Okay, hello everyone, I have no idea how the hell Tumblr works, but there's a solid Temeraire community here, so I have to join in since I'm on my third reread and the series about dragons involved in the Napoleonic Wars is eating my brain again.
So yeah, there's your Temeraire fanart. And be gentle, I have no idea what to do here, hah

Blackbeard's a master tactician! He's a terrible flirt! He's got the eyes, the beard, the fit, and the sexy lil voice! Tummy and arm! He's gay and has daddy issues! What more could you want from a man???
I love him
William Laurence is a captain in the British Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars until he accidentally bonds with a dragon hatchling found on a captured French vessel, whereupon he is dragged into joining the Royal Aerial Corps instead.
Temeraire (the dragon) is a staunch dragon rights advocate and Laurence is his biggest supporter.

Okay I've been thinking temeraire thoughts recently and like. I CANNOT articulate why I love Laurence so much like if I just describe him he doesn't come off as special. Like yeah a white British man with blond hair and blue eyes who has Honor and Duty dialed up to eleven and who eventually gets radicalized by his friend? Nothing truly stands out. You learn his friend is actually a dragon and he lives in an alternate history during the Napoleonic Wars? Okay slightly more interesting. You learn he has a maybe boyfriend and everyone he knows seems to be in love with him? Yeah pretty normal.
Like Laurence my love you're in the stuffy history textbooks. They write the exciting children's books about Temeraire.
Nonetheless I love him and that's that.

Lien
I painted a dragon figurine to look like Lung Tien Lien from Naomi Noviks Temeraire series!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to give her wings a pink edge to match her red eyes.
She is wearing her golden necklace with rubies, her golden talon sheaths and a stylish Tiara. Coming up with what her jewellery could be on the figurine was the most fun out of this project :D

Before I'd read the Aubreyad I would see Temeraire (which I had already read) being pitched as Aubreyad-with-dragons and I'd think, OK, sounds reasonable; and I guess it's true in the broad sense of "Age of Sail and the driving relationship of the series is an odd-couple friendship," and in the sense that that's apparently literally where it started. But those serial numbers have been very thoroughly filed off. I don't think there are two men in the Royal Navy more different than Aubrey and Laurence.
Except Hornblower. I guess Aubrey and Laurence look pretty similar if they're standing (as they often are in fandom) next to Hornblower. But that man has things wrong with him that are unprecedented in the human psyche.

Arms I made up for Jane Roland (and later Emily’s) Ducal House. Roland’s titles are never mentioned in the books, but I have her created Duchess of Carmarthen. Carmarthen was a major center in Wales prior to industrialization. It is meant something of an insult from the government because the Welsh are icky, just like women and aviators. The Rolands, naturally, do not care one bit and rather take a liking to the place. Most estates they are awarded are in England, however. They do not currently have a seat because they have dragons to fly. Might get some subsidiary titles (maybe something named for Scotland near Loch Laggan) so that Emily can be a Countess.
The dragon is not a perfect longwings, but it is blue, and holding a grenade to symbolize the guns and bombs. Four yellow stripes on green for an Admiral of the Air. Golden Laurels for Victory. A ducal coronet above. Jane is extremely mad that the College of Arms said she couldn’t swear in her motto, and refuses to use Latin or French until someone suggests “Excidium.” The dragon himself is quite pleased with this, although wishes his portrait was better. But the poor College of Arms people are already so sad about his hastily put together arms that Jane just left it.

Go Laurence, go!! One of my favourite scenes, I couldn't resist and had to draw it. Laurence was a badass and Rankin got exactly the treatment he deserved, little bastard.
(Don't count this as part of my private quest to draw chapters in Temeraire, because this is chapter twelve and I'd like to go chronologically, except this has lived in my head for far too long.)
Also, I'm putting the sketch here for once, because I like Laurence's expression there more – the colors have muted it a bit.

Musing about female aviators and Longwings…
How many women do the Aerial Corps train relative to the number of Longwings/Longwing eggs? Surely there must be more than the number of dragons, because it seems inevitable that some would die in action before becoming captains… but how many more are there? Based on the set of characters we encounter it seems like they’re relatively few and far between (not that I trust Laurence to actually notice the number that there are based on his initial impressions of Emily Roland and Harcourt, lol). If there are so few, are they near-guaranteed to become captains? Do any of the male aviators resent that? I wonder too what it must be like for the women who never end up being captains, given that they’re only in the Corps because of the Longwings… what happens if one of the women fails an attempted harnessing? Does she leave the Corps at that point, or stay in as a lieutenant?
And, for all of the female aviators, where do they go when they retire? What do they do? It’s hard to imagine them integrating back into the rest of society afterwards if the existence of female aviators is supposed to be a secret, but we never see what happens instead.
Also I wonder if Longwings can tell if people are trans? Like have they refused potential captains because of it, or made unexpected choices of bystanders? Have any of those folks realized they’re trans because of it? (If so I guess it means more than one egg cracked at the hatching, ha)! I keep thinking that I would 100% have run away to become an aviator if I were a character in that universe, because doing so would be the closest thing to living as a man — not that I imagine this Temeraire-universe self to be sufficiently self-aware to put words to that — but gosh a failed harnessing would be a devastating way to come to that understanding, especially if the only reason for being allowed in is to harness a Longwing…

Temeraire in the wild
Tumblr media
Today was the last day of sunshine for a while, according to the forecast, so I had to walk into the forest and take some pictures of Temeraire.
