I'm the only one of them with dark hair. The rest of my family are blond as heck.
Mum’s grinning into that little curl in the side of her mouth that holds secrets. Dad always called it Mum's 'Peter Pan Kiss’. He'd wrap his arms around her waist and kiss that corner, and Mum would swat at him for ruining her lipstick.
Thinking about Dad reminds me he's dead.
I hate the swoop-and-stab sensation in my chest that comes with remembering. Especially when there's a moment you want to share, and you turn your head to his chair and start composing the sentence in your head: "Hey, Mum's doing that—" and then you stop.
You stop composing. Stop turning. Stop thinking about sharing. Stop breathing.
Because that chair is empty.
Dad's dead.
And you'll never get the chance to point out the Peter Pan kiss again. Or watch Mum swat him. Or listen to him tease us for falling for Mum's Old World fairy stories. Or hear his stupid har-har-har donkey laugh, thick with his French accent.
It's my birthday.
He's not here.
I'll have another birthday, next year, and he won't be there for that one either.
I try to control my breathing, but Mum hears it hitching. I'm already staring at Dad's terrible empty chair, so it's not like I can hide what I'm thinking about. Mum curls her fingers over my knuckles.
"I wish he was here too, mo leanbh," she says softly.
Stu and Gem go quiet.
"Sucks," I cough out, deciding to give no one the pleasure of watching me actually cry. I'll save it for later, when I'm back in my own apartment. Not because of any kind of 'real men don't' toxic masculinity bullshit, but because I hate the fuss. They take the shit my therapist tells them about being my support network too much to heart.
"More tea, Mummers?" I ask instead.
"Time for something stronger, don't you think?"

Oliver has a long, highly informative chat with author, actor, and voice actor J.M. Frey about her experiences as a writer, including what happens when your book grows to around the 200K word mark, self-publishing, the challenges of author exhaustion (incl. frank discussion of how the economics of publishing deals have evolved), when she received her first piece of fan art based on her work, and more! Note
7, 12, 20?
7) If someone wrote a book about your life, what would it be called?
Probably something like In the Background. The memoir I’m not writing is Life and Other Alternate Realities.
12) What was the last book that exceeded your expectations?
Dreadful Company by Vivian Shaw, I think, because I was fully expecting it to have sequelitis.
20) If you had to analyse any book for school/university/work, what book would you choose?
Book: Crazy Rich Asians because I kind of want to dig into how it interacts with the comedy of manners tradition.
Series: The Expanse by James S.A. Corey because there’s a lot of political complexity to tease apart, or The Accidental Turn series by J.M. Frey because it’s incredibly meta and I think it would be fun to try to work out how much.
Subgenre: Fannish YA, in all its guts and glory, (especially the evolution of).
Thanks for asking!
Ask me things!

Book Review: The Untold Tale
While I was flying all over the country (seriously, I’ve hit each cardinal point in the past week), I read through a lot of books and figured I’d give you guys a breakdown on some of them.
I picked up The Untold Tale by J.M. Frey while i was in Toronto. Well, actually, Bakka Pheonix only had the second two in the trilogy there, but I wouldn’t have heard about it if it wasn’t for the lovely people there! Seriously, go check out their store, it is all Science Fiction and Fantasy, we only got to do one floor because it was all so good, we spent close to $200 CAD while there.
I digress.
The Untold Tale is told from a first person perspective, which can be hard to pull off, given some of the subject matter is starts to discuss. However, Ms. Frey navigates it wonderfully. It talks about abuse, rape, homosexuality, and societal pressures all in a way that give both the character you are hearing it from a lot to digest and the other main character a lot of respect.
Forsyth Turn is our hero, however he is a secondary character in real life. Seriously, you are reading a book inside of a book, where Lucy Piper or Pip gets sucked into it due to her knowledge of the world and using her knowledge of it for her PhD. As Forsyth starts to put together the pieces and Pip starts to find her way home, they realize they may not want to be separated from one another.
Along the way there is also family reconciliation, a main character that realizes he doesn’t have to be a homophobic, misogynistic asshat in order to do his job well, and a love lost sidekick who finds his way. The amount of agency these characters don’t have in the beginning of the book and you realize the goal is to not give them by the end, the harder you root for them.
There is a lot of romance here. Pip is kind of in a refrigerator in that Forsyth only really steps up because of her. However, they do start to work together and Forsyth learns to be a hero in his own right and in his own way, shedding the secondary character mantle while him and Pip become the heroes of their own story.
If you love romantic adventures but don’t want nearly the graphic detail of some books that are out there when it comes to sex scenes, this would be a great pick up for you. If you like the satirical nature of a book like Red Shirts, then I would also advocate this would be up your alley. If you like seeing literary theory talked about in terms of feminism and breaking the mold, I’m going to hold off until I get through the other two, but this is looking to be a good start as well.
